Spring is the perfect time to refresh your look, and for African-American women, the season brings a plethora of stylish hairstyle options that embrace texture, volume, and creativity. Whether you’re looking for something low-maintenance or a bold statement style, there are endless ways to rock your natural hair this spring. Here are some of the trendiest spring hairstyles that are sure to inspire.
1. Tapered Cut
The tapered cut is a timeless and versatile style that works wonderfully for spring. Short on the sides and longer on the top, this hairstyle offers a fresh, clean look with a lot of personality. It’s perfect for showcasing natural curls or waves, and it requires minimal maintenance, making it a great choice for women on the go.
2. Box Braids
Box braids are a classic choice for many African-American women, and for good reason. They’re protective, low-maintenance, and can be styled in countless ways. This spring, opt for longer braids for a more dramatic look, or keep it short and chic for ease. You can even add color or accessories like beads for a fun and unique twist.
3. Natural Curls with Defined Texture
Spring is all about embracing your natural texture, and what better way to showcase your curls than by using products that define and enhance their natural pattern? A wash-and-go style works beautifully with a curl cream or gel to give volume and bounce. You can add a side part for added dimension or experiment with updos for a more polished vibe.
4. Twist-Out or Bantu Knots
A twist-out or Bantu knot-out is a fantastic way to achieve defined, bouncy curls with minimal effort. The twist-out provides volume and texture, while the Bantu knots create defined curls that pop. Both styles are ideal for spring as they allow you to wear your natural hair in a beautifully shaped and controlled way.
5. The Afro
The afro is a bold, iconic hairstyle that’s always in style, but it’s particularly fitting for spring. Flaunting your full, natural hair with volume and freedom, the afro makes a statement of confidence and authenticity. For added flair, accessorize with colorful headbands, flowers, or pins to embrace the seasonal vibe.
6. High Puff
For a quick, stylish look, the high puff is a go-to. It’s easy to create and can be adjusted to any level of volume, depending on the look you want. The high puff is perfect for busy days, but it’s also a great way to show off your natural curls with a bit of height and definition.
7. Cornrows or Feed-In Braids
Cornrows and feed-in braids are classic protective styles that can be tailored to any occasion. From intricate geometric patterns to simple straight-back braids, these styles are perfect for spring and help keep your hair safe from the elements. They also offer versatility with the option to add accessories like colorful thread or charms.
In conclusion, spring is the ideal time to experiment with new hairstyles while embracing your natural beauty. From bold afros to sleek box braids, the options for African-American women are endless. Professional services firm, Deloitte, has reiterated that the persistent rise in inflation in Ghana and Nigeria will hinder economic growth.
This is because businesses are experiencing increased costs, whilst consumers are cutting back on spending.
In its inflation update, Deloitte West Africa said, “The underlying inflation pressures, driven by food price volatility, exchange rate fluctuations and global commodity prices, are expected to persist in 2025.”
To this end, the firm believed that monetary policy was expected to continue in Nigeria.
At the same time, it said the Bank of Ghana was likely to maintain the status quo with a possible rate hike if inflation continues to rise.
Rising food prices pushed Ghana’s inflation higher to 23.8 per cent in December 2024, the 4th consecutive increase.
Nigeria’s headline inflation lso surged to 34.80 per cent on festive-related spending.
Meanwhile, the Economist Intelligent Unit is forecasting an average inflation rate of 27.7 per cent and 15.5 per cent for Nigeria and Ghana respectively in 2025.
It further stated that inflationary pressures are expected to ease from the more elevated levels recorded in 2023 for all but a small handful of African countries including Seychelles and Sudan.
“Inflationary pressures are expected to ease from the more elevated levels recorded in 2023 for all but a small handful of African countries—namely Angola, Seychelles, Sudan and Tanzania, where country-specific factors will push up consumer price inflation,” it said.

The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama has disbursed over GH¢101 million to senior high schools across Ghana to address food shortages.
This intervention follows concerns raised by the Conference of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) over the lack of food in schools nationwide.
In response, the President directed that food supplies initially intended for farmers affected by drought in northern Ghana be diverted to schools to alleviate the situation.
Contributing to a debate on the report of the second batch of ministerial nominees, the Bawku Central MP reiterated the government’s commitment to resolving challenges in the education sector.
“The President, John Damani Mahama, has already transferred over GH¢101 million to the secondary schools to deal with the purchases that he is talking about. I can show you evidence of the transfer that His Excellency the President is dealing with the issues in secondary schools.
“He has directed that food that we had purchased to deal with some other problem but because of the emergency involving secondary education, he has directed that the rice and the maize be distributed to them.
“So the schools don’t have a problem with food. They have enough food. And then in addition to distributing the food to the secondary schools, he has made direct transfers to secondary schools so that they can purchase ingredients that they need to provide food for the students. So we have started implementing the promises.”

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has reacted to the release of his controversial colleague, Speed Darlington, from Kuje prison.
Naija News had earlier reported that Darlington, who was arrested for accusing Burna Boy of having an immoral relationship with embattled American rapper Diddy, regained his freedom on Tuesday, weeks after being granted bail.
The release of Speed Darlington, born Darlington Achakpo, was confirmed by his lawyer, Stan Alieke, in a post on Instagram.
An Accra-based security consultant, Emmanuel Kwesi Aning has described the appointment of Larry Gbevlo Lartey to liaise with the three-nation Alliance of Sahel States (AES) as an indication that Ghana is willing to improve its relationship with the military-led countries in the region.
President John Dramani Mahama announcing his second set of appointments to the seat of the presidency announced retired military officer Larry Gbevlo Lartey as an Envoy to the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
There was even bold talk of Liverpool winning the quadruple from the media after their 2-1 victory at home to Lille.
The Reds were triumphant in the Champions League on Tuesday evening, making it seven wins out of seven in the competition this season.
After a low-key opening to the game, Mohamed Salah put Liverpool 1-0 up before half-time, bagging his 50th European goal.
Jonathan David then equalised for Lille after the interval, but Harvey Elliott‘s deflected strike sealed another three points for Arne Slot‘s men.
Here’s how the media reacted to the Reds’ victory.
Liverpool made it feel like a routine night…
On X, David Lynch felt Liverpool’s win was never in doubt:
“The scoreline makes it look tight, but that was a dominant performance from Liverpool and a fully deserved win.
“And securing top spot with a game to spare has wider benefits, which Arne Slot can reap when his side travel to PSV Eindhoven next week.”
Gregg Evans of The Athletic hailed Liverpool’s record-breaking defence:
“Liverpool’s ability to keep the ball out of the net this season was highlighted by another European club record being broken.
“Until they conceded in the 62nd minute, Liverpool had gone a total of 599 minutes in Europe without shipping a goal, surpassing the previous record of 572 minutes without conceding held by Rafa Benitez’s team in the 2005-06 season.
“The defence has been a key factor in propelling Arne Slot’s team to the top of the Champions League table.
[…]
“That Liverpool were able to keep it so tight with a makeshift back line again illustrates the quality in the defensive ranks. They have by far the best defensive record in the Champions League this season, conceding just twice in seven games.”
Arne Slot’s cool manner is rubbing off…
The Telegraph‘s Chris Bascombe praised Liverpool’s 100 percent record in the Champions League:
“Slot can give thanks to the new Champion League format and acclaim Liverpool as Europe’s best. For another week, at least.
“Victory over Lille guaranteed qualification into the round of 16, although an unlikely comeback by nearest rivals Barcelona means they will have to wait to do so as table toppers.
[…]
“Seven out of seven is some achievement given the calibre of many of their opponents, although Slot will be the first to warn this is all about laying a foundation for the more important business in spring.”

