President Mahama urges businesses to reflect cedi gains in prices

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has urged businesses to reflect the recent appreciation of the cedi in their pricing structures, calling for broader private sector support to ease cost pressures on consumers amid signs of macroeconomic stability.

Speaking at the 9th Ghana CEO Summit on Monday, May 26, 2025, President Mahama reiterated his government’s commitment to fiscal prudence, describing price adjustments as a necessary complement to efforts aimed at consolidating economic recovery.

“I commend all businesses that have acted in good faith by lowering prices in line with the cedi’s performance. This gesture helps ease the financial burden on citizens and demonstrates true partnership in national development,” he said.

The President also praised the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) for reducing transport fares, describing the move as both timely and socially responsive.

The cedi has appreciated against major currencies in recent weeks, driven by tighter monetary policy, improved foreign exchange inflows, and growing market confidence.

He further emphasised that the private sector remains a critical partner in ensuring that the benefits of macroeconomic stability reach a wider audience.

“On the government’s part, I assure you of continued fiscal discipline and a commitment to creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive,” he added.

Management of Simba confronting the officials after the game Management of Simba confronting the officials after the game

The CAF Confederation Cup final ended in controversy and chaos on Sunday, May 25, 2025, as Tanzanian giants Simba SC were left fuming after their 3-1 aggregate loss to Moroccan side RS Berkane.

The second leg, played in Zanzibar, was marred by officiating disputes, red cards, and post-match drama that could trigger CAF sanctions.

Simba entered the return leg needing to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit suffered in Morocco.

Early signs were promising, with Joshua Mutale firing the hosts ahead in the 17th minute to ignite hopes of a comeback.

But things took a sharp turn in the 50th minute when Yusuf Kagoma received a second yellow card, leaving Simba a man down.

The match reached boiling point when a Steve Mukwala goal, which would have tied the aggregate score at 2-2, was ruled out by VAR.

That moment sent tensions soaring among Simba’s players, officials, and supporters.

The final nail in the coffin came deep into stoppage time, when Berkane’s Sidibé Soumaila equalised on the night to seal a 3-1 aggregate win for the Moroccans.

After the final whistle, frustrations boiled over. Videos circulating online show Simba’s management visibly furious after allegedly discovering that match officials had a “guest” inside their room.

The footage sparked questions about potential interference or misconduct, prompting widespread concern about the integrity of the officiating.

Security personnel were forced to intervene as emotions ran high, both on the pitch and behind the scenes.

CAF have opened investigations into several incidents during the Confederation Cup final, including RS Berkane’s delayed reception at the Zanzibar airport, and indiscipline shown by Simba’s technical team.

Inappropriate chants directed at CAF President Patrice Motsepe, and the controversial presence of unauthorised guests in the referees’ dressing room.

Match reports from the commissioner and referee have already been submitted, and CAF is expected to announce disciplinary measures in the coming days.

“Twice Marginalised, Yet Full of Potential”: Empowering Women with Disabilities in Ghana’s Agricultural Value Chains

0

A GNA feature by Daniel Adu Darko.

Accra, May 25, GNA- In the heart of Ghana’s rural economy, agriculture beats as a lifeline, providing food, livelihoods, and purpose. Yet, as fields yield harvests and agribusinesses grow, a significant segment of the population remains left behind.

Women with disabilities (PWDs), particularly the youth, remain on the fringes of the agricultural value chains, not for lack of interest or ability, but because of systemic barriers deeply rooted in social norms, economic exclusion, and institutional neglect.

This was the stark reality highlighted in the recently launched HAPPY Programme Report in collaboration with Mastercard Foundation, which presents a sobering yet hopeful assessment of disability inclusion in Ghana’s agricultural landscape.

Double Disadvantage: The Gender and Disability Intersection

Women with disabilities in Ghana often face a unique and layered marginalisation. Not only are they discriminated against because of their gender, but their disabilities further limit their access to agricultural land, credit, training, and markets.

“Female PWDs are caught in a cycle of exclusion that begins with cultural perceptions and ends in economic dependency,” the report noted.

Traditional land ownership structures often favour men, and even when opportunities arise, disabled women are rarely considered. As a result, many young women between the ages of 18 and 35 find themselves trapped, willing but unable to contribute meaningfully to the sector that feeds the nation.

In Ghana’s Northern Zone, the challenges are even more acute. Limited infrastructure, information gaps, and weak institutional support make it difficult for young PWDs, especially women, to access the tools and opportunities they need to thrive.

Breaking Stereotypes, Unleashing Potential

The HAPPY Programme’s assessment found that societal perceptions about disability remained one of the most persistent barriers. PWDs are often viewed as incapable of contributing to agricultural productivity. For women, these perceptions are magnified by patriarchal norms that restrict their mobility, voice, and visibility.

However, these stereotypes couldn’t be further from the truth. “There is a strong willingness among young PWDs to engage in agriculture, particularly in value-added roles like processing and marketing,” said the report.

These roles not only required less physical labour but also tap into areas where PWDs can excel, organisation, coordination, and innovation.

Young women with disabilities have expressed interest in agro-processing, managing distribution channels, and starting agribusiness ventures.

But interest alone is not enough. The report warns that unless adaptive tools, training, and financing are made accessible, this untapped potential will remain just that, untapped.

Policy Gaps and Opportunities

The report presents a suite of comprehensive policy recommendations aimed at transforming the sector into an inclusive space where no one is left behind.

From land allocation quotas for PWDs and input subsidy programmes, to tailored financial products and adaptive equipment grants, the path toward inclusion is well-charted. What’s missing is political will and coordinated implementation.

Key among the immediate actions recommended is the prioritisation of accessibility and adaptive technologies across all zones. Without tactile guides, lightweight ploughs, and voice-activated tools, many women with disabilities will continue to face barriers that are entirely preventable.

Importantly, the report also calls for childcare support for female PWDs and gender quotas for access to land and training. These gender-sensitive interventions recognise the disproportionate burden placed on women and offer practical solutions to ease their entry into agricultural livelihoods.

Community, Culture, and Change

Inclusion is not merely a policy issue, it’s a cultural one. The HAPPY Programme underscores the need for community sensitisation campaigns to shift public perceptions about disability. Traditional leaders, religious heads, and media organisations must be part of a national conversation that redefines ability, uplifts female PWDs, and dismantles stigma.

Success stories of women with disabilities thriving in agribusiness must be amplified across radio, TV, and digital platforms. Visibility fosters acceptance. Acceptance births opportunity.

A Strategic Economic Priority

Including women with disabilities in Ghana’s agricultural value chain is not just the right thing to do, it’s a strategic move for national development. It aligns directly with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

“When PWDs, especially women, are given a fair chance, they don’t just survive, they thrive,” the report insists.

A Call to Action

The HAPPY Programme’s recommendations are a blueprint for change, but they require action, urgent, coordinated, and inclusive.

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture, traditional authorities, NGOs, and private agribusinesses must come together to dismantle barriers and unlock opportunity.

Women with disabilities are not liabilities. They are leaders in waiting. With the right support, they can contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s agricultural transformation and help build an equitable society for all. Because in the agricultural fields, there is room for every hand.

Ghana’s Washington Embassy Shut Down, Staff Dismissed, Others Suspended Over Alleged Corruption

0

The government through the Ministry Foreign Affairs, has shut down Ghana’s embassy in Washington, D.C. in the United States of America following revelations of corrupt practices.

The sector Minister, Sameul Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a social media post this morning announced the immediate dismissal of Mr. Fred Kwarteng, a local staff member implicated in an elaborate fraud scheme involving unauthorised charges on visa and passport applicants.

Mr. Kwarteng, recruited in August 2017 to the embassy’s IT department, allegedly created an unauthorised link on the embassy’s official website.

This link redirected applicants to his private company, Ghana Travel Consultants (GTC), where extra fees ranging from US$29.75 to US$60 were charged without the ministry or parliamentary approval.

Mr. Ablakwa said the investigations reveal that he and his collaborators operated this illegal scheme for at least five years.

The Foreign Affairs Minister confirmed that the case has been referred to the Attorney-General for possible prosecution. In addition to the dismissal, all Ministry of Foreign

Affairs staff posted at the Washington embassy have been recalled immediately, and all locally recruited staff there have been suspended. The embassy’s IT department has also been dissolved to prevent further abuse.

Christ the King youth lead blood donation campaign

0

Accra, May 26, GNA -The Young Christian Workers Movement (YCWM) of Christ the King Catholic Church has reaffirmed its commitment to saving lives by organising its annual blood donation exercise in partnership with health institutions.

Dozens of voluntary donors were there to support the country’s urgent need for blood.

The initiative forms part of YCWM’s longstanding mission to contribute to national health efforts and encourage a culture of voluntary blood donation among the youth and wider community.

The movement has been at the forefront of this life-saving campaign for over 15 years.

The exercise brought together parishioners and health professionals at the forecourt of Christ the King Catholic Church in Accra.

Medical staff from the 37 Military Hospital were on-site to assist donors and ensure the smooth running of the event, which saw enthusiastic participation from first-time and regular donors.

Speaking during the event, Flight Lieutenant Rashid Bashiru, a Medical Laboratory Scientist with the Blood Bank Department at the 37 Military Hospital, urged Ghanaians to embrace voluntary blood donation as a lifesaving civic duty.

