Frank Adu Jnr warns Mahama against loyalty-over-performance culture

0

Former CEO of Cal Bank, Frank Adu Jnr, has warned President John Mahama to ensure that political appointees in his administration deliver on their mandates or be removed from office.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday, June 30, he said persistent underperformance in key sectors stems from a dangerous culture where appointees are shielded from accountability because of their political affiliations.

“It is early days yet,” the renowned banker said, “but President Mahama has to be mindful of how his appointees deliver.”

He noted that while there has been some recent stability in the cedi, which “allows for planning,” the bigger challenge lies in keeping political promises made during campaigns, a task complicated by the way appointees are selected and managed.

“So far so good,” Mr Adu Jnr added, “but the difficulty is in keeping those promises, and the kind of political system we are operating in this country basically forces contestants to make promises, and then when they come, they have a difficulty meeting those promises.”

He expressed deep concern about the entrenched culture of impunity among political appointees, describing it as a systemic flaw that obstructs performance-based governance.

“I have not seen or heard in the past probably 18 years, any minister of a sector or a president criticise or question an appointee for non-performance,” he said. “And you know why? It’s because all these appointees are political affiliates.”

The former CEO explained that once a political campaign ends, those who contributed are often rewarded with appointments, but when they fail to deliver, they remain untouchable because of their ties to the political establishment.

“So if the person, let’s say any of the parastatals — let’s say VRA or ECG — the CEO being a political appointee is not performing, it’s very difficult for the sector minister… to take on the MD of VRA for non-performance.”

Mr Adu Jnr argued that this loyalty-first approach weakens the ability of governments to function effectively.

“Anytime there’s a problem in any sector, any ministry, you find the party, the minister, defending the position…or the mismanagement.”

He described the practice as fundamentally anti-meritocratic.

“The more noise you make whilst in the position, the likely…your chance of becoming a CEO or ambassador or a minister…That is not a meritocracy.”

He pointed to the Akufo-Addo administration as an example of what happens when appointees are not held accountable.

“That happened under Akufo-Addo. You take the SIGA companies, all these parastatals — which one of them performed? Maybe SIC, they paid dividends, etcetera.”

Mr. Adu Jnr concluded that without a shift toward performance-driven appointments, President Mahama and any incoming government risk repeating the same cycle of promises without progress.

Goldstar Air Celebrates Ghana’s National Day Of Prayer And Thanksgiving

0

News Ghana, Latest Updates and Breaking News of Ghana, Ike Dzokpo, https://www.newsghana.com.gh/goldstar-air-celebrates-ghanas-national-day-of-prayer-and-thanksgiving/

Ghanaian and United States registered company Goldstar Air, a private international
airline with an issued Air Carrier Licence (ACL/N-SCH No. 0239) from the Ghana Civil
Aviation Authority (GCAA) to operate passenger and cargo flights across West Africa
and intercontinental routes, is joining Ghanaians in celebrating the National Day of
Prayer and Thanksgiving, traditionally known as Republic Day. This day represents a
pivotal moment of spiritual reflection, national unity, and recommitment to moral,
economic, and cultural renewal. In a country where faith plays a central role in the fabric
of society, the day stands as a collective call for divine guidance and blessings for the
nation.

Goldstar Air’s celebration of this sacred day reflects its deep alignment with Ghanaian
values and its commitment to promoting a strong national identity. An identity that
transcends the aviation industry and supports the airline’s ambitious Project $1 Trillion
foreign reserves initiative. As the “wings of Ghana and belly of America” and a symbol
of national progress, Goldstar Air acknowledges the importance of divine intervention in
the development of the country, the aviation sector, and the people it serves. The National
Day of Prayer is also an annual day of observance designated by the United States
Congress and held on the first Thursday of May, when people are asked ‘to turn to God in
prayer and meditation’. The President is required by law to sign a proclamation each year,
encouraging all Americans to pray on this day.

The airline’s participation in National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving goes beyond mere
symbolism; it is an active expression of gratitude, humility, and service. Grounded in the
values of excellence, safety, and patriotism, Goldstar Air recognizes the critical role of
faith in shaping destinies. With Ghana’s diverse religious landscape, the airline
acknowledges the inclusivity of this observance, appealing to Christians, Muslims, and
Traditionalists alike.

Ghana’s Republic Day is celebrated on July 1st to commemorate the day in 1960 when
Ghana officially became a republic. This day marks the end of the Queen’s role as head
of state and the establishment of a republican constitution. While the actual Republic Day
and National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving is July 1st, the public holiday is being
observed on Friday, July 4th, 2025. This is due to a recent amendment to the Public
Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, which allows the President to shift public
holidays falling on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays to the preceding Friday or
following Monday.

Goldstar Air will use this opportunity to unify its workforce under a shared vision of
hope and prosperity. A prayer service will be held by management, making the
observance a moment of collective thanksgiving and spiritual rejuvenation. At the heart
of the airline’s celebration lies a message of inspiration: in an industry that demands
precision, accountability, and resilience, prayer serves as a stabilizing force.
When examining the worth of some global market revenues, such as Aviation ($3.5
Trillion), Tourism ($10.9 Trillion), Manufacturing ($16.182 Trillion), Chocolate ($150
Billion), Gold Ornaments ($100 Billion), Fashion ($3 Trillion), Beauty and Makeup
($700 Billion), Entertainment ($2.83 Trillion), Sports ($2.65 Trillion), Cargo ($2.2
Trillion), Music Copyright ($45.5 Billion), Agriculture ($4.59 Trillion), Courier Services
($485 Billion), Food Services ($2.52 Trillion), Agribusiness ($3.4 Trillion), Aviation
Insurance ($466.79 Billion), Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) ($104 Billion),
and In-flight Catering ($22 Billion), it becomes evident that Ghana can seriously tap into
these $53.846 Trillion income streams, by targeting just 1.8571 percent to achieve the
Project $1 Trillion foreign reserves goal. In addition to hard work and perseverance to tap
into these income streams, it also takes the God factor to achieve this goal, making the
National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving significant.

The airline understands that the journey of building a world-class airline is not only
technical but also spiritual. By dedicating time to prayer and thanksgiving, the company
reinforces its mission to create a people-centered enterprise rooted in divine principles.
This faith-driven philosophy fosters trust among customers and serves as a reminder that
the airline is not only a vehicle for transport but also a beacon of national pride and
purpose.

Goldstar Air’s corporate social responsibility initiatives find renewed relevance during
the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving. As the airline reflects on its progress and
challenges, it renews its commitment to empowering communities, creating jobs, and
supporting national development

.

Goldstar Air
Goldstar Air’s Chairman and CEO Eric Bannerman received heartfelt Islamic prayers and
blessings from the National Chief Imam of Ghana, His Eminence Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu
Sharubutu, during a courtesy call at his residence. The visit underscored the airline’s
Thanksgiving in appreciation for the Imam’s guidance and the community’s support,
fostering harmony and cooperation for All Ghanaians Home and Abroad.

The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving becomes a moment for reflection on the
airline’s impact on health, education, and youth empowerment across the regions of
Ghana. Staff volunteerism, charitable donations, and outreach activities underscore the
spirit of thanksgiving, reinforcing the bond between the airline and the people of Ghana.
This active role in national upliftment and Ghana’s national motto “Freedom and Justice”
aligns the company with the moral aspirations of the citizens and the spiritual energy of
the day.

“Freedom and Justice” is Ghana’s national motto, and a concept deeply rooted in the
nation’s history and identity, particularly associated with the Black Star Gate and
Independence Square in Accra. It signifies the country’s independence from British
colonial rule in 1957, and its commitment to self-determination and the well-being of its
citizens.

According to the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Goldstar Air, Eric Bannerman,
the airline sees the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Day as an opportunity to align its
strategic goals with divine providence. Executive management takes this occasion to seek
wisdom and foresight for long-term planning, route expansion, safety protocols, and
infrastructure investments. Goldstar Air’s vision to connect Ghana to the world and to
position Accra as an aviation hub is placed in divine hands, recognizing the role of prayer
in guiding leadership and organizational direction. By doing so, the airline incorporates
spiritual intelligence into its corporate governance, setting a standard for faith-based
corporate responsibility in Africa.

Furthermore, the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving provides a platform for
Goldstar Air to inspire and empower Ghanaian youth. The airline, known for its youth
empowerment and mentorship programs, will use the day to organize motivational
sessions where leaders share stories of perseverance, purpose, and the power of prayer.

These gatherings will serve as an inspiration to aspiring aviators, engineers, marketers,
and hospitality professionals. Goldstar Air believes that instilling a culture of gratitude
and faith in the next generation is vital for sustainable growth. Young people are
encouraged to dream big, stay grounded in their values, and view national service as a
divine calling.

Goldstar Air will also integrate artistic and cultural elements into its observance of the
National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving. Through music, poetry, and dance, the airline
will showcase the spiritual richness of Ghanaian heritage. Traditional drumming and
gospel choruses will blend harmoniously at prayer events, creating a vibrant atmosphere
of reverence and celebration. This cultural fusion strengthens national identity and
highlights the role of the arts in spiritual expression.

Interfaith collaboration will be another hallmark of Goldstar Air’s celebration. Religious
leaders from various faiths will be invited to lead prayers, share reflections, and bless the
work of the airline. This inclusive approach echoes Ghana’s reputation as a peaceful and
tolerant nation. It also reinforces Goldstar Air’s brand as a unifier, bringing together
people of different backgrounds toward a common destiny. The interfaith element will
serve as a reminder that, regardless of creed, all Ghanaians can unite in prayer for a
prosperous future.

Goldstar Air’s celebration of the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving will also pay
tribute to its employees. The airline will continue to acknowledge the dedication,
sacrifices, and professionalism of its workforce. Employee appreciation programs,
awards, and messages of gratitude will be shared company-wide, emphasizing that people
are the heart of the organization. Moments of silence will be observed for fallen heroes of
the aviation sector, and prayers will be offered for the safety and well-being of all
employees and their families. This culture of care and recognition strengthens morale and
fosters a deep sense of belonging within the company.

