Mahama’s appointment of Kojo Choi a diplomatic masterstroke – AIGS

0

The Africa Institute on Governance and Security (AIGS) has lauded President John Dramani Mahama for what it describes as a “visionary” and “strategic” diplomatic decision — the appointment of Mr. Kojo Choi as Ghana’s Ambassador-Designate to the Republic of South Korea.

In a statement signed by Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, Governance Specialist and Security Strategist at the Institute, AIGS commended the President for his forward-thinking approach to international relations.

The institute described the appointment as a “diplomatic masterstroke” that exemplifies Ghana’s commitment to inclusive, culturally informed, and innovation-driven diplomacy.

Mr. Kojo Choi, a fintech entrepreneur of Ghanaian and Korean heritage, is seen by AIGS as a bridge between African and Asian cultures, with the unique capacity to deepen bilateral ties through shared heritage, technological cooperation, and mutual economic growth.

“Mr. Choi’s appointment underscores President Mahama’s recognition of the evolving nature of global diplomacy, where diversity, cross-cultural understanding, and expertise in emerging fields like technology and trade are critical to advancing national and continental interests,” the statement noted.

AIGS emphasised that the choice of Mr. Choi aligns with principles of good governance, strategic diplomacy, and Africa’s aspirations under frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

His background in digital finance and his bicultural experience make him, according to the institute, uniquely positioned to drive partnerships in vital sectors such as artificial intelligence, green energy, and smart agriculture.

The Institute further noted that this appointment sets a powerful precedent for African diplomacy — one that leverages the strength of the diaspora and dual-identity professionals to redefine Africa’s engagement with the world.

“This move serves as a model for other African nations, highlighting the transformative potential of embracing the global dimensions of diplomacy in a rapidly changing world,” the statement added.

The Africa Institute on Governance and Security expressed confidence that Mr. Choi’s tenure will strengthen Ghana–South Korea relations and elevate Ghana’s stature on the global stage.

Govt deploys Armed Forces to Bawku, curfew reviewed as violence escalates

0

The Government has announced a shift in its strategy for addressing the long-standing Bawku chieftaincy conflict, moving from a peacekeeping posture to active peace enforcement following a recent surge in violence in the area.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, July 27, 2025, the presidency stated that the escalation of the conflict threatens to derail the progress made in previous peacebuilding efforts and necessitates stronger intervention to protect lives and property.

To that end, the Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to Bawku and other affected areas to enforce curfews and maintain law and order. The government states that all necessary measures will be taken to restore stability.

“The Ghana Armed Forces will take all necessary measures to protect lives and property,” the statement read. “We assure the public that this peace enforcement operation is aimed solely at ensuring the safety and security of all residents, including students.”

The Government commended His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his ongoing efforts to mediate the conflict, and acknowledged the vital roles played by the Nayiri and Zugraana in supporting a near-resolution.

However, officials say a recent spate of killings has reversed some of the progress and now calls for firmer action.

“Otumfuo’s mediation, with the genuine help of the Nayiri and Zugraana, had almost brought finality to the conflict until the very recent killings,” the statement noted. “This has necessitated drastic actions to protect all in the interests of the greater good.”

Residents in the affected areas are urged to remain calm, refrain from violence, and fully cooperate with the Armed Forces. Government acknowledged that the operation may cause inconvenience to law-abiding citizens but emphasized its commitment to restoring peace and long-term stability in the region.

The statement was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP and Spokesperson to the President.

Meanwhile, the Bawku Senior High School has been temporarily closed by the Municipal Education Directorate following the fatal shooting of a third-year student, Hakim Kundima, on the school’s campus.

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has also reviewed of the curfew hours imposed on Bawku Municipality and its adjoining communities in the Upper East Region.

Effective Sunday, July 27, 2025, the new curfew hours will run from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily, until further notice. The adjustment was made based on the advice of the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and issued by Executive Instrument.

The Bawku Senior High School has been temporarily closed by the Municipal Education Directorate following the fatal shooting of a third-year student, Hakim Kundima, on the school’s campus.

According to Citi News sources, the incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, when unknown assailants reportedly scaled the school’s perimeter wall, entered the dormitory, and forcibly dragged the student outside before shooting him in what appears to be a targeted attack.

The attackers fled the scene immediately after the incident. As of the time of reporting, no arrests had been made.

The victim’s elder brother, Tahiru Kundima, confirmed the incident to the media and disclosed that the Bawku Divisional Police Commander personally delivered the body to the family.

He alleged that the killing may be connected to the long-standing conflict in the Bawku area, which has seen recurring violence in recent years.

On Sunday, July 27, Bawku Municipal Director of Education, Isaac Agbeko Azasoo, announced the school’s closure, citing safety concerns for both students and staff.

The tragic incident comes on the heels of a similar attack at Nalerigu Senior High School, where two students were shot and killed by unidentified gunmen on the same evening, further heightening concerns about security in senior high schools within the region.

Investigations into the Bawku shooting are ongoing. Authorities have yet to provide official details on the motive or suspects involved.

When ‘What is Coding?’ becomes Ghana’s digital wake-up call

0

The Question That Shocked Young People

On Friday, July 25, 2025, a simple question during Ghana’s parliamentary vetting proceedings sparked a conversation that would resonate across continents. When Jerry Ahmed Shaib, MP for Weija-Gbawe, asked Deputy Minister-designate for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations Mohammed Adams Sukparu to define coding, the response stunned the committee.

“Coding is providing training for young men and women in the IT space,” Sukparu answered confidently. “Training them in web design, training them in how to build software, and what have you. Basically, this is what coding is, Mr. Chairman.”

The visible surprise on committee members’ faces and Shaib’s gentle correction—”You should understand coding some more, but I wish you well”—captured a moment that transcends one individual’s knowledge gap. It illuminated a fundamental challenge facing not just Ghana, but governments worldwide: How do we ensure our leaders understand the digital tools shaping our future?

A Global Digital Literacy Crisis Unfolds

The irony of Sukparu’s confusion is particularly striking given Ghana’s ambitious One Million Coders Programme, launched just three months earlier. Within 48 hours of its launch, the programme received over 91,000 applications, demonstrating young Ghanaians’ hunger for the very skills their deputy minister couldn’t properly define.

This incident reflects a wider global challenge. According to 2025 digital literacy statistics, only 40% of people worldwide are digitally literate, despite 92% of jobs now requiring digital skills.

The disconnect is particularly pronounced in leadership positions, where senior officials often lack the digital fluency to understand the technologies they’re meant to govern.

The Millennial Management Paradox

As this digital divide widens, a fascinating shift is occurring in the global workforce. According to Glassdoor’s 2025 Worklife Trends report, millennials officially became the largest cohort of managers in the American workforce in June 2025, overtaking Generation X. This generational handoff marks more than a demographic curiosity, it signals a fundamental shift in how organisations are led.

Yet this transition comes with a price. Glassdoor reports that mentions of burnout in employee reviews have spiked 73% year-over-year as of May 2025.

The MetLife 2021 study found that 42% of millennial managers report being burned out, compared to just 27% of Gen X and 21% of Baby Boomers. As lead economist Daniel Zhao notes, millennial managers are “stuck between a rock and a hard place,” expected to demonstrate emotional intelligence while managing unprecedented stress levels.

Africa’s Digital Champions Show the Way

While Ghana grapples with its digital literacy challenge, other African nations are pioneering innovative approaches that could revolutionise how we bridge generational and knowledge divides.

Rwanda’s Transformation Under Paula Ingabire

Paula Ingabire, Rwanda’s 41-year-old Minister of ICT and Innovation, demonstrates what digitally literate leadership looks like. This MIT-educated engineer has positioned Rwanda as “The Digital Heart of Africa” through initiatives that would be impossible without deep technical understanding.

Under her leadership, Rwanda’s digital literacy rate jumped from 8.9% to 53%, with a target of 100% by 2029. The country’s Irembo e-governance platform now serves 9+ million users with 106 digitised public services, saving citizens 23 million hours previously spent in government offices.

