Accra, Aug. 16, GNA – The Catholic Archbishop of Accra has urged President John Mahama to use his executive powers to bring an end to illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
Most Reverend John Bonaventure Kwofie described galamsey as a “devilish business” that continues to destroy human lives, farmlands and water bodies across the country.
The Archbishop made the call in a homily during a Eucharistic celebration to mark the Feast of the Assumption of Mary at the Christ the King Parish in Accra.
Most Rev. Bonaventure said the rising number of deaths linked to the practice required urgent and decisive intervention from the highest office.
He recalled that as far back as the 1980s, the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference had actively campaigned against galamsey through peaceful marches and public advocacy.
“Sadly, our persistent voices seemed to have fallen on deaf ears, as the practice continues with devastating consequences,” he said.
Most Rev. Bonaventure stressed that while mining could contribute meaningfully to national development if done responsibly, the current scale of illegal mining was unsustainable and posed a direct threat to future generations.
“We are pleading with the President to act. Enough lives have been lost, and the time has come to stop this destructive practice once and for all,” he added.
Galamsey has been widely blamed for polluting major rivers such as the Pra, Ankobra and Offin, which serve as vital sources of drinking water for millions.
Farmers in several affected regions have also reported losing farmlands to irresponsible mining activity.
Although various governments have launched anti-galamsey campaigns, including the deployment of the military-led Operation Vanguard, the results have been limited, with the activity persisting despite arrests and equipment seizures.
The Church’s call adds to ongoing appeals from civil society groups, traditional authorities and environmental advocates for stricter law enforcement and the promotion of alternative livelihoods for the youth.
On August 6, eight individuals – including senior government officials and military personnel – died in a helicopter crash while on a mission to launch a new initiative against illegal mining in the Adansi Akrofuom area of the Ashanti Region.
Pius Enam Hadzide, aide to New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Dr. Bryan Acheampong, says the campaign remains confident of victory in the party’s presidential primaries set for January 31, 2026, despite recent polling figures suggesting otherwise.
Speaking in an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Friday August 22, Hadzide dismissed concerns over a new Global Info Analytics poll that showed Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia leading with 52% support, followed by Kennedy Agyapong with 17%, and Dr. Acheampong with just 3%.
In a bold projection, Hadzide said the campaign team believes delegates will ultimately rally behind Dr. Acheampong as the most suitable candidate to secure victory for the NPP in the 2028 general elections.
“We are confident that by 31st of January 2026, when NPP goes to the polls, the delegates will be convinced that if indeed we are looking for victory in the 2028 elections, then the candidate we must elect is none other than young, bold, decisive, deliverer, Dr. Bryan Acheampong,” Hadzide declared. “We are confident of a victory in January.”
While acknowledging the results of recent polls, Hadzide earlier described such research as potentially misleading and sometimes politically motivated.
“I don’t know about it, but many of these researches are a psychological operation sometimes sponsored by politicians who seek to deceive unsuspecting audiences and to create a misleading impression,” he said, responding to the Global Info Analytics poll.

The committee established by the Ministry of Health to investigate the alleged assault on health workers at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge) is set to submit its report on Monday, August 25, 2025.
This was confirmed by Tony Goodman, the Head of Communications at the Health Ministry, during an interview on The Big Issue on Saturday, August 23.

Goodman stated that the committee, which was formed by health minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has completed its work.
“Yesterday, we were ready with the report. By Monday, the team will submit the report to the minister,” Goodman said.
He explained that the committee examined various aspects of the incident, including “the system issues, the cause of the delay, and what exactly happened at the hospital.”
It would be recalled that the health minister mandated the committee to complete its investigation within one week, following public outrage over a viral video that showed a violent altercation between a patient’s relatives and medical staff in the hospital’s emergency department.

The incident has raised significant concerns about the safety of health professionals, especially in high-stress environments.
In a related development, Rejoice Tsotso Bortei, a nurse who was allegedly assaulted during the incident, has filed a GHS 7 million civil lawsuit against “Ralph De Fellow Ghanaian.”
The lawsuit is for alleged physical assault and defamation.