The airline’s observance of the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving will also extend
to its international stakeholders. Messages of goodwill will be shared with global partners,
foreign missions, and diaspora communities. These communications will serve as cultural
diplomacy, showcasing Ghana’s spiritual values and the airline’s commitment to global
peace and cooperation. By sharing the significance of the day, Goldstar Air will promote
a positive image of Ghanaians as a people rooted in faith, unity, and gratitude. This
positioning will enhance the country’s soft power and attract investors, tourists, and
collaborators who align with its values.

Goldstar Air will also use the occasion to pray for peace and stability in Ghana and across
Africa. As the continent faces challenges such as conflict, inequality, and climate change,
the airline recognizes the power of collective intercession. Prayer sessions will be
dedicated to the leadership of the country, the well-being of its people, and the
advancement of the African Union’s Agenda 2063. The airline positions itself as a Pan
African player committed to regional integration and continental prosperity with its Afrik
Allianz initiative, a multi modal single Air Transport Alliance connecting Africa and
beyond. By invoking divine blessings on the continent, Goldstar Air affirms its role in
Africa’s renaissance.

The celebration will become a catalyst for strengthening partnerships between the private
sector and religious institutions. Goldstar Air will collaborate with churches, mosques,
and traditional councils to organize community events that promote prayer, thanksgiving,
and national cohesion. These partnerships will enhance the airline’s social license to
operate and deepen its grassroots connections. In return, faith communities will become
ambassadors of the brand, support its mission and promote its services to their
congregations.

Goldstar Air
Goldstar Air demonstrates its commitment to giving back to the Faith foundation with a
generous donation, depicting in the picture above where Management members of
Goldstar Air were presenting items of Thanksgiving to World of life Christian Church at
the Dansoman branch in Accra. This act of kindness showcases the airline’s dedication of
supporting the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving and reveals God’s hand in all the dealings of Goldstar Air

Goldstar Air’s participation in the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving is also an
opportunity for introspection and spiritual growth. Management reflects on ethical
leadership, service excellence, and the moral compass guiding business decisions.
Workshops and retreats will be held to encourage personal development, mindfulness,
and emotional intelligence among staff. The spiritual renewal experienced during the day
will become a source of strength, clarity, and resilience for the challenges ahead. In a
fast-paced industry, moments of stillness and reflection are invaluable for sustained
excellence.

Mr. Bannerman emphasized that the management of the airline advocated last year for an
annual National Thanksgiving Day in Ghana, as a dedicated day for collective gratitude,
reflection, and appreciation of God with family and friends. Management also indicated
that this initiative would serve as a unifying force fostering national cohesion amidst the
country’s diverse cultural tapestry and stated that the day should be marked by various
activities, including interfaith services, community gatherings, and public events, which
would encourage participation across all sectors and boost tourism through travel.
Goldstar Air is giving God all the praise for the implementation of July 1st every year in
Ghana as a National Prayer and Thanksgiving Day, similar to how it is observed in the
United States and Canada.

Management further stated that implementing Thanksgiving Day in Ghana offers an opportunity to blend a global tradition with rich local customs, fostering a sense of community, gratitude, and celebration. Thanksgiving will become a cherished annual event that brings Ghanaians together in gratitude and joy, incorporating traditional elements, organizing community activities, and promoting the concept through media and education.

Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States,
as specified in a joint resolution passed by the U.S. Congress in 1941 and a proclamation
issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942. It was first celebrated in 1621. In
Canada, Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the second Monday in October. It involves
gathering with loved ones, sharing meals, and giving thanks for blessings. Adapting this
festive occasion in Ghana will bring a unique blend of cultural traditions and communal
spirit.

Data from Airlines for America (A4A) shows that more than 31 million people were
expected to fly in the United States during the 2024 Thanksgiving holiday period. The
A4A group highlights that this figure marks an all-time high for this time of year, up
from 29 million passengers in 2023 and 28 million in the pre-pandemic year of 2019.

According to A4A’s Senior Vice President of Communications, Rebecca Spicer, the
busiest travel days during the entire period are Wednesday, November 27, and Sunday,
December 1, 2024. Goldstar Air, the wings of Ghana and the belly of America hopes to
achieve similar success in Ghana by boosting tourism and making it the third-highest
foreign exchange earner.

The airline’s 24-hour service strategic steps will position Ghana as a premier aviation hub
in Africa, attracting more passengers, trade, investment, and tourists, thereby driving
economic growth and development.

Extended service hours for the airline will be for other businesses to operate 24/7 and
serve more customers, leading to increased sales and revenue. This will be especially
beneficial for industries such as retail, hospitality, and healthcare, where consumer
demand is constant. In a globalized economy, a 24-hour work schedule enables
businesses to engage with international markets across different time zones, expanding
their reach and customer base.

A 24-hour economy creates a variety of shift-based jobs, providing employment
opportunities for individuals who prefer or need non-traditional work hours. This can
include students, part-time workers, and individuals with other daytime commitments and
by offering flexible work hours, more people can enter the workforce, including those
who may have been previously unemployed or underemployed due to schedule
constraints.

Industries such as manufacturing and logistics benefit from continuous operations,
reducing downtime, and increasing output. This leads to better utilization of machinery,
facilities, and human resources.

Goldstar Air’s 24-hour operations will spread out the demand for infrastructure and
utilities, such as transportation and energy, leading to more efficient use of public
resources and reducing peak load pressures.

The airline’s round-the-clock availability will let consumers have access to goods and
services at their convenience, enhancing their overall satisfaction and accommodating the
diverse needs of consumers, including those who work non-traditional hours or have
specific timing preferences, thereby expanding the customer base.

Goldstar Air’s 24-hour service is committed to promoting trade and investment; therefore,
the airline will focus on Ghana’s central global location and rich resources to make the
country highly marketable and attractive for both international tourists and investors.
Goldstar Air’s dynamic market adaptation with other Ghanaian companies’ operations
running around the clock, companies will quickly respond to market changes, consumer
feedback, and emerging trends, staying competitive and adaptable.

Goldstar Air
Goldstar Air wings of Ghana and the Belly of America demonstrates its commitment to
giving back to the community with a generous donation to the Osu Children’s Home in
Accra. This act of kindness showcases the airline’s dedication to supporting vulnerable
children and promoting social welfare, reflecting its values of Thanksgiving, compassion
and corporate social responsibility. Ghana’s national motto “Freedom and Justice” and
United States national motto “In God We Trust” are the airline powerful source of
inspiration to work towards national goals and contribute to both countries progress.

Cities in Ghana with vibrant night economies can attract tourists seeking entertainment,
dining, and cultural experiences, leading to increased tourism revenue. This includes
night markets, late-night shows, and 24-hour attractions. Extended hospitality services,
such as hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues will cater to international tourists
arriving from different time zones, providing seamless and welcoming experiences.

The airline’s 24-hour services will create opportunities for small businesses to thrive by
offering niche services and products that cater to diverse consumer needs at all hours. By
generating jobs within communities, 24-hour operations will reduce unemployment and
support local economic development.

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play a significant role in Ghana’s
economy. In 2023, over 90 percent of business enterprises in the country were SMEs.
Moreover, MSMEs account for approximately 80 percent of total employment and
contribute over 60 percent of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), yet they are not
adequately supported by the government, therefore they must get enough support to be
able to operate 24-hour and tap into the international market.

Goldstar Air’s 24-hour initiative will encourage more businesses and services to adopt a
round-the-clock model. As a result, Ghana’s economic landscape will become more
dynamic, resilient, and inclusive, catering to the diverse needs of a globalized society.
The increased demand for workers to fill night and weekend shifts will create various
employment opportunities. This flexibility will benefit students, part-time workers, and
individuals with non-traditional schedules.

The airline will also offer flexible working hours, enabling more people, including
caregivers and individuals in remote areas, to join the workforce. This will help reduce
unemployment rates while improving the use of machinery, facilities, and human
resources.

Goldstar Air’s 24-hour ground transportation service will enhance mobility by supporting
those working early or late shifts, contributing to broader economic activity. The airline’s
app-based ride services will play a vital role in ensuring the efficiency, accessibility, and
convenience of its air travel operations.

The adoption of a 24-hour work schedule has significantly impacted the economies of
major countries such as the United Kingdom, China, France, Australia, Canada, Mexico,
and the United States. By operating around the clock, businesses and services can boost
productivity, enhance customer satisfaction, and drive economic growth.

The 24-hour operations will create jobs in most communities and reduce unemployment
rate by also creating the continuous job opportunities for the operation of emergency
services such as police, fire departments, and medical facilities, ensuring public safety
and rapid response times, which are crucial for community well-being.

The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving will always represent a renewed pledge by
Goldstar Air to serve Ghana with integrity, safety, passion, and humility. As the wings of
Ghana and the belly of America, the airline embraces its sacred responsibility to connect
people, uplift communities, and represent the spirit of Ghana to the world. The prayers,
gratitude, and reflections shared on this day serve as fuel for greater service, innovation,
and nation-building. Goldstar Air’s celebration of Ghana’s National Day of Prayer and
Thanksgiving is not just a corporate activity, it is a sacred covenant with the people and
the land it so proudly represents.

Economic developers view aviation as crucial for countries and critical drivers of income
generation and growth. The viability of Wa and Ho Airports will be strengthened by
Goldstar Air’s 24-hour economic activity and charter flights, making them major
economic drivers for the Upper West and Volta Regions of Ghana. Additionally, the
introduction of Hajj flights to and from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will create new
economic opportunities for these regional capitals, further connecting rural communities
to global commerce, supporting local businesses, and attracting new investments to these
areas.

