2,000 Blue Water Guards to be trained by the end of the year – Lands Minister

0

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emanuel Armah Kofi Buah has announced that government is on course to train 2,000 Blue Water Guards by the close of 2025 to help protect the country’s rivers and water bodies from the impact of illegal mining.

During his presentation at the Government Accountability Series held at the Jubilee House, the minister, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, explained that the Blue Water Initiative remains a key strategy in government’s fight against environmental destruction caused by galamsey.

The Government Accountability Series is an initiative by the Ministry of Information, in collaboration with civil society organisations, aimed at keeping public officials accountable to the people they serve.

Mr. Kofi Buah noted that over 450 Blue Water Guards had already completed training and were actively working in various parts of the country.

He revealed that a second group of 530 personnel is expected to graduate on Friday, July 25.

“These officers are not armed but are trained to act as environmental intelligence agents. Their job is to monitor activities, engage communities, and promote awareness about the dangers of illegal mining and the need to protect our natural resources” he stated.

He highlighted that the presence of the guards is already having a positive impact in some mining areas, with residents becoming more aware of the importance of clean water and sustainable practices.

The minister revealed that the second phase of the Blue Water Initiative will focus on restoring polluted rivers by removing harmful chemicals and returning water bodies to their natural state.

“Feasibility studies for this phase are currently underway,” he remarked.

Mr. Buah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the environment and ensuring a more sustainable future for all Ghanaians.

Blakofe expresses frustration over growing indiscipline in Ghana

Blakope has expressed her concerns about indiscipline across the country Blakope has expressed her concerns about indiscipline across the country

Former Deputy Director of the Ghana Tourist Development Company, Akua Djanie, popularly known as Blakofe, has expressed her concerns about the increasing levels of indiscipline across the country.

Her utterances were captured on an X post by Sikaofficial on July 23, 2025.

The accompanying caption stated, “Former Deputy Director of the Ghana Tourist Development Company, Akua Djanie, popularly known as Blakofe, has raised concerns about the growing level of indiscipline in the country after witnessing a woman selling her wares on a section of a major street. She noted that such acts have become common, with perpetrators justifying their actions due to the need to survive and the high costs of living.”

“This is how indiscipline starts. This is a street you are supposed to drive on, yet this unknown trader has turned it into her trading space with her clothes. When I asked her if this was the right thing to do, she responded with, ‘Aane, y3b3 y3 nu den?'” she said.

“I understand the system is tough, but that’s not an excuse to be indiscipline. Should we all start bringing our clothes to the roadside to trade? What do you expect to happen here?” she added.

Her comments come after observing a woman selling goods on a major street, a situation Blakofe noted is becoming increasingly common.

“We need discipline and leadership in this country. Actions like these do not help us at all. We cannot just decide to trade on the roadside because times are hard; this is a road, after all,” she remarked.

“This is where she is trading, apparently sitting on the floor instead of using a tabletop. If I speak out about it, people say I’m too-known, but these issues are what make our country dysfunctional. M’abr3,” she added.

Blakofe pointed out that such actions are often justified by those involved with the excuse that they need to survive amid high cost of living.

A video has emerged showing the grieving family of 18-year-old Ghanaian student, Nana Agyei Oduru Ahyia, whose body was returned to Ghana after his mysterious death in Latvia.

According to Latvian authorities, Nana Agyei died after falling from the sixth floor of his apartment.

However, his family disagrees, pointing to a voice note he sent days before his death saying he had been poisoned.

They are therefore calling for a full investigation and justice.

In a video shared by Citi FM on Facebook on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, a visibly distraught woman believed to be the mother of 18-year-old Nana Agyei Oduru Ahyia was seen crying and pleading for help from President Mahama.

“Nana Agyei, due (to wit, Nana, sorry),” she wailed.

“Mahama, will you let these people go free? Mahama, help me. I’m in pain. I’m suffering. They’ve been so wicked to us; they’re tearing my heart apart. Is the president in Ghana? Please help us. Ibrahim, father of the nation, Nurudeen Ibrahim, please help me,” she said while crying.

Freight Forwarders welcome new port exchange rate rule

Chamber of Freight Forwarders and Traders say new directive would enhance transparency at ports Chamber of Freight Forwarders and Traders say new directive would enhance transparency at ports

The Chamber of Freight Forwarders and Traders has welcomed a new directive from the Bank of Ghana requiring all port service providers to publicly display the exchange rates they use when billing clients.

Describing the move as timely and necessary, the Chamber believes it will enhance transparency at Ghana’s ports and help reduce the cost of doing business.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, the Chamber’s President, Dennis Amfo Sefa, praised the central bank for responding to long-standing concerns raised by industry players.

He said the measure directly addresses calls for accountability from freight forwarders and traders.

“We’ve pushed for this kind of openness for years. If the government truly wants to ease the burden on businesses, then it’s essential for shipping lines, terminal operators, and other port actors to be transparent,” he said.

Sefa added that the government’s efforts to control exchange rate fluctuations should be reflected in the charges importers and exporters face at the ports.

According to him, applying official rates in billing will ensure that businesses benefit from broader economic reforms.

Under the new rules, which took effect on July 22, 2025, shipping lines, terminal operators, freight forwarders, and other port-related service providers must display their exchange rates daily.

These rates must be published on websites, clearly posted at physical offices, and communicated to customers before any invoices are issued.

The directive forms part of revised foreign exchange guidelines for the maritime and shipping sector, aimed at promoting fair trade practices and eliminating inconsistent billing, an issue that has long affected importers and exporters.

Over 200 trafficked Ghanaians rescued from Nigeria

0

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has revealed that more than 200 Ghanaians who fell victim to a trafficking and scamming syndicate in Nigeria—believed to be linked to the Q-Net group—have been rescued and repatriated.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, July 23, the Minister also disclosed that an estimated 500 Ghanaian nationals are still being held hostage in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, with efforts underway to identify and safely return them home.

“Our mission in Nigeria has recently rescued and repatriated a total of 202 Ghanaians, 78 through the Abuja Mission, and 124 through the Lagos Mission,” he said.

According to the Minister, investigations have revealed that some of the ringleaders behind the Q-Net operations in Abidjan are Ghanaians who were once victims of the same scam and are now exploiting others in an attempt to recover their own losses.

Okudzeto Ablakwa assured Parliament that the Ministry, in collaboration with both national and international agencies, is intensifying efforts to dismantle the trafficking network and implement lasting solutions to what he described as a “deeply troubling trend.”

“The traffickers lure unsuspecting compatriots to supposed countries under the pretext of facilitating their travels to France or other destinations in Europe or elsewhere for paid jobs. The traffickers entice the victims to the supposed transit country for the processing of their visas, as the procedure takes a long time to complete in Ghana,” he explained.

He further noted that the secretive operations of the scammers and the quiet arrival of victims in Côte d’Ivoire have made it difficult to determine the exact number of Ghanaians currently being held.

“According to the Ghana Embassy in Abidjan, the clandestine nature of the operations of the scammers and the silent arrival of victims in Côte d’Ivoire make it challenging to determine the number of Ghanaians being held hostage.

“The Mission estimates that there are over 500 Ghanaians currently held in secluded locations. Efforts are being made to bring them home,” he added.

Ghana to establish National Metrology Institute-Minister

0

Accra, July 23, GNA-Ghana is in the process of establishing a National Metrology Institute to bolster the country’s status as a regional leader in scientific and industrial measurement, Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, has said.

