It’s sustainable to subsidise premix fuel

0

Emelia Arthur, the Minister-Designate for Fisheries and Aquaculture, has emphasized the importance of subsidising premix fuel for fisherfolk as a key strategy to ensure the growth and sustainability of the fishing sector.

Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 22, Emelia Arthur affirmed her commitment to the subsidy programme, confidently responding to questions about its viability with, “Yes, Mr. Chairman.”

She pledged to work diligently to ensure that subsidised premix fuel is delivered promptly and efficiently to fisherfolk across the country.

The premix fuel subsidy programme, which aims to support the fisheries sector and improve the welfare of fishing communities, has faced criticism for inefficiencies and allegations of corruption.

Concerns such as the diversion of subsidised fuel to alternative markets, overpricing, and hoarding have led to accusations that cartels and political cronies, rather than the intended beneficiaries, are profiting from the program.

In light of these challenges, stakeholders have called for a review of the program, with suggestions to shift to an output subsidy model to enhance efficiency, productivity, and fairness for fishermen while addressing the systemic issues currently undermining the programme’s effectiveness.

Eradicating violence is key to Ghana’s development

0

Minister-Designate for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has emphasized the urgent need to eliminate violence from national development, asserting that violence has no place in the Ghana he envisions.

Speaking during his vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 22, 2025, Opare-Addo linked the prevalence of violence to rising unemployment among the youth, warning that failure to address this challenge poses a significant threat to the country’s stability.

“Violence has no place in the Ghana that I want. Violence has no space in national development, so nobody should subscribe to it,” he stated.

He pledged to work closely with relevant agencies and engage young people to create sustainable jobs. “If we don’t address the challenge of unemployment, we will always have this issue of violence staring us in the face,” he added.

Opare Addo also highlighted the crucial role of young people in shaping Ghana’s future, advocating for their active participation and a focus on reorienting their mindset.

“The Ghana we want requires active participation of the youth, who constitute the majority of the Ghanaian population. Resetting Ghana means total re-engagement—that is, reorienting their minds, engaging them, and building for all of us a Ghana that we will be proud of,” he said.

To tackle the root causes of youth unrest, he committed to providing skill training and sustainable employment opportunities. “If I have a job in the morning and you call me to come anywhere, there’s no way I will follow you. We will aggressively tackle unemployment by rendering skill training to those willing to work and change the narrative, so post-election violence does not continue.”

Opare Addo’s vision reflects his determination to empower Ghanaian youth, eradicate violence, and build a nation where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. He called on all stakeholders to join him in creating a future where young people are equipped to contribute meaningfully to the country’s development.

Otto Addo retained as Black Stars coach

0

Chairman of the Management Committee of the Black Stars, Dr Randy Abbey Chairman of the Management Committee of the Black Stars, Dr Randy Abbey

The Chairman of the Management Committee of the Black Stars, Dr Randy Abbey has confirmed the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) decision to retain Otto Addo as the Black Stars coach.

Dr. Abbey explained that the GFA made this decision in an attempt to maintain stability and avoid a change in leadership that could impact Ghana’s World Cup qualification hopes.

He assured that the FA, along with the management committee, will work to turn around the team’s fortunes and get them back to winning ways.

“We think the GFA has made its decision already,” Abbey told Original FM.

“The GFA are keeping Otto Addo. Right now, the focus is on the World Cup qualifiers. We will be ensuring that we reverse the poor trend of results that led to the team’s failure to qualify for AFCON. We need to change course and put the Black Stars back on the winning path.”

Otto Addo’s future was in doubt after failing to secure Ghana’s qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The German-trained coach managed to secure just three points in six games, recording three losses and three draws.

In the TikTok video, Afia took a jab at the station, claiming that Nana Aba Anamoah was fired from TV3 for misconduct before moving on to a better offer at EIB Network under Bola Ray.

Speaking after the swearing-in of six newly appointed ministers at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, January 22, the President reiterated sentiments from his inaugural address, stressing that his administration has a duty to meet the high expectations of the citizens who entrusted them with power.

GJA demands update on Suale’s murder investigation by March 2025

0

By Eunice Hilda A. Mensah

Accra, Jan.22, GNA – The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) is demanding a concrete update on the investigation in the murder case of Ahmed Suale, an Investigative Journalist, latest by the end of March 2025.

