Minority decries skewed road allocations in mid-year budget

0

The Minority in Parliament has criticised the John Dramani Mahama administration over what it describes as a grossly unbalanced allocation of road projects under the 2025 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review.

According to the caucus, the so-called “Big Push Programme” omits key economic zones such as Greater Accra and Ashanti, which together host more than a third of Ghana’s population.

Speaking on behalf of the caucus, Ranking Member on the Roads and Transportation Committee, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, said the regional bias in the list of projects undermines equitable development.

“It is unacceptable that Greater Accra and Ashanti — the engine rooms of our economy — have been sidelined in this plan,” he stated. “This is a matter of national concern, not partisan grievance.”

The caucus pointed out that critical infrastructure such as the Accra–Kumasi Road, which experiences the highest traffic volumes in the country, has been ignored in the current review.

Damaged sections of this corridor continue to cause major delays for commuters and traders alike. The absence of planned dualisation works at Osino, Nsawam, Enyeresi, and Konongo further compounds the problem.

Also absent are essential links like the Atebubu–Kwame Danso Road and ongoing works at Anwia Nkwanta in Kumasi, both of which had seen progress under previous budget cycles.

“The silence on these corridors tells us the government has no intention of completing what was already started,” Mr. Nyarko added.

The Minority has urged the government to realign its priorities to reflect actual national needs. “Infrastructure planning must follow data and demand — not political expediency,” he said.

“Ghanaians deserve transparency, fairness, and strategic thinking, not a haphazard list designed for headlines.”

London & NY Host EMY Africa’s 10th Anniversary

A scene from the soirée

London became the beating heart of African excellence this July, as EMY Africa brought its 10th anniversary celebrations to the British capital with a powerful blend of intellect, elegance, and diaspora unity.

From policy discussions and business innovation to soulful performances and red carpet moments, the weekend brought together changemakers and icons in a way that only EMY Africa can.

In partnership with the Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), EMY Africa started the weekend by hosting the Africa Rising Symposium on Saturday, July 19, 2025, under the theme “Beyond Potential: Africa’s Age of Performance.”

The esteemed Sheikh Zayed Theatre transformed into a hub of ideas and leadership, where some of the most respected voices in African business, governance, and culture took centre stage for panels, fireside chats, and high-level exchanges. Conversations spanned sustainable infrastructure, diaspora investment, creative economies, and homegrown reform.

Some of the most compelling sessions featured Dr. James Orleans-Lindsay, who delivered a deeply personal keynote address about building beyond rhetoric, and Alex Dadey, who delivered a candid fireside chat about scaling a business empire in Africa.

Other speakers include Joe Kinvi (Founder, Borderless), Ope Onibokun (Investment Director, British International Investment), Timothy Folaranmi (Managing Associate, Mishcon de Reya LLP), Bell Ribeiro-Addy (MP, UK House of Commons), Fred Rugamba (Visiting Rwanda), Guy Kioni (CEO, Missang), Taponeswa Mavunga (Sony UK), Nyasha Michelle (BBC Journalist), Richard Mofe-Damijo (Actor & Producer), and Chris Albert-Soboh (Editor-in-Chief, EMY Africa Magazine).

And as the lights dimmed at the symposium, the scene shifted across town to The Waldorf Hilton the next day for the EMY Africa Soirée, an invite-only gathering of elegance, storytelling, and a vibrant celebration. Set against a backdrop of live music and curated cultural moments, the soirée was a reunion of excellence. Glasses clinked, style reigned, and conversations sparked future collaborations across the diaspora.

The soirée hosted an influential cast of special guests: Dr. James Orleans-Lindsay, 2024 Man of the Year & Executive Chairman of JL Holdings; Alex Dadey, 2023 Man of the Year & Executive Chairman of KGL Group; legendary Nollywood actor Richard Mofe-Damijo; Lady Princess Bright, Mayor of Barking and Dagenham; British TV icon Rudolf Walker; bestselling author and spiritual leader Touré Roberts; fashion designer David Wej; celebrated speaker Michelle McKinney Hammond; Ghanaian international band The Compozers, among many others.

Just a week before London, EMY Africa landed for the first time in the United States with the Africa Rising Symposium at New York (NY) University on Friday, July 11. Under the theme “Voices of a Rising Continent,” the event turned the spotlight on the African diaspora’s growing role in shaping the global narrative through finance, fashion, storytelling, and policymaking.

By Prince Acquah

Komenda (C/R), July 28, GNA – Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang received a rousing heroine’s welcome on Sunday as she visited her hometown, Komenda, for the first time since assuming office seven months ago.

Her historic achievement as Ghana’s first female Vice President has brought immense pride to the ancient coastal town and the nation.

Hundreds of jubilant residents lined the streets and gathered at the forecourt of the chief’s palace, cheering, singing, and dancing as she made her way to the Palace of Okatakyi Komeh VIII, Omanhen of Komenda, and his council of chiefs. She responded with waves and warm smiles, visibly moved by the heartfelt reception.

The event took on a festive atmosphere as Prof. Opoku-Agyemang returned home to officially thank the chiefs and people for their unwavering support during her campaign and subsequent rise to the high office.

She was accompanied by Mr. Ekow Panyin Okyere Eduamoah, Central Regional Minister; Madam Abla Dzifah Gomashie, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture; Madam Maame Efua Houadjeto, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority; Members of Parliament, District Chief Executives, and regional heads of security agencies.

Addressing the traditional leaders, the Vice President expressed appreciation for their contributions to the National Democratic Congress’ resounding victory in the 2024 general election.

“We were amazed by our landslide victory,” she said, calling for continued collaboration, prayers, and wise counsel to help the government realize its vision for the country.

In response to a passionate appeal from the Omanhen regarding the Komenda Sugar Factory, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reviving the factory to create jobs and stimulate economic growth in the area.

She also assured the people that government would address pressing issues in other sectors such as roads, education, and fisheries, while emphasizing the need for patience as developmental projects roll out. She stressed that the government would ensure equitable distribution of national resources.

Okatakyi Komeh VIII congratulated the Vice President on her historic achievement and pledged his continued support. He emphasized the importance of reviving the Komenda Sugar Factory, describing it as a “critical national asset” and cautioned against allowing it to become a white elephant.

The Omanhen also highlighted challenges in the community, including poor road infrastructure and the deteriorating condition of the Komenda College of Education. He appealed for support to rehabilitate these facilities and called for the expansion of the local fishing bay to accommodate more canoes. He further invited the Vice President to participate in the community’s upcoming festival.

