At present, Guangdong’s economic aggregate accounts for about one tenth of the national total, and its industrial scale accounts for about one eighth of the national total. The 4.2% YoY increase in the added value of industrial enterprises above the designated size in Guangdong has provided strong support for the stability of the industrial foundation of the country.
In 2024, one out of every four new energy vehicles, 2.2 out of every five industrial robots and two out of every five smartphones produced in China came from Guangdong. The scale of Guangdong’s foreign trade accounted for more than one fifth of the country’s total, contributing nearly 40% of the country’s foreign trade growth.
The province’s local general public budget revenue reached 1.35 trillion yuan, ranking first nationwide for 34 consecutive years. The central-level tax revenue from Guangdong was the most in the country. A total of 1.43 million new jobs were created in urban areas in Guangdong, exceeding the annual target of 1.1 million set by the central government, and 43.86 million workers from outside the province maintained stable employment. Moreover, Guangdong continued to cultivate and expand industries with distinctive characteristics and advantages at county level, and 15 main platforms undertook about 700 new industrial transfer projects with a total investment of about 300 billion yuan.
In 2024, 54 Greater Bay Area (GBA) Standards were released, and 187 cross-boundary administrative services that are frequently needed were launched. The Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link and the Huangmaohai Sea-Crossing Passage opened to traffic. And 4.5 million vehicles entered Guangdong via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Port.
Guangdong, ranking first nationwide for 36 consecutive years in terms of GDP, is expected to make more achievements in the future.
Kwamena Duncan is a former Central Regional Minister
A former Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama over his appointments.
Duncan expressed his strong disapproval of the appointments made by Mahama so far, suggesting that they may lack seriousness.
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on January 15, 2025, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leading member expressed concern over the appointments being made in smaller batches instead of all at once, suggesting that this approach may be unacceptable.
“… A certain indicator of seriousness is missing. I don’t see any seriousness in these types of appointments where they release appointments in smaller bits,” he said.
The outspoken politician recalled the tenure of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, noting that he had made nearly all of his ministerial appointments within a few months of being sworn in.
He emphasised how Akufo-Addo aimed to have his appointments approved quickly, enabling appointees to take on their roles and start their duties without delay.
“The president (Akufo-Addo) wanted us to be approved quickly for us to take charge and ensure things begin to move accordingly,” he said.
Duncan also pointed out that Akufo-Addo made his regional ministerial appointments later after the majority of his cabinet ministers had already been appointed.
“My appointment was done in February (2017) and at the time, Accra ministerial (appointments) had been dealt with, virtually done before our appointments as the regional ministers came,” he continued.
While commending Mahama for taking the initiative to make his regional appointments even though he hadn’t finished nominating his cabinet appointees, Duncan criticised him for repeating the same ‘tot-tot’ approach for his regional appointees.
He, therefore, urged Mahama to expedite the appointment process, noting the limited time of the NDC government.
“… He [Mahama] has gone to the regions, that’s not bad. It is good but even that one he is doing is a ‘tot-tot’ appointment. Even if he had been an 8-year-bound president, we would have recommended he go faster than this, let alone 4 years,” he added.
His comments come after President Mahama released his first set of regional ministerial nominees for 10 out of the 16 regions in the country.

The Super Eagles B team secured a historic 3-1 aggregate win over the Black Galaxies of Ghana to qualify for the African Nations Championship after a six-year absence.
Following a goalless first-leg draw in Accra, the Nigerian team delivered a commanding performance in Uyo, claiming a 3-1 victory that also put to rest years of heartbreak inflicted by their West African rivals.
Ghana had previously denied Nigeria CHAN qualification in 2008 and 2022. However, this time, the Super Eagles B team was determined to change the narrative.
Speaking after the match, head coach Daniel Ogunmodede revealed how his team overcame the psychological hurdle of Ghana’s historical dominance.
“We studied Ghana and there was nothing we found about them other than history like I said before the match,” Ogunmodede said. “
There strength is history so we tried to blindfold ourselves from that.
We were determined to break the yoke. We wanted to go to Chan, and here we are.”
The coach also shared a motivational moment with his players that inspired their attacking display.

