Preserve your legacy and avoid a ‘dangerous’ third-term bid no matter the pressure – Mahama told

John Dramani Mahama is the President of Ghana John Dramani Mahama is the President of Ghana

Dr Emmanuel Alex Nti, a political analyst, has opined that President John Dramani Mahama must avoid any political pressure or manoeuvring to accept the ‘dangerous call’ for him to pursue a third term.

Although he argued that the government’s performance, if satisfactory to Ghanaians, may influence them to support a third-term bid, it is an agenda that would undermine his legacy.

He stated that every great leader is one who trains others to take over and that the most appropriate course of action would be for him to have someone with the competence and skills who has gone through the mill seek the presidential seat instead of him going for a third term.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has the men to govern even without Mahama leading the party.

He added that the President has a team he is working with, and out of that team, which extends beyond those in government, there would always be someone to lead the party.

Dr Emmanuel Alex Nti stressed that President Mahama must preserve his legacy and walk away when his term ends.

Using the analogy of a celebrity or a musician with wild applause while performing on stage, he said such a performer must know when to bring the performance to an end in order not to destroy the beautiful performance which gave him or her the wild applause.

“As a musician or a celebrity who has gained popularity or prominence, you should know when to exit on stage. If you fail to do that, you risk undermining the reputation you’ve built over the years. I think President Mahama is aware of that, and because of the legacy he wants to leave behind, he would not risk it by allowing pressure to force him into accepting the third-term agenda.

“But one thing we should also understand is that every good leader builds a team and raises leaders so that even in his absence, they would be able to take over. I wouldn’t be surprised if he seeks a third term, but from how I know Mahama as someone who builds leaders around him, he will likely be backstage to coach whoever he thinks can also project his agenda for the better Ghana we all yearn for, because he knows when to exit the stage.”

Manchester United v Bournemouth live: Premier League result and reaction from eight-goal thriller at Old Trafford

How the 4-4 played out: Familiar defensive woes

The shift at the back was partly enforced. With Noussair Mazraoui already away at the Africa Cup of Nations and Matthijs De Ligt and Harry Maguire both injured, United had the 20-year-old Leny Yoro and 19-year-old Ayden Heaven in an inexperienced defence. Even at full strength, United have only kept one clean sheet all season – only Wolves have fewer with none – so that was always going to be a worry and it is one that Bournemouth were able to expose once they overcame a slow start. Even so, the manner in which United were twice carved open so easily at the start of the second half was startling, as was their inability to shut down the game, having worked so hard to regain the lead late on.

How the 4-4 played out: United’s first-half dominance

It was more evolution than revolution but there were definitely tweaks to Ruben Amorim’s much-discussed system. Though they initially lined up with the usual back three, it became a back four whenever Bournemouth were in possession as Diogo Dalot dropped back.

It certainly worked going forward as United put in one of the better first-half displays of the season – their six shots inside the opening 10 minutes were their most in a Premier League game in more than three years – and they had had 12 attempts at goal before Bournemouth mustered their first in the 29th minute. They would rue their failure to finish off a Cherries side who initially looked unnerved by what they faced.

Mainoo’s brother displays ‘Free Kobbie’ t-shirt at Old Trafford in message to Ruben Amorim

Kobbie Mainoo’s brother wore a t-shirt displaying the message ‘Free Kobbie Mainoo’ to Old Trafford during Manchester United’s 4-4 draw with Bournemouth in a clear message to head coach Ruben Amorim amid the uncertainty over the player’s future.

Mainoo has struggled for game time under Amorim and has yet to start a match in the Premier League this season after the midfielder’s loan request was rejected in August.

The 20-year-old academy product, who scored the winning goal for United in the 2024 FA Cup final and started for England in the Euro 2024 final, was loudly cheered onto the pitch when he was brought on by Amorim as a second-half substitute on Monday night.

Man United’s next task is clear as dramatic intervention leads to game of the season

On the night Ruben Amorim delivered the surprise of the season by jettisoning his beloved 3-4-3 formation, Manchester United contrived to put part of his new shape in the scoreline. A 4-4 was not a tribute to Amorim’s unexpected switch to 4-4-2 as much as the consequence of an extraordinary evening of frenzied attacking, poor defending and flawed goalkeeping as two sides traded free kicks and comebacks.

Richard Jolly15 December 2025 23:25

What is Ruben Amorim’s new Manchester United formation and how did it work?

Ruben Amorim appeared to deviate from his trusted 3-4-3 for the first time as Manchester United manager as he experimented with a new-look system for the Premier League match against Bournemouth.

At first glance, a chaotic 4-4 draw against Andoni Iraola’s side does not suggest that the tweak brought much improvement. But Amorim’s side were far sharper in attack and were a constant danger throughout the game.

Amorim said before kick-off that United will need to “adapt” when Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui depart for the Africa Cup of Nations and notably said that his team “need to learn from some mistakes we did in the past”.

Critics of the Portuguese head coach have said he has stayed too attached to his 3-4-3 system since replacing Erik ten Hag last November. It was the system he used to great success at his previous club Sporting Lisbon but it has been ineffective so far at Old Trafford.

Amorim joked in September that not even the Pope could persuade him to change his formation. “This is my job. This is my responsibility. This is my life. So, I will not change that,” he said.

Andoni Iraola: ‘Entertaining, but it’s just a point!’

Fair to stay Andoni Iraola was happier with his side’s attacking than defending during this 4-4 draw at Old Trafford.

“I suppose it was entertaining for everyone. Two teams that attacked much better than we defended. We played quite open, both teams,” he told BBC Sport.

“We struggled in the first 15-20 minutes. We made some adjustments but we were losing 1-0. From there I was quite happy with how the game was.

“The last two were massive chances, great saves from Lammens. We take a point. We can use a lot of good things from today but things to correct.”

Ruben Amorim: ‘It was fun for the fans – but we should have won’

A difficult game for Ruben Amorim to summarise. He tried while speaking to BBC Sport:

“It’s really disappointing. We are really disappointed. Crazy game. It might look like we lost the two points in the second half but I think we lost them in the first half.

“We dominated and created so many chances. We had to go to half-time with a different result.

“In the end we deserved more. It was a fun game for eveyone at home.

“People especially at Old Trafford want to win but they want to be inspired to see a team play good football. We did that well in certain moments.

“It was a good performance but we need to be more clinical because created so many chances.”

What could have been for Bournemouth

Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens made five saves tonight, and three of them came after the 95th minute.

Two of them came against David Brooks, who had a header and a left-footed shot from inside the box to win it at the death.

Gary Neville highlights Man United concern despite praising performance

“Absolute madness,” Gary Neville says on Sky Sports. “End-to-end. Punch for punch, especially the second half. It’s a game that you could not call. I’m not sure who’s going to be happiest at the end.

“I said partway through that game, I could live with how Manchester United played through that game but you can’t get away from it’s seven points dropped from their last three games at home.”

National Service Authority addresses posting and validation challenges

0

The Acting Director of the National Service Authority, Ruth Dela Seddoh, has acknowledged persistent challenges affecting the smooth registration and posting of national service personnel, attributing many of the difficulties to delays from tertiary institutions, non-compliance by service personnel and institutional bottlenecks.

She made this known at a press briefing on Monday, December 15, 2025.

According to her, even after the Authority completes its internal processes, some academic institutions fail to promptly update their records following gazetting, creating significant delays in the release of primary graduate lists required for deployment.

“From some academic institutions, even after our personnel complete the process, delays in updating their records after gazetting remain a major concern,” she said.

“We also continue to face significant delays in receiving the primary graduate list.”

Dela Seddoh explained that beyond genuine technical issues where graduates are unable to register or are released late from their initial postings, investigations have revealed behavioural and systemic factors contributing to registration challenges.

link National Service: 7 key things prospective service personnel must know

“Analysis indicates that beyond the genuine technical implementation issues, there were also factors including preferences for special postings to particular institutions, preferably within the public sector,” she stated.

She noted that many graduates aligned with private sector placements choose to delay reporting, holding out for public sector roles despite limited vacancies.

“This has created auto-congestion because public sector vacancies are limited and competitively allocated,” she said.

link All 12,000 NSS personnel registered in June must re-register – Acting NSA Director-General

Another major challenge, she disclosed, is the failure of some service personnel to complete mandatory regional validation after reporting to their stations.

“Some personnel reported to their stations but failed to complete the mandatory regional validation. Doing this means that next year, in our system, you have not done institutional validation,” she explained.

She also appealed to graduates to accept their postings and serve where assigned, warning that refusal to report in hopes of securing preferred locations undermines the national service scheme.

“National service, in its very essence, is about deploying your skills to institutional needs,” she said.

“When individuals choose not to report to their assigned posts hoping to secure a change, it creates confusion and systemic strain.”

Salaga-South MP unites youth through annual end-of-year football gala

Member of Parliament for the Salaga-South Constituency, Hajia Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah Member of Parliament for the Salaga-South Constituency, Hajia Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah

The Member of Parliament for the Salaga-South Constituency, Hajia Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, has called on the youth of the constituency to unite and work collectively towards its development.

The call was delivered on her behalf by the Salaga-South Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Haruna Abdul Aziz, popularly known as Chairman Abotsi, on Monday, December 15, 2025, during the official opening ceremony of the 2025 End-of-Year Football Gala Matches.

The annual sporting event is organised and sponsored by the Member of Parliament as part of efforts to promote unity, peace and youth development through sports.

Addressing players, match officials and supporters, Abdul Aziz described the football gala as a strategic initiative designed to foster peaceful coexistence, strengthen unity among the youth and unearth football talent within the constituency.

He urged all participating teams to uphold discipline, fair play and sportsmanship throughout the competition, stressing that football should serve as a tool for cohesion rather than division.

“This competition is about fun, unity and development. All teams should see themselves as one family and play in the spirit of peace,” he emphasised.

Representing the Kpembewura and the traditional authority at the ceremony, the Kpembe Youth Chief, Braimah Mohammed Joe, popularly known as Chief Xcojay, commended the Member of Parliament for sustaining the annual football gala.

He noted that the tournament has become a major source of entertainment while also serving as a platform to unite the youth and channel their energies into positive and productive ventures for the development of the municipality.

Chief Xcojay further advised participating teams to exercise tolerance, patience, and mutual respect throughout the competition.

He also used the occasion to draw attention to the growing menace of drug abuse among the youth and appealed to them to desist from such practices and instead focus on sports and other meaningful activities that contribute to personal and community development.

The opening ceremony featured two matches. In the first encounter, Salaga Ree Boys defeated Dagbon Stars by a solitary goal.

The second match between Salaga Soccer Babies and Sisipe United ended goalless in regulation time, with Salaga Soccer Babies emerging victorious in a 2–1 penalty shootout.

In all, ten teams from across the constituency are competing for the ultimate trophy in this year’s competition.

The grand finale is scheduled for Wednesday, December 31 2025, at the Salaga Astro Turf.

The ceremony was attended by several personalities, including Chief Osman Mahama (Kanakamade), Chief Alhassan Yussif, the Salaga Youth Chief, Sumaila Ibn Hafiz (Constituency Zongo Caucus Coordinator), Mustapha Tawfic (Youth Employment Agency), Tanko Yakubu (Constituency Elections Director), and Tahiru Misbawu Jawula (Municipal NADMO Director).

The event attracted a large turnout of football enthusiasts and supporters from across the constituency, underscoring the growing role of football as a tool for unity, peace, and youth empowerment in the Salaga-South Constituency.

Trump sues BBC for defamation over Panorama speech edit

0

US President Donald Trump has filed a multi-billion-dollar defamation lawsuit against the BBC over an edit of his 6 January 2021 speech in a Panorama documentary.

Trump accused the broadcaster of defamation and of violating a trade practices law, according to court documents filed in Florida. He asked for $5bn (£3.7bn) in damages on each of the claims.

The BBC has apologised to Trump, but rejected his demands for compensation and disagreed that there was any “basis for a defamation claim”.

