Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, is set to replace Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as the Majority Leader of the 9th Parliament.
This change follows Dr. Forson’s nomination by President John Dramani Mahama as the Minister of Finance-designate.
Mr. Ayariga’s appointment as Majority Leader has gained widespread attention, with many emphasizing his deep understanding of parliamentary rules and procedures.
As a lawyer and veteran lawmaker, he brings extensive experience and leadership to this critical role.
Having previously served as Minister of Information and Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Mr. Ayariga’s track record of public service further cements his suitability for this position.
His appointment is seen by some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as a strategic move to maintain stability and effectiveness in parliamentary leadership.
Dr. Ato Forson’s new role as Minister of Finance-designate leaves a significant gap in the Majority Leader position.
Ayariga’s elevation is expected to ensure continuity and strong leadership within the government’s legislative agenda.
In addition to this development, other vacancies have emerged within the Majority bench leadership.
Governs Kwame Agbodza, currently serving as the Majority Chief Whip, has been nominated as the Minister of Roads and Highways-designate.
Similarly, Ahmed Ibrahim, the Majority Deputy Whip, has been nominated as the Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs.
These changes reflect President Mahama’s efforts to realign his administration to address pressing national challenges while maintaining a strong and cohesive parliamentary team.
The nominees will now await parliamentary vetting and approval before officially assuming their new roles.

You should apologize to Ghanaians for misleading us with your campaign to us to vote for President Mahama and his NDC.
I have read a story attributed to you on myjoyonline that you have stated that the new government will not be able to fulfil its promises to Ghanaians under the current International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme that the country is committed to.
President of the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA), Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko, has urged the government to intervene due to the association’s funding issues.
Despite attempts to gain private sponsorship, GUSA has not succeeded.
GUSA is pivotal in promoting sports in higher education, managing events like the annual GUSA Games, and developing athletes for national and international levels.
The current GUSA Games are being hosted by the University of Cape Coast, concluding on January 18, 2025.
In an interview with Asempa FM, Tanko explained that GUSA’s main funding comes from membership fees from universities nationwide.
The lack of external sponsorship has restricted the association’s ability to grow its initiatives and improve sports at universities in Ghana.
“Our funding comes from universities. Each university contributes dues to GUSA.
” We lack sponsors. We’ve been seeking sponsors for a long time without success,” Tanko stated.
He compared Ghana’s situation to that of Kenya and Uganda, where government bodies significantly support university sports.
“We require government intervention. In countries like Kenya and Uganda, government institutions provide sponsorship,” Tanko stressed.
This plea from GUSA underscores the urgent need for more investment in sports facilities and development at both grassroots and tertiary levels to keep Ghana competitive internationally.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahama Ayariga has been named Majority Leader.
His appoint follows the nomination of Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as Finance Minister-designate.
Dr. Cassiel Forson was vetted by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday and is highly likely to be approved as a minister, prompting the minority to nominate Mahama Ayariga and further confirm him as Majority Leader.
Mahama Ayariga, a seasoned politician and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been appointed as the new Majority Leader in Ghana’s 9th Parliament.
This development comes after President John Dramani Mahama nominated Cassiel Ato Forson, MP for Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam, as Minister of Finance-designate.
Mahama Ayariga’s elevation to the position of Majority Leader was predicted by Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, who cited Ato Forson’s expected transition to the executive arm of government.
As part of the leadership reshuffle, Kweku George Ricketts-Hagan, MP for Cape Coast South, will assume the role of Deputy Majority Leader, succeeding Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah.
In addition to Mahama Ayariga’s appointment, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, MP for South Dayi, has been designated as the Majority Chief Whip, taking over from Kwame Governs Agbodza.
Sammi Awuku, former National Lottery Authority (NLA) Director-General and current MP for Akuapem North, has expressed his excitement and endorsement of the government’s plan to abolish the betting tax.
In an interview with Daily Guide Network (DGN), Awuku stated, “I’m excited that the betting tax is going to be scrapped… I’ve been consistent about it, even during the NPP era, and I said it is something that personally has not worked in many of the jurisdictions anytime you have introduced taxes on betting.”
Sammi Awuku, a vocal critic of the tax, emphasized its counterproductive nature, particularly concerning government-owned institutions like the National Lottery Authority (NLA).
“Lottery was part of the betting tax. The National Lottery Authority, for instance, is owned by the government, and apart from the things that they do, at the end of the day, they must also contribute to the national kitty,” he explained.
He further highlighted the dilemma posed by the tax, which made illegal betting operators more attractive to players. “If the government is taxing itself, then what will happen is that the underground operators that we call the illegal operators, they will become emboldened. If you play with the government, you attract a 10% tax on what you win. But if you play with the illegals, you get your full money. So, I told them that, for me, it was counterproductive,” Awuku noted.
Additionally, Awuku criticized the inconsistencies within the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government. “The difficulty with the NDC position is that earlier the Finance Minister-designate, in time past, had said that it should be banned—not just the tax being scrapped,” he pointed out.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has initiated interviews for candidates seeking appointments as Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Ashanti Region, as part of its efforts to ensure effective leadership at the local governance level.
The three-day exercise aims to assess the competencies and visions of aspirants for the leadership roles across the region’s 43 metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies (MMDAs).
Black Stars winger Ernest Nuamah is reportedly set to leave Olympique Lyon after attracting interest from Premier League clubs.
The Ghanaian has drawn attention from Everton, who are looking to secure his signature during the ongoing winter transfer window.
Sky Sports reports that the move, which was initially close to completion, has stalled due to managerial changes at Everton.
Meanwhile, other French sources claim that Everton have yet to make an official bid, with Lyon setting a price tag of £20-25 million.
Ernest Nuamah has been on Everton’s radar since last summer when the Toffees competed with Fulham to sign the 21-year-old.
Additionally, Lyon owner John Textor, who was initially open to letting the Ghanaian leave, is now reconsidering his stance.