“My main focus is on the Human Development Index, ensuring that we develop the human resource in the constituency. Once one has the ability, they can perform any task in this world to survive economically,” he stated.
Dr. Amoah further emphasised that the scholarship programme is not limited to supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) but is open to all deserving students, regardless of political affiliation.
“The scholarship is not party-specific, but I must be honest with you: NPP members benefit more because they apply. When they apply, we don’t even know their background, but we give to all of them.
“We don’t look at faces, we don’t look at height, and we don’t look at one’s social status. We only ensure that we have enough resources to support students in tertiary institutions,” he added.

The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, has shared a heartfelt message of comfort with the families of the sixteen children who tragically perished in a road accident while returning home from a church program.
The accident occurred on Monday, July 28, along the Juaso-Nkawkaw stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway, as the children were returning from the annual gathering of the Saviour Church of Ghana, Obogu branch, in the Asante Akyem South Municipality.
As part of her birthday celebration, Madam Obuobia visited the bereaved families and the church community to commiserate with them, offering both words of encouragement and donations worth thousands of cedis.

“I know this incident will challenge your faith. You’ll ask why, especially when these children were just returning from the presence of God after serving Him. But in all things, God has His ways and His timing.”
Madam Obuobia also shared her own personal struggles to strengthen the families’ faith:
“From January till date, I’ve known no peace. I’ve been tested in many ways. Yet, I go before God daily, asking for His strength and light. It is only His grace that keeps me standing.”
She encouraged the families to see this tragedy as a test of faith, she said.
“Take this incident as God testing your faith and waiting to see if you can stand the test of time. And I pray that the Lord gives you the strength to bear this huge loss.”
Her visit, marked by both compassion and generosity, left many comforted as she stood with the bereaved during their darkest hour.

The Greater Accra Chairman of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Jefferson Asare, has urged nurses to step away from unsafe work environments if they feel threatened, following last week’s violent assault on staff at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge).
Speaking on The Big Issue on Saturday, August 23, Asare stressed that the Labour Act empowers health workers to protect themselves when their safety is at risk.
“This information is to every nurse: at any point in time when you feel the environment in which you serve is not safe, please take yourself out of that environment. The Labour Act supports this — it is explicit that if the environment is harmful, you must take yourself off it, not necessarily go home,” he said.
He disclosed that Ridge Hospital alone has recorded no fewer than five separate attacks on nurses this year, describing the trend as deeply troubling.
“I am not saying they shouldn’t go to work again. But if you have about 50 rowdy men in the small space of the emergency ward, and you still stand there to work, they can kill you. In such cases, put yourself out of that environment,” he cautioned.
The comments follow a viral video showing a violent clash between relatives of a patient and staff at Ridge’s emergency department, which has reignited public concern over the safety of health workers.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has since set up a committee to investigate the incident, directing it to submit its report by Monday, August 25.
Meanwhile, one of the victims, nurse Rejoice Tsotso Bortei, has filed a GHS 7 million civil lawsuit against social media personality Ralph Saint Williams, also known as Ralph De Fellow Ghanaian, for alleged assault and defamation linked to the incident.
Chief of Staff Julius Debrah on Saturday, August 23, led the opening of the much-awaited 2025 JoySports Invitational Tournament with a 5km health walk through the streets of Legon.

Professor of Finance at the University of Ghana Business School, Professor Godfred Alufar Bokpin, has heavily criticised both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what he calls the “poor management” of Ghana’s cocoa sector.
Speaking on the JoyNews program Newsfile on Saturday, August 23, Professor Bokpin argued that successive governments have failed farmers and the nation through short-sighted policies and politically motivated pricing.

“Both the NPP and NDC owe Ghanaians an apology big time for their handling of the sector,” he asserted.
According to the economist, the recent controversy over the new cocoa producer price is merely a symptom of a deeper, systemic problem.
He stated that the cocoa industry, once the backbone of Ghana’s economy, has been weakened by a lack of investment, poor transparency, and an unsustainable pricing model that fails to adequately reward farmers for their hard work.

“We cannot continue like this. Farmers are treated unfairly, promises are made and broken, and the sector is left vulnerable,” he said.
Professor Bokpin called for a bipartisan approach to reform the cocoa sector, emphasising that the industry needs a “structural overhaul, accountability, and a new vision that treats farmers as true stakeholders” to survive and remain competitive globally.

