Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has projected a further decline in inflation rates Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has projected a further decline in inflation rates

Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has projected a drop in Ghana’s inflation rate to 8% plus or minus (±) 2% within the year, down from the current 23.1%, indicating a 13% to 15% reduction in headline inflation.

He made this known during an X Space discussion on Sunday, March 9, 2024, emphasising the government’s commitment to stabilising the economy and addressing the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

“There is a significant cost-of-living crisis, and it is getting worse. We need to take steps to reverse this trend. Some of the measures include stabilising and consolidating the economy through fiscal discipline to ensure economic stability. Our goal is to bring inflation down to 8% plus or minus ( ±) 2% by the end of the year,” he said.

Inflation rate for February 2025 has declined slightly to 23.1% from the 23.5% recorded in January, largely driven mainly by food inflation.

Government Statistician, Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim, announcing the new inflation rate, attributed the decline to a consistent drop in food inflation over the past four months.

Despite the decline, he pointed out that the February annual inflation rate was still the third-highest recorded in the last 10 months.

Minister assures major road upgrades for Upper East

0

The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has expressed his unwavering commitment to improving the road network within the region, recognising its critical role in facilitating economic activities, trade, and the overall development of communities.

Speaking to the media after a series of site inspections, Mr. Atanga stated that road infrastructure remains a top priority for his administration, adding that he will do everything within his power to ensure that ongoing and planned road projects are executed efficiently.

According to the minister, his administration will actively engage with the Minister for Roads and Highways as well as other relevant agencies to secure the necessary funding and support for the construction and rehabilitation of key road networks in the Upper East Region.

The government, he noted, is aware of the immense challenges posed by poor road conditions, particularly in rural communities, and is determined to address these concerns to improve the livelihoods of residents.

As part of his commitment to ensuring that road projects progress as planned, Mr. Atanga embarked on an extensive tour of several towns and communities within the region, including Apowongo, Dua, Kantia, Adaboya, Bongo, and Sirigu.

The tour allowed the minister to assess firsthand the level of work being done, interact with contractors, and engage local leaders and residents on their concerns regarding road infrastructure.

During his visit, the minister urged contractors working on various road projects in these areas to expedite their execution and ensure they meet completion deadlines.

He underscored the importance of timely project completion, stressing that delays in road construction could significantly impact trade, transportation, and access to essential services, including healthcare and education.

While addressing the media, Mr. Atanga affirmed that both his administration and the government of President John Dramani Mahama remain resolute in their commitment to bringing much-needed development to the people of the Upper East Region.

“My administration and that of President John Dramani Mahama remains committed to bringing relief to the many Ghanaians who believed in us and voted massively for the NDC and this includes improving road infrastructure across the Upper East Region.

“I will therefore urge all contractors working on projects in the region to expedite their work and meet completion deadlines. Proper road network has many positives including smooth trade and economic facilitation.”

Ghana Airways and Ethiopian Airlines started the same year,Ethiopian Airlines has 100s of planes,Ghana Airways is dead,why?-Dr. Tony Aidoo.

Ghana Airways, once the national pride of Ghana, has a fascinating yet sorrowful story. Founded on July 4, 1958, the same year as Ethiopian Airlines, Ghana Airways started strong with a fleet of aircraft and international routes. However, while Ethiopian Airlines has grown to own hundreds of planes, Ghana Airways ceased operations in 2005.

Dr. Tony Aidoo, a former Ghana Ambassador to the Netherlands, raised a crucial question: why did Ghana Airways fail while Ethiopian Airlines thrived? This question sparked a national economic dialogue, prompting Ghanaians to reflect on the country’s economic decisions and management.

Ghana Airways’ early years were marked by significant growth, with the airline operating flights to various destinations in Africa, Europe, and North America. The airline’s fleet included modern aircraft like the Boeing 707, McDonnell Douglas DC-10, and Airbus A330 .

However, despite its promising start, Ghana Airways began to face significant challenges. The airline’s management and financial struggles led to a decline in services, causing passengers to lose trust in the airline.

One major factor contributing to Ghana Airways’ downfall was its significant debt. By 2002, the airline owed around $160 million, which led to a series of financial crises . The Ghanaian government’s attempts to revive the airline, including a partnership with Nationwide Airlines, ultimately failed.

In contrast, Ethiopian Airlines has continued to grow and expand its operations. The airline’s success can be attributed to effective management, strategic partnerships, and significant investments in modern aircraft and infrastructure.