Chairman Nana Boakye Yiadom, other celebrities addressing the press
Members of the Celebrities for NDC group have called on President John Dramani Mahama to fulfil his manifesto promise to construct a movie theatre as part of efforts to support and revive Ghana’s struggling film industry.
At a press conference held in Kumasi, the group expressed gratitude to NDC executives for their support during the 2024 election campaign and voiced optimism about the government’s commitment to its pledge.
Nana Boakye Yiadom, the group’s Chairman, emphasized the critical need for infrastructure to boost the local film industry.
“The promised movie theatre is essential for revitalizing the industry and providing a platform for Ghanaian filmmakers to showcase their work,” he stated.
In addition, the group appealed to President Mahama to consider banning the broadcasting of telenovelas on local television, arguing that such programmes have negatively impacted the Ghanaian film sector.
“The dominance of telenovelas has diminished local content creation and affected the livelihoods of many in the industry,” Yiadom added.

play videoKwesi Nyantakyi, former President of the GFA
The Vice President of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), John Ansah, has credited former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi for paving the way for Ghanaian football to gain recognition from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
This week, reports confirmed that the current GFA President, Kurt Okraku, has filed his nomination to contest for a position on the CAF Executive Committee in the elections scheduled for March 2025.
Ansah believes this opportunity is largely due to the groundwork laid by Nyantakyi.
In an interview with Happy FM, Ansah praised Nyantakyi for being a trailblazer in ensuring CAF’s engagement with Ghanaian football.
“Kwesi Nyantakyi paved the way, and that got CAF to monitor football proceedings within the country. So, whenever you perform well and your zone acknowledges your efforts, you’ll be rewarded. This wouldn’t just be a plus for the president but for the country as a whole,” Ansah stated.
Reports indicate that with Djibril Hamidou, President of the Niger Football Association and current WAFU Zone B representative on the CAF Executive Committee, contesting for a position on the FIFA Council, Kurt Okraku is expected to run unopposed for the CAF EXCO seat.
Reality stars Yandy and Mendeecees Harris got their Ghanaian citizenship in Jan 2025
Since the launch of Ghana’s “Year of Return” program in 2019, hundreds of African Americans have visited the country to experience the history, culture and tradition upfront.
The Year of Return is an initiative by the government of Ghana to mark 400 years since the first black slaves landed in Jamestown, Virginia.
The initiative saw an array of celebrities across the globe make their way into Ghana to explore, learn and appreciate their roots, as well as, unite with Africans on the continent. Steve Harvey, Nicole Ari Parker, Diggy Simmons, and Micheal Jai White, and Bozoma Saint John were among a host of celebrities who spent some time in Ghana following the launch of the initiative in 2019.
As part of the yearlong “Year of Return” celebrations, then-president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, granted citizenship to 126 diasporans who had been residing in the West African nation for years.
Last two months, before leaving office, Ghana’s President Akufo-Addo granted citizenship to 524 diaspora members, mostly Black Americans. Reality stars Yandy and Mendeecees Harris and activist Dr. Umar Johnson were also granted Ghanaian citizenship recently.
The November group was the largest one granted citizenship at one time since Ghana launched the “Year of the Return” program, the Associated Press reported. Ghana extended the program into “Beyond the Return” to continue its engagement with the diaspora community.
During the historic swearing-in ceremony, Akufo-Addo urged the new citizens “to bring their experiences and expertise to help develop Ghana, making it a better place for all.”
In the year 2000, Ghana became the first African country to officially open its doors to people of African descent from all over the world.
The West African country passed the “Right of Abode” law which allows any person of African descent to apply and be granted the right to stay in Ghana indefinitely.
This was followed by the launch of the Diaspora Affairs Bureau under the foreign affairs ministry in 2014 to manage the migration and engage the diaspora to provide a sustainable link with various government agencies to achieve development and investment goals.
According to government figures, at least 1,500 African Americans have moved to Ghana since 2019. That year, the West African country’s economy generated a total of $1.9 billion through activities related to the “Year of Return.”
Some of the activities that contributed to this figure included air travel, hotel accommodation, transport fares, as well as other key entertainment events.
Keachia Bowers, who is among the 524 African diasporans granted Ghanaian citizenship, relocated to Ghana from Florida in 2023 with her family. She told AP that getting citizenship is more than just living in Ghana.
“I didn’t need (citizenship) to tell me that I’m African. Anywhere that I go in the world and someone looks at me, I’m melanated,” she said.
“But my ancestors who wanted to return and come back home, those ancestors who never made it back,” she said, “that passport, for me, is for them.”
In a post shared on social media, Miracle Adomah, the wife of journalist Kofi Adomah, provided a crucial update regarding his condition after he was tragically shot in the eye by unknown assailants.
Expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support from well-wishers, she wrote, “Sorry I can’t respond to the numerous WhatsApp calls on my phone and that of my husband right now.