The Executive Secretary of the Bureau of Public Safety, Dr. Nana Yaw Akwada, has criticised Ridge Hospital’s leadership following the recent assault on nurses, insisting that the Medical Director should have already been relieved of her post.
Dr. Akwada said the August 17 attack, in which relatives of a patient allegedly assaulted staff at the hospital’s emergency unit, highlights a serious breach in hospital security that warrants accountability.
“If I were the Minister of Health, considering all this talk about accountability, the Medical Director would be cooling off at home by now to start with — because security has been breached,” he said in an interview on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, August 23.
He further questioned why a major hospital like Ridge, situated in the capital and designated as a regional facility, still lacks proper security infrastructure in 2025.
“It doesn’t make sense to me that in 2025, a hospital such as Ridge has no security systems in place,” he stated.
Dr. Akwada added that removing the Medical Director would have sent a strong message to healthcare leaders nationwide about the importance of safeguarding staff and patients.
“The Medical Director should be cooling off at home, and it should send a signal to all medical directors to put in place proper security systems within their health facilities to ensure that these things do not occur,” he emphasised.

The Head of Communications at the Ministry of Health, Tony Goodman, has rejected suggestions that Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh was aware of Ralph St. William’s identity prior to shaking hands with the social media activist accused of assaulting a health worker.
The clarification comes after a video circulated showing the minister exchanging pleasantries with the suspect at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, shortly after meeting hospital authorities over the alleged incident. The viral footage followed a violent altercation between relatives of a patient and medical staff at the hospital’s emergency department.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Saturday, August 23, Mr. Goodman explained that the minister only realised the activist’s identity after the handshake.
“After the handshake, I told the minister that this is the Ralph guy, and he asked me if I was sure. I confirmed, and he then questioned him on why he did that. Ralph responded that he would come to the office to explain. So, for anybody to think that the handshake came after the action, it is wrong. He didn’t know the guy until I prompted him,” Mr. Goodman stated.
He added that the minister was merely extending courtesy expected of a public official and was not endorsing the alleged assault. The International Transport Summit 2025, currently underway at the Moscow Situation Centre, has brought together more than 120 international delegates from 40 megacities across the CIS, Middle East, Asia, Africa and Latin America.
The high-level gathering features mayors, ministers of transport and digitalisation, leaders of technology and transport companies, independent experts, and representatives of academic and research institutions.

The second edition of the Democracy Cup will now be held at the University of Ghana Stadium, following a change in venue and date announced by Parliament.
Originally slated for August 29 at the Accra Sports Stadium, the fixture has been rescheduled to September 5 and will see Accra Hearts of Oak lock horns with city rivals Accra Great Olympics.
The Democracy Cup, an initiative of Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, uses football as a platform to promote the values of democracy, unity, and civic engagement.
Explaining the decision, Parliament stated, “The decision to reschedule was made after careful consideration to ensure optimal facilities, security, and a premier experience for spectators, players, and supporters nationwide.
“The University of Ghana Sports Stadium offers premier amenities and a capacious environment to host this high-profile contest in the spirit of fair play, sportsmanship, and peaceful civic engagement.”
Last year’s inaugural edition was held at the Accra Sports Stadium, where Asante Kotoko narrowly defeated Hearts of Oak to lift the trophy.
Ghanaian media personality MzGee has revealed that her decision to resign from TV3 was influenced by a death prophecy she received in 2021.
Speaking on her Gee O’clock show, shared on social media on August 22, 2025, MzGee explained that the prophecy, delivered in her absence at an Assemblies of God Church, specifically mentioned a female television presenter on a reality show whose life was in danger.

The media personality clarified that her resignation had nothing to do with speculation of jealousy or conflict with colleagues. Instead, it was a personal decision to safeguard her life.
She further noted that while she acknowledges the existence of charlatans in the prophetic space, she believes that prophecies should not be taken lightly.

Somebody close to you who works with a TV station, a woman, for that matter, pray. Because I see somebody on a TV reality show, and the person’s life is in danger, a fair, tall lady.’”

Jonathan Boye-Doku is the chairman of Harbour View Estate Residents Association
The Harbour View Estate Residents Association has raised concerns over the ongoing demolition exercise at the Sakumo Ramsar Site, stating that it has destroyed more than 10.5 acres of land, amounting to 40 residential plots.
The demolitions, which began on August 4, 2025, are being carried out by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to remove unauthorised structures within the protected wetland.
The exercise covered areas including Communities 5, 6, 10, 11, and 12.
In a citinewsroom.com report on August 22, 2025, authorities argued that the move is necessary to stop encroachment and preserve the Ramsar site, which serves as an important ecological buffer and wildlife habitat.

