Ward keen to silence doubters as Villa target fifth straight win –

0

Aston Villa boss Carla Ward hopes to keep proving the doubters wrong by maintaining her side’s climb up the Women’s Super League table.

Ward was under severe pressure after the Villans lost their first five league matches this season and sat rock-bottom but she is now targeting the top six following four straight wins in all competitions.

Villa bid to extend the run to five matches on Sunday at home against Everton.

Ward said: “It’s what I’ve done my whole career, is prove people wrong.

“In football, you can lose a few games and your under pressure, you’re the worst, you need to go, you’re clueless. You win a few games and you’re back to doing your job.

“What I will say is, the football club backed me, the fans have backed me, the players have backed me. It was really important that we stuck together and we’re in a good place.”

When Villa lost their fifth successive league game, a 6-0 home defeat to Chelsea at the start of this month, Ward’s future was in doubt.

She added: “It’s funny isn’t it?

“We were sat here only three weeks ago, bottom of the league and everyone’s saying what they’ve got to say and then if we win at the weekend and results go our way, all of a sudden you’re sitting seventh, knocking on the door for top six.”

Rachel Daly has scored in Aston Villa’s last two matches in all competitions

Ward has no new injury concerns following Wednesday’s 7-0 win against Blackburn in the Conti Cup but defender Lucy Parker is still out.

Everton, winless in their last four league games and a point below Villa in 10th place, are still without Elise Stenevik and Lucy Hope.

Manager Brian Sorensen revealed Italy midfielder Aurora Galli will be assessed after sustaining a knock on Thursday in training.

The club confirmed later on Friday that Martina Piemonte will start a three-match ban.

The Italy striker has been charged with violent conduct after an off-the-ball incident during last weekend’s home draw against Bristol City and Everton opted not to appeal this decision.

Ward Excos Disown Kano APC Faction That Suspended Ganduje

0

A faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ganduje ward, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State, loyal to
Abdullahi Ganduje has disowned the group that suspended him as the Party’s National Chairman.

Recall that on Sunday, a faction of the APC ward executives in Ganduje ward, suspended the immediate past Governor of the State.

Ja’afar Ganduje, Secretary of the faction, had alleged that Ganduje engaged in anti-party activities.

In a quick response, the faction loyal to Ganduje claimed that the leader of the other group is a member of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), who contested a councilorship seat in the State.

The statement, jointly signed by Ahmed Ganduje and Usaini Jibrinz, Chairman and Secretary of Ganduje ward, read: “To the best of our knowledge, as executive members of Ganduje ward of the APC, there was no new election of new leadership of our party. We remain the same executives of the ward.”

The faction further called on APC national leadership to facilitate the arrest of those parading themselves as ward leaders for impersonation and attempt to disrupt the party.

The faction alleged that the other group used “a fake or uncertified headed paper on which they drew a list of non-existing party executives.”

War with Russia closer to end than we think – Zelensky

0

Sept 24 (BBC/GNA) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said the war with Russia could end sooner than some people think.

“I think that we are closer to peace than we think. We just have to be very strong, very strong,” he said.

Speaking to US broadcaster ABC News, Zelensky also said that the victory plan he will present to US President Joe Biden this week will require Ukraine’s allies to “strengthen” the Ukrainian army.

Zelensky said the plan is not about negotiating with Russia, but rather it is “a bridge to a diplomatic way out, to stop the war”.

He added that Ukraine can only push Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the conflict if Kyiv is coming from a “strong position”.

On Tuesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia was being cautious about media reports of a Ukrainian plan and added that the conflict would only end when Russia’s aims were achieved.

WAR IS COMING: See the strong message Zambia sent to SA about 22 Afghanistan that left SA shaken

The whereabouts of the 22 Afghan asylum seekers who triumphed in their court battle to gain entry into South Africa remain shrouded in uncertainty. While HA spokesperson Siya Qoza revealed in an interview that they remain outside the country, a twist emerges from a report received by Dudula News. According to their report, the asylum seekers purportedly departed for South Africa from Zambia three months prior.

This conflicting information raises questions about the accuracy of their current status. Are they truly outside the nation’s borders, as stated by the HA spokesperson, or have they surreptitiously managed to embark on their journey to South Africa, as suggested by the report?

The plight of these asylum seekers serves as a reminder of the complex and often convoluted nature of immigration processes. It underscores the importance of transparent communication from official sources to dispel any confusion and provide clarity regarding the true circumstances of these individuals. As the world watches, the search for these 22 Afghan asylum seekers continues, shedding light on the intricacies of asylum-seeking and immigration policies.

War in Ukraine can create political instability in parts of Africa – KAIPTC

0

By Edward Acquah

Accra, July 5, GNA – The war in Ukraine has the potential to create political divisions in some parts of Africa particularly in countries where leaders may not want to give up their positions as Heads of State.

Such leaders may seek the backing of Russia to satisfy their political agenda and that can threaten peace and security on the continent.

These are some concerns raised by Air Commodore George Kweku Arko-Dadzie, the Deputy Commandant of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), at the opening of a closed-door meeting at Teshie, near Accra, to assess the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on Africa.

Air Commodore Arko-Dadzie said although the war in Ukraine threatened global peace, it also had the potential to turn Russia into a fortress that would pursue an aggressive foreign policy in Africa and other weaker regions.

He said Russia through its foreign policy could also work to gain allies, markets, raw materials, and diversify its external relations.

“The effect may also have some ramifications on African politics as similarly persecuted rogue African leaders who do not want to give up their positions as Heads of state may seek Russian backing, this will likely threaten the peace and security in the continent.”

He added: “Africa would likely see more instability and dissatisfaction as a result of its reliance on food and other imports from Russia and the Ukraine.”

Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24th February 2022.

The United Nations estimates that about 1.6 billion people in 94 countries are exposed to at least one dimension of finance, energy and food crisis because of the war in Ukraine.

With more than 40 per cent of wheat consumed in Africa usually sourced from Russia and Ukraine, the UN has cautioned that cost-of-living crisis on the continent could worsen if the war continued.

Speaking to journalists, Dr Emma Birikorang, the Deputy Director of the Faculty of Academic Affairs and Research, KAIPTC, said assessment of the impact of the war in Ukraine should go beyond economic crisis to include security implications on the continent.

She said some transitional governments that had received security support from Russia had been emboldened to defy sanctions from regional authorities.

“We have seen how the Wagner Security Group is now shoring up certain regimes in the region – Mali, Niger, Central African Republic. We see how they are now providing protection for Heads of State and transitional governments.

“In Mali, we see how the transitional Government is able to defy ECOWAS authority because they have a strong security presence in the region,” Dr Birikorang said.

War coming back to Russia

0

Mr Medvedev, who is deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council – a body chaired by Mr Putin – said on social media there would be “no other option” if Ukraine took what he described as “our land”.

Officials said there were no injuries following Saturday’s drone attack, and the city’s mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the facades of two office buildings were slightly damaged.

Photos from the scene show that several windows have been damaged at the corner of the buildings, with debris scattered on the ground below.

One eyewitness, who only gave her first name as Liya, told Reuters news agency she could see fire and smoke.

“We heard an explosion and it was like a wave, everyone jumped,” she said.

“Then there was a lot of smoke and you couldn’t see anything. From above, you could see fire.”

Flights were briefly suspended from Vnukovo Airport, southwest of the city centre, and incoming planes were redirected to other airports.

In a statement, the defence ministry said the “attempted terrorist attack” had been “thwarted”.

Moscow, located about 500km (310 miles) from the Ukrainian border, has rarely been targeted since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

But Russia has accused Ukraine of launching a series of drone strikes on its territory in recent months, including several on the capital.

The most notable was in May, when Russia claimed Ukraine used two drones to attack the Kremlin – the heart of the city. Ukraine denied attacking the Kremlin or targeting President Vladimir Putin.

Russia’s defence ministry says Ukraine also carried out an overnight drone attack on Crimea – territory which was annexed by Russia in 2014. Officials say 16 drones were destroyed and a further nine were suppressed, Tass news agency reports.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials say a Russian missile attack on the city of Sumy, in the north east of the country, has left one person dead and five injured.

A building was destroyed in an explosion at about 20:00 local time (17:00 GMT), according to public broadcaster Suspilne.

Officials also say two people were killed in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia on Saturday.

War College Not Necessary; Build An Agricultural College Instead – Nunoo-Mensah To Akufo-Addo |

0

Former Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, Joseph Nunoo-Mensah, Brigadier (retired) has said Ghana does not need a war college.

In his view, instead of a war college, the government must build an Agricultural college to promote agriculture to feed the nation because Ghanaians are hungry.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced plans to establish a war college in the country at the Ghana Armed Forces’ 2022 end-of-year West African Soldiers Social Activities (WASSA) celebrations at Burma camp in Accra.

The war college, which is to be established with a seed capital from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), is expected to be the capstone of Ghana’s military education system.

It is meant to provide and improve the professional education of the highest levels of military leadership when established.

The war college if established will educate and train senior military tacticians, strategists, and leaders advanced tactical and strategic thought, doctrines and policies.

But Mr Nunoo-Mensah says the college is not necessary.

Speaking on the Class Morning Show on Class91.3FM on Tuesday, 7 February 2023, he said “Akufo-Addo is my friend, I campaigned with him to be NPP flagbearer in 1998 but even if you are my friend I’ll tell you my piece of mind…what we need is not a war college but agricultural college to feed the people, the people are hungry.”

He said the Kofi Annan Peace Keeping Training Center has the capacity to train the military in whatever capacity, hence, there is no need for a war college when there are pressing issues like hunger.

“We need agricultural college and the reason is that Ghanaians are very hungry, I am hungry…involve everybody in farming because food is very expensive…” he added.

War and instability bring African governance progress to a halt: Report

0

Mohamed Toumba, one of the soldiers who ousted Niger's then-President Mohamed Bazoum last year, Mohamed Toumba, one of the soldiers who ousted Niger’s then-President Mohamed Bazoum last year,

Progress in democratic governance in Africa has ground to a halt, according to a new report issued by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.

The latest edition of the Ibrahim Index of African Governance, published on Wednesday, found that progress in governance across the continent came to a halt in 2022 following four years of “almost complete stagnation”.

Backsliding in 21 countries means that nearly half of Africa’s population lives with standards of governance that have declined over the past decade, according to billionaire philanthropist Mo Ibrahim.

“It’s not pretty,” he said before the release. “If there is deterioration in governance, if there is corruption, if there is marginalisation … people are going to pick up arms.”

Noting the link between poor governance and violence, Ibrahim referred to “a huge arc of instability and conflicts”, and highlighted the war in Sudan and coups in West and Central Africa.

Pandemic lockdowns and the global trend towards “strongman politics” may have emboldened autocrats, he added.