Tamale will serve as a pivotal hub for Goldstar Air’s maintenance base, training school,
catering services, and cargo village. Plans are also underway to operate international
passenger flights between Tamale and key destinations in the Sahel region, as well as
Hajj flights to and from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Goldstar Air will initially operate flights from Kumasi to destinations such as Rome,
Madrid, Hamburg, London, Düsseldorf, Milan, and also offer Hajj flights to and from the
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Flights from Accra will include destinations such as Washington, Dubai, Lagos, Toronto,
Monrovia, Conakry, Abidjan, Guangzhou, Dakar, Banjul, Rhode Island, London, and
Freetown. Future plans include adding cities such as Miami (Florida), Atlanta (Georgia),
Chicago (Illinois), Glasgow (Scotland), Houston (Texas), and many others.

CJ removal process shouldn’t have crossed presidential desk

Former presidential spokesperson, Kwabena Agyepong Former presidential spokesperson, Kwabena Agyepong

Former Presidential Press Secretary and spokesperson to ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has expressed strong reservations about the ongoing attempt to remove Ghana’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo, describing it as baseless and a potential threat to the independence of the judiciary.

Speaking in an interview with Joy News on the sidelines of the 2025 Martyrs Day Celebration on Monday, June 30, Agyepong emphasized that the 1992 Constitution sets a high threshold for the removal of the Chief Justice, requiring the commission of a grave offence.

However, he questioned the legitimacy and credibility of the current petitioners, saying, “What surprised me is that they are faceless petitioners. I have heard of something called Shining Star, I am told it is not even registered. I don’t know them, we don’t know them—and then one Daniel Ofori.”

He added that the content of the petition, from what he had heard, did not meet the constitutional requirement of a “grave” offence. “The details don’t convince me that it passes the test of being grave enough to remove the Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana. That is my personal view.”

Agyepong further questioned why the petition was allowed to progress beyond the President’s office, asserting that it should not have made it past the initial review.

“He [the President] is the one who can read the petition first and decide whether it is worth moving it to the Council of State,” he said, adding that the issues raised amounted to “very minor infractions.”

Referring to the Chief Justice’s own public response to the matter, Agyepong said the press conference clarified much of the confusion and further underscored the frivolity of the petition. He warned that allowing such actions to continue could set a dangerous precedent.

“If we are not careful, it will constitute a certain assault on the judiciary. It is something that is worrying,” he stated, urging President Akufo-Addo to heed the Ghana Bar Association’s call to dismiss the petition.

“For me, I think that this should not have started in the first place,” Agyepong concluded.

Incoming Afreximbank President downplays Fitch Ratings’ downgrade

0

Dr George Elombi, incoming President of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) Dr George Elombi, incoming President of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank)

Dr George Elombi, the incoming President of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), has downplayed concerns over Fitch Ratings’ recent downgrade of the institution, attributing the negative outlook to differences in loan classification methodologies rather than fundamental weaknesses.

In his first major interview with the Ghana News Agency after securing a near-unanimous shareholder approval for his leadership role, Dr Elombi said Fitch’s assessment was based on “old methodology”, which did not align with current international banking standards.

This was ahead of his media engagement today (Saturday) to close the 32nd Annual Meetings of the Afreximbank, held in Abuja, Nigeria.

Fitch, earlier in June, downgraded Afreximbank to BBB- from BBB, largely due to non-performing loans (NPLs), flagging concerns that the Cairo-based bank’s loans to Zambia and Ghana may need to take losses in ongoing debt restructuring exercises.

However, Dr Elombi said the downgrade was “largely just a discipline” that fluctuated over time, emphasising that the rating action was not based on any fundamental problems with the bank’s operations.

“We are operating on a new methodology, which is the International Financial Standards Rule Nine,” the incoming Afreximbank President noted, explaining that those standards were what banks all over the world had adopted.

He emphasised the robustness of the bank’s fundamental financial metrics, including liquidity position, internal capital generation, reliable shareholder capital support, and capital ratios.

He noted that Fitch’s own report acknowledged that the problematic loans would likely be resolved within 18 to 24 months, suggesting the assets were not permanently impaired despite facing temporary difficulties.

Fitch calculated that the ratio of Afreximbank’s NPLs exceeded the six per cent ‘high’ risk threshold, but Dr Elombi maintained that the calculation did not reflect the bank’s true risk profile when assessed under current international standards.

Dr Elombi, a Cameroonian national, succeeds Professor Benedict Oramah, as the next President of Afreximbank, effective September 2025.

The seasoned executive has been with the bank since 1996, rising through the ranks to become Executive Vice President, Governance, Legal and Corporate Services.

The bank says Dr Elombi brings a deep understanding of the Bank’s mission and structure, having played a central role in shaping Afreximbank Group’s structure, legal and institutional frameworks, expanding its capital base, and leading crisis response efforts across Africa and the Caribbean.

“I see Afreximbank as a force for industrialising Africa and for regaining the dignity of Africans wherever they are,” Dr Elombi said during his acceptance remarks.

Kwasi Sibo receives hero’s welcome in Krofom after helping Real Oviedo return to La Liga

Sibo (L) greeting a fan during his welcoming Sibo (L) greeting a fan during his welcoming

After playing his part in writing a new chapter for Real Oviedo, Ghanaian midfielder Kwasi Sibo has returned home to a hero’s welcome in Krofom, a suburb of Kumasi, where family, friends and football lovers gathered to celebrate one of their own.

Sibo, who joined Real Oviedo in July 2024 on a two-year deal, has quickly become a name mentioned with pride.

Over the just-ended season, he proved his worth in Spain’s fiercely competitive second division, playing 42 matches across all competitions, scoring a goal and providing an assist.

More importantly, he anchored Oviedo’s midfield as they clawed their way back to La Liga after a painful 24-year wait.

In Oviedo’s promotion playoff final against Mirandés, Sibo was at the heart of the action, starting the match and battling for 108 minutes before being substituted deep into extra time.

The night ended with Oviedo sealing a 3-1 win after extra time, enough to edge the tie 3-2 on aggregate and spark wild celebrations in Asturias and back home in Ghana.

That same joy followed him back to Kumasi, where he made his first stop in his hometown, Krofom.

Waiting for him were scores of locals who lined the streets, cheering and hailing his name.

Some proudly waved a special flyer they had printed just for him, a colourful montage of Sibo in action for Oviedo, symbolising the pride he’s brought to the community.

Amid the cheers and songs, the 27-year-old midfielder walked along the street and exchanged handshakes and hugs, taking time to greet the people who shaped the boy before he became the player.

Mahama has to be mindful of how his appointees deliver – Frank Adu Jnr warns

0

Former Cal Bank CEO, Frank Adu Jnr, has cautioned President John Mahama to pay close attention to how his appointees perform in office.

The renowned banker warns that political loyalty without meritocracy will cripple the ability to deliver on campaign promises.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday, June 30, Mr. Adu said the early signs are positive, particularly with the recent stability of the cedi, but stressed that challenges lie ahead if underperformance is tolerated within the administration.

“It is early days yet,” he said. “I think every time there’s a change of government, the government seems to have a period of some honeymoon period, so to speak. And people are accommodating, etcetera. I think that President Mahama made promises, and the thing for him to do is to try and keep the promises.”

Pointing to current economic conditions, he noted, “Luckily, we’ve had some stability, particularly in the currency. There’s been an appreciation of the cedi, and it seems to have stabilised around ¢11-12, so it allows for planning, etc. Hopefully that continues.”

But Mr. Adu was clear that the test for the Mahama administration lies beyond macroeconomic indicators.

“The difficulty is in keeping those promises, and the kind of political system we are operating in this country basically forces contestants to make promises, and then when they come, they have a difficulty meeting those promises, and that is where he begins to have the challenge.”

He pointed to a structural problem with political appointments that undermines performance.

“President Mahama has to be mindful of how his appointees deliver. It’s going to be very difficult, and one of the reasons being the processes you go through to become president and then the appointments you make.”

According to him, the lack of accountability among political appointees is a long-standing issue.

“I have not seen or heard in the past probably 18 years, any minister of a sector or a president criticise or question an appointee for non-performance. And you know why? It’s because all these appointees are political affiliates.”

He explained that performance is often overlooked because of campaign loyalty.

“If the person, let’s say any of the parastatals — let’s say VRA or ECG — the CEO, being a political appointee, is not performing, now, this political appointee was part of the whole campaign train of the president when he was campaigning.

“He puts him there, and the person not performing, it’s very difficult for the sector minister, who is also a broker appointee, to take on… the MD of VRA for non-performance.”

Instead of confronting failure, ministers often defend it.

“Anytime there’s a problem in any sector, any ministry, you find the party, the minister defending the position or the mismanagement or whatever it is. I have never come across any minister who queries, criticises, says, ‘I will have you fired’, or fires the CEO of a state… That is a problem.”

He blamed the system’s failings on the absence of merit-based appointments.

“What we are practising is not a meritocracy. The more noise you make whilst in the position, the likely your chance of becoming a CEO or ambassador or a minister or something like that. That is not a meritocracy.”

Mr. Adu warned that without accountability, no government can perform.

“Once you have a situation like that, then it’s going to be very difficult for the government in power to perform. If you are not held to account for your deeds as a minister or as a political appointee, it means that you can underperform.”

He added that this issue is not unique to one particular administration.

“That happened under Akufo-Addo. You take the SIGA companies, all these parastatals — which one of them performed? Maybe SIC, they paid dividends, etcetera.”

The former Managing Director of GIHOC Distilleries, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, has been granted bail in the sum of GHS500,000 with two sureties, following his arrest in connection with the alleged theft of company vehicles.

His bail was granted on Monday, June 30, after he made an appearance at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters, where he had been held.

The Ghana Police Service confirmed the arrest during a press briefing led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Lydia Yaako Donkor.

She stated that the arrest was carried out after an official complaint was lodged by GIHOC Distilleries.

According to her, the petition alleged that Mr. Jumah had unlawfully taken vehicles belonging to the state-owned beverage company.

She further confirmed that three of the vehicles in question had been retrieved by the police.