As a symbolic gesture, Okatakyi Komeh presented the Vice President with a Bible, encouraging her to seek divine guidance in her leadership journey.

Mr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Board Chairman of Ghana COCOBOD, also addressed the gathering, expressing gratitude for the community’s support during the election campaign. He praised Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s vision and leadership, noting her role in inspiring women across all sectors, especially in education.

“Women are key to effective governance, and it is evident in the progress we are witnessing,” he stated. “Under the leadership of President John Mahama and Vice President Opoku-Agyemang, Ghana is on a path to greater prosperity.”

He added: “Every objective observer will acknowledge the remarkable improvements in our livelihoods in such a short period—unprecedented in the history of any government.”

24-Hour economy holds key to agribusiness growth – Trade Minister

0

Minister for Trade, Agribusinesses and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has reiterated the government’s commitment to transforming the agribusiness sector through inclusive and sustainable industrial growth, leveraging the 24-hour economy initiative

Speaking at the National Agribusiness Dialogue held on Monday, July 28, 2025, under the theme “Resetting Agribusiness for Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Growth,” Madam Ofosu-Adjare said the government’s new policy direction presents a unique opportunity to accelerate productivity and value addition across the agriculture value chain.

“In line with this ambition, the government’s 24-hour economy offers an exciting and complementary strategic opportunity to amplify the transformative change we seek within the agribusiness sector,” she said.

She explained that round-the-clock operations, particularly in agro-processing, logistics, storage, and market access, would help boost efficiency, reduce post-harvest losses, and promote continuous value addition.

According to the Minister, these interventions are part of a broader national strategy to modernize agriculture and fully integrate smallholder farmers, agripreneurs, and SMEs into a resilient, globally competitive economy.

“Together, these initiatives will not only expand employment opportunities across the entire agriculture value chain, but also ensure that agripreneurs and SMEs are fully integrated into a modern, resilient, and globally competitive economy,” she noted.

She further emphasised that the government’s industrial agenda is driven by a commitment to purpose, inclusivity, and sustainability.

“It is yet another demonstration of our president’s resolve to industrialise with purpose, inclusivity, and sustainability at the core,” Madam Ofosu-Adjare said.

The Minister called on stakeholders across the agribusiness ecosystem to contribute boldly and constructively during the dialogue.

“As we engage in this dialogue, I urge all stakeholders to contribute boldly and constructively. Let us share ideas, challenge assumptions, and think creatively about what the future of agribusiness in Ghana should look like,” she concluded.

The National Agribusiness Dialogue brought together key players in the agriculture, trade, and industry sectors to explore innovative solutions for advancing Ghana’s agribusiness landscape in alignment with the country’s industrialisation agenda.

Political interference fuelling Bawku conflict

0

Dr Vladimir Antwi-Danso is a renowned expert in Security and International Relations Dr Vladimir Antwi-Danso is a renowned expert in Security and International Relations

A renowned expert in Security and International Relations, Dr Vladimir Antwi-Danso, has stated that the primary factor driving the persistent conflict in Bawku is political interference.

In an interview with Channel One Newsroom on July 27, 2025, he cautioned that military deployments alone are not sufficient to combat or resolve the crisis emphasising that the underlying political tensions must be confronted directly.

Dr Antwi-Danso further noted that the government’s continued reliance on military and police interventions has yielded minimal results, ultimately failing to address the root cause fueling the conflict.

“Military presence, police presence in their numbers have failed to solve the problem. There are several pillars propping up the conflict. It could be history that has not been properly related, and we’re adding on and twisting history”, a report by citinewsroom on July 27 quoted him as saying.

“It may even be the way the media has handled the issue. It may be the people themselves or intra-community miscommunication. It could be politics,” he added.

He further stated that political influence lies at the heart of the Bawku crisis, warning that unless these interferences are dismantled or brought to an end, the conflict will persist despite continuous security interventions.

“In the Bawku case, politics is one of the greatest beams supporting the conflict,” he said.

“So, until you remove these props one by one for the conflict triangle to fall, you have done nothing. So, using the military often is only a stopgap,” he stressed.

His remarks follow recent violence in Bawku which tragically claimed the lives of several students from Bawku Senior High School.

Following this incident, the government has imposed a curfew and ordered the evacuation of students from high-risk conflict zones.

Google Announces $37m AI Funding Support Across Africa, Opens Accra AI Community Centre

0

James Manyika and Yossi Matias

Google has outlined a wave of AI support across Africa, representing $37 million in cumulative funding — including previously committed but unannounced funding — to research, talent development, and infrastructure.

The funding package includes funding and partnerships that aim to strengthen AI research, support African languages, improve food systems, expand digital skills, and build research capacity.

The AI Collaborative for Food Security, a multi-partner initiative launched with $25 million in funding from Google.org will bring together researchers, and nonprofit organizations to co-develop AI tools for early hunger forecasting, crop resilience, and tailored guidance for smallholder farmers.

The goal is to help make food systems across Africa more adaptive, equitable, and resilient in the face of increasing climate and economic shocks.

Google also announced $3 million in funding to the Masakhane Research Foundation, the open research collective advancing AI tools in over 40 African languages. The funding will support the development of high-quality datasets, machine translation models, and speech tools that make digital content more accessible to millions of Africans in their native languages.

To further empower innovation, Google is launching a catalytic funding initiative to support AI-driven startups tackling real-world challenges.

This platform will combine philanthropic capital, venture investment, and Google’s technical expertise to help more than 100 early-stage ventures scale AI-based solutions in agriculture, healthcare, education, and other vital sectors. Startups will also receive mentorship, access to tools, and technical guidance to support responsible development.

Accra AI Community Centre

Africa’s AI talent is growing rapidly, but the infrastructure to support it must grow in tandem. That’s why a cornerstone of this announcement is the launch of the AI Community Center in Accra — a first-of-its-kind space for AI learning, experimentation, and collaboration in Africa.

The Center will host training sessions, community events, and workshops focused on responsible AI development. Its programming will span four pillars: AI literacy, community technology, social impact, and arts and culture — providing a platform for a diverse ecosystem of developers, students, and creators to engage with AI in ways that are grounded in African priorities.

To help meet the rising demand for AI and digital skills, Google is rolling out 100,000 Google Career Certificate scholarships for students in higher learning institutions across Ghana.

These fully funded, self-paced programs will focus on AI Essentials, Prompting Essentials, and other high-growth fields like IT Support, Data Analytics, and Cybersecurity — enabling more learners to access job-ready training and build careers in AI and the digital economy.