Rev Dominic Yeo signing the book of condolence
The Global Chairman of World Assemblies of God Fellowship, Rev. Dominic Yeo, has expressed condolences to the General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam on the loss of his mother, Madam Deborah Wengam.
Rev. Yeo also extended heartfelt sympathies on behalf of the entire World Assemblies of God Fellowship.
He was accompanied by Rev. Peter Chin, the General Superintendent of Brunei Assemblies of God who doubles as the Secretary of the East Asia Assemblies of God.
Rev. Yeo signed the book of condolence at the Cedar Mountain Chapel in East Legon showing his support and solidarity with Rev. Wengam during this difficult time.
The funeral service for Madam Deborah Wengam is scheduled to take place on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at the Forecourt of Parliament House in Accra.
Rev. Yeo’s visit highlights the strong connections and relationships between Assemblies of God, Ghana and Singapore Assemblies of God. It would be recalled, that last year, the Trinity Christian Centre Assemblies of God in Singapore, hosted the entire Executive Presbytery Officers and members of Assemblies of God, Ghana and their spouses in Singapore.

Samuel Dubik Mahama, Former ECG boss
The former Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, has pointed out that the company’s main challenge lies with forex rates and the depreciation of the cedi.
According to him, since ECG purchases electricity in dollars and sells it in cedis, there is a mismatch between costs and profits, leading to deficits.
“The first one is forex… you buy the electricity in dollars and you come to sell it in cedis. Then you have to find the necessary dollars to pay. If you’re looking for USD to pay the Independent Power Producers (IPPs), will the money be enough to cover the whole value chain?”
His comments were quoted by citinewsroom.com.
Dubik Mahama’s remarks come amid discussions about the current government’s decision to privatise ECG.
He acknowledged that despite the inefficiencies within the company, some improvements have been made in recent years that should not be overlooked.
He argued that private sector participation already exists within ECG, and further privatisation may not be necessary.
“I do admit that there are a few inefficiencies in the company, but likewise, there are some efficiencies. Now, before you proceed with privatisation, what are the benchmarks? Let’s not forget that there is already private sector participation in ECG,” he said.
He further explained that, “At the metering point under the loss reduction program, ECG has moved from its previous position where it used to look for large sums of money to purchase meters. That was one thing I decided to change when I became the Managing Director. I discussed with the board, and we concluded that looking for capital to purchase meters didn’t make sense.”
He also suggested, “Why don’t we bring in all these metering companies and encourage them to establish factories in the country? Based on that, we now have about seven metering companies with factories in Ghana. What we then did was assign them localities to install their meters. That is private sector participation, and if you do the math, you’ll see that it saved us a lot—almost 50% in borrowing costs and administrative expenses.”

16-year-old goalkeeper Edson Lopes has tragically passed away after saving a penalty during a community game in Brazil.
According to The Sun, Edson saved the penalty with his chest and subsequently suffered a severe injury, leading to him being rushed to the hospital.
The report indicated that he was transported from Maués, a remote area in the Amazon rainforest, to a hospital—a journey that took 11 hours before they arrived at the medical centre.
Unfortunately, Edson succumbed to his injuries upon arrival and was pronounced dead on January 5, 2025.
In a social media post, his brother Eliomar paid tribute to the young goalkeeper.
“Today, you touched all of Brazil. You were a dedicated player and a joyful child. My brother, you left us while doing what you loved most—playing football.”

The Police have arrested three suspects in connection with the alleged smuggling of cocoa beans to neighbouring countries, specifically, Togo or Burkina Faso, the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has confirmed.
The suspects include one of the drivers and two driver-mates of the three heavy-duty trucks which were carrying the 1,473 maxi bags of cocoa beans covered with lumber.
The suspects had since been granted bail, assisting in police investigations. Two other suspects (drivers) involved in the crime are on the run.
The Anti-Smuggling Task Force of the COCOBOD intercepted the trucks with registration numbers GR 7237-21, GR-314-24, and AS 5278-23 at Nkrankwanta in the Dormaa West District of the region.
Briefing the media in Sunyani, Michael P.K. Asumanu, the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regional Administrator of the COCOBOD, said the task force comprised the police, National Investigations Bureau, National Security and the COCOBOD.
He said the seized trucks had since been sent to the Bono Regional Police Headquarters in Sunyani for safekeeping, while the COCOBOD had taken custody of the cocoa beans since no one had claimed ownership of them.
Mr Asumanu said smuggling caused huge economic loss to the nation, because cocoa contributed hugely to the economy, and urged the public to support the fight against the smuggling of the beans, saying “We design rewards for informants.”
The Acting Bono Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission, Emmanuel Ntiako, later told the Ghana News Agency that the agency was also assessing the lumber.

