GFA Club Licensing Manager Esme Mends outlines new requirements for 2025/26 season

0

The Ghana Football Association’s Club Licensing Manager, Esme Mends, has shed light on the updated licensing regulations ahead of the 2025/26 football season, urging clubs to adhere to new standards aimed at improving the matchday experience and television appeal.

Speaking in an interview with Ghanasportspage.com, Mends revealed that the GFA has already communicated the new requirements to clubs a month ago, giving them ample time to prepare.

“We made changes regarding licensing regulations and we have informed the clubs. We have also given them enough time to prepare. I sent everything to them about a month ago,” Mends explained.

He mentioned that the key changes include improvements to stadium surroundings, with a focus on visual aesthetics for broadcasting.

“Some spectator stands are bushy. So we want the clubs to either erect proper stands or clear the area so it will look good on TV.”

He also emphasized on enhancing stadium facilities and ensuring order during games.

“VIP, VVIP lounges, and no hawkers allowed are the things we have communicated to them.”

Mends acknowledged the financial challenges many clubs are currently facing, which could hinder compliance in some areas.

“Club licensing is about money, and unfortunately, we are at a point where clubs are facing financial difficulties. So if they don’t have it, they don’t have it.”

The Club Licensing’s new requirements align with the GFA’s commitment to raising the standards of local football infrastructure, ensuring both players and fans enjoy a professional and appealing matchday environment.

Below is what Esme Mends said in Ghanaian Language during an interview with Martin Tawiah:

P Diddy ‘not guilty’ of sex trafficking but may face jail term

Sean 'Diddy' Combs had pleaded 'not-guity' to all charges Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs had pleaded ‘not-guity’ to all charges

Hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs has been found guilty on two counts of ‘transportation to engage in prostitution’ but acquitted of the more serious charges of ‘racketeering conspiracy’ and ‘sex trafficking’ by a federal jury in Manhattan on July 2, 2025.

The split verdict marks a partial victory for Combs, who faced the possibility of life in prison if convicted on all counts.

The jury, composed of eight men and four women, deliberated for three days before reaching their decision.

Combs, 55, was convicted under the Mann Act, which criminalises transporting individuals across state lines for prostitution.

Each count carries a maximum sentence of 10 years, meaning he could face up to 20 years in prison, though legal experts suggest a significantly shorter sentence is more likely.

Key Charges and Why the Jury Rejected the Most Serious Counts

1. Racketeering (RICO) Conspiracy – Not Guilty

Prosecutors alleged that Combs ran a criminal enterprise involving kidnapping, bribery, and forced labor. However, the jury found insufficient evidence to tie him to a coordinated criminal operation.

The defense successfully argued that his business dealings were legitimate and that key witnesses, including ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, stayed in relationships with him voluntarily.

2. Sex Trafficking – Not Guilty

The jury was not convinced that Ventura and another woman, referred to as “Jane,” were coerced into participating in drug-fueled “freak-offs” with male escorts.

Text messages showing the women’s apparent enthusiasm for the encounters significantly weakened the prosecution’s claim of coercion.

3. Transportation for Prostitution – Guilty

The convictions stem from evidence that Combs arranged travel and payments for male sex workers involved in the encounters.

Prosecutors emphasised Combs’ use of drugs (including ketamine and ecstasy) and his financial control over the women to secure their compliance.

Combs remains in custody pending a judge’s decision on bail. Prosecutors are opposing his release, citing his history of witness intimidation and drug use, while his lawyers have proposed a $1 million bond.

Sentencing is expected later this year.

Effective collaboration key to tackling leakages in oil and gas – PHDC Deputy CEO

Deputy CEO of Petroleum Development Corporation, Onasis Rosely Kobby Deputy CEO of Petroleum Development Corporation, Onasis Rosely Kobby

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Operations and Technical Services at the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC), Onasis Rosely, has called for national policy alignment and robust collaboration among stakeholders in the oil and gas industry to address systemic leakages and ensure an efficient measurement framework.

Delivering the keynote address at the inaugural Oil and Gas Measurement Summit on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, Rosely highlighted the critical correlation between precise metering systems and effective revenue generation. He stressed that regulators in the petroleum sector must prioritise efficiency in product evaluation.

Rosely advocated for sustained engagement and commitment from oil and gas companies and regulators to align on a shared vision for efficient metering in the transportation and processing of oil and gas products.

“Inaccurate or inconsistent metering practices create gaps—deep gaps—that result in revenue losses, regulatory infractions, and an erosion of trust. As we pursue energy security and industrial growth, we cannot afford these leakages—not in our pipelines, and certainly not in our governance.

“We need more than equipment. We need policy alignment, capacity building, and collaborative oversight. We must create an ecosystem where the regulator, the investor, the operator, and the consumer all speak the same language of measurement—one that is consistent, verified, and trusted.

“This is where your collective expertise comes in. The knowledge being shared over the course of this summit—on technology trends, calibration protocols, metering infrastructure, data integration, and more—must not end in this room. It must find expression in policy, in operations, and in how we train our people.”

On behalf of the PHDC, Rosely reaffirmed the Corporation’s commitment to adhering strictly to international standards and protocols in the installation of metering systems for the Petroleum Hub project.

He elaborated, “In its mission to develop the Petroleum Hub, the PHDC will establish robust frameworks, expertise, and technologies essential for the precise and effective measurement of oil and gas products.”

Rosely further stated, “At the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation, our vision is unequivocal: to position Ghana as a competitive, integrated petroleum and petrochemical hub in the region. This ambition hinges on strengthening the foundations of efficiency—particularly through metering and measurement systems that meet global standards.”

“As we develop critical infrastructure—refineries, storage facilities, pipelines, and ports—we must concurrently establish frameworks, expertise, and technologies to ensure accurate product measurement and equitable value exchange,” he affirmed.

The day-long summit was attended by the Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy, Hon. Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, along with other committee members and key stakeholders from Ghana’s oil and gas sector.

Why Jude Bellingham won’t face his brother at Club World Cup

0

Real Madrid will lock horns with Borussia Dortmund in the quarterfinals of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

This highly anticipated matchup is scheduled to take place on July 6, 2025, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

The game will be a rematch of the 2024 Champions League final, where Madrid won a record-extending 15th title after beating the German side 2-0 at Wembley Stadium.

Real Madrid, led by new manager Xabi Alonso, secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Juventus at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, thanks to a solo goal from rising striker Gonzalo García.

This win booked their spot in the quarterfinals of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

Gonzalo García’s solo goal proved enough for Real Madrid to beat Juventus 1-0 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, with García now scoring three goals in the tournament.

He filled the gap left by Kylian Mbappé, who made his first appearance off the bench after recovering from acute gastroenteritis.

In a separate match at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Borussia Dortmund edged out Monterrey 2-0, with Serhou Guirassy scoring a brace assisted by Karim Adeyemi.

Hours later, at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, a brace from Serhou Guirassy helped Dortmund beat Mexican side Monterrey. Both goals were assisted by Karim Adeyemi.

German Berterame pulled one back in the second half, but Nico Kovac’s side held on to sail through to the quarters.

The Real Madrid matchup against Dortmund could have had a different touch to it had both Bellingham brothers been available to play.

However, the younger brother, Jobe Bellingham, will be suspended for the quarter-final game this weekend.

According to FIFA’s rules, a player who receives yellow cards in two different games will face an automatic one-match suspension.

However, these yellow cards are reset after the quarterfinals, meaning players won’t miss the final due to accumulated yellows unless they receive a red card in the semifinals.

If a player has a yellow card before the quarterfinals and picks up another in the quarterfinals, they’ll miss the semifinals.

For example, Jude Bellingham isn’t directly mentioned but if a player like Jude Bellingham’s teammate Jobe picked up a second yellow card in the Round of 16 against Monterrey, he would miss the quarterfinals.

His other booking came in their last group game against Ulsan HD.