“A single unit of donated blood can save up to three lives. Blood is essential to human survival, and donating even twice a year could save up to six lives annually,” he said in an interview with the media.

He emphasised the need for individuals to take personal responsibility in supporting the national blood supply encouraging citizens not to wait for special campaigns but to visit nearby hospitals and donate regularly.

The President of the Young Christian Workers Movement, Ms. Lucy Dzata, highlighted the group’s longstanding support for blood donation efforts adding that “for more than 15 years, we have been organising these drives to help maintain adequate blood supplies in our hospitals. It is our way of giving back and ensuring that no life is lost due to the lack of blood.”

Some of the donors at the event shared personal motivations for participating, expressing their desire to contribute to saving lives and encouraging others to follow suit.

The YCWM continues to play a vital role in promoting health and community service in Ghana, and their partnership with the 37 Military Hospital underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in strengthening the country’s healthcare system.

I lost a job opportunity because of a referee – MzGee recounts

Ghanaian media personality MzGee has shared a touching story of how she faced a bitter disappointment early in her career, one that taught her a lesson about setbacks, resilience, and the unpredictable twists of professional life.

Speaking during her popular Gee O’clock show, MzGee recalled how, while job hunting, she had the opportunity to apply to a media house.

She said after moving confidently through multiple interview rounds, MzGee thought the job was hers.

However, at the last moment, she was met with an unexpected blow.

“I thought that, oh, this is a done deal. You know what happened? They took my CV and one of the people on the panel realised that his name was on the CV and he said, ‘because of that, you’re disqualified.’ I learnt from them that anytime I’m going to a certain media house or I’m going to a certain office to look for a job, if somebody who could be a referee is in there, I do not have to add their names.

“It was a very bitter lesson because I had gone through all the processes, and that was the only disqualification,” she shared.

She added that what made it sting even more was the genuine respect she had for that referee.

Mzgee said she never imagined the connection would count against her.

“I used the person because I respected them. I thought they knew me well enough to recommend me. I didn’t know it could work against me,” she said.

For someone who openly admits she hates failing and beating herself up over setbacks, Mzgee said this experience was tough to swallow.

But instead of giving up, MzGee said she embraced the pain as a stepping stone.

“I hate failure. When I fail, it hits me hard. But I’ve come to understand that sometimes, in life, you don’t always win. Sometimes you learn,” she said.

MzGee’s career journey hasn’t been without other trials, from losing in reality shows to navigating betrayals and disappointments. Yet through each challenge, she stated that she always found opportunities to grow.

“There have been times friends betrayed me, times I cried alone at night feeling defeated. But I always dusted myself off and tried again,” she added.

Her submission ended with an advice to young professionals and creatives, stating, “Failure is not the end. It’s a chance to rethink, relearn, and come back stronger. You don’t always have to win at first, or even the second or third time. But you must never stop trying.”

President Mahama unveils automated system with GH¢1 charge

0

Road and bridge tolls are set to be reintroduced Road and bridge tolls are set to be reintroduced

President John Dramani Mahama has urged compliance with the newly introduced automated system for collecting road tolls.

Speaking at the CEO Summit in Accra on May 26, 2025, President Mahama explained the seamless transition from physical toll booths at designated road points to an automated toll collection system.

In a video report shared by JoyNews’ X account on May 26, 2025, he detailed the processes involved in the new automated road toll system.

President Mahama explained that the system would be managed electronically through the Ghana Identity Card, also known as the Ghana Card.

“We said in our budget that we would reintroduce road tolls. There has been discussion about the modalities, but the good thing is that every car is linked to the owner’s Ghana Card. So, we no longer need the old toll booths.

“If you cross the East Legon bridge, we simply take a picture of your car, and the system will automatically charge the toll to your mobile money or bank account. You will just pay 1 cedi, only 1 cedi,” he stated.

Background

The reintroduction of road tolls, as previously announced by the Government of Ghana, is set to commence with the necessary processes already underway.

A report by graphic.com.gh, indicated that the reintroduced road tolls will incorporate technology-driven solutions aimed at modernising the system to improve efficiency, boost revenue generation, and ensure greater transparency.

The report further indicated that the new road toll system will be implemented at 65 toll booths nationwide, an increase from the previous 39 booths that were in operation before the suspension under the previous administration.

The Ministry of Roads and Highways, which is leading the initiative, is therefore inviting qualified Ghanaian private sector entities to submit tenders for pre-qualification in the areas of design, financing, construction, operation, and maintenance of the new tolling system.

Additionally, this process is in line with the Public Private Partnership Act, 2022 (Act 1039).

“We are beginning the procurement process, where we are inviting Ghanaian-owned companies or a consortium that is led by Ghanaians. At least they should prove that the Ghanaians have about 51 per cent in that consortium.

“We are doing what we call the pre-qualification, where we look at the technical, the financial capacity of the firms and their legal status,” the Head of Public Relations of the Ministry of Roads and Highways, Nasir Ahmad Yartey, is quoted as saying by Graphic online on May 22, 2025.

The deadline set for the submission of bids from qualified entities is June 19,2025.

According to Ahmad Yartey, the successful bidder would be responsible for mobilising capital for the tolling system’s modernisation and also undertake the design and construction through engineering, construction and installation of toll gantries/plazas and related infrastructure.

In the operation and maintenance, he said the selected bidder would manage toll collection and related road/bridges and ensure system reliability and that with revenue collection, it would implement robust systems to maximise efficiency and minimise revenue leakages.

Otto Addo speaks after announcing Black Stars squad to face Nigeria

0

Otto Addo will be leading the Black Stars in the 2025 Unity Cup tournament Otto Addo will be leading the Black Stars in the 2025 Unity Cup tournament

Head coach of the Black Stars, Otto Addo, has stated that the nation prioritises the 2025 Unity Cup, which will be hosted in London, England.

According to him, the four-nation tournament will serve as an opportunity for him to explore young and new players in the team, allowing them to showcase their potential.

He stressed that the new players will help create competition within the team, pushing the more experienced players to perform better, ultimately benefiting the nation in tournaments.

“These two matches are extremely important for the team, just like the FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September. I believe this is the perfect time to closely observe the players we’ve been monitoring over the last few months. the 48-year-old said. Team building is a process that takes time, and it’s not something that happens overnight. Therefore, this is a great opportunity to give some of our young players a chance to prove themselves.

“Our aim is to create competition within the team, which can only be achieved by providing an equal platform for all our talents to showcase their skills. We’re looking beyond individuals and focusing on building a strong team. That’s why I’ve decided to give many of these young players a chance to play and prove themselves, with the aim of making them a key part of my team going forward,” he told ghanafa.org.

Five players are set to make their senior debut for Ghana: Joseph Tetteh Anang (St. Patrick’s Athletic, Ireland), Abdul Aziz Issah (Barcelona B), Aaron Essel (North Texas SC), Caleb Yirenkyi (FC Nordsjælland, Denmark), and Mohammed Gadafi Fuseini (Union St. Gilloise, Belgium).

The Black Stars will compete in the Unity Cup with a high-profile semi-final clash against long-time West African rivals Nigeria scheduled for May 28, 2025, at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium, with a kick-off time of 19:00 GMT.

The winner of that match will progress to the final on May 31, where they will meet the victor of the other semi-final between Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, with the final set to kick off at 12:30 GMT.

Congolese refugees in Burundi face starvation and violence amid aid cuts

A Burundian official talks to Congolese refugees while inspecting rice from the last US aid shipment A Burundian official talks to Congolese refugees while inspecting rice from the last US aid shipment

Claude fears he may soon die – either from starvation or violence – as he waits at a food distribution tent in a refugee camp in Burundi.

He is among thousands of Congolese refugees trapped between a brutal conflict across the border and severe reductions in international food assistance.

A former bouncer from Uvira, a town in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Claude fled after violence erupted in the east, sparked by the rapid advance of the Rwanda-backed M23 group.

Armed groups “were shooting, killing each other, … raping women,” recalled the 25-year-old, who escaped across the border into Burundi in February.

In the overcrowded Musenyi camp, Claude now faces a different struggle as food rations dwindle.

Hunger has fuelled new tensions within the camp, prompting Claude to join volunteers who patrol the area to prevent theft of what supplies remain.

“When I arrived here, I was given 3.5kg [7.7lb] of rice per month. Now it’s a kilo [2.2lb]. The 3kg [6.6lb] of peas have dropped to 1.8kg [4lb]. What I get in tomato sauce lasts one day. Then it’s over,” said Claude, whose name has been changed for security reasons, as have the names of other refugees interviewed.

Some of the most desperate resort to slashing neighbours’ tents in search of food, he added, while gangs “spread terror”.

“The reduction of assistance will lead to many crimes,” he warned.

Oscar Niyibizi, the camp’s deputy administrator, described the cut in food rations as a “major challenge” that could “cause security disruption”.

He urges refugees to cultivate land nearby but said external support remains desperately needed.

The administration of United States President Donald Trump slashed its aid budget by 80 percent, and other Western nations have also reduced donations. As a result, many NGOs and United Nations agencies have been forced to close or significantly scale back their programmes.

