A 22-year-old ex-convict jailed in Tarkwa

Tarkwa (W/R), Jan 15, GNA – The Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced Fatawu Abdellah, an ex-convict, to 15 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for robbing and threatening to stab a student.
Abdellah aged 22, popularly known as ‘Rebel’ denied the offence, but at the end of the full trial he was found guilty and convicted.
Chief Superintendent of Police Alex Odonkor, who led prosecution told the court presided over by Mrs Hathia Ama Manu that the complainant, was a student and lived with her mother at Bogoso, while Abdellah, a small-scale miner lived at Atechem Zongo, all in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality.
He said Abdellah was among a group of young men terrorizing hawkers, travelers and even residents of Bogoso at night, and they usually robbed them of their belongings.
On October 23, 2023, at about 10:30 pm, the complainant was playing game on her Infinix Hot 9 mobile phone at the KEK bus terminal in Bogoso, when Abdellah came from behind, and attempted to snatch the phone.
Chief Superintendent Odonkor said the complainant refused to hand over the phone to Abdallah and he struggled with her.
The convict then threatened the complainant with words that “if she continues to resist, he will stab her with a knife” and in the process bit her right thumb and succeeded in taking the phone.
The court heard that the complainant lodged a complaint against Abdellah at the Bogoso police post where she was given police medical form to visit the hospital for treatment and report.
Prosecution said the medical form was endorsed by Dr Anthony Lucky Arthur of Bogoso Government hospital and it was returned to the police.
On November 28, 2023, Abdallah was seen in Bogoso town and was apprehended, but he denied biting the complainant in his investigation caution statement.
The complainant’s Infinix Hot 9 mobile phone was, however, retrieved from Abdallah.

Mahama is running away from signing the LGBTQ+ Bill

The Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has accused President John Dramani Mahama of avoiding his commitment to sign the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.
In a post shared on his X page on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, Ahiagbah called on the president to fulfill his campaign promise regarding the bill.
“H.E. John Mahama is running away from signing the LGBTQ+ Bill after promising to do so in its current form. Elections have consequences, and H.E. Mahama must not shift the goalpost. Sign the bill as you have pledged to Ghanaians,” he asserted.
President Mahama, speaking on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, during a visit from the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, provided clarity on his position.
He explained that the initial Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, introduced as a Private Members’ Bill during the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration, had not reached his desk due to legal and procedural challenges.
He emphasised the need for a unified approach among stakeholders, advocating for dialogue to chart a mutually acceptable course.
“The Bill died with the 8th Parliament, but I think we need to have a conversation on that. But I think it should not be a Private Member’s Bill, but a government-sponsored one.
“If we were teaching our values in schools, we wouldn’t need to pass a bill to enforce our family values,” he explained.
He added that “And that is why I think more than even the family values bill, is us agreeing on a curriculum that inculcates these values into our children as they are growing up so that we don’t need to legislate it.”
During the 2024 Election campaign, Mahama expressed a cautious stance, stating that his decision to assent to the bill would be based on a thorough review of its content.
“It is not an anti-LGBTQI Bill; it is a Family Values Bill. It was approved unanimously by our Parliament. [LGBTQI] is against our African culture, it is against our religious faith, but I think we must look at the Bill, and the president must indicate what he finds wrong with that bill and send it back to Parliament or alternatively he must send it to the Council of State and get the Council of State’s advice,” he said.
He added that had he been president when the bill was passed by Parliament on February 28, 2024, he would have sought a detailed examination of its provisions and consulted with relevant advisory bodies.
The bill, which passed in Parliament in 2024, proposes harsher penalties for consensual same-sex conduct and criminalizes individuals and organisations advocating for LGBTQ+ rights.

Privatisation will solve Ghana’s electricity challenges

Dr Ernest Sanyare Warmann Beinpuo, a Nuclear Regulatory Scientist has described as a “misguided,” belief that privatising the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) holds the key to solving Ghana electricity challenges.
President John Dramani Mahama recently indicated the possibility of privatising the country’s power distributor to help resolve longstanding challenges such as operational inefficiencies, financial mismanagement, and inadequate service delivery.
But Dr Beinpuo in an interview with Ghana News Agency strongly opposed any suggestion to privatise ECG saying, “Privatisation does not guarantee efficiency or affordability.”
“Instead, it often leads to higher tariffs and reduced access for low-income households. If the government is considering privatisation, they should begin by addressing inefficiencies in the generation and transmission sectors, which are significant contributors to the country’s power problems, before even thinking about handing over the distribution arm to private entities.”
The Radiation Protection expert believed ECG as a strategic national asset, had the potential to generate revenue, create jobs, and drive industrial growth if managed effectively and that privatising it risked handing over control of a critical public utility to private interests that prioritised profits over public welfare.
“The government should focus on implementing strong governance, addressing corruption, and investing in modern infrastructure to make ECG profitable and sustainable. Ghana’s energy future must remain in the hands of the state to ensure equitable and affordable electricity for all citizens.”
Dr Beinpuo said if the government could not manage such a vital national asset profitably, “then perhaps it is the government itself that needs restructuring, not ECG,” citing examples from China.
“The success of Chinese state institutions in managing electricity generation, transmission, and distribution profitably demonstrates that state-owned enterprises can thrive under competent management. These institutions also manage other critical sectors like water and telecommunications efficiently,” he said.