Speaking at the opening of the 18th General Assembly of the Intra-Africa Metrology System (AFRIMETS) in Accra, the Minister said the country was building a metrology system that would not only support domestic manufacturing but also integrate seamlessly with global standards.

She said the move was critical to the success of the government’s 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme (24H+), which is expected to help create over 1.7 million jobs.

“In a world increasingly driven by precision and data, accurate measurements are the currency of trust. They ensure that goods are safe, services are reliable, and trade is fair,” Mrs Ofosu-Adjare said.

She said with support from the German government, and through strategic cooperation with the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), GSA was undertaking a bold transformation of the national measurement
infrastructure.

She said GSA was spearheading efforts to upgrade its metrology capabilities to position the country as a regional leader in scientific and industrial measurement.

“Already, significant strides have been made. We are expanding our capabilities in temperature, mass, and electricity measurements, ensuring that these critical domains meet international standards and are traceable to the SI units,” the Minister added.

These upgrades will not only serve Ghana’s industries and consumers but will also support the broader ECOWAS region with highquality, internationally recognized metrological services.

Mrs Ofosu-Adjare reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to AFRIMETS, saying through it the continent was building a uniquely African metrology system that would support the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), enhance competitiveness, and safeguard public health and safety.

“AFRIMETS continues to be a beacon of regional cooperation, harmonizing measurement systems, facilitating trade, and building technical capacity across Africa. Its work is essential to achieving the aspirations of Agenda 2063, and Ghana is proud to contribute to this shared vision,” the Minister said.

President of AFRIMETS, Dr. Henry
Rotich, said the 2025 General Assembly was a testament to the collective commitment to advancing metrology and fostering collaboration across the African continent.

He said over the past year remarkable progress had been made to enhance measurement standards and practices.

“Our efforts have not only strengthened our regional capabilities but have also positioned Africa as a key player in the global metrology community,”Dr Rotich added.

“Metrology fosters trust in trade, drives innovation in science, and anchors technological progress,” he noted.

The Board Chairman of the Ghana Standards Authority, Hudu Mogtari, called for the building of robust measurement systems to support the growth of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

“In this context, metrology is not a peripheral concern; it is a strategic enabler. It is the invisible architecture that supports quality assurance, competitiveness, and trust in our markets,” he said.

“Together, let us build a metrology ecosystem that is not only technically sound, but strategically bold. One that reflects Africa’s aspirations, amplifies its voice, and secures its place in the global standards landscape,” Mr Mogtari added.
Acting CEO of the GSA, Clifford Frimpong, said the event was a reaffirmation of the commitment to advancing metrology for sustainable
development across Africa.

“Your presence here today is a testament to the growing importance of metrology in shaping Africa’s industrialization, trade, and innovation agenda,” he said.

The 18th AFRIMETS General Assembly on the theme: “150 Years of the Metre Convention: Prospects for Metrology within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)” is a week-long programme of technical meetings, workshops, and industrial tours aimed at harmonising Africa’s measurement systems and advancing the continent’s metrology agenda.

AFRIMETS was founded to harmonize metrology across Africa and is supported by NEPAD, PTB, NMISA, and others.

Ghana unveils details of sweeping mining law reforms

0

Accra — Ghana plans to shorten mining licence durations and mandate direct revenue-sharing with local communities in its most sweeping mining law reforms in nearly two decades, details of which were announced by a government minister on Wednesday.

The planned overhaul reflects a broader trend across West Africa, where governments are rewriting mining codes to capture more value from rising commodity prices.

Ghanaian lands & natural resources minister Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah said the changes, which include scrapping automatic renewal of some licences, will apply only to future contracts, a departure from the stance in Mali and Burkina Faso where military-led governments have applied reforms retroactively,

“In Ghana, we don’t do retrospective laws,” Buah said at a presentation in the capital, Accra. “Existing agreements are sanctified and will be respected.”

He added that the overhaul of the Minerals and Mining Act and mining policy was 85% complete after extensive stakeholder consultations.

Ghana, Africa’s top gold producer, expects output to rise to 5.1-million ounces this year. Major miners in the country include Newmont, Gold Fields, AngloGold Ashanti, Zijin, Asante Gold and Perseus. It also exports bauxite and manganese with plans to start lithium production.

Shorter leases

Under the proposed law changes, prospecting licences would no longer be held indefinitely, and the maximum term for mining leases would be reduced from 30 years to a shorter period agreed by the government and firms. Companies failing to meet environmental, social or production obligations would lose the right to automatic licence renewal.

In a major shift, the government plans to abolish development agreements, in which companies send money to the central government.

Instead, companies will be required to sign agreements committing a fixed percentage of gross mineral sales revenue to fund local development projects as the government seeks to address long-standing grievances from communities that they have seen little benefit from mining operations.

The reforms also propose a three-tier mineral rights regime, introducing a new medium-scale licence category to bridge the gap between large multinational operators and small-scale artisanal miners.

Another key change under consideration is the reduction or abolition of stability agreements, which currently offer up to 15 years of tax and regulatory protection to large investors. Future agreements would be limited to capital recovery periods for major investments.

Abiba’ and ‘Meeri’ hitmaker bags PhD in Pharmacy; now Dr. Oduro

0

In the early 2000s, his name echoed through Ghana’s music scene. Mr. Oduro, as he was then known, gave us hits like “Abiba” and “Meeri,” collaborating with KK Fosu and Yoggie Doggie. Then, just as he was rising, he disappeared from the spotlight.

Now reintroduced to the world as Dr. Oduro, the once-celebrated musician has resurfaced—not with a new track, but with a stethoscope, a doctorate in pharmacy, and a passion for public health.

In a recent conversation, he opened up about his transition from music to medicine, and how he’s using both passions to make a difference.

“I never stopped dreaming—my dreams just evolved.”

Dr. Oduro’s shift away from music wasn’t because of a scandal or burnout. Instead, he made a conscious decision to pursue something deeper.

“I loved music, and I still do,” he said. “But at a point, I wanted to do more with my life. I wanted to help people in a different way.”

That desire led him into pharmacy. He began the journey at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he spent a semester at the School of Pharmacy. A proud Katanga Hall resident, he later moved to the United States and earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2017 from Buffalo, New York. He’s been practicing for eight years.

But his love for healthcare didn’t come out of nowhere.

“My uncle was a medical doctor. He opened a chemical shop and started giving me books on medications when I was about 12. That planted the seed.”

Music, Medicine, and Motivation

Though his career path changed, Dr. Oduro hasn’t left music behind. Instead, he says he now blends his artistic and scientific sides through motivational speaking and health advocacy.

“I’ve found a new stage. It’s not music performances anymore, but platforms where I speak to people about purpose, discipline, and health.”

He’s becoming a familiar face on social media, using his voice to motivate the youth, promote wellness, and inspire people to dream beyond limitations.

When asked what health advice he often gives, his answers are refreshingly simple:

“Sleep well, drink enough water, and exercise. These are small habits, but they make a big difference.”

And the secret to sticking with healthy habits?

“Discipline. Without discipline, nothing lasts.”

A Word to the Youth

Dr. Oduro is passionate about helping young people see beyond trends and temporary fame.

“Don’t be afraid to change direction. Don’t think giving up one dream means failure. Sometimes, it means you’ve found a bigger one.”

He encourages the youth to:

• Work hard at whatever they pursue
• Stay resilient through life’s challenges
• Use their stories to uplift others

What’s Next?

Dr. Oduro says he’s just getting started. Alongside his pharmacy practice, he plans to build a stronger online presence, focusing on health education, lifestyle tips, and motivational content.