“We see ourselves as a proof-of-concept destination for innovative companies and start-ups to launch, test, and scale,” Ingabire told the World Economic Forum. Named to Apolitical’s Government AI 100 list for 2025, she advocates for inclusive digital transformation that brings everyone along, not just the tech-savvy.

Nigeria’s Ambitious Vision

Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, has set audacious targets: achieving 70% digital literacy by 2027 and 95% by 2030. His flagship 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme attracted 1.7 million applications, with support from MTN Nigeria (₦3 billion) and Google.org (₦2.8 billion).

“Digital literacy doesn’t mean that 90% of Nigerians will become tech talents,” Tijani explains, “but they would be given the foundation to choose to participate in the digital economy.” This nuanced understanding—knowing that not everyone needs to code, but leaders must understand what coding enables—could serve as a model for addressing leadership gaps globally.

The Corporate Solution: Reverse Mentoring Takes Centre Stage

The answer to bridging this digital divide may lie in approaches pioneered by corporations facing similar generational challenges. Jack Welch revolutionised General Electric in 1999 by pairing 500 senior executives with employees under 25 to learn about the internet and personal computing. This “reverse mentoring” concept has evolved into a powerful tool for bridging knowledge gaps.

BNY Mellon’s Pershing division demonstrates the impact: their reverse mentoring programme achieved a 96% retention rate among participating millennials from 2013-2016, well above industry averages. Companies like Estée Lauder, PwC, and Citibank have adapted the model to address everything from digital skills to diversity and inclusion.

Technology Transformation Accelerates Globally

As African nations grapple with digital literacy, the global technology landscape continues its relentless advance. McKinsey’s 2025 technology trends outlook highlights AI as both a powerful technology wave and a foundational amplifier of other trends, accelerating progress in robotics, bioengineering, and energy systems.

The urgency is underscored by recent security incidents. A major vulnerability in Microsoft SharePoint has compromised government agencies and businesses globally, with tens of thousands of servers at risk and no patch yet available. Such incidents highlight why leaders must understand not just what technology can do, but also its vulnerabilities and limitations.

Meanwhile, Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked 2025 showcased how AI is being woven into the fabric of daily life, while Deloitte’s Tech Trends 2025 predicts we’ll eventually think of AI “in the same way that we think of HTTP or electricity”—not as something we actively use, but as infrastructure that makes everything work better.

The Path Forward: Learning from Success

For Ghana, the solution involves multiple approaches:

1. Mandatory Digital Literacy for Senior Officials

Not everyone needs to code, but everyone making technology policy should understand what coding enables. Nigeria’s DL4ALL programme targets 70% digital literacy by 2027 through practical training in six areas: device operation, information literacy, communication, content creation, online safety, and problem-solving.

2. Reverse Mentoring Programmes

Following corporate examples, pairing tech-savvy younger officials with senior leaders creates structured learning exchanges. As AIHR’s guide notes, successful programmes like Heineken’s since 2021 help senior marketers understand emerging consumer trends and social media preferences.

3. Cultural Respect in Digital Transformation

The millennial management approach emphasises psychological safety and continuous learning. As recent burnout research shows, 82% of employees are at risk of burnout in 2025, with Gen Z and millennials experiencing peak burnout at age 25 rather than the traditional 42.

4. Measuring What Matters

Track digital literacy among decision-makers, not just citizens. Rwanda’s approach under Ingabire shows that success requires both top-down policy and bottom-up implementation, with Digital Ambassadors training over 27,000 citizens across all 30 districts since 2017.

The Millennial Bridge: Promise and Peril

The rise of millennial managers offers both opportunity and challenge. While they bring digital fluency and collaborative leadership styles, 84% of millennials report experiencing burnout in their current roles. The Society for Human Resource Management notes that 44% of US employees feel burned out at work, with 51% feeling “used up” at the end of the workday.

This burnout crisis, traced back to Anne Helen Petersen’s viral 2019 Buzzfeed article that coined the term “millennial burnout,” reflects the generation’s experience of being born into a constant work culture. Now, as they become managers, the average number of direct reports has almost doubled, piling additional stress onto an already burned-out generation.

Yet these same stressed millennials are implementing the solutions. Reverse mentoring programmes at companies like IBM, PwC, and Unilever demonstrate how younger employees can share insights on everything from LGBTQ+ experiences to consumer trends, while gaining exposure to senior leadership.

A Continental Imperative

As Africa positions itself for digital leadership, incidents like Ghana’s serve as important checkpoints. They remind us that transformation requires more than infrastructure and programmes—it demands leaders who understand the tools of transformation.

The examples of Ingabire, Tijani, and Kenya’s Ambassador Philip Thigo (Africa’s first Special Envoy on Technology) prove that Africa has such leaders. Their success shows that with the right approach, digital literacy gaps can be bridged effectively and authentically.

The deputy minister’s confusion about coding may have been embarrassing, but it’s also an opportunity. By learning from African digital leaders and millennial management approaches, Ghana—and other nations facing similar challenges—can transform digital literacy from a leadership liability into a competitive advantage.

As Deloitte’s 2025 Gen Z and Millennial Survey reveals, 74% of Gen Zs and 77% of millennials believe generative AI will impact their work within the next year. They’re focused on developing both technical and soft skills, seeking careers that balance money, meaning, and wellbeing.

The question “What is coding?” may have stumped one nominee, but it sparked a conversation Africa—and the world—needs to have. As governments launch digital initiatives from Kenya’s Silicon Savannah to Egypt’s Digital Egypt to South Africa’s 4IR strategy, ensuring leaders understand these technologies isn’t just important; it’s imperative.

Because in the end, coding isn’t just about training young people in IT. It’s about writing Africa’s digital future—one line of progress at a time. And for that to happen, those holding the pen must at least understand what they’re writing with.

Daniel Afriyie Barnieh enjoyed a dream debut for FC Aarau, scoring and assisting in their 3-1 home win over Bellinzona in the opening fixture of the 2025/26 Swiss Challenge League on Saturday, July 26, 2025, a match that was ultimately abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch.

Barnieh, who recently signed a two-year deal with Aarau after parting ways with FC Zurich, made an instant impact for his new club.

With the game level at 1-1, the 28-year-old turned provider in the 54th minute, setting up Valon Fazliu to make it 2-1.

Just two minutes later, he capped off a brilliant passage of play by scoring his first goal in Aarau colours, extending their lead to 3-1.

His performance not only lit up the Brügglifeld Stadium but also gave fans a glimpse of the experience and quality he brings to the side.

Barnieh, who has previously featured in the Swiss Super League and represented Ghana at international level, is expected to play a key role in Aarau’s promotion push this season.

Unfortunately, the match couldn’t be completed, as torrential rain rendered the pitch unplayable, forcing officials to abandon the game despite Aarau leading comfortably.

Mugabe Maase Appointed to TOR Board After Criticizing Mahama

News Hub Creator19h

Mugabe Silifu Maase, a prominent Ghanaian journalist and host of Inside Politics, has landed a seat on the Board of Directors at Tema Oil Refinery (TOR). The news was shared by Power FM, where Maase also serves as General Manager.

This move follows his vocal criticism of the NDC and former President Mahama for leaving out pro-NDC journalists from key political roles, despite their dedication to the party’s 2024 campaign. In a viral clip from his TV XYZ show, Maase called out the government for favoring media personalities from stations like Joy FM and TV3 over loyal journalists from outlets such as Radio Gold and Accra FM.

He even singled out figures like Bobie Ansah who, he believes, deserved recognition. Maase spoke emotionally about the sacrifices he and others made—campaigning late into the night and even sleeping on floors—only to feel abandoned by the administration they supported.

Now, with this TOR board appointment, many see it as a form of long-overdue recognition. There’s hope that Maase’s passion and commitment will bring fresh energy and reforms to the refinery’s leadership.

GRA boss tours Coca-Cola Ghana to deepen tax compliance, industry collaboration

As part of a renewed drive to strengthen tax compliance and foster strategic partnerships with the private sector, Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, led a high-level delegation to the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Ghana in Tema on Friday, July 25, 2025.

The visit formed part of the GRA’s stakeholder engagement strategy to deepen mutual understanding with key industry players and promote a collaborative approach to tax administration.