Concern was also expressed over the “financial straitjacket” in which African countries are stuck owing to heavy debt burdens and the high premiums they must pay to access cash from global lenders.

“It’s circular,” Ibrahim said. “When you don’t have enough money to build infrastructure, to deal with health or education, you start to lose control and that affects security … We need to cut this vicious circle to enable people to invest in the future.”

Standards have fallen across Africa, including in high-ranking countries, with Indian Ocean nation Mauritius knocked off the top spot by the Seychelles after registering a decade of deteriorating standards.

Progress was seen in 33 countries, with improvements in areas like infrastructure and women’s equality for roughly 95 percent of Africans – albeit from low bases.

But the good news was undermined by falling scores in areas like the rule of law, rights, political participation and, especially, security.

The report, which measures variables like public services, justice, corruption and security, is considered the most comprehensive overview of African governance.

WAPCo’s Gas Volumes Drop –

0

The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has revealed that it is currently experiencing a drop in gas volumes available for transportation.

The company explained that the challenge is due to ongoing maintenance works by one of its gas producers in Nigeria.

A statement issued by WAPCo noted, “One of the producers of the natural gas WAPCo transports from Nigeria has shut down its facility for a three-week maintenance.”

It continued, “This has resulted in a decrease of gas available for WAPCo to transport to customers in Togo, Benin and Ghana. The current situation is entirely out of WAPCo’s control.”

The statement indicated that WAPCo continues to transport gas from the Western Region of Ghana to Tema, and that it is expected that normalcy will return after the maintenance activities.

The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) owns and operates the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP).

The pipeline is a regional infrastructure linking natural gas resources to customers with a growing demand for cleaner and more efficient energy in the West African sub-region, particularly, in Ghana.

The WAGP is a bi-directional pipeline system with gas supply from both east (Nigeria) and west (Ghana) of the pipeline system.

WAPCo undertakes planned 10-day shutdown of Takoradi facility

0

The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo), has said it will undertake a coordinated and planned 10-day maintenance shutdown of its Takoradi Regulating and Metering Station.

This shutdown, scheduled for 12th to 22nd January 2023, is to allow for the replacement of some critical ves at the facility aimed at securing the safety and integrity of the Takoradi Station, the management said.

Accordingly, there will be no gas transportation from our Takoradi facility to customers in the Tema power enclave during the period of the shutdown.

“We will however continue to deliver gas from Nigeria to Tema based on volumes agreed between the customer and the shipper.

“This shut down is supported by the Ministry of Energy (MoE) and coordinated with Ghana Grid Company Ltd (GRIDCo), the Volta River Authority (VRA), the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and other key stakeholders to minimize the impact of the shutdown on communities that rely on power generated from cleaner and more efficient gas transported through the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP).

“WAPCo wishes to apologize to its customers in Tema for the inconvenience that may be caused by the planned shutdown. We will work collaboratively with our contractors to ensure that the shutdown activities are safely executed and within the timeline stated herein.

“Gas supply would be immediately restored after completion of the maintenance works and commissioning of the Takoradi facility,” a statement said.

WAPCo to commence planned pipeline cleaning and inspection on November 25

0

The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo), has announced the beginning of its planned cleaning and inspection of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) on Monday, November 25, 2024,

WAPCo in a statement said the comprehensive cleaning and inspection exercise is a key maintenance and regulatory requirement to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the pipeline.

It added that the exercise aligns with industry best practices, and will cover the entire pipeline infrastructure, from Itoki in Ogun State in Nigeria to Takoradi in the Western Region of Ghana.

“It is part of WAPCo’s ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity of the WAGP and ensure its continued safe and reliable operation across the West African region.

“The project will be in two phases. The first phase which begins on Monday 25 November, involves the cleaning and inspection of the onshore section of the pipeline which is located in Nigeria. This first phase is scheduled to last for 10 days.

“WAPCo has engaged relevant stakeholders ahead of this exercise and does not anticipate any major disruption to gas transportation services to customers.”

According to WAPCo, the second phase of the project is scheduled to begin in January 2025, stressing that it will temporarily suspend the reverse flow transportation of gas from the Western Region of Ghana to Tema within that period.

“This involves the cleaning and inspection of the main section of the pipeline, which is offshore, stretching from Badagry, in the Lagos State, Nigeria to Takoradi, in the Western Region of Ghana. During the offshore cleaning and inspection period in 2025, WAPCo will temporarily suspend reverse flow transportation of gas from the Western Region of Ghana to Tema, Ghana.

“This will also necessitate the shutdown of key facilities in Tema, Ghana; Lomé, Togo; and Cotonou, Benin. Also, WAPCo will replace subsea valves located at these strategic locations to enhance operational safety.”

WAPCo denies having technical issues; dissociates from Friday night’s outage

0

The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has denied assertions that the power outage recorded Friday night in several parts of the country was as a result of technical challenges including limited gas supply at its end.

“WAPCo wishes to set the record straight that we did not have any technical issues and our facilities were, and still are, fully available to deliver gas,” the Company said in a press release on Saturday, July 8.

Signed by the General Manager for Corporate Affairs, Dr Isaac Adjei Doku, the press release explained that the cause of the outage was a downtime recorded by Ghana National Gas Company’s plant at Atuabo and, therefore, ran out of gas for WAPCo to transport.

“WAPCo transports gas based on its agreements with gas shippers,” the press release further explained.

“These shippers purchase gas from gas suppliers, transport the gas via WAPCo pipelines, and sell the natural gas to Gas Off takers (mainly power companies).

“When the agreed volume of gas is made available, WAPCo dutifully transports it to the shipper’s customers.

“The challenge yesterday was that the Ghana National Gas Company’s plant at Atuabo went down and therefore there was no gas available for WAPCo to transport.”

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) had blamed the technical challenges at WAPCo for the outage.

They said the unexpected power cut was as a result of “gas supply challenges emanating from Atuabo and a WAPCo technical issue”.

Power has since been restored in the affected communities.

Wanted Singer Primeboy Surrenders Self To Police

The Lagos State Police Command has said that Nigerian singer, Owodunni Ibrahim, also known as Primeboy, has turned himself in after he was declared wanted on Wednesday.

Recall that the state Police declared Primeboy wanted and placed N1 million bounty on his head over his refusal to honour police invitation in connection with the death of singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

In a post via his X handle on Thursday, the spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the singer turned himself in after he was declared wanted.

According to Nigeria’s Lagos State Police command, singer and a friend of the late Mohbad, Owodunni Ibrahim Oluwatosin, widely known as Primeboy, who was declared wanted by the police earlier this week, has voluntarily surrendered himself to the authorities.

The announcement was made by Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State police spokesman, in a tweet on Thursday afternoon.

Hundeyin provided insight into why the police had declared Primeboy wanted, stating, “Following his being declared wanted, he has immediately been taken into custody for interrogation and other necessary actions.”

The Lagos State Police Command reiterated its commitment to conducting a thorough and diligent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s tragic death.

Hundeyin emphasized, “The Command equally assures that all persons found guilty in the death of Mr. Ilerioluwa Aloba, aka Mohbad, will definitely be brought to justice.”

The untimely passing of Mohbad on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27, under controversial circumstances, sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s music industry and his fanbase.

Amidst growing speculation and rumors surrounding his death, Primeboy was declared wanted by the police.

On September 14, an Instagram blogger, Temilola Sobola, posted a video in which Primeboy vehemently denied any involvement in his friend’s demise. Primeboy expressed deep shock over the sudden loss of Mohbad and claimed to have no knowledge of what transpired leading to his death.

Wanted Notorious Cultist, Serial Killer Arrested In Osun

0

The Osun State Police Command has arrested Bode Owoeye, better known as Bode Itaapa, a notorious cultist and reputed serial killer, on charges of conspiracy, armed robbery, illegal possession of forbidden guns, and murder.

The police command declared Owoeye, 32, wanted for his role in the Aiye Confraternity, which has been prohibited in the state.

Yemisi Opalola, spokesperson for the Osun Police Command, announced Owoeye’s arrest during a suspect parade in Osogbo on Friday.

She added that his arrest at Ilesa was the result of solid intelligence available to the command.

Opalola also revealed that during interrogation, Owoeye admitted to being a notorious political thug whose group worked for Sanya Omirin, a Peoples Democratic Party House of Representatives member for Ijesa South Federal Constituency.

According to the police spokesperson: “On 9th February, 2024, at about 6:20 pm, complainants reported at Iperindo Police Station that, on 8th February, 2024, their children Kelechi Agha and Tega Robinson left homes to their mining sites and they did not return before the case was transferred to the Anti-Kidnapping Squad for discreet investigation.

“Credible intelligence revealed that members of the Aye Confraternity were sighted freely moving around with dangerous weapons on that day, which led the detectives to search the hideouts of the cultists, where one Beretta pistol and a black mask were found and registered as exhibits.

“Subsequently, the detectives on the rescue mission later apprehended one Bode Owoeye, aka “Bode Itaapa,” who was identified as a member of Aye Confraternity and who was on the wanted list of Osun State.

“During the interrogation, he confessed that other members of Aye confraternity were responsible for the abduction and killing of the victims inside the bush.

“He also admitted that his group was the political thugs working for one Honourable Sanya Omirin, who usually gives them instructions through another wanted cultist, Adefioye Solomon, aka Solo Iwara, who is responsible for so many killings within the Ilesha axis.

“Also, he confessed that they attacked one Honourable Ayodeji Olaolu, the APC candidate, during the election into the House of Representatives in 2023, at the party secretariat and shot him in his head and chest.

“He further revealed that the confraternity had over 30 pump action rifles, which were mostly procured before the 2023 election.

“Subsequently, the detectives arrested one Samuel David, who was mentioned to be a member of Aye Confraternity and involved in the killing of one Ibrahin Taiwo, aka Omo-Alhaja.

“During the investigations, the suspect mentioned his five fellow hitmen under Kehinde Itaapa, who stormed the venue of the PDP rally on 21/02/2023 and killed the deceased. In the course of the investigation, one of the complainants came to report that, she was the mother of late Taiwo Adebiyi, aka “Omo-Alhaja,” and alleged one Shittu Lekan, aka “Araba” to be the killer of her son.

“Samuel David later took the detectives to Oke-Eta village, where he kept one pump action gun, given to him by Bode Owoeye to perpetrate the crime and it was recovered as an exhibit. Olabode Owoeye stated further that he bought the gun from Mukaila Lateef, his arms dealer, who illegally sold some guns to him.”

Mukaila Lateef, 45, and David Samuel, 26 years old, were arrested with Owoeye.

The police recovered one blue unregistered TVS motorcycle, one locally made Beretta pistol with three live ammunition, one single barrel gun and one pump action.

Other items include a black unregulated Highlander Jeep, a black facemask, several charms, and two crossbags.