The African Institute of Energy and Sustainability (AIES) has called for urgent reforms in Ghana’s energy sector, highlighting the need for transparency, sustainable policies, and political accountability to ensure reliable power supply.
In a recent report, the AIES stressed that while Ghana’s installed generation capacity of 5,492 MW exceeds the system’s peak demand of 3,848 MW (Energy Commission, 2024), persistent financial inefficiencies continue to undermine the sector’s stability.
The organization noted that Ghana’s energy sector debt reached $2.5 billion by the end of 2024, necessitating swift intervention to avert another power crisis akin to the 2013–2016 “dumsor” period.
The report criticized the politicization of energy challenges by successive governments and emphasized that “political rhetoric does not keep the lights on; proactive measures and strategic financial management do.”
Key Recommendations
The AIES outlined several measures to address the sector’s inefficiencies and ensure sustainable energy governance:
1. Transparent Energy Accounting: Publish comprehensive and verifiable reports on energy sector finances.
2. Cost-Reflective Tariffs: Implement balanced tariff systems to ensure affordable rates for vulnerable consumers while allowing utilities to recover costs.
3. Decouple Distribution and Retail Functions: Separate the retail and distribution roles of ECG and NEDCo to improve efficiency.
4. Privatize the Retail Sector: Introduce performance-based contracts with private companies to reduce commercial losses.
5. Reform the Cash Waterfall Mechanism (CWM): Ensure timely and equitable disbursement of revenue at the point of purchase.
6. Invest in Renewable Energy: Accelerate the transition to solar, wind, and hydro energy by removing bureaucratic barriers.
7. Depoliticize Energy Management: Strengthen the independence of regulatory bodies to oversee the sector without political interference.
8. Foster Political Consensus: Organize a non-partisan energy summit to create a long-term roadmap for energy sustainability.
Conclusion
The AIES emphasized that the future of Ghana’s energy sector must not be held hostage by partisan politics. Instead, it called on the government to demonstrate the political will to address financial inefficiencies, prioritize renewable energy, and ensure transparency.
“Keeping the lights on is not a political favour; it is a fundamental right of every Ghanaian,” the report concluded.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has commenced interview processes for applicants aspiring to serve as Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Ashanti region.

Elder Debrah Bekoe has been donating to widows,less privileged and the aged in the community every Christmas and other festive occasions.
This year organized a party with live band music for 300 people ( widows,aged and the less privileged) in the Larteh township.He donated a piece of cloth each to widows, aged and needy women in Larteh township.
Mr. Debrah Bekoe donated these items to these individuals across the churches and suburbs in Larteh. The people who enjoyed this benevolent act of the young philanthropist were drawn from The Apostolic Church of Ghana, Presbyterian Church, Methodist Church, three local assemblies in the church of Pentecost and members of the community.

The young philanthropist in an interview with our outfit bemoaned how these widows, less privileged and aged are left with no hope and joy during festive occasions, thus his call to duty to put smiles on their faces.
Elder Debrah Bekoe Isaac said he thinks it is time for the church, individuals and leaders to find means of sustaining the joy and happiness of the less privileged in our society to increase life expectancy. This was the Sixth (6th episode) of this program to support and put smiles on the faces of the aged.
Mr Debrah Bekoe Isaac debunked the stereotype belief of Ghanaians who think rendering support to people especially the aged will bring bad omen and loses to avenues of life. He urge all Ghanaians to put up their best in offering the little support they can to the vulnerable people in our communities and churches.