“If by the end of March 2025, we have not seen or heard satisfactory reaction to our demand, we shall proceed to the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice to seek resolution of this matter,” Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, GJA President said at a news conference in Accra on Wednesday.

He said it was very unfortunate and disappointing that six years after the murder of Ahmed Suale, no arrest had been made.

“What is even more disheartening is the lackadaisical police investigations into the murder. You may recall the shocking disclosure made by the former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, in February 2024 that his office had not received from the Police any docket fit for prosecution or action on the murder of Ahmed Suale. This was five years after the murder of the investigative journalist.

“Just last week, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare-Obeng, popularly called A-Plus, publicly indicated that he had given information to the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) regarding the suspected killers of Ahmed Suale.

He went further to threaten that if the Police did not come public with investigations into the killing, he would be compelled to publish the name of the suspect he submitted to the Police.

The comments made by A-Plus have raised many questions that cast doubt on the willingness of the Police to resolve this matter,” he said.

Mr Dwumour noted that the GJA also intended to take the case of Latif Iddrisu, formerly of Multimedia, to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice if nothing concrete came from the Police by the end of March 2025.

Latif was brutally assaulted by unidentified police officers at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department while covering a demonstration by some supporters of the National Democratic Congress.

The assault damaged his skull and since then, he has been battling for life.

However, six years after the incident, the GJA President said police investigations had been rather tardy.

“The Police claim they do not have or cannot find evidence for prosecution. They further claim the CCTV at the crime scene was faulty on that fateful day Latif was assaulted. The Police are saying since crime has no expiry date, anytime or day they would find evidence, they would initiate prosecution. We shall proceed to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice to hear what they will also say on this case,” he added.

He urged the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice-designate and the President to take keen interest in the case.

Mr Kofi Yeboah, the General Secretary, GJA, said the Association did not appreciate the response from the Police, hence the need to go to the Ecowas court should the need arose.

The Association, he said, had been well advised legally and would leave the matter in the hands of the Ecowas court if the matter failed to be handled rightfully and as expected by the authorities concerned.

Mr Omar Faruk Osman, the President of the Federation of African Journalists, said the Federation was watching closely the unjust attacks on journalists especially regarding the murder of Ahmed Suale and believed in the need for justice to prevail.

He said the Federation stood in full support of GJA to speak against impunity, adding that it would not hesitate to take the matter to international forums and international court of Justice and the UN Council if the Police failed to bring justice to Ahmed Suale, his family and all journalists.

President swears in first batch of six ministers, charges them to serve in humility

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, Jan 22, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has sworn-in the first batch of six ministers of his government, with a charge to them to serve in humility and candour.

He charged them to always remember that the authority they exercised emanated from the people, hence they should serve the Ghanaian people in dignity.

The ministers who took the oaths of allegiance, office and secrecy include Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, Finance Minister, Mr John Abu Jinapor, Minister of Energy and Green Transition, and Dr Dominic Akurutinga Ayine, Attorney General and Minister of Justice.

The rest are Mr Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Education, Mr Eric Opoku, Minister of Food and Agriculture and Mr Kwame Agbodza, Minister of Roads and Highways.

President Mahama, who presented the instrument of office to the ministers, advised them to exhibit tolerance to public demands and work to meet the aspirations of Ghanaians.

“This government will not tolerate arrogance or disrespect for the people who elected us into office,” President Mahama said.

“Modesty and prudence must be the guiding principle upon which you, myself, and our Vice President, fashion our governance.”

“The people of Ghana will hold us accountable for the trust that they have placed in our hands. It cannot be business as usual. We must be transparent and fair in all our dealings.”

Touching on the economy, he said the people of Ghana were looking up to Dr Forson to reduce inflation and make life more affordable, reduce the cost of living, and bring the national debt to sustainable levels.

“They’re looking to you to stabilise our currency, and they’re looking to you to rein in the deficit so that we can achieve macroeconomic stability,” the President said.

To Minister of Energy, Mr Jinapor, the President said Ghanaians were expecting a stable and efficient power supply.

“They’re looking to you to accelerate our upstream and downstream petroleum sectors in order that Ghanaians can reap the benefit of the potential that God has given us,” he said.

“They’re also looking to you to manage the energy sector debt and be able to remove it as an albatross around the neck of our economy.”