In accordance with the government work report that the governor of Guangdong province delivered at the Third Session of the 14th Guangdong Provincial People’s Congress on January 15, 2025 the province’s GDP was estimated to surpass 14 trillion yuanin 2024, ranking first in China for 36 consecutive years, and its total imports and exports increased by 9.8% year-on-year to exceed 9 trillion yuan, both hitting a new record.
In 2024, the two sessions of Canton Fair in spring and autumn attracted about 500,000 overseas purchasers, a record high. Guangzhou and Shenzhen were selected as pilot cities to allow the establishment of wholly foreign-owned hospitals.
Amazon Global Selling opened its first innovation center for the Asia-Pacific region in Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone, Shenzhen, aiming to help more Chinese e-commerce enterprises go global.
Thanks to the strong industrial development of the province, especially manufacturing, “Made in Guangdong” stood out in the global market. As the domestic real estate sector went through an in-depth adjustment, Guangdong’s manufacturing industry still maintained steady growth, effectively filling the economic gap caused by the former, and further consolidating the foundation of real economy.
In 2024, the added value of industrial enterprises above the designated size in Guangdong increased by 4.2% YoY, and the industrial sector contributed about 50% of the province’s GDP growth.
In Guangdong, industry and technology are reinforcing each other, and new quality productive forces are springing up with great vitality. The province’s research and development investment intensity is about 3.6%, and it is home to about 77,000 high-tech enterprises, and six national manufacturing innovation centers. Guangdong has ranked first nationwide for eight consecutive years in terms of comprehensive capacity of regional innovation, and the Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou science and technology cluster has ranked second worldwide for five consecutive years.
At present, Guangdong’s economic aggregate accounts for about one tenth of the national total, and its industrial scale accounts for about one eighth of the national total. The 4.2% YoY increase in the added value of industrial enterprises above the designated size in Guangdong has provided strong support for the stability of the industrial foundation of the country.
In 2024, one out of every four new energy vehicles, 2.2 out of every five industrial robots and two out of every five smartphones produced in China came from Guangdong. The scale of Guangdong’s foreign trade accounted for more than one fifth of the country’s total, contributing nearly 40% of the country’s foreign trade growth.
The province’s local general public budget revenue reached 1.35 trillion yuan, ranking first nationwide for 34 consecutive years. The central-level tax revenue from Guangdong was the most in the country. A total of 1.43 million new jobs were created in urban areas in Guangdong, exceeding the annual target of 1.1 million set by the central government, and 43.86 million workers from outside the province maintained stable employment. Moreover, Guangdong continued to cultivate and expand industries with distinctive characteristics and advantages at county level, and 15 main platforms undertook about 700 new industrial transfer projects with a total investment of about 300 billion yuan.
In 2024, 54 Greater Bay Area (GBA) Standards were released, and 187 cross-boundary administrative services that are frequently needed were launched. The Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link and the Huangmaohai Sea-Crossing Passage opened to traffic. And 4.5 million vehicles entered Guangdong via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Port.
Guangdong, ranking first nationwide for 36 consecutive years in terms of GDP, is expected to make more achievements in the future.
Kwamena Duncan is a former Central Regional Minister
A former Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama over his appointments.
Duncan expressed his strong disapproval of the appointments made by Mahama so far, suggesting that they may lack seriousness.
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on January 15, 2025, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leading member expressed concern over the appointments being made in smaller batches instead of all at once, suggesting that this approach may be unacceptable.
“… A certain indicator of seriousness is missing. I don’t see any seriousness in these types of appointments where they release appointments in smaller bits,” he said.
The outspoken politician recalled the tenure of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, noting that he had made nearly all of his ministerial appointments within a few months of being sworn in.
He emphasised how Akufo-Addo aimed to have his appointments approved quickly, enabling appointees to take on their roles and start their duties without delay.
“The president (Akufo-Addo) wanted us to be approved quickly for us to take charge and ensure things begin to move accordingly,” he said.
Duncan also pointed out that Akufo-Addo made his regional ministerial appointments later after the majority of his cabinet ministers had already been appointed.
“My appointment was done in February (2017) and at the time, Accra ministerial (appointments) had been dealt with, virtually done before our appointments as the regional ministers came,” he continued.
While commending Mahama for taking the initiative to make his regional appointments even though he hadn’t finished nominating his cabinet appointees, Duncan criticised him for repeating the same ‘tot-tot’ approach for his regional appointees.
He, therefore, urged Mahama to expedite the appointment process, noting the limited time of the NDC government.
“… He [Mahama] has gone to the regions, that’s not bad. It is good but even that one he is doing is a ‘tot-tot’ appointment. Even if he had been an 8-year-bound president, we would have recommended he go faster than this, let alone 4 years,” he added.
His comments come after President Mahama released his first set of regional ministerial nominees for 10 out of the 16 regions in the country.