Trump’s legal team accused the BBC of defaming him by “intentionally, maliciously, and deceptively doctoring his speech”. The BBC has not yet responded to the lawsuit.

Trump said last month that he planned to sue the BBCfor the documentary, which aired in the UK ahead of the 2024 US election.

“I think I have to do it,” Trump told reporters of his plans. “They cheated. They changed the words coming out of my mouth.”

In his speech on 6 January 2021, before a riot at the US Capitol, Trump told a crowd: “We’re going to walk down to the Capitol, and we’re going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women.”

More than 50 minutes later in the speech, he said: “And we fight. We fight like hell.”

In the Panorama programme, a clip showed him as saying: “We’re going to walk down to the Capitol… and I’ll be there with you. And we fight. We fight like hell.”

The BBC acknowledged that the edit had given “the mistaken impression” he had “made a direct call for violent action”, but disagreed that there was a basis for a defamation claim.

In November, a leaked internal BBC memo criticised the editing of the speech and led to the BBC’s director general, Tim Davie, and its head of news, Deborah Turness, to resign.

Before Trump filed the lawsuit, lawyers for the BBC had responded in length to the president’s claims.

They said there was no malice in the edit and that the programme did not harm Trump, as he was re-elected shortly after it aired.

They also said the BBC did not have the rights to, and did not, distribute the Panorama programme on its US channels. While the documentary was available on BBC iPlayer, it was restricted to viewers in the UK.

In his lawsuit, Trump cites agreements the BBC had with other distributors to show content, specifically one with a third-party media corporation that allegedly held licensing rights to the documentary outside the UK.

The BBC has not responded to these claims, nor has the corporation commented on the alleged distribution agreement.

The suit also claims that people in Florida may have accessed the programme via a VPN or the streaming service BritBox.

“The Panorama Documentary’s publicity, coupled with significant increases in VPN usage in Florida since its debut, establishes the immense likelihood that citizens of Florida accessed the Documentary before the BBC had it removed,” the lawsuit said.

Ashanti Police arrest five over robbery and murder in Kumasi Ashanti Police arrest five over robbery and murder in Kumasi

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has made significant breakthroughs in combating crime, arresting five suspects in connection with robbery and murder incidents in Kumasi.

Two suspects, Farouk Iddris, 20, and Salim Mohammed, 19, were arrested for the robbery and murder of 28-year-old Silva Ngozi at Asokore Mampong on December 6, 2025.

At a press conference today, Regional Police Commander, DCOP Arthur Osei Akoto, said the suspects allegedly stabbed Ngozi with a knife during the robbery, resulting in her death.

A machete, knives, and other offensive weapons were retrieved from one of the suspects’ hideouts, and an iPhone 11 Pro belonging to the deceased was recovered.

In a related development, three other suspects, Abdul Fatawu, 22, Philip Nyarko, 24, and Samak Hadi, 21, were arrested for a string of armed robberies across Kumasi.

The police recovered 59 iPhones, six Android phones, four tablets, and five laptops from their hideouts.

The suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations and will be put before court soon.

He assured the public of command’s commitment to maintaining peace and order in the region and urged residents to provide information to help combat crime.

CAF confirms alcohol and laser pointer ban for AFCON 2025 in Morocco

The Confederation of African Football, in collaboration with the Local Organising Committee for the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, has released a detailed list of prohibited items for all tournament venues, confirming a strict ban on alcohol and laser pointers.

The measures, announced ahead of the tournament’s kickoff in December, are aimed at ensuring a safe, fair and family-friendly environment across all host stadiums.

CAF’s decision to outlaw laser pointers follows repeated incidents in African club and international competitions, where the devices were used by spectators to distract players, particularly goalkeepers, during decisive moments. Officials say the practice undermines fair play and poses safety concerns.

A LOC official noted that CAF is determined to enforce zero tolerance toward actions that endanger players or compromise the integrity of matches. The issue has drawn increasing criticism from teams and officials, prompting stronger regulation.

In line with Moroccan law and cultural practices, CAF also confirmed that alcohol will be prohibited in and around all AFCON 2025 stadiums. The restriction extends to glass bottles, cans and similar containers as part of enhanced safety measures for large crowds.

Other banned items include weapons, pyrotechnics, large bags beyond approved limits, and banners carrying political, religious or offensive messages.

CAF and Moroccan authorities say the regulations form part of a broader security plan, supported by trained safety and security personnel across all host cities. With Africa’s top stars set to feature, organisers say the focus remains firmly on football and a smooth tournament experience.

Kobbie Mainoo Urged To Leave Manchester United by Club Legend

0

England starlet frozen out under Amorim

After 15 Premier League games this season, Mainoo has not started a single one and has accumulated just 183 minutes of action. The contrast to his breakout 2024 campaign, in which he impressed for both club and country, could not be sharper. His lack of involvement has left him increasingly disillusioned, with insiders revealing he is “deeply frustrated” by Amorim’s reluctance to play him.

Amorim insists Mainoo “deserves to be playing”, but his selections continue to favour Casemiro’s experience and Bruno Fernandes’ influence, leaving the England midfielder sidelined. Reports indicate the United manager has been pushing Mainoo to improve out of possession, which has been the primary reason behind his omission. The tension reached a tipping point when Mainoo remained an unused substitute in the 1-1 draw with West Ham. Paul Scholes questioned the decision publicly.

Ince advises Mainoo to leave Man Utd in January

Speaking to Covers.com, Ince insisted Mainoo must now consider a move where he can play regular football.

“If I were in Mainoo’s position, I’d be looking for a change of club in January,” he said. “The World Cup would be my ultimate priority, and leaving Manchester United – permanently or on loan – appears to be the best option to secure a place in the England squad. When Mainoo first burst on the scene, everyone was raving about him; he was playing well for Manchester United and was getting minutes for England. But since then, something has happened, and I don’t know whether it’s the player or the manager, Ruben Amorim. Perhaps his rise happened too quickly, but whatever the reason is, the journey hasn’t been easy for him.”

The former midfielder believes this was the year Mainoo should have overtaken an ageing Casemiro.

He said: “Given that last year Casemiro was coming under some pressure from the fans and he was clearly aging on the pitch, I thought this would be the season for Mainoo to take his shirt and cement himself into that starting line-up as one of Amorim’s key players. He’ll also be conscious that Thomas Tuchel will be picking his England squad based on domestic playing time – which Mainoo isn’t getting much of.”

Napoli move gains momentum amid growing interest

Mainoo has attracted interest from clubs across Europe, with Napoli among the most serious contenders. The Italian champions already have former United midfielder Scott McTominay and forward Rasmus Hojlund in their ranks, and are dealing with an injury crisis that has intensified their search for midfield reinforcements.

Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna addressed the rumours and told Sky Sport Italia: “He is a player who has been linked to Napoli since August, also for his age, his potential, and the transfer opportunity. This team is doing well, it is consolidated. We have some important absences right now, but sooner or later the lads will return, strong and determined. We have to make the right evaluations, so we’ll see how things progress along the way.”

Speaking on the Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano echoed the growing demand for Mainoo and said: “It’s normal that some of the clubs interested in Kobbie Mainoo. For example, Napoli hope for the possibility to get the player as soon as possible. They need players. Not only Napoli, but more than 10 clubs are interested in Kobbie. So let’s see what’s going to happen there. At the moment, there is still no green light from United, and unless the situation changes in the next days, everything depends on United or Ruben Amorim and on the timing of this story.”

Is Napoli the ideal solution for Mainoo?

A temporary spell in Naples could offer Mainoo regular starts and the chance to rebuild his confidence under the guidance of a demanding manager in Antonio Conte. Serie A has long been a proving ground for Manchester United players seeking redemption; from Romelu Lukaku to Chris Smalling and, more recently, McTominay. Now, Mainoo will be looking to follow in their footsteps.

the dirty business of recycling in Vietnam

A worker handling plastic bottles before they can be melted into tiny pellets for reuse (Nhac NGUYEN)
A worker handling plastic bottles before they can be melted into tiny pellets for reuse (Nhac NGUYEN)

Crouched between mountains of discarded plastic, Lanh strips the labels off bottles of Coke, Evian and local Vietnamese tea drinks so they can be melted into tiny pellets for reuse.

More waste arrives daily, piling up like technicolour snowdrifts along the roads and rivers of Xa Cau, one of hundreds of “craft” recycling villages encircling Vietnam’s capital Hanoi where waste is sorted, shredded and melted.

The villages present a paradox: they enable reuse of some of the 1.8 million tonnes of plastic waste Vietnam produces each year, and allow employees to earn much-needed wages.

But recycling is done with few regulations, pollutes the environment and threatens the health of those involved, both workers and experts told AFP.

“This job is extremely dirty. The environmental pollution is really severe,” said Lanh, 64, who asked to be identified only by her first name for fear of losing her job.

It is a conundrum facing many fast-growing economies, where plastic use and disposal has outpaced the government’s ability to collect, sort and recycle.

Even in wealthy countries, recycling rates are often abysmal because plastic products can be expensive to repurpose and sorting rates are low.

But the rudimentary methods used in Vietnam’s craft villages produce dangerous emissions and expose workers to toxic chemicals, experts say.

“Air pollution control is zero in such facilities,” said Hoang Thanh Vinh, an analyst at the United Nations Development Programme focused on waste recycling.

Untreated wastewater is often dumped directly into waterways, he added.

The true scale of the problem is hard to judge, with few comprehensive studies.

In one village, Minh Khai, Vinh said a sediment analysis found “very high contamination of lead and the presence of dioxins”, as well as furan — all of which have been linked to cancer.

And in 2008, the life expectancy for residents of the villages was found to be a full decade shorter than the national average, according to the environment ministry.

Local authorities and the environment ministry did not reply to AFP’s requests for comment.

Lanh believes the toxic waste in Xa Cau gave her husband blood cancer, but she still spends her days sorting rubbish to pay his medical bills.

“This village is full of cancer cases, people just waiting to die,” she said.

– Sickness and wealth –

No data exists on cancer rates in the villages, but AFP spoke to more than half a dozen workers in Xa Cau and Minh Khai who reported colleagues or family members with cancer.

Xuan Quach, coordinator of the Vietnam Zero Waste Alliance, said sustained exposure to the “toxic environment” made it inevitable that residents face “health risks that are of course higher”.

Dat, 60, has been sorting plastic in Xa Cau for a decade and said the job “definitely affects your health”.

“There’s no shortage of cancer cases in this village.”

But there is also no shortage of workers, keen for the economic lifeline recycling provides.

In Xa Cau, plastic piles up around multi-storey homes, some with ornate facades noting the years they were built.

“We get richer thanks to this business,” said 58-year-old Nguyen Thi Tuyen, who lives in a two-storey home.

“Now all the houses are brick houses… In the past, we were just a farming village.”

Most of the waste the villagers recycle is home-grown, researchers and residents say.

But even though Vietnam only recycles about a third of its own plastic waste, it also imports thousands of tons annually from Europe, the United States and Asia.

Imports soared after China stopped accepting plastic waste in 2018, though recently Vietnam has tightened regulations and announced plans to phase out imports too.

For now, US and EU trade statistics show shipments to Vietnam from the two economies reached over 200,000 tonnes last year.

In Minh Khai, the owner of a plant producing plastic pellets said domestic supply “is not enough”.

“I have to import from overseas,” 23-year-old Dinh, who only gave one name, explained over the whir of heavy machinery.

Most domestic waste doesn’t get sorted, so it cannot easily be reused.

There have been efforts to improve the industry, including a ban on burning unrecyclable waste and building modern facilities.

But burning continues and unusable waste is often dumped in empty lots, according to Vinh.

He said the government should help recyclers move to industrial parks with better environmental safeguards, formalising a sector that handles a quarter of the country’s recycling.

“The current way of recycling in recycling villages… is not good to the environment at all.”

