Rwandans living across West Africa came together over the weekend in Ghana’s capital, Accra, to celebrate the 31st anniversary of Rwanda’s Liberation Day, known as Kwibohora31.

This marked the first-ever regional gathering of Rwandans in the subregion, drawing participants from Ghana, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.

The commemorative event was graced by the presence of Ghanaian government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives from the private sector, and friends of Rwanda.

In her keynote address, Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Rosemary Mbabazi, reflected on the historic nature of the occasion and the Rwanda’s remarkable journey since the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi.

“Our celebration this year is special. Since 2020 when the High Commission of Rwanda in was opened in Ghana, today is the first time we are having physical representation of Rwandans from across Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, Benin, Sierra Leone, and Liberia convening in one place, united by a shared identity and purpose. This is not only symbolic — it is deeply historical.

“From the ashes of despair, we have built a nation anchored in dignity, accountability, equity, and progress,” she said, noting Rwanda’s transformation as a story of resilience and purpose.

She also extended appreciation to Rwanda’s international partners, particularly fellow African nations like Ghana, for their enduring friendship and support in advancing South-South Cooperation.

“This solidarity among African nations is critical to building stronger societies and inclusive economies across the continent,” she emphasized.

Representing the Government of Ghana, Hon. Ussif Jajah, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Arts, conveyed warm congratulations to Rwanda on the anniversary of its liberation.

He praised Rwanda’s leadership, particularly under President Paul Kagame, as a model for effective governance and transformative development.

“Rwanda’s progress is testimony to the power of visionary and accountable leadership,” Minister Jajah stated.

In a significant announcement, the Deputy Minister revealed Ghana’s decision to allocate a site a monument in memory of the over one million victims of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi.

He recalled Ghana’s own contribution during that dark chapter, when members of its contingent in the UN Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) stood firm to protect civilians amid the violence.

West African Leaders Launch Executive Forum On Strategic Compliance

0

Tiffany A. Archer, Esq. (3rd from R) with other dignitaries at the event

Africa can no longer wait to be included in the global governance conversation—it must now assert its place as a co-architect of governance systems that are ethical, contextually relevant, and future-ready. This was the prevailing message from the inaugural Executive Forum on Strategic Compliance in West Africa, convened in Accra under the leadership of Tiffany A. Archer, Esq., Founder and President of Eunomia Risk Advisory Incorporated.

The Forum brought together distinguished leaders across sectors—from government and diplomacy to academia, legal practice, and corporate governance—to engage in candid, high-level dialogue on the future of governance, risk management, and compliance across Africa and beyond.

In her welcome address, Tiffany A. Archer, Esq., the forum is not just a convening, “it is a signal that Africa is not waiting to be invited to the table. We are building our own with integrity, intelligence, and intention.”

She noted that some of the most courageous and value-driven leadership she has encountered comes from the West African region. “What is needed now is not imported prescriptions, but platforms for African leadership to be seen, heard, and strengthened,” she added.

Ms. Archer, whose career spans compliance leadership roles at Fortune 200 companies and global law firms, and advisory work before the U.S. Department of Justice and Securities and Exchange Commission, highlighted that Eunomia’s mission is to help organisations translate commitment into measurable capacity through data-driven, behavioural insights.

Delivering the keynote address, Professor Douglas Boateng, Chairman of PanAvest International and Africa’s first Professor Extraordinaire for Supply and Value Chain Management, called for a wholesale rethink of Africa’s governance structures.

“Western-style governance models can only take us so far. If we do not reimagine governance, we remain trapped in ceremonial leadership and short-term cycles,” he said. “Ghana led the continent’s political independence. We must now lead its economic emancipation through Afrocentric governance rooted in our realities,” he further elaborated.

Prof. Boateng’s remarks were grounded in over three decades of experience across boardrooms on five continents. He announced that his newly published governance book—written in collaboration with Eunomia—has been approved by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) for secondary school use in Ghana, and is under consideration in other African nations. The goal, he said, is to build generational governance literacy by “catching them young.”

The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour, has condemned the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, for downplaying the recent violence during the Ablekuma North election rerun, describing it as “child’s play.”

The MP expressed disappointment and concern that the Majority Leader would trivialise such a serious incident.

The violence in Ablekuma North has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for calm and restraint.

However, the Majority Leader, on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, described the chaos as “child’s play.”

Edem (right) with Divine Selase Agbeti, CSA Director-General

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has intensified its campaign to promote a safer digital environment by unveiling Ghanaian rapper, Edem (Denning Edem Hotor) as its ambassador for the Safer Digital Ghana Campaign 2025.

The campaign is a strategic national advocacy and awareness initiative aimed at fostering responsible digital citizenship and empowering Ghanaians to stay safe online.

It is a high-impact public awareness and education initiative designed to, among others, promote cybersecurity best practices across all age groups and sectors, combat cybercrime and digital threats, including phishing, scams, misinformation, online blackmail, and data breaches.

With over 30 targeted topics and sector-specific interventions, the campaign is grounded in real-world risks and supported by intensive media, digital, community, and stakeholder engagements.

Speaking at the launch of the campaign and official ambassadorial unveiling, the Director-General of CSA, Divine Selase Agbeti, noted that cybersecurity is not just the responsibility of governments or technology experts but everybody’s responsibility.

“Every child with a smartphone, every entrepreneur managing an online business, and every public servant using digital systems must be equipped with the knowledge to navigate cyberspace safely,” he stated.

He said government remains an enabler for cybersecurity development and is committed to working with key stakeholders to create the needed awareness and structures for the development of cybersecurity in the country.

Mr. Agbeti called for increased partnerships and support to create awareness on cybersecurity, adding that everybody and every institution is a potential victim of cyberattacks, and all hands must be on deck to build a cybersecurity culture in Ghana.

Edem, on his part, noted that he is committed to using his platform to promote cyber hygiene, encourage the reporting of cyber incidents and champion safe internet practices, especially among young people.

“Our shared mission is to ensure that every Ghanaian recognises that cybersecurity is not just a technical concern, it is a personal duty, a societal obligation and a national priority,” he added.

I Left My Husband On My Decision, Not God’s – Cee

0

Cee

Gospel singer, Cee, known from the popular reality show Mentor, has revealed that she ended her marriage to a pastor—not because of divine instruction, but through her own decision.

In a recent interview video circulating on Facebook, the gospel artist shared that her marriage had become difficult due to issues she could no longer tolerate. She clarified that, unlike some gospel ministers who claim they left their marriages after hearing from God, her choice was personal and based on her lived experiences.

“I was married to a pastor, but I left because of certain issues and circumstances that I could not stand. He is aware of those issues. God did not tell me to leave my husband; I left because I could no longer take certain things,” she stated.

Cee also shed light on why many gospel musicians are often drawn to marrying men of God. She explained that they usually believe pastors are more likely to understand their spiritual calling and support their ministry.

Interestingly, she revealed that she had never intended to marry a pastor and had turned down several proposals from men of God.

However, she eventually ended up marrying one despite her initial reservations.

NPP could lose 2028 if internal divisions persist — Akomea warns

0

The Vice Chairman of the 2024 Bawumia Campaign Team, Nana Akomea, has cautioned that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) risks weakening its electoral chances in 2028 if ongoing divisions among supporters of flagbearer aspirants are not resolved.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM on Thursday, July 17, 2025, Mr Akomea said tensions between rival factions within the party continue to undermine efforts to present a united front.