US Senator, James E. Risch
A Ranking Member of the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Senator James E. Risch, has noted that Ghana owes American companies approximately $251 million.
He added that the repayment of these debts will significantly influence the future relationship between the two countries.
Senator Risch urged Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to leverage America’s position as the IMF’s largest shareholder to ensure the Fund compels Ghana to repay its debts to American entities.
In a letter addressed to Treasury Secretary Yellen, Senator Risch claimed that Ghana owes several U.S.-based businesses, including Twin City Energy (TCE), American Tower Company, GSM, Chubb, Kosmos Energy, and Zipline.
According to him, these debts place a severe financial burden on the companies and threaten their operations in Ghana.
“It is my understanding that the government of Ghana owes approximately $251 million in outstanding payments to American companies. These unpaid debts place substantial financial strain on U.S. businesses in Ghana and jeopardize their operations and investments,” Senator Risch wrote.
The letter was copied to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, U.S. Executive Director of the IMF Elizabeth Shortino, and DFC CEO Scott Nathan.
The Senator expressed concern that the IMF’s anticipated approval of a $3 billion Extended Credit Facility for Ghana does not account for these debts.
He believes this could set a harmful precedent for other sovereign borrowers and negatively impact U.S. companies operating abroad.
Two of the affected companies, Twin City Energy and Chubb, have investments backed by the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), which means Ghana’s arrears affect not only private businesses but also investments financed by U.S. taxpayers.
Senator Risch urged the Treasury Secretary to use the United States’ position as the IMF’s largest shareholder to condition U.S. support for further IMF assistance to Ghana on the country’s commitment to repaying its debts to American companies.
“I urge you to direct our executive director at the IMF to make clear that U.S. support for further IMF assistance to Ghana will depend on a good-faith effort to establish a concrete and enforceable repayment plan for the remaining outstanding arrears,” he stated.

President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Member of Parliament for Ketu South Constituency, Dzifa Abla Gomashie as the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts in Ghana.
The announcement was made on January 16, 2025 and signed by the Acting Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
Abla Dzifa Gomashie served as a Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts under the Mahama’s administration from 2013 to 2017.
Gomashie is a politician and creative arts expert with four decades of experience in practice.
As the two-term Member of Parliament for Ketu South Constituency, Dzifa Gomashie has championed development and community support initiatives.

Clement Apaak serves as a member of Parliament for Builsa South
Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, has assured the Ghanaian public that the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) remains committed to delivering its free tuition policy for first-year students in public tertiary institutions.
His comments follow claims made by the retired Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Nunoo Mensah.
A retired army officer who spoke during a stakeholder engagement at O’Reilly Senior High School noted that the initiative was unnecessary.
He asserted that the initiative would not be feasible.
But reacting to it in a media interview, the lawmaker will deliver on its campaign promises and any other policies promised to Ghanaians.
“John Dramani Mahama and the NDC campaigned vehemently, and if for nothing at all, the magnitude of the NDC’s victory in terms of parliamentary seats and the gap between our candidate, now President, and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President, should be a testament that this, among many other worthy and accepted policies, accounted for the overwhelming support we have received. If there are persons who feel that they don’t need it and would not want to be beneficiaries of this arrangement, they are free to opt-out. Rescued miners have been taken for medical checks
No more illegal miners are believed to be trapped underground at a gold mine in South Africa, volunteers working with rescue teams have said.
At least 78 bodies and more than 200 survivors have been pulled out since Monday after a court ordered the government to facilitate rescue operations at the mine, the site of one of the most extraordinary tragedies to hit the industry.
Police said they would check that no-one was left on Thursday, when a rescue cage would be sent down the mine.
The stand-off began in November when the government ordered police to arrest any miner who surfaced, saying it was determined to end illegal mining.

During a visit on Tuesday, the police and mines ministers were insulted and told to leave by an angry crowd that blamed the government for the deaths.
Police said that more than 1,500 miners had come to the surface before the rescue operation began, Reuters news agency reports.
However, others remained underground, either because they feared arrest or were forced to stay there by gangs that control the mine.
A South African Police Service spokesman said of the volunteers’ statement that no-one was now still underground: “We will rely on the Mine Rescue Service to confirm this with their state-of-the-art equipment that will hopefully be able to give us a picture of what is happening underground.
“The Mine Rescue Service have confirmed that they will send the cage underground in the morning to see if any illegal miners surface with the cage. We cannot say for sure that the operation has been called off at this stage.”
Inside South Africa’s ‘ruthless’ gang-controlled gold mines
Many mines in South Africa have been abandoned over the last three decades by companies that did not find them economically viable.
The mines have been taken over by gangs, often former employees, that sell minerals they find on the black market.
This includes the mine in Stilfontein, some 145km (90 miles) south-west of the country’s biggest city, Johannesburg, which has been the focus of government efforts to clamp down on the illegal industry.
A rescue cage has been making trips down a shaft to reach scores of miners thought to be at least 2km (1.2 miles) underground.
Many of the survivors had been without food and water since November, leaving them emaciated. They are now receiving medical care.
The authorities say they will be charged with illegal mining, trespassing and contravention of immigration laws, as the majority of the miners are undocumented migrants from neighbouring countries.
“It’s a crime against the economy, it’s an attack on the economy,” Mines Minister Gwede Mantashe said on Wednesday as he defended the hard line taken against the miners.
South Africa relied heavily on miners from countries such as Lesotho and Mozambique before the industry went into decline.
Unemployment in South Africa is currently more than 30% and many former miners say they have little alternative source of income.

