National Ambulance Service partners YEA to train 6,000 community medical first responders

0

The National Ambulance Service (NAS) and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) have signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to recruit 6,000 young Ghanaians as community medical first responders across the country.

At a brief ceremony held at the YEA headquarters in Accra, acting YEA Chief Executive Officer, Malik Basintale, announced that the initiative aims to create employment while enhancing emergency response capacity in communities nationwide.

Mr. Basintale also credited former NAS CEO, Dr. Ahmed Nuhu Zakariah, for playing a key role in bringing the initiative to fruition.

Speaking at the event, the acting CEO of NAS, Dr. George Kojo Owusu, stressed the importance of the partnership, noting that it comes at a time when the service requires additional manpower to improve emergency response times.

“This collaboration will help bridge the gap between the occurrence of emergencies and the arrival of ambulances, ultimately improving the continuum of care,” Dr. Owusu stated.

The training programme will feature 10 modules, including , , , and .

Instructional methods will combine classroom lectures, simulation-based learning, practical exercises, case studies, role-plays, and scenario drills to ensure trainees are fully prepared for real-life emergencies.

Ghana, Serbia to sign MoU on labour mobility to Serbia

Ghana and Serbia are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on labour mobility, allowing Ghanaian workers to tap into Serbia’s 100,000 work permit initiative this year, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has said.

He indicated that the agreement, which aimed to deepen people-to-people engagements and create economic opportunities, was expected to benefit thousands of Ghanaian youths across various sectors of the economy.

Mr Okudzeto expressed interest in ensuring that the country took full advantage of Serbia’s work permit programme as the second African country to have benefited from the programme after Serbia signed a similar labour mobility agreement with Egypt.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs was speaking to the media in Accra yesterday after a closed-door meeting with his counterpart from Serbia, Marko Đurić, who is on a three-day working visit to the country.

Strengthening bilateral relations

Mr Okudzeto, said the two countries through several agreements, were strengthening their bilateral relations focusing on lithium exploration, artificial intelligence, maritime security and defence cooperation.

He revealed that Ghana and Serbia had agreed to share technical expertise in lithium exploration.

“Serbia has 11 per cent of the world’s lithium deposits, and we have agreed on technical expertise sharing of knowledge so that we can work together on how we explore those lithium potentials,” he said.

Mr Okudzeto stated that the two countries would deepen their collaboration in artificial intelligence, with Serbia currently chairing the Global AI Initiative. This partnership, he said, also aligned with the government’s One Million Coders Programme and the One Billion Dollar Innovation Hub Initiative.

He added that the two countries had also discussed defence cooperation to strengthen defence ties between the two nations and also equip the Ghana Armed Forces to withstand the threat of terrorism that posed from the Sahel.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs also stated that the country would be offering some scholarship opportunities to Serbians to take up some courses, including African Sociology and African Studies at the University of Ghana.

He commended the government of Serbia for supporting Ghana’s maritime sector through the ongoing collaboration between the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) and Vlatacom Research and Development Institute of Serbia for the major upgrade of Ghana’s existing Vessel Traffic Management and Information System.

The new infrastructure, he said, when fully deployed would extend the reach of the Over the Horizon (OTH) Surveillance Technology along Ghana’s coastline significantly.

Opportunities

For his part, the Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marko Đurić, expressed optimism about the great opportunities to be exploited mutually by both nations.

He described the government’s 24-hour economy idea as an inspiring one which offered opportunities for Serbian and other businesses from Europe to connect with Ghanaian businesses.

Mr Đurić said the Serbian government “see Ghana as a key regional ally and partner, deeply rooted in historic friendship, but oriented towards contemporary and future cooperation”.

The Serbian Foreign Affairs Minister emphasised that his government also intended to extend its cooperation to agriculture, sports and defence, adding that he would meet with all the sector ministers during his three-day visit to Ghana.

He said that his government had offered 51 scholarships to Ghanaian students to further their studies in various fields in Serbia, and announced that 30 more scholarship slots would be awarded to Ghanaian students this year as part of the bilateral relations with Ghana.

Ablekuma North Violence: ‘You haven’t shown statesmanship’

Chairman Buga is a National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party Chairman Buga is a National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party

National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Massaudu Osman, widely known as Chairman Buga, has slammed President John Dramani Mahama for his silence on the violence that broke out during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

Thugs reportedly identified as members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) assaulted some NPP members including former Minister of Fisheries, Hawa Koomson and the party’s Deputy National Organiser.

Many people have condemned the violence and the President has been slammed over his loud silence.

Speaking in an interview on Iqra Radio, Chairman Buga opined that the President supports the assault by members of his party.

To him, President Mahama has failed to show “statesmanship”.

“It has been one week already and it is shocking that President Mahama has been quiet about it and has not condemned the violence.”

“I believe he supports the conduct of his party members that is why he is refusing to condemn it. By his silence on the violence, Mahama has not exhibited statesmanship,” Alhaji Massaudu said.

He continued; “Nana Addo condemned the Ayawaso West Wuogon’s violence and set up a committee and followed up to disband NPP’s vigilante group but Mahama supports the vigilante and thuggery of NDC, that is why he has remained silent about it.”

“But he has to know that being President of Ghana, he is supposed to be father for all, not father for only his party members…And he should also know that power is transient. One day, he will leave the seat just as all his predecessors did and he will be remembered for what he did.”

The ghost haunting Edwin Gyimah’s club hunt

0

Edwin Gyimah's latest attempts to secure a club continue to fall flat Edwin Gyimah’s latest attempts to secure a club continue to fall flat

The once-reliable Ghanaian defender cum midfielder, Edwin Gyimah finds himself in the shadows of his past as his latest attempts to secure a club continue to fall flat.

The 34-year-old former Ghana international has not featured in a competitive match since November 12, 2023, his final appearance for South African side Sekhukhune United. His exit from Babina Noko was marred by controversy, with whispers of internal issues surfacing around the time of the club’s CAF Confederation Cup campaign that same month.

Though details remain murky, what is clear is that Gyimah and Sekhukhune United parted ways a few months later under strained circumstances.

Since then, the veteran defender has been on an unfruitful search for a new home. Trials with South African clubs Marumo Gallants and Magesi failed to materialize into contracts, leaving Gyimah without a club as the 2025/26 season approaches.

Gyimah’s storied career in South Africa includes stints with SuperSport United, Mpumalanga Black Aces, Orlando Pirates, Bidvest Wits, and Black Leopards. However, reports of controversial exits, particularly at Pirates and Leopards, have cast long shadows over his professional prospects.

It now appears that the weight of these past allegations may be limiting his options, especially within South Africa, where clubs remain wary of his off-field reputation.

Gyimah’s name was reportedly presented to Zimbabwean giants Dynamos FC, a club with a storied past that includes a CAF Champions League final appearance in 1998.

Despite their urgent need for experience and defensive reinforcements, Dynamos officials opted to conduct a thorough background check. Following their findings, the Harare-based club decided against pursuing Gyimah, choosing instead to move forward with two other Ghanaian players: Mohammed Issaka and Felix Hammond.

As the opportunities dwindle, Edwin Gyimah’s career hangs in the balance haunted not by a lack of ability, but by a lingering reputation that continues to follow him from club to club.

Ghana’s Strategic Dilemma: Navigating the Fallout of Ukraine’s Alleged Involvement in Sahel Conflicts

0

The stability of West Africa faces complexities as diplomatic tensions escalate between Ukraine and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), comprising Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. This rupture stems from controversial statements made in August 2024 by Andriy Yusov, spokesperson for Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, regarding a lethal ambush in Mali’s Kidal region. Yusov acknowledged that ethnic Tuareg rebels received “necessary information” that enabled their successful attack against a convoy of Malian soldiers and Russian instructors —a confrontation that resulted in significant casualties according to rebel claims. The immediate diplomatic fallout saw Mali and Niger sever relations with Ukraine, followed by a joint AES petition to the UN Security Council condemning alleged Ukrainian interference in regional security matters.

Multiple independent reports suggest Ukrainian involvement extends beyond intelligence sharing.

