NACOC hands over $1.7m worth of seized gold to GoldBod

0

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has handed over 17 gold bars, valued at $1.7 million, to the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) at a brief ceremony held at the Ministry of the Interior in Accra.

The gold bars were confiscated by officers from the Upper East Regional Command of NACOC at the Paga border post.

They were intercepted from two Burkinabè nationals who were attempting to smuggle the precious metal out of the country.

The individuals involved have since been charged with offences relating to the transportation and unauthorised dealing in gold.

Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, reaffirmed the Ministry’s unwavering support for GoldBod, commending its role in ensuring responsible and regulated management of Ghana’s gold resources.

The Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi, expressed profound gratitude to the Director-General of NACOC for the successful recovery and transfer of the gold.

He also underscored the importance of enhanced collaboration among security agencies to effectively combat illegal gold trade.

The handover was witnessed by the Chief Director of the Ministry, Doreen Annan; Director-General of NACOC, Brigadier General Maxwell Obuba Mantey; and other senior officials from NACOC and GoldBod.

The Head Pastor of Conquerors Chapel International, Kumasi branch, Prophet Emmanuel Worlasi, has shared a prophecy about who will lead the National Democratic Congress as flagbearer in the 2028 elections.

Prophet Worlasi, who recently gained prominence following his accurate prophecy on the 2024 general elections, has foretold that Johnson Asiedu Nketiah will be the NDC’s flagbearer.

According to him, although the current Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, will likely desire to lead the party after President Mahama’s tenure expires, the party’s current national chairman, Asiedu Nketiah, will emerge victorious.

Prophet Worlasi revealed these prophecies in an interview with Etsey Atisu on GhanaWeb TV’s program, The Lowdown, on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.

He stressed that the NDC will face a tumultuous period ahead of the presidential primaries, marked by intense internal wranglings.

Prophet Worlasi indicated that the NDC’s internal conflicts will be more severe than anything the NPP will experience during their presidential primaries.

He further disclosed that about seven people will contest for the NDC’s flagbearership, but Chairman Asiedu Nketiah will ultimately win, despite a strong challenge from Julius Debrah.

The Bank of Ghana has warned banks, dedicated electronic money issuers (DEMIs), enhanced payment service providers (EPSPs), and money transfer operators (MTOs) over continued violations of the country’s foreign exchange laws and remittance guidelines.

In a public notice dated July 29, 2025, the central bank said it had observed persistent non-compliance with the Foreign Exchange Act, 2006 (Act 723), and the Updated Guidelines for Inward Remittance Services, despite several cautions and reminders.

The Bank outlined several infractions, including the termination of inward remittances through unapproved channels, unauthorised foreign exchange swaps related to remittance business, processing of remittances for institutions without prior approval, and the application of unprescribed foreign exchange rates.

“The Bank will sanction any violating institution and terminate the remittance partnerships of all MTOs whose operations are not in compliance with the approved guidelines,” the statement warned.

To ensure adherence, the central bank reminded stakeholders that local settlement accounts must be funded strictly according to Section 7.1 (c) of the guidelines, and all disbursements must be made from these accounts, as stated in Section 7.2 (a). Additionally, DEMIs and EPSPs must ensure pre-funding arrangements with settlement banks align with Section 7.2 (b).

In line with its regulatory mandate to maintain transparency and accountability in the remittance and foreign exchange ecosystem, the Bank of Ghana has directed all banks, DEMIs and EPSPs to submit weekly reports for each MTO. These must include a daily log of individual inward remittance transactions and the corresponding foreign exchange credited into their Nostro accounts.

“Failure to submit accurate and timely reports constitutes a regulatory breach under Section 42 of the Payment Systems and Services Act (Act 987) and Section 93(3)(d) of Act 930 and will attract the appropriate administrative sanctions,” the notice signed by the Secretary of the Bank of Ghana, Sandra Thompson, stated.

The central bank’s action signals a renewed crackdown on remittance malpractice in a bid to stabilise the foreign exchange regime and improve monitoring of inflows amid Ghana’s ongoing economic recovery efforts.

‘We must remember Daddy Lumba beyond monuments’ – Kafui Dey

0

Popular Ghanaian broadcast journalist Kafui Dey has called for the institutionalisation of a policy to honour the legacy of late music legend Daddy Lumba.

According to Kafui Dey, a policy that would be celebrated annually in memory of Daddy Lumba would be the surest way to keep his memory alive forever, to demonstrate his legendary status.

Speaking to GhanaWeb reporter Isaac Dadze, Kafui Dey emphasised that honouring Daddy Lumba’s legacy should go beyond erecting monuments.

He cited the example of Fela Kuti’s annual celebration in Nigeria known as Felabration, which has been ongoing for twenty years after his death.

He said, “Fela died about twenty years ago, and every year they have a celebration called Felabration. Every year, they have a musical event, and that’s how we celebrate people like this.

“We have to celebrate him beyond the monuments…you don’t just build something and put it there. Let’s do something which is musical which can be maintained.”

He believed an annual musical celebration would be a fitting tribute to Daddy Lumba’s legacy as a true highlife music legend, whose incredible works, he said, will live on.

Daddy Lumba passed away on July 26, 2025, after a short illness.

Since the announcement of his death, there has been an outpouring of grief from fans, musicians, and institutions across the country.

In a public statement released by the Fosu family on July 27, 2025, they expressed their appreciation for the love, prayers, and support they have received so far.

The family shared details of some of the initial arrangements made to honour the music legend.

One of them is the Book of Condolence, which has been opened to give friends, fans, colleagues, and the general public a chance to pay their final respects and share their memories of the late singer.

‘This is palpably false’ – Godfred Dame descends on Dominic Ayine for peddling ‘untruths’

0

Godfred Yeboah Dame and Dr Dominic Ayine Godfred Yeboah Dame and Dr Dominic Ayine

Former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has accused the current Attorney-General, Dr Dominic Ayine, of spreading what he called blatant falsehoods and engaging in deliberate attempts to undermine the Office of the Attorney-General.

In a statement issued on July 29, 2025, Dame dismissed as “palpably false” Dr Ayine’s assertion during a press conference on July 28 that it took the Attorney-General’s office six months to file witness statements in the high-profile trial of Republic v Ato Forson & 2 Others.

Dame clarified that the accused were first arraigned on January 18, 2022, and the court directed the prosecution to file disclosures by February 15, 2022.

According to him, the Office of the Attorney-General filed all necessary documents, including witness statements and exhibits, by February 14, 2022, within 27 days of arraignment.

“The Office of the Attorney-General never, on a single occasion in the Ato Forson trial, requested further time to file a witness statement, or indeed, any document at all,” Dame said.

Dame further accused Dr Ayine of attempting to whitewash his legal representation of former clients now caught in the dragnet of financial crime prosecutions.

He said Ayine’s use of nolle prosequi, a power to discontinue prosecution, amounted to a veiled effort to shield former clients from justice.

“Dr Ayine ought to have disclosed that he was exercising nolle prosequi in favour of his former clients,” Dame stated.

Refuting claims by Dr Ayine of recovering assets in the Unibank case, Dame asserted that all assets linked to the Duffuors and related companies had already been identified by the Receiver appointed by the Bank of Ghana.

“To date, Dr Ayine has not recovered a single Cedi in the Unibank matter.” He demanded evidence of any new asset discovery or monetary recovery.

He also questioned the legal basis for Ayine’s proposed use of already identified assets to defray debts.

Dame also revisited the Republic v. Ato Essien case, highlighting that the former Capital Bank CEO was convicted under a lawful process after a failed payment plan.

In sharp contrast, Dame criticised Ayine’s decision to strike deals with accused persons in other financial cases, calling for consistency in the administration of justice.

The Central North Regional Police Command has intercepted 90 bags of cocoa beans allegedly being smuggled, on the Assin Dompim-Adukrom Road in the Assin Fosu Municipality of the Central Region.

Briefing the media, DCOP Abraham Acquaye said the Police acted on intelligence and ambushed the vehicle on the Assin Dompim-Adukrom road in the early hours of Sunday, around 01:00 hours.

He said the police spotted a Hyundai Mighty Gold Truck with registration number GE-9775-24 and the signalled the driver to stop but he failed and sped off.

The Police then gave the vehicle a hot chase, but the driver abandoned the vehicle and its content and absconded.

DCOP Acquaye said the cocoa beans were found concealed in fertiliser sacks beneath bags of charcoal, upon a search.

The vehicle has been impounded and the Anti-Cocoa Smuggling Taskforce of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) notified for further action.

Efforts are underway to track the driver and apprehend the suspects behind the smuggled cocoa beans, DCOP Acquaye said.

He commended the team for their bravery, swift response and professionalism with which the suspected smuggled cocoa beans were successfully intercepted.

PwC flags Ghana’s strong H1 economic gains amid global headwinds

0

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has acknowledged Ghana’s notable economic progress in the first half of 2025 saying, it shows resilience of the country’s economy despite ongoing global trade tensions and geopolitical instability.

This follows the presentation of the government’s Mid-Year Budget Review and delivered by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson.

PWC in its 2025 mid-year budget digest observed that current economic data reflects a credible recovery, with tangible impact of the macroeconomic recovery beginning to reach businesses and households.

“Our overall view is so far, so good. Sustained improvement, however, depends on discipline, vision and a true commitment to principles of public accountability. We concur with the Minister that the data reveals a significant short-term recovery.”