A ranking member of the United States Senate committee on foreign relations, James E Risch, has asked the Treasury secretary, Janet Yellen, to leverage the position of the US as the largest shareholder in the International Monetary Fund to ask the IMF to get Ghana repay its debts to US entities.
It will be the precondition for US support for further IMF assistance to Ghana, he warned.
Expressing formal concerns about the potential US$3 billion International Monetary Fund loan to Ghana, Senator Risch cited significant unpaid debts owed by the Government of Ghana to American companies.
In a letter addressed to US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Senator Risch claimed that Ghana owes approximately $251 million in arrears to several US-based businesses, including Twin City Energy (TCE), American Tower Company, GSM, Chubb, Kosmos Energy and Zipline.
These arrears, he noted, have placed a severe financial burden on these companies and threaten their operations in Ghana.
“It is my understanding that the Government of Ghana owes approximately $251 million in outstanding payments to American companies,” Senator Risch wrote.
“These unpaid debts place substantial financial strain on US businesses in Ghana and jeopardise their operations and investments.”
Senator Risch expressed apprehension that the IMF’s anticipated approval of a $3 billion extended credit facility for Ghana would proceed without addressing these outstanding debts.
He argued that it could set a harmful precedent for other sovereign borrowers and affect US companies operating abroad negatively.
The senator emphasised that two of the affected companies, Twin City Energy and Chubb, have investments backed by the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), meaning that Ghana’s arrears affect not only private businesses, but also investments financed by US taxpayers.
Urging Secretary Yellen to leverage the United States’ position as the IMF’s largest shareholder, Senator Risch maintained that US support for further IMF assistance to Ghana be made contingent upon the Ghana government’s commitment to repaying its debts to American entities.
“I urge you to direct our executive director at the IMF to make clear that US support for further IMF assistance to Ghana will depend on a good-faith effort to establish a concrete and enforceable repayment plan for the remaining outstanding arrears,” he said.

A survey conducted by Joy News through its social media platforms has delivered a damning verdict on former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, holding him largely responsible for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) stunning defeat in the December 2024 election.
The survey, which sought public views on factors contributing to the NPP’s shocking loss, revealed that the majority of respondents blamed former President Akufo-Addo, citing his government’s harsh economic policies, nepotism, corruption, and the arrogance of some of his appointees as key reasons for the party’s defeat in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.
Akufo-Addo to Blame
The most common sentiment expressed by respondents was criticism of former President Akufo-Addo, who was widely accused of failing to take adequate action, ultimately causing the NPP’s flagbearer and parliamentary candidates to suffer for his administration’s shortcomings.
Many respondents particularly criticized the former President for endorsing harsh and insensitive economic policies such as the e-levy, betting tax, COVID-19 levy, and poor debt management strategies.
Additionally, he was accused of shielding his cousin, former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, despite widespread criticism of his handling of the economy. Respondents highlighted that his delayed removal was perceived as a failure in leadership.
Nana Akufo-Addo was also criticized for his perceived arrogance, with many referring to instances where he reportedly instructed chiefs to stand to greet him, an action which some respondents felt disrespected traditional authorities and angered the electorate.
Several respondents further accused the former President of causing apathy within the NPP by refusing to heed internal advice and make timely changes in his government. This, they said, denied opportunities to deserving party members and created dissatisfaction among the grassroots.
The refusal to remove Ken Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister, despite overwhelming calls from NPP MPs and ordinary Ghanaians, was cited as evidence of his unresponsiveness to public concerns.
Exorbitant Taxes
Beyond personal criticism, many respondents slammed certain policies under Akufo-Addo’s administration, claiming they brought economic hardship on Ghanaians.
Central to their concerns were taxes such as the e-levy, COVID-19 levy, and the betting tax, along with the government’s debt management approach.
Both former President Akufo-Addo and ex-Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta faced strong criticism for these policies, which were described as contributing significantly to the party’s unpopularity, even among its own supporters.
Arrogant Appointees, Corruption & the ‘Clearing Agent’ Tag
Some respondents also criticized government appointees, accusing them of being arrogant and inaccessible, which they argued alienated them from the electorate and caused further disaffection for the party.
Corruption was another major theme, with several respondents revisiting scandals from the Akufo-Addo administration. Many pointed to the former President’s reputation as a “clearing agent,” a nickname he earned for exonerating appointees accused of corruption without proper investigations.
Neglect of Strongholds
The survey further highlighted dissatisfaction with the Akufo-Addo government’s neglect of key projects, particularly in the party’s strongholds such as the Ashanti Region, as well as parts of the Western and Bono/Ahafo Regions.
In the Ashanti Region, many respondents faulted Akufo-Addo for failing to prioritize major projects, especially the Suame Interchange, which they believed could have boosted the party’s fortunes.
Conclusion
In summary, most respondents who participated in the Joy News survey attributed the NPP’s defeat to former President Akufo-Addo’s leadership, blaming his administration’s policies and actions for the loss of both Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the presidential race and the unprecedented defeat of numerous NPP parliamentary candidates across the country.