“I want to bring creativity to health promotion. It doesn’t have to be boring. We can make it engaging, relatable, and even fun.”

For now, he invites everyone to connect with him on his social media platforms.

“Let’s grow together. Let’s live better.”

Kuami Eugene doesn’t respect anybody – DopeNation

0

Ghanaian musical duo, DopeNation Ghanaian musical duo, DopeNation

Ghanaian musical duo Dope Nation has opened up about why they are not close to Kuami Eugene, despite previously working under the same record label.

Speaking on 3 Music TV on July 22, 2025, DopeNation alleged that Kuami Eugene lacks respect for others, claiming his fame has gone to his head.

“Every industry has that one person who feels he’s too famous, so he ends up not respecting anybody. He’s been handed everything and thinks he’s the ‘darling boy’. I know I’m speaking the truth, and a lot of people will agree with me,” they said.

“He’s sort of the industry’s ‘asshole,’ and you can’t do anything about it, so we have to accept him as he is. We knew him from the outside, but when we got in, that’s what we were told.”

The Zormizor hitmakers added that Kuami Eugene isn’t as friendly as people perceive him to be.

Despite being an adult, he is often referred to as a “spoilt child.”

“Once you meet him, you’ll get that arrogant attitude. The best thing is not to engage in instant conversation with him. In the studio, you have to stay in your space, he’s not your friend,” the duo claimed.

They continued, “A year passed, and whenever we made music, we noticed he would steal our style and beats. But you can’t complain because you’re on the same label. Even though he’s grown, he’s still tagged as a ‘spoilt child.’”

NHIA competition or outsourcing? – Minority raise clarity concerns over MahamaCares

0

Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Parliament, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Parliament, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye

The Minority in Parliament has raised concerns over the newly passed Ghana Medical Trust Fund Bill, 2025, popularly known as the MahamaCares Programme.

According to the Minority, the policy risks competing with or undermining the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) unless critical issues are addressed.

The bill, passed on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, under a certificate of urgency, aims to establish a dedicated fund to support specialized medical care for chronic and life-threatening conditions such as cancer, stroke, kidney failure, and diabetes.

However, the Minority, led by the Ranking Member of the Health Committee, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, has called for greater clarity to prevent overlap with the NHIA’s mandate and ensure sustainable financing.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Dr. Afriye highlighted the Minority’s objection to Clause 3A of the bill, which allocates 20% of NHIA funds to the Trust.

He argued that diverting such a significant portion of NHIA resources could weaken its ability to deliver primary healthcare services to Ghanaians, particularly the poor and vulnerable.

The Minority contends that this allocation could act as a “disguised capping” of NHIA funds, endangering equitable healthcare access.

Dr. Afriye emphasized that without clear delineation, the Trust’s operations could compete with NHIA services, especially in the treatment of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

“At what point does the NHIA stop providing care, and when does the Trust take over?” he questioned, noting that the lack of clarity could confuse or delay patients seeking care.

He further highlighted a concerning provision requiring patients to apply for specialist care, a process that takes approximately two weeks.

“During this period, who ensures the patient’s care? This gap poses a risk to Ghanaians’ health,” Dr. Afriye warned.

The Minority further warned that the Trust could end up functioning as an outsourcing entity for the NHIA.

Dr. Afriye stressed that Ghanaians need clear guidance on where to seek care under the NHIA and where to seek care under the Trust to avoid confusion and ensure efficient healthcare delivery.

“So there are some questions that have to be answered. As far as we all want this trust to stand the test of time, and those questions if not answered, might imply that the trust is made to compete with the NHIS and also to weaken the NHIS.

“If these questions are clearly answered, then what we see is that the trust is more of an entity performing what we’ll see outsource function of the NHIS. That is what we see the trust to be doing. There’s a function of the NHIS, and it’s more of outsourcing some aspect of its work to the trust. If that is what the trust is meant to be, there should be clarity, and there should be clarity for Ghanaians to understand where to seek care with the NHIS and where to seek care with the trust,” he noted.

The Minority further raised concern over the funding source for the policy and proposed that the government considers allocating the COVID Levy which it had promised to scrap towards the MahamaCares.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, launched by President John Dramani Mahama on April 29, 2025, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre, is designed to provide financial assistance for NCDs not fully covered by the NHIA, such as cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and chronic kidney failure.

Ballagonnor Community gets Solar Power Boost after Channel One TV Report

0

A recent report by Channel One TV exposing the lack of electricity in Ballagonnor, a community in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, has sparked a major intervention.

In response to the exposé, Betway Ghana, through its Power Up initiative, has constructed and donated solar-powered charging stations to the community, providing a sustainable energy solution for residents who have lived off the national grid for years.

Since its founding, Ballagonnor has remained without access to electricity despite being located within the capital region, leaving residents in the dark and hindering development.

During the commissioning and handover ceremony on Wednesday, July 23, Betway’s Country Manager for Marketing, Kwabena Oppong, underscored the company’s commitment to impactful social responsibility.

“Being able to offer solutions that are impactful to the people is important to Betway. We have seen media stories that indicated that this community does not have access to power, and our small contribution is by providing smart power, which is in alignment with the nation’s policy for the community,” he stated.
Also in attendance was the Member of Parliament for Domeabra-Obom, Isaac Awuku Yibor, who expressed gratitude for the gesture while highlighting broader energy access challenges in the area.

“Thank you for this project. May God bless you. In this community, we have a lot of problems, including electricity. We are left with 147 communities to be connected to the national grid. Seeing this project has made me very happy,” he stated.
Residents also welcomed the development with enthusiasm. Edna Obro, a community member, described the solar-powered stations as a much-needed relief that would greatly improve their daily lives.

Asawase Zongo Chief calls for calm after assassination of Kusasi leader

The Sarkin Zango Palace in Asawase has condemned the assassination of the Kusasi Chief of the Ashanti Region, Abdul-Malik Azenbe, and urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue.

In a statement issued by the Asawase Zongo Community Chief, Alhaji Shaibu Suleiman M. B., the Palace expressed deep sorrow over the killing, which occurred in Asawase on the night of Tuesday, July 22.

The Palace extended condolences to the bereaved family, the Kusasi community, and the wider Zongo population.

“We respectfully appeal to the entire Zongo community and the general public to remain calm and peaceful, and to allow the security agencies the necessary space and cooperation to conduct thorough investigations,” the statement read.

The Palace also called on residents to assist the police with credible information to help bring the perpetrators to justice and urged the security services to act swiftly and professionally to restore public confidence.

The statement acknowledged the swift intervention of Asawase Member of Parliament and Minister of Interior and National Security, Muntaka Mubarak, and Asokore Mampong Municipal Chief Executive, Ben Abdallah Alhassane, in managing the crisis.

Urging Zongo residents to shun violence, the Palace reminded all communities to honor the counsel of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, in maintaining peace and coexistence.

“Let us not allow this tragedy to sow seeds of division or unrest. The strength of our community lies in our unity, discipline, and adherence to the teachings of peace in Islam,” the chief stated.

Gov’t uncovers ammunition theft within GAF

0

The government has uncovered a case of ammunition theft within the Ghana Armed Forces, predating the 2024 transfer of thousands of unaccounted rounds to the National Security Secretariat.

Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah made the revelation during a working visit to the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, as part of a familiarisation tour of key military institutions. He linked the persistence of chieftaincy conflicts across the country to the unlawful possession of firearms by civilians.

Dr. Boamah assured that the government is taking swift action to address ammunition breaches and tighten security oversight.