“We received the petition to the effect that some vehicles, which were the property of that company, have been stolen by the said Maxwell Kofi Jumah. He is in our custody at the CID headquarters, and he is assisting in an investigation.

“I must say that as of this afternoon, we have retrieved three vehicles; the said vehicles that were stolen by him have been retrieved, so he is really assisting us in the investigation, and we will take it up from there,” she said.

Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor has been re-elected as the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) for the next three years.

This was when almost 700 journalists in good standing went to the polls on Monday to elect new national and regional officers to lead the journalists association.

There were a total of 12 candidates who battled for six available national executive positions, while 49 others contested for regional positions.

Charles Yao Mawusi, a late entrant in the presidential race posed a threat to Albert Dwumfuor’s re-election bid at a time Mr Dwumfuor thought it was almost a concluded unanimous decision for a second term.

Dwumfuor had to re-strategise his campaign with endorsements.

After the collation of results from all polling stations across the country, Albert Dwumfuor retained the presidency with 445 votes representing 64.49 percent as against Charles Yao Mawusi’s 245 votes representing 35.51 percent.

Rebecca Ekpe from the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) was elected as the new Vice President beating Mary Mensah from the Graphic Communications Group Ltd with 414 votes to 272.

Rebecca Ekpe moved from the Public Affairs position to Vice President to take over from Linda Asante Agyei whose tenure had ended.

Suleiman Mustapha also from Graphic Communications Group Ltd was elected as the new Organising Secretary with Zadok Kwame Gyesi coming up as the new Public Affairs Officer. Mustapha won with 365 votes against Maxwell Kudekor’s 321 votes.

Zadok Kwame Gyesi beat Caesar Abagali with 431 votes against 253.

For the General Secretary position, Dominic Hlodzi from GBC was elected to take over from Edmund Kofi Yeboah who has finished his two terms. Dominic Hlodzi beat Akwasi Agyeman from the Multimedia Group Limited with 443 votes against 247.

Dominic had also moved from the Organising Secretary position to General Secretary.

For the Treasurer position Bertha Badu-Agyei ensured that position continued to remain a stronghold for staff from the Ghana News Agency (GNA) as they have held that position for more than 20 years. Bertha beat Theodora A. Amedetor Yakanu from the GBC with 401 votes against 287 votes.

Just because you are older doesn’t mean you deserve respect

Singer Peter Okoye has responded to his older brother Jude after the music executive made fun of him, singer Cynthia Morgan, and other musicians who he claimed had left his record label and gone broke.

The music executive knocked Peter, his former signee Cynthia Morgan, and other former signees in a post he shared on June 27. He claimed that they became avaricious after making money off of his platform, left his label, went bankrupt, and are now looking for someone to blame. He said that he was accused of a number of things, including money laundering, and that he expected all of these things to break him, but he is refusing to be blackmailed or comply with demands. Read here.

Peter has responded to this on social media.

In an Instagram post this afternoon, Peter, who described Jude as an “Agbaya,” made the case that respect is something that must be earned and is never bestowed. He rejected Jude’s assertion that he had shoulder-supported him during his tenure as PSquare manager.  According to Peter, Jude worked as a manager and was fired, just like the two people who came before him.

Peter said that since going solo and leaving the PSquare band, his journey has been more peaceful and fruitful on both a personal and financial level.

His post reads

‘’JUST BECAUSE YOU’RE OLDER, DOESN’T MEAN YOU DESERVE RESPECT. RESPECT IS EARNED NOT GIVEN. Calling me broke or wishing I was broke has been your wish. These are the exact same words you told the EFCC officials. And you ended up getting locked up in prison. Of course, again you have to come up with another narrative “Broke” let’s set the record straight, you were shouldering who? May be them but not me. Agbaya, you were employed as a manager by Peter and Paul PSQUARE, and you got sacked the same as the other 2 managers before you. Period!

I understand this may not sit well with some people, but truth be told, aside from my businesses, what I now earn on my own as a solo artiste today is more than what I used to earn after splitting three ways as PSQUARE plus the so-called manager. I am talking about both shows and endorsements. It really makes me question what’s the point of sharing with people who stole from you, betrayed you, and still discriminate against your efforts!?

This solo journey has been a blessing—more rewarding and profitable, both financially and personally, no doubt. And it has also brought peace of mind. And if you don’t relate or it doesn’t make sense to you, no worries—it’s not meant to. But I am grateful. But again, despite being in court! Una never still answer the question, UNA THIEF ABI UNA NO THIEF ? Ndi ori.

I have stopped playing nice and being the matured one while getting disrespected!

I started treating people exactly how they treat me.

Respect me, I respect you!

Ignore me, I ignore you!

Cross me, I cut you off, simple.

Life isn’t about begging people for fair treatment!

It’s about matching energy;

it is what it is. Tit for tat!

I stayed real, I stayed strong, and I stopped letting people walk over me. PETER OKOYE.”

Pan-African Progressive Front inaugurates historic headquarters in Accra

0

The Paramount Chief of the Essikado Traditional Area, Nana Kobina Nketsia V, captured the essence of the Pan-African Progressive Front (PPF) at the commissioning of its new headquarters in Accra, urging African leaders and citizens to foster inclusiveness and a communal spirit in the continent’s path to development.

At a memorable ceremony on Monday, June 30, 2025, the traditional ruler and renowned Pan-Africanist emphasised the need for authenticity, humility, and conscious leadership in African governance to help the continent catch up with the rest of the world.

“It is not African to drive big cars and carry grand titles while the man on the street is suffering. Let us share in the pain of others. We must question everything we are told,” Nana Nketsia said in his keynote address, before leading other dignitaries to officially inaugurate the grand PPF headquarters in the heart of Accra.

“Do not accept things blindly. Be aware, be conscious, and lead with compassion. That is what true African leadership looks like,” the respected chief added.

The inauguration marked a major milestone for the Pan-African organisation, with various speakers describing the event as a turning point in the ongoing struggle for African unity and self-determination.

The launch drew a strong presence of dignitaries, activists, intellectuals, and cultural figures, who defied the rains to celebrate a movement rooted in the legacy of Pan-Africanism and committed to shaping Africa’s future.

Dr Eric George Alexander Don-Arthur, a former presidential advisor and member of the PPF International Organising Committee, described the opening of the PPF headquarters as a monumental step forward for the Pan-African cause. He expressed pride in Ghana’s role as host of the new secretariat and called it a timely boost to the continent’s collective aspirations.

“Today marks a significant milestone in our journey toward promoting Pan-Africanism, unity, and progress across the length and breadth of our continent,” he said.

“We are reminded of the rich history and legacy of Pan-Africanism. From the early pioneers who fought for independence and self-determination to the modern-day champions of African unity, we stand on the shoulders of these giants,” Dr Don-Arthur added.

Accra is set to host the 80th anniversary of the Fifth Pan-African Congress in October this year. Held in Manchester in 1945, the historic Congress was a defining moment in Africa’s liberation history, bringing together iconic figures such as Kwame Nkrumah, George Padmore, W.E.B. Du Bois, Jomo Kenyatta, and Hastings Banda—whose advocacy and activism helped ignite a wave of independence movements across the continent.

“This year’s commemoration is not just about remembering the past,” Dr Don-Arthur said. “It is about rekindling the fire of freedom and working toward total unification, economic emancipation, and rapid development. The October event will be a rallying point for all progressive voices in Africa and the diaspora.”

Dr Abu Sakara, a former Ghanaian presidential aspirant, urged African leaders and citizens alike to renew their commitment to a united and self-reliant continent. He emphasised that true liberation would only be achieved when Africans fully take ownership of their natural wealth and chart their own course.

“We are committed to working hard to realise this dream. Our focus is on social justice, cultural pride, and building a stronger, more prosperous Africa. We want a continent where every individual can thrive by harnessing our vast resources for the benefit of our people. Pan-Africanism remains at the heart of our collective fight for liberation and self-determination.”

In another solidarity message, former Minister for Information Fritz Baffour noted that the struggles of many African migrants attempting perilous journeys across deserts and seas should serve as a wake-up call. He said such desperation is a tragic symbol of lost hope, contrasting sharply with the optimism of the early post-independence era.

The concise ceremony was masterfully compered by veteran journalist, Pan-African activist, and PPF Planning Committee member, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. The event featured cultural interludes, including a powerful performance by Oswald OkanTEY, who used his artistry to re-echo the call for Africans to rise and fight for their rights.

The PPF exists to promote the Pan-African agenda set forth by the Fifth Pan-African Congress in Manchester in 1945. It also aims to unite anti-imperialist forces—including political parties, organised labour, youth and student groups, women’s movements, cultural organisations, and environmental groups across the African continent.

As part of efforts to unify Africa, the PPF convened an online forum on June 17, 2025, bringing together key Pan-African organisations. Participants resolved to petition the African Union (AU) to demand genuine compensation from Western countries for historical injustices.

Govt to outdoor cooperative mining scheme to provide alternative livelihood

0

Ing. Frank Pedro Asare, the National Coordinator of the National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Programme (NAELP), has announced the government’s intention to introduce a cooperative mining schemes in mining communities across the country.

According to him, the move is part of efforts by government to offer alternative livelihoods to locals in mining areas who are forced to embrace illegal mining as a means of livelihood.

Speaking at a press engagement on Monday, June 30, Mr Asare explained that one of the major causes of illegal mining is the lack of viable job opportunities for the teeming unemployed youth in rural communities.

This he said, is one of the key concerns of the incoming cooperative mining scheme, which forms part of measures to deal decisively with galamsey.

“Once cabinet approves it, the existing National Alternative Employment Livelihood Programme (NAELP) will now be known as the Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (COMSDEP), which will rectify the shortfalls of both NAELP and community mining in a more comprehensive manner with six different layers to offer alternative economic avenues to those engage in illegal mining”, Engineer Asare explained in the local Twi dialect.

He further added that, when the cooperative mining scheme finally comes into force, it will compliment other interventions by government such as the National Anti-illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) to help address galamsey.

