WAMCo Boss Encourages SMEs –

0

The Managing Director of the West Africa Mills Company (WAMCo), Frank Bednar, has encouraged Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as well as young business professionals to make regulatory compliance and safety issues utmost in their production line.

The CEO of the Takoradi-based cocoa processing company also indicated that in order to be ahead of their competitors and become a reference point in their chosen businesses, SMEs should ensure their products are always of high quality.

The MD of WAMCo stated this when he hosted 22 SMEs under the SNV, Netherland Development Organization, Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and  Duapa Werkspace, a business incubation center, who were on a tour dubbed ‘B2B Tour’.

The young professionals were at the factory to learn the operations of WAMCo and how they could explore areas of collaboration for growth.

Mr. Bednar took the participants through the technology and modification of tools in the factory to meet current socioeconomic trends in business.

He said, “we want to drive these changes in line with renewable energy solutions to save cost, increase employment levels and expand market shares as we await our certification into the African Continental Free Trade Area Programme (AfCFTA)”.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Duapa Werkspace, Erasmus Ackon, said the trip was to showcase excellence in business practices from other industries in the Region for the young business owners to learn from.

He said, “We have really learnt a lot by observation during the tour of your facility and how standards and quality measures are top-notch and we promise to incorporate bits and pieces into all activities to improve business performance”.

The AGI Western Regional Manager, Albert Ababio, described the tour as an eye opener for the SMEs.

The business, he mentioned had received support from the SNV Ghana and GIZ to retool aside collaboration with regulatory authorities for the necessary certification and standards.

Wamalwa Declares Azimio Parties Must Separate from ODM Over Raila’s Alignment with Kenya Kwanza

0

Eugene Wamalwa has declared that the constituent parties of Azimio la Umoja can no longer collaborate with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) led by Raila Odinga.

Wamalwa, who leads the DAP-Kenya party, claims that Raila and his team have chosen to align with the ruling party, which makes their role in the opposition untenable.

Wamalwa asserts that Raila has allied himself with the ruling party and is no longer part of the coalition that previously united them against the current regime.

“In marriage, there is a concept called irreconcilable differences, which is a ground for divorce. When a marriage breaks down irretrievably and compatibility is lost, the couple goes their separate ways. ODM wants to save Zakayo, while we (others in Azimio) want to save Kenya. We cannot stay together,” Wamalwa stated during a church service in Makongeni, Thika town.

He further explained that ODM has integrated into the Kenya Kwanza administration and cannot detach itself from the new political alliance, especially since some of its members have been appointed as Cabinet Secretaries.

“Team Okoa Zakayo (ODM), we wish you well with that government. You have shared ministries, and now I hear you want to share PS positions as well. You are also looking to divide state corporations. But we will stand firm and resolute with the people of Kenya,” he added.

Wamalwa also expressed frustration with Azimio leaders who claim that everything is fine despite evident issues. He noted that leaders are no longer in agreement.

“We must tell Kenyans the truth. Within Azimio, all is not well. Martha Karua has left for Narc Kenya, and Peter Munya wants to leave PNU. This is because we say Zakayo must go, but some of our colleagues are insisting that Zakayo must stay,” he said.

Walter Mazzarri replaces Rudi Garcia as new Napoli head coach

0

Walter Mazzarri secured Watford’s survival in the Premier League in the 2016-17 season during his time as manager of the club

Napoli have sacked head coach Rudi Garcia after 16 games and have replaced him with former manager Walter Mazzarri until the end of the season.

Frenchman Garcia, 59, was appointed by the Serie A champions in June but departs with the club 10 points behind league leaders Inter Milan.

Mazzarri spent one season in the Premier League at Watford in 2016-17 before his contract was terminated.

The 62-year-old Italian previously managed Napoli from 2009 to 2013.

Mazzarri delivered the club its first trophy in 20 years when Napoli won the 2012 Copa Italia by beating undefeated league champions Juventus in the final.

A year later, he led them to second in Serie A – the club’s highest league position in over two decades – and secured a Champions League place.

Garcia was named Napoli boss in the summer after Luciano Spalletti left the club to take time out of the game last season after delivering the club their first league title for 33 years.

Napoli are currently fourth in table and were beaten by 17th-placed Empoli on Sunday to leave Garcia with a record of eight wins, four draws and four defeats.

Walsh ‘feeling fresh’ before latest round of Women’s Nations League games –

0

Keira Walsh says she is “feeling fresh” as she targets a fourth consecutive summer of international football.

Barcelona midfielder Walsh played for Great Britain at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, and then for England when they won Euro 2022 before finishing as runners-up at this summer’s Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The latter tournament saw the 26-year-old miss a game due to a knee injury and a subsequent calf problem saw her sit out the Lionesses’ two September matches in the Women’s Nations League — a competition through which England can secure qualification for GB for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Walsh said: “After so many tournaments, and somebody actually sent me a thing the other day that I’d played the second-most games in Europe, I think naturally that’s going to take a toll on your body. I think obviously that’s potentially a factor of why I got injured at the start of the season.

“But I did my rehab, the club and England have looked after me, we’ve had a camp since then and a lot of games in between.

“I’m feeling good, I’m feeling fresh and I think that was my little break for me to now go again and push on this season.”

Barcelona midfielder Keira Walsh is hoping for a successful season for club and country

Walsh says another tournament next summer is something she is “definitely” up for, adding: “Honestly, the thought of pre-season is worse!

“I’d rather go to a tournament. It’s special. People talk about the winning but just the feeling of being part of a team for so long and you spend every day with each other — I think then when you go home and you’re not with 50 people is also a bit weird. Even off the pitch it’s a special feeling to be part of a group at a tournament.”

England need to finish first in Group A1 to have a chance of obtaining the Olympic qualification and head into their final two pool matches in danger of falling short of top spot.

Sarina Wiegman’s side are currently third, three points behind the Netherlands, 2-1 victors against them in September, and one behind Belgium, who last month — with Walsh back in the side — they beat 1-0, then were defeated by 3-2.

Walsall vs Aston Villa score prediction

Villa manager Emery has some fresh faces to blood into his team and Wednesday night will likely be the first time fans get a view of new arrivals ahead of the exciting new season.

The sale of Luiz is undoubtedly a huge blow and the early stages of pre-season will show supporters how the side plan to move forward without the Brazilian midfielder.

However, they shouldn’t have too many issues breezing past a Walsall side that ended the 2023/24 campaign in League Two mid-table obscurity.

Prediction: Walsall 0-3 Aston Villa

Walmart Lays off 2,000 Warehouse Workers |

0

Walmart is laying off more than 2,000 workers at five US warehouses that fulfill website orders, weeks after America’s largest private employer warned it’s in for a tough year ahead.

The retail giant is cutting more than 1,000 jobs in Texas, 600 jobs in Pennsylvania, 400 in Florida and 200 in New Jersey, according to Worker Adjustment Retraining Notification (WARN) filings. Reuters first reported last month that the job cuts were because of reductions and elimination in evening and weekend shifts.

Walmart said in a statement that it “recently adjusted staffing levels at our fulfillment centers in select markets to better prepare for the future needs of customers” and that it was a decision that wasn’t “made lightly.” It said that it’s “working closely with affected associates to help them understand what career options may be available at other Walmart locations.”

However, it’s unclear whether this is just the beginning or end of layoffs that have been affecting many large companies.

Wall Street Journal report on China is an attempt to discredit the Belt and Road Initiative

0

by Xinhua writers Zhao Bochao, Li Li

A recent report by The Wall Street Journal, targeting several China-built global mega-projects, was filled with distorted facts, one-sided stories, and unfounded accusations — an attempt to discredit the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative.

What’s the real picture of these projects? Are they really “falling apart” as sensationally claimed by the WSJ? Xinhua reporters traveled there, studied the cases and talked to authorities, experts and engineers.

Here is what we found.

Adriana Carranza, a resident in the San Luis village in northern Ecuador, has fond memories of her days working with a Chinese company at the Coca Codo Sinclair (CCS) hydroelectric project from 2012 to 2015.

“Thanks to the work I had done for (a subcontractor of) the Sinohydro Corporation, I was able to save money,” the former cook at the company told Xinhua. The job was well paid with good working conditions.

Carranza is among the thousands of Ecuadorians who have worked at the Chinese-constructed project, some 150 km east of the capital Quito. As the country’s biggest hydropower project, the 1,500-megawatt CCS has been running smoothly for over six years, generating around 42 billion kWh of clean and renewable hydroelectricity, becoming the largest power source for Ecuador.

However, a recent report by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), which also spoke to Carranza, painted a gloomy picture of the CCS project with distorted facts and unfounded accusations.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). With infrastructure construction a key priority, 81 Chinese central state-owned enterprises have been involved in over 3,400 projects in countries along the Belt and Road by January 2021. The cumulative amount of China’s direct investment in these nations reached 161.3 billion U.S. dollars from 2013 to 2021. A World Bank report estimated that when fully implemented, the BRI could help nearly 40 million people in relevant countries leave poverty behind.

Turning a blind eye to such achievements, the WSJ article dated Jan. 20 criticized several Chinese-built mega-projects in Latin America, Asia and Africa in an attempt to smear the China-proposed initiative.

Watch: Reinvestigation The Wall Street Journal report on China-built mega-projects is untrue and biased.

FALSEHOODS & MISREPRESENTATION

“The 14-hour days were long, and her Chinese boss didn’t speak Spanish,” wrote the WSJ about Carranza’s experience working for Sinohydro’s sub-contractor.

Contrary to what was described in the report, Carranza told Xinhua she was well paid for working extra hours. During her pregnancy, her boss and colleagues treated her “as if I was their daughter.”

“We usually want to work (extra hours)” and “I’m satisfied with my salary,” said Graciela Quirina, who also worked in a Sinohydro kitchen.

The WSJ’s misrepresentation went further. Citing unnamed government engineers, the U.S. daily alleged that the CCS plant has thousands of cracks in its “eight turbines” due to “faulty steel imported from China” and boldly speculated that it could soon “break down.”

In an interview with Xinhua, Miguel Calahorrano, Ecuador’s former Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, said the WSJ article lacks veracity and “has a political intention.”

“How can a plant that is of no use to us have come to produce almost 42,000 gigawatt hours of energy? I’m sure these people don’t even understand what 42,000 gigawatt hours of energy means,” the former minister said.

“It clearly has the political intention of trying to deue the relationship” between China and Latin American countries, he said.

Regarding the cracks, Sinohydro and the Ecuadorian State Electricity Company hired the German testing agency TUV SUD in 2018 as an international independent third party, which concluded in its risk assessment report that these cracks will not affect the operation and safety of the plant for its design life of 50 years.

As to the suitability of the steel, the TUV SUD report indicated that the base materials are within the ues required by the specifications.

Furthermore, the WSJ associated erosion along a section of the Coca River and the disappearance of a waterfall with the Chinese-built project to hype up its environmental consequences.

Ecuadorian government-commissioned research conducted by Swiss consulting company Lombardi concluded that the disappearance of the waterfall was a natural phenomenon and had nothing to do with the construction of the CCS — a view shared by many geologists, local media reports said.

Ecuador has never lodged the issue with Sinohydro, which was tasked with the construction, according to the Chinese company.

Calahorrano said that the CCS plant has managed for the first time in the country’s history, together with other hydropower plants, to raise hydroelectricity in the electrical matrix to more than 93 percent, reducing the use of fossil fuels, saving the country about 1.3 billion U.S. dollars a year from fossil fuel imports and cutting carbon dioxide by about 18 million tons a year.

ONE-SIDED STORY

Under the sensational headline “China’s Global Mega-Projects are Falling Apart,” the WSJ article went on to bring in Pakistan’s Neelum Jhelum hydroelectric project, and again blamed “flaws” in Chinese construction for its shutdown in July 2022.

The accusation is far from the truth. The quality of the Chinese construction, as euated by local authorities during its handover in 2018, was impeccable and up to standard.

Sajjad Ghani, chairman of the Pakistan Water & Power Development Authority, told Xinhua that the WSJ report is unjustifiable.

“The quality of construction of the Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project has been fair,” said Ghani.

There is no doubt that the China Gezhouba Group Co, the main contractor for the project’s civil work, “has done all these things successfully,” said Muhammad Irfan, CEO of the Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Company, which now operates the plant.

