Speaking during a campaign tour in her constituency on Sunday, December 14, 2025, Adwoa Safo urged delegates to reject Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr. Bawumia’s main contender, citing his alleged disrespect towards women.

Tema West Cleans Adjei Kojo on Sanitation Day

By Emmanuella Owusu, GNA

Adjei-Kojo (Tema West), Dec. 15, GNA – Officials of the Tema West Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with community leaders and residents, have organised a clean-up exercise at Adjei Kojo to improve sanitation and environmental hygiene in the area.

The exercise was led by the Tema West Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Ludwig Teye Totimeh; the Member of Parliament for Tema West, Mr James Enu; and the Assembly Member for Adjei Kojo, Ms Charity Dela Siameh.

Residents, community leaders and officials cleaned streets, markets and public spaces, collecting refuse and debris as part of efforts to promote a clean and healthy environment within the municipality.

Mr Totimeh told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the exercise formed part of broader efforts to improve sanitation and hygiene practices in the Tema West Municipality.

He urged residents to actively participate in the National Sanitation Day, which is held monthly, to ensure that their surroundings remained clean, stressing that sanitation exercises were not meant for officials alone but required the involvement of all residents.

He reminded residents of the Assembly’s sanitation bye-laws, adding that persons who refused to participate could be sanctioned.

Mr Enu, on his part, encouraged residents to take sanitation exercises seriously, noting that collective responsibility was key to maintaining a healthy community.

He said aside from sanitation issues, the Assembly was addressing other development challenges in the municipality, including the Tema Community Two market reconstruction project, the Adjei Kojo road network and the Adjei Kojo bridge.

The MP said all requirements for the Community Two market reconstruction project had been fulfilled and submitted to President John Dramani Mahama, adding that the project was awaiting structural clearance as part of the government’s vision to construct a modern market in every constituency.

Mr Enu further disclosed plans to roll out an employment initiative dubbed “My Job Centre,” which would enable young people to apply for jobs online.

Mr Isaac Danso, a resident, who participated in the exercise, pledged his support for efforts to maintain cleanliness in the community and appealed for the provision of refuse bins at various junctions to improve waste management.

Ms Siameh said she had engaged the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly and market queens from both Ashaiman and Adjei Kojo on addressing sanitation challenges at the under-bridge market, adding that she was yet to receive feedback.

She expressed hope that continued engagement would help promote cleanliness within the community.

Some residents acknowledged that poor sanitation and hygiene practices contributed significantly to the spread of diseases and called for sustained collaboration to keep the environment clean.

Kennedy Agyapong accuses Bawumia of instigating Abronye’s rants against him

0

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has accused former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of orchestrating controversial statements made by Bono Regional Chairman of the party, Kwame Baffoe, widely known as Abronye DC.

“He [Dr Mahamamudu Bawumia] is the one behind Abronye’s rants, and I just do not want to say anything,” Mr Agyapong declared.

Mr Agyapong also accused his rivals of seeking to manipulate party structures to their advantage.

“I do not have time for them, but that does not mean they have to rig the election. I believe in the structures, and I know all the Electoral Commission officials my opponents have engaged with. They plan to use the party’s internal security to humiliate anyone who comes close,” he said.

Mr Agyapong said, “I do not have time for Dr Bawumia. In my life, he does not exist, because if he existed, I might commit a crime. That is how I see myself,” he remarked, signalling the personal and political distance he maintains from Dr Bawumia.

Recounting a past incident at the residence of former President Nana Akufo-Addo, Mr Agyapong insisted that the events were misrepresented on social media.

“Some time ago, something happened at the residence of former President Akufo-Addo. I mentioned a certain man’s name; there was nobody there when I left. The next day, it was posted on social media, but I do not have anything against anybody,” he explained.

In an interview with Accra-based United Television, Mr Agyapong also expressed disappointment over what he perceives as a lack of recognition for his campaign efforts during the recent elections.

“Did I not campaign for him during the recent election? After that, did he even call me to appreciate my efforts? His followers were even insulting me. The only loyal person from his camp was NAPO. I took him to my warehouse and gave out items freely. He had young boys who claimed that I never campaigned,” he said.

My Yoruba title symbolic, I don’t take it lightly

0

President John Dramani Mahama has described the honour bestowed on him by the Ooni of Ife as deeply meaningful, highlighting its symbolic value for the historic ties between Ghana and Nigeria.

President Mahama made the remarks after he was installed as Aare Atayeto Oodua of the Source by the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Babatunde Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, at a colourful ceremony held in Ile-Ife in Nigeria’s Osun State on Monday, December 15, 2025.

The prestigious Yoruba chieftaincy title, which translates as “A President who reorganises the global space for humanity,” was conferred in recognition of President Mahama’s leadership qualities and his advocacy for global cooperation, equity and sustainable development.

In his acceptance speech, President Mahama expressed gratitude to the Ooni of Ife, recounting how the traditional ruler maintained a close relationship with him even during his time in opposition.

“After I lost the election in 2020, I became nobody to many people. Through my sister, he kept asking when I was going to come. I was impressed because I was nobody and in opposition at the time, yet his insistence that I come to visit him moved me,” President Mahama said.

He recalled that when he eventually visited Ile-Ife, he was warmly received by the Ooni, who later gave him words of encouragement.

“One day, I picked a date and came, and he received me so warmly. After the visit, he took me to all the secret places of the palace and then told me, ‘Go, and you will get your seat,” he said.

President Mahama noted that the prediction came to pass when he was elected President in 2024, describing the honour as one he holds in high esteem.

“I don’t take this honour lightly. I know that there is a historic bond between the people of Ghana and Nigeria. When Nigeria prospers, Ghana prospers, and when Ghana prospers, Nigeria prospers,” he added.

The installation ceremony drew traditional rulers, dignitaries and guests from across West Africa, underscoring the cultural and diplomatic significance of the honour.

Build bridges with Sahel, Don’t ostracise – Mahama to ECOWAS

0

President John Dramani Mahama has called on West African leaders to pursue dialogue and engagement with Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, following their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Speaking on regional integration, President Mahama said the exit of the three countries, now operating as the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), should not lead to their isolation, stressing that cooperation remains essential to addressing the sub-region’s shared challenges.

“Our sub-region is facing challenges. Three of our members have decided to break away and form the AES,” he said, adding that the development should not deter ECOWAS from maintaining relations with the Sahel states.

President Mahama argued that the destinies of ECOWAS and the AES countries remain intertwined, making continued engagement vital. He urged regional leaders to focus on bridge-building rather than ostracism, noting that sustained dialogue could encourage the Sahel states to return to the ECOWAS fold.

“Instead of ostracising them, we must continue to build bridges between ECOWAS and our brothers in the Sahel,” he said, emphasising that West Africa’s geographic and historical ties impose a responsibility on leaders to work together for collective stability and development.

The President also expressed optimism about strengthening bilateral relations within the sub-region, particularly with Nigeria, saying closer cooperation would benefit the peoples of both countries.

President Mahama made the remarks after his installation as Aare Atayeto Oodua of the Source by the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Babatunde Ogunwusi, Ojaja II. The ceremony took place in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria, on Monday, December 15.

Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso formally exited ECOWAS earlier this year, citing political and security disagreements with the regional bloc, a move that has raised concerns about unity and stability in West Africa.

Troubled Akufo-Addo seeks President Mahama’s audience for Ken Ofori-Atta’s return

0

The Herald, has gathered that former President Nana Akufo-Addo is deeply distressed by the growing controversy surrounding his cousin and former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, over matters arising from his nearly 8-year tenure at the Finance Ministry.

The ex-President is demanding a special passage when the man once regarded as a financial wizard arrives at Kotoka International Airport to confront his many skeletons.

According to sources, the former President wants Ofori-Atta, who has been in the US since February this year, on claims of a medical condition related to his kidney, to immediately return to Ghana to personally address the allegations, particularly those being pursued by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Insiders say Akufo-Addo believes the ongoing allegations are tarnishing the family name and undermining the legacy of his administration and insists that his cousin should return home to face the law and prove his innocence.

Family sources further reveal that the former President has been shocked and even embarrassed by reports alleging procurement breaches, abuse of public office, and violations of procurement and criminal laws, potentially involving substantial sums of public funds and irregular state contracts.