Chairman of the Association, Jonathan Boye-Doku, described the impact as significant and called for broader consultation with stakeholders.
“The demolition of land at the Ramsar site impacted about 10.5 acres of properties, that is 40 plots. That is quite a lot. With Sakumono, we have two things at play: Sakumono as a Ramsar site and Sakumono as a government-acquired site. Which one are we fighting for? If it is Ramsar, then we must sit down and see the best way to solve the problem,” he said.
He added that residents are not opposed to government’s efforts but are advocating a ‘win-win solution’ that balances urbanisation with environmental preservation.
“We are not saying government should abandon the project and leave us to do whatever we want. We are looking at balancing urbanisation and ecological effect so that at the end of the day, it is a win-win for all of us,” he stated.
The residents stated that they have petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to intervene in the matter, emphasising that any solution must preserve the original purpose of the Ramsar site as a model for sustainable development.

Professor of Finance and Economist at the University of Ghana Business School, Professor Godfred Alufar Bokpin, has criticised both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their poor management of Ghana’s cocoa sector.
He argued that successive governments had consistently failed farmers, traders, and the nation as a whole through short-sighted policies and politically motivated pricing regimes.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Prof. Bokpin said the latest controversy surrounding the newly announced cocoa producer price was only a symptom of a deeper problem.
“Both the NPP and NDC owe Ghanaians an apology big time for their handling of the sector,” he asserted, adding that farmers continue to bear the brunt of political expediency.
He explained that Ghana’s cocoa industry, once the backbone of the economy, has been weakened by poor investment, lack of transparency, and an unsustainable pricing model that fails to reward the toil of farmers.
“We cannot continue like this. Farmers are treated unfairly, promises are made and broken, and the sector is left vulnerable. Both parties have questions to answer, and they must be honest with Ghanaians,” he said.
Prof. Bokpin called for a bipartisan approach to reforming the cocoa sector to ensure farmers receive fair compensation and Ghana retains its competitive position globally.
“The industry cannot survive on token increases and political gimmicks. We need a structural overhaul, accountability, and a new vision that treats farmers as true stakeholders,” he urged.
The committee set up by the Ministry of Health to investigate the alleged assault on health workers at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge) is expected to submit its report on Monday, August 25, 2025.
This was disclosed by the Head of Communications at the Health Ministry, Tony Goodman, during an appearance on The Big Issue on Saturday, August 23.
He explained that the committee, constituted by Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has completed its work and will present its findings as scheduled.
“By yesterday, we were ready with the report. By Monday, the team will submit the report to the minister. The committee looked into the system issues, the cause of the delay, and what exactly happened at the hospital,” Mr. Goodman stated.
The Health Minister last week directed the committee to complete its work within one week, following public uproar over a viral video that captured the violent altercation between some relatives of a patient and medical staff at Ridge Hospital’s emergency department.
The incident has triggered widespread concern about the safety of health professionals in the line of duty, particularly in high-pressure environments such as emergency wards.
Meanwhile, Rejoice Tsotso Bortei, a nurse at Ridge Hospital who was assaulted during the violent incident, has filed a GHS 7 million civil lawsuit against “Ralph De Fellow Ghanaian” for alleged physical assault and defamation.
US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said on Friday that the federal government will take a 10% stake in US chipmaker Intel.
“This historic agreement strengthens US leadership in semiconductors, which will both grow our economy and help secure America’s technological edge,” Lutnick wrote on X in a post accompanied by a photo of himself with Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan.
President Donald Trump revealed the deal earlier on Friday during remarks in the Oval Office, calling it a “great deal for them”.
Shares of the Santa Clara, California-based chipmaker soared more than 5% on Friday.
Intel said in a statement that the US government would make a $8.9bn (£6.6bn) investment in Intel common stock.
The funds were set to come from grants that were previously awarded but not yet paid, Intel said, including monies promised under the US CHIPS and Science Act which was passed during President Joe Biden’s administration.
“As the only semiconductor company that does leading-edge logic R&D and manufacturing in the US, Intel is deeply committed to ensuring the world’s most advanced technologies are American made,” Mr Tan said in a statement.
“President Trump’s focus on US chip manufacturing is driving historic investments in a vital industry that is integral to the country’s economic and national security,” he added.
The CHIPS Act was passed with the aim of reshoring chip manufacturing in the United States.
Intel has struggled in recent years to build out more chip capacity and has fallen far behind rival Nvidia whose market cap has soared past the $4tn mark while Intel’s has languished around $100bn.
The one-time Silicon Valley icon has failed to capitalise on the development of mobile technology and, more recently, artificial intelligence which Nvidia has dominated.
Under attack
Intel had found itself in US President Donald Trump’s crosshairs in recent weeks.
Earlier this month, Trump called on Mr Tan to immediately resign, accusing him of having problematic ties to China.
Trump called Mr Tan “highly conflicted” for alleged investments in companies which the US says are linked to the Chinese military.
Mr Tan referred to the accusations as “misinformation” in a note sent to Intel staff, in which he defended himself and said he had “always operated within the highest legal and ethical standards.”
Mr Tan is a US citizen born in Malaysia and raised in Singapore.
It is legal for Americans to invest in Chinese firms.
Trump’s attack came after Republican Senator Tom Cotton delivered a letter to Intel’s board raising similar concerns and questioning the company’s ability to be a “responsible steward of American taxpayer dollars and to comply with applicable security regulations”.
Mr Tan visited the White House to meet with Trump after the president’s attacks.
A ‘creative idea’
Friday’s announcement comes after White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called the proposal “a creative idea that’s never been done before” earlier in the week.
The Trump administration recently ordered Nvidia and AMD to give the government a 15% cut of the revenue from AI chip sales to China, according to reports.
While the approach is considered unusual, Jacob Feldgoise, a Senior Data Research Analyst at Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology, drew parallels between the equity stake and the previous approach of giving Intel grant funding.
“It’s still in service of the same overall objective which is taking a more direct role in private markets to advance US economic and national security objectives, particularly around maintaining technological leadership – or really regaining it – when it comes to semiconductor manufacturing,” Mr Feldgoise told the BBC.
The deal is considered rare in the modern era, but not without precedent.
During the Great Financial Crisis in 2008, the US government took a majority stake in automaker General Motors which was poised to enter into bankruptcy protection.
It eventually exited its position, incurring a loss of about $10bn.
Mr Feldgoise said the Trump administration took a similar approach earlier this year in a deal with MP Materials, a Nevada-based company that mines rare earth metals.
That agreement has come under scrutiny from public-interest watchdog groups amid revelations that the Department of Defense depended on a Cold War-era law to circumvent procurement and contracting laws.