The 19-year-old signed for the Yellow Wall on June 10, following in his brother’s footsteps.

The older Bellingham made 92 appearances for Dortmund, where he developed into one of the most sought-after midfielders in the world before Real Madrid came knocking.

Jobe was fresh from an impressive campaign with Sunderland, where he starred in the team that earned promotion back to the Premier League.

The event brought together a diverse network of investors, development partners, government agencies, and private sector leaders to collaboratively shape the future of the continent’s food systems.

Themed, “Enhancing Value Chain Investment to Improve Food Systems”, the forum serves as a dynamic platform for sharing actionable insights, showcasing innovative investment models, and fostering impactful partnership

Speaking at the event, Executive Director for GBHub Africa, Nelson Amo, emphasised the importance of investing in Africa’s food systems, not as an end but as a pathway to job creation, improved nutrition, and reduced food imports.

‘Your useless embassy makes more in an hour’ – Netizens blast Jon Benjamin over ‘attack’ on Duncan-Williams

0

A photo collage of John Benjamin and Nicholas Duncan-Williams A photo collage of John Benjamin and Nicholas Duncan-Williams

Some social media users, especially on X, have lambasted former British High Commissioner to Ghana, Jon Benjamin, over a comment he made about Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, the leader and founder of Action Chapel International a global Charismatic Christian church headquartered in Accra.

Jon Benjamin had criticised Archbishop Duncan-Williams over a remark the clergyman made during the launch of the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Day on July 1, 2025.

During the event, Duncan-Williams expressed his hope that Ghana would reach a point where citizens would no longer travel abroad in search of greener pastures but rather travel only for leisure, such as food tours.

Responding to this, Jon Benjamin accused the archbishop of living a lavish lifestyle funded by church tithes.

He claimed to have personally witnessed the luxurious life Duncan-Williams enjoys, alleging that the pastor sometimes books the entire first-class cabin on British Airways flights for his family vacations.

“Duncan-Williams certainly travels for nice vacations, on occasion booking the whole first-class cabin of the BA flight to London for his family. I wonder if the poor people who give him ‘tithes’ they can’t afford, and which undermine their economic survival, known in what high luxury he lives. I saw that luxury with my own eyes at his house and office,” Benjamin wrote.

His comments sparked outrage among a section of Ghanaians on social media, who questioned his motives and criticised his approach.

One user fired back, “Who’s this (sic)? How do Ghana’s issues concern you? Oh, you want Ghanaians to keep queuing to go to that your stupid country to be enslaved? Your useless embassy makes more in an hour than any amount of tithes he receives in a year.”

Another user added, “I even bought data to read your nonsense.”

Others chimed in, “Don’t be myopic.”

“To a nonbeliever, envious and hateful person like yourself, it’s a big Yes.”

“Man, you’re English and should have understood what he said. He’s praying that every Ghanaian including those giving him tithe would be able to afford what he’s enjoying, as you claim.”

“Why do you guys always have a problem with ‘tithes? First, it’s not your money. Second, people use their money for what they believe benefits them. Why can’t you let people do what they think is best with their own money?”

Drop in inflation should give Bank of Ghana room to cut policy rate – Theo Acheampong

0

An economist, Dr Theo Acheampong, has said that the drop in inflation should give the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC)  of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) enough space to cut the policy rate.

During the 124th MPC press briefing in Accra on Friday, May 23, the Monetary Policy Committee maintained the Policy Rate at 28 per cent.

But with the rate of inflation going down, Dr Acheampong expresses the view that this should allow the MPC the space to reduce the policy rate a few notches down by at least 100 basis points and further during the course of the year on improved inflation expectations.

“Ghana’s inflation for June 2025 slows significantly to 13.7% drivien by both food and non-food inflation declines, and which are supported by the appreciating Cedi and improved external front.

“With Israel-Iran conflict ceasefire holding, the external front looks moderately stable over the medium term.

“The drop in inflation should give the Bank of Ghana Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) room to cut the policy rate a few notches down by at least 100 basis points and further during the course of the year on improved inflation expectations.  Ghanaians could see this in improved cost of living and bank lending rates also coming down in the coming months,” he wrote on Facebook.

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has announced that inflation rate for June 2025 is 13.7%.

The Government Statistici, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu said at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, that the decline was influenced by a significant slowdown in the general price levels of foodstuffs and items.

Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu noted that the development shows that the pressures driving inflation over the past months are declining.

For the first time in a while, the general price levels from May to June this year dropped, recording what a deflation of 1.2 percent.

Dr. Iddrisu said, “The downward inflationary trend over the last 6 months provides some consistency and assurance of real, sustained shift in prices.”

The Upper West region recorded the highest regional inflation of 32.3% largely caused by food inflation and utilities while the Bono region recorded the lowest of 8.4%.

‘Your nasty, evil attitude has killed many talents’ – Kwesi Arthur slams critics over food content saga

Ghanaian rapper Kwesi Arthur Ghanaian rapper Kwesi Arthur

Ghanaian rapper Kwesi Arthur has fired back at critics who have accused him of abandoning music in favour of posting food and lifestyle content on social media.

In a video shared on X on June 1, 2025, the “Grind Day” hitmaker addressed the backlash he received after posting a video showcasing a variety of dishes.

According to him, the criticism has not only been harsh but rooted in negativity that hinders creativity and progress in the creative arts industry.

“Some of you have decided to be very evil and nasty about it in my comments. Some people have gone to the extent of being like, oh, I hope he goes broke and he starts eating gari, so he can give us the type of music he used to give us. I sent them back to the sender,” he said.

He emphasised that he has no interest in returning to a life of hardship, adding that he has worked hard to elevate himself beyond that point.

“That’s not a life I want. I don’t want to suffer, bro. I’ve suffered enough in my time. That is why I have worked so hard to overcome that and be in the position that I am in right now. I’m not interested in suffering no more. So if you like to suffer all the best to you. Kudos. You guys take this nasty, evil attitude and kill a lot of talents in this country. But I am not one of them,” he added.

Despite the negativity, Kwesi Arthur made it clear that he will not be discouraged from posting lifestyle content, particularly food-related videos, which, according to him, he enjoys sharing with his fans.

“Like I grew up in Tama, bro. And I started out rapping shirtless. Like you see Tema boy wey dey rap shirtless before. So what the fuck makes you think you go fit tell me what to do. Let’s be serious here,” he added.

‘I’m God-fearing and peace-loving’ – Old video of ‘Dada Joe Remix’ surfaces after extradition to US

Dada Joe Remix being extradited to the US over an alleged romance fraud scheme Dada Joe Remix being extradited to the US over an alleged romance fraud scheme

A video of embattled businessman Joseph Badu Boateng, popularly known as Dada Joe Remix, has surfaced online following his extradition to the United States over his alleged involvement in a romance fraud scheme estimated at over $100 million.

In the short clip, the popular business mogul is heard describing himself during an interview with JoyTwum Media.

Dada Joe Remix portrays himself as a businessman, philanthropist, humanitarian, God-fearing, and peace-loving.

“Daddy Joe — I am a businessman, philanthropist, and humanitarian. I feel sad when I see people struggling. I am God-fearing. I am not a violent person. I always stand for peace and unity,” he said.

Boateng was extradited to the United States on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, following his arrest in Ghana. He is accused of orchestrating a sophisticated romance fraud scheme that allegedly defrauded victims—primarily U.S. citizens—of over $100 million.

His extradition follows close collaboration between the U.S. Diplomatic Security Service (DSS), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Ghanaian law enforcement agencies.

According to U.S. prosecutors, Boateng and his network used fake online profiles—often posing as romantic partners—to manipulate victims into sending large sums of money under false pretenses, including fabricated inheritance claims and financial emergencies.

After months of investigations and international coordination, Ghanaian authorities arrested Boateng and others, facilitating his extradition to the United States, where he is now expected to stand trial.