The Commissioner-General and his team were taken on a detailed tour of the facility to gain firsthand insight into the company’s production processes and operational dynamics.

In discussions with Coca-Cola’s management, Mr. Sarpong emphasized the importance of strategic cooperation in addressing national challenges such as smuggling, counterfeiting, and revenue leakages. He stated:

“We are in a war against smuggling, a threat that undermines national development. The private sector cannot be left to fight this battle alone. At GRA, we are deploying a combination of intelligence gathering, satellite surveillance, and robust human resource strategies to curb these illegal activities. This collaborative effort is essential to safeguarding the integrity of our economy.”

The Commissioner-General also announced the upcoming launch of “Sustained Tax Education,” a national initiative aimed at promoting voluntary tax compliance through public education and awareness campaigns. The initiative will focus on deepening citizens’ understanding of tax policies, obligations, and the benefits of compliance.

The Managing Director of the West Africa Business Unit of the Equatorial Coca-Cola Bottling Company, bottlers of Coca-Cola beverages in North and West Africa, Felix Gomis welcomed the GRA’s visit and reiterated the company’s commitment to full compliance with Ghana’s tax laws.

“We appreciate this engagement with the GRA and value the opportunity to strengthen our partnership. Responsible corporate citizenship and support for national development remain central to our operations,” Mr Gomis said.

The visit highlighted the GRA’s commitment to proactive stakeholder engagement, in line with President John Mahama’s “Reset Agenda,” which prioritizes business survival, job creation, revenue mobilization, and sustainable development.

Mr. Sarpong was accompanied by senior officials of the Authority, including Brigadier General Glover Anang, Commissioner of Customs; Mrs. Elsie Appau-Klu, Technical Advisor to the Commissioner-General; and Mr. Eric Bonney, Assistant Commissioner, Preventive Customs Division.

EOCO Links Foreign Trafficking to Landlord Negligence, Demands Legal Reform

Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) reports foreign nationals dominate 80% of investigated human trafficking cases, with residential properties serving as key operational hubs.

Dominic Mensah, Head of EOCO’s Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, attributes this trend to landlords renting to foreigners without verifying identification, work permits, or residency status. He urged Parliament to criminalize such negligence, stating: “Unverified rentals enable syndicates exploiting women and children.”

Mensah emphasized that mandatory document checks could disrupt trafficking networks preemptively. He further advocated for enhanced asset seizure powers, noting traffickers prioritize profit over prison risk. “Confiscating wealth makes trafficking high-risk, low-reward,” he argued, pressing for law enforcement training on identifying illicit assets.

The call coincides with EOCO’s push for cross-agency collaboration and public awareness campaigns. Ghana’s 2024 Human Trafficking Report recorded 78 new cases, underscoring urgency for systemic reforms.

Hockey tournament held in Accra to honour late President Atta-Mills

0

A commemorative hockey tournament was held in Accra on Saturday to honour the memory of the late President John Evans Atta-Mills.

The 13th edition of the J.E. Atta-Mills Memorial Hockey Tournament took place at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium and was organised by the J.E. Atta-Mills Memorial Heritage in collaboration with the Veterans Hockey Club.

President Atta-Mills, a former hockey player and passionate supporter of the sport, is remembered not only for his leadership but also for his lasting contributions to sports development in Ghana.

The tournament featured a number of matches, including contests between the University of Ghana and Einstein, White Tops and Coloured Tops, the national U21 Ladies and Police Ladies, as well as a fixture between Security Services and Financial Services teams.

The event drew several prominent figures from the world of sports and public life. Among them were Samuel Atta-Mills, younger brother of the late president; Dr Benjamin Asante, President of the Ghana Hockey Association; Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director General of the National Sports Authority; Edward Awuah Nyamekye, former Chairman of the Ghana Football Association; Akrofi Mantey, a former teammate of the late president among others.

Speaking to JoySports, Dr Ben Asante highlighted the impact President Atta-Mills had on Ghana hockey.

“He was more than a hockey enthusiast,” he said.

“He actually served as President of the Ghana Hockey Association for a very long time, and he didn’t stop there.

“He was instrumental in developing facilities across the country, nurturing players and officials, and sourcing funding for hockey and other lesser-known sports. He was deeply involved in sports—and hockey, in particular, was his life.”

Dr Asante also shared a personal recollection:  “I was one of his boys. I got called up to the national team when I was about 19 and playing for the junior national team.

“He took a special interest in those of us who were in university and also representing the country.”

Reflecting on the late president’s skill on the pitch, Akrofi Mantey shared a fond memory: “If you were on the end of his crosses, you had no excuse, you had to score.”

The annual tournament continues to celebrate the sporting legacy of Professor Atta-Mills, who served as President of Ghana from 2009 until his death in 2012.

His passion for hockey remains an enduring source of inspiration for many in the sport.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency after receiving the Civil Service Award, Ambassador Jane Aheto expressed gratitude to the Civil Service for the recognition and thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for supporting her career.

“This recognition means a lot to me” Ambassador Aheto said, adding: “It has been a long journey. We have worked hard and by God’s grace we have come this far.”

“I want to encourage everybody to work hard for Ghana and God will bless us,” she added.

The Civil Service Awards celebrated distinguished civil servants who had contributed immensely to the growth of the civil service.

It was on theme: “Adapting to Automation, Artificial Intelligence, e-Governance: the Civil Service in Contemporary Governance.”

Pan-African Parliament: ‘I withdraw to avoid potential embarrassment to Ghana’

Patrick Yaw Boamah is the Okaikwei Central MP Patrick Yaw Boamah is the Okaikwei Central MP

The Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has withdrawn from his assigned role as an observer in Ghana’s delegation to the Pan-African Parliament.

The lawmaker and member of the Minority Caucus in Parliament stated that his decision stems from checks he conducted at the Pan-African Parliament Secretariat, which revealed that his role as an observer does not permit him to participate in committee meetings, but only allows him to attend them upon invitation.

In essence, his concern is that the observer’s role imposes limitations on his ability to contribute.

In a memo addressed to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin and dated July 23, 2025, it reads, “Speaker, I respectfully write to formally withdraw from the reconstituted list of Ghana’s delegation to the Pan-African Parliament as an Observer as adopted by the House in a resolution on Tuesday, 22nd July, 2025, as evidenced in the copy of the attached votes and proceedings of Tuesday 22nd July, 2025.

“Mr Speaker, my checks with the Pan-African Parliament Secretariat indicates that Observers are not permitted to participate in plenary sitting or committee meeting. Observers are only permitted to attend upon meeting.”

Patrick Boamah’s decision follows Parliament’s reconstitution of the delegation to the Pan-African Parliament after adopting a resolution on July 22, 2025.

He further contended that his inclusion in the delegation is a right, based on the established formula for committees and delegations, which entitles the Minority Caucus to two representatives.

“Mr Speaker, under the established formula for committees and delegations, my inclusion is by right, as the Minority Caucus is entitled to two representatives. The 68:32 ratio-which guided the allocation of committee memberships-was equally applied in constituting the ECOWAS Parliament delegation,” he argued.

Boamah added that his decision to withdraw as an observer is “to avoid any potential embarrassment to the Parliament of Ghana and Ghanaians as a whole.”

The newly-reconstituted delegation to the Pan-African Parliament is led by First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor; with Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, Collins Dauda, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, and Frank Annoh-Dompreh serving as members, while Patrick Boamah has been designated as an observer.

‘I’ve never had confidence in the Auditor-General’s system’

0

Isaac Adongo is the MP for Bolga Central Isaac Adongo is the MP for Bolga Central

The Member of Parliament for Bolga Central, Isaac Adongo, has declared his lack of confidence in the system used by the Auditor-General in auditing government accounts.

According to him, the current audit system does not offer assurance that discrepancies will be addressed.

He noted that, instead, the Auditor-General’s system pretends to be working.

Adongo said if the system does not prosecute persons found guilty of wrongdoing, it is fundamentally flawed.

His comments come on the back of the recent Auditor-General’s Report on government accounts.

The report showed overstatements and understatements of the government’s finances alongside various leakages in the public sector, amounting to over GH¢17.4 billion.