The Super Eagles B team secured a historic 3-1 aggregate win over the Black Galaxies of Ghana to qualify for the African Nations Championship after a six-year absence.
Following a goalless first-leg draw in Accra, the Nigerian team delivered a commanding performance in Uyo, claiming a 3-1 victory that also put to rest years of heartbreak inflicted by their West African rivals.
Ghana had previously denied Nigeria CHAN qualification in 2008 and 2022. However, this time, the Super Eagles B team was determined to change the narrative.
Speaking after the match, head coach Daniel Ogunmodede revealed how his team overcame the psychological hurdle of Ghana’s historical dominance.
“We studied Ghana and there was nothing we found about them other than history like I said before the match,” Ogunmodede said. “
There strength is history so we tried to blindfold ourselves from that.
We were determined to break the yoke. We wanted to go to Chan, and here we are.”
The coach also shared a motivational moment with his players that inspired their attacking display.
“I told the boys someone said we don’t score goals. That became part of our motivation, and we proved them wrong,” he added.
This qualification marks a return to the CHAN tournament for Nigeria, who last participated in 2018, finishing as runners-up after losing to Morocco in the final.
The 2024 CHAN tournament, to be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, presents another chance for Nigeria to chase their first-ever title.

The former Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, has pointed out that the company’s main challenge lies with forex rates and the depreciation of the cedi.
According to him, since ECG purchases electricity in dollars and sells it in cedis, there is a mismatch between costs and profits, leading to deficits.
“The first one is forex… you buy the electricity in dollars and you come to sell it in cedis. Then you have to find the necessary dollars to pay. If you’re looking for USD to pay the Independent Power Producers (IPPs), will the money be enough to cover the whole value chain?”
His comments were quoted by citinewsroom.com.
Dubik Mahama’s remarks come amid discussions about the current government’s decision to privatise ECG.
He acknowledged that despite the inefficiencies within the company, some improvements have been made in recent years that should not be overlooked.
He argued that private sector participation already exists within ECG, and further privatisation may not be necessary.
“I do admit that there are a few inefficiencies in the company, but likewise, there are some efficiencies. Now, before you proceed with privatisation, what are the benchmarks? Let’s not forget that there is already private sector participation in ECG,” he said.
He further explained that, “At the metering point under the loss reduction program, ECG has moved from its previous position where it used to look for large sums of money to purchase meters. That was one thing I decided to change when I became the Managing Director. I discussed with the board, and we concluded that looking for capital to purchase meters didn’t make sense.”
He also suggested, “Why don’t we bring in all these metering companies and encourage them to establish factories in the country? Based on that, we now have about seven metering companies with factories in Ghana. What we then did was assign them localities to install their meters. That is private sector participation, and if you do the math, you’ll see that it saved us a lot—almost 50% in borrowing costs and administrative expenses.”