Opalola stated that attempts are underway to apprehend the fleeing members, and the accused would be charged in court once the inquiry is completed.

Wanted NDC Constituency Organizer to report to police [Listen]

The Manhyia South constituency organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region, Mustapha Alhassan, is scheduled to appear at the police headquarters today.

This was after he was declared wanted over a viral video in which he was threatening electoral violence ahead of the December election.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the summons, the party’s regional executives will be accompanying Mustapha Alhassan to the police station with a legal team.

The NDC’s Ashanti Regional Secretary, Dr. Frank Amoakohene in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem that the party is fully prepared to handle any legal proceedings at the police headquarters.

He disclosed their readiness to take decisive action, including initiating the arrest of the NPP official Mustapha Alhassan, who was also present on the show.

“We are going with our lawyers, and we are ready for whatever legal tussle. If we need to file a counter-complaint for them to arrest the NPP official, we will do the same, and if we need to perform a citizen’s arrest and bring the NPP official to the police, we will do that” he said.

He stressed the importance of maintaining the presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction, adding that Mustapha Alhassan should not be prejudged in this matter.

In his view, Mustapha Alhassan is a victim of misreporting because he was responding to his co-panelist but did not mean anything he said

“From our investigations and checks, the officer was only serving notice to the NPP official that anybody who rigs the 2024 elections is only preparing a platform for blablabla… and so it was a response to the NPP official, and we can’t be prejudicial condemning someone without hearing him out” Dr. Amoakohene added.

Want to give birth to twins? Here are 5 ways to increase your chances

0

Having twins is not just a matter of chance; there’s so much you can do to give birth to twins.

Many people would love to give birth to twins because they are cute and shorten the stress of undergoing childbirth many times.

There are two types of twins: fraternal twins and identical twins.

Identical twins are born when an egg is fertilised by a single sperm and two identical twins with the same sex and DNA are produced.

Fraternal twins are born when two different eggs are fertilised by two sperm cells. They can be of different sexes, lack the same DNA, and do not look alike.

Consuming dairy products can increase the chances of twin pregnancies due to the growth hormones released by cows in their milk.

Dairy foods can boost insulin-like growth factor (IGF) production in women, promoting the release of eggs by the ovary and making two more likely to be fertilised simultaneously.

Finding a partner with a family history of twins increases the chances of having twins. If you have a lot of twins in your family and your partner does, there is an even higher chance you will give birth to twins.

Studies have found that people with a body mass index of 30 have a higher chance of giving birth to twins.

Obesity increases the chance of twin pregnancies due to increased levels of oestrogen, a female sex hormone, and excessive stimulation of the ovaries that comes from extra body fat.

This can result in multiple eggs being released instead of one.

Those over 30 years old are more likely to conceive twins due to increased production of the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which is responsible for egg development in the ovaries. Lower fertility levels can cause follicles to overreact, releasing multiple eggs and causing multiple births.

Expecting mothers who undergo IVF may be given drugs that boost the likelihood of twin pregnancies. Twin pregnancies are more likely, depending on how many embryos are transferred during the procedure.

If numerous embryos are transferred, the successful attachment and development of two or more embryos into a set of twins or more may result in fraternal twins.

Want a stronger relationship? Ask these 3 questions

0

Whether you’re just starting to date someone or you’re out there meeting new people, most of us want to know how to better connect with our date. But let’s face it, figuring out how to can be tricky.

Luckily, dating coach Sabrina Zohar has three questions that you can ask to help deepen your emotional connection with the person you’re dating.

Three Questions That Will Deepen Your Relationship

1. What’s the worst thing an ex would say about you?

When you’re getting to know someone, learning about their past relationships can help deepen your bond and give you valuable insight into who they are.

So, after you’ve been dating for a while, go ahead and ask them, “What is the worst thing that an ex or past date would say about you,” says Zohar.

Zohar goes on to say that one of her old clients used to say that his exes always complained about his bad communication.

Unsurprisingly, this client couldn’t keep a relationship because of their horrible communication skills.

This is why asking this question is so important. Seeing how they respond and if they take accountability is a great sign that the person you’re dating will make a great partner.

Moreover, it opens the door for a deeper conversation, leading to a deeper connection with your date.

2. What’s your biggest fear about being in a relationship?

If you really want to get personal, ask them what their greatest fears are when it comes to being in a relationship, suggests Zohar. Now, you may be asking, “Why is this important?”

But as Zohar points out, “Fear is what’s driving most of us.” And addressing that fear can lead to an honest and vulnerable conversation with your date.

This also helps you both work as a team, helping you resolve any issues you may have together.

3. What’s one thing about you that people don’t notice immediately, but you wish they did?

Want to know the person you’re dating better? Ask them, “What’s one thing about you that people don’t notice right away, but you wish they did?”

Through this, you’ll begin to learn about your date’s values and characteristics. You’ll learn what’s important to them and what traits they treasure the most.

This line of questioning can also help you to see how much you truly have in common with this person.

But remember, it’s best to have these conversations when you’ve known each other for at least a couple of months.

Getting too personal too quickly can throw people off and make them uncomfortable. So, make sure you’ve already built some sort of connection before asking these questions.

Dating and building real connections isn’t easy. Vulnerability isn’t something that comes naturally to most people, and finding someone who’s looking for a deep connection isn’t always the easiest in our current dating world.

But if you’ve been seeing someone for a while and want to begin strengthening your bond, then asking these three questions can definitely help.

Wanlov the Kubolor gives reasons he will not vote for Kennedy Agyapong –

0

Ghanaian artiste Wanlov the Kubolor has stated some reasons why he would not be voting for presidential aspirant and MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong.

This was in response to a Twitter poll by GhanaWeb on October 16 asking social media users for their reasons why they would not vote for Kennedy Agyapong as president.

The responses varied, with many highlighting his outspoken and controversial nature, as well as his association with the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Others, however, offered their support for the aspirant, declaring him a formidable candidate for the presidency.

Adding his voice to the conversation, Wanlov the Kubolor shared some of his reasons for not supporting Kennedy Agyapong. In his post on Twitter replying to GhanaWeb’s post, he cited some actions he believed the aspirant was responsible for as his reasons.

Wanlov’s post read, “said to kill Ewes / said Ghanaians from the north cannot lead the country / put a target on a journalist that got him murdered/behaves idiotic & petty / tribalist / threatened judges / will be as bad as Akufu Addo if not worse.”

His reasons raised a further discussion on the matter, with some users agreeing with Wanlov’s claims and others, questioning the legitimacy of such claims.

We sought to verify the truth in the claims Kubolor made and if they were indeed genuine or just personal opinions.

  1. Said to kill Ewes:

In 2012, Kennedy Agyapong was reported to have made inflammatory remarks, suggesting violence against Voltarians in the Ashanti Region during an interview with Oman FM.

He is quoted to have said: “Today I declare war on this country, Gbevlo-Lartey and his people, IGP should know this. Voltarians in the Ashanti Region will not be spared. If anyone touches you, butcher him with a cutlass…”

However, the MP has indicated that he meant no harm with this statement. In June 2023, he clarified that the comment was in defence of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters in the Volta Region who were allegedly being molested by some supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and not to incite hate against Ewes as purported.

  1. Said Ghanaians from the north cannot lead the country:

There is no reported instance of him making such a statement.

  1. Put a target on a journalist that got him murdered:

Kennedy Agyapong publicly disclosed the identity of journalist Ahmed Suale, an investigative journalist with Tiger Eye PI, in 2018. Tragically, Suale was assassinated by unknown gunmen in January 2019.

  1. Behaves idiotic & petty:

This is a personal opinion expressed by Wanlov the Kubolor and may not be a widely accepted critique.

  1. Tribalist:

While there are allegations of tribalistic statements against Kennedy Agyapong, these remain claims and have not been definitively proven.

  1. Threatened judges:

In 2020, Kennedy Agyapong faced legal action when he publicly threatened a High Court judge during a live TV discussion on NET 2 TV. An apology was subsequently issued.

  1. Will be as bad as Akuffo Addo if not worse:
Also just a personal opinion/prediction and not to be taken as a fact.

Wanlov the Kubolor Claims Walking Barefoot Enhances His Sexual Stamina

Ghanaian musician, Wanlov the Kubolor, has recently made a surprising revelation about the benefits of walking barefoot. According to him, this practice has not only had a spiritual impact on his life but has also contributed to his sexual endurance.

Wanlov, known for his free-spirited nature and thought-provoking statements, shared that going barefoot has heightened his sensitivity to people’s curses. He firmly believes that these curses have no effect on him, thanks to his newfound awareness.

However, it is in the realm of sexual encounters where Wanlov claims to reap the most benefits from his barefoot lifestyle. He attributes the duration of his first round of sexual activity as a crucial factor in his ability to withstand curses.

While he admitted that he isn’t particularly fond of extended sexual sessions, Wanlov emphasized the significance of a prolonged initial round. He revealed that his first round can last anywhere from 15 minutes to an astonishing one hour, which has become his secret to endurance.

“I’m not a fan of extended sessions, but when it comes to the first round, I can go for a considerable amount of time,” Wanlov explained. “It can last anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour.”

The musician further showcased his ability to control and extend the duration of his initial round, expressing satisfaction in being able to tailor it to his desires. Once he completes the first round, he can then move on to subsequent rounds and finally find rest.

Wanlov the Kubolor’s unconventional approach to sexual encounters and his belief in the connection between walking barefoot and his sexual stamina have sparked intrigue and raised eyebrows. As a unique and outspoken personality in the entertainment industry, Wanlov continues to captivate attention with his distinctive style and captivating statements.

It is important to note that while individuals may find certain practices beneficial to their sexual experiences, it is essential to prioritize open communication, consent, and respect in any intimate relationship. Sexual health and satisfaction can vary greatly between individuals, and what works for one person may not work for another.

Wang Yi: China to work with Arab states to push Palestinian question back to right track of ‘two-state solution’

0

China is willing to work with Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries to continue to support Palestine’s just cause of restoring national rights and push the Palestinian question back to the right track of the “two-state solution” to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting solution, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Saturday.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks when talking with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud over the phone.

China opposes and condemns all acts that harm civilians as they violate basic human conscience and basic norms of international law, Wang noted.

Israel’s actions have gone beyond the scope of self-defense, Wang said, urging the country to listen to the calls of the international community and the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General to stop punishing the people of Gaza.

Wang called on all parties to avoid any acts to escalate the tension and return to negotiation as soon as possible. “China is communicating intensively with all parties to promote a ceasefire,” he said.

Noting that the pressing priority is to make every effort to ensure the safety of civilians, Wang urged efforts to open humanitarian relief channels at an early date, and safeguard the basic needs of the people of Gaza.

“All peace-loving countries should stand up for justice and urge the implementation of the ‘two-state solution’ as soon as possible,” he said.

Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, for his part, expressed his deep concerns over the current situation, condemning all acts that harm civilians and opposing Israel’s forcible relocation of Gaza residents outside the region.

Stressing the need to deliver humanitarian supplies to the people of Gaza as soon as possible, he called on the international community to work together to avoid the conflict from expanding to other countries.

The Saudi side believes that if relevant UN Security Council resolutions are not implemented, the Palestinian question cannot be resolved in a just and lasting manner, he said.

Hailing China’s important role in promoting world peace and stability, the Saudi foreign minister vowed to work with China to push all parties to abide by international humanitarian law, protect civilians from harm, and implement relevant Security Council resolutions on the Palestinian question.

WANEP-Ghana gives 6 key recommendations to curb recurring Bawku clashes

0

Concerns have been expressed by the West African Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP-Ghana) on the ongoing disturbances in Bawku and its impact on local and national security.

WANEP-Ghana says, although authorities are making attempts to resolve the situation in Bawku, the new killings in the area necessitate even more intense interventions.

It added that the continued fighting in Bawku may have additional ramifications on peace and security as extremists and terrorists may be able to enter Ghana through Bawku if there is persistent violence, miscommunication, distrust, and lack of cooperation between the security, the factions, and the people.

“Catalysing this could be the availability of small arms in the afflicted areas made possible by the sustained violence in the conflict which can exacerbate the violence and increase the risk of armed (also criminal) attacks, making it difficult to achieve stability and peace in Bawku and across the border with Burkina Faso.”

“This is plausible because under such a circumstance, and with the influx of displaced persons from Burkina Faso, in-country and cross-border ethnic mobilizations for violence can occur.”

This was contained in a WANEP-Ghana news situation tracking report to euate the possible risks of the disturbances being recorded in Bawku.

The Network claims that the skirmishes may lead to extreme cross-border violence between Burkina Faso and Ghana’s northern borders.

Not only that, but additional effects also include migration, strain on infrastructure and social services, agriculture, and other socioeconomic repercussions.

Bawku has recorded substantial instances of violence, and clashes between residents and the security deployed to the town in recent weeks.

The town has been unstable for decades now following chieftaincy disputes between the Mamprusis and Kusasis leading to the loss of lives and the destruction of properties.

The military was recently accused of killing ten residents which prompted 25 divisional chiefs in the area to petition the overlord of Bawku and the government.

To this end, WANEP-Ghana in its report made the following six recommendations:

1. First, WANEP-Ghana appeals to the people of Bawku, especially people involved in the sporadic gun violence and acts synonymous with criminality, and their accomplices, to re-think the negative impacts of their actions on the ordinary people of Bawku and on themselves and cease the violence. Similarly, we call on the leadership of the Bawku conflict to further assess the varied generational effect of this recurrent gun violence and discourage their members, particularly the youth from being deceived by anyone to engage in violence.

2. The Upper East Regional Security Council (UERSEC), the Bawku Municipal Security Council (MUSEC), and the National and Regional Peace Councils as well as the specific security deployments should intensify the collaboration among them and engage with all relevant traditional and religious representatives, ethnic leaders, youth, women groups and other critical stakeholders of the conflict in discussions to determine pathways towards de-escalating the tensions and sustaining stability in Bawku. Those pathways should include sustained alternative dispute and reconciliatory processes.

3.The REGSEC and MUSEC should increase the presence of security especially to unmanned border routes and communities to prevent any security infiltration, curtail gunfires, and protect lives and properties.

4. WANEP Ghana calls for a joint team comprising the National Peace Council (NPC), the National Chief Imam or his office and the National House of Chiefs to embark on some days’ working visit to the factions to persuade the factions to mitigate the violence and explore lawful avenues that are still available to them to addressing their grievances. In this approach, WANEP believes that the Nayiri, the Overlord of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, has an important role to play in resolving the impasse and the Chief Imam should prevail on him to sustain his peaceful influence on the conflict. WANEP Ghana and other notable civil society peacebuilding organisations are available to provide the much-needed technical and other forms of assistance in that regard.

5. WANEP-Ghana strongly advises that any support to Bawku especially by shadow, and third parties, should be towards influencing peaceful processes and bringing life back to Bawku but not for political gains that intermittently make Bawku a ghost town.

6. Lastly, WANEP-Ghana calls on the Kusasis to return to the Bawku Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee (BIEPC) because the BIEPC remains one concrete local cohesion-building structure for peace efforts in the area.

WANEP launches Silver Jubilee Celebration

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, Feb 19, GNA – The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), a leading regional peacebuilding civil society organisation, has launched its 25th anniversary celebration, on the theme: “25 Years of Building Peace and Inspiring Change.”

Mrs Levinia Addae-Mensah, the Programme Director and Deputy Executive Director of WANEP speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Accra at the launch of the Silver Jubilee Celebration, said the theme reflects the story and the successful journey of WANEP.

Founded in 1998 in response to civil wars that plagued West Africa in the 1990s, WANEP’s vision is that of a “West Africa region characterized by just and peaceful communities where the dignity of the human person is paramount and where the people can meet their basic human needs and decide their own direction.”

The Deputy Executive Director paid tribute to the two co-founding fathers of WANEP – Dr Sam G. Doe from Liberia, the first Executive Director and Co-founder of WANEP and Mr Emmanuel H. Bombande of Ghana, the second Executive Director and Co-founder of WANEP.

She said over the years, WANEP had succeeded in establishing strong national networks in every Member State of ECOWAS with over 700 member organisations across West Africa.

She said WANEP places special focus on collaborative approaches to conflict prevention, and peacebuilding, working with diverse actors from civil society, governments, intergovernmental bodies, women groups, the youth, and other partners in a bid to establish a platform for dialogue, experience sharing and learning, thereby complementing efforts at ensuring sustainable peace and development in West Africa and beyond.

Touching on the successes chalked by WANEP over the past 25 years, Mrs Addae-Mensah said WANEP started as a small civil society organisation in Ghana to an organisation that is now represented in 15 countries in West Africa; with an office in Abuja, Nigeria the level of ECOWAS, and also in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, at the level of the African Union (AU).

She said they have gotten to the point where WANEP had also acquired its own properties not just in Ghana but in countries such as la Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Benin and The Gambia.

She added that the WANEP had been able to survive the very mutating context of peace and security; from when it started focusing on intra-state conflicts, physical violent conflicts in the West Africa sub-region at the time, to addressing securities threats that were not necessarily physical conflicts.

Mrs Addae-Mensah said: “What we call the contemporary and emerging characters around conflicts, which are difficult to address and yet WANEP has been able as an Institution to transform itself and continue to sustain itself and remain relevant even in the face of different natures of conflicts from what we started with.

“I think that in itself is a huge inspiration and again it goes back to the theme of why we have talked about inspiring change because it has been a constantly changing context and yet within that context, we’ve been able to remain relevant and be able to also produce results.”

She lauded some of their development partners such as the European Union and the USAID for the continued support for WANEP over the years.

WANEP laments Ghana’s drop on Global Peace Index

0

The West African Network for Peace Building (WANEP) is attributing Ghana’s drop in the latest Global Peace Index to recent chieftaincy conflicts in the country.

Ghana lost its position as the most peaceful country in West Africa to Sierra Leone and also slipped as the second most peaceful country in Africa to 4th position.

Executive Director for WANEP, Chuku Emeka Eze says government must adapt strategies to reclaim the first position.

“Issues around press freedom, issues around communal clashes, and most importantly, the surroundings of Ghana by countries in turmoil are all factors for the ranking. The crime rate in urban centres is also a key indicator used in determining the global peace index.”

While commenting on the latest Global Peace Index, the Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Peace Council (NPC) Rev Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi said the development calls for more work as the decline was not too good for Ghana.

Rev Dr. Adu-Gyamfi attributed the decline to some of the happenings in Ghana such as armed robbery incidents, highway robberies as well as some attacks on journalists, political violence, and the land guard menace and other perceptions, which all goes to inform the rating and compilation of the results.

He said as a country there was the need to do the best we can to avoid some of these happenings.

He stressed the need to enhance trust and confidence between the security agencies and the civilian population to prevent extremism in Ghana and to improve understanding and tolerance as the country prepared itself for the 2024 general elections.

One of the three Ghanaian cars involved in Wanderlust’s 30,000 km global expedition narrowly escaped an accident after being crossed by a careless driver in South Africa.

In a video shared on the group’s Facebook page, a truck driving ahead of Wanderlust’s Toyota Tacoma, while overtaking another car, failed to check the side mirror for the Tacoma, which was also attempting to overtake the truck.

The split-second incident saw the brave Ghanaian driver veering off the road to save the situation.

Intending to travel through 30 countries by road, the three-month journey commenced in Accra in September and has completed the first leg of the trip.

The group has already traveled through 15 countries and is still on course to arrive in Dubai, where the expedition will conclude with some fun activities.

In July this year, Wanderlust completed a 10,000 km journey by land from Ghana to London.

With the aim of putting Ghana on the global scene, Wanderlust, working with the Ghana Tourism Authority, continues to sell Ghana as a travel destination throughout its journey.

The Wanderlust Ghana team, alongside a delegation of Ghanaians led by G10 companies, embarked on a tour of the Red Sand Desert in Dubai on October 9, 2024.

The team, known for their daring journeys, brought their Ghana-registered Tacoma vehicle to promote Ghanaian culture and tourism throughout their expedition.

However, during the adventure, the Tacoma encountered an unexpected setback when it got stuck in the desert, with one of its tires busted in the challenging terrain.

In an interview with blogger and journalist Andre Mustapha also known as Attractive Mustapha, who is currently traveling with the Wanderlust Ghana team, they described the situation as a “minor problem.”

They emphasized that these obstacles are all part of their mission to drive through 33 countries and showcase Ghana’s resilience and culture.

While the desert is typically navigated using Land Cruisers due to their proven performance in harsh environments, Wanderlust Ghana opted to use their own vehicles to highlight the unique Ghanaian spirit.

After the incident, the team was transported in a Land Cruiser to continue the journey, leaving the Ghanaian-registered Tacoma temporarily in the desert.

The adventure follows an all-white yacht cruise hosted by Wanderlust Ghana and G10 Travel Companies at the Dubai Harbour on October 8, 2024.

The event brought together Ghanaians from across the globe to celebrate Ghanaian culture and promote tourism.

The yacht party is part of Wanderlust Ghana’s 30,000-kilometer journey across 33 countries, which aims to inspire Ghanaians worldwide to explore the world while showcasing the beauty of their home country.

Looking ahead, the next major stop for Wanderlust Ghana will be South Africa, where the team will collaborate with the Ghana Tourism Authority to launch the “December in GH” initiative, promoting tourism and cultural exchange.

Despite the challenges faced along the way, Wanderlust Ghana continues to embody the adventurous spirit of Ghana, making strides in connecting Ghanaians and promoting the country on a global stage.