“The fiscal and monetary discipline exhibited in the first six months of 2025 particularly the primary surplus achievement, debt reduction and currency stabilisation is commendable. There is a general view that businesses and households are already feeling relief from lower inflation. Indeed, some retail stores announced price reductions in the wake of lower inflation, but many traders in the informal markets remain adamant about dropping prices”, the PWC report added.

PwC noted that these gains were achieved in the face of significant external pressures, including retaliatory global trade policies linked to shifts in U.S. foreign relations and continued geopolitical risks in the Middle East.

The assessment reinforces market optimism that Ghana is gradually turning the corner, though analysts caution that sustaining the gains will require continued structural reforms, prudent fiscal management and resilience planning against external shocks.

Mid-year budget highlight

Per the mid-year budget review, Ghana’s economy expanded by 5.3% in the first quarter, with non-oil GDP growth reaching 6.8%.

The agricultural sector grew by 6.6% year-on-year, reflecting sustained productivity gains and improved food supply chains. Inflation fell significantly from 23.8% in December 2024 to 13.7% by mid-2025 marking one of the steepest declines in recent years.

Interest rates on Treasury bills dropped by 13 to 14 percentage points, while average commercial lending rates eased to 27%, reducing credit conditions.

The Ghana cedi also appreciated against major foreign currencies, buoyed by stronger external sector performance and improving investor confidence.

Government data show that savings of GH¢4.9 billion were made on domestic debt interest payments, attributed to enhanced debt management strategies.

Gross international reserves climbed to US$11.12 billion, providing 4.8 months of import cover up from 3.2 months a year earlier.

Finance Minister, Ato Forson attributed the positive performance to a combination of fiscal consolidation, tight monetary policy, a stable exchange rate environment, and reforms under the IMF-supported programme.

The government expects macroeconomic stability to hold through the second half of the year, projecting improved revenue performance and continued disinflation.

“How ironic!” – Bobie Ansah blasts NPP over galamsey blame game

Renowned political analyst and host of The Citizen Show on Accra100.5FM, Nana Kwabena Bobie Ansah, has sharply criticised the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) over what he describes as a hypocritical attempt to shift blame for Ghana’s illegal mining crisis—commonly known as galamsey—to the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Obogu grieves as community mourns 17 people killed in Juaso crash

0

The community of Obogu in the Asante-Akim South Municipality is reeling from grief following a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of 17 young members of the town.

The devastating incident occurred on the outskirts of Juaso on Monday, cutting short the lives of the victims, who were returning from a church programme. The magnitude of the loss has plunged the entire town into mourning.

When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited Obogu on Tuesday, the pain was palpable. Gyidim, a suburb predominantly occupied by members of the Saviour Church, had fallen eerily silent. Streets once filled with laughter and daily activity were now deserted, overtaken by the sounds of weeping and sorrow.

Clusters of mourners clad in red and black, the colours of mourning, gathered at the community’s entrance. The heartbreak was written on their faces. Women sat on the ground in anguish, some with bowed heads, others wandering through the community, lost in despair. Men stood motionless, visibly shaken, wiping away tears as they struggled to process the shock.

In front of the homes of the deceased, mourning canopies had been erected as families and sympathisers gathered in solemn unity to console one another.

The tragedy has left a deep scar on a town known for its communal faith and strong spiritual ties. Now, that faith is being tested like never before, as residents cling to it for strength and comfort.

Although the grief will not pass quickly, the community remains united in remembrance. The 17 young lives lost will continue to live in the prayers, stories, and hearts of those who knew and loved them.

Minority calls for balanced fiscal policies

0

Dr Gideon Boako (middle)

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus on Tuesday disputed Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Finance Minister’s claims about the economy’s performance.

At a press conference in Parliament House, Accra, Dr. Gideon Boako, the NPP Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North, argued that the previous government laid a solid foundation for the current government’s success.

He disputed the Minister’s claim about the debt-to-GDP ratio reduction, pointing out that the previous government’s debt restructuring program and debt relief initiatives contributed significantly to the reduction.

“The debt-to-GDP ratio can decrease due to GDP expansion, debt restructuring, or a combination of both,” he said.

According to Dr. Boako, the rising prices of essential goods had led to a decline in the purchasing power of the Ghanaian cedi.

He said: “The prices of goods like cement, deodorant, bread, and bottled water have increased significantly since January 2025.

“The inflation rate has been declining, reaching 13.7 per cent in June 2025, but still affects the purchasing power of the cedi.”

The Tano North legislator told the Parliamentary Press Corps that the government’s fiscal consolidation efforts had been focused on revenue generation through taxes, with several new taxes and increases in existing ones.

“These tax measures have contributed to increased costs of living, with electricity inflation rising by over 130 per cent year-on-year,” he said.

He further argued that the government’s approach should prioritize spending cuts and debt management rather than relying heavily on tax increases.

He noted that the recent 30-40 per cent increase in fees and charges for public services was likely to have far-reaching implications for citizens and businesses.

He added: “Some potential alternatives to achieve the same revenue generation goals without placing excessive burden on the populace could be expenditure rationalization, debt management, and institutional reforms.”

Dr. Boako called for a balanced approach to fiscal consolidation that he considered both revenue generation and expenditure management crucial for achieving sustainable economic growth and reducing poverty in Ghana.

He urged the government to engage in a thorough analysis of the potential impacts of its policies and consider alternative solutions that balance revenue generation with the need to protect vulnerable populations and promote economic growth.

Ivory Coast president, 83, says he will run for fourth term

0

Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara

Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara has announced he will run for a fourth term in October’s election.

In a statement, the 83-year-old said his health was not an issue and his candidacy was driven by a need to “preserve national stability amid ongoing security and economic challenges”.

Ouattara argues a new constitution approved in 2016 reset his two-term limit, meaning he is allowed to stand.

He will be the poll’s frontrunner, as several potential challengers have already been barred from the race.

The excluded candidates include former President Laurent Gbagbo, ex-Prime Minister Guillaume Soro, and former minister Tidjane Thiam.

On Tuesday, Thiam and other opposition leaders swiftly denounced Ouattara’s decision to run.

“Today’s announcement by Mr Ouattara constitutes a violation of our Constitution and a new attack on democracy,” Thiam said in a statement.

“The Ivorian people will continue to make their voices heard and show the world what we think of this situation.”

On the same day Ouattara announced his bid, authorities banned a peaceful protest planned for 7 August.

The demonstration was organised by opposition groups in order to demand the reinstatement of disqualified presidential candidates and an independent audit of the voter list.

Former banker Ouattara will be hoping his track record propels him to victory in October – for four successive years Ivory Coast’s economy has grown by more than 6%.

However, the country is currently experiencing widespread disillusionment with the country’s political establishment.

Current tension over the exclusion of opposition candidates evokes memories of past electoral violence, including the 2010-2011 conflict that left over 3,000 dead and the unrest triggered by Ouattara’s controversial third-term bid in 2020.

More than 8.7 million Ivorians have registered to vote. Civil society groups and religious leaders, including the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, have expressed alarm at growing political polarisation in the country.

I need my money back- Great Ampong fires a shot at Daddy Lumba and exposes him

News Hub Creator1d

The Great Ampong is a colleague musician of the late Charles Kwadwo Fosu, alias Daddy Lumba. Following Lumba’s death, The Great Ampong has boldly come forward to fire a shot at Daddy Lumba despite his passing on.

In his recent video circulating on social media, the Great Ampong reveals he had a song with Daddy Lumba from which they generated a significant amount of money, which was to be shared among them.

However, he claims Daddy Lumba took all of the money into his car, leaving him behind at the premium premises. He further exposed that a week came to pass, but he didn’t hear anything from him; when he called, he didn’t pick up his phone calls, and so he reported to Pastor Badu Cobby, who settled the matter, but yet still Lumba refused to give him a penny of the money.

He said, “Whether he is alive or dead, I need my money back.” https://youtu.be/CbjT-Zahu5M?si=pZ0K-Kh8jigcGrji

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, rebuked a section of Members of Parliament (MPs) during proceedings on Monday, July 28, 2025, for singing in the House.

The MPs were paying tribute to the late Ghanaian music legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, in the chamber, expressing sorrow over his passing.

Many legislators took turns eulogising the music icon for his immense contribution to Ghana’s music industry and his impact on the international stage.

Among those who paid tribute were Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, MP for Ada, Dominic Nitiwul, MP for Bimbilla, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, MP for Asante-Akyem North, Adelaide Yaa Agyeiwaa Ntim, MP for Nsuta-Kwamang-Beposo, Akwasi Konadu, MP for Manhyia North, Theresa Lardi Awuni, MP for Okaikwei North, among others.

During his submission, Dominic Nitiwul called for a state burial for the fallen legend, stating that Daddy Lumba deserved a befitting funeral.

Before concluding his statement, Nitiwul noted that a friend had requested him to sing one of Daddy Lumba’s popular songs, Ankwanoma, in his honour.

He then began singing the song, with several MPs joining him in chorus.

However, the First Deputy Speaker, visibly displeased with the moment, interrupted with a stern expression and asked, “Honourable Member, what is this?”

Nitiwul immediately apologised, saying, “Mr Speaker, we are doing this out of the ordinary for an extraordinary human being.

“Mr Speaker, forgive us, but we are mourning the best of the best. Forgive us, for we shall never forget the name Charles Kwadwo Fosu, a.k.a. Daddy Lumba.”