Nigeria Football Federation charges Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle to reach AFCON 2025 final

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau has charged Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle to reach the finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The 35th edition of the continental showpiece will commence on December 21, 2025, with 24 countries expected to battle it out for the trophy in Morocco.

Nigeria are drawn in Group C against Tunisia, Tanzania and Uganda. The Super Eagles will kick start their campaign against the Taifa Stars of Tanzania on December 23, 2025.

Few days to the tournament, the leader of Nigeria football has set an audacious target for Eric Chelle, urging the former Mali gaffer to steer the Super Eagles to the finals of the AFCON.

“The mandate given to Eric Chelle is to get to the AFCON final,” he told Eagles FM in an interview.

Besides, Gusau reaffirmed his stance on allowing coaches full control of team affairs, noting that he does not interfere with player selection or team operations.

“I will never instruct a coach on which players to invite. Since becoming NFF president, I have never stayed in the same hotel with the national team because I do not want to be a distraction,” he explained.

Nigeria last won the tournament in 2013 and has since endured mixed fortunes, including a group-stage exit in 2021 and a painful runners-up finish in 2023. Against that backdrop, the NFF’s target reflects both ambition and mounting pressure.

Chelle remains unbeaten since his appointment in January and has already raised eyebrows with bold squad decisions, including new call-ups and notable omissions.

The coach inherits a talented squad led by Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey, but expectations from fans remain unforgiving.

Kobbie Mainoo Urged To Leave Manchester United by Club Legend

Four arraigned over importation of cannabis concealed in gift box

Four persons have appeared before an Accra High Court for their alleged roles in the importation of cannabis sativa concealed in a gift box without lawful authority.

The accused include Godfred Mishiame, a motor rider, and three others; Zion Sam Kish, Prince Sefa Boakye, and Dennis Smith, who are currently at large.

They have been charged with conspiracy to commit crime and importation of narcotic drugs without a licence issued by the Minister of Health.

Mishiame is additionally facing four counts of possession of narcotic drugs for trafficking without lawful authority.

He is alleged to have had in his possession a quantity of cocaine when his residence was searched.

Mishiame has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

The court admitted him to bail in the sum of GHC100,000, with three sureties, two of whom are to be justified.

One of the sureties, the court ordered, should be a public servant earning not less than GH¢30,000.

It directed the prosecution to file its disclosures on or before January 12, 2026, while Mishiame is also to file the names of his witnesses by the same date.

The prosecution said on August 4, 2025, officers of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) stationed at the Ghana Post Office in Accra intercepted a parcel during a routine inspection of inbound EMS parcels, on suspicion that it concealed narcotic drugs.

The parcel, which was described as containing “varied clothing”, was flagged for further investigations.

On August 5, NACOC officers, acting on intelligence, arrested Joshua Mills, a clearing agent, who was found in possession of the parcel’s tracking number and authority note.

Mills told investigators that he had been instructed to clear the parcel.

The parcel was opened in his presence and found to contain five vacuum-sealed plant-like substances.

A field test conducted on the substances tested positive for Delta-9 Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a narcotic drug.

Further investigations revealed that Mills had been contracted by Zion Sam Kish, the second accused person, to clear the parcel and forward it to Esther Naa Dede Armah at a hostel in Haatso.

Mills, however, denied knowledge of the contents of the parcel and assisted with investigations.

The court heard that Esther, during interrogation, said Kish had instructed her to receive the parcel, which was to be collected later by a delivery person.

She also denied knowledge of the parcel’s contents and assisted investigators.

Later the same day, Mishiame arrived on a motorbike to collect the parcel. He was arrested after opening it and confirming its contents.

During his arrest, Mishiame allegedly sent a message to Kish, alerting him to the presence of the police.

On August 7, a search conducted at Mishiame’s residence led to the discovery of 11 branded packets of plant material suspected to be cannabis, 30 wraps of plant-like material, and one packet of whitish substance suspected to be cocaine.

The others were 42 empty bottles of Benylin containing codeine-based syrup, a weighing scale, packaging materials, and other drug paraphernalia.

A Royal motorbike and cash of GHC864 were also seized.

Mishiame has denied ownership of the seized narcotics.

The alleged drugs were forwarded to the Ghana Standards Authority for analytical examination.

The plant materials tested positive for cannabis sativa, with a total net weight of 1,218.29 grammes, while the whitish substance tested positive for cocaine, with a net weight of 0.52 grammes.

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann says he is strongly looking forward to playing against Ghana.

The European giants will host the four-time African champions in an international friendly game as part of their preparations for the 2026 World Cup.

The game will be staged in Stuttgart on March 30, 2026, with kick-off scheduled at 20:45 GMT.

“We are very much looking forward to the clash with Otto [Addo]’s team,” Nagelsmann said.

“Their strong transition play can give us a taste of what to expect in the World Cup group match against Ivory Coast,” he added.

In previous encounters, Ghana lost to Germany 1-0 at the 2010 World Cup and drew 2-2 with the Germans at the 2014 edition.

Meanwhile, Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama, while Germany has been housed in Group E alongside Cote D’Ivoire, Curacao and Ecuador.

19 suspects arrested in joint operation at Akatsi

A joint Sogakope-Akatsi Police led operation, has led to the arrest of 19 suspects including seven Nigerian girls believed to be engaged in commercial sex trade at a popular joint in Akatsi.

The exercise, which occurred around 1930 hours on Friday, saw the entire Akatsi Township boys, whom some referred to as ‘game boys’ moving out from their usual resting joints.

Daniel Dagba, the Akatsi South Municipal Chief Executive and Chairman of Akatsi South MUSEC, had since confirmed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA).

He said the suspects were picked up at various locations within the Akatsi township including Ahiatsi Star Pub.

Chief Superintendent Isaac Baah, the acting Sogakope Divisional Police Commander, in an interaction with the GNA, also confirmed the arrests.

He added that the suspects were currently in detention for further action.

Baah also indicated that his personnel remained prepared to ensure that sanity prevailed before, during, and after the Yuletide.

He, however, declined to give other full details regarding the exercise.

Nigerian music icon Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, has called on citizens to stop fixating on his personal life and instead pay attention to the pressing challenges facing the nation.

DAILY POST reports that the singer made the statement on December 12, 2025, while performing at a live event, where he entertained his fans with his hit songs.

Addressing the crowd, 2Baba emphasized that discussions surrounding his marriage to Edo State lawmaker Natasha Osawaru have persisted for far too long.

He stressed that there are far more important national matters that warrant public focus than gossip about his personal affairs.

The singer noted that after years of entertaining Nigerians through his music, it was time for the public to channel their attention to issues that genuinely affect the country.

He said; “Make una ignore all that nonsense. Some serious things are happening in Nigeria. I’ve entertained you all enough. Let’s focus on more important things.”

Lands and Natural Resources Minister with CSOs Lands and Natural Resources Minister with CSOs

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has held a crunch meeting with civil society organisations (CSOs)to discuss Ghana’s lithium agreement, which has now been withdrawn from Parliament.

In a fruitful deliberation on Monday, December 13, 2025, the minister explained government’s position on the deal and the new vision for lithium exploration, following the recall of the agreement last week.

In his remarks, Armah-Kofi Buah stressed that government is focused on crafting a deal that benefits the local Ewoyaa community and the country at large.

He therefore urged participants to offer honest and constructive feedback to strengthen the documentation of a new agreement between the Government of Ghana and Barari DV, local subsidiary of Atlantic Lithium.

Responding to the Minister’s invitation, participants from the invited CSOs made cogent inputs which cut across Ghana’s royalty stakes, equity allocation, as well as salient environmental and community development concerns.

The views from the participants, which ranged from financials, sustainability, gender and health and safety concerns, were duly acknowledged by the minister, who pledged government’s commitment to incorporate all the criticisms and suggestions into the revised agreement.

One of the participants, Dr Steve Manteaw, thanked the minister for creating an enabling environment to deepen stakeholder engagement in the management of Ghana’s resources.

Policy analyst and researcher at the Centre for Environmental Management and Sustainable Energy (CEMSE), Benjamin Nsiah, also thanked the minister for inviting the opinions of CSOs and urged government to continue to deepen stakeholder engagement.

On his part, the Country Manager of Atlantic Lithium, Ahmed Salim, who also joined the discussion, welcomed the views and criticisms from the various participants and called for more cooperation in the drafting of a new agreement.

Speaking at the end of the engagement, the lands minister reassured that the Ministry would continue to engage more stakeholders towards the conclusion of a new deal, adding that his doors remain open to further interactions on the subject matter.

Meanwhile, a series of other engagements are also in the pipeline as part of government’s commitment to harvest more inputs in making Ghana’s lithium discovery a blessing to all, the minister revealed.

The Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) brought energy and visibility to the first-ever UK/Ghana Sports Day held at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, 25 November 2025.

The joint Ghana–UK initiative showcased more than twenty sporting disciplines and attracted hundreds of spectators, athletes, and officials—offering a rare opportunity to witness a wide spectrum of Ghana’s sporting talent on one platform.

For the GRFU, the event represented not only participation but also a significant step toward expanding visibility, strengthening collaboration, and renewing momentum for the sport’s development nationwide.

Ghana Rugby fielded five teams—two women’s sides and three men’s teams—demonstrating the sport’s depth and growing national interest. The women opened with two spirited exhibition matches, earning applause for their discipline and teamwork.

The men followed with six competitive games marked by intensity and technical improvement, reflecting the sport’s steady progress in recent years. Medals were awarded to the teams, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

A symbolic highlight of the day was the arrival of His Royal Highness Prince Edward, The Duke of Edinburgh. His warm engagements with the players created memorable moments for athletes who rarely receive such high-profile attention.

His remarks on the unifying and transformative power of sport resonated strongly.

GRFU President Ms Rafatu Inusah later presented him with a Ghana Rugby jersey, underscoring the Union’s pride and commitment to deepening international sporting ties.

The event also drew strong national and continental support. Rugby Africa President Herbert Mensah attended part of the men’s games, affirming the GRFU’s growing presence within the African rugby community.

Senior government officials—including Youth and Sports Minister Kofi Adams and National Sports Authority Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah—were present, alongside representatives from the UK High Commission and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, signalling robust institutional backing for the occasion.

Institutions risk blacklisting for rejecting service personnel – Ruth Dela Seddoh

The National Service Authority has disclosed that all public institutions that reject personnel without valid reasons risk punitive measures, including blacklisting from future postings.

The Acting Director-General, Ruth Dela Seddoh, made this known during a press briefing on Monday, December 15, 2025.

She noted that she has formally written to the Office of the President to ensure that these institutions accept their allocated national service personnel.

“We have formally written through our Supervisor Ministry to the Office of the President to insist that all ministries, departments, agencies and government institutions) that are located service personnel must honour their quotas.

“Further, the institutions who reject personnel must, without valid reasons, and official release letters, will be subjected to punitive actions, including blacklisting them from subsequent postings”, she noted.

Dela Seddoh said such last-minute rejection of personnel undermine the very spirit of the national service program.

“These frustrations are unacceptable. We have moved beyond appeals,” she said, stressing that the Authority is leveraging the highest levels of government to enforce compliance.

She condemned the treatment some personnel receive, noting that many are sent away without dignity or respect.

“This is not a request for convenience; it is a demand for operational integrity, national responsibility, and respect for our future leaders,” she stated.

Assuring service personnel that their concerns are being addressed, she urged institutions to plan for, accept, and integrate their quotas.

“Do not shirk this responsibility. Let us build a system defined not by last-minute rejections, but by seamless transitions and mutual respect,” she said.

Adelaide Test to receive increased security as precautionary measure

Cricket fans heading to Adelaide Oval for the start of the third Ashes Test have been reassured that there is no increased threat level following the Bondi Beach terrorist attack, but extra security will be put in place in and around the ground as a precautionary measure.

South Australia’s police commissioner, Grant Stevens, said special security-response police armed with rifles will be present at the match starting on Wednesday – the first major sporting event to be held since Sunday’s shooting – but fans should not be alarmed.