The demise of Ghana Airways serves as a cautionary tale for Ghana’s economic management. Dr. Tony Aidoo’s question highlights the need for Ghanaians to critically examine the country’s economic decisions and learn from past mistakes.

Ghana’s economic dialogue should focus on identifying the root causes of Ghana Airways’ failure and implementing strategies to prevent similar collapses in the future. This includes promoting transparency, accountability, and effective management in state-owned enterprises.

The story of Ghana Airways also underscores the importance of regional cooperation and learning from neighbors. Ethiopian Airlines’ success offers valuable lessons for Ghana and other African countries seeking to develop their aviation industries.

In recent years, there have been efforts to revive Ghana’s aviation industry, including plans to re-launch Ghana Airways. However, these efforts require careful planning, strategic partnerships, and a commitment to transparency and accountability.

As Ghanaians continue to reflect on the national economic dialogue, it is essential to prioritize the development of a robust and sustainable aviation industry. This includes investing in modern infrastructure, promoting regional cooperation, and learning from the successes and failures of other African countries.

The national economic dialogue should also focus on promoting entrepreneurship, innovation, and private sector development. By creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, Ghana can unlock its economic potential and reduce its reliance on foreign aid.

In conclusion, the story of Ghana Airways serves as a reminder of the importance of effective economic management, transparency, and accountability. As Ghanaians continue to reflect on the national economic dialogue, it is essential to prioritize the development of a robust and sustainable economy that promotes entrepreneurship, innovation, and regional cooperation.

Ghana’s economic future depends on its ability to learn from past mistakes, adapt to changing global circumstances, and promote a culture of transparency and accountability. By doing so, Ghana can unlock its economic potential and become a beacon of hope for Africa.

The national economic dialogue should continue to focus on identifying solutions to Ghana’s economic challenges. This includes promoting fiscal discipline, reducing corruption, and investing in human capital development.

Ghana’s economic growth requires a commitment to transparency, accountability, and effective management. By promoting these values, Ghanaians can build a robust and sustainable economy that benefits all citizens.

In recent years, Ghana has made significant progress in promoting economic growth and development. However, there is still much work to be done to address the country’s economic challenges.

The national economic dialogue provides a valuable opportunity for Ghanaians to reflect on the country’s economic progress and challenges. By continuing to prioritize transparency, accountability, and effective management, Ghana can unlock its economic potential and become a leader in Africa.

Ghana’s economic future is bright, but it requires careful planning, strategic partnerships, and a commitment to transparency and accountability. By promoting these values, Ghanaians can build a robust and sustainable economy that benefits all citizens.

The story of Ghana Airways serves as a reminder of the importance of effective economic management and transparency. By learning from past mistakes, Ghanaians can build a better future for themselves and their country.

Prophet who led NDC executives to vow holding a sword slams party for neglecting him

Former Director of Elections for the NDC, Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah making his vow Former Director of Elections for the NDC, Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah making his vow

A prophet who appeared in a viral video ahead of the 2024 general elections, leading some executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in taking an oath while holding a sword, has heavily criticized the party for neglecting him.

In that sword-wielding video, the former Director of Elections for the NDC, Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, and other NDC officials were seen swearing allegiance to the party and pledging to protect it at all costs.

The video generated mixed reactions, with some members of the public expressing concerns that the content of the vow went too far.

In an interview on Neat FM, the prophet expressed his displeasure with the way the NDC had abandoned him, recounting how his life and that of his family were threatened after the video went viral.

“My life was in danger, and the lives of my family members were also at risk. The video, in which I led some NDC polling station executives and Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah to hold a sword and vow not to work against the party in 2024, put my life in jeopardy. I was on the National Security radar, and armed robbers came to my house looking for me, intending to kill me.

After the election victory, who in the NDC has called me to say, ‘Prophet, we have not forgotten about you—even if you are far away, we are coming over to thank you’? Who in the NDC doesn’t have my number? I can mention their names. Apart from Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, who sent a message saying they had not forgotten about me, no one else has reached out—but that is not enough. I have seen what they have done; I have seen the churches they have visited to thank pastors.

The NDC should not be so ungrateful to me. Do you know the number of people who are mocking me? My junior pastors, with whom I worked to provide spiritual direction for the NDC to win the election, are calling me all the time, thinking the party has given me money and I have refused to share it with them. A good worker deserves his wages.”

Walewale MP condemns alleged security brutalities during curfew hours

0

The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Abdul Kabiru Tiah Mahama, has accused security personnel in the area of extortion, human rights abuses, and unlawful home invasions during curfew hours.

He questioned the rationale behind the curfew and condemned the alleged misconduct of security forces, including unauthorized searches, looting, and brutality against residents.