British National Archives presents authentic copy of ‘Bond of 1844’ to Parliament

0

The British National Archives has presented an authentic copy of the historic Bond of 1844 to the Parliament of Ghana, marking a significant contribution to the preservation of the country’s colonial and constitutional history.

The document, widely regarded as a cornerstone in Ghana’s legal and political development, was formally handed over in Accra by Juliette Desplat, Head of International Affairs at the British National Archives, and Keith McMahon, Chargé d’Affaires at the British High Commission.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin received the document on behalf of the institution.

Mr. Bagbin expressed appreciation to the British government for the gesture, describing it as a historic moment for Parliament and the people of Ghana. He noted that the Bond of 1844 captures a pivotal period in Ghana’s historical and developmental trajectory.

He also indicated that Parliament, as part of its efforts to preserve national heritage, had established a museum within Parliament House. The copy of the Bond, he said, will be displayed there to support public education and historical reference.

The Bond of 1844 was a treaty signed between the British colonial administration and several Fante chiefs, which allowed British jurisdiction over their territories and protected trade routes.

It later paved the way for the establishment of formal British colonial rule in the southern part of the then Gold Coast.

Bishop JY Adu is one of the great prophets and spiritualists in Ghana. Following the death of legendary musician Charles Kwadwo Fosu, alias Daddy Lumba, the bishop has come forward, exposing what actually killed Lumba.

According to JY Adu in an interview, he asserted that he healed Lumba on his first sickness, as he explained that he visited him in his house while he was sick and prayed for him to be healed.

He further reveals that he told Lumba to see him in Kumasi to take medical advice from him, but Lumba refused to appear for the medication and direction.

He again revealed that the last time he saw Lumba was on television praising another prophet for healing him, and with time her sister came from abroad and disclosed to him that her brother had been admitted to the hospital.

Bishop JY Adu went on to drop more secrets as he boldly exposed that Lumba’s sickness was as a result of diabetes, which later destroyed his kidneys and then led to his death.

Adu-Boahene Seeks Refund of GHS406,000 in Customs Duty Over BMW 740D Vehicle

0

Kwabena Adu Boahene
Kwabena Adu Boahene

Legal representatives for businessman Kwabena Adu-Boahene are demanding a refund of over GHS406,000 in Customs duties and taxes paid on a BMW 740D vehicle after the car was flagged as stolen by international crime agency, Interpol.

According to a formal letter issued by law firm Zoe, Akyea and Co., the vehicle, with chassis number WBA21EJ020CM11428, was sold to Mr. Adu-Boahene in 2024 by one Philip Kwame Brobbey of Philbro Group Ltd. The seller allegedly told the buyer that the vehicle was already in use in Ghana under the Free Zones scheme and had not yet cleared Customs.

Mr. Brobbey is said to have requested that Adu-Boahene settle the requisite import duties and taxes to enable formal transfer and registration of the vehicle. Acting in good faith, the vehicle was presented to the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) at Kotoka International Airport’s Preventive Unit for examination and valuation on December 10, 2024.

The Customs Division assessed the duties and taxes due at GHS406,366.08, which Mr. Adu-Boahene paid through the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS) on December 17, 2024.

However, before the car could be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) informed Mr. Adu-Boahene that the vehicle was listed on Interpol’s stolen vehicle database, prompting a potential seizure.

Mr. Adu-Boahene’s legal team maintains that he was unaware of any illegality regarding the vehicle, which had reportedly been in use in Accra by the seller, Mr. Brobbey, prior to the transaction. They insist that Customs should not have accepted the duty payment on a vehicle flagged by international authorities.

“It is our client’s firm position that he purchased the vehicle in good faith, with no knowledge of any criminal links,” the letter stated, adding that, “your outfit will never accept the payment of Customs duty… of a vehicle which has been stolen from abroad and is on the Interpol Wanted List.”

The lawyers are now demanding a full refund of the GHS406,366.08 to allow Interpol to take further steps regarding the vehicle.

Customs and EOCO officials have yet to publicly comment on the matter, but the case raises broader concerns about due diligence and inter-agency coordination in preventing the entry and sale of stolen vehicles in Ghana’s auto market.

Making a statement on the floor of the House, Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Akwasi Konadu, described the late musician as “one of Ghana’s greatest musical legends, a true maestro and an icon whose influence transcended generations and national borders.”

Mr. Konadu praised Daddy Lumba’s enduring contribution to the music industry, calling him a torchbearer whose career was marked by timeless melodies, rich lyrical depth, and powerful social commentary.

Videos have emerged showing how thugs, alleged to be associated with the NDC, invaded three different offices of the Forest Commission in the Ashanti Region.

The videos, which have gone viral on social media, captured some well-built individuals holding pump-action guns and moving around each of the premises they visited. In contrast, others moved in and locked up the offices.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional security coordinator has denied the involvement of national security in the operations that saw the alleged thugs invade the offices.

The Forestry Commission has issued a statement condemning the attack by the thugs on its offices, describing it as a “blatant act of intimidation” against its staff.

On Monday, July 28, 2025, individuals claiming to be national security operatives allegedly stormed three district offices of the Forestry Commission in the Ashanti Region, locking them up.

The suspected thugs drove away officers on duty at the Bekwai, Offinso South, and Nkawie District offices before locking the offices with their own padlocks and taking the keys.

According to him revenue mobilization is at the heart of the division and his outfit will do everything within its purview to safeguard it.

General Annan cautioned the officers not to compromise on standards and must ensure discipline and professionalism at all times.

“There are standards that must always be met. But let me also be very clear that I will not tolerate any acts of indiscipline, corruption, or abuse of office. Officers will compromise systems for personal gain.

When Otumfuo visits Mahama privately — three possible reasons revealed.

News Hub Creator14h

On June 23, 2025, the Asante monarch, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, visited President John Dramani Mahama at his private residence in what many have described as a significant moment. While the details of their conversation were not made public, the meeting has sparked much speculation, given the status and influence of both individuals. Although no official statement has followed the visit, several potential explanations have been suggested.

One likely reason is the promotion of national peace and political cohesion. Ghana is experiencing a transition in governance alongside economic and social challenges. Otumfuo’s visit could represent a symbolic act of unity and his support for ongoing dialogue and stability. Known for his non-political stance, the Asantehene often serves as a unifier in national matters.

Another possibility is that the visit was based on personal rapport. Otumfuo and President Mahama enjoy a respectful and enduring relationship. Their meeting could have been an informal one, providing a quiet moment to offer encouragement or discuss pressing issues away from the formalities of public office.

A third explanation could involve discussions on development and traditional governance. Otumfuo has been actively involved in projects related to education, cultural heritage, land policy, and rural development. His conversation with the President may have included collaboration between traditional leadership and the central government to drive these efforts forward.

Though the meeting remains private, it highlights the continued relevance of traditional authorities in shaping national progress and governance.

Cedi rallies strongly, up 40.7% against US Dollar in seven months

0

The Ghana cedi recorded a strong performance against major foreign currencies in the first seven months of 2025, appreciating by 40.7% against the US dollar.

According to the latest data from the Bank of Ghana’s Summary of Economic and Financial Data for the period ending July 2025, as of July, the cedi was trading at GH¢10.45 to the US dollar on the interbank market.

The local currency gained significant ground in May, appreciating by 43% against the dollar, and maintained momentum in June with a 42.6% gain.

The cedi also strengthened against other major currencies. It appreciated by 25.6% and 24.2% against the euro, trading at GH¢12.11 and GH¢12.25 on the interbank market in June and July, respectively.

Against the British pound, the cedi gained 30.3% and 31.2%, in June and July, with the exchange rate currently standing at GH¢14.02.

Over the past two weeks, the cedi has held firm against the dollar and other major currencies. It closed at a mid-rate of GH¢10.48 per US dollar on the interbank market, reflecting a marginal 0.47% depreciation. On the retail market, the cedi is trading at an average mid-rate of GH¢12.00 per dollar.

Year-to-date, the cedi has appreciated by 29.38% against the dollar.

In recent months, the local currency, has been on an upward trajectory.

It opened the year trading at approximately GH¢15 to the US dollar, but has since strengthened to around GH¢10.45 on the interbank market.

Government has attributed the cedi’s rebound to improved macroeconomic fundamentals, higher export earnings, and renewed investor confidence in the Ghanaian economy.

Finance Minister, Dr. Ato Forson, presenting the Mid-year Budget review last week said the Cedi’s appreciation is already translating into price stability, with marginal declines observed in the prices of certain imported goods.

He assured Ghanaians that the government is committed to maintaining the gains made so far and further stabilising the economy.

We Won’t Allow You To Bury Him

0

Daddy Lumba’s family has issued a stern warning to Odo Broni, forbidding him from taking charge of the musician’s funeral arrangements.

According to Abusuapanin Kofi Owusu, the family head and uncle of the late icon, it’s the traditional responsibility of the family to oversee the funeral rites, not Odo Broni’s.

This development follows reports that Odo Broni was preparing to lead the burial process. The family urges the public to respect their decisions and has promised to release an official statement soon.

The nation is preparing to pay tribute to the highlife legend. A candlelight vigil is scheduled to take place at Independence Square in Accra on August 2, 2025, starting at 6 p.m., organized in partnership with the Creative Arts Agency.

A book of condolence has been opened at Daddy Lumba’s private residence in Kinshasha Crescent, Accra, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has set the stage for its 2028 presidential primaries, with aspiring candidates required to pay a total of GH¢600,000 in non-refundable nomination and filing fees.