French newspaper Le Monde documented that Ukrainian-manufactured drones provided “decisive support” during rebel offensives in northern Mali, with regional security analysts identifying distinctive Ukrainian markings on recovered drone remnants.

Malian military operations in mid-2025 reportedly uncovered phones containing images of Ukrainian security documents alongside drones bearing Ukrainian inscriptions in vehicles abandoned by militants after attacks in the Koulikoro region. These findings align with separate allegations from Sudanese military officials who documented identical Ukrainian drone models being deployed by armed groups against government forces, suggesting a concerning pattern of Ukrainian-manufactured military technology appearing in African conflict zones. While Kyiv consistently denies supplying weapons or direct operational support—dismissing allegations as “groundless” fabrications—the accumulation of physical evidence across multiple conflict theaters complicates these denials.

The geopolitical backdrop reveals a dangerous proxy dimension to Sahel conflicts. Since military coups in Mali (2020-2021), Burkina Faso (2022), and Niger (2023), these nations have dramatically pivoted from French partnerships to Russian security cooperation. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has pledged enhanced military collaboration, including specialized training, advanced equipment transfers, and support for establishing a joint AES military force. Concurrently, Ukraine has significantly expanded its diplomatic footprint across Africa, establishing eight new embassies since 2022 while conducting high-profile food aid initiatives like the 1,400 tonnes delivered to Malian refugees in Mauritania. This expansion occurs alongside documented Ukrainian special operations in Sudan against Russian-backed paramilitaries, indicating Kyiv’s strategic interest in countering Moscow’s influence beyond Europe.

Rebel spokespersons like Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane of the CSP-DPA have openly framed their struggle as part of a “global fight” against Russia while acknowledging unspecified international connections, including Ukrainians opposed to Wagner’s activities.

For Ghana, these developments present multidimensional threats requiring urgent policy consideration. The country shares a porous 600-kilometer border with Burkina Faso, where security has deteriorated markedly with increased militant activity near frontier regions. Security analysts warn that advanced drone technology allegedly proliferating to armed groups could eventually enable sophisticated cross-border attacks, fundamentally transforming regional threat dynamics. This concern is amplified by the AES countries’ withdrawal from ECOWAS in January 2025, which has critically weakened the regional security architecture. The fragmentation paralyzes initiatives like the Accra Initiative—designed specifically for collective security against extremism—just as cross-border threats intensify. Neighboring coastal states already experience violent spillover, with Benin and Togo reporting increased attacks claiming dozens of military casualties in 2024, establishing a worrying precedent for Ghana’s northern regions.

Ghana’s diplomatic position grows increasingly delicate as it navigates competing interests. Despite the serious allegations against Ukraine, Accra is actively pursuing drone technology cooperation with Kyiv to enhance its own border surveillance capabilities. Recent discussions between President John Mahama and Ukrainian leadership explored Ghana financing Ukrainian drone manufacturing specifically for security purposes, creating potential perception challenges as neighboring governments accuse Ukraine of arming insurgents. Furthermore, Ghana must balance its principled commitment to democratic governance against the AES states’ explicit rejection of Western partnerships and deepening alignment with Russia—a geopolitical shift that complicates regional cohesion on security strategy. Compounding these challenges, ACLED data recorded 7,620 conflict fatalities in the Sahel during just the first half of 2024, representing a 37% increase from 2022 levels, indicating rapidly escalating violence that shows no signs of containment.

The emerging situation requires Ghana to pursue nuanced diplomatic engagement while reinforcing domestic security capabilities. Rather than assigning blame for specific allegations, Ghanaian leadership should advocate for impartial international investigations into weapons proliferation while strengthening border surveillance through transparent, regulated technology partnerships.

Regional diplomacy must focus on rebuilding functional security coordination channels between ECOWAS and AES states despite political differences, acknowledging shared interests in containing violence and preventing external interference. As the Sahel increasingly becomes an arena for great power competition, Ghana’s stability may depend significantly on its ability to assert African agency in conflict resolution and resist the region’s transformation into a proxy battlefield where local populations bear the ultimate cost of geopolitical rivalries. The preservation of Ghana’s democratic achievements and economic development hinges on navigating these complex pressures without becoming entangled in conflicts that fundamentally threaten West Africa’s collective security architecture.

8 key findings from the Deloitte audit report on Ghana’s National Cathedral project

0

An audit report by Deloitte and Touche has revealed that Ghana’s National Cathedral project, initiated by President Nana Akufo-Addo, has cost taxpayers $97 million (GH¢339 million) as of December 2023—with no significant physical structure to show for it.

The report, classified as “Confidential” and spanning 76 pages, exposes financial mismanagement, procurement breaches, and questionable payments, raising serious concerns about accountability and transparency. It was shared on social media by government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

FULL DOCUMENT: Read the full Deloitte and Touche audit report on Ghana’s National Cathedral

Key findings from the report

1. Payments without contracts

The government paid GH¢15.7 million to Sir David Adjaye & Associates (the project’s lead architect) before a contract was signed in August 2019.

Some payments were made before the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) approved the use of single-source procurement for the architect.

2. Discrepancies in payments

Conflicting records show GH¢4.9 million in unexplained differences between payments declared by the Office of the President and those confirmed by Adjaye’s firm.

Mobilization fees paid to consultants varied significantly, with $861,000 unaccounted for in one instance.

3. Unauthorized additional work

$12.4 million was spent on design variations (including a 350-seater restaurant and Bible Museum) without a signed contract or PPA approval.

4. Questionable expenses

$110,630 was spent on fundraising events in the U.S., but no donations were traced to these efforts.

$24,498 was spent on personal items (e.g., engraved mugs, pens, and an Apple laptop for a consultant) under “reimbursable expenses.”

5. Lack of documentation

GH¢243,255 in 2023 expenses lacked supporting documents, including payments for funerals, media engagements, and transport.

GH¢117,180 was paid to the Board Secretary for “rent,” but no formal approval was found.

6. Procurement violations

The single-source selection of Adjaye did not meet legal requirements under Ghana’s Public Procurement Act.

The Procurement Committee was improperly constituted, lacking key members as mandated by law.

7. Financial mismanagement

The project owes GH¢343 million to contractors, with construction stalled since May 2022 due to funding shortages.

Pension contributions for staff were unpaid, violating Ghana’s National Pension Act.

8. Going concern risks

Deloitte flagged “material uncertainty” over the project’s survival, as fundraising efforts failed and government seed money dried up.

Government and Management Responses

The Board claimed some payments were “administrative decisions” and denied wrongdoing.

The Office of the President did not provide explanations for pre-contract payments.

Deloitte noted inadequate responses and unresolved issues in its final report.

Conclusion

The audit paints a picture of poor governance, financial irregularities, and weak oversight in a project meant to be a national monument. With no clear funding plan and mounting debts, the future of the National Cathedral remains uncertain—leaving Ghanaian taxpayers questioning where their money went.

MPs Tackle Bawku, Ablekuma Violence Issues

0

Parliamentary Select Committees on Defence and Interior, and Security and Intelligence, have jointly engaged the Ministers for Defence and Interior, along with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), to address growing security concerns in Bawku and the recent violence that disrupted the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

The meeting, held in Parliament, follows renewed violent conflict in Bawku that has resulted in deaths along the Bawku-Bazua and Walewale-Tamale highways, and public outcry over violent scenes at 19 polling stations during the Ablekuma North rerun.

Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee, James Agalga, said the committee’s decision to summon the security heads was driven by Parliament’s oversight responsibility.

“We wanted to apprise ourselves of efforts by the state to restore safety in the conflict-prone zones and hold accountable those who incited or participated in violence during the by-election,” Mr. Agalga stated.

He revealed that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, had assured the committee of investigations underway, including reviews of viral videos from Ablekuma North, with the promise that all perpetrators would face the full rigour of the law. He confirmed that a police officer involved in the assault of a journalist during the election had been interdicted.

The Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, underscored the bipartisan nature of the parliamentary response, stressing that the Bawku conflict was of national concern and deserved non-partisan attention.