There’s a balance between the concern about police officers carrying rifles in and about the community, balanced with the need for us to be able to effectively respond to an event, should an event occur and these officers are specifically trained for that purpose.

There’s no intelligence at this time to indicate that there are any increased levels of threat or security risks around the cricket or any other community event.

But notwithstanding that, we apply a level of diligence to make sure that people attending can do so with that confidence that they are attending a safe and well-managed event.

Howard says his gun laws banning semiautomatic and automatic weapons prevented ‘infinitely bigger’ death toll

Asked about whether he supports reform on gun licenses and gun ownership, Howard says he’s not “aware of a crackdown”.

Last night’s national cabinet agreed to reform gun laws, including to stop gun licenses being granted in perpetuity.

Howard says that his gun laws, legislated after the Port Arthur massacre, would have stopped this tragedy having an even higher death toll.

What I am aware of that if the guns that my crackdown removed after Port Arthur had still been legally available, in other words automatic and semiautomatic weapons, the death toll gruesome though it was, it would be infinitely bigger.

Howard says he is open to changes to the legislation but concedes that there will always be “too many” guns in Australia.

There are truth there are too many guns in our community. People ignore laws, and it’s the potency of the weapon that was so drastically changed after Port Arthur. Just imagine if one of those criminals had had access to an automatic or semiautomatic weapon.

Howard accuses Albanese of failing to provide ‘moral leadership’ on denouncing antisemitism

Krishani Dhanji

Former PM John Howard is now speaking to journalists out of Sydney, and again says Anthony Albanese and foreign Penny Wong have not done enough over the past two years since 7 October 2023 to combat antisemitism.

Howard says Albanese hasn’t provided “moral leadership” in responding to antisemitism.

His greatest failure is not to provide the moral leadership that a prime minister can in denouncing antisemitism.

There is little doubt since 7 October 2023, not enough has been done by those who command authority and respect in our society to prevent cauterise and denounce the spread of antisemitism. And I hope that this terrible event will be a wake-up call to those who have been asleep at the wheel on this issue …

I’m ashamed of the fact that our relationship with Israel has broken down. Israel has been an ally of Australia.

John Howard praises Ahmed al-Ahmed’s courage

Jumping back to John Howard’s interview on Sky News, the former prime minister lauds the bravery of Ahmed al-Ahmed, who tackled one of the alleged gunmen and took his weapon from him.

Ahmed is in St George hospital – currently receiving a visit from the PM – while he recovers.

Howard says Ahmed’s actions are a reminder that the community should “not lose faith in the Australian achievement”.

I think that the single act of greatest courage we’ve seen is that magnificent man who tackled the bloke with the gun, and I understand he’s a Muslim … that is a reminder that there are good people of every persuasion in this wonderful country about and although it’s a terrible tragedy and a reminder that anything can happen here, we should not lose faith in the Australian achievement.

Howard continues Liberal attacks on Albanese claiming gun law changes are a ‘diversion’ to addressing antisemitism

Former Liberal prime minister, John Howard, says Anthony Albanese has let down Jewish Australians, and us using gun law changes as a “diversion” instead of tackling antisemitism.

Howard first brought in strict gun control in the wake of the Port Arthur massacre in 1996 when 35 people were shot dead. Last night, after a national cabinet meeting, Albanese said there would be a further tightening of the laws.

But in an interview with Sky News, Howard says:

I don’t want that … to be degraded into a debate about changes to gun [laws], because that is a diversion. The issue here is antisemitism, the failure of the last two years has been that of the federal government, led by the prime minister Anthony Albanese, to bring sufficient energy to a broad-based attack on the evil of antisemitism.

Allan says best if states ‘act in concert’ on gun law reform

The Victorian premier, Jacinta Allan, says she strongly supported the national cabinet decision to strengthen gun laws across the nation. While she has criticised the pace of national reform in the past, she says it’s her preference to “act in concert” on this occasion.

Allan went on:

It is best that we act in concert. It is best that we act as one nationally – and that was certainly the intention out of yesterday’s national cabinet meeting, that not only do we need to act in a uniform way, we need to act with urgency … The work has already started.

There is a very strong understanding that it does need to come about with some urgency but as you could appreciate, we also need to make sure we get this next set of gun law reform right, and so that in terms of the drafting of the laws that will take the time it takes, but will be done with a sense of urgency.

Asked why the state was yet to move onto the national firearms register, Allan says they were working towards the 2028 deadline. She says:

The prime minister made it clear that he would like to see that date accelerated, and that is a commitment that we have given, and we’ll be looking at how we can bring forward the work that’s been done here in Victoria.

The police minister, Anthony Carbines, says:

Our government is committed to doing everything we can to meet earlier timelines … and I’m sure that will form part of our discussions at the police minister’s council tomorrow.

Ashes Test to pay tribute to victims of Bondi shooting

Australian singer John Williamson will perform his fabled song “True Blue” before play on Day 1 of the Adelaide Ashes Test tomorrow as a tribute to the victims of the Bondi shootings.

The performance will take place as the cricket world comes together to mourn the victims of this tragedy, support their families, friends and the Jewish community, and to express its unity.

Todd Greenberg, Cricket Australia CEO, said:

This is a tragic time for all Australians and the thoughts of everyone in the cricket world are with the victims of this terrible event, their families, friends and the Jewish community.

While sport can seem insignificant at times like this, we have the unusual opportunity to bring millions of people together to pay tribute, to console and to contemplate what we want our nation to be.

As John said recently, ‘I believe in a multicultural society, one where all Australians come together in unity to celebrate our unique multicultural nature and freedoms’.

We will continue to look at ways cricket can support and honour those who have been affected by the Bondi shootings and thank those who provided assistance during and since this tragedy.

Premier says she understands response of boos and heckling to her presence at a shule last night

Allan is asked about the boos and heckling she received while attending a ceremony at a Caulfield shule last night. She says she understood why she received “that response”.

The premier goes on:

This is a community that is angry and is grieving. I understand that, and it’s why, as a leader, I show up and show my support, but also then take further action, which is why we’re here today.

We continue to take action every day to not just support the Jewish community, but go to some of the issues that Phil has identified around looking at every opportunity to deal with how you educate the evilness of antisemitism, understand history to help inform the present and build a stronger future.

Jewish leaders welcome funding but want to pursue more long-term solutions

In Victoria, standing with the premier is Elyse Schachna, the president of Zionism Victoria, who says that the announced funding is welcome but “short term”. She says:

It will address the issue short term but, long term, we have a bigger issue in our society to confront, and I’m very glad that the premier acknowledged that we have an issue and a problem of extremism in our state, in our country, and we look forward to seeing what will be put in place … to stamp out this extremism. It will take time, and the Jewish community cannot do it alone.

Phillip Zajac from the Jewish Community Council of Victoria says the Jewish community need “allies” from across Victoria to turn the tide against antisemitism:

We have to educate our way out of this. We need to humanise the Jewish people. We need to share our beautiful traditions. We need to explore the origins of antisemitism.

We need to remember the Holocaust, we need to be understood as Australians who have been here since the First Fleet, and are proud to contribute to this country, change will take time and the Jewish community cannot do it alone.

PM ‘absolutely certain’ Ahmed al-Ahmed will be recognised as a hero

Anthony Albanese has indicated he’ll visit Ahmed al-Ahmed, the man hailed as a hero who tackled one of the alleged gunmen and took the gun out of his hands, who is currently in hospital.

Ahmed, who is in critical but stable condition at St George hospital in Sydney, also received a visit from the NSW premier, Chris Minns, last night.

The PM spoke to Nova Sydney this morning.

He was asked: “Are you planning to visit [Ahmed] and can we expect him to be recognised or rewarded by the country for his bravery?”

Albanese responded: “I am.”

I spoke to the premier after he visited Ahmed yesterday. He told me he’s a great character, and that he had asked about whether I’d be visiting him. He is a hero … I mean, it was extraordinary, that footage of essentially creeping up behind a gunman who’s involved in a mass shooting, and he was unarmed, and as a consequence he was shot twice as well, which is why he is in hospital.

He is a hero and that needs to be recognised and I’m absolutely certain that we will do that.

I sat with his father-in-law. One of the most beloved rabbis is not just in Australia but around the world. He was crying yesterday and said ‘the worst possible thing I would have to do, as a father, I have to sit with my grandchildren and tell them their father has been taken from us’.

His mother is sitting there with a husband who is dead and a son in the ICU.

Rabbi Eli Schlanger mourned by Rabbi Eli Feldman

Rabbi Eli Feldman also spoke about his friend Rabbi Eli Schlanger:

The rabbi was like a brother to me. He has the same name, I studied together with him when we were teenagers.

What he would say right now is do another mitzvah. If you are a Jew, be more Jewish, wear your Star of David, be proud. We will be proud of who we are. Don’t water down your identity for the sake of being scared of what other people will say or do.

In addition, what the rabbi would say is not just for Jews but for every single Australian is be more godly. We are created in the image of God … Care for each other.

Rabbi Eli Feldman says ‘the only way to stamp out darkness is with light’

Rabbi Eli Feldman spoke about the importance of coming together to stamp out hate:

Hanukah, which we are celebrating now, is the celebration of light. We light a candle and another candle. The only way to stamp out darkness is with light. Hatred, bigotry, evil, that is darkness. The Australian people need to combat that with the lights.

No matter the colour of their skin or what they believe, we are all created in the image of God. Every single human being is created in the image of God. Let’s love each other, care about each other.

Ghana forward Albert Adomah reaches 700 EFL games in Walsall’s draw against Shrewsbury – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

Ghanaian forward Albert Adomah chalked a new milestone in his career after making his 700th English Football League appearance.

The winger celebrated the new achievement on his 38th birthday after appearing for Walsall in their game against Shrewsbury in the English League Two.

In his long career in England’s lower leagues, Adomah has made 526 appearances in the Championship and 174 in League Two.

The former Black Stars forward has scored 95 goals and delivered 101 assists across those games.

Although, he reached 700 career appearances in September 2024, he marked that feat in only EFL matches on Saturday in the 1-1 draw against Shrewsbury.

“That’s another milestone. 700 EFL games, I am assuming that’s just league games. That is amazing and it happens to be on my birthday, that’s a nice touch and that’s another milestone to celebrate,” he said after the game.

The 38-year-old has represented several clubs across the two divisions of English football, including Middlesborough and Aston Villa.

Meanwhile, his manager at Walsall, Mat Sadler hailed the veteran forward for his role at the club.

“Happy birthday to him, he’s the youngest 38-year-old I know,” he said.

“He’s an amazing person and he had that chance where he flashed it across to Courtney. That’s the moments that were in the game, we just didn’t quite have that cutting edge at the final moment and sometimes that is understandable with the amount of games we’ve had recently. For now, we have to rest up, look after the lads for a few days and then go again in what has the makings of a very good game this Saturday now.”

Antoine Semenyo returned to the scorers sheet after an eight-game drought to help AFC Bournemouth to a thrilling draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday night.

The Ghana international struck in the first half to level for the Cherries after Amad Diallo had opened the scoring for Manchester United.

However, just before half-time Casemiro scored to put Manchester United in-front again.

The visitors equalised a minute after the break through Evanilson before Marcus Tavernier scored a beautiful freekick to give Bournemouth the lead after 52 minutes.

Bruno Fernandes responded with an equally well-taken freekick with 13 minutes remaining before Matheus Cunha gave United the lead again.

But second-half substitute Eli Junior Kroupi denied United victory with a quick-feet finish to make it 4-4.

Semenyo, who is on the radar of the Red Devils, have now recorded his seventh goal of the season and tenth goal contribution in the Premier League this campaign.

Celebrating legendary Ghanaian filmmaker Kwaw Ansah

0

The name Kwaw Ansah is inseparable from the evolution of filmmaking in Ghana. For decades, he has stood as a towering reference point—not only within Ghana but across the African continent—helping to elevate African cinema to global recognition.