Romance fraud is a growing form of global cybercrime that exploits victims’ emotional vulnerabilities, often resulting in significant financial loss. U.S. officials have raised concerns about the increasing involvement of West Africa-based networks in such operations, prompting deeper international cooperation to combat the threat.

Background

Dada Joe Remix was arrested in Ghana on May 28, 2025, following a formal extradition request from the U.S. government.

According to court documents, the FBI alleges that between 2013 and March 2023, Boateng and his associates defrauded elderly Americans by promising access to non-existent gold and jewelry. Victims were reportedly coerced into paying fictitious fees and taxes to facilitate the release of these items.

A grand jury indictment, unsealed on May 30, 2025, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona, charges Boateng with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.

Ghanaian authorities, citing obligations under the Extradition Act of 1960, worked closely with U.S. officials in a covert operation to facilitate his handover.

Boateng is now set to face prosecution in federal court in Arizona. If convicted, he could face substantial prison time.

Parliament to debate 24-Hour Economy Policy document

0

Augustus Obuadum Tanoh, Presidential Advisor for the 24-Hour Economy Secretaria Augustus Obuadum Tanoh, Presidential Advisor for the 24-Hour Economy Secretaria

Augustus Obuadum Tanoh, Presidential Advisor for the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat, has given the assurance that the 24-Hour Economy Policy document will be presented to Parliament after its unveiling on July 2, for comprehensive debate by Members of Parliament.

He believes this will enable legislators from both sides of the aisle to make inputs into the policy to ensure its holistic and seamless implementation.

“We need to debate the content of the programme to justify the creation of an Authority. So, it is inevitable that it is going to happen,” Tanoh stated.

This follows a proposal made recently by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, that the 24-Hour Economy Policy document be debated on the floor of Parliament to gain the buy-in of parliamentarians and ensure national ownership of the policy, regardless of political affiliations.

Mr. Tanoh made this known during a media encounter in Accra on June 30, held to solicit media support in disseminating information about the policy to citizens.

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to officially launch the 24-Hour Economy Policy document on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.

It is envisaged that the flagship programme will create not fewer than 1.7 million jobs over the next four years to drive industrial transformation.

Tanoh also stated that the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat would be converted into an Authority to enhance its operational scope, which would require parliamentary approval.

“There has been approval to convert the current 24-Hour Secretariat into an Authority. And of course, it will need to be passed by a parliamentary majority,” he added.

During his interaction with the media, Mr. Tanoh said the government aims to mobilise four billion US dollars over the next four years from development finance partners and institutions globally to ensure the full-scale implementation of the programme.

The programme, he said, is designed to transform the economy and stimulate private sector participation to create jobs and ensure prosperity for all Ghanaians.

He noted that the government would provide an initial seed capital of $300 million to support businesses and individuals who sign up for the programme to ramp up production.

The programme is anchored on three key pillars:

Production Transformation

Supply Chain and Market Efficiency

Human Capital Development

These pillars are supported by eight sub-programmes, including:

Grow 24

Make 24

Connect 24

Show Ghana

Go Ghana

Digital Technology

Aspire 24

Tanoh indicated that the government drew lessons from previous national development initiatives, including Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s Seven-Year Development Plan, the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA), and the National Development Planning Commission’s 40-Year Development Plan.

Abdul-Nasser Suglo Alidu, Head of Strategy and Programmes at the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat, provided a presentation on the policy, highlighting the various sub-programmes. He noted that the initiative is designed to transform production, with agriculture as its main anchor, to ensure food sufficiency.

He explained that the programme also aims to develop the country’s value chain, achieve greater productivity, and expand industrial output to promote an export-driven economy.

For example:

The Make 24 component is meant to boost the manufacturing of goods and services.

Aspire 24 seeks to change the mindset of Ghanaian workers and reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks in the public sector, thereby improving citizen attitudes toward productivity.

Show Ghana aims to showcase the country’s rich and diverse cultural identity and engage with the diaspora to promote tourism.

Go Ghana is intended to mobilise citizens toward building a prosperous nation.

The Made-in-Ghana initiative encourages the local manufacturing of goods and urges Ghanaians to patronise domestically produced items.

Mr. Abdul-Nasser also mentioned that the programme would roll out the Volta Economic Corridor, which will feature industrial parks, agro-ecological parks, and lake transportation on the Volta Lake to boost socio-economic development in the area.

He emphasised that the programme has a national character and is designed to leverage Ghana’s human resource capacity and ingenuity to accelerate socio-economic transformation and create jobs.

Citing countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, China, and Denmark, which have implemented similar initiatives in the past, Mr. Abdul-Nasser expressed confidence that Ghana could soon become a model of industrial transformation in West Africa and the African continent at large.

Mohammed Kudus has strong admirers at Chelsea

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown has hinted that Ghanaian attacking midfielder Mohammed Kudus could join Chelsea this summer.

Kudus has been strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, despite interest from London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Chelsea, eager to bolster Enzo Maresca’s squad, have already secured deals for Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens. However, sources suggest that their pursuit of Kudus remains active.

Brown, who has extensive experience in top-level player recruitment and also served as a scout for West Ham United, expressed some reservations about Kudus’ consistency but acknowledged his undeniable talent.

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown revealed that the former Ajax star has strong admirers at the two-time Champions League winners.

“It looks like Kudus will be leaving West Ham,” he told Football Insider. “There’s been a lot of interest in him, but these clubs aren’t going to pay £80 million for him.

They’ll talk to West Ham to negotiate a lower fee, and I think the club will be open to that because it will still be a significant amount.

I must be honest, I’ve got concerns about his consistency — he didn’t have the best season.

But these clubs will know that, and they’ll believe they can bring the best out of him. Chelsea are the latest club looking to make a move, and Tottenham are speaking to him as well.

With Chelsea, it feels like they can spend endlessly and are prepared to do so. They’ve already agreed deals for Pedro and Gittens, but from what I hear, they’re not stopping there.

Kudus has admirers at Stamford Bridge, and they’re still looking to strengthen their attack. So despite my personal concerns, these clubs are clearly keen to bring him in — and his talent is obvious if they can unlock it,” he added.

Kudus impressed in his debut Premier League season, scoring 14 goals and providing six assists across all competitions. However, his output dipped last season, netting just five goals in total.

The 24-year-old is currently enjoying a holiday in Ghana as transfer talks continue.

Nuclear Regulatory Authority New Employees Stranded

Professor Francis Otoo

A number of employees recruited by the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA) in December 2024 are facing uncertainty after receiving fresh correspondence to hold on.

According to a directive from the Acting Director-General of NRA, Professor Francis Otoo, the suspension is aimed at ensuring compliance with the sector ministry’s policies and applicable legal frameworks.

The affected employees are currently awaiting further directives from the regulatory authority. The NRA’s decision has left many wondering about the future of their employment with the Authority.

A statement signed by the Acting Director-General read, “We write to formally inform you that there is an ongoing review at the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST) concerning NRA’s recent recruitment undertaken after December 2024. As previously communicated by the former Director-General, these issues require resolution to ensure compliance with the Sector Ministry’s policies, standards and applicable legal frameworks.”

The statement added, “Please be informed that this matter remains under active review. As part of the process, and in consultation with relevant oversight bodies, it has been decided to suspend salary disbursements from June 2025. While this measure is intended to allow for the completion procedures, be informed that the resumption of payment will depend on the final outcome of these engagements.

“We acknowledge the inconvenience this interruption may cause. Please be assured that the Authority is committed to resolving this matter. We will continue to keep you informed of any developments and next steps.”

The confused persons are wondering whether like others whose appointments were terminated following the swearing-in of a new government, they too would suffer a similar fate.

Explainer: What’s inside Ghana’s 24-hour economy blueprint?

0

After 176 days in office, the NDC government has officially launched its flagship 24-hour economy policy.

The 283-page document outlines in detail how the policy will be implemented and funded. It also reveals a notable shift in focus.