“We are working jointly and deliberately with the relevant ministers and state security to ensure a credible resolution of the Bawku conflict. We fully support the Otumfuo-led mediation process and urge all parties involved to cooperate in the interest of peace,” Rev. Fordjour said.

He condemned the attacks on both journalists and civilians during the Ablekuma North poll, warning that violence must never be allowed to determine electoral outcomes.

“Our democracy is all we have. We cannot create a precedent where the most violent party wins elections. It is our responsibility to protect the sanctity of the ballot,” he stated.

Chairperson of the Security and Intelligence Committee, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, echoed the concerns and emphasized the broader national security implications of the Bawku unrest.

“One can appreciate the spillover impact of the Bawku conflict on our national security, particularly along the northern border and the sub-region,” she said, adding, “We’ve been reassured that both security measures and peace-building efforts, such as the Otumfuo-led mediation, are being put in place to restore law and order and ensure lasting peace.”

Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings continued that the joint committee intends to follow up on all commitments and recommendations discussed to ensure concrete actions are taken, especially ahead of upcoming elections, including the anticipated Akwatia by-election.

“This is not going to be a one-off. We must learn from these incidents and prevent them from recurring. As committees with oversight responsibilities, we will ensure the process continues to its logical conclusion,” she said.

Liverpool in Advanced Talks to Sign Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike for Over £70m

0

Hugo Ekitike

Liverpool are closing in on a deal to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike in a transfer expected to exceed £70 million, according to multiple sources.

Talks between the Premier League champions and Frankfurt are said to be at an advanced stage, with the Merseyside club pushing to complete the signing before the weekend. The Reds have intensified their search for a central striker this summer, and Ekitike has emerged as a top target.

Frankfurt recently rejected a £70 million bid from Newcastle United for the 22-year-old forward, making Liverpool’s improved offer the current frontrunner. Ekitike is reportedly open to the move to Anfield, enticed by the prospect of joining the Premier League champions and playing under Arne Slot.

While Liverpool have also shown strong interest in Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, the Magpies remain firm in their stance that the Swedish striker is not for sale at any price.

Liverpool have been one of the busiest clubs in the summer transfer window so far. The club shattered the British transfer record with the £116 million signing of midfielder Florian Wirtz, and have also added full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong for £40 million and £30 million respectively.

Meanwhile, Newcastle, having failed to secure Ekitike, are expected to accelerate talks with Brentford over striker Yoane Wissa as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new season.

Minister of Education visits Campbell Foundation

0

The Minister of Education, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, has assured learners of the Father Campbell Foundation that they will be  integrated into society after being equipped with the necessary employable skills.

“We will not abandon you. Through apprenticeship and vocational training, the Ministry will support you to become independent and contribute meaningfully to society,” he assured the learners.

He gave the assurance  when he visited  the Foundation at Weija to interact with street children currently benefitting from the Ghana Education Outcomes Project (GEOP).

GEOP is a national intervention aimed at reintegrating out-of-school youth into education and skills development pathways.

The Minister’s visit formed part of his commitment to supporting inclusive education and ensuring no child is left behind.

He commended Rev Father Andrew Campbell and his team for their unwavering dedication to transforming the lives of vulnerable children through education, shelter, and care.

Mr Iddrisu also pledged to provide the necessary educational infrastructure to upscale the current intake from 170 children to 1000.

“Father Campbell’s selfless work is restoring dignity and giving hope to children society once ignored. These are the kinds of interventions that demonstrate the power of compassion combined with structure. As a Ministry, we are committed to supporting this vision,” hon. Iddrisu extolled.

The Foundation is one of the key implementing centers under GEOP, a results-based education programme supported by the World Bank and other development partners.

It provides a structured learning environment for out-of-school children between the ages of 15 and 18, many of whom have lived on the streets.

These learners undergo a 6 to 9 months accelerated learning programme focused on literacy and numeracy. Upon completion, they transition into certified competency-based skills training in areas they are passionate about, helping them build sustainable livelihoods and rejoin society with purpose.

Several of the children shared emotional stories about their lives on the streets and how the programme has given them a second chance.

Many of them expressed profound gratitude to the Foundation, the Ministry, and GEOP for giving them access to education, shelter, and a renewed sense of purpose.

With support from trained social workers, educators, and healthcare professionals, Father Campbell’s Foundation provides holistic care addressing not only the educational but also the emotional and social needs of its learners.

The Minister said the Ministry was committed to scaling similar interventions across the country, ensuring that vulnerable children, regardless of their background, have access to quality education and lifelong learning opportunities.

The Cedi will hold – BoG Governor assures stability

0

Governor of Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama Governor of Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama

Governor of the Bank of Ghana(BoG), Dr Johnson Asiama, has reassured the public that the recent gains made by the cedi are sustainable, asserting that the local currency is not on the verge of a reversal.

Amid public anxiety following slight fluctuations over the past few days, Dr Asiama addressed the concerns head-on, noting that short-term movements are normal in any flexible exchange rate regime.

“Now that the cedi somehow has stabilized, we are seeing some bit of tension. Everybody thinks the cedi is about to reverse its gains. No! It’s not,” he said.

“If we allow the cedi to perform the function it is supposed to perform within the flexible exchange rate regime, you will see these movements. It doesn’t mean the world is coming to an end. It will move again.”

The cedi recently became the best-performing currency among its African peers, posting significant gains against major international currencies. These improvements have been attributed to tight monetary policy, falling inflation, and higher export inflows—particularly from Gold.

However, minor declines in recent days have sparked a fresh wave of speculative trading, prompting fears of a potential reversal.

“These jitters are precisely why we need calm heads,” Dr Asiama noted. “Market fundamentals remain strong, and the central bank is committed to preserving that momentum.”

Speaking at the ABSA-UPSA Quarterly Banking Roundtable, he encouraged Ghanaians to trust in the cedi, highlighting the dangers of informal dollarization, where services such as tuition fees or luxury goods are priced in foreign currencies.

“The cedi can be as strong as any global currency if we commit to it. You don’t need to hold the dollar. The cedi can be as good as any currency. It all depends on what we collectively do with it.”

He warned that these local behaviors undermine the cedi more than external shocks or inflation.

With inflation on the decline, foreign reserves improving, and the IMF program on course, analysts say Ghana is entering a more stable macroeconomic phase. The BoG’s renewed emphasis on currency legitimacy, responsible FX behavior, and targeted inflation policies will be crucial in maintaining this stability.

Dr Asiama concluded with a call to civic action: “We all have a role to play when it comes to preserving the cedi. We will do our part at the Bank of Ghana but you must do your part. When you find someone doing the wrong thing, report it.”

Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor

Ghana’s energy sector is experiencing a major turnaround, with significant improvements in power reliability, financial accountability, and infrastructural upgrades, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Mr John Jinapor has announced.

In an interaction with the media, Mr Jinapor stated that ongoing reforms have resulted in the stabilisation of the national grid.

In line with a directive from the Minister, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has initiated a comprehensive programme to tackle unplanned outages. This involves detailed mapping of overhead feeders, identifying structural defects and interferences.

A major rationalisation exercise has seen the termination of about 202 dormant supply contracts flagged for non-performance valued at $227.6 million, £1.17 million, and €4.08 million respectively.

An additional 145 contracts are under further scrutiny, with likely termination if breaches are confirmed.

The Minister revealed that his Ministry has introduced clear KPIs for ECG’s management at national, regional, and district levels to ensure accountability, adding that ECG has transitioned to a new billing system (Zeus), with the aim of modernising customer billing and commercial processes.

“The ECG has fully complied with the Cash Waterfall Mechanism (CWM) since February 2025, ensuring timely payments to power generators, fuel suppliers, and GRIDCo”. He noted.

The Yapei Kusawgu lawmaker revealed that a single holding account has been set up at GCB Bank to support the appropriate disbursement of the Cash Water Mechanism to enhance transparency and equity.

“In June 2025, ECG recorded its highest-ever monthly collection of GH¢1.678 billion, representing a 47.3% increase over June 2024, between January and June 2025, 63 new communities were connected to the national grid under the government’s accelerated rural electrification programme,” he emphasised.