Beyond Ghana, Google.org is committing an additional $7 million to support AI education across Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Ghana. The funding will support academic institutions and nonprofits building localized AI curricula, online safety training, and cybersecurity programs.

Additionally, two new $1 million grants from Google.org aim to bolster AI research capacity across the continent.

One grant goes to the African Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AfriDSAI) at the University of Pretoria to support applied AI research and training. The other supports the Wits Machine Intelligence and Neural Discovery (MIND) Institute in South Africa, which will fund MSc and PhD students to conduct foundational AI research and help shape Africa’s role in the global AI landscape.

Speaking about the announcements, James Manyika, Senior Vice President for Research, Labs, and Technology & Society at Google, said, “Africa is home to some of the most important and inspiring work in AI today. We are committed to supporting the next wave of innovation through long-term investment, local partnerships, and platforms that help researchers and entrepreneurs build solutions that matter.”

Yossi Matias, Vice President of Engineering and Research at Google, added, “This new wave of support reflects our belief in the talent, creativity, and ingenuity across the continent. By building with local communities and institutions, we’re supporting solutions that are rooted in Africa’s realities and built for global impact.”

These new initiatives build on Google’s ongoing work across the continent. Past efforts have included partnerships to support AI-powered maternal health dashboards in Ghana and Nigeria, wildfire alerts in East Africa, and regional language models developed by teams in Accra and Nairobi.

Bawku Tensions: ‘There are attempts to derail progress made by Otumfuo’

Godwin Edudzi Tameklo is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Petroleum Authority Godwin Edudzi Tameklo is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Petroleum Authority

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has expressed concern over what he believes are attempts by certain elements to incite unrest and derail the progress being made by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in resolving the Bawku conflicts.

During an appearance on TV3’s NewDay on Monday, July 28, 2025, Edudzi Tameklo raised concerns over recent killings in the Ashanti Region, questioning why faceless individuals would attempt such acts.

He suggested that these developments may be deliberate efforts to “export” the Bawku chieftaincy conflict to the Ashanti Region, where the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who is currently leading mediation efforts in the Bawku dispute resides.

“Look, it is obvious that some people are trying so hard to, as it were, export the conflict beyond that enclave into the Ashanti Region. It also does appear that there are some people who are not happy that there will be peace in those areas.

“Because why in God’s name would you want to go and kill in Ashanti Region knowing very well that it is where Otumfuo is and he is leading this mediation. So, it is clear that there is an attempt to derail the excellent work that Nana Asantehene is doing, and that for me, goes beyond mischief to plain criminality,” he said.

Edudzi Tameklo, who also serves as the Director of Legal Services for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining national stability.

He cautioned that any attempts to cause instability in the country would be met with firm and decisive action.

“Our law enforcement officers, and I need to point this out, nobody will be permitted under President John Dramani Mahama to attempt creating a state of insecurity. It’s a narrative that some people want to drive, but it won’t work. President John Dramani Mahama does not have any personal interest in that conflict,” he added.

AG justifies Duffuor case withdrawal, breaks down GH¢2bn recovery plan

0

The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has provided a detailed explanation of the structured repayment arrangement that led to the discontinuation of the criminal case against former Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffuor and seven others.

Speaking at a sectoral update on Monday, July 28, Dr. Ayine said the decision to enter a nolle prosequi—a formal notice to discontinue prosecution—was informed by progress in asset recovery efforts and the legal complexities surrounding the case.

According to him, after extended negotiations, the accused proposed a structured settlement of their revised obligations, which totaled GH¢3.3 billion. The proposal involved repaying GH¢2 billion as full and final settlement through a combination of asset transfers and cooperation in recovering funds from third parties.

“By a letter dated May 7, 2025, the accused persons proposed to pay GH¢2 billion through a structured arrangement,” Dr. Ayine stated.

“They agreed to transfer GH¢800 million worth of assets directly to UniBank, currently under receivership, and to assist in recovering an additional GH¢1.2 billion from third-party beneficiaries who received payments under their instructions.”

He disclosed that GH¢844 million in landed properties had already been handed over to UniBank. Of the GH¢1.2 billion expected from third-party recoveries, GH¢500 million has already been retrieved, with the remaining GH¢700 million expected within 18 months—alongside proceeds from the asset sales.

The Attorney-General’s Office considered several key factors in assessing the settlement proposal:

  1. Fictitious Entries Preceded Official Receivership: The receiver of UniBank acknowledged that fictitious accounting entries inflated the bank’s assets by about GH¢2.1 billion before it was placed under official administration.

  2. Pending Civil Claims: A GH¢300 million claim filed by the receiver in 2019 with the Official Liquidator remains under the insolvency process.

  3. Prolonged Litigation: The combined civil and criminal cases have dragged on for over six years, with limited results due to the complexity of the proceedings and difficulties in tracing assets early on.

  4. Risk of Diminishing Returns: Dr. Ayine noted that continued litigation risked yielding lower net recoveries and undermining the objectives of the financial sector reforms.

The discontinued case—The Republic v. Kwabena Duffuor & 7 Others (CR/0248/2020)—was among several initiated during Ghana’s financial sector clean-up, which aimed to recover public funds and hold responsible parties to account. The government had set a 60% recovery threshold as a condition for reassessing the need for prosecution.

“It is important to make clear that when someone is charged with causing financial loss to the state, it does not imply that they took the resources that have been lost,” Dr. Ayine emphasized.

Did Daddy Lumba predict his own death?

Two times the late Daddy Lumba (pictured) predicted his death Two times the late Daddy Lumba (pictured) predicted his death

Following the demise of Ghanaian Highlife musician Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, videos of his recent public engagements in which he seemingly appeared to sound a farewell message, have resurfaced online.

Daddy Lumba passed on in the early hours of Saturday, July 26, 2025, after battling a short illness.

He died at the age of 60.

Interesting, shortly after his passing, two separate videos from his 60th birthday celebration have resurfaced on social media showing Daddy Lumba making some rather heart-wrenching remarks, which sounded almost like he was saying his final goodbye to fans.

During the late musician’s performance at his 60th Birthday celebration, Lumba recounted the challenges he passed through while on his sickbed.

He added that he did not believe he would be alive to witness his 60th birthday.

Lumba made the statement at a concert that happened barely nine-months ago.

“I didn’t believe I would be okay despite all the suffering I went through when I was sick. I sat in a wheelchair, but God being so good, I am now 60 years old.