“I have disclosed that in 2024, there was an incident of ammunition moving from the Ghana Armed Forces to the National Security in 2024. As we speak, the National Security Secretariat under President Mahama is investigating the movement of ammunition.

“Beyond that particular case is another one that we have uncovered, that prior to the 2024 incident, there was also theft of ammunition within the Ghana Armed Forces.

“I am raising this because such ammunitions find their way into the hands of people who are not well trained and have ulterior motives,” he said.

Ghana to reclaim major mine by March 2025 as part of push for local ownership – Lands Minister

0

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, says the government has secured a deal that will see a major mine returned to full Ghanaian ownership by March next year.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series at Jubilee House on Wednesday, July 23, Mr Buah said the Mahama-led government is determined to empower Ghanaians to benefit directly from the country’s natural resources.

“Some of those agreements are really sanctified, and we are going to respect that. But going forward, exactly what are the things that we can do to really empower the people of Ghana and make sure that the resources of Ghana… are basically putting Ghanaians at the commanding height of our industry,” he said.

He revealed that within six months, the government had negotiated terms enabling the takeover of a 30-year-old mine by Ghanaians.

“By March next year, we are going to get a mine that was 30 years old back in the hands of the people of Ghana,” Mr Buah said.

To achieve genuine national control, the Lands Minister detailed reforms at the Minerals Commission that would end perpetual prospecting licences and abolish outdated development deals.

He said instead, they will be replaced by Community Development Agreements (CDAs), mandating mining companies to allocate a percentage of mineral sales to benefit host communities.

The reforms include limiting the duration of prospecting licences from “perpetuity” to a defined minimal period, reducing maximum mining lease terms from 30 years to an adjustable limit, abolishing Development Agreements in favor of CDAs with revenue-sharing provisions for community projects, introducing a medium-scale mining licence in a three-tier mineral rights regime and shortening or eliminating stability agreements from the current 15‑year cap, ensuring they apply only to large-scale investments.

“These significant changes are about making sure the people of Ghana are the real beneficiaries of these resources,” Mr Buah said. “This was the vision of our founders… and this is what the president is fighting for.”

Ashanti Region Kusasi Chief Abdul-Malik Azenbe was killed on Tuesday Ashanti Region Kusasi Chief Abdul-Malik Azenbe was killed on Tuesday

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into the fatal shooting of Abdul-Malik Azenbe, who served as both the Kusasi Chief of the Ashanti Region and the Kaadi Divisional Area Chief in the Upper East Region’s Binduri District.

In a statement sighted by GhanaWeb, the police gave details of its preliminary investigations into the shooting and killing of the chief, which happened on Tuesday, July 23, 2025.

The statement released on July 23, 2025, by the police, which described the chief as a “middle-aged man” without mentioning his name, noted that he was shot by two men.

It stated that the victim succumbed to his injuries at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim, a middle-aged man, was fatally shot by two unidentified assailants. The suspects, each riding on a motorbike, reportedly approached their victim and opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene.

“The victim was initially rushed to the Manhyia District Hospital and later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead. His body has since been deposited at the Ebenezer Mortuary in Tafo for autopsy,” part of the statement reads.

The police also stated that a team of police officers led by the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, has recovered two empty shells suspected to be from an AK-47 assault rifle from the crime scene.

It went on to assure the public that the person responsible for the “heinous crime” would be dealt with.

GIFF predicts price relief as BoG issues new rules for shipping lines

Prices of imported goods are expected to reduce soon Prices of imported goods are expected to reduce soon

The Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF) has hinted at a likely reduction in the prices of imported goods following the new guidelines issued by the Bank of Ghana regarding exchange rates charged by shipping lines.

According to the Vice President of GIFF, Nana Asiamah Peprah I, the independent rates previously charged by shipping lines caused traders to overprice goods.

He noted that with the new guidelines, prices are likely to drop, since many shipping lines had been quoting rates “way above” those of the Bank of Ghana and commercial banks.

“Some of these shipping lines that were quoting very high rates are now being compelled to work with the Bank of Ghana rates, which will definitely impact on the cost of imports and prices on the market,” he was quoted by myjoyonline.com as saying.

“This is one of the reasons why some of these traders have not been responding to current developments on the market when it comes to the cedi’s appreciation,” he added.

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) issued the new guidelines to address growing concerns over discrepancies in exchange rates charged by various shipping lines operating in the country.

This follows multiple reports from importers and industry stakeholders about inconsistencies in the application of exchange rates at Ghana’s ports, issues many say have led to unfair charges, a lack of transparency, and distortions in the cost of doing business.

In a press release issued on Monday, July 22, 2025, and sighted by GhanaWeb Business, the Central Bank said the move is aimed at promoting transparency, consistency, and compliance with Ghana’s foreign exchange regulatory framework.

“The guidelines aim to ensure transparency, consistency, and alignment with regulatory frameworks in foreign exchange pricing for services offered at the ports,” the statement read.

In a statement issued on July 22, 2025, the bank announced the following guidelines:

1. The guidelines apply to all players in the shipping industry operating

in Ghana.

2. All industry players must publish daily exchange rates used for invoicing

on their websites and/or at their premises.

3. The published rate must be available to customers and communicated

clearly to them prior to the issuance of invoices or payment.

4. Invoices should clearly indicate:

i. The currency of the service;

ii. The applied exchange rate;

iii. The date of application; and

iv. The final amount in GHS or USD.

5. Exchange rates must be market-reflective of their commercial bank rates

which is expected to be benchmarked to the Bank of Ghana’s published

interbank exchange rate and not arbitrarily determined.

6. In case of disputes relating to the exchange rate application:

i. Customers may lodge a formal complaint with the service provider

ii. Unresolved complaints may be escalated to the Ghana Shippers’

Authority (GSA).

7. All industry players must comply with the Foreign Exchange Act, 2006

(Act 723) and related notices.

8. Non-compliance may result in administrative sanctions.

9. The guidelines shall come into effect on 22nd July, 2025 and remain in

force until otherwise amended or revoked.

Nigeria’s Maduka Okoye banned two months for match fixing

Okoye is a goalkeeper of Nigeria Okoye is a goalkeeper of Nigeria

Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has been handed a two-month suspension by the FIGC, despite being cleared of direct involvement in match-fixing allegations.

The 25-year-old Udinese shot-stopper was at the centre of an investigation after he received a yellow card for time-wasting during a Serie A match against Lazio in March 2024.

Suspicion arose when it emerged that a close friend of Okoye, who owns a pizzeria in Udine, won over €120,000 from a bet predicting that the keeper would be booked during the game.

Following weeks of scrutiny, the FIGC National Federal Court ruled this week that Okoye did not deliberately fix the match or cooperate with any betting scam.

However, the court concluded that he violated the general principle of fairness under Article 4 of the Federal Sports Justice Code, a lesser but still punishable offence.

As a result, Okoye will be banned from playing between August 18, 2025, and October 19, 2025, forcing him to miss seven matches, including six in Serie A and one in the Coppa Italia.

In an official statement, Udinese expressed satisfaction that their player was cleared of any match-fixing wrongdoing, insisting they are “firmly convinced of Maduka’s proper conduct.”

The club also underlined its full support for the Nigerian international as he awaits the full reasons for the decision.

Okoye, who joined Udinese in 2023, had faced the possibility of a four-year ban if found guilty of sporting fraud.

Wage Disparity Against Women Must Stop – ICU

0

The Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU), Ghana, has called on businesses to put a stop  to wage disparities against women in the country as it perpetuates gender inequality, undermines women’s economic security, and hinders overall economic growth.