He noted that even the party’s post-election thank-you tour, intended to reinforce unity, had been disrupted by intra-party competition.

“This year, we took the unusual step of including all former contenders, including Kennedy Agyapong, in the thank-you tour,” he said. “It was meant to show party unity, but unfortunately, it turned into a contest of influence at every stop.”

According to Mr Akomea, instances of choreographed support for individual contenders and conflicting messages around local candidates distracted from the tour’s purpose and exposed deeper cracks in the party.

“If we don’t rein in these rival camps, we are going to lose credibility among Ghanaians. And that has serious implications for our chances in 2028,” he warned.

He cited an incident in Bantama in the Ashanti Region, where tensions between groups nearly escalated into violence, forcing party leaders to reconsider the structure of the tour.

Mr Akomea also referred to the recent detention of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi. He suggested that internal rivalries may have delayed efforts to secure his bail.

“There’s a belief that one flagbearer aspirant’s attempt to secure bail was delayed to allow another aspirant to take the credit,” he claimed. “If that’s even half true, then it shows how far the division has gone.”

The NPP’s thank-you tour was postponed this year to allow the party’s internal review committee to complete its report on the 2024 election defeat.

Mr Akomea said the inclusion of all former flagbearer aspirants was meant to demonstrate unity at the top of the party.

In his view, though, the initiative failed to deliver the intended message. “The intention was noble, but the conduct on the ground tells us that unity cannot just be performed, it must be built through discipline and shared purpose,” he said.

Mr Akomea urged party leadership to improve internal coordination and reduce personalised campaigning, which he believes distracts from the NPP’s broader appeal and risks alienating undecided voters.

“We have to ask ourselves: what does the Ghanaian voter see when they look at us now? Unity, or chaos?” he asked.

He contrasted the NPP’s situation with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), which is also conducting its thank-you engagements. According to him, the NDC has so far avoided the type of infighting playing out in the NPP.

“You didn’t hear about this kind of jostling in the NDC,” he said. “But with us, every action is seen through the lens of who supports whom.”

London, Accra Unveil Global Slavery Memorial Network with Ghana Site

London Mayor Sadiq Khan and Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey announced plans for a global network of memorials honoring Transatlantic Slavery victims, starting with sites in Accra and Freetown linked to a landmark London monument.

The announcement came during Khan’s trade mission to Ghana, reinforcing ties between the cities.

The Accra memorial, to be installed outside City Hall, will testify to the one million individuals trafficked from the Gold Coast (modern Ghana).

It connects artistically to London’s “The Wake” a 7-meter bronze cowrie shell sculpture by Khaleb Brooks, funded by £500,000 from the Mayor’s office and slated for 2026 installation at West India Quay.

Each international site will feature a smaller Brooks-designed cowrie shell, symbolizing resilience amid historical trauma.

Accra’s memorial will launch education programs addressing London’s role in financing the slave trade and its enduring socioeconomic impacts.

“This painful history shapes global society,” stated Khan, emphasizing the need to confront injustices to “build a fairer world.” Mayor Allotey called the project a “solemn reminder of resilience,” creating space for reflection and cross-cultural dialogue.

Freetown, Sierra Leone a settlement for freed enslaved people joins as the next confirmed site. The network aims to counter historical omissions; while Ghana has abolition monuments, few memorialize victims directly.

Ghana’s political landscape under President John Mahama (NDC) prioritizes cultural restitution. The memorial aligns with Accra’s efforts to reckon with slavery’s legacy, including recent diaspora engagement initiatives.

‘You use us, then ignore us!’ – Jeffrey Nortey slams filmmakers

Jeffery Nortey (pictured) has accused filmmakers for exploiting uprising actors Jeffery Nortey (pictured) has accused filmmakers for exploiting uprising actors

Ghanaian actor, Jeffery Nortey, has expressed dissatisfaction with some Ghanaian filmmakers, accusing them of improper treatment and disrespect.

In a post shared on social media on July 17, 2025, Jeffery Nortey noted that some filmmakers rely on dependable faces to push their movies when they have a low budget allocated to their projects.

He explained that filmmakers, however, ignore them for popular and A-list actors once they begin to gain their footing in the movie industry.

“It’s really disheartening how some Ghanaian filmmakers operate. When funds are low, they call on the familiar and dependable faces who push their projects, promote them tirelessly, and show up with full commitment.

“But the moment they secure the budget they’ve been chasing, they suddenly upgrade and go for actors they’ve always dreamed of working with, completely side-lining those who held them down when no one else would,” he said.

Jeffery Nortey further noted that, unlike A-list actors, “lesser-known” creatives are the main individuals who promote movies.

According to him, A-list actors do not generate money for investors, unlike up-and-coming actors.

“And let’s not ignore marketing. It’s often the so-called lesser-known actors who go all out, constantly posting, engaging fans, and doing everything they can to help a film succeed.

“Visibility doesn’t come from status alone; it comes from effort. Let’s be clear, bigger faces don’t always bring bigger money… filmmaking goes beyond star power, if we keep sacrificing loyalty for clout,” he added.

Mayor of Kumasi reveals GH¢150 million needed to complete Krofrom Market project

Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi is the Mayor of Kumasi Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi is the Mayor of Kumasi

The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, fondly known as King Zuba, has disclosed that the government will require approximately GH¢150 million to complete the Kumasi Krofrom Market, in line with the promise made by President John Mahama.

“We will need close to GH¢150 million to fully complete the Krofrom Market as promised by President John Mahama,” King Zuba emphasised.

He made this statement during an interview on Thursday, July 17, 2025, in Kumasi, following President Mahama’s renewed commitment to completing several stalled projects in the Ashanti Region, including the long-abandoned Krofrom Market.

King Zuba reiterated that the President’s pledge is not just a political statement but a firm commitment to the people of Kumasi.

“We’re doing everything possible to begin the reconstruction of the abandoned Krofrom Market, and we promise it will be ready by the end of December 2026,” he stated.

He further explained that, unlike previous attempts, the current government will fully fund the project without relying on foreign donors or outsourcing.

According to him, direct government involvement will expedite the completion of the market, unlike past arrangements which involved external funding and contributed to repeated delays.

“This time, the project will be entirely financed by the Ghanaian government. Outsourcing it to foreign donors has only slowed progress over the years,” he added.

Largest Mars rock ever found on Earth sells for $4.3m at auction

The largest rock was found in a secluded area of Niger in November 2023 The largest rock was found in a secluded area of Niger in November 2023

An “unbelievably rare” piece of Mars – the largest ever found on Earth – has sold for $4.3m (£3.2m) at a New York auction on Wednesday.

The meteorite known as NWA 16788 weighs 54lb (24.5kg) and is nearly 15in (38.1cm) long, according to Sotheby’s.

It was discovered in a remote region of Niger in November 2023 and is 70% larger than the next biggest piece of Mars that has been recovered, the auction house said.

Meteorites are the remains of rock left after an asteroid or comet passes through Earth’s atmosphere.

Sotheby’s auction house described the meteorite, a reddish brown rock, as “unbelievably rare”. Only about 400 Martian meteorites have ever been found on Earth.

“This is the largest piece of Mars on planet Earth. The odds of this getting from there to here are astronomically small,” Cassandra Hatton, vice-chairman of science and natural history at Sotheby’s, said in a video posted online.