“I’ve never had confidence in the kind of system we are operating. We are basically pretending to be exercising assurance, but the system that we are operating itself doesn’t lend itself to proper assurance,” Adongo was quoted by myjoyonline.com to have said.

He bemoaned the inability of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament to prosecute culprits, calling them toothless.

“The Parliament of Ghana is toothless when the auditor reports to it and simply engages in talk shows without prosecutorial powers. They don’t have those powers, and Parliament is the employer of the auditor. So, yes, there’s independence of the auditor away from the executive, but to what end? That is where the problem is,” he added.

Adongo also noted that the audit goes through a process where irregularities are flagged by auditors, then agencies are given opportunities to explain.

They are also given an “exit conference” and a formal “management letter” indicating unresolved issues.

The Bolga MP noted that the process only leads to mere directives to “go and implement these recommendations so that you don’t see any more. You go and you go and sleep”.

He added that the internal auditors are often HND holders, who are expected to police sophisticated financial controllers, lawyers, and engineers, often in situations where they are poorly remunerated.

“At the end of the day, they are not able to do anything. The following year, it is repeated on a large scale,” he said.

We May Drag Ashanti Regional Minister To Parliament Over Recent Killings In Kumasi- Collins Adomako

0

According to report from Channellnews, Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has revealed that the Ashanti Parliamentary caucus is planning to summon the Ashanti Regional Minister to Parliament following the increasing cases of violence in the region.

The MP expressed worry over recent killings, including the death of a Kusasi Chief and three others.

One of the victims was Peggy Ayelbassah, a young woman who was on her way to Salaga for a nursing school admission interview but was tragically shot dead.

In a Facebook post, Mr Adomako-Mensah said Peggy had contacted him just a day before her sad passing, making the news more painful for him personally.

Speaking in an interview with Channel One Newsroom, he described the situation as “deeply troubling” and called for urgent and proper security measures to protect lives and bring peace to the area.

The MP also mentioned that the caucus is considering direct talks with the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, who is also from the Ashanti Region.

The aim is to understand how the government is responding to the growing insecurity.

“We intend to trigger some parliamentary processes for the Minister to come to Parliament to brief the House on the happenings in the Ashanti Region,” he said.

According to him, members of the caucus have already started discussions on the matter and may even meet the Interior Minister personally to hear from him before deciding on the next step.

He stressed that the killings must stop and the safety of innocent citizens must be given top priority by security agencies.

Mahama’s appointment of Kojo Choi a diplomatic masterstroke

Ghana is in mourning following the death of celebrated highlife musician Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, who passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital in Accra after a short illness. He was 60 years old.

The announcement of his death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from political leaders, musicians, fans, and cultural institutions across the country, all paying homage to a man widely regarded as one of Ghana’s greatest musical icons.

President John Dramani Mahama in a statement on Facebook led the national tributes: “Lumba’s unmatched musical genius provided the soundtrack to our lives, carrying us through various phases of life. The beats to his memorable songs may have died down, but his enduring legacy will echo through the ages.” He added, “On behalf of the Government of Ghana, I extend heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones for this irreplaceable loss.”

Former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia also paid tribute, hailing Daddy Lumba as “a pillar in Ghana’s highlife genre” whose works “inspired and uplifted many of us.” He noted that Lumba’s passing is “a huge blow, not only to the music fraternity but to the entire country.”

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo described Daddy Lumba as “a pantheon among musical greats of all-time” and a dear friend. “His hit-making songs will remain lasting contributions to my presidential journey and will forever be etched in the annals of political campaigns of the New Patriotic Party,” he said, referencing the singer’s role in the NPP’s campaign music from 2008 to 2016. “May he peacefully rest in the Bosom of the Almighty until the Last Day of the Resurrection, when we shall all meet again.”

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in an official statement expressed its sorrow, describing Daddy Lumba as “an iconic music legend” whose work served as “a symbol of cultural pride.” The statement, signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, emphasised the emotional and political impact of his famous campaign anthem “Nana Ye Winner,” noting that “its power and inspiration were acknowledged even by our political opponents.”

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament and Presidential Spokesperson, praised Lumba’s poetic range: “He sang of pain, he sang of love, he sang of hope, he sang of triumph… and then he sang of the inevitability of death.” He added, “Today, his life’s journey has come to an unexpected end and his unmistakable voice has gone silent, never to be forgotten.”

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, a former Minister for Energy, echoed the nation’s sentiments: “A better part of us is left void with the passing of an icon… your legacy will live on in every melody and in every memory.”

Musicians, including Kofi Kinaata, M.anifest, and Kweku Flick, also took to social media to honour the man whose music defined generations. Lumba, known for his powerful voice and emotional depth, released over 30 albums and mentored countless artists.

A statement from the Fosu family, signed by counsel Fati Ali Yallah, confirmed his passing and requested privacy during this period of mourning. “Daddy Lumba was more than a musician; he was a cultural icon whose music touched countless lives,” it read. “His soulful voice provided the soundtrack to our love stories, and his poignant lyrics captured the poetry of our struggles, dreams, and resilience.”

Born on September 29, 1964, in Nsuta near Mampong in the Ashanti Region, Daddy Lumba began his musical career at Juaben Secondary School before moving to Germany, where he met fellow musician Nana Acheampong. The duo, known as the Lumba Brothers, ushered in a new era of highlife music with hits such as “Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu.”

As news of his death spread, fans gathered at his East Legon residence to pay their respects. Funeral arrangements, according to the family, will be announced in the coming days.

Daddy Lumba’s legacy as a storyteller, musical pioneer, and national treasure is firmly cemented in Ghana’s cultural history.

Nana Akua Dokyiwaa Karikari, an upper-primary pupil at Mary Mother of Good Counsel School and member of the Captain Planet Foundation’s Planeteer Alliance, will host Ghana’s first Wind Summit on July 26, 2025.

The event, organized at her Accra school, aims to educate peers on plastic waste management and environmental protection.

Karikari expressed confidence in leading the summit, citing training from the foundation’s 2024 plastic policy workshop and an ongoing six-month boot camp. She emphasized motivating youth to adopt sustainable habits: “I want children to understand why throwing plastics everywhere is harmful and learn to repurpose them into useful items.”

The Captain Planet Foundation, a nonprofit inspired by a 1990s environmental cartoon, focuses on youth-led ecological initiatives globally. The summit will cap attendance at 50 participants, featuring practical sessions on upcycling plastics into products like bags and pencil cases. Karikari highlighted broader goals: “Preventing plastic from polluting streets, drains, and oceans requires collective action.”

The foundation’s legacy of empowering young environmental leaders aligns with Ghana’s sustainability efforts. Registrations for the summit are open via the Planeteer Alliance platform.

Ghana Urged to Prioritize Transparency in Lithium Deal Renegotiation

Ewoyaa Lithium ProjectEwoyaa Lithium Project
Ewoyaa Lithium Project

Policy think tank IMANI Africa has called for rigorous transparency as Ghana renegotiates terms for the Ewoyaa Lithium Project with Australian firm Atlantic Lithium.

The company seeks to halve its royalty rate from 10% to 5%, citing global price pressures, despite not fulfilling original commitments under its 2024 mining lease.

IMANI’s Criticality Analysis highlights the absence of a publicly available Green Minerals Policy to govern strategic resources like lithium. This gap denies communities, experts, and Parliament essential context for evaluating revised terms. The group warns that approving concessions without transparency risks repeating Ghana’s history of extractive deals yielding limited local benefits.

Four imperatives dominate IMANI’s recommendations: immediately publishing the Green Minerals Policy to establish binding standards; disclosing all renegotiation terms for public scrutiny; independently verifying Atlantic Lithium’s project feasibility and delivery; and avoiding precedents allowing investors to dilute obligations pre-performance. The analysis stresses that secretive negotiations undermine national interest.

The lithium project represents a pivotal opportunity for Ghana’s industrial future under President Mahama’s administration. IMANI contends that political courage not expediency will determine whether Ghanaians gain sustainable value or face another raw-resource disappointment. The renegotiation outcome may signal Ghana’s commitment to accountable resource governance amid global green energy competition.