The Daily Mail‘s Lewis Steele even dared mention talk of a potential quadruple for the Reds this season:
“Arne Slot could be used as a dictionary example for the definition of cool, calm and collected – but even he must have some moments where his achievements so far at Liverpool take him aback.
“Maybe it sinks in when he is sitting in his Aston Martin, stuck in the inevitable traffic on his commute home from training every day. Or maybe when he is cooped up in his office poring over clips of upcoming opponents.
“Seven wins from seven and into the knockout stages of the Champions League without even a tiny blemish, top of the Premier League with just one defeat and still in both domestic cups.
“We will not discuss the ‘Q’ word just yet but soon it will become a hard conversation to avoid.”
It was a good night for Harvey Elliott…
Evans focused on a strong evening for Elliott, as he looks to become more of a regular:
“It’s a line Harvey Elliott has said on multiple occasions: ‘I don’t want to be known as a supersub.’
“Yet, here we are again, discussing the 21-year-old’s performance off the bench.
[…]
“Still, Elliott wants to play more minutes and establish himself in the side after fighting back from an injury earlier in the season, and these 45 minutes were a good start.
“He should at least take some satisfaction that he was the first attacking player called upon by Slot from the bench.”
Meanwhile, Jacob Leeks of the Mirror lauded another milestone evening for the incomparable Salah:
“It has been a ridiculous season from Mo Salah and he reached yet another landmark on Tuesday.
“Salah struck 11 minutes before the break to bring what had been a fairly banal game to life with a neat finish past Lucas Chevalier.
“The strike was his 50th European goal since joining Liverpool back in the summer of 2017. He had already become the Reds’ all-time leading scorer in Europe, with Tuesday’s goal extending his record.
“The Egyptian now has nine more European strikes for Liverpool than previous record holder Steven Gerrard. His match-winning performance is the latest evidence that Reds chiefs should hand him a new contract.”
Former Asante Kotoko defender Christopher Nakai Nettey has officially signed for Nations FC during the ongoing transfer window, Ghanasportspage.com can report.
The 25-year-old right-back joins on a free transfer after parting ways with Great Olympics at the end of the 2023/24 season. Nettey had joined Great Olympics ahead of last season following his departure from Kotoko.
During his time with Great Olympics, Nettey proved his worth, making 20 league appearances and scoring two goals in the Ghana Premier League.
Nations FC, eager to bolster their squad, believe Nettey’s experience and versatility will play a pivotal role in their campaign as they aim for a strong performance in the league.
Media personality Afia Pokua, also known as Vim Lady, has criticized Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, for his previous comments in which he allegedly incited the youth of Obuasi against AngloGold Ashanti (AGA). Captain Smart had accused the company of denying indigenous people their rights, with the alleged backing of the military.
In response to this, Afia Pokua stated that society should partially take responsibility for the behavior of journalists like Captain Smart, who receive praise even when they act irresponsibly. She emphasized that it was not just at TV3 that Captain Smart engaged in such conduct, but also at Adom, Angel, and Fox, where he gained support from the public. She pointed out that media consumers, by applauding such actions, have contributed to the situation.
“It is not on TV3 that Captain Smart started all these things. He did it at Adom, Angel, and Fox. We were clapping for him to the extent that other radio stations would tell you to be like Captain,” she said.
Afia Pokua further stated that the media industry itself is partly to blame, noting that the absence of proper regulations and laws has allowed the media to become chaotic. She also suggested that the media coalition shares some responsibility for this lack of proper oversight.
Her comments follow the tragic death of seven individuals in a confrontation between suspected illegal miners and state security officers at Obuasi, stationed at AngloGold Ashanti. On January 18, 2025, illegal miners attempted to breach the security at AGA’s concession in Obuasi, resulting in a violent clash with soldiers.
According to a release from Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations for the Ghana Armed Forces, approximately 60 illegal miners breached the security fence at the Cote D’or Ramp, with the intention of accessing the Deep Decline of the mines. In response, the soldiers on duty fired back in self-defense, as the illegal miners were armed with various weapons including locally made rifles, pump-action guns, and knives. The exchange of fire led to the deaths of seven illegal miners, with one other injured.
Following the incident, the president has ordered an immediate investigation into the matter. A statement from the president’s spokesperson, Felix Ofosu-Kwakye, expressed regret over the loss of lives, noting that the victims were reportedly illegal miners involved in the violent clash at the Obuasi mining site.

Two months ago, Nigeria’s beleaguered energy sector witnessed a very significant event: the Dangote Oil Refinery began producing gasoline and selling it domestically to Nigeria’s state oil firm, Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), marking the first time in decades Africa’s largest oil producer is refining its own crude.
The state-of-the-art $20.5 billion refinery was launched in January 2024, but only began producing gasoline in September, expected to reach full operations in November. The giant refinery has a capacity to process 650,000 barrels of crude per day, considerably bigger than any refinery in Europe and more than enough for Nigeria’s needs.
To sweeten the deal further, the facility is buying crude and selling refined fuels in Nigeria in the local currency, saving the country’s much-needed foreign exchange, especially the US dollar.
But now Africa’s largest refinery is beginning to disrupt Europe’s Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) markets. According to OPEC, the Dangote refinery has cut down Nigeria’s imports of petroleum products from Europe. According to experts, the Dangote refinery might end the decades-long gasoline trade from Europe to Africa, valued at $17 billion per year.
“The ongoing operational ramp-up efforts at Nigeria’s new Dangote refinery and its gasoline (petrol) exports to the international market will likely weigh further on the European gasoline market,” the report states.
“Continued gasoline production in Nigeria, a country that has relied heavily on imports to meet its domestic fuel needs in the past, will most likely continue to free up gasoline volumes in international markets which will call for new destinations and flow adjustments for the extra volumes going forward.”
The Oil Mafia
Unfortunately for Aliko Dangote, Africa’s second richest man and owner of the Dangote refinery, his giant plant has also put him on a collision course with Nigeria’s feared ‘oil mafia’.
“I knew there would be a fight. But I didn’t know that the mafia in oil, they are stronger than the mafia in drugs,” Mr Dangote told an investment conference in June.
“They don’t want the trade to stop. It’s a cartel. Dangote comes along and he’s going to disrupt them entirely. Their business is at risk,” says Mr Emmanuel, a Nigerian oil expert.
According to the BBC, since oil was discovered in the West African nation in 1956, the country’s downstream sector has largely been a cesspit of shady deals with little accountability by the NNPC.
For decades, Nigeria has been producing and exporting its crude which is then refined abroad. NNPC swaps Nigeria’s crude oil for refined products, including petrol, which are shipped back home.
Incredibly, it only started publishing its accounts five years ago, despite the fact that oil revenue accounts for nearly 90% of Nigeria’s export earnings. In other words, until recently, only the NNPC knew exactly how much money changed hands and who was involved in these “oil swaps”.
Dangote’s new refinery should definitely be a boon for the country. Unfortunately, its arrival has coincided with developments completely out of his control. Since the 1970s, the NNPC has been subsidizing fuel prices for local buyers. Every year, the state-owned firm has been gradually clawing this money back by depositing lower royalty payments with the Nigerian treasury.
However, Nigeria’s new President Bola Tinubu was forced to scrap the subsidy in 2023 after it cost the government $10bn, more than 40% of the total money it collected in taxes. Further, he stopped the policy of artificially propping up the value of the naira, and let market forces determine its value. Nigerians are now paying ~$2.30 per gallon of gasoline, dirt-cheap by U.S. standards but triple what they were paying just a couple of years ago.
Only time will tell whether the Dangote Refinery is able to achieve its full potential. Nigeria is the home of the famous Bonny Light crude, a light-sweet crude oil grade produced at the Bonny oil hub and an important benchmark crude for all West African crude production.
Bonny Light has particularly good gasoline yields, which has made it a popular crude for U.S. refiners, particularly on the U.S. East Coast. Two years ago, Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC)CEO Melee Kyari revealed that Nigeria is losing nearly all the oil output at oil hub Bonny,
“As you may be aware, because of the very unfortunate acts of vandals along our major pipelines from Atlas Cove all the way to Ibadan, and all others connecting all the 37 depots that we have across the country, none of them can take delivery of products today. The reason is very simple. For some of the lines, for instance, from Warri to Benin, we haven’t operated for 15 years. Every molecule of product that we put gets lost. Do you remember the sad fire incident close to Sapele that killed so many people? We had to shut it down, and as we speak, we have a high level of losses on our product pipeline,” he said.
Oil theft remains a major problem for the Nigerian energy sector, and could hinder the refinery from buying all of its crude locally.
“NNPC doesn’t have enough crude for Dangote. Despite all this instruction to give ample supply of crude to the refinery, NNPC can’t supply Dangote with more than 300,000 barrels per day,” Mr Akinosho of the Africa Oil+Gas Report told BBC.
Meanwhile, the oil and gas multinational divestment from the Niger Delta that kicked off over a decade has hit a peak. Numerous oil and gas majors have exited the Nigerian market over the past few years despite Africa’s largest economy opening its doors for wider exploration courtesy of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.
Nigeria’s oil production has declined to 1.3 million barrels per day currently from around 2.1 million barrels per day in 2018.