He also disclosed that the new cooperative mining scheme will include land reclamation as part of its operations, as well the non-usage of mercury and other harmful chemicals in mining operations.

At the moment, it is estimated that about 16% of the Ghana’s land reserves have been depleted due to the activities of illegal miners.

This is in addition to the pollution of notable water bodies across major flashpoints in the Ashanti, Central, Western North, Eastern and other regions nationwide.

Meanwhile government says it is working around the clock to combat the menace through a five-prong approach currently being implemented by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

This approach includes the reformation of the mining licensing regime, reclamation of depleted lands, strengthening of law enforcement, deepening of education and the provision of alternative livelihoods.

Ghana records 26 new Mpox cases, total rises to 45

0

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has reported 26 new confirmed Mpox cases, bringing the total infections to 45 as of May 31, 2025.

No new deaths have been recorded, keeping the death toll at zero. Currently, two patients remain admitted.

The GHS attributes the recent rise in cases to enhanced surveillance, including active contact tracing and increased public awareness.

These efforts aim to identify and isolate cases quickly within communities.

GHS reaffirmed its commitment to early detection and containment, urging the public to practice preventive measures such as avoiding close contact with symptomatic individuals, maintaining hygiene, and seeking medical care if symptoms appear.

Partner Ghana’s development banks to aid industrialisation agenda …Exim Bank Ghana CEO urges China

0

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Exim Bank Ghana, Mr Sylvester Mensah, has appealed to China to partner with Ghana’s development banks to provide critical funding aimed at accelerating the country’s industrialisation agenda.

He said China could co-fund the development banks in Ghana and provide credit lines to them to build their financial capacity lend to Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the country.

Speaking at the second day of the Ghana China Business Summit 2025 in Accra on Tuesday, Mr Mensah emphasised the need for strategic financial collaboration to empower local industries, particularly SMEs, which form the backbone of Ghana’s economy.

The five-day programme which ended on Friday was organised by SINO-Africa Group, the Government of Ghana and Perfect World Company Limited.

It was attended by about 120 investors and delegates to explore investment opportunities in the country and deepen the trade and bilateral relationship between Ghana and China.

“Without resilient and competitive SMEs, our goals of export diversification, value addition, and regional trade integration will remain out of reach,”Mr Mensah stated.

He said SMEs in the country faced difficulties in accessing affordable financing, describing it as a major hurdle to industrial growth.

“This is not merely a challenge; it is an opportunity for innovative financing solutions, inclusive financial partnerships, and forward-looking institutions to rise to the occasion,” he said.

He called for technology transfer and joint ventures to enhance local processing, packaging, and manufacturing capabilities.

“We welcome partnerships with Chinese financial institutions, state-owned enterprises, and private investors to integrate Ghanaian products into Chinese and global supply chains,” he said.

The Exim Bank Ghana CEO said the government’s economic transformation policies, such as the government’s Big Push Agenda and the 24-Hour Economic Policy, were aimed to position SMEs as engines of job creation and industrial transformation.

“Our mandate is to support Ghana’s transition into an export-led economy, and SMEs are central to this vision,” Mensah noted. He cited Exim Bank’s existing efforts in financing and strengthening SMEs, adding that partnerships with institutions like China would significantly amplify these efforts.

Mr Mensah expressed the hope the summit would come out with actionable outcomes, and urged the participants to move beyond discussions and forge tangible partnerships.

“The highlight of this summit is not just our conversations here today, but how we network, engage, and develop bankable projects that can be co-financed or equity-backed,” he said.

He expressed optimism about the potential for collaboration, given the presence of over 70 top Chinese companies and key Ghanaian investors at the event.

Mr Mensah reiterated Exim Bank Ghana’s commitment to enabling SMEs to thrive not only as producers but as exporters, and not just as survivors but as innovators.

Two ‘stolen’ cars were legally owned by Ex-GIHOC boss

GIHOC Distilleries former managing director Maxwell Kofi Jumah GIHOC Distilleries former managing director Maxwell Kofi Jumah

GIHOC Distilleries’ former managing director Maxwell Kofi Jumah’s lawyer, Akwasi Owusu Fordjour, has refuted claims that his client misappropriated corporate cars from the state-owned booze company.

This comes after the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service revealed that Mr. Jumah had stolen automobiles from the state-owned beverage distributor.

The police confirmed that three of the cars mentioned earlier had been recovered.

On Monday, June 30, Akwasi Owusu Fordjour defended his client’s actions and clarified the vehicles’ ownership status in an interview with Channel One Newsroom.

He claims that two of the cars that were recovered belong to Mr. Jumah privately and that there is proof that they were obtained lawfully.

Even though it was registered in GIHOC’s name, his client did not have the third car when it was taken into custody.

“Two of the vehicles belong to Maxwell Kofi Jumah, and they are not state vehicles. These vehicles are in his name. He procured them through legal means, and we have documents to support those claims. The other one is in the name of GIHOC; however, per his conditions of service, he could have triggered Clause XII of his conditions of service in obtaining that, but Toyota Tekoa has been in possession of GIHOC for about a month or two now.

“What was in his custody was a Hyundai Genesis and an Audi, which is a salvaged vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the premises of GIHOC this morning by my very good self and the Police CID. That vehicle has not been on the road for eight good years. So there is more to it, so I am sure after investigations, we can speak properly to it,” citinewsroom.com quoted him as saying.

Following his arrest in relation to the suspected theft of company vehicles, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, the former Managing Director of GIHOC Distilleries, was given bail in the amount of GHS500,000 with two sureties.

He appeared at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters, where he had been detained, and was released on bail on Monday, June 30.

New anti-galamsey secretariat is another expensive failure in the making

0

Ing. Wisdom Edem Gomashie Ing. Wisdom Edem Gomashie

Mining consultant, Ing Wisdom Edem Gomashie, has expressed strong reservations about the government’s newly launched National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), describing the initiative as redundant and potentially another “money-making venture” with limited real impact on the fight against illegal mining.

In an open letter addressed to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Ing. Gomashie argued that NAIMOS represents a repetition of past efforts that yielded little success.

“This new establishment, to me, is old wine in a new bottle,” he wrote, referencing the series of anti-galamsey operations initiated under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

He cited the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), “Galamstop,” “Operation Vanguard,” and “Operation Halt II” as well-intentioned but ultimately ineffective efforts, noting that many of these operations were hampered by information leaks, weak enforcement mechanisms, and a lack of decentralized, real-time response systems.

“In real time, sending troops from Accra to go arrest illegal miners on the Pra at Beposo was a charade. Information leaks got to the miners seconds after boardroom decisions were taken,” he observed.

Gomashie criticised the continued centralization of the anti-galamsey fight in Accra, stating that such top-down approaches have repeatedly failed to deliver results and instead create opportunities for a few individuals to profit at the expense of the taxpayer.

“Any initiative that seeks to fight illegal mining from Accra is a money-making venture for some few people with little impact,” he stated bluntly.

The mining expert expressed disappointment that the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and its agencies had not adopted key recommendations made in the final stages of the previous administration.

Among these was the proposal to establish a Security Attaché at the Ministry, an embedded and decentralised enforcement unit working in tandem with the Ghana Police Service and supported by the high-tech surveillance infrastructure at the Minerals Commission.

He noted that such reforms would ensure real-time intelligence gathering, localized enforcement, and continuity beyond political transitions.

“The military or other security services are not co-terminus with the NPP, you humbly get what I mean,” he pointed out.

While he refrained from completely dismissing NAIMOS, Gomashie called on the current administration to reconsider its approach and build on lessons learned over the past eight years rather than duplicating structures that have already proven ineffective.

“I wish you well,” he concluded, “but let us not waste more public resources reinventing the wheel. Let’s work with the recommendations that already exist.”

His remarks come at a time when government efforts to tackle illegal mining are under renewed scrutiny, and they add to a growing chorus of calls for more sustainable, locally grounded solutions to Ghana’s long-running galamsey crisis.

Ghanaian goalie Fredrick Asare set for Durban City move

0

Ghanaian goalkeeper Fredrick Asare Ghanaian goalkeeper Fredrick Asare

Durban City has completed all travel arrangements and formalities for the anticipated transfer of Ghanaian goalkeeper Fredrick Asare, formerly of Asante Kotoko.

This move paves the way for Asare to seamlessly transition to the South African football scene, marking a huge step in his career as he seeks new opportunities abroad.

Asare’s flight ticket has been issued, with his departure from Ghana scheduled for July 1, 2025.

Upon his arrival in Durban, Asare is expected to undergo a brief assessment before potentially signing a formal contract with the club.

This follows his impressive performances in the Ghana Premier League.

Asare’s departure from Ghana comes after his recent exit from Asante Kotoko, where he was a key figure between the sticks.

During the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season, Asare made notable contributions, including keeping seven clean sheets in 15 league appearances and playing a role in their MTN FA Cup victory.

His experience and talent have clearly caught the attention of South African scouts, leading to this promising opportunity.

The move to Durban City is viewed as a potential revival for Asare, who previously played for Accra Lions before joining Kotoko.

With the South African second-tier side showing strong interest, the goalkeeper’s next steps could be pivotal in elevating his career and gaining further international exposure.

The upcoming assessment will be crucial in determining whether he secures a permanent position with the team.

Fiery bus collision in Tanzania kills 37, sparks national mourning

0

A tragic highway collision in northern Tanzania has the nation in mourning after two passenger buses crashed and erupted into flames, killing at least 37 people and injuring 30 others.

The deadly incident occurred Saturday evening in the Sabasaba area along the Moshi–Tanga highway, a remote stretch in the Kilimanjaro region. The wreckage was engulfed in fire, making immediate identification of the victims difficult.

Authorities have yet to confirm the names or nationalities of those who perished.

Reacting to the catastrophe, President Samia Suluhu Hassan offered her condolences in a heartfelt message released on Sunday.