“Remember that approximately 70% of Earth’s surface is covered in water. So we’re incredibly lucky that this landed on dry land, instead of the middle of the ocean, where we could actually find it.”

It remains unclear where the meteorite will end up as information about the sale will remain private.

Additional taxes and fees brought the total price of the rock up to about $5.3m, Sotheby’s said.

At the Wednesday auction, which featured more than 100 items, a Ceratosaurus skeleton from the late Jurassic period sold for $26m and the skull of a Pachycephalosaurus sold for $1.4m.

“‘This is Character Assassination’ – Nana Akomea Slams Kwesi Pratt Over Hawa Koomson Attack

0

Tensions flared on Peace FM’s morning show on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as Nana Akomea, former Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), clashed with Kwesi Pratt Jnr, Managing Editor of Insight Newspaper, over the recent Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun as reported by Ghana Web.

The discussion initially focused on the violence surrounding the July 11 rerun, especially the physical assault of former MP Mavis Hawa Koomson.

However, it quickly spiraled into a heated exchange when Pratt accused Koomson of being a consistent troublemaker in Ghanaian politics.

“She foments trouble wherever she goes,” Pratt said, a remark that immediately drew the ire of Akomea. “This is character assassination. You’re stigmatizing her unfairly,” Akomea responded.

The disagreement intensified as both men interrupted each other, leading to personal attacks.

“Your behaviour is repugnant,” Pratt snapped at Akomea, who retorted, “You can’t just say anything and then deny it when challenged.”

As the shouting match escalated, Akomea accused Pratt of showing disrespect to his fellow panelists, while Pratt fired back, “You don’t respect yourself at all. I’ve tolerated you for far too long.”

The verbal sparring reached a point where host Kwame Sefa Kayi had to intervene.

However, Kayi rebuked both men, urging them to focus on the issue at hand.

“You are out of order,” he said, pointing out Akomea’s frequent interruptions of Pratt. “You have heckled him too much. Please stop it.”

Bellingham to miss start of season after surgery

0

England and Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham has undergone successful surgery for a long-standing shoulder issue.

The 22-year-old is expected to miss the whole of Real’s pre-season and at least the first six weeks of the campaign, which would include England’s World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia in September.

Bellingham has struggled with the problem since 2023, when he dislocated his shoulder in a game against Rayo Vallecano.

Real said he will now undergo a period of rehabilitation before returning to training.

The Spanish club, under new manager Xabi Alonso, start their La Liga season at home to Osasuna on 19 August.

Bellingham has worn strapping on his shoulder, but told reporters in June he was “tired of playing with the sling”.

Real scheduled his surgery for after the Club World Cup in the United States, where they were beaten in the semi-finals by Paris St-Germain last week.

Bellingham joined Real from Borussia Dortmund for £115m two years ago and won the La Liga title and Champions League in his first season, scoring 23 goals in 43 appearances.

He scored 15 goals in 58 games last season, with Real losing the league title to Barcelona and knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals by Arsenal.-BBC

Acting Talents Are Wasting In Ghana – Gloria Sarfo

0

Gloria Sarfo

Actress, Gloria Sarfo, has expressed concern over the state of Ghana’s film industry, lamenting that many talents are going to waste due to lack of opportunities and production activity.

In a post on Instagram, Gloria compared Ghana’s film industry to Nigeria’s, highlighting how vibrant and active Nollywood is compared to the struggles faced by Ghanaian filmmakers.

“Honestly, if you’re in Nigeria as an actor, you’d realise that you’ve REALLY WASTED YOUR TALENT back in Ghana,” she wrote.

According to the actress, filmmakers in Nigeria are constantly working, shooting back-to-back, while in Ghana, producers struggle to even shoot one movie in a year.

“It’s CRAZY, totally disheartening. What has happened to our industry? Talents are BEING WASTED,” she added, ending her post with a plea, “Mercy Lord.”

Dismiss Violence-Endorsing Officials – Minority Women’s Caucus

0

Abena Korkor Asante

The Minority Women’s Caucus in Parliament has called for President John Mahama to immediately dismiss two top officials in his administration over what they describe as the endorsement and glorification of political violence during the recent parliamentary re-run in Ablekuma North Constituency.

At a press conference addressed by Abena Korkor Asante, Member of Parliament for Atiwa West, and flanked by her colleagues, the Caucus described the July 11 violence in Ablekuma North as the gravest assault on Ghana’s democratic values since the country’s return to constitutional rule.

According to them, the attacks, which targeted opposition figures, party agents, and journalists, were not isolated incidents but rather coordinated and systematic attempts to dismantle the electoral process through brute force.

The Caucus recounted harrowing scenes of violence that unfolded at several polling stations, including the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor, where a group of armed individuals arrived on motorbikes and in vehicles and launched brutal attacks on persons participating in the electoral process.

Among the victims, they pointed to, was Mavis Hawa Koomson, former MP for Awutu Senya East, who was physically assaulted in “a degrading and inhumane attack.”

The Minority Women’s Caucus said the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, also sustained facial injuries requiring medical attention.

According to them, other party officials, including former Okaikwei South MP Darkoa Newman and a female agent, were similarly attacked, while voters and electoral officials fled in panic.

Korkor Asante stated that violence was also reported at the Awoshie DVLA polling station, where the Caucus said individuals dressed in brown uniforms impersonated security officers in an attempt to deceive and intimidate.

When confronted by legitimate security personnel, she said the imposters reportedly failed to produce identification, exposing what the Caucus called a calculated plan to subvert the election through impersonation and intimidation.

At the Asiedu Gyedu Memorial School polling station, the Caucus indicated that violent confrontations between National Democratic Congress (NDC) operatives and police officers created a chaotic environment that disrupted voting and endangered public safety.

Perhaps the most alarming episode, the Caucus noted, was the targeted physical attack on Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, Deputy National Organiser of the NPP, which they said pointed to a deliberate and coordinated campaign to undermine opposition leadership and disrupt democratic processes.

These attacks, according to the Caucus, were executed with military-like precision and represent a pattern of electoral violence that threatens to unravel the foundation of Ghana’s democracy.

But it was the response from key figures within the Mahama administration that has sparked the most outrage. The Minority Women’s Caucus condemned in the strongest terms statements made by Dr. Hanna Louisa Bissiw, National Women’s Organiser of the NDC and Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Development Fund, who suggested that the violence in Ablekuma North was a justified retaliation, declaring that “violence begets violence.”

Even more troubling to the Caucus was a Facebook post by Malik Basintale, Acting CEO of the Youth Employment Agency and Deputy National Communications Officer of the NDC, who openly praised the man who assaulted Mrs. Hawa Koomson, calling him “the Flying Python” and joking that he had earned a position in a fictitious “5k Airforce.”

According to the Minority MPs, these statements go beyond political irresponsibility. They argued that the public celebration of violence by individuals who hold senior positions in government sends a dangerous message that such actions are condoned, even rewarded.

They insisted that by remaining silent, President Mahama risks signaling his approval of these attacks and allowing a culture of impunity to take root within state institutions.

The press conference also drew attention to the failure of the Ghana Police Service to prevent or respond effectively to the violence.

Allegations of complicity were levelled against Chief Superintendent Lumor Frederick Senanu, whose conduct, the Caucus said, must be investigated thoroughly to restore public confidence in the security apparatus.

The targeting of journalists, including the physical assault of a JoyNews reporter and an attack on GHOne TV’s Agyekum Banahene by a police officer, was described as a direct assault on press freedom and a disturbing sign of attempts to silence independent reportage.