These cutbacks have come at a “very bad time” as fighting escalates in the DRC, according to Geoffrey Kirenga, head of mission for Save the Children in Burundi.

Burundi, one of the world’s poorest countries, has received more than 71,000 Congolese refugees since January while still hosting thousands from previous conflicts.

Established last year to accommodate 10,000 people, the Musenyi camp’s population is now nearly twice that number.

In addition to food shortages, the reduction in aid has led NGOs to discontinue support services for survivors of sexual violence, who are numerous in the camp, Kirenga said.

His gravest concern is that “deaths from hunger” may become inevitable.

The World Food Programme has halved rations since March and warned that without renewed US funding, all assistance could end by November.

According to the UN, hundreds of Congolese refugees are compelled to risk returning across the border in search of food.

Council of State pledges support for Nzemamanle council to speed up development

0

By P.K. Yankey

Ambainu (W/R), May 26, GNA- Dr Maxwell Boakye, Western Regional Member for the Council of State, has appealed to citizens in the Western Region to unite in the quest for an accelerated socio-economic development.

He said the Region abounds in natural and mineral resources, yet it lagged in development.

Dr Boakye noted that there were sharp divisions and disunity among some traditional rulers which did not augur well for the rapid development of the Western Region.

He was speaking at the Nzemamanle Traditional Council meeting at Ambainu in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region.

The event, which was on the theme,” Unity”, brought together chiefs, queen mothers, politicians, council of state members, corporate organizations, and the media.

Dr Boakye said the Region produced a chunk of cocoa, timber and other mineral resources but was yet to receive her share of the national cake.

He pledged his readiness to lead the traditional council to the Flagstaff House to present their case to the President of the Republic for the Region to get her share of the national cake.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah assured the Council that government would partner them to administer mining activities in their communities.

The Minister said though the Western Region was endowed with abundant natural resources, their exploitation should be done responsibly and sustainably for economic growth without degrading the environment.

He said a new mining regulatory committee was being formed at the District Assembly which would empower traditional rulers as the first point of call in the new licensing regime.

Mr Kofi Buah said under the new community mining scheme, part of the concessions of large-scale mining companies would be ceded to the host communities for sustainable mining under the new cooperative mining code.

That, the Minister believed, would mitigate the penchant of the youth for illegal mining activities.

Mr Kofi Buah disclosed that some large-scale mining companies dole out part of their concessions to illegal miners to pollute the environment and that investigations were underway to arrest the culprits.

Mr Kofi Buah who doubles as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ellembelle, assured the Council that issues affecting the Nzema area and the Western Region such as road infrastructure, education and promotion and preservation of the Nzema language would be addressed by the government.

Paramount Chief of the Lower Axim Traditional Area and President of the Lower Axim Traditional Council, Awulae Attibrukusu III advised traditional rulers in the Nzema area and the Region, to unite and forget about their differences.

Awulae Attibrukusu III spoke on the need to fight the galamsey menace by burning Chanfang used for illegal mining activities popularly called galamsey.

The Paramount Chief also called for stiffer punishment and jail terms for illegal miners to deter others who might want to indulge in galamsey.

He, therefore, called on the government to revoke fake mining licenses and issue genuine ones in the quest for sustainable mining practices.

He said the Nzemamanle Traditional Council was ready to team up with the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and the government to fight against galamsey activities.

Awulae Attibrukusu III called for community -sponsored mining initiated by the people themselves in a sustainable manner to create more jobs for people in the communities.

The Lower Axim Paramount Chief chastised Municipal and District Chief Executives in the Nzema area who refused to attend Nzemamanle Council meetings with the exception of the DCE for Ellembelle, Mr Joseph Agyekum.

Paramount Chief of the Nsein Traditional Council, Awulae Agyevi Kwame said between 2017 and 2024, the Ashanti Region ranked first in terms of Ghana National Gas developmental projects in the Regions.

Awulae Agyevi Kwame called for a change in the trend for the Western Region to witness an unprecedented development this time round.

Paramount Chief of the Gwira Traditional Area, Awulae Angama Tu Agyan was worried that Okobeng Mines entered the Gwira area without prior consent of traditional rulers and had been mining there for years without pitching even one borehole in the area.

He said Okobeng Mines masterminded the arrest of three of his chiefs for trying to have access to their own land.

Awulae Angama Tu Agyan said once Okobeng Mines came to the Gwira area, nobody was allowed to step on their concessions to cut even bamboo.

He prayed to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources that Okobeng Mines were trying to come back to Gwira but the Ministry should not approve any license for them to Mine.

The Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana National Gas Company

Limited, Madam Judith Adjobah Blay whose speech was read for her by Mr Abizi Morkeh, an employee at Ghana Gas, said she would continue to engage traditional rulers to chat a common path in bringing more development to the Western Region and the catchment area of the project.

She advised the youth to pursue higher education especially in the Engineering and Technical fields to merit employment by the Company.

Madam Judith Adjobah Blay said the Company would give a fair employment slot to youth in the Nzema area and the Western Region.

She assured the people that phase two of the Ghana National Gas Company Limited would soon materialize as well as an ultra-modern trauma hospital which was 70% complete.

Madam Judith Adjobah Blay assured the Nzemamanle Traditional Council that from 2025 to 2028, the Nzema area and the Western Region would rank first in terms of developmental projects initiated by the Ghana National Gas Company.

We remain alert to external vulnerabilities – Bank of Ghana Governor

0

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has made structural reforms to improve credibility and transparency, Governor Dr Johnson Asiama has said.

He said that the BoG now publishes individual Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voting positions and releases policy decisions on the same day.

“These changes are not cosmetic. They are part of building an institution that communicates clearly and acts predictably,” he said during the 9th edition of the CEOs Summit held in Accra on Monday, May 25.

Dr Asiama further stated that recent business confidence surveys reflect the highest levels in seven years, supported by easing inflation, credit flows, and renewed optimism about Ghana’s  growth path.

“At the same time, we remain alert to external vulnerabilities – from disinflation divergence in global financial markets to the proposed 5% U.S. tax on outbound remittances. These risks remind us that vigilance is still required,” he said.

He also indicated that Ghana’s growth prospects remain strong as its real sector indicators are all pointing to a pickup in economic activity, that are mainly driven by exports, credit to the private sector, and construction activities.

Also, the Ghana Purchasing Managers’ Index rose above the 50-benchmark as output and new orders increased, signaling improved growth prospects.

Similarly, the latest confidence surveys have shown significant improvement in consumer and business indices, the highest in the last seven years, mainly based on easing inflationary pressures and optimism about macroeconomic conditions.

“Headline inflation has declined steadily over the past four months, reaching 21.2 per cent in April, down by 2.6 percentage points since the beginning of the year. Gross international reserves have improved to US$11 billion, equivalent to 4.2 months of import cover. And the cedi has appreciated by 24.1 per cent against the US dollar year to date.

“Let me emphasize: the central bank is NOT using its international reserves to support the cedi, or to engineer an appreciation in the cedi. The strengthening of the currency reflects a blend of disciplined monetary policy, tailored FX auction reforms, enhanced remittance channels, and stricter market surveillance, not mere short-term interventions.

“Last week, the Monetary Policy Committee met and voted unanimously to maintain the policy rate at 28 per cent. This decision reflects our commitment to completing the disinflation process, with inflation now projected to return to our target band of 8±2 per cent by the first quarter of 2026.

“As part of that strategy, effective June 5, we are also amending the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) requirement. Banks will now maintain CRRs in the same currency as their liabilities – foreign currency reserves for foreign currency deposits, and cedi reserves for domestic deposits. This supports better FX risk alignment and encourages more efficient liquidity planning,” he said.

Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly begins decongestion exercise in Kasoa

0

The Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly has commenced a decongestion exercise in the Central Business District (CBD) of Kasoa, aimed at removing traders who have taken over pedestrian walkways and parts of main roads.

According to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Seth Sabah Serwonoo-Banini, the initiative is intended to restore order and ensure the safety of pedestrians in the area.

Speaking to Citi News, the MCE emphasised that the exercise will be sustained and cautioned traders against returning to their previous spots.

He further disclosed that plans are underway to relocate affected traders to a designated satellite market.

“We’ve had productive discussions with the Police Commander, and the issue was also raised during our recent security meeting. Additionally, I’ve held a separate meeting with the Regional Commander.

“We are in the process of forming a task force comprising personnel from the Immigration Service, Prisons Service, Fire Service, and the Police,” he said.

The MCE added that the new task force will work in conjunction with the Assembly’s own team to provide 24-hour patrols in the area.

“We have laws in this country to deal with defaulters, but I believe in dialogue. So, we will continue to engage the traders and intensify public education. However, those who choose to defy the rules and act as obstacles will face the full force of the law,” he warned.

Obstetric Fistula patients undergo free surgery at KATH

0

By Naa Shormei Odonkor

Kumasi, May 26, GNA – The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital KATH) has opened its doors to women suffering from obstetric fistula to undergo free surgery to repair damages to their bladder or rectum caused by obstructed labour.

The free surgical procedure and recovery was funded by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in partnership with other organisations under the Partnership to Eliminate Fistula in Ghana (PEFIG).

Dr Akwesi Baafuor Opoku, a Fistula Surgeon at the KATH, explained that Obstetric Fistula is an abnormal hole created in the birth canal which causes leakages of urine or stools through the vagina.