“If he (God) calls me tomorrow, I would gladly go. So, let us stay with love and unity. Very soon, I, Kwadwo Fosu, will pass on, so I am saying my final goodbye to you all,” he said.

In another viral video on social media, the late Lumba, who had paid a working visit to his radio station, similarly wished workers his final goodbye.

The musician used “Makra Mo” a term from one of his much-anticipated songs, to bid his final goodbye to his workers.

“You people should keep up with the good works, and I know that God will make everything beautiful for us. I welcome you all to DL FM. Maybe this would be my final visit to the station. So, this is my final goodbye message to all of you,” Lumba noted.

Nayiri Palace slams gov’t over Nalerigu curfew, demands apology

0

The Mamprusi Traditional Council has strongly condemned the government’s imposition of a curfew on Nalerigu and its surrounding areas, describing the move as arbitrary, unjustified, and a direct affront to the authority of the Nayiri.

In a statement issued on Monday, July 28, the Nayiri Palace expressed its displeasure over the curfew imposed from 2:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily, effective July 27, 2025, stating that the decision was made without prior consultation, despite Nalerigu being calm and devoid of any ongoing conflict.

“The Nayiri Palace has taken grave notice of a communique circulating in the public domain announcing the imposition of a curfew… While Mamprugu remains firmly committed to constitutional rule… the Palace expresses its deep displeasure and dismay at the arbitrary and unjustified manner in which this curfew has been imposed,” the statement read.

The curfew follows the killing of two students at Nalerigu Senior High School on Saturday, July 26, by unidentified gunmen. While authorities have yet to confirm the motive, local speculation has linked the incident to the protracted Bawku conflict.

However, the Council insists that Nalerigu should not be lumped together with areas experiencing unrest.

“It is troubling that the government continues to pursue a misguided policy of equating the longstanding conflict in the Bawku Traditional Area with the peace and stability that exists in Mamprugu, particularly in Walewale and now Nalerigu,” the statement added.

The Council dismissed the government’s justification that the curfew was meant to facilitate the evacuation of students as “unfortunate and unconvincing,” and warned that such reactive security measures do not promote long-term peace.

Demanding immediate action, the Mamprusi Traditional Council called on the government to:

1. Lift the curfew on Nalerigu and its environs without delay.
2. Conduct a full and transparent investigation into the murder of the students and bring the perpetrators to justice.
3. Issue an unqualified apology to the Nayiri and the people of Mamprugu for bypassing traditional authority.

The Palace stressed that peace in Mamprugu must be preserved through collaboration and respect, not through what it described as unilateral and poorly informed decisions made without local engagement.

Osahen Is Deputy Speaker Till 2028

The recent bizarre attempt by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Majority in Parliament to oust the Minority Leader, Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin from the ECOWAS Parliament has become an exercise in futility because per the laws governing the ECOWAS Parliament, the tenure of a Member, more so, an elected Deputy Speaker is fixed and as long as he has won his Effutu Constituency seat, no person, group or nation can remove him unless he himself voluntarily resigns, takes a position in the Executive or dies.

Musk says Tesla, Samsung sign $16.5 billion chip supply deal

0

Tesla, opens new tab CEO Elon Musk said the U.S. automaker had signed a $16.5 billion deal to source chips from Samsung Electronics, opens new tab, a move expected to bolster the South Korean tech giant’s loss-making contract manufacturing business.

Samsung’s shares jumped as much as 6.8% to their highest since September last year after news of the deal. Tesla shares were up 1.9% in U.S. premarket trading.

Musk said Samsung’s new chip factory in Taylor, Texas will make Tesla’s next-generation AI6 chip, potentially re-energizing the project that has faced long delays amid Samsung’s difficulties in retaining and attracting major clients.

“Samsung agreed to allow Tesla to assist in maximizing manufacturing efficiency. This is a critical point, as I will walk the line personally to accelerate the pace of progress. And the fab is conveniently located not far from my house,” Musk said in a post on X on Monday.

“The $16.5B number is just the bare minimum. Actual output is likely to be several times higher,” he said in another post.

According to a senior analyst at NH Investment & Securities, Ryu Young-ho, Samsung’s Taylor fab “so far had virtually no customers, so this order is quite meaningful”.

In October, Reuters reported that Samsung had postponed taking deliveries of ASML, opens new tab chipmaking equipment for its Texas factory as it had not yet won any major customers for the project. It has already delayed the plant’s operational start to 2026.

POTENTIAL PRODUCTION TIMELINE

While no timeline was provided for AI6 chip production, Musk has previously said that next-generation AI5 chips will be produced at the end of 2026, suggesting AI6 would follow.

Lee Dong-ju, an analyst at SK Securities, expects production in 2027 or 2028, but Tesla has a history of missing its targets.

Samsung currently makes Tesla’s AI4 chips, which power its Full Self-Driving driver assistant system, while TSMC is slated to make the AI5, initially in Taiwan and then Arizona, Musk has said.

Samsung, the world’s top memory chip maker, also produces logic chips designed by customers through its foundry business. The Texas project is central to Samsung Chairman Jay Y. Lee’s strategy to expand beyond its bread-and-butter memory chips into contract chip manufacturing.

It holds just 8% of the global foundry market, far behind industry leader TSMC, opens new tab, which has a 67% share, data from market researcher Trendforce show.

Samsung had earlier announced the $16.5 billion chip supply deal without naming the client, saying the customer had requested confidentiality about the details of the deal, which will run through the end of 2033.

Three sources briefed about the matter told Reuters that Tesla, opens new tab was the customer for the deal.

HELP SAMSUNG’S FOUNDRY BUSINESS

The deal with Tesla comes as Samsung, which is due to report its earnings on Thursday, faces mounting pressure in the race to produce artificial intelligence chips, where it trails rivals such as TSMC and SK Hynix, opens new tab. This lag has weighed heavily on its profit and share price.

Earlier this month, Samsung projected a 56% drop in second-quarter operating profit, partly due to widening losses of its foundry business.

Pak Yuak, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities, said the deal would help reduce losses at Samsung’s foundry business, which he estimates exceeded 5 trillion won ($3.6 billion) in the first half of the year.

Analysts say Samsung has struggled to retain key clients, with many defecting to TSMC for advanced chips, underscoring technological challenges the firm faces in the race to stay relevant in the capital intensive business.

TSMC counts Apple, opens new tab, Nvidia, opens new tab and Qualcomm, opens new tab among its customers.