Speaking to Citi News, Tiah Mahama criticized the excessive use of force, stressing that security operations must be conducted professionally and within the confines of the law.

He, therefore, called on the government to ensure accountability while urging residents to cooperate with security personnel to maintain peace in Walewale.

“The conduct of the security personnel on the ground gives us rooms to be concerned about the whole exercise being carried out by the personnel because the people are not so happy. Of course, you will not be happy where you have the military evading civilian space, that kind of uncertainty, anxiety, and if you like, fear and scare that that will cause.

“The personnel actions on the ground and the reports I am hearing are not encouraging. First and foremost, there are reported cases of the military persons going into the houses of people unannounced and then looting items from them. That is not the work of the security in that community. Their essence is to pick up miscreants, to pick up criminals. You don’t go looting property, you don’t go extorting money from residents. You don’t go vandalising power and properties of residents.”

Hearts brush aside Young Apostles  … charged for security breaches

0

Accra Hearts of Oak kept their Ghana Premier League title hopes alive when they recorded a 2-0 victory over visiting Young Apostles at the University of Ghana Stadium on Saturday.

Having been dumped out of the MTN FA Cup by lower division side, Golden Kick, via penalties, the Phobians showed their seriousness from the start, registering goals from a header from defender Michael Awuah Mensah and an own goal by Rahman Rulf Abdul.

Hearts, unbeaten in their last seven league games, were on the offensive for virtually the entire game, forcing their guest to do more defensive duties.

After squandering some fine opportunities in front of goal, the fans had something to cheer about when Awuah headed home a corner from Mohammed Hussein on 43 minutes.

They had other opportunities but Issah and Yussif Ramzy failed to find a target.

Three minutes into the second half, a cross from the right side was flicked on by Issah, coming off the foot of Abdul to beat goalkeeper Zulka Masawudu in post for Apostles for the second goal.

Emmanuel Fosu Kyei, Daniel Lomotey, and Mathias Van Amegbe came close to reducing the deficit for the visitors but their efforts were dealt with by goalkeeper Benjamin Asare.

The win and celebration aftermath, however, landed the Phobians in trouble for breaching match day safety protocols.

Hearts was charged with breaches of Article (8) of the GFA Enhanced Matchday Safety and Security Protocols, 2025 and Article 34 (6) (d) of the GFA Ghana Premier League Regulations, 2019, following the clash.

Hearts was cited to have allowed unaccredited persons, specifically its supporters to the Safe Zone to celebrate the win.

The action, according to the FA constitutes misconduct and brings the game into disrepute.

The Phobians have until tomorrow to respond to the charges.

John Mahama notes that Ghana may be able to end the quarrel in West Africa

0

During John Mahama’s visit to Mali, the Ghanaian president met with the president of Mali, Assimi Goita, to discuss the insecurities in West Africa.

He essentially stated that trust between the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) must be restored.

“We will do everything possible to restore this trust,” he said, as he spoke about the tensions that caused Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali to exit their original regional bloc, ECOWAS, to form a bloc of their own.

“I’m an old face because I have been president before, I’ve been chairman of ECOWAS before, but again, I’m a new face… and so Ghana is prepared to play the role of a bridge between our two group the ECOWAS and the AES,” Mahama stated to the press after a closed-door meeting with his Malian counterpart.

“Everybody knows the historic relations that have existed between Ghana and Mali since the period of our ex-presidents, Keita and Dr. Kwame Nkrumah… and so I came on a friendly visit, and also to thank President Goita for allowing Prime Minister Maiga to visit Ghana when I was being inaugurated as president,” he stated, as per a press release from Ghana’s presidency.

In light of the cooperation between both countries, the two leaders discussed restoring the Mali-Ghana cooperation committee, which was last met in 2011.

Additionally, the two presidents spoke about increasing bilateral trade, particularly by developing the southern corridor, which makes it easier for commodities to move between Ghana and Mali.

To make these exchanges more effective, the president of Ghana emphasized the need to streamline customs procedures and upgrade infrastructure.

The three military-led West African states of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso officially withdrew from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on January 29, 2025.

They revealed their intention to leave their long-standing regional organization a year ago, citing the bloc’s subservience to former colonial powers and inability to back their counterterrorism activities.

Furthermore, for a little more than a year, the AES has been attempting to eliminate any traces of Western influence from their country. This involves renaming monuments after colonial names and cutting military connections with France.