Despite the controversy, the former President is seeking “a safe passage” for Ofori-Atta upon his return to Ghana from the United States, with no state action to publicly humiliate him by arresting and detaining him upon arrival at Kotoka International Airport.

Interestingly, The Herald understands that Ofori-Atta remains in frequent contact with family and close associates and continues to oversee his private business interests, including Enterprise Insurance, Transition Funeral Home, and Databank Financial Services, among others.

Sources close to the matter indicate that former President Akufo-Addo is considering approaching President John Dramani Mahama to seek assurances of the “safe passage” for Ofori-Atta.

However, Jubilee House insiders tell The Herald that although President Mahama has not yet been approached, he firmly believes the law must be allowed to take its full course and is therefore unwilling to enter into any arrangement with the former President regarding his cousin.

The President is opposed to granting the “safe passage” sought.

Additionally, some officials within the Mahama administration also hold the position that Ofori-Atta must first account for, and, where necessary, refund, any state funds allegedly acquired during his tenure before any discussions can be entertained about his return or the possibility of leniency.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor has alleged that Ofori-Atta was involved in an improper agreement between Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and has consequently initiated proceedings against him in absentia.

Last week, five persons, including an entity, who were arraigned over the alleged Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) scandal, were granted bail by an Accra High Court.

The accused, Emmanuel Kofi Nti, 66, former Commissioner-General, Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA); Isaac Crentsil, 63, former Commissioner at GRA; Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, former Commissioner-General of GRA; and Evans Adusei, Chief Executive Officer of SML, were each granted bail in the sum of GH¢50 million with two sureties to be justified.

Justice Francis Aponga Achibonga ordered that they deposit their passports or any international travel documents at the Court Registry. They are also required to report to the lead investigator at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) weekly.

However, the Court suspended enforcement of the new bail terms until December 15, 2025, and directed the accused to remain on their existing OSP bail conditions until that date.

The accused persons face multiple charges, including Conspiracy to commit criminal offences of directly or indirectly influencing the procurement process to obtain an unfair advantage.

Directly influencing procurement processes and causing financial loss to the State. Using public office for profit, Willful oppression, false certificate by a public officer, and entering into an agreement with financial commitments binding the State for more than one financial year without prior parliamentary approval. All accused persons pleaded not guilty.

The case was adjourned to December 17, 2025, when the Court is expected to take the plea of Kwadwo Damoah, Member of Parliament for Jaman South and former Commissioner of the Customs Division of GRA, who was absent when the matter was called.

His lawyer, who was present, was instructed to notify him of the next court date. Three other accused persons, Kenneth Ofori-Atta, 66, former Minister of Finance; Ernest Darko Akoree, 67, Chief de Cabinet to Ofori-Atta; and Mr Damoah, were also absent.

The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, informed the Court that intelligence indicated that Ofori-Atta and Akoree were currently in the United States of America and that the OSP had initiated extradition proceedings against them.

Defence counsel for the accused persons took turns to request bail, arguing that their clients had complied with all previous OSP bail conditions and had no intention of absconding.

The facts presented by the Special Prosecutor were that the accused persons conspired to establish and operate a criminal enterprise from 2017 to influence the procurement process in favour of SML.

This was in the award of contracts for transaction audit services, external price verification, downstream petroleum measurement audit, upstream petroleum audit and mineral audit services.

He said the arrangement was characterised by a lack of genuine need for SML’s services, and that the contracts were secured through “self-serving patronage, sponsorship and promotion” by Ofori-Atta, Akoree, Nti, Owusu-Amoah, Crentsil and Damoah, based on false and unverified claims.

The SP noted that the accused persons disregarded mandatory statutory approvals by Parliament and the Board of the Public Procurement Authority, acting with “emboldened impunity” as they allegedly abused their public offices for private benefit.

He said they also failed to establish effective financial management systems to monitor SML’s work, resulting in significant financial losses to the State.

Payment channels to SML were allegedly set to “automatic mode” and disconnected from actual performance.

According to the SP, the Republic lost about One billion, four hundred and thirty-six million, two hundred and forty-nine thousand, eight hundred and twenty-eight point six three Ghana cedi (GH¢1,436,249,828.63) through the arrangement.

Investigations by the OSP were triggered by petitions received in December 2023 and were conducted between December 20, 2023, and October 3, 2025.

Following preliminary findings, the Government suspended SML’s services in January 2024.

A presidential directive issued on October 31, 2025, subsequently terminated all contracts awarded to SML by the Ministry of Finance and the GRA. The accused persons, the SP added, had also intended to commit the State to a further payment of US$2,799,604,864.71 over five years without the mandatory authorisation of Parliament.

Earlier reports alleged that procurement processes were manipulated to give SML an unfair advantage, including false representations that it had exclusive and legitimate capacity/technology.

The contracts were single-source (no competitive bidding) and lacked statutory approval, raising questions of abuse of public office and breach of procurement laws.

OSP has charged Ofori-Atta with conspiracy to “directly or indirectly influence the procurement process to obtain an unfair advantage in the award of a procurement contract.” This violates provisions of the Criminal Offences Act and the Public Procurement Act.

The case against him includes 78 counts insofar as the SML-GRA scandal is concerned.

Prosecutors say that payments totalling over GH¢1 billion (by some accounts) were authorised to SML without evidence that the company did any work. The claim is that the payment arrangement was automatic and not tied to any measurable deliverables.

The OSP also listed additional controversial cases under investigation, including the termination of a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC) for a power network improvement project.

Procurement and spending are linked to the National Cathedral Project. A large contract was awarded to Service Ghana Auto Group Limited to purchase and maintain 307 ambulances for the National Ambulance Service under the Ministry of Health. The OSP flags this as potentially involving inflated costs, irregular procurement procedures, and improper utilisation/payment from the GRA’s Tax Refund (or “Tax P-Fund”) account.

OSP declared Ofori-Atta “wanted” and a “fugitive from justice” after he failed to return to the jurisdiction to respond to charges.

They argue that a simple “medical letter” submitted on his behalf did not constitute valid grounds to avoid personal attendance.

The OSP later filed formal charges, including “conspiracy to influence procurement process”, and is proceeding under the criminal justice system.

Addressing the media on December 14, 2025, the leadership of the spare parts dealers, led by Takyie Addo, expressed strong dissatisfaction with GUTA’s recent actions, particularly the inauguration of a new GUTA president without extending an invitation to the leadership of the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association.

Former GUTA president lauds government, BoG for safeguarding trader capital

Reacting to the development in an interview with GhanaWeb Business on December 15, 2025, Obeng urged all parties to prioritise dialogue and avoid actions that could escalate tensions within the trading community.

“I want to appeal to all sides to exercise restraint. This issue can be resolved through engagement and understanding, not confrontation,” he said.

According to him, internal disagreements within trader associations should be addressed through the National Council and other established structures, using peaceful negotiations to protect the collective interests of traders nationwide.

Obeng said that prolonged disputes could negatively affect businesses and disrupt commercial activities, particularly at a time when traders are already facing economic pressures.

“When traders fight among themselves, it weakens our bargaining power and affects confidence in the market. We must remember that unity has always been our strength,” he stated.

He further encouraged GUTA leadership and the spare parts dealers to return to the negotiating table and work toward an amicable solution that reflects the concerns of all stakeholders.

“This is not the time for division. It is the time for maturity, dialogue, and compromise for the greater good of the trading community,” Obeng added.

Medikal's BYK Concert was a celebration of music, unity and excellence Medikal’s BYK Concert was a celebration of music, unity and excellence

Accra witnessed an unforgettable night as Ghanaian superstar Medikal delivered a historic BYK Concert that completely shut down the Accra Sports Stadium, turning the iconic venue into a sea of energy, music, and celebration.

The Beyond Kontrol boss proved once again why he remains one of Ghana’s most dominant musical forces, commanding the stage with confidence, charisma, and a catalogue of back-to-back hits.

From the moment the gates opened, thousands of fans poured into the stadium, creating an electric atmosphere that set the tone for the night.