To Mr Opoku, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, the President said Ghanaians wanted food security, which should ensure availability and affordability of food.

To Mr Governs Kwame Agbodza, the Minister of Roads and Highways, President Mahama noted that he probably had one of the most difficult jobs, saying: “Everybody in Ghana is complaining about bad roads”.

“You have the duty not only to maintain existing roads, but to provide new roads for smooth transportation.”

He said the education sector was one of the most difficult and complex, and so Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the Education Minister, was supposed to work to ensure quality education and provision of skills to youth to gain employment.

“Your first responsibilities would be to superintend the National Review Conference on Education to bring stakeholders together to dialogue on how to improve the nation’s educational outcomes,” the President said.

To Mr Ayine, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, President Mahama said he would be required to reform the nation’s justice system, to make it fair and transparent to all Ghanaians.

He would be responsible for holding people accountable and making sure that the sword of justice went after people who had misappropriated the resources of Ghanaians.

“One of the major tasks you will have to undertake is to shepherd the National Constitutional Validation Conference in order that we can begin amendments of our Constitution to make it a living document for the future,” President Mahama said.

Dr Forson, on behalf of his colleagues, expressed gratitude to the President for the honour done them.

“We want to assure you that we will serve in such a way to make you the best President in the Fourth Republic.”

In attendance was Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

Providing alternative livelihood key to ending galamsey

0

George Opare Addo, the Minister-Designate for Youth Development and Empowerment, has emphasized the critical need to provide alternative livelihoods to residents in mining areas as a sustainable solution to the issue of illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey.”

During his appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Opare Addo, widely known as Pablo, highlighted the necessity for a shift in mindset and the adoption of sustainable mining practices to protect the environment.

He noted that poverty in mining communities often drives residents to engage in illegal mining activities. Addressing this issue is essential to solving the galamsey problem.

To tackle the root causes of illegal mining, Opare Addo advocates for the implementation of alternative livelihood programs aimed at reducing poverty and providing sustainable employment opportunities.

By focusing on these initiatives, he believes that communities can transition from illegal mining to more sustainable economic activities, thereby preserving the environment and promoting long-term development.

“There is a Ghana we all want. I want a Ghana where illegal mining is not a part of but we do mining in a manner which is sustainable and won’t degrade the environment in any way. I believe that is also the vision of John Dramani Mahama.

“For young people who want to go into mining, we have to reset their minds. There is an old way that they have done things and they must re-engage them to change them from the old way they have done things.

“We are going to work together with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to look at sustainable ways of mining. I have maintained that wherever there is gold and there is poverty, people will find a way of getting under the ground to find the gold.

“We must eradicate poverty from the areas we find ourselves and if we have been able to do that effectively, by giving them alternative livelihood we may bring an end to illegal mining,” he said.

If Obuasi had happened under Akufo-Addo, Festus Aboagye, Kwesi Aning, Adam Bonaa, et al would have slaughtered him

0

Tragedy hit Obuasi, causing so much heartache and suffering to the many whose relatives perished as a result of the forceful takeover of some mines which belong to AngloGold Ashanti.

The turmoil, there is enough evidence to prove, was caused by some members of the ruling NDC who had been promised the mines, and who thought it wise to romance with death as they went toe-to-toe with armed military personnel guarding the mines.

Let’s review District Assemblies Act to support creative industry – Abla Gomashie

0

The Minister-Designate for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has called for a comprehensive review of the District Assemblies Act to help revitalise the Centre for National Culture (CNC) across the country.

Speaking during her vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Wednesday, January 22, Gomashie stressed that empowering the CNC through a revised legal framework would provide a vital platform for young talents to thrive while preserving Ghana’s rich cultural heritage.

“The District Assemblies Act should be reviewed to revive the Centre for National Culture in all areas across the country. The district assemblies have the opportunity to develop their communities, and I will be happy to work with them,” she stated.

According to her, the CNC holds immense potential for nurturing creative talent, describing it as a “low-hanging fruit” that could transform the lives of young, talented Ghanaians while significantly contributing to national development.

She emphasised that amending the District Assemblies Act would give local governments a stronger mandate to invest in cultural institutions like the CNC, which she described as a cornerstone for decentralising cultural and creative arts development in Ghana.

