Kofi Adams Pledges to Revolutionize Ghana’s Sports Landscape

Ghana’s Minister Designate for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has promised to overhaul the country’s sports sector, with an ambitious vision that moves beyond football to include all sports disciplines.

Set to succeed Mustapha Yussif, Adams aims to reshape the sports landscape in Ghana, ensuring that a more holistic approach is taken, one that supports and develops sports beyond the Black Stars, the nation’s iconic football team.

In a recent interview on GHOne TV, Adams made it clear that the focus on football as the sole recipient of government support was over. “Sports is not football; sports is not Black Stars,” he declared, emphasizing that his role as the sports minister would extend to overseeing all federations and associations, including Black Queens, badminton, and more. He stressed the importance of offering leadership to various sports bodies to help them succeed, not just focusing on the Black Stars.

This shift in focus is welcomed by athletes and enthusiasts from other disciplines who have long felt sidelined. Adams believes that a thriving sports ecosystem requires investment across the board, allowing athletes from different fields to reach their potential, foster a culture of excellence, and build national pride.

While acknowledging football’s central role in Ghanaian culture, Adams stressed the need for a balanced development of all sports. “I know that football is the nation’s love, and so you don’t reduce your attention on what the nation loves, but you develop all other ones because everything must be developed holistically,” he said.

As Adams prepares to take on the responsibilities of his new role, he faces the challenge of creating an inclusive sports environment that benefits every discipline. With his commitment to equitable support for all sports, he hopes to leave a lasting impact on the country’s sporting future. The 49-year-old will undergo vetting before officially assuming his duties, and all eyes will be on him as he sets out to fulfill his vision.

You have the ultimate prize – Kwakye Ofosu tells Bole-Bamboi youth

0

Acting Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has urged National Democratic Congress (NDC) rioting youth in the Bole-Bamboi constituency to exercise restraint.

Some irate youth on Tuesday reportedly burnt car tyres at the residence of President John Dramani Mahama’s father over their MP, Yusif Sulemana’s snub in the ministerial appointments.

However, Mr. Ofosu has admonished that constituents must pride themselves in the fact that President Mahama is an indigene of the land.

In an interview on Asempa FM Ekosii Sen, the Abura Asebu Kwamankese MP stated that was an ultimate prize they must cherish.

He acknowledged that the expectations on regional balance in the appointments are high but all demands can be met and satisfied.

“Sometimes you will try everything possible but a certain dynamic will come up that you will not fulfil it like in the case of the Bole people.

“I can understand that the MP is serving his fourth term and has contributed his part but the people are not focusing on the fact that they have the ultimate prize. The President is from Bole,” he said.

To him, an appointee’s background or hometown do not really matter but their competence.

Man admits murdering mum and daughters

0

A man has admitted murdering his ex-girlfriend and her sister with a crossbow and their mother with a knife in an attack at the family home.

Carol Hunt, 61, was stabbed to death and Hannah Hunt, 28, and Louise Hunt, 25, suffered fatal crossbow bolt injuries in Bushey, near Watford, on 9 July.

Kyle Clifford, 26, from Enfield, north London, changed his not guilty pleas to the murders during an appearance via video link at Cambridge Crown Court.

The three women were the wife and daughters of BBC racing commentator John Hunt, and Louise was a former partner of the killer, who has denied a charge of rape.

Clifford, of Rendlesham Road, changed his pleas having denied murdering the three women during a hearing at the same court in December.

He has also now pleaded guilty to false imprisonment and possession of an offensive weapon.

Hertfordshire Police had been called by Hannah Hunt, who told officers she feared she was going to die as she had been shot and her sister and mother had also been attacked.

The 28-year-old was found in the main doorway of the house on Ashlyn Close and was still alive when officers arrived at about 19:10 BST.

Louise Hunt’s arms and ankles had been tied with duct tape and she had been shot by a crossbow.

Carol Hunt had stab wounds to her knee, hands, back and torso.

The attacks in the cul-de-sac sparked a manhunt which ended with Clifford being found injured in Lavender Hill Cemetery in Enfield.

Clifford, who served in the military from 2019 for about three years, was taken to hospital as he had shot himself in the chest with the crossbow.

During the court hearing where he admitted the murders, Clifford denied a charge of rape in connection to Louise Hunt and he is due to stand trial on that charge at the same court later this year.

Mr Hunt and his other daughter Amy previously issued a statement following the incident, which said: “The devastation we are experiencing cannot be put into words.”