NAIMOS raids galamsey site, seizes trucks, bulldozer and tires

0

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operation Secretariat (NAIMOS) Task Force has seized a cache of equipment and materials used in illegal mining activities during an operation in the Bole/Bamboi area of the Savannah Region.

The latest crackdown, carried out on July 25, 2025, comes as part of NAIMOS’ intensified efforts to clamp down on galamsey operations across the country, following the arrest of 11 Chinese nationals at the same site a day earlier, underscoring the Task Force’s determination to dismantle illegal mining networks.

A statement confirming the seizure was shared via social media by government spokesperson, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, on Sunday, July 27.

According to NAIMOS officials, the Task Force confiscated several vehicles and items believed to be used in illegal mining operations.

These include

Vehicles: 4 Shacman tipper trucks (GT 7048-25, GT 7035-25, GT 7265-25, GT 7243-25)

1 bulldozer (GT 5321-25)

1 low bed (GT 1128-21)

1 Forland small truck

– Other Items:
– 10 drums of engine oil
– 28 assorted Richlion tires
– Motorbikes

All confiscated equipment and items have been transported to the NAIMOS headquarters in Accra by hired drivers, where they are being held pending further investigations and directives.

The Task Force has reiterated its commitment to continuing similar operations in the Bole/Bamboi enclave and beyond, aimed at halting the degradation of Ghana’s environment and natural resources caused by illegal mining.
NAIMOS maintains that these ongoing exercises are crucial to safeguarding the country’s water bodies, forest reserves, and farmlands from further destruction by unlawful mining activities.

Ghanaian music legend Daddy Lumba brought together former President John Agyekum Kufuor and his predecessor, the late Jerry John Rawlings, at the maiden Legends and Legacy Ball in 2011.

Amid lingering rumours of tension between the two former heads of state, they found common ground when Daddy Lumba called out their names and dedicated a song to them during his performance.

In a rare moment of unity, both men rose to their feet and danced the night away.

The event, organised by Imajin Advertising, was held to honour Daddy Lumba for his remarkable contributions to the music industry.

Economist Urges Rigorous Selection for Ghana Bond Market Revival

Dr. Daniel Amateye Anim, Chief Economist at PIED Africa, has called for stringent credibility assessments in appointing bookrunners for Ghana’s domestic bond market reopening.

He emphasized that restoring investor trust requires institutions with proven governance and integrity, cautioning against selecting firms with histories of mismanagement.

The Ministry of Finance reportedly seeks new bookrunners after previous mandates lapsed amid Ghana’s debt restructuring. Dr. Anim stressed that institutions handling public funds must command market confidence: “Any misstep could derail issuances and undermine fiscal recovery.” His warning follows Ghana’s efforts to revive its bond market after months of IMF-backed debt restructuring.

Dr. Anim framed the selection as a critical test of the Mahama administration’s commitment to transparency. He urged prioritizing technical capability over political considerations, noting credible bookrunners would attract renewed investor interest and support Ghana’s broader economic stabilization goals. The domestic bond market remains vital for financing government operations under ongoing fiscal consolidation.

Arsenal complete signing of Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting CP

Viktor Gyökeres (L) has signed for Arsenal Viktor Gyökeres (L) has signed for Arsenal

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Swedish striker, Viktor Gyökeres, from Portuguese champions, Sporting CP, making him their sixth acquisition of the summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old arrives at the Emirates Stadium after a remarkable 2024/25 campaign in Portugal, where he netted an astonishing 54 goals in 52 matches across all competitions.

Gyökeres dominated the Primeira Liga for the second straight season, finishing as top scorer with 39 league goals as Sporting clinched back-to-back titles.

His move to North London follows Arsenal’s earlier signings of Cristhian Mosquera, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Nørgaard, and Noni Madueke, forming a bold and ambitious recruitment drive as the Gunners look to end a two-decade wait for the Premier League crown.

In his first interview as an Arsenal player, Gyökeres reflected on his journey and excitement for the challenge ahead:

“I started here [in England], it feels like a long time ago. I think I’ve improved a lot since then. Now, I want to prove myself for real and perform together with the team.

“When I played at Sporting, I scored a few goals in the Champions League so I feel that I can be on that level as well. Now, to come here to a club on Arsenal’s level, I think it’s going to help me perform even better with all the amazing players in this team,” he said.

Gyökeres will wear the iconic No 14 shirt, previously worn by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, the club’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League with 175 goals and a two-time Premier League winner.

It’s a shirt heavy with expectation, and fans will hope the Swede can channel that legacy as Arsenal push to go one better than their three consecutive second-place finishes.

Mikel Arteta believes the striker has the tools to make a major impact at the Emirates:

“Viktor has so many qualities. He is a quick and powerful presence up front, with incredible goalscoring numbers at club and international levels. He brings a clinical edge with a high conversion rate of chances into goals, with his intelligent movement in the box making him a constant threat,” the Arsenal manager told the club’s website.

With Gyökeres now in their ranks, Arsenal hope they’ve finally found the striker who can lead them back to Premier League glory for the first time since their legendary Invincibles campaign in 2003/04.

Empress Gifty Apologizes on Behalf of Despite Media Over Bullgod’s Jesus Comment

0

Weeks after public backlash over comments made by artiste manager Bullgod on United Showbiz, the show’s host, Empress Gifty, has finally addressed the matter with a formal apology.

Opening the Saturday, July 26 edition of the program, Empress Gifty issued an unreserved apology on behalf of Despite Media and the entire United Showbiz team for the offensive remarks directed at Jesus Christ during a previous broadcast. Bullgod, during his appearance on the show earlier this month, had described Jesus as “a fool,” citing Proverbs 29:11 in an attempt to justify his claim. The comment quickly went viral, sparking outrage among Christians and the broader public.

In her statement, Empress Gifty acknowledged the pain and disappointment the remark caused, particularly within Ghana’s Christian community.

“We take full responsibility for what happened. As the host of this show and on behalf of Despite Media, I sincerely apologise to all viewers and the Christian community for the discomfort and offence caused,” she said.

She went on to emphasise that United Showbiz values the beliefs of all faiths and does not condone any form of disrespect toward religious figures or institutions.

The apology has been met with mixed reactions—while many have accepted it as a necessary step, others believe the show should have responded much earlier. So far, Bullgod himself has not retracted or apologised for his comments, leaving some viewers still unsettled.

As the conversation continues, one thing remains clear: public platforms have a duty to balance freedom of expression with respect for deeply held beliefs.

How CAN a child be publicly humiliated for wearing a Union Jack?

0

The airwaves are full of ministers and ex-ministers claiming that they take full responsibility for the £7 Billion Afghan farce. How nice. How proper. How reassuring. But in what way do they do so?

Will Afghan families come and live in their houses, or even next door? Will their Parliamentary and ministerial salaries and pensions be docked to help pay the bill? Not blinking likely.

Will they, like the disgraced War minister John Profumo, in 1963, go off and busy themselves with charitable works until the end of their days? You must be joking.

‘Taking responsibility’, in modern British politics, means an uncomfortable few minutes in Parliament and maybe a moderately tough interrogation on Channel 4 News. If they are former Cabinet ministers, they can then hide in comfortable obscurity. If they are prime ministers, they can go on to become extremely rich.

His Majesty’s government opened the nation’s gates to thousands of Afghans because they idiotically exposed them to danger. They did this after using them in a wholly futile war, which we should never have taken part in.

As if they were fornicating rock stars trying to keep their dalliances secret, HMG used our money to obtain a super-injunction to prevent this newspaper from reporting what they had done. They spent our money, to keep us in the dark.

This was a vast official lie – an enormous government pretence that things had not happened which had.

Taliban fighters pose for a photograph in Kabul, Afghanistan

As so often in this country, secrecy was not deployed to keep information from our enemies (the Taliban already knew most of what was hidden). It was enforced to keep truth from the British people, who must pay for it and endure its enormous consequences for many years to come.

A stupid mistake was made to disappear, by improper use of the courts and outrageous, wrongful use of money extorted by the tax authorities from you and me, under the threat of imprisonment if we do not pay. I repeat, we paid so that our government could hide from us just how much we were paying.

We pay heavily and endlessly for the lies of others. Then they lie again so we don’t know this has happened. And they erect, in secret, a terrifying legal threat to ensure that nobody talks.