The concert was elevated by an impressive lineup of supporting acts who kept the energy at an all-time high. Music duo Keche got the crowd warmed up with their infectious stage presence, while legendary rapper Obrafour reminded patrons of Ghana’s rich hip-life roots with a powerful, nostalgic performance.

One of the night’s most iconic moments came when hiplife pioneer Reggie Rockstone took center stage to officially introduce Medikal.

The symbolic handover from a legend to one of the new-generation greats was met with thunderous applause, underscoring Medikal’s journey and impact on Ghanaian music.

The star-studded show continued with thrilling performances from Bisa Kdei, Sarkodie, Fameye, Kofi Mole, Reggie Osei, O’Kenneth, Beeztrap KOTM, and Kojo Blak, who pulled up with reality TV star and musician Fantana.

Each act brought their unique sound, contributing to a well-curated experience that kept fans on their feet throughout the night.

Anytime Medikal took over the stage, it was clear the night belonged to him. With hit after hit and an undeniable connection with the crowd, he delivered a performance that cemented the concert as one of the biggest music moments of the year.

On his set, he had performances with the likes of Olivetheboy and Mr Drew, and climaxed the event with the dancehall King Shatta Wale.

From start to finish, the event was a celebration of Ghanaian music, unity, and excellence.

By the end of the night, one thing was undeniable: Medikal didn’t just perform at the Accra Sports Stadium; he shut it down.

Dangote insists ‘oil mafia’ stronger than drug cartels, cites $82m refinery thefts

0

Aliko Dangote is the President of the Dangote Group Aliko Dangote is the President of the Dangote Group

The President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has reiterated his remarks regarding systemic sabotage in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, asserting that the “oil mafia” is far more powerful than drug cartels.

During a press briefing at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lekki, Lagos, on Sunday, Dangote said criminal organisations undermining local refining are far more formidable than drug cartels, detailing the immense financial and physical damage inflicted upon his refinery and the nation’s infrastructure.

“I told you that drug mafia, they’re actually smaller than the people who are in oil and gas. Because most of the people who are in the drugs, you know yourselves, but in the oil sector, there are so many people,” he said.

Dangote further disclosed the substantial financial losses incurred by his refinery due to these activities, noting the security measures required to protect the refinery.

“In this refinery, we have $82 million of stolen items, and what they were actually trying to do is to make sure that we go and put a massive claim on insurance. So when we put a massive claim on insurance, you know, there’s no free lunch.

“So, continuously, our insurance premiums will just keep going up. So, yes, there is sabotage. And I’m sure, you know, we should go and ask all the people who have even built, you know, the modular refineries. And I challenge any one of them to say that nothing was stolen.

“That’s why we have more security people in this refinery than actual workers of the refinery.”

Dangote pointed to specific acts of sabotage, including the removal of a critical spare part from a massive boiler while it was operational.

“We have a boiler. 400 tons is the largest boiler ever built in the world. It was under operation. Somebody went there and removed a spare part out of it.

“If I tell you the sabotages that we went through, including some of the machine manufacturers, we are on the verge of going to court, so I cannot tell you what, but if I tell you, you will now know what I’m saying.”

He also broadened his accusation to cover the destruction of national assets, arguing that the pervasive damage across the country’s petroleum network is evidence of sabotage.

“How come now, for example, all the pipelines that were built, right from the military days to date, none of them, the one that we have, which is from where I am from, Kano, that depot, we are not using trucks. 22 depots were built. They are all piped. All 22 depots, actually, even the sediments, they don’t have it anymore. They have destroyed the pipes, all of them.

“So if it’s not sabotage, is that an earthquake? It’s not an earthquake, because it’s sabotage. Sabotage is sabotage. So that is what it is.

“I don’t know whether Mele Kyari is still in town, but I think you should ask him how many sabotages the Port Harcourt refinery repairs went through. He told me many times that they have had more than 100 sabotages at the refinery. You can ask him. He will tell you.”

PUNCH reports that Dangote also spoke on what he described as regulatory failures and alleged corruption in the downstream petroleum sector, alleging that the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Farouk Ahmed, paid about $5m for the secondary school education of his four children in Switzerland, calling for a full investigation and public explanation.

Dangote’s statements on sabotage are not isolated. In June 2024, he stated that both local and international criminal organisations, which he described as a “mafia,” had made repeated attempts to sabotage his entire refinery project.

According to him, the opposition consisted of international traders and local marketers who preferred to profit from the importation of petroleum products rather than allow local refining to succeed.

In September 2025, he again raised an alarm, alleging deliberate attempts to frustrate the refinery’s operations, warning that “the international traders and the local marketers all connive to suffocate any refinery”.

Mahama installed as Aare Atayeto Oodua by Ooni of Ife

President John Dramani Mahama has been installed as Aare Atayeto Oodua of the Source by the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Babatunde Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, in a ceremony held in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria.

The prestigious Yoruba chieftaincy title, which translates as “A President who reorganises the global space for humanity,” was conferred in recognition of President Mahama’s leadership and advocacy for global cooperation, equity, and sustainable development.

The installation followed days of preparations at the palace of the Ooni of Ife, where cultural rites and ceremonies were performed ahead of the event.

The palace grounds came alive with traditional displays, decorations, and the presence of chiefs, dignitaries, and members of the Yoruba community who gathered to witness the historic occasion.

President Mahama has long been known for his strong support for multilateralism and a fair global order. In recent international engagements, including addresses at the United Nations, he has consistently called for collective action to address global challenges such as climate change and economic inequality, while advocating for a stronger voice for developing nations in global decision-making.

This latest honour adds to President Mahama’s existing traditional titles within the Yoruba world. In October 2015, he was conferred with the title Aare Atolase of Offa by the Offa Kingdom in Kwara State, in recognition of his contributions to leadership and diplomacy.

The installation is expected to further strengthen cultural and diplomatic ties between Ghana and Nigeria, reflecting the deep historical and cultural bonds shared between the two countries.

The Ooni of Ife, regarded as one of the most revered traditional rulers among the Yoruba people, continues to play a key role in promoting Yoruba heritage, interfaith harmony, and socio-economic development across Nigeria and the wider African diaspora.

Ghana’s public debt balloons by over GH¢70bn in just three months

0

Ghana’s public debt stock has surged again, rising by more than GH¢70 billion in just three months, reflecting pressures from the cedi’s sharp depreciation against the US dollar in the third quarter of 2025.

Latest Bank of Ghana data tracked by JoyNews Research shows that Ghana’s public debt increased by about GH¢71.6 billion in the third quarter, with projections indicating that total public debt could exceed GH¢700 billion by the end of the year if the cedi remains under sustained pressure against the dollar.

Total public debt, which declined by GH¢156.4 billion between the first and second quarters, has now risen to GH¢684.6 billion, heavily driven by the cedi’s renewed struggle against the US dollar in Q3.

The local currency lost about 24% of its value in the third quarter against the US greenback, after having appreciated by more than 40% in Q2.

Earlier this year, the Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, revealed in the 2025 Mid-Year Budget that “prudent debt management and exchange rate appreciation have resulted in a significant improvement in Ghana’s debt profile.”

He noted that public debt declined from GH¢726.7 billion at the end of December 2024 to GH¢613 billion by the end of June 2025.

However, historical data show that exchange rate depreciation remains a key driver of Ghana’s rising debt levels. In 2023 alone, currency depreciation accounted for 62.5% of the increase in the total public debt stock, reinforcing concerns about the country’s exposure to foreign currency risks.

Also the slowdown in foreign exchange interventions by the Bank of Ghana, combined with rising import pressures, has contributed to the recent depreciation of the cedi.

Over the years, dollar injections by the central bank have helped cushion the cedi against excessive depreciation, a development that has in turn supported a more favourable public debt profile.

This year alone, the Bank of Ghana is reported to have supplied about US$10 billion to the foreign exchange market, operating under what it describes as a foreign exchange intermediation framework rather than direct market intervention.

The projection is that additional depreciation of the local currency could worsen the debt profile should the current pressures persist.

‘Was Bawumia the finance minister?’ – Adwoa Safo dismisses blame for NPP’s defeat

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia with Sarah Adwoa Safo in an old photo Dr Mahamudu Bawumia with Sarah Adwoa Safo in an old photo

A former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has rubbished talks that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia single-handedly contributed to the ill-fortune of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 Election.

