I’d rather masturbate than use condoms

0

Ghanaian rapper Medikal recently opened up about his personal views on relationships, fatherhood, and some controversies surrounding his past during an episode of the popular Rants, Bants, and Confessions podcast, as monitored by MyNewsGH.

Hosted by Gisela Amponsah, Princess, and Efia Odo, the episode provided raw and unfiltered insights into the rapper’s private life.

Medikal began by discussing his stance on intimacy, candidly stating, “I like to have raw sex. If I’m with my partner, then it’s only her I can do that with. But condoms? Nah, I’d rather masturbate.”

When asked about his perspective on sharing passwords with partners, Medikal expressed his reservations.

“Oh, I’ve done that before, years ago. But now? There’s no need. You just have to trust the person. Why should I give you my password? What if you’re texting another girl? If you need to change the music in the car, I’ll do it for you,” he said, laughing at the idea.

On the topic of fatherhood, the rapper shared how his three-year-old daughter, Island, has influenced his life and decisions.

“Island is one of the greatest things that’s ever happened to me. She hasn’t been a hindrance to anything. She’s too young to know what’s going on, but I’m very personal about my family. I’ll always make sure Island and her mom are good. I won’t do anything to endanger them.”

Medikal also touched on the dynamics of co-parenting and relationships after a breakup.

“If I love you, it’s not because of a child. Nobody can trap me with a child. Relationships and marriages are different. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t mean we failed as parents.”

Chase Mahama with LGBTQ+ Bill in his office – Kokofu tells Foh Amoaning

0

Dr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu, Esq., former Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has called on Lawyer Moses Foh Amoaning to chase President John Dramani Mahama with the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the Anti-Gay Bill 2021, to sign.

According to him, the president, while in opposition, advocated for the signing of the bill, and now that he has the opportunity to sign the bill as president, he is refusing to do so.

Hence, Kokofu argued that Mahama’s recent statement, where he referred to the bill as effectively dead after failing to receive presidential assent before the end of the previous parliament, raises questions.

“Senior Lawyer Foh Amoaning, please, if you are not ready, visit the president. As an urgency of the matter, please go and visit him and ask him about the LGBTQ bill,” he said.

He added, “The Catholic Bishop told Mahama that they already know his stance on the bill, so they look forward to him signing it. Mahama was just going around the bush and saying all sorts of things.”

During a meeting with the Catholic Bishops, President Mahama explained that the bill’s failure provides an opportunity for a more inclusive conversation on the matter.

Ghana defender Mohammed Salisu features in AS Monaco’s narrow defeat at Montpellier

0

Ghana international, Mohammed Salisu Ghana international, Mohammed Salisu

Ghana international, Mohammed Salisu was in action for AS Monaco on Friday January 1 when the team suffered a 2-1 defeat to Montpellier in the French Ligue 1.7, 2025.

The strong defender started in the heart of his team’s defence as the side hoped for a win away from home to end their three-game losing streak.

Although Salisu will play the entire duration of the contest and impress with a 7-1 rating, he endured defeat with his AS Monaco teammates at full-time.

In the match, AS Monaco scored first when Lamine Camara assisted Thilo Kehrer to score after 32 minutes.

That goal separated the two teams at halftime before Montpellier rallied from behind to complete a delightful comeback victory.

It was all thanks to the heroics of Mousa Al-Tamari who netted a brace to earn the three points for the hosts.

The defeat means Mohammed Salisu and his AS Monaco side are winless in the last four matches.

The team will need to regroup and correct their mistakes in hopes of getting back to winning ways in the next outing.

US sanctions Sudan army chief Burhan over civilian deaths

0

The US government has imposed sanctions on the head of Sudan’s army and de facto president, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

He has been leading one of the two sides in the 21-month civil war that has killed tens of thousands, uprooted over 12 million and pushed the country to the brink of famine.

In a brief statement, the US treasury department accused Gen Burhan of “destabilizing Sudan and undermining the goal of a democratic transition”.

The announcement follows reports of the killing of civilians in the central city of Wad Madani in recent days, however this was not mentioned in the statement.

Sudan’s foreign ministry has dismissed the sanctions as “immoral”.

Last week, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the head of the paramilitary group fighting the army, was also sanctioned by the US.

The US accused Dagalo’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of committing genocide during the conflict.

In announcing the sanctions on Burhan on Thursday, Washington said that the army under his command “has committed lethal attacks on civilians” including targeting “schools, markets and hospitals”.

The US also alleges that the army is “responsible for the routine and intentional denial of humanitarian access, using food deprivation as a war tactic”.

The sanctions freeze any assets the Sudanese leader has in the US and also block US transactions with him.

