Military Justifies Fatal Shooting Of 7 Illegal Miners

0

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has defended its actions following the death of seven illegal miners during a confrontation at the Anglo Gold Ashanti mines in Obuasi.

The incident occurred late Saturday night, January 18, 2025, when a group of approximately 60 individuals attempted to invade the mine’s legal concession for unauthorized gold mining activities.

In a press release issued by Brig. Gen. E Aggrey Quashie, Director General of Public Relations for GAF, the illegal miners breached the security perimeter at Cote D’or Ramp.

The military patrol, part of Operation HALT II, was deployed to protect the area and confronted the intruders.

According to the statement, the illegal miners responded with aggression, firing upon the soldiers as they attempted to prevent access to the Deep Decline site.

“The assailants were reportedly armed with locally manufactured rifles, pump action guns, gas cylinders, knives, heavy-duty industrial bolt cutters, axes, and machetes,” the statement read.

In response to the gunfire, GAF stated that the troops returned fire in self-defense. Adding that the ensuing shootout resulted in the deaths of seven illegal miners, while one other individual sustained serious injuries.

” The remaining miners fled the scene. One soldier was also injured from pellets fired from a pump action gun but has since received medical treatment,” statement added.

GAF emphasized that military personnel on authorized duty are entitled to defend themselves and protect innocent civilians and property, including the use of lethal force when necessary.

GAF urged all illegal miners to stay away from mining concessions and also desist from engaging troops in shootouts since the consequences of such actions could be fatal.

Joint security force detains men at former MCE’s residence

0

Some young men have been arrested by a joint security force at the residence of Lenwah Kwame Bright, the former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Nkwanta.

The arrest comes in the wake of heightened tensions and ongoing violence in the Nkwanta South Municipality, which has led to the displacement of hundreds of residents.

While details about the identities of the arrested individuals and the reasons for their presence at the former MCE’s residence remain unclear, the incident has raised further questions amid the unrest in the area.

A renewed ethnic conflict in Nkwanta, the capital of the Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly, has claimed the lives of seven people and forced approximately 200 residents to flee their homes. The violence has also left eight houses and shops burned to the ground, with the township now resembling a ghost town.

The conflict, rooted in a long-standing ownership dispute between the Akyode, Adele, and Challa ethnic groups, escalated when unidentified armed men disrupted a burial ceremony at a cemetery.

According to an eyewitness, the group of mourners had just completed burning the remains of their relative when gunfire erupted, forcing them to flee unharmed.

In response to the unrest, a joint security force has been deployed to Nkwanta. Military personnel in armoured vehicles have taken strategic positions in the town, patrolling the streets to restore order.

However, residents expressed mixed feelings about the presence of the military, with some fearing potential human rights abuses.

“I Did My Best for Ghana”

President Nana Akufo Addo
Nana Akufo Addo

Former President Nana Akufo-Addo, in a heartfelt address at a thanksgiving mass held in his honor on January 18, 2025, at Accra Ridge Church, bid farewell to his presidency, reflecting on the legacy he leaves behind after two terms in office.

With a sense of pride and fulfillment, Akufo-Addo took stock of the significant milestones achieved during his administration, emphasizing the long-term impact of the policies he championed.

Speaking candidly, the former president outlined the key areas of progress that, in his view, will shape the future of Ghana for years to come. He pointed to his government’s achievements in educational reform, healthcare delivery, industrial development, agricultural expansion, infrastructure, digital transformation, and environmental protection. These, he said, are no longer mere promises but tangible accomplishments now etched in the nation’s history.

“The records of my two governments in these areas are now matters of history, and I am content to await the verdict of history on their benefits,” Akufo-Addo remarked, acknowledging the weight of his presidency in shaping the country’s trajectory. He expressed a deep belief that while immediate results can be seen, the true measure of his administration’s success would only be revealed by history.

In his address, Akufo-Addo also touched on other critical achievements during his tenure. He pointed to the strengthening of Ghana’s national security, particularly in the face of growing terrorism threats from the Sahel region. He also highlighted his administration’s role in reviving Ghana’s economy, which had faced significant challenges earlier in the decade.