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts-designate, Abla Dzifa Gomashie
Abla Dzifa Gomashie has been nominated as the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts-designate by President John Dramani Mahama.
The appointment was announced on January 16, 2025, through a statement shared by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Acting Spokesperson to the President.
She already has experience with the role, having served as deputy minister from 2013 to 2017.
Below is a profile of Dzifa Gomashie:
Born in Accra to Mr. Patrick Dotse Gomashie and Helen Gomashie, Dzifa pursued her secondary education at St. Louis Senior High School in Kumasi.
She then attended the University of Ghana, earning a diploma in Theatre Arts, a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Management, and an MPhil in African Studies from the Institute of African Studies.
Dzifa’s acting career began in 1985 with the Talents Theatre Company, where she performed in plays such as “Black Star,” “Mambo,” “Chaka the Zulu,” “Jogolo,” and “The Third Woman.” She has also appeared in several films, including “Ghost Tears,” “House of Pain,” “Heart of Gold,” and various National Arts NAFTI student productions.
In addition to acting, Dzifa produced and wrote scripts for “By The Fire Side,” a GTV program aimed at encouraging children to read through storytelling.
She also owned a restaurant called Mama’s Kitchen at Ashaley Botwe.
In 2013, Dzifa was appointed as the Deputy Minister of the Ministry, a role she held until the NDC was voted out of power.
In 2020, Abla Dzifa Gomashie won the Ketu South Parliamentary seat for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
She secured 84,664 votes out of 102,179 total votes cast, defeating David Tiahno Quarshie (NPP), Rev. Dometor Henyo (GUM), and Mr. Holy Kingsford Amegah (LPG).
Gomashie made history as the first female to hold this position in the southern Volta Region since the Fourth Republic.
In 2024, she retained her seat as the incumbent Member of Parliament for Ketu South, running on the NDC ticket with 78,902 votes.
Now, in 2025, Gomashie has been appointed as the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts in Ghana.

Bournemouth striker, Antoine Semenyo
Samuel Aboabire, a member of the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association, holds that the failure of the Black Stars to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations should be blamed more on the players than anyone else.
Speaking on Amansan TV, Aboabire noted that the Black Stars are struggling because the players are unable to replicate their club form at the national team level.
He noted that while the players show passion and consistency for their clubs, their performance for the country is a pale shadow of that.
Aboabire noted that Antoine Semenyo has been creating and scoring goals for Bournemouth, but the same cannot be said of him in the Black Stars.
“Semenyo is scoring consistently for Bournemouth, yet we don’t see the same productivity when he plays for the Black Stars. This lack of conversion has hurt us,” Aboabire told Amansan TV.
“If our players can replicate their form at club level when they wear the national jersey, Ghana can definitely qualify for the 2026 World Cup,” he added.
His comment comes on the back of Semenyo’s performance for Bournemouth in a Premier League match against Chelsea on January 14, 2025.
The Ghanaian forward was outstanding in the match, scoring and creating a penalty for Bournemouth, who drew 2-2 with Chelsea.
Semenyo, who was awarded Man of the Match, has scored six goals in the 2024/2025 Premier League season.