Few Ghanaians have shaped the film, advertising, and mass communication industries with such depth, consistency, and cultural conviction.

Known formally as Kwaw Panyintsir Ansah, he is Ghana’s ultimate benchmark in filmmaking and one of Africa’s most influential creative minds. Straddling film, culture, advertising, and mass communication, Ansah’s career represents a rare fusion of artistic excellence and cultural advocacy.

After returning to Ghana from his studies at London’s Regent Street Polytechnic (1961–1963) and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (1963–1965), Ansah embarked on a creative journey that would earn him the industry’s highest accolade—Living Legend. Everything he touched carried the mark of originality and excellence.

His early creative imprints include iconic textile designs such as “Abankaba” and landmark television commercials like “Signal”, which dominated Ghana’s advertising landscape from the 1960s through the 1970s while he worked with UAC (now Unilever).

Later, through his own agency, Target Saatchi & Saatchi, Ansah produced award-winning commercials including GOIL, Chocolate Spread, and The Lotto Agent.

His globally acclaimed “ABC” television commercial won the prestigious CLIO Award in 1989, making it the first African TV commercial to receive such recognition. In 2003, the Advertising Association of Ghana honoured him with its highest distinction, the Outstanding Personality Award.

It is, however, in filmmaking that Kwaw Ansah’s legacy is most firmly cemented. His masterpieces—Love Brewed in the African Pot, Heritage Africa and the documentary Crossroads of People, Crossroads of Trade defined Ghana’s film industry in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. These works remain the standard against which Ghanaian cinema is measured.

Love Brewed in the African Pot earned multiple international accolades, including:

Jury Prize for Best Director, FESPACO (1981)

Jury’s Special Silver Peacock Award, 8th International Film Festival of India (1981)

OAU Film Prize, the African Union’s first film award

Order of the Nation of Burkina Faso for Arts and Culture (1995)

His subsequent film, Heritage Africa, achieved a historic milestone by winning the Yenenga Grand Prix at FESPACO (1989)—the first film from Anglophone Africa to do so. That same year, it was named Outstanding Film of the Year at the London Film Festival.

Recognizing its cultural significance, the Government of Ghana adopted the film as an official cultural screening for visiting Pan-African delegations.

In 1994, Ansah’s documentary Crossroads of People, Crossroads of Trade, produced for the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board and sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution, won the UNESCO Film Award in France.

Over the years, he expanded his filmography with works such as Harvest at 17, The Golden Stool: Soul of the Asantes, and notable video-format classics including For the Love of AA, Papa Lasisi Bicycle, Suffering to Lose, and Praising the Lord Plus One.

Ansah’s contributions have attracted numerous honours, including the ACRAG Living Legend Award (1998), the Osagyefo Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ghana Academy of Film and Television Arts (2011), and the Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah African Genius Award (2014).

At the continental level, his election as Chairman of the Federation of African Film Makers (FEPACI) in 1995 affirmed Africa’s collective confidence in his vision to tell Africa’s story through cinema.

In 2017, as part of Ghana’s 60th Independence Anniversary, ACRAG again recognized him as a Living Legend.

His venture into broadcasting led to the establishment of TV Africa, widely regarded as the most culturally authentic Ghanaian television station, dedicated to African-centered content.

Perhaps his most enduring gift to the continent is the Bisa Aberwa Museum—a globally acclaimed cultural and tourism monument.

Celebrated for its architecture, collections, and immersive storytelling, it stands as Africa’s leading privately owned museum and won the 2024 Best Visitor Attraction of the Year at both regional and national levels during the National Tourism Awards.

Beyond creative production, Ansah served the nation in public institutions, including as a founding and longest-serving board member of the Ghana Media Commission, the National Commission on Culture, and the School of Performing Arts, University of Ghana.

At 85, Kwaw Ansah takes his greatest pride not in the roomful of trophies amassed over six decades, but in laying them symbolically at the feet of Mother Africa, from whom he draws his inspiration and to whom he dedicates his life’s work.

In recognition of this extraordinary legacy, La Foundation for the Arts (LAFA) proudly presents the LAFA Heritage Honours 2025, celebrating Kwaw Ansah’s pioneering contributions to Ghana’s arts and film industry.

The event, held in partnership with UNESCO, underscores Ghana’s growing prominence in global conversations on heritage, creativity, and cultural memory.

The celebration will feature a Heritage Red Carpet Experience and a curated Kwaw Ansah Exhibition, showcasing film posters, scripts, personal artifacts and rare behind-the-scenes photographs that chronicle his creative journey.

The event takes place on Friday, 19th December 2025, at 6:00 pm prompt, at LAFA Exhibition Space, 144 La Road, Accra.

The Vice President called on all Ministries to champion the implementation of decentralisation The Vice President called on all Ministries to champion the implementation of decentralisation

The Government of Ghana, through the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee (IMCC) Secretariat, on December 10, 2025, convened the maiden meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee (IMCC) on Decentralisation at Adu Lodge, Castle Drive, Accra, under the chairmanship of the Vice President, Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang.

The meeting brought together Ministers, Institutional Heads and key stakeholders mandated under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) to steer the country’s decentralisation reforms.

In her keynote address, the Vice President stressed the Government’s unrelenting commitment to placing decentralisation at the heart of national development and accountable governance.

She highlighted the urgent need to complete administrative and functional devolution in critical sectors such as Health, Education and Roads, noting that the credibility of Ghana’s decentralisation programme depends on progress in these areas.

The meeting deliberated on three key objectives: 1. Reactivation and operationalisation of the IMCC as the highest national platform for inter-ministerial coordination of decentralisation.

2. Consideration and endorsement of the National Decentralisation Policy and Strategy (2026–2030), which outlines reforms across thematic areas: Political, Administrative, Fiscal Planning; Local Economic Development; and Popular Participation and Accountability.

3. Policy direction on critical coordination matters, including predictable financing for the IMCC Secretariat, sectoral alignment, and legislative reforms.

The Vice President called on all Ministries, Departments and Agencies, especially the Ministry of Finance, to champion the implementation of decentralisation reforms within their mandates, stressing that a coherent and purposeful Government stance is vital for attracting Development Partner support and to ensure that funds follow functions.

The meeting featured presentations on the NDPS, Fiscal Decentralisation, Local Economic Development and ongoing legislative reforms, as well as discussions on ministerial realignment for effective local governance.

The IMCC agreed to focus on the Decentralisation of the Education, Health and Road Sectors and to ensure that they are achieved within the first year of the NDPS plan period. In the view of the IMCC, decentralisation must benefit the people of Ghana; therefore, the committee remains committed to ensuring that decentralisation becomes a catalyst for improved service delivery, local democracy and inclusive national development.

Members of the IMCC present at the meeting were the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Head of the Local Government Service, Prof Lord Mensah, the Head of the Civil Service, Dr Evans Aggrey-Darkoh and the Chairperson of the National Development Planning Commission, Dr Nii Moi Thompson.

Manchester United 4-4 Bournemouth: A ‘throwback’ to United’s past on a chaotic night

0

A remarkable, chaotic, mesmerising Premier League thriller at Old Trafford captured the imagination even of the clinical operators in the dugout.

“Really difficult to explain,” said Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola. “But I prefer 4-4 to 0-0.”

“Fun,” was Manchester United counterpart Ruben Amorim’s initial observation.

Analysing for Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher went further.

“The best game of the Premier League season so far,” said the former England and Liverpool defender. “It was almost a throwback to Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United with attacking football.

“It is the best I have seen Man Utd. For the majority of the game, they were absolutely fantastic.

“For the first time under Amorim – and first time in a long time – I felt like I was watching what Man Utd are supposed to be. Wave after wave attack, but the inability to defend has hurt them.”

For the record, Ferguson took charge of two games when United scored four and didn’t win.

The first was a significant factor in his side’s failure to win the 2012 title as United threw away a 4-2 lead and drew 4-4 with Everton at Old Trafford.

The other was Ferguson’s very last match, an extraordinary 5-5 draw at West Brom in 2013.

Amorim has a very long road ahead before he can be compared to Ferguson.

But at least, on a night when his side led twice in the first half, then fought back to get their noses in front again after conceding two in a matter of minutes at the start of the second, and finally had to settle for a point as Bournemouth finished the stronger, he understood what everyone had witnessed.

In a vibrant first half, the hosts’ had the highest non-penalty xG value (2.49), most shots (17) and joint-most touches in the opposition’s box (30) of any side in the opening 45 minutes of a Premier League match this season.

“If you understand a little bit,” Amorim said. “If you follow the club like I follow the Premier League for so long, you [know you] have not just the duty to try to win the games. The way you try to win the games is so important for the fans.

“Of course they are desperate to win, but also, I feel that they are desperate to be inspired when they come to Old Trafford.

“Today was inspiring, I think, also because of Bournemouth. But in the end that’s the feeling of frustration of not winning the game.”

Man United and Bournemouth draw 4-4 in extra ordinary thriller

0

Manchester United and Bournemouth produced a Premier League classic at Old Trafford as both sides led and had to come from behind before settling for a point from an eight-goal thriller.

United’s 2-1 half-time lead evaporated within seven minutes of the restart as Evanilson and Marcus Tavernier struck.

But Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick and Matheus Cunha’s effort within two minutes of each other turned the contest on its head a second time, only for 19-year-old Eli Junior Kroupi to drive home an equaliser six minutes from time to earn Bournemouth a point from a breathless game.

Amid the chaos, it was almost forgotten that Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim had tweaked his favoured five-man defence and been rewarded for pushing Amad Diallo into a more advanced position with the Ivorian heading home from close range after 13 minutes.

The goal came after United had hit the visitors with a blistering start – six shots in the opening 10 minutes being their most so quickly in a Premier League game since October 2022.

As it turned out, it was the prelude to a remarkable contest.

Between them, the two sides had 38 shots. Casemiro picked up a booking that rules him out of Sunday’s trip to Aston Villa. The last significant threats on goal were two stoppage-time efforts from David Brooks that needed reaction saves from Senne Lammens to prevent Bournemouth from clinching victory.

The result cost United a top-five spot, while 13th-placed Bournemouth have now gone seven games without a win.

Man Utd analysis: Formation change from Amorim

Matheus Cunha celebrates scoring Manchester United's fourth goal
Matheus Cunha celebrates scoring Manchester United’s fourth goal

Rarely can any formation have been debated quite as much as Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system.

The former Sporting manager has continually defended the system that brought him such success in Portugal. At one point, he even declared the Pope could not persuade him to change it.

Lately, though, Amorim’s words have softened to a claim he would change if he felt it was the right thing to do.

This was the night.

It was not ‘throw the baby out with the bathwater’ stuff until the final 20 minutes, when Lisandro Martinez came on, and Diogo Dalot went to right-back.

But initially, Amad did not track back as often, and when he did, the Ivory Coast man, who, like Bryan Mbeumo, but not Noussair Mazraoui, was allowed to play so soon before the Africa Cup of Nations, tucked inside Leny Yoro rather than out.

He marked the occasion with a headed goal from close range, and when Casemiro’s tame effort was pushed into his own net by Djordje Petrovic, the home fans responded with a reception at the end of the half as enthusiastic as any at this ground this season.

Little did they know what was to follow.

Bournemouth analysis: Cherries have last word

Bournemouth won 3-0 on their past two visits to Old Trafford.

In all probability, if Cherries’ boss Andoni Iraola had been offered another three goals, he would have taken them, assuming it would be the pathway to another victory and the end of his side’s winless streak.

There was something too easy about how they seized the initiative.

Dalot was lying on the ground clutching his mouth after a collision when Tavernier played a superb pass through to Evanilson for the Brazilian to equalise.

Tavernier then exploited some weak goalkeeping from Lammens to put Bournemouth in front.

United had already profited from some poor keeping by Petrovic when the former Chelsea man palmed Casemiro’s tame first-half header into his goal. Petrovic could do nothing to prevent Bruno Fernandes following Tavernier’s lead by curling his own free-kick home for the equaliser.