16-year-old goalkeeper Edson Lopes has tragically passed away after saving a penalty during a community game in Brazil.
According to The Sun, Edson saved the penalty with his chest and subsequently suffered a severe injury, leading to him being rushed to the hospital.
The report indicated that he was transported from Maués, a remote area in the Amazon rainforest, to a hospital—a journey that took 11 hours before they arrived at the medical centre.
Unfortunately, Edson succumbed to his injuries upon arrival and was pronounced dead on January 5, 2025.
In a social media post, his brother Eliomar paid tribute to the young goalkeeper.
“Today, you touched all of Brazil. You were a dedicated player and a joyful child. My brother, you left us while doing what you loved most—playing football.”
Ghanaian media personality, MzGee, has become the subject of both admiration and criticism after sharing photos of her baby bump online.
While many fans have celebrated her courage and joy, some trolls have questioned her decision to post such personal moments. They lambasted her for showing off her belly on social media without caring about the spiritual implications it will have on her child.
What many people failed to see was how the host of United Showbiz show on UTV spent several years yearning for the fruit of the womb, a struggle that left her vulnerable to mockery and harsh criticism from various quarters.
She has on several occasions disclosed how she was mocked for being childless despite being a married woman. In the typical Ghanaian society, people start watching the wombs of a woman as soon as she gets married. This was the case of MzGee.
However, despite the pain, MzGee remained steadfast, leaning on her faith and inner strength to navigate the challenging journey. After she was blessed with the fruit of the womb, as is often the case in the public eye, not everyone shared in her joy. Criticisms flooded her social media platforms, with some accusing her of oversharing and others implying she was seeking attention. Yet, her defenders were quick to counter these attacks.
“She went through so much to get here. If showing her baby bump makes her happy, let her do it,” one fan wrote. Another added, “People mocked her and called her names when she was struggling. Now that she’s celebrating, they want her to stay silent. Hypocrisy at its finest!”
The Police have arrested three suspects in connection with the alleged smuggling of cocoa beans to neighbouring countries, specifically, Togo or Burkina Faso, the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has confirmed.
The suspects include one of the drivers and two driver-mates of the three heavy-duty trucks which were carrying the 1,473 maxi bags of cocoa beans covered with lumber.
The suspects had since been granted bail, assisting in police investigations. Two other suspects (drivers) involved in the crime are on the run.
The Anti-Smuggling Task Force of the COCOBOD intercepted the trucks with registration numbers GR 7237-21, GR-314-24, and AS 5278-23 at Nkrankwanta in the Dormaa West District of the region.
Briefing the media in Sunyani, Michael P.K. Asumanu, the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regional Administrator of the COCOBOD, said the task force comprised the police, National Investigations Bureau, National Security and the COCOBOD.
He said the seized trucks had since been sent to the Bono Regional Police Headquarters in Sunyani for safekeeping, while the COCOBOD had taken custody of the cocoa beans since no one had claimed ownership of them.
Mr Asumanu said smuggling caused huge economic loss to the nation, because cocoa contributed hugely to the economy, and urged the public to support the fight against the smuggling of the beans, saying “We design rewards for informants.”
The Acting Bono Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission, Emmanuel Ntiako, later told the Ghana News Agency that the agency was also assessing the lumber.

The African Institute of Energy and Sustainability (AIES) has called for urgent reforms in Ghana’s energy sector, highlighting the need for transparency, sustainable policies, and political accountability to ensure reliable power supply.
In a recent report, the AIES stressed that while Ghana’s installed generation capacity of 5,492 MW exceeds the system’s peak demand of 3,848 MW (Energy Commission, 2024), persistent financial inefficiencies continue to undermine the sector’s stability.
The organization noted that Ghana’s energy sector debt reached $2.5 billion by the end of 2024, necessitating swift intervention to avert another power crisis akin to the 2013–2016 “dumsor” period.
The report criticized the politicization of energy challenges by successive governments and emphasized that “political rhetoric does not keep the lights on; proactive measures and strategic financial management do.”
Key Recommendations The AIES outlined several measures to address the sector’s inefficiencies and ensure sustainable energy governance: 1. Transparent Energy Accounting: Publish comprehensive and verifiable reports on energy sector finances. 2. Cost-Reflective Tariffs: Implement balanced tariff systems to ensure affordable rates for vulnerable consumers while allowing utilities to recover costs. 3. Decouple Distribution and Retail Functions: Separate the retail and distribution roles of ECG and NEDCo to improve efficiency. 4. Privatize the Retail Sector: Introduce performance-based contracts with private companies to reduce commercial losses. 5. Reform the Cash Waterfall Mechanism (CWM): Ensure timely and equitable disbursement of revenue at the point of purchase. 6. Invest in Renewable Energy: Accelerate the transition to solar, wind, and hydro energy by removing bureaucratic barriers. 7. Depoliticize Energy Management: Strengthen the independence of regulatory bodies to oversee the sector without political interference. 8. Foster Political Consensus: Organize a non-partisan energy summit to create a long-term roadmap for energy sustainability.
Conclusion
The AIES emphasized that the future of Ghana’s energy sector must not be held hostage by partisan politics. Instead, it called on the government to demonstrate the political will to address financial inefficiencies, prioritize renewable energy, and ensure transparency.
“Keeping the lights on is not a political favour; it is a fundamental right of every Ghanaian,” the report concluded.