In support of the government’s 24-Hour Economy agenda, the Energy and Green Transition Ministry has commenced rehabilitation of grid-connected streetlights across the country to improve public safety and boost nighttime economic activity.

Cabinet has approved a new Private Sector Participation (PSP) model in electricity distribution through a Multiple Lease Option.

A Steering Committee has been formed to lead the implementation.

He said the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, in collaboration with the Finance Ministry and Independent Power Producers (IPPs), are reviewing legacy Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), emphasising that these reforms are part of a broader vision to secure affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy for all Ghanaians while preparing the sector for future demands.

Marriage is expensive for men- Stonebwoy

0

Ghanaian dancehall star Stonebwoy has shared his thoughts on the true costs of marriage, emphasizing that it involves more than just financial expenses.

In a recent interview with Joy Prime, Stonebwoy explained that being a man carries significant responsibilities, particularly in marriage. He noted that a successful marriage requires time, energy, and emotional investment resources that are invaluable and cannot simply be bought, despite their costs.

“Interestingly, marriage is expensive, and having a wife comes with its own expenses. You have to invest time, which is valuable. You need to allocate resources, which don’t come cheap. You must give attention, and attention is also costly. These are things you can’t buy,” he said.

The “Into the Future” hitmaker further pointed out that society often expects men to bear most of the responsibilities within a marriage. This expectation can be both emotionally and financially challenging. (Read Moliy’s ‘Shake It to the Max (FLY)’ conquers Ghana on Spotify’s Global Impact List, Black Sherif dominates chart)

“As a man, I grew up in a household where I witnessed responsibility firsthand. I understand that societal norms require men to take on caretaking roles. While it is expected of us, it’s not easy, and it certainly isn’t cheap. So, the expenses are real,” he added.

Stonebwoy and his wife, Dr Louisa marked their eighth wedding anniversary last month. The couple’s union which has produced two children has been a subject of admiration and inspiration for many, with Stonebwoy frequently expressing his love and appreciation for his wife and family, showcasing the strength and stability of their relationship despite the demands of his music career.

Arsenal Sign Olivia Smith in Record- Breaking £1m Deal

Olivia Smith

Arsenal have completed the signing of Canada international Olivia Smith from Liverpool in a record-breaking £1 million deal, making her the most expensive player in women’s football history.

The 20-year-old forward has penned a four-year contract with the Champions League holders, capping a rapid rise since turning professional just last year.

Smith’s move surpasses the previous women’s transfer record set in January, when Chelsea paid £900,000 to sign American defender Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave.

“It’s a privilege and an honour to sign for Arsenal,” Smith said. “It’s my dream to compete for the biggest titles here in England and in Europe, and I’m excited to get started and contribute to doing that here with Arsenal.”

Smith made her senior international debut for Canada at the age of 15 and joined Liverpool from Sporting CP in 2023 for just over £200,000—a then-record fee for the Reds.

She impressed in her debut Women’s Super League season, scoring seven goals in 20 appearances to help Liverpool to a seventh-place finish.

Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers hailed the signing, calling Smith an “exciting young player” with the talent and drive to make a “big contribution” to the club’s ambitions.

The deal is another statement of intent from Arsenal, who continue to invest heavily in their women’s squad as they push to dominate both domestically and in Europe.

Resolve minor disputes through ADR mechanism – Justice Mensah-Homiah

By Emelia B. Addae

Koforidua, July 18, GNA – The Court-Connected Alternative Dispute Resolution (CCADR) has ramped up its initiatives to facilitate the mediation of minor disputes by engaging court clerks and audience at the Koforidua District Court A and B.

Justice Angelina Mensah-Homiah, a Court of Appeal Judge with oversight responsibility for CCADR, led the sensitisation session as part of ADR pre-week outreach programme of activities.

She highlighted the benefits of CCADR as a flexible, interest-based process that empowered parties to voluntarily resolve their issues outside traditional courtroom litigation.

“Mediation under CCADR allows parties to choose their mediator and withdraw at any time. It is designed to ease the burden on the courts while delivering more accessible justice,” she explained.

During the engagement, which featured a dynamic question-and-answer session, Justice Mensah-Homiah introduced the staff of the Koforidua CCADR centre and encouraged parties with unresolved cases to contact the centre for assistance.

She urged the CCADR team to remain free, fair, and firm in fulfilling their duties.

She also announced that the Eastern Region would host the national launch of this year’s CCADR Week on July 21, 2025, with mass media session set to address long-pending Alternative Dispute Resolution cases.

Justice Mensah-Homiah appealed to members of the public, particularly those with minor pending disputes in court, to consider transferring them to the CCADR for a peaceful and expedited resolution.

The outreach formed part of nationwide sensitisation efforts leading to the annual CCADR Week celebration.

Mahama directs dissolution of National Cathedral Board of Trustees

0

President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the dissolution of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral of Ghana and the shutdown of its Secretariat, following what government describes as damning audit findings.

In a statement delivered by Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu during a press briefing on Friday July 18, the presidency announced that the National Cathedral Secretariat, which had operated from the Jubilee House, was formally dissolved on May 1, 2025.

“The above audit findings rock the very foundation of the project and the work of the Secretariat and raise serious questions about the use of public funds,” Kwakye Ofosu stated.

He added that the project, registered as a company Limited by Guarantee, will face legal action to ensure its complete dissolution.

“The National Cathedral Ghana was registered limited by guarantee. In view of that, the Attorney General has been directed to take legal steps… and we expect that to be done in the coming days,” he said.

NPP holds National Delegates Conference today

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is convening its much-anticipated National Delegates Conference today, Saturday, July 19, at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra.

More than 5,500 delegates from across the country are expected to attend the conference, which comes at a pivotal moment for the party as it seeks to regroup and reposition itself following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Held under the theme “Rebuilding Together with our Values,” the conference signals a call for introspection, unity, and a reaffirmation of the party’s founding ideals.

Joseph Osei Owusu, Chairman of the Planning Committee, disclosed in an interview with Channel One News that the conference will consider and vote on over 50 consolidated motions. These motions, he explained, are the result of a thorough review process involving more than 300 proposed amendments submitted to the party’s Amendments Committee.

“In all, we have about a little over 50 motions. You may have one amendment, which will have about 50 proposed amendments. So what the motions are doing is to consolidate the various issues that come around, and the members will have to vote on those motions,” Osei Owusu explained.

He further revealed that the motions have been compiled into a booklet, which has already been previewed by the party’s National Executive Committee. The documents are expected to be distributed to delegates before the voting session begins.

“All of the motions will be considered. We believe that by 4 PM we should be done,” he added.

The outcome of the conference is expected to shape the NPP’s constitutional and strategic direction as the party prepares for the future.

‘Please free my mother’ – Agradaa’s child cries to court

Agradaa's child has made a passionate appeal to the court for her mother's release Agradaa’s child has made a passionate appeal to the court for her mother’s release

A teenage daughter of Nana Agradaa has made a passionate appeal to the court to temper justice with mercy and pardon her mother who has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.

The young girl explained that her mother’s incarceration has not just created a big void in her life but has also broken her heart since she is just a kid.

A video in circulation on social media platform X captured the young girl making an emotional plea to the court saying, “15 years is long, what am I to do?…I need my mom”.

Her video received a lot of mixed reactions from the reading public with some suggesting that the court should consider the little girl’s age and reduce the mother’s years in prison.

However, others angrily reacted suggesting that the plea from the teenager appeared to be part of a broader scheme orchestrated by people closer to Agradaa to draw sympathy for the jailed evangelist.

A famous fetish priestess, Nana Agradaa allegedly swindled a lot of unsuspecting members of society with her “fake sika gari” money doubling scheme which she operated for years.

However, she quickly turned to an evangelist after she has allegedly used the “Sika gari” scheme to scam a lot of people who visited her to get their money doubled.

She was finally sentenced to 15 years imprisonment with hard labour after she was found guilty of crime relating to defrauding by false pretence and charlatanic advertisement.

She was found guilty of using the aforementioned strategies to hoodwink members of her Heaven-Way International Ministry and defrauded them.