The Minority Women’s Caucus reiterated their demand for the immediate dismissal of Dr. Bissiw and Mr. Basintale from their government positions.

They stated that their continued presence in office undermines the credibility of the Mahama administration and sets a precedent that political violence is acceptable.

The Caucus also called for the arrest and prosecution of all individuals involved in the violence, and demanded a public condemnation of the attacks by the President himself, accompanied by an apology to the victims, including Hon. Hawa Koomson and Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie.

In a direct challenge to the President, the Caucus warned that his response would define not only his leadership but Ghana’s democratic future. “President Mahama must decide whether he stands with those who defend democracy or with those who attack it,” Abena Korkor Asante declared. “The eyes of the nation – and the world – are watching,” she stated.

They called on all Ghanaians to reject violence, defend constitutional order, and recommit to the values that have sustained the country’s democratic journey since 1992.

Bill Passage: Ghana’s fisheries sector gets boost as Parliament passes bill

0

By Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, July 17, GNA – Parliament has passed the Fisheries and Aquaculture Bill, 2025, aimed at reviewing and consolidating laws for sustainable fisheries resource exploitation.

The Bill specifically seeks to review and consolidate the laws relating to the sustainable exploitation of fisheries resources and establish the Fisheries Commission to ensure the long-term conservation, development, management, and utilization of fisheries and aquaculture resources.

“The Bill also has the purpose of establishing a modern legal framework to enhance the governance, development, and sustainability of Ghana’s fisheries and aquaculture sector, which is pivotal to the national economy,” Dr. Godfred Siedu Jasaw, the Chairman of the Committee on Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs, said on Wednesday.

The Fisheries and Aquaculture Bill, 2025, was presented to the House by Madam Emelia Arthur, the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture (MoFA), on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

In accordance with Standing Order 160 (1), the minister, upon presentation and first reading, requested that the Bill be considered under certificate of urgency.

As a result, the Bill was subsequently referred to the Committee on Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs for consideration and report in accordance with Article 106 (4), (5), and (13) and Orders 160 (2) and 239 of the Standing Orders of the House.

Accordingly, the Committee met on Wednesday, June 4, and Thursday, June 5, and considered referral.

The Committee held a series of meetings to receive inputs from stakeholders in the fisheries and aquaculture industry.

Accordingly, the Committee, in its deliberations on the Bill, met with the sector minister, senior officers of the ministry, the Fisheries Commission, the National Premix Fuel Committee, and the officials of the Attorney-General’s Office and Ministry of Justice, the report said.

It noted that the Commmittee was guided by relevant documents such as the 1992 Constitution, the Standing Orders of Parliament, the Fisheries Act, 2002 (Act 625), the Fisheries (Amendment) Act, 2014 (Act 880), the Fisheries Regulations, 2010 (L.I. 1968), the Fisheries (Amendment) Regulations, 2015 (L.I. 2217), and the National Premix Fuel Committee Regulations, 2016 (L.I. 2233) during its deliberations.

Debating for the passage of the Bill, Dr. Jasaw, the Chairman of the Committee on Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs, said the fisheries and aquaculture sector played a pivotal role in Ghana’s national economy and the new Bill was expected to promote sustainable practices, boost economic growth, and ensure food security.

“Mr. Speaker, the sustainable management, utilization, and exploitation of the fisheries and aquaculture resources require the existence of a robust legal framework that governs fishing activities, regulates resource extraction, and ensures compliance with international and national environmental standards,” he said.

Dr. Jasaw told the House that Ghana was issued a “yellow card” by the European Commission (EC) in 2021 for failing to adequately tackle Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, adding that failure to act swiftly in changing the legal regime could result in the issuance of a “Red card” by the European Union.

“Mr. Speaker, a red card would result in a complete ban on the exportation of fish and fishery products to the European market, leading to an estimated loss of USD425,969,296.32,” he said.

The Committee Chairman said that the Committee observed that Ghana’s legal framework, the Fisheries Act 2002 (Act 625), was outdated, lacking provisions that addressed IUU fishing activities, and insufficient penalties for offenders.

“The Committee is convinced that the new Bill provides stricter penalties for IUU fishing and recommends its passage for a thriving fisheries sector.

“The Committee is confident that the new Fisheries and Aquaculture Bill, 2025, is a step taken towards avoiding further sanctions, i.e., issuance of the ‘red card.”

The committee observed that the new bill seeks to implement an Electronic Metering System to meet EU and U.S. market requirements for legally sourced seafood.

To the Committee, the passage of this bill will prevent economic fallouts and preserve favourable trade relationships, especially between Ghana and the EU markets,” Dr. Jasaw said on the Floor of Parliament.

‘We have forgiven Nana Agradaa of her sins’

Embattled founder of Heaven Way Church, Evangelist Particia Asiedua Embattled founder of Heaven Way Church, Evangelist Particia Asiedua

Lawyer representing Ghanaian gospel musician, Empress Gifty, has stated that he has forgiven the founder of Heaven Way Church, Evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa for her “so called lawyer comment”.

On June 16, 2025, the lead counsel for Empress Gifty, in a letter, demanded an apology from Agradaa for referring to him as a “so-called lawyer.”

The document references a viral social media video where Agradaa was seen addressing him as a “so-called lawyer” after their first court appearance.

In a recent development, the lead counsel for Empress Gifty, Patrick Tawiah-Amprofi, in a media briefing after appearing in court on July 16, 2025, noted that he and his firm have forgiven the preacher of her sins.

He explained that Agradaa has shown signs of remorse; therefore, they have retracted their earlier demand for an apology.

“The last time we met, I noted that Patricia Asiedua had made some defamatory remarks about me, for which I wrote a statement demanding an apology. I have seen a video in which she apologised. So I want to note that and my law firm and I have forgiven her,” he said.

Meanwhile, after appearing in court on July 16, 2025, Empress Gifty’s lawyers confirmed that Agradaa had filed an application praying for the Tema High Court to transfer its case to the Eastern Region.

In their defence, Agradaa’s lawyers argued that frequent transportation from Nsawam to Accra would be a problem for their clients.

Empress Gifty and Agradaa GH¢20m defamation suit:

Empress Gifty, in May 2025, filed a GH¢20 million defamation suit against Nana Agradaa, accusing her of making vulgar and damaging false claims, including allegations of promiscuity and bestiality, during a live social media broadcast.

In June, the Tema High Court dismissed her motion to strike out the case, ordering her to pay GH¢6,000 in costs, and confirmed the defamation case will proceed despite her concurrent 15-year prison sentence for fraud

The Black Satellites beat Benin 1-0 in the 2025 West African Football Union (WAFU) Championship, progressing to the semi-finals of the competition.

The match, which took place at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence on July 16, 2025, saw the Satellites push for an early lead in the first half but they were unable to break down their opponents.

Ghana suffered a major setback when Medeama SC forward Kelvin Nkrumah received a second yellow card, reducing the team to 10 men for the entire second half.

Despite being down to 10 men, the team was relentless in their efforts, continuing to be resilient to avoid conceding.

The Black Satellites held firm, with Golden Kick FC winger Bless Ege scoring the game’s only goal in the 52nd minute.

Ege latched onto a precise through ball from captain Aziz Misbau and calmly finished to give Ghana the crucial lead.

The first half offered little in terms of goalmouth action, though Ghana goalkeeper Gidios Aseako was called into action in the 31st minute to parry a dangerous strike.