Hundreds of people have died from the virus in recent years, almost all in Africa
Tanzania has dismissed a World Health Organisation (WHO) report of a suspected new outbreak of the Ebola-like Marburg virus in the north-west of the country.
On Tuesday, the global health agency said a total of nine suspected cases were reported over the last five days in the Kagera region, including eight deaths.
But in a statement, Tanzania’s Health Minister Jenista Mhagama said after samples were analysed, all suspected cases were found negative for Marburg virus.
She said that the country had strengthened its surveillance systems and disease monitoring.
We “would like to assure the international organisations, including WHO that we shall always keep them up to date with ongoing developments,” Mhagama said.
Tanzania experienced its first Marburg outbreak in March 2023 in the Bukoba district. It killed six people and lasted for nearly two months.
The highly infectious disease is similar to Ebola, with symptoms including fever, muscle pains, diarrhoea, vomiting and, in some cases, death through extreme blood loss.
On Wednesday, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned of “further cases in the coming days as disease surveillance improves” in the latest suspected outbreak in Tanzania.
The WHO reported that patients, including healthcare workers, had been identified and were being monitored.
It added that the country’s rapid response teams had been deployed to help identify suspected cases and contain the outbreak.
The WHO cautioned that the risk of the suspected virus spreading in the region remained “high” because Kagera was a transit hub with much cross-border movement to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda.
“We do not recommend travel or trade restrictions with Tanzania at this time,” Dr Tedros said on X.
The WHO said the global risk posed by the outbreak was “low”, and there were no concerns at this stage of the disease spreading internationally.
Following the reports, a team of experts was immediately deployed to Kagera region, where they collected specimens, said Tanzania’s health minister.
She said that laboratory results had ruled out the suspected Marburg outbreak but the minister did not clarify the total number of suspected cases investigated.
In December, neighbouring Rwanda declared an outbreak in the country, which had infected 66 people and killed 15, was over.
On average, the Marburg virus kills half of the people it infects, according to the WHO.
The Marburg virus is transmitted to humans from fruit bats and then through contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals.
There are no specific treatments or a vaccine for the virus, although trials are under way.
Contrary to earlier reports suggesting that Angel TV presenter Kofi Adomah had been shot, new details have emerged revealing that his injuries were sustained during a traditional musketry firing ceremony at a funeral in Dormaa, Bono Region.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when Kofi Adomah attempted to reposition himself near a chief’s musket.

He is an educationist and management expert with over 20 years of leadership experience in education, governance, and general administration.
As a two-term Member of Parliament for the Gomoa East Constituency, he spearheaded development initiatives in the area.
He is currently the Executive Director of the Centre for Artisan and Apprentice Development, where he has designed and implemented training programs that have empowered over 5,000 artisans and apprentices.
Mr. Okyere holds an MBA in General Management, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), and a Diploma in Management Studies from the University of Cape Coast.
Joseph Nelson – Western
Mr Joseph Nelson is a public servant, finance, and economic management expert with extensive experience in business management across Ghana and the UK.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with Management Science from the University of Northampton, UK; an MSc in International Finance and Economic Policy from the University of Glasgow, UK; and an MSc in Microfinance from the University of Cape Coast.
In public service, he previously served as the Regional Director of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA).

Mr Kwadwo Gyapong, a businessman kum politician, was born on December 22, 1950, attended Kedjebi Secondary school, and currently holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education.
He also served as the Member of Parliament in the second and fourth Parliament for the people of Akan and as the Volta Regional Chairman of the NDC.
He is currently the Oti Regional Chairman of the NDC before his nomination after securing 100 per cent of the votes in the region, for both the 8th and 9th Parliament representation from the region, for his party.