The root cause for the shutdown, Irfan told a parliament meeting in November, was pressure from a mountain on the underground tunnel, resulting in partial collapse and a blockage.

The problem emerged when Pakistan was ravaged by floods seen as the “worst in history,” while earthquakes were recorded in the surrounding areas of the plant. Irfan said Neelum Jhelum has signed a new contract with the Chinese constructor to repair the tunnel, with the civil work contract already completed.

In Uganda, another Chinese-constructed project — the Karuma hydropower plant — also came under harsh criticism from the WSJ, which blamed “cracked walls” for delays.

The Chinese constructor Sinohydro told Xinhua that the problem was discovered in 2016 but not substantial enough to compromise the stability of the structure, and has been dealt with properly to the satisfaction of all parties.

“In order to provide a standard power plant, we are always liaising with experts in all fields of the power plant construction to achieve high quality standard plant,” said Bless Ayebazibwe, head of the Ugandan technical team at Sinohydro, adding that they have worked with an architectural expert from Canada, manufacturers from all over the world who always visit the site when called upon, as well as local experts.

Local and international engineers who supervise the construction of the 600-megawatt plant along the River Nile said the project is being built to international standards, despite insurmountable challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and “rampant vandalism” which have impacted the project’s timeline, according to Sinohydro.

Vandalism has been a threat to Uganda’s electricity infrastructure. More than 300 tons of parts have been stolen from the Karuma plant and more than 50 km of conductors cut off and stolen, according to Sinohydro. Delays in compensating landowners affected land acquisitions, impacting the project’s timeline.

The Chinese company said it would overcome all these challenges and hand over a high-quality plant to Uganda.

The Isimba Hydro Power Plant in Uganda, built by China International Water & Electric Corporation, was also targeted. The company said the WSJ report was “misleading.”

There is “a lack of inquiring first-hand information” in the report, said Muhammad Idrees, a Pakistani civil engineer working at the project site.

“We can see that this is just to exaggerate the scenario whereas the project is running well, generating power, heading to the national grid,” he said, calling the project “a successful commission.”

Meanwhile, the WSJ reported that the Chinese side “failed to build a floating boom to protect the dam from water weeds and other debris, which has led to clogged turbines and power outages.” The company dismissed the accusation, given that the problem never occurred at Isimba.

“The WSJ report is pure slander,” it added.

Also in Africa, the vast Social Housing Project Kilamba Kiaxi, built by China’s CITIC Construction outside the capital of Luanda, Angola, was criticized by the WSJ for alleged poor construction quality.

However, Fan Juntao, general manager of the Chinese company’s Angolan division, told Xinhua that there is no construction problem, as the issues of cracked walls and humidity mentioned in the WSJ report are quite rare and result from some tenants’ improper renovations.

The substandard renovations have destroyed the original water and electricity pipelines, leading to water leakage in some houses, Fan said.

“The Kilamba Kiaxi (project) has been completed with good quality,” said Carlos Augusto, an Angolan engineer who is working on Phase II of the project, adding that the apartments are at full occupation and no major complaints have been lodged by the residents.

ENORMOUS BENEFITS

Overcoming power shortages is critical if Uganda is to grow its economy and industrialize. The 183-megawatt Isimba plant now accounts for roughly 14 percent of the East African country’s total installed capacity. The Karuma plant is expected to increase capacity by 40 percent upon completion.

Solomon Acaye is one of around 15,000 Ugandans employed by the Karuma project. He joined it as a mason but now leads a construction team.

“I came with only the skill of house construction, but as soon as I joined here, I’ve learned a lot — carpentry, steel fixing,” he told Xinhua, noting that his newly acquired skills would prove helpful once the project ends.

As part of the projects, roads were paved and widened, and schools and health service buildings were constructed. Hamis Muzinga, who lives near the Isimba project, noted that workshops are mushrooming in nearby towns, “basically set up by former workers of Isimba.”

Neighbouring communities near the Karuma plant are happy to have the large project in their area, said Ismail Bongomin, chairman of the Karuma Town Council. “Because this one is going to (benefit) generation after generation. It’s not just like a thing for today only,” he said.

With a total of 20,002 housing units and the support of municipal works, the Angolan Kilamba Kiaxi project has become home to around 120,000 residents in Luanda.

Costa Sebastiao, a Kilamba Kiaxi resident for seven years, said the condominium has changed his life in many ways.

The Chinese company has brought positive changes to the city, especially for young people, he said, adding “a good number of young people did not have homes, and with the construction of the project, they managed to get a house.”

From the China-Laos Railway that transformed the landlocked Laos into a land-linked hub to Kenya’s Mombasa-Nairobi Railway contributing more than 0.5 percent to the African nation’s economic growth, the Belt and Road Initiative has helped many developing nations embrace fast development.

But the initiative has fallen prey to a Western-led smear campaign. Denis Mwaba, lecturer in Civil Engineering at the University of Zambia, noted that U.S. media have been publishing “damaging” reports to “blacken the efforts of China.” The WSJ article is heavily biased and “not a proper articulation of the facts,” he said.

Mwaba said the ubiquitous success of the global infrastructure program has gained Africa’s favor.

Projects under the Initiative are meeting the continent’s needs, revolutionizing infrastructure and shifting the African development landscape, said Gideon Chitanga, associate researcher at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.

Belt and Road cooperation is also in full swing in Latin America. “China currently offers an alternative to traditional financing schemes, which has led to more prosperous and realistic development aid,” said Argentine economist Pablo Levinton, who believes there is a vast difference in how the Chinese invest compared to the West.

“Any Western investment is based on a simple calculation of expected profit that results from subtracting planned expenses from expected revenues,” he explained. “In China’s case, while that is the basis for any type of investment, it is not summed up as a mere profit margin, but rather as a ‘win-win’ concept.”

The best proof that the CCS plant works is the production of clean energy and its economic, social and environmental benefits for Ecuador, which have yet to be euated by those who criticize the project and try to disqualify it, said Calahorrano, the former Ecuadorian minister.

The hydroelectric plant has also bolstered the country’s energy sovereignty and sustainability, with Ecuador no longer depending on imported energy. On the contrary, it has become an energy exporter in significant quantities to Colombia and Peru.

Speaking with Xinhua, Nancy Chicaiza, a shopkeeper in San Luis who was also quoted in the WSJ report, said she missed the days when the Chinese company was present.

“I am grateful because Sinohydro has helped us a lot,” she said.

(Li Guorong in Quito, Jiang Chao, Tariq Hameed and Ali Jaswal in Islamabad, Ji Li, Ronald Ssekandi and Patrick Onen in Kampala, Lv Chengcheng in Luanda, Jin Zheng in Nairobi, Yan Liang in Mexico City, and Chen Weihua and Xie Zhao in Rio de Janeiro contributed to the report.)

Wall Squats And Planks Best At Lowering Blood Pressure | Health

0

Strength-training exercises such as wall squats or holding the plank position are among the best ways to lower blood pressure, a study suggests.

Current guidance focusing mainly on walking, running and cycling should be updated, the UK researchers say.

Analysis, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, of trials involving 16,000 people found all exercise lowered high blood pressure.

But wall squats and planking led to larger falls than aerobic exercise.

These isometric exercises are designed to build strength without moving muscles or joints.

The plank position, which resembles a press-up, with elbows directly beneath shoulders, legs stretched out behind, strengthens the abdomen.

Isometric exercises place a very different stress on the body to aerobic exercise, says study author Dr Jamie O’Driscoll, from Canterbury Christ Church University.

“They increase the tension in the muscles when held for two minutes, then cause a sudden rush of blood when you relax,” he says.

“This increases the blood flow, but you must remember to breathe.”

High blood pressure puts strain on the blood vessels, heart and other organs, increasing the risk of conditions such as heart attacks and strokes.

And over-40s are advised to have it checked every five years.

Treatment often involves medication but patients are also advised to eat healthily, reduce alcohol intake, stop smoking and exercise regularly.

The pressure of blood in the arteries is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg).

Below 130/85mmHg is healthy while more than 140/90 mmHg is high, according to the study.

The higher number equates to pressure of blood in the arteries when the heart beats, known as systolic blood pressure.

The lower number is pressure between beats and known as diastolic blood pressure.

For their analysis, researchers from Canterbury Christ Church University and Leicester University looked at data from 15,827 people exercising for two weeks or more in 270 clinical trials published between 1990 and 2023.

They found resting blood pressure was reduced by:

-4.49/2.53mmHg after aerobic-exercise training (such as running or cycling)

-4.55/3.04mm Hg after dynamic resistance or weight training

-6.04/2.54mmHg after combined training (aerobic and weights)

-4.08/2.50mmHg after high-intensity interval training (short bursts of intense exercise with periods of rest in between)

-8.24/4mmHg after isometric-exercise training (planks and wall squats)

These are relatively small drops, Dr O’Driscoll says, but could lower someone’s risk of stroke.

Current UK guidelines say adults should do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise a week, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity, plus muscle-strengthening exercise twice a week.

In addition, Dr O’Driscoll says they should consider two minutes of wall squats, or holding the plank position four times with two minutes’ rest in between, three times a week.

Anyone concerned about their blood pressure is advised to ask their GP to check it.

Walking Ghana into Kenya 2007? What the EC and international stakeholders of elections should know!

0

With barely four weeks to Ghana’s elections on December 7, 2024, searing tensions persist over unresolved concerns regarding the integrity of the electoral register and the perceived ability of the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct free and fair elections.

Controversies surrounding the integrity of the EC have intensified, with electoral campaigns facing widespread calls for transparency mainly championed by the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which recently organized a nationwide demonstration on September 17.

Walker Town Concert 2024: Lauryn Hill Joins Nyashinski and Rema in Nairobi

0

American rapper Lauryn Hill will headline the upcoming Walker Town Concert, set for September 28-29, 2024, at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi.

Hill, the legendary lead singer of The Fugees, will share the stage with Kenyan rapper Nyashinski. Since 2022, the ‘To Whom It May Concern’ hitmaker has served as a brand ambassador for Johnnie Walker.

According to posters from The Walker Experience and ticket links on Ticketasa, British rapper ArrDee, Nigeria’s Rema and Kenya’s Bien of Sauti Sol will grace the stage as well.

Lauryn Hill previously visited Kenya to assess activities sponsored by her non-profit organization. In a Reuters interview during that visit, Hill stated, “We were chosen to say some things, and all the awards and stuff, the real meaningful things are when you come out to wherever, whether it be Nairobi or Brooklyn, and spread the message.”

Hill’s interest in Africa was sparked when a Fugees track appeared in the 1996 documentary When We Were Kings, which chronicles Muhammad Ali’s historic match with George Foreman in Zaire. She remarked, “American kids don’t have a true concept of what Africa is like; there are a lot of false and stereotypical images. We wanted to come to Africa to show the world what it was really like.”

Rising to fame in the 1990s as a member of The Fugees, Hill launched a critically acclaimed solo career. Her debut album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, won five Grammy Awards, solidifying her as a pioneering figure in hip-hop and R&B.

This year’s Walker Town Concert marks the second anniversary of this highly anticipated event, which has become a staple in Nairobi’s music calendar.

The concert consistently showcases top African and international artists, with past headliners like Tiwa Savage, Fally Ipupa, and TxC, gaining a reputation for dynamic performances and vibrant cultural experiences that attract thousands of music lovers each year.

The National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Commander Salam Mustapha, has stated that the only verdict from Jean Mensa after the elections will be the declaration of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the winner. According to him, this election represents a “win or win” situation; there is no loss in their dictionary.

Speaking at the maiden edition of the Walk for Bold Solutions in Accra this morning, Salam Mustapha asserted that this is the largest youth rally ever held in the country, challenging the NDC to organize a similar event if they have comparable support.

He urged the youth to prepare for victory by promoting the achievements of the current administration and Dr. Bawumia’s messages as they aim for success on December 7.

The walk, an initiative of the National Youth Wing, saw thousands of NPP supporters, led by national, regional, and constituency executives, march from Obra Spot through the Central Business District, culminating in a mini rally at James Town.

NPP National Chairman Stephen Ayensu Ntim reinforced this message, noting that the rally’s success showcases the party’s grassroots strength. He urged all party members to ensure they vote, warning that failing to do so would undermine their efforts.

Parliamentary candidates also encouraged youth and women to take an active role in the campaign, emphasizing the importance of collective action leading up to the December 7 elections.