Kofi Adams is the nominee for Minister of Sports and Recreation
For a long time, it seemed like Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye was destined for the role of Minister of Sports and Recreation under the John Mahama government.
His outlook as a reformist during his first stint as a sports minister and the state of Ghana sports, particularly football, which most people admit needs an immediate and massive overhaul, had made him the quintessential candidate for the role.
Further fueling suspicions of his potential appointment as Minister of Sports and Recreation were public endorsements by industry players and reports from pro-NDC social media pages that his appointment was just a matter of when and not if.
The resignation of Dr. Randy Abbey from his role as host of Good Morning Ghana, however, seemed to have thrown a spanner in the works for Nii Lante Vanderpuye’s chances, as the role reportedly became a coin toss between the two.
Out of nowhere, however, Kofi Adams, whose name had been absent from the reports, made a strong entry as the preferred candidate of President John Dramani Mahama, torpedoing Nii Lante Vanderpuye and Dr. Randy Abbey, who until his announcement on Monday, January 20, was headed for a role in the oil and gas sector.
A statement from the presidency on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, confirmed Kofi Adams, who is the Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency, as the sports and recreation minister nominee.
The announcement shocked the sporting world in Ghana, as little is known about Kofi Adams’ connection with the industry beyond his public admission of being a huge boxing fan, which is not surprising as he was a long-time aide of late President Jerry John Rawlings, who was a boxing aficionado.
As we digest the story, which is arguably the most surprising ministerial nomination so far, GhanaWeb brings you a profile of Kofi Adams.
Below is Kofi Adams’ profile:
Full name Kofi Idie Adams, the now lawmaker for the Buem Constituency, was born on May 2, 1975.
He is a native of Teteman in the Jasikan District of the Oti Region.
A former teacher at Adisadel College, Kofi Adams holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology with an emphasis on Epidemiology of Parasitic Diseases.
Kofi Adams subsequently became the Spokesperson and Director of Public Affairs for Flt Lt. Jerry John Rawlings (Rtd), a role he served until 2014 when he became the National Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He previously also served as Deputy General Secretary of the NDC.
In the 2016 elections, Kofi Adams was appointed as campaign coordinator of the NDC.
Kofi Adams made his way to Parliament after winning the Buem Constituency seat on the ticket of the NDC in the 2020 elections.
His good works appeared to have paid off as he was elected for the second time by the constituents in the 2024 elections.
Controversial Nigerian crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has addressed the recent executive order by United States President Donald Trump, which recognizes only two genders—male and female.
The policy, part of a series of directives signed by the president on his first day back in office, mandates the recognition of only male and female genders in all U.S. government policies.
The Minority Leader in Parliament, Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has admonished Ghanaian politicians to emulate the exemplary relationship between Jinapor brothers who are in different political parties.
The relationship between the Member of Parliament for Yapei Kusawgu, John Abdulai Jinapor of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and MP for Damongo, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Minority Leader noted, should be a lesson for all Ghanaians.

The government’s quest to establish the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) to regulate the small-scale mining sector does not only seek to achieve effective regulation but also aims to revitalise Ghana’s gold industry, enhance foreign exchange inflows and contribute to stabilising the local currency.
Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi, will be expected to play a key role in these efforts.
Sammy Gyamfi takes the helm of the PMMC, filling the boots of outgone Managing Director, Nana Akwasi Awuah.
With a legacy of excellence and responsibility on his shoulders, Sammy Gyamfi steps into the role at a time when Ghana’s mineral sector holds immense promise for economic transformation.
PMMC, the legally authorised body for grading, valuing, processing, buying and selling precious minerals in Ghana, boasts of cutting-edge technology and unmatched expertise in determining the purity of gold, diamonds and other precious metals.
Key among Sammy Gyamfi’s immediate priorities is spearheading the establishment of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), a flagship initiative under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.
This project is designed to transform the sustainable management and marketing of Ghana’s gold resources.
The GoldBod will also seek to formalise the small-scale gold mining sector, a critical component of the nation’s mining industry.
Under the guidance of the Finance Ministry, this initiative aims to inject transparency and professionalism into a sector historically confronted with challenges.
With gold prices projected by Databank Research to rise to between $2,500 and $3,100 per ounce by 2025 driven by geopolitical tensions and potential U.S. interest rate cuts, Ghana stands to gain significant forex inflows with proper management of its natural resources .
Finance Minister-designate Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson at his vetting on January 13,2025 indicated that the establishment of Ghana Gold Board will in the long run see to stabilize the struggling cedi.
“In the long term as a country, we need to sustainably anchor the Ghana Cedi with a number of policies. First is the establishment of the Ghana Gold Board. This will help us use the gold in a way that brings in the needed forex to support the Cedi in the very short term,” he said.
Amid growing unrest linked to chieftaincy and land disputes, National Security Coordinator DCOP Abdul Razak Osman has issued a stern warning about criminals taking advantage of these conflicts.
Speaking to security personnel deployed to Nkwanta to restore calm, DCOP Osman emphasized the critical need for a unified and strategic response from security agencies to address the escalating situation.
When activist Oliver Barker Vormawor saw reports in September that Ghana’s water agency would not be able to supply some parts of the country with water due to extreme contamination of main rivers from small-scale mining activities, he knew he had to do something.
Later that month, Vormawor and dozens of other concerned Ghanaians took to the streets in the capital city, Accra, to protest against what they said was President Nana Akufo-Addo’s inaction to stop a “looming environmental catastrophe”. They were determined to put the matter on the ballot ahead of the hotly contested December general elections. But rather than get a reaction to their demands, Vormawor and several of his comrades were arrested and imprisoned for weeks on charges of illegal assembly.
Now, although Akufo-Addo’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) was voted out, activists like Vormawor say they have just as little faith in the new president, John Mahama, and his ability to keep the mounting pollution of Ghana’s rivers and soil in check.
“There isn’t any roadmap yet from Mahama on how to tackle the problem,” Vormawor, who once served at the United Nations as a legal officer, told Al Jazeera. “It’s really difficult to say that his government will be more aggressive on this because even as the opposition party, they were very tentative and uncomfortable taking up the issue,” he added, referring to Mahama’s National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Formerly called the “Gold Coast”, the West African nation is bending under pressure from widespread, incessant small-scale mining of the shiny metal. Much of that artisanal activity falls under what locals call “galamsey”, or in full “gather them and sell”. The term once referred to illegal mining, carried out by mostly untrained young men and women, but now more loosely encompasses licensed small-scale operations that mine unsustainably.

Officials allegedly complicit in galamsey
Galamsey has been in practice for many years, but prices of gold that rose globally to an all-time high (close to $3,000 per gram) in late 2024 caused a corresponding surge in illegal mining across Ghana, and in effect, more intense devastation of water bodies.
Small-scale miners use lots of water by digging up soil around riverbeds in forested areas and washing it off to reveal gold ore. They use toxic chemicals such as mercury and cyanide to separate the gold from the ore, and those chemicals flow into rivers that hundreds of communities depend on for drinking and domestic use. Some people say they earn about $70 to $100 a day.
By 2017, more than 60 percent of the country’s water bodies were already polluted by mercury and other heavy metals, turning once-clear rivers a murky brown, according to the country’s Water Resources Commission. The chemicals, which can damage lungs, are affecting thousands of acres of farmlands. Ghana’s Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) said it lost 2 percent of the total cocoa cultivation area to mining. Some farmers allege that galamsey operators buy off their land or intimidate them into selling.
“This is a problem that has been going on for decades now, but it’s a problem that’s escalating fast and this has created a sense among Ghanaians that we are running out of time to protect our country and our people,” Ewurabena Yanyi-Akofur, country director of the nongovernmental organisation WaterAid, told Al Jazeera.
“While illegal gold mining was happening mainly in the south of the country, our research shows that it’s now endemic in the north. The presence of mercury and other toxins in water is leading to skin diseases and other health crises,” she added.