Speaking at the 6th National Women’s Quadrennial Delegate conference at Tema Industrial and Recreation Area, General Secretary, ICU, Brother Morgan Ayawine, said it is disheartening to acknowledge that in today’s modern age, women face discrimination in employment.

This, he mentioned, is as a result of a persistent misconception which suggests that women may not be reliable in the long term due to maternity and family responsibilities—an assumption that unfairly and unjustly undermines women’s capabilities and contributions.

“We therefore use this platform to strongly urge all employers who indulge in gender-based employment discrimination and wage disparity to desist immediately, and to recognize and respect the full and equal value of women in the workforce,” he mentioned.

He said women deserve equal pay for equal work, as enshrined in the principle of Equal Pay for Equal Work, which has been eloquently championed by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), and enshrined in Ghana’s Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), specifically under Section 68.

“Yet, in our part of the world, some employers continue to violate this principle—paying women less than their male counterparts for the same work. This unacceptable practice is not only unjust but an affront to the dignity and humanity of women,” he added.

Mr. Ayawine noted that ICU-Ghana, as a gender-friendly institution that upholds justice and equity for all, reaffirms its commitment to promoting laws and best practices that support the fair recruitment and retention of women in all sectors.

“We therefore use this platform to strongly urge all employers who indulge in gender-based employment discrimination and wage disparity to desist immediately, and to recognise and respect the full and equal value of women in the workforce,” he added.

He further called on stakeholders to support the swift ratification of the Affirmative Action Bill, recently passed by Ghana’s Parliament, as this crucial legislation will significantly advance the cause of women, who constitute more than half of Ghana’s population.

A five-member executive team was sworn in by the ICU Deputy General Secretary in Charge of Operations, Emmanuel Benimah, to control the affairs of the New ICU National Women Executives.

They include Sister Happy Aheto, Chairperson, Sister Mary Adwoa Appiah, Vice Chairperson, Sister Doreen Ayitey, Secretary, Sister Brightener Boateng, Assistant Secretary, and Emelia Etroo as Executive Member.

Supreme Court quashes order to restore Nii Tackie Adama Latse II onto national register

0

The Supreme Court has quashed the order directed at the National House of Chiefs in Kumasi to restore Nii Tackie Adama Latse II onto the national register of chiefs as the Ga Mantse.

In a ruling Wednesday [July 23, 2025], a five-member panel of the apex court which had Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang as its president, was of the view that before making the order to restore Nii Latse II’s name onto the register, the Kumasi High Court judge, Justice Frederick Tetteh, did not give Nii Tackie Teiko a notice and hearing, thereby violating the rule of natural justice.

This comes after the apex court upheld a certiorari application filed by counsel for the Nii Tackie Tsuru, Professor Peter A. Atupare.

The court said that the High Court did not afford Nii Tackie Tsuru  his constitutional right to be heard in proceedings that directly affected his rights and interests as Ga Mantse.

Appeal

On June 12, 2025, the Court of Appeal ordered the National House of Chiefs to restore Nii Adama Latse onto the national register of chiefs as the Ga Mantse (the Paramount Chief of the Ga State) within 14 days.

That was after it upheld a High Court ruling, which first gave the order in November 2021.

In its unanimous decision, the three-member panel of the second-highest court of the land held that the National House of Chiefs removed Nii Adama Latse’s name from the register without any evidence that he had been validly destooled, a prerequisite for removing a chief’s name from the national register.

“The National House of Chiefs, Kumasi, removed the name of Nii Latse II from the national register without any evidence that he was dead, had been deposed or had abdicated or that an adjudicatory body had ordered the removal of his name.

“The decision of National House of Chiefs, Kumasi was ultra vires, constituted an abuse of power and amounted to a wrong exercise of discretion, thereby constituting an error of law,” the three-member panel of the court ruled when it dismissed the National House of Chiefs, Kumasi’s appeal against the November 2021 High Court decision.

Background

In April 2021, Nii Adama Latse learnt that his name had been expunged from the National Register.

To ascertain his status, counsel for Nii Adama Latse applied for a search with the National House of Chiefs, Kumasi, which confirmed that, indeed, his name had been expunged.

He then instructed his lawyer to write a letter of objection, demanding the restoration of his name in the register by April 27, 2021, but the National House of Chiefs, Kumasi, refused.

Following this, Nii Adama Latse, whose name was originally part of the register after submitting his enstoolment form from the Ga Traditional Council, filed a motion in a form of a judicial review at the High Court in Kumasi, seeking an order directed at the National House of Chiefs, Kumasi to restore his name onto the register as the Ga Mantse.

This relief was granted by the High Court, but unsatisfied with the ruling, the National House of Chiefs, Kumasi, went to the Court of Appeal to challenge the High Court ruling, which ordered the restoration of Nii Adama Latse’s name in the register.

Their main argument was that the High Court was not the proper forum to seek a judicial review; hence, it was not clothed with the jurisdiction to hear the matter.

It is this appeal that has been dismissed by the Court of Appeal, affirming the High Court’s order for Nii Adama Latse’s name to be restored.

Statement

By a press statement issued on June 13, 2025, the Office of King Tackie Teiko Tsuru refuted claims that the ruling confers chieftaincy legitimacy on Nii Adama Latse.

It emphasised that the judiciary did not have jurisdiction to determine matters affecting chieftaincy titles, which were the exclusive purview of the Judicial Committees of the Traditional Councils and the Regional and National Houses of Chiefs.

“The Court of Appeal did not and could not declare Nii Adama Latse II as Ga Mantse,” the statement read.

“The court merely upheld an administrative order — specifically, an order of mandamus compelling the National House of Chiefs to follow due legal process in maintaining or removing names from the National Register,” it said, adding that the substantive matter regarding who rightfully occupies the Ga Mantse Stool remains unresolved and is still pending before the Judicial Committee of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs.

The statement further called on the media and the public to treat with caution the widespread interpretations of the ruling.

“We urge all well-meaning GaDangme citizens and residents of the Ga State to remain calm and not be swayed by misinformation,” the statement said.

As a way of preventing the usage and peddling of illicit drugs in the city, especially within the jurisdiction of the Manhyia Divisional Police Command, the police conducted a swoop.

The police operation took place at Asebi, Asokore Mampong and Akwatia Line, and it also led to the retrieval of some substances, which the police suspect to be narcotics.

“Upon information received to the effect that some youth usually converge at some places within the AOR to deal in illicit drugs, the Manhyia Divisional Headquarters embarked on swoops at these areas on 17/07/25 between the hours of 1800 and 2200.

“Areas visited were Asebi, Asokore Mampong and Akwatia Line. Sixteen (16) suspects were arrested together with substances suspected to be narcotic drugs,” part of the police report said.

The report, which has been sighted by the paper, also said “Suspects are detained and would be profiled and screened, and those linked to the exhibits will be prosecuted.”

In a Statement of Claim filed at an Accra High Court, and sighted by Citi News on Wednesday July 23, the plaintiff, through his lawyers Sustineri Attorneys PRUC, seeks several reliefs including a declaration that the statements made in the TikTok video constitute defamation, general and exemplary damages to the tune of GHS 10 million, and a perpetual injunction to restrain the defendant from making further defamatory publications.

The Allegations

The defamatory statements, made in Asante Twi and translated into English for the court, accuse Mr. Gyamfi of extramarital affairs and lavish spending on unnamed female students at the University of Ghana.

The Mandela Washington Fellows Northern Region Chapter, has marked the Mandela Day at the Tamale Central Prison.