“The Centre for National Culture is an area that has the potential to create opportunities for young people who are talented and creative to take advantage of,” Gomashie added, underscoring her vision to ensure the creative arts sector becomes a robust contributor to Ghana’s economy.

Kofi Adams Takes Over Ministry of Sports and Recreation Amid Calls for Reform

0

Ksi Sports Match Fans
Ksi Sports Match Fans

Ghana’s sports fans now have an answer to the ongoing question of who will manage the rebranded Ministry of Sports and Recreation, long known for its controversies and challenges.

Kofi Adams, the president’s nominee for the post, will have his hands full, taking over a ministry that has been frequently criticized for inefficiency, lack of proper oversight, and mismanagement. As a Member of Parliament for Buen and a self-proclaimed boxing enthusiast, Adams is entering the role at a time of heightened scrutiny and expectations.

Adams takes over from Mustapha Hamid, whose tenure was marred by significant criticisms, notably a lack of proper supervision of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and a chaotic African Games, which is still under investigation. These challenges mean that Adams must swiftly address the issues plaguing Ghana’s sports sector.

Sports pundit Sitsofe Atsrim has called on the new minister to focus on the fundamentals and put efforts into revamping sports education in Ghana. “It’s important to fix the college for sports,” Atsrim said, emphasizing that the state of Ghanaian sports is currently at a low point. “There isn’t any quick fix to it. It needs an open-heart surgery that should be the priority,” he stressed. Many have echoed this sentiment, urging a strategic overhaul of the system that can provide lasting change.

Over the years, frustration has grown within the sports community over the Ministry’s overwhelming focus on football, particularly the Black Stars. Despite their longstanding struggles to win major titles, football remains at the forefront of the Ministry’s attention, sidelining other sports. Journalist Saddick Adams has urged the new administration to address this imbalance. “The new minister will have to balance between growing the least funded sports and empowering areas where we have a comparative advantage like boxing and football,” he said, recognizing the enormity of the task ahead.

During the election campaign, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) promised 10 key initiatives for sports development. Jerome Otchere, a commentator, pointed out that for Ghanaian sports to progress, a clear sports policy is needed. “The Health Ministry has NHIS, Education has Free SHS, but for sports, there isn’t anything like that,” he noted, calling for a comprehensive policy framework to guide the future of sports in the country.

Kofi Adams has stated his intent to lead with sincerity and focus on grassroots development, a sentiment that has been welcomed by many in the sports community. However, as with any leadership change, it is not just the rhetoric that matters but the actions that follow. Adams will have to prove his ability to address the sector’s deep-rooted issues and balance competing interests if he is to leave a meaningful mark on Ghana’s sporting landscape.

Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment nominee, George Opare Addo has openly affirmed his membership in the Freemasons.

This sparked interest during the NDC Youth Organiser’s vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 22.

The revelation came in response to a direct question posed by Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin during the vetting session.

Here’s what ensued:

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin: Are you a free mason?

The leadership of the General Transport Petroleum Chemical Workers Union (GTPCWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has made a passionate appeal to President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to establish an Independent Non-Partisan Committee to review and conduct due diligence on the activities and performance of the outgoing Board of Directors of Tema Oil Refinery (TOR).

GTPCWU has raised concerns that some members of the outgoing TOR Board allegedly made decisions without proper consultation with the full Board, leading to a lack of transparency.

In a statement issued on January 22, GTPCWU called for the TOR Board of Directors to be held accountable for all decisions that resulted in adverse financial consequences, particularly those driven by personal interests during their tenure.

“The leadership of General Transport Petroleum Chemical Workers Union (GTPCWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) wishes to call on the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, to constitute an Independent Non-Partisan Committee to review and conduct due diligence on the activities and performance of the outgone Board of Directors of Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) (hereinafter referred to as “TOR BOD”).

“The individuals who were alleged to have spearheaded the affairs in the decision-making at the blind side of the TOR BOD were Mr. Apenteng, Mrs Sapara Grant and Mr. Ato Morission.”

GTPCWU contends that the actions of the former TOR Board of Directors indicate a deliberate attempt to involve certain individuals and affiliates from the previous government in partnering with TOR for various transactions, all conducted in a non-transparent manner.

“Therefore, sanctioning an independent and transparent review of TOR BOD’s actions will safeguard the public trust and ensure adherence to best practices in state governance, administration and financial management.”