Ogyam Arrested After Spewing Lies Against The Late C-Confion And Dr Likee
Controversial social media commentator, Ogyam, has been arrested after making damaging allegations against popular Kumawood actor Dr Likee (Ras Nene) and the late C-Confion.

Reject ORAL Team Invitation- Minority Tells NPP Members
The Minority Caucus in Parliament has issued a stern warning to its members, urging them to decline any requests from the Oral Team, led by North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
According to the Suame MP, John Darko, the ORAL Team’s operations are unconstitutional and aimed at harassing former government officials.
Addressing a press conference at PARLIAMENT House, John Darko expressed concerns over the Team’s activities, stating that they are “putting the work of the police, EOCO, and Special Prosecutor out of business.”
He emphasized that the team’s actions are not only unconstitutional but also undermine the rule of law.
The Suame MP revealed that the Minister for Justice and Attorney General Designate, a law professor, had justified the Oral Team’s operations when he appeared before the appointments committee.
The Suame MP, John Darko found this justification alarming, stating that “as a law professor, he should have condemned it, but rather he justified it.”
Joh Darko warned that the Oral Team’s actions are a form of persecution targeted at former government officials.
He cited instances where the team had entered homes, seized vehicles, and taken over lands from individuals who had legally acquired them.
The Minority Caucus has advised its members to boycott any invitations from the Oral Team, emphasizing that they will not be part of any unconstitutional activities.
John Darko urged the people of Ghana to be aware of the Oral Team’s operations and not to tolerate any form of persecution or harassment.
The Oral Team, led by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has been at the center of controversy in recent times.
The team’s operations have been criticized by some as being partisan and targeted at former government officials.

During the event, the club’s President expressed concern over the low patronage of the Library and IT Center, which was donated to the community four years ago and offers free access to the public.

Ghanaian gospel musician, Joyce Blessing, has narrated the ordeal she went through in the early stages of her life.
In an interview on Hitz FM on January 15, 2025, Joyce Blessing explained that she had to sell water and second-hand clothing at some point in order to survive.
Joyce Blessing added that she left home at an early stage because life was difficult for her mother, who single-handedly raised three children.
“From the beginning, it was very hard for me. If I tell people that I used to sell pure water, they don’t believe me. Sometimes I would sell second-hand clothes, brooms, and gari. In fact, we sold anything that we came across. And I did this with my sister. My parents didn’t even know how I got to Accra. They got to know when someone informed my mother about a song I did which became a hit. At that time, phones were not as common as they are now. But I am sure she wept when she heard the news.
“My mother gave birth to five children but three stayed with her. Life was difficult, so, some went to school while others like myself stayed behind to sell. So, I have been selling on the streets and people who knew me then now address me by Akos. Anytime I am on the street and I see these people selling, I can give them the last money on me and I don’t even buy fuel,” she said.
The “Oluwa Is Involved” hitmaker also shared the saddest moment in her life regarding her father.
“The saddest moment in my life was when I went searching for my father. I walked from home in search of him. And I didn’t get money when returning because I didn’t meet him and I didn’t know anyone around there. So, I had to walk from Abuakwa to Tafo… When I got home, I was crying and when my mother asked, I couldn’t say anything and she also started crying. Up to date, anytime I remember the incident and how far God has brought me, I begin to cry,” she added.

The vandalisation of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s statue at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi made international news headlines.
Unknown individuals completely destroyed the statue on Monday, January 13, 2025.
Before the destruction of the statue, residents of Sekondi had threatened to have it moved because the former president had done nothing for them to merit the erection of the statue in their community.
President Akufo-Addo faced significant criticisms after unveiling the statue on November 6, 2024, with many accusing him of self-glorification.
The British state broadcaster, the BBC, reported the destruction of Akufo-Addo’s statue with an interesting perspective.

Statue of ex-Ghana President Akufo-Addo destroyed
A statue of Ghana’s immediate former President, Nana Akufo-Addo, put up at the end of last year has been destroyed.
The unveiling by Akufo-Addo of his own likeness in November in the country’s Western Region sparked a social media backlash, as well as being mocked and described as “self-glorification”.
Its launch had been in honour of the president’s development initiatives.
On Monday, local media shared images showing the statue in a ruined state, with its severed head lying on the ground. It is not clear who had targeted the sculpture or what the motive was and the police have not commented.
The torso also appears to have been destroyed, and only a damaged pedestal remains in place.
The statue was made of a mixture of metal, wire mesh, clay, fibre glass and resin, the sculptor Justice Gaisie said.
Akufo-Addo stepped down as president last week after serving two terms in power. His party’s candidate to replace him was heavily defeated in December’s presidential election.
The statue had already been partially vandalised last month with one leg being damaged.
The statue of the former president was unveiled in November
Some local residents had earlier been calling for the sculpture to be removed, but the local authorities had pledged at the time of the initial damage to have it repaired.
Its destruction has elicited mixed reactions, with some condemning it while others saying there could have been a better way to deal with it.
One resident told local Citi FM outlet that it was “of no benefit” to the people, “so if it’s destroyed, its normal”.
Another said this was unfortunate and there should have been a “proper, civil way to get it removed” adding that that the action would have negative consequences for supporters of the former president’s party.
Joy FM quoted another resident saying he was happy it had been destroyed.
Last year, critics questioned the use of public funds for its construction especially at a time the country was facing economic hardship.
Ghana has in recent years been experiencing its worst economic crisis in a generation and last year received a $3bn (£2.5bn) bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The cost-of-living crisis was a key campaign issue in last month’s election.
President John Mahama, who won the vote in a landslide, has in the past criticised the erection of the statue.
He said it was up to the people to honour the former president for his achievements, describing the statue as insensitive given the hardships being faced by the people.