What was once seen as an initiative to keep state institutions and businesses operating round the clock has evolved into a broader strategy aimed at unlocking structural bottlenecks in Ghana’s economy.

President John Dramani Mahama

The policy will be rolled out in two parts. The first involves direct incentives to encourage businesses to run longer hours. The second focuses on deeper reforms needed to support a continuous production model.

Tax breaks for those who stay open

The government is offering a range of tax and regulatory incentives to attract businesses.

Companies that sign up to the programme will not pay import duties on manufacturing equipment, renewable energy systems, raw materials, and logistics infrastructure. Firms in strategic agriculture sectors such as grains, vegetables, oilseeds, tubers, livestock, and sugar will be exempt from corporate income tax entirely.

Other businesses will benefit from corporate income tax rebates. Companies running two shifts will receive a 25% rebate. Those operating three shifts will qualify for a 50% rebate. Targeted VAT exemptions will also be applied to help lower the cost of locally made goods.

Firms operating between 10 pm and 6 am will benefit from discounted electricity tariffs. Exporters of manufactured goods will receive rebates of between 2 and 6% of their export value.

Participating companies will receive fast-tracked water and electricity connections and priority regulatory clearance to accelerate production timelines.

Access to credit will also be improved. The Development Bank Ghana will provide long-term, low-interest loans to help companies scale up. In the cocoa sector, the government has promised easier access to raw cocoa beans for local processors enrolled in the programme.

These measures are designed to increase production, create jobs, and strengthen exports. But they will require legal reforms before they can be fully implemented.

Parliament will have to amend existing laws on taxation, trade, investment, and procurement to bring the incentives into force.

Fixing the structure

The second phase of the policy focuses on major infrastructure. The government plans to build large industrial parks in every region, referred to in the policy document as Wumbei Parks.

Each park will occupy at least 50 acres and operate with its own power supply, mainly from solar and biogas. Police and fire services will be stationed within the parks to ensure uninterrupted operations.

These parks will be located near newly designated agroecological zones along the Volta Basin. The zones will combine farming and agro-processing, with irrigation systems fed by the Volta Lake.

Urban farming clusters, including greenhouses, will be developed near major cities to reduce food transport costs. In communities without arable land, greenhouse farming will be prioritised.

The goal is to integrate production and logistics, reduce supply chain costs, and enable continuous economic activity throughout the day and night.

A $4 billion question

The programme is estimated to cost $4 billion initially. The government has committed $300 million as seed capital, about 8% of the total. The remaining 92% will be mobilised through public-private partnerships, led by the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund.

To support funding, a 2.5% import levy will be imposed on goods that can be produced locally. These include processed foods, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, cement, plastic household goods, second-hand clothing, sanitary pads, and diapers.

The government expects that the tax incentives will boost production enough to offset lost revenue. But the policy document does not provide any figures to back this claim.

Although it projects to create over 1.7 million jobs over four years, it lacks concrete projections for employment, export growth, or tax revenue. The math is missing.

Will It Work?

The 24-hour economy policy is being positioned as the centrepiece of the NDC’s economic revival strategy. It aims to fix both demand and supply issues in the economy. But success depends on execution.

The government has promised to pass new legislation to establish a 24-Hour Economy Authority, chaired by the president. A pilot programme involving 50 companies will also be launched.

But details on timelines, project sequencing, and fiscal risks are limited.

There is precedent for caution. The previous One District, One Factory (1D1F) initiative had a similar ambition. But by the end of 2023, after spending more than GH¢500 million, only 169 companies had received support, and many structural bottlenecks remained unresolved.

The difference this time is that the 24-hour policy is expected to be backed by law. That could make it harder to reverse after a change in government.

These are the central pillars, but the 283-page document is packed with dozens of other proposals, from digitised supply chains to urban farming schemes.

Still, critical questions remain unanswered. How will the government cover revenue shortfalls in the short term? Will it resort to borrowing? What safeguards are in place to ensure policy continuity beyond the next election cycle?

Ghana has unveiled one of its most ambitious industrial reforms in a generation. The incentives are bold, the structural vision is compelling, but the numbers are conspicuously absent.

Success will depend on private sector buy-in and the government’s ability to honour its incentives without turning them into loopholes.

Counselor Theodosia Jackson lauds Mahama’s National Day of Prayer Initiative

Marriage Counselor and Educationist, Theodosia Jackson Marriage Counselor and Educationist, Theodosia Jackson

Marriage Counselor and Educationist, Theodosia Jackson, has praised President John Mahama for making July 1 the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, describing it as a “spiritual directive” and a hopeful turning point in Ghana’s journey toward unity and prosperity.

Speaking during a service held at Jackson University College in Kumasi to mark the inaugural observance of the day, Jackson who also serves as Principal of Jackson College of Education hailed the initiative as a timely intervention.

“Prayer plays a significant role in the success of everything. If the president has declared a nationwide prayer for the country, then it is a clear sign that Ghana has hope for a brighter future. This is not just a political decision; it is obedience to divine guidance. Prayer is not a sign of weakness. it’s the strongest foundation we can have,” she added.

The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, now set to be observed annually, coincides with Republic Day, a day historically marking Ghana’s attainment of full republican status in 1960.

This year’s celebration, the first since President Mahama’s declaration, sought to foster national healing, spiritual reflection, and collective responsibility for Ghana’s socio-economic recovery.

Delivering the keynote sermon, Reverend James Annan of the Methodist Church, Aprade Society, also called on Ghanaians to embrace moral and spiritual renewal as the foundation for lasting national unity and truth.

“Preaching from Jeremiah 29:7–12, I say: Speak life, not curses. Promote unity, not tribalism. Uphold truth, not rumors. Seek justice with love, not vengeance,” he said.

He added that Ghana’s development must be rooted in love, inclusivity, and the integrity of spiritual values.

“Our challenges as a nation are not only economic or political, but they are also deeply moral and spiritual. If we do not rebuild our nation on the values of truth, peace, and justice, we cannot move forward,” he noted.

Even with a monkey as flagbearer we could have won

Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) UK Chapter, Kingsley Adumattah Agyapong, popularly known as Wofa K, has stated that the NPP’s crushing defeat in the 2024 general elections cannot be blamed on its presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, but rather on the party’s weak and ineffective internal structures.

Speaking in a candid assessment of the party’s electoral loss, Agyapong argued that the NPP entered the election with a fractured system that lacked direction and cohesion—from polling stations to national leadership—ultimately costing the party dearly at the polls.

“Dr Mahamudu did not cause us to lose the elections. If our polling stations, electoral areas, constituencies, and regional structures had been much stronger, with the national leadership acting as a strong regulator, we would not have suffered the humiliating defeat we saw in the 2024 general elections,” Wofa K stated.

In his sharp critique, he remarked that the party was so structurally weak that even with a symbolic or unqualified candidate “even a monkey” the NPP could have secured victory if its organizational base had been solid and effective.

Agyapong, known for his frank political commentary, stressed that the NPP’s downfall was not about personalities but the result of years of neglecting the foundational structures of the party.

He likened the NPP to “a wounded lion” that lacked effective leadership and proper crisis management, adding that the party must reorganize itself at every level if it hopes to return to power in 2028.

“Without strong leadership and solid structures, even if we presented someone as accomplished as Barack Obama, we would still lose,” he said.

Wofa K further warned that the NPP is now facing extraordinary political circumstances and must adopt unconventional strategies to recover.

He called for a comprehensive rescue plan aimed at regaining the party’s lost parliamentary seats and reconnecting with the over two million voters who abandoned the party in 2024.

He urged the NPP leadership to reassess its approach to crisis management and electoral strategy, cautioning that unless swift action is taken, the party risks making the 2028 elections “untenable.”