He was addressing the media at KATH when representatives from PEFIG visited the facility to commemorate the World Obstetric Fistula Day.

Dr Opoku noted that women with this condition often lost control over their bladder and bowels, resulting in a strong, unpleasant odour due to the involuntary release of urine or stool.

According to him, research showed that about 200,000 women in Ghana were living with the condition, however, most of them remained in hiding due to fear of public ridicule and stigmatisation.

Dr Opoku said when the condition was left unrepaired for a long time, women could develop other health conditions such as urine dermatitis, nerve damages to the lower limp, anxiety, and depression, among others.

He noted that 90 per cent of women with Obstetric Fistula lose their children during childbirth and this was one of the significant issues associated with the condition.

Currently, Dr Opoku said, 12 women with the condition had been prepared to undergo surgery at the KATH to restore their hope to live a normal life as before.

Ms Dela Bright Gle, Programme Specialist, Reproductive Health of the UNFPA, said each Obstetric Fistula case costed USD700 to repair.

The repair, she noted, included nutrition, transportation of the clients, cost of surgery and a little money for the clients to go home with after the surgery.

As part of the activities to commemorate the World Obstetric Fistula Day, Ms Gle said 50 women with the condition had been targeted by PEFIG to undergo surgery at four hospitals in four regions in Ghana by the end of the week.

The hospitals include KATH in the Ashanti Region, Ho Teaching Hospital in the Volta Region, Tamale West Hospital in the Northern Region and the Mercy Women’s Catholic Hospital in the Central Region.

Ms Vida Opoku, a 32-year-old trader who lived with the condition for eight months expressed immense joy for being part of the women to undergo free surgery at KATH.

She noted that the condition caused her to fear societal ridicule and stigmatisation, leading her to isolate herself from public places.

“For the past eight months, I have not been going out to work because of my condition. I feared that the pampers I wore might leak while I was in town,” she said.

Ms Opoku thanked PEFIG and the KATH for the intervention and urged other women with the condition to come out from hiding to stand the chance of getting treatment.

This is expected to boost investor confidence, deepen fiscal discipline, and drive long-term growth as the government steers the country onto a path of development.

President Mahama presented this at the 9th Ghana CEO Summit under the theme “Leading Ghana’s Economic Reset: Transforming Business and Governance for a Sustainable Futuristic Economy.”

Addressing guests at the programme, President Mahama expressed confidence that a successful rollout of the strategy would transform Ghana tremendously, as the country witnesses positive signs that have brought a significant boost to the cedi.

Speaking at the May 26 summit, the president outlined his grand plan as follows:

  1. Completing the IMF Programme with Discipline
Mahama emphasized the importance of maintaining strict fiscal discipline in government spending and borrowing while working towards targets set under the extended credit fund.
He expects Ghana to complete the fourth review of the IMF programme in June 2025, with an exit strategy by 2026, followed by policy support engagement to reinforce responsible financial practices.
  2. Reopening Domestic and International Capital Markets
Plans are in motion to reopen Ghana’s bond markets through collaboration with the IMF, the Ghana Stock Exchange, and local banks. Future borrowing, Mahama stressed, will be linked to self-financing projects by government agencies to ensure sustainable repayment.
  3. Strengthening Sovereign Funds and Local Government Financing
The government will amend financial regulations to enforce mandatory contributions to sinking and stabilization funds, ensuring financial security. Additionally, Mahama envisions empowering municipalities to issue infrastructure bonds for local development, including roads, schools, and water systems.
  4. Clearing Verified Arrears and Rationalising Public Investments
A comprehensive audit of government arrears is underway, with plans to clear legitimate debts transparently. New projects will be prioritised based on need, funding availability, and alignment with national interests.
  5. Accelerating Public Financial Management Reforms
To enhance financial efficiency, the administration will reactivate reforms like the Treasury Single Account (TSA), integrated tax administration, and real-time budgeting tools to curb waste and corruption.
  6. Revitalising Exports Through Ghana Exim Bank
The Ghana Exim Bank will be repositioned to boost non-traditional exports, agro-processing, light manufacturing, and SMEs, enhancing foreign exchange reserves while creating jobs in the real economy.
  7. Building Ghana into a Regional Hub for Trade and Investment
Ghana aims to become West Africa’s premier commercial, transport, and digital services hub. Key sectors such as port expansion, financial services, healthcare, education, and industrial corridors will be strengthened to connect local businesses with the African Continental Free Trade Area.
  8. Resuming Infrastructure Development to Stimulate Growth

‘I recorded most of the songs after midnight’ – Gyakie speaks about new album

Ghanaian singer and songwriter, Gyakie, has narrated the inspiration behind the title of her album ‘After Midnight’.

Speaking in an interview on ‘Daybreak Hitz’ with Doreen Avio on May 23, 2025, Gyakie revealed that the name of the album was influenced by the timing and atmosphere of the recording sessions.

The ‘Rent Free’ hitmaker explained that most of the songs were recorded after midnight, a time she finds most creative and peaceful.

“This project, every time I talk about it, I feel like a mother about to give birth to her first child,” she said. “I’ve always believed that an album represents an artist, especially your first or debut album.”

She continued, “The name After Midnight came from how and when the songs were recorded. Most of the studio sessions took place after midnight. I like to record at dawn because that’s when most people are asleep, and everything is quiet.

“That’s when I’m able to create properly. It has always been my favorite time of day, so the name of the project just made sense.”

Court acquits, discharges failed Juaben MCE

Alexander Kwabena Sarfo-Kantanka was caught on camera demanding back his money from assembly members Alexander Kwabena Sarfo-Kantanka was caught on camera demanding back his money from assembly members

Alexander Kwabena Sarfo-Kantanka, the nominee of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the position of Juaben Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), who was captured in a viral video demanding the return of monies allegedly paid to assembly members after his rejection, has been acquitted and discharged by the Kumasi High Court.

Providing an update on the trial, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), in a Facebook post on Monday, May 26, 2025, indicated that the acquittal followed the ruling of the presiding judge, Justice Priscilla Dikro Ofori.

According to the verdict, the video submitted as key evidence showing the accused angrily demanding the return of his money did not conclusively prove that the funds were intended to induce or influence the voting decisions of the assembly members.

“The High Court in Kumasi has acquitted and discharged Alexander Kwabena Sarfo-Kantanka, President Akufo-Addo’s nominee for Juaben Municipal Chief Executive in the Ashanti Region. He had been facing 26 counts of corruption in relation to a public election since May 2022.

“Mr Sarfo-Kantanka appeared in a viral video allegedly demanding the return of monies he reportedly paid to assembly members to secure confirmation of his nomination. However, in her judgement, Justice Priscilla Dikro Ofori held that the video did not establish that the monies were intended to influence the votes of the assembly members,” the OSP shared.

Kwabena Sarfo-Kantanka had been standing trial since May 2022, facing 26 counts of corruption following the emergence of the viral video, after the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) filed criminal charges against him.

According to the OSP, the charges were in respect of corruption arising out of two public elections conducted in September and November 2021 for the confirmation or otherwise of his nomination by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the position of Municipal Chief Executive for Juaben in the Ashanti Region.

GH¢50 million COCOBOD payment linked to raid at Wontumi’s home

0

Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) is Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) is Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is expected to report at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, May 26, 2025.

This follows a raid by officials of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) at Chairman Wontumi’s residence in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region on Friday, May 23, 2025.

It is not clear why the security officials raided Wontumi’s home on Friday, but the government recently suspended the mining licence of his company, Akonta Mining, accusing it of engaging in illegal mining activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve in the Western Region.

Chairman Wontumi has refuted the accusation, stating that he is being targeted because of his bid to run for the National Chairmanship position of the NPP.

However, a news report by the Accra-based ChannelOne TV has claimed that the security raid was over a GH¢50 million payment by the Ghana Cocoa Board (Cocobod) in the last days of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government.

The report indicated that the payment was made to Hallmark Civil Engineering, a company owned by Wontumi, after the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, had barred contract payments during the transition period.

“We are being told that this payment was done in the dying days of the NPP during the transition to the NDC, and at that time, the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, had issued a warning to state agencies to stop all payments,” ChannelOne TV’s Charles Owusu Kumi said.

The six forgotten Black Stars players recalled for Unity Cup tournament

0

Afena-Gyan is among the six players who return to the team Afena-Gyan is among the six players who return to the team

While Ghana’s Unity Cup squad features several debutants and home-based talents, head coach Otto Addo has also welcomed back a handful of familiar names, players who have been absent from the national setup due to form, injury, or competition for places.

These returnees bring experience, hunger, and a point to prove as Ghana prepares to face Nigeria in London on May 28, 2025.

Salis Abdul Samed – Sunderland (England)

After a frustrating injury layoff, Salis Abdul Samed makes his return to the Black Stars for the first time since June 10, 2024.

The defensive midfielder secured a loan move from RC Lens to Sunderland, where he featured in 10 Championship matches, regaining fitness and form.

Still only 25, Salis’ ball-winning ability and composure in midfield will be key assets for Otto Addo in London.

Felix Afena-Gyan – Juventus Next Gen (Italy)

Once the face of Ghana’s youth revolution under Otto Addo, Felix Afena-Gyan returns to the national team for the first time in nearly three years.