The nomination fee is GH¢100,000, while the filing fee is GH¢500,000, both payable via Bankers’ Draft in favor of the New Patriotic Party Headquarters in Accra.

Additionally, aspirants will be required to pay a Development Fee, the amount of which will be determined by the National Council.

Several notable figures have expressed interest in contesting the party’s primaries, including Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Bryan Acheampong.

The NPP’s decision to hold its presidential primaries more than two years ahead of the general elections is a strategic move to allow the eventual flagbearer ample time to consolidate support, heal internal divisions, and begin nationwide campaigning.

Government cancels $1.2 billion bauxite deal

0

Ghana has cancelled a $1.2 billion bauxite lease with local firm Rocksure International, seeking a partnership instead with a big overseas company to tap one of West Africa’s richest deposits, three sources with direct knowledge of the matter said.

Potential partners include Dubai-based Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) or a Chinese firm, two of the sources said.

The termination marks a strategic pivot by Ghana, which holds an estimated 900 million metric tons of bauxite, the seventh largest globally, but has struggled to attract sustained investment in mining and refining infrastructure.

Rocksure’s lease covered the Nyinahin Hills in central Ghana, home to about 376 million tons of bauxite, the feedstock for aluminium.

It was the basis for a joint venture between Rocksure and the state-owned Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) to build a mine and alumina refinery, with Rocksure holding 70% of the Asante Bauxite Company JV. GIADEC and the government owned 20% and 10%, respectively.

The lease was never ratified by parliament, rendering it void under a 2019 Supreme Court ruling.

“By the Exton Cubic ruling, without ratification, you have no lease,” one of the sources said, adding that the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources had informed Rocksure.

GIADEC declined to comment, citing ongoing negotiations. The lands ministry did not respond to requests for comment.

Rocksure also declined to comment.

Another of the sources said the firm had not been formally notified of the termination, only that GIADEC was exiting the JV.

Ghana, Africa’s top gold producer, lags in bauxite production behind regional peers like Guinea, a global bauxite giant.

GIADEC is now actively courting new investors, including EGA and several Chinese firms, the GIADEC source said.

EGA, which lost its basic agreement with Guinea over delays in building a refinery, signed a memorandum of understanding with GIADEC in June to explore opportunities in Ghana.

“EGA has expressed interest in jointly developing bauxite opportunities in Ghana and is currently assessing the technical and commercial parameters of such collaboration,” the company told Reuters in an email response to queries.

EGA said no binding agreement had been signed, and did not disclose investment figures, resource estimates or timelines.

A third source said EGA had previously considered investing in Ghana around 2022 but backed out to avoid jeopardizing its Guinea license. “They didn’t want Guinea to feel they were shifting focus to Ghana,” the source said.

“Sourcing bauxite from Ghana aligns with our objective to grow aluminium production by diversifying our supply base,” EGA said.

GIADEC aims to begin extraction and off-take from the area – known as Block B – in the first quarter of next year. While no deals have been finalised, talks with potential partners are at an advanced stage, according to the first source.

“We’re looking at all options to see which one serves the interest of the nation,” the first source said.

The Ghana Chamber of Mines projects national bauxite output will rise to 2 million tons in 2025, from a record 1.7 million tons this year.

Late Ghanaian legendary musician, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba play videoLate Ghanaian legendary musician, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba

Late Ghanaian legendary musician, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, has been the centre of discussions for the past days after news of his death shocked music lovers.

Daddy Lumba passed away in the early hours of Saturday, July 26, 2025, after battling a brief illness.

Before the late musician’s passing, he contributed significantly by nurturing musical talents and entertaining music lovers both in and out of the country.

The late Lumba had approximately 34 albums to his credit, and this article explores his debut album, which catapulted him into the limelight.

Lumba, in the 1980s, was part of a group called the Lumba Brothers with Nana Acheampong.

After forming the group, the musicians planned to release their first-ever album in 1986; however, due to financial constraints, their plans were ultimately abandoned.

It was in the year 1989 that Lumba was able to release his first album, titled “Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu”, with support from his first wife, Akosua Serwaa.

The late Lumba and Nana Acheampong had five songs on the album.

Nko Gyame:

The Lumba Brothers began their “Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu” album with the popular track “Nko Gyame”.

“Nko Gyame” is a love song that talks about relationship issues.

In the song, the late Lumba spoke about how he can’t survive if his lover breaks up with him.

Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu:

Lumba and Nana Acheampong’s second track was named after their album.

“Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu” talks about how they were finding it difficult to return home after staying in the diaspora for years.

The song began with a phone call from Nana Acheampong to the late Lumba. During the phone call, the two talked about how Ghanaians like to spread rumours about people who travel to seek greener pastures.

The creatives also highlighted the struggles of travellers in the diaspora.

Odo Fakye:

“Odo Fakye” is an apology song composed by the Lumba Brothers.

In the song, the late Lumba and Nana Acheampong talked about how lovers should forgive themselves after a heated argument.

Lumba, through their creativity, also talked about how he has forsaken his family and friends because of his lover.

Yenka Ntam:

“Yenka Ntam” is also one of Lumba’s hit songs on the “Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu” album.

“Yenka Ntam” is a song that speaks about promises and covenants made in a relationship.

The late Lumba, in the song, asked his lover to enter into a covenant with him, a sign to solidify their relationship.

Aban Nsa Aka Wo:

“Aban Nsa Aka Wo” is the last song on Lumba’s first-ever album.

The Highlife song, similar to the “Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu” track, despite talking about arrest, also spoke about how family should wholeheartedly welcome their members after years of staying abroad.

The creatives, based on their storyline, also noted in their song the pain and struggle individuals go through in another man’s land.

Alleged National Security operatives demolish McDan’s warehouse at Spintex – Report

0

The incident, according to a UTV report, occurred on the evening of Monday, July 28, 2025 The incident, according to a UTV report, occurred on the evening of Monday, July 28, 2025

A warehouse reportedly owned by Ghanaian business mogul Dr Daniel McKorley, popularly known as McDan, has been demolished by individuals alleged to be national security operatives.

The incident, according to a UTV report, occurred on the evening of Monday, July 28, 2025, along the Spintex Road in Accra.

Some workers who spoke to UTV News said two excavators used for the demolition exercise initially broke down before the operation could proceed. They added that the warehouse also served as their place of shelter, and despite pleading for leniency, the operatives did not heed their call.

According to the report, the demolition took place around 7:00 P.M., although the reasons behind the operation remain unclear.

“We were here when they came with excavators. We begged them to allow us take out our items from the warehouse because this is where we sleep, but they said no, that it was too late. We told them again that this is where we sleep, but they started demolishing the place.

“The excavator broke down, so they left and came back later,” One man, claiming to be a worker at the warehouse, said.

Another added, “I am the security man here. We were around at about 6:28 P.M. when the soldiers arrived in two pickups. We had no idea they were here to demolish the building.

“We pleaded with them to allow us to take our belongings, even our beds, but they refused, saying it was too late. We later managed to sneak out our beds during the demolition.”

“They kept telling us to leave without offering any explanation. Two of the machines broke down, and they brought another one. We wanted to take out our things, but one of the soldiers said no, we couldn’t take anything, a third worker narrated.

US to burn $9m worth of USAID-purchased contraceptives

0

The Trump administration is set to destroy $9.7 million worth of US-purchased contraceptives rather than deliver them to women overseas, following the dismantling of foreign assistance programs carried out by the US Agency for International Development, or USAID.

The “preliminary decision” to destroy the USAIDprocured birth control was confirmed by a State Department spokesperson, who said the cost of incinerating them would be $167,000.

The contraceptives have been housed in a warehouse in Geel, Belgium. The Belgian foreign ministry said it was engaged in diplomatic talks with the US embassy to work to find alternative solutions for the supplies.

Asked about whether the contraceptives will definitely be destroyed, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said on Tuesday that it is a “situation that changes each day.”

“We recognize the issues, but we also, of course, are committed to policy that Americans care about,” she said at a briefing.

The contraceptives are mostly long-lasting types of birth control, such as intrauterine devices (IUDs) and injectables, a US congressional aide told CNN. It is not clear exactly when the supplies will be destroyed, according to the aide.

“They have to double incinerate the products because they contain high levels of hormones and they don’t want to risk leaking the byproducts out in the environment, which likely adds to the cost,” the congressional aide said. “The Trump administration is quite literally burning taxpayer money.”

A list of the supplies, shared with CNN by another source with knowledge of the warehouse stock, shows that the contraceptives include copper IUDs, rod implants, birth control injections, and levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol tablets. Some have USAID branding, but the majority do not, according to the source’s list.

Most of the products expire in 2028 or 2029, with the earliest expiration date among the products in April 2027, according to the list detailing the nearly 5 million items.

The US State Department spokesperson referred to the contraceptives to be destroyed as “certain abortifacient birth control commodities from terminated Biden-era USAID contracts.”

There is controversy about whether to describe certain contraceptives as abortifacient, or causing abortion, due to the debate over whether life begins at the moment an egg is fertilized or at a later stage. Some birth control methods, including IUDs, may work by preventing implantation of a fertilized egg. However, IUDs primarily work by suppressing the release of eggs or by preventing sperm from reaching an egg.

“Only a limited number of commodities have been approved for disposal. No HIV medications or condoms are being destroyed,” the spokesperson added. “USAID avoided an additional $34.1 million in taxpayer costs by negotiating no-cost cancellations of pending orders placed under the Biden Administration.”