Walk against galamsey hijacked by political elements

0

Archbishop Bonaventure Kwofie, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, has alleged that a planned environmental walk by the clergy has been hijacked by political elements.

According to him, the walk, which aims to raise awareness about illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, has been overtaken by political parties seeking electoral gains.

In a media interview, he remarked, “The Accra Archdiocese is organizing this environmental prayer walk against galamsey. It is being hijacked by some political elements, turning it into a Catholic Bishops’ Conference action, which we do not support. Additionally, we are not aligned with the organised labour strike.”

He further emphasized, “The galamsey issue is not a political matter but an environmental, social, community, industrial, and labour issue with wide-reaching effects. Approximately four million people are involved in galamsey, either directly or indirectly.”

The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, in collaboration with the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious, Ghana, and the Catholic Lay Faithful and Professionals, is set to lead an Environmental Prayer Protest Walk Against Galamsey on Friday, October 11, 2024.

A press statement issued by the church on Friday, October 4, explained that the protest seeks to raise awareness about the devastating impact of illegal mining in Ghana and call for urgent government intervention to end this menace.

The primary goal of the protest is to advocate for the declaration of a state of emergency on mining activities, particularly in areas surrounding water bodies, riverbanks, and forest reserves.

Walewale: Police confiscate 37 bags of cocoa beans suspected of being smuggled out of Ghana

0

Thirty-seven bags of cocoa beans found in a private residence at Walewale in the North East Region, and suspected to be meant for onward transportation to neighbouring countries have been confiscated by the Police.

The arrest follows an intelligence-led operation by the West Mamprusi Police Command.

The bags of cocoa beans are believed to have been transported from southern Ghana to the north ostensibly to be smuggled outside of Ghana as part of a syndicate that smuggles cocoa beans to neighbouring countries.

Acting on the tip-off, the police raided the private residence on Sunday, November 17, 2024, and confiscated the cocoa beans.

Graphic Online understands that a suspect, who was at the private residence initially obstructed the police by denying them access to the room where the cocoa beans were being stored.

The officers, however, forced their way into the premises and successfully confiscated the goods, Graphic Online gathered.

Police sources have told Graphic Online that the suspect has remained uncooperative, refusing to disclose critical details, including how the goods were transported to Walewale and the intended smuggling route.

The seized goods are now in police custody as investigations continue.

The incident comes on the back of recent reports of smuggling of cocoa beans from Ghana to neigbouring countries.

Walewale, Nalerigu standstill for Dr. Bawumia as new NPP Flagbearer makes triumphant return home

0

The serene North Eastern regional towns of Walewale and Nalerigu were set agog on Monday when Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia visited for the first time since his election as flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party.

Dr. Bawumia, who was elected flagbearer of the NPP early on this month, is in the north for what can be described as a special homecoming visit, to express gratitude to the people, including traditional rulers, for their support and prayers.

In line with tradition, Dr. Bawumia started his visits by going to his home region, the North East Region, where he called on the Nayiri (Overlord of Mamprugu) Naa Abdulai Mahami Sheriga.

Before he arrived at the Palace of the Nayiri in Nalerigu where a mammoth crowd welcomed him, the new NPP Flagbearer and his entourage drove through Walewale, his hometown, where scores of people emerged from all corners to catch a glimpse of their son.

Dr. Bawumia, who was seated in a bus, alongside a number of MPs and party executives, had to leave the bus, to be in an open-top vehicle, to be able to respond to the cheers from the enthusiastic crowd.

The cheering crowd, made up of the young and old, lined up on the main Walewale – Bolga highway to give the Vice President a befitting reception, as he passed through to Nalerigu.

The reception was even more tumultuous when the entourage arrived in Nalerigu. From Langbinsi through Gambaga to Nalerigu itself, crowds lined up the streets to cheer on the Vice President.

In Nalerigu, Dr. Bawumia held discussions with the Nayiri and his elders, before he addressed the charged crowd waiting for him outside.

Dr. Bawumia said the 2024 election will be about the track record of himself as Vice President and John Mahama as a former President.

While listing policies he recommended as Vice President, which he said are having positive impacts on the nation, he asked the crowd whether they remember any policy former President Mahama introduced as President.

Walewale witnesses improvement in development projects

0

Undoubtedly, it is one of the fastest developing and vibrant constituencies in the North East Region, bustling with lots of activities, especially Walewale, the constituency capital, which is also the commercial centre.

The Walewale Constituency has witnessed appreciable infrastructural development for the past six years.

The development projects cut across all sectors including sports, health, education, industrialisation, roads, electricity and sanitation.

While a number of these projects have been completed and currently in use, others are at various stages of completion.

Interestingly, these projects are scattered across all the communities in the constituency.

For many, the level of development in the area is not surprising because it is the home of the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Population size

The Walewale Constituency, which is also the West Mamprusi Municipal, was created in 1988 with Walewale as its capital.

It has a land size of 4,892 kilometres, with a population of about 175,755, per the 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC).

Sharing boundaries with Savelugu to the south, Nalerigu/Gambaga to the east, Yagba/Kubori to the west and to the north by Talensi, the constituency has registered about 75,661 voters.

Voting pattern

As it was formerly part of the Northern Region, it is a focal point for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), with the former winning the seat four times -1992, 1996, 2004 and 2008.

However, the Peoples’ National Convention (PNC) won the seat once in 2000, whilst the NPP snatched the seat in 2012, 2016 and retained it in 2020.

In the 2012 general election, the NPP parliamentary candidate, Dr Sagre Bambangi, won the seat with 19,328 votes, representing 42.92 per cent as against 15,192 votes representing 33.74 per cent polled by the NDC Parliamentary Candidate, Azortibah King James.

Dr Bambangi retained the seat in 2016 with 26,431 votes, representing 51.98 per cent as against 23,851 votes, representing 46.90 per cent polled by the NDC candidate, Abdallah Abubakari.

In the 2020 general election, the voting pattern was not different as the NPP parliamentary candidate, Lariba Zuweira Abudu, managed to hold firm onto the seat with 32,294 votes, representing 51.2 per cent, while the NDC parliamentary candidate, Abdallah Abubakari had 30,615 votes, representing 48.6 per cent.

However, until the emergence of the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia into the political terrain, the seat was considered a stronghold of the NDC as the party has held the seat four times.

Demographics

Generally, the constituency has a mix of formal and informal workers such as teachers, health workers, civil and public servants, security personnel, traders, farmers, among others.

It is also a busy constituency, with fever-pitch economic activities that draw hundreds of people from far and near on a daily basis.

Its population is generally youthful, with agriculture as the main activity in the area.

As a rural constituency, the main form of agricultural activities are livestock rearing, vegetables and crop farming.

Some of the major farming communities in the area are Janga, Wulugu, Duu, Kpasenkpe, Nabari, Sariba, Kparigu, Tinguri, Kinkandina, Nasia, Wungu and Zangum.

Development projects

The constituency is a beneficiary of the government’s one-district one-factory (1D1F) flagship initiative, with two projects at various stages of completion, while two others had been completed and are currently in operation.

The watermelon juice factory, is a subsidiary of Champion Foods and Beverages Limited, a wholly-Ghanaian-owned beverage manufacturing, distribution and marketing company.

Funded with a GH¢36 million facility from the Ghana EXIM Bank, work on the facility began in March 2019 and is currently about 90 per cent completed.

Already, equipment and machinery are on site, ready for installation. It is expected to produce about 10 tonnes of various juices and beverages per hour when operations commence.

The project will create direct employment for 300 people, while about 2,000 people, including farmers and aggregators who will engage in an out-grower scheme, will also benefit.

It will also curb the annual watermelon glut and improve the incomes of farmers, farmhands and drivers along the ue chain.

Rice Processing Company

On the other hand, the rice farming and processing company, Tamanaa which is located at Nasia, near Walewale, currently mills about 290 tonnes of rice per day.

It engages over 4,000 rice farmers and aggregators in the West Mamprusi, East Mamprusi, Savelugu, Nanton and Mamprugu-Moagduri districts.

So far, some 148 workers have been employed.

The company also generates a turnover of some $1.5 million annually, while it markets 60 per cent of its parboiled rice under the brand name Nasia Star Rice.

Shea processing factory, waste treatment plant

Initiated by the wife of the Vice-President, Hajia Samira Bawumia, under her Samira Empowerment Foundation, with support from the Ghana Exim Bank, the shea processing factory, constructed at Gbimsi near Walewale is completed.

During a recent visit, it was observed that all construction works on the facility were complete, with some machines being installed.

It is expected to create more jobs for the people, especially women, who are the main ue chain actors.

Constructed by Zoomlion Ghana Limited, in partnership with the government, a waste treatment plant is currently at the foundation level and will help to transform tonnes of waste generated in the region into uable produce such as organic fertiliser.

Zipline medical drone centre

Another key project site in the constituency is the Zipline medical drone centre at Vobsi near Walewale.

The facility, which is the third in the country, currently supplies, on demand, blood and other essential medical consumables to medical facilities in hard-to-reach areas across the region.

It undertakes on average 90 life-saving flights a day, according to officials of Zipline Ghana Limited.

Road projects

A number of road projects have been completed in the constituency, with others at various stages of completion.

Notable among them are the Wulugu-Kpasenkpe, Wungu-Mishio, Wulugu-Kurugu, Bulbiya-Dibisi, Nasia-Janga and Walewale township roads, as well as some bridges and drainage systems.

So far, about 15 road projects covering 250 kilometres are being worked on, out of the 846km earmarked by the government to be constructed in the North East Region.

Also, work has commenced on the Walewale-Savelugu highway.

The Walewale township intersection of the road will be upgraded into an interchange, and dualised with all the necessary safety measures.

Other projects

Aside from the road infrastructure, the West Mamprusi Municipal Assembly has also hooked 39 communities onto the national grid, with the remaining five communities expected to be hooked onto the national grid next month to achieve 100 per cent electricity coverage.

Other projects that had also been initiated in the constituency are the two astro turf facilities, the North East Regional Hospital, health centres, classroom blocks and a cattle market.

Challenges/armed robbery

In spite of the significant infrastructural development, parts of the constituency, such as the Nasia and Kparigu areas, are still grappling with poor roads, inadequate drains and bridges.

Checks by the Daily Graphic indicated that the contractor working on the main Nasia-Kparigu-Mimima stretch road has abandoned the project.

Another major issue of concern has been the increasing spate of armed robbery attacks in Walewale and its environs, which has sparked fear and panic among the residents.

The incidents have resulted in the loss of lives and life-threatening injuries over the past months.

In the past two months, four persons have been killed with others injured in some of the robbery incidents.

Opinion leaders/residents

Some residents who spoke with the Daily Graphic — Osman Yakubu, Issahaku Razack, Rashida Fuseini – said in spite of the security challenges facing the constituency, it had witnessed significant development in the past six years.

They mentioned the construction of the two astro turf facilities, asphalting of link roads, Zipline medical drone centre, rice processing factory and a number of projects, which they noted had given a major facelift to the area.

Some opinion leaders — Afa Alhassan and Takora Fuseini- commended the government for initiating some projects which are impacting on the lives of the people in the constituency.

They, however, appealed to the government to equip the security agencies with logistics to be able to curb crime and ensure the safety of the residents.

MCE speaks

In an interview, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for West Mamprusi, Issahaku Aremeyaw Somo, said the assembly had worked hard to bring massive development to the people.

He said within the past six years, a lot of measures had been adopted to improve infrastructural development of the area to address the challenges of the people.

“In fact, for the first time, we are witnessing this massive development; a lot of projects have been completed while others are ongoing and this will go a long way to improve on the living conditions of the people.

“The area has been left behind in terms of development for a very long time but the government is committed to turning their fortunes around,” he said.

Mr Somo, however, said there were still some challenges facing the area and reiterated the assembly’s commitment to address them.

MP’s interventions

For her part, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Walewale, Lariba Zuweira Abudu, who is also the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, said she had invested her share of the MP’s Common Fund to support the development of the constituency.

Aside from that, she had also lobbied for a number of projects and explored available resources for the execution of projects in the constituency.

She mentioned renovation of some classroom blocks, supporting over 2,000 widows, logistics for health centres, connecting communities to the national grid and youth skills training as some of the projects she had undertaken in the past two years.

Walewale Watermelon Factory Nears Completion

0

The highly anticipated watermelon factory in Walewale, a major agricultural hub in the North East Region, is nearing completion and is expected to be commissioned soon.