Fidelity Bank Ghana, the nation’s largest privately owned indigenous bank, has been crowned “Best Bank in Financial Inclusion in West Africa” at the prestigious 15th Africa Bank 4.0 Summit and Awards – West Africa, held at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra.

This significant accolade recognizes the bank’s pioneering efforts in expanding financial access to millions of previously unbanked and underbanked Ghanaians over the past decade.

“This award is a testament to the tireless efforts of our team and partners, particularly our agents, and the unflinching commitment we have shown to bridging the financial gap in Ghana over the years,” said Julian Opuni, Managing Director of Fidelity Bank Ghana. “We have always believed that banking should be inclusive.

“Our innovative products and strategic partnerships have not only expanded our customer base but have also driven economic growth by empowering individuals and communities. This award reinforces our commitment to support every Ghanaian’s financial journey—truly, we are here for your journey.”

The award follows a decade of groundbreaking initiatives, beginning with a stark realization: in 2011, a staggering 70% of the Ghanaian population was unbanked. Fidelity Bank, recognizing this critical gap, embarked on a transformative journey to bring banking services to the underserved.

“We understood that traditional banking models were failing to reach a significant portion of the population,” explained Dr. David Okyere, Head of Agency Banking at Fidelity Bank. “We needed to break down barriers and bring banking services to the people, rather than expecting people to come to the bank.”

In his remarks during the award ceremony, Dr. Okyere expressed gratitude to the CEO, the Board, and Management of Fidelity Bank for their unwavering support in achieving this milestone. He dedicated the award to the hardworking Inclusive and Agency Banking teams, whose dedication, commitment, and resilience have been instrumental in overcoming the challenges associated with driving financial inclusion.

This vision led to the development of the Smart Account, a revolutionary product requiring minimal documentation, and the establishment of a robust Agency Banking network, making banking services accessible in every corner of the country. Through partnerships with organizations like Ghana Post and Melcom, Fidelity Bank established a vast network of agent points of about 8,000 bringing banking closer to the people.

Overcoming initial skepticism and dispelling myths about banking accessibility, Fidelity Bank successfully onboarded over 1.5 million previously unbanked and underbanked individuals. The bank’s innovative approach, including the development of the Smart Account and the expansion of its Agency Banking network, has set a new standard for financial inclusion in Ghana.

Fidelity Bank remains committed to further expanding its financial inclusion initiatives. “Our journey is far from over,” Samuel Abbey Dodoo, Head of Inclusive Banking remarked. “We are determined to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible in inclusive banking. By leveraging technology, forging strategic partnerships, and investing in our Agents, we will ensure that every Ghanaian has the opportunity to access quality financial services, empowering them to build a brighter future.”

Looking ahead, Fidelity Bank remains committed to further enhancing its financial inclusion initiatives. The bank is exploring new avenues such as the introduction of the Smart Loan, a digital micro-loan requiring no collateral or documentation. Additionally, there are plans to explore micro-insurance options, further ensuring that every Ghanaian, regardless of their economic status, has access to comprehensive financial services.

Fidelity Bank is also expanding digital financial literacy programs, developing innovative products for underserved segments, and strengthening its partnerships to drive sustainable financial growth for all Ghanaians.

You had no business driving President Mahama

Outspoken media personality, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, has lambasted businessman Ibrahim Mahama, the brother of President John Mahama, for driving the president during his official duties.

According to Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, such an act is entirely inappropriate and unacceptable, adding that it should not be encouraged.

His comments follow the circulation of videos on social media showing Ibrahim Mahama driving the president during his visit to flood-stricken areas in the Volta Region.

Following the video’s circulation, some Ghanaians took to social media to express their disapproval of the act.

Commenting on his show, For The Records, monitored by GhanaWeb, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah stated that Ibrahim Mahama had no business driving the president.

“If you are a wealthy individual, stay in your space and enjoy your wealth. We know that, by all means, you will benefit from the government and exert some control, but let it not be so blatant. We don’t care—just let us have our peace. Take a step back. Does it align with any proper governance structure that the President of the Republic is visiting a place and his brother is the one driving him? Are you people okay? We have reduced our governance to the lowest level, and nobody sees anything wrong with it because it involves Ibrahim.

“The president has not fewer than three drivers. The practice has been that, ordinarily, the president’s driver is not even supposed to be driving him. But from Atta Mills through Mahama to Akufo-Addo, they have enrolled their private drivers into the service. If you think Ibrahim Mahama is the one who should be driving you, let us know and officially enroll him as your chauffeur. Then we can have official records stating that Ibrahim Mahama is the new chauffeur of the president. What is all this?” he queried.