The Treasury Department issued exemptions for humanitarian goods, but aid groups fear the army could retaliate by further blocking assistance.

During the first year of the conflict, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the army had committed war crimes.

Earlier, Gen Burhan ordered an investigation into allegations that his troops carried out widespread atrocities after recapturing the capital of Gezira state from their paramilitary rivals.

His move came after widespread concern that civilians – including foreign nationals – were killed after the seizure of Wad Madani.

Neighbouring South Sudan said on Wednesday that it had summoned Sudan’s ambassador to protest against “the loss of lives among our innocent citizens”.

Wad Madani, which is 87 miles (140km) south of the capital, Khartoum, fell to the RSF about a year ago. The military regained control of it on Saturday.

The city serves as a strategic crossroads, connecting several states through key supply highways. It is also the closest major town to Khartoum.

A Sudanese rights group accused the military of going on a rampage, killing at least 13 people in Camp Taiba, a village about 20km away.

The UN’s humanitarian chief in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, said she was deeply concerned about reports of retaliatory attacks against civilians in Gezira “based on alleged affiliation or ethnicity”.

The US special envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello called the reports “appalling” and urged the army and allied groups to investigate and hold those responsible accountable.

Gen Burhan said he had set up a committee to investigate the alleged killings in Camp Taiba, and has asked it to report back within a week.

He did not comment about the concerns raised by South Sudan, and whether the investigation would focus on alleged atrocities elsewhere in Gezira.

South Sudan’s foreign ministry said that it had received a “comprehensive report” from its embassy in Sudan “detailing the unfortunate events that have resulted in the loss of lives among our innocent citizens, who maintain a non-combatant status”.

The military has previously accused the RSF of hiring South Sudanese as “mercenaries” to fight on its side.

Social media videos of various incidents, including one showing a man in civilian clothing being thrown over a bridge and then shot at by a group of men, have been widely shared online.

BBC Verify has confirmed the video was filmed along the Hantoub bridge over the Blue Nile river.

We have matched key elements in the video including the railings and the painting on the railings as seen in the video to earlier videos filmed at the bridge.

One of the men involved in the incident, and who is carrying a Sudanese flag, is wearing clothing with a logo used by the al-Bara’a bin Malik Brigade which has been fighting alongside the Sudanese army in Khartoum and neighbouring states.

Two other videos filmed elsewhere show at least 30 bodies of men in civilian clothing laid out on a ground next to a wall.

BBC Verify has established, through matching objects seen in the video with satellite imagery, that the videos were filmed at a location north-west of Wad Madani just a few metres from where the army appears to have ambushed RSF fighters.

It is not clear how the men died and whether they were killed before the bodies were gathered there.

It is also not possible to identify them nor whether they were affiliated to any of the fighting parties, as it is common for armed fighters not to wear uniforms.

Videos of the ambush, heavy exchange of fire, and the aftermath are also circulating.

The Sudanese armed forces on Tuesday condemned what it called “individual violations” in some parts of Gezira state, and promised that those responsible would be held accountable.

The RSF was itself accused of carrying out retaliatory attacks in Gezira following the defection of their commander Abu Aqla Kaikal in October last year.

Kaikal was heavily involved in the operation that led to the army wrestling back control of Wad Madani.

No fire incident near Akosombo Dam – GNFS

0

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has called for calm following a viral social media video suggesting a major bushfire near the Akosombo Dam.

The service insists that the fire is not near the dam as reported and poses no threat to it and that there is no cause for alarm.

The service has acknowledged the situation and emphasised that its personnel are actively monitoring the fire.

“We wish to set the record straight that the fire seen in the video is absolutely nowhere near the Akosombo Dam. However, we acknowledge that the situation is still being closely monitored by our personnel, who have been put on high alert.”

However, due to the inaccessibility of the terrain, the team has been unable to reach the location to extinguish the fire.

The GNFS said it is working with local authorities and stakeholders to prevent the fire from spreading to residential or commercial areas.

To safeguard the Akosombo Dam and surrounding communities, personnel have been stationed near the dam to monitor the situation and respond promptly to any developments.

In light of the incident, the GNFS also reminded the public of the importance of bushfire prevention and the need for proactive measures to avoid such events.

The GNFS recently launched the 2024/2025 Bushfire Prevention Campaign to educate the public on effective strategies for preventing bushfires.

CCTV reveals driver stealing mobile phones from Journalists, others

0

A driver who stole mobile phones from a journalist and two others in Sakumono, Community 17, has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Kwabena Gyimah, also known as “69,” was caught on CCTV footage installed in the journalist’s home, showing him committing the theft.