It is not clear whether the Samsung-Tesla deal is related to ongoing trade talks between South Korea and the United States. Seoul is seeking U.S. partnerships in chips and shipbuilding amid last-ditch efforts to reach a trade deal to eliminate or reduce potential 25% U.S. tariffs.

A file photo of a victim of the asawase murders A file photo of a victim of the asawase murders

The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) has rolled out stringent security directives in response to recent killings in Asawase that have heightened tensions and security concerns within the region.

In a statement released on Monday, the Council imposed a ban on all motorbike operations between 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., as part of efforts to curb the movement of suspected criminals who often use motorbikes to evade security checks.

During permitted hours, motorbike riders are barred from carrying passengers or additional persons. Riders are also prohibited from wearing bulky clothing such as smocks, heavy jackets, or three-piece outfits that could conceal weapons.

Additionally, the Council stressed that all unregistered or unlicensed motorbikes are banned from the roads with immediate effect. Commuters have also been cautioned not to carry any weapons, whether licensed or unlicensed, in vehicles or on motorcycles until further notice.

To enforce these measures, there will be increased police and military presence in affected communities, including barriers and random stop-and-search checkpoints.

The ARCC urged the public to cooperate fully with security personnel as these measures are aimed at protecting lives and restoring calm following the tragic incidents in Asawase.

Residents are advised to stay informed and comply with all directives as the region works to prevent further violence and ensure community safety.

uniBank directors offer GH¢2 billion settlement to resolve GH¢3.3 billion debt – AG

Defunct uniBank Ghana office Defunct uniBank Ghana office

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has disclosed that directors of the defunct uniBank Ghana Limited have proposed a GH¢2 billion settlement to resolve a GH¢3.3 billion liability owed to the state.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on July 28, 2025, the Attorney General said the accused persons submitted the offer in a letter dated May 7, 2025, following prolonged negotiations.

The settlement proposal includes the transfer of GH¢800 million worth of assets directly to uniBank, as well as the accused persons’ active cooperation in recovering an additional GH¢1.2 billion from third parties.

“The accused persons offered to pay GH¢2 billion in full and final settlement of the outstanding obligation,” the Attorney-General stated.

“This includes GH¢800 million in assets and their cooperation to help the Receiver retrieve another GH¢1.2 billion from direct beneficiaries,” he added.

Meanwhile, the court has yet to determine whether the proposal will be accepted.

uniBank was one of several indigenous banks that collapsed in 2018 during the financial sector clean-up exercise by the Bank of Ghana.

The BoG revoked uniBank’s licence, citing insolvency and related-party transactions that allegedly violated banking regulations. The central bank subsequently appointed a receiver to take over operations and recover assets.

The collapse also triggered criminal investigations and a civil recovery process targeting the bank’s directors and shareholders, including Dr Kwabena Duffour, a former Minister of Finance.

The state accused them of misappropriating funds and engaging in unlawful transactions that contributed to the bank’s collapse.

In 2020, the Attorney General’s office filed charges against the directors for alleged financial malfeasance, including money laundering, fraudulent breach of trust, and dishonest appropriation of funds.

The total amount involved was initially estimated at over GH¢5 billion, later revised to GH¢3.3 billion following reconciliations and asset valuations.

The team’s remarkable achievement solidified their status as a dominant force in African armwrestling, showcasing skill, determination and national pride on a continental stage.

Competing against over 400 athletes from 20 countries, Ghana’s contingent of 20 athletes and four officials demonstrated their prowess across both Left and Right Hand competitions.

The Golden Arms clinched 11 gold, 11 silver and 2 bronze medals on the opening day trailing closely behind host nation Nigeria (24 gold, 19 silver, 19 bronze) and Cameroon (14 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze).

As the championship progressed, Ghana’s athletes added to their tally culminating in a total of 50 medals.

Team captain, Edward Asamoah, a standout performer, expressed confidence in the team’s preparation prior to the event.

“We’ve prepared from day one till now. It won’t be an easy journey, but with God on our side, we believe we’ll make Ghana proud,” he said during a media workout in Accra before departing for Abuja, Nigeria.

Ghana’s performance was particularly notable given the financial hurdles faced by the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF).

The Golden Arms’ ability to compete and excel under these constraints emphasised their resilience and dedication.

Technical Director, Hussein Addy, highlighted the squad’s readiness and strategic blend of veterans like world champion Grace Mintah and promising debutants.

“Our destination extends beyond Abuja – we aim to claim gold while ensuring no silver or bronze remains unclaimed,” Addy stated before the championship.

Mintah, a police officer and three-time African Championships gold medalist, continued to be a cornerstone of Ghana’s success, building on her historic World Armwrestling Championship gold in Moldova in 2024.

The 14th African Armwrestling Championship, which ran from July 23 to 27, 2025, was hailed as the largest in the sport’s history on the continent, with Nigeria leading the medal table on Day One.

The event also served as a qualifier for the 2025 World Championship in Bulgaria and the 2027 All-African Games in Egypt, adding further significance to Ghana’s medal haul.

For Ghana, the 50-medal triumph not only reaffirmed their dominance but also set a high bar for future competitions.

As the Golden Arms return home, their achievement resonates as a testament to their hard work and the growing influence of armwrestling in Ghana.

With their sights set on global stages, the team continues to inspire a nation and a continent, proving that strength and unity can overcome any challenge.

Death Is No Escape from Accountability – Ampong Demands Payment from Lumba’s Family

News Hub Creator2h

As Ghana mourns the passing of highlife legend Daddy Lumba on July 26, 2025, gospel musician Great Ampong has reignited a simmering feud that dates back nearly a decade. His latest statement—declaring intent to confront Lumba’s family during the funeral rites to retrieve unpaid earnings—has stirred a storm of reactions across music and religious circles.

The conflict traces back to the 2015 release of *Hosanna*, a gospel album launched under the duo name “Kojo Kojo.” Ampong claims he penned eight of the ten songs and was blindsided when Lumba allegedly left the album launch with over GHC 360,000, leaving Ampong empty-handed in front of fans.

He has likened the betrayal to a spiritual wound, invoking the story of Judas and Jesus to express the depth of his hurt. Despite past attempts at reconciliation—efforts led by religious leaders such as Archbishop Adonteng Boateng and Prophet Eric Boahen—no resolution was reached. Even a donation from Givers Herbal Centre aimed at healing the rift failed to bring closure.

While Ampong once publicly declared forgiveness in the name of spiritual growth, Lumba’s death appears to have reopened old wounds. Ampong now vows to seek his share directly from the family, a move some view as necessary justice and others as inappropriate timing.