Admitting that things did not go well for the party in terms of its management of the country, under the reign of embattled former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, Adwoa Safo questioned why people drag Dr Bawumia into such talks when he was not the one in charge of finance.

According to the former MP, the woes of Ken Ofori-Atta are his alone because when she and other MPs from the NPP wanted him taken off the job, their request was shot down, leading to what become their misfortune and the eventual non-confidence slapped on them by the electorates.

“Was Dr Mahamudu Bawumia the finance minister? Were we not in this country and some of our MPs said our financial situation wasn’t good and so we should sack our finance minister, was is it done?

Trial of Ken Ofori-Atta and seven others opens in Accra

“Was he not left to mess things up before he was let go? How can we now lay that blame on Dr Mahamudu Bawumia?” she quizzed.

Explaining further, the former MP used an analogy of a driver’s conductor and a driver to drive home her point.

She described the situation as the conductor (locally called a ‘mate’) disregarding his master and going ahead to do as he wishes.

“You are a ‘mate’ and while your master is driving, are you able to push him aside and go and take over the steering wheel?

“We do not like speaking the truth and that is why we will mess things up and then refuse to listen when people speak to us. You take monies meant for pensioners and a lot of other things are the reasons we lost the election in 2024,” she emphasised.

It is unclear where Sarah Adwoa Safo was speaking but as has been seen in the video hared by Edhub on X, she appeared to have been addressing some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Cedi to weaken by 8% in 2026 despite strong reserves

Gold prices, reserves to cushion cedi as Fitch projects 2026 depreciation Gold prices, reserves to cushion cedi as Fitch projects 2026 depreciation

A UK-based research firm, Fitch Solutions, says the Ghana cedi is likely to lose some value against the US dollar in 2026, weakening by about 8 percent. In simple terms, this means the cedi may buy fewer dollars next year, which could affect the prices of imported goods.

However, Fitch notes that this expected decline is not as severe as in past years, suggesting that Ghana’s economy is in a more stable position than before. Strong gold exports and healthy foreign reserves are expected to help prevent sharp drops in the value of the cedi.

The firm also expects inflation to rise slightly in the second half of 2026, meaning the cost of living could go up. Still, it says the increase should be milder compared to recent years, offering some relief to households.

For workers, there is some positive news. Government plans to increase base salaries by 9 percent in 2026 should give many public sector workers more money to spend. This is expected to boost household consumption and support economic activity.

Cedi selling at GH¢11.49 ahead of Christmas season

Fitch believes that overall consumer spending will remain strong next year, helping to drive economic growth and sustain jobs and businesses.

The report also highlights that the cedi performed strongly for most of 2025, gaining over 32 percent against the US dollar earlier in the year. The recent slight weakening of the currency, according to Fitch, is mainly due to seasonal demand for foreign exchange and cautious interventions by the Bank of Ghana.

In summary while prices of some imported goods may rise in 2026 due to a weaker cedi, stronger salaries, steady spending, and better economic buffers could help cushion the impact on ordinary Ghanaians.

Chaos, arrests and a giant statue

Messi's visit to India was marred with violence by disgruntled fans Messi’s visit to India was marred with violence by disgruntled fans

Football icon Lionel Messi’s visit to India has dominated the news, marked by a mix of excitement and chaotic scenes that nearly marred the tour. He was accompanied by teammates Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul.

There was controversy among fans at the stadium after they were left disappointed when they were unable to see Messi up close, despite earlier assurances from the event organisers.

Later, the Barcelona legend went on to unveil a statue built in his honour, along with other activities that generated headlines.

Fans vandalise stadium as Messi’s visit to India turns chaotic

Stadium Chaos

Messi’s visit to India turned chaotic on December 13, 2025, as some frustrated fans resorted to violence after failing to meet the superstar.

According to ANI news agency, fans had paid substantial sums of money with the promise of meeting the Barcelona icon, but that did not materialise.

Upon his arrival at the stadium, Messi walked around the pitch waving to fans but was closely surrounded by celebrities, government officials, and other dignitaries.

As a result, most fans were unable to catch even a glimpse of the Inter Miami player, and no special arrangements were made for meet‑and‑greet sessions as organisers had promised.

After the event, furious fans were seen ripping up stadium seats and throwing them onto the field and athletics track. Several people climbed over the perimeter fence and hurled objects onto the pitch.

Event Organiser’s Arrest

Bidhannagar Police Commissioner Mukesh Kumar, who accompanied the Governor and members of the inquiry committee set up by the state government to investigate the fiasco surrounding Messi’s GOAT India tour, blamed the chaos on “clear mismanagement,” as quoted by The Indian Express.

“When you cut a 1 hour 40‑minute event to 20 minutes, this is bound to happen. It is a fallout of mismanagement. We have arrested one person and prepared a list of people to be summoned,” he said after Satadru Dutta, the chief organiser of Messi’s India tour, was arrested.

Dutta’s bail plea was rejected by a Bidhannagar court, and he was remanded into 14‑day judicial custody. The police chief added that CCTV footage is being reviewed and more arrests will be made.

Statue Unveiling

Lionel Messi has been immortalised in Kolkata with the unveiling of a towering 70-foot iron statue showing him lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy. The monument was completed in just 40 days by the Sree Bhumi Sporting Club at Lake Town.

Due to the violent scenes at the stadium, the Inter Miami forward was forced to conduct the unveiling virtually from the Salt Lake Stadium for security reasons.

Alongside Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan and West Bengal minister Sujit Bose, Messi watched as the covers were removed from the statue, expressing delight at the tribute.

Showcasing Football Skills

On Sunday, December 14, 2025, Messi met with Indian footballers and cricketers and spent time engaging with them.

He later performed a few football drills, showcasing his skills briefly before departing the venue.

The legend is scheduled to meet India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, December 15, 2025.

Abossey Okai Spare Parts dealers cut ties with GUTA

0

The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has distanced itself from the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) due to what it describes as consistent exclusion from key decision-making processes.

Takyie Addo, head of Communication for the association, voiced strong grievances during a media address on Sunday, December 14, highlighting a series of concerns that have emerged recently.

In particular, Mr Addo expressed dissatisfaction with GUTA’s decision to inaugurate a new president without inviting or consulting with Abossey Okai, one of Ghana’s largest and most influential business bodies.

He pointed out that such decisions are being made without the involvement or awareness of the Abossey Okai association, which he believes undermines the interests of its members.

“This is not just a matter of a missed invitation,” Mr Addo explained. “It is a sign of ongoing neglect by GUTA, a failure to recognise our association’s significant role in the broader business community.”

He added that GUTA’s decision-making process has been running without the inclusion of the Abossey Okai leadership, which raises serious concerns about the lack of consultation with one of its key stakeholders.

As a result of these unresolved grievances, Mr Addo declared that the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association would no longer participate in any GUTA activities or decisions.

He emphasised that the association will not collaborate further until GUTA executives acknowledge their role and include them in future decisions that directly affect their operations.

“This decision will certainly have an impact on GUTA’s ability to form effective and representative policies,” Mr Addo warned. He stressed that until the leadership of GUTA respects the role of the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association, the ties between the two organisations would remain severed.

Celebrate Ghanaian Culture This Holiday Season with ‘December in Ghana’ Festival

0

Published on
December 15, 2025

Ghana

Ghana is preparing for another exciting holiday season with its flagship “December in Ghana” festival, offering a series of events designed to showcase the country’s vibrant culture, entertainment, and heritage. The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has announced a renewed commitment to elevate service quality, improve coordination with stakeholders, and enhance transparency, ensuring that the nation remains a top destination for both international and domestic visitors. This year’s event is expected to attract a diverse mix of tourists, with a focus on sustainable growth and tourism infrastructure improvements.

The festival, which started in 2019, has quickly become one of Africa’s premier tourism events. It draws travelers from around the world, including the Ghanaian diaspora, and provides a platform for both local and international tourism professionals to collaborate. This year, the GTA’s efforts to elevate the event focus on providing an immersive and professionally organized experience for attendees, ensuring that Ghana continues to grow as a dynamic cultural and entertainment hub on the global stage.