L-R: former President Nana Akufo-Addo and President John Mahama at the Bawku Naba’s palace
President John Dramani Mahama is drawing praises from a section of the public for his visit to Bawku and Nalerigu as part of efforts to find a permanent solution to the Bawku chieftaincy crisis.
One picture from Mahama’s visit to the Bawku Naba’s palace is particularly earning him more admiration from the public.
The president was captured quietly sitting on a plastic chair as he was being addressed by the Bawku Naba, Naa Alhaji Seidu Abagre Kuluga.
This image stands in sharp contrast to the visuals from a similar visit by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who travelled to the Bawku Naba’s palace with his ‘special’ presidential chair.
Following Mahama’s visit, visuals of Akufo-Addo’s visit to the same location have also gone viral.
These visuals show former President Akufo-Addo addressing the Bawku Naba with his presidential chair, which was transported from Accra, positioned behind him.
It is worth noting that former President Akufo-Addo was heavily criticised for transporting the chair to every public event he attended in the country, with many pointing to the costs involved in its transportation.

A Ranking Member of the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Senator James E. Risch, has noted that Ghana owes American companies approximately $251 million.
He added that the repayment of these debts will significantly influence the future relationship between the two countries.
Senator Risch urged Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to leverage America’s position as the IMF’s largest shareholder to ensure the Fund compels Ghana to repay its debts to American entities.
In a letter addressed to Treasury Secretary Yellen, Senator Risch claimed that Ghana owes several U.S.-based businesses, including Twin City Energy (TCE), American Tower Company, GSM, Chubb, Kosmos Energy, and Zipline.
According to him, these debts place a severe financial burden on the companies and threaten their operations in Ghana.
“It is my understanding that the government of Ghana owes approximately $251 million in outstanding payments to American companies. These unpaid debts place substantial financial strain on U.S. businesses in Ghana and jeopardize their operations and investments,” Senator Risch wrote.
The letter was copied to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, U.S. Executive Director of the IMF Elizabeth Shortino, and DFC CEO Scott Nathan.
The Senator expressed concern that the IMF’s anticipated approval of a $3 billion Extended Credit Facility for Ghana does not account for these debts.
He believes this could set a harmful precedent for other sovereign borrowers and negatively impact U.S. companies operating abroad.
Two of the affected companies, Twin City Energy and Chubb, have investments backed by the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), which means Ghana’s arrears affect not only private businesses but also investments financed by U.S. taxpayers.
Senator Risch urged the Treasury Secretary to use the United States’ position as the IMF’s largest shareholder to condition U.S. support for further IMF assistance to Ghana on the country’s commitment to repaying its debts to American companies.
“I urge you to direct our executive director at the IMF to make clear that U.S. support for further IMF assistance to Ghana will depend on a good-faith effort to establish a concrete and enforceable repayment plan for the remaining outstanding arrears,” he stated.
He suggested that the proposed repayment plan include transparent auditing, reporting, and enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance.
He also recommended allocating portions of IMF disbursements specifically to clear debts owed to American companies.
Senator Risch cautioned that proceeding with IMF disbursements without addressing Ghana’s debt obligations could undermine constructive U.S. engagement with Ghana and deepen its reliance on international financial assistance.
“Allowing the next disbursement without addressing these concerns deepens Ghana’s reliance on international assistance while neglecting its obligations to U.S. private-sector partners,” he warned.
He urged the U.S. Treasury and its executive director at the IMF to treat the resolution of Ghana’s outstanding debts with urgency, emphasising that future U.S. support should be tied to responsible fiscal practices and fair treatment of American interests abroad.
Ghana is currently awaiting a third review from the IMF before receiving further disbursements.

Clement Apaak serves as a member of Parliament for Builsa South
Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, has assured the Ghanaian public that the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) remains committed to delivering its free tuition policy for first-year students in public tertiary institutions.
His comments follow claims made by the retired Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Nunoo Mensah.
A retired army officer who spoke during a stakeholder engagement at O’Reilly Senior High School noted that the initiative was unnecessary.
He asserted that the initiative would not be feasible.
But reacting to it in a media interview, the lawmaker will deliver on its campaign promises and any other policies promised to Ghanaians.
“John Dramani Mahama and the NDC campaigned vehemently, and if for nothing at all, the magnitude of the NDC’s victory in terms of parliamentary seats and the gap between our candidate, now President, and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President, should be a testament that this, among many other worthy and accepted policies, accounted for the overwhelming support we have received. So, we intend to proceed with the promise made by John Dramani Mahama and the NDC to support students in tertiary institutions with their fees,” he stated.
“That is an opinion. In any case, it is not going to be by compulsion. If there are persons who feel that they don’t need it and would not want to be beneficiaries of this arrangement, they are free to opt-out. But as far as this is a manifesto promise made by John Mahama and the NDC to the people of Ghana, based on which we are now in government, we intend to carry it through,” Dr Apaak added.
The Vice President of the policy think tank IMANI-Africa, Bright Simons, has hinted at a warning issued to President John Dramani Mahama by an international bank regarding the appointment of an individual to a high ministerial position.
According to Bright Simons, the bank’s concern stems from the fact that the individual in question is currently the subject of multiple investigations.
He added that this could affect the individual’s nomination and the government’s standing, especially as the administration is expected to uphold the highest moral standards following the establishment of Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL).
Writing on his X (formerly Twitter) page, Bright Simons stated, “Those who care about the reputation of the new Ghanaian government would be interested to know that an international bank has reached out confidentially to the office of the current President with a warning that an individual he intends to name to high ministerial office is the subject of adverse investigations. The outcomes of these investigations may become public.”
He continued, “The President was thus being alerted about the potential distractions this individual’s appointment may cause, given that ORAL’s credibility requires the government to maintain the moral high ground.”
The post, which has garnered significant attention online, concluded, “It is generally important that a Ghanaian government avoids a ‘chain of scandals.’ Scandals accumulate to sap goodwill. We can’t say more than this.”
President Mahama has begun announcing ministerial appointments following the vetting of the first three nominees, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as Minister of Finance, John Jinapor as Minister of Energy, and Dominic Ayine as Attorney General.
However, it remains unclear which ministerial appointment is being called into question.