His stance has sparked broader conversations about fairness and accountability in Ghana’s creative industry, where informal agreements often leave artists vulnerable. With funeral preparations underway and tributes flowing in, many wonder whether Ampong’s vow will lead to legal action or public backlash.

Whether seen as a righteous stand or a misstep during mourning, Ampong’s declaration reminds fans that behind the music lie fragile relationships, unspoken grievances, and the enduring quest for justice.

Titus Glover urges honest dialogue to end Bawku conflict

0

Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover ,Greater Accra Regional Minister

Former Deputy Transport Minister and Member of Parliament for Tema East, Titus Nii Kwartei Glover, has called for open and honest dialogue grounded in trust to help resolve the protracted conflict in Bawku and surrounding areas.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Glover stressed that a sustainable resolution requires confronting the root causes, promoting forgiveness, and encouraging unity among the feuding factions.

“For the Bawku conflict to end will depend on how we manage the root causes, engage in honest dialogue, and encourage forgiveness. Many of the tribes involved have intermarried, so this conflict should not be allowed to escalate further,” he said.

He described the situation as a serious national security threat and backed the government’s decision to deploy military personnel to restore calm in the area.

However, Mr. Glover raised concerns about the 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. curfew imposed on Nalerigu by the Ministry of the Interior, arguing that the directive disrupts the livelihoods of the mainly farming population.

He also cautioned political actors against using the crisis for partisan gain, referencing past comments by former President Mahama who allegedly blamed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for earlier clashes.

“We must be careful with our statements. National issues like this should not be politicized—we need to focus on finding a lasting solution,” he said.

His remarks follow heightened tensions in the area after two male students of Nalerigu Senior High School were shot and killed by unidentified gunmen on Saturday, July 26.

In response, the government on Sunday, July 27, began evacuating students from Bawku and Nalerigu while deploying military personnel to maintain law and order.

Gender equity Law must be implemented, not just in statute books – FIDA Ghana

0

The Executive Director of FIDA Ghana, Susan Aryeetey, has urged the government and relevant stakeholders to move beyond the passage of the Affirmative Action, Gender Equity Bill by taking concrete steps to implement it across all sectors of society.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, July 28, Ms. Aryeetey noted that although the passage of the bill is a step in the right direction, the real work lies in enforcing its provisions to correct long-standing gender imbalances.

“Going forward, we are still experiencing the imbalance you find almost everywhere. Even on boards, you will find 10 men and three women. The disparity and imbalance are not something we should rejoice in,” she said.

Her remarks come after Parliament passed the Affirmative Action, Gender Equity Bill, 2024, which seeks to tackle the deep-rooted cultural, social, economic, and political discrimination against women in Ghana. The legislation is designed to promote equal representation in both the public and private sectors.

Ms. Aryeetey emphasised that having the law on paper is not enough, adding that “Fine, we have passed the law, which means we’ve taken steps toward correcting it. Now this is where the work starts. The law is there; it shouldn’t just be in the statutory books, it should be implemented.”

The Affirmative Action Bill mandates proactive measures to ensure women are fairly represented in decision-making spaces and leadership positions, including on corporate boards, in Parliament, and within government institutions.

BoG Engages Clergy On NIBF

0

Dr. Johnson Asiama (M) with some members of the clergy

The Bank of Ghana (BoG), has engaged the clergy as part of a broader stakeholder engagement towards establishing the institutional, legal and regulatory framework to create a Non-Interest Banking and Finance (NIBF) governance system in the country.

BOG Governor, Dr. Johnson Asiama in his opening remarks said the meeting forms an important aspects of discussions for effective roll out of Non-Interest Banking and Finance governance to reflect the interest of Ghanaians.

He said, “Unlike conventional Banking systems, which largely rely on interest based lending and instruments, NIBF is built upon principles of equity, fairness and transparency and risk sharing.

“It prohibits the charging of interest, upholding the belief that money should serve as a medium of exchange rather than a commodity that generates profit in isolation”

Dr. Asiama stated that the Central bank’s interest as a regulator is to achieve financial inclusion with product diversification and choice especially, its inherent benefits to the economy.

He said NIBF also aspires to function not merely as a commercial enterprise, but as a transformative instrument for economic justice and prosperity while its challenges financial institutions to go beyond profit maximisation and act as responsible stewards of social well-being.

“As Ghana charts its path towards inclusive and sustainable transformation, the role of NIBF cannot be overstated. With its foundation in ethical principles, tangible assets backing and social justice, NIBF provides a credible alternative for financing our development aspirations,” he added.

Cybersecurity pro decodes Ghana Deputy Minister nominee’s answer – Right, Wrong, or Misunderstood?

0

The recent parliamentary exchange regarding coding has sparked significant discussion across Ghana’s tech community and beyond.

As someone who has spent over 10 years in cybersecurity and digital infrastructure development, I believe this moment presents an opportunity to examine how we communicate about technology in policy contexts, and what this reveals about our national digital transformation journey.

The Context of Technical Communication

Having observed similar discussions across various African countries implementing digital strategies, I’ve noticed a recurring pattern: the gap between technical implementation language and policy framework language. This isn’t unique to Ghana – it’s a global challenge where technical practitioners and policy architects often operate in different conceptual frameworks.

Different Lenses, Different Definitions

When the Deputy Minister Mohammed Adam Sukparu described coding as “providing training for young men and women in the IT space, training them in web design, training them in how to build software,” he was speaking from a policy implementation perspective rather than a technical definition perspective.

From a cybersecurity and IT governance standpoint, this distinction is crucial. In policy circles, “coding” often refers to the entire educational ecosystem and capacity-building framework, while in technical circles, it refers specifically to the act of writing instructions for computers.