“Some individuals are growing restless, and the situation is becoming increasingly complex. If there is any election that requires meticulous attention, it is the National Election because its outcome determines the fate of the party at every level. Had our structures been robust, we would have emerged victorious—even with a monkey as our candidate,” he emphasized.

Agyapong’s remarks have since sparked widespread discussion within party circles, with many agreeing on the urgent need for a deep organizational overhaul ahead of the next electoral battle.

Effective collaboration needed in addressing leakages in oil and gas sector

Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Operations and Technical Services at PHDC Onasis Rosely Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Operations and Technical Services at PHDC Onasis Rosely

“There are a lot of my friends, big personalities, and clubs who want to see me in the national team, and they also want to see me go far,” Mohammed said in an interview.

UPSA Students push back against midweek dress code rule

0

Tensions flared at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), on Wednesday, July 2, after several students were prevented from entering lecture halls due to a sudden enforcement of the school’s dress code policy, prompting strong reactions from affected students.

A student who spoke anonymously on Citi Eyewitness News on Wednesday, July 2, expressed frustration with the perceived inconsistency of the enforcement and the lack of clear communication. According to the student, the directive appears to be selectively applied and poorly timed.

“A message was sent to us, I think, a week ago about the dress code. But to be honest, enforcement only begins when the Level 100 students resume. I’ve witnessed this trend. Anytime we’re on campus, they start enforcing it just to put fear in us.”

The student emphasised that UPSA’s policy designates Mondays for official wear, and questioned why students were being pressured to dress formally on a Wednesday, outside the school’s usual dress expectations.

“UPSA wears official attire on Monday. But this is a Wednesday, and you are pressuring us to wear any official wear, which is not right,” the student added.

The dress code enforcement created chaos across campus, with some students reportedly barred from classes as early as 7 a.m., even those scheduled to take tests. Reports indicate that many students were unaware that the policy would be strictly enforced midweek, leading to confusion and growing dissatisfaction.

In a separate incident, a female public relations student was allegedly dragged by a man believed to be a staff member, further deepening concerns about how the dress code rules are being applied and enforced.

‘We’re disappointed in President Mahama for granting Agradaa an audience after she insulted him

The Executive Director of Peace Watch Ghana, Madam Nyonkopa Daniels, has expressed disappointment in President John Dramani Mahama for granting self-styled evangelist Patricia Asiedu, popularly known as Agradaa, an audience during the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving held on July 1, 2025.

Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Madam Daniels stated that although President Mahama is widely admired for his kind-hearted nature and forgiving spirit, allowing Agradaa to engage with him publicly—after she had insulted and vilified him prior to the elections—was, in her view, a poor decision that has angered many within the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“I am disappointed in President Mahama for granting Agradaa an audience. She subjected him to insults and false accusations ahead of the elections. I know the president is not vindictive, but this sends the wrong signal—that when you insult our leaders, you will eventually be granted an audience,” Madam Daniels remarked.

Her comments came after Agradaa, in an interaction with journalists at the State House, stated that even if she failed to make it to heaven, she would still feel fulfilled because she had hugged President Mahama.

Agradaa had joined members of the clergy, civil society organizations, and citizens at the prayer event aimed at fostering unity and national stability.

Madam Daniels, however, argued that such public interaction with a controversial figure like Agradaa undermines respect for leadership and encourages the normalization of insults as a path to recognition.

“I have received numerous calls from people expressing displeasure at the president for this. We know Mahama has a good heart, but even Jesus Christ disciplined people when necessary. I also blame his security detail for allowing the woman to hug him,” she added.

She further stressed the need for Ghanaian society to move away from a culture that rewards insults and disrespect toward leaders, cautioning that such behavior sets a dangerous example for the youth.

“We must stop incentivizing people to insult others. We must end vindictive behavior and discourteous speech. This conduct is harmful and sends the wrong message—that insulting others is the only way to get attention,” she concluded.

Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy, Goosie Tanoh, has expressed confidence in Ghana’s ability to successfully implement the 24-hour economy initiative, stating that the country has what it takes to drive meaningful economic transformation.

Speaking at the official launch of the 24-Hour Economy policy on Wednesday, July 2, Mr. Tanoh stated that the secretariat welcomes constructive criticism and suggestions, emphasising that such feedback is crucial to the programme’s continuous improvement and long-term success.

“We at the secretariat are confident that we will continue to receive constructive criticism and suggestions for further improvement. Criticism is always welcome,” he said.

Describing the 24-hour economy as a “living programme,” he explained that it is enriched in science and grounded in firm social democratic principles, but flexible enough to respond tactically to a changing environment.

Mr. Tanoh emphasised that the initiative is designed to evolve through learning and adjustments as circumstances change.

“We will learn many lessons along the way and make numerous adjustments. This is the only way a programme can transform our society in the short, medium, and long term.

“We can say without a doubt that our President is a true champion of responsible entrepreneurship and national transformation. We, as a country, we as a people, have what it takes to succeed,” he said.

The 24-Hour Economy policy aims to create jobs, boost productivity, and drive inclusive national growth by promoting round-the-clock operations in key sectors such as health, manufacturing, transport, and retail.

Majority Leader challenges NPP to pick a female running-mate for 2028 general elections

0

Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga

The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has urged the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to nominate a female running mate to demonstrate its commitment to gender empowerment.

Ayariga, who is also the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, noted that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) had already set the pace by appointing Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as its running mate, who subsequently became Ghana’s first female Vice President—a historic feat in the country’s political history.

“We, the NDC, can only go forward…” he said to cheers on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, in response to comments by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who claimed that President Mahama was not committed to gender equity.

Ayariga dismissed the Minority Leader’s allegations that few women were appointed to ministerial positions under the Mahama-led administration.

He called on the NPP to allow female candidates to go unopposed in constituencies considered “safe seats” in its strongholds, particularly in the Ashanti Region, while the NDC could do the same in the Volta Region.

According to him, such a move would ensure a sufficient number of women in Parliament, from whom the President could appoint ministers at any given time.

“Now, the Minority Leader has suddenly become a gender champion, when, as a Majority Leader in government, he could not protect the seats of his female MPs in the last elections and lost most of them… dzi wo fie asem, to wit, ‘focus on your internal issues,’” Ayariga added, drawing laughter and cheers from both sides of the aisle.

Earlier, the Minority Leader, Afenyo-Markin, had stated that President Mahama had failed to fulfill his election promise to appoint 30 percent of his Cabinet from among women.

“We have women MPs on the majority side of the House who have the requisite credentials to be ministers, but they have been relegated to the background,” Afenyo-Markin claimed.

The MP for Effutu also alleged that only 28 women had been appointed by the President as mayors and Chief Executives of the metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies.

The visit, which culminated in a Business-to-Business (B2B) meeting on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, in Accra, is part of a broader effort to strengthen trade and investment ties between Ghana and the United States.

The delegation—comprising business leaders, policymakers, and investors from Miami—aims to foster partnerships in key sectors including agro-processing, real estate, artefacts, and textiles.

At a welcome reception, the CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Maame Efua Houadjeto, remarked, “It is a pleasure to have you here in Ghana. Give me the money you’ll donate at my funeral while I’m still alive—Kaakyire Kwame Appiah

Musician, Kaakyire Kwame Appiah Musician, Kaakyire Kwame Appiah

Legendary highlife musician Kaakyire Kwame Appiah has urged his loved ones to start giving him their funeral donations while he is still alive.

He believes that instead of making donations during his funeral, they should rather give him the funds now so he can make good use of them while alive.

The highlife musician says he does not subscribe to the practice of making huge donations at funerals while the person struggled during their lifetime.

He made these remarks during an interview on Property FM in Cape Coast, which was monitored by MyNewsGh.com.

He said, “All that I’m saying is that, as humans, we need help while we are still alive, so don’t wait for me to die before you come and show off at my funeral. As we speak right now, if you call your siblings or friends and say you urgently need GH¢1,000 to do something, I’m sure they will give you a lot of excuses.”