As part of the Nelson Mandela Day, the chapter made a donation to the prison, providing essential items such as medicines, mattresses, a blood pressure machine, a blood glucose monitor, an infrared thermometer, and other medical supplies.

In addition to the donation, the Mandela Washington Fellows spent time painting the infirmary at the Tamale Central Prison.

In an interview with DAILY GUIDE, Blessilla Nana-Afoe Aya Kandoh, a 2024Mandela Washington Fellow, stated that they collaborated with prison officials to conduct a health education session on stress management for the officers.

“Stress can affect their performance and how they support the inmates. As the first point of contact, maintaining a sound mind among the officers translates to the well-being of the inmates,” she noted.

Sylvia Phaphali Adzitey, a Mandela Washington Fellow for 2023, noted that their activities positively impacted both the inmates and the officers and that the decision to paint the infirmary was as a result of an assessment that identified the need to improve the facility.

“We wanted to ensure that if any inmate or officer falls ill, they will be cared for in a decent environment that promotes quicker recovery. Health is a basic human right, and being imprisoned should not deny nobody of that right,” she stated.

Madam Adzitey called on other organisations, institutions, and individuals to support the Tamale Central Prison.

“We have witnessed many needs here, and there is a pressing demand for more support. I urge other organisations and institutions looking to make an impact to consider assisting the Tamale Central Prison, as they require hospital beds, essential medicines, and equipment among others,” she stated.

Public Relations Officer of the Tamale Central Prison, Supt. David Kwame Afatsawu, the thanked the Mandela Washington Fellows Northern Region Chapter for their donation and for painting the infirmary.

He encouraged other organisations to follow the example set by the Mandela Washington Fellows and extend their support to the Tamale Central Prison.

202 trafficked Ghanaians rescued, repatriated from Nigeria – Foreign Minister

Featured

Beatrice Laryea

1 minute read

A total of 202 Ghanaian nationals who fell victim to human trafficking and a scam syndicate operating in Nigeria have been rescued and repatriated, according to Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, July 23, the Minister revealed that the victims were linked to operations believed to be run by the Q-Net group, a notorious recruitment and trafficking network.

“Our missions in Nigeria have successfully repatriated 202 Ghanaians—78 through the Abuja Mission and 124 via the Lagos Mission,” Mr Ablakwa said.

He further raised concerns about an estimated 500 Ghanaian nationals who are reportedly being held against their will in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. Diplomatic efforts are currently underway to identify and safely bring them back home.

According to the Minister, investigations have revealed that some of the ringleaders behind the Q-Net operations in Côte d’Ivoire are themselves Ghanaians—former victims of the same scam—who are now exploiting others in a desperate attempt to recover their personal losses.

“The traffickers lure unsuspecting compatriots under the pretext of facilitating their travel to France or other European countries for lucrative job opportunities. Victims are first brought to supposed transit countries like Nigeria or Côte d’Ivoire, where the scammers claim visa processing is quicker than in Ghana,” he explained.

The minister assured Parliament that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with national and international security agencies, is intensifying efforts to dismantle the trafficking networks and implement lasting solutions to what he described as a “deeply troubling trend.”

Three times Shatta Wale has gone ‘ballistic’ over death prophecies

0

Shatta Wale has been a subject of death prophecies over the years Shatta Wale has been a subject of death prophecies over the years

Being one of the biggest names in Ghana, dancehall artiste, Charles Nii Armah Mensah, also known as Shatta Wale, is no stranger to prophecies concerning his music, personal life, and death.

Since he burst onto the limelight in 2012, the self-acclaimed ‘Dancehall King’ has been the subject of one prophecy or another.

But such prophecies do not go down well with the artiste, who has always come out to lambast such prophecies and the prophets who make them.

This GhanaWeb article will take a look at some of Shatta Wale’s outbursts over death prophecies targeted at him.

1. Burn down churches

Following the sudden and shocking death of popular dancehall musician, Ebony, in a ghastly motor accident in February 2018, some prophets claiming to predict which big star was next, popped up.

A Kumasi-based prophet, identified as Prophet EK Mensah of the Christ Vision Prayer Ministry, predicted that Shatta Wale would pass away in an accident in July of that same year – 2018.

An infuriated Shatta Wale came on social media to call out the prophet, declaring that he would burn down churches of such prophets who make such predictions.

2. The shooting and the death:

Perhaps, one of the biggest incidents in the entertainment industry happened after the Founder and Leader of New Life Kingdom Chapel International, Stephen Akwasi, aka Jesus Ahuofe, prophesied that Shatta Wale would be shot.

Initially, the artiste seemed light-hearted about it, making jokes such as he would wear a bulletproof vest for protection.

However, in October 2021, the country was thrown into a frenzy after rumours surfaced that Shatta Wale had been shot.

Fans waited with bated breaths while journalists and police officers looked for answers, only for it to all be fake.

Everyone involved, including the pastor himself and Shatta Wale, were arrested.

Charges were later filed, and Shatta Wale was detained at Ankaful Prison for a week before being granted bail.

3. Another shooting prophecy

In July 2025, another pastor, identified as Reverend Daniel Yaw Donkoh, claimed he had seen a vision in which the artiste was shot and killed after escaping an earlier attempt on his life.

This prophecy quickly drew public attention and sparked backlash, especially from Shatta Wale himself, who demanded that the police arrest Rev Donkoh within a week and warned of personal action if nothing was done.

Shatta Wale also used the moment to criticise former Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, accusing him of allowing such harmful prophecies to go unchecked during his tenure.

Apologise and consider COVID Levy for Ghana Medical Trust Fund financing – Dr Afriye

0

Ranking Member of the Health Committee of Parliament, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye Ranking Member of the Health Committee of Parliament, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye

The Ranking Member of the Health Committee of Parliament, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye has called on the John Mahama government to apologise for its unfulfilled promise to repeal the COVID Levy and consider redirecting the levy to finance the newly passed Ghana Medical Trust Fund Bill, 2025, popularly known as the MahamaCares Programme.

Speaking on behalf of the Minority at a press conference on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, Dr. Afriye raised concerns about the bill’s financing model and its potential to undermine the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), urging the government to provide clarity and adopt sustainable funding options.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund Bill, passed by Parliament on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, under a certificate of urgency, aims to establish a fund to support specialized medical care for chronic and life-threatening conditions such as cancer, stroke, kidney failure, and diabetes.

However, the Minority strongly opposes Clause 3A of the bill, which allocates 20% of NHIA funds to the Trust, arguing that this could weaken the NHIA’s ability to provide primary healthcare to Ghanaians.

“We strongly oppose the 20% allocation from the NHIA to the Trust,” Dr. Afriye stated, describing the funding model as unsustainable and detrimental to the NHIA’s operations.

Instead, he proposed that the government retain the COVID Levy, which the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) had pledged to repeal before the 2024 elections.

“It is not unreasonable for the government to acknowledge changing circumstances and retain the levy to support the Trust’s work,” he said.

“There’s nothing wrong with the government admitting it made a promise at a different time and, given the current situation, making a case to keep the levy to improve the health of Ghanaians,” he added.

Dr. Afriye emphasized that redirecting the COVID Levy would provide a more sustainable financing option for the Trust, ensuring it does not compete with or weaken the NHIA.

“This is not about politics or ego—it’s about improving healthcare for Ghanaians,” he stated.

Beyond financing, the Minority raised concerns about the lack of clarity in the Trust’s operations, particularly its potential overlap with NHIA services. Dr. Afriye questioned at what point NHIA care for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) would end and Trust care would begin, warning that this ambiguity could confuse or delay patients seeking treatment.