Video Footage Of How Kofi Adoma Was Intentionally Shot In The Eye Pops Up Online

0

A shocking video has surfaced online, shedding light on the circumstances that led to the injury of broadcast journalist and media personality Kofi Adoma.

The footage, which has sparked intense conversations across social media platforms, appears to show Kofi being shot intentionally in the eye during a festival.

In the video, Kofi Adoma is seen standing close to a man identified as an Abrafour, a traditional role often tasked with handling firearms during cultural festivities. The Abrafour is observed firing a gun at close range, seemingly in the direction where Kofi was standing. The proximity of the shot has led many to question whether the action was intentional or merely a grave accident.

Eyewitnesses and viewers of the footage have been divided in their interpretations. Some suspect foul play, questioning why the gun was fired so close to where Kofi was positioned. ]

“It looks deliberate. Why would you shoot at such close range, knowing people are standing there?” one social media user commented.

Meanwhile, Kofi Adoma, who has since been receiving treatment for his injury, has yet to make an official statement regarding the incident. Fans and colleagues have expressed their support, wishing him a speedy recovery.

Obuasi mine clash: Life gradually returning to normalcy as some schools resume despite fears of reprisal

0

Life is gradually returning to normalcy in Obuasi following Sunday’s military clash with some illegal miners in Ghana’s oldest gold mining town.

Schools and other essential services suspended in the impasse are resuming.

However, some private and public schools are recording reduced attendance as some parents fear reprisals, despite heavy security deployment in the town.

Students of the Complex Model School in Obuasi are back in the classroom and happily engaged in the day’s activities.

In the last two days, schools, including universities, in the gold mining town closed temporarily, culminating from the violent clash between soldiers and some illegal miners in the community.

Like many other schools in the town, the Obuasi cluster of schools, housing four schools, recorded low attendance on the first day after the short break.

The situation has compelled teachers to merge classes for teaching and learning.

Cynthia Atia, a fruit vendor in the town, was busily serving her clients with her daughter who was expected to be in school aiding her sell her merchandise.

“My daughter doesn’t attend AGA school but I am scared to let her to go school even though schools have resumed. I will let her go on Monday instead. I am waiting for everything to be calmer than I let her go,” she said.

Life is back to the KNUST campus in Obuasi as students actively return to lectures to make up for the lost time.

But there are fears of reprisal even as they go about their academic activities.

“Though we are safe and go to class and nothing is happening around us there is this fear that something might happen. I just wish everything ends so that the psychological effect on us would be gone,” a student of the KNUST Obuasi campus told the news team.

While students in the Obuasi municipality returned to class, their colleagues in the Obuasi East district are yet to resume from the 3-day hiatus.

Classrooms at the Tutuka Methodist Primary and Junior High School in the district remained under lock and key with no student or teacher on site.

Obuasi Municipal Director of Education, George Koomson, explains the adopted measure to catch up with lost hours at school.

“With this incident and the two days lost, we are going to make sure that our morning reading sessions will be used to make up for the lost contact hours,” he said.

Mr. Koomson believes with the security deployment in town schools will be safe for academic activities to continue.

Management of the AGA Schools have also announced reopening on Monday.

Many other residents in Obuasi are eagerly awaiting the total restoration of calmness to go about their daily routine.

Dzifa Gomashie added that quality roads to tourist sites will generate investments and revenues for the country.

Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment-designate, George Opare Addo Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment-designate, George Opare Addo

The Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment-designate, George Opare Addo, has emphasised the critical role the youth play in shaping Ghana’s future.

Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, he stated that resetting Ghana requires reorienting the minds of the youth to contribute to national development.

“The Ghana we want requires the active participation of the youth, who constitute a majority of the Ghanaian population. Resetting Ghana means total re-engagement that is reorienting their minds, engaging them and building for all of us the Ghana that we’ll be proud of,” he stated.

Opare Addo identified youth unemployment as a root cause of societal issues, including violence, and pledged to prioritise job creation and skills development.

“Violence has no place in the Ghana I want. And so, as minister I am going to work effectively with the relevant agencies, the young people out there, by finding for them sustainable jobs. If we don’t address the challenge of unemployment, we’ll always have these issues of violence always staring at us in the face.