Technical Analysis: What Was Actually Said

Let me break down the response from a systems thinking perspective:

Policy Framework Context: The Deputy Minister appeared to be addressing coding as a developmental program and educational initiative. From this lens, coding becomes:

A capacity-building strategy

A youth empowerment program

A digital skills development framework

An economic transformation tool

Technical Context: The technical community expected a definition focused on:

Programming languages and syntax

Algorithm development

Software engineering principles

Computer science fundamentals

Industry Perspective: Both Views Have Merit

In my experience, I’ve seen how these different perspectives actually complement each other:

The Policy Perspective is Strategic

When implementing national digital strategies, coding education isn’t just about teaching Python or JavaScript. It’s about:

Infrastructure development: Building human capital for the digital economy

Economic diversification: Creating new employment sectors

Youth engagement: Providing alternative career pathways

Innovation ecosystem: Establishing a foundation for tech entrepreneurship

The Technical Perspective is Operational

Technical practitioners focus on the mechanics:

Skill acquisition: Specific programming competencies

Problem-solving: Algorithmic thinking and logic

Tool mastery: Development environments and frameworks

Code quality: Best practices and standards

What This Reveals About Our Digital Maturity

This conversation actually highlights something positive about Ghana’s digital transformation journey: we have a vibrant tech community that cares deeply about precision and quality. The passionate response from the technical community demonstrates:

1. Technical Standards Matter: Our developers and engineers maintain high standards for technical accuracy

2. Engagement is High: The tech community is actively participating in national conversations

3. Expertise is Present: We have knowledgeable practitioners who can identify and articulate technical nuances

Lessons from Other Digital Transformation Leaders

Looking at countries like Estonia, Singapore, and Rwanda – all digital transformation success stories – similar communication challenges occurred during their early implementation phases. The key was developing translation mechanisms between policy and technical languages.

Estonia’s Experience

During Estonia’s e-governance implementation, ministers initially spoke about “digital infrastructure” in broad policy terms, while technicians focused on specific protocols and standards. Success came from creating bridge communication protocols.

Singapore’s Approach

Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative succeeded partly because it established technical advisory councils that helped policymakers communicate more precisely about technical matters.

Constructive Path Forward

Rather than viewing this as a deficit, we can leverage this moment for positive outcomes:

For Policy Makers

1. Technical Advisory Integration: Establish regular consultation with technical experts for public communications

2. Context Clarity: Specify whether discussing policy frameworks or technical implementation

3. Continuous Learning: Engage with technical communities to understand current language and concepts

For Technical Community

1. Constructive Engagement: Provide educational support rather than just criticism

2. Bridge Building: Help translate between technical precision and policy communication

3. Collaborative Support: Offer expertise to enhance government digital initiatives

For Ghana’s Digital Future

1. Unified Vision: Align policy objectives with technical implementation strategies

2. Communication Protocols: Develop standards for discussing technical matters in public forums

3. Educational Investment: Strengthen technical literacy at all levels of governance

The Bigger Picture: Ghana’s Digital Potential

From a cybersecurity perspective, Ghana is positioned well for digital leadership in Africa:

Infrastructure: Improving connectivity and data centre capabilities

Human Capital: Growing pool of technical talent

Innovation: Emerging startup ecosystem and tech hubs

Policy Support: Government commitment to digital transformation

The coding conversation, rather than being a setback, can catalyse better alignment between policy vision and technical execution.

Recommendations for Moving Forward

Immediate Actions

1. Technical Advisory Council: Establish a formal technical advisory board for digital policy matters

2. Communication Training: Provide technical communication workshops for policy makers

3. Community Engagement: Create regular dialogue forums between the government and the tech community

Medium-term Strategies

1. Digital Literacy Programs: Comprehensive programs for all government levels

2. Industry Partnerships: Formal collaboration between the government and the tech industry

3. International Benchmarking: Study communication best practices from digital leaders

Long-term Vision

1. Integrated Approach: Seamless integration of policy and technical perspectives

2. Innovation Culture: Foster an environment where technical precision and policy vision align

3. Regional Leadership: Position Ghana as West Africa’s digital communication model

Conclusion

The recent coding discussion reflects a healthy, engaged democracy where technical communities actively participate in governance conversations. Rather than seeing this as a problem, we should recognize it as evidence of Ghana’s maturing digital ecosystem.

The Deputy Minister’s response, when viewed through a policy implementation lens, addresses the systemic and educational aspects of coding initiatives. The technical community’s reaction demonstrates our collective commitment to precision and quality.

Our path forward lies not in choosing between these perspectives, but in creating mechanisms that honour both the strategic policy vision and the technical precision that will make that vision successful.

As Ghana continues its digital transformation journey, moments like these – where different communities engage in substantive discussion about our technological future – are actually signs of progress. They indicate a society where technology matters enough to generate passionate, informed debate.

The question isn’t whether the Deputy Minister’s explanation was technically precise – it’s how we use this moment to strengthen the bridge between policy vision and technical implementation, ensuring Ghana’s digital transformation benefits from both strategic thinking and technical excellence.

Cedi gains not backed by strong reforms – Tweneboah Fokuo opines

Tweneboah Fokuo is the Member of Parliament for Manso Nkwanta Tweneboah Fokuo is the Member of Parliament for Manso Nkwanta

‎The Member of Parliament for Manso Nkwanta, Tweneboah Fokuo, says the recent rise in the value of the Ghana cedi is not due to strong economic foundations.

‎Speaking on Citi FM’s The Big Issue on July 26, 2025, he argued that the current government should not take credit for any major increase in Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves.

‎He explained that most of the gold reserves supporting the cedi were built by the previous NPP government, and the current administration has only added a little, about one metric tonne.

‎“Yes, we talk about gold reserves, but if you check, most of it came from the previous government. This one has only added about one metric tonne, so they can’t claim to have made any big structural change that led to the cedi’s appreciation,” he said.

‎He believes the cedi’s recent gains are mostly due to short-term factors like temporary support from the Bank of Ghana and the weakening of other global currencies, not long-term economic improvements.

‎He stated that unless the government puts in place strong, lasting reforms, the cedi could easily lose its current value again.

Some of the items seized and burnt in the operation in Bole

The Savannah Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has seized eight excavators and destroyed hundreds of makeshift structures belonging to illegal miners as part of an operation to combat galamsey activities.

The Savannah Regional Minister, Salisu Be-Awuribe, led the team that targeted areas such as Tuntumba, Kalaba, and Gbiniyiri in the Bole district.

However, upon noticing the presence of security personnel, the illegal miners fled the scene, leaving behind their belongings and equipment.

In an interview with journalists, Mr. Be-Awuribe, indicated that REGSEC is committed to stopping illegal mining from the region.

He stated that their focus is on the financiers behind these operations, warning that anyone involved in illegal activities will face arrest and prosecution.

“Our target is the financiers of these operations, transporting such heavy equipment to this area is costly, and the ordinary miner cannot bear this expense. This indicates that there are influential individuals behind the scenes. Our goal is to identify not only the operators but also those bigwigs financing this illegal activity, and we assure you that they will be held accountable,” he noted.

The Savannah Regional Minister, expressed concern over the contamination of water bodies in the region and called for the need for urgent action to protect the water bodies.