Trade Fair demolition cost me US$10 million, but I have moved on – Raymond Archer
Raymond Archer, renowned investigative journalist
The Chief Executive Officer of Universal Labels & Packaging Company Limited and Colour Planet Limited, Raymond Archer, has disclosed that he lost about US$10 million in investments due to a demolition exercise authorised by the management of the Ghana Trade Fair Company Limited.
The exercise, which took place in 2020, affected his business and led to the demolition of numerous structures at the Trade Fair site.
Victims of the demolition have since been complaining about job losses and property destruction, criticising the Trade Fair Company for failing to provide adequate notice to evacuate their belongings from the affected premises.
Although the Trade Fair Company Limited has maintained that the exercise was necessary for a redevelopment project, Raymond Archer criticised the destruction, labeling it as unfair during a recent interview with Accra-based Channel One TV on January 14, 2025.
“I lost about US$10 million at the Trade Fair, but my life has moved on…I never crumbled or crashed,” Archer stated.
When asked if he harbored any resentment toward the management of the Trade Fair Company, Archer responded, “I don’t have a fight with them. I just deplore the way they did it, and I hate the fact that power is used to do some of these things.”
The renowned investigative journalist, was recently nominated by President John Dramani Mahama to serve as part of a five-member team leading the National Democratic Congress’s Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative.
ORAL is designed as a comprehensive strategy to address systemic corruption and financial impropriety.
It will focus on recovering misappropriated funds and resources as part of efforts to strengthen governance, restore public trust in state institutions, and provide much-needed fiscal space for national development.