Prof Ransford Gyampo, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority Prof Ransford Gyampo, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has revealed that former President John Dramani Mahama had made several appeals to him in the past to serve in public office, but he only recently accepted the invitation.

Speaking in an interview with Adom FM in a video shared on social media platfor X, Prof. Gyampo disclosed that President Mahama first approached him in the lead-up to the 2016 general elections, urging him to contest the Mfantseman parliamentary seat—his home constituency. However, he declined the offer at the time, citing that he did not feel ready.

He also recalled being approached by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to contest the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary seat during the by-election following the death of Kyeremateng Agyarko. At the time, Prof. Gyampo was a visiting scholar at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom and declined once again, opting to focus on his academic career instead.

“I told the party leadership then that I still wanted to be teaching,” he said. “So, I think this is the third or fourth time that President Mahama has invited me to serve.”

According to the political science professor, he eventually decided to honour the latest invitation because he believes in contributing meaningfully to national development, especially when called upon by leaders who recognize his value.

“I accepted the last of such invites because I thought that if the President and his NDC party think that I have something good to offer this nation, then I have to avail myself to service. That’s why I could not turn down the invitation this time around,” he explained.

Prof. Gyampo expressed his readiness to serve the country diligently in his current capacity, stating, “I am ready to work hard and help further develop the country.”

His appointment as Acting CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority marks a significant shift from academia to public service, highlighting a new chapter in his career trajectory.

NSA Extends GBA Executive Board Mandate Amid Reform Plans

0

NSA boss, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah (in cap) with GBA Executive Board members

THE NATIONAL Sports Authority (NSA) has officially extended the mandate of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) Executive Board by 30 days, pushing the expiry date to August 19, 2025. The extension takes effect from July 19, 2025.

The decision follows a meeting held on Tuesday, July 15, between NSA leadership and the interim GBA board led by acting president Roger Barnor. The GBA had initially proposed holding elections on July 19, citing the upcoming expiration of the current administration’s term on July 22, following the resignation of former President Abraham Kotei Neequaye.

However, the NSA deferred the election process, stressing the need to fully implement the recommendations of the Ministerial Committee established to investigate the death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju. The boxer tragically passed away on March 29, 2025, after a bout in Ghana.

In a statement, the NSA emphasised its commitment to reforming boxing governance in line with the Committee’s findings.

To prevent a leadership vacuum during the reform period, the NSA has opted to temporarily retain the current GBA Executive Board while preparing for the establishment of an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to oversee the implementation of necessary reforms.

“In light of this and to avoid a vacuum in the administration of the GBA, it has become necessary for the mandate of the Executive Board to be extended for a short period,” the statement continued.

The NSA reaffirmed its commitment to working with the GBA and other stakeholders to safeguard and improve the sport of boxing in Ghana.

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Council of the Elders has submitted a series of significant proposed amendments to the party’s constitution, seeking to address the underlying issues that contributed to their defeat in the 2024 general elections.

These amendments, aimed at strengthening the party’s foundation and democratic processes, are expected to be a key focus of deliberation at the NPP National Delegates Conference, scheduled to take place today, July 19, at the University of Ghana.

The NPP experienced an electoral setback in December 2024, with its presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, losing to the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) John Dramani Mahama.

The NDC secured 56.55% of the popular vote and a commanding 184 out of 276 parliamentary seats, marking the NPP’s most significant loss in the Fourth Republic and ending their two terms in office.

This heavy defeat has prompted widespread calls for introspection and fundamental reforms within the party, as it looks towards the 2028 elections.

The submission by the National Council of the Elders forms part of a 59-point proposal to revise the party’s constitution.

Typically, the Council of Elders plays an advisory and mediating role within the party, often stepping in during times of crisis to guide the party back to its core principles.

Education Minister pledges skills training, support for street children

0

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has assured learners of the Father Campbell Foundation of the ministry’s commitment to integrate them into society after equipping them with employable skills.

He gave the assurance when he visited the Foundation in Weija on Friday, July 18, 2025, to interact with street children currently benefitting from the Ghana Education Outcomes Project (GEOP), a national intervention aimed at reintegrating out-of-school youth into education and skills development pathways.

Mr. Iddrisu pledged to provide the necessary educational infrastructure to upscale the current intake from 170 children to 1000.

“We will not abandon you. Through apprenticeship and vocational training, the Ministry will support you to become independent and contribute meaningfully to society,” he assured the learners.

The Minister’s visit forms part of his commitment to supporting inclusive education and ensuring no child is left behind. He commended Rev. Father Andrew Campbell and his team for their unwavering dedication to transforming the lives of vulnerable children through education, shelter, and care.
“Father Campbell’s selfless work is restoring dignity and giving hope to children society once ignored. These are the kinds of interventions that demonstrate the power of compassion combined with structure. As a Ministry, we are committed to supporting this vision,” Mr. Iddrisu said.

The Foundation is one of the key implementing centres under GEOP, a results-based education programme supported by the World Bank and other development partners. The Foundation provides a structured learning environment for out-of-school children between the ages of 15 and 18, many of whom have lived on the streets.

These learners undergo a 6 to 9-month accelerated learning programme focused on literacy and numeracy.

The Ministry of Education has reiterated its commitment to scaling similar interventions across the country, ensuring that vulnerable children, regardless of their background, have access to quality education and lifelong learning opportunities.

NPP’s Akwasi Acquah backs plan to export Ghanaian nurses

Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah

Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has thrown his weight behind the government’s proposed plan to export Ghanaian nurses through a bilateral labour migration agreement.

The initiative, aimed at creating international job opportunities for health professionals, was described by the MP as a positive step that aligns with earlier national efforts.

In an exclusive interview on Channel One Newsroom, Mr Acquah said the policy has long been part of discussions among stakeholders and was even included in the party’s manifesto.

“This is a kind of policy that we have all spoken about. It was contained in our manifesto. This is something that most countries are doing,” he noted.

Reflecting on previous efforts, Mr Acquah pointed to programmes he participated in during his time as Deputy Minister for Health.

“When I was the Deputy Minister for Health, I had travelled to Frankfurt and I had been told that there was an agreement that we needed to pursue to get Ghanaian nurses to Frankfurt,” he recalled.

“We started the Barbados programme. We often sent people there, which was an interesting programme.”

He expressed optimism about the current government building on these past initiatives and called for rigorous scrutiny to ensure the best outcomes.

“So if this government is building on it, we will do the right checks and balances on it to get the right deals for our nurses and make sure even the country benefits from such an arrangement,” he added.

Mr Acquah’s comments follow an announcement by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh at the Government Accountability Series on Friday, July 18.

The minister disclosed that over 13 countries have shown interest in recruiting Ghanaian nurses, signaling growing global demand for the nation’s healthcare workforce.

Victor Owusu’s family slams NPP over alleged distortions of historical facts

0

Victor Owusu was the flagbearer of the Popular Front Party (PFP) in the 1979 election Victor Owusu was the flagbearer of the Popular Front Party (PFP) in the 1979 election

The family of the late Victor Owusu, a leading figure in the Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition, has accused the current leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of deliberately distorting the party’s historical facts to erase his legacy.

In protest, the family has purportedly issued a strongly worded statement, a copy of which has been posted on social media platform X, elaborating on the significant roles the late family member played as a stalwart of Ghana’s political history and a key member of the UP tradition.

In the statement, the family alleged that the NPP has recklessly omitted Victor Owusu’s name, image, and contributions from the party’s official documentation, visual commemorations, and institutional memory.

The family explained that Victor Owusu was the flagbearer of the Popular Front Party (PFP) in the 1979 general elections a party that later metamorphosed into the NPP.

According to the family, the omission of Owusu’ contributions from the NPP’s official documentation, visual commemorations, and institutional memory could not be a mere oversight.

“This is not a matter of simple oversight, it is an act of historical vandalism and intellectual dishonesty that strikes at the very foundation of truth and justice in public memory”. The statement said.

This, they explained, was due to the fact that Victor Owusu was not merely a participant in Ghana’s political history but was a central architect in preserving the democratic ideals that birthed the NPP.