Gyimah, 20, faces three counts of unlawful entry and stealing. He pleaded not guilty to the charges. His accomplice, identified as “Coded” aka IB, is currently at large.

The Court, presided over by Mr Samuel Bright Acquah, granted Gyimah bail in the amount of GH¢50,000 with three sureties. Gyimah was also ordered to report to the police weekly.

The case has been adjourned to February 4, 2025. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Benjamin Kofi Baafi did not oppose bail but requested that the bail conditions required the accused to attend court until the case was concluded. Mr Kofi Bonney, the defence counsel, also requested bail for the Gyimah.

ASP Baafi presented the facts of the case, stating that the first complainant, John Foley, a journalist; the second complainant, Andy Ababio, a banker; and the third complainant, Vida Akwei Naadude, all reside in Community 17, Sakumono.

Gyimah, who resides at Palladium, Accra Central, is accused of committing the theft. On August 5, 2025, the first complainant noticed that his iPhone 14 Pro Max, which had been beside his bed the previous night, was missing, and his window was open.

Upon reviewing CCTV footage, the complainant saw Gyimah on his property.

The first complainant reported the theft to the police at Sakumono.

The prosecution added that the first complainant posted the incident on the community WhatsApp platform, where the second complainant, Ababio, and the third complainant, Vida, confirmed that their houses had also been entered and their phones, including an iPhone 11, Samsung S22 Ultra, and Samsung A5, were stolen. They also reported the thefts to the police.

Investigations led the police to an iPhone shop at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, where the first complainant’s iPhone 14 Pro Max was recovered and retained as evidence.

On December 31, 2024, the police, acting on intelligence, arrested Gyimah at his hideout at Palladium, Accra.

He was subsequently handed over to the Sakumono police on January 3, 2025. In his caution statement, Gyimah admitted to selling all the stolen mobile phones to an individual named “Coded,” a Nigerian who is now at large. —GNA

You serve Ghana better in opposition, so be there for 32 years – Chief tells NPP

Kontihene of Akyem Asuom, Nana Boadi Amponim Obodade III Kontihene of Akyem Asuom, Nana Boadi Amponim Obodade III

The Kontihene of Akyem Asuom, Nana Boadi Amponim Obodade III, has said that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) should remain in opposition for the next thirty-two (32) years to better serve Ghanaians with their ideas.

According to him, the NPP tends to perform better when in opposition, rather than when the party is in government.

In an interview with Kasapa FM, he stated, “The NPP as a party should remain in opposition for 20 to 32 years and help Ghanaians with their ideas, as they perform better in opposition.”

The chief further called on President John Dramani Mahama to institutionalise the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) Committee.

He said that ORAL should be empowered with the legal authority to prosecute and take individuals to court, urging the president to push for laws that will provide ORAL with prosecutorial powers.

“I am begging the powers that be, go to Parliament, enact the laws that will back ORAL, so that ORAL will have all the capacity to prosecute, the legal right to go to court and subject all these people to what Ghanaians want,” he stated.

The Kontihene further explained that ORAL is a significant factor in the NDC’s election victory, hence there is the need to ensure it is institutionalised.

Article: The rule against touting: Ghana goes the American way

0

Rule 2 of the now “revoked” Legal Profession (Professional Conduct and Etiquette) Rules, 1969 (L.I. 613) of Ghana, provided in part as follows:

Rule 2 – Advertising, Touting and Publicity

(1) A lawyer shall not directly or indirectly apply for or seek instructions for professional business or do or permit in the carrying on of his practice any act or thing which can reasonably be regarded as touting or advertising or as calculated to attract business unfairly.

(3) It is contrary to professional etiquette for a lawyer to do or cause or allow to be done anything for the purpose of touting directly or indirectly or which is calculated to suggest that it is done for that purpose.

In the USA, the Model Rules of Professional Conduct (MRPC), promulgated by the American Bar Association (ABA) and amended several times, are not binding in themselves but with the exception of California, have been adopted, with additions and variations, as the standard by the States.

In light of this, the New York Rules of Professional Conduct (RPC), provide under Rule 7.3, as follows on “Solicitation”:

A lawyer may not solicit clients by in-person, telephone, or real-time or interactive computeraccessed communication unless the recipient is a close friend, relative or former or existing client (RPC rule 7.3 [a][1]).

Rule 15 of the extant Legal Profession (Professional Conduct and Etiquette) Rules, 2020 (L.I. 2423) of Ghana provides:

Solicitation of Client

15. (1) A lawyer or a law firm shall not personally or through other means of communication solicit for professional employment from a prospective client where the motive for the solicitation is the pecuniary gain of the lawyer or the firm unless the person contacted

(a) is a lawyer; or
(b) has a family, personal, or prior professional relationship with the lawyer of the
firm.