Ghana finished second in Group A with four points after an opening 1-1 draw against Nigeria, who also advanced.

Benin left the tournament without a win or draw in any of their games.

This is child’s play – Ayariga downplays Ablekuma North violence

Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has dismissed the gravity of the violence that marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, describing it as minor compared to what he’s personally endured during elections in his constituency.

Mary Remmy Raises Alarm Over Fake Drugs In Nigeria

Mary Remmy Njoku

Renowned Nollywood actress and producer, Mary Remmy Njoku, has raised concerns over the circulation of suspected fake medications in Nigeria, following a personal health scare on a movie set.

In a post shared on her Instagram page, Mary revealed she suffered from food poisoning while filming and purchased Imodium, a common anti-diarrheal medication, from a well-known pharmacy chain in Nigeria. Despite using the drug for three days, she said her symptoms did not improve.

However, she noted a stark contrast when her husband gave her the same medication purchased from abroad. “After taking it, my stomach issues subsided within just five minutes,” she said.

“This isn’t the first time I have noticed a difference,” the actress added, expressing deep concern about the safety and quality of medications available in the country. “What exactly are we being sold in Nigeria? What’s going on with our drugs?”

Mary, a mother of three, called on the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to urgently investigate the matter. “This is a public health risk and NAFDAC must take it seriously. This is very dangerous,” she warned

We have become a nation of sycophants – Tony Aidoo

0

National Democratic Congress (NDC) stalwart and former Ghanaian Ambassador to the Netherlands, Dr Tony Aidoo, has issued a scathing critique of Ghana’s political landscape, branding the country as a “nation of sycophants”.

He warns that an alarming culture of blind loyalty to political parties rather than to the Constitution is steadily eroding professionalism within the civil service and jeopardising the very future of Ghanaian democracy.

In a candid interview on JoyNews, Dr Aidoo stated, “We have become a nation of sycophants, to the extent that as soon as one government changes and another regime replaces it, all allegiance shifts to the new government. But loyalty should not be to the regime—it should be to the Constitution. If you are a public or civil servant, you owe the new regime nothing beyond your constitutional duties.”

Tracing the roots of this troubling trend, Dr Aidoo pointed to the politicisation of the civil service during President Kufuor’s administration.

“This culture of lawlessness and sycophancy was rare during Kufuor’s regime. But from 2001, when President Kufuor began planting party loyalists as special advisors across ministries, professionalism in the civil and public service started to vanish.”

Reflecting on a bygone era, Dr Aidoo drew a sharp contrast with the disciplined civil service of the Kwame Nkrumah era.

“As a child growing up under Nkrumah’s regime, we had a civil service that upheld the Constitution as the supreme authority, demanding loyalty and dedication to duty. Today, that spirit is gone, and this decline poses a grave threat to the future of Ghanaian democracy.”

Beyond sycophancy, Dr Aidoo expressed deep alarm at the widespread lawlessness permeating all layers of society.

“This violence fosters a culture of lawlessness. It seems to define Ghanaian society today. Almost no aspect of our national life—be it the police, the military, civilians, churches, government officials, or the wider public—is untouched by this disorder.”

Dr Aidoo was particularly disturbed by a recent violent incident during the Ablekuma North by-election rerun involving former Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson, where police reportedly failed to act.

“I was deeply perturbed that police officers stood by and did nothing to stop the chaos. The victim was a woman, and while she may be controversial, that does not justify her being assaulted. Whatever triggered the attack, it reflects a persistent and dangerous pattern.”

He emphasised that such incidents are not isolated but part of a long history of political violence dating back to Ghana’s return to multiparty democracy:

“In 1992, an NDC chairman in Kwesimintsim was killed and burnt—a tragedy dismissed as an internal dispute. In 1996, during election campaigns, another NDC member was murdered, with clear evidence implicating NPP supporters. These acts mark a troubling continuity.”

Warning of the ongoing impact of such violence, Dr Aidoo lamented, “Since then, every election, especially by-elections, seems to attract violence. It leads me to question whether this democracy truly serves the people, who continue to suffer and yet remain active participants in the cycle of political violence.”

Meanwhile, he raised serious concerns about the integrity of the electoral process, stressing that violence and lawlessness undermine the very foundations of Ghana’s democracy.

Small-Scale Miners Fume Over Seized Excavators

0

The Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners leadership addressing the media

THE GHANA National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM) have expressed gross concern over illegal seizure of their excavators across the country, and have consequently urged the government to ensure their release to the rightful owners without delay.

National Communications Director of GNASSM, Abdul Razak Alhassan, speaking at a mammoth press conference in Kumasi yesterday, lamented that some faceless politicians have been instigating the security agencies, notably the police, to illegally seize their excavators without justification.

“These politically exposed persons manipulate security agencies, exploit regulatory loopholes and back illegal miners to take over licensed concessions not for the sake of the environment or law, but for profit and power. These activities undermine formal small-scale mining initiatives by the government and the reset agenda,” he disclosed.

According to him, the legal activities of the members of GNASSM have been adversely affected ever since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration assumed the mantle of leadership, following the harassment they have been subjected to by the police.

“We demand the immediate release of all excavators and other machineries seized from licensed small-scale mining sites,” Razak Alhassan stated, and reiterated that government should take a second look at the numerous taskforces operating in the mining areas.

He stated that the National Anti-illegal Mining Operation Secretariat (NAIMOS), launched by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, is capable of delivering on their mandate, stressing that they “should be adequately resourced to handle the illegal mining issues in a more coordinated approach to realise the impact of their mandate.”

Razak Alhassan also demanded stronger protection for licensed small-scale miners, “including clear protocols for police operations on mining sites. These efforts will in the long run promote responsible mining,” noting that the capacity of the security agencies should be built for them to understand the small-scale mining operations and license regime of the sector.

He also stated that regulatory agencies like the Minerals Commission should be part of the operations of the anti-illegal mining taskforce to reduce the rate at which licensed small-scale miners are being abused and driven out of their legitimately acquired concessions.

“We call on all to demand accountability of our resources and justice to our environment for our future and that of our children,” he stated, reiterating that their seized excavators should be released to them through government’s intervention.

Regional Maritime University receives workboat, cash support from MODEC

0

International offshore services company MODEC has donated a workboat to Ghana’s Regional Maritime University (RMU) to enhance hands-on training for maritime students.

The official handover ceremony took place on Tuesday, 15th July at the university’s campus in Accra.

The fully functional vessel, originally brought into Ghana to support the commissioning of the FPSO Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, is no longer active in offshore operations but remains seaworthy and ideally suited for maritime instruction. It was formally handed over by MODEC and its MV25 Chant Fund partners to RMU to serve as a practical training asset.

Speaking to JoyNews, Theophilus Ahwireng, Managing Director of MODEC Production Services Ghana JV Limited, underlined the company’s commitment to bridging the gap between academic learning and industry practice.

Sod cutting of the Workboat donated to RMU

“Fundamentally, what this institution does is train people for the maritime industry, closing the huge gap between classroom learning and practical application,” he said.

“You don’t expect a university to be able to fund and procure vessels for training—this is well beyond typical university budgets. It should be the priority of responsible corporate citizens to support making this dream a reality. That’s why today, MODEC is donating this boat to assist the university in delivering practical training.”

Acting Vice Chancellor of RMU, Dr. Jethro Brooks Jr., expressed his delight over the donation, describing it as a critical boost for student learning.