I Will Not Attend My Late Mother’s One Week Or Funeral – Content Creator Osanju Explains Why

0

Popular Ghanaian content creator, Osanju, has sparked a debate on social media following his revelation that he will not attend his late mother’s one-week observation or funeral.

The digital sensation explained his decision in a recent interview, citing his personal beliefs as the reason behind his absence from these traditional rites.

According to Osanju, his faith and principles do not align with participating in such ceremonies, even though it means not bidding farewell to his beloved mother in the conventional sense.

“My beliefs prevent me from attending the one-week or funeral of my mother,” he said, standing firm on his convictions despite the public backlash.

The announcement has since triggered mixed reactions among Ghanaians. While some applauded his courage to stay true to his beliefs, others expressed shock and disapproval, questioning why he would choose a belief system that seemingly conflicts with showing his final respects to his late mother.

. “No matter your beliefs, a mother’s funeral is sacred. It’s the least you can do to honour her life. That is your only opportunity to say your final goodbyes to her.” one social media user commented.

Media coalition demands renewed fight against galamsey after Obuasi Clash

0

The Media Coalition Against Galamsey is calling for a renewed fight against illegal mining activities following the deadly clash at AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Mines.

The clash, which resulted in multiple fatalities, highlights the worsening situation of illegal mining, which has caused significant pollution to Ghana’s water bodies and destroyed vegetation. The Coalition is concerned that efforts to combat these activities have diminished.

Convenor of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, Kenneth Ashigbey, emphasized the need for decisive action to prevent such incidents in mining areas.

“We’ve asked that he issues a cease and desist order so that these illegal and irresponsible miners would realize that there’s a president in charge. Not only should the government act but the citizens should not be spectators…those put in authority should work together to ensure that the plethora of solutions that have been professed. So we need this multidimensional approach to deal with this wicked problem,” he stated.

Ashigbey also expressed concern that the government has not prioritized the fight against illegal mining, which has led to waning advocacy on the issue. “Because of the seeming silence when power changed over, we’ve heard the President act swiftly towards various national issues (ORAL, MMDCEs, surrendering state properties, etc.) but we can’t say the same for the fight against galamsey even though they signed the pact against galamsey through the media coalition,” he added.

The Coalition condemned the actions of the illegal miners involved in the attack on military personnel, calling it a criminal act. “We also know that the military also has their standard procedures, no military man who is working according to the rules they have will shoot at people who have surrendered, but the military will have to defend themselves when they are being attacked,” Ashigbey said.

He supported the President’s call for a probe into the incident, urging that perpetrators be held accountable. “We support the President’s call for an investigation and we hope it will be an independent investigation to ascertain what the truth is, and the punishment that has to be exacted to culprits should be done irrespective of who is involved,” he emphasized.

Ashigbey also suggested that involving traditional leaders is key to strengthening the fight against galamsey and the frequent attacks on mining sites.

“We need to harness the power of our traditional leaders as well and so we must bring our chiefs, queen mothers, and traditional priests into the whole issue of the governance around the mining process…Our subregion has had that preponderance of people attacking legal mines and it’s something we have to deal with,” he stated.

Kenya eases travel requirements for nearly all African visitors

0

The ETA fee is $30 (£24) and valid for 90 days The ETA fee is $30 (£24) and valid for 90 days

Kenya will allow citizens of nearly all African countries to visit without needing prior authorisation, according to a new directive by the cabinet.

Last year, Kenya introduced a “visa-free” policy that required most visitors to apply online for authorisation before leaving their country.

However the introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), which replaced the visa requirement for all visitors, was criticised as a “visa under another name”.

On Tuesday, a cabinet statement said the ETA would be dropped for “all African countries except Somalia and Libya – due to security concerns”.

It said this was part of “efforts to support open skies policies and tourism growth” and “promote regional integration and ease travel across the continent”.

Despite introducing the ETA, Kenya fared worse in the latest ranking of how open it is to visitors, dropping 17 places to 46th out of 54 nations in the 2024 Africa Visa Openness Index.

Several African countries have tried to ease travel requirements for visitors from elsewhere on the continent in recent years, with studies showing it is often easier for citizens of Western countries to visit.

Earlier this year, Ghana said all African passport holders would now be able to visit without needing a visa. African visitors to Rwanda also do not need a visa to enter the country.

The move to facilitate travel within the continent is also being pushed by the African Union (AU).

Under the updated system, citizens of most African countries will be allowed to enter Kenya and stay ETA-free for up to two months.