With the home fans baying for more, Cunha provided it with a calm finish.

It seemed certain to be the winner – but Bournemouth were not done.

Kroupi’s final flourish ensured they exceeded their previous scoring efforts here, but without gaining the same reward.

It led to a mixture of relief and frustration for both sides at the final whistle as players fell to their knees in exhaustion.

What’s next for these teams?

Manchester United’s next Premier League game is at Aston Villa on Sunday, 21 December (16:30 GMT).

Bournemouth are next in action at home to Burnley on Saturday, 20 December (15:00).

Premier League: Man United and Bournemouth draw in breathless eight-goal thriller

0

There were plenty of thrills and spills as Manchester United and Bournemouth played out an entertaining 4-4 draw at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Monday.

United dominated early and it was Amad Diallo who opened the scoring in his final match before the Africa Cup of Nations.

Antoine Semenyo levelled for the visitors in the 40th minute but Casemiro had Old Trafford rocking as his downward header restored United’s lead in first-half stoppage time.

Bournemouth capitalised on a wild opening seven minutes in the second period with goals from Evanilson and Marcus Tavernier turning the match on its head.

Bruno Fernandes then levelled the match at 3-3 in the 77th minute with a beautiful free-kick that found the top right-hand corner. Two minutes later, United were celebrating again as Matheus Cunha pounced on a Bournemouth deflection to score in front of the Stretford End.

But there was still time for Andoni Iraola’s Cherries to spoil the party as substitute Junior Kroupi struck a superb equaliser in the 84th minute to cap one of Old Trafford’s most chaotic matches ever.

Mohamed Salah wins PFA Players’ Player of the Year for 2024-25

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah was voted the 2024-25 Men’s PFA Players’ Player of the Year. The 33-year-old Egyptian is the first player to win the prestigious award, which is voted by his peers, three times.

Salah was a worthy winner, after scoring 29 goals and creating 18 assists to lead Liverpool to the 2024-25 Premier League title.

“I look at myself now, a guy coming from Egypt and making it to the top level, making history today, it’s something that makes me so proud,” Salah said as he was presented with the award.

He previously won the award for the 2017-18 and 2021-22 Premier League campaigns.

What happened in the FA Community Shield?

Dean Henderson was the hero as he saved multiple Liverpool penalties to lift Crystal Palace to a shootout win in the 2025 FA Community Shield at Wembley on 10 August.

Palace fought back twice against Liverpool to force a 2-2 draw and send the match to penalties where Henderson kept out spot-kicks from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott.

Justin Devenny then wrapped up a 3-2 victory for the Eagles in the penalty shootout.

Before kick-off, tributes were paid to former Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, following their deaths in a tragic car crash in Spain last month.

However, the minute’s silence was cut short after a small number of Palace fans were heard shouting during the ceremony.

Who won the Premier League last season?

The 2024-25 Premier League season was one to savour for the red half of Merseyside as Liverpool were crowned champions. The Reds clinched a record-equalling 20th top flight title – but only their second in the Premier League era – with a convincing 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield back in April.

Liverpool’s success was a dream debut campaign for coach Arne Slot who replaced the legendary German Jurgen Klopp at the helm. Liverpool’s only other Premier League title win came in 2019-20 under Klopp during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Which Premier League teams are playing in Europe this season?

A record nine top-flight clubs qualified for UEFA competitions for the 2025-26 campaign.

However, Palace were demoted from the Europa League to the Conference League on 11 July due to club ownership issues raised by UEFA.

Separately, fans have been warned by the Premier League that this season fixtures could be moved at “relatively short notice” because of the number of English teams playing in Europe.

Germany to play vs. Ghana in March

0

The Germany national team are kicking off preparations for the 2026 World Cup next summer, and another opponent along that path has been revealed. Germany will be playing Ghana in their second friendly of the March international break.

“We are really looking forward to the match against Otto Addo’s team,” said coach Julian Nagelsmann. “Their strong counter-attacking game can give us a taste of what to expect in the World Cup group stage match against Ivory Coast.”

Ghana have qualified for a second consecutive World Cup. They finished bottom of their group in 2022 behind Portugal, South Korea, and Uruguay. However, they are not a side to be trifled with, as they gave all three of their opponents some major problems, even beating the Koreans. This time, Ghana have been drawn with England, Croatia, and Panama.

Germany played Ghana in two successive World Cups in 2010 and 2014. Curiously, they were the only side that Germany did not defeat on the road to the title in 2014. Goals from Mario Götze and Miroslav Klose earned the eventual world champions a 2-2 draw.

As Nagelsmann mentioned, this match is most likely a warm-up for Germany’s group game against Ivory Coast, whom they play in the second match. The friendly will be played in Stuttgart on the 30th of March.

Patrick Agyemang double drives Derby County past Sheffield Wednesday – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

Patrick Agyemang scored twice to drive Derby County to a clear 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Monday night.

The American-Ghanaian striker struck in the 32nd and 62nd minutes, setting the tone for a confident Championship display and giving the travelling fans plenty to cheer.

Derby started with intent and Agyemang led the line with energy and strength. He opened the scoring with a calm left foot finish after Bobby Clark picked him out inside the box. The forward stayed lively, drawing three fouls and battling through heavy pressure even while losing several duels.

After the break, Liam Thompson doubled the lead from close range following a set piece. Agyemang then sealed the result with a sharp right foot strike from the centre of the area, finishing a move that showed Derby’s control.

Sheffield Wednesday enjoyed more of the ball but created little threat. Derby were clinical, posting higher threat and more shots. Agyemang left the pitch late on to applause. Derby now prepare for Portsmouth on December 20.

Why Nicolas Pépé and Adingra were excluded from Ivory Coast squad for AFCON

0

Ivory Coast national team head coach Emerse Faé has defended his decision to omit Nicolas Pépé and Simon Adingra from the squad for the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

According to Faé, the absence of both players was due to a combination of sporting and non-sporting factors considered during the selection process.

Explaining Pépé’s omission, Faé stated that the decision was not related to the player’s on-field performance, noting that he would have been selected based solely on sporting merit. However, the coach indicated that off-the-pitch issues influenced the decision, though he did not disclose specific details.

Ghana to face Germany in pre-World Cup friendly

“If we were to consider only the sporting aspect, he (Pépé) would be with us. To make a list, you have to take into account many factors, both on and off the field. All these factors led to Nico not being on the list,” he told the media, as reported by AfricaSoccer.com.

The 41-year-old former Côte d’Ivoire midfielder also addressed the exclusion of Simon Adingra, who plays for Sunderland, explaining that the winger’s limited playing time at club level was the main reason. Faé noted that, due to the competitive nature of the squad, he decided to give opportunities to other players, as Adingra’s reduced minutes had affected his form.

“Simon is struggling to earn a starting spot at Sunderland. We had to do without his qualities when making our selection,” he said.

Both players played an integral role in Ivory Coast’s triumph at the 2023 AFCON.

The Ivorians will begin their title defence in Group F, where they will face Cameroon, Gabon, and Mozambique in the battle for a place in the knockout stages.

Canada’s Carney called out for ‘utilizing’ British spelling

0

Canadian language experts are calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to ditch British spelling in official documents and utilise Canadian spelling instead.

Canadian English has been the standard in government communications for decades. But eagle-eyed linguists and editors have spotted British spellings — like “globalisation” and “catalyse” — in documents from the Carney government, including the budget.

In an open letter, they asked Carney to stick to Canadian English, writing that it is “a matter of our national history, identity and pride”.

They note that Canadian English is unique because it borrows influence from both the US and the UK due to geography and history.

It also includes “Canadianisms” that are unique to the country’s lexicon, like the use of the word “toque” to describe a winter hat, or “washroom” instead of the American bathroom or the British loo.

A big distinction between Canadian and British spelling is the use of the letter ‘z’ versus ‘s’ in words like analyse. But Canadian English takes from British English in other ways, like using ‘ou’ in colour, rather than the American ‘color’.

Other British terms, however, are never used, like tyre for ‘tire’.

In the letter, dated 11 December and shared with BBC News, the linguists wrote that Canadian English is recognised and widely used in Canada, arguing that “if governments start to use other systems for spelling, this could lead to confusion about which spelling is Canadian.”

They add that using Canadian English is “the simplest way to take an ‘elbows up’ stance”, referencing an ice hockey term that Carney has used to describe Canada’s defiance in the face of US tariffs and 51st state jabs from President Donald Trump.

The letter was sent by Editors Canada and signed by four professors of linguistics at various Canadian universities, along with the editor-in-chief of the Canadian English Dictionary.

The BBC has reached out to Carney’s office for comment.

One of the signatories, Professor Stefan Dollinger at the University of British Columbia, said he and others feel strongly about the issue “because language expresses identity”.

“It seems kind of counter-productive that the Prime Minister’s Office would now walk the clock back by half-a-century or more,” Prof Dollinger told the BBC, noting how Canada’s language has evolved from its past as a British colony.

There were at least two notable uses of British English by Carney’s office, said Kaitlin Littlechild, president of Editors Canada.

The first was the Carney government’s budget, released in November. The second is an October news release from the prime minister’s office after a working visit to Washington, DC, where Carney met Trump.

Ms Littlechild said it is difficult to decipher whether it is a “misunderstanding” or a “targeted directive”.

JK Chambers, a prominent Canadian linguist at the University of Toronto and another signatory, noted that Carney spent many years of his adult life in the UK, including seven years as governor of the Bank of England.

“He obviously picked up some pretensions while he was there,” Prof Chambers said via email, but added: “So far, bless him, he has not resorted to ‘gaol’ for ‘jail.'”

Executive influence eroding Parliament’s independence – Prof. Oquaye

0

Former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye, has attributed the declining oversight role of Parliament to excessive executive influence and political patronage, warning that the current system incentivises loyalty to the Presidency over accountability.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Monday, December 15, Prof. Oquaye argued that many Members of Parliament from the governing party prioritise personal political advancement ahead of their constitutional duties.

According to him, MPs increasingly focus on attracting presidential attention in the hope of securing ministerial appointments, rather than scrutinising government actions.

“No wonder Parliament cannot be a check on the executive. The Member of Parliament whose party is in power is more anxious to catch the eye of the President to become a Minister than to catch the eye of the Speaker,” he said.

Prof. Oquaye noted that this dynamic has weakened legislative engagement, contributing to low attendance and ineffective scrutiny of executive power.

“No wonder most of the time, Parliament is virtually empty. Because the system has no counter-vailing mechanisms,” he added.

He explained that the concentration of power around the Presidency has distorted incentives within Parliament, with lawmakers directing their energies toward Jubilee House rather than their oversight responsibilities.

“And you find everybody looking towards the one and only source, that is the Jubilee House,” Prof. Oquaye stated.

The former Speaker warned that without deliberate structural reforms to strengthen Parliament’s independence, the imbalance between the legislature and the executive will persist, further eroding democratic accountability.

His comments have reignited debate about the need for reforms to insulate Parliament from executive dominance and restore its role as an effective check on government power.

A large turnout from his family members, colleagues from the industry, fans, and well-wishers came to pay their last respects and honour one of Ghana’s finest musicians.

However, during the lying to rest and the filing past, mourners noticed that Daddy Lumba’s face was partially covered with what appeared to be a net-like material.

This led many individuals to raise concerns on social media, resulting in divided feelings and terror about the event.

Some expressed curiosity over the fact that Daddy Lumba’s face was not fully visible, and others questioned why his face wasn’t obvious.

Numerous individuals went online in an attempt to speculate whether or not it was truly Daddy Lumba who was lying in state, questioning the condition of the body in the casket.

Many even went so far as to post the assertion that it was a dummy of Daddy Lumba versus an actual body, which has created a significant amount of debate and emotional responses among fans of Daddy Lumba’s music.

As these conversations continued to create discussions online, one of Daddy Lumba’s sisters, Faustina Fosu, came with clarification regarding the situation.