The factory, initiated by the government as part of its flagship program, “One District, One Factory” (1D1F), aims to boost the local economy and provide employment opportunities for residents.

The 1D1F program, launched in 2017, seeks to establish at least one factory in each of the districts.

Construction of the Walewale watermelon factory began in 2020, with an initial investment of GH¢5 million.

The project was spearheaded by the Ministry of Trade and Industry, in collaboration with the North East Regional Coordinating Council.

The factory is designed to process and package watermelon for both local consumption and export.

Upon completion, it is expected to create over 500 jobs for locals, increase watermelon production and processing capacity, enhance farmers’ income through guaranteed market access and also contribute to Ghana’s economic growth and development.

So far, Preparatory works are underway to ensure a seamless commissioning process.

These include the installation of machinery and equipment, training of staff and farmers and establishment of out-grower schemes to support local farmers

Benefits to Community

The factory’s commissioning is expected to bring numerous benefits to the Walewale community.

The Walewale watermelon factory’s impending commissioning marks a significant milestone in the industrialization drive.

Walewale residents defy rains to welcome Bawumia –

0

Residents of Walewale in the North East region defied morning rains on Monday to show enthusiastic support for Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The NPP flagbearer arrived in his home region to commence a campaign tour of the area as part of his nationwide tour.

Upon reaching Nasia, a town before his hometown Walewale, scores of people, both young and old, defied the rains and gathered around his campaign bus.

The enthusiastic crowd, many on motorbikes, led Dr. Bawumia’s convoy in a procession as he made his way to the regional capital, Nalerigu.

The crowd thickened and the movement slowed as the NPP flagbearer reached Walewale.

At that moment, Dr. Bawumia joined the crowd on foot on the main Walewale-Bolga road and walked in the rain with them.

As Dr. Bawumia walked through the town, the excitement of the crowd grew, with more people, young and old, on foot, motorcycles, and tricycles emerging from all corners, chanting his name in support.

Dr. Bawumia’s itinerary in the North East Region is packed, as he is expected to call on the Nayiri, the Overlord of Mamprugu.

As has been a common feature of his regional tours, Dr. Bawumia is also expected to hold discussions with the clergy, imams, as well as the North East Regional House of Chiefs.

He will also engage with the youth in an interactive session, as he does in every region he visits.”

Walewale NPP Supporters Cry Over Lack Of PC

0

Dr. Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama and Lariba Zuweira Abudu

Some New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters in the Walewale Constituency have lamented over the lack of a parliamentary candidate (PC) for the party four months into the December 7 general election.

The NPP supporters believe that the lack of a parliamentary candidate will affect their chances of retaining the Walewale seat for the party.

“Our opponent, the NDC, are campaigning seriously in Walewale but we are here fighting ourselves in court instead of campaigning ahead of the 2024 elections.

“It will be an embarrassment if the NPP loses this seat in the hometown of the party’s flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” the NPP supporters pointed out.

They appealed to the party at the national level to intervene and resolve the matter, to enable their parliamentary candidate commence campaign.

The incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Walewale Constituency and former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Lariba Zuweira Abudu, proceeded to the Tamale High Court to contest the results declared at the NPP parliamentary primary in the Walewale Constituency.

The Technical Advisor to the Vice President, Dr. Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, polled 343 votes, beating the incumbent MP who obtained 334 votes.

Other aspirants, Tahiru Shaman (Veron) secured 145 votes, while Mahama Jangdow managed with 1 vote.

Subsequently, Justice Richard Kogyapwah of the Tamale High Court granted a plea by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to resolve the issues related to the Walewale Constituency parliamentary primary out of court.

The NPP noted that settling the case out of court will be the best way to sustain peace and unity in the party ahead of the 2024 general election.

However, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could not resolve the matter between the parties, resulting in the continuation of the case at the Tamale High Court.

The Tamale High Court has since ordered Madam Lariba Zuweira Abudu and Dr. Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama not to hold themselves as NPP parliamentary candidates for the Walewale Constituency until the finality of the case.

During court proceedings on August 14, 2024, Samson Lardy Anyenini, Counsel for Dr. Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, prayed the court to grant his client time to study the register used for the NPP Walewale primary.

Counsel for Madam Lariba Zuweira Abudu, Sylvester Isang, prayed the court not to grant the request to Dr. Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, adding that it’s an attempt to delay the progress of the case.

Justice Richard Kogyapwah granted the request of Dr. Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama.

The case has been adjourned to August 19, 2024 for commencement of case management and trial.

Walewale NPP primary: I did nothing wrong

0

Disputed New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Walewale, Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru has expressed disappointment at a court ruling ordering a rerun of the party’s primary in the constituency.

The High Court in Tamale on Monday, September 2, nullified the results of the primary and ordered that a rerun should be conducted.

But in an interview with Citi News, Dr. Kabiru said he was unhappy with the ruling.

“I am in this contest. I was proposed by the people to participate in this contest. I never engaged in any act that would give me undue advantage. And up to today, they have not been able to prove that.

“Even one single act that I did to procure undue advantage. Nobody has accused me of having done anything wrong. Except to say the politics of it.”

Background

Earlier this year in January, Dr. Kabiru, a 35-year-old PhD holder and special advisor to the Vice President, edged out Hajia Lariba in a closely fought primary.

The election, which took place under stringent security measures and was attended by regional and constituency executives, resulted in a victory for Dr. Kabiru with 345 votes, compared to the sitting Member of Parliament (MP), Hajia Lariba Zuweratu’s 338 votes.

Hajia Lariba promptly disputed the election results and lodged an ex parte motion at the Tamale High Court, accusing the party, Dr Kabiru, and the Electoral Commission of electoral irregularities and misconduct.

In the primary, two other candidates, Tahiru Sham-Una and Jangdoo Mahama, received 145 and 1 vote, respectively. Initially, the NPP, as a third defendant, sought to have the case dismissed, alleging that Hajia Lariba had breached the party’s constitution by not utilising internal conflict resolution mechanisms before resorting to the court.

Prior to this ruling, NPP supporters in the Walewale constituency held a press conference calling for the intervention of the party’s Presidential Candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to settle the dispute.

They cautioned that if the issue is not resolved swiftly, it could potentially harm the party’s prospects in the forthcoming general elections.

Meanwhile, the High Court in March granted pleas by the NPP to settle the dispute out-of-court.

In a previous session on March 15, the party had asked the court to dismiss the case, but the court refused and fined the party GH¢8000.

Walewale NPP Primary Rerun: Unknown Person Disrupts Vote Counting

0

Dr. Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama and Lariba Zuweira Abudu

An unknown person yesterday disrupted the counting of ballot papers at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Walewale primary rerun, when he rushed to the table, snatched some ballot papers and bolted with them.

The incident led to the police intervening to secure the ballot box and halting the counting process.

Dr. Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, Economic Advisor to the Vice President, and incumbent Member of Parliament for the Walewale Constituency, Lariba Zuweira Abudu are facing each other in the NPP parliamentary primary for the second time.

A total of 842 delegates from 161 polling stations and 31 electoral areas cast their votes to elect a parliamentary candidate for the NPP to represent the Walewale Constituency.

Due to the snatching of the ballot papers by the unknown person, the ballot box has been sent to the police station for recount and declaration.

The NPP Walewale parliamentary primary rerun follows the Tamale High Court annulment of the previous results declared by the Electoral Commission (EC). The court ordered for a rerun after the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Walewale Constituency and former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Lariba Zuweira Abudu, contested the previous results declared by the Electoral Commission on January 27, 2024.

Walewale NPP parliamentary primary: Kabiru will not abandon re-run

0

Samson Lardy Anyenini, the lawyer representing Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru, has expressed confidence that his client will remain committed to the re-run of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Walewale primary.

This assurance comes after the High Court in Tamale nullified the initial primary results, requiring a new round of elections.

Dr. Kabiru, who had been declared the winner of the original primary, faced legal challenges that led to the court’s decision. As a result, new nominations and a fresh election are scheduled for Sunday, September 8.

In an interview with Selorm Adonoo on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Anyenini stated, “I don’t think he is going to give up.”

Walewale NPP Parliamentary primary rerun ends in chaos after Police seized ballot boxes

0

The Walewale parliamentary primary rerun election has once again faced disruption, ending inconclusively after police seized the ballot boxes.

Voting, which had already been delayed for several hours in the morning, concluded around 5 p.m. However, shortly after, the sorting process was interrupted when police removed the ballot boxes.

Citi News North East Regional correspondent, Mohammed Aminu Alabira, reports that this marks the second time the Walewale elections have been disrupted.

The day was marred by sporadic disturbances, with military personnel reportedly involved in assaulting some individuals at the voting centre.

Concerns were earlier raised by Dr. Kabiru and his team about the venue, citing a lack of official communication on the arrangements.

While many anticipated the sorting and counting to occur openly, it instead took place behind closed doors inside a church room. According to the chairman of the election committee, an unidentified person disrupted the process. This individual has since been arrested.

Dr. Kabiru, one of the aspirants, expressed his disappointment with the handling of the election, questioning the democratic process within the NPP.

His supporter, constituency chairman Mohammed Muniru Janda, added that Kabiru seemed to be leading during the sorting process before the disruption.

Janda also raised concerns about the security of the ballots, casting doubt on the fairness of the rerun. The situation in Walewale remains tense, and with uncertainty surrounding the leadership, the NPP risks losing the constituency or failing to field a candidate, potentially giving the NDC an advantage in securing the seat.

Background

The High Court in Tamale last week nullified the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Walewale parliamentary primary.

Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru was declared the winner of the contentious primary, which ended up in court.

A June 24 injunction was placed on Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru, barring him from presenting himself as the elected parliamentary candidate (PC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the constituency.

The ruling on Monday, September 2, 2024, paved the way for fresh nominations.

Walewale NPP Parliamentary Primary Rerun Cancelled

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that the results of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Walewale parliamentary primary rerun have been declared null and void.

This decision comes after an individual believed to be a supporter of the incumbent MP disrupted the sorting process and destroyed most of the ballot papers.

The incident occurred on Monday during the sorting of the ballots for the re-run of the NPP parliamentary primary for the Walewale Constituency.

According to Gabriel Manu, the Electoral Commissioner for Walewale, the voting process went smoothly, but just as the sorting and counting of ballots were about to begin, a man appeared and destroyed most of the ballot papers.

“The police managed to arrest the person.

He is right now in police custody, and we salvaged some of the ballot papers that had been damaged,” Manu explained.

However, despite efforts to salvage the situation, the damage had already been done, and the EC was forced to declare the results null and void.

“We called the two sides… After the sorting, we realized that some of the ballot papers are badly damaged in such a way that you cannot determine if they are for candidate A or B… We have to stop there for the party to take the decision… We couldn’t determine the winner today,” Manu stated.

The disruption has led to heightened tensions in Walewale, with many residents expressing frustration and disappointment at the turn of events.

The Ghana Police Service has since restored order in the area, with security measures strengthened to maintain law and order.

Kamara Bawah, the suspect arrested for causing damage to the ballot papers, is currently in police custody and is assisting with the ongoing investigation.

The NPP parliamentary primary rerun was ordered after the initial election was marred by irregularities.

The party had hoped to conclude the process and declare a winner, but the disruption has thrown the process into chaos.

Walewale NPP Parliamentary Aspirants Smoke Peace Pipe

0

In a surprise move, the two parliamentary aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Walewale constituency, Lariba Zuweira Abudu and Dr Tia Abdul Kabiru Mahama appear to have buried their hatchet, bringing to an end their acrimonious rivalry.
The two combatants were seen in a trending picture met where they are said to have buried their differences and advanced the interest of the party moving forward.
It is not yet known when and where the picture was taken.
This development comes after Abudu, the incumbent Member of Parliament for the constituency, announced her withdrawal from the parliamentary primary after disputed contest.

The Abudu’s decision to withdraw from the contest was announced in a letter addressed to the General Secretary of the NPP.

In the letter, she stated that she has decided to withdraw from the contest in the interest of the greater good of the party and to ensure peace and unity in the Walewale constituency.

The Walewale parliamentary primary has been a contentious issue, with several incidents reported during the initial primary and the subsequent re-run.

The National Executive Committee of the NPP met today, Wednesday, September 11, 2024, to confirm Dr Tia Mahama as the party’s candidate for the constituency.