Red Sea dive-boat survivors accuse authorities of cover up
Survivors of a deadly dive-boat sinking in the Red Sea say they were pressured to sign official witness statements in Arabic – which they couldn’t understand and had been translated from English by an employee of the boat company.
They say the man also tried to get them to sign waivers which stated they did not accuse anyone of “criminal wrongdoing”.
The 11 survivors who have spoken to the BBC have also accused the Egyptian authorities of trying to cover up what happened, saying investigators were determined to blame it on a huge wave.
The Sea Story had been carrying 46 people when it sank in the early hours of 25 November last year – four bodies were recovered and seven people are still missing, including two British divers.
Neither the Egyptian government nor the boat operators – Dive Pro Liveaboard, based in Hurghada – have responded to our questions.
On Tuesday, the BBC revealed multiple accusations from survivors of safety failings on board the vessel. A leading oceanographer who analysed weather data also said it was not plausible that a huge wave had hit the vessel.
‘Interrogated’ from hospital beds
Within hours of being brought ashore, survivors say they were subjected to what one described as “an interrogation”, some from their hospital beds, by people they were told were judges.
Those who didn’t need hospital treatment were interviewed at a nearby resort, said other survivors, who reported the same feelings of being pressured.
“We were told we couldn’t leave the room until they’d done everybody’s statements,” says Sarah Martin, an NHS doctor from Lancashire.
The judges were part of an Egyptian investigation into what caused the sinking – though survivors say it was not clear exactly who was leading it.
The survivors say having their initial statements translated into Arabic by an employee of the company that owned the Sea Story was a clear conflict of interest.
Spanish diver Hissora Gonzalez said the man did not initially introduce himself as an employee. “He just said, ‘You have to tell me what happened, and then you have to sign this piece of paper.'”
It was not until later, say several people we spoke to, that the man told them he worked for Dive Pro Liveaboard.
The survivors say that, after being translated by the man, their statements were handed to investigators – something that shocked Lisa Wolf. “A normal judge can’t take a translation from someone that’s obviously totally involved in the process.”
One survivor, who is a Norwegian police investigator, said she had “no clue” what the four pages of Arabic handed back to her actually said. “They could have written anything. I don’t know what I signed,” Frøydis Adamson explained. Under her signature she says she wrote that she had not been able to read the documents.
“We were in such shock and just wanted to go home,” said Hissora.
‘Release of liability document’
Representatives of the boat operators, Dive Pro Liveaboard, also repeatedly tried to push people into signing waivers – say survivors – which would have seen them agreeing to the statement: “I do not accuse anyone of any criminal wrongdoing.”
Justin Hodges, an American diver who was also rescued, told us the “release of liability document”, written in English, was handed to him as he was giving his witness statement.
He said he had thought the person he was talking to was “an official”, but at this point learned that he worked for the company.
“He slid in with the authorities,” says Justin. “The fact he tried to get us to release liability at that moment was insane to me.”
At least some of the people we spoke to didn’t sign the document.
Everyone we spoke to said they had not been allowed to keep copies of their statements, but the BBC was told some people had managed to translate the documents with their phones. Many of those told us that key, damning details which they had conveyed verbally were left out of the paperwork.
“Everything about the condition of the life rafts and safety issues on the boat went away,” says Lisa.
Sarah and Hissora reported the same experience. “They just put whatever they wanted,” says Hissora.
‘The only one responsible is the sea’
Survivors also say the authorities seemed determined to blame the tragedy on a huge wave from the outset.
That is despite many of those rescued saying the waves were not too big to stop them swimming. A leading oceanographer has told the BBC that contemporaneous meteorological data from the nearest airport strongly supports the survivors’ recollections.
Hissora asked if she could eventually see a copy of the investigators’ final report, but says she was told there was no need. “[It’s like] they already knew the cause was a wave,” she says.
When she asked again, Hissora said she was told “the only one responsible for this is the sea”. She believes the authorities had already made up their minds before the investigation had even begun.
Hissora’s concerns are shared by Sarah, who says the judges were also “very eager” that survivors didn’t blame anyone for the accident.
Multiple survivors say they were told that if they wanted to hold anyone responsible, they had to name an individual and specific crime of which they were accused.
“Just because I couldn’t name the person and the crime, it didn’t mean someone wasn’t to blame,” says Sarah.
A final attempt by Dive Pro Liveaboard to get survivors to sign waivers was made as one group tried to leave for Cairo, says Justin.
Having lost their passports at sea, he says the group was told by a company representative that the documents being presented to them were clearance papers to get through checkpoints.
“But then I get to the bottom and the last sentence is the same release of liability question,” – a repeat of the one he says he was asked to sign when he gave his witness statement.
Justin says he went to alert the others and, when he returned to the man who he believed was trying to mislead him, the papers had “magically disappeared” and been replaced with more official-looking documents.
“My blood was boiling,” he says.
The BBC has not seen the waiver documents or copies of them.
UK couple still missing
Among the missing are two Britons, Jenny Cawson and Tarig Sinada from Devon.
“They were the kindest, most caring and generous souls,” says Andy Williamson, a friend of the couple.
He says their family has constantly received partial and inaccurate news from the Egyptian government.
For example, after the disaster they say they were told the boat had not been found – despite the fact they saw on TV survivors from the wreck being brought ashore. They are calling for an open investigation.
“It would appear that Egyptian authorities are doing their very best to kind of sweep this under the carpet,” says Andy. “They want to protect their tourism industry.”
In March, a fire on another Dive Pro Liveaboard boat – the Sea Legend – killed a German tourist.
Last year, Maritime Survey International, an independent consultancy, produced a report on the safety of dive boats in the Red Sea. It inspected eight vessels, although not including any operated by Dive Pro Liveaboard, and found none had “a planned maintenance system, safety management system or stability books”, a crucial document for avoiding capsize.
It also found design standards to be “poor with all the vessels lacking watertight bulkheads, doors and hatches”.
It concluded that not a single vessel was safe and the dive boat industry in Egypt “plies its trade largely unregulated”.
Former Ashanti Regional Minister speaks on abandoned presidential villa
Former Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah has refuted claims of intentionally abandoning the Presidential Villa and the Regional Minister’s Bungalow at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC).
About five houses, including the Regional Minister’s residence and the Presidential Lodge, have reportedly been left unoccupied for eight years, leading to their deterioration.
On a visit to the facilities last week, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region alleged looting of some installations by the immediate-past administration and vowed to investigate and hold those responsible accountable.
However, Mr. Osei-Mensah, in a statement, explained that he inherited significant challenges upon assuming office on February 22, 2017.
He noted that neither the ARCC nor he would intentionally allow state assets to deteriorate.
He attributed the challenges to financial constraints beyond the ARCC’s control and reiterated his commitment to resolving these issues during his time in office.
He cited a GH¢1.5 million debt overhang, broken-down vehicles, outdated office equipment, a deteriorating administration block, and inadequate staff housing as key issues.
The former Minister indicated that he implemented strict expenditure controls and claimed that the ARCC was debt-free by the end of his tenure on January 6, 2025.
Regarding the state of official vehicles, Mr. Osei-Mensah revealed that he used his personal Land Cruiser for months as most vehicles were either broken down or lacked fuel.
Mr. Osei-Mensah also noted that steps were taken to repair the administration block, using the ARCC budget to fund renovations and securing central government support for a six-story building project, which is currently under construction.
For the residence, he stated that he used personal funds for minor repairs and sought government assistance, though only partial funding was received.
Brothers assaulted by mob for exhuming body of 10-year-old
Two brothers faced the wrath of an angry mob in Ashalaja after they were accused of exhuming the body of a 10-year-old child from a local cemetery.
The incident which occurred on Sunday, January 14, has sent shockwaves through the community.
Eyewitnesses say the brothers, Fofo Agboyemeh and Kwame Agboyemeh, exhumed the body of 10-year-old James Ajoyemeh, from a cemetery in Adewukwa, a community in Bawjiase.
But they were intercepted by ‘okada’ riders in Ashalaja around 1 a.m. following a tip-off leading to the assault by the mob.
The mob attacked the siblings, leaving them with severe injuries before they were rescued by the police.
The intervention of the Dankyira Police prevented the two from being killed.
The Awutu Bawjiase Police Command has since launched an investigation into the matter to determine the motive behind the exhumation and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The two brothers have been sent to the Bawjiase Polyclinic for treatment due to the severity of their injuries.
Community leaders have called for calm as the police continue their inquiries, urging residents to allow due process to take its course.
Mahama names Kofi Boakye, Prosper Bani, Charles Kipo in new security appointments
President John Dramani Mahama has announced a series of key security appointments aimed at strengthening national security and ensuring the safety of citizens.