“If I have a job in the morning and you call me to come anywhere and I’m going to work, there is no way I’ll follow you there. And so, we would tackle aggressively the issue of unemployment, and by doing so, we’ll render skills training. We’ll try and put everybody who is willing and able to work to work so that we’ll be able to change the narrative,” he added.

President Mahama explains reasons for scrapping Ministry of Information

0

Key changes included splitting the Ministry of Youth and Sports into the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment. Additionally, the removal of the Ministry of Information sparked varied reactions.

During a meeting with the leadership of the Institute of Public Relations (IPR) on Wednesday, 22nd January 2025, President Mahama explained that the decision aligned with his campaign pledge to establish a lean government of only 60 ministers.

That was partly in response to our promise to downsize government, but then it also meant that we had to be very strategic. We dealt especially with the flow of information from government because that’s critical to the success of whatever we intend to do. And so we, the structure we put was to bring information into the presidency.

That’s how come we have a Minister of State in charge of government communications. And then to make sure that we’re able to anchor it with a string of strong communications professionals in the most critical sectors so that we’re able to guarantee as much information flow to the public as possible.

President Mahama also outlined plans to restructure the Information Services Department:

One of the things that remain to be done is to bring the Information Services Department under the presidency and modernise that organisation from a civil service organisation into a modern organisation that gives guaranteed information flow to the public in respect of whatever government is doing.

That department must be reformed. You can bet that consultancy is right in your hands to see how we restructure ISD, how we restructure the Ghana News Agency. You know, I think that it will create a certain synergy, modernise these organisations.

My govt will be Ghana’s most leanest and efficient

0

President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that his administration will be the leanest and most efficient in the country’s history.

This pledge aligns with his decision to limit ministerial nominations to a total of 60. So far, the president has nominated 42 ministers, with 18 more expected to follow.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony for six ministers at the Jubilee House in Accra on Wednesday, January 22, President Mahama stated, “As the ministers are approved by Parliament and as they are sworn in, I will proceed to name deputy ministers for some of the ministries, which will bring the total number of ministers to 60.”

He added, “As I promised the people of Ghana, this will make this government Ghana’s leanest and most efficient government ever.”

President Mahama’s commitment to a streamlined government reflects his goal of enhancing productivity and ensuring effective governance.

The reduction in the number of ministers is anticipated to improve operational efficiency and reduce the administrative burden on the state.

Minority accuse President Mahama of violating Presidential Office Act

0

The Minority in Parliament has accused President John Mahama of violating the Presidential Office Act.

According to the minority, President Mahama must be mandated to act in consultation with the Council of State before making appointments to the presidency.

They argue that President Mahama’s appointments to the presidency were made despite the Council of State not being constituted.

Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment-designate, George Opare Addo Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment-designate, George Opare Addo

The Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment-designate, George Opare Addo, has assured Ghanaians of his commitment to inclusivity and youth development, regardless of political, religious, or ethnic backgrounds.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, he pledged to prioritise the welfare of Ghana’s youth, while ensuring his ministry remains accessible to everyone.

“My doors are open for anybody, irrespective of political party, creed, religion or ethnicity. I am here to serve the good people of Ghana. And as national youth organizer of the NDC, that will not limit me.

“And I want to assure this committee that my doors will be open to every young person who wants to see some development and improvement in his life,” he noted.

He also elaborated on Ghana’s broader age range for the youth, explaining that it aligns with the country’s unique socioeconomic conditions.

“Our situation may be slightly different from some of the developed countries. While in other jurisdictions a 15 or 16-year-old may be independent, our economic conditions here are not the same. I believe our policymakers settled on the 15 to 35 brackets because it reflects the challenges young people face in our context. Unless circumstances demand otherwise, this framework suits our needs,” he stated.

Responding to questions on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto promise to create sustainable and decent jobs for the youth through private-sector partnerships, Opare Addo emphasised the importance of collaborations.

“We will outline specific policies and timelines aimed at fostering job creation in sectors where youth can thrive. These partnerships will not only provide employment but also equip young people with the skills necessary to meet the demands of a competitive global market,” he noted.

Volta NDC youth condemn attack on party office, urges calm

0

Woe (VR), Jan 22, GNA – The Volta Regional Youth wing of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), has strongly condemned the recent attack on the Ho Central Constituency office of the party.