“I send my heartfelt condolences to Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner Nurdin Babu, the bereaved families, relatives, and friends,” she said in an AP report. “May God grant peace to the souls of the departed and a quick recovery to the injured. May He comfort and strengthen their families during this difficult time.”

President Hassan also used the moment to reiterate the urgent need for road safety enforcement, noting that deadly road crashes continue to devastate Tanzanian households.

Despite numerous government campaigns over the years aimed at reducing traffic fatalities, preventable road deaths remain a recurring challenge across the country.

‘I was deeply infatuated with Kojo Antwi but he thought I was joking’ – Paulina Oduro

Ghanaian Highlife musician and actress Paulina Oduro

Ghanaian Highlife musician and actress Paulina Oduro has opened up on her long-standing admiration for legendary musician Kojo Antwi.

Speaking in an interview on Adom TV on June 29, 2025, she expressed that she was deeply infatuated with Kojo Antwi at one point in her life, but when she confessed her feelings, he simply brushed it off.

“I was totally besotted with Kojo Antwi. I knew him personally; he was a friend. I told him how I felt, but he laughed and said I should stop joking,” she recalled.

Paulina explained that although she was disappointed by his reaction, she chose not to pursue it any further out of respect for their friendship and his existing relationship at the time.

“I felt disappointed, but I didn’t want to force anything because I valued our friendship. Back then, he was in a relationship, though not yet married, so I held back,” she said

When asked if her decision was to avoid interfering in Kojo Antwi’s relationship, she clarified that wasn’t her primary reason.

“That wasn’t really it. I just think he didn’t take me seriously. I was also in a relationship then. I knew it wouldn’t work between us, but I still wanted him to know how much I admired him,” she said.

She further revealed that during that period, she was married to guitarist Alfred Bannerman, with whom she shares three children.

“At the time, I was married to Alfred Bannerman. We have three kids together. Though we’re no longer married, we remain very good friends,” she added.

National Security Transactions Under Akufo-Addo Exposed in Court

What not to wear at the airport

0

illustration: picture: pexels

Let’s talk about the runway that matters just as much as the one on the plane—your airport style!

If you’ve made it through the overwhelming experience of having to strip off your shoes or jewellery at airport security, you’ll know the struggle. After becoming totally flustered, hastily removing and gripping clothes back on again, you’re left wishing you had just worn something else – something easier.

1. Too much jewellery

We’re all about that bling, but too much of a good thing can lead to a serious case of airport security. A metal detector’s beeping is enough to spark panic and anxiety – you don’t need that when you are about to travel. Avoid a jewellery-induced drama by keeping it minimal. A chic statement piece or two is enough to keep you looking fabulous without setting off alarms.

2. Complicated footwear

Kick the strappy shoes. Why put yourself through the struggle of removing sandals that require a degree to undo quickly? You don’t want to be stuck with your own personal Rubik’s Cube at airport security. Keep it simple with easy-on, easy-off shoes to breeze through security like a pro.

Picture: Unsplash

3. Belts with metal buckles

If you’re about to board a long-haul flight, wearing a tight belt is not the best idea. Plus, a flashy metal buckle can quickly turn into an airport security headache. If you really need to wear one, look for a fabric or leather clip belt.

4. Tight clothing

Comfort is key for longer journeys. Tight jeans and belts can cut off circulation; they’re not exactly first class when it comes to comfort. Instead, opt for breathable fabrics and comfy threads, so you’re ready to tackle any in-flight yoga poses or unexpected airport sprints.

5. Too many layers

It’s important to keep the temperature of your destination in mind, but piling on more layers than a cake just leads to unnecessary drama. Stripping down at security, reassembling yourself, then doing it all over again in the plane. Simplify your life with a versatile jacket or sweater that can handle the temperature twists and turns without the hassle.

Minority Caucus condemns EOCO over arrest and bail conditions of former NAFCO CEO

0

By Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, June 30, GNA— The New Patriotic Party Minority Caucus in Parliament has condemned the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over the arrest and bail conditions imposed on Alhaji Abdul Hannan Wahab, former CEO of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO).

Alhaji Wahab and his wife were arrested on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, in Accra and Tamale for alleged tax evasion, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

A statement issued by the Deputy Minority Leader, Madam Patricia Appiagyei,

and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Monday, said, “You may control the present, but history will judge you.”

It expressed concerns over the mode of arrest, describing it as “harsh” and “humiliating.”

The statement emphasized that the bail conditions were excessive, amounting to financial punishment before trial.

“We find this unacceptable. Bail is not supposed to be a punishment or a pre-conviction sentence.

“These conditions, by all standards, are excessive. What is the justification for bail conditions that amount to financial punishment before trial?” it asked.

According to the statement, Alhaji Wahab was granted bail of GH¢50 million with two sureties, both of whom must justify their worth in assets matching the full bail amount, while his wife was granted GH¢30 million bail with similar conditions.

The statement noted that the Minority Caucus believed that the arrest and bail conditions were part of an alleged broader pattern of political persecution under the current administration.

“This is not about justice—it is persecution,” the statement said.

“When institutions become tools for settling political scores, we lose our democracy,” it said.

The Minority is calling for an immediate review of the bail conditions, insisting that they be “fair, lawful, and not disguised punishment.”

It also urged civil society, religious leaders, and the media to speak out against the abuse of power.

“You may control the present, but history will judge your conduct,” the statement warned, addressing EOCO’s Acting Executive Director, Mr. Raymond Archer.

“Ghana is bigger than any political party, and the abuse of institutional power will not be forgotten,” it said.

Albert Dwumfour re-elected GJA President

0

Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor has been handed a fresh mandate to lead the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) after securing a decisive win in the association’s national elections held on Monday, June 30.

Dwumfuor, who first assumed the presidency in 2022, received 445 votes — representing 64.49% of the total valid ballots — to fend off a strong challenge from Charles Yao Mawusi, who polled 245 votes (35.51%).

The election, which saw over 800 accredited members casting their votes across the country, also filled five other national executive positions, alongside multiple regional leadership slots.

Though a latecomer to the race, Mawusi’s entry unexpectedly revitalized the contest, forcing the incumbent to recalibrate his campaign strategy and rally fresh endorsements to maintain his footing.

In other results, Rebecca Ekpe of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation was elected Vice President, succeeding Linda Asante. Ekpe, who previously served as Public Affairs Officer, defeated Mary Mensah of the Graphic Communications Group.

Suleiman Mustapha, also of the Graphic Communications Group, emerged victorious as Organising Secretary, while Zadok Kwame Gyesi clinched the Public Affairs Officer position.

In total, 12 candidates vied for six national executive roles, while 49 others competed for regional offices — underscoring a competitive and widely participated election cycle.

The newly elected executives will serve a three-year term, with expectations high for them to steer the GJA through critical reforms and advocacy in the evolving media landscape.

Remember innocent voters killed in Techiman too and bring their murderers to book—Franklin Cudjoe

0

President of policy think tank IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, is of the view that as Ghana celebrates the murder of some judges on Martyrs Day, voters who were killed in Techiman during the 2020 elections must also be remembered.

According to him, such state-sponsored killing must not be forgotten, just as the murder of some judges on June 30 has not been forgotten all these years.

Ofori-Atta diagnosed with cancer

0

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has been diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing treatment, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has revealed.

At a press conference held on Monday, June 2, 2025, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng disclosed that Mr. Ofori-Atta remains a wanted person after failing to appear for questioning despite several invitations.

According to Mr. Agyebeng, the former Minister’s lawyers communicated the development to the OSP, submitting medical documents indicating an “unexpected deterioration” in his health, alongside confirmation of a recent cancer diagnosis.

The legal team has proposed that Mr. Ofori-Atta be allowed to provide a caution statement virtually, citing provisions under the Electronic Transactions Act.

However, Mr. Agyebeng expressed skepticism about the credibility of the request, hinting that it could be a tactic to evade justice.

“Legal representation is no substitute for the personal attendance of a suspect in a criminal investigation,” he stated firmly.

Mr. Ofori-Atta was first declared a “fugitive from justice” in February 2025 after repeatedly failing to honour invitations by the OSP. He is under investigation in connection with several high-profile corruption cases.

These include the controversial revenue assurance contract with Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML), financial dealings involving the construction of the National Cathedral, and other procurement and expenditure issues that occurred during his tenure as Finance Minister from 2017 to 2024.

The OSP has yet to determine whether it will accept the proposal for a virtual appearance.

Ghana confirms 14 new Mpox cases, total reaches 133

0

By Linda Naa Deide Aryeetey

Accra, June 30, GNA – The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has recorded 14 new Mpox infections, bringing the national case count to 133.

In its latest update, the Service reported no hospitalisations or deaths, and indicated that as of June 26, cases had been confirmed in 46 districts across 10 regions.

According to the GHS, Mpox cases have been detected in 16 districts in Greater Accra, 10 districts in Western Region, five districts in Western North, four districts in Central, three each in Ashanti and Volta, two in Eastern Region and one district each in Bono, North East, and Northern Regions

The Service stated it remained vigilant across all 16 regions and was actively monitoring through its national surveillance system.

It added that regional health directorates had activated public health measures, including contact tracing, to curb further spread.

GHS said it was working closely with the Ministry of Health to ensure all necessary interventions are in place.

Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Director General of the GHS, earlier this month assured the public that there was no cause for widespread alarm.

He noted that Ghana’s public health system was vigilant and that existing protocols for detecting, managing, and controlling infectious diseases were being rigorously applied.

The GHS urged the public to maintain good hygiene, avoid close contact with symptomatic individuals, and report suspected cases promptly to health facilities.

“We have the capacity and expertise to manage this situation and prevent a larger outbreak,” it said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting public health.

Mpox is a viral disease transmitted through close contact with infected persons, animals, or contaminated surfaces. Symptoms include rash, fever, headaches, muscle and back aches, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes.

The GHS advised frequent handwashing, use of hand sanitiser, mask-wearing, covering lesions when around others, and disinfecting shared spaces. For mouth sores, saltwater rinses are recommended.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared Mpox a public health emergency of international concern in August last year due to the spread of a new variant in Africa.