Members of the East African Community, which include Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi, can however stay for up to six months in line with the bloc’s policy.

Kenya also says it will introduce an enhanced process “allowing travellers to receive approval instantly” and a maximum processing time of 72 hours.

It is not clear when this will take effect. Several ministries have been tasked to propose guidelines within a week to improve “travellers experience at all Kenyan airports”, according to the cabinet statement.

Before the introduction of the ETA, visitors from more than 40 countries including several from Africa, were able to arrive in Kenya, get a stamp in their passport and enter without paying anything.

All travellers must now apply and pay for an ETA at least three days before their trip to Kenya, unless they are citizens of an exempted country.

The ETA fee is $30 (£24) and valid for 90 days.

The policy has faced criticism with some noting that it could make it more difficult for potential visitors to come to the country.

Kenya has indicated there was a security element to the introduction of the new system, with the government spokesman telling the BBC last year that it was necessary for vetting travellers.

The country has been targeted by al-Shabab jihadist militants from neighbouring Somalia in several notorious attacks.

On Tuesday, the government said it was also introducing a system that would enhance “pre-screening, strengthen security, and streamline passenger processing at entry points”.

Not everyone can be a minister – Kofi Adams

Member of Parliament for Buem and Minister of Sports and Recreation-designate, Kofi Adams Member of Parliament for Buem and Minister of Sports and Recreation-designate, Kofi Adams

Member of Parliament for Buem, Kofi Adams, has urged members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the general public to temper expectations regarding ministerial appointments as the party commits to its promise of a lean government.

Speaking on GHOne TV’s Hard Talk, Adams emphasised that the party’s manifesto pledge to govern with just 60 ministers must be upheld, even if it results in disappointment for some party members.

“One of the issues we campaigned on was that we’re going to have a lean government and that we’re going to work with 60 ministers. All of us went out with it,” Adams stated.

He explained that the party’s goal is to operate efficiently within the constitutional framework while ensuring broad-based representation in governance.

Adams acknowledged that the NDC, with 183 parliamentary seats secured so far and legal battles ongoing for additional seats, cannot appoint all MPs to ministerial roles.

“Even if they decided to take all the 60 [ministers] from parliament, not all of us will get. So you must understand that having campaigned on a certain promise, that promise must be kept. Surely, some would be disappointed, and some would be appointed.”

Deal with food inflation to stabilize Ghana’s economy – Edward Kareweh to government

0

Inflation continues to rise in recent times Inflation continues to rise in recent times

Edward Kareweh, the former General Secretary of the General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU), has called for coordinated policy efforts among key ministries to address the structural challenges facing Ghana’s agricultural sector.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Kareweh emphasised the need for effective collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture and other governmental bodies to enhance production, reduce food inflation, and tackle post-harvest losses.

According to Kareweh, the disconnect between production strategies and trade policies has hindered the sector’s growth.

He highlighted that increased agricultural production without a functional market often leads to a surplus, which results in post-harvest losses and financial setbacks for farmers.

“Before you produce, there must be a market particularly if it is not only for consumption but also for trade. The lack of a functional market remains a major challenge for agricultural production in Ghana,” he stated.

Kareweh suggested that reducing imports in specific food categories, such as maize, would create market opportunities for locally produced goods.

He also advocated for the establishment of processing facilities near farm gates as a practical solution to minimize losses and boost market efficiency.

The former GAWU leader acknowledged the government’s recent emphasis on agribusiness as a distinct policy focus under the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

He expressed cautious optimism about this move, noting that the Ministry of Agriculture’s historical performance has been less than satisfactory despite its technical infrastructure.

Kareweh argued that the Ministry of Agriculture should undergo significant restructuring to address longstanding administrative inefficiencies.

“The Ministry of Agriculture needs to be restructured. There are serious administrative and bureaucratic bottlenecks that must be addressed. It is like a leaking bucket—you must mend the leaks before pouring in more water,” he said.

He further pointed out the ministry’s failure to deliver on flagship programs such as Planting for Food and Jobs, questioning its ability to manage large-scale agribusiness initiatives effectively.

Kareweh also linked the country’s persistent food inflation to inefficiencies in the agricultural sector. Citing consistent data from the Ghana Statistical Service, he noted that food inflation is a major driver of national inflation.

He stressed that reducing food inflation requires a coordinated approach involving the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture, and Ministry of Trade to ensure that policies are synergized and targeted.

“The government must address food inflation without creating risks like post-harvest losses. This requires a collective effort to stabilize the economy and make food affordable for consumers,” he added.