Thus like the USA, Ghana now uses the term “solicitation” and permits lawyers to personally solicit for professional engagement from prospective clients with whom they have a certain degree of relationship.

In New York, published, broadcast or internet advertising by lawyers is broadly permitted as long as it is truthful and not deceptive or misleading (Rule 7.1 of the RPC).

In Ghana, lawyers or law firms are permitted to create websites but the rule states that this “does not include social media.” (Rule 15(4) to (8)).

“It should be a turning point for us” – Coach Prosper Ogum optimistic of beating Vision FC and Karela at home

0

Asante Kotoko head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum believes beating Vision FC and Karela United at home can lead his team near the Premier League’s title.

The Porcupine Warriors have shown remarkable improvement, drawing one and winning four of their last five Premier League games with one draw and climbing to sixth on the table with 28 points.

Kotoko’s recent form has been impressive, with the team now trailing behind the top spot with just two points.

A win over the Vision FC on Sunday and Karela on Matchday 17 further bolsters their chances of securing a first place, which would guarantee them the hope of winning the league title.

“I think it should be a turning point for us in terms of our ambition to compete for the trophy. It should be a turning point for us.

“We are playing two games at home, and we should make the very best of this opportunity, try and play well in terms of performance, try and make sure that we make good use of the chances we create. It is all about the three points. When we get the three points or this vital six points will inspire us a lot in terms of our approach at training and our approach in subsequent games so is a good opportunity and we need to grab it,” Coach Ogum said.

The Porcupine Warriors will wrap up the first of the Ghana Premier League against Vision FC before taking on Karela United on matchday 17 at the same venue.

Government spends about $10M on the Black Stars during competitions – George Afriyie

0

The Black Stars pose for a team photo before a game play videoThe Black Stars pose for a team photo before a game

Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has revealed that the government spends approximately $10 million on the Black Stars whenever they participate in a major competition.

Speaking in an interview with Metro TV, the football administrator emphasized that the government of Ghana is the largest financial contributor to the GFA.

He noted that the GFA’s earnings from FIFA are significantly smaller than the funds provided by the government.

“The biggest spender of the GFA is the government of Ghana. The money the government puts into football is far more than what the GFA receives from FIFA.

“The budget for the Black Stars alone during one competition, do you know how much it is? It’s over $10 million. For example, if you’re going to play in the World Cup, when you add flight costs and everything else from start to finish,” Afriyie explained.

There have been calls to scrap the Management Committee of the Black Stars, but Afriyie disagrees. He believes the committee should be retained, provided it is composed of competent individuals.

“I disagree with scrapping the Management Committee because they play a significant role. However, it depends on the kind of Management Committee you put in place. It must consist of people who understand football and are well-versed in our football system. So, I don’t think it should be scrapped,” he added.

Uncap road fund; ensure Board functions effectively

0

The Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry has outlined its expectations following the nomination of Governs Kwame Agbodza as Minister-designate for Roads and Highways.

The Chamber is urging targeted reforms to address critical challenges in the sector.

CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry, Emmanuel Cherry, wants the nominee to prioritise uncapping the Road Fund to ensure sufficient financing for road infrastructure projects.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Thursday, January 16, 2025, Mr. Cherry emphasised the need for an effective and well-functioning Road Fund Board.

“The challenge currently bedevilling the entire sector is about the Road Fund Board itself which is not functioning properly. The Board which is supposed to at least bring the checks and balances into the system, has not been up to its game. Kwame Agbodza played an integral role because we called on him and his committee any time.  So, he is aware of the challenges in there,” he stated.

Mr. Cherry highlighted Mr. Agbodza’s prior contributions as a committee member in addressing road sector challenges.

He expressed optimism that as minister, Mr. Agbodza would advocate for reforms, including appealing to the President and the Finance Minister to uncap the Road Fund.

“So, as he is coming, we believe that with his fresh energy, he will appeal to the president through the finance minister to uncap the road fund for the Board to be able to finance some of it costs and live up to its functions and mandate,” he added.

The Road Fund in Ghana, established by the Road Fund Act of 1997 (Act 536), finances the maintenance and rehabilitation of public roads.

Managed by the Road Fund Management Board, which includes representatives from key institutions such as the Ministries of Finance and Local Government, the board oversees contractor payments and seeks additional funding sources.

Revenue for the fund comes from fees collected from road users. Its primary purpose is to ensure well-maintained roads, facilitating the movement of goods, access to health services and consistent school attendance.

Scholz: Ceasefire offers chance for permanent end to war

0

Berlin, Jan 16, (dpa/GNA) – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, considers the agreement on a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip, as an opportunity for a permanent end to the war.