“The unleashing of Ghana’s tourism potential, the enhancement of our global image, our contributions to the integration of ECOWAS and Africa, and the engagement of the global African community” were also among the milestones he proudly cited, reflecting his administration’s broad focus on both national and international development.

Despite the inevitable criticism that accompanies any presidency, Akufo-Addo stood firm in his conviction about the contributions of his government. “Despite what the naysayers say, I did my best for Ghana,” he affirmed, expressing satisfaction with the efforts and achievements of his presidency.

As Akufo-Addo prepares to step away from office, his remarks serve as a poignant reminder of his belief in the enduring power of his policies and their potential to influence Ghana’s future. With a legacy anchored in transformative reforms and global engagement, the verdict on his presidency will indeed be a matter for history to judge.

Inferiority complex is a silent struggle we must address – Helen Paul

0

Nigerian comedian Helen Paul Nigerian comedian Helen Paul

Nigerian comedian Helen Paul delved into the complex issues surrounding self-worth and societal expectations during her appearance on the Honest Bunch podcast monitored by MyNewsGh.

She highlighted how people often feel pressured to project an image of success, even when they struggle internally.

“Everyone has some level of inferiority complex. Sometimes, you want to impress people, snapping pictures with flashy cars like Bugattis to post online. But deep down, you’re only trying to convince yourself, not them,” she said.

She emphasised that true self-worth cannot be found in material possessions or societal validation.

“If you’re snapping Bugatti pictures to post on Instagram, you’re likely only impressing yourself. At the end of the day, it’s about feeling good within.”

Helen also touched on familial pressures, especially for those in public-facing professions.

“When you’re on TV, family members often think you have so much money. My mum, for instance, would calculate feeding money for weeks and then call with a new figure.”

She however, revealed her humorous strategy for managing such expectations.

“I started giving my mum’s twin sister money and told her to share it with my mum however she wanted. That way, I balanced the pressure without losing my peace.”

ORAL has come to stay!

0

MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

MP for North Tongu and chairperson of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) committee, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, has defended the anti-corruption initiative amidst attacks from the Minority caucus in Parliament.

In a statement on Twitter on January 19, 2025, Ablakwa claimed that the NPP’s criticism stems from fear that their members’ alleged wrongdoings will be exposed.

Ablakwa highlighted a controversial land deal involving NPP MP Kennedy Osei Nyarko, who reportedly acquired prime public land in Cantonments for a mere GHS42,000.00 (US$2,800.00) under President Akufo-Addo’s authorization in 2021.

“Unimpeachable and irrefutable Lands Commission documents reveal that President Akufo-Addo authorized this outrageously unconscionable transaction in 2021. (See attached).

“The NPP MP who benefited from this condemnable rip-off is Hon. Kennedy Osei Nyarko, MP for Akim Swedru.

“The unbelievable terms of this sweetheart deal only required the MP to pay an annual ground rent of a meagre GHS10,500.00 from 1st January, 2021 to 31st December, 2024 amounting to GHS42,000.00 (US$2,800.00) for him to take over the land,” he said.

Ablakwa emphasized that public lands belong to all Ghanaians and criticized the former administration for looting state assets.

“What is not right is certainly not right. I know there are many patriotic NPP members who will not support such naked injustice.

“Those who have not looted from the Ghanaian people do not attack ORAL — indeed, they boldly support ORAL, as the Constitution demands of all good citizens.

“The current generation of politicians must reflect and acknowledge that if those who came before us engaged in such despicable unpatriotic conduct, no state asset would have been left for us.

He called for unity in supporting ORAL and proposed a new bill to ban politicians from purchasing state assets without parliamentary approval and value for money audits.

“For our collective good as a nation— let us ignore those who seek to reduce this to a pedestrian NDC-NPP banter. Let’s remain united and focused in stopping the looting brigade.

“ORAL has come to stay! State Capture shall surely be defeated! The loot shall be recovered!” he added.

What is ORAL?

Operational Recover All Loot (ORAL) is an initiative launched by President John Dramani Mahama before he formally assumed office.

The primary objective of ORAL is to recover misappropriated public funds and state properties, addressing corruption and promoting accountability in government.

The initiative has garnered support from anti-corruption advocates but also faced criticism, particularly from members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Critics question the legality of ORAL, arguing that Mahama lacked the authority to establish it as president-elect.