Cases have since been reported in over 13 African countries, with more than 17,000 suspected infections and 517 deaths documented in 2023, according to the Africa CDC.

WHO also approved the first Mpox vaccine last year to enhance access for millions at risk across the continent, where the current outbreak has affected more than 20,000 individuals.

Perceptions about KiDi and I not seeing eye to eye are half-truths – Kuami Eugene

0

Kuami Eugene said he sees KiDi as a big brother Kuami Eugene said he sees KiDi as a big brother

Ghanaian musician Kuami Eugene has said public concerns about KiDi and him not seeing eye to eye may be half-truths.

This comes on the back of comments and speculations about these two artists being close in the open because they were under the same record label, hence the requirement to be nice to each other.

Speaking to Doreen Avio, he related their actions to differences in character and how they respond to specific issues.

“There’s some truth to what you just said, actually, and there’s a side of the story where there were the early days with Lynx Entertainment and the entire family; it was that sweet because you were all coming up together.

“It’s just like, people have different perceptions about people and how people handle themselves. KiDi’s character is way different from my character; we were two different people”, he said.

The musician further stated he’s got to keep a solid composure to help safeguard his dignity among his peers and the general public.

“I tried as much as possible to be in between, but I don’t want to be so calm that I lose respect for it. I don’t want to be too soft because you know how people are; when you’re too soft, they take their respect away and they bully you. Lynx taught me so much, and I’ve actually loved the brotherhood with KiDi in particular. We’ve had days where the tension is up there so much that sometimes, about maybe like a whole year, we don’t see each other, but we were all at Lynx Entertainment.”

“I moved from Lynx; I moved from the camp; I rented somewhere else, and later he moved as well. I had a studio in my house, and he also had a studio in his house as well. It got to a time when, if we met, maybe at a show somewhere in the States or maybe once we were going to the States together, we were going abroad together. The always together lasted for like about two, three years”, he added.

He further highlighted and spelt out his respect and concern for his colleague musician, KiDi, who he sees as his big brother.

“I actually love and respect KiDi as a big brother. Every single good thought he’s had about me, I appreciate it as a brother. I mean, I wish him expansion all the time. Anytime I see his post on social media, it’s part of my prayer that this song blows up because we all, when we blow up, bring glory to Lynx Entertainment, and that’s what I pray for all of us.

“There’s very little you can change about the narrative of other people, but I respect and love Kidi so much as a big brother”, he said.

President Mahama to inaugurate GoldBod Taskforce on July 8 to curb illegal gold trading

0

President John Dramani Mahama is set to inaugurate the GoldBod Taskforce on July 8, 2025, to tackle gold smuggling, illegal gold trading, and price disruptions that deprive the state of critical foreign exchange earnings.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, the taskforce will function as a dedicated intelligence unit with enforcement powers equivalent to those of the police, specifically focusing on gold smuggling and related activities.

He emphasised that the taskforce will operate independently of existing security forces to ensure the continuity and effectiveness of its mandate.

Speaking at a press briefing on June 30, 2025, Gyamfi issued a stern warning to individuals engaged in the illegal gold trade: “We know where you are, and we are coming for you.”

He further disclosed that intelligence gathered by his team suggests that some foreigners are hiding in the country to engage in illegal gold transactions.

“If we catch any foreigner, they won’t be deported. They will be prosecuted right here in Ghana,” he stated.

This development comes on the heels of the commencement of the new gold licensing regime under the Ghana Gold Board, which requires all gold traders to obtain a valid GoldBod license.

Ghanaians interested in participating in the gold trade are advised to apply for a license via the GoldBod portal on the Ghana.gov platform.

Kamaldeen Sulemana undergoes Atalanta medical ahead of Serie A move

Kamaldeen Sulemana during his Atalanta medicals Kamaldeen Sulemana during his Atalanta medicals

Kamaldeen Sulemana is edging closer to a fresh chapter in Italy as he undergoes his medical tests with Atalanta in Bergamo today.

The 22-year-old is on the verge of sealing a move from Southampton to the Serie A side after the two clubs reached a full agreement this week.

According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Atalanta will pay €17.5 million in instalments for Sulemana’s services, with an additional €4 million in add-ons and team performance bonuses.

Southampton have also secured a 15% sell-on clause, ensuring they benefit from any future transfer.

Sulemana is expected to complete his tests on Monday, June 30, 2025, before putting pen to paper on a deal that will keep him at Atalanta until June 2029, with an option that could extend his stay by another year.

The Ghana international joined Southampton from Rennes in January 2023, but despite flashes of his explosive pace and direct style, he struggled to settle fully in the Premier League, scoring four goals and registering seven assists in 74 appearances for the Saints.

With Atalanta, Sulemana will be hoping for a fresh start in a system that could suit his attacking instincts and flair on the flanks.

The move comes at a time when Atalanta continue to invest smartly as they build for another European push under new head coach Ivan Juric.

For Sulemana, who remains an important piece for the Black Stars, this is a chance to revive his spark in one of Europe’s most tactical leagues.

Kenyan vendor shot by police during protests dies after life support switched off

Boniface Kariuki's family has called for a speedy investigation into his death Boniface Kariuki’s family has called for a speedy investigation into his death

A street vendor shot in the head by police during protests two weeks ago has died, a day after being declared brain-dead in hospital, his family says.

“Boniface is no more. We have just viewed his body,” family spokeswoman Emily Wanjira told the BBC.

Boniface Kariuki was shot as police cracked down on a protest in the capital, Nairobi, against the death in detention of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang, 31.

Kariuki, a mask vendor, was shot at close range on 17 June and later admitted to Nairobi’s main public referral hospital for treatment.

He spent nearly two weeks on life support before doctors informed his family that although his heart was still beating, his brain had ceased to function.

Doctors carried out several operations, but some bullet fragments reportedly remained lodged in his brain.

News of his brain death sparked further public anger over alleged police brutality, with mounting demands for justice.

Many Kenyans have also urged the government to settle the hospital bills, after Mr Kariuki’s family appealed for public donations.

Two police officers have appeared in court in connection with the shooting, though they have not yet entered pleas. They remain in custody pending investigations.

On Sunday, Mr Kariuki’s family urged authorities to expedite investigations and ensure justice is served.

Kenya has witnessed a wave of protests in recent weeks, driven by widespread accusations of police brutality.

At least 19 people were killed last Wednesday, according to rights groups. Authorities, however, blame protesters, alleging they attacked police stations and officers.

On Monday, Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin stated that 485 people had been arrested for a range of alleged crimes, including murder, terrorism, rape, looting, destruction of property, and attacks on police officers.

“No one will hide behind peaceful protest to commit criminal acts,” Amin said. “We are analysing CCTV footage, mobile phone data, and digital communications to track those involved in the violence. More arrests will follow.”

He added that intelligence reports and arrest records revealed that some individuals had received specific instructions to attack public institutions and security installations.

The DCI chief also reported that at least 11 police officers sustained serious, and in some cases life-threatening, injuries during the protests.

Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen last week described the protests as “terrorism disguised as dissent” and controversially urged police to “shoot on sight” civilians who attacked police stations—drawing sharp criticism from lawyers and rights groups.

In a related development, a Kenyan High Court has ordered Police Inspector General Douglas Kanja to produce missing blogger Ndiangui Kinyagia within 24 hours or appear in court to explain his whereabouts. Kinyagia was reportedly detained by security officers last week and has not been seen since.

Hanna Bissiw exposes attempt to influence release of arrested illegal miners

0

The Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund (MDF), Dr. Hannah Louisa Bissiw-Kotei, has revealed that someone recently contacted her to plead on behalf of some illegal miners who had been arrested.

Dr. Bissiw-Kotei made the disclosure in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, following a series of arrests and community engagements in the Ashanti Region.

However, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Women’s Organiser declined to mention any names.

“The person gave me a long history about how far back we go and wanted to see if the arrested individuals could be released. But I made it clear that it would not be possible. They have caused destruction and must face the consequences,” she stated.

Reaffirming her commitment to the fight against illegal mining, despite threats to her life, she vowed to uphold the integrity of the Minerals Development Fund, insisting it would not be tarnished by any bribery scandal.

“He tried everything possible, but it didn’t work, so he finally mustered the courage to call me. He said they are willing to accept any conditions we give. But they must face the full rigours of the law, because bribery will not work at the Minerals Development Fund,” she stressed.

The outspoken politician emphasized that she is personally committed to championing the cause of mining communities and will stop at nothing to defend their interests.

NPP flagbearer race: Mike Oquaye urges rich ideas, not divisive rhetoric

0

Former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye, has criticised what he describes as divisive campaigning by some New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopefuls, calling instead for a clean, issue-based contest rooted in rich ideas for both the party and Ghana.

Speaking at the launch of the party’s new ideological centre, the Patriotic Institute, in Accra, the NPP stalwart advocated for a progressive and unifying campaign. He urged aspirants who resort to tearing the party apart with their utterances to be guided by history and focus on substance over personal attacks.

“I saw with my own eyes the spirit of respect and cooperation among them—Dankwa, Busia and Dombo,” Prof. Oquaye said, recalling how past leaders of the NPP tradition upheld mutual respect and prioritised party unity.

“We must all learn from this. When President Kufuor was about to leave office with dignity and honour, and we had our conference in 2007, we followed that example. Everyone focused on one thing: ‘What will I do if fortune smiles on me and I’m elected? And what have I done before?’”

He continued, “I am praying that all potential aspirants emulate our founding patriots. Let every candidate tell Ghanaians what they themselves have achieved in life, what they have done for the party, and what they intend to do for Ghana if elected as the NPP’s presidential candidate.”

Prof. Oquaye concluded by calling on the party to reject individuals whose words and actions sow seeds of division, stressing the need for unity as the party prepares for its next internal contest.

TUC Condemns Electricity Tariff Hike

0

Joshua Ansah

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has expressed surprise in the recent 2.45 % electricity tariff hike announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).