Wanderlust Ghana suspends its 30,000 km overland trip from Accra to Cape Town over alleged vehicle theft

0

Wanderlust Ghana, the team travelling from Accra through Paris to Dubai to Cape Town on road has currently suspended their trip after two of their vehicles were reported stolen.

The team had already completed an impressive 28,811 kilometers and were in Ngassi, Congo when Congolese officials reported two of their vehicles as stolen cars after running checks on their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

The two vehicles in contention are a 2016 Lexus RX 350 and a 2018 Toyota Tacoma which were bought in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

Providing update on their trip in a Facebook post on Thursday, November 28, one of the Wanderlust Ghana team member, Kwabena Peprah explained that they had conducted due diligence, including Carfax verifications which proved the cars were clean at the time before purchasing from dealers in Accra.

“In buying our current Tacoma in 2022, we first of all ran a carfax search on it and then went to customs to confirm duty payment. Both were successful and so we knew the car was safe to buy and we’ve had it for two years now.

“Saka bought his Raptor from a friend of his and he also went through the same process before taking possession.

“Franklin bought his Lexus from a car dealer in 2021 who had been given the car to sell by a bank. The bank had called in the collateral on an NPL and had to liquidate. It was already registered.

“Back at Ngassi, we completed all our paperwork and went to the police to exit. They run our VINs and announced to us that the Tacoma and Lexus were both reported as stolen in Canada. Imagine our shock.

“Within a matter of 30 minutes we’d been dispossessed of our passports and cars and we were being charged with vehicle theft,” he wrote on Facebook.

According to Kwabena Peprah, INTERPOL report says the TACOMA was reported stolen on 1st April 2022 while carfax verifies that a new owner was registered in the Canadian system on May 5, 2022.

He continued that the bill of lading covering the car, says the TACOMA was shipped out of Canada on May 7, 2022.

And GRA documents says the car was cleared on May 24, 2022.

“We saw it (TACOMA) on July 17th 2022. We performed the carfax search on July 18th 2022 and transferred the funds into the vendor’s account on same day.

“Then, according to this same Interpol, the theft was recorded in their system on February 13, 2024. With the Lexus, it was reported stolen on 8th October 2019. It was brought to Ghana and sold to someone,” he added.

The team has since handed over the vehicles to security officials in the Republic of the Congo, and investigations are underway in collaboration with authorities in Ghana and Canada.

A third vehicle, a Ford F150 Raptor, has been shipped back to Ghana from Pointe-Noir. Wanderlust Ghana has pledged full cooperation with investigations and plans to take legal action against the sellers.

“Tomorrow (Friday) morning, we will be at the police station to commence criminal proceedings against our vendors while utilizing other civil proceedings to recover our funds,” Kwabena said.

Wanderlust Ghana said it will notify all its brand partners for the expedition about the situation.

The team is willing to acquire new vehicles to complete its expedition.

“We are currently looking to purchase a new fleet of three cars to complete the current expedition and use them for planned future ones as well. If any vehicle distributor is interested in partnering with us, our doors are open,” Kwabena stated.

Wanda Nara calls police to evict Mauro Icardi from her Argentine home after model reports Galatasaray striker & estranged husband for allegedly threatening her

0

WHAT HAPPENED?

Galatasaray striker Icardi is back in his homeland for surgery on the knee ligament injury that he recently suffered in a Europa League clash with Tottenham, with that problem set to end his season. He is said to have initially moved into a Buenos Aires-based apartment that Nara uses when in Argentina.

THE GOSSIP

Icardi then transferred to a gated residence in Nordelta which is owned by Nara – who is now dating Argentine singer Elian Valenzuela, better known by his artist name L-Gante. The footballer is said to have been given a deadline of November 25 by which to move out of that property, with his refusal to do so – alongside supposed taunts on social media – leading to an argument that escalated to the point that local police were called.

WHAT WANDA NARA SAID

Ex-Inter and Paris Saint-Germain forward Icardi has reportedly been served with a restraining order, forcing him to stay away from Nara, with the Daily Mail quoting the model, television presenter and agent as saying: “I lent him my house from the heart as I would do with anyone, as I do with my ex Maxi Lopez every time he comes to Argentina. I offered him my house and lent it to him. The loan was until November 25, after that I needed it for personal reasons.”

DID YOU KNOW?

Icardi Galatasaray

Lara Piro, a lawyer representing Icardi, has responded by saying: “This is all part of a false accusation of non-existent threats, for which Wanda Nara will have to answer before the courts. It is shameful, immoral and unfair to harass a father of a family over a property issue on the eve of surgery. To do this to the father of her daughters, to the man who raised and supported her other three children, speaks volumes about the person that Mrs Nara is.”

WHAT NEXT?

Nara is said to have alleged that Icardi could have weapons on the property, although a search of the house – which began at 3:30am local time – found nothing. Icardi – who married Nara in May 2015 but saw the couple take in several separations before splitting for good in the summer of 2024 – has moved into a friend’s house ahead of undergoing a knee operation on Tuesday.

Wanchiki residents appeal to Interior Minister to lift curfew

0

The Chief and residents of Wanchiki in the Chereponi district of the North East Region are urging the Interior Minister to lift the curfew currently in place in their area, citing that peace has been fully restored.

The curfew, imposed after a communal dispute earlier this year, is now disrupting daily life and harming local businesses.

A peace durbar held in August, led by the Paramount Chief, promoted forgiveness, peace, and unity, and residents affirmed their commitment to maintaining peace.

However, the Interior Ministry renewed the curfew, sparking disappointment and frustration among local leaders and residents.

The Paramount Chief of Wanchiki appealed to the Interior Ministry to consider lifting the curfew, highlighting its negative impact on lives and businesses.

Residents also expressed their discontent, describing the serious consequences of the ongoing power outage in the district, which has lasted nearly three weeks.

The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) is working to restore power, but the exact cause of the issue remains unknown.

The residents of Wanchiki are calling for swift action to lift the curfew and restore electricity, emphasizing their desire to return to normal life and rebuild their community.

WAMI Predicts Increase In West Africa GDP

0

Dr. Olorunsola Olowofeso

The ECOWAS economy is predicted to grow from $777 billion to about $900 billion after the full completion of the West African Capital Market Integration (WACMI).

Director General of the West African Monetary Institute (WAMI), Dr. Olorunsola Olowofeso, announced this at a capacity-building session for financial market operatives.

He said the integration which is an initiative by the Institute is to establish an open platform  for  the  listing,  trading  and  settlement  of  capital  markets  securities as well as transactions for West African countries.

Dr. Olowofeso explained that a fully integrated capital market will improve liquidity access, strengthen economies, and ease capital access to businesses in the West African economic block.

“By the time we integrate the capital market, it will increase the GDP of West Africa from $777 billion to over $800 billion to $900 billion and that would be a plus to Africa in terms of job, liquidity and infrastructure development“

He furthered that the institute is working to assist other member countries to build a robust capital market infrastructure in Gambia, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone to ensure the smooth running of the programme.

On whether an open capital market platform in the West African Economic block will derail the growth of Ghana’s securities market, the Director General of the Securities and Exchanges Commission, Rev Daniel Ogbarmey Tetteh said the integration would rather deepen and enhance Ghana’s capital market and create healthy competition.

“So within the contest of an integrated market, it means that we will be exposing the benefits of the Ghana market to other practitioners. So I think that we shouldn’t be worried about the integration, rather it will open up to better opportunities which will make us competitive”.

He added that the Securities and Exchanges Commission is embarking on a capital market master plan which will tie into the West African initiative to strengthen the local market.

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Stock Exchange Abena Amoah, also stated that the move will offer improved diversification of funds which could reduce risk.

“It will enable fund managers to structure a fund which will enable you to diversify portfolios in different markets. This improves diversification and concentrated risk management tools.”

Wamfie District Court jails two farmers for 44 months

0

A District Court at Wamfie in Dormaa East of the Bono Region has sentenced two farmers, Stephen Opoku and Samuel Owusu to 24 months and 20 months respectively, for threat of death and unlawful assault.

They both pleaded guilty and while Opoku, the first convict aged 28, was charged with threat of death, unlawful assault and causing harm to one Benedict Agyekum, 28-year-old Owusu, the second convict had been charged with threat of death and causing harm.

The Court convicted and sentenced Opoku to eight months for each charge to run consecutively whereas Owusu was also convicted and sentenced to 10 months for each of his two charges, but a third accused by name Enoch was still at large.

Police Inspector (P/Insp.) Emmanuel Asare, the prosecutor, told the Court presided over by (name withheld on magistrate’s order) that the complainant and convicts as, well as the third accused were all natives and residents of Danyame, a farming community near Dormaa-Ahenkro, but the convicts were local farmers.

He said during the Christmas festivities a football match was organised at the village, but a misunderstanding ensued between a witness in this case and a spectator after the match, which was resolved.

P/Insp. Asare said about 2230 hours later, the first convict accompanied by the second convict went to the over-the-counter medicine shop of the complainant and threatened him with a locally manufactured pistol.

The prosecutor added that at about 2230 hours on Sunday, December 31, 2023, while the complainant and other witnesses were preparing to go to the 31st watch night service, the first convict armed with the same locally manufactured pistol came and stood in front of the complainant’s house and dared anybody to come out.

P/Insp. Asare said the complainant and co-tenants were so frightened and therefore locked themselves in their rooms, but the prosecutor added that while the first convict was issuing threats, he was suddenly hit by an object from the darkness which rendered him incapacitated.

The prosecutor said the third accused who was close to the scene quickly came and took the locally- manufactured pistol away but the first accused was assisted by the second accused and a fire service personnel to seek medical treatment.

P/Inspt. Asare said on Tuesday, January 01, 2024, the first convict saw the complainant during a musical concert in the village and pounced on him after alerting the second convict who prevented anyone from rescuing the complainant, adding that the third accused also held the complainant’s hands while the first accused was assaulting him.

He explained that in the process, the first convict pulled a knife concealed on him and stabbed the complainant at the occiput (lower back side of the skull).

The complainant, therefore, reported the incident to the Police at Nsesreso a nearby community and both convicts were arrested and handed over to the Dormaa-Ahenkro Police for further investigation, P/Inspt Asare said.

He said the convicts admitted to the offences during interrogation and were consequently charged and brought before the Court while the Police still made efforts to apprehend a third accused person.

WAMCO Praises COCOBOD For Support

0

Ambassador Daniel Krull (L) being briefed about the operations of the factory

The West African Mills Company Limited (WAMCO), a cocoa processing company in Takoradi has commended Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) for its immense support that has ensured the revival of the first cocoa processing factory in Ghana.

WAMCO, which used to have the state of the art machinery and equipment to turn cocoa beans into various semi-finished products for export, was shut down between 2014 and 2017.