They also suggest that the initiative may be politically motivated and could lead to harassment of former government officials.

Despite these criticisms, ORAL aims to promote accountability, deter corruption, and recover stolen assets, which can be redirected to critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

‘Don’t Waste Time On NPP’s Unfinished Projects, Start New Ones’ – Counselor Lutterodt To Dzifa Gomashie

0

Counselor George Lutterodt, known for his outspoken and often controversial views, recently made waves on UTV’s United Showbiz with his opinion on the Minister-designate for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts. Lutterodt, who is no stranger to stirring up debates, advised the incoming minister to focus on initiating new projects rather than trying to complete those left unfinished by the previous NPP government.

He boldly stated, “Whatever they are going to do, if it demands that they should ignore what NPP have done, they should ignore it and start their own.” Lutterodt made it clear that the minister should not be weighed down by any unfinished business from the past administration. Instead, he emphasized the importance of forging ahead with new plans and tackling issues that align with her own vision.

Lutterodt suggested that if certain projects from the past government were not practical to continue, the minister should not feel obligated to pursue them. “If it is not practicable to them, they shouldn’t hear the noise from us to do it.

While his comments were met with some disagreement from fellow panel members, Lutterodt remained firm in his stance. He believed that the new minister should not let the pressure of continuing previous government projects hold her back. Instead, she should focus on starting fresh and pursuing new, achievable goals without being burdened by the past.

President John Dramani Mahama has directed an immediate investigation into the violent clashes between illegal miners and military personnel stationed at AngloGold Ashanti Mines.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday, January 18, 2025, around 11:00 PM, involved a group of approximately 60 illegal miners breaching the security fence in an attempt to access the mine’s Deep Decline area.

In a statement issued on January 19, the President called for anyone found to have acted unlawfully during the incident to be held accountable.

President Mahama expressed profound regret over the tragic loss of eight lives and extended his condolences to the bereaved families.

“The Government wishes to express deep regret over the tragic loss of up to eight (8) lives, said to be illegal miners, following a violent clash at a mining site in Obuasi.

“In response to the unfortunate incident, President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an immediate investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the clashes and ensure that any individuals found to have acted unlawfully are brought to justice.”

The government has asked the management of Anglo-Gold Ashanti to bear the medical expenses of the injured individuals fully and to facilitate the burial arrangements for those who have lost their lives.

The security agencies have also been tasked to take prompt action to restore peace in the area and implement measures to prevent similar occurrences.

According to a press release issued by the Department of Public Relations at the Ghana Armed Forces, the miners, armed with locally manufactured rifles, pump-action guns, knives, axes, gas cylinders, and other tools, opened fire on the military personnel when confronted.

In self-defence, the soldiers returned fire, resulting in the fatalities and leaving one illegal miner seriously injured. The remaining individuals fled the scene.

The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed the deaths of seven illegal miners following a violent clash with soldiers on duty at the AngloGold Ashanti Mines in Obuasi.

TikTok is coming back online after Trump pledged to restore it

0

TikTok appears to be coming back online just hours after President-elect Donald Trump pledged Sunday that he would sign an executive order Monday to save the banned app.

Around 12 hours after first shutting itself down, US users began to have access to TikTok on a web browser and in the app, although the page still showed a warning about the shutdown.

The whiplash move to bring the app back comes after TikTok became unusable for Americans late Saturday night. Users who tried to open the app at that time were met with a message saying it was offline and asking users to “stay tuned.”

“A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use TikTok for now,” TikTok’s message read in part. The app was also unavailable on the Apple and Google Play stores, along with Lemon8 and CapCut, which are also owned by TikTok’s China-based parent company, ByteDance.

TikTok’s restoration will be welcome news for the app’s 170 million American users, many of whom use the app for hours every day to find news, entertainment and community and, in some cases, to make a living, after weeks of uncertainty.

And it signaled that Trump may be poised to score a major political victory by claiming responsibility for bringing back the popular platform. In a statement midday Sunday, TikTok said Trump’s promise to save the app allowed it to restore US users’ access even before his expected executive order is signed.

“In agreement with our service providers, TikTok is in the process of restoring service. We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive,” the company said in a statement. “We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States.”