No doubt we’ll all be doing our tax self-assessment with extra enthusiasm this year, in tribute to this insulting ingenuity.

If we did not still have free media in this country – and they are alas much less free than they were 50 years ago – this would just have happened in silence, forever.

Why did they do it? On Tuesday, Parliament’s longest-serving MP, the Tory Sir Edward Leigh, said: ‘Part of the original sin was our intervening militarily and then scuttling out.’

He then asked the defence secretary, John Healey, a clever question: ‘On a wider point, may I take it that we have learnt our lesson and have got over the liberal imperial itch of the Cameron and Blair eras to intervene militarily in ungovernable countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and Libya?’

Mr Healey somehow slid past that question in his response to Sir Edward. No wonder. They have not got over it at all.

The government, and much of the Tory Party, still itch to drag us deeper into the Ukraine war and, if possible, into Iran’s conflict with Israel as well.

I am pretty sure that there are senior figures in politics, the military and the civil service now planning to entangle us in a shooting war against China over Taiwan.

For the ‘liberal imperial itch’ continues to plague a large part of our ruling class, and the only way they have found to soothe it is to apply large quantities of high explosives.

If you want a lasting lesson from this episode, then here it is.

Britain should stop trying to be Great and jingoistic abroad, and should instead concentrate on being Good and truly patriotic at home.

Stop making craters in other countries. Fix the potholes in our own country.

We ceaselessly make ourselves unhappy, poor – and increasingly less British – by Leftist warmongering, usually carried out from Uncle Sam’s jacket pocket because we can’t get out there on our own.

We do this in the name of patriotism. The valorous ghosts of the Second World War glory are summoned up by people such as Sir Anthony Blair and Lord Cameron. But are they as patriotic in practice as they like to claim?

The more we go to war, the more politically correct we become.

Despite repeated campaigns to inculcate ‘British values’, actual Britishness shrinks daily under an unending state-sponsored assault of Equality, Diversity and Multiculturalism.

Our previous culture, education, laws, religion and behaviour – which 60 years ago were conservative and patriotic – must all be diluted or altered or even made shameful.

This is done in the name of tolerance. But we don’t get tolerance. We get a new intolerance, beautifully summed up this week by the treatment of poor Courtney Wright, aged 12.

On Tuesday, Parliament’s longest-serving MP, the Tory Sir Edward Leigh, said: ‘Part of the original sin was our intervening militarily and then scuttling out’

She thought it would be a good idea to wear a Union Jack dress to her school’s ‘culture day’ dedicated to ‘recognising and celebrating the rich cultural diversity within our school community’. Not hers, though.

She was removed from the proceedings and was not allowed to deliver her speech, which was intended to celebrate those British values of fairness and politeness.

Everyone is apologising now because, once again, the free media have revealed what happened. But that’s only public relations. Her removal was the real policy.

So untie this knot. Why is it that, while a child can be publicly humiliated for wearing our national flag to a state school, we still go to war as if we were Edwardian Britain, with the crowds cheering the troops.

Why do those troops fight abroad under the flag that’s denounced at home? Sir Edward is right. This policy is liberal first and imperial a bad second.

So why do conservative patriots keep supporting such wars?

These adventures we take part in nowadays are Left-wing. They are supposedly aimed at helping ‘democracy’ take root in the Sahara or the Syrian or Iraqi deserts, or in the desolate mountains of Afghanistan. It never does.

All these expeditions have failed because they were bound to. For they were aimed at forcing other people to change the way they lived, just as much as our long-ago colonial expeditions were.

Perhaps the stupidest of all was the attempt to persuade Afghans to live according to the ideas of Hillary Clinton and Lady Cherie Blair. Imagine the response if the Taliban tried to impose the burqa on Essex.

There was also an attempt to force Afghans to give up growing opium (which Britain grows legally on the slopes of the Chilterns) and instead cultivate mint.

Who did we think we were? We were entirely off our heads. And it was this wild fantasy that led straight to this week’s wild scandal.

There are plenty of medium-sized nations, which were once empires, such as Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria and Spain, that have now grown out of fantasies that they are still great powers.

And there are those, such as Australia, which never tried to be great powers at all, but just sought to rule themselves. They live happier, more prosperous and more harmonious lives than we do, and I suspect they do not regret it. Why not copy them?

Bawku SHS Student Shot Dead on Campus

News Hub Creator1h

A final-year student of Bawku Senior High School was tragically shot and killed on campus on the evening of Saturday, July 26, in what appears to be an ethnically motivated attack.

The victim, identified as Hakim Kundima, a third-year General Arts student, was reportedly targeted around 8:00 p.m. by armed assailants believed to be from the Kusasi ethnic group.

According to Bawku-based Gumah FM, the attackers scaled the school wall and stormed the dormitory, forcibly removing Hakim before shooting him within the school compound.

The motive behind the killing remains unclear, but the incident has heightened tensions in the already volatile Bawku area, which has seen intermittent ethnic clashes in recent years.

Hakim’s body has since been deposited at the Presbyterian Hospital morgue in Bawku for autopsy and further investigations.

The Ghana Police Service is yet to issue an official statement on the matter, but security has reportedly been reinforced in and around the school to prevent further violence.

The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the school community, prompting calls from students, parents, and local leaders for swift justice and stronger security measures to protect lives on campus.

Parliament of Ghana Now Approves Visa Waivers with Mozambique, São Tomé, Colombia, and Dominica to Strengthen its International Ties and New Boost to Socio-Economic Growth

0

Sunday, July 27, 2025

Parliament has in the last few weeks ratified visa waiver agreements with Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, Colombia and the Commonwealth of Dominica. Per these agreements, citizens with diplomatic, service and ordinary passports of these countries may travel to Ghana without visas. The strategy seeks to step up international cooperation, promote mobility and induce closer relations in such vital sectors as tourism, education, trade, energy and agriculture.

The Vision Of The Visa Waivers

These visa waivers, PM Express gathered, are some of the proactive measures taken by Ghana to promote international relations and make room for more international cooperation. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, Chairman of Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Committee, emphasized the significance of these agreements in reinforcing multilateral ties. The agreements are designed to make traveling between Ghana and those countries less cumbersome and to encourage business, educational, cultural and tourism exchanges so as to deepen economic cooperation and increase diplomatic relations.

4 Ghana’s Turn to these EpAct countries – Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, Colombia and Dominica The targeted focus on these EpAct countries by Ghana is strategic maneuvering to increase the diversity of its international partners by plunging itself in regions and sectors with relative congruity of interests. The waivers are likely to be good for a more dynamic, connected relationship with those countries and for broader African, Caribbean and Latin American diplomatic engagement.

Enhancing Tourism and Trade Links

Perhaps the immediate payoff of the visa waivers would be the surge in tourism between Ghana and the four countries. Similarly, greater accessibility to Ghana will also make the country more accessible to a growing number of visitors, be they tourists, business day-trippers, or academics. Ghana’s deep cultural heritage, historic landmarks and thriving tourism industry have plenty to benefit from hordes of tourists coming in, especially from regions that might not have been large generators of tourists before.

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said that the visa waiver would not pay an instant toll on government. Visa fees are generally a revenue-generator, but the long-term light of tourism and trade gains will far outshine any short-term loss. The rapid expansion of tourism will provide multiple income earning opportunities including accommodation, transport, retail and local craftsmen. Furthermore, as the nation prospers from international tourist traffic, it will become a center of cultural and economic exchanges for the region.

Expanding Educational and Agricultural Cooperation

Apart from boosting tourism and trade, the visa waivers could enhance educational links. The easier access will enable students, teachers, researchers to travel between Ghana and these countries to seek academic exchanges, engage in collaborative projects, and educational studies. Ghana’s universities, research institutions and educational networks would benefit significantly from the increased sharing of information with institutions in Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, Colombia and Dominica, including sharing on common problems such as agriculture, environmental sustainability and health care.

The agriculture industry offers another example of how visa reductions can spur expansion. Ghana has been making good progress in improving agriculture for a more modern and sustainable farming. Partnerships with Mozambique, Colombia and São Tomé & Príncipe, which share similar agricultural landscapes and issues, had potential for useful information transfer. And this, in turn, could open doors to better crop growing, more efficient irrigation and crop exportation.