The party has commended the Electoral Commission and the Ghana Police Service for their professional oversight and swift action in arresting the culprit who disrupted the sorting and counting process.

Abudu’s withdrawal from the parliamentary primary has sent shockwaves through the party and the constituency.
Her decision is seen as a sacrifice for the greater good of the party and the constituency, and it remains to be seen how this will impact the party’s chances in the 2024 elections.

The Walewale constituency has been a stronghold of the NPP, with Lariba Abudu serving as a Member of Parliament since 2020.

The constituency has been plagued by internal party conflicts, which culminated in the contentious parliamentary primary.

The initial primary was marred by allegations of vote-buying and intimidation, leading to a re-run of the election.

However, the re-run was also inconclusive, with an unfortunate incident preventing the Electoral Commission from declaring a result.

Meanwhile, one person is currently in police custody over the incident that disrupted the sorting and counting process during the re-run of the primary.

The decision by the two aspirants to smoke the peace pipe is seen as a major boost to the NPP’s chances in the constituency, as it brings an end to the infighting that had been threatening to tear the party apart

With the party now united, it is expected that they will be able to focus on the main opposition, the National Democratic Congress, and work towards retaining the seat.

Meanwhile, the NPP’s Regional executives have also commended the two aspirants for their decision to smoke the peace pipe.

Walewale NPP candidate’s lawyers request judge recusal over alleged bias

Technical Advisor to the Vice President, Dr. Tiah Kabiru Mahama

Lawyers for Dr. Tia Mahama Kabiru, the disputed parliamentary candidate-elect for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Walewale constituency, have filed a motion requesting that trial judge Justice Richard Kugyapwah recuse himself from the case.

The motion, filed on Monday, July 1, 2024, alleges that the judge held a secret meeting with the plaintiff and made prejudicial pronouncements.

The motion also asserts that on June 26, while granting an interlocutory application for the inspection and production of the ballot box and voter’s register, Judge Kugyapwah “expressed a view extempore in a tone and manner confirming he will not give the defendants a fair hearing.”

The affidavit accompanying the motion states that the judge has compromised his oath and code of independence and impartiality by giving a private audience to the plaintiff while the suit was pending.

It further claims that the judge’s statements on June 26 touch on material controversies in the suit, prejudging the issues to be determined in the substantive case.

The court had earlier confirmed receipt of the electoral materials it subpoenaed last week and was set to begin a case management hearing before the motion was filed.

Dr Kabiru’s lawyers had already appealed the decision to grant the interlocutory application for the inspection and production of the ballot box and voter’s register.

The case has been adjourned to Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

Walewale NPP asks for Bawumia’s intervention as election dispute faces 6th postponement in court

NPP-FLAG LOGO

Supporters of the New Patriotic Party in the Walewale constituency of the North East Region are demanding the immediate intervention of the party’s Parliamentary Candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to bring finality to the ongoing election dispute in court.

According to the party faithful, the dispute if not resolved forthwith could cause the party’s defeat in the general elections.

The party in the constituency has since been thrown into a state of escalating divisions and acrimony between and among the supporters in the aftermath of the recent internal elections in which the incumbent Member of Parliament, Hajia Lariba Zuweratu, was defeated by a 35yrs old PhD holder and a Vice Presidential special advisor, Mahama Tia Kabiru(KB).

The election which was held under tight security and the presence of all the regional and constituency executives saw Dr. Kabiru defeating the Member of Parliament, his closest contender, by a margin of less than 10 votes, as he pulled 345 votes against 338 for Hajia Lariba.

The MP, however, quickly rejected the declaration of the Electoral Commission and subsequently filed an ex parte motion at the Tamale High Court challenging the election results, alleging electoral irregularities and malpractice on the part of the party, her contender, Dr KB Mahama, and the Election Commission which supervise the elections.

She further sought an injunction, later granted, against Dr KB Mahama from holding himself as the winner of the elections and the new parliamentary candidate elect.

The two other aspirants Tahiru Sham-Una and Jangdoo Mahama pulled 145 and 1 votes respectively.

At the initial stage of the court process, the party as the third defendant had sought to dismiss the case after accusing the defeated and aggrieved Member of Parliament of breaching the party’s constitution by resorting to the court without exhausting the internal party conflict resolution mechanism as stipulated in the party’s constitution.

The judge, Mr. Richard Kugyapaw, however, on March 15, rejected the application and ordered all parties to open their defence.

After failing to dismiss the case in court and getting the MP to voluntarily withdraw the same, the party returned to court on March 27, but only to plead of court settlement.

The party’s National Director of Elections, Mr. Gary Nimako, who appeared in court for the mission requested and was granted six weeks to address the matter at the party level. The case was then adjourned to 23 May 2023.

JoyNews has learnt that, as part of the efforts to internally resolve the matter, several senior members of the party at national, regional, and constituency levels, including a top member of Dr Bawumia’s team, on his behest, all attempted but failed to convince Hajia Lariba to rescind her decision to pursue the matter in court.

On May 23, when the parties returned after six weeks, lawyers of the MP, unsurprisingly informed the court the matter could not amicably be resolved the matter internally, upon which the judge then asked the three defendants to proceed with his earlier order to open their defences.

Reports indicated that the MP was now seeking a complete audit of both the ballots as well as the party’s album used for the elections. She is reported to have even turned down a proposal by the party for a recount.

Sources have confirmed to JoyNews that the 1st defendant, Dr Tia Mahama Kabiru, has, for the first, signaled his intention to enter his defence as he stormed the court last week with the famous Samson Lardy Ayenini as his lawyer for the case.

The matter was adjourned to Friday 30th May, 2034. However, when the parties appeared yesterday, it was announced that the judge was absent. A new date was yet to be agreed as at the time of going to the press.

Speaking to some of the party supporters gathered at the court premises, they expressed frustration and disappointment at the party, particularly, the Vice President and Flagbearer, for allowing the dispute to travel these limits “in his constituency”.

The supporters further reminded Dr Bawumia that the dispute could also hurt his presidential aspiration if allowed to fester.

“…Ahba, Dr Bawumia, we have trust in you, but are you trying to say that you don’t know the implication of what is happening in Walewale, in your backyard?” a worried supporter queried.

Walewale MP, Lariba Abudu withdraws from NPP primaries

In a letter, the Walewale MP noted, “Following the inconclusive re-run of the parliamentary primary in the Walewale constituency yesterday (with the Electoral Commission unable to declare a result as a result of an unfortunate incident),

“I have decided that in the interest of the greater good of the new patriotic party and peace and unity in the Walewale constituency, I will no longer be a candidate for MP in the 2024 elections. I am therefore formally withdrawing from the contest.

“I would like to thank the party for the honour done me in representing my constituency over the last four years and can assure the party of my continued support in the 2024 election campaign.”

The High Court in Tamale on Monday, September 2, declared the December 2023 primary null and void and ordered for a rerun that came off yesterday [Monday, September 9] which was marred by chaos during the sorting process.

The Electoral Commission (EC) declared the September 9 rerun as null and void after an unknown individual disrupted the sorting process and destroyed most of the ballot papers.

The withdrawal of the MP’s candidature indicates Dr. Kabiru Tia Mahama will be on the ballot for the NPP on December 7.

Background

In January 2024, Dr. Kabiru Tia Mahama, who is a special advisor to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, edged out Hajia Lariba in a closely fought primary.

Walewale MP Sues Bawumia Boy Over NPP Parliamentary Primary Results

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Walewale, Lariba Zuwera Abudu, has taken legal action against her contender, Dr. Abdul-Karibu Tia Mahama, after experiencing supposed defeat in the party’s parliamentary primary.

The contentious primary came to a close on January 27, 2024, with Dr. Mahama, a Technical Advisor to the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia being declared the victor.

Dr. Mahama, a presidential staffer, secured the primary win with a total of 343 votes. Meanwhile, Lariba Zuwera Abudu, who also serves as the Gender, Children, and Social Protection Minister, fell short with 334 votes.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the outcome, Lariba Zuwera Abudu approached the Tamale High Court on January 29, 2024, and filed a motion ex-parte, challenging the results of the primary election.

The motion aims to stop Dr. Tia Mahama from assuming the position of the NPP’s parliamentary candidate-elect for the Walewale constituency.

The defeated MP is calling for recount of the votes especially with the 13 rejected ballots.

The court has therefore ordered that the defendants, including Dr. Tia Mahama and his associates, be restrained from proclaiming him as the NPP candidate-elect for the Walewale constituency in the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections. Additionally, the court ordered that Dr. Mahama’s name should not be submitted to the NPP National office as the candidate-elect for the Walewale constituency primary held on January 27, 2024.

“It is hereby ordered that the defendants are restrained herein, whether by themselves, their agents, assigns, workmen and allies, from holding out the 1st defendants as the New Patriotic Party’s candidate elect for the Walewale constituency for the 2024 parliamentary elections and or from submitting the name of the 1st defendants to the NPP, National office as the candidate elect in the 27th January 2024 New Patriotic Party parliamentary primaries for the Walewale constituency.”

The NPP primary in Walewale also featured two other candidates, Tahir Sham-An and Jangdow Mahama. Tahir Sham-An received 145 votes, while Jangdow Mahama secured only one vote.

Walewale Chief endorses Alan, praises his competence, humility

0

In a significant boost for Alan Kyerematen’s presidential bid, the Divisional Chief of Walewale, Duurana Mahami Abudu III, has endorsed the independent candidate and leader of the Movement for Change, praising his competence, leadership, and humility.

During a gathering with community leaders and residents, the Chief expressed confidence in Kyerematen’s vision for Ghana, describing him as the right choice to lead the country forward in 2024.

The team, as part of their Caravan Team, formally introduced themselves and delved into discussions about Alan’s plans for the country.

Leading the team were the North East Regional Anchor Ali Zakaria, Upper East Regional Anchor Nasir Rayan, and several supporters who joined to share the vision of Alan and the Movement for Change.

Ali Zakaria pointed out that the NDC and the NPP have dominated Ghana’s political scene for over 30 years, yet the country’s economic challenges persist.

“Ghanaians have waited long enough. Alan Kyerematen and the Movement for Change present the best alternative for real, lasting change.”

Nasir Rayan, the Upper East Regional Anchor, echoed these sentiments, urging the people to consider Alan as the leader who could bring true economic independence to Ghana.

“Ghana is blessed with abundant natural and mineral resources, yet we still depend on other nations for survival,” he remarked.

“There’s a saying that when the fish dies and begins to rot, it doesn’t start from the tail but rather from the head,” he said, urging voters to look to Alan for true leadership.

Highlighting Alan Kyerematen’s achievements, Rayan recounted Alan’s work as Minister of Trade and Industry, citing the establishment of factories, including an automobile assembly plant.

“Alan has proven time and again that he is committed to creating jobs and driving industrialization.”

Duurana Mahami Abudu III, the Divisional Chief of Walewale, extended his blessings to Alan and the Movement for Change team.

He praised Alan for his “humility and kindness” over the years and emphasized the importance of these qualities in a leader.

“It is the Almighty God who bestows a king, not a human,” the Chief affirmed.

Wales call-up my biggest footballing achievement so far –

0

Lois Joel is absolutely buzzing after being named in Wales’ senior squad for the first time.

The London City Lionesses skipper, 24, is part of an exciting crop of players chosen by interim boss Jon Grey ahead of a friendly against the Republic of Ireland on February 27.

And full-back turned midfielder Joel says her international call-up is the biggest moment of her young career.

She told LiveScore: “When the assistant called me before the official announcement, it was such a great feeling.

“This is my greatest achievement in the sport so far. International football is such an honour to be a part of.

“Hopefully the next achievements will be playing for Wales and helping them get to a first major tournament.”

Easy decision

Joel represented England at youth level but opted to switch allegiance to Wales — a decision she claims was easy after working with former manager Gemma Grainger.

She explained: “It was always in the back of my mind. I had quite a close relationship with Gemma.

“So I talked to her and some of the other girls, as well as going to a training camp, and that really sold it for me.

“The environment was just such a good place to be and made it quite an easy decision in the end.

“I’m very excited to work with Jon. We had a good one-to-one session at a training camp.

“And from what I’ve already seen, strong foundations were laid by Gemma. Hopefully we can continue and finish what she started.”

Euro 2025

Wales just missed out on a spot at the 2023 World Cup as they lost their play-off final tie against Switzerland in agonising fashion.