But while TikTok’s shutdown lasted just a few hours, securing the app’s long-term future in the United States is likely to be more complicated.

The path to securing TikTok’s future

Trump said Sunday in a Truth Social post that he plans to issue an executive order following his inauguration on Monday to “extend the period of time before the law’s prohibitions take effect, so that we can make a deal to protect our national security.”

He urged TikTok’s partners to allow the app to be restored, saying “the order will also confirm that there will be no liability for any company that helped keep TikTok from going dark before my order.”

“Americans deserve to see our exciting Inauguration on Monday, as well as other events and conversations,” Trump said.

Trump had said he was considering a 90-day extension in the ban to give him time to work out a deal to sell the app to a non-Chinese owner. In his post, Trump said he would seek a 50-50 joint venture between TikTok’s existing parent company, China-based ByteDance, and a new, American owner.

Such an announcement could serve as a kind of immediate political victory for Trump with America’s youth. Although Trump supported a TikTok ban in his first term as president, he has recently said he wants to keep the app alive — posting on Truth Social Sunday morning: “SAVE TIKTOK!” Last month, he asked the Supreme Court to stay the law so his incoming administration could work out a deal to keep TikTok available to Americans. The Supreme Court upheld the law on Friday.

TikTok appealed to Trump in its pop-up message on the app starting late Saturday night notifying users that the app was unavailable in the United States.

“We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office,” the company posted in its pop-up message. “Please stay tuned!”

And TikTok CEO Shou Chew also lauded Trump in a video responding to the company’s Supreme Court loss on Friday, saying, “we are grateful and pleased to have the support of a president who truly understands our platform, one who has used TikTok to express his own thoughts and perspectives, connecting with the world and generating more than 60 billion views of his content in the process.”

Trump attributed his election victory in part to TikTok at a press conference at Mar-a-Lago in December.

“I have a warm spot in my heart for TikTok,” Trump said, then claiming to have won the youth vote by a significant margin. “And there are those that say that TikTok had something to do with it.”

The law banning TikTok passed with strong bipartisan support in Congress, citing national security concerns. Although a Pew Research Center Survey in 2023 found about half of Americans supported the ban, it has consistently proven unpopular with younger generations.

With his executive order, Trump is expected to delay enforcement of the ban to give TikTok parent company ByteDance more time to find an American owner. Trump’s Sunday message may have been enough to reassure TikTok’s technology partners, including Oracle, which hosts TikTok’s content in the United States, and Apple and Google, which host the app on their app stores, to continue supporting the app. Under the law, those companies could face penalties of up to $5,000 per person who has access to TikTok, if it is enforced.

Not a permanent solution

But the executive order could face challenges, including from members of Trump’s own party, who say they oppose any extension of the ban.

“We commend Amazon, Apple, Google and Microsoft for following the law and halting operations with ByteDance and TikTok, and we encourage other companies to do the same,” Republican Senators Tom Cotton, of Arkansas, and Pete Ricketts, of Nebraska, wrote in a joint statement Sunday. “The law, after all, risks ruinous bankruptcy for any company who violates it. Now that the law has taken effect, there’s no legal basis for any kind of ‘extension’ of its effective date.”

Cotton and Ricketts said TikTok should only come back online by “severing all ties between TikTok and Communist China. Only then will Americans be protected from the grave threat posed to their privacy and security by a communist-controlled TikTok.”

The app’s brief blackout marked the realization of a yearslong effort to block US access to TikTok over national security concerns related to its China-based owner ByteDance. Outgoing President Joe Biden signed a law last April that gave ByteDance 270 days to sell TikTok to an owner from the United States or one of its allies or face a ban.

So even if Trump pledges to reverse the ban, he can’t simply undo a law passed by Congress and signed by a president with an executive order.

That’s why TikTok shut down in the first place. Despite the Biden administration all but saying they would defer enforcement to the incoming Trump administration, a person close to TikTok says “multiple critical service providers” indicated to TikTok that they were concerned that the ban might be enforced starting Sunday.

For example, Apple released a statement Sunday that cited the ban as its reason for removing TikTok from its app store. It noted the app will remain available for customers who already downloaded it, but it won’t be able to be redownloaded if deleted.