“We’re overjoyed to receive this facility, which will significantly enhance our ability to train students. They will now gain first-hand experience in operating machinery on a real vessel, including managing the two large engines onboard,” he said.

In addition to the vessel, MODEC presented a cash donation of $20,000 earmarked for the boat’s maintenance, ensuring it remains a safe and effective training platform for years to come.

The company also announced complementary investments aimed at strengthening RMU’s technical education infrastructure.

This includes $16,000 to secure global accreditation for the university’s Welder Training Centre and to train two Ghanaian welding instructors to Canadian Welding Bureau and American Welding Society standards.

Furthermore, MODEC has funded the installation of a 2MVA transformer at RMU at a cost of $300,000, aimed at bolstering the institution’s power capacity to support its expanding training facilities.

MP introduces bill to block MDAs from spending funds without development plan

0

By Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, July 17, GNA — Mr. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, has introduced a Private Members’ Bill to amend the Public Financial Management Act.

The proposed amendment aims to prevent the Minister for Finance from allocating funds to any Ministry, Department, or Agency (MDA) without a development plan certified by the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC).

“I’m blocking that hole where MDAs spend Internally Generated Funds. There are a lot of MDAs who will tell you that they are using their own money and not taxpayers’ money,” Mr. Oppong Nkrumah said.

He made the remarks during an interview with a section of the media at Parliament House, Accra, on Wednesday.

“Before you collect that money, there are fees and charges that need to be passed. That’s public money. Its use must be in consonance with the national development plan. And so, what this Bill seeks to do is to block that hole and help protect the public purse,” he added.

According to Mr. Oppong Nkrumah, the bill sought to improve public financial accountability and ensure that MDAs used their funds in line with the national development plan.

He told the media it was his belief that the move would help safeguard the national purse and promote responsible financial management.

If passed, the bill is expected to promote transparency and accountability in public financial management, ensuring that funds are used effectively to support national development goals.

Bank of Ghana's gold coin Bank of Ghana’s gold coin

The investment price of the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) gold coins continues to decline, a development attributed to the Ghana cedi’s appreciation against the US dollar.

The Central Bank introduced these gold coins as a strategic measure to discourage the hoarding of US dollars and absorb excess liquidity in the market, ultimately aiming to strengthen the cedi against major foreign currencies.

As of Thursday, July 17, 2025, the BoG reported the following updated prices for its gold coins:

• The 0.25 oz coin is now selling at GH¢9,565.00, down from GH¢9,620.38 on July 16, 2025.

• The 0.50 oz coin is priced at GH¢18,413.22, down from GH¢18,523.98.

• The 1.00 oz coin is selling for GH¢36,152.23, down from GH¢36,373.75.

The Ghana gold coin is available in three denominations: one-ounce, half-ounce, and quarter-ounce, and can be purchased through commercial banks.

Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced significant progress in strengthening bilateral relations with Australia.

This follows what he termed a highly productive meeting with the Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, Berenice Owen-Jones. Minister Ablakwa stated both nations are committed to accelerating cooperation in areas crucial for sustainable development and economic advancement.

Official communication from the Foreign Minister highlighted specific sectors targeted for expanded collaboration. Discussions focused intensively on enhancing partnerships within the mining industry, with particular emphasis on lithium extraction and processing. Further areas identified include supporting Ghana’s green energy transition, advancing agricultural research, and increasing academic scholarship opportunities.

The renewed momentum signifies a mutual commitment to build upon existing foundations. Minister Ablakwa conveyed the shared determination through official channels, confirming the focus on mining, lithium, green transition, agriculture, and scholarships. This structured approach aims to deliver tangible benefits for both economies through shared expertise and investment.

Concurrently, Minister Ablakwa heralded a major decision by the African Union concerning reparations. During its Mid-Year Review in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, the AU resolved to extend its focus on Reparations for a further decade, spanning 2026 to 2036. Ghana will serve as the Champion Nation throughout this extended period, leading continental efforts on the issue.

The Foreign Minister publicly applauded the African Union’s decision. He expressed profound pride in Ghana’s pivotal leadership role over the next ten years. Official statements also extended congratulations to President John Mahama for the confidence placed in him by the continental body, comprising 55 member states, to champion this significant initiative.

Ghana Importers Forced to Black Market Amid Dollar Shortage

Cedis

Ghanaian importers report an acute shortage of U.S. dollars at commercial banks despite the Bank of Ghana (BoG) maintaining an official exchange rate of 10.3 cedis per dollar.

Businesses claim banks refuse to sell dollars at the approved rate, forcing them to source currency on the black market at rates exceeding 13 cedis per dollar a 26% premium that threatens inflation and economic stability.

In a formal statement, importer representatives Robert Tettch Nortey and Francis Oti Boateng described the situation as “deeply worrying” and contradictory to BoG’s stability claims.

They allege banks routinely cite dollar unavailability, pushing legitimate transactions toward informal channels. “The BoG announces rates but cannot ensure banks comply or provide liquidity,” the group stated, questioning the policy’s effectiveness.

The disparity carries severe economic consequences. Import costs for essential goods and raw materials have surged, with businesses warning these increases will be passed to consumers. The trend also undermines Ghana’s formal financial system by incentivizing black-market reliance. Industry analysts note the crisis risks reversing recent economic gains if unaddressed.

Importers urgently demand alignment between policy and reality: “Let what they announce on paper be the practice.” They warn unchecked dollar scarcity will further inflate prices, eroding purchasing power under President Mahama’s NDC administration.

Annoh-Dompreh blasts sector minister Emelia Arthur over absence

The Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh Dompreh, has threatened to report the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, who is also the Member of Parliament for Shama, Emelia Arthur, to President John Dramani Mahama.

He claimed the minister was not demonstrating seriousness with her duties.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament during discussions on the Fisheries and Aquaculture Bill, 2025 on July 16, 2025, Annoh Dompreh expressed disappointment at the minister’s absence during the bill’s debate and consideration stages.

He lamented that such a crucial moment should not be neglected and described the minister’s conduct as irresponsible.

He accused her of consistently neglecting the responsibilities assigned by the President and suggested she be considered for a possible ministerial reshuffle.

He also encouraged majority MPs without current appointments to prepare, stating that a reshuffle was imminent.

“The consideration stage… No, there were a number of times the minister was not here. She is a Member of Parliament and should be present. Speaker, we are opposed to be taking the bill through its third reading. The minister has decided not to be in the House.

“Chairman is here. Leader is here. Speaker, we cannot compromise on this. Third reading? No. She must be here. Chairman, step out and call the minister. Tell her she must come. This is the Parliament of Ghana. She cannot prioritize other business over her own bill. The president will hear about this. Honourable members, get ready, reshuffle is coming. Lace your boots,” he said.

In response, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga challenged Dompreh’s assertions.

He acknowledged the importance of ministers being present when they introduce bills, but clarified the nature of the third reading process.

“Mr. Speaker, the third reading is procedural. The consideration stage is where policy debates and detailed scrutiny happen.

“The minister’s absence at this stage is not critical, especially since it was already completed. According to Standing Order 172, the third reading can proceed even in the absence of the Minister.

“Furthermore, the minister is currently attending an international fisheries conference in Italy. We have a deadline, and the bill was introduced under a certificate of urgency. I appeal to the House to allow the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources to move the motion on her behalf.”