He highlighted a provision requiring patients to apply for specialist care, a process that takes approximately two weeks, noting that the gap in care during this period “poses a risk to Ghanaians’ health.”

Dr. Afriye stressed that Ghanaians need clear guidance on where to seek care under the NHIA and where to seek care under the Trust to avoid confusion and ensure efficient healthcare delivery.

Additionally, Dr. Afriye sought clarity on the Trust’s alignment with Agenda 111, the erstwhile government’s initiative to build 111 hospitals nationwide.

He questioned whether some Agenda 111 projects would be converted into specialist hospitals and, if so, which diseases these facilities would address. “Without this clarity, there’s a risk of overlap with the NHIA,” he cautioned, urging the government to specify the roles of these facilities to enhance healthcare delivery.

The MahamaCares Programme, launched by President John Dramani Mahama on April 29, 2025, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre, has received support, including a GH¢2.2 million donation in pharmaceutical products from the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Ghana (PMAG) and a month’s salary contribution from the Military High Command.

The initiative aims to provide financial assistance for NCDs not fully covered by the NHIA. However, critics have warned that the Trust risks duplicating NHIA functions, with some describing the bill as “needless.”

The Ghana Chamber of Mines is urging the government to review its decision to raise the Growth and Sustainability Levy from 1% to 3% ahead of the upcoming mid-year budget presentation.

The Chamber explained that the increased rate poses challenges for some mining firms, particularly smaller companies that earn significantly less than the larger players in the industry.

At a press conference held in Accra on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, the Chamber’s CEO, Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, stated that lowering the levy would help stabilise the sector and encourage further investment.

He expressed optimism that the government would reconsider the levy in the mid-year budget.

“There have been conversations about the Growth and Sustainability Levy. Our hope is that it would be reduced in the mid-year budget,” he said.

Dr Ashigbey also noted that Ghana’s improving macroeconomic indicators are largely supported by the mining sector.

“The macro-economy is pointing in the right direction. The strength of the Cedi currently is predominantly based on gold,” he added.

He urged the government to recognise the vital role of the mining sector in the national economy and emphasised the importance of making decisions that support the industry’s long-term sustainability.

The Spanish champions confirmed the deal in a statement, announcing Rashford will stay until June 30, 2026, with the chance to make the move permanent.

But while Rashford has signed, the club still faces LaLiga’s strict financial controls before he can be officially registered.

Barcelona, who continue to battle tight spending limits, must offload players or boost revenue to clear space for their new signing before the end of August.

Still, the Catalans remain confident they’ll get it done, just as they have with similar challenges in recent windows.

Rashford had made no secret of his dream to play for Barcelona, expressing his admiration for talents like Lamine Yamal and describing his wish “to play with the best.”

After a loan spell at Aston Villa, the 27-year-old is ready for a fresh start in Spain under new head coach Hansi Flick, who personally approved the deal after talks with Rashford.

You wouldn’t dare come to Ghana without protection – Titus Glover warns Kevin Taylor

0

Titus Glover has accused US-based Ghanaian commentator Kevin Taylor of abusing political cover to visit Ghana while evading accountability.

“Without the national security operatives, can he come to Ghana?

We can now track excavators before they arrive in Ghana – Armah Kofi Buah

0

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emanuel Armah Kofi Buah says the ministry now has the capacity to track earth-moving equipment such as excavators even before they enter Ghana’s ports.

During his presentation at the Government Accountability Series held at the Jubilee House, the minister, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, indicated that a new digital tracking system has been introduced to monitor all imported excavators from the point of entry into the country.

The initiative, developed in partnership with the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Finance, the Ghana Revenue Authority (Customs Division), and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, aims to clamp down on the use of unregistered and illegal machinery in mining operations across the country.

The Government Accountability Series is an initiative by the Ministry of Information in collaboration with key civil society groups to ensure that leaders remain answerable to the people they serve.

Mr. Kofi Buah explained that so far, over 1,200 excavators have been impounded at the ports, pending proper validation and clearance.

He said this is part of efforts to sanitize the mining sector and prevent illegal mining activities, popularly known as “galamsey”.

He further noted that the Minerals Commission is now using real-time geo-fencing and tracking technology to monitor equipment movement across mining areas.

He revealed that a pilot programme involving 191 excavators is currently underway at a dedicated control room within the commission.

“This is a very innovative move. We are now able to know when an excavator is shipped, when it lands, and where it is headed. We will no longer allow the free movement of mining machinery without proper monitoring,” the minister said.

He pointed out that the new system forms part of a broader national plan to enforce mandatory registration and tracking of all mining and heavy-duty equipment used in the country.

Mr. Buah assured the public that government remains committed to cleaning up the mining sector and protecting Ghana’s forests and water bodies from destruction caused by illegal mining.

Shatta Wale fires back at prophet over death prophecy

Dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has hit back at a self-styled prophet who claimed to have seen a vision of him being fatally shot by gunmen.

According to the prophet, the vision involved about ten armed men pursuing Shatta Wale in an attempt to take his life. Though the musician reportedly escaped the initial attack, the prophecy further alleged that he was later ambushed and killed by three different assailants.

The prophet added that after escaping the first attack, Shatta Wale was seen on social media thanking God before the second, fatal encounter.

In a fiery response shared online, Shatta Wale criticised the prophet and other so-called men of God who, he claimed, exploit fear to manipulate the public and chase attention for personal gain.

He expressed outrage over what he described as a pattern of false prophecies targeting celebrities to go viral and profit off public anxiety.

Shatta Wale also issued a stern warning to the Ghana Police Service, demanding the arrest of the prophet within a week.

He cautioned that if the matter is not addressed by law, his next move would serve as a “lesson to the country.”

This incident comes amid increasing concern over controversial prophecies involving the lives of public figures. The Ghana Police Service has, in recent years, warned religious leaders against issuing unverified death prophecies that could incite panic or disturb public peace.

US must rise above interests to end the genocide in Gaza – Palestine Chief Justice

0

By Patrick Ofoe Nudzi

Accra, July 22, GNA – The United States must rise above its political interest to end the genocide being committed by Israel in Gaza, Mr Mahmoud Sedqi Abdalrahman Alhabbash, Chief Justice, the State of Palestine, has stated.

He said the solution to Israel’s annihilation of the people of Gaza and Palestine lies in the hands of the US by calling Israel to a cease fire as Washington did in the 12-day Israel-Iran war.

Mr Abdalrahman Alhabbash, who is also the Advisor to the President of the State of Palestine on Religious Affairs and Peace Relations, said this during a media briefing at the Palestinian Embassy in Accra, following his visit with an entourage’s to Ghana.

He said the Palestinians had called for peace and a two-state solution but the Israeli government had refused and defied all international laws and protocols with its bombardments, destructions and takeover of the Palestinian areas in the Gaza Strip, West Bank and East Jerusalem.

“The decision to stop this genocide is in the White House. If the Americans have the courage to do so, this genocide could be stopped immediately. Only a call from the White House to Mr Netanyahu will end it. He will have no choice to continue and so once the Americans decide to stop this genocide, it will be stopped,” the Chief Justice said.

He said the Israeli aggression and genocide had caused closed to eight million Palestinians to be refugees outside Palestine and about four million of them had also become refugees inside Palestine.

Mr Abdalrahman Alhabbash said more than 60,000 people had been killed since October 2023, over 100,000 injured and more than 70 per cent of the houses and the buildings, including hospitals, schools, mosques and churches in the Gaza Strip had been destroyed.