He added, “Don’t wait until I’m no longer alive before you come and make huge donations at my funeral ceremony. Now that I’m alive, give me the money you would have donated at my funeral. I can use that money to do a lot of things while I’m still alive. The bottom line is that if we can help one another in any way, let’s do it—because we don’t last long on this earth,” he opined.

Parliamentary elections will be rerun at 19 polling stations in Ablekuma North Constituency Parliamentary elections will be rerun at 19 polling stations in Ablekuma North Constituency

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that a parliamentary election rerun will take place on Friday, July 11, 2025, at 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency.

This decision follows weeks of deadlock between the two major political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), regarding the validity of the constituency’s election results.

In a statement issued on July 2, 2025, the EC explained that the rerun was agreed upon after extensive consultations and a thorough review of the electoral process in the affected areas.

According to the Commission, the rerun is necessary because, although scanned results from the 19 polling stations were approved by party agents, they were not verified by the respective Presiding Officers, as required by electoral procedures.

The rerun will cover 19 of the 37 polling stations in the constituency. The results from the remaining 18 polling stations, which were not affected by the dispute, remain valid.

The rerun comes after months of disagreement over unverified pink sheets, which delayed the declaration of results from the 2024 general elections.

Below is the list of the affected polling stations as published by the Electoral Commission

1. God First International School, Darkuman (1) – Nyamekye

John Dramani Mahama is the President of Ghana John Dramani Mahama is the President of Ghana

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to develop the Volta Economic Corridor, aimed at harnessing the economic potential of the Volta Lake and its surrounding areas.

According to him, the initiative will create opportunities for industrial growth, agriculture, and trade, transforming the Volta Region into a major economic hub.

Speaking at the launch of the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development initiative in Accra on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, the President emphasised that the corridor would unlock vast untapped resources around the lake while supporting job creation.

“While the 24-Hour Economy programme is nationally focused, our flagship innovation is the Volta Economic Corridor, a transnational effort to unlock the economic and environmental potential of the Volta Lake and its surrounding lands,” he said.

President Mahama noted that the plan aligns with broader efforts to modernise transport, industry, and agriculture across the country, positioning the Volta Region as a key driver of inclusive growth.

He stressed the importance of establishing a modern transport corridor under the Connect24 programme, designed to connect Ghana’s north to south and east to west, thereby enhancing trade and mobility nationwide.

Additionally, the President highlighted the Volta projects in the Kosombo area as central to this development agenda.

He explained that the project would not only generate power to support Ghana’s industrial sector but would also serve as an integrated development initiative to promote active business opportunities.

“Our vision for the Volta projects at Kosombo is not just as a power source to energise Ghana’s industrial sector, but as part of a transport corridor that connects the north to the south and the east to the west under Connect24,” he explained.

Clubs won’t pay Mohammed Kudus’ release clause, but a deal is likely

Chelsea is among clubs reportedly interested in signing Mohammed Kudus Chelsea is among clubs reportedly interested in signing Mohammed Kudus

Chelsea is among clubs reportedly interested in signing Mohammed Kudus, with Mick Brown, former Manchester United chief scout, hinting that a deal is likely despite clubs being unwilling to pay his £80 million release clause.

Brown believes West Ham United will be open to negotiations, and a lower fee might be accepted.

Kudus has attracted attention from several top clubs, including Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

Chelsea has already agreed deals for João Pedro and Jamie Gittens, and Kudus is reportedly on their radar.

Tottenham has prioritized signing the Ghanaian attacking midfielder, and talks are ongoing.

Despite reports about his future, Kudus remains tight-lipped about his next move while on holiday in Ghana.

Brown expressed concerns about Kudus’ consistency, but believes top clubs think they can get the best out of him.

Expand electoral college or risk apathy – Patrick Boamah urges NPP

0

Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has called on the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to expand its electoral college and embrace broader participation in internal elections, as part of urgent reforms to tackle growing voter apathy within the party.

In a letter issued on Wednesday, July 2, Mr. Boamah stated that the NPP’s ability to strengthen internal democracy and restore institutional credibility hinges on inclusive electoral reforms that empower its grassroots.

According to him, expanding the electoral college to involve more party members, especially those in good standing, will enhance transparency and renew confidence in the party’s democratic values.

He proposed that voting rights in internal elections be tied to active membership, particularly the payment of dues, to ensure that those making decisions are genuinely invested in the party’s future. While he acknowledged that this would be a financially demanding initiative, he argued it could also serve as a sustainable model for fundraising.

“As the founding democratic political party in the Fourth Republic, the NPP should be committed to allowing all members in good standing to vote in party elections. This will help generate funds to support this expensive exercise,” he wrote.

The MP further noted that simply relying on a top-down approach to leadership decisions will not solve the problem of apathy, which he says is taking root across the party’s support base. Instead, he urged party leaders to focus on reforms that increase grassroots participation and accountability.

He emphasised that maintaining and strengthening the party’s bottom-up approach, where polling station executives, electoral area coordinators, and constituency officers are central to decision-making, is critical for the NPP’s future.

On the matter of leadership renewal, the MP also recommended that new party executives be elected before the selection of a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections. He explained that such sequencing is strategic, as the new flagbearer would be expected to work closely with the new executive team throughout the campaign.

Mahama’s landslide victory was clear from June – Goosie Tanoh

0

The Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programmes, Mr. Augustus Goosie Tanoh, has revealed that an internal poll conducted by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in June 2024 accurately projected a landslide victory for then-presidential candidate, now President John Dramani Mahama.

President Mahama secured a decisive win in the 2024 general elections, which Mr. Tanoh said did not come as a surprise to the party’s core strategists.

Speaking during an interview on Channel One TV’s The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Wednesday, July 2, Mr. Tanoh explained that while various polls — including Global InfoAnalytics — indicated strong public support for the NDC, the party remained cautious.

He added that although one member of the campaign team was convinced as early as June 2024 that a landslide was imminent, the party chose not to rely entirely on polling predictions.

He emphasised the party’s strategy of staying grounded and avoiding complacency, acknowledging that voter behaviour in Ghana can shift rapidly in the months leading up to elections.

“I was really surprised, I didn’t have a sense of the landslide in September 2024, because Ghanaians normally decide in October. But after a few of the Global InfoAnalytics and our own surveys that we do privately, it was very clear we were heading for a landslide. One of our team was dead set from June 2024 that it was going to be a landslide, but we said we had to be careful, but he was right,” he stated.

24-Hour Economy is real policy, not rhetoric – Haruna Iddrisu on Mahama’s economic shift

0

President John Dramani Mahama, speaking at the launch of the 24-Hour Economy initiative

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu says President John Mahama’s newly launched 24-Hour Economy policy is not a mere political slogan but a well-thought-out national plan aimed at solving deep-rooted economic challenges.

According to the Tamale South MP, the policy represents Mahama’s transition “from slogan to action,” rooted in years of contemplation and backed by urgent economic realities.

“Today, we had the rare opportunity of President John Dramani Mahama launching one of his major flagship projects and, as he described it, from policy or slogan to action,” Iddrisu said. “This was not a nerve-breaking exercise at all.”

He noted that the 24-Hour Economy policy, launched alongside an accelerated Export Development Initiative, stems from Mahama’s long-standing belief that Ghana must reduce its dependence on imports and drive domestic production.

“He shared with the Ghanaian people that this has been in his thinking and contemplation in the last four or more years,” the former Minority Leader said.

“He’s talked about it whilst being out of government as President of the Republic, and expedited by the circumstance of our country that we still spend huge amounts of money on imports—about $3 billion on rice imports, $3.4 billion on cereal grains, frozen poultry, $2.6 billion and Sugar takes $2.4 billion.”

According to Mr Iddrisu, Mahama’s message was clear: this is not just an announcement.

“This is not an event or a race which must end today,” he said. “The President lined the 24-hour and accelerated Export Development Policy with conviction and belief.”