Now 22, the pacey forward plays for Juventus Next Gen in Serie C, where he’s scored 6 goals in 28 matches this season.

Afena-Gyan made his debut at just 19 years old in the high-stakes World Cup playoff against Nigeria in March 2022, and has since registered 1 goal and 1 assist in 7 caps.

His last appearance came in September 2022 against Nicaragua.

Majeed Ashimeru – Anderlecht (Belgium)

Majeed Ashimeru has battled injury setbacks in recent seasons but returns to the fold after a modest campaign with Anderlecht, where he played 19 times this season, scoring once and assisting once.

The midfielder, who made his national team debut back in May 2017, has 9 caps, with his last coming in September 2024 during Ghana’s 1-1 draw with Niger in the AFCON qualifiers.

If fully fit, Ashimeru’s box-to-box energy could prove useful in midfield.

Stephan Ambrosius – St. Gallen (Switzerland)

The versatile defender returns to the national side after last featuring in October 2023, when Ghana lost 2-0 to Mexico.

Stephan Ambrosius, 25, made his debut in a friendly against Liberia in September 2023, and has 2 caps. He’s played 22 matches for St. Gallen in the Swiss Super League this season and offers depth across the backline.

Brandon Thomas-Asante – Coventry City (England)

Despite being named in past squads, Brandon Thomas-Asante hasn’t featured for the Black Stars since September 2024, when he played in the 1-1 draw against Niger.

The forward made his debut just months earlier, in June 2024, playing one minute in a win over the Central African Republic.

With 38 appearances, 4 goals, and 3 assists for Coventry City this season, the 25-year-old has been a regular at club level, helping his side to the Championship play-off semifinals, where they fell to Sunderland.

Kwame Opoku – Asante Kotoko (Ghana)

Kwame Opoku returns to the national team after nearly four years away.

Since his second spell with Asante Kotoko, he’s been in top form, scoring 9 goals in 16 Ghana Premier League matches and helping the club reach the FA Cup final, with 1 goal in 2 cup appearances.

His goal-scoring run has been instrumental in Kotoko’s late-season surge.

The striker made his Black Stars debut in March 2021 against South Africa and played 3 times for Ghana.

His last appearance came in a 1-0 defeat to South Africa in September 2021. Now 25, Opoku is chasing a long-awaited comeback and a chance to cement a place in Otto Addo’s plans.

Ugandan army accuses German envoy of ‘subversive activities’

0

Army chief Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba is known for his controversial posts on social media platform X Army chief Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba is known for his controversial posts on social media platform X

Uganda’s army has announced the suspension of all military cooperation with Germany after accusing its ambassador, Mathias Schauer, of being involved in “subversive activities” and of being “wholly unqualified” to be in the East African state.

The army did not back-up its claim but its decision signals a sharp deterioration in relations between the two nations.

Rejecting the accusations, a German foreign ministry spokesperson called them “absurd and without any merit”, the Reuters news agency reports.

The highly unusual attack on Schauer came after he reportedly raised concerns about army chief Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is the president’s son, at a meeting last week.

On X recently, the general threatened to behead opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine.

Gen Kainerugaba also boasted about torturing Wine’s bodyguard after detaining him.

Rights groups have long accused the Ugandan government of targeting the opposition, especially in the run-up to elections.

Wine is expected to run against President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power for nearly four decades, in an election due next year.

Museveni’s critics allege that the government is run by a family dynasty – his wife, Janet Museveni is the minister of education, and his brother, Gen Salim Saleh, is the chief coordinator of a government programme known as Operation Wealth Creation.

Gen Saleh held a private meeting with European Union (EU) diplomats last week, where Schauer – Germany’s ambassador to Uganda since 2020 – raised concerns about the army chief’s controversial tweets, and the “reputational damage” it was causing to Uganda, local media reported.

Gen Kainerugaba hit back with a post on Sunday, saying he was “having issues” with the German ambassador “that has to do with him as a person”.

“He is wholly unqualified to be in Uganda. It has nothing to do with the great German people. Whom I admire a lot,” he posted.

In a separate statement, army spokesman Col Chris Magezi said Uganda was suspending with immediate effect all defence and military cooperation with Germany because of “credible intelligence reports” that Schauer was involved in “subversive activities”.

“The suspension will remain in force until the full resolution of the matter of the Ambassador’s involvement with pseudo political-military forces operating in the country against the Ugandan government,” the statement added, without giving evidence to substantiate its claims.

On its website, Germany’s embassy in Uganda said that bilateral trade between the two nations was worth around $335m (£247m) in 2024, and their relationship was based on “stability and trust”.

It did not give details of military cooperation between the two nations.

Uganda is heavily involved in peacekeeping operations, including in Somalia where it is helping to fight armed Islamist groups trying to overthrow the government.

Mahama unveils eight-pillar economic reset plan

BoG Maintains Policy Rate At 28%

0

Dr. Johnson Asiamah

The Bank of Ghana (BOG) has maintained its Policy rate at 28% as a result of the high level of inflation relative to its medium term target.

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiamah who announced this at a press briefing at its 124th Monetary Committee Meeting  in Accra said headline inflation has declined consecutively in the first four months of the year by 2.6 percentage points to 21.2 percent in April 2025,  due to  both food and non-food inflation.

That, he explained, is attributed to a number of factors including tight monetary policy stance, stepped-up liquidity sterilisation efforts, downward revisions in ex-pump petroleum prices, and exchange rate stability.

Dr. Asiama also mentioned that Bank’s core inflation measure, which excludes energy and utility prices, as well as inflation expectations of consumers, businesses, and the banking sector point to easing inflationary pressures.

But according to the governor, “despite these positive developments, the Committee observed that the current level of inflation remains high relative to the medium-term target and will require maintaining the tight stance to reinforce the disinflation process. Under the circumstances, the Committee, by a unanimous decision, maintained the policy rate at 28.0 percent”.

“The latest forecast points to continued easing of inflationary pressures on the back of tight monetary policy stance, exchange rate stability, and fiscal consolidation. Inflation is expected to ease faster towards the medium-term target in the first quarter of 2026 as opposed to the second quarter as earlier envisaged, barring unanticipated shocks,” he stated.

Dr. Asiama also stated that the strong performance  of the cedi against the major trading currencies are driven by a combination of factors, such as tight monetary policy stance, ongoing fiscal consolidation, record reserve accumulation, strict enforcement of foreign exchange market rules, and improved market sentiment.

He further indicated that in May 21, 2025, the cedi had appreciated against all the major currencies, thus 24.1 percent against the US dollar, 16.2 percent against the British pound, and 14.1 percent against the euro.

‘To meet President no be beans’

Popular Big Brother Naija star and billionaire heir, Kidwaya, has come to the defence of nightlife entrepreneur Cubana Chief Priest, following widespread backlash over his recent meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Over the weekend, Cubana Chief Priest, whose real name is Pascal Okechukwu, visited the Presidential Villa in Abuja alongside Afrobeats superstar Davido, music executive Ubi Franklin, and members of the 30BG crew.

Cedi appreciation not engineered – BoG Governor

0

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiamah, has refuted claims that the Central Bank is deliberately manipulating the exchange rate to drive the recent appreciation of the Cedi.

The local currency has recorded significant gains in recent weeks, sparking speculation that the Central Bank may be employing artificial measures to influence its value.

Speaking at the Ghana CEO Summit held in Accra on Monday, May 26, 2025, Dr. Asiamah attributed the Cedi’s performance to sound macroeconomic fundamentals.

“Our Cedi has appreciated by 24.1% against the US dollar. Let me emphasise that the Central Bank is not using international reserves to prop up the Cedi, nor are we engineering an unsustainable appreciation,” he said.

According to Dr. Asiamah, the Cedi’s strength is underpinned by disciplined monetary policy, targeted foreign exchange reforms, improved remittance flows, and enhanced market surveillance.

“These are not short-term interventions—they are deliberate, structural changes aimed at ensuring long-term stability,” he added.

OFFICERS OF the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) organised a blood donation exercise to support the National Blood Service, in an effort to maintain adequate blood supplies for hospitals and emergency services across the country.

The donation witnessed over 200 officers partaking.

Assistant Superintendent of Immigration, Second in Command, Medical Unit, Isaac Konadu emphasised the significance of blood donation, particularly for individuals in uniform whose work often puts them in situations where they may encounter people in critical need of blood.

He stated that the GIS undertook this initiative to help people in critical situations, such as accident victims or those undergoing surgery, stating that, blood donation is a simple yet impactful way to make a difference in people’s lives.

He further highlighted several benefits of the donation, including reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, helping to regenerate new blood cells, as the bone marrow can replace donated blood and even benefiting individuals with high hemoglobin levels.

“I support the idea of organising blood donation exercises at least once a year to contribute to national health initiatives and help save lives. By doing so, personnel in uniform can play a crucial role in supporting the healthcare system and making a positive impact in their communities,” he added.