Terkper tweeted: “Perseverance… it pays. Gunners!!His message resonated with Arsenal fans, who celebrated both the team’s win and the minister’s show of support.

No more illegal miners are believed to be trapped underground at a gold mine in South Africa, volunteers working with rescue teams have said.
At least 78 bodies and more than 200 survivors have been pulled out since Monday after a court ordered the government to facilitate rescue operations at the mine, the site of one of the most extraordinary tragedies to hit the industry.
Police said they would check that no-one was left on Thursday, when a rescue cage would be sent down the mine.
The stand-off began in November when the government ordered police to arrest any miner who surfaced, saying it was determined to end illegal mining.
This story contains a video that some people may find distressing.
During a visit on Tuesday, the police and mines ministers were insulted and told to leave by an angry crowd that blamed the government for the deaths.
Police said that more than 1,500 miners had come to the surface before the rescue operation began, Reuters news agency reports.
However, others remained underground, either because they feared arrest or were forced to stay there by gangs that control the mine.
A South African Police Service spokesman said of the volunteers’ statement that no-one was now still underground: “We will rely on the Mine Rescue Service to confirm this with their state-of-the-art equipment that will hopefully be able to give us a picture of what is happening underground.
“The Mine Rescue Service have confirmed that they will send the cage underground in the morning to see if any illegal miners surface with the cage. We cannot say for sure that the operation has been called off at this stage.”
Inside South Africa’s ‘ruthless’ gang-controlled gold mines
Many mines in South Africa have been abandoned over the last three decades by companies that did not find them economically viable.
The mines have been taken over by gangs, often former employees, that sell minerals they find on the black market.
This includes the mine in Stilfontein, some 145km (90 miles) south-west of the country’s biggest city, Johannesburg, which has been the focus of government efforts to clamp down on the illegal industry.
A rescue cage has been making trips down a shaft to reach scores of miners thought to be at least 2km (1.2 miles) underground.
Many of the survivors had been without food and water since November, leaving them emaciated. They are now receiving medical care.
The authorities say they will be charged with illegal mining, trespassing and contravention of immigration laws, as the majority of the miners are undocumented migrants from neighbouring countries.
“It’s a crime against the economy, it’s an attack on the economy,” Mines Minister Gwede Mantashe said on Wednesday as he defended the hard line taken against the miners.
South Africa relied heavily on miners from countries such as Lesotho and Mozambique before the industry went into decline.
Unemployment in South Africa is currently more than 30% and many former miners say they have little alternative source of income.

Ghanaian actor, Kwadwo ‘Lil Win’ Nkansah says he spent over Ghc1million to promote his movie, ‘A Country Called Ghana’.

According to him, people called him proud because of how much he invested to promote the movie which led him to conclude Ghanaians do not understand promotion.