In a 2024 report, WaterAid warned that Ghana might have to import water by 2030 in a business-as-usual scenario as drinking water sources shrink.
Activists are particularly angry at LI 2462, an Akufo-Addo-era law that passed in November 2022, which allowed for mining concessions to be allocated in the country’s biodiversity hotspots, including protected forests. A previous policy limited mining in forests and protected reserves to about 2 percent of their total area.
Many activists at the time denounced the law and called attention to the fact that the country lost the equivalent of 30,000 football fields to deforestation for logging, agriculture, and illegal mining of gold and other minerals like bauxite that year.
However, the government pushed ahead with the law and proceeded to approve mining licences – for exploration, industrial operations, and small-scale mining, at an unprecedented rate. Where officials gave out an estimated 90 licences between 1988 and early 2017, at least 2,000 more were given out between September 2017 and January 2025, according to data from the Ghana Mining Repository. That period falls under Akufo-Addo’s tenure. Most licences were for small-scale mines, and key reserves like the Nkrabia Forest Reserve, west of Accra, and the Boin Tano Reserve, located in the country’s Western Region, were among those allocated.
Anger against the Akufo-Addo government intensified after it surfaced that some of the companies newly licensed under LI 2462 belonged to high-placed politicians and members of Akufo-Addo’s NNP party and that some of those people were also running illegal mines.

In April 2023, an explosive report by former Environment Minister Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng to Akufo-Addo leaked to the public. In it, Frimpong-Boateng accused “many party officials … their friends, personal assistants, agents, relatives” of engaging in illegal mining. He accused, among others, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, an influential businessman and relative of Akufo-Addo, of interfering in the arrest of mining companies that destroyed forests.
“It was an open secret that they were using this as a way to raise money for the party, that officials would get their own little corners,” Vormawor, the activist, told Al Jazeera. Activists like him say the proliferation of small-scale mining attracted more illegal mines, as the government failed to set standards and ensure supervision.
The Akufo-Addo government denied the allegations levelled in the Frimpong-Boateng report and said it was a catalogue of “personal grievances” with no evidence. In October 2024, the administration deployed the military across water bodies in the country to crack down on illegal miners under a special “Operation Halt”.
New president, but little hope
Still, the results of galamsey are glaring. On January 2, the Ghana water agency again shut down a water treatment plant, this time in the western Tarkwa-Nsuaem region, due to severe pollution of the River Bonsa, which provides drinking water for more than 200,000 people in the area. It was the second time in five months authorities were forced to cut supply.
President Mahama, who was sworn in for a second time into office on January 7, has promised to “reset” Ghana and deal with illegal mining.
In an interview with Voice of America days after his sweeping win in the December elections, Mahama said his government would prioritise passing a law to ban mining in forest reserves and areas close to water bodies. He also promised that his administration would work with the country’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to clean up polluted rivers of effluents and heavy metals.

However, the president stopped short of promising to reverse the small-scale licences recently approved, or to put a hold on new concessions, pointing out that it provides a means of livelihood.
“People need to distinguish between small-scale mining and illegal mining: small-scale mining is legal,” the president said. “There are ways of doing it without destroying the environment in Canada, Australia, and the United States. Technology exists. So why don’t we … train our people to do mining in a way that is safe for the environment? We’re willing to consider those things.”
Mahama first led the government for four years between 2012 and 2016. At that time, galamsey was already an issue, although his administration is credited for banning mining in forest reserves.
Still, some accused Mahama’s administration of failing to check the influx of Chinese nationals who poured into Ghana to invest in small-scale mining equipment such as soil excavators and who worked alongside Ghanaian locals. In 2013, the Ghana Immigration Service deported more than 4,500 Chinese nationals after raids on illegal mines. Now, much of the illegal mining is done by Ghanaians.
Activist Vormawor said he does not expect much from the Mahama government because of his administration’s “weak action” in his first presidency. The president, he said, ought to repeal the controversial Akufo-Addo law and several licences and declare a state of emergency. Without those measures, Vormawor said, he will not stop protesting.
“Yes, there is small-scale mining and there is illegal mining, but most of it is simply irresponsible mining,” the activist said. “The work does not end yet because there’s a looming crisis, and we must draw a line between people having a livelihood and damaging the environment.”
President John Dramani Mahama will embark on a nationwide Thank You Tour starting this Friday, January 24, with the first stop in the Volta Region.
This tour is part of the President’s commitment to express gratitude to the people of Ghana for their unwavering support and trust in him during the 2024 general elections.
According to a statement issued by the Presidency and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Acting Spokesperson to the President, the tour will not only serve as a platform for expressing appreciation but also as an opportunity to deepen the connection between the President and the citizens of Ghana.
The Volta Region, a key stronghold of support during the elections, has been chosen as the starting point for this nationwide tour, setting the tone for what is expected to be an impactful journey.
The highlight of the Volta Region event will be a grand durbar, bringing together a diverse assembly of stakeholders and community leaders. Chiefs, queen mothers, opinion leaders, religious leaders, representatives from labour unions, and prominent figures from the informal sector are all expected to participate.
This colourful and unifying event aims to showcase the collective strength and diversity of the region while celebrating the critical role citizens have played in Ghana’s democratic and developmental journey.
The tour comes at a time when President Mahama’s leadership is being widely lauded for its decisive and progressive actions.
Within just two weeks of assuming office, President Mahama set a historic precedent by becoming the first Ghanaian leader to announce a full cabinet, signalling his readiness to deliver on campaign promises.
In the statement, the President’s Spokesperson also extended an invitation to all Ghanaians to participate in the Thank You Tour with pride and enthusiasm.
He described it as a special moment for the nation to come together and celebrate its collective achievements while reaffirming its commitment to unity and development.
Below is the statement.

Former Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), , has stated that it would be a wrong decision for President John Mahama to appoint him as Ghana’s ambassador to another country.
His comment follows President Mahama’s appointment of Nana Yaa Jantuah, a leading member of the Convention People’s Party, as a Presidential staffer.
In an interview with Joy News, , who has collaborated with the NDC while in opposition organizing demonstrations, noted that President Mahama is under no obligation to appoint
Edem Agbana, Member of Parliament for Ketu North, has expressed optimism about the future of Ghana’s road infrastructure under the leadership of Kwame Governs Agbogza, the Minister-designate for Roads and Highways.
Speaking after the vetting of the minister-designates on Monday, January 20, Agbana highlighted discrepancies in the previous administration’s claims about road construction.
He pointed out that while the former government boasted significant achievements in road networks, the vetting process revealed that less than 700 kilometres of roads had been completed, contrary to earlier assertions.
“The previous government made several claims about road infrastructure and the road networks that they constructed, but at the vetting, it was revealed that less than 700 kilometres of roads were constructed,” Agbana noted.
“It is important to place these matters on record,” he added, emphasizing the need for transparency in assessing Ghana’s road infrastructure progress.
Agbana also praised Kwame Agbogza’s qualifications, citing his experience as a ranking member in the roads sector during the previous administration. He expressed confidence in Agbodza’s ability to deliver on the government’s promises and significantly enhance the nation’s road infrastructure.
“I am confident that the honourable minister-designate will discharge his duties effectively and ensure that the road infrastructure we promised Ghanaians during President Mahama’s government is constructed,” Agbana concluded.
Ghanaian actor Prince David Osei spotted in his new look
Prince David Osei has joined the growing list of male celebrities who have recently enhanced their looks, as he has undergone a hair transplant.
He is the second Ghanaian actor to have a hair transplant, following his colleague, Harold Amenyah.
Prince David Osei’s procedure took place at a clinic in Lagos, Nigeria, which also has a branch in Ghana. Excerpts of the procedure; from start to finish, were shared on the clinic’s social media handles.
In the video, Prince David Osei, whose hairline had receded, was seen undergoing the process, from the markings on his forehead and the creation of the hairline design to the extraction process and the shaping of his new hairline.
The result of the surgery showed Prince David Osei with a perfectly outlined hairline, sparking a stir among netizens.
The actor, in an aftermath post, has shared a picture of himself ‘chilling’ in the United States, drawing mixed reactions from followers.
While some admired his new look, others criticised the decision, labeling it unnecessary and a waste of money.
The clinic where Prince David Osei underwent the procedure has also treated popular Nigerian actors such as Charles Okocha, IK Ogbonna, and Anthony Monjaro, among others.