Private legal practitioner and activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for appointing Malik Basintale into a ‘bureaucratic’ role, describing the move as a strategic blunder.
In a post shared on his X page on Saturday, August 23, 2025, Barker-Vormawor argued that Basintale’s real political value lies in his ability to mobilise the grassroots and energise young people, not in handling government contracts and bureaucratic duties in Accra.

Barker-Vormawor pointed out the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene as an example of the energy the NDC should be maintaining nationwide.
“See what Dr Frank Amoakohene is doing in Ashanti? That’s the energy (x 16) you need to maintain generational enthusiasm”, he added.
He urged the NDC to return Basintale to the streets with the resources to sustain mobilisation full-time, adding that such bold moves may be uncomfortable for some politicians but are essential for the party’s long-term growth.

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Wisdom Yayra Koku Deku, has said the proposed amendment to the NIA Act 707 will redefine the operational structure of the Authority.
He stated categorically that the NIA will be placed permanently under the Ministry of Interior.
Also, the bill, when passed by parliament will give security agencies the access to NIA’s database.
This move, he explained, is expected to enhance the tracking of suspects and streamline identity verification processes.
This means that law enforcement officers will be able to utilise the NIA database to track suspects more efficiently, including the ability to annotate ID cards with relevant information during investigations.

He argued that Aboagye lacks the authority to speak on behalf of the NPP regarding his political future.
Adorye also took a swipe at Aboagye’s political relevance, questioning his contributions to the party’s earlier struggles.
“Where was Miracles Aboagye when we were suffering for the party?” he asked, while pointing to the sacrifices he and others made long before Aboagye was appointed a Municipal Chief Executive.