New Additions to the ‘December in Ghana’ Program

The GTA’s 2025 festival will introduce several new elements designed to appeal to a wide range of travelers. The festival’s lineup has expanded from headline concerts and entertainment to include a broader array of activities such as community service projects, investment forums, cultural showcases, and repatriation initiatives. These additions are designed not only to enhance the visitor experience but also to create opportunities for economic and social engagement across Ghana’s tourism industry.

According to Annabelle McKenzie, the GTA’s Director of International Affairs, these initiatives are helping to diversify the festival and expand its appeal to both tourists and local communities. By incorporating business forums and community development projects, the event is becoming a more comprehensive platform for growth, fostering a stronger connection between tourism, investment, and local development.

Focus on Service Excellence Across the Hospitality Sector

One of the GTA’s core strategies for December in Ghana 2025 is to enhance the quality of service across the country’s hospitality sector. The GTA has planned a customer service roundtable specifically for hotel owners and managers, where best practices will be shared, and the importance of guest satisfaction will be discussed. As Maame Efua Houadjeto, CEO of the GTA, highlighted during a recent media engagement, ensuring the highest service standards is key to keeping tourists happy and encouraging repeat visits.

The GTA will also be rolling out visible reminder banners for hotels, and working directly with operators to emphasize the importance of respectful and warm customer service. These efforts are aimed at maintaining Ghana’s renowned hospitality, which is a major draw for international visitors. By ensuring that both large and small businesses adhere to these high standards, the GTA aims to provide a seamless, top-tier experience for all festival-goers.

Event Endorsement and Rigorous Quality Control

To guarantee that all events meet the highest standards, the GTA has implemented a thorough event endorsement process. Organizers must undergo a nine-step procedure, which includes demonstrating alignment with the Black Star Experience and providing detailed security plans. The proposals are then reviewed by a seven-member committee, which can approve, reject, or request additional clarifications.

Once events are approved, they are added to the official December in Ghana calendar, which is marketed both nationally and internationally to maximize attendance and exposure. This structured and transparent process ensures that every activity in the festival meets rigorous standards for safety, quality, and cultural representation.

Boosting Local Economy and Tourism Infrastructure

The increase in international arrivals driven by the “December in Ghana” festival is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy. As more visitors travel to Ghana, demand for local hotels, restaurants, retailers, and tour operators will grow. This, in turn, will stimulate job creation and encourage investments in Ghana’s hospitality sector.

The GTA is also focusing on strengthening transportation infrastructure in Ghana, improving road networks and upgrading airports to ensure easy movement of travelers during the festival. These developments will not only support the tourism industry but also improve the overall experience for visitors.

Ghana’s Growing Reputation as a Tourism Hub

The success of the “December in Ghana” festival reflects the country’s growing reputation as a tourism hub in West Africa. Ghana is home to nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites and offers a rich tapestry of cultural experiences, from its traditional music and dance to its historical landmarks. The country also attracts eco-tourists, with opportunities for safaris, wildlife encounters, and exploring its vibrant forests and coastline.

By offering a unique blend of cultural tourism, heritage tourism, and leisure tourism, Ghana is positioning itself as a destination for global travelers seeking authentic experiences. The festival’s continued success, paired with improved infrastructure and service quality, will play a key role in the country’s long-term tourism strategy.

Conclusion

With its renewed focus on quality service delivery, stakeholder coordination, and transparency, Ghana is ensuring that its signature holiday celebration, “December in Ghana”, continues to grow as a major tourism event. As the country enhances its tourism infrastructure, the festival has become a key platform for promoting the country’s rich cultural heritage and vibrant hospitality to global audiences. Whether tourists are drawn by the music, cultural experiences, or the chance to explore new investment opportunities, Ghana is poised to solidify its place as one of Africa’s top travel destinations.

During the service held in Kumasi, the family head, Kofi Owusu, expressed gratitude to sympathisers and family members for their unwavering support throughout the burial process.

In a video that surfaced online on December 14, 2025, Abusuapanyin Kofi Owusu disclosed during the service that he has officially accepted the name “Tupac,” a nickname given to him by netizens.

According to Kofi Owusu, although he initially disliked the name, he later embraced it after careful consideration and encouragement from his newly self-acclaimed supporters. He further revealed that he has now established a fan base known as the “Tupac Movement.”

“We have the men, and they have done a very good job. I want to thank everyone in Kumasi and all sympathisers for their support.

“I heard that you people have changed my name from Victor Owusu to Tupac, so I am hereby changing my name from Victor Owusu to Tupac. When you see me anywhere, feel free to call me Tupac, because we now have the Tupac Movement,” he said.

Meanwhile, despite the controversies surrounding Daddy Lumba’s burial arrangements, the family successfully held the final burial on December 13, 2025.

Daddy Lumba, who passed away on July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital, was laid to rest on December 13, 2025, after months of family disputes and legal battles that delayed his burial.

Unpaid nurses and midwives threaten strike over 11 months’ arrears

0

Members of the Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives have raised serious concerns over delays in the payment of their eleven months’ arrears, warning that they may be forced to lay down their tools if the government fails to address their grievances.

The coalition, which represents over 6,000 members nationwide, revealed that some members have received only one month’s payment, while about 300 have yet to receive a single month’s salary since they began work in December 2024.

The members expressed frustration over the daily hardships caused by the delayed payments, describing the government’s handling of the matter as deceptive. They said the Ministry of Health had previously assured them that a payment plan would be released following the settlement of the November salary, but no such plan has materialized.

At a press conference held in Ejisu in the Ashanti Region on Monday, December 15, 2025, the group called on the government to honour its commitment and settle all outstanding payments immediately.

“We have responsibilities like rent, families, and children to cater for. Just this month alone, many of our landlords were after us for rent. I mostly commute from Komfo Anokye Hospital to Santasi, and sometimes I have to continue on foot to get home because I haven’t been paid. This situation has affected us deeply,” said Michael Makafui, one of the aggrieved nurses.

He added, “We just want to get paid. We wouldn’t be here if they had paid us. We are not asking for promises; we just want our arrears settled this month.”

The coalition’s warning signals a potential disruption in healthcare services if the government does not take urgent action to resolve the issue.

Sports Minister Kofi Adams inaugurates National Sports Authority Governing Board to drive sector reforms

0

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, has officially inaugurated the Governing Board of the National Sports Authority (NSA), signaling a renewed push for transformative reforms in Ghana’s sports sector.

Addressing the ceremony, Hon. Adams expressed appreciation to the board members for accepting their appointments at a pivotal moment for Ghanaian sports.

“Your presence here today is more than ceremonial; it demonstrates a commitment to repositioning sports administration in Ghana,” he said. “Expectations are high, and we must rise to meet them.”

The Minister emphasized that the focus of Ghana’s sports ecosystem has expanded beyond medals and competitions to include economic impact, social cohesion, job creation, athlete welfare, sustainable infrastructure, and digitized governance.

“Ghana has talent, history, and passion, but also faces gaps, inefficiencies, and outdated structures,” Hon. Adams noted.

He underscored the NSA’s central role in the sector, highlighting its responsibility for facilities management, athlete support, federation governance, grassroots development, and building private sector confidence. “A strong Authority drives sector growth; a weak one holds everything back,” he said.

Since taking office, the Ministry has implemented measures to restore confidence and focus within the sports sector, including improved stakeholder engagement, decentralization, and facility upgrades. Yet, the Minister stressed that these are only the first steps.

“We are now entering a phase that demands bold structural reforms, sharper policy alignment, and performance-based governance,” he added, urging the board to act with urgency, integrity, and practical solutions.

Hon. Adams also called for a review and update of the 2016 Sports Act and the development of a comprehensive national sports policy aligned with the evolving demands of the industry. “Commercialization, athlete protection, digital systems, gender equity, disability inclusion, infrastructure, and private investment are central to a modern sports system,” he said.

Concluding his remarks, the Minister pledged full Ministry support, emphasizing that the board’s collective experience and expertise are essential to achieving meaningful progress. “This is a call to duty,” he affirmed.

The new board marks a significant step in Ghana’s commitment to building a more competitive, inclusive, and sustainable sports sector.