Paul Kwabena Yandoh, the Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on all regional communication directorates of the party to visit the church of the Founder and Leader of Glorious Word Power Ministry International, Rev. Isaac Owusu-Bempah, to apologize to him and request his return to the party.
According to him, the party neglected Rev. Isaac Owusu-Bempah, who was very influential in the party’s success in 2016 and 2020, but the party turned its back on him when he had a police case.
“I was the one in the viral video apologizing to Rev. Isaac Owusu-Bempah, and I will apologize to him until… I have also told all the regional communication directors to go to his church and kneel down to beg him for forgiveness so that he can come back to the NPP.
“If you look at the politics we are doing in the country, everyone has their role to play. We go to the mallams, pastors, shrines, and all sorts of places because these people vote, so if we go to them, they will support us,” he said.
Speaking in an interview on Okay FM on January 21, 2025, he explained that the NPP had not treated the man of God fairly, and as a result, they needed to apologize for mistreating him.
“If you trace Rev. Isaac Owusu-Bempah’s prophecies, all that he has said has come to pass, especially before the 2016 elections. He said Nana Addo would win, and he did.
“In 2020, he also said Nana would win again, and he did, but in 2024, he consistently said the NPP would lose abysmally, and it still happened as he said,” he added.
Rev. Isaac Owusu-Bempah prophesied a win for the NPP in the 2016 and 2020 elections, which materialized.
However, in the 2024 general elections, he declared that the NPP would lose to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, on Monday, December 9, declared John Mahama, the NDC candidate for the 2024 general election, the winner, with a total of 6,328,397 votes.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP received 4,657,304 votes.
Mahama’s party, the NDC, achieved historic success by gaining a majority in Parliament.

A photo capturing some billionaires including Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg
A who’s who of the world’s wealthiest people surrounded President Donald Trump as he took the oath of office — gathering a combined net worth exceeding $1.3 trillion for the occasion.
Seated prominently behind the Trump family for Monday’s swearing-in were the top three individuals on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index: Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg.
Also spotted inside the Capitol Rotunda for the inaugural ceremony were LVMH Chief Executive Officer and France’s richest man, Bernard Arnault, Alphabet Inc. co-founder Sergey Brin and Las Vegas Sands Corp. majority owner Miriam Adelson.
In a telling gesture, the tech billionaires were seated in front of Trump’s nominated Cabinet. Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth had to crane past Musk and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai to watch the proceedings.
“It’s important to bring some of the brightest minds in the world together,” Donald Trump Jr. said when asked after the ceremony about the presence of tech billionaires.
The phalanx of deep-pocketed attendees highlighted a surge in support for Trump from Silicon Valley, Wall Street and other industries following his comeback victory in November’s election. At stake for many of their businesses is the promise of relief from US regulations and the hope of a boost to their corporate bottom lines from Trump’s pledge to spur investment. Others are hoping to avoid the worst of the fallout from tariffs that the president has vowed to use as an instrument of economic policy.
Embracing Trump marks a turnabout for some business leaders, who had recoiled from him four years ago following the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol by hundreds of his supporters. Yet Trump’s pariah status faded as odds increased toward his election on a business-friendly message that included an extension of tax cuts enacted in 2017 during his first term in office.
Out of all those present, Musk has put perhaps the most into Trump’s return to the White House. The Tesla Inc. CEO spent more than $200 million of his personal fortune on the president’s campaign, quickly emerging as an influential adviser to Trump and taking a role as head of a government-efficiency initiative.
Musk also has a lot at stake with the new administration, with reducing government regulation and boosting access to space contracts key for his businesses. After hearing Trump invoke plans during his inaugural address to send US astronauts to Mars, the SpaceX CEO pumped his fists in the air. Colonizing Mars has been a longtime ambition of Musk.
Present in the crowd as well were hedge fund billionaire John Paulson, conservative media mogul Rupert Murdoch and Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook, who enjoyed a cordial relationship with the president during his first term. On Sunday, during a rally at Capital One Arena on the eve of Trump’s swearing-in, Cook received a shout-out from the incoming president, who said Apple had planned an unspecified investment in the US.
The billionaires waited in line along with lawmakers and other top officials to head into a celebratory post-inaugural luncheon at the Capitol. At one point, Bezos emerged with his fiancée Lauren Sanchez. Asked for his thoughts on Trump’s speech, Bezos responded: “Oh, I don’t know, I’m looking for a restroom.”
At the luncheon, Cook was seen seated next to incoming Attorney General Pam Bondi, while Bezos sat with Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune. Republican Senator Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia got a photo of herself with Meta’s Zuckerberg.
Since the election, Zuckerberg has openly pivoted the social-media giant to align more closely with Trump and the new Republican majorities in Congress. He’s dropped a third-party fact-checking system in the US, following conservative complaints about censorship, and abandoned many of the company’s diversity and inclusion efforts.
Another closely watched guest was TikTok CEO Shou Chew, whose company’s fate rests in Trump’s hands. The president has promised to issue an executive order sparing the app from a ban that was to have taken effect on Sunday over the refusal by its Chinese parent company, ByteDance Ltd, to divest.
Trump, who initially sought to ban TikTok in his first term, has since found the social media platform to be an effective conduit to young voters and vowed to find a way to cut a deal that would keep it alive.

Renowned sports journalist Dan Kwaku Yeboah has stated that he does not know Minister-designate of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, to be someone knowledgeable in sports.
According to him, he has known Adams since his university days, when Adams was a tutor at Adisadel College and an active member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
However, Kwaku Yeboah indicated that the Member of Parliament for Buem constituency is known for his political exploits, not his involvement in the sports sector.
Speaking on Peace FM, Kwaku Yeboah asserted that Adams’ nomination came as a surprise to him.
“While I was working at ATL Radio, he [Kofi Adams] was also teaching chemistry at Adisadel College, while working for the NDC. He was a spokesperson for President Rawlings before rising to become an MP.
“However, I cannot vouch for his knowledge and expertise in sports, even though he is a competent person in what he does,” he said in Twi.
The Peace FM journalist noted that he expected former MP for Odododiodio constituency, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, to get the nod to run the sports ministry due to his experience as a sports broadcaster and administrator.
“In all honesty, my expectation was Nii Lante Vanderpuye, because he has done it before as an accomplished sports broadcaster. Since we don’t have the power to appoint, we only share our opinions. We wish Adams the best,” he added.
This comes after President John Dramani Mahama nominated Kofi Adams, as the Minister-designate of Sports and Recreation.
In a statement released on January 21, 2024, it was noted that Adams will spearhead affairs in the sports sector, as well as recreational activities.
His nomination is pending parliamentary approval after he undergoes the vetting process by the Parliamentary Appointment Committee and is duly cleared as qualified to handle the role.