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) told CNN that there is “no such thing as an abortifacient contraceptive.”

“By definition, contraceptives prevent pregnancy – not end a pregnancy. IUDs and other forms of birth control do not cause abortion, and any suggestion otherwise is misinformation,” ACOG said on Tuesday.

Responding to media reports that the contraceptives were set to be transferred to a French medical waste facility to be destroyed by the end of July, a diplomatic source in France told CNN that the contraceptives were being handled by private entities and they had “no information concerning any transfers,” as of Thursday last week.

“We firmly support the Belgian authorities’ commitment to find a solution in order to prevent the destruction of these contraceptives, so that they may reach women and men around the world who need them and are waiting for them,” the diplomatic source added. “Access to quality sexual and reproductive health services and products is both a human rights and a public health issue.”

US Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) sent a staff member to the warehouse in Belgium as part of her effort to introduce legislation prohibiting “the destruction of any such commodities unless all efforts to sell or donate them have been exhausted.” The staffer also found that the earliest expiration date for the contraceptives was 2027, with some of the supplies not expiring until 2031, meaning they could still be used for years to come.

“At a moment when the Trump administration has made devastating cuts to foreign assistance, it is disappointing that the State Department would sign off on spending money to actually destroy paid-for commodities that would save lives and are waiting to be deployed,” Shaheen said in a statement. “Food and family planning commodities are desperately needed in conflict-affected countries, like Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where famine is taking hold.”

Belgian foreign ministry spokeswoman Florinda Baleci told CNN the country was “exploring all possible avenues to prevent the destruction of these stocks, including their temporary relocation.”

An organization called MSI Reproductive Choices said it and other funding partners had offered to pay for the shipping and repackaging of the USAID-branded supplies, but that the US government turned down the offer.

“We were not given a reason for why this offer was not accepted, but it became clear in conversations that it wouldn’t be and that our efforts would be better spent finding alternative solutions to the contraception supplies gap,” said Grace Dunne, a spokeswoman for MSI, which works in 36 countries to provide reproductive healthcare, including abortion services, contraception and maternity care.

In response to questions about the offer from CNN, the State Department highlighted the so-called “Mexico City policy,” which “prohibits providing certain assistance – directly or indirectly – to foreign nongovernmental organizations that perform or actively promote abortion as a method of family planning.”

That policy, which opponents call the “global gag rule,” prevents non-governmental organizations that provide abortions, give counseling about abortions or advocate for safe access to abortion from receiving US funding.

The planned destruction of the contraceptives has sparked an outcry from other organizations, like Doctors Without Borders (MSF), which raised concerns about contraceptive shortages in nations that were once reliant on supplies donated by USAID.

“In the communities served by MSF – whether impacted by conflict, disease outbreaks, natural and human-made disasters, or exclusion from health care – access to contraceptives is already constrained,” the organization said in a statement. “Contexts that previously relied upon USAID-funded contraceptive supplies are at a heightened risk of supply chain disruptions and stockouts.”

“MSF has seen firsthand the positive health benefits when women and girls can freely make their own health decisions by choosing to prevent or delay pregnancy – and the dangerous consequences when they cannot,” the chief executive of MSF USA, Avril Benoît, added.

MSF also cited reports saying that more USAID-branded contraceptives are being housed in a warehouse in the United Arab Emirates, but the organization said the US government’s plan for those supplies is unknown.

A State Department spokesperson did not address a question about contraceptives warehoused in the UAE. CNN has reached out to the UAE government for comment.

At the beginning of July, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio hailed the end of USAID, saying that future foreign assistance programs would align with administration policies and be administered by the State Department. The rapid dismantling of USAID, led by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has seen thousands of foreign assistance programs slashed, including many that focused on lifesaving work.

A study published earlier this month by a leading medical journal, The Lancet, estimated that the USAID funding cuts could result in more than 14 million additional deaths by 2030. USAID funding was most likely to reduce mortality related to HIV/AIDS, followed by malaria, according to the study.

Mahama asked me twice if Lumba had been contacted, but Lumba held back —A Plus Drops Revelation

0

Political activist and musician Kwame Asare Obeng, widely known as A Plus, has disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama had shown deep concern for the health of highlife legend Daddy Lumba before his reported passing.

In an interview with GhanaWeb, A Plus recounted a private conversation with the president, revealing that Mahama had observed Lumba’s declining health during their encounter at the Senior Citizens Day event. The observation, according to A Plus, prompted Mahama to reach out in hopes of offering support.

“He told me Lumba didn’t look too well and that he wanted to help,” A Plus said. “He reached out, but Lumba, being very private, said he wanted to prepare before meeting him.”

Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, was known for guarding his personal life closely, especially in recent years as health concerns limited his public appearances. A Plus explained that despite Mahama’s good intentions, Lumba chose to delay any meeting, preferring to manage his condition privately.

“The president even followed up twice, asking whether contact had been made. But Lumba, for personal reasons, decided to wait,” he added.

A Plus noted that Mahama’s concern was sincere and devoid of politics—simply one legend wanting to support another. Though the meeting never happened, he believes the president will still find meaningful ways to honour the late musician’s legacy.

“Now that he’s gone, I know the president will still do what he can to honour him,” A Plus said.

The revelation has added a human dimension to the national mourning that continues to unfold across Ghana. While tributes pour in from all walks of life, this behind-the-scenes account offers a glimpse into the compassion and quiet efforts of a former head of state to stand by a cherished cultural figure.

ADB records GH¢230m profit after tax in 6 months

0

The Agricultural Development Bank PLC (ADB) has posted a profit after tax of GH¢230.5 million for the first half of 2025, indicating strong signs of progress in the era of a bold strategic direction.

The unaudited results for the six months ending June 30, 2025, represent a nearly threefold increase in profitability, from the GH¢80 million recorded within the same period last year.

The Bank’s profit was supported by strong growth in interest income, realignment of costs and expenses, and a strategic shift in asset allocation that has helped stabilise earnings.

The Bank’s total assets rose to GH¢14.99 billion, up from GH¢11.35 billion in June 2024, representing a growth of 32%.

Customer deposits also increased significantly, reaching GH¢12.03 billion, up from GH¢10.17 billion.

The Bank further recorded a turnaround in its equity position, moving from a negative GH¢27.1 million in June 2024 to a positive GH¢1.51 billion, mainly driven by strong earnings and capital support.

While total income improved, the Bank strategically rebalanced its asset portfolio to enhance income stability and manage risk.

This included a moderated pace of growth in loans and advances to customers, alongside an increased allocation to Investment securities.

This shift supports long-term financial resilience while maintaining a prudent and sustainable approach to the Bank’s transformation agenda.

The new strategic direction of the bank, encapsulated in the Bank’s new corporate tagline, “Beyond Banking…”, places emphasis on redefining banking, empowering businesses, building futures, driving prosperity and nurturing communities.

Commenting on the half-year results, the Managing Director of the Bank, Edward Ato Sarpong, attributed the performance to deliberate steps taken to reposition ADB.

“This half-year performance is a reflection of our vision to make ADB among the top 3 banks in Ghana,” he said.

“Whilst the bank is set to be fully recapitalised next year, measures have been put in place to ensure the delivery of sustainable growth,” he added.

The Managing Director commended staff for their positive response to the Bank’s new strategic direction and for their courage and dedication to their respective tasks.

In his remarks, the Board Chairman of ADB, Kenneth Kwamena Thompson, said the half-year financial results reflect a bank that is being repositioned to take its rightful place in the banking industry.

He reiterated the Board’s unwavering support for the vision and conviction of the Managing Director and his team to turn around the fortunes of the Bank.

Politicising the Judiciary could spell doom for Ghana

0

Former Deputy Attorney General, Joseph Kpemka, has warned against politicising Ghana’s judiciary, cautioning that such actions threaten the very survival of the nation’s democracy.

Speaking during an interview on Channel One TV‘s The Big Issue on Tuesday, July 2, he stressed that while criticisms and political maneuvering may occur around the Executive and Legislature, the judiciary must be held sacrosanct and above partisan manipulation.

“We can do anything to the Executive, we can do anything to Parliament, but when we touch the judiciary, the very foundation of our democracy is gone,” Kpemka declared.

He emphasized that the moment political actors—whether from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) or the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC)—begin to politicize the judiciary, it signals a dangerous descent for the country.

“When we start playing politics with the judiciary—whether NPP or NDC—that is the beginning of the end of Ghana,” he warned.

Prophet Emmanuel Worlasi is the Head Pastor of Conquerors Chapel International, Kumasi branch Prophet Emmanuel Worlasi is the Head Pastor of Conquerors Chapel International, Kumasi branch

The Head Pastor of Conquerors Chapel International, Kumasi Branch, Prophet Emmanuel Worlasi, has recounted his ordeal following the 2024 general elections, after his prophecy came to pass.

Speaking exclusively with Etsey Atisu on GhanaWeb TV’s The Lowdown, aired on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Prophet Worlasi recounted how people created a false narrative about him, accusing him of aligning with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Prophet Emmanuel Worlasi explained that the perception of his alignment with the NDC stemmed from his accurate prophecy predicting a victory for the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, in the 2024 general elections.

He explained that this led to both verbal and physical attacks against him, recounting one such incident where his house was targeted. Fortunately, he said he was not at home at the time of the attack.