The camp of New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful Dr. Bryan Acheampong has downplayed the significance of the latest Global Info Analytics survey ahead of the January 31, 2026, primaries.
His aide, former Deputy Information Minister Pius Enam Hadzide, has described the poll as a psychological operation.
The survey released on Thursday, August 21, sampled 2,656 delegates nationwide between August 12 and 20.
It shows former Vice President and 2024 NPP presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia commanding 52% support among delegates, giving him a decisive edge over his rivals.
His closest challenger, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, trails far behind with 17%. Other aspirants fared poorly, with Dr. Acheampong polling 3%, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum 1%, and former General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong, Boakye Agyarko, and Addai Nimo each recording less than 1%.
In an interview on Accra-based Citi FM, Mr. Hadzide cast doubt on the credibility of political polls, arguing that they can sometimes be manipulated.
“I don’t know about it, but many of these researches are a psychological operation sometimes sponsored by politicians who seek to deceive unsuspecting audiences and to create a misleading impression,” he said.
However, he explained that the Acheampong campaign treats all such findings as constructive.
“Our attitude at the Bryan Acheampong campaign is that all research, wherever they are coming from, we take it as feedback… and if there are any gaps, we work on those,” he added.
Hadzide also stressed that the Abetifi MP and former Minister for Food and Agriculture’s relatively late entry into the race should be considered when assessing his numbers.
“We are very confident that Dr. Bryan Acheampong is not only the fastest-growing contender in this race; published research has also confirmed this,” he stated.

President John Dramani Mahama has called for renewed Japanese investment in Ghana’s cocoa sector, proposing a public-private partnership (PPP) with the cocoa processing company to revamp its facilities and deepen value addition.
The appeal was made during a high-level meeting with Japanese Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Ghana–Japan cooperation.
In a tweet sighted by GhanaWeb Business, President Mahama said; “I met with the Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to advance Ghana–Japan cooperation in three key areas: Cocoa and value addition, Strategic infrastructure and People-to-people ties.”
He added, “With Ghana supplying about 70% of Japan’s cocoa imports, we invited Japanese investment and a PPP with the Cocoa Processing Company to revamp the plant and deepen processing in Ghana.”

The Head of Communications at the Ministry of Health, Tony Goodman, has rejected suggestions that Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh was aware of Ralph St. William’s identity prior to shaking hands with the social media activist accused of assaulting a health worker.
The clarification comes after a video circulated showing the minister exchanging pleasantries with the suspect at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, shortly after meeting hospital authorities over the alleged incident. The viral footage followed a violent altercation between relatives of a patient and medical staff at the hospital’s emergency department.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Saturday, August 23, Mr. Goodman explained that the minister only realised the activist’s identity after the handshake.
“After the handshake, I told the minister that this is the Ralph guy, and he asked me if I was sure. I confirmed, and he then questioned him on why he did that. Ralph responded that he would come to the office to explain. So, for anybody to think that the handshake came after the action, it is wrong. He didn’t know the guy until I prompted him,” Mr. Goodman stated.
He added that the minister was merely extending courtesy expected of a public official and was not endorsing the alleged assault. Mr. Goodman also noted that Ralph’s behaviour was unsettling, observing that the activist was “laughing and shaking hands with everybody,” which prompted him to step back.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh had earlier defended his actions during a press briefing on Thursday, August 21, insisting that the handshake was part of his duties as a public servant and should not be misinterpreted.

The maiden edition of the Ampem Educamp 2025 for form 2 Junior High Students in the Asuogyaman District has ended with the 400 participating students expressing great enthusiasm about the training they have acquired during their two-weeks camping.
The camping which was a brain child of Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament (MP) for Asuogyaman, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, was launched as a bold educational initiative aimed at sharpening the skills of junior high school students in the district.
The maiden edition of the Ampem Educamp 2025 was held at the Akosombo International School, bringing together 400 top-performing JHS 2 students from 70 schools, both public and private.
The two-week intensive academic Educamp, which runs from August 10 to 24, focuses on English, Mathematics, and Science — subjects critical for success in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
According to the MP, the camp was born out of concern for the declining performance of students in the district at the JHS level. “I sat with the education directorate and agreed that the best way to motivate and sharpen the abilities of our brightest students is to create this camp. We brought five of the best students from each school to prepare them to do better,” Mr. Nyarko explained.
The Educamp features interactive problem-solving drills, mentorship sessions, and career coaching, facilitated by some of the best educators in the district.
The MP emphasized that while the initiative may not resolve all of Asuogyaman’s educational challenges, it will serve as a stepping stone toward academic excellence and leadership development. The MP over 2,000 exercise books, mathematical sets and 400 science and maths textbooks, and other learning materials to the participants.
The highlight of the maiden edition was the recognition of outstanding performers, with Zoe Kudo Yayra emerging as the overall best student after an examination.
Mr. Nyarko commended teachers for their commitment and encouraged the students to apply the knowledge gained during the camp to achieve better results in their BECE. “Education is the key to growth, and I am pleased to help our students succeed,” he said.
On her part, the District Education Director, Augustina Adwoa Owusu, praised the MP’s interventions, describing them as timely and impactful. She also underscored the declining level of education with its abysmal performance during BECE examinations in the District.
However, she averted that the interventions being rolled out by the MP are surest ways of helping solve some of the challenges the district faces.
She also mentions infrastructure deficit as a major problem; which she revealed, also caught the attention of the MP who had constructed school blocks and renovated some others to make teaching and learning conducive for both teachers and students.
Augustina Adwoa Owusu expressed hopes that with the Educamp in motion, Asuogyaman district will become one of the districts that will be churning out best students.