P.K. Sarpong, a popular writer for the opposition NPP has asserted that if Obuasi Incident had happened under Akufo-Addo, Festus Aboagye, Kwesi Aning, Adam Bonaa, et al would have slaughtered him.
He made this comment in a post shared on his Facebook page on 22nd January, 2025. He wrote;
“Tragedy hit Obuasi, causing so much heartache and suffering to the many whose relatives perished as a result of the forceful takeover of some mines which belong to AngloGold Ashanti.
The turmoil, there is enough evidence to prove, was caused by some members of the ruling NDC who had been promised the mines, and who thought it wise to romance with death as they went toe-to-toe with armed military personnel guarding the mines.
Well-meaning Ghanaians are talking about it, the ill-meaning ones have gone completely silent. Some media outlets have taken the matter up whilst others who believe the 8 deaths, if we are to believe this figure, do not matter, have turned their eyes off the scenes in the mining city of Obuasi.
More shocking is the absence of some known voices in the media whenever incidents like these occur over the years. The experts, sadly enough, appear to have gone into hibernation.”.
He added that security experts in the shapes of Professor Kwesi Aning, Adam Bonaa, Richard Kumado, Adib Saani and Festus Aboagye, have, all of a sudden, embarked on a trip into space, far away from where radio and television signals can reach ever since Obuasi came into the picture.
“These kahunas in the security industry are not clamoring for lengthy radio and television interviews to detail how the crisis came about and who was behind it. One would ask, what is the motivation today for them to come up with their own but skewed versions of what happened?
These conspiracy theorists masquerading as security experts had one common enemy; President Akufo-Addo. In their minds, the enemy of the state, Akufo-Addo, has been retired, and for that matter, nothing incentivizes them to don their security lenses.
Festus Aboagye, Adam Bonaa, Kwesi Aning and the others have also gone on retirement because the man they loved to hate is no more. They saw evil only when Akufo-Addo was president. They now see an angel in power, so criticizing him or his party members would be a taboo.
Under Akufo-Addo, every little incident was interpreted by these ‘world’s acclaimed’ security czars as a total breakdown of security. They would term such an incident as a havoc, maelstrom, anarchy and disorder.
Incidents that happened under Akufo-Addo which were far less in terms of gravity and degree earned Akufo-Addo the ‘monster’ accolade, thanks to these same hypocritically pious elements.” He continued.
P.K. Sarpong added that when people died in Techiman after the 2020 elections, these people exaggerated the issue to paint Akufo-Addo black.
Today, Obuasi has been in the news for all the bad reasons, thanks to those hoodlums affiliated to the National Democratic Congress, but Adam Bonaa and co believe peace reigns in Obuasi and that President Mahama is as clean as a snow.
Vindication is in the womb of time. President Akufo-Addo will surely be vindicated sooner than later. He was simply crucified for sins he knew nothing about.
In the world of fashion, achieving a stylish look isn’t just about following trends; it’s about expressing individuality while maintaining a sense of sophistication. Whether you’re dressing for a casual outing, a formal event, or simply want to refresh your wardrobe, certain styles can help you stand out while looking effortlessly chic.
One of the most versatile and timeless styles is the monochrome look. By choosing a single color palette from head to toe, you create a streamlined, cohesive outfit that exudes sophistication. This approach can be as bold or as subtle as you like, from all-black ensembles to soft neutrals. The monochrome style allows for a polished look without overwhelming the senses.
For those seeking a blend of comfort and style, the athleisure trend has grown increasingly popular. Combining elements of activewear with casual fashion, athleisure pieces like sleek joggers, oversized hoodies, and stylish sneakers can be transformed into chic daywear. This style is perfect for those who want to look fashionable without sacrificing comfort.
Another fascinating style is the boho chic look, which combines relaxed, free-spirited pieces with a touch of elegance. Think flowing maxi dresses, embroidered tops, and fringe accessories. This look is ideal for those who want a laid-back yet sophisticated vibe that is perfect for festivals, summer outings, or casual brunches.
For formal occasions, the power suit is making a strong comeback. A well-tailored suit with sharp lines, paired with minimal accessories, is the perfect blend of feminine strength and style. Opting for bold colors or unique patterns can add a modern twist to the classic suit.
In conclusion, fascinating styles come in all shapes and sizes, and the key to mastering them lies in confidence and understanding what best reflects your personality. Whether it’s the minimal elegance of monochrome, the laid-back charm of boho chic, or the bold statement of a power suit, stylish looks are all about making fashion work for you.
Some cocoa farmers across the country have described the appointment of Dr. Randy Abbey as the Acting CEO of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) as unconventional.
They, however, believe his leadership could bring the transformation needed in the cocoa sub-sector.
The cocoa industry is currently confronted with challenges including diminishing production, smuggling, and pricing concerns, which stakeholders say require bold and decisive solutions.
In an interview with Citi Business News, Obed Owusu-Addai, a cocoa farmer and Co-Convener of the Ghana Civil Society Cocoa Platform, who also doubles as the Co-founder of EcoCare Ghana, expressed cautious optimism about Dr. Abbey’s appointment.
“We see the appointment of Dr. Randy Abbey as unconventional, but sometimes, an outsider brings a certain fresh perspective that is needed to drive change, and the truth is that the cocoa sector needs change,” he said.
He further stressed the importance of leadership that listens and collaborates with relevant stakeholders.
“The sector needs a bold, concise, and decisive approach, so maybe he will bring this perspective into the sector, but we will need him to be a listening CEO,” he added.
The farmers are urging the new Acting CEO to prioritize collaboration with stakeholders to address the pressing issues plaguing the industry and restore confidence in Ghana’s cocoa sector.
Meanwhile, the Cocoa farmers are calling on the newly appointed Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, to urgently implement reforms to streamline the operations of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD).
The call comes in response to growing concerns over a significant rise in administrative costs at COCOBOD, set against a backdrop of declining cocoa production.
A major reshuffle looms in Parliament as Mahama Ayariga is tipped to replace Dr. Ato Forson as Majority Leader. Rockson Dafeamekpor and Kweku Ricketts-Hagan are also expected to take up key leadership roles.
A reshuffle within the leadership of the Majority Caucus in Parliament is imminent, following the approval of Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and Governs Agbodza as ministers in President John Dramani Mahama’s government.
Mr Courage Wormenor, the National Vice President of the Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD), has said that the move by the new government to reintroduce the collection of road tolls will create some job openings for the disabled.
Mr Wormenor was responding to information provided by Mr Kwame Governs Agboza, the Minister-designate of Roads and Highways on the government’s commitment to reintroduce the collection of the road toll, when answering questions on the subject during his vetting at Parliament.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), he said, “it is good news and refreshing to hear the new government’s plans for us. Secondly, it is an avenue for job opportunities for us.”
Again, he said following the abolishment of road tolls by the past government in November 2021, most of the members of the GSPD, who were toll workers had since faced economic hardships.
“After the closure of the toll, most of our members, mainly the toll workers, are not finding things easy; some lives were lost, and others couldn’t get their money as the government promised them,” he emphasised.
He added that giving persons with physical impairment the opportunity to work and contribute to national development would help those begging for money by the roadside to change their lifestyles.
The National Vice President of the GSPD noted that such opportunities also provide the platform to transform the minds of Ghanaians to appreciate that disabled people also possess the qualities to work instead of beginning.
“The government’s effort to provide employment opportunities for us is a step in promoting inclusivity and equality.”
He said they were content to contribute their competencies and strength to the country’s workforce, noting that institutions and companies must take advantage of the five per cent tax incentive threshold for employing persons with disabilities.
Meanwhile, the Minister-designate indicated that to reduce the usual traffic that builds up at the toll booth, the reintroduction of the road toll collection might be digitalised for easy collection.
Gor Mahia midfielder Enoch Morrison has expressed concern over the exploitation of Ghanaian footballers by unscrupulous agents, urging players to be cautious when considering moves abroad. Speaking about the issue with Ghanasportspage.com.
Morrison highlighted the challenges some players face after being misled by agents, often leaving them stranded in foreign countries without support. “I can’t say anything to the agents because they will continue to do what they do, but I can speak to the players.
We need to educate footballers about these situations,” Morrison told Ghanasportspage.com. He painted a stark picture of the difficulties players encounter, sharing, “Sometimes, you wake up in the morning, and someone is already at your door asking for help to pay rent.
Unlike Ghana, where rent is paid two years in advance, here, it’s monthly. Why would you leave everything in Ghana for such hardships?”
Morrison advised players to thoroughly vet agents and ensure they have enough funds to cover their return journey if things don’t work out.
“If an agent asks you to go for a visa in Ethiopia or Kenya, make sure you have enough money to get back home in case the visa isn’t granted. Too many players get stranded in these situations,” he explained.
He also discouraged moves to certain leagues, saying, “Apart from the club I play for, which I know is a big club, I wouldn’t advise any Ghanaian player to come here and play for other teams. Even in the Premier League here, many clubs won’t pay you.”
Morrison concluded with a plea to players: “I understand we all want to succeed, but be vigilant and mindful when traveling. Don’t let desperation lead you into trouble.”
The Savannah Regional Executive Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on the police to arrest and prosecute perpetrators engaging in the destruction of party properties in the region.
“The Regional Executive Committee of the National Democratic Congress of the Savannah Region’s attention has been drawn to the unlawful acts of a group of people alleged to be NDC party supporters who were going round the township of Bole, destroying party signboards on the allegation that their favourites have not been appointed ministers of state,” parts of the statement signed by the Savannah Regional Secretary of the NDC, Salisu Be-Awuribe, read.
The NDC distanced itself from the acts and condemn in no uncertain terms such barbaric and anti-party conduc. It also indicated that it shall subject any party member who engages in such unlawful acts to the requisite party disciplinary procedures.
Mr. Be-Awuribe stated that the party has directed the Police Command to fearlessly investigate and prosecute all persons directly or remotely connected to the unlawful acts to serve as a deterrent for others who may be contemplating or harbouring such dastardly acts in future.
“We entreat all party faithfulls and the people of Ghana to remain calm and to trust in the ability of the competent President Mahama to select a team of persons he believes are better placed to help him reset the Country,” he noted.
It will be recalled that the some supporters of the NDC accused President John Dramani Mahama of neglecting the Bole/Bamboi Member of Parliament, Alhaji Yusif Sulemana, in his ministerial appointments.
In response to what they perceive as a snub, party supporters gathered outside President Mahama’s father’s residence in Bole, located in the Savannah Region, where they burnt car tires to express their dissatisfaction about the situation.
The supporters argue that Alhaji Yusif Sulemana has worked tirelessly to ensure President Mahama’s significant victory in the constituency and therefore deserves recognition and reward for his efforts.
DGN Online understands that the Bole Municipal Police Command has deployed personnel to key locations in the area to prevent any potential disturbances.
Meanwhile, the Bole/Bamboi Member of Parliament, Alhaji Yusif Sulemana, has urged the NDC supporters to remain calm in a statement.
“I kindly appeal to the youth and people of Bole/Bamboi to stay calm and refrain from any form of agitation in my name. As a loyal and devoted brother of H.E John Dramani Mahama, and a firm believer in his wisdom and experience, I wholeheartedly support his decisions,” he said.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) office at Ho in the Volta Region has been vandalized and set on fire by unidentified individuals.
The fire, which destroyed essential equipment including computers, photocopiers, and important documents, was eventually brought under control by the Ghana National Fire Service.
Preliminary reports suggest the attack may be linked to discontent over President
The Member of Parliament for North Dayi, Jocelyn Tetteh, has shared her views on how the Affirmative Action Bill empowers women parliamentarians, stressing their readiness to serve in President Mahama’s government if given the opportunity.
She highlighted the preparedness of women to serve, acknowledging that the challenges they face in securing election positions shape them to embrace any opportunity that arises once in government.
In an exclusive interview with Happy 98.9 FM on Monday, 20 January 2025, the North Dayi MP recalled her decision to enter parliament at the age of 28, stating, “I don’t think there is any task ahead of me that I wouldn’t be able to meet.” She emphasised her willingness to serve in any capacity that President Mahama deems appropriate.
When asked about the number of women appointed thus far, Madam Tetteh praised President Mahama for his progress in this area. She said, “We’re looking at 30% or more. He’s done quite well, and we expect he will appoint 30% more.”
The MP added that such appointments encourage more women to take up leadership roles, citing the current first female Vice President as an inspiration for other women aspiring to reach the highest levels of their careers.
She stated that if the President continues on the current trajectory, “by 2028, women can achieve whatever they wish for themselves.”
Madam Tetteh also discussed the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary majority, revealing that there are now 32 female MPs. She considered this a significant step forward, noting, “They fought the battle, won, and are in Parliament; that is very refreshing.”
Reflecting on her own experience, Madam Tetteh acknowledged that North Dayi is generally considered a safe seat for the NDC, but she disagreed with the notion that she faced fewer challenges than other women.
She explained that, despite the constituency’s general political leanings, personal attacks, opposition to female representation, and a lack of support at times made her journey daunting.
“You only have to encourage yourself, because no one pushed you here,” she said, adding, “Once you decide to be part of a refuse dump, you cannot prevent the vulture from making a feast out of you. So you accept whatever comes out of the challenge.”
Now in her third term, Madam Tetteh shared the difficulties she faced during her previous attempts to win the seat.
She won her first contest against two opponents, and her second contest, where her detractors brought another woman to challenge her, she won again.
Her third attempt, particularly at the primaries, was the most difficult, facing four other women and a man. She expressed pride in her role in opening doors for more women to contest and stated, “I don’t do anything to jeopardise the chances of other females.”
Turning to the Free Senior High School (SHS) Policy introduced by the New Patriotic Party, Madam Tetteh described it as a flawed policy.
She acknowledged that while it had benefitted many, there were still issues with fee payments, including PTA dues. “I have three Senior High Schools in my constituency, and I know what I’m talking about if I say the policy wasn’t entirely free,” she said.
She added that she had to buy mattresses, school bags, and even “chalewate” for some students to attend school. “Second-cycle schools are supposed to be free, yet the prospectus students take to school costs ¢6,000. How free is the Senior High School policy?” she queried, pointing out that many women in her constituency would struggle to afford such amounts for their children.
On the Affirmative Action Bill passed by the eighth Parliament, Madam Tetteh praised the legislation as a significant step forward for women.
She said, “When we’re called to the table, it won’t just be to add to numbers, but we will form an integral part of decision-making as the law establishes. It’s encouraging and gives us hope for the future.”