Some youth believed to be members of the NDC Tuesday evening (January 21) broke into the party’s constituency office in Ho, brought out items including documents and furniture and set them ablaze at the office premises.

Mr Mathias Alagbo, popularly known as Kabila, Volta Regional Youth Organiser of the NDC, in a release on Wednesday, said they suspected that the Tuesday, January 21 incident had been carried out by disgruntled party members dissatisfied with the ongoing government appointment process being made by President John Dramani Mahama.

“In particular, the disgruntled members are said to be unhappy with the lack of any appointment from the constituency thus far by the President.

“We urge our supporters to remain calm and allow the appointment process to unfold without interference. Appointments are a continuous process, and we are confident that President Mahama acknowledges the Volta Region’s significance to the NDC’s electoral success and will reward local Voltarians accordingly.

“We wish to caution those responsible for the attack and others contemplating similar actions to desist, as such behaviour is inconsistent with the party’s values and the way Voltarians resolve differences,” it concluded.

Akufo-Addo never rented any private jet for domestic trips

0

The former Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, has refuted claims that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo used private jets for domestic travel during his tenure.

Nitiwul’s remarks come in response to allegations made by the Majority Chief Whip Kwame Governs Agbodza who accused former President Akufo-Addo of renting private jets for his travels.

Speaking during a parliamentary debate on January 22, 2025, regarding President John Dramani Mahama’s use of his brother’s private jet, Nitiwul clarified that while the former president Akufo-Addo occasionally used private jets for international travel beyond West Africa, such instances were limited, citing Emirates as an example.

“I’m not here to do propaganda. I want to say that former President Akufo-Addo has travelled on numerous occasions in the Emirates. On some of the occasions, he went with Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, former minister for Road and Highways, you can verify from him.

“It’s on record. I’m aware former President Akufo-Addo has travelled to the UK with British Airways, and Qatar Airways on numerous occasions. I’m just giving this information to Parliament and the House, and for it to enter the Hansard that former President Akufo-Addo has travelled on commercial aircraft several times, not once.

“Former President Akufo-Addo never rented any private jet to travel within the country, outside West Africa, yes, but in the country no.”

He also refuted claims that the former President did not use the official presidential aircraft.

“Former President Akufo-Addo has been using it for the last 8 months ever since it was returned from France.”

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesperson to President John Dramani Mahama, defended the President’s use of a private jet owned by his brother, Ibrahim Mahama, for official trips to Senegal and The Gambia.

Responding to public criticism, Kwakye Ofosu clarified that the private jet has been available to President Mahama even before the 2024 general elections.

He emphasized that this arrangement incurs no cost to the Ghanaian taxpayer, as the jet was made available for the trips without charge.

Kwakye Ofosu also revealed that the official presidential aircraft is currently under review by the Communications Squadron, the Air Force unit responsible for its operation, hence the private jet use.

We must collectively deal with huge taxes in the tourism sector

Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts-designate, Abla Dzifa Gomashie Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts-designate, Abla Dzifa Gomashie

The Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts-designate, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has indicated that she will reduce taxes in the tourism sector when given the mandate to serve as a substantive minister.

During her vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, Abla Dzifa Gomashie noted that high taxes in the tourism sector are affecting the ministry.

She explained that for the industry to thrive, Ghanaians, both in the private and public sectors, should work together and deal with huge taxes.

“Taxes have been the cry of the hospitality industry from way back when I used to MC their events, and I was not even in the ministry as their deputy minister. It is an issue that we must collectively deal with. I overheard the Minister of Finance, Cassiel Ato Forson, during his vetting saying he has studied the economy very well and has a fair idea of how he will help us as a country restructure it. So, I will tag along with him and I will lobby him vigorously,” she said.

Abla Dzifa Gomashie also noted that she will work assiduously to improve the infrastructure capacity in the hospitality sector.

“This is an unending discussion, especially where hotel rates are concerned. Even hotels that franchise in another country, ours tend to be very high comparatively. So, I agree with you about the lack of infrastructure to meet the growing demands of the world and country is there in our faces.

“Apart from engaging with the Minister of Finance, I think that everybody listening to me who can engage with the private sector both in and out of Ghana to ensure we improve our infrastructure capacity, you are welcome to engage with me. And if I get your nod, this is an issue we will deal with,” she added.