A ranking member of the United States Senate committee on foreign relations, James E Risch, has asked the Treasury secretary, Janet Yellen, to leverage the position of the US as the largest shareholder in the International Monetary Fund to ask the IMF to get Ghana repay its debts to US entities.
It will be the precondition for US support for further IMF assistance to Ghana, he warned.
Expressing formal concerns about the potential US$3 billion International Monetary Fund loan to Ghana, Senator Risch cited significant unpaid debts owed by the Government of Ghana to American companies.
In a letter addressed to US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Senator Risch claimed that Ghana owes approximately $251 million in arrears to several US-based businesses, including Twin City Energy (TCE), American Tower Company, GSM, Chubb, Kosmos Energy and Zipline.
These arrears, he noted, have placed a severe financial burden on these companies and threaten their operations in Ghana.
Financial strain
“It is my understanding that the Government of Ghana owes approximately $251 million in outstanding payments to American companies,” Senator Risch wrote.
“These unpaid debts place substantial financial strain on US businesses in Ghana and jeopardise their operations and investments.”
Senator Risch expressed apprehension that the IMF’s anticipated approval of a $3 billion extended credit facility for Ghana would proceed without addressing these outstanding debts.
He argued that it could set a harmful precedent for other sovereign borrowers and affect US companies operating abroad negatively.
The senator emphasised that two of the affected companies, Twin City Energy and Chubb, have investments backed by the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), meaning that Ghana’s arrears affect not only private businesses, but also investments financed by US taxpayers.
Clear debts owed
Urging Secretary Yellen to leverage the United States’ position as the IMF’s largest shareholder, Senator Risch maintained that US support for further IMF assistance to Ghana be made contingent upon the Ghana government’s commitment to repaying its debts to American entities.
“I urge you to direct our executive director at the IMF to make clear that US support for further IMF assistance to Ghana will depend on a good-faith effort to establish a concrete and enforceable repayment plan for the remaining outstanding arrears,” he said.
The proposed repayment plan, according to Senator Risch, should include transparent auditing, reporting and enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance.
He also suggested that portions of the IMF disbursement be allocated specifically to clear debts owed to American companies.
Senator Risch warned that proceeding with IMF disbursements without addressing Ghana’s debt obligations could undermine constructive US engagement with Ghana and deepen Ghana’s reliance on international financial assistance.
“Allowing the next disbursement without addressing these concerns deepens Ghana’s reliance on international assistance while neglecting its obligations to US private-sector partners,” he cautioned.
The letter, copied to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the US executive director of the IMF, Elizabeth Shortino, and the Development Finance Corporation chief executive, Scott Nathan, also pointed to the urgency of resolving the issue.
Senator Risch urged the US Treasury and its executive director at the IMF to prioritise the resolution of Ghana’s outstanding debts, stating that future US support should be tied to responsible fiscal practices and fair treatment of American interests abroad.
This development comes as the IMF board of directors prepares to review Ghana’s third programme under the extended credit facility later this month.

A survey conducted by Joy News through its social media platforms has delivered a damning verdict on former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, holding him largely responsible for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) stunning defeat in the December 2024 election.
The survey, which sought public views on factors contributing to the NPP’s shocking loss, revealed that the majority of respondents blamed former President Akufo-Addo, citing his government’s harsh economic policies, nepotism, corruption, and the arrogance of some of his appointees as key reasons for the party’s defeat in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.
Akufo-Addo to Blame The most common sentiment expressed by respondents was criticism of former President Akufo-Addo, who was widely accused of failing to take adequate action, ultimately causing the NPP’s flagbearer and parliamentary candidates to suffer for his administration’s shortcomings.
Many respondents particularly criticized the former President for endorsing harsh and insensitive economic policies such as the e-levy, betting tax, COVID-19 levy, and poor debt management strategies.
Additionally, he was accused of shielding his cousin, former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, despite widespread criticism of his handling of the economy. Respondents highlighted that his delayed removal was perceived as a failure in leadership.
Nana Akufo-Addo was also criticized for his perceived arrogance, with many referring to instances where he reportedly instructed chiefs to stand to greet him, an action which some respondents felt disrespected traditional authorities and angered the electorate.
Several respondents further accused the former President of causing apathy within the NPP by refusing to heed internal advice and make timely changes in his government. This, they said, denied opportunities to deserving party members and created dissatisfaction among the grassroots.
The refusal to remove Ken Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister, despite overwhelming calls from NPP MPs and ordinary Ghanaians, was cited as evidence of his unresponsiveness to public concerns.
Exorbitant Taxes Beyond personal criticism, many respondents slammed certain policies under Akufo-Addo’s administration, claiming they brought economic hardship on Ghanaians.
Central to their concerns were taxes such as the e-levy, COVID-19 levy, and the betting tax, along with the government’s debt management approach.
Both former President Akufo-Addo and ex-Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta faced strong criticism for these policies, which were described as contributing significantly to the party’s unpopularity, even among its own supporters.
Arrogant Appointees, Corruption & the ‘Clearing Agent’ Tag Some respondents also criticized government appointees, accusing them of being arrogant and inaccessible, which they argued alienated them from the electorate and caused further disaffection for the party.
Corruption was another major theme, with several respondents revisiting scandals from the Akufo-Addo administration. Many pointed to the former President’s reputation as a “clearing agent,” a nickname he earned for exonerating appointees accused of corruption without proper investigations.
Neglect of Strongholds The survey further highlighted dissatisfaction with the Akufo-Addo government’s neglect of key projects, particularly in the party’s strongholds such as the Ashanti Region, as well as parts of the Western and Bono/Ahafo Regions.
In the Ashanti Region, many respondents faulted Akufo-Addo for failing to prioritize major projects, especially the Suame Interchange, which they believed could have boosted the party’s fortunes.
Conclusion In summary, most respondents who participated in the Joy News survey attributed the NPP’s defeat to former President Akufo-Addo’s leadership, blaming his administration’s policies and actions for the loss of both Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the presidential race and the unprecedented defeat of numerous NPP parliamentary candidates across the country.