National Blood Service Ghana Donor Recruitment Officer, Rune Yao Agbley emphasised the importance of blood donation, highlighting that blood is not manufactured in laboratories, but rather obtained through donations. Agbley urged everyone to donate blood, stressing that it is a critical need, particularly for patients with sickle cell anemia, those undergoing dialysis, and others who rely on blood transfusions. “I encourage everyone to donate blood, as an act of charity and civic responsibility. By donating blood, individuals can make a significant difference in their communities and help save lives,” he added.

Osomanyawa of Akwamu urges government to fix roads, fulfill development promises

Nana Akonnor Bekai Ababio V Nana Akonnor Bekai Ababio V

Traditional leaders of the Akwamu State have called on the government to urgently address poor road infrastructure and accelerate development projects in Akwamuman and the broader Asuogyaman District of the Eastern region.

Speaking during the 4th Akwasidae celebration held at Bogyawe Palace in Akwamufie, under the leadership of Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III, the Omanhene of Akwamu, Nana Akonnor Bekai Ababio V, Osomanyawa, (Chief Administrator) of Akwamu, expressed concern about infrastructure projects.

“Our roads are in very bad shape. The previous government started some road construction and we are pleading with the current government, our MP, our DCE, and the roads minister to ensure these projects are completed.”

Nana Bekai, who also serves as Ayokohene, Mankrado of Akwamuman, and Guantoahene of Akwamu, emphasised that despite the Akwamu people’s historical contributions to Ghana, including providing the land for the Akosombo Dam, the area has not received adequate infrastructure development in return.

“If you look at how Akwamu people have helped the government of Ghana, even to the extent that when Kwame Nkrumah was not around, it was the Akwamuhene who took charge of the state, then we deserve better roads and development,” he added.

He also raised concerns about lands originally given by Akwamu for the construction and protection of the Akosombo Dam, many of which remain under government control decades after the project’s completion.

“Akwamu gave the land to the government for the Akosombo Dam. For protection, additional lands were taken, but the project has been completed for years. Those unused lands must be returned to the allodial owners, the chiefs,” Nana Bekai said.

“The government didn’t pay any compensation when they took the land. That must be addressed.”

On recent reports suggesting that Akwamu chiefs were opposed to the government’s land reclamation efforts led by Clemence Gyato, the government-appointed consultant in charge of safeguarding encroached state lands, the chief clarified that the traditional council fully supports the initiative.

“We saw media reports saying we oppose the work of Clemence Gyato. That is very false. We support the work the government has tasked him with,” Nana Bekai stated.

Clemence Gyato, the consultant in charge of reclaiming encroached state lands, confirmed collaboration with the Akwamu leadership. He noted that the Lands Ministry had dispatched his team following reports of unauthorized buildings near the Volta River.

“The chief has seen what is going on and has promised to support us in addressing these illegal structures,” Gyato said.

“We will do an inventory and ensure land allocations are handled properly. Anyone building illegally on government land will face demolition, regardless of how long the structure has been there.”

Gyato also announced plans to establish a monitoring camp in the area to enforce land regulations and stop further encroachment.

The programme was attended by several dignitaries, including Thomas Ampem Nyarko, Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman and Deputy Minister of Finance, and Abigail Elorm Akwambea, CEO of MASLOC.

Ghana to transition from linear economy to circular

Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Seidu Issifu Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Seidu Issifu

Ghana is taking steps to shift from a linear economic model to a regenerative, resource-efficient circular economy, according to the Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Seidu Issifu.

Speaking at a recent summit in Accra, he highlighted a comprehensive national strategy for the circular transition, emphasising innovation, youth leadership, and partnerships as key pillars.

“Ghana is charting a clear course to transition from a linear economic model, where products are produced, used, and discarded, to a circular economy that is regenerative, resource-efficient, and inclusive.

“This transition is central to our climate strategy, poverty reduction, and green industrialisation ambitions. It aligns closely with our Nationally Determined Contributions, the Sustainable Development Goals, and importantly, the manifesto priorities of the National Democratic Congress, which place strong emphasis on recycling, environmental protection, sustainable infrastructure, and circular value chains, including their development,” he remarked.

Seidu Issifu further outlined the government’s targeted efforts in three major sectors: textiles, plastics, and electronic and construction waste.

“We are supporting circular fashion initiatives that scale reuse, repair, and resale models. We are also working in partnership with Landfill to Landmark to develop comprehensive policy regulations on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). These regulations will shift responsibility upstream,” he added.

He also called on investors, civil society, and other key stakeholders to help create a sustainable and inclusive circular future.

“Together, we can turn Ghana’s waste into wealth, our environmental challenges into climate-smart solutions, and our youth into champions of regeneration. Let’s build this future boldly, collaboratively, and inclusively,” he concluded.

‘Wendy Shay recommended that I hire OgeeTheMC as her road manager’

Artiste manager and CEO of Rufftown Records, Bullet Artiste manager and CEO of Rufftown Records, Bullet

Artiste manager and CEO of Rufftown Records, Bullet, has revealed how popular hypeman and media personality OgeeTheMC became the road manager of Wendy Shay.

In an interview on 3Music TV, shared on X on May 26, 2025, Bullet explained that he started working with OgeeTheMC after his new signee, Wendy Shay, recommended him as her road manager.

He noted that prior to their meeting, he had no business relationship with OgeeTheMC, despite the hypeman’s connection to the late Ebony Reigns.

“The only time I met Ogee was when Wendy Shay came around. Wendy Shay was the one who recommended that I employ Ogee as her road manager,” he said.

He further disclosed that he had no dealings with Ogee when Ebony was signed to Rufftown Records.

Bullet explained that the only encounter he had with Ogee was a cordial meeting where Ebony introduced the hypeman to him.

“When Ebony was around, Ogee was never working with me. I was okay with Ogee because he was my boy, but when I was working with Ebony, Ogee was not involved.

“Ebony just made that connection, and that was it. Until she became famous, Ogee only came around to take pictures and videos, and that was all,” he added.

The role models guiding CJ Torkornoo through crisis according to her lawyer

0

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has filed a suit challenging the ongoing processes for her removal Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has filed a suit challenging the ongoing processes for her removal

The general public is yet to hear directly from suspended Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, as the processes on three petitions for her removal continue.

Former Attorney General Godfred Dame, who is the lawyer for Justice Torkornoo, has now shared some details of her state of mind as she continues to make news headlines whenever there is a twist in the ongoing processes.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV on May 25, 2025, Godfred Dame disclosed that his client remains upbeat despite the bastardisation she has suffered over the past few weeks.

He indicated that the suspended Chief Justice, as a “very strong believer in the word of God”, is taking inspiration from the scriptures.

He said that Justice Torkornoo has told him that she is confident that, just like the “biblical David”, she will surmount the Goliath before her, and that she wants the people of Ghana to see this in a public hearing of the petitions against her.

“Well, she’s a very strong woman. She’s one of the strongest women I’ve ever seen. And indeed she said two things. She said, ‘As I was reflecting on the word of God,’ then she remembered that, yes, David was even able to defeat a Goliath. David was able to just use a very supposedly innocuous object to defeat a Goliath, and so there’s always hope. She finds confidence and trust in the word of God, and she knows that the truth will come out.

“That is why she wants light to be shed on the proceedings. That is why she wants a public hearing, so the public can hear her case. She has kept quiet so far, never made any comment at all whilst people disparage her and damnify her and all that. She’s waiting for the day to speak, and it must be, as is usually the case under the Constitution, a public hearing,” he said.

The former Attorney General also said that Justice Torkornoo told him that she is drawing inspiration from former US President Bill Clinton, who went through an impeachment process after sex abuse allegations were made against him.

He asserted that the Chief Justice believes that, at the end of the day, she will emerge victorious.

“Two, she also said that she remembered, in the times of her reflection on the word of God, she actually remembered that even the most powerful man in the free world, Bill Clinton, at that time had an impeachment trial.

“Bill Clinton went through an impeachment trial, and that was the person who was supposedly the President of the United States of America, the most powerful person, leader of the free world and all that. And at the end of the day, she will also have her day and all that,” he said.

Dame added, “So she’s very calm, reflecting on the word of God, and she knows that the truth will surely come out, except when they seek to suppress the truth in darkness, which is what she resists.”

President Mahama unveils automated system with just GH¢1 charge

Football fans slam Kudus for his poor performance in 2024/25 season

0

Mohammed Kudus' form dipped in the 2024/25 Premier League season Mohammed Kudus’ form dipped in the 2024/25 Premier League season

Ghanaian forward Mohammed Kudus has been criticised by some Ghanaians for his underwhelming performance in the 2024/2025 Premier League season.

The attacker scored five goals and provided four assists in 35 matches for West Ham United in all competitions, with 32 of those matches being in the Premier League.

These statistics show a drastic decline in the player’s performance compared to his previous season, where he made 48 appearances, scoring 18 goals and making 10 assists in the 2023/2024 Premier League season.

This triggered some concerned football fans to express their disappointment in the Ghanaian attacker for his inability to maintain his form from the previous season.

Others chastised Kudus for the abysmal performance, which did not help his club West Ham United, who struggled during the course of the season.

However, there were those who jumped to the player’s defense, arguing that the role he was assigned since Julen Lopetegui took charge of the club did not allow him to unleash his attacking prowess, thereby limiting his goal-scoring ability.