Mahama Recalls Diplomatic Passports –
In a bold move, President Mahama’s administration has initiated a recall of Diplomatic and Service Passports issued by the previous administration, citing the need to prevent misuse and maintain the integrity of the diplomatic engagements.
This development is seen as a significant step towards ensuring that the country’s official travel documents are used responsibly and in line with national and international standards.
According to a letter signed by Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, the recall exercise is aimed at verifying the eligibility of holders of Diplomatic and Service Passports issued by the previous administration.
The letter directs the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to take several steps to facilitate the process, including issuing a public notice, setting a deadline for compliance, and conducting verification of returned passports.
The public notice is expected to inform all holders of Diplomatic and Service Passports issued by the previous administration to return these documents to the Ministry for verification and re-issuance, where applicable.
A deadline of January 24, 2025, has been set for compliance.
The Ministry is also required to conduct a thorough review of all returned passports to ensure that they align with the current eligibility criteria for issuance.

Signing of Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill: Is President Mahama flip-flopping?
Conversations and discussions about the controversial anti-LGBTQ bill have resurfaced under the newly installed government.
The bill dubbed the ‘Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values’, which was passed by the 8th Parliament, became a significant point of contention during the tenure of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
When the private members’ bill was passed with unanimous approval, many speculated that it might receive assent from then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, despite the controversy surrounding its criminalisation of homosexuality and its harsh provisions.
Things took an unexpected turn when several lawsuits were filed against the bill, leading to a delay in its signing. Eventually, the bill, which became an albatross for the previous government, remained just a bill and was not passed into law before Akufo-Addo left power.
During his campaign, John Dramani Mahama, who was the NDC’s presidential candidate at the time, expressed his disapproval of same-sex marriages and relationships, emphasising his commitment to ensuring that such practices would not be allowed under his government.
What he said during BBC interview
In December 2024, during an interview with the BBC, Mahama stated that a future NDC government would sign the anti-LGBTQ+ bill depending on its contents and specifics.
According to him, although LGBTQ+ activities do not align with the country’s culture, values, and religious beliefs, there must be thorough scrutiny of what the bill proposes and aims to enforce before it is signed into law.
“It is not an anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, but a Family Values Bill. It was approved unanimously by our Parliament. You see, it’s against our culture, I mean African culture, our religious faith – Muslim and Christian and all that. But I think we must look at the bill, and the president must indicate what he finds wrong with the bill and send the bill back to Parliament or alternatively, he must send it to the Council of State and get the Council of State’s advice,” he stated.
Asked by the interviewer if that is what he would have done, Mahama affirmatively said, “That’s what I would have done.”
What he said during meeting with clergy
During a meeting with the clergy in October 2024, John Dramani Mahama gave his assurance to the clergymen, indicating that under his presidency, such practices will not be tolerated.
“My fathers and mothers in Christ, the current legal impasse created by the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration on the Promotion of Proper Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Act, which was passed by Parliament, has set a dangerous precedence for our governance. The constitutional directive for action by the president are quite clear and need not have resulted in this stalemate.
“As I’ve publicly stated, I’m a proud member of the Assemblies of God Church and my faith does not support same-sex marriages or relationships (loud applause for over 20 seconds) nor does it support human-animal relationships, or does it allow people to change their gender as they wish. This is a fundamental belief that I hold and is grounded in my faith. I, therefore, assure you that the promotion of LGBTQ+ and all the pluses will have no place in our schools and communities under my administration,” he said.
However, President Mahama’s recent comments on the controversial topic have attracted attention and sparked widespread concern regarding his shift in position.
What Mahama is saying now
Addressing a delegation of Catholic bishops from the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference during a courtesy call on January 14, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama suggested a government-sponsored LGBTQ+ bill, as opposed to one led by private members.
According to him, making the anti-LGBTQ+ bill a government-sponsored initiative would allow the country’s cultural values to be integrated into various curricula taught to students and would remove the need for a separate bill aimed at enforcing family values in the country.
“I think it should not be a Private Member’s Bill, but a government-sponsored one. If we were teaching our values in schools, we wouldn’t need to pass a bill to enforce our family values, and that is why I think more than even the family values bill, is us agreeing on a curriculum that inculcates these values into our children as they are growing up, so that we don’t need to legislate it.
“I don’t know what the promoters of the bill intend to do, but I think we should have a conversation on it again so that all of us, if we decide to move on the way forward, we move forward with a consensus,” he said.
President Mahama highlighted the challenges encountered by the initial anti-LGBTQ+ bill, including legal and procedural issues.
“But as far as I know, the bill did not get to the president. And so, the convention is that all bills that are not ascended to before the expiration of the life of Parliaments expire. And so, that bill effectively is dead, it has expired,” he stated.