“Apple is obligated to follow the laws in the jurisdictions where it operates,” the company said in its statement. “Pursuant to the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, apps developed by ByteDance Ltd. and its subsidiaries — including TikTok, CapCut, Lemon8, and others — will no longer be available for download or updates on the App Store for users in the United States starting January 19, 2025.”

The long-term fix

The only truly permanent solutions to keep TikTok online appear to be: 1) pass a new law reversing the old one — no easy task, considering that the existing bill had such broad bipartisan support in Congress — or 2) force a sale to an acceptable buyer.

Two potential buyers — a group led by billionaire Frank McCourt and “Shark Tank’s” Kevin O’Leary, as well as AI search engine PerplexityAI — have submitted formal bids for the app and others have reportedly shown interest in TikTok.

ByteDance, however, has long been adamant that it has no intention of selling. TikTok’s near-magical algorithm, keeping users hooked on the app, is its secret power, and putting a price tag on such a valuable commodity, envied by every other social media app, is difficult.

McCourt’s buyer group has said it would buy TikTok’s US assets without the algorithm and rebuild the app, but tech giants like Meta and YouTube have for years worked to replicate TikTok’s popular algorithm without quite succeeding. O’Leary told CNN he met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago earlier this month to discuss the outlook for the app.

Spinning off an American-only version of TikTok could also mean the rest of the world has to download a new app to access US users’ content. Yet Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal reported last week that China is weighing a sale — to Elon Musk.

Musk may have the resources to buy the app, and he’s a major Trump supporter and about to take a quasi-role in his government. But it’s unclear that he would want to, and he has not publicly commented directly on the acquisition reports.

On Sunday, Musk posted on X that he opposes the TikTok ban “because it goes against freedom of speech.”

“That said, the current situation where TikTok is allowed to operate in America, but X is not allowed to operate in China is unbalanced. Something needs to change,” Musk said.

If ByteDance chooses to engage, Trump could perhaps argue that significant progress has been made on a deal — a legal threshold that would legally permit Trump to reverse the ban to allow the sale process to commence.

In his Truth Social post Sunday, Trump said the United States should have “a 50% ownership position in a joint venture.”

“By doing this, we save TikTok, keep it in good hands and allow it to say (sic) up,” he said. “Therefore, my initial thought is a joint venture between the current owners and/or new owners whereby the U.S. gets a 50% ownership in a joint venture set up between the U.S. and whichever purchase we so choose.”

That’s only a temporary measure, though, as the sale would ultimately need to go through. Until then, TikTok’s future will remain very much in doubt.

A ‘surreal’ shutdown

Many TikTok users had held onto hope that the shutdown would be short-lived.

Still, the Saturday night shutdown was a sad loss for some users — a reminder of the app’s cultural influence. Many users joined the app in early 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic was otherwise isolating them from community and other creative outlets.

“I’m so sad for so many people. I was shocked. I think I was probably in denial a little bit that it would actually just go dark,” influencer Shannon Lange told CNN early Sunday, before access to the app was restored.

Influencer Alix Earle, who had nearly 8 million TikTok followers, posted a tearful video on the platform ahead of the shutdown saying, “I feel like I’m going through heartbreak. This platform is more than an app or a job to me. I have so many memories on here. I have posted every day for the past 6 years of my life.”

Julie Turkel, a TikTok creator who said she was scrolling the app when it stopped working Saturday night, called the shutdown “surreal.”

“It was just surreal, it did have a very eerie feeling,” Turkel told CNN. She added that although she had anticipated the shutdown after TikTok’s warnings last week, “seeing it actually go down is different.”

Turkel told CNN early Sunday she was taking a digital “detox,” opting not to spend time on Instagram or other short-form video platforms, while TikTok was down. The break didn’t last long.

Amid conversations about the vetting of ministerial nominees by President John Dramani Mahama, a video of him and immediate past president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, having an encounter at the vetting of then-President John Agyekum Kufuor’s ministerial nominees has resurfaced.

The video, which is making the rounds on social media, captures John Mahama, who was then a Member of Parliament for Bole, questioning then Attorney General and Minister of Justice-designate, Nana Akufo-Addo, over plans by the new Kufuor government to probe some major happenings in the country during the era of the Provisional National Defence Council led by Jerry John Rawlings.