FC Zurich forward Fabienne Humm scored in the second half of extra-time to seal a 2-1 victory in October 2022.

But while the Welsh failed to qualify, their improvement as a side has been clear for all to see — and a spot at Euro 2025 is now a realistic aim.

Joel said: “Qualifying for the Euros is the main goal. I think we definitely have the talent but it’s about getting the job done.

“Obviously they lost in such a heart-breaking manner last time, so I’m sure a lot of the girls are desperate to right those wrongs.

“But having the experience of playing in such big play-off games will help the team moving forward.”

While new to the international scene, Joel knows her role as captain of Championship side London City — a position she was appointed to last August — will make it an easier introduction to the Wales camp.

She said: “It’s been challenging being captain at times. We’ve got a team full of really big personalities.

“Sometimes they captain me but I’ve learned so much off them and grown as both a leader and a player.

“Hopefully that will help me coming into this new environment, because I have more confidence than I did before.”

If Joel debuts in Ireland next Tuesday, she will also come up against some of her London City colleagues.

She added: “There’s already been a bit of banter. They’ve said how it’s always a close and exciting game.

“And there’s no such thing as a friendly in international football, is there? I’m really looking forward to it.”

Wake up, there is abuse of power – Olele Salvador warns public amidst Bongo Ideas’ alleged kidnapping –

0

Olele Salvador, a prominent Ghanaian pop culture journalist and TV Host with 3Music TV, has entreated members of the general public to be wary of dismissing reports on the alleged kidnapping of Albert Nat Hyde, also known as Bongo Ideas.

Reports emerged last Friday of Bongo Ideas being apprehended by security agencies. Oliver Barker-Vormawor, convener of Fix The Country, linked his arrest to recent information released by Bongo Ideas concerning President Akufo-Addo and First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo.

Allegedly, Bongo Ideas‘ family searched through all police stations in Accra but could not locate him.

According to Barker-Vormawor, when Bongo Ideas was initially picked up forcefully, the family insisted they would not let him be taken again without them.

In a post on Facebook, he said the police eventually agreed to allow the family to join, only to drop them off around the Tesano Police Station.

They “seized their phones, and told them to go and make a report at the Tesano Police station,” he said.

However, both the Ghana Police Service and the Ministry of National Security have refuted claims of arresting Bongo Ideas.

Following these reports, the police stated that they have “contacted a relative who has confirmed that Bongo Ideas is at home.”

Despite the Police’s statement, Olele Salvador remains skeptical, noting that there could be an abuse of power as seen in Ghana by those with authority.

“But the police and the national security released press statements to deny their involvement in Bongo Ideas pick up or? Lol! E do aaa, niggas dey forget the typa mess we are in as citizens vs the abuse of power. Make you people wake up. This isn’t just about Bongo Ideas,” he wrote.

Renowned activist and leader of the #FixTheCountry and #OccupyJulorbiHouse movements, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has provided an update on the alleged kidnapping of Albert Nat Hyde, also known as Bongo Ideas.

He noted that “the police claim now to be investigating the circumstances under which unidentified individuals, presenting themselves as acting under the color of law enforcement, came to break in and pick up Albert the first time in the presence of his family.”

Mr Vormawor disclosed that Albert had already filed a formal police complaint about the events of the previous night, and the police were aware of his complaint well before they released their statement.

“While I have received an account from the Family and Albert himself of exactly what happened to him, I will refrain from discussing it publicly as it is a matter of live police investigation. There are a lot of things that need unraveling; and I am sure Albert himself will addresss what happened to him. My understanding however is that, at this time, his devices were confiscated from him, (phones and computer) and he has no access to his social media accounts.

“I do hope that the Police are able to get to the bottom of this; and that Albert’s account of what happened to him are thoroughly investigated,” he added.

Keynan reported that he spoke with OCPD John Odhiambo of Uriri Police Station, who verified that Ahmed is currently unconscious in the hospital.

The circumstances surrounding Ahmed’s arrival at the Migori hospital remain unclear, including who transported him there and how he became unconscious.

Waiving Import Duties On Electric Cars Is The Right Way To Go – Akomea Lauds Gov’t |

0

The Chief Executive Officer of the InterCity State Transport Corporation, Nana Akomea has commended the Akufo-Addo government for not imposing taxes on the importation and assembly of electric cars in the country.

Waive taxes, duties on special equipment for PWDs

0

Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA)

Peter Obeng-Asamoah, Executive Director, Ghana Blind Union (GBU), has called on the government to waive all taxes and duties on special equipment for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) at the port.

He said that special equipment, such as white canes for the blind, which were necessary for their daily existence, were expensive at their material centres due to high excise duties and taxes.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr. Obeng-Asamoah said that one of the barriers to all blind people acquiring white canes was the government’s desire to profit from them through port charges.

“We have guarantees in our constitution. We say freedom of association, freedom of movement, and things… how do we move about if we do not have a white cane, and these are things that we believe the government should be able to provide for us.

‘‘We do not think we are asking for too much by saying that every blind person in Ghana deserves the right to walk up and down or deserves the right to own a white cane,’’ he said.

Mr. Obeng-Asamoah stated that ‘basic things’ like Braille sheets used as writing paper for blind students in schools were subject to port duties.

”For example, schoolchildren pay their exam fees and write their papers, but blind students must bring their own papers because they are not provided. The government provides textbooks to students in schools, but blind students do not have them,” he bemoaned.

He urged the government to create as level a playing field as possible so that persons with disabilities could contribute to their own and the country’s growth.

Mr. Obeng-Asamoah contended that the blind and other PWDs required special vehicles with certain features and should be exempt from paying charges, like the waiver that physically challenged individuals obtained on their cars at the port.

“As it stands right now, it is discriminatory in the approach, that means that you need to have a physically disabled person importing that modified vehicle before Government will allow those service to be waived.

“I do not think we are being fair, so we need that law to be modified so that all PWDs can enjoy that facility,’ he stated.

Waiting on God: Ohemaa Ampadu’s Inspirational ‘All-Night’ album

0

Come November 2, 2024, there will be a gathering of seasoned musicians, and gospel music lovers to throw their weight behind Gifty Ohemaa Ampadu, one of the female Gospel musicians in Ghana to launch her second album and music videos.

Some of the artistes expected to grace the occasion are Nicholas Omane Acheampong, Hannah Marfo and Erico.

As the clock strikes midnight on December 31st, millions around the world gather for a sacred tradition – the All Night service. It’s a time for reflection, gratitude, and communion with the divine.

The Gospel musician, who is the daughter of the late Highlife King, Nana Kwame Ampadu has captured the essence of this spiritual event in her Gospel video, “All Night,” a heartfelt tribute to God’s guidance and protection.

“I will wait on God all night,” Ohemaa emphasizes, “It’s a time to thank Him for the year that has passed and seek His blessings for the year to come.

“My song is an invitation to believers everywhere to join in this sacred vigil,” she told Myjoyonline.

For Ohemaa, the All-Night service holds deep personal significance as it’s a moment people cross over to the perceived prosperous year.

“Not everyone is fortunate to see the new year,” she poignantly notes. “That’s why we must give thanks to God for His protection and guidance throughout the year.” Her song is a testament to this faith.

The lyrics of “All-Night” were penned by Ohemaa’s late father, a gifted songwriter and musician who instilled in her a passion for gospel music. “I started singing with my father at the age of 16,” Ohemaa reminisces. “We would perform together at programmes, and he taught me the value of using music to spread God’s word.”

The song’s second verse offers wise counsel: “I came across so many trials and temptations, accidents and sickness, but all through this, God has made me who I am.” Ohemaa reflects, “Goodness and grace have brought me thus far. That’s the message I want to share with the world.”

“All-Night” is more than just a song – it’s an experience. Ohemaa envisions it being played in churches and households worldwide during the All-Night service, a unifying anthem for believers.

You can experience “All-Night” on TikTok, YouTube, and Boomplay. “Search for Ohemaa Gifty Ampadu, and discover her inspiring discography, including “Medawase” and “Som Nyame Yie.”

As Ohemaa’s soulful voice fills the airwaves, she asks that you remember her words: “Waiting on God all night is not just an event – it’s a lifestyle.”

Wait until we’ve met to decide on percentage to increase fares before you do – GPRTU to members –

0

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has asked members not to increase transport fares until a meeting is convened to assess the appropriate level of increase.

The Director of Industrial Relations of GPRTU, Alhaji Imoro Inusah Abass said although the cost of fuel has increased, the GPRTU was not in a rush to effect the increment.

He maintained that if they should increase fares, they would have to meet to agree on the percentage.

The meeting he revealed is scheduled for next week.

“Whatever decision we arrive at, the transport ministry is also there to defend. We most often sit with them and argue on whatever decision we have taken. You know we do not run with only fuel, even though fuel plays the most important role, we have documentation of insurance premiums, we have lubricant, spare parts also playing its role, so we have to visit all these issues and put it in one basket.”

“God willing, I strongly believe we will come out with a sound percentage of which our members will embrace and the passengers should not blame anybody as such. For now, nobody should increase the fares,” Mr Abass added.

“So we plead with our membership or the entire professional drivers’ society to exercise patience so that we will look at the other side of the coin and come up with something better which will benefit all of us,” he added.

Wait till elections are over so we all demonstrate over galamsey — Kate Gyamfua to protesters

Kate Gyamfua, the National Women's Organiser of the New Patriotic Party play videoKate Gyamfua, the National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party

Kate Gyamfua, the National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, (NPP), has raised concerns about the timing of the ongoing #StopGalamseyProtest.

According to her, the effects of illegal mining activities, particularly the pollution of water bodies, did not start recently, making the protest timing questionable, given its proximity to the pending elections.

In an interview on Adom FM and monitored by GhanaWeb on Friday, October 4, 2024, she stated, “We are left with barely two months to the elections. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2020 lost votes in all galamsey communities. So, at this moment, do you want him to go back and burn excavators of the miners? They should wait; after the elections, we will all protest over illegal mining activities. Were the water bodies polluted this month?”

She suggested that after the pending elections, both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and NPP could unite to protest over the illegal mining menace, popularly known as galamsey.

Kate Gyamfua further criticised the public for not supporting the government’s fight against galamsey.

“When the Nana Addo-led government started the fight against galamsey, did he receive the support of Ghanaians? If he did, perhaps we wouldn’t have gotten to this point.

“After the elections, both the NDC and the NPP will join the protest. I wonder why they have chosen to demonstrate this month?” she quizzed.

Meanwhile, the Coalition of Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey, a youth-led group advocating against illegal mining activities, has clarified that their movement is driven solely by the desire to see a better Ghana, free from the detrimental effects of galamsey.

“We are a concerned youth. We came together to pull up this. The only interest we have is to wake up to a country where we can always defend our country against any form of government,” the group’s convener, Brownson Adatsi, stated.

The ongoing protest seeks to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of illegal mining and advocate for stronger action to combat the menace.

Wait For My Reply – Nigel Gaise Tells John Kumah’s Wife

0

Nigel Gaise

Self-styled prophet, Nigel Gaise has vowed to expose Apostle Mrs. Lilian Kumah, the widow of the late Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. John Kumah, over his prophecy about the latter.

In a startling revelation, the widow had accused the self-styled prophet, Nigel Gaisie of exploiting personal family information for his own gain.

But Nigel Gaise ran to social media and said that “I will REPLY Apostle Lilly Kumah in few minutes….It is sad thus Christians CHOOSING POLICTICS OVER THE HOLY AND ACCURATE THINGS OF GOD**…..Very sad and disrespect…..I AM COMING LIVE …..SOOON!!….PNG.”

This accusation emerged following Gaisie’s purported prophetic claims regarding the death of a Ghanaian deputy minister in 2024. Mrs. Kumah disclosed that Gaisie was well-acquainted with her late husband’s terminal illness and falsely prophesied the Minister’s death, prompting the family to sever ties with him.

Initially regarded as a confidant and collaborator, Gaisie had allegedly leveraged intimate knowledge of the Kumah family’s situation to fabricate his prophecies, betraying the trust they had extended to him. Mrs. Kumah highlighted Gaisie’s past record of womanizing and extramarital affairs, leading to the dissolution of his own marriage and subsequent ostracization by various churches.
She challenged Gaisie to reflect on his actions, seek forgiveness, and desist from inappropriate behaviors.