News Hub Creator1h
A Zoomlion worker has earned praise from many after he returned GH₵20,000 he found to its rightful owner. The worker, identified as Kwaku Mensah, discovered the large sum of money while on his regular cleaning duties. Despite the temptation, Mensah immediately reported the find to his supervisors and returned it to the owner, who had misplaced it.
The act of honesty and integrity has sparked widespread reactions on social media. Many netizens commended Mensah for his ethical behavior, noting that returning such a significant amount of money is rare in today’s society. Some expressed admiration for his sense of responsibility and honesty, while others shared their amazement, stating, “Can never be me.”
Despite the positive praise, some users shared their disbelief, questioning if they would have acted similarly in the same situation. The story has sparked a debate about morality, trust, and the value of doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. Mensah’s actions serve as a reminder of the importance of integrity, regardless of circumstance.
Some unidentified individuals, have vandalized and set ablaze the National Democratic Congress (NDC) office in Ho, the Volta Regional capital, in what is believed to be an expression of anger over President John Mahama’s ministerial appointments.
The blaze destroyed essential equipment, including computers, fans, photocopiers, and crucial documents.
Flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah, has stated that President John Mahama is not obligated to include its members in his government, despite their support in the 2024 elections.
Speaking on on Joy News on Tuesday, January 21, he made it clear that any appointment decision rests solely with the President.
“Indeed, the point is for John Mahama to determine whether he wants to appoint somebody from the PNC, the NPP, or any other place. Failing to do that, it is his burden to carry.”
According to Mr Mornah, the PNC remains a resolute political party with a clear focus on its role in national development.
He stated that their duty is to critique and support government policies when necessary, regardless of whether they are included in the administration.
“The PNC remains a resolute political party. We have a duty to critique and to support government policies and programs where the need is, and so we will continue to play our role,” he stated.
Reflecting on past administrations, Mr Mornah pointed out that PNC members had previously served in various governments, including under President John Kufuor, President John Atta Mills, and even during Mahama’s first term.
However, he stressed that the decision to appoint PNC members this time around is entirely up to Mahama and his party.
“It is not the first time a PNC member has been in government. Under President John Kufuor, PNC members served in his government; under President John Atta Mills, PNC members served; in fact, in the first term of President John Mahama, PNC members served in his government,” he noted.
Despite the PNC’s active support in ensuring the National Democratic Congress (NDC) secured victory in the 2024 elections, Mornah maintained that the PNC never sought appointments as a condition for their support.
“Obviously, the PNC took a solid decision to back the NDC to ensure that we were able to get change. But that is not to say that the NDC is under compulsion to appoint us,” he clarified.
Mr Mornah remained optimistic about the PNC’s future, stating that whether or not the party’s members are included in government, they have their strategy and plans for national development.
“If you appoint us, it is good; but if you don’t appoint us, probably, it’s even better,” he concluded, indicating that the PNC’s focus goes beyond ministerial appointments.
The African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA) has raised serious concerns over the ongoing ministerial vetting process, describing it as lacklustre and ineffective.
ACEPA claims that the conduct of both Majority and Minority members of Parliament has undermined the process, preventing nominees from being adequately scrutinised on critical national matters.
In an interview with Citi FM, Dr Rasheed Draman, Executive Director of ACEPA, called for a comprehensive reassessment of the Appointments Committee’s procedures to ensure that the vetting exercise achieves its intended purpose.
Dr Draman stressed the importance of revising the operational framework to promote a more rigorous examination of ministerial candidates.
“This process has been far from satisfactory. There is an urgent need for a thorough review of how the Appointments Committee conducts its work. Unfortunately, we observe members of Parliament, particularly from the Minority, missing the opportunity to hold nominees accountable on crucial matters,” Dr Draman stated.
He criticised the focus on irrelevant issues during the vetting process, highlighting how this approach detracts from assessing the competence, integrity, and suitability of nominees for their respective ministerial roles.
“Rather than addressing issues of competence and fitness for the ministry or department they are to lead, the Minority appears to focus on trivial matters,” he observed.
Dr Draman also expressed disappointment with the Majority’s approach, likening it to a casual and overly supportive exercise.
“For the Majority, this process seems to have become a mere friendly match. While it is understandable that they share party affiliations with the nominees, this should not excuse them from taking the process seriously,” he added.
He urged Parliament to adopt a more professional and robust vetting procedure, emphasising that the current approach does not serve the best interests of the country.