Industrial Minerals Hold Untapped Revenue Potential – ACEP

0

Mabel Acquaye

Ghana could significantly increase revenues from its industrial minerals sector if regulatory oversight, value addition and monitoring systems are strengthened, Senior Policy Analyst at the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), Mabel Acquaye, has said.

She made the call while delivering a presentation at a capacity-building workshop for parliamentary correspondents, where she highlighted how weak governance and limited attention to industrial minerals continue to undermine their contribution to national development.

According to Mrs. Acquaye, studies by ACEP indicate that the country can generate up to 18 times more revenue from the quarry sector alone if proper regulatory and revenue monitoring mechanisms are enforced.

She noted that while attention has largely focused on precious minerals such as gold, industrial minerals, including limestone, clay, salt, sand and sandstone, remain severely underutilised despite their high domestic consumption rates.

She explained that gold accounts for over 90 percent of the country’s mineral exports, yet the mining sector’s contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) remains relatively low compared to agriculture.

In contrast, industrial minerals, which are largely consumed locally, offer stronger opportunities for value addition, job creation and stable revenues since they are less exposed to international price volatility.

Mrs. Acquaye stressed that globally, industrial and development minerals account for more than 80 percent of total mineral production, while high-value precious minerals make up less than 20 percent.

However, she said Africa, including Ghana, has failed to reflect this global trend in policy focus, governance frameworks and investment priorities.

She cited countries such as Uganda, Zambia and Cameroon as examples where industrial minerals have been prioritised through targeted mining policies, regulation of construction minerals and support for artisanal and small-scale mining.

Ghana, she noted, still treats all minerals under a single regulatory framework, limiting the country’s ability to optimise the industrial minerals value chain.

A major challenge, she pointed out, is weak revenue oversight at quarry and industrial mineral sites.

Unlike large-scale mining operations, she said, institutions such as the Ghana Revenue Authority and the Minerals Commission have limited on-site presence, relying largely on self-reported production data from companies, a situation that creates room for under-reporting and revenue leakages.

To address this, Mrs. Acquaye advocated the adoption of remote monitoring technology, including laser scanners at quarry entry and exit points, to independently verify production volumes in real time.

She explained that such systems would improve royalty collection, enhance transparency, reduce disputes and allow both regulators and the public to track production and revenues through digital dashboards.

She further called for legislative reforms, stronger institutional coordination and capacity building for regulators and security agencies to ensure compliance, arguing that industrial minerals could become a key driver of local industrialisation, infrastructure development and inclusive economic growth if properly governed.

Jobless environmental health officers demand postings, recognition

0

Unemployed environmental health officers and assistants have taken to the streets to protest years of unemployment and what they describe as sustained neglect by the state.

The demonstrators are demanding immediate employment, postings, and formal recognition for trained environmental health officers, assistants, and graduates of the School of Hygiene.
The protest began at Independence Square on Monday, December 15, and is scheduled to pass through the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Local Government before concluding at Flagstaff House.

Speaking to Citi News during the protest, Gloria Apam, one of the demonstrators, expressed deep frustration over the prolonged lack of opportunities.

“We are not giving up; we have to be posted. We are tired, please post us now. We are tired of staying at home. If you know our profession is not needed, then close the school,” she said.

The Unemployed Officers protestors chant “No posting, No going” as they arrive at the Ministry of Finance to present a petition.

GACC takes anti-corruption campaign to schools in Manso Nkwanta

By Yussif Ibrahim, GNA

Manso Nkwanta (Ash), Dec. 15, GNA – The Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) has taken its 2025 International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD) campaign to selected basic and senior high schools in the Amansie West District, sensitising students to resist, reject and report corruption.

Held under the theme, “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption, Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity,” the Coalition visited Manso Nkwanta D/A JHS, Manso Nkwanta Methodist JHS and Mansoman Senior High School.

More than 1,600 students participated in the sensitisation sessions.

Madam Beauty Emefa Narteh, the Executive Secretary of GACC, in an address read on her behalf, said Ghana’s participation in the 2025 IACD underscored the country’s collective commitment to fighting corruption, which she described as a major drain on public resources and a threat to institutional integrity.

She noted that corruption weakened institutions, deepened inequality and eroded public trust, adding that, its effects were felt most by young people whose opportunities were curtailed when systems meant to serve them were compromised.

“Every loss through corruption is a missed opportunity for better schools, improved healthcare, stronger infrastructure and decent jobs,” she stated.

Madam Narteh disclosed that the activities were supported by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the GIZ/EU-funded PAIRed Programme.

She urged the youth to commit to the three key principles of anti-corruption advocacy – Resist, Reject and Report corruption and to serve as defenders of integrity in their communities.

Facilitators later took the students through presentations on the significance of International Anti-Corruption Day, which has been observed annually on December 9 since the adoption of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) in 2003.

The sessions focused on whistleblowing, the Whistleblower Act, 2006 (Act 720), the Witness Protection Act, 2018 (Act 975), and the critical role of the youth in curbing corruption.

They were educated on common forms of corruption, including bribery, embezzlement, fraud, favouritism, extortion, nepotism, conflict of interest and abuse of discretion.

Discussions further highlighted how corruption affects young people through underfunded schools, limited job opportunities and restricted access to healthcare, all of which hinder personal development and participation in decision-making.

The students were encouraged to speak up against wrongdoing, use social media responsibly to promote integrity, and actively participate in responsible decision-making processeand5

They should move away from the normalisation of corruption and instead embrace the culture of resisting, rejecting and reporting it.

Why Awujale nomination meeting was halted — Ruling house

0

Facts emerged on Sunday on why the nomination meeting of candidates for the vacant stool of the Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland was put on hold by the Fusengbuwa ruling house.

The PUNCH Online also learnt that no fewer than 60 candidates are jostling to become the next Awujale.

Recall that the Fusengbuwa ruling house, which is next in line to produce the Awujale of Ijebuland following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona at the age of 91 in July 2025, had last Thursday formally announced that the nomination meeting would hold on Monday.

The announcement was contained in a letter dated December 11, 2025, and signed by the family’s spokesman, Abiodun Ogidan.

The meeting was scheduled to hold at Bisrod Hall, GRA, Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State.

The ruling house outlined strict protocols for the exercise, emphasising that only accredited family members would be allowed entry.

It also stated that each candidate contesting for the vacant stool would be represented by two family members, with one nominating the candidate and the other seconding the nomination.

The ruling house further directed that candidates themselves would not be part of the nomination meeting, but would instead be represented by their nominees.

Family members and accredited representatives were also urged to conduct themselves with utmost peace, respect and orderliness befitting the sacred process.

However, in another statement issued on Friday by the Nomination Committee, the ruling house announced the postponement of the meeting.

Titled “To All Members of Fusengbuwa Ruling House, Ijebu-Ode,” the statement read in part: “Due to circumstances beyond the family’s control, the Fusengbuwa Ruling House Awujale nomination meeting scheduled for Monday, December 15, 2025, has been postponed.

“The new date will be announced shortly. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Speaking exclusively with our correspondent on Sunday, the Chairman of the Fusengbuwa ruling house and former National President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Otunba Abdulateef Owoyemi, said the meeting was put on hold following an intervention by the state government to prevent procedural errors that could result in litigation.

Owoyemi explained that the ruling house was summoned to a meeting by the state government on Tuesday to review the steps taken so far and ensure compliance with extant laws.

He dismissed insinuations that the postponement was connected to the candidature of Fuji musician, Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM1, whom the ruling house had reportedly said was not a member of the Fusengbuwa ruling house and therefore not qualified to contest.

“The postponement of the nomination meeting has nothing to do with any individual, far from that,” Owoyemi said.

“What actually happened is that we received a summons from the state government for a meeting on Tuesday. The meeting is to ensure that everything is done properly so that the selection process does not become a fertile ground for litigation or generate legal controversy.

“It is a matter of comparing notes and ensuring that we cross our Ts and dot our Is. We appreciate this because it will improve our standards and ensure that the process is flawless. There is nothing to worry about.”

The Vice Chairman of the ruling house, Prof. Fassy Yusuf, also confirmed on Sunday that the ruling house and the kingmakers had been invited to a meeting with the government on Tuesday, necessitating the postponement of the nomination meeting.