For Mr Iddrisu, the underlying goal is self-sufficiency.

“It means that the President wants to respond to a national need, a need for us to invest more in, in his words, to have a self-reliant, dependent, food-sufficient, producing country that can feed itself—a country that guarantees food security.”

Haruna Iddrisu emphasised that Mahama cannot comprehend why Ghana continues to be heavily import-dependent.

“For the President now, he simply cannot understand why we should be an import-dependent economy, and what it is that we can produce? He would provide guidance and leadership as President.”

“That is why he’s gotten Goosie Tanoh, one of the sharpest and brilliant minds of the NDC, to be the anchor person to guide him in implementing the 24-Hour Economy.”

Mr Iddrisu said the private sector will take centre stage in the new policy direction.

“What was profound today is for the President to remark publicly that the 24-Hour Economy will be private sector-led, and that it will not be dominated by government,” he said.

“Government will only be an enabler, a facilitator for the private sector to take up the initiative in the various sectors of the economy.”

Poultry Farmer Urges Govt Intervention

0

Moses Jackson Asabil

A poultry farmer in the Ashanti Region is calling on the government to take immediate steps to revive Ghana’s struggling poultry industry, warning that the sector is on the brink of collapse due to high production costs and prolonged neglect.

Mr. Moses Jackson Asabil, Chief Executive Officer of M.J Asabil Farms located at Manso-Akropong in the Amansie West District, made a heartfelt appeal to the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, to prioritise investment in poultry production. He described the sector as a “vibrant economic driver” capable of reducing youth unemployment and strengthening the national economy.

Founded in 2019, M.J Asabil Farms is known for producing quality eggs, live broilers, dressed chicken, and organic fertilisers. However, Mr. Asabil says the business climate has become increasingly hostile, with many farms folding up due to overwhelming operational costs.

He noted that the withdrawal of government incentives — particularly subsidies on poultry feed and related inputs—has left farmers exposed to rising prices. “Today, poultry feed constitutes nearly 90 percent of our production costs. Many farms are shutting down because the margins are no longer sustainable,” he lamented.

Beyond rising costs, Mr. Asabil pointed to environmental and infrastructural challenges specific to the Manso area. He said the proliferation of illegal mining (galamsey) has depleted available farmland and diverted potential labour from agriculture to mining. “Our farm is literally surrounded by abandoned pits. It’s built on reclaimed land, and expanding operations here is nearly impossible,” he said.

He further criticised the poor road infrastructure in the community, which he believes is crippling local trade. “The road network is terrible. Transporters avoid the Manso route entirely, making it hard for us to send goods to market. This affects revenue and growth,” he added.

Mr. Asabil urged the government to take bold steps to support local poultry production as a means of reducing the country’s reliance on imported frozen chicken, which costs Ghana over $100 million annually. “With the right support, we can meet domestic demand for chicken. We have the capacity, experience, and workforce—we only need enabling policies,” he emphasised.

He also called on the Minister for Roads and Highways to urgently include the Manso road network in the national development agenda. “Without good roads, no business can thrive. Fixing our roads will open up the area to more economic activity,” he concluded.

Mr. Asabil’s plea underscores growing concerns within Ghana’s agricultural sector, as farmers continue to grapple with systemic challenges threatening food security and job creation.

Electing MMDCEs crucial; it’ll promote local democracy and accountability – CCEG

0

The Center for Civic Engagement and Governance (CCEG) has called on the Mahama administration to expedite efforts toward enabling the election of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to help strengthen Ghana’s decentralisation process.

According to the civil society organisation, the current decentralisation architecture has failed to deliver the meaningful development envisioned under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).

Although the Act provides a robust legal framework for both administrative and political decentralisation, CCEG argues that communities at the local level lack true accountability, as MMDCEs often show loyalty to the appointing authority rather than to the people they serve.

In a statement analysing the shortcomings of Ghana’s local governance system, Wesley Owusu, Co-founder of CCEG, stated that the centralised mode of appointing MMDCEs “weakens local ownership and accountability because it creates a situation where MMDCEs are more loyal to the appointing authority than to the people they are meant to serve.”

Decentralisation and Development: What’s Missing?

For over three decades, Ghana has presented decentralisation as a key strategy for promoting equitable development, empowering communities, and deepening democracy. Successive governments have pledged to strengthen local governance structures, and while some progress has been made, the overall results have been inconsistent.

Local governments now exist across all districts, and District Assemblies are legally mandated to plan and implement development initiatives.

However, a deeper question remains: Why hasn’t decentralisation translated into tangible development outcomes for most Ghanaians? What is missing?

At the core of Ghana’s decentralisation architecture lies the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), which establishes a strong legal foundation for both administrative and political decentralisation.

The Act grants Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) legislative and executive authority over their jurisdictions and tasks them with ensuring comprehensive local development. Yet, as with any law, effectiveness depends on implementation — and therein lies the problem.

NPP kicks against EC’s proposed rerun in Ablekuma North

Haruna Mohammed, NPP Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed, NPP Deputy General Secretary

The Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun the parliamentary election in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency has been fiercely contested by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which has described the move as unwarranted and lacking consensus.

NPP Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed, speaking on Citi Eyewitness News following the EC’s July 2 press release, asserted that there was no agreement with the EC, despite the party’s representatives being present at the meeting.

He stated, “That is very evident in the release of the EC itself—that the political parties did not agree.”

According to the EC, the reason for the rerun in 19 of the 37 polling stations is that the presiding officers failed to verify the scanned Pink Sheets used for collation. Additionally, the original Pink Sheets were destroyed when party supporters overran the collation center.

However, the NPP insists that the outstanding results—particularly from three polling stations—are sufficient to complete the collation and declare a winner.

“We don’t know what the EC is up to. The NPP is not going to give up on this particular fight,” Mohammed said.

He continued, “We don’t know of any elections. The EC must conclude the collation from the three polling stations—this is still outstanding, and that is clear for us,” CitiNewsroom.com quoted him as saying.

The NPP also argued that instead of organizing fresh polls in stations where party agents had already certified the results, the EC should focus on securing the collation process.

NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong is expected to address the public and outline the party’s official position at a press conference scheduled for 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the EC has assured the public that the rerun—scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025—will be transparent and peaceful, with security provided by the Ghana Police Service.

Why Salma Mumin doesn’t idolise celebrities

Actress and businesswoman Salma Mumin has said she does not like to idolise celebrities.

She explained to Nana Romeo on Okay FM that this was because she had experienced fame as a teenager.

“The thing is, I got into the limelight very early—while I was still in secondary school—so I experienced the celebrity life from the very beginning. Because of that, there’s no celebrity I’d say I’m so enchanted by that I’d send a DM,” Salma said.

“Yeah, I like people, I admire them from afar, I follow them, comment on their posts and all that, but I’ve never picked up a phone to DM any of them.”

She revealed, however, that “countless celebrities” had approached her in the DMs.

“Some want to do business, some want to be friends,” she explained, while insisting on keeping their names private.

The conversation was prompted by Salma’s comment that there’s “no need” to send football icon Cristiano Ronaldo a DM “because he may never see it.”

“What am I going to do in a married man’s DM?” she added, laughing.

Portuguese star Ronaldo is greatly admired and followed by the Ghanaian actress.

Recently, Salma revealed that if she had to switch lives with anyone, it would be Ronaldo’s partner, Georgina.

“She’s on yachts every day, travelling via private jet, she has all the brands, she’s living her best life, she’s got her kids, and of course, her husband is the best player in the world. What else could she ask for? And he’s a very handsome guy to begin with,” she explained.

Prof. Kaori Cautions Media On AI Usage

0

HAYASHI Kaori

A Professor of the University of Tokyo, HAYASHI Kaori, has called on media practitioners to exercise some restraint when using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in their line of work.