John Mahama, who was a member of the Appointments Committee of Parliament, intended to know how the NPP government planned to implement its plans and whether it was going to make use of existing public institutions or create new ones.

“He said that the majority was going to introduce a motion to set up a peace and justice commission to probe into June 4 and December 31. There was an uproar, and you were shown clearly walking out of the house in opposition. I want to be clear in my mind if you were opposed to the timing or the idea of what was being said,” he said.

Nana Akufo-Addo clarified that it was important for the country to have dispassionate discussions about the excesses of the June 4, 1979 coup and find ways of compensating the victims of the excesses of the revolution.

He, however, believed that state institutions like the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) had the legal backing to execute the task.

“My own view is that at some stage you have to come to grips with that era and its consequences. We have to do it in a way that the peace and justice of this country is not jeopardized. We are required as a country to decide how we deal with our past. The nation is ready to say let bygones be bygones, but there is still the situation involving the victims. People’s suffering cannot be alleviated just by words.

“What I believe in is that let us have some kind of mechanism working not with discretion but dealing with the matters in an objective way. I’m not sure there is any need for any particular body because there are institutions in place like CHRAJ which can perform these functions for those who believe they deserve some compensation. My preference is that wherever there are existing institutions that can deal with the problems, let those institutions be strengthened to deal with the problems,” Nana Akufo-Addo said.

Both Nana Akufo-Addo and John Mahama have since gone on to serve as presidents of Ghana, with Akufo-Addo serving two terms.

Mahama, on the other hand, is in the first month of his second term as president.

Help me solve economic challenges – Mahama to Asantehene

0

President John Dramani Mahama has appealed to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to leverage his influence in supporting efforts to address Ghana’s economic challenges.

During a visit to the Manhyia Palace, President Mahama praised the Asantehene for his pivotal role in fostering economic growth during his previous administration.

He reaffirmed his commitment to advancing development in the Ashanti Region, pledging to complete stalled and abandoned infrastructure projects, particularly in the healthcare sector.

Speaking at the first Akwasidae celebration at the Manhyia Palace on January 19, Mahama said, “Our nation Ghana is facing a dire economic crisis, while this is not the first time we have been in such a crisis. This particular crisis is characterised by a high rate of inflation, macroeconomic instability, a depreciating currency, and a debt default which has shut us out of the international credit market.

“It’s a more daunting challenge than we have ever experienced in our history. Your Royal  Majesty, as a former president between 2013 and 2017, we faced macroeconomic instability and I remember some of the times we had obstacles in our way of bringing stability to our economy and restoring economic growth.

“I had the privilege of calling on you to use your influence and diplomacy to smoothen the path so that it could open up the path towards prosperity and progress and anytime I called on you, you didn’t hesitate. And I would like to thank you for your cooperation I enjoyed with you at that time.

“As we have inherited a difficult economic situation, I will be calling on you again from time to time. And I know that anytime I call on you, you will not hesitate so that we work together to put our nation back on its feet.”

On his part, Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, urged President Mahama to fulfil all promises made to Ghanaians.

The paramount Chief of Mampong Traditional Area, Dasebre Osei Bonsu II, spoke on behalf of the Asantehene, stating, “We would like you to please remember always the undertakings and promises you have made. I implore you to fulfil all your promises to us in the great Asante Kingdom.

“We have absolute trust in you that you shall not let us down. All ongoing developmental projects within the kingdom and across all kingdoms, you will fulfil them.”

In an interview with the Punch, the widow said the gruesome murder of Salome still feels like a bad dream, adding that it has been extremely difficult for her.

“I felt like my world had ended. It’s a painful experience, and it still feels like a bad dream. People tried to console me, saying I have other children, but no one should go through something like this. It has been extremely difficult. What I want is justice for her. I am currently very ill.”

Ojomachenwu demanded justice for her slain daughter, who was a corps member serving in Abuja.

On the gospel singer’s claim that Salome was his girlfriend, Ojomachenwu described it as a lie. According to the bereaved woman, the suspect did not even know her name.

She added that her deceased daughter was seeing someone else, and they had a plan for her wedding to the pharmacist she was dating before her murder. In her words:

“That’s a lie. Salome was not his girlfriend. He didn’t even know her name. You can see in the video that the killer has a beard. My children don’t like men who keep beards, and Salome had no relationship with him.