Dzifa Gomashie went before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, for her vetting, which will determine her confirmation as the substantive Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts.

She was nominated for the position on January 16, 2025, in a statement signed by the Acting Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

Having served as Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture under the Mahama administration from 2013 to 2017, Dzifa Gomashie is also a two-term Member of Parliament for the Ketu South Constituency, where she has championed development and community empowerment initiatives.

The anticipated clash between the Ghana Football Association and Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye will not take place, at least for now, as President Mahama has, against the expectations and predictions of many, nominated Kofi Adams as the Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation.

Kofi Adams’ appointment, which came via a communique from Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Acting Spokesperson to the President, indicated that the Buem MP will oversee the sector and ensure its development.

President John Dramani Mahama’s decision has sparked discussions across the country, with some questioning why Nii Lante Vanderpuye was passed over in favor of Kofi Adams.

GhanaWeb Sports presents four possible reasons behind this decision by John Mahama:

The 1992 Constitution mandates the president of the country to ensure a ‘reasonable regional and gender balance’ in the appointment of ministers.

Beyond the constitutional requirement, the political interest matter comes into play, as the president must ensure he is seen as a ‘father’ for all. His appointments should, therefore, have a national outlook.

A careful look at the 42 ministerial appointments so far shows that the maximum any region got was four, which includes the Volta and Northern Regions. The Greater Accra Region, which Nii Lante Vanderpuye hails from, had three, and his appointment would have increased it to four.

Prior to Kofi Adams’ nomination, the Oti Region, which he hails from, had only one minister, the regional minister. Kofi Adams has thus become the only sectorial minister from the Oti Region in John Mahama’s government.

Parliamentary Requirement

President Mahama is obligated by the 1992 Constitution to appoint the majority of his ministers from Parliament. This is made even more complex by the number of NDC MPs in the ninth parliament, many of whom will be lobbying for positions.

Nii Lante’s exit from Parliament may have affected his chances, as the president had to meet the parliamentary percentage while taking into account regional and gender balance issues. As mentioned earlier, Kofi Adams is the MP for Buem Constituency in the ninth Parliament.

Satisfying the JJ Rawlings Block in NDC

Another key and strategic consideration in the appointment of Kofi Adams was his closeness to the founder of the National Democratic Congress.

The NDC likely has three internal factions; the Jerry John Rawlings, Atta Mills, and Mahama blocks. For the sake of unity and internal party politics, John Mahama is somehow obliged to try to satisfy each block with his appointments, and that may have swung things in favor of Kofi Adams.

Non-confrontational Leader at Sports Ministry

Another reason, which is purely speculative, is that, with the importance of the 2026 World Cup in mind, President John Dramani Mahama may want someone who can engage in dialogue and build a relationship with the Ghana Football Association to enhance Ghana’s qualification chances.

Akufo-Addo’s Statue Keeps Haunting Me -Man Confesses After Destroying It

0

A young man, who identified himself as Bongo during a street interview in Takoradi on January 21, 2025, admitted to being involved in the mob that vandalized the statue of former President Akufo-Addo. The visibly shaken individual, in his early thirties, expressed that he has been unable to find peace since participating in the incident just over a week prior. He clarified that while he did not initially bring the statue down, he contributed to its further destruction.

He reportedly stated, “When I arrived, the statue was already down, and I went over to damage it more, but now I cannot sleep. I see him (the statue) every time I close my eyes, and I regret my actions.”

When asked about the motivations behind his decision to destroy the statue, Mr. Bongo struggled to provide a rational explanation.

“It was fun to do it, and I felt proud to be among those who toppled it, but upon returning home, I was plagued by nightmares. It was distressing. Just picture a statue, like a human, blinking and laughing.”

As attempts were made to photograph him, he resisted, citing fears of intimidation and potential arrest.

“Massa, I have endured enough. Do you want the police to come after me? I simply seek peace. Akufo-Addo should forgive me,” he concluded before walking away.

The statue, a gift from the Upper Dixcove Traditional Council and funded through voluntary contributions from its members, faced significant backlash following the widespread sharing of its images on social media. Erected at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in the Western Region, it was unveiled on November 6, 2024, and was completely destroyed by unknown individuals on January 13, 2025, an act that received mixed reactions from many Ghanaians.