Energy and Public Works: Opportunities to Improve our Nation’s Infrastructure

Another promising field of cooperation is energy. Ghana, with such an emerging energy sector especially in renewables, stands to forge partnerships with these countries to make use of the energy to the benefit of the growing region and also to position itself as a vanguard of green energy alternatives in Africa.

Moreover, Ghana’s expanding infrastructure such as its ports, transport links and manufacturing industry, can act as significant platforms for increasing Ghana’s trade and investment with Colombia and Dominica both of which have experience in port management, infrastructure construction and manufacturing.

Ghanaians Stronger In The World.

Minister Okudzeto Ablakwa reiterated that the visa exemptions are integral to Ghana’s ongoing commitment to integration with the international community. Diplomatic developments Ghana has developed increasingly close bilateral ties across Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Conclusion: The Long View Of Growth

Finally, it must be noted that Ghana’s visa waiver arrangement with Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, Colombia, and the Commonwealth of Dominica is a forward-looking action that poses to be a game changer in the global connectivity of the country. The direct impact may not be felt in terms of loss of revenue, however the long term social-economic development, enhanced international relations and improved bi-lateral co-operation, would ensure that Ghana has a more dynamic and prosperous future. As a result of enhanced access, tourism, trade, agriculture, energy and education throughout the region will flourish through this transformation that ensures Ghana’s trajectory of growth at the regional and global level.

TM Entertainmentz, management of iconic highlife musician Daddy Lumba, announced the cancellation of his highly anticipated USA and Canada tour on July 26, 2025.

The decision follows the singer’s death earlier that day, ending plans for his historic return to North American stages after 25 years. A statement from the group described “heavy hearts and deep sorrow,” confirming all tour activities were halted immediately.

The management confirmed the passing of Charles Kwadwo Fosu, globally celebrated as Daddy Lumba, calling it “devastating news” leaving “an irreplaceable void.” TM Entertainmentz emphasized the tour aimed to honor his lifetime of timeless music and legacy. Instead, they now shift focus to commemorating his spirit. The statement extended condolences to the Fosu family and urged fans to respect their privacy during this period of grief.

Former President Nana Akufo-Addo, opposition leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), publicly mourned the loss on social media, describing Daddy Lumba as “my dear friend” and “a pantheon among musical greats.” Akufo-Addo acknowledged the artist’s special connection with Ghanaians and noted his songs’ lasting impact on political campaigns. TM Entertainmentz concluded by affirming the late singer’s music “will live forever,” reflecting his indelible mark on Ghanaian culture.

Correspondence from the Northern Region

The Paramount Chief of the Gulkpegu Traditional Area (Tamale), Naa Yab Gukpe-Naa, has cautioned Mamprusi and Kusaasi troublemakers in the Tamale Metropolis to abort any plans of attacking each other.

According to Choggu Naa Mahamadu, who spoke on behalf of the Gulkpe-Naa, traditional authorities in the metropolis will not countenance any violent confrontation between the two tribes in Tamale and Dagbon at large, saying that once they are in Tamale, they must see themselves as brothers and not enemies.

Speaking to the media in Tamale on Saturday, Naa Yab Choggu Naa warned that anyone who sparks any violence between the two feuding factions in Tamale would not only be dealt with but would have their properties confiscated by traditional authorities.

“The misunderstanding is in Bawku and must therefore not be settled in Tamale or Dagbon. Dagbon is peace-loving and we do not welcome any such attempts” he said.

The chief’s warning comes after reports of a botched attempt to attack a Kusaasi man in Tamale Friday night.

Last week, there was a spillover of the Bawku conflict in the Ashanti Region where a Kusaasi chief and at least two others were brutally murdered by unknown gunmen at different times but in similar hit and run fashion.

This has compelled the Ashanti Regional Security Council to institute a number of measures to curtail further escalation, including a ban on motorbike riding after 7pm.

Making reference to the spillover in the Ashanti Region, Choggu Naa Mahamadu said traditional authorities in Tamale were monitoring the situation and would continue to work with security agencies to ensure the conflict is not imported into the Northern Regional capital.

Man to embark on one-man-demo for government to approve E&P takeover of Azumah Resources

A private Ghanaian citizen, Patrick Kwame Awoin, has announced his intention to stage a one-man peaceful demonstration in response to the acquisition agreement between Azumah Resources Ghana Limited and Engineers and Planners concerning the Black Volta Gold Project.

“I write to formally notify your esteemed office, pursuant to Article 21(1)(d) of the Constitution, 1992 of the Republic of Ghana, of the intention of Kwame Awoin, a Ghanaian citizen and native of Esiama in the Nzema district of the Western North Region, to embark on a peaceful one-man demonstration,” the letter read.

Dated July 15, 2025, and addressed to the Office of the President and the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Awoin, the native of the Upper West Region outlined his reasons, stating that several foreign companies in the mining sector have long exploited the region without initiating any developmental projects to benefit the locals.

He believes, however, that the acquisition by Engineers and Planners (E&P), a Ghanaian-owned company will be beneficial to both the country and the region by bringing real development and creating jobs for the local population.

Awoin added that his demonstration aims to highlight the need for government approval of the takeover, in support of Engineers and Planners.

“The demonstration seeks to draw national attention to the critical importance of sanctioning the proposed acquisition of Azumah Resources Ghana Limited by Engineers and Planners (E&P). As a native of a region historically burdened by decades of mining activities by expatriate firms, with little to no developmental or employment benefits for local communities, Awoin considers the ongoing discussions and near-conclusion of this deal to be an issue of national importance and urgency,” portions of his statement read.

It added; “Further, the demonstration serves as a call to all well-meaning Ghanaians, media houses, analysts, and public commentators, including notable voices such as Bright Simons of IMANI Center for Policy & Education, to uphold the tenets of responsible and patriotic discourse. Commentary or reportage that casts unjustified aspersions on Mr. Ibrahim Mahama of E&P or seeks to derail this potential game- changing acquisition undermines not only indigenous enterprise but the economic prospects of Ghana as a whole.”

The demonstration, which Awoin has scheduled for Monday, August 4, 2025, will begin at the main Mallam Junction overpass and conclude with the presentation of his petition to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Office of the President at Jubilee House.

Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh Demands Answers from Interior Minister

0

Amid growing public anxiety over a disturbing wave of killings across the country, Minority Chief Whip, Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has demanded urgent answers and accountability from the Minister for the Interior. The lawmaker is calling for swift action and transparency in addressing what he described as a “national security emergency that can no longer be ignored.”

Rising reports of violent murders in various parts of Ghana have left communities shaken and security agencies scrambling for answers. From mysterious deaths in Accra and Kumasi to recent gruesome discoveries in parts of the Eastern and Northern Regions, the climate of fear has reached alarming levels. In Parliament on Thursday, Hon. Annoh-Dompreh expressed grave concern over the seeming inertia from the security apparatus.

“We are not at war, yet our citizens are dying in cold blood almost daily,” he said. “This is not a time for silence or political diplomacy. We need answers, and we need them now.”

Annoh-Dompreh questioned the effectiveness of recent security strategies and demanded an immediate briefing from the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Henry Quartey. According to him, the killings suggest an underlying breakdown in law enforcement and intelligence coordination.

“There is no justification for Ghanaians to go to bed with one eye open, wondering if they will see another day,” the Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP asserted. “If the Interior Minister and the IGP cannot reassure the public with tangible actions, then perhaps we need a reassessment of leadership in our security sector.”

The Minority Chief Whip also called for a bipartisan emergency committee to investigate the recent murders, urging the Ghana Police Service to increase visibility in crime-prone communities. He emphasized the importance of real-time updates from law enforcement and called for collaboration with community leaders and vigilante groups—within the law—to assist in intelligence gathering.

Several high-profile murders, including that of a young nurse in Bole, a businesswoman in Takoradi, and the recent killing of a chief in the Ashanti Region, have sparked outrage on social media and raised questions about the state’s capacity to protect its citizens.

Meanwhile, civil society organizations and human rights groups have also lent their voices to the calls for government intervention, urging a national dialogue on security reforms.