“She already had someone she was dating; a pharmacist. I told her we would do the necessary wedding introduction after her service year.”

Ghana seeks investors for wind, tidal wave energy

0

Investors needed to grow Ghana's renewable energy portfolio Investors needed to grow Ghana’s renewable energy portfolio

Ghana is seeking investors for wind and tidal wave energy potential to increase its renewable portfolio.

That will also increase the country’s total installed capacity to the national grid, serve more unserved communities, reduce greenhouse gasses in the energy sector, and honour international commitments.

Mr Wisdom Ahiataku-Togobo, the Director at AT Consult, a sustainable Energy Consulting firm disclosed to the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of the 15th session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi.

Under the theme, “Accelerating the Renewable Energy Transition – The Way Forward,” the two-day meeting brought together ministers and high-level delegates from IRENA’s 139 Member States, academia, development banks, chief executives and youth, to enhance wider, cross-sectoral collaboration on the energy transition.

Mr Ahiataku-Togobo hinted that studies on wind energy potential had been conducted at 13 areas of which results showed that the wind speeds ranged from good to moderate along the coast from Tema to Aflao.

“The necessary wind speed measurements have been done, and locations where the wind speeds can easily be installed to give moderate to good power have been identified. It is now open for prospective investors to come and invest.”

“From the coast of Tema down to Aflao, the land is very plain, and there are no big tall trees, and no mountains on the way. So those were the areas that were found to have moderate to good wind speed and easy access for the installation of utility-scale wind power plants,” he added.

The necessary policy instruments, Mr Ahiataku-Togobo said, had been put in place to attract investors in the sector.

Mr Ahiataku-Togobo who is the immediate past Director of Renewable Energy at the Ministry of Energy and the Bui Power Authority stated that significant progress had also been made in the area of wave energy and that it would be included in the country’s energy mix in the immediate future.

“Wave energy potential was found around Ada through Anloga and Keta. It is not surprising because that section of the sea has strong waves and it is difficult for fishermen to go there for expedition,” he said.

“Indeed, there was a test wave energy plant installed and within three days the wave was so strong that it shattered the whole thing. The team of engineers are remodelling a more robust plant, which is almost done for testing.”

Mr Ahiataku-Togobo expressed the hope that the country by the close of the year (2025) would have the first five megawatt wave system in place.

In the sub-region, he said the country had done creditably well in the area of renewable energy explaining that 30 per cent of its energy was generated by Akosombo and Bui hydro dams while plans were in place to increase it by 10 per cent in the next five years.

Ghana’s total GreenHouse Gas (GHG) emissions recorded a three-fold increase, from 1990 to 2022, driven largely by energy sector growth, the latest Ghana’s Sixth National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report by the Environmental Protection Agency has revealed.

Energy is dominated by fuel combustion; the sector’s emissions surged ninefold from 1990 to 2022.

In the same period, stationary combustion significantly increased by 847.0 per cent.

Both energy sources were driven by increased vehicle numbers and a shift from fuel oil to natural gas in electricity generation.

Similarly, GHG emissions from oil and gas also significantly increased due to the increased expansion of the industry (production and development) since commercialisation in 2012.

Since 2012, the emissions have risen by 498.9 per cent relative to the 2022 levels.

Mr Ahiataku-Togobo and other energy experts with deep insight in the sector told GNA that they were of the strong view that policy directions to increase renewable energy projects, the inclusion of nuclear power as the energy baseload would reduce emissions in the sector.

He said that increasing access to cheap power, would support Ghana’s planned transition from fossil fuel-powered vehicles to the use of electronic vehicles and encourage electric cooking.

“That will also mean reducing the poor air quality causing public health concerns and economic burden on people and the country,” he said.

Kwame Poku bags brace as Kotoko ease to big win over Vision FC, Samartex draw with Hearts of Oak

0

Asante Kotoko climbed to third place on the league table as Prosper Narteh Ogum’s side cruised to a stunning 4-1 victory at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium over Vision FC.

Kotoko controlling affairs virtually from the start and took an early lead courtesy Kwame Poku’s 7th strike.

However, Vision FC were soon level, as Nana Yaw Osei scored to make it 1-1 during the 22nd minute.