In a statement signed by the Secretary General, Joshua Ansah recalled that at a meeting of the General Council, the second highest decision-making body of the TUC Council thoroughly discussed the newly announced tariff and “condemned the PURC for this unwarranted upward adjustment, but more worrying finds the process adopted unethical, unilateral and a betrayal of trust on behalf of the utility consumer.”

The TUC reminded the PURC of its divine mandate to uphold fairness, integrity and transparency in its line of work.

In the statement the PURC put out on Friday, April 11, 2025 in which the Commission communicated a tariff increase of 14.75% for electricity and 4% for water for the first and second quarters of 2025, the Commission indicated the review variables for the quarterly adjustment of utility tariffs, stated the TUC.

The hike incorporates changes in four (4) key variables namely, the cedi/dollar exchange rate, inflation, electricity generation mix and cost of fuel (mainly natural gas) in the electricity tariffs. All previous quarterly adjustments of electricity tariffs have considered these four variables, which is consistent with the rate setting guidelines of the PURC.

For the third quarter tariff review, the PURC now unilaterally springs a surprise with the introduction of two (2) additional variables into the adjustment process. In addition to the four (4) variables that the Commission has used for all of its quarterly adjustments, including the last one it did in April 2025, the Commission now introduces a so-called ‘reserve capacity charge’ and ‘cost of liquid fuel’, observed the TUC, adding that “this is a clear case of deliberate manipulation of the quarterly adjustment mechanism intended to deny workers and Ghanaians the benefit accrued from the current low foreign exchange and inflation rates.”

Our calculation of this third quarter adjustment, the TUC added, “indicates that the cedi appreciation against the US dollar alone should result in significant reduction in both electricity and water tariffs.”

Government, it noted, “has used the appreciation of the cedi to compel our affiliate the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) to reduce transport fares, yet when it got the opportunity, it has failed to demonstrate same measure of fairness in its tariff decisions.”

St. Thomas Eye Hospital unveils cutting-edge laser technology to transform glaucoma treatment

0

In a major stride toward combating glaucoma — the leading cause of irreversible blindness in Ghana — St. Thomas Eye Hospital has officially launched the revolutionary Twin STAR SLT/YAG laser combo machine.

The groundbreaking technology is set to redefine glaucoma care across the country, offering renewed hope to thousands of Ghanaians at risk of losing their sight.

At the heart of the launch was Dr. Dziffa-Bella Imelda Ofori-Adjei, President of the Ophthalmology Society of Ghana, who described the event as a “landmark investment in the future of glaucoma care.”

Speaking at the hospital’s Accra facility, Dr. Ofori-Adjei stressed that the new device is more than just a machine — it is a “bold statement of commitment, vision, and responsibility.”

“Glaucoma remains a silent thief of sight,” she noted. “Up to 8% of Ghanaians aged 40 and above may have the condition — most without knowing, until it’s too late. The urgency of early detection and treatment cannot be overstated.”

The Twin STAR combo machine integrates two critical laser treatments — Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) and YAG laser — into a single device. SLT, now globally recognized as a first-line, non-invasive treatment for glaucoma, lowers intraocular pressure without the need for daily eye drops. The YAG laser component enhances surgical precision for conditions such as angle-closure glaucoma and posterior capsular opacification — a common complication following cataract surgery.

Dr. Ofori-Adjei outlined the far-reaching benefits of the machine, noting: “It significantly improves our ability to diagnose and manage glaucoma at earlier stages and with greater precision. But just as important as the technology is the human investment — the training of staff, the commitment to patient care, and the leadership that drives such innovation.”

Also present was Dr. Michael Ekuoba Gyasi, Executive Director and founder of St. Thomas Eye Hospital, who expressed pride in the hospital’s pioneering role in advancing eye care.

“This is not just a win for Accra, but for the whole country,” Dr. Gyasi said. “With this technology, we’re ready to deliver high-quality services to all our clients and continue our mission to make world-class eye care accessible to every Ghanaian.”

The launch event served as both a celebration and a call to action. Dr. Ofori-Adjei urged both public and private health institutions to step up in the national fight against glaucoma.

“The fight against avoidable blindness requires a united front — clinicians, policymakers, media, civil society, and communities,” she said. “Let this launch be a beacon that inspires others.”

As Ghana faces a rise in age-related eye conditions, the integration of advanced technologies like the Twin STAR SLT/YAG laser offers a powerful tool in halting the progression of blindness and restoring hope to many.

The One Ghana Movement has presented a plaque to Citi FM and Channel One TV in recognition of their unwavering support and contribution to the Movement’s civic and public interest initiatives.

The organisation lauded the two media outlets for their strong civic voice and instrumental role in promoting public interest journalism in Ghana.

Presenting the plaque to the management of Citi FM and Channel One TV, the Convenor of the One Ghana Movement, Senyo Hosi, praised the stations for their impactful partnership and commitment to national development.

“We are here to express appreciation for the support we have had from you and not just us, the entire nation. Citi FM and Channel One TV have proven to be the voice of the voiceless. You have been a great conscience of this nation, and you are a hope for the future of this country, and we want to commend you,” he said.

He also announced the Movement’s upcoming Republic Day Lecture, slated for Thursday, June 30, which will feature former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and renowned Ghanaian diplomat Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas.

“The Republic Day lecture this year is going to be an epic and exciting one. We are supposed to be the Black Star of Africa, and our Founding President was very clear when he said that our independence will be meaningless unless it is linked to the entire liberation of Africa,” he added.

Head of News at Citi FM and Channel One TV, Vivian Kai Lokko, expressed gratitude to the One Ghana Movement for the honour and reaffirmed the stations’ commitment to supporting the Movement’s future initiatives.

“We are happy and also honoured to be part of what you do over the years. We have been part of the lectures that you have been doing, and we are also excited and looking forward to the one that is coming on Thursday,” she stated.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has, in a strongly worded letter, distanced itself from remarks made by its Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, against Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams.

In a statement dated Monday, June 30, 2025, and shared by the Mpraeso lawmaker Davis Ansah Opoku, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Justin Frimpong Kodua, condemned remarks made by Kwame Baffoe also known as Abronye.

He stated that the comments were inconsistent with the party’s core values and principles.

Kodua indicated that the NPP, as a major political party, holds men of God and religious leaders in high esteem, specifically acknowledging the contributions Archbishop Duncan-Williams has made to national development.

“The attention of the National Secretariat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been drawn to public commentary made by the Bono Regional Chairman of the Party, Mr. Kwame Baffoe, alias Abronye DC, in which he made some unfortunate and unprovoked remarks about the internationally revered Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams during a recent media engagement.

“The party unequivocally distance itself from those comments, and emphasise that they do not reflect the party’s values, beliefs, or official position. The New Patriotic Party holds religious leadership in high regard and recognises the immense contributions of Archbishop Duncan- Williams and the broader religious community to national development, peace, and moral guidance,” portions of the statement read.

Kodua acknowledged the party’s commitment to allowing its members to freely exercise their right to free speech, however, he emphasised that individuals must do so responsibly and with respect for such influential policymakers.

“While the NPP, as a democratic and inclusive political tradition, upholds the freedom of expression of its members, we also expect such freedom to be exercised with utmost responsibility, respect, and decorum, especially when addressing revered leaders of faith whose influence transcends partisan boundaries,” the statement continued.

It therefore called on the religious community to regard Abronye’s remarks as his personal views, which do not represent the position of the party in any way.

“We urge the general public, especially the Christian community, to treat Mr Baffoe’s personal views as entirely his own and not attributable to the New Patriotic Party.”

It concluded, “The party remains committed to fostering respectful engagement across all sectors of Ghanaian society and will continue to work in partnership with religious institutions for the collective advancement of our country.”

The party’s disclaimer follows verbal attacks made by Abronye against the religious leader during a recent media appearance.

Kojo Bonsu’s ambassadorial appointment will boost Ghana-China trade, say Kumasi traders

Market Queen Mothers and traders in Kumasi have welcomed the appointment of Kojo Bonsu as Ghana’s Ambassador-designate to China, describing it as a move that will improve trade relations between Ghana and China.

Kojo Bonsu, who served as Mayor of Kumasi from 2013 to 2016, is praised for his deep understanding of the challenges and needs of Ghanaian traders. Many believe this background will guide him to make trade decisions that benefit both countries especially traders in Ghana.

During a visit to the markets in Kumasi, the traders and Queen Mothers pointed to his work on the redevelopment of the Kejetia Market and other trade-friendly initiatives during his tenure as mayor.

“He understands us, and he has always worked with us. We know he will make things better for traders in China and Ghana,” said Nana Yaa Sika, Queenmother of Bantama Market.

Other market traders, including Anastasia Dogyin and Nana Akua Ago, shared similar sentiments. They expressed hope that Bonsu’s appointment will open more business opportunities and make importing goods from China easier and more transparent.

Recent trade figures support the growing importance of Ghana-China trade relations. According to the Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC), in May 2025, China exported goods worth $1.12 billion to Ghana and imported just $70.7 million, creating a trade surplus of $1.05 billion in China’s favour.

China’s exports to Ghana increased by 32.3% over the past year, while Ghana’s exports to China dropped by 50.9%. China’s main exports to Ghana include Coated Flat-Rolled Iron ($41.8M), Rubber Footwear ($34.3M), and Large Construction Vehicles ($29.9M). Ghana’s major exports to China are Manganese Ore ($61.7M), Scrap Copper ($2.65M), and Cocoa Paste ($2.4M).

Despite this imbalance, Ghanaian traders remain hopeful that with Kojo Bonsu’s leadership, new strategies will be developed to make the relationship more equitable.

“Mr. Bonsu knows how to talk for traders. He will help solve the bottlenecks and make business smooth for all of us,” said a trader at the Race Course Market.

As Ghana looks to strengthen its trade presence in Asia, many traders believe the appointment is a timely and strategic move to deepen economic ties and protect the interests of small and medium-scale businesses.