“Last year, after the election, people tagged me as an NDC prophet in Kumasi and, you know Kumasi is a strong base of the NPP. And so, for me to go to stations to say that I’ve seen that the NDC will win, it was a big deal there.

“I had so many attacks verbally and people attacked me sometimes but I was not in the house. They would go to my house to cause destruction,” the man of God recounted.

When asked by host Etsey Atisu whether he pursued legal action against those responsible for the attacks, Prophet Worlasi disclosed that he chose not to take any such steps, including reporting the incident to the police.

He explained that he had anticipated the attacks, having experienced a premonition beforehand.

“No, I just let it go because I knew that God was with me, and God was the one who gave me that utterance so, I was not afraid. Any time those things happened, I knew because I saw it ahead of time before it happened and so, I was not surprised about it,” he added.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, issued a stern reprimand to some royals of Agona who appeared before the Asanteman Council on Monday, July 28, 2025, to seek his forgiveness.

According to opemsuo.com, the Agona royals, who channeled their plea through Tepahene Nana Adusei Atwenewa Ampem, are seeking pardon over lawsuits filed against the Asantehene nearly two decades ago by their late uncle.

The lawsuits, which the Agona royals ultimately lost, were filed at the High Court, Court of Appeal, and later the Supreme Court.

The legal battle stemmed from an investigation by the Asantehene that concluded the then-reigning queen was not of royal blood.

The royals now seek the king’s forgiveness to allow the installation of a new chief to the Agona stool, which has remained vacant since the death of Agonahene Nana Frimpong Anokye Ababio in 2022.

Before the Asantehene delivered his verdict on the plea, his paramount chiefs debated the matter.

While some advocated for forgiveness, others argued the royals deserved to be punished.

Juabenhene Nana Otuo Sereboe II was among the chiefs who pleaded on their behalf.

“They are descendants of Komfo Anokye. It is a spiritual matter we are talking about here. If we decide to send away everyone who errs, Asante won’t continue to be Asante. The plea was also brought through Tepa Barnie, another great Asante deity, so let’s just punish them and not cut them off,” Nana Otuo Sereboe II said.

However, another paramount chief dissented, warning that granting forgiveness might encourage others to defy royal authority.

“If we decide to forgive them, where will the deterring factor be? You take the Asantehene to court. Why didn’t you advise your uncle against his action? And even after his action, why have you waited all this while to now bring a plea?” the chief queried.

The Asantehene, who reportedly described the Agona royals as “ingrates,” said he had personally warned their uncle, Owusu Afriyie, about the consequences of his actions, but his advice was ignored.

“I sent him a message and warned him about the repercussions of his actions. I told him, of all people, the descendants of Komfo Anokye are the least I expected this from. You are all aware of how he ended up,” the Asantehene stated.

Compounding the situation, the royals were also accused of seizing the sacred Amoampong deity and keeping it from the enstooled chief.

The king insisted that the deity must be returned before their apology could be considered.

“You have erred. You haven’t apologised, and yet you are fighting over a stool. You are apologising, and yet you haven’t restored the property you stole. Where is the remorse?” he questioned.

The Asantehene directed the Tepahene to ensure that the deity is returned to its rightful place so that purification rites can be performed before the apology is formally presented.

The leadership of the Saviour Church of Ghana has announced plans to organise a mass burial for sixteen members of its Youth Ministry who tragically lost their lives in a fatal accident on the Atwedie stretch of the Kumasi-Accra highway.

The devastating crash occurred on Monday, July 28, 2025, around 2:30PM, when a vehicle transporting the church members collided head-on with a fuel tanker travelling from the opposite direction.

The victims were returning from the Church’s annual youth programme held at its national headquarters in Obogu, located in the Asante Akyem South Municipality of the Eastern Region.

Four other victims who sustained severe injuries are currently receiving treatment at the Juaso Government Hospital.

Church leaders say the injured are responding well to medical care.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, July 29,2025, the Deputy Secretary of the Saviour Church of Ghana, Kwabena Owusu, described the incident as a heartbreaking loss for the entire church community and the Obogu township.

“I’m sad to announce the death of 16 youth of Obogu who members of the Saviour Church of Ghana were. We attended a youth programme at our national headquarters, and unfortunately, one of our vehicles was involved in a fatal accident. This caused the death of our members,” he said.

Owusu added that arrangements are underway in consultation with the bereaved families to determine a date for the mass burial.

“We have arranged with the leadership of the Church to liaise with the families to set up a date to have a mass burial for all of them. Right now, four of the survivors are responding to treatment at the Juaso Government Hospital. I have been there personally, and they are responding to treatment,” he added.

The tragic incident has thrown the Obogu community into deep mourning, with families and church members reeling from the sudden loss of so many young lives.

Israeli side Nof Hagalil sign Ghanaian midfielder Godfred Atuahene on loan

Israeli Liga Leumit outfit Nof Hagalil have confirmed the acquisition of Ghanaian midfielder Godfred Kingsley Atuahene on a season-long loan from Premier League side Ashdod FC ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

The 22-year-old continues his development in Israel’s second tier after a productive loan spell last season at SC Kfar Qasm, where he made 20 appearances and impressed with his energy and discipline in midfield.

Despite returning to Ashdod at the end of the season, the club has opted to send him back on loan in a bid to secure consistent playing time.

Atuahene first attracted international attention during his time at Dreams FC, where he played a pivotal role in their memorable 2023/24 CAF Confederation Cup run.

A composed, ball-winning midfielder with an eye for a pass, he featured 14 times in the competition, helping the Ghanaian side reach the semi-finals.

In the domestic league, he racked up 58 appearances and four goals before sealing a move to Ashdod in 2024.

A product of Liberty Professionals, Atuahene is regarded as one of Ghana’s rising midfield prospects.

His loan move to Nof Hagalil offers a vital opportunity to further refine his game and make a strong case for reintegration into the Ashdod first team in future seasons.

Ghana’s public debt drops by GH¢139bn in first half of 2025

0

Ghana’s total public debt stock declined by GH¢139 billion in the first half of 2025. According to the latest data from the Bank of Ghana, the debt stock fell from GH¢752.1 billion at the beginning of the year to GH¢613.0 billion by the end of June, despite a marginal uptick from GH¢612.1 billion recorded in May.

This significant improvement in the country’s fiscal position is a result of the government’s debt trajectory, aided by currency stability, nominal GDP growth, and restrained domestic borrowing.

However, external debt continues to dominate the country’s liabilities, putting pressure on foreign reserves and exposing the economy to exchange rate and interest rate risks.

As of June, Ghana’s external debt stood at GH¢300.3 billion or 21.4% of GDP, up slightly from GH¢296.2 billion in May.

In dollar terms, the figure rose to US$29.1 billion due to the persistent vulnerability to currency fluctuations and the cost of servicing foreign-denominated obligations.

Meanwhile, domestic debt declined to GH¢312.7 billion in June, down from GH¢315.6 billion the previous month, representing 22.3% of GDP.

The modest decline suggests improved fiscal consolidation and possibly a slowdown in local bond issuance.

The total public debt-to-GDP ratio held steady at 43.8% in June, significantly lower than the 66.8% reported in the same period last year.

This could be attributed primarily to GDP rebasing, as well as ongoing efforts to stabilise the macroeconomic environment.

While the downward trend in debt levels has been positively received by investors and markets, economists warn that structural risks remain.

Ghana’s heavy reliance on external financing means any sharp depreciation of the cedi or tightening of global financial conditions could reverse recent gains.

To consolidate the improvements, fiscal prudence, effective foreign reserve management and expanded access to concessional financing will be critical to maintaining debt sustainability and insulating the economy from future shocks.

Former Ghana U-17 goalie Ali Jarra cries out for recognition after 32 years of silence

0

Former Ghanaian international goalkeeper Ali Jarra has made an emotional appeal for recognition and justice, 32 years after an unfortunate incident ended his football career while serving the nation.

Jarra lamented the state’s neglect and indifference, noting that his calls for acknowledgment and justice have gone unheard.

In a facebook, he stated that the nation has turned its back on him after a life-changing injury sustained while playing for Ghana.

“It has been 32 long years since the unfortunate incident that changed my life forever while serving in the line of duty,” Jarra wrote on Facebook. “Throughout these decades, I have carried the weight of that day — the pain, the sacrifice, and the silence.”

“All I ever wanted was acknowledgment, justice, and a sign that my sacrifice mattered,” he added. “But instead, I have been met with neglect and indifference.”

Now, with a heavy heart but “unwavering hope,” the former shot-stopper is pleading with authorities to recognize the sacrifices made by athletes who serve the country at great personal cost.

“Let the state finally recognize the price paid by those who serve,” he concluded.

Jarra, who was part of Ghana’s 1991 U-17 World Cup-winning squad in Italy, also won silver at the 1993 U-20 World Cup in Australia and Japan 1993 FIFA World Cup, as well as gold at the 1993 African Cup in Mauritius.

Daddy Lumba’s musical DNA will not leave us anytime soon

The late highlife legend Daddy Lumba The late highlife legend Daddy Lumba

Ghanaian rapper M.anifest, has paid tribute to the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba, saying his music and influence will continue to live on for generations.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV on July 28, 2025, the lyricist described Daddy Lumba as a rare kind of artiste whose talent, mystique, and musical ability all came together perfectly.