Yet Kotoko remained largely on top in a pulsating first half and moved back in front nine minutes later through Peter Amidu Acquah.

Kwame Poku had been a menace throughout, and got his second goal, making 3-1 on the 37th minute for the Porcupine Warriors.

With Kotoko showing no mercy, Dauda Saaka then added the final goal just a minute before halftime.

In the second half, Asante Kotoko maintained their top performance but failed to make their threat count as the game ended with the first half scoreline.

Prosper Ogum’s side, now two points behind leaders Gold Stars and can go top with victory over Karela United on week 18 while Vision FC must somehow pull out of a slump that has seen them go 8 away league games without a win at a crucial stage of the season.

Elsewhere, Hearts of Oak were unable to break their winless run against Samartex. The Phobians were held to a goalless draw at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena.

They now find themselves 6th on the league table with 29 points from 17 games.

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been celebrated not only for his political leadership but also for the remarkable health and resilience he demonstrated during his eight years in office during a thanksgiving mass held in his honor at the Accra Ridge Church on 18 January 2025.

Rt. Rev Dr. Daniel Sylvanus Mensah Torto, the Anglican Bishop of Accra, offered a reflection on Akufo-Addo’s tenure, highlighting his good health and the protection he had experienced despite the immense pressures of his high-profile role.

“Despite traveling in vehicles and racing at top speed, he has not been in an accident. Despite all the challenges that can come with working in such a high-profile and stressful office, we have never heard that he has been admitted to the hospital,” Bishop Mensah Torto shared with the congregation, attributing this to the divine protection that had been bestowed upon the former president.

The Bishop continued, tying the former president’s experiences to a verse from the Bible, Lamentations 3:22, which says: “Because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed. For his compassions never fail; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

According to Bishop Mensah Torto, these words exemplify the unwavering grace that had accompanied Akufo-Addo throughout his presidency.

“God has been good to His Excellency and to his family,” he concluded, emphasizing that divine faithfulness had sustained the former president through his demanding time in office.

In addition to celebrating Akufo-Addo’s health and safety, Bishop Mensah Torto presented a citation to the former president.

The citation acknowledged the significant achievements of his administration, particularly in the areas of education, economic development, industrialization, and his unwavering commitment to democratic principles.

One of the standout initiatives, that has had a lasting impact on Ghana’s youth, was the implementation of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, which made secondary education more accessible to a wider population.

Moreover, the citation highlighted Akufo-Addo’s contributions to the Anglican Church in Ghana, recognizing his support for religious institutions during his time in office.

His work was seen as a testament to his belief in the importance of education, the economy, and the nurturing of spiritual and social values.

NPP Ashanti Regional communications director begs Rev. Owusu Bempah for forgiveness [Listen]

0

The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, Paul Yando, has apologized to the Founder and Leader of Glorious Word Power Ministries International, Rev. Owusu Bempah, for any offense the party may have caused him.

In an interview with Addai Munumkum on Adom FM’s Sunday afternoon news, he stated that the party had wronged the renowned man of God in many ways.

He further explained that Rev. Owusu Bempah turning against the NPP had a significant impact on their performance in the 2024 elections.

“He was with us in 2016 and 2020, but the party failed to support him when he was arrested by the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akufo-Dampare. This made the man of God turn against us, and now we have seen the consequences,” he said.

Paul Yando also mentioned that they did not take Rev. Owusu Bempah’s prophecies about the 2024 election seriously, dismissing them as jokes. However, those prophecies eventually came to pass.

“Let me quote his words: ‘We will lose the election, and our defeat will be massive, beyond comprehension.’ And indeed, we lost heavily, beyond imagination,” he said.

The Ashanti Regional Communications Director reiterated his apology, asking Rev. Owusu Bempah to forgive the party and expressed their readiness to reconcile.

He further explained that in every institution, there are pastors, contractors, and financiers who contribute to the direction of the organization. However, the party failed to honor someone who stood by them in 2016 and 2020, and now they are paying the price.

“Rev. Owusu Bempah is a true NPP member. As the African proverb says, ‘If you wrong someone, you apologize and seek reconciliation.’ Rev., I am begging you to forgive us and come back to us. We are deeply sorry,” he concluded.