The cocoa processing company could not get cocoa beans to process, coupled with other operational challenges, caused the shutdown of the company.

However, prior to assumption of office, the current government promised to revive the defunct company when voted into power.

The government of Ghana represented by COCOBOD has 40 per cent share in WAMCO with the remaining 60 per cent majority shares coming Hosta International AG, German investors under a Joint Venture arrangement.

Therefore upon assumption of office, COCOBOD ensured that WAMCO was supplied with the needed cocoa beans to commence production and ensure that the company, which was a hub of employment to many in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, worked again.

This came to light when the German Ambassador to Ghana, Daniel Krull visited the factory to familiarize himself with the operations of the company and engaged management and staff of the company.

The company, which has been granted a Ghana Free Zones Authority status, comprises two factories, namely; WAMCO 1 and WAMCO 2 with three (3) processing Plants, Expeller, Liquor and Hydraulic Presses Plants.

The ambassador was taken round the factory and briefed about the different technologies applied in producing semi-finished products, which are exported and later used as raw materials in chocolate confectionary worldwide.

Managing Director of WAMCO, Frank Bednar, also praised the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah who doubles as the MP for Takoradi for the significant role he played in the reactivation of the company.

“We are grateful to the government of Ghana and COCOBOD for bringing the business of WAMCO back to life”, he stressed.

He said that both shareholder groups agreed on a roadmap to revamp the two factories starting with WAMCO 1. WAMCO 1 is now operational whilst WAMCO 2 needs a major rehabilitation to make it functional again.

He revealed that the company is currently operating with a workforce of 150 and has the potential to increase the number to 250 or more if WAMCO 2 becomes operational.

It is estimated that, the company will require about $5 million additional capital to modernize WAMCO 1 and fully revive WAMCO 2.

He stated that the company has shipped cocoa products such as Natural Cocoa Liquor, Deodorized Cocoa Butter and Expeller Cake to its traditional markets in Europe, but has now expanded its market to Asia, the Middle East and North Africa.

He said WAMCO is earning foreign exchange for the country through value addition and promoting products “made in Ghana” on the international markets. He therefore appealed to COCOBOD to ensure continuous supply of cocoa beans to sustain production and growth.

The Managing Director stressed the need to invest into environmentally friendly power generation to reduce energy costs, to protect the global climate and to support Ghana meeting its national carbon dioxide emission targets.

The German Ambassador, Daniel Krull who was enthused about the revival of the company recalled how WAMCO was once the heartbeat of economic activities in the Region in particular, adding, “I believe resuscitating all two companies was pivotal to the economic future of the region and the country as a whole”.

He said the German Government was happy about the bilateral relationship between Ghana and Germany. He stated that there are various instruments and funds dedicated for energy and climate issues which could be of great support should the company decide to change its energy mix.

Ambassador Krull encouraged WAMCO to show also interest in Research and Development (R&D) and pledged to facilitate an exchange program between the company and similar establishments in Germany as well as other areas of cooperation in the fields of science and technology.

WAMCo Boss Encourages SMEs –

0

The Managing Director of the West Africa Mills Company (WAMCo), Frank Bednar, has encouraged Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as well as young business professionals to make regulatory compliance and safety issues utmost in their production line.

The CEO of the Takoradi-based cocoa processing company also indicated that in order to be ahead of their competitors and become a reference point in their chosen businesses, SMEs should ensure their products are always of high quality.

The MD of WAMCo stated this when he hosted 22 SMEs under the SNV, Netherland Development Organization, Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and  Duapa Werkspace, a business incubation center, who were on a tour dubbed ‘B2B Tour’.

The young professionals were at the factory to learn the operations of WAMCo and how they could explore areas of collaboration for growth.

Mr. Bednar took the participants through the technology and modification of tools in the factory to meet current socioeconomic trends in business.

He said, “we want to drive these changes in line with renewable energy solutions to save cost, increase employment levels and expand market shares as we await our certification into the African Continental Free Trade Area Programme (AfCFTA)”.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Duapa Werkspace, Erasmus Ackon, said the trip was to showcase excellence in business practices from other industries in the Region for the young business owners to learn from.

He said, “We have really learnt a lot by observation during the tour of your facility and how standards and quality measures are top-notch and we promise to incorporate bits and pieces into all activities to improve business performance”.

The AGI Western Regional Manager, Albert Ababio, described the tour as an eye opener for the SMEs.

The business, he mentioned had received support from the SNV Ghana and GIZ to retool aside collaboration with regulatory authorities for the necessary certification and standards.

Wamalwa Declares Azimio Parties Must Separate from ODM Over Raila’s Alignment with Kenya Kwanza

0

Eugene Wamalwa has declared that the constituent parties of Azimio la Umoja can no longer collaborate with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) led by Raila Odinga.

Wamalwa, who leads the DAP-Kenya party, claims that Raila and his team have chosen to align with the ruling party, which makes their role in the opposition untenable.

Wamalwa asserts that Raila has allied himself with the ruling party and is no longer part of the coalition that previously united them against the current regime.

“In marriage, there is a concept called irreconcilable differences, which is a ground for divorce. When a marriage breaks down irretrievably and compatibility is lost, the couple goes their separate ways. ODM wants to save Zakayo, while we (others in Azimio) want to save Kenya. We cannot stay together,” Wamalwa stated during a church service in Makongeni, Thika town.

He further explained that ODM has integrated into the Kenya Kwanza administration and cannot detach itself from the new political alliance, especially since some of its members have been appointed as Cabinet Secretaries.

“Team Okoa Zakayo (ODM), we wish you well with that government. You have shared ministries, and now I hear you want to share PS positions as well. You are also looking to divide state corporations. But we will stand firm and resolute with the people of Kenya,” he added.

Wamalwa also expressed frustration with Azimio leaders who claim that everything is fine despite evident issues. He noted that leaders are no longer in agreement.

“We must tell Kenyans the truth. Within Azimio, all is not well. Martha Karua has left for Narc Kenya, and Peter Munya wants to leave PNU. This is because we say Zakayo must go, but some of our colleagues are insisting that Zakayo must stay,” he said.

Walter Mazzarri replaces Rudi Garcia as new Napoli head coach

0

Walter Mazzarri secured Watford’s survival in the Premier League in the 2016-17 season during his time as manager of the club

Napoli have sacked head coach Rudi Garcia after 16 games and have replaced him with former manager Walter Mazzarri until the end of the season.

Frenchman Garcia, 59, was appointed by the Serie A champions in June but departs with the club 10 points behind league leaders Inter Milan.

Mazzarri spent one season in the Premier League at Watford in 2016-17 before his contract was terminated.

The 62-year-old Italian previously managed Napoli from 2009 to 2013.

Mazzarri delivered the club its first trophy in 20 years when Napoli won the 2012 Copa Italia by beating undefeated league champions Juventus in the final.

A year later, he led them to second in Serie A – the club’s highest league position in over two decades – and secured a Champions League place.

Garcia was named Napoli boss in the summer after Luciano Spalletti left the club to take time out of the game last season after delivering the club their first league title for 33 years.

Napoli are currently fourth in table and were beaten by 17th-placed Empoli on Sunday to leave Garcia with a record of eight wins, four draws and four defeats.

Walsh ‘feeling fresh’ before latest round of Women’s Nations League games –

0

Keira Walsh says she is “feeling fresh” as she targets a fourth consecutive summer of international football.

Barcelona midfielder Walsh played for Great Britain at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, and then for England when they won Euro 2022 before finishing as runners-up at this summer’s Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The latter tournament saw the 26-year-old miss a game due to a knee injury and a subsequent calf problem saw her sit out the Lionesses’ two September matches in the Women’s Nations League — a competition through which England can secure qualification for GB for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Walsh said: “After so many tournaments, and somebody actually sent me a thing the other day that I’d played the second-most games in Europe, I think naturally that’s going to take a toll on your body. I think obviously that’s potentially a factor of why I got injured at the start of the season.

“But I did my rehab, the club and England have looked after me, we’ve had a camp since then and a lot of games in between.

“I’m feeling good, I’m feeling fresh and I think that was my little break for me to now go again and push on this season.”

Barcelona midfielder Keira Walsh is hoping for a successful season for club and country

Walsh says another tournament next summer is something she is “definitely” up for, adding: “Honestly, the thought of pre-season is worse!

“I’d rather go to a tournament. It’s special. People talk about the winning but just the feeling of being part of a team for so long and you spend every day with each other — I think then when you go home and you’re not with 50 people is also a bit weird. Even off the pitch it’s a special feeling to be part of a group at a tournament.”

England need to finish first in Group A1 to have a chance of obtaining the Olympic qualification and head into their final two pool matches in danger of falling short of top spot.

Sarina Wiegman’s side are currently third, three points behind the Netherlands, 2-1 victors against them in September, and one behind Belgium, who last month — with Walsh back in the side — they beat 1-0, then were defeated by 3-2.

The Villans made early moves in the summer transfer window, selling midfielder Luiz to Juventus while bolstering their squad with some smart arrivals.

Maatsen ended up in the Netherlands’ squad and, while he didn’t get a minute of game time at Euro 2024, won’t feature on Wednesday. Copa America winner Emiliano Martinez will also be given a few weeks off with Jhon Duran, Ollie Watkins, Youri Tielemans, Ezri Konsa and John McGinn also absent after their international excursions.

Walsall vs Aston Villa score prediction

The sale of Luiz is undoubtedly a huge blow and the early stages of pre-season will show supporters how the side plan to move forward without the Brazilian midfielder.

However, they shouldn’t have too many issues breezing past a Walsall side that ended the 2023/24 campaign in League Two mid-table obscurity.

Walmart Lays off 2,000 Warehouse Workers |

0

Walmart is laying off more than 2,000 workers at five US warehouses that fulfill website orders, weeks after America’s largest private employer warned it’s in for a tough year ahead.

The retail giant is cutting more than 1,000 jobs in Texas, 600 jobs in Pennsylvania, 400 in Florida and 200 in New Jersey, according to Worker Adjustment Retraining Notification (WARN) filings. Reuters first reported last month that the job cuts were because of reductions and elimination in evening and weekend shifts.

Walmart said in a statement that it “recently adjusted staffing levels at our fulfillment centers in select markets to better prepare for the future needs of customers” and that it was a decision that wasn’t “made lightly.” It said that it’s “working closely with affected associates to help them understand what career options may be available at other Walmart locations.”

However, it’s unclear whether this is just the beginning or end of layoffs that have been affecting many large companies.

Wall Street Journal report on China is an attempt to discredit the Belt and Road Initiative

0

by Xinhua writers Zhao Bochao, Li Li

A recent report by The Wall Street Journal, targeting several China-built global mega-projects, was filled with distorted facts, one-sided stories, and unfounded accusations — an attempt to discredit the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative.