“It is good that an agreement on a ceasefire and the release of hostages – including Germans – in Gaza seems to have been reached! Now, the agreement must be implemented thoroughly,” Scholz wrote on the platform X.

All hostages must now be released, and the remains of deceased hostages should be handed over to the families for a dignified farewell.

“The ceasefire offers the chance for a permanent end to the war, and the improvement of the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. We will continue to advocate for this,” Scholz wrote.

UK- Ghana Chamber of Commerce releases 2024 Ghana Business Environment and Competitiveness survey report

0

The UK- Ghana Chamber of Commerce (UKGCC), a member-based trade association that promotes trade between the UK and Ghana, has released the 6th edition of its annual Ghana Business Environment and Competitive Survey (BECS) Report for the year 2024.

About 725 businesses across Ghana comprising UKGCC member and non-member companies from 22 industries and ranging from small to large companies, participated in the survey.

Business components assessed included availability of telecom, power, labour, water, and logistics partners, taxation policy, cost of telecoms, government bureaucracy, regulatory framework, and government support of exports.

The report reveals a mixed picture for Ghana’s business environment. While businesses express cautious optimism about future growth, particularly in technology adoption and market expansion, significant challenges remain.

Key survey findings

The survey identifies taxation policy, cost of telecoms, government bureaucracy, and the regulatory framework as the top concerns for businesses in 2024.

For the first time, cost of telecoms and the regulatory framework appeared on the list of poorly rated business components, emphasising areas that require immediate government attention to enhance Ghana’s business environment.

Despite challenges, businesses rated the availability of telecom facilities as the best-performing business component, though this rating declined from 36% in 2023 to 20% in 2024. Other positively rated components include the availability of power, labour, water, and logistics partners.

Corruption remains a persistent issue, consistently appearing among the top five most declined components over the past four years. Tax policy and the cost of power also remain key concerns, highlighting the need for government engagement to develop sustainable solutions.

Respondents identified advanced technology and telecom services as the most improved components since 2021. For the first time, the availability of quality infrastructure was included in the list of improvements, reflecting incremental progress.

In terms of cost of doing business in Ghana, tax policy and macroeconomic challenges, including the weakening of the Ghana Cedi, were highlighted as key drivers of high operational costs, thereby increasing cost of doing business. Persistent exchange rate volatility continues to influence the pricing of domestic factors of production.

Respondents identified domestic marketing, certifications, quality control, and labour as the most affordable business components over the past four years. However, rising inflation in 2024 has impacted the affordability of labour.

Key priorities for action

The report advocates for government-business collaboration to proactively reduce tax burdens, combat corruption and enhance a transparency, streamline and simplify regulations to create a predictable regulatory environment that boosts investor confidence, and improve access to flexible and affordable financing mechanisms and provide growth incentives to support SMEs, which are critical to Ghana’s economic resilience and growth.

Government-business collaboration is also needed to enact policies to ensure the safety of investments and create a stable business climate that attracts both local and international investors.

Leveraging the immense opportunities in key sectors such as manufacturing, technology and services through targeted support, including capacity building and infrastructure investment; and addressing gaps in energy, telecom, and water infrastructure to enable sustainable business operations are also identified as further areas for government-business collaboration.

The collective voices of over 725 respondents in this year’s survey reflect the aspirations, challenges, and contributions of Ghana’s business leaders. These insights serve as a foundation for creating actionable strategies and fostering collaboration between the government, private sector, and international partners to unlock Ghana’s full potential and create a more enabling business environment for sustainable economic growth.

Anthony Pile MBE, UKGCC executive council chairman, remarked that “Creating a safe and secure environment is paramount for fostering business confidence. Strategic investments in community policing, enhanced street lighting, and an increased presence of security personnel can significantly reduce crime and ensure businesses thrive in a stable setting”.

Adjoba Kyiamah, executive director of UKGCC, added that “The 2024 BECS report highlights the critical challenges facing Ghana’s manufacturing sector, including high production costs, limited access to financing, and energy inefficiencies”.

According to Kyiamah, “comprehensive reforms aimed at reducing these operational costs, improving access to affordable financing, and incentivising energy-efficient technologies are essential”.

Such measures, she said, “will not only revitalise the manufacturing sector but also position it as a cornerstone for Ghana’s industrialisation and job creation efforts.”

Commenting on the report, Vish Ashiagbor, country senior partner of PwC, a UKGCC Platinum member company and consultants/advisors for the report, noted that “The report emphasises the urgent need for pragmatic interventions, including clearer and consistent policies, a predictable taxation regime, and sustained collaboration between the government and the private sector to unlock Ghana’s growth potential”.