After deliberations, the Fisheries and Aquaculture Bill, 2025 was passed by Parliament and is awaiting presidential assent.

The bill aims to establish a modern legal framework to enhance governance, development, and sustainability in Ghana’s fisheries and aquaculture sector, which plays a vital role in the country’s economy.

Key provisions include; Reviewing and consolidating laws for the sustainable exploitation of fisheries resources

Enhancing regulatory oversight through modern systems

Implementing an Electronic Monitoring System to meet EU and US market requirements for legally sourced seafood

Traders struggling to access forex at the banks – GUTA president laments

0

President of GUTA, Dr Joseph Obeng President of GUTA, Dr Joseph Obeng

The President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Dr Joseph Obeng, has expressed concern over the persistent difficulties traders face in accessing foreign exchange through the banking system.

Speaking at the Graphic Business/Stanbic Bank Breakfast Meeting in Accra on July 15, 2025, Dr Obeng highlighted how the lack of reliable forex access is severely affecting business operations, particularly for importers and small-scale traders.

He noted that the situation has forced many traders to resort to the black market, where rates are significantly higher and more volatile.

“There are many reasons why traders choose to do business with particular financial institutions. As I speak, we [traders] are finding it extremely difficult to access foreign exchange at the banks. The forex simply isn’t available, and we have some bankers present at this event who, I believe, should address this situation.

“There is a general unavailability of foreign currency at the banks, and this could fuel speculation in the economy. Such speculation has the potential to erode the gains we’ve made so far, gains that some may already view as artificial. If we are unable to access forex from the banks, why should we continue to do business with them, especially when the forex is readily available at the forex bureaux or the black market?,” he questioned.

Dr Obeng continued, “It has become increasingly difficult to get dollars or other foreign currencies through our banks. Businesses cannot plan, and traders are being pushed into the parallel market where rates are out of control.”

He therefore called on financial authorities, including the Bank of Ghana, to work more closely with commercial banks to ensure adequate forex supply for legitimate business transactions.

Dr Obeng also stressed that the current situation, if left unaddressed, could lead to price hikes, inflationary pressures, and the collapse of many small businesses.

The Graphic Business/Stanbic Bank Breakfast Meeting, held under the theme “Sustaining Forex Gains: Business and Economic Impact,” brought together key stakeholders from the financial and business sectors.

The meeting served as a platform to discuss pressing economic issues, including currency stability, inflation, and trade financing.

NPP has not sidelined Kufuor – Akomea replies

0

Vice Chairman of the 2024 Bawumia Campaign Team, Nana Akomea, has cast doubt on claims that former President John Agyekum Kufuor has been excluded from key decision-making meetings of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, July 17, Nana Akomea stated, “I do not think it is possible that President Kufuor would not be invited to meetings of these organs.”

He explained that former President Kufuor is a member of all the party’s national decision-making bodies, with the primary organ being the Steering Committee, whose decisions are subsequently reviewed by higher committees.

Mr Akomea added that the former president has designated two people in his office to receive all official invitations on his behalf.

“So, I do not think that the complaint I have heard President Kufuor made has to do with his invitations to the meetings,” he emphasised.

Referring to recent meetings he attended, Nana Akomea revealed that President Kufuor was absent from the last meetings of both the National Executive Committee and the National Council.

He pointed out that at the penultimate meeting where Professor Oquaye’s report was presented, former President Akufo-Addo and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President, were present, but President Kufuor was absent.

NDC Bigwigs Hot Over Galamsey

The Attorney General (AG) and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine has directed the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO) to investigate allegations of illegal mining (galamsey) made against two officials of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The AG, in a letter dated July 15, 2025, named NDC National Organiser, Joseph Yamin and Third Vice Chairman, Yakubu Abanga as the persons of intertest who are to be investigated for their alleged involvement in galamsey related activities that has drawn public criticism in recent weeks.

“I am directing your office to invite the following persons named in recent credible reports for interrogation, namely, Mr. Yakubu Abanga and Mr. Joseph Yamin,” the letter directed at the Executive Director of EOCO, Raymond Archer, read in part.

Dr. Ayine indicated that the directive is borne out of growing public concern, corroborated by media reports and intelligence, regarding the involvement of some citizens in unauthorised mining operations that are in blatant contravention of the provisions of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), as amended by Act 995.

“These activities not only flout our mining regulations but also gravely endanger our water bodies, forest reserves, and local livelihoods,” he pointed out.

Aside the two, the Attorney General has also directed EOCO to investigate any other persons found to be complicit in these unlawful mining activities.

He further directed that the scope of the investigation should include the matters highlighted in the Prof. Frimpong Boateng’s report on illegal mining.

Dr. Ayine concluded with the hope that EOCO will treat the matter with the urgency and gravity it deserves, in order to uphold the rule of law and ensure the integrity of Ghana’s extractive governance framework.

Rogue Taskforce

A group of concerned small-scale miners have levelled serious allegations against key figures within the ruling NDC and senior military officers, accusing them of operating a shadowy anti-galamsey taskforce that is ‘terrorising’ miners and extorting money under the guise of enforcing illegal mining laws.

Chairman of the Concerned Small Scale Mining Group in Ghana (CSSMGG), Andrew Abban, alleged that Joseph Yamin, the National Organiser of the NDC, and Yakubu Abanga, the party’s Third Vice-Chairperson, are names mostly cited by operatives of the parallel taskforce harassing small-scale miners in the various regions.

“We have information that these operatives use the names of some National Democratic Congress party executives to extort monies. Common names that are mentioned by these parallel taskforce assigns have been Joseph Yamin, the National Organiser of the NDC and Yakubu Abanga, Third Vice-Chairperson of the NDC and others,” he said.

The miners expressed disbelief that individuals closely linked to the ruling party would be implicated in actions that undermine the government’s own fight against illegal mining.

“We are also surprised that rather than helping us to carry out our legitimate business, some persons within the ruling NDC are aiding the activities of these unscrupulous persons posing as parallel taskforce against galamsey to destroy our businesses,” Mr. Abban said.

The group lamented that the actions of these politically connected individuals have created an environment of fear and lawlessness in the mining sector, forcing many small-scale miners to flee their sites.

Suspend Scholarship Authority Bill for broader consultations – Citizens’ Coalition to Parliament

0

The Citizens’ Coalition, a network of civil society organisations and eminent individuals, has called on Parliament to halt the passage of the Scholarship Authority Bill currently being considered under a certificate of urgency.

The group’s concern comes after the Chairman of Parliament’s Education Committee, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, in an interview on July 15, said that Parliament is set to pass the National Scholarship Authority Bill by the end of this week, a step he said is crucial towards reforming Ghana’s scholarship system and improving oversight.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, the Coalition commended the government for seeking to strengthen the legal and institutional framework for managing scholarships in Ghana.

However, they criticised the fast-tracking of the bill, arguing that there is no pressing emergency to justify bypassing normal legislative processes.

“The need for reform is undeniable,” the statement read, “yet the Bill in its current form does not adequately address the structural weaknesses of the existing scholarships regime. Rather than remedying the prevailing opacity, nepotism, and political interference, it risks institutionalising them.”

The Coalition expressed concern that the proposed legislation lacks the necessary provisions to establish a transparent, accountable, and merit-based system of scholarship administration aligned with international best practices.

They emphasised that any attempt at reform must begin with comprehensive stakeholder engagement. These consultations, they noted, should include students, youth groups, tertiary institutions, civil society, and development partners.