Lumba’s sister explained why his face covered

Faustina Fosu has said that she witnessed her brother before his burial and confirmed that he was indeed Daddy Lumba, and that he looked very peaceful and died with dignity, contrary to claims of an unusual death.

Faustina further stated that the reason for covering Daddy Lumba’s face was not a mistake. She disclosed that Daddy Lumba specified in his will that he did not want anyone to see his face when he was laid to rest.

Faustina believes Daddy Lumba valued privacy and would prefer if his body were not displayed publicly, but the family decided to allow family and friends to pay their respects to avoid needless speculation and controversy.

Faustina stated that the family followed the wishes of the late musician when making their decisions.

The family respects Daddy Lumba’s wishes first, so they covered his face to show their respect for his final request.

Watch the video of Faustina Fosu’s explanation below:

Ultimately, the family would like the public to concentrate on honouring Daddy Lumba’s musical achievements and the significant impact he had on highlife music in Ghana, rather than on speculation about Daddy Lumba’s burial.

‘Bandits’ kidnap worshippers during church service in Nigeria

Armed men have kidnapped at least 13 people from a church in Nigeria’s central Kogi state – the second such attack in as many weeks.

The attackers stormed into Evangelical Church Winning All in the mainly rural farming district of Aaaaz-Kiri during Sunday morning service, opening fire and then abducting some of the congregants.

Five of the gunmen were killed, according to Kogi state’s information commissioner, Kingley Fanwo, but he said others managed to escape despite being wounded.

Officials describe the assailants as “bandits” – a term used locally for criminal gangs who typically kidnap people for ransom.

Only two weeks ago, gunmen raided a church in the nearby town of Ejiba, kidnapping a pastor, his wife and several church members.

They are still being held, despite efforts by security agencies to secure their release, local residents say.

“The security onslaught in neighbouring Niger and Kwara states is pushing the bandits more towards Kogi state,” Fanwo told the BBC.

These latest incidents underline Nigeria’s persistent insecurity, particularly in parts of the north-western and central regions, where armed criminal gangs have carried out a wave of mass abductions, attacks on villages, and assaults on places of worship in recent weeks.

The biggest of these saw more than 250 children and 12 members of staff reportedly kidnapped from St Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Niger state, at the end of November.

The Nigerian government had claimed that jihadist groups Boko Haram and Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) were to blame in most cases, but this has been disputed by analysts who tell the BBC they were committed by criminal gangs.

In recent weeks, President Bola Tinubu has ordered security chiefs to step up intelligence-led operations to curb kidnappings and approved the deployment of extra troops and police to known hotspots.

Authorities also say joint military and police task forces have recorded successes in dismantling some armed groups. Yet the attacks continue largely unabated, especially in rural communities where security presence is thin and response times are slow.

Epstein’s UK flights had alleged British abuse victims on board, BBC finds

Epstein took dozens more flights to the UK than were previously known

Almost 90 flights linked to Jeffrey Epstein arrived at and departed from UK airports, some with British women on board who say they were abused by the billionaire, a BBC investigation has found.

We have established that three British women who were allegedly trafficked appear in Epstein’s records of flights in and out of the UK and other documents related to the convicted sex offender.

US lawyers representing hundreds of Epstein victims told the BBC it was “shocking” that there has never been a “full-scale UK investigation” into his activities on the other side of the Atlantic.

The UK was one of the “centrepieces” of Epstein’s operations, one said.

Testimony from one of these British victims helped convict Epstein’s accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell of child sex-trafficking in the US in 2021. But the victim has never been contacted by UK police, her Florida-based lawyer Brad Edwards told the BBC.

The woman, given the name Kate in the trial, was listed as having been on more than 10 flights paid for by Epstein in and out of the UK between 1999 and 2006.

The BBC is not publishing further details about the women in the documents because of the risk this might identify them.

US lawyer Sigrid McCawley said the British authorities have “not taken a closer look at those flights, at where he was at, who he was seeing at those moments, and who was with him on those planes, and conducted a full investigation”.

US Attorney's Office SDNY Epstein, a man with grey hair and glasses perched on his head, sitting on a bench outside a log cabin on the Balmoral estate, wearing a pale sweatshirt. More information has emerged about Epstein, pictured here with Maxwell, and his UK links

Under the Jeffrey Epstein Transparency Act, the deadline to release all US government files on the sex-offender financier is Friday.

But the flight logs were among thousands of documents from court cases and Epstein’s estate which have been already made public over the past year, revealing more about his time in the UK, such as trips to royal residences.

The BBC examined these documents as part of an investigation trying to piece together Epstein’s activities in the UK.

It revealed that:

  • The incomplete flight logs and manifests record 87 flights linked to Epstein – dozens more than were previously known – arriving or departing from UK airports between the early 1990s and 2018
  • Unidentified “females” were listed among the passengers travelling into and out of the UK in the logs
  • Fifteen of the UK flights took place after Epstein’s 2008 conviction for soliciting sex from a minor, which should have raised questions from immigration officials

Although Epstein died in jail in 2019, before his trial on charges of trafficking minors for sex, legal experts have told the BBC a UK investigation could reveal whether British-based people enabled his crimes.

Two months ago the BBC sent the Metropolitan Police, which has previously examined allegations about Epstein’s activities in Britain, publicly available information about the UK flights with suspected trafficking victims on board.

Later, we sent the Met a detailed list of questions about whether it would investigate evidence of possible British victims of Epstein trafficked in and out of the UK.

The Met did not respond to our questions. On Saturday, it released a broader statement saying that it had “not received any additional evidence that would support reopening the investigation” into Epstein and Maxwell’s trafficking activities in the UK.

“Should new and relevant information be brought to our attention”, including any resulting from the release of material in the US, “we will assess it”, the Met said.

Sigrid McCawley, a woman with wavey blond hair and wearing a black dress, pictured in close-up in an office, looking to the left of the camera, with the background out of focus.

Sigrid McCawley, who represents hundreds of Epstein victims, criticised the Met for declining to investigate

US lawyer Brad Edwards, who has been representing Epstein victims since 2008, told us “three or four” of his clients are British women “who were abused on British soil both by Jeffrey Epstein and others”.

Other victims were recruited in the UK, trafficked to the United States and abused there, he said.

Mr Edwards said he is also representing women of other nationalities who say they were trafficked to the UK for abuse by Epstein and others.

Our analysis shows Epstein used commercial and chartered flights, as well as his private planes, to travel to the UK and to arrange transport for others, including alleged trafficking victims.

More than 50 of the flights involved his private jets, mostly flying to and from Luton Airport, with several flights at Birmingham International Airport, and one arrival and departure each at RAF Marham in west Norfolk and at Edinburgh Airport.

Limited records of commercial and chartered flights taken by Epstein, or paid for by him, show dozens more journeys, mainly via London Heathrow, but also Stansted and Gatwick.

In a number of the logs of Epstein’s private planes, including some detailing trips to the UK, women on the flight are identified only as unnamed “females”.

A graphic showing entries in a page of the Epstein flight logs with airport codes in one column, the flight number in another and a column with notes which includes details of the passengers in most cases and the word "reposition" in two cases. The names of the people on board have been redacted, except for the initials JE and GM - Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell - on all of the flights with passengers named. One note is highlighted, with the text spelling out that the cramped handwriting says simply "1 FEMALE".

“He’s absolutely choosing airports where he feels it will be easier for him to get in and out with victims that he’s trafficking,” said Ms McCawley.

Private aircraft did not have to provide passenger details to UK authorities before departure in the same way as commercial aircraft during the period covered by the documents we examined. The Home Office told us they were “not subject to the same centralised record-keeping”.

That loophole was only closed in April last year.

Kate, the British woman who testified against Maxwell, was on some of the commercial flights in the records we examined. She described in court that she had been 17 when Maxwell befriended her and introduced her to Epstein – who then sexually abused her at Maxwell’s central London home.

In the 2021 trial, she described how Maxwell gave her a schoolgirl outfit to wear and asked her to find other girls for Epstein. As well as the dozen flights to and from the UK, Kate told the court she had been flown to Epstein’s island in the US Virgin Islands, New York and Palm Beach in Florida, where she says the abuse continued into her 30s.

Kate, pictured on the right with her face blurred, testified at Maxwell’s trial

Mr Edwards, her lawyer, told BBC News that even after that testimony, Kate has “never been asked” by any UK authorities any questions about her experience – “not even a phone call”.

He said that if British police were to launch an investigation into Epstein’s activities and his enablers, Kate would be happy to help.

Prof Bridgette Carr, a human-trafficking expert at the University of Michigan Law School, said trafficking cases usually require many people working together.

“It’s never just one bad person,” she said. “You don’t think about the accountant and the lawyer and the banker – or all the bankers – and all these people that had to implicitly, and sometimes explicitly, be OK with what was happening for it to continue.”

There are also questions about how Epstein was able to travel freely to the UK after his 2008 conviction for soliciting a minor for sex, which meant he had to register as a sex offender in Florida, New York and the US Virgin Islands.

Epstein was released from prison in 2009 after serving 13 months. Documents suggest Epstein took a Virgin Atlantic flight from the US to London Heathrow in September 2010, just two months after he completed his probation on house arrest.

A graph showing the number of Epstein-related flights to the UK by year, starting at one flight a year in the early 1990s and sometimes rising, sometimes falling until it reaches a peak of 17 flights in 2006. There is a gap then until after his release from prison in 2009, when there are 15 flights scattered among the years up until 2018.

Home Office rules at the time said foreign nationals who received a prison sentence of 12 months or more should, in most cases, have been refused entry.

But immigration lawyer Miglena Ilieva, managing partner at ILEX Law Group, told us that US citizens did not usually require a UK visa for short stays, so there was no application process where they would be asked about criminal convictions.

“It was very much at the discretion of the individual immigration officer who would receive this person at the border,” she said.

The Home Office said it does not hold immigration and visa records beyond 10 years and added “it is longstanding government policy that we do not routinely comment on individual cases”.

During the 1980s, Epstein also used a foreign passport – issued in Austria with his picture and a false name – to enter the UK as well as France, Spain and Saudi Arabia, according to US authorities.

Epstein also listed London as his place of residence in 1985, when he applied for a replacement passport, ABC News has previously reported.

Brad Edwards says his British client Kate has never been contacted by UK police

In its statement on Saturday, the Met said it had contacted “several other potential victims” when it examined 2015 allegations by Virginia Giuffre that she had been trafficked for sexual exploitation by Epstein and Maxwell.

Ms Giuffre also said she was forced to have sex with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor on three occasions, including when she was 17 at Maxwell’s home in London, in 2001. The former prince has consistently denied the allegations against him.

The Met said its examination of Ms Giuffre’s claims “did not result in any allegation of criminal conduct against any UK-based nationals” and it concluded that “other international authorities were best placed to progress these allegations”.

That decision was reviewed in August 2019 and again in 2021 and 2022 with the same result, it said.

But for lawyer Sigrid McCawley, the message the Met is sending to victims is “that if you come to law enforcement and this is a powerful person you’re reporting on… it will not get investigated.”

Lithium deal unfair to Ghana

0

Former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye, has raised concerns over the lithium mining agreement between Ghana and Barari DV Ghana Limited, questioning the fairness of the royalty framework underpinning the deal.

His comments come after the government withdrew the revised lithium agreement from Parliament on December 10 to allow for further consultations with key stakeholders.

The withdrawal followed objections from the Majority in Parliament, which argued that the 10 per cent royalty rate negotiated by the Akufo-Addo administration contravenes the Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Act, 2010, which sets a 5 per cent royalty for such concessions.

Speaking in an interview with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Monday, December 15, Prof. Oquaye said the debate should go beyond whether the royalty is set at 10 per cent or 5 per cent.

He argued that the existing royalty cap has long disadvantaged the country, especially in the exploitation of valuable natural resources.