Kareweh urged the government to prioritize policy alignment and foster collaboration between agriculture and trade to create a sustainable agricultural ecosystem.

He called for pragmatic solutions that go beyond policy declarations, emphasizing the importance of implementation.

With post-harvest losses, inflation, and market inefficiencies continuing to affect the sector, Kareweh’s remarks serve as a timely call to action for policymakers to adopt a holistic approach in addressing Ghana’s agricultural challenges.

Supreme Court rules on owner of Katamanso lands

0

The Supreme Court has determined the rightful owner of 2,911.53 acres of land at Katamanso The Supreme Court has determined the rightful owner of 2,911.53 acres of land at Katamanso

The Supreme Court of Ghana has unanimously affirmed Agri-Cattle Lakeside Estate Ltd as the rightful owner of 2,911.53 acres of land at Katamanso in the Greater Accra Region.

The landmark ruling by a five-member panel, led by Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, validates the company’s ownership based on Land Title Certificate No. TD 0513, issued from a grant by the Nungua Stool.

The case was initiated by Tassah Tapha Tassah, who claimed to have acquired the land in 2004 through a 99-year lease from the Kplen We Family of La, Accra.

Tassah stated that his search at the Lands Commission in 2008 revealed the land was registered to Land and Housing Ltd, prompting him to regularise his acquisition by attorning tenancy to the registered owner.

However, in 2013, Tassah discovered that Agri-Cattle Lakeside Estate held an undisputed title to the land since 1974 and had sold portions to third parties.

Despite asserting that he was a bona fide purchaser without notice of prior ownership, Tassah’s claims were dismissed by the High Court, a decision now upheld by the Supreme Court.

Historical context

Agri-Cattle Lakeside Estate Ltd acquired the land in 1974 through an assignment from Black Watch Cattle Breeding Farms.

The company formalised its title with a 50-year lease from the Nungua Stool in 1995, subsequently registering the land under Land Title Certificate No. TD 0513.

The estate has since sold portions of the land to third parties, reinforcing its longstanding ownership.

Legal Journey

The High Court ruled against Tassah, citing his failure to conduct adequate due diligence before purchasing the land.

The court rejected his claim of protection under the equity principle of a bona fide purchaser for value without notice, which safeguards buyers unaware of competing ownership claims.

Unhappy with the High Court’s decision, Tassah appealed to the Court of Appeal, which ruled in his favor on March 30, 2023.

The appellate court found that Tassah had taken reasonable steps to investigate the title and deserved protection as a bona fide purchaser.

Dissatisfied, Agri-Cattle Lakeside Estate escalated the matter to the Supreme Court.

The apex court reversed the appellate decision, emphasising that Tassah’s 2008 search at the Lands Commission clearly indicated the land was owned by Agri-Cattle Lakeside Estate.

The court also clarified that confusion over name changes — such as the transition from Agric Cattle Limited to Agri-Cattle Lakeside Estate — did not invalidate the company’s ownership.

A Victory for Justice

Dr. Prince-Joseph M. K. Ayiku, Managing Director of Agri-Cattle Lakeside Estate Ltd, described the judgment as a triumph of justice and a reaffirmation of the company’s commitment to delivering quality housing solutions.

The ruling brings closure to a protracted legal battle.

Junta-led Sahel states ready joint force of 5,000 troops, says minister

0

A joint force of 5,000 troops from military-led neighbours Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali will soon deploy in their troubled central Sahel region, Niger’s defence chief said on state television.

Juntas in the neighbouring West African countries seized control in a series of coups between 2020 and 2023. Last year, they agreed to tackle security threats jointly after severing long-standing military and diplomatic ties with regional allies, France, and other Western powers.

Niger Defence Minister Salifou Mody said the new force would have its own air assets, equipment, and intelligence resources and operate across the territory of the three nations, which have formed a cooperation pact known as the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

“The unified AES force is nearly ready, numbering 5,000 personnel,” Mody said on Tuesday.
“It’s only a matter of weeks before this force will be visible on the ground,” he said, adding that some joint operations had already taken place.

Violence fuelled by a decade-long fight with Islamist groups linked to Al Qaeda and Islamic State has worsened since the coups. Around 2.6 million people were displaced within the region as of December, according to the U.N. humanitarian agency OCHA.

The creation of the three-way alliance followed the countries’ decision to withdraw from West Africa’s main political and economic group ECOWAS, which is still pushing them to reconsider the move that reverses decades of broader regional integration.