He was of the view that “a pro-business Government should review the approach for optimising its revenue mobilisation potential and avoid further burdening the business community.”

Mahama engages Mali’s Prime Minister; urges united effort against terrorism

0

President John Mahama has called for enhanced Ghana-Mali cooperation on Sahel security, stressing the need for joint efforts to combat insurgency and terrorism.

Mr Mahama stressed the importance of ensuring peace and promoting trade between the two nations.

He was speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, January 16, following a closed-door meeting with the Malian Prime Minister, Abdoulaye Maïga, who was in Accra to deliver a special message from Malian President, Assimi Goïta.

President Mahama also acknowledged the sovereign decisions of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to form separate confederations but stressed that despite these temporary setbacks, it remains critical to maintain strong relationships across the region.

He expressed optimism that the sub-region will eventually achieve integration as a unified body again.

ECOWAS leaders have sanctioned the departure of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from the regional bloc due to their refusal to embrace civilian rule.

However, the bloc has offered a six-month grace period for these countries to reconsider their decision to restore democratic governance.

Mahama must sack appointees who refuse to declare their assets – Domelevo

0

Daniel Yao Domelevo is a member of the ORAL committee Daniel Yao Domelevo is a member of the ORAL committee

A member of Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) committee, Daniel Yao Domelevo, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to dismiss any appointees in his government who fail to declare their assets to the Auditor-General, as required by law.

Speaking on JoyNews on Thursday, January 16, 2025, Domelevo emphasised that the president must make a public commitment to fighting corruption and ensuring accountability within his administration.

“First and foremost, Mahama can make a public statement that I am not going to protect anybody, because he promised Ghanaians that he was going to fight corruption. Even if there is any audit finding and maybe you’re not able to respond to the issues, I will use that finding to take my job away from you. Because you must not be the one who is misusing public funds and not being able to account for it,” he stated.

Daniel Domelevo pointed out the legal obligation for public officeholders to ensure transparency and accountability.

“I’m not going to tolerate that. If I were he, I would have just watched my appointees after one month and called all of them. How many of you have declared your assets and your liabilities to the Auditor-General? Those who have declared, this way; those who have not declared, this way. When I finish it. Those who have not declared, you are all going home because you have violated the constitution,” he remarked.

He further stressed that failure to comply with this constitutional requirement renders the occupation of public office unconstitutional.

Domelevo urged the president to act decisively to uphold the law and maintain public trust in his administration.

Article 286 of the 1992 Constitution and the Public Office Holders (Declaration of Assets and Disqualification) Act, 1998 (Act 550) provides that a person who holds a public office shall submit to the Auditor-General a written declaration of all properties or assets owned by or liabilities owed, directly or indirectly.

Such officers are to do so before taking office, at the end of every four years, and at the end of their term.

Communications Director of the GFA, Henry Asante Twum Communications Director of the GFA, Henry Asante Twum

Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum has confirmed that changes will be made in the technical team of the Black Stars.

Media reports suggest that assistant coaches, John Paintsil and Joseph Laumann are likely to be shown exit as part of the readjustment of the technical team ahead of the resumption of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March later this year.

Speaking to Asempa FM in an interview, Asante Twum confirmed that there will be changes in the technical team of the team but refused to call out names.

“At the last Executive Council meeting, it was a subject that was thoroughly discussed and a number of suggestions came up aside from the head coach [Otto Addo], the input and the contributions of the assistant coaches were discussed since they came on board in March last year.

“All the work of the backroom staff was analyzed and discussed and eventually decided to ring some changes but specifically, I cannot confirm who will leave. Three people were given a task to return to the Executive Council with certain recommendations.

“A decision was made to bring changes to the technical team but in terms of the personalities, I cannot confirm but the decision will be very soon because there is no time for the team because we are playing World Cup qualifiers in March so if you are bringing in new faces, that has to be done on time so they can settle down before the next phase of the qualifiers,” he added.

Under the guidance of Otto Addo and his assistant coaches made up of John Paintsil, Joseph Laumann and Fatau Dauda, the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in two decades. The Black Stars recorded three defeats and three draws after six games during the qualifiers.

John Paintsil and Joseph Laumann replaced George Boateng and Didi Dramani as Black Stars assistant coaches in March 2024.

I expected the NPP government to withdraw my court case—Kwesi Nyantakyi cries

0

Former GFA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi says he’s very disappointed in the NPP for not cancelling his court case.

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has voiced his frustration with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for not intervening in his prolonged legal battle.