Ratings agency Fitch has forecasted a turnaround in Ghana’s banking sector once the local economy stabilises from its current challenges.
It cited recovery from compounding debts, an improved business environment, and other positive indicators as factors likely to drive economic growth.
Fitch noted that Ghanaian banks recorded profits in 2023 and 2024, attributing the significant windfall to high yields on treasury bills.
According to the ratings agency, this growth has helped rebuild the capital base of local banks, which had suffered significant losses due to the controversial Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) in the last quarter of 2022.
Fitch further stated that the recovery of banks will position these financial institutions to meet regulatory capital requirements once temporary relief measures expire.
“A more stable economic environment, characterised by stronger GDP growth, declining inflation, and a stabilized exchange rate, is expected to be achieved in 2025,” Fitch said.
The Domestic Debt Exchange Programme introduced by the Akufo-Addo government aimed to amend the terms of interest and repayment timelines for Ghanaians who loaned money to the government—bondholders.
Essentially, the government replaced the original agreement with bondholders by introducing new interest rates and/or revised durations.
According to the government, the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme was part of a broader agenda to restore the country’s debt and financial sustainability.
The proposed interest rate under this programme was set at 10% per year, with a stepped-up schedule starting at 0% in 2023, increasing to 5% in 2024, and finally reaching 10% from 2025 until maturity.

Gospel musician Joyce Blessing has revealed she once sold pure water on the streets as part of her struggle to survive. Speaking on Hitz FM on Wednesday, the singer shared her journey from hardship to success, recounting how she sold water, second-hand clothes, brooms, and other goods to make ends meet.
Joyce Blessing, who is known for her hit song “Oluwa Is Involved,” explained that she left home at an early age due to the challenges her mother faced raising three children on her own.
“From the beginning, it was very hard for me. If I tell people that I used to sell pure water, they don’t believe me,” she said. “Sometimes, I would sell second-hand clothes, brooms, and gari. In fact, we sold anything that we came across. My sister and I did this together.”
She also recalled how her parents were unaware of her move to Accra, as communication was not as easy back then. “My parents didn’t even know how I got to Accra. They got to know when someone informed my mother about a song I did which became a hit,” she shared.
“At that time, phones were not as common as they are now. But I am sure she wept when she heard the news.”
Joyce’s mother gave birth to five children, but due to financial challenges, three of them remained with her while the others, including Joyce, took to the streets to sell. Reflecting on those difficult times, Joyce expressed deep empathy for street vendors.
“People who knew me then now address me as ‘Akos.’ Anytime I am on the street and I see these people selling, I can give them the last money on me without hesitation, even if it means not buying fuel for myself,” she said.

Nigerian pastor Abel Damina has shared his views on tithing, addressing the common practice in modern Christianity and its historical roots.
According to Pastor Damina, the concept of tithing originated from the tribe of Israel, specifically the Levites, who were set apart to worship in the temple on behalf of Israel. They were not meant to work secular jobs but to focus entirely on temple service.
During his appearance on the Honest Brunch podcast, monitored by MyNewsGh, he stated, “Moses borrowed the tithing principle from Abraham and established it for the Israelites.”
He said, “‘Since I am your mediator, I cannot serve you alone. I have the Levites, so every year, all of you will bring a tithe in the form of foodstuff to support them.'”
This practice ensured that the Levites, who served in the temple, had enough to eat, as they had no other means of livelihood.
Pastor Damina went on to clarify that there are three types of tithes in the Old Testament. The first type is paid every three years, the second is paid annually from the harvest, and the third involves the family bringing foodstuff to the temple.
“When you bring your tithe, you can sell it, buy anything you like, including alcohol, and enjoy it with your family,” he said, adding that the inclusion of alcohol was part of the original practice.
He raised a crucial point for Christians today, “When pastors talk about tithing, ask them which type they are referring to. Is it the tithe paid every three years, the one from the harvest, or the one where you enjoy it with your family in the temple?”
He also emphasised that most people today are not farmers and, therefore, do not have harvests to tithe from.
Additionally, Pastor Damina argued that modern pastors are not Levites. “No pastor today is a Levite,” he said.
“Jesus didn’t come from the tribe of Levi, and if Jesus called you, you’re not a Levite, so why are pastors still asking for tithes?”
He further explained that the practice of tithing, as described in the Old Testament, was meant to sustain the Levites.
The famous scripture from Malachi 3:10, often cited to encourage tithing, was directed at priests who failed to pay their tithes.
“The scripture is not for Christians; it’s not for believers,” Pastor Damina pointed out.
“In the New Testament, Christianity is historic and apostolic. We should only do what the apostles did and teach what Jesus taught. Jesus did not pay tithe,” he claimed.