Prof. Yusuf said the number of princes aspiring to succeed the late Awujale, Oba Adetona, was not fewer than 60.

Speaking on the phone, the Professor of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos said, “There are certain things we have not done, so the government has scheduled a meeting with us for Tuesday. The government will meet with the ruling house, the kingmakers and the Awujale Interregnum Committee.

“It is to ensure that everything is in order, and the outcome of this meeting will determine when next we will hold the nomination meeting.

“The postponement has nothing to do with anyone. Whoever is saying that is only being mischievous and spreading falsehood. So far, about 60 people are in the race to become the next Awujale.”

Efforts to find a successor to the late Oba Adetona, who reigned for 65 years before his death in July 2025, had recently gathered momentum after the local government reportedly gave the ruling house 14 days to present candidates for the throne.

I do not have time for Bawumia – Kennedy Agyapong

0

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has asserted that former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, holds no significance in his life.

According to Mr Agyapong, Dr Bawumia “does not exist” in his life.

“I do not have time for Dr Bawumia. In my life, he does not exist, because if he existed, I might commit a crime. That is how I see myself,” Agyapong said.

He added that Dr Bawumia was behind controversial statements made by the Bono Regional Chairman of the Party, Kwame Baffoe, widely known as Abronye DC, but refused to comment further.

Mr Agyapong also criticised internal party tactics, warning against attempts to manipulate the upcoming NPP flagbearer election.

“I do not have time for them, but that does not mean they have to rig the election. I believe in the structures, and I know all the Electoral Commission officials my opponents have engaged with. They plan to use the party’s internal security to humiliate anyone who comes close,” he asserted.

Recalling a prior incident at the residence of former President Nana Akufo-Addo, Agyapong claimed his words had been misrepresented on social media.

“Some time ago, something happened at the residence of former President Akufo-Addo. I mentioned a certain man’s name; there was nobody there when I left. The next day, it was posted on social media, but I do not have anything against anybody,” he said.

Speaking in a recent interview on Accra based United Television, Mr Agyapong also expressed disappointment at what he described as a lack of recognition for his contributions to the party.

“Did I not campaign for him during the recent election? After that, did he even call me to appreciate my efforts? His followers were even insulting me. The only loyal person from his camp was NAPO. I took him to my warehouse and gave out items freely. He had young boys who claimed that I never campaigned,” he lamented.

‘The body in Daddy Lumba’s coffin wasn’t fake’

Faustina Fosu, a family member of the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba, has dismissed claims circulating on social media that the body laid in the musician’s coffin was not his.

Speaking to the media on December 14, 2025, she described the allegations as false and misleading, stressing that she personally saw the late musician and confirmed his identity.

“He’s the one and he was looking good when I saw him. People were alleging it was a toy that was in the coffin but it’s not true,” she said.

‘He has taken all my happiness away’ – Daddy Lumba’s sister cries

Faustina Fosu explained that certain decisions taken during the funeral arrangements were in line with the late Daddy Lumba’s wishes before his death.

“Daddy Lumba said it before he died that we shouldn’t reveal his face and he also didn’t want us to lay him in public,” she disclosed.

According to her, despite the musician’s instructions, the family decided to allow a public laying-in-state due to the spread of false narratives.

“People know how to fabricate lies, that’s why we decided to lay him in public so we covered his face was just to honor his wish,” she added.

Eastern Region: Protect Okanta settlers

0

The Ga-Dangme Council has condemned what it describes as unlawful attempts to forcibly eject Ga-Dangme settlers from Okanta in the Eastern Region, following reports and videos of threats and intimidation against the community.

In a press release issued on December 14, 2025, and signed by its President, J. Ayikoi Otoo, the Council said Ga-Dangme families have lived, occupied, and possessed land in Okanta peacefully for nearly 200 years.

According to the statement, these families migrated from the Greater Accra Region several generations ago and have since established permanent homes and livelihoods in the area.

The Council said the settlers have coexisted peacefully with neighbouring communities over the years, contributing to agriculture, trade, and social development without any challenge to their presence or land ownership.

It accused some individuals, claiming to be indigenes of the Eastern Region, of using threats, harassment, and force to dislodge the Ga-Dangme families, allegedly to hand the land over to illegal mining operators. The Council described such actions as reckless, intimidating, and illegal.

Citing the 1992 Constitution, the Ga-Dangme Council stressed that every person has the right to own property and cannot be arbitrarily deprived of it. It also noted that Ghanaian law recognises long, peaceful occupation of land and protects settlers from eviction based solely on claims of indigeneity.

The Council further referenced the Land Act, 2020, which recognises the rights of settlers who have occupied land for extended periods, and said any land dispute must be resolved through the courts or recognised traditional authorities, not through acts of vigilantism.

It warned that the reported actions in Okanta violate constitutional provisions guaranteeing human dignity and prohibiting discrimination based on ethnicity or place of origin.

The Ga-Dangme Council has called on the Eastern Regional Security Council and law enforcement agencies to intervene immediately to maintain peace and protect lives and property. It also urged the National and Eastern Regional Houses of Chiefs, as well as local opinion leaders, to prevent the abuse of customary authority and to promote dialogue and peaceful coexistence.

While reaffirming its commitment to peace and unity, the Council said it will pursue all lawful and constitutional means to defend the rights, dignity and ancestral heritage of Ga-Dangme people across Ghana.

Cubag Charts Path For Sustainable Growth At Agm

The Customs Brokers Association of Ghana (CUBAG) has renewed its commitment to professional excellence, technology-driven operations and strategic partnerships to support sustainable trade growth, following its 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Koforidua.
The AGM, which attracted customs brokers, regulators, traditional authorities and private sector partners, was held under the theme “Empowering Progress: CUBAG’s Commitment to People, Technology and Partnerships for Sustainable Growth.”

Addressing the gathering, President of CUBAG, Nana Fredua Ofori-Atta, described the meeting as a significant milestone, marking the association’s third consecutive AGM and reflecting steady institutional progress for the 33-year-old professional body.
He highlighted key achievements over the year under review, including enhanced member welfare, strengthened advocacy and expanded training programmes aimed at improving professionalism within the customs brokerage industry.

“As customs brokers, we remain central to international trade. Our continued relevance will depend on deliberate investments in our people, innovative technology and strong partnerships,” the CUBAG President stated.

Among the major welfare reforms announced was the successful rollout of a Group Life Welfare Insurance Policy for members, which has already enrolled nearly 1,000 staff and over 300 directors, significantly improving benefits for members and their employees.

Nana Fredua Ofori-Atta also reported progress at the CUBAG Training Institute (CTI), which has trained more than 200 participants since 2024 through short courses and collaborative programmes with institutions including the World Customs Organization (WCO), GIZ, Ghana Link Network Services and the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

On global trade developments, he noted that although international trade in 2025 has remained resilient, rising tariffs, geopolitical tensions and financial volatility continue to affect smaller firms and developing economies, underscoring the need for long-term strategic planning within the sector.

Delivering the keynote address, Director of Operations at Ghana Link Network Services Limited, Raymond Amaglo, commended CUBAG for its instrumental role in the success of the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS), five years after its deployment.

Mr. Amaglo described ICUMS as a product of resilience and partnership, noting that feedback and cooperation from customs brokers have contributed significantly to system improvements, compliance and operational efficiency.

“The success of ICUMS is inseparable from the professionalism of customs brokers. Digital transformation works best when people trust the system and work together,” he said.

He also announced the completion of an ultra-modern Tier-4 Data Centre, which is expected to deliver near-zero downtime, enhanced cybersecurity and faster processing capacity to support Ghana’s 24-hour economy agenda.

Representing the Commissioner of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan, as the Special Guest of Honour, the Deputy Commissioner of Operations at Customs, Aaron Kanor, reaffirmed Customs’ recognition of CUBAG as a key partner in Ghana’s trade ecosystem.

He said the AGM theme aligns closely with the Customs Division’s strategic direction and the national agenda for economic recovery and transformation.

“The role of customs brokers cannot be overstated. You serve as the bridge between importers, exporters, Customs and other regulatory agencies. The accuracy of declarations, timeliness of submissions and integrity of your work directly affect trade facilitation and revenue mobilisation,” he noted.