Furthermore, Mrs. Kumah lodged a formal complaint against radio and TV presenter Captain Smart for insinuating that her late husband’s demise was the result of poisoning.
Expressing distress over the spreading of misinformation to tarnish John Kumah’s legacy, she called for a thorough investigation into Smart’s claims and urged authorities to hold accountable those responsible for perpetuating baseless accusations during this period of mourning.

The emergence of rehashed social media clips featuring Captain Smart implicating political figures and businessmen in John Kumah’s alleged poisoning has sparked a wave of speculation and condemnation.
Mrs. Kumah’s resolute stance against the dissemination of unfounded claims serves as a call for transparency and accountability in addressing harmful narratives surrounding her husband’s passing.

As the Kumah family navigates these tumultuous waters of grief and scrutiny, the efforts to uphold truth and integrity amidst a storm of controversy underscore the enduring legacy of Dr. John Kumah and the unwavering commitment of Apostle Lilian Kumah in safeguarding his memory against unwarranted attacks.

Waiguru Introduces Mental Health Program to Address Escalating Suicide Cases

0

Governor Anne Waiguru has implemented a mental health program in all medical facilities in Kirinyaga county to tackle the increasing cases of suicide.

Waiguru identified mental health as a significant nationwide issue that requires resolution to prevent unnecessary deaths. The governor attributed the rising cases of suicide among men in Kirinyaga to mental health challenges stemming from depression and family pressures.

During the burial ceremony of Wasafi Bodaboda Chairman Isaac Njagi alias Muthii in Ndindiruku area of Mwea constituency, Waiguru expressed concern about a disturbing trend of suicide cases among men in the county.

Waiguru stated that the mental health program involves training and deploying counselors in all medical facilities.

“The counsellors will provide guidance, support, and advice to individuals, couples, families, or groups facing personal, social, or psychological issues,” she said.

Waiguru emphasized that the increase in mental health problems underscores the necessity for qualified professionals to assist victims in overcoming these mental issues.

The governor urged people to manage their expectations and alleviate unnecessary pressures in life to avoid becoming victims of mental health challenges.

“I want to ask youth, especially young men to speak out when you have an issue, let us join social groups, and engage in sports activities. They help you relieve the pressures and get guidance,” Waiguru added.

The World Health Organization (WHO) attributes the majority of suicide cases to factors such as joblessness, academic failures or pressures, legal difficulties, and financial constraints. Other contributing factors include bullying, alcoholism, substance misuse, depression, and bipolar disorder.

WHO has ranked suicide among the top 20 leading causes of death worldwide, with Kenya positioned at 114 among the 175 countries with the highest suicide cases.

Wagner group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin feared dead in plane crash

0

Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin is feared dead after a plane – with his name on the passenger list – crashed in Russia tonight, two months after his failed coup attempt against Putin.

The plane was seen in a video falling out of the sky in the Bologovsky district in the Tver region. The burning wreckage was later seen in a field, and images on social media purport to show the plane engulfed in flames.

It was initially unknown if Wagner chief Prigozhin – known as Putin’s chef and with longstanding links to the Kremlin dictator – was on board, but it has since been reported that the passenger list included his name.

A report from Rosaviatsiya – the Russian aviation agency – said Prigozhin was among the passengers – but despite AfP initially confirming the death, it is now being reported the exact identities of those killed are unknown.

Russian authorities have said a business jet crash in Russia killed 10 people.

Witnesses to the crash heard a loud bang before they saw the jet ‘fall from the sky’.

Images shared on social media purport to show the burning wreckage of the plane in a field in the Tver region.

Plumes of black smoke can be seen billowing into the sky, with the wreck completely engulfed in flames.

The number 795 can just about be made out on the edge of the scrap pile, which matches the plane linked to the ex-military leader.

Prigozhin, 62, has been increasingly careful since he led a coup against Putin’s regime exactly two months ago.

After its failure, he had been warned that his life was in danger. He was known to take huge care over his security.

Russia’s state news agency Tass quoted emergency officials as saying that the plane carried three pilots and seven passengers.

A channel linked to Wagner said the plane had been shot down by air defences, but this has not yet been confirmed.

But sources close to him said that while the aircraft belonged to him, he usually flew on another aircraft.

Earlier this week a video apparently showed him in Africa vowing to make Russia great by deploying his Wagner troops on the continent.

Former Russian presidential candidate Ksenia Sobchak said: ‘My sources report that an Embraer plane belonging to Yevgeny Prigozhin has now crashed in the Tver region.

Wagner ends revolt but Putin’s grip questioned

0

Wagner mercenaries headed back to their base on Sunday after Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to allow their leader to avoid treason charges and accept exile in neighbouring Belarus.

The agreement halted an extraordinary crisis — a private army led by Putin’s former close ally Yevgeny Prigozhin trying to storm Moscow — but analysts said Wagner’s revolt had exposed Putin’s rule as more fragile than previously thought.

Security measures were still in place in Moscow on Sunday, though fewer police were visible, and passers-by said they were unconcerned, despite Prigozhin’s exact whereabouts remaining unclear.

“Of course, I was shaken at the beginning,” Ludmila Shmeleva, 70, told AFP while walking at Moscow’s Red Square. “I was not expecting this.”

“We are fighting, and there is also an internal enemy who is stabbing you in the back, as President Putin said,” she said. “But we are walking around, relaxing, we don’t feel any danger.”

Prigozhin was last seen late Saturday in an SUV leaving Rostov-on-Don, where his fighters had seized a military headquarters, to the cheers of some local people. Some shook his hand through the car window.

Trucks carrying armoured vehicles with fighters on them followed his car.

From assessing geolocated footage, Washington-based think tank the Institute for the Study of War said Wagner forces came as close as 330 kilometres from the Russian capital, while Prigozhin himself claimed that “in 24 hours we got 200 kilometres from Moscow”.

The mutiny was the culmination of his long-standing feud with the Russian military’s top brass over the conduct of the Russian operation in Ukraine.

Putin had on Saturday denounced the revolt as treason, vowing to punish the perpetrators. He accused them of pushing Russia to the brink of civil war.

Later the same day, however, he had accepted an agreement brokeredby Belarus to avert Moscow’s most serious security crisis in decades.

Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Joe Biden discussed the revolt on Sunday, ahead of a NATO summit in Lithuania next month.

“The world must put pressure on Russia until international order is restored,” Zelensky said on Twitter, adding that he had again invoked the possibility of “long-range weapons” for Ukraine as it pursues a counter-offensive against Russian occupiers.

‘Window of opportunity’

Within hours of Prigozhin’s announcement that his forces would return to base to avoid “spilling Russian blood”, the Kremlin said Putin’s former ally would leave for Belarus.

Russia will drop the “armed rebellion” charges against Prigozhin and not prosecute Wagner troops, it added.

Ukraine revelled in the chaos, stepping up its counter-offensive against Russian forces, with analysts saying the deal had exposed weakness in the Russian president’s grip on power.

Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko said he had negotiated the truce with Prigozhin. Moscow thanked him, but observers noted that an intervention by Lukashenko, usually seen as Putin’s junior partner, was itself an embarrassment.

Zelensky’s senior aide Mykhailo Podolyak tweeted that “Prigozhin humiliated Putin/the state and showed that there is no longer a monopoly on violence”.

But Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic credited Putin’s “strong reaction” with bringing about the abrupt de-escalation, state-run Russian news agency TASS said, citing an interview with Serbian television channel Pink.

“No one else alive today would have been able to stop it,” he was quoted as saying.

Russia, meanwhile, insisted the rebellion had no impact on its faltering Ukraine campaign, and said Sunday that it had repelled new offensive attacks by Ukrainian forces.

Ukrainian soldiers leaving the front line Sunday said the revolt had not noticeably affected fighting around Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine.

“Most people, most military, understand very well that the circus from Russia is still here,” said Nazar, a 26-year-old bearded soldier, parked at a service station on a road leading out of the Bakhmut area.

Kyiv, however, said the unrest offered a “window of opportunity” for its long-awaited counter-offensive.

‘Shows the divisions’

Wagner’s fighters — made up of volunteers and ex-security officers, but also thousands of convicts — were often thrown into the front of Russia’s advance in Ukraine.

The outfit also conducts several operations in the Middle East and Africa, largely seen as having Moscow’s blessing.

“The crisis of institutions and trust was not obvious to many in Russia and the West yesterday. Today, it is clear,” independent political analyst Konstantin Kalachev told AFP.

“Putin underestimated Prigozhin, just as he underestimated Zelensky before that. He could have stopped this with a phone call to Prigozhin but he did not.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Sunday that Wagner’s short-lived uprising marked “a direct challenge to Putin’s authority” and “shows real cracks” in Russian state authority.

French President Emmanuel Macron also said the march on Moscow “shows the divisions that exist within the Russian camp, and the fragility of both its military and its auxiliary forces”.

Foreign Minister Qin Gang of China, which has maintained close ties with Putin since the Ukraine operation was launched, met Russia’s deputy foreign minister Andrey Rudenko in Beijing on Sunday.

Afterwards the Chinese foreign ministry called the mercenary revolt an “internal affair” for Russia and expressed support for Putin’s government.

Wagner chief’s 24 hours of chaos in Russia

0

For one long June night and a day, Russia’s notorious mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin staged an apparent insurrection, sending an armoured convoy towards Moscow and raising questions about Vladimir Putin’s grip on power.

The Russian president even accused his former ally of treason, embarking on an armed rebellion and “a stab in the back of our country”.

But by the end of Saturday, Prigozhin had called the whole thing off and ordered his men back to base.

“In 24 hours we got to within 200km (124 miles) of Moscow. In this time we did not spill a single drop of our fighters’ blood,” he announced.

Twenty-four hours of mayhem, and so much we don’t know.

Was the Wagner boss planning a coup?

Prigozhin was adamant this was “a march for justice”, not a coup. Whatever it was, it came to an end very fast.

For months he has played a vital role in Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine, recruiting thousands to his Wagner mercenary group, especially from Russian jails.

He has long been in a public feud with the military chiefs running the war, but that turned into open revolt as they sought to bring his forces under their command structure by 1 July.

Wagner fighters crossed from occupied eastern Ukraine into the big southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, then moved up the main motorway via Voronezh, en route to Moscow.

It felt like a defining moment in Russia’s 16-month full-scale invasion of Ukraine. But as the Wagner convoy headed north, there came news of a deal, bizarrely brokered by Belarus leader Alexander Lukashenko.

Few believe the story is as simple as that, but if the Kremlin is right this may be the end of Prigozhin’s role in the war and in Russia itself.

He is heading to Belarus and will not face criminal charges, says the Kremlin. His fighters have been promised an amnesty. Was it entirely bloodless? That is unclear as at least one military helicopter was shot down.

And where this leaves Vladimir Putin is another matter.

Wagner vs Russia’s military chiefs

Prigozhin has raged and ranted for months at Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and armed forces chief Valery Gerasimov about their failure to supply his mercenaries with sufficient kit and ammunition.

When President Putin backed their deadline to bring all mercenary groups fighting in Ukraine to sign defence ministry contracts, he refused, seeing it as a challenge to his influence.

In a lengthy tirade on 23 June he told Russians the whole justification for their war was a lie and merely an excuse for “a small group of scumbags” to promote themselves and deceive the public and president.

Then came an extraordinary escalation in their dispute.

Prigozhin accused the military of staging a deadly attack on his men in Ukraine. The military denied launching a strike and the video he produced as evidence revealed nothing.

Late on Friday he announced his “march for justice” was under way.

“There are 25,000 of us and we are going to find out why there is such chaos in the country,” Prigozhin exclaimed. “Everyone who wants, join us.”

Gen Sergei Surovikin, deputy commander of forces in Ukraine, appealed to him to step back and submit to President Putin’s authority.

Moving his forces across the border into Rostov-on-Don overnight, he claimed control of the military HQ from where the war is being run, and videos showed his men in the centre of the city apparently encountering no resistance.

By Saturday morning he declared: “We are inside [military] headquarters.” The city, he said later, had been taken “without a shot”.

Russia’s FSB security service then opened a criminal case. The entire Moscow region was put on an alert under a strict “counter-terrorist operation regime”, as was Voronezh halfway up the M4 motorway from Rostov.

Putin’s televised address

On Saturday morning, looking stern and determined, Vladimir Putin gave a five-minute address on state-run TV and appealed for unity.