In an interview with Hot FM, Nyantakyi disclosed his expectation that the party would terminate the court case involving corruption allegations stemming from the “Number 12” exposé by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

Nyantakyi, who contested the NPP parliamentary primaries in the Ejisu constituency, stated that his legal troubles were a subject of discussion within the party at the time, but no action was taken.

During my prime time to contest the seat, it was an issue within the party. I thought that if I contested, they [NPP] would have cancelled the court case

The former GFA boss, who has been facing fraud and corruption charges for five years, emphasised the emotional and financial burden the case has placed on him.

I haven’t spent any government money, I haven’t killed anybody, but I’m still in court

Both Nyantakyi and his co-accused, former Northern Regional GFA boss Abdulai Alhassan, have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The case, last adjourned to October 16, 2024, awaits the outcome of an appeal at the Court of Appeal before High Court proceedings can continue.

What lies ahead for Nyantakyi

Nyantakyi’s public criticism of the NPP reflects his disappointment with the party’s perceived unwillingness to support its members during challenging times.

With his legal battles ongoing, Nyantakyi may have to decide whether to remain with the NPP in the hope of future support or explore alternative options, potentially aligning with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as he seeks assistance in clearing his name.

PwC report exposes mismanagement, questionable practices at ECG – ACEP

0

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has issued a response to allegations by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) alleging ECG’s purported non-compliance with load management instructions.

The Policy Lead for Petroleum and Conventional Energy at the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), Kodzo Yaotse has commended Price WaterHouse Coopers (PwC) for its latest audit report, which has shed light on significant levels of mismanagement and questionable practices at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

This follows an audit by PricewaterhouseCoopers revealing that the ECG under-declared over 1 billion cedis in revenue to the cash waterfall mechanism, disrupting the equitable distribution of funds in the power sector.

The report also highlighted ECG’s violation of an IMF directive by operating more than 80 bank accounts instead of a single account, raising concerns about financial mismanagement and inefficiencies.

According to him, the report exposes key issues undermining the integrity of Ghana’s power sector and offers critical insights into the challenges surrounding sector debt and revenue allocation.

In an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Thursday, January 16, Mr Yaotse stated that the findings revealed that ECG has been unilaterally altering the agreed-upon cash waterfall mechanism—a system designed to regulate the equitable distribution of revenue among stakeholders.

“This is the second audit that has been done by PwC on the power sector in terms of the payments. And I must say, it’s been very valuable in exposing the higher level of mismanagement and the questionable difference at play at ECG which is undermining the integrity of the power sector,” he said.

Mr Yaotse described as unsustainable the country paying approximately $1.5 billion annually to clear debts owed to IPPs and other entities.

“ECG has been under-declaring how much it collects to retain more funds for its operations. This practice deprives independent power producers (IPPs) and other stakeholders of their rightful share, resulting in mounting debts that the government has had to cover from the national budget,” he added.

The cash waterfall mechanism, a framework agreed upon by all stakeholders in the sector, ensures that revenue collected is distributed equitably to power generators, distributors, and other players. ACEP criticised ECG for deviating from this mechanism, adding that the funds retained by the company have often been used for purposes that are questionable.

“ECG cannot unilaterally decide to divert from a system that was designed to address revenue challenges in the sector. If they have legitimate concerns, those should be addressed through the proper channels rather than through unilateral actions,” ACEP emphasised.

ACEP underscored the urgency of addressing the inefficiencies highlighted in the PwC report, warning that continued mismanagement would exacerbate the sector’s financial challenges.

Cote d’Ivoire earn state-of-the-art Technical Centre through FIFA Forward program

0

FIFA state-of-the-art Technical Centre FIFA state-of-the-art Technical Centre

FIFA, through the FIFA Forward Program, is set to fund the renovation and rehabilitation of a state-of-the-art Technical Centre for the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF).

The National Technical Centre, financed by the FIFA Forward Program, will serve as the training and operations hub for all Ivorian national teams.

The new technical centre will feature a medical centre, a 400-square-meter gym, a storage facility, a food court, meeting rooms, a 30-room residential unit, modernised swimming pools, and training facilities.

A groundbreaking ceremony took place on Thursday, attended by the President of the Ivorian Senate, Kandia Camara; FIF President, Mr. Yacine Idriss Diallo; CAF General Secretary, Veron Mosengo-Omba; and FIFA Deputy Chief Member Associations Director and Regional Director for Africa, Gelson Fernandes.

The renovation is expected to cost more than USD 4 million, funded exclusively by the FIFA Forward Program, which supports developmental projects in Member Associations.