Uganda targeting LGBTQ community with hatred and violence: HRW

0

Rights groups and international partners condemned the 2023 law and withdrew funding Rights groups and international partners condemned the 2023 law and withdrew funding

Uganda’s LGBTQ community is facing intensified persecution following the enactment of harsh anti-gay laws two years ago, according to an international NGO.

In a report released on Monday, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said Ugandan authorities have “perpetrated widespread discrimination and violence” and “spread misinformation and hatred against LGBT people” since the 2023 law was enacted.

The 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act made consensual same-sex relations punishable by up to life imprisonment and “aggravated homosexuality” punishable by death.

As the legislation took effect, rights groups and international partners condemned the law and withdrew funding.

The HRW report says the government has followed up the legislation with a campaign of persecution, detailing widespread police abuse, including harassment, extortion, and arbitrary arrests based on perceived or actual sexual orientation or gender identity.

HRW found that the law has ramped up already existing abuse and discrimination against LGBTQ people to unprecedented heights. The report also detailed the rights violations enabled by the law and the devastating effect it has had on the lives of LGBTQ people, activists, allies, and their families in Uganda.

During the months leading up to and following the law being passed, the Ugandan authorities, including high-profile political and government figures, used traditional and social media to spread misinformation and hatred against LGBTQ people, the report notes, leading to an uptick in attacks and harassment against them and LGBTQ rights groups.

“For the last two years, LGBT Ugandans have suffered a range of abuses because of the government’s willful decision to legislate hate against them,” said Oryem Nyeko, senior Africa researcher at HRW.

“The Ugandan authorities need to urgently improve this environment, which enables a wide range of human rights violations and puts countless Ugandans at serious risk of abuse.”

“People would keep on calling you [saying]: ‘We know where you stay. We know what you do,’” one told HRW.

Another activist described how online threats escalated until three men broke into her home in 2023, attacking her and sexually assaulting her friend.

She told HRW that one assailant said: “You make me ashamed to be Ankole. If we want, we can kill you and no one will look for you.’” Ankole is one of Uganda’s main ethnic groups.

Other Ugandan rights groups have reported similar patterns since the law’s passage.

Within 24 hours of its enactment, eight cases of physical and sexual violence, including corrective rape, were identified, according to Kampala-based DefendDefenders.

“The number of requests [for assistance] is overwhelming,” a staff member told HRW.

Prominent LGBTQ organisations were also targeted, according to the report, including through group bans, staff arrests, and harassment of lawyers representing queer clients.

HRW contacted government, legal, and police authorities but received no response.

PURC meets GRIDCo, ECG, NEDCo on power crisis

0

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) convened an emergency stakeholder meeting on May 23, 2025 with the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), to address the ongoing electricity supply challenges and unplanned outages affecting parts of the country.

The meeting, initiated by the Commission after monitoring and receiving consumer complaints, aimed to understand the root causes of the recent power disruptions, assess the operational challenges facing utility service providers, and ensure the implementation of coordinated measures to restore and stabilise the electricity supply.

The Executive Secretary of PURC, Dr Shafic Suleman, reiterated the Commission’s mandate to protect consumer interests and uphold utility service standards.

“The Commission is seriously concerned about the frequent power outages being experienced in some regions. This meeting is a crucial step in ensuring that the causes are identified and urgent corrective actions are taken by all parties involved,” he said.

During the engagement, GRIDCo, ECG, and NEDCo provided detailed briefings on the technical and operational difficulties contributing to the supply instability, including long and widespread feeders, inadequate Bulk Supply Points (BSPs), tampering of the Electricity Network, Overload on System Components, overgrown vegetations, and effects of weather.

Following the briefings, the Commission directed the utilities to submit comprehensive reports on the current challenges, immediate mitigation measures, and long-term plans to prevent recurrence.

The Commission also emphasised the need for improved communication with the public during such disruptions to enhance transparency and public confidence.

The Commission will ensure strict compliance with performance standards to safeguard the reliability of electricity supply nationwide and urges consumers to report any challenges affecting utility service delivery in their localities.

The Commission is committed to protecting the interests of consumers and utility service providers and will continue to monitor the current power situation to ensure quality of service delivery.

10 Best MCU Anti-Heroes, Ranked

0

A major strength of the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains its ability to endear heroes, villains, and anti-heroes to fans to the same degree. Among all of the franchise’s characters, anti-heroes arguably follow the most interesting arcs. They are deeply flawed, morally ambiguous, and prone to misdirection, but they persevere, refusing to be defined by the hardships that made them that way. The MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and Thunderbolts* are notably led by anti-heroes, as shared trauma, loss, and misdeeds bring both films’ main characters together in a beautifully written found family dynamic. From MCU Phase 1 to Phase 5, anti-heroes permeate the comic book franchise’s best narratives, bringing a much-needed air of complexity to the superhero genre.

Ranked from worst to best, the following 10 MCU characters are the franchise’s most fascinating anti-heroes.

10) Ghost

Hannah John-Kamen in Thunderbolts*

Ava Starr/Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) stands as one of the coolest and most underrated anti-heroes in the MCU. First appearing as the antagonist of Ant-Man and the Wasp before joining the titular team in Thunderbolts*, Ava has the ability to turn herself invisible and intangible due to absorbing a large amount of quantum energy in the accident that killed her parents as a child. Ava worked as an operative for S.H.I.E.L.D and began to suffer from a lack of quantum energy, leading to her clash with Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), and Hope van Dyne/Wasp (Evangeline Lilly).

Turning from a tragic villain to an unlikely hero in Thunderbolts*, Ava has followed an intriguing arc that will soon continue in Avengers: Doomsday. The character’s traumatic backstory involving the loss of her parents and a lot of pain brought on by her quantum-induced condition set her on an errant professional path, but Ava fits in perfectly with the Thunderbolts/New Avengers. Also, Ava’s unique stealth capabilities and swift combat style make her a valuable asset to her allies.

9) Moon Knight

Oscar Isaac in Moon Knight

The masked vigilante Moon Knight (Oscar Isaac), also known as the alters Marc Spector, Steven Grant, and Jake Lockley, became a fan-favorite MCU anti-hero in just one appearance. Disney+’s Moon Knight series delves into the character’s history, violent acts, and experience with dissociative identity disorder as the avatar of the Egyptian god Khonshu (F. Murray Abraham). Moon Knight’s skill with a variety of weapons makes him a thrill to watch in combat sequences. Additionally, the switching between his white armor and dapper Mr. Knight suit nicely represents Marc and Steven’s personalities.

Yet, it’s the character beneath the mask that makes him so interesting. Moon Knight functions as an intricate character study, addressing themes of childhood trauma and mental health. Marc and Steven’s reconciliation with their past and their effort to protect each other in Moon Knight’s story produce some powerful and emotional moments. Isaac delivers an all-time MCU performance in the role, and hopefully, he gets the chance to bring Moon Knight back to the screen in the future.

8) Gamora

Zoe Saldaña in Avengers: Infinity War

The adopted daughter of Thanos (Josh Brolin), Gamora (Zoe Saldaña) joins the titular band of misfits in Guardians of the Galaxy. Prior to her team-up with Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and friends, Gamora operated as a lethal assassin for Thanos, who had previously wiped out half of her home planet, before betraying him and joining the Guardians. Gamora’s MCU arc was cut short in Avengers: Infinity War when Thanos threw her off of Vormir to obtain the Soul Stone, but she remains a powerful example of an individual discovering her place in the universe following a tragic childhood. Determined and loyal to her found family until the end, Gamora proves that she’s more than a ruthless killer. Even the time-altered version of the character in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 shows the compassion underneath Gamora’s cold-blooded exterior.

7) The Punisher

Jon Bernthal in The Punisher

Former U.S. Marine Frank Castle/The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) returned from war in Iraq and Afghanistan only to watch the slaughter of his family on home soil. Driven by vengeance, Frank became a merciless vigilante who carries out justice as he sees fit. Bernthal’s rendition of the anti-hero first appeared in Netflix’s Daredevil and The Punisher shows before making his MCU debut in Daredevil: Born Again. Although Frank’s violent methods depicted in the aforementioned shows are far from an ideal way to fix the world’s problems, the Punisher’s commitment to standing up for those neglected by the American justice system makes him easy to root for.

Frank has a complicated relationship with Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox) due to their contrasting worldviews, but the two vigilantes harbor respect for one another and exist as fascinating foils in the Marvel universe. An upcoming Marvel Television special will tell the next chapter of the Punisher’s story, and fans should look forward to seeing where Frank’s shaky morals take him next.

6) Bucky Barnes

Sebastian Stan in Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Bucky Barnes’s (Sebastian Stan) status as an anti-hero stems from his time spent as the Winter Soldier, an elite assassin brainwashed and controlled by HYDRA. A Super Soldier and World War II veteran, Bucky has left his dark days behind, reconnecting with his best friend Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and establishing strong relationships with Sam Wilson/Captain America (Anthony Mackie), his fellow Thunderbolts members, and more. From his debut in Captain America: The First Avenger to his most recent MCU outing in Thunderbolts*, Bucky proves a model of perseverance.

Severely impacted by the violent acts he was forced to commit as the Winter Soldier, Bucky claws his way back to his true self and decides to use his superhuman abilities for good. Beyond the inner workings of his character, Bucky exudes swagger whenever he graces the screen. His highway rampage in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and motorcycle entrance in Thunderbolts* cement him as a formidable combatant that anyone would want on their side.