“What we are facing is precisely treason,” he told the nation. Without naming his former ally, he said those behind the military mutiny had betrayed Russia and would answer for it.

Prigozhin quickly denied betraying his country, and then went on to criticise the president as “deeply wrong”.

Until this point he had never directly targeted his anger at Mr Putin.

But his sarcastic references to “happy grandfather” were widely seen as indirect criticism. Last month he asked how Russia could win if it turned out that “this grandfather is a complete arsehole”.

Columns of armoured Wagner vehicles were soon seen heading up the motorway through Voronezh region and further north into Lipetsk too.

A fuel depot was set alight `by an airstrike in Voronezh, although it was not clear why.

A challenge to Putin’s rule?

Prigozhin was adamant he was not challenging Russia’s war in Ukraine, just the “clowns” in charge of it.

He also maintained he was not disputing the president’s leadership, even though he threatened to head towards Moscow if his military demands were not met.

For several hours Vladimir Putin looked like a leader who had lost control of a fast-moving situation.

Then, on Saturday evening, came word from Belarus leader Alexander Lukashenko – another close ally of Mr Putin – of a deal.

Prigozhin would leave for Belarus and avoid criminal charges. He was later seen leaving Rostov in a car.

His Wagner fighters would escape prosecution and those who wanted to could sign contracts with the defence ministry.

Where does this leave Putin?

On the face of it, he looks weakened, outmanoeuvred by Prigozhin and president of a country where chaos reigned for a full day.

And relying on the leader of Belarus to save the day looks awkward. It was Russia that propped up Mr Lukashenko when protesters brought his country to a standstill in 2020, after an election widely viewed as rigged.

The Ukrainian presidency said he had been left humiliated.

But there is another view too, that Russians have now seen the alternative to a Putin presidency and for several hours it looked like anarchy.

The military has also found a way of bringing under its control a potentially combustible force of 25,000 mercenaries. That still has to play out, but their turbulent leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, is out of the picture.

Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin on list of passengers on plane that crashed: media reports

0

Moscow – The Russian Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviatsia, said on Wednesday that an investigation has been launched on the private plane crash in the Tver Region.

Wagner Group private military company (PMC) leader Yevgeny Prigozhin was listed among passengers, according to Rosaviatsia.

Earlier in the day, the Ministry of Emergency Situations said that the private plane en route from Moscow to St Petersburg crashed in the Tver Region, killing all 10 people aboard.

According to news outlet RTT, there were three crew members and seven passengers on board the private jet that was flying out of Sheremetyevo to St Petersburg.

In June the mercenary leader tried to topple Moscow’s military leadership and accused them of ordering strikes on Wagner’s camps and killing a large number of forces.

The mutiny was shortlived, and authorities dropped a criminal case against Wagner, state news agency RIA reported. This was apparently fulfilling one condition of a deal agreed that defused the crisis.

Wagner chief to leave Russia in deal to ease crisis

0

The chief of the rebel Wagner mercenary force will go to Belarus and will not face charges after calling off his troops’ advance on Moscow, the Russian government said, easing the country’s most serious security crisis in decades.

The feud between Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin and Russia’s military brass came to a violent head in the past day, with his forces capturing a key army headquarters in southern Russia on Saturday and then heading north to threaten the capital.

Within hours of Prigozhin’s about-face, the Kremlin announced he would leave for Belarus and Russia would not prosecute him or Wagner’s members.

It had been a dramatic day, with President Vladimir Putin warning against civil war, Moscow telling locals to stay off the streets and Kyiv revelling in the chaos engulfing its enemy.

The tide shifted suddenly when Prigozhin made the stunning announcement that his troops were “turning our columns around and going back to field camps” to avoid bloodshed in the Russian capital.

Prigozhin, who has feuded bitterly with Moscow’s military leadership even as his outfit led parts of Russia’s Ukraine offensive, said he understood the importance of the moment and did not want to “spill Russian blood”.

Wagner troops cheered

By early Sunday, Wagner had pulled fighters and equipment from Rostov-on-Don, where they had seized the military headquarters, said the regional governor.

But before they left, dozens of residents were cheering and chanting “Wagner! Wagner!” outside the military headquarters they had captured.

Authorities in the southern Lipetsk region announced the lifting of restrictions after earlier reporting Wagner fighters in their territory, where the local capital is 420 kilometres (260 miles) south of Moscow.

Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko said he had negotiated a truce with Prigozhin, drawing thanks from Moscow.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov later told reporters that the “criminal case against him (Prigozhin) will be dropped. He himself will go to Belarus.”

Peskov also said that members of Wagner who had taken part in what authorities termed an “armed rebellion” would not be prosecuted.

“Avoiding bloodshed, internal confrontation, and clashes with unpredictable results was the highest goal,” Peskov added.

In Ukraine, government officials said the situation had “humiliated” Putin.

“Prigozhin humiliated Putin/the state and showed that there is no longer a monopoly on violence,” presidential aide Mykhailo Podolyak said on Twitter.

While Russia claimed the rebellion had no impact on its Ukraine campaign, Kyiv said the unrest offered a “window of opportunity” as the nation pressed its long-awaited counter-offensive.

Analysts said there were likely to be consequences for Prigozhin and Wagner.

“There has to be, otherwise the message is that a military force can openly challenge the state, and others have to learn that the Russian state indeed has a monopoly on violence inside the country,” Samuel Bendett, a researcher at the Center for Naval Analyses, tweeted.

Rob Lee, a senior fellow at the US-based Foreign Policy Research Institute, said cooperation between Wagner and the Russian military was likely to suffer.

“Putin and the security services will likely try to weaken Wagner or remove Prigozhin,” Lee tweeted.

“Given Wagner’s presence overseas, the greatest effects from this event may be felt in MENA/Africa”, where Wagner has a large presence.

‘Early signs of revolt’

While the Kremlin appeared to have been caught on the back foot, US spy agencies picked up signs days ago that Prigozhin was planning to act, US media reported.

They began tracking indications that Prigozhin and his mercenary force intended to move against the military leadership in mid-June, the Washington Post said, adding US spy agencies believed Putin was informed the Wagner chief was plotting his rebellion at least a day before it happened.

The United States and its allies publicly stayed on the sidelines as officials waited to see how the revolt would play out.

US President Joe Biden spoke with the leaders of France, Germany and Britain amid concerns that Putin’s control over the nuclear-armed country could be slipping.

Moscow issued a stiff warning to the United States and allies to stay back.

“The rebellion plays into the hands of Russia’s external enemies,” the foreign ministry said.

Before Prigozhin’s climbdown, Russian regular forces had launched what one regional governor called a “counter-terrorist operation” to halt the Wagner advance northwards up a main highway towards Moscow.

In the capital, the mayor urged Muscovites to stay indoors and declared Monday a day off work.

Security was tightened in the city centre, with armed men in flak jackets guarding the parliament building and Red Square closed off to the public.

“I don’t know how to react. In any case it’s very sad this is happening,” 35-year-old Yelena told AFP, declining to give her last name.

All road traffic restrictions that had been imposed in Rostov, Lipetsk and other regions during the crisis have been lifted, state-run TASS reported, citing the federal road agency.

The measures came after Prigozhin announced his troops had taken control of the military command centre and airbase in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don, the nerve centre of Russia’s offensive in Ukraine.

A blow to Russia’

Responding to the challenge in a televised address, Putin accused Prigozhin of a “stab in the back” that posed a threat to Russia’s very survival.

“Any internal turmoil is a deadly threat to our statehood and to us as a nation. This is a blow to Russia and to our people,” Putin said, demanding national unity.

“Extravagant ambitions and personal interests led to treason,” Putin said, referring to Prigozhin, who began building his power base as a catering contractor.

As the insurrection force headed north through Voronezh and Lipetsk towards Moscow, the capital’s mayor announced that “anti-terrorist” measures were being taken.

Critical facilities were “under reinforced protection”, TASS reported, citing a law enforcement source.

While Prigozhin’s outfit fought at the forefront of Russia’s offensive in Ukraine, he repeatedly blamed Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Valery Gerasimov, chief of the general staff, for his fighters’ deaths.

Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin was on the passenger list of a jet which crashed killing all on board, Russia’s civil aviation authority has said.

Earlier, Wagner-linked Telegram channel Grey Zone reported the Embraer aircraft was shot down by air defences in the Tver region, north of Moscow.

The jet, which was flying from Moscow to St Petersburg, was carrying seven passengers and three crew.
Prigozhin led a failed mutiny against the Russian armed forces in June.

Grey Zone said local residents heard two bangs before the crash and saw two vapour trails.

Wagner boss was just back from Africa – Putin on crash

0

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has spoken for the first time about the plane crash in which it is said that Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin died.

He said news of his presumed death came after his return from Africa.

“Only yesterday [Wednesday] returned from Africa. He met certain official persons there,” the Russian leader said.

In recent days the Wagner head is believed to have been present in West Africa – where Western analysts fear the group was seeking to widen its reach into other countries, including Niger, where a coup has just taken place.

Wagner is a key pillar of Russian foreign policy, with its forces helping to prop up governments in Syria, Mali, the Central African Republic (CAR) and Libya in exchange for lucrative mining rights.

Wagner Boss Prigozhin Is In Russia, Belarus Ruler Lukashenko Says |

0

Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin – who led a short-lived rebellion in Russia last month – is in Russia and not Belarus, the leader of Belarus says.

Prigozhin’s whereabouts have been a mystery since he was seen in southern Russia during the mutiny.

Under a deal to end the stand-off, charges against Prigozhin were dropped and he and his fighters were to be allowed to move to Belarus.

Belarus leader Alexander Lukashenko helped broker the deal.

Just over a week ago Mr Lukashenko, who has ruled Belarus since 1994 and is widely thought to have rigged 2020 elections to maintain power, said Prigozhin had arrived in Belarus.

But on Thursday Mr Lukashenko told reporters: “As for Prigozhin, he’s in St Petersburg. He is not on the territory of Belarus.”

The BBC tracked Prigozhin’s private jet flying to Belarus in late June, and returning to Russia the same evening.

It has since made several flights between St Petersburg and Moscow – although it is not clear if Prigozhin has been on board. The BBC also can’t verify Mr Lukashenko’s claim about the Wagner leader’s current location.

On Thursday Mr Lukashenko added that “as far as I know” the rest of the Wagner fighters were still at their bases – which could include eastern Ukraine or a training base in Russia’s Krasnodar region.

Ghana U20 head coach Desmond Ofei Ghana U20 head coach Desmond Ofei

Ghana U20 head coach Desmond Ofei has stated that losing nine players from the team that won gold at the 2023 African Games is a big blow before the 2024 WAFU B U20 Championship in Togo.

Only seven players from the African Games squad in March were part of the Black Satellites team that finished second in the recently concluded WAFU B qualifiers for the 2025 U20 AFCON.

Ten members of the African Games-winning squad have secured moves abroad.

Despite these challenges, Ghana finished second after losing the final to Nigeria on Wednesday, securing a spot in the 2025 U20 AFCON by reaching the final.

“Losing nine key players who were crucial to our success at the African Games was a significant blow,” Ofei told ghanafa.org after the tournament.

“But this allowed us to build a new core of young talent, and these boys have stepped up tremendously. They deserve this qualification just as much as anyone else.”

A date for the 2025 U20 AFCON has not yet been set, but Desmond Ofei will be looking to continue training his players in preparation for the competition, as it will serve as a qualifier for the U20 World Cup.

The match officials for the WAFU B U20 Championship semi-final match between Ghana and Cote D’voire, scheduled for Sunday October 27, 2024, has been named.

Malian Sory Ibrahima Keita has been selected as the Centre Referee and will be assisted by Ephraim Whehgar Grant Whengar (Liberia), and

Ghana legend Samuel Opoku Nti has also been named as a member of the Technical Study Group.

The Black Satellites, winners of Group A, will battle the second-placed Group B team, Cote D’voire in an epic youth Championship semi-final clash in Togo.

Coach Desmond Ofei’s side need to be at their best, as victory against the Ivorians will guarantee a place in the final and secure the side’s qualification to the U20 AFCON.

The WAFU B U20 Championship serves as the qualification for the 2025 Africa U20 Cup of Nations, with only the finalists going through.

This 2025 U20 AFCON will also serve as the African qualifiers for the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile, where the four semi-finalists will qualify automatically.