WAPCo postpones offshore pipeline maintenance works to February 3
The offshore pigging will start on February 3, 2025
The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has announced a revised schedule for its planned offshore pipeline cleaning and inspection exercise, commonly known as pigging.
Initially set to commence on January 20, 2025, the offshore pigging has been rescheduled to start on February 3, 2025, to better accommodate the interests of key stakeholders.
The four-week exercise will involve the temporary suspension of reverse gas flow from Ghana’s Western Region to Tema, also in Ghana, and the shutdown of key facilities in Tema, Ghana; Lomé, Togo; and Cotonou, Benin.
During this shutdown period, WAPCo will replace subsea valves located at these strategic locations to enhance operational safety.
In a press release dated Wednesday, January 15, 2025, it said, “The comprehensive cleaning and inspection exercise is a key regulatory requirement and aligns with industry best practices to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP).”
“The project encompasses the entire pipeline infrastructure, from Itoki in Ogun State, Nigeria, to Takoradi in the Western Region, Ghana. The cleaning exercise is in two phases. The first phase, completed in December 2024, involved cleaning and inspecting the onshore section of the pipeline within Nigeria,” it added.
The second phase, scheduled to run from February 3 to March 2, 2025, will focus on the offshore section of the WAGP, stretching from Badagry, Lagos State, Nigeria, to Takoradi, Western Region, Ghana.
WAPCo is required to conduct these inspections every five years, as part of efforts to maintain the integrity of the WAGP and ensure its continued safe and reliable operation across the West African region.

Speaking in an interview with Angel TV, Badu shed light on the situation and revealed that his teammate Latif Salifu was the sole beneficiary of the insurance policy.
“Only one person benefited. My friend Latif Salifu got injured, and when he approached them, he was able to access his insurance,” Badu stated.
Latif Salifu later confirmed this claim in an interview with Happy FM, explaining how he managed to claim the benefits.
“We didn’t know our money was being used for insurance, nor did we know we could access it in emergencies. When I discovered this in 2019, I was injured, so I worked to claim mine to cover my treatment,” Salifu said.
The controversy stems from a $750,000 bonus package announced for the team following their historic triumph at the U-20 World Cup in Egypt in 2009.

Relatives wait for news as body bags hauled from South African mine
Relatives, union staff and members of the local community have been protesting outside the mine
Rescuers have spent Tuesday pulling body bags and survivors from a South African mine where scores of illegal miners are still thought to be at least 2km (1.2 miles) underground.
Eighty-two people have surfaced alive from the shaft in Stilfontein since the rescue mission began on Monday, police say, while 36 dead bodies have been retrieved.
On Tuesday, the BBC saw dozens of emaciated miners – wearing tattered clothes and no shoes or socks – being escorted to a medical tent.
Some of the body bags appeared so light that they were only carried by one person.
This story contains a video that some people may find distressing.
The men have been underground since police operations targeting illicit mining started last year across the country.
More than 100 of the illegal miners, known locally as “zama zamas”, have reportedly died underground since the crackdown on their activities began at the mine some 145km (90 miles) south-west of Johannesburg last year.
The authorities however, have not confirmed this figure as it is yet to be “verified by an official source”, a spokesperson told the BBC.
Relatives and community members have been protesting at the mining site, armed with placards urging the authorities to rescue the miners.
They look weary and tell the BBC on Tuesday that they have tired of speaking to the media.
Zinzi Tom explained that her 29-year-old brother, Ayanda, went down the mine in June because he was unemployed and wanted to make a living.
“We questioned whether he should do it, but he’s of age, he can do whatever he wants. But now that’s not the point. The point is that we want to save him. We want him out,” she said.
Some of the miners that managed to escape have told Ms Tom that her brother is not well. She hopes he will be one those rescued soon.
Ms Tom describes her brother as quiet and private, adding: “I need to be strong for him, because I can’t be weak now. He needs me more than ever.”
The mood among the relatives outside the mine turned sour when a convoy carrying Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe and the police minister arrived at the site.
The government has been criticised for taking a hard line on the illegal miners by blocking their food and water supplies. They also shut off all but one of the mine’s exits.
Last week a court ordered the government to facilitate a rescue operation that had been long-delayed.
The authorities have defended their robust response to the miners and in a press conference outside the mine Mantashe said the “fight against illegal mining” should be intensified.
“It’s a crime against the economy, it’s an attack on the economy,” he said.
Sanco, a national umbrella body for NGOs, has been sending volunteers down the shaft with the rescue teams and advocating for the miners.
“We had initially requested that we take out the dead bodies first, so that we avoid a situation where they decompose to an extent that their families cannot identify them anymore, because these are the dead bodies which have been there for quite some time,” Sanco provincial spokesperson Mzukisi Jam told the BBC.
He added that they are also prioritising getting out the very sick and have sent some food and water down the shaft.
On Monday, disturbing videos emerged showing the dire situation at the disused gold mine.
In one of the films, which the BBC has not independently verified, corpses wrapped in makeshift body bags can be seen. A second shows the emaciated figures of some miners who are still alive.
During the press conference, Mantashe said that in 2024 the trade of illicit precious metal was estimated at $2.4bn (£2bn).
Mantashe also attempted to talk to the protesters but was drowned out by angry speeches.
There is a feeling at Stilfontein that more could have been done to prevent the build-up of the dozens of corpses said to be underground.