“His music will live on. He has made great music; he’s the rare case where the legend and the mystic and the actual output of the music meet, and then it works. He was a hitmaker, but he had the lyricism. I think posterity will be kind to him, and we are all grateful for what he contributed. His DNA will not leave us anytime soon,” he said.

M.anifest, also known as M.Dot, explained that Daddy Lumba was not confined to a single style of music.

He noted that the legendary singer started within the highlife genre but later evolved, creating a sound that became uniquely his own.

“They might begin somewhere, but they manage to transcend genre. And I think with almost four decades of work, at least three-plus decades, Lumba literally transcended genre.

“So, it became more about Daddy Lumba. You can associate him with Borga Highlife, different versions of highlife; he was prolific, he was relevant through different eras. Just like other people, at some point, they go beyond genre,” he added.

Daddy Lumba passed away on July 26, 2025, after a short illness. He died at The Bank Hospital in Cantonments, Accra.

Mahama condemns student killings in Bawku, directs army to enforce peace

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has described as unacceptable the recent killing of students in renewed violence linked to the Bawku chieftaincy dispute.

His comments follow the killing of three students after gunmen stormed school campuses in Bawku and Nalerigu over the weekend, opening fire amid ongoing clashes. The attacks have heightened fears and disrupted life in the affected areas.

Speaking at the Jubilee House during a courtesy call by the Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, President Mahama also referenced the recent killing of a chief and another person in Kumasi, noting that these developments have undermined progress made by the Otumfuo-led mediation committee working to restore peace in Bawku.

“We cannot accept this current situation where students are shot in school and killed. We can’t accept the current situation where teachers and public officers have all run away from Bawku because they are afraid for their lives,” the President stated.

President Mahama appealed to both the Kusasis and Mamprusis to give peace a chance, adding that those behind the continued violence are determined to derail the mediation efforts.

He revealed that the military’s role in the area has now shifted from peacekeeping to peace enforcement following his directive, signalling a more forceful response to ongoing acts of violence.

“That means they are going to be a bit more robust with anybody who is involved in criminality,” he said.

The President urged for calm not only in Bawku but also in other conflict-prone areas such as Nkwanta, where similar tensions continue to pose threats to national peace and security.

Bright Simons criticises uniBank settlement, says only 10.6% of lost funds recovered

0

Policy analyst, Bright Simons Policy analyst, Bright Simons

Policy analyst Bright Simons has criticised the government’s settlement deal with the former owners of uniBank, claiming it recovers just a fraction of the money lost in the bank’s failure.

In a post on social media platform X, he said the GH¢2 billion recovery announced by the Attorney General represents “barely 10.6%” of the over GH¢18 billion ($1.5 billion) in losses he estimates were incurred by the state, depositors, and other creditors.

He argued that the deal, made up of GH¢800 million in forfeited properties and GH¢1.2 billion from debt repayments, is “financially weak and poorly explained.”

He also questioned the decision to drop criminal charges against uniBank’s majority shareholders, suggesting the state has lost its leverage.

Simons pointed to a 2018 letter in which uniBank’s main shareholder admitted to liabilities of GH¢4.9 billion, far above the GH¢3.3 billion now being claimed by the government.

He also cited KPMG’s audit, which showed uniBank’s total obligations at nearly GH¢9.2 billion before it was shut down in August 2018.

“Even the liability that the former owners of uniBank themselves admit they are responsible for, over $1 billion, has not been covered in this ‘settlement’,” he said.

Simons criticised the lack of response from key institutions like the Bank of Ghana and the official Receiver, calling on them to speak publicly on the matter.

“In any serious country, the press conference of the AG today would be the BEGINNING, not the end, of the national debate about how Ghana tackles national financial losses involving the rich and powerful in society,” he stated.

The Attorney General announced the deal on Monday, July 28, 2025, ending years of legal battles following the collapse of uniBank during Ghana’s banking sector cleanup.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Malik Basintale, has expressed his agency’s readiness to deepen its collaboration with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to enhance youth-focused development in the country.

Speaking during a courtesy call by GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku and members of the Executive Council on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Basintale reaffirmed YEA’s longstanding relationship with the football body and pledged to build on the successes achieved so far.

“I have engaged the President of the GFA on ways of exploring opportunities for the youth of our nation,” he said. “The YEA and the GFA have a longstanding relationship, and we’ll seek to build on it.”

The meeting focused on mutually beneficial initiatives, including financial support for women’s football, employment opportunities in refereeing, coaching, and football administration, as well as broader sports-related programs.

Basintale noted the positive national response to the Black Queens’ performance at the recent Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, adding that such achievements reflect football’s potential to empower the youth.

He concluded by welcoming the GFA’s initiative and pledged the YEA’s full cooperation in ensuring meaningful impact for Ghana’s youth.

UK to recognise Palestinian state unless Israel meets conditions

0

The UK will recognise a Palestinian state in September unless Israel takes “substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza”, Sir Keir Starmer has said.

The PM said Israel must also meet other conditions, including agreeing to a ceasefire, committing to a long-term sustainable peace that delivers a two-state solution, and allowing the United Nations to restart the supply of aid, or the UK would take the step at September’s UN General Assembly.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the move “rewards Hamas’s monstrous terrorism”.

The UK government has previously said recognition should come at a point when it can have maximum impact, as part of a peace process.

However, the PM has been under growing pressure – including from his own MPs – to act more quickly.

Last week, France also announced it would officially recognise a Palestinian state in September – the first of the G7 group of the world’s richest countries to do so.

Giving a news conference after holding an emergency cabinet meeting, Sir Keir said he was announcing the plan now because of the “intolerable situation” in Gaza and concern that “the very possibility of a two-state solution is reducing”.

He told reporters that the UK’s goal of “a safe, secure Israel alongside a viable and sovereign Palestinian state” was “under pressure like never before”.

The PM added that his “primary aim” was to improve the situation on the ground in Gaza, including ensuring that aid gets in.

In outlining the steps the UK wanted the Israeli government to take, Sir Keir also said it should make clear there will be no annexations in the West Bank.

The current Israeli government is opposed to progress towards a two-state solution, so it is highly unlikely to agree to the conditions.

Meanwhile, Sir Keir said Hamas must immediately release all hostages, sign up to a ceasefire, disarm, and accept that they will play no part in the government of Gaza.

In response to the announcement, Netanyahu wrote on social media: “A jihadist state on Israel’s border TODAY will threaten Britain TOMORROW.

“Appeasement towards jihadist terrorists always fails. It will fail you, too. It will not happen.”

Asked if he knew the PM’s statement was coming, Donald Trump said the pair “never discussed it” during their meeting on Monday, when the US president was in Scotland.

He told reporters: “You could make the case… that you are rewarding Hamas if you do that. And I don’t think they should be rewarded.”

The US – along with many European nations – has said it would only recognise a Palestinian state as part of moves towards a long-term resolution to the conflict.

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey welcomed the government’s announcement as “a crucial step” but urged the PM to recognise a Palestinian state immediately, and pursue “far greater action to stop the humanitarian disaster in Gaza”.

He added: “Rather than use recognition, which should have taken place many months ago, as a bargaining chip, the prime minister should be applying pressure on Israel by fully ceasing arms sales, and implementing sanctions against the Israeli cabinet.”

Some 255 MPs have signed a letter calling for the government to immediately recognise a Palestinian state – including more than half of Labour MPs.

Labour MP Sarah Champion, who coordinated the letter, said she was “delighted and relieved” at the announcement.

“This will put political pressure on Israel and make clear what’s happening in Gaza and the West Bank is totally unacceptable,” she said.

“However, I’m troubled our recognition appears conditional on Israel’s actions.

“Israel is the occupier, and recognition is about the self-determination of the Palestinian people. The two should be separate.”

The Conservatives and Reform UK have said now is not the right time to take the step, arguing this would reward Hamas for their attack on Israel on 7 October 2023.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said recognising a Palestinian state “won’t bring the hostages home, won’t end the war and won’t get aid into Gaza”.

“This is political posturing at its very worst,” she added.

The announcement comes after a call between Sir Keir and the leaders of France and Germany over the weekend, when Downing Street said plans for a sustainable route to a two-state solution were discussed.

However, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said his government had no plans to recognise a Palestinian state in the near future, suggesting this may be “one of the last steps on a path to realising a two-state solution”.

Most countries – about 139 in all – formally recognise a Palestinian state.

Spain, Ireland, and Norway took the step last year, hoping to exert diplomatic pressure to secure a ceasefire in Gaza.

Palestinian representatives currently have limited rights to participate in UN activity, and the territory is also recognised by various international organisations, including the Arab League.

Sceptics argue recognition is largely a symbolic gesture unless questions over the leadership and extent of a Palestinian state are addressed first.

‘King of Movies’ yet seeking Nigerian validation – Agya Koo jabs LilWin

0

Veteran Kumawood actor Agya Koo has taken a swipe at fellow actor LilWin following the latter’s recent statement in an interview making rounds on social media.

In the interview, LilWin boldly referred to himself as the “King of Movies,” a claim that did not sit well with Agya Koo.

Responding in a post shared on social media, Agya Koo mocked LilWin for declaring himself the king while allegedly seeking fame and validation from Nigeria.

“You claim your time is now? Nigerian movies weren’t widely accepted in Ghana back in my day, but my movies were the talk of the town.

“You’re chasing recognition in Nigeria, yet you’re claiming to be the king? Keep pushing the boundaries of art, and then stop making noise, actor Kwame,” he said.