He commended CUBAG for promoting competence, discipline and ethical conduct among its members and encouraged brokers to continue prioritising training, especially as customs processes become increasingly digitised.

Mr. Kanor further urged members to support Customs’ revenue mobilisation drive through accurate valuation, proper classification and full compliance with customs laws, stressing that customs revenue remains critical to national development.

Ghana named UN Waste Hub on back of Zoomlion’s infrastructure – Minister

0

Ghana’s recognition by the United Nations as the Sanitation and Waste Management Hub for West Africa in 2025 is credited largely to the extensive infrastructure built by Zoomlion Ghana Limited, the Minister of Local Government has revealed.

Ahmed Ibrahim, speaking at a thanksgiving ceremony for the Jospong Group on Friday, December 12, 2025, in Accra, detailed how the company’s 36 advanced treatment plants positioned the nation as a continental leader.

“In fact, in 2025, the United Nations adjudged Ghana the Sanitation and Waste Management Hub for West Africa—thanks in large part to Jospong and Zoomlion’s comprehensive sanitation infrastructure,” he stated.

He provided tangible evidence of this capability, citing an official benchmarking trip to South Korea. “Only two African countries impressed the Koreans: Ghana and Morocco,” Ibrahim said. “When they saw our integrated systems—our recycling plants, composting facilities, and medical waste treatment centres—they asked, ‘How did Ghana achieve this?’”

“The answer is simple. A strong public–private partnership between government and the Jospong Group,” the Minister declared.

He identified the core of this achievement as “the 36 completed composting, recycling, and waste treatment plants—the largest sanitation infrastructure in West Africa.”

This network, developed over years of partnership, has not only solved local waste challenges but has also made Ghana a regional model, he said.

The Minister traced the journey of this infrastructure from its humble origins, stating, “From a small office at Jamestown, Jospong has grown into a continental giant.” He revealed the group now “operates in over 14 sectors, with 78 subsidiaries, and has expanded to more than 24 African countries.”

He shared that this infrastructure has become a point of national pride and curiosity abroad, noting, “In all these countries, leaders ask me, ‘What is Ghana’s secret?’ And I tell them about the 36 completed composting, recycling, and waste treatment plants.”

Ibrahim’s testimony underscores how strategic investment in domestic waste management infrastructure, led by Zoomlion, has propelled Ghana onto the global stage of sustainability and environmental stewardship, turning a public service into a point of national pride and international acclaim.

In a welcome address, the Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group, Dr Siaw Agyepong, attributed the corporation’s remarkable growth from a single printing press to a multi-national industrial leader to divine providence and consistent national support.

He reflected on the Group’s evolution, stating, “Thus far has the Lord helped us.”

He detailed the scale of their flagship environmental arm, Zoomlion, revealing it now operates “36 functional plants spanning solid waste, liquid waste and medical waste treatment,” making Ghana a “centre of industrial excellence on the African continent.”

The Group’s footprint, which began at the Jospong Printing Press in Jamestown in 1995, he stated, now extends across “more than 25 African countries including Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, The Gambia and Gabon.”

Dr Siaw Agyepong indicated that “Truly, this is the doing of the Lord, and it is marvellous in our eyes.”

Acknowledging pivotal governmental support, he paid tribute to late President Jerry John Rawlings, who visited Zoomlion facilities “even on his birthday,” late President Professor John Evans Fiifi Atta Millis, former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He recalled the early days of meeting the then-President (Kufuor) noting, “I was frightened.”

He also expressed profound gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady, Lordina Mahama, for their immense support for his Group.

Dr Siaw Agyepong noted that the company’s success was not merely a result of strategy but a “manifestation of divine covenant, revelation and mystery,” framing the group’s story as a national testimony of what is possible with vision and enablement.

In attendance were ministers of state, including Sam George, members of Parliament, traditional authorities, members of the diplomatic corps, clergy, Muslim clerics, civil society organisations, business owners, and Jospong Group workers.

My future is at stake if Kennedy Agyapong becomes president – Adwoa Safo

Former Member of Parliament for Dome–Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has claimed that her life and future would be at risk if New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong were to become President of Ghana.

According to her, the previous NPP administration was characterised by what she described as a “family and friends” style of governance, which she believes contributed significantly to the party’s poor performance in the 2024 general election.

Speaking during a campaign engagement on behalf of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who is seeking to become the NPP’s flagbearer, Adwoa Safo asserted that Kennedy Agyapong would be the wrong choice for the party.

‘Was Bawumia the finance minister?’ – Adwoa Safo dismisses blame for NPP’s defeat

She referenced her personal relationship with the former Assin Central MP, saying:

“I have two children with Kennedy Agyapong, but I can assure you that if he becomes president and I send my Curriculum Vitae to his office, there is no way he will employ me because he wouldn’t be running a family and friends government.

“I am not saying he will become president, but let us assume he does. If I submit my CV to his office, considering the work I have done as a Minister and as a Deputy Majority Leader, and he looks at me and says, ‘You are the woman I have two children with, so I am appointing you as a minister,’ there will be chaos in Ghana if he goes down that path.”

Adwoa Safo further stressed that her future would be at stake if Kennedy Agyapong were elected president, insisting that the party must choose a candidate who can unite its base and restore public confidence.

“The Kennedy Agyapong I know would never appoint me, and that is why my political career and my future would be at stake if he becomes president,” she stated.

How a player faked career stats on Wikipedia to join Lithuanian club

0

In 2018, FK Panevėžys, a Lithuanian second-division football club, announced the signing of French-Angolan forward Barkley Miguel Panzo, expecting to add a prolific striker to their squad.

The club highlighted his record of scoring 45 goals in 36 appearances for Queens Park Rangers (QPR) and representing the Angola national team.

These statistics, however, were later found to be inaccurate. Miguel Panzo had never played for QPR’s first team, nor had he made official appearances for Angola.

The inflated numbers had originated from his Wikipedia page, which the club had reportedly used as a reference.

Following the revelation, FK Panevėžys removed the announcement and clarified that the previously reported statistics were incorrect. Miguel Panzo made at least one appearance for the club.

Before joining FK Panevėžys, Miguel Panzo had played for Syrianska FC in Sweden. After leaving Lithuania, his career included stints at Vittoriosa United in Malta, NK Krsko in Slovenia, and Mauerwerk in Austria.

Transfer records show he joined Vittoriosa in July 2019, moved to NK Krsko in January 2021 for €25,000, and later transferred to Mauerwerk. He retired following the 2021/22 season.

During his career after Panevėžys, Miguel Panzo had periods without a club, including in early 2020, but continued to participate in professional football across several countries. His Wikipedia page has since been updated to reflect verified information.

The signing drew attention in football circles due to the unusual circumstances. FK Panevėžys continued its participation in the 2018 Lithuanian second division following Miguel Panzo’s departure.

GSFP begins nationwide practical training for school feeding caterers

0

The Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) has rolled out a nationwide practical training programme for caterers and head cooks in beneficiary schools, aimed at improving the quality, safety and nutritional value of meals served to pupils.

The exercise, which covers all 16 regions of the country, is being carried out in collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Women in Agricultural Development (WIAD) Directorate of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

According to the GSFP, the training places strong emphasis on nutrition, hygiene, food safety and best practices in meal preparation, with a focus on equipping caterers with practical, hands-on skills to consistently deliver safe and nutritious meals to schoolchildren.

To ensure effective coordination and nationwide coverage, the country has been divided into three zones – Southern, Middle and Northern belts – with training sessions being held at 82 designated centres across the country.

The practical training programme officially commenced on December 15, 2025, and is currently underway in the Bono, Volta and Oti regions. Other regions are expected to follow according to the rollout schedule.

Officials say the initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen service delivery under the School Feeding Programme and safeguard the health and well-being of pupils in beneficiary schools.

The GSFP noted that improving the capacity of caterers remains critical to achieving the programme’s objectives, especially as school feeding continues to play a key role in boosting school enrolment, retention and nutrition outcomes nationwide.

Troubled Akufo-Addo seeks Mahama’s audience for Ofori-Atta’s return