5) Rocket

Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Backstories hardly get more tragic than that of Rocket (Bradley Cooper). Prior to forming the Guardians of the Galaxy, the raccoon spent his early days in the High Evolutionary’s (Chukwudi Iwuji) laboratory, where he and his animal friends were subjected to torturous experiments meant to heighten their abilities. Rocket emerged as the lone survivor of his escape attempt, subsequently leading a life of crime with Groot (Vin Diesel) before meeting Quill, Gamora, and the rest of the Guardians.

Rocket’s traumatic history factors into his aversive personality, but his time with the Guardians shows that he has a big heart. A truly lovable MCU character, Rocket is effortlessly funny, cares about his friends, and isn’t afraid of compromising morals to achieve his goals. Rocket may just be the MCU’s coolest criminal, and his arc from an innocent young raccoon to a witty, trustworthy companion and hard-nosed fighter stands out as a fantastic piece of storytelling.

4) Loki

Tom Hiddleston in Thor: Ragnarok

The MCU’s original version of Loki (Tom Hiddleston) remains a top-tier character in the franchise. Introduced in Thor as the adopted son of Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and brother of Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Loki initially resents and betrays his family and Asgard due to their disfavor of him. Still, the God of Mischief teams up with Thor amid the destruction of their world in Thor: Ragnarok, and Loki met his demise while bravely fighting Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.

Loki’s MCU story is one filled with humor, heartbreak, triumph, and tragedy. He’s evil, charming, and sympathetic all at once, and Hiddleston’s performance greatly enhances the character’s complexity. Loki is so richly layered that it’s hard to decide whether to root for or against him throughout his MCU appearances. The numerous variants portrayed in the Disney+ series Loki offer a unique and captivating exploration of the anti-hero’s identity, as he fulfills his destiny as the God of Stories.

3) Nebula

Nebula (Karen Gillan), the other adopted daughter of Thanos, was trained and used as a weapon alongside Gamora. The Mad Titan horrifically abused Nebula, forcing her to fight her sister and replacing a part of her with machinery each time she lost. Nebula begins as an antagonist in Guardians of the Galaxy and later embarks on a path of redemption, falling in with the team, rekindling her bond with Gamora, and leaving her life as an assassin behind. Although short-tempered and evidently traumatized by her rough childhood, Nebula learns to lean on her fellow Guardians for support and discovers that she can make a difference in the world.

The anti-hero’s pivotal role in the fight against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame represents the culmination of her journey, as she reckons with the past version of herself and rises up against the father she once feared. This all satisfyingly concludes at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 with Nebula becoming the leader of Knowhere, promising to make it the home she never had. Nebula’s outstanding story arc is elevated by Gillan, whose performance radiates Nebula’s harshness, deep-rooted torment, and desire to overcome her morally gray history, all while seamlessly fitting in with the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy’s humorous tone. It’s hard to identify an MCU character arc as compelling and fulfilling as Nebula’s, as her story beautifully embodies healing and growth after unimaginable suffering.

2) Yelena Belova

Florence Pugh in Thunderbolts*

When it comes to MCU anti-heroes, Yelena Belova’s (Florence Pugh) arc is almost unrivaled. The younger adopted sister of Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) grew up in America with a makeshift family of Russian spies and, at the age of six, was sent to General Dreykov’s (Ray Winstone) Red Room to be chemically brainwashed and trained as an assassin. Yelena’s new dawn arrives in Black Widow when a fellow widow liberates her using a counteragent. Free to live on her own terms, Yelena reconnects with Natasha and their parents, destroys Dreykov’s Red Room, and sets off to free the remaining mind-controlled assassins across the globe. A dark cloud hangs over Yelena in the wake of Natasha’s death as she leads a solitary life as a gun for hire before converging with the Thunderbolts.

Yelena’s arc in Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Thunderbolts* cements her as the perfect successor to Johansson’s Black Widow, and this time, the MCU gets the character right. Far more than a prolific killer, Yelena is a three-dimensional being whose excitement to live freely devolves into grief, depression, and loneliness. Despite the pain of her past and dissatisfaction with her place in the world, Yelena never abandons her genuine compassion for others, and by the end of Thunderbolts*, she finds a group of similar anti-heroes she can both rely on. Pugh elevates Yelena’s extraordinary character development, impeccably combining humor, anguish, viciousness, and humanity.

1) Wanda Maximoff

Elizabeth Olsen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

The MCU’s best anti-hero arc belongs to Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), otherwise known as the Scarlet Witch. Wanda’s tragic story begins in her childhood when the bombing of her home in Sokovia killed her parents. Since then, she suffers the loss of her twin brother Pietro (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) in Avengers: Age of Ultron and romantic partner Vision (Paul Bettany) in Avengers: Infinity War. Even after creating a false reality in which she and Vision start a family together in WandaVision, Wanda endures heartbreak when she must tear it all down to free the people of Westview. Wanda’s unprocessed trauma and grief factor into her villainous turn in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Often vilified for her immense power, Wanda defies her morally gray history to become an Avenger and fulfill her destiny as the Scarlet Witch. Wanda hasn’t always made the best choices, but she continuously proves redeemable and willing to right her wrongs. Additionally, Olsen is magnetic as Wanda, authentically radiating layers of sorrow, resolve, and fury over the course of her appearances. The MCU wonderfully fleshes out Wanda as an intensely relatable anti-hero who one can’t help but support in spite of her flaws. Ranking among the franchise’s most compelling characters overall, Wanda stands out as the MCU’s most complex and fascinating anti-hero story.

Thunderbolts* is now playing in theaters.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, arrived at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service in Accra on Monday, May 26, 2025, dressed in an all-white attire and appeared to be in high spirits.

Chairman Wontumi, as he is popularly known, was accompanied by the former Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, as he honoured an invitation extended to him by the state security agency.

In a video shared by Kwaku Dawuro, a journalist with Wontumi Media, Chairman Wontumi was seen being greeted by a group of individuals believed to be sympathisers who had gathered to show their support. Among them was the Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Yandoh.

He was escorted to the main entrance of the building, where he blew a kiss to his sympathisers before proceeding inside.

His visit to the CID headquarters follows a raid by security operatives at his residence on Friday, May 23, 2025.

Speaking in an interview with his media house, Wontumi Radio, on Friday, May 23, 2025, the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman indicated that the security officials who stormed his house were from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), adding that they were there to arrest him.

He indicated that before the attempted arrest, the Ghana Police Service had already invited him to their office, so he would resist any attempt of the NIB to arrest him.

“… I called Mr Offie (a police officer) and told him that on Monday, May 26,2025, we would report to his office. He told me that I should write a receiving note that I had accepted their invitation and added that I would be coming on Monday.

“I did what he asked me to do and gave (sic) them what they requested. Yet, when I woke up this morning, I saw a lot of people in front of my house saying the BNI boss in Kumasi had asked them to come for me. I told them that the police had already informed me that they needed me to assist with an investigation, and I have told them that I will be reporting to them on Monday – so why would he send for me?” Wontumi narrated in Twi.

“I told him no and that I was going to call the police officer. When I called the police, they said they had not sent any person to pick me up and that they are waiting for me to report on Monday,” he added.

It is not clear why the security officials were at Wontumi’s home, but the government recently suspended the mining licence of his company, Akonta Mining, accusing it of engaging in illegal mining activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve in the Western Region.

Chairman Wontumi has refuted the accusation, stating that he is being targeted because of his bid to run for the National Chairmanship position of the NPP.

Stop abusing power over NPP arrests

0

Ibrahim Adjei, former Assistant Secretary at the Office of former President Nana Akufo-Addo, has issued a strong caution to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration over what he describes as the abuse of state power in actions targeting members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

His warning follows the arrests and investigations of prominent NPP figures, including youth activist Alfred Ababio Kumi, widely known as Adenta Kumi, and Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on May 26, Ibrahim Adjei urged the ruling party to exercise its authority within the bounds of the law, warning that political power is not permanent and must be used in the public interest, not against it.

“The NDC administration must be mindful that this power, as far as you may wish for it, is not everlasting. And so, because of that, you need to work within the confines of the law and in the interest of the public in executing what you deem as necessary. I was just giving that as a caution.

“Let us work and make sure that the democracy that underpins our democracy, we follow it. In every administration, including the NPP, we have to learn from these things and do a better job. You can get Adenta Kumi, Chairman Wontumi, even Ibrahim Adjei to come and answer questions, but do so by the law and upholding the rights of the people,” he said.

His comments come in the wake of Adenta Kumi’s arrest by operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) last Friday. Kumi has since been charged with the publication of false news after allegedly making unsubstantiated claims on social media and in a radio interview.

The claims related to a petition he submitted to the President, calling for the dissolution of a committee probing the Chief Justice. He has since been released following high-level discussions involving security officials and the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

In a related development, Chairman Wontumi is also in the spotlight after a failed attempt by a joint team of National Security and police officers to arrest him at his residence last Friday, May 23. Though the reason for the operation remains undisclosed, it provoked outrage from NPP supporters who massed up at his home in protest, condemning the show of force.

Wontumi, during the tense standoff, reportedly assured the officers he would honour the invitation and is expected to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). Monday, May 26.