Agya Koo further jabbed LilWin, saying he inspired the actor’s music journey. but criticised the style.

“I’ve transitioned to live band and I’m loving it. You’re also making music, and I’m proud to have inspired many actors and actresses, including you. Just that you make noise on beat like some Bantama ‘Kwenkwen’ seller,” he added.

Court dismisses another request for disclosure by lawyers of the Adu Boahenes

0

Former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu Boahene Former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu Boahene

The High Court in Accra has once again dismissed a request for disclosure by the lawyer of the embattled former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu Boahene, in the ongoing GH¢49 million NSB trial.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com, the lawyer of Adu Boahene (the 1st accused in the case) and his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng (the 2nd accused), Samuel Atta Akyea, filed a motion seeking disclosure of several documents, including the bill of lading for a BMW vehicle, documents evidencing the port of entry, and the police docket related to the vehicle.

Atta Akyea argued that the documents requested would help determine a claim by the prosecution that Adu Boahene had actually imported a stolen vehicle.

The Deputy Attorney General (AG), Dr Justice Srem-Sai, who was representing the state, opposed the motion, stating that the accused person should have the documents in relation to the vehicle because his name appeared as both importer and exporter in the customs declaration.

“The bill of lading is irrelevant and not in our possession. The customs declaration form already provides the necessary importation details,” the Deputy AG is quoted to have said.

The presiding judge, Justice John Eugene Nyante Nyadu, partially dismissed the application, indicating that some documents were not relevant to the trial, while others were not in the possession of the prosecution.

He ruled that the information sought under the first three categories of the motion, namely the bill of lading, port of entry, and vehicle clearance documents, had been sufficiently addressed through disclosures already made in the supplementary witness statement filed by prosecution witness Frank Cromwell.

The judge also ruled that even though the Attorney General’s office claimed it did not possess the police docket requested, the Police CID had shared limited extracts from their database.

He, therefore, directed; “Ghana Police Service to directly provide all relevant information in their possession concerning the BMW 740D with chassis number J020CM11428 to the defence team.”

The case was adjourned to Thursday, July 31, 2025, for the hearing of another pending motion.

The court had earlier dismissed a request by Adu Boahene’s lawyer for access to operational account details of National Security Coordinators dating back to 1992.

The Office of the Attorney General slapped Kwabena Adu Boahene; his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng; their associate, Mildred Boateng; and a company jointly owned by Adu Boahene and his wife, Advantage Solutions Limited, with 11 charges for allegedly transferring GH¢49 million (approximately $7 million) from the bureau’s account to his personal account.

Addressing the press on Monday, March 24, 2025, the Attorney General, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, stated that Adu Boahene was implicated in the unauthorised transfer of $7 million, originally allocated for cybersecurity infrastructure, into his private accounts.

“In his capacity as Director of the National Signals Bureau, Adu Boahene, on January 30, 2020, signed a contract on behalf of the Government of Ghana and the National Security on the one hand, and on the other hand, an Israeli company named RLC Holdings Limited. The contract was for the purchase of a cyber defence system software at a price of $7 million,” the Attorney General said.

The highs and lows of Africa’s premier women’s football showpiece

0

When Morocco was awarded the right to host the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), the expectations were enormous.

The North African nation had dazzled the continent in the 2022 edition, breaking attendance records and setting a new bar for women’s football hospitality.

Three years later, the return of the competition to Moroccan soil was marked by breathtaking moments, increased prize money, and bold performances.

But it also exposed significant flaws, from empty stadiums to disturbing scenes of gamesmanship.

Here’s a closer look at the highs and lows of the tournament that crowned Nigeria champions for a record 10th time.

The highs

Uplift in quality football

One of the most obvious positives from WAFCON 2024 was the quality of football on display.

From tactical discipline to improved technical execution, teams came prepared. Nigeria’s thrilling comeback against Morocco in the final, Ghana’s slick attacking play in the group stage, and Morocco’s midfield dominance showed that African women’s football is evolving rapidly.

Several players emerged as genuine stars, including Nigeria’s Esther Okoronkwo, Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebbak, and Ghana’s Grace Asantewaa, delivering performances that would not look out of place on any global stage.

Increase in prize money

In what was perhaps the most significant off-the-pitch development, CAF announced a historic increase in prize money for the tournament.

The total prize pool for WAFCON 2024 was raised by 45 percent, bringing it to a record-setting 3.475 million US dollars.

Most notably, the winner’s prize was doubled, up from 500,000 dollars in 2022 to 1 million dollars this year.

The runners-up took home 500,000 dollars, while the third-placed team earned 350,000 dollars and the fourth-placed side received 300,000.

Each of the four quarter-finalists walked away with 200,000 dollars. Even group-stage finishers were rewarded: teams that finished third in their groups received 150,000 dollars each, and the fourth-placed teams got 125,000 dollars apiece.

CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe said the increase was part of the confederation’s long-term commitment to making women’s football across Africa more competitive, sustainable, and financially rewarding for players, coaches, and federations.

Expanded global reach

CAF also secured wider broadcast partnerships, making the games more accessible across the continent and beyond.

Fans from Accra, Abuja, London were able to stream or watch matches in real-time, a shift that strengthened visibility and drew in sponsors.

The lows: attendance and empty stadiums

Despite the raised standards on the pitch, the tournament struggled with visibly low attendance.

Several group-stage matches were played in near-empty stadiums, a far cry from the electric atmosphere of WAFCON 2022.

Even some knockout games lacked the energy expected at this level. Experts blamed poor local promotion, scheduling conflicts, and the use of oversized venues that made even decent crowds look sparse on camera.

Laser incidents

In one of the more alarming moments of the tournament, laser lights were aimed at Ghana’s and Nigeria’s players during the final and semi-final against Morocco, respectively.

The lasers were visible during key moments, including throw-ins, free-kicks, and penalties, in what many believe was a deliberate attempt to distract opponents.

The incident drew widespread condemnation, with many calling for stricter security protocols and harsher sanctions for such unsporting behaviour.

CAF has yet to formally address the matter, but pressure is mounting for the governing body to investigate the incident and ensure such tactics are not repeated in future competitions.

WAFCON 2024 will be remembered for both its groundbreaking steps forward and the issues that still hold the women’s game back on the continent.

Nigeria’s triumph after a gritty campaign reinforced their dominance, while Morocco proved their run to the 2022 final was no fluke. On the individual front,

new stars were born, and prize money soared to unprecedented levels.

But the lack of packed stadiums, fan engagement, and incidents like the laser targeting serve as a wake-up call for CAF and local organisers.

Dr Amin Adam accuses BoG of printing money to fund GoldBod operations

0

Former Minister of Finance Dr Mohammed Amin Adam Former Minister of Finance Dr Mohammed Amin Adam

The former Minister of Finance Dr Mohammed Amin Adam has accused the Bank of Ghana (BoG) of engaging in monetary financing by printing money to pre-finance operations of the newly established Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).

Speaking at a press briefing on July 29, 2025, Dr Amin Adam alleged that the central bank stepped in to fund GoldBod’s gold purchases because the government failed to provide the necessary budgetary support.

He cited that under the 2025 national budget, some US$279 million was allocated to GoldBod, which is the statutory agency tasked with formalising gold procurement from artisanal and small-scale miners and supporting traceability in gold exports.

“Even with all the noise they made about the GoldBod, including pushing the GoldBod Bill through a certificate of emergency, the Minister has not released a cent out of the $279 million that he allocated as a revolving fund for GoldBod,” Dr Amin Adam said.

“Currently, the Bank of Ghana has been pre-financing the gold purchases. This is a clear case of monetary financing. The IMF programme frowns on monetary financing; printing money, monetary financing of the government,” he claimed.

Meanwhile, the Bank of Ghana has denied the allegation.

In a press statement issued earlier this month, the central bank rejected claims of unauthorised money printing.

The central bank insisted that no funds had been advanced without parliamentary approval and also reaffirmed its commitment to monetary discipline.

Despite the denial, Dr Amin Adam warned that such a financing arrangement, if true, would violate the current IMF program conditions and risk fueling inflationary pressures that could threaten Ghana’s economic recovery.

Dr Amin Adam also criticised the governing NDC for attempting to take credit for the country’s recent credit rating upgrade by Fitch Ratings.

CAF 2nd Vice President and GFA President, Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, delivered a passionate address at the Jubilee House during the Black Queens’ courtesy call on the Presidency following their historic bronze medal finish at the 2024 WAFCON in Morocco.

Okraku expressed gratitude to the Presidency for its continued support of Ghana football, hailing the Black Queens’ performance as a “turning point” for women’s football in the country.

“The Black Queens’ performance is a testament to the strength, talent, and right investments made in women’s football since this administration took office in 2019,” he said.

He noted that the achievement went beyond a medal, giving hope to every young girl in Ghana that dreams of playing football are valid and within reach. President Simeon-Okraku praised head coach Kim Lars Björkegren and his technical team for transforming the team, and the players for their discipline, unity, and resilience.

With the right investment, policy backing, and consistent support, Okraku believes Ghana can return to the top in Africa and be counted among the world’s best. He appealed for increased investment in infrastructure, youth development, and welfare systems for female players, emphasizing the need to build on the momentum created by the team’s recent success.

President Simeon-Okraku pledged the GFA’s commitment to the government’s agenda in sports, particularly in resetting and developing football. The Black Queens’ visit to the Presidency was part of their official homecoming engagements after a commendable showing at WAFCON 2024.