The family’s statement comes on the heels of the party’s delegate conference slated for July 19, 2025, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

According the family’s statement, the Popular Front Party (PFP) was the legitimate and ideological successor of the Progress Party (PP)

“…And it is from the PFP that the NPP emerged after the lifting of the ban on political parties in 1992…[therefore] Any attempt to surgically erase this linkage is historically false, legally flawed, and politically indefensible”. The family posited.

In view of the above, the family demanded an immediate public rectification by the NPP leadership acknowledging Victor Owusu’s pivotal role in the political ancestry of the Party.

Additionally, they demanded full restoration of his name, image, and contribution in all historical records, commemorative platforms, official publications, and educational materials associated with the NPP tradition.

Furthermore, they demanded a formal apology to the family and the people of Agona-Asante, whose pride in the national legacy of their illustrious son cannot be muted by political expediency or selective memory.

Founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe Founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe

A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has reaffirmed his commitment to the party, insisting that no individual or group can force him out despite his growing concerns over the current state of affairs within its leadership.

Speaking in an interview with UTV, monitored by GhanaWeb, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe emphasized his longstanding association with the NPP, noting that he played a pivotal role in its formation and will not be dislodged by what he described as “young ones who don’t know how the party came into existence.”

“I am a member of the party and I will forever remain a member of the party. Nobody can push me out of that party,” he said.

“There are some of these young ones who don’t know how the party came into existence, and then they talk loosely. If you want to know me very well, contact Kwame Pianim. He will tell you the type of person I am.”

Responding to a question about whether he still pays his party dues, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe revealed that though he still has a membership car, he has stopped contributing financially, citing what he sees as the party’s shift away from its founding ideals.

“I have stopped paying the dues because they are of no use. When you put your money in, it is just like pouring water into a basket,” he explained.

“When I noticed that the party was turning into a money-making machine, I said I have to sit up. That is what the party is now.”

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe’s remarks come at a time of growing internal dissent within the NPP as it prepares for the 2028 general elections. His criticisms add to a chorus of voices calling for a return to the party’s founding principles of integrity, public service, and accountability.

NACOC Engages Moroccan Envoy On Cannabis Roadmap

0

NACOC officials and the envoy

The management of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), on Wednesday paid a courtesy call on Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco, Mrs. Imane Quaadil, as part of a strategy for activating and executing the cannabis licence.

The meeting was primarily intended to boost partnerships related to Ghana’s cannabis licence regulation, with Morocco serving as one of the models for cannabis regulation and implementation.

Brig. Gen. Maxwell Obuba Mantey, Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission, who praised Morocco’s government for its continuous support for Ghana’s progress since independence, revealed plans by the Commission to engage regulatory bodies responsible for cannabis licence in Morocco.

That, he noted, will enable them to learn success stories on some pragmatic ways of dealing with the activation and operationalisation of the cannabis licence.

The Director-General also asked the Ambassador to consider providing avenues for the Commission to engage with key parties responsible for illegal drug control in Morocco, while expressing NACOC’s commitment to explore opportunities that would build and enhance the capacities of its staff.

Mrs. Imane Quaadil, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco, also thanked the Director-General and staff of NACOC for the visit, which was the first of its kind by any official from the Narcotics Control Commission.

She expressed the willingness of officials of Morocco to further engage in the areas of intelligence and information sharing, capacity building, as they continue to liaise with the relevant key agencies to ensure a healthy working relationship.

Mrs. Quaadil said her office will also collaborate with Moroccan anti-drug authorities to host some selected NACOC staff in September 2025 to study the procedures and successes in the implementation of cannabis regulations.

She further expressed concern about the devastations caused by drug abuse among youth across the continent, including her country in terms of drug consumption and production, particularly cannabis, which is primarily grown in the northern part of Morocco.

“We will ensure to work with NACOC to address the illicit drug abuse and trafficking menace, as in Morocco, it is sad to note that most of these traffickers use some of our African youth who are mostly illegal migrants to perpetrate their nefarious act,” she noted.

Alexander Twum-Barimah, NACOC’s Deputy Director-General in charge of Enforcement, Control, and Elimination, stated that the Commission will continue to collaborate with the Embassy on anti-narcotics and other issues requiring their assistance.

Coldplay fan who posted video capturing alleged affair of Astronomer CEO and firm’s HR manager defends sharing the video

Coldplay fan who posted video capturing alleged affair of Astronomer CEO and firm

A video captured during Coldplay’s concert in Boston has gone viral after a fan unknowingly filmed a tech CEO and his HR chief embracing on the venue’s giant screen, triggering allegations of infidelity and sparking widespread outrage online.

Grace Springer, a 28-year-old fan from New Jersey, recorded the moment during the band’s performance at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday night and shared it on TikTok. The clip showed Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and the company’s Chief People Officer Kristin Cabot wrapped in a close embrace as Coldplay frontman Chris Martin’s “kiss cam” segment played out before the crowd.

As the camera zoomed in on the pair, Martin jokingly commented to the audience, “Oh look at these two,” before noting, “Either they’re having an affair or they’re very shy,” as Byron suddenly ducked behind a barrier and Cabot turned away and covered her face. The crowd responded with laughter, but the incident quickly took a more serious turn online.

Springer said she was unaware of the pair’s identities when she posted the clip. “I had no idea who the couple was,” she told The U.S. Sun. “Just thought I caught an interesting reaction to the kiss cam and decided to post it.”

She expressed some regret for the fallout but defended her decision to post the video. “A part of me feels bad for turning these people’s lives upside down, but, play stupid games… win stupid prizes,” she said. “I hope their partners can heal from this and get a second chance at the happiness they deserve.”

Within hours, the video garnered millions of views, reaching over 46 million by Friday morning with 4.9 million likes. Online users swiftly identified Byron and Cabot, both of whom work at Astronomer, a software firm valued at $1.3 billion.

Byron has served as CEO of the Cincinnati-based company since July 2023, while Cabot joined as Chief People Officer nine months ago. On her LinkedIn profile, Cabot describes herself as someone who “wins trust with employees of all levels,” while Byron previously praised her as a “proven leader” with “exceptional leadership and deep expertise in talent management.”

The video’s viral status has led to criticism across social media, with many condemning the duo for their apparent public display of affection. One user wrote, “Sorry for the wife but glad they’re being exposed and embarrassed.” Another added, “They are both incredibly stupid, sorry. Why would you go to a concert of all places if you are having an affair.”

In the days since the footage spread, several fake posts and unverified statements have circulated online. However, sources close to the concert’s production insisted that the moment was not staged. “The cameraman was scanning the crowd at random. There’s an editor backstage selecting which camera to put on screen. This situation would have been totally random,” one insider told The U.S. Sun.

Another crew member said, “It’s a shtick Chris [Martin] does every show. Their reaction made it much worse – very cringey. Not sure what they were thinking. Maybe they thought the odds of being caught on camera in a crowd of 50,000 were low.”

Neither Byron nor Cabot has publicly responded to the accusations.

GHACMA urges expansion of restorative justice in Ghana

0

By Eric Appah Marfo

Accra, July 18, GNA – The Ghana Association of Certified Mediators and Arbitrators (GHACMA) has called for the expansion of Victim-Offender Mediation (VOM) and other Restorative Justice (RJ) approaches within Ghana’s justice system.

Speaking at a forum in Accra, Mr. Martin C. Nwosu, Chair of GHACMA’s Restorative Justice Committee, described RJ as a vital reform to ease the burden on Ghana’s overstretched criminal justice system.

“Our courts are inundated with cases—some so minor they do not merit full trials.

“Under restorative justice, both the victim and the offender can sit down, discuss the harm caused, and agree on how to make amends. This is more beneficial than simply punishing the offender,” he said.

The seminar was organised by GHACMA in collaboration with the Centre for African Peace and Conflict Resolution (CAPCR), and California State University, Sacramento.

It brought together stakeholders from the judiciary, law enforcement, academia, civil society, and community organisations.

GHACMA and CAPCR are advocating for greater public awareness, training for justice actors, the establishment of private mediation centres, and policy reforms to institutionalise RJ within Ghana’s criminal justice framework.