As tensions mount, all eyes are now on the Interior Minister to respond decisively to the Minority’s concerns and present a clear, actionable roadmap to curb the deadly trend gripping the nation.

First Mpox death recorded in Ghana; 23 new cases confirmed

0

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed 23 new cases of Mpox, pushing the country’s total case count to 257 as of July 22, 2025. One death has also been reported, the first since the outbreak began.

This marks the highest weekly increase in recent updates and a turning point in the outbreak, which had previously recorded no fatalities.

According to health officials, the virus continues to spread mainly through close physical contact with infected individuals.

The GHS is urging the public to be vigilant and to report any symptoms early to help curb the spread.

A previous update issued on July 18 had placed the number of cases at 234, with no deaths and no active hospitalisations.

The jump of 23 new cases and one death in just a few days represents a sharp change in the disease’s progression in Ghana.

Mpox, previously known as Monkeypox, is a viral infection that causes fever, body aches, and distinctive skin rashes. It spreads through direct contact with the skin, rashes, or body fluids of an infected person.

The disease is especially dangerous for children, pregnant women, and those with pre-existing health conditions.

Health authorities are advising the public to avoid close physical contact with anyone showing symptoms, wash hands regularly, and seek medical help immediately if symptoms appear.

“Protect yourself and others by avoiding close contact with those showing symptoms, and ensure you report any suspected signs to the nearest health facility,” the GHS said in a public notice.

Although most infected persons recover without complications, the new fatality has raised concerns among health professionals.

Officials say early detection and isolation remain the most effective ways to control the outbreak.

The GHS says it is monitoring the situation closely and working with regional health directorates to trace contacts and coordinate the public health response.

As part of its response, the health service is stepping up public education and has reminded the public to rely on verified information sources and support national efforts to contain the virus.

New GRDA board inaugurated to revamp railway system nationwide

0

Mr. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, minister of transport, has tasked the new Ghana Railway Development Authority Board to revitalise the country’s ailing railway sector.

Speaking at the Board’s swearing-in ceremony in Accra on Friday, he lamented the deterioration of the country’s rail network, attributing the decline to obsolete infrastructure, inadequate maintenance, limited human resource capacity, and insufficient funding.

“Railway operations are currently at unacceptable levels due to the poor nature of the railway tracks across the entire 947km narrow gauge network,” he said.

Mr. Nikpe, charged the 11-member Board, chaired by Mr. Aburi-Yinga Anamoo, to deliver a functional and inclusive railway system.

Members include Dr Frederick Appoh, Mr. George Lomotey, Mr. George Debrah, Mr. Komla Wogbemase, Dr Audrey Smock Amoah, Mr. Kwame Kwakye, Dr James Kofi Kutsoati, Madam Nafisatu Iddrisu, and Mr. Tanko Mohammed. A representative from the Ministry of Finance is expected to join later.

Mr. Nikpe stressed the government’s commitment to transforming the sector, saying: “The revamping of our railway system is not just about laying tracks. It is about laying the foundations for industrial growth, improving logistics and trade, connecting communities, and creating sustainable jobs.”

He emphasised the Board’s role in ensuring regulatory oversight, strategic direction and mobilisation of private sector investment to support the sector’s revival.

“It is my expectation that this new board will work tirelessly in support of achieving the aspirations of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to revamp Ghana’s ailing railway infrastructure in partnership with the private sector,” he charged.

“I trust that with professionalism, integrity, and a shared commitment to excellence, you will steer the GRDA toward delivering a railway system that truly works for Ghanaians,” Mr. Nikpe said.

He cautioned Board members against assuming management roles, urging them to stick strictly to their mandate.

Mr. Anamoo described the absence of active rail systems to complement road, air and water transport as a national “disaster” needing urgent intervention.

“We have cement, we have fuel, we have all sorts of things, clinker, being discharged from the harbour and transported by road all the way to Asante region. So, no matter the amount of money you’re going to spend in developing these roads, they will not last,” he said. “This is where we come in as rail.”

“We’ll rise up to the occasion and bring relief to ourselves (the country),” he assured.

Super Falcons stun Morocco with epic comeback to win 10th WAFCON title

Players of Nigeria celebrating with the trophy Players of Nigeria celebrating with the trophy

Nigeria pulled off a sensational second-half comeback to beat hosts Morocco 3-2 and claim their 10th CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title on Saturday night in Rabat.

Trailing 2-0 at the break, the Super Falcons showed their trademark resilience and quality, with goals from Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi, and a late winner from Joe Echegini turning the game on its head at the Stade Olympique.

Morocco had raced into an early lead through Ghizlane Chebbak’s fine strike in the 12th minute before Sanaâ Mssoudy doubled the advantage with a composed finish after a slick pass from Ibtissam Jraidi.

But Nigeria fought back after the hour mark when a VAR review handed them a penalty, converted by Okoronkwo. She then set up Ijamilusi for the equaliser in the 71st minute.

With the game heading for extra time, Echegini struck in the 88th minute from a well-executed set-piece, sealing a memorable comeback.

Despite Morocco’s late push, Nigeria held on for a famous win, reaffirming their dominance in African women’s football and denying the Atlas Lionesses a first-ever title on home soil.

One Election Loss and Suddenly Everyone in Government Is Corrupt? _ Oliver Barker-Vormawor Reveals

News Hub Creator2h

On Saturday, July 26, 2025, Ghanaian activist and lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor shared a thought-provoking post on Facebook. He expressed deep surprise at how quickly political party supporters can change their opinions about government corruption after losing an election.

In his post, he said he is truly amazed by how party supporters can go from saying “no one in government is corrupt” to “everyone in government is corrupt” within just two months. According to him, all it takes is one election loss for this sudden switch to happen.

He believes this kind of behavior needs to be studied. It shows how political loyalty can sometimes blind people to the truth. When their party is in power, supporters often defend every action. They refuse to accept that there could be any wrongdoing. But once they lose power, they quickly accuse the same system of being full of corruption.

Oliver’s post reflects a wider concern about how politics in Ghana and many parts of the world is becoming more about party loyalty than about honesty or good governance. Many people do not stay consistent in their values. Instead, their views change depending on whether their party is in government or in opposition.

He believes that this kind of behavior hurts democracy. It makes it difficult to hold leaders accountable when supporters are only interested in defending their side. He suggests that it is time for people to rise above blind loyalty and focus on the truth, no matter who is in power.

His post has started many conversations online. Some agree with him, while others say it’s just how politics works. Either way, Oliver’s comment is a reminder to think critically, not emotionally, about political issues.

Trassaco Land Guards Granted Bail with 800k and 2 sureties …Vie To Pay For Demolishing Building

The suspected land guards appeared again before the Adantan Circuit court on Wednesday, 23rd July 2025. The prosecution argues that all efforts to get Trassaco for statements have proven futile to proceed with the investigation.

The defence Lawyers Martin Kpebu and Kwame Tanor. Lawyer Martin Kpebu briefing the court pleaded before Her Ladyship Justice Angela Attachie the suspects, and Trasaco has almost reached an agreement with Madam Grace Durowaa to pay for the reconstruction of her demolished building.

They are pleading for the court to grant them bail to reunite with their family. Lawyer kubi further pleaded that Trassaco will have paid for the demolished building.

Her Ladyship Justice Angela Attachie granted the suspected land guards, namely bail with 800k each, with landed property and with 2 sureties. Her Ladyship further orders the defence lawyers to take Trassaco to the police station to give a statement. If he fails to do an order of arrest will be issued against him.

There was an emotional turn when lawyer Martin Kpebu approached Madam Grace Durowaa apologized to her and assured her that he ensured payment of reconstruction.

We interviewed an Adentan court official on the ongoing issue; he stressed that this is a strong warning to those individuals who act as land guards and claim to execute court orders. Any legitimate court orders are executed by court bailiffs, not land guards, police or soldiers. If the court requires security assistance, the court will seek such assistance directly. This incidence is a classic example there are no court orders. Which have exposed the land guards and Trassaco.

Authorities have vowed to follow the matter closely to ensure Justice is served.
Case was adjourned to September 2025