Popular Ghanaian broadcaster Okatakyie Afrifa, has embarked on a bold new chapter in his media career after parting ways with Angel TV.
He recently launched his own show, produced from the comfort of his home, where he critiques societal and political issues without fear.
The outspoken host wasted no time stirring controversy, starting his show with sharp criticism of US-based Ghanaian journalist Kevin Taylor.
Okatakyie accused Taylor of avoiding Ghana due to an outstanding arrest order against him, claiming this is the reason Taylor remains abroad to make what he described as “wild allegations.”
While some viewers have praised Okatakyie for his fearless commentary and determination to remain relevant in Ghana’s media space, others are sceptical about the sustainability of his new venture. A notable comment online read, “This thing will collapse after six months. Running a show independently is not easy.”
The unconventional setup of the show, filmed in what appears to be a casual home environment, has also drawn mixed reactions. While some find it refreshing and relatable, others argue it diminishes the professionalism associated with traditional broadcasting.
Critics have also questioned Okatakyie’s decision to focus his initial episodes on personal attacks rather than substantive issues. “If he’s going to spend his time attacking people like Kevin Taylor, this show won’t last long,” one social media user remarked.
Brother of Ghanaian music icon Stonebwoy, Elijah Satekla, has joined Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities.
The attacking midfielder signed a two-year deal to join the Ghanaian top-flight side ahead of the start of the second round of the competition.
Satekla, who decided to pursue football as his career, was recently spotted with his senior brother at a legendary football event which featured Arsenal great Emmanuel Adebayor.
He is expected to help the Ghana Premier League strugglers maintain their place in the top division after a difficult first round.
Although Legon Cities are yet to officially announce Satekla’s arrival, the Royals teased fans with a song from his elder brother on social media to give an indication of their latest signing.
Satekla becomes the fourth signing of Legon Cities in the January transfer window, joining former Kotoko winger Emmanuel Gyamfi as the latest arrival.
The University of Ghana-based outfit finished the first round on 17th position with just 14 points from 17 matches.
Ghanaians love sport. Whether it’s traditional games or emerging disciplines, we can’t get enough. While football is the undisputed national obsession, other sports like boxing, athletics, and basketball have a significant hold over the country. Meanwhile, emerging sports and even newer activities like surfing and skateboarding are beginning to carve out niches of their own.
Football

The current vetting of ministerial nominees has drawn criticism from the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), which has called it inadequate.
ACEPA argues that the behavior of both sides of Parliament has slowed down the process and prevented nominees from being thoroughly questioned on important national issues.
ACEPA Executive Director Dr. Rasheed Draman urged a review of the Appointments Committee’s methodology to ensure that the screening procedure achieves its goals.
Dr. Draman asserted that, in order to improve the Appointments Committee’s efficacy, its operational framework needs to be reviewed. He continued that the current approach does not allow for the rigorous examination of nominees on pressing matters affecting the country.
“I think this process has been very unsatisfactory. There is a need for some serious rethinking about how the Appointments Committee conducts its business. We see, first of all, Members of Parliament, particularly those from the Minority, missing a very important opportunity to hold nominees accountable.
“They focus on trivial issues, which do not speak to the competence, integrity, and suitability of the person for the ministry or department they are to lead.
“On the side of the Majority, I think they have turned this whole process into some kind of friendly match. I mean, it is their colleagues from the same party, but I think we still have to take this business very seriously,” citinewsroom.com quoted Dr. Draman to have said in a statement.
ACEPA’s comments come after the vetting procedure was publicly criticized, with many observers calling on Parliament to prioritize substance over party interests during these important discussions.

Francis Asenso-Boakye, former minister for Roads and Highways
Francis Asenso-Boakye a former minister for Roads and Highways, has rejected assertions by Roads and Highways minister-designate, Kwame Governs Agbodza, regarding the scope of road construction under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Asenso-Boakye contested Agbodza’s claim that only 673 kilometres of new roads were constructed during the previous government’s eight-year tenure.
“Honorable Speaker, let me put on record that as of December 2024, per the transition report, the Akufo-Addo government had constructed 13,624 kilometres of road. This figure is significantly higher than the 4,630 kilometres constructed by the previous government over eight years,” citinewsroom.com quoted him to have said.
The Bantama Member of Parliament described the 13,624 kilometres as a record-breaking achievement, emphasizing that the total included various road infrastructure projects, such as asphalt overlays, gravelling, reconstruction, and the construction of bridges.
Asenso-Boakye argued that Agbodza’s focus on the 673 kilometres of newly constructed roads was misleading and failed to reflect the broader scope of work undertaken by the Akufo-Addo administration.
He underscored that while constructing new roads was important, other aspects like asphalt overlays and gravelling played a crucial role in improving the nation’s road network.
“Many of us represent rural communities and understand the importance of gravelling in linking people and improving accessibility in these areas. These projects are crucial and cannot be dismissed simply because they are not classified as new road constructions,” he remarked.
The former minister further outlined the administration’s efforts in road reconstruction and upgrades, revealing that 1,665 kilometres were rebuilt or improved during the eight-year tenure.

Former Minister for Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has strongly refuted claims by Roads and Highways Minister-designate, Kwame Governs Agbodza, that the Akufo-Addo administration constructed only 673 kilometres of new roads during its eight-year tenure.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Asenso-Boakye accused Agbodza of misrepresenting the facts and emphasized that the Akufo-Addo government constructed a total of 13,624 kilometres of roads between 2017 and 2025.
“Honorable Speaker, let me put on record that as of December 2024, per the transition report, the Akufo-Addo government had constructed 13,624 kilometres of road. This figure is against the 4,630 kilometres of road constructed by the previous government in eight years,” Asenso-Boakye said.
He insisted that the total road network completed under the Akufo-Addo administration was a record-breaking achievement and included significant components such as asphalt overlays, gravelling, reconstruction, and bridges.
The Bantama MP argued that Agbodza had deliberately focused on only the 673 kilometres of newly constructed roads to paint a misleading picture of the government’s performance. He explained that while new road construction was a key aspect of the administration’s efforts, other critical components such as asphalt overlays and re-graveling were equally significant.
He cited examples of asphalt overlay projects in Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani, and Takoradi that improved road quality and facilitated transportation.
Asenso-Boakye also highlighted the importance of gravelling, noting that approximately 6,000 kilometres of gravel roads were completed under Akufo-Addo’s leadership emphasizing the value of these projects, particularly in rural areas, where improved road networks are essential for connecting communities and enhancing accessibility.
He further noted that 1,665 kilometres of roads were reconstructed and upgraded, and 35 bridges were constructed nationwide during the NPP government’s tenure. These, he said, were all part of the administration’s transformative infrastructure agenda.
“Many of us represent rural communities and understand the importance of gravelling in linking people and improving accessibility in these areas. These projects are crucial and cannot be dismissed simply because they are not new road constructions,” he remarked.
This, he called on Parliament and the public to recognize the comprehensive nature of road infrastructure development undertaken during the NPP government’s tenure, noting that maintenance and upgrades are integral to a robust national road network.
NPP constructed only 673km of new roads, not 11,000km – Agbodza