What’s the real picture of these projects? Are they really “falling apart” as sensationally claimed by the WSJ? Xinhua reporters traveled there, studied the cases and talked to authorities, experts and engineers.

Here is what we found.

Adriana Carranza, a resident in the San Luis village in northern Ecuador, has fond memories of her days working with a Chinese company at the Coca Codo Sinclair (CCS) hydroelectric project from 2012 to 2015.

“Thanks to the work I had done for (a subcontractor of) the Sinohydro Corporation, I was able to save money,” the former cook at the company told Xinhua. The job was well paid with good working conditions.

Carranza is among the thousands of Ecuadorians who have worked at the Chinese-constructed project, some 150 km east of the capital Quito. As the country’s biggest hydropower project, the 1,500-megawatt CCS has been running smoothly for over six years, generating around 42 billion kWh of clean and renewable hydroelectricity, becoming the largest power source for Ecuador.

However, a recent report by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), which also spoke to Carranza, painted a gloomy picture of the CCS project with distorted facts and unfounded accusations.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). With infrastructure construction a key priority, 81 Chinese central state-owned enterprises have been involved in over 3,400 projects in countries along the Belt and Road by January 2021. The cumulative amount of China’s direct investment in these nations reached 161.3 billion U.S. dollars from 2013 to 2021. A World Bank report estimated that when fully implemented, the BRI could help nearly 40 million people in relevant countries leave poverty behind.

Turning a blind eye to such achievements, the WSJ article dated Jan. 20 criticized several Chinese-built mega-projects in Latin America, Asia and Africa in an attempt to smear the China-proposed initiative.

Watch: Reinvestigation The Wall Street Journal report on China-built mega-projects is untrue and biased.

FALSEHOODS & MISREPRESENTATION

“The 14-hour days were long, and her Chinese boss didn’t speak Spanish,” wrote the WSJ about Carranza’s experience working for Sinohydro’s sub-contractor.

Contrary to what was described in the report, Carranza told Xinhua she was well paid for working extra hours. During her pregnancy, her boss and colleagues treated her “as if I was their daughter.”

“We usually want to work (extra hours)” and “I’m satisfied with my salary,” said Graciela Quirina, who also worked in a Sinohydro kitchen.

The WSJ’s misrepresentation went further. Citing unnamed government engineers, the U.S. daily alleged that the CCS plant has thousands of cracks in its “eight turbines” due to “faulty steel imported from China” and boldly speculated that it could soon “break down.”

In an interview with Xinhua, Miguel Calahorrano, Ecuador’s former Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, said the WSJ article lacks veracity and “has a political intention.”

“How can a plant that is of no use to us have come to produce almost 42,000 gigawatt hours of energy? I’m sure these people don’t even understand what 42,000 gigawatt hours of energy means,” the former minister said.

“It clearly has the political intention of trying to deue the relationship” between China and Latin American countries, he said.

Regarding the cracks, Sinohydro and the Ecuadorian State Electricity Company hired the German testing agency TUV SUD in 2018 as an international independent third party, which concluded in its risk assessment report that these cracks will not affect the operation and safety of the plant for its design life of 50 years.

As to the suitability of the steel, the TUV SUD report indicated that the base materials are within the ues required by the specifications.

Furthermore, the WSJ associated erosion along a section of the Coca River and the disappearance of a waterfall with the Chinese-built project to hype up its environmental consequences.

Ecuadorian government-commissioned research conducted by Swiss consulting company Lombardi concluded that the disappearance of the waterfall was a natural phenomenon and had nothing to do with the construction of the CCS — a view shared by many geologists, local media reports said.

Ecuador has never lodged the issue with Sinohydro, which was tasked with the construction, according to the Chinese company.

Calahorrano said that the CCS plant has managed for the first time in the country’s history, together with other hydropower plants, to raise hydroelectricity in the electrical matrix to more than 93 percent, reducing the use of fossil fuels, saving the country about 1.3 billion U.S. dollars a year from fossil fuel imports and cutting carbon dioxide by about 18 million tons a year.

ONE-SIDED STORY

Under the sensational headline “China’s Global Mega-Projects are Falling Apart,” the WSJ article went on to bring in Pakistan’s Neelum Jhelum hydroelectric project, and again blamed “flaws” in Chinese construction for its shutdown in July 2022.

The accusation is far from the truth. The quality of the Chinese construction, as euated by local authorities during its handover in 2018, was impeccable and up to standard.

Sajjad Ghani, chairman of the Pakistan Water & Power Development Authority, told Xinhua that the WSJ report is unjustifiable.

“The quality of construction of the Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project has been fair,” said Ghani.

There is no doubt that the China Gezhouba Group Co, the main contractor for the project’s civil work, “has done all these things successfully,” said Muhammad Irfan, CEO of the Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Company, which now operates the plant.

The root cause for the shutdown, Irfan told a parliament meeting in November, was pressure from a mountain on the underground tunnel, resulting in partial collapse and a blockage.

The problem emerged when Pakistan was ravaged by floods seen as the “worst in history,” while earthquakes were recorded in the surrounding areas of the plant. Irfan said Neelum Jhelum has signed a new contract with the Chinese constructor to repair the tunnel, with the civil work contract already completed.

In Uganda, another Chinese-constructed project — the Karuma hydropower plant — also came under harsh criticism from the WSJ, which blamed “cracked walls” for delays.

The Chinese constructor Sinohydro told Xinhua that the problem was discovered in 2016 but not substantial enough to compromise the stability of the structure, and has been dealt with properly to the satisfaction of all parties.

“In order to provide a standard power plant, we are always liaising with experts in all fields of the power plant construction to achieve high quality standard plant,” said Bless Ayebazibwe, head of the Ugandan technical team at Sinohydro, adding that they have worked with an architectural expert from Canada, manufacturers from all over the world who always visit the site when called upon, as well as local experts.

Local and international engineers who supervise the construction of the 600-megawatt plant along the River Nile said the project is being built to international standards, despite insurmountable challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and “rampant vandalism” which have impacted the project’s timeline, according to Sinohydro.

Vandalism has been a threat to Uganda’s electricity infrastructure. More than 300 tons of parts have been stolen from the Karuma plant and more than 50 km of conductors cut off and stolen, according to Sinohydro. Delays in compensating landowners affected land acquisitions, impacting the project’s timeline.

The Chinese company said it would overcome all these challenges and hand over a high-quality plant to Uganda.

The Isimba Hydro Power Plant in Uganda, built by China International Water & Electric Corporation, was also targeted. The company said the WSJ report was “misleading.”

There is “a lack of inquiring first-hand information” in the report, said Muhammad Idrees, a Pakistani civil engineer working at the project site.

“We can see that this is just to exaggerate the scenario whereas the project is running well, generating power, heading to the national grid,” he said, calling the project “a successful commission.”

Meanwhile, the WSJ reported that the Chinese side “failed to build a floating boom to protect the dam from water weeds and other debris, which has led to clogged turbines and power outages.” The company dismissed the accusation, given that the problem never occurred at Isimba.

“The WSJ report is pure slander,” it added.

Also in Africa, the vast Social Housing Project Kilamba Kiaxi, built by China’s CITIC Construction outside the capital of Luanda, Angola, was criticized by the WSJ for alleged poor construction quality.

However, Fan Juntao, general manager of the Chinese company’s Angolan division, told Xinhua that there is no construction problem, as the issues of cracked walls and humidity mentioned in the WSJ report are quite rare and result from some tenants’ improper renovations.

The substandard renovations have destroyed the original water and electricity pipelines, leading to water leakage in some houses, Fan said.

“The Kilamba Kiaxi (project) has been completed with good quality,” said Carlos Augusto, an Angolan engineer who is working on Phase II of the project, adding that the apartments are at full occupation and no major complaints have been lodged by the residents.

ENORMOUS BENEFITS

Overcoming power shortages is critical if Uganda is to grow its economy and industrialize. The 183-megawatt Isimba plant now accounts for roughly 14 percent of the East African country’s total installed capacity. The Karuma plant is expected to increase capacity by 40 percent upon completion.

Solomon Acaye is one of around 15,000 Ugandans employed by the Karuma project. He joined it as a mason but now leads a construction team.

“I came with only the skill of house construction, but as soon as I joined here, I’ve learned a lot — carpentry, steel fixing,” he told Xinhua, noting that his newly acquired skills would prove helpful once the project ends.

As part of the projects, roads were paved and widened, and schools and health service buildings were constructed. Hamis Muzinga, who lives near the Isimba project, noted that workshops are mushrooming in nearby towns, “basically set up by former workers of Isimba.”

Neighbouring communities near the Karuma plant are happy to have the large project in their area, said Ismail Bongomin, chairman of the Karuma Town Council. “Because this one is going to (benefit) generation after generation. It’s not just like a thing for today only,” he said.

With a total of 20,002 housing units and the support of municipal works, the Angolan Kilamba Kiaxi project has become home to around 120,000 residents in Luanda.

Costa Sebastiao, a Kilamba Kiaxi resident for seven years, said the condominium has changed his life in many ways.

The Chinese company has brought positive changes to the city, especially for young people, he said, adding “a good number of young people did not have homes, and with the construction of the project, they managed to get a house.”

From the China-Laos Railway that transformed the landlocked Laos into a land-linked hub to Kenya’s Mombasa-Nairobi Railway contributing more than 0.5 percent to the African nation’s economic growth, the Belt and Road Initiative has helped many developing nations embrace fast development.

But the initiative has fallen prey to a Western-led smear campaign. Denis Mwaba, lecturer in Civil Engineering at the University of Zambia, noted that U.S. media have been publishing “damaging” reports to “blacken the efforts of China.” The WSJ article is heavily biased and “not a proper articulation of the facts,” he said.

Mwaba said the ubiquitous success of the global infrastructure program has gained Africa’s favor.

Projects under the Initiative are meeting the continent’s needs, revolutionizing infrastructure and shifting the African development landscape, said Gideon Chitanga, associate researcher at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.

Belt and Road cooperation is also in full swing in Latin America. “China currently offers an alternative to traditional financing schemes, which has led to more prosperous and realistic development aid,” said Argentine economist Pablo Levinton, who believes there is a vast difference in how the Chinese invest compared to the West.

“Any Western investment is based on a simple calculation of expected profit that results from subtracting planned expenses from expected revenues,” he explained. “In China’s case, while that is the basis for any type of investment, it is not summed up as a mere profit margin, but rather as a ‘win-win’ concept.”

The best proof that the CCS plant works is the production of clean energy and its economic, social and environmental benefits for Ecuador, which have yet to be euated by those who criticize the project and try to disqualify it, said Calahorrano, the former Ecuadorian minister.

The hydroelectric plant has also bolstered the country’s energy sovereignty and sustainability, with Ecuador no longer depending on imported energy. On the contrary, it has become an energy exporter in significant quantities to Colombia and Peru.