“A law that shapes access to academic and professional opportunity for generations of Ghanaians must not be passed in haste. It must be informed, inclusive, and legitimate,” the Coalition stated.

The group is urging the Right Honourable Speaker of Parliament to intervene and facilitate the suspension of the legislative process to make way for wider consultations.

The statement was signed by key members of the Coalition, including Kofi Asare, Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, and Dr. Kojo Asante, Director of Partnerships and Policy Engagement at the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana).

Nana Akomeah explains why NPP rejected Kufuor’s petition to postpone national conference

0

The Vice Chairman of the 2024 Bawumia Campaign Team, Nana Akomea, has explained why the party rejected former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s request to postpone the National Delegates Conference scheduled for Saturday, 19th July, 2025.

Eighty-six-year-old former President John Agyekum Kufuor voiced deep frustration over what he described as his exclusion from key affairs of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), insisting that his age should not be used as a reason to sideline him.

According to Nana Akomea, the former president had written to the party expressing his wish to attend the conference in person, but explained that he would be out of the country on the set date.

He therefore requested that the conference be rescheduled to the end of August, when he expects to return to Ghana.

Following this, the party convened an emergency meeting of the National Council, the body responsible for setting the conference date, to consider the former president’s appeal.

However, Nana Akomea disclosed that due to logistical reasons, the council was unable to accede to the request.

“The request came in a bit late,” he explained. “All arrangements have already been made for the conference, which is expected to attract some 6,000 party members from across the country to Accra.”

He further noted that the venue, the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, had been secured already, along with accommodation at UPSA and Valley View University.

He noted that payments for the venue and related services had already been completed, making it impractical to guarantee availability should the conference be postponed to late August.

The National Delegates Conference will therefore proceed as planned on 19th July 2025.

A former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Publishing Company, David Asante, has publicly declared his support for Dr Bryan Acheampong in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming presidential primary.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, July 17, Asante endorsed the Abetifi MP as the candidate best positioned to help the party recover from its poor showing in the 2024 general elections.

Reflecting on the NPP’s performance in the last election, Asante wrote: “We lost at the polling stations, we lost at the constituencies, we lost at regional levels, we lost Parliament, we lost the Presidency miserably, it was an outright rejection overall.”

He emphasised the need for deep introspection and credible leadership that listens to the concerns of the Ghanaian electorate.

The former CEO stressed that the choice of flagbearer at the 2026 contest would shape the party’s chances in the next electoral cycle.

“Who leads our Party will determine our path way in 2028 and beyond!” he stated.

In that regard, Asante presented Dr Bryan Acheampong as a leader with the capacity and clarity to reposition the party for future success, writing; “May I introduce to you Dr Bryan Acheampong…”

Dr Acheampong, who currently serves as the Member of Parliament for Abetifi, has already declared his intention to contest the NPP’s presidential primary, which is slated for January 31, 2026.

His campaign is expected to focus on party reorganisation, grassroots empowerment, and rebuilding trust with the electorate after the NPP’s electoral defeat in 2024.

Bank of Ghana to hold emergency MPC meeting on July 17

0

Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama is the BoG Governor Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama is the BoG Governor

The Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) will hold an emergency meeting today, July 17, 2025.

According to the Central Bank, the meeting is to review developments in the economy over the past two months.

This is contrary to the bank’s scheduled monetary policy calendar.

Reports have noted that the shift was due to the clash between the initial date and the presentation of the mid-year budget review.

The Bank of Ghana on July 17, 2025, revised the date for the Monetary Policy Committee from Monday, July 28, 2025, to Wednesday, July 30 2025.

There are, however, mixed views on whether or not the policy rate will be revised.

While some call for a reduction in the rates due to favourable economic conditions, others want the policy rate to be maintained.

Hearts of Oak owe Rene Hiddink $170,000 – Lawyer David Winnie clarifies

0

David Peter Winnie, lawyer for former Hearts of Oak Technical Director Rene Hiddink, has clarified that the amount the Ghanaian giants owe his client is closer to $170,000.

His revelation debunk earlier reports which suggested that the club owe their former employee $150,000.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with ghanasportspage.com, Winnie expressed surprise at the figure being quoted publicly.

“I don’t know where they got that sum of money from as I didn’t tell them anything. I told them that it was a significant sum of money. I think they have just taken a guess,” he stated.

“The actual amount is close to $170,000”, he clarified.

The revelation comes after FIFA ruled in favour of Hiddink, ordering Hearts of Oak to pay his outstanding wages following his abrupt dismissal just eight months into a three-year contract.

Hearts of Oak face the threat of a FIFA-imposed transfer ban if they fail to meet the financial obligations by the August 8, 2025 deadline.

ANC reacts to Igbo Kingdom claim in Ghana; pays tribute to late President Buhari

Chief Bayo Albert Asaolu is the President of the All Nigeria Community Chief Bayo Albert Asaolu is the President of the All Nigeria Community

The attention of the All Nigeria Community (ANC) in Ghana has been drawn to a viral video alleging that the leader of the Igbo community in Ghana intends to establish a “kingdom” in the country.

In response, the President of the All Nigeria Community, Chief Bayo Albert Asaolu, promptly alerted various Nigerian leaders in Ghana about the circulating video and issued a statement to set the record straight and prevent further misinterpretation.

“The message calls for an urgent response to clarify the facts,” Chief Asaolu stated. “Hence, this press release.”

He emphasized the long-standing diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and Ghana, which has lasted for over a century. “The efforts of our generation should focus on strengthening this relationship,” he said. “I commend our brother who spoke in the video for his professionalism.”

However, he addressed claims of disunity among Nigerians in Ghana; “Let me correct the impression that Nigerians in Ghana are not united. I make bold to say that we are united. Though there may be pockets of disagreement among us—as is common in every human society—we are effectively managing ourselves. I commend my people for their tenacity in maintaining peace.”

Chief Asaolu stressed that no foreign tribe can constitutionally or traditionally establish a kingdom in a sovereign country. “Leaders of foreign communities are appointed to monitor the welfare of their people—not to create kingdoms as alleged,” he explained. “My executive team will address the issue raised in the video.”

He also called on Nigerians in Ghana to remain calm and law-abiding. “Do not engage in any actions that could lead to trouble,” he warned. “I am in close communication with both the Nigerian High Commission and the Government of Ghana. I am confident that this matter will be handled appropriately and resolved soon.”

Addressing Ghanaians directly, he said, “Please feel free to consult my office if any issue arises involving Nigerians. Diplomatically and otherwise, we are very close as people. We intermarry, and our histories are interwoven. For instance, it is recorded that the Ga people migrated from Ile Ife, the ancient town of Oduduwa. Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, also collaborated effectively with Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe (The Great Zik of Africa) toward the independence of both countries. Our efforts should be focused on building our economies, not on trivial matters that could divide us or create hostility.”

He concluded by sharing plans for upcoming projects: “My executive is working assiduously on a trade collaboration and upcoming conferences that will benefit both countries. We are finalizing plans, and I urge all Nigerians here to be law-abiding. Ghanaians are great people—so long as you comport yourself properly.”

Chief Asaolu also joined millions of Nigerians in mourning the passing of former Nigerian President, General Muhammadu Buhari, who died recently in a London hospital. “President Buhari was a model of integrity and upright leadership,” he said. “I pray that God grants his family the strength to bear this irreparable loss.”