According to him, it is troubling that Ghana continues to accept royalty limits that restrict the country to a maximum of 5 per cent, despite the high value of minerals such as lithium, gold, diamonds and bauxite.

Prof. Oquaye suggested that Ghana should negotiate for significantly higher minimum royalties to better protect national interests and ensure fair returns from mineral extraction.

Prof. Oquaye stated, “The present withdrawal is quite interesting. Because some people have viewed it in the context of the royalty percentage, from 10% to 5%. But this 5% has existed for some time.

“It’s very painful to envisage that we have something that has got value. Then we say, when you take this commodity, which has got value, don’t give me more than 5%. But give me anything 5% downwards. That is what the cap means, and who does that? Honestly, we have not been fair to our nation at all. In terms of these gold, diamond, and bauxite matters at all. You can say I want at least 20%.”

The lithium agreement, originally laid before Parliament by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, relates to the mining of lithium and other minerals at Mankessim in the Central Region.

The agreement was revised after Barari DV Ghana Limited requested changes to the lease terms, citing a sharp decline in global lithium prices that has affected the commercial viability of the project.

French court jails Congo ex-rebel leader for 30 years

Congolese ex-rebel leader Roger Lumbala was found guilty by a Paris court on Monday of complicity in crimes against humanity committed during the Second Congo War and was sentenced to 30 years in prison, an official said.

The trial has been hailed by international justice advocates as a milestone in expanding accountability for the conflict that left millions dead.

Announcing the verdict, court President Marc Sommerer said Lumbala was found guilty of ordering or aiding and abetting torture and inhumane crimes, summary executions, rape constituting torture, sexual slavery, forced labour, theft and pillage.

The allegations concerned a military operation known as “Erasing the Board,” carried out in 2002 and 2003 in northeastern Congo by the Movement for the Liberation of the Congo and Rally for Congolese Democracy-National (RCD-N), a Uganda-backed group led at the time by Lumbala.

The operation targeted members of the Nande and Bambuti groups, accused of supporting a rival militia.

Defence lawyer Hugues Vigier declined to comment after Monday’s verdict.

MORE THAN 5 MILLION DEAD

The Second Congo War ran from 1998 to 2003. It involved nine countries and killed more than 5 million people, including many who died of hunger and disease.

While some individuals have been tried at the International Criminal Court for crimes committed during the war, Lumbala’s trial marked the first time a Congolese national has been tried before a national court in connection with the conflict.

Lumbala was arrested in January 2021 under France’s “universal jurisdiction” law, which allows French courts to seek justice related to crimes against humanity committed abroad.

Lumbala refused to testify in the trial, which began last month, questioning the legitimacy of the French court. He attended the verdict.

Yasmine Chubin, legal director of the Clooney Foundation for Justice, which was involved in the trial as a civil party, said using national courts for such cases would allow for arrests of suspects beyond the handful sought by the ICC.

Interior Ministry petitioned over custodial death, demands mandatory budget for detainee meals

0

A legal activist, Frank Quaye, has filed a formal petition with the Ministry of the Interior, demanding urgent action after the reported death of a detainee from starvation and assault in police custody, and calling for a permanent budgetary solution to feed all detainees nationwide.

The petition, dated December 12 and addressed to the Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, follows the death of 28-year-old Mr. Kweku at the Techimantia police station in the Ahafo Region.

Citing reports from Crime Check TV GH, the petition alleges Mr. Kweku died after being assaulted and denied food for at least a day, a case the document describes as a “stark symptom of a grave and systemic failure.”

Quaye’s petition makes two core demands: an independent investigation into the death and, more fundamentally, the immediate creation of a “specific, non-discretionary, and ring-fenced budgetary allocation” within the Ghana Police Service estimates to provide food for every person held in police cells.

He argues that the state’s current practice of relying on detainees’ families for food is unlawful and violates constitutional guarantees of human dignity under Article 15.

“The recurring excuse of ‘lack of resources’ is constitutionally indefensible when the fundamental right to life and dignity is violated,” Quaye states in the document.

He further warns that the absence of a dedicated budget line makes the state’s duty of care subject to the discretion of officers, a practice that “has now proven fatal.”

Legal activist, Frank Quaye

The activist calls on the Interior Minister to champion the budgetary change in the upcoming national budget and to engage the Police Council, whose mandate includes advising on police budgeting.

“The death of Mr. Kweku must be the final catalyst for systemic change,” the petition concludes.

Copies of the petition have been sent to the Presidency, the Finance Ministry, Parliament, the Police Council, CHRAJ, the IGP, and the Ghana Bar Association, seeking broad institutional pressure for reform.

Kennedy Agyapong Jabs Bawumia Ahead of NPP Primaries

0

  • The former MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has slammed his main rival in the NPP flagbearer race slated for January 31, 2026
  • He accused the former Vice President of being behind all the insults against him by some leading members of the party
  • Kennedy Agyapong, who is campaigning to be elected as the NPP’s flagbearer, made these remarks in an interview with UTV

Flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, has jabbed his main opponent in the presidential primary, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking to UTV on Monday, December 15, 2025, as part of his campaign activities, Kennedy Agyapong said Dr Bawumia, who is Ghana’s immediate past Vice President, does not exist in his life.

Kennedy Agyapong, a former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, made these remarks when he was asked if he harbours any hatred for Dr Bawumia

“I don’t care about him. In my life, he doesn’t exist because, if he existed, I would have committed a crime. That’s how I see myself,” he said.

The experienced politician and businessman also slammed the former vice president for emboldening his supporters, including the Bono regional chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC, to insult him.

“He’s the one behind all the things Abronye and the rest were doing against me. I just don’t want to say anything. He [Bawumia] is the one behind all the insults against me. One day, there was an incident at President Akufo-Addo’s house. I mentioned a certain man’s name; no one was there, however, when we left, they posted about it the next day,” he added.

Kennedy Agyapong cautions against primary rigging

Meanwhile, Kennedy Agyapong has sent a strong warning to the leadership of the NPP ahead of the flagbearer race, scheduled for January 31, 2026.

He claimed some members of the party are conniving with officers of the Electoral Commission (EC) to rig the presidential primary for Dr Bawumia.

He consequently vowed to resist any attempt to rig the forthcoming election, adding that any attempt to use the party’s internal security to intimidate his people would be fiercely countered.

“I believe in the structures, but I know of the last-minute meetings they held with officers of the EC. They are planning to use party security to beat my people, but I promise them, they will run on that day,” he vowed.

When asked if he would campaign for Bawumia in the event that he loses the flagbearer election, Kennedy Agyapong said he campaigned for him in 2024 after the November 2023 presidential primary.

“The last time, didn’t I campaign for him? After the election, he could have called to say thank you. They rather insulted me. They were insulting me,” he added.

Adwoa Safo kicks against Kennedy Agyapong’s candidacy

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that Sarah Adwoa Safo, the former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, had kicked against Kennedy Agyapong’s candidacy in the NPP flagbearer race.

Speaking to NPP delegates, she said the presidential aspirant has a bad history of using intemperate language on women, including herself.

Adwoa Safo consequently urged NPP delegates to reject Kennedy Agyapong in the party’s flagbearer race.

Ghana’s political polarisation undermining national cohesion – Prof. Oquaye

0

Former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye, has raised concerns about growing political polarisation in Ghana, warning that it poses a threat to national cohesion and the rule of law.

Speaking in an interview with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Monday, December 15, Prof. Oquaye said the country has become excessively divided and needs a deliberate national agenda to address the situation.

He noted that although many national issues are fundamentally legal in nature, they are often handled along political lines, a practice he said undermines confidence in the rule of law and is unhealthy for society.

Prof. Oquaye said, “Ghana is too polarised. Some people must sit and have an agenda on how to deal with this polarisation and forge national cohesion. Because there are so many matters that are purely legal. But you will find that we are still tempted to go the political way. To the disadvantage that we all want the rule of law to prevail. It is not good for a society.”

According to him, tackling polarisation requires the involvement of experienced individuals who have held public office and understand the consequences of deepening political divisions.

“We cannot go on like this,” he stressed, adding that even traditionally unifying activities such as football no longer serve as common ground for Ghanaians.

Prof. Oquaye further argued that the political space must be structured to accommodate different levels of participation, allowing various groups to engage meaningfully in governance.

He warned that failure to broaden political inclusion could lead to frustration and desperation within the political process, ultimately harming national unity.

“That should be a complete agenda that needs to be looked at by men and women who have tasted office and know what is happening, and they feel something must change. We cannot go on like this. Take football as an example, it’s no longer uniting us… That is the reality, and we must change.

“Political space must be such that different layers must be available for different categories of people to play. It’s important; otherwise, it brings frustration and desperation in the political process,” he stated.

Singer Trey Songz arrested after alleged altercation at New York nightclub

R&B singer Trey Songz has been arrested in New York following an alleged assault involving a nightclub employee in Manhattan’s Times Square area.

The 41-year-old artiste, whose real name is Tremaine Aldon Neverson, was taken into custody after an early-morning incident at Dramma Night Club on December 4.

Prosecutors told a Manhattan criminal court that the singer became “needlessly irate” after a staff member informed him the venue was closing around 4:25 a.m. During the confrontation, Neverson is accused of punching the worker in the face.

Neverson appeared in court on Sunday, where he was formally arraigned on an assault charge stemming from the nightclub incident.

He also faces a separate charge of second-degree criminal mischief related to an unrelated episode later that morning at Mira, a Manhattan restaurant and hookah lounge.

According to court filings, the second incident allegedly involved the destruction of approximately $1,500 worth of property, including hookahs, DJ equipment and furniture.

The singer was released on his own recognizance and appeared in court wearing a black face mask. Prosecutors requested, and the court granted, an order of protection for the nightclub employee. Authorities noted that Neverson is a frequent patron of the establishment.

His lawyer, Mitchell Schuster, disputed the prosecution’s account, saying the situation escalated after his client was provoked. “The incident began when Trey was confronted by individuals who instigated a confrontation and attempted to surround him,” Schuster said in a statement.

He added that Neverson’s security team stepped in to defuse the situation. “His security intervened to protect him and contain the situation, and an altercation occurred in the ensuing confusion,” Schuster said. “Despite being the target of the initial provocation, Trey was arrested.”

Schuster also suggested his client was unfairly targeted due to his public profile. “Public figures are often treated as targets for instigation in pursuit of headlines or financial gain,” he said, adding that the singer is “cooperating fully in both matters” and remains confident that “the full context and facts will come to light.”

The judge granted Neverson supervised release, citing his prior legal history as a concern, and ordered him to return to court on February 18.

NDC confident despite NPP lead in Global InfoAnalytics polls

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed confidence in its prospects ahead of the December 30, 2025, parliamentary rerun in Kpandai, citing lessons learned from past elections in constituencies such as Ablekuma North and Akwatia.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Monday, December 15, Deputy Director of Elections for the NDC, Mahdi Jibril, said the party has implemented proactive measures to ensure a fair and transparent election process.

He urged all stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission (EC), to draw lessons from previous reruns to guarantee smooth polling that adheres to constitutional guidelines.

“Ablekuma North will be a guide for all of us as a political party. What happened in Ablekuma North is similar to what happened in Kpandai. In fact, the same thing happened in Akwatia. I believe the EC will engage us and ensure there are no challenges, but as a party, we will do extra to ensure we don’t repeat the same issues,” he stated.

The rerun follows a court ruling nullifying the initial Kpandai election results, setting the stage for a high-stakes contest between the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

A recent Global InfoAnalytics poll, released on Sunday, December 14, 2025, shows NPP candidate Matthew Nyimdam leading with 50 percent support, narrowly ahead of NDC candidate Daniel Nsala Wakpal, who has 46 percent. Independent candidate Donkor Eric Nipani is projected at 1 percent, while 3 percent of respondents remain undecided.

Both parties have intensified campaign efforts, crisscrossing the constituency to mobilize supporters and prepare voters, highlighting the significance of this closely watched rerun.