Prof. Kaori’s lecture during the 3rd Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Chair event on the theme “From Ink to Intelligence: The Future of Japanese Journalism in the AI Era,” explored the trajectory of Japanese journalism, from its 19th-century origins in print culture to its current engagement with artificial intelligence.

She mentioned that with the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in reshaping the global media landscape, stakeholders in Ghana must adopt a strategic and cautious approach to its integration, drawing on lessons from Japan’s experience.

“Journalism has become even more important in the age of AI, setting certain kinds of principles in the world of information,” Prof. Kaori noted. She warned against the unchecked spread of fake news and called for stronger institutional frameworks within media organisations to monitor the use of AI and uphold professional standards.

She stated that despite Japan’s strong legacy in newspaper journalism, the industry now faces pressure to innovate while preserving editorial integrity. Media organisations are cautiously adopting AI for automation and content generation, amid concerns about ethics, accuracy, and regulation.

Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Yoshimoto Hiroshi, praised the JICA Chair as a valuable platform for intellectual exchange and shared learning. He acknowledged the dual nature of AI, urging stakeholders to find a balance between its potential benefits and risks.

“This is the third time we are organising the JICA Chair in Ghana, and the focus on AI is both relevant and necessary,” Ambassador Yoshimoto remarked. “We hope Japan’s development story, particularly in science and technology, can serve as a useful guide for Ghana.”

Senior Lecturer and Director at the Centre for Asian Studies, Dr. Lloyd George Adu Amoah, observed that while Japan is known for its technological prowess, it is taking a restrained approach to AI integration, particularly in safeguarding cultural values and journalistic integrity.

“From my research, it is clear that Japan is having second thoughts about the rise of artificial intelligence. The message from Japan is that countries like Ghana must begin to interrogate the broader implications of AI, not just embrace it with idealism,” Dr. Adu Amoah said.

24-Hour Economy policy will be private sector led – Haruna Iddrisu

0

Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, says the newly launched 24-Hour Economy policy by President John Dramani Mahama will be led by the private sector, not government.

Speaking on PM Express, the Tamale South MP said the president made it clear that government would only act as a facilitator and enabler to support businesses willing to take up the initiative.

“What was profound is for the President to remark publicly that 24-hour economy will be private sector led, and that it will not be dominated by government, and that government will only be an enabler, a facilitator, for the private sector to take up the initiative in the various sectors of the economy,” he stated.

The remarks followed the official unveiling of the policy by President Mahama earlier in the day on July 2, which the former Minority Leader described as a “rare opportunity” and “not a nerve-breaking exercise at all” for the president.

According to him, President Mahama launched the 24-Hour Economy alongside the Accelerated Export Development Initiative as part of a strategic national response to Ghana’s import-heavy economy.

“He launched the 24-hour policy and the accelerated Export Development Initiative of his government, and shared with the Ghanaian people that this has been in his thinking and contemplation in the last four or more years,” Mr Iddrisu noted.

“He’s talked about it whilst being out of government as President of the Republic, and expedited by the circumstance of our country that we still spend huge amounts of money on imports.”

He cited figures shared by Mahama to illustrate the challenge. “About $3 billion on rice imports, $3.4 billion on cereal grains, frozen poultry on $2.6 billion and sugar taking $2.4 billion,” he said, emphasising the urgency of promoting local production and export.

Haruna Iddrisu said he interpreted the launch as a direct response to a national need.

“It means that the President wants to respond to a national need, a need for us to invest more in – in his words – to have a self-reliant, dependent, food sufficient, producing country that can feed itself in a country that guarantees food security.”

He also highlighted the significance of the president appointing Goosie Tanoh to spearhead the initiative.

“That is why he’s gotten Goosie Tanoh, one of the sharpest and brilliant minds of the NDC, to be the anchor person to guide him in implementing the 24-hour economy.”

Haruna Iddrisu emphasised that Mahama’s intentions go beyond slogans.

“From policy or from slogan to action, 24-hour plus initiative of the president,” he said. “This is not an event or a race which must end today.”

Friday Club urges NPP presidential hopefuls to prioritise unity and issue-based campaigning

A group of New Patriotic Party-aligned lecturers known as the Friday Club, has called on all prospective presidential candidates and their supporters to exercise restraint, maturity and focus on issues rather than personalities as the party prepares for its internal leadership race ahead of the 2028 general elections.

In a statement released today, Wednesday, July 2, the group urged party members to uphold the NPP’s legacy of disciplined democratic practice and avoid conduct that could fracture party unity.

“As a party with a proud legacy of democratic practice and internal competition, the NPP must once again demonstrate its strength through a disciplined, issue-based and forward-looking leadership contest,” the statement read.

The Friday Club warned that while only one candidate will ultimately be chosen as the party’s flagbearer, fostering disunity during the contest could undermine efforts to rally support for the eventual nominee.

“Sowing seeds of acrimony now will only make unity and effective mobilisation later more difficult,” the group cautioned.

Signed by President of the group, Prof Kwabena Sarfo Sarfo-Kantankah, and Secretary, Dr Daniel Okyere-Darko Nsowah, the statement further urged all aspirants to focus their campaigns on policies, leadership qualities, and a shared vision for the party and country.

The group also called on the NPP’s National Executive Committee (NEC), Council of Elders and other internal structures to ensure a transparent and fair process, stressing the need for discipline and timely interventions to prevent potential divisions.

“We urge the National Executive Committee (NEC), the Council of Elders and other relevant structures and bodies within the Party to play proactive roles in ensuring that the internal contest is fair, transparent and devoid of actions that could jeopardise party cohesion,” the statement added.

The Friday Club concluded by urging all members of the NPP to let “unity, decorum and a shared commitment to Ghana’s development” guide their actions.

We’re ready for Ablekuma North rerun – NDC declares

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it is fully prepared to return to the polls in the Ablekuma North Constituency, following the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations after a dispute over results from the December 7, 2024, general election.

Speaking after the EC’s announcement in an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Wednesday July 2, the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Mustapha Gbande, expressed confidence in the party’s candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, and vowed to fight any attempt to undermine the will of the people.

“The NDC believes that our candidate Ewurabena Aubynn is capable, competent, and well fit for that purpose,” Gbande stated. “On December 7, the people of Ablekuma North, based on voting patterns, contemplated on making her their MP — as opposed to an individual who is only good at twerking on campaign platforms and has been alleged in visa racketeering.”

Gbande accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of attempting to manipulate the process to impose a candidate on the constituency. He said the NDC sees the rerun as an opportunity to restore the true voice of the electorate.

“You can’t impose that candidate on a constituency,” he said. “Every single step advanced by the NPP after December 7 leading to the indiscriminate walkout by the Minority in parliament to any action they have undertaken so far is an indication that they want to illegally impose on the people on Ablekuma North.”

The EC’s decision to rerun the election in 19 polling stations follows concerns raised by the NDC over the use of scanned Pink Sheets—key election result documents—submitted by the NPP. According to the EC, the scanned Pink Sheets from 19 polling stations lacked proper verification from Presiding Officers, despite being approved by party agents.

Gbande used the analogy of a cancelled exam to illustrate the party’s willingness to face the polls again.

“If you’re a competent student and the examiner cancels your results, you shouldn’t be afraid to go back and rewrite,” he said. “The NDC will return to the people of Ablekuma North, plead with them in one accord, and seek their mandate again. We believe that in those 19 polling stations, they will vote to make up the difference.”

The EC has scheduled the rerun for Friday, July 11, 2025. The Commission has assured the public of a transparent and peaceful process, with security provided by the Ghana Police Service.

Gbande alleging that the NPP had previously attempted to use the Electoral Commission to “steal” the Ablekuma North seat.

“Ablekuma North is one of the seats the NPP sought to use the EC to steal from the NDC. We’re simply going back to do what the law requires us to do,” he said.

The rerun is expected to be a high-stakes contest, as both major parties intensify efforts to secure a crucial parliamentary seat in the Greater Accra Region.