“We are celebrating a historic moment: the laying of the first brick of the renovated national centre of the Ivorian Football Federation. This symbolic act marks the beginning of an ambitious project that will bring dynamism and guarantee a bright future for football in Côte d’Ivoire,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

“Once fully renovated, this centre will not only be a national football hub but will also become a real symbol of hope and opportunity, a springboard for young players, coaches, and football enthusiasts. It will proudly represent Côte d’Ivoire and the whole of Africa in international competitions,” Infantino added.

FIF President Diallo paid tribute to his predecessors for their visionary efforts toward realizing this dream.

“This centre was initially created by my predecessor, Jacques Anouma. At the time, there were ambitions to make it a high-level national centre. Unfortunately, after its construction, it remained somewhat stagnant. When we took office, we committed to turning it into a strong project to fully support young people. It is a centre dedicated to training both girls and boys. For us, it is an essential tool for the development of elite youth football,” Diallo said.

The ceremony was attended by more than 25 presidents of African Football Associations, including Alfred Randriamanampisoa (Madagascar), Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon), Ibrahim Musa Gusau (Nigeria), Mathurin de Chacus (Benin), and Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas (Congo), among others.

Created in 2016 by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, the FIFA Forward Program is the largest and most comprehensive sport development initiative in the world. It seeks to redistribute FIFA revenues equally among the 211 Member Associations.

The program’s core objectives are threefold: increase investment in football development worldwide, achieve greater impact through specific and tailored projects, and ensure transparency and effective management of investments in football development.

The funds are utilized across five main areas: infrastructure, capacity building, competitions, national teams, subventions, and other projects tailored to each federation’s needs, aligning with FIFA’s strategy to make football truly global.

By the end of 2026, FIFA is set to have invested a record-breaking $5 billion in football development projects worldwide.

A devastating attack on a cargo vehicle in Bawku, Upper East Region, has sent shockwaves through the community, undermining the fragile peace process in the area.

The incident occurred less than 24 hours after President John Mahama’s visit to Bawku and Nalerigu, where he appealed for a ceasefire and encouraged dialogue among the feuding factions.

The cargo vehicle, registered as GR 4604-09 and owned by a Mamprusi businessman, came under fire near Missiga while traveling with a security escort.

Eyewitnesses report that three gunmen emerged from a nearby drinking bar and opened fire on the convoy, prompting a brief exchange of gunfire before the assailants retreated into nearby houses.

This latest incident raises concerns about the challenges of fostering trust among the warring factions and achieving lasting peace in the region.

Despite efforts by the government and peacekeeping organizations, the conflict in Bawku has persisted, with sporadic outbreaks of violence.

76th New Year School calls for election of MMDCES

0

By Ernest Nutsugah

Accra, Jan. 16, GNA – The 76th Annual New Year School and Conference (ANYSC) has strongly recommended the election of Metropolitan Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCES) along partisan political lines.

The participants called for the support of the election of MMDCES and the inclusion of political parties and independent candidates in local government.

The election of MMDCES is one of the 15-point recommendations issued at the end of the three-day session held at the University of Ghana, Legon.

“It would be beneficial for the government to consider constitutional amendments that allow for the election of political parties and independent candidates in local government, given the challenges of the past 32 years.

“This would promote a multi-party democracy, enhance district development, and encourage broader citizen participation.” Dr. Simon-Peter Kafui Aheto, Director, 76th Annual New Year School & Conference, stated.

Apart from strengthening grassroots democracy, the Conference called for women empowerment at the local level and the enforcement of spatial planning laws by MMDAs to ensure that “development projects comply with land use and building standards.”

‘He was really suffering’ – Graham Potter explains Mohammed Kudus’ early substitution

Mohammed Kudus, midfielder for West Ham Mohammed Kudus, midfielder for West Ham

Mohammed Kudus’ early exit during West Ham’s match against Fulham on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, was addressed by the club’s new manager, Graham Potter.

The coach revealed that the talented midfielder was enduring a tough time on the pitch, which led to his substitution.

Kudus was taken off just after the hour mark, with the Hammers leading 2-1. Potter opted to bring on Danny Ings in place of the Ghanaian.

However, the decision sparked backlash from West Ham fans, many of whom felt that substituting their star player was unwarranted.

Addressing the criticism, Potter, who was managing his first Premier League game for West Ham, explained his reasoning.

The former Chelsea boss attributed Kudus’ substitution to his struggles on the pitch and highlighted the positive impact of Ings.

“We moved Mohammed Kudus a little bit higher up, and he helped us. Danny Ings coming on probably gave us more balance, even though it was a tough call because Mo’s a top, top player. But he was really suffering,” Potter said.

Kudus, now in his second season with West Ham, has faced challenges during the 2024/25 campaign. Unlike his impressive debut season, the 24-year-old has struggled for form, managing just three goals in 16 Premier League appearances.