“The water bodies are our main source of water, when their flow is contaminated it affects livelihoods and many people. The heavy metals used in these operations pose serious health risks. We will do everything possible to safeguard our water resources,” he assured.

My wife left me after I returned huge sum of dollars I found in my car

0

File photo of a worried man File photo of a worried man

Dear GhanaWeb,

I’m a 32-year-old man who is married to a 27-year-old woman. I’ve been married for 3 years with a son. I used to be a trotro driver before I met my wife. A year after we got married, she spoke to one of our mutual friends to help me get a new car.

I don’t earn enough from the trotro, so my wife suggested I subscribe to a taxi or bolt business. I eventually got a car that I used as taxi. Everything was going on fine.

Two weeks after I started working, I picked a random man and his girlfriend. During the trip, the girlfriend was so rude to me but the man was nice. I dropped them off and the man paid me and on top of it, added a tip.

I closed for the day and I decided to clean the car before entering the house. That’s when I saw a brown envelope at the back seat; I opened it and to my surprise, it was full of dollars. I panicked and rushed home.

I showed the money to my wife and she was so happy. She attributed it to God giving us a breakthrough. I told my wife how rude the lady was to me and she called my finding the dollars in my car as karma dealing with the rude girlfriend.

It’s a whole lot of money which could change our lives. The morning after bringing the money home, my wife said we should go to the forex bureau to change it into cedis. I stepped out to think about it thoroughly but I didn’t change the money. Rather, I withdrew money from my personal account and took my wife out for shopping and later to a restaurant.

She commented that it’s been years since she ate a good meal like the one on the day we went out. I’ve never seen my wife so happy in a while like she was.

In as much as we were both happy about the money, I didn’t have a good feeling about keeping it.

I had sleepless nights. I was thinking whether to return the money or keep it for a better life. The next morning, I decided to return it to relieve my conscience. I didn’t tell my wife anything while leaving home to return the money.

When I got to the man’s house, I met the rude lady rather. I told her I had come to return the money I found in my car.

Shockingly, she slapped me and called me a thief. I asked if that’s my reward for returning the money and she replied who am I to expect an appreciation from her?

I went home and my wife asked if I went to change the money. She said she went to buy some foodstuffs on credit and was waiting for me to bring the money to pay. I told her I had returned the money and she looked so disappointed. I apologised to her but she was so angry.

She started packing her things and when I asked her why, she said she could see I enjoy being poor or maybe because she’s with me regardless, I’m not putting in effort to take us out of poverty, stressing she is tired.

I begged her but she never listened to me. She’s left me together with my son. I’ve pleaded and done everything to let her return home but all to no avail.

I know I failed her but what can I do for her to forgive me. I’m so empty without her; she brings light into my life. I don’t want to lose my family. I need help!

Deputy Comm. Minister must do his homework over ‘shocking’ coding answer – Vickie Bright

0

Private legal practitioner Vickie Bright has urged Deputy Communication Minister-designate Mohammed Adams Sukparu to improve his understanding of “coding” after an unclear response during vetting, casting doubt on his readiness to support the ministry’s digital transformation.

Ms Bright made the call after Mr Sukparu’s vetting, emphasising the critical need for competence in such an essential sector.

During the parliamentary vetting of Mohammed Adams Sukparu for the role of Deputy Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, a seemingly simple question sparked visible surprise among members of the Appointments Committee.

Committee member and New Patriotic Party MP, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, asked Mr Sukparu to define “coding”, a question that drew notable reactions from Shaib and his colleagues.

This moment sought to evaluate the Sissala West legislator’s grasp of core digital concepts in the context of flagship government initiatives like the One Million Coders Programme.

The programme is central to the ministry’s agenda of digital transformation, aiming to equip one million Ghanaian youth with coding and digital skills and positioning coding as a driver of governance effectiveness and economic growth.

“Coding is providing training for young men and women in the IT space,” Sukparu answered confidently.

“Training them in web design, training them in how to build software, and what have you. Basically, this is what coding is, Mr Chairman.”

The visible surprise on committee members’ faces and Shaib’s gentle correction—”You should understand coding some more, but I wish you well”—captured a moment that transcends one individual’s knowledge gap.

Speaking on JoyNews AM Show on Monday, July 28, Ms Bright expressed her profound disappointment with Mr Sukparu’s response.

“I am truly shocked. This is someone about to become a Deputy Minister of State — a pivotal role in a sector crucial to our national development, particularly as we look toward the future,” she stated.

She further emphasised the significance of the ministry’s evolving mandate: “The NDC manifesto is very clear on the direction for this sector, to the extent that the ministry has even been renamed. This Ministry is set to lead innovation and development in areas like artificial intelligence and digital skills, including training one million Ghanaians in coding.”

Ms Bright described the failure to define coding as “very basic” and insisted, “The Deputy Minister-designate needs to go and do his homework. I am worried because he will be supporting Sam George, who is very competent and has done well so far. I don’t know whether the minister is going to operate with one hand behind his back.

She stressed the importance of having qualified individuals in such critical roles: “Competence is important; we simply cannot afford to have unqualified people in positions that directly affect national development. Nation-building is vital, and the Deputy Minister must fully engage with the Ministry’s programmes.”

Cedi stability has saved Ghana GHS150bn in public debt – Elikem Kotoko

0

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, Elikem Kotoko, says Ghana has already saved an estimated GHS150 billion in public debt as a result of the recent stability of the cedi, crediting coordinated efforts by key financial stakeholders.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, July 28, Mr. Kotoko described the cedi’s performance against the dollar as a major economic turning point, pointing to the significant relief it has brought to the country’s debt stock.

“There is very significant evidence that we are heading in the right direction, with inflation dropping. By the mere fact that the efforts of the Bank of Ghana Governor, the Finance Minister, and other key stakeholders and the formation of the Gold for Oil and Gold for Reserves programmes have helped hold the dollar stable for this period, that alone has saved us GHS150 billion in our public debt,” he said.

The local currency, which currently trades at approximately GHS10.43 to the US dollar, has shown signs of relative stability in recent months after facing severe depreciation pressures in 2022 and 2023. Mr. Kotoko noted that if the cedi’s performance continues to improve and inflation drops to a single-digit rate, Ghana could see even greater debt relief.

“If we manage to drop to a single digit, I am convinced that we would be heading to over GHS250 billion written off, not under us paying, but by the strength and potency of our currency,” he added.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has expressed confidence that Ghana’s inflation rate will drop into the single digits by the end of 2025, well ahead of the government’s initial forecast.