Former Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, has criticised the handling of the recent assault on health workers at Ridge Hospital, saying the incident reflects a deep systemic failure in Ghana’s healthcare security framework.
Speaking on Channel One TV‘s The Big Issueon Saturday August 23, he noted that in other countries, such a breach of hospital safety would have warranted the resignation of the Health Minister, regardless of political affiliation.
“In other jurisdictions, trust me, the minister would have resigned—Australia, other jurisdictions—because of this incident. It’s not about [Health Minister] Akandoh. It is about the fact that this is a system failure,” he said.
His comments follow the violent altercation on August 17, where nurses and medical staff at Ridge Hospital’s emergency unit were assaulted by relatives of a patient, sparking public outrage and renewed calls for better hospital security.
Dr Kissi, who is also a medical doctor, said the lack of adequate security in emergency areas in health facilities is unacceptable and pointed to a broader issue that goes beyond any individual minister.
“Hospitals should have good security to begin with—especially emergency areas,” he stressed. “There was a flaw in security system at Ridge.”
He also criticised the Health Ministry’s response, particularly the lack of thorough briefing and engagement with those directly affected before the Minister’s visit to the hospital.
“I’m not happy with the preparation before the minister visited the hospital. There should be appropriate briefing which should have involved the characters involved.”
Meanwhile, Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has set up a committee to investigate the Ridge Hospital incident, giving them a one-week ultimatum to present their findings and recommendations.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has declined a request from Okaikwei Central MP Patrick Yaw Boamah to be removed from Ghana’s delegation to the Pan-African Parliament.
Boamah, who had been added to the delegation as an observer, raised concerns in a memo to the Speaker, questioning the basis of his designation and referencing the agreed formula for selection by the Minority Caucus.
“Speaker, I respectfully write to formally withdraw from the reconstituted list of Ghana’s delegation to the Pan-African Parliament as an Observer, as adopted by the House in a resolution on Tuesday, 22nd July, 2025, as evidenced in the copy of the attached votes and proceedings of Tuesday, 22nd July, 2025,” he wrote.
He explained that, according to the Pan-African Parliament Secretariat, observers are restricted in their participation:
“Mr. Speaker, my checks with the Pan-African Parliament Secretariat indicate that Observers are not permitted to participate at plenary or in committee meetings. Observers are only permitted to attend upon meeting.”
Boamah also argued that, by the established formula for committees and delegations, he is entitled to be a full member. The Minority Caucus is allocated two representatives, following the 68:32 ratio used for parliamentary committee assignments and ECOWAS Parliament delegation selections.
“Mr. Speaker, under the established formula for committees and delegations, my inclusion is by right, as the Minority Caucus is entitled to two representatives. The 68:32 ratio, which guided the allocation of committee memberships equally, applied in constituting the ECOWAS Parliament delegation,” he maintained.
The MP said he opted to withdraw as an observer to avoid “any potential embarrassment to the Parliament of Ghana and Ghanaians as a whole.”
The current Ghanaian delegation to the Pan-African Parliament is led by First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor, with Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, Collins Dauda, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, and Frank Annoh-Dompreh as full members. Boamah had been designated as an observer.
In response, Speaker Bagbin acknowledged Boamah’s concerns but insisted that Parliament’s resolution remains binding. He emphasised that any changes would require a substantive motion.
“As you are aware, the composition of Ghana’s delegation to the Pan-African Parliament was duly adopted by the plenary, following the established procedures of the House.