Keta has 15, Hohoe has 14, while South Dayi, Ketu North, and South Tongu, each has 13 applicants each.

On the lowest frequencies are Akatsi North with four, Akatsi South, six, and the Adaklu District with eight applications.
The regional vetting committee has been tasked to consider customary, geographical, and ethnic composition in ensuring a balanced distribution of power.

Colonel Festus B. Aboagye (Retired), a renowned security analyst, has expressed concern about former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s decision to elevate a number of military officers to higher positions, including Ghana’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Thomas Oppong-Peprah to a 4-Star General, shortly before end of term in January 2025.
Discussions over the necessity of the promotions and their effects on Ghana’s military performance have been triggered by the policy brief “Counting Stars—The Paradox of Sporadic Military Rank Inflation In Ghana’s Democracy,” which was just released.
“When symbols outweigh substance, authority loses its foundation” was the subtitle of the brief in which Col. Aboagye criticized the promotions’ timing and rationale, claiming that they were out of step with Ghana’s contemporary defense reality.
With Ghana’s military strength at about 30,000 soldiers (ranked 113th in the world), a meager defense budget of US$300 million (down 5.4% from 2023), and unfunded plans for critical operational units, he said, “these high-level promotions appear disconnected from institutional needs and current security challenges.”
According to the research, despite the military’s comparatively moderate expansion in size and budget over the past 20 years, the number of generals in the Ghanaian Armed Forces has significantly increased. Between 2004 and 2024, the force strength increased just little, from slightly over 20,000 to less than 30,000 personnel, but the number of General Officer positions more than doubled, from 56 to 125.
Col. Aboagye called this tendency unhelpful, saying, “The number of generals over the past 20 years seems to be inversely proportional to military capability—more stars in command, less capacity to shine on the battlefield.”
Also criticized in the policy brief is the promotion process’s absence of parliamentary scrutiny. The Defense Minister, Col. Aboagye, reported this to the Defense and Interior Committee during a hearing on the budget, without obtaining the necessary parliamentary approval. He highlighted Ghana’s history of military political interventions and said, “This circumvention of democratic processes raises critical questions about civil-military relations and democratic oversight.”
Although the promotions might have been meant to improve Ghana’s military reputation abroad, Col. Aboagye cautioned that without matching expenditures on military equipment and capabilities, they run the risk of compromising operational efficacy and professionalism. Ghana’s intentions to expand its military by adding new infantry brigades, combat support formations, and special operations units between 2015 and 2024 are still mostly unfulfilled, he noted.
The policy brief urges immediate changes to match military promotions to the defense requirements of the country. The paper suggests that it is crucial to establish explicit standards for promotions that are based on operational requirements, force structure, and available resources. Additionally, it recommends putting money into real fighting capabilities rather than ceremonial rank inflation.
The revelations in Col. Aboagye’s analysis have reignited public discourse on the balance between symbolism and substance in Ghana’s military leadership. As the nation continues to grapple with evolving security challenges, many stakeholders are urging policymakers to reconsider the relationship between rank, resources, and readiness in the Ghana Armed Forces.

‘I was scammed’ – Ahuofe Patri calls out food company over fraud concerns

Ghanaian actress and brand influencer Priscilla Opoku Agyeman, popularly known as Ahuofe Patri, has recounted a shocking experience of being scammed while attempting to order fried rice and chicken from the renowned restaurant, Papaye.
In a video, the former “Boys Kasa” series star shared how hunger struck during a film shoot, prompting her to order food.
“The restaurant was close by, but I didn’t want to risk leaving the set and disrupting the schedule, so I decided to order delivery instead,” she recounted.
While searching online for Papaye’s contact information, she was connected with someone who claimed to represent the restaurant.
“They asked me to make payment before delivery, and even though I was hesitant, I decided to go ahead,” Ahuofe explained.
After sending the payment, she received a code via SMS with instructions not to share it with anyone. Shortly afterwards, she received another call demanding the code.
“I told them I wasn’t comfortable giving out the code, but they insisted it was necessary to complete the transaction,” she narrated.
Reluctantly, Ahuofe provided the code, only to realize moments later that she had fallen victim to scammers.
“I received multiple messages authorizing a withdrawal of 300 cedis from my account. I quickly cancelled the transaction,” she said.
Determined to get her meal, Ahuofe drove to the restaurant and purchased the food herself. However, she was shocked by the response she received when she raised her concerns.
“I told the staff what had happened, and they informed me that other customers had also been scammed. But what shocked me the most was their indifference. They didn’t involve a manager or show any urgency to address the issue,” she lamented.