“More than two million Gazans right now are suffering hunger because of the Israeli aggression, because Israel prevents humanitarian aid from entering Gaza. I am a Gazan. I lost my house, my brother and my sister. More than 80 people from my family have been killed by the Israelis,” he said.

The Chief Justice said all indications had shown that the Israel government did not want a real peace with the Palestinians but kept talking about peace, adding that which peace could be achieved when they refused to sit at the negotiation table.

“We are not against Jews or against Judaism but against occupation, we are against colonialism. They must recognise our rights, our State and our rights to have our own State. Once the Israeli government achieves a peace agreement with Palestinian people, we will live together in peace,” he added.

Mr Abdalrahman Alhabbash said some priorities they had been seeking included stopping the Israeli aggression against Gaza, protecting the existence of the Palestinians in Gaza Strip and preventing the Israelis from evacuating Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to outside Palestine and allowing humanitarian aid to get to hungry people inside Gaza Strip.

Mr Kwesi Pratt Jnr., Managing Editor, Insight Newspaper and General Secretary, Socialist Movement of Ghana, who was at the briefing, said, the genocide in Gaza showed the hypocrisy of the Western nations as they refused to act to preserve lives and dignity of the Palestinian people.

“In the midst of this genocide they continue to supply weapons and diplomatic support to the Israeli regime which has abandoned all sense of dignity and any sense of propriety. We pledge to support and continue the resistance against the occupation, colonialism and the blatant theft of Palestinian resources,” he said

Mr Pratt Jr., said: “One of the biggest problems in Palestine today is that even customs duties which are due the Palestinian Authority, is being stolen by the Israeli administration and no government, no people of any moral standing can continue to collaborate with this genocidal regime.”

Lands Ministry establishes anti-galamsey secretariat

0

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has announced the establishment of the National Anti-illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) to serve as the central command for Ghana’s renewed fight against illegal mining, also known as galamsey.

Speaking during a sectoral update on Wednesday, July 23, he said the move forms part of a broader government strategy to tackle the persistent threat of illegal small-scale mining and its destructive impact on water bodies, forest reserves, and the environment.

“To coordinate the efforts of the military, police, and other security agencies, the Ministry has established the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) as the operational nerve-centre for Ghana’s fight against illegal small-scale mining,” he stated.

The Minister noted that NAIMOS will act as a unified operational hub, integrating security, environmental, and legal responses under one coordinated framework to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of anti-galamsey operations.

As part of its mandate, the Secretariat is working closely with key institutions including the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Finance (GRA-Customs Division), and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority to track the entry of excavators and other earth-moving equipment into the country.

“In collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Finance (GRA-Customs Division), and the Ports and Harbours Authority, we have initiated a proactive tracking of all imports of excavators and earth-moving equipment from the point of entry,” he added.

Ghana grapples with severe shortage of agriculture extension officers

0

By Jibril Abdul Mumuni

Accra, July 22, GNA – Ghana’s agriculture sector is facing shortage of extension officers, with each officer currently serving an average of 1500 farmers lower than the standard of 500.

The alarming deficit was disclosed by Mr. Eric Opoku, Minister of Food and Agriculture, during the presentation of 150 motorbikes to extension officers to improve mobility and service delivery.

“ Our records show that one extension officer in Ghana caters to about 1,500 farmers, making it nearly impossible to provide effective training and support. This gap severely limits the adoption of modern farming techniques and keeps productivity low,” he said.

He noted that agriculture extension played a crucial role in bridging the gap between research institutions and farmers by disseminating knowledge on improved seeds, soil management, pest control and post-harvest practices.
However, their limited numbers have left thousands of farmers without vital guidance.

“ Without sufficient extension services, even the best agriculture policies and research breakthroughs will fail to reach smallholder farmers,” he said.

The Minister, stated that this situation contributed to Ghana’s reliance on $2 billion worth of food imports annually, despite having fertile land and favourable weather.

Mr. Opoku disclosed that the Ministry was recruiting additional Feed Ghana Coordinators to support overburdened extension officers.

He said the newly procured motorbikes will also enhance mobility enabling officers to reach remote farming communities regularly.

“These motorbikes will help our officers move from farm to farm, ensuring no farmers is left behind. Thirty of them are specially designed for female extension officers to promote inclusivity.

The Minister also said his outfit had also registered 42, 822 farmer cooperatives nationwide to streamline extension services.

This, he noted, would be implemented by grouping farmers to crop type and location ensuring that officers conducted training sessions and distributed inputs efficiently.

45-year-old Venus Williams becomes second-oldest to win WTA singles match

Venus Williams became the second oldest player to win a WTA singles match Venus Williams became the second oldest player to win a WTA singles match

At 45 years old, Venus Williams could be forgiven for slipping quietly into tennis retirement, content with a trophy cabinet that glitters with seven Grand Slam singles titles, 14 doubles majors alongside her sister Serena, and a place in the sport’s folklore.

But on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, in Washington, D.C, the American legend reminded the world that greatness rarely fades quietly.

Under the lights at the DC Open, Williams produced a vintage display of power and poise to beat 23-year-old Peyton Stearns 6-3, 6-4, becoming the second-oldest woman this century to win a singles match on the WTA Tour.

The milestone puts her in rare company, trailing only Martina Navratilova, who famously won a first-round match at Wimbledon in 2004 at age 47.

It was more than just a win; it was a statement. Williams, who hadn’t played a singles match since falling to Diana Shnaider in Miami back in March 2025, looked sharp despite months away from the main stage.

Facing Stearns, the world No. 35, she shook off an early break to love in her first service game before roaring back behind her trademark aggressive serving and fearless returns.

“You know, it’s the first step, and the first match is always extremely difficult. “I know I have the ability to win, but it’s all about actually winning. So this is the best result, to play a good match and win,” she said.

Williams’ return to competition has been anything but quiet this week.

A day earlier, she paired up with 22-year-old American Hailey Baptiste for her first doubles match in almost three years, notching another victory to remind fans that her fight is far from over.

Until this week, Williams had even been marked as “inactive” on the WTA Tour.

Up next, Williams faces Poland’s world No. 24 Magdalena Fręch in the round of 16 on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

Her doubles adventure continues on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, against American Taylor Townsend and China’s Zhang Shuai.

Declare road crashes a public health emergency – CUTS urges gov’t

0

CUTS International has urged the Government to declare road crashes a public health emergency.

This follows statistical data released by the National Road Safety Authority, which indicates that, on average, eight people died daily from January to June 2025 due to road crashes.

Addressing the press in Accra on Wednesday, July 23, the West African Regional Director of CUTS International, Appiah Adomako Kusi, stated that “If we do not act now, we are complicit in the next tragedy.

CUTS stands ready to support government through research, advocacy, and community engagement.

“But we need political will, coordination, and urgency. No One will work at night if the roads are death traps. Road safety is as important to a 24-hour economy as power and internet access”.

Supporting the call with regional data, the report shows that the Ashanti Region recorded the highest number of incidents within the first half of 2025, totalling 2,210. This was closely followed by the Greater Accra Region with 2,205 cases, and the Eastern Region with 1,032 incidents.

In terms of fatalities by sex, June 2025 saw 187 (79%) males and 50 (21%) females killed, revealing a stark ratio of 1:4, where for every one female killed, four males lost their lives. This pattern reflects a consistent trend over time.

Moreover, cumulative figures from January to June 2025 indicate that 1,179 (78%) males and 325 (22%) females were killed, underscoring the persistent gender disparity in road traffic fatalities.