Mr. Nwosu criticised the retributive nature of the current system, noting that victims are often sidelined once the State assumes prosecution, while offenders face stigma and exclusion post-sentence, increasing the risk of reoffending.

He argued that minor cases such as non-aggravated assault and property damage congest courtrooms without delivering meaningful outcomes.

“A man slaps another. He’s fined or jailed. But what has the victim gained? Restorative justice allows the parties to talk, reconcile, and continue coexisting in peace,” Mr. Nwosu illustrated.

He cited Ghana’s Courts Act (Section 73) and the Alternative Dispute Resolution Act, 2010 (Section 64) as existing legal provisions for RJ, but noted that judicial discretion to refer cases to mediation is rarely exercised and often delayed.

“Referrals only happen after the first court appearance, which can take up to two or three months—causing unnecessary delay.”

Mr. Nwosu called for RJ to be institutionalised at pre-trial, trial, and post-trial stages to improve accessibility and flexibility.

Professor Ernest Uwazie, Director of CAPCR, said RJ focuses on repairing harm, restoring victims, rehabilitating offenders, and reintegrating both parties into society.

“It is especially crucial in preventing reoffending by addressing root causes like social exclusion and trauma.”

He outlined RJ mechanisms such as victim-offender mediation, peacemaking circles, family group conferencing, and community reparation boards, while cautioning that RJ must be part of a broader strategy involving investment in education, health, and youth employment.

Mr. William Pitt, Acting Chair of GHACMA’s Interim Management Committee, hailed the seminar as a pivotal step in advancing justice reform.

He expressed confidence that the gathering would foster bold dialogue, enhance awareness, and empower attendees to champion restorative approaches.

Mr. Pitt emphasised the need for Ghana to re-examine its justice system—not solely through the lens of punishment and legal formalities, but with a focus on empathy, healing, and reintegration.

Restorative justice, he noted, is more than a framework; it is a transformative movement reshaping justice across societies, institutions, and global communities.

The Upper West Regional Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has intercepted a large cache of chemical substances suspected to be sodium cyanide along the banks of the Black Volta River.

A total of 250 drums containing the suspected chemicals were discovered at Zikpiri, where they had been stockpiled near the river and were reportedly ready to be transported to neighbouring Burkina Faso.

The consignment was uncovered by a team of GIS officers from the Nadowli District Command during a patrol operation along unapproved border routes in the area.

Press release

In a statement issued by the Regional Public Affairs Unit of the GIS, the drums have since been moved to the Nadowli Police Station for safekeeping and further examination by the appropriate authorities.

The statement added that the Command has activated its intelligence network to identify and apprehend those behind the illicit operation.

The interception reportedly took place on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at approximately 1:45 p.m.

The statement also noted that since taking office, the Upper West Regional Commander of GIS, Deputy Commissioner of Immigration (DCOI) Justice Bosomtwi-Ayensu, has instituted a 24-hour manning system at all known unapproved border routes in the region, alongside routine patrols to combat cross-border criminal activities.

Warning

The GIS has issued a strong warning to individuals engaged in illegal cross-border dealings, stressing that it remains committed to cracking down on such activities.

“We caution the general public to desist from any form of cross-border crime. The few recalcitrant persons whose livelihood depends on illegal activities along our territorial borders must either stop or be stopped. There are no ‘ifs’ or ‘buts’,” the statement warned.

Expand scholarships to boost healthcare training – Dr Tobbin appeals to government

Nana Samuel Amo Tobbin (R) with Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang (M) Nana Samuel Amo Tobbin (R) with Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang (M)

The founder and chancellor of Entrance University College of Health Sciences (EUCHS), Dr Nana Samuel Amo Tobbin, has urged the government to extend its investment efforts to private universities and increase scholarship opportunities to make high-quality healthcare education more accessible to Ghanaians.

He stated that sustainable funding and scholarship programmes would allow brilliant but financially challenged students to pursue medical education within the country.

Speaking at the inauguration of the university’s newly established Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, and a dental hospital, Dr Tobbin emphasised the value of training students locally, highlighting its economic benefits.

“Training our students here at home will ensure that the funds remain within the country and contribute to supporting our local communities,” he is quoted to have said by graphic.com.gh

The inauguration, held at Spintex Road in Accra on July 14, 2025, took place under the theme: “Training the Next Generation of Health Professionals.”

The event was launched by Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and dedicated by the Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye.

It was also attended by the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, along with religious leaders, students, faculty members, and foreign partners from across the sub-region.

Speaking at the event, the Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering collaboration and partnerships with the private health sector in order to build a stronger and more resilient healthcare system for the country.

She also commended the institution for becoming the first private tertiary establishment in Ghana to set up a medical and dental school.

“This is a remarkable achievement, especially considering the rigorous standards required to set up such institutions,” she said.

She further praised the Chancellor, Dr Samuel Amo Tobbin, the faculty, and staff for their dedication to excellence, urging them to continue striving for quality education and service.

“With the establishment of this dental school and hospital, there should be a mutually beneficial relationship between the students and the community. This facility must not only provide world-class dental training but also offer specialised care to the people of Spintex and beyond,” she further added.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang described Entrance University as a shining example of the potential within the private tertiary sector, urging other private institutions to follow its lead.

Dr Tobbin added that many Ghanaian students who pursued medical and dental education abroad often faced cultural and language barriers that hindered their ability to pass licensure examinations upon their return.

“These barriers are not the fault of the students but a consequence of their exposure to different educational environments. By training our students here at home, we ensure that the funds remain within the country and contribute to supporting our local communities,” Graphic Online quoted him as saying.

Ahanta West MP Takes Ahanta Language To The Classroom

0

Mavis Kuukua Bissue speaking at the event

Ahanta, one of Ghana’s most at-risk indigenous languages, is now to be studied in school following an initiative introduced by the Member of Parliament for the Ahanta West Constituency, Mavis Kuukua Bissue.

The Ahanta Language Renaissance Project (ALRP), a grassroot driven initiative started by Madam Bissue, has now launched the pilot phase starting in the Ahanta West Municipality.

Her motivation, in her welcome address at the launch of the initiative, was her personal story of not having the opportunity to learn the Ahanta language as a child despite being born to an Ahanta mother and father.

“I am an example of the dangers that lie ahead if we fail as a country to document and teach our indigenous languages. Despite being born to an Ahanta father and mother, I did not have the benefit of being taught the language at home or in school,” she said.

The Ahanta language, also known as Ayinda, is a Central Tano language within the Kwa branch of the Niger-Congo language family, spoken by the Ahanta people in the Western Region. It is similar to languages like Nzema, Brosa, Evalue and other languages that are spoken in south Eastern Ivory Coast.

For generations, this language has served as a medium of identity, oral history, governance, and spirituality for the Ahanta people.

As a result of long-standing marginalisation and the absence of state-led preservation efforts, the Ayinda language is now endangered, with fewer children speaking or understanding their ancestral tongue.

It has now been identified as one of nearly 40 indigenous Ghanaian languages at risk of extinction.

The ALRP, according to madam Bissue, builds on the foundational work done by the Ahanta Bible Project which has already worked with the Ghana Institute of Linguistics, Literacy and Bible Translation to produce alphabets and an orthography based on which the bible has been translated into Ahanta.

Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, speaking as a guest of honour, said this project was a revolutionary project that would help protect one of the largest indigenous languages spoken in the region.

“Language is more than a means of communication; it embodies the worldview, values, history, and soul of a people. As a region proud of its cultural diversity, we must support projects like the Ahanta Language Renaissance Project, ensuring no part of our heritage is left behind,” he said.

Member of Parliament for Ellembelle and Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah spoke highly of the initiative and its potential to address historical injustices.

According to him, the Ahanta people, a sister to the Nzemas, where he is MP, are a formidable group whose contribution to Ghana’s pre-colonial history should not be allowed to die with their language.

He said, “Ahantas are a very brave and dynamic group of people, their history is rich. If you are an Ahanta, you have every reason to be proud. Your people stood their grounds against European imperialists like the Dutch. Ahantas fought to maintain much of the lands of what is now the Western Region and it is not right that the legacy of such a group is allowed to die. This initiative led by your courageous MP is in the right direction and would help revive this beautiful language and help you restore your history and culture”.