“We are a debt-ridden country in a financial crisis and state institutions are doing this? What is the sense in this and how will it benefit the country? It is disgusting and an eye-sore,” he fumed.
According to Pratt, there are more appropriate ways for these state institutions to show support for the country’s new leadership.
He specifically mentioned that the leaders of these institutions could focus on working hard to improve the growth and development of the institutions they manage.
“If you want to show love to the president, work hard to improve the institutions you are managing. That is a perfect display of love, not the full-page color adverts they are doing. It has no benefit; it is just a waste of funds and resources.”
He continued, “I wouldn’t have minded if these were limited to the president and his vice, but now the bar has been lowered, and even MPs-elect are given that platform. Where did we learn this behavior from?”
Pratt suggested that the country might want to be cautious about wasting funds and resources, especially as the economy faces its challenges, and perhaps consider adopting approaches that could help manage funds more wisely.
“We have to understand that the country is facing hardships so do things that are necessary and not engage in needless things. The amount for these full-page color adverts is exorbitant. Did their various budgets include these adverts? What a mess,” he concluded.

Removing betting tax could scupper IMF program

Member of Parliament for Tano North constituency, Dr. Gideon Boako, has advised President John Dramani Mahama against the removal of betting tax, e-levy, and other taxes.
According to him, scrapping these taxes could threaten Ghana’s deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, as it would have a negative impact.
The MP indicated that removing these taxes would require introducing new ones, which he is against due to its economic implications.
“We don’t want a situation where you give with one hand and take with the other. They need to be explicit. If they cut taxes, they should not introduce new ones. You can’t cancel e-levy and betting tax and then create another tax to fill the gap.
“If they indeed want to scrap e-levy, betting tax, COVID-19 tax, and emission taxes, the only way to match the debt service to revenue ratio, as required by the IMF program, is to introduce another tax to make up for the shortfall. Otherwise, they don’t have room for maneuver,” he said in an interview with Citi News.
This warning comes after Minister-designate for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, promised to abolish the betting tax, citing its ineffectiveness in preventing youth involvement in betting.
Ato Forson clarified that removing the betting tax would not severely impact the Ghanaian economy, considering the revenue it generates.

After denying the allegations, Palmer claimed he was not contacted again regarding the case, implying that it is no longer being pursued.
In an interview with Asempa FM, Palmer noted that despite the challenges he faced under Okraku’s administration, he hold nothing against him.
“Kurt reported me, claiming I wanted to take his life. My friends know I’m not capable of such a thing. I was invited to the regional police headquarters, where they informed me of Kurt’s accusations, citing our past issues.
“I told them I hold no grudges, having put the past behind me. Since then, the police haven’t contacted me, and the case seems to have died down naturally. He took me to the IGP,” Palmer said in Twi.
Okraku has faced criticism from some football stakeholders since becoming GFA president in 2019, with some believing he has not treated them fairly.

John Jinapor makes u-turn on Gold for Oil policy after calling it a scam
Minister of Energy-designate, John Jinapor, made a surprising retreat over the Gold for Oil policy when he appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 13, 2025.
The policy, introduced by the previous government in February 2023 and championed by then Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to mitigate Ghana’s forex crisis and stabilize fuel prices, was heavily criticized by John Jinapor, then Minority Spokesperson on Mines and Energy.
In a post on his X account in November 2023, which was widely reported in the media, Jinapor lambasted Dr. Bawumia for introducing the Gold for Oil policy, describing it as a “scam.”
“When we cautioned them, Dr. Bawumia’s response was, ‘Gold-for-oil is an initiative the textbooks won’t teach you.’ G4Oil was nothing but a scam! The BoG is now seeking to end it,” Jinapor posted on X, referencing a purported intention by the Bank of Ghana to discontinue the policy, which the Central Bank denied at the time.
However, during his appearance before the Appointments Committee, John Jinapor intriguingly embraced the policy he once dismissed as a scam.
“What we will do is review it, analyze it, and ensure that we develop a model that is fit for purpose and guarantees accountability for the gold,” Jinapor said.

The President has also named COP Nathan Kofi Boakye (Rtd.) as Director of Operations at the Presidency, where he will oversee operational effectiveness in security matters. COP Boakye is renowned for his decades of service and operational acumen.
Additionally, Charles Kipo has been appointed Director General of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), a critical role that focuses on intelligence gathering and analysis to preempt security threats.

Accra, Jan 15, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the recall of Diplomatic and Service Passports issued by the previous Akufo-Addo’s administration.
Dr Callistus Mahama, the Executive Secretary to the President, in a letter addressed to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, made available to the Ghana News Agency, said the exercise aligned with the Government’s commitment to ensuring the proper use and administration of official travel documents by national and international standards.
“The recall aims to prevent misuse, safeguard the country’s reputation and maintain the integrity of our diplomatic engagement.”
It directed the Ministry to take a number of steps to facilitate the process.
These include issuing a public notice – notifying all holders of Diplomatic and Service Passports issued by the previous administration to return these documents to the Ministry for ‘and re-issuance, where applicable.
Set a Deadline for Compliance: Specify a reasonable timeline for all concerned individuals to comply with the recall latest by 24th January, 2025.
Conduct Verification:
Undertake a thorough review of all returned passports to ensure that they align with the current eligibility criteria for Issuance.
“Your cooperation and expedient action in this regard will contribute significantly to maintaining the credibility and efficiency of our country’s passport system,” the statement said.
“Do not hesitate to contact my office for any further clarification or assistance you may need in executing this important exercise.”

Mahama Hints Of Appointing New Security Chiefs This Week
President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to appoint new security chiefs this week, marking a significant shift in the country’s security leadership.