Speaking with Xinhua, Nancy Chicaiza, a shopkeeper in San Luis who was also quoted in the WSJ report, said she missed the days when the Chinese company was present.

“I am grateful because Sinohydro has helped us a lot,” she said.

Wall Squats And Planks Best At Lowering Blood Pressure | Health

0

Strength-training exercises such as wall squats or holding the plank position are among the best ways to lower blood pressure, a study suggests.

Current guidance focusing mainly on walking, running and cycling should be updated, the UK researchers say.

Analysis, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, of trials involving 16,000 people found all exercise lowered high blood pressure.

But wall squats and planking led to larger falls than aerobic exercise.

These isometric exercises are designed to build strength without moving muscles or joints.

The plank position, which resembles a press-up, with elbows directly beneath shoulders, legs stretched out behind, strengthens the abdomen.

Isometric exercises place a very different stress on the body to aerobic exercise, says study author Dr Jamie O’Driscoll, from Canterbury Christ Church University.

“They increase the tension in the muscles when held for two minutes, then cause a sudden rush of blood when you relax,” he says.

“This increases the blood flow, but you must remember to breathe.”

High blood pressure puts strain on the blood vessels, heart and other organs, increasing the risk of conditions such as heart attacks and strokes.

And over-40s are advised to have it checked every five years.

Treatment often involves medication but patients are also advised to eat healthily, reduce alcohol intake, stop smoking and exercise regularly.

The pressure of blood in the arteries is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg).

Below 130/85mmHg is healthy while more than 140/90 mmHg is high, according to the study.

The higher number equates to pressure of blood in the arteries when the heart beats, known as systolic blood pressure.

The lower number is pressure between beats and known as diastolic blood pressure.

For their analysis, researchers from Canterbury Christ Church University and Leicester University looked at data from 15,827 people exercising for two weeks or more in 270 clinical trials published between 1990 and 2023.

They found resting blood pressure was reduced by:

-4.49/2.53mmHg after aerobic-exercise training (such as running or cycling)

-4.55/3.04mm Hg after dynamic resistance or weight training

-6.04/2.54mmHg after combined training (aerobic and weights)

-4.08/2.50mmHg after high-intensity interval training (short bursts of intense exercise with periods of rest in between)

-8.24/4mmHg after isometric-exercise training (planks and wall squats)

These are relatively small drops, Dr O’Driscoll says, but could lower someone’s risk of stroke.

Current UK guidelines say adults should do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise a week, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity, plus muscle-strengthening exercise twice a week.

In addition, Dr O’Driscoll says they should consider two minutes of wall squats, or holding the plank position four times with two minutes’ rest in between, three times a week.

Anyone concerned about their blood pressure is advised to ask their GP to check it.

American rapper Lauryn Hill will headline the upcoming Walker Town Concert, set for September 28-29, 2024, at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi.

Hill, the legendary lead singer of The Fugees, will share the stage with Kenyan rapper Nyashinski. Since 2022, the ‘To Whom It May Concern’ hitmaker has served as a brand ambassador for Johnnie Walker.

According to posters from The Walker Experience and ticket links on Ticketasa, British rapper ArrDee, Nigeria’s Rema and Kenya’s Bien of Sauti Sol will grace the stage as well.

Lauryn Hill previously visited Kenya to assess activities sponsored by her non-profit organization. In a Reuters interview during that visit, Hill stated, “We were chosen to say some things, and all the awards and stuff, the real meaningful things are when you come out to wherever, whether it be Nairobi or Brooklyn, and spread the message.”

Hill’s interest in Africa was sparked when a Fugees track appeared in the 1996 documentary When We Were Kings, which chronicles Muhammad Ali’s historic match with George Foreman in Zaire. She remarked, “American kids don’t have a true concept of what Africa is like; there are a lot of false and stereotypical images. We wanted to come to Africa to show the world what it was really like.”

Rising to fame in the 1990s as a member of The Fugees, Hill launched a critically acclaimed solo career. Her debut album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, won five Grammy Awards, solidifying her as a pioneering figure in hip-hop and R&B.

This year’s Walker Town Concert marks the second anniversary of this highly anticipated event, which has become a staple in Nairobi’s music calendar.

The concert consistently showcases top African and international artists, with past headliners like Tiwa Savage, Fally Ipupa, and TxC, gaining a reputation for dynamic performances and vibrant cultural experiences that attract thousands of music lovers each year.

The National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Commander Salam Mustapha, has stated that the only verdict from Jean Mensa after the elections will be the declaration of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the winner. According to him, this election represents a “win or win” situation; there is no loss in their dictionary.

Speaking at the maiden edition of the Walk for Bold Solutions in Accra this morning, Salam Mustapha asserted that this is the largest youth rally ever held in the country, challenging the NDC to organize a similar event if they have comparable support.

He urged the youth to prepare for victory by promoting the achievements of the current administration and Dr. Bawumia’s messages as they aim for success on December 7.

The walk, an initiative of the National Youth Wing, saw thousands of NPP supporters, led by national, regional, and constituency executives, march from Obra Spot through the Central Business District, culminating in a mini rally at James Town.

NPP National Chairman Stephen Ayensu Ntim reinforced this message, noting that the rally’s success showcases the party’s grassroots strength. He urged all party members to ensure they vote, warning that failing to do so would undermine their efforts.

Parliamentary candidates also encouraged youth and women to take an active role in the campaign, emphasizing the importance of collective action leading up to the December 7 elections.

Walk against galamsey hijacked by political elements

0

Archbishop Bonaventure Kwofie, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, has alleged that a planned environmental walk by the clergy has been hijacked by political elements.

According to him, the walk, which aims to raise awareness about illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, has been overtaken by political parties seeking electoral gains.

In a media interview, he remarked, “The Accra Archdiocese is organizing this environmental prayer walk against galamsey. It is being hijacked by some political elements, turning it into a Catholic Bishops’ Conference action, which we do not support. Additionally, we are not aligned with the organised labour strike.”

He further emphasized, “The galamsey issue is not a political matter but an environmental, social, community, industrial, and labour issue with wide-reaching effects. Approximately four million people are involved in galamsey, either directly or indirectly.”

The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, in collaboration with the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious, Ghana, and the Catholic Lay Faithful and Professionals, is set to lead an Environmental Prayer Protest Walk Against Galamsey on Friday, October 11, 2024.

A press statement issued by the church on Friday, October 4, explained that the protest seeks to raise awareness about the devastating impact of illegal mining in Ghana and call for urgent government intervention to end this menace.

The primary goal of the protest is to advocate for the declaration of a state of emergency on mining activities, particularly in areas surrounding water bodies, riverbanks, and forest reserves.

Walewale: Police confiscate 37 bags of cocoa beans suspected of being smuggled out of Ghana

0

Thirty-seven bags of cocoa beans found in a private residence at Walewale in the North East Region, and suspected to be meant for onward transportation to neighbouring countries have been confiscated by the Police.

The arrest follows an intelligence-led operation by the West Mamprusi Police Command.

The bags of cocoa beans are believed to have been transported from southern Ghana to the north ostensibly to be smuggled outside of Ghana as part of a syndicate that smuggles cocoa beans to neighbouring countries.

Acting on the tip-off, the police raided the private residence on Sunday, November 17, 2024, and confiscated the cocoa beans.

Graphic Online understands that a suspect, who was at the private residence initially obstructed the police by denying them access to the room where the cocoa beans were being stored.

The officers, however, forced their way into the premises and successfully confiscated the goods, Graphic Online gathered.

Police sources have told Graphic Online that the suspect has remained uncooperative, refusing to disclose critical details, including how the goods were transported to Walewale and the intended smuggling route.

The seized goods are now in police custody as investigations continue.

The incident comes on the back of recent reports of smuggling of cocoa beans from Ghana to neigbouring countries.

Walewale, Nalerigu standstill for Dr. Bawumia as new NPP Flagbearer makes triumphant return home

0

The serene North Eastern regional towns of Walewale and Nalerigu were set agog on Monday when Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia visited for the first time since his election as flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party.

Dr. Bawumia, who was elected flagbearer of the NPP early on this month, is in the north for what can be described as a special homecoming visit, to express gratitude to the people, including traditional rulers, for their support and prayers.

In line with tradition, Dr. Bawumia started his visits by going to his home region, the North East Region, where he called on the Nayiri (Overlord of Mamprugu) Naa Abdulai Mahami Sheriga.

Before he arrived at the Palace of the Nayiri in Nalerigu where a mammoth crowd welcomed him, the new NPP Flagbearer and his entourage drove through Walewale, his hometown, where scores of people emerged from all corners to catch a glimpse of their son.

Dr. Bawumia, who was seated in a bus, alongside a number of MPs and party executives, had to leave the bus, to be in an open-top vehicle, to be able to respond to the cheers from the enthusiastic crowd.

The cheering crowd, made up of the young and old, lined up on the main Walewale – Bolga highway to give the Vice President a befitting reception, as he passed through to Nalerigu.

The reception was even more tumultuous when the entourage arrived in Nalerigu. From Langbinsi through Gambaga to Nalerigu itself, crowds lined up the streets to cheer on the Vice President.

In Nalerigu, Dr. Bawumia held discussions with the Nayiri and his elders, before he addressed the charged crowd waiting for him outside.

Walewale witnesses improvement in development projects

0

Undoubtedly, it is one of the fastest developing and vibrant constituencies in the North East Region, bustling with lots of activities, especially Walewale, the constituency capital, which is also the commercial centre.

The Walewale Constituency has witnessed appreciable infrastructural development for the past six years.

The development projects cut across all sectors including sports, health, education, industrialisation, roads, electricity and sanitation.

While a number of these projects have been completed and currently in use, others are at various stages of completion.

Interestingly, these projects are scattered across all the communities in the constituency.

For many, the level of development in the area is not surprising because it is the home of the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Population size

The Walewale Constituency, which is also the West Mamprusi Municipal, was created in 1988 with Walewale as its capital.

It has a land size of 4,892 kilometres, with a population of about 175,755, per the 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC).

Sharing boundaries with Savelugu to the south, Nalerigu/Gambaga to the east, Yagba/Kubori to the west and to the north by Talensi, the constituency has registered about 75,661 voters.

Voting pattern

As it was formerly part of the Northern Region, it is a focal point for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), with the former winning the seat four times -1992, 1996, 2004 and 2008.

However, the Peoples’ National Convention (PNC) won the seat once in 2000, whilst the NPP snatched the seat in 2012, 2016 and retained it in 2020.

In the 2012 general election, the NPP parliamentary candidate, Dr Sagre Bambangi, won the seat with 19,328 votes, representing 42.92 per cent as against 15,192 votes representing 33.74 per cent polled by the NDC Parl