The ALRP has already started in the 20 schools under the pilot in the Ahanta West Municipal Assembly. The project would continue to train more teachers in the coming months to expand the number of schools under the pilot.

The project, led by the MP, would engage the University of Education in Winneba to draw up the long-term curriculum that would ensure the formalisation of the language in basic and Senior High Schools (SHS).

“Let us teach our children not only to read and write, but to remember. To remember who they are. To remember the voices of their ancestors. To remember that their language is not a barrier, but a bridge ó a bridge to identity, to opportunity, and to the future,” Madam Bissue concluded.

ICU’s 6th national youth quadrennial delegates’ conference held

0

The 6th National Youth Quadrennial Delegates conference of the Industrial Commercial Workers Union (ICU) was yesterday held in Tema

The conference is a prelude to the 12th Quadrennial Delegates’ Conference of the National Union which serves as a forum for stock-taking on the activities of the National Youth Committee for the past four (4) years, and reconstitute the National Youth Executive for the ensuing quadrennial conference.

Delivering the keynote address, the General Secretary of Industrial Commercial Workers Union (ICU), Mr Morgan Ayawine, said the Union was expected to nurture and groom the youth to play productive and responsible roles not only at the workplace but at the national level as well.

With a full-fledged Education Department with capable human resources, Mr Ayawine said, the Union had the capacity to shape and mentor young generation through different forms of trade union training and retraining programmes.

“Some youth in our part of the world today, aspire to reach the highest point in whatever positions they find themselves without subjecting themselves to adequate training necessary to build and prepare them for such positions. This trend tends to impact negatively not only on their performance but the productivity of their organisations,” Mr Ayawine lamented.

“It is important that, as future leaders, you take part in such training programmes that may be designed to broaden your knowledge and skills in trade unionism and the world of work amidst its complexities,” he advised.

Mr Ayawine urged the youth, both in and outside of trade unions, not to indulge in unproductive activities especially social vices arising out of youthful exuberance that would negatively impact their future progress.

Rather, he advised this group to guard themselves against any conduct or practices that would jeopardise their future ascension to higher positions of responsibility, as every workplace environment holds you accountable for the productive outcomes of its operations.

Mr Ayawine lamented about the current rate of youth unemployment which he said: “is of grave concern to us as a trade union which advocates for job creation and sustainable employment for the youth”.

He appealed to the government to create an enabling environment for businesses and industry within the public and private sectors to create more and sustainable jobs to absorb the teeming unemployed youth to protect and secure their future.

“Once we have majority of our youth in gainful employment, the national economy would witness a quick turnaround that ensures massive development of our country,” he said.

The Head of Youth and Gender Desk of ICU, Mrs Esinam Afua Poku, assured that her leadership would work hard to promote gender equity and empower the youth across all sectors of the organisation.

Over the past four years, she said the desk has implemented numerous programmes and advocacy initiatives aimed at strengthening the participation of women and young people in decision-making, capacity building, leadership development, and social transformation.

No decision yet on repurposing National Cathedral site

Felix Kwakye Ofosu is Minister of State in Charge of Government Communication Felix Kwakye Ofosu is Minister of State in Charge of Government Communication

The Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has dismissed claims that the John Dramani Mahama-led administration intends to repurpose the stalled National Cathedral project into a Cultural Convention Site.

Speaking to the media on Friday, July 18, 2025, Kwakye Ofosu clarified that although a proposal suggesting an alternative use for the site had been submitted to the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat, no decision had been made by President Mahama.

“President Mahama has not taken any such decision. What happened is that the 24-Hour Secretariat received a proposal from an entity suggesting how the site could be used, but no such decision has been made by President Mahama,” he stated.

He added that the government was still awaiting the outcome of a forensic audit into the National Cathedral project and the activities of its Secretariat before making any final decision.

“As I indicated, once the forensic audit is completed and all relevant matters are clearly understood, a firm decision will be made regarding the future of the site,” he said.

The National Cathedral project was first announced by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2017 as a non-denominational Christian worship centre, intended to serve as a national place of prayer and a symbol of unity.

However, the project has since stalled amid funding challenges and concerns over governance and accountability.

Ghana endorses pan-African visa-free travel

0

Ghana’s government has thrown its weight behind a campaign to scrap visa requirements for Africans travelling across their own continent.

The Trans African Tourism and Unity Campaign received official backing from Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs this week, marking a major boost for the initiative.

The campaign wants to make it easier for Africans to visit other African countries without needing visas. Currently, many Africans face lengthy visa processes and high costs when travelling within Africa.

Ras Mubarak, a well-known broadcaster and former Member of Parliament, is leading the campaign. He believes removing visa barriers will boost tourism, trade and help African countries work together better.

“We are deeply honoured by the Government of Ghana’s endorsement, which strengthens our resolve to champion a visa-free Africa,” Mubarak said. “This is a historic step toward unlocking the immense potential of our continent’s cultural and economic diversity.”

The plan also fits with the African Union’s long-term vision for the continent, known as Agenda 2063, which aims to create a more united and prosperous Africa.

Also, several major media companies have already signed up to support the campaign, including Ghana’s Graphic Communications Group, Nigeria’s New Mail online, EIB Network, Woezor TV, Sierra Leone’s Eyewitness News, and Asaase Radio. More media partners are expected to join next week, helping spread the word about the campaign across Africa.

Tinny firmly stated that no artiste is compelled to help another Tinny firmly stated that no artiste is compelled to help another

Renowned Ghanaian hiplife artiste, Nii Addo Quayno, also known as Tinny, has stated that he has no obligation to help rising rappers and artistes in the industry.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Romeo on Okay FM, Tinny’s attention was brought to some comments by some upcoming Ghanaian acts that he does not support them in any way.

In response, Tinny firmly stated that no artiste is compelled to help another and that success is possible independently, with or without his involvement.

“Is it by force to help or mentor someone? Even me, who helped me? Nobody featured me before I could come into this industry.

“So why are they waiting for me?… You can do it without anybody. Believe in yourself, you can do it without Tinny,” he asserted.

Tinny clarified that he does assist upcoming acts, but such help is given voluntarily.

“I don’t feel pressured to help anyone. Those I’ve helped, they know. It’s not by force. I also believe in time. Eventually, they will make it,” he added.

He highlighted the contributions he makes through performances and events: “I do programs, I do shows, I put them on. So I do a lot for them.”

He cited some other music icons, questioning why he is being pressured.

“I remember someone pointed out that Samini, Sarkodie and others brought people on, so what about me? And I replied, Bob Marley, Amakye Dede and Michael Jackson, who did they help? So it’s not by force for me,” he said.

Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has been instructed by Interior Minister Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka to begin pursuing anybody involved in acts of violence during the 2020 and 2024 elections.

He asserts that the Ghana Police Service (GPS) must put out great effort to address electoral violence in the nation since the government does not tolerate any kind of violence.

He reminded the IGP of the impending by-election in Akwatia and the necessity of taking preventative action to identify any potential violent outbursts.

“I take this opportunity to remind you of the electoral violence in 2020 and 2024. I have seen the report, and our expectation is nothing short of swift prosecution.

“I also encourage you to collaborate with the Attorney-General’s Department and begin swift prosecution. The government and the party are solidly behind you,” the Minister is quoted as saying by myjoyonline.com.

“Ghana has enjoyed relatively peaceful elections since 1992. However, the recent violence in the Ablekuma North elections exposes certain weaknesses that we must address. You and your team must go through all the evidence at your disposal and deal with those involved. Don’t spare anyone.”

The call was made by Mr. Muntaka on Friday, July 18, during the 17th Regional Commanders Conference held at the National Police Headquarters in Accra.

Mr. Muntaka recently disclosed in his “Government Accountability Series” that the IGP had officially filed thorough reports on the violent episodes that tainted Ghana’s general election.

The IGP reaffirmed the police force’s commitment to combating all types of criminal activity in his speech.

Mr. Yohuno claimed that the administration had achieved several victories during his brief tenure in office, such as the 2020 and 2024 Galamsey fights.
