Gov’t to build new public technical university in Western Region – Pres. Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that his government will build a new public technical university in the Western Region to expand access to technical and vocational education for young people.

In a speech at the Jubilee House during a courtesy call by the Paramount Chief of the Essikado Traditional Area, Nana Kobina Nketsia V, and other members of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, President Mahama said the new university forms part of a broader plan to prepare the region’s youth for emerging job opportunities in mining, oil and gas, agribusiness, and digital industries.

He explained that the technical university will be designed to meet the practical needs of industries in the region and across the country.

According to him, this move is crucial to Ghana’s long-term development goals, especially as the Western Region continues to contribute significantly to the national economy through natural resources.

“The Western Region holds immense potential to lead Ghana into a new era of industrialization and job creation. But we must equip our young people with the right skills. That is why we are building a new public technical university here” the President intimated.

He added that this new institution will work alongside other youth-focused programs, including a region-wide employment initiative focused on agri-tech, tourism, green jobs, and digital entrepreneurship.

President Mahama revealed plans to upgrade the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital into a modern teaching hospital that will serve as a referral center for the Western and Western North regions.

This, he said, would improve healthcare delivery and provide training grounds for medical students.

He assured the chiefs that these initiatives would help bridge development gaps and ensure that the youth in the region have better access to education, training, and jobs.

The President urged the chiefs to support these efforts by promoting peace, unity, and development in their communities.

Gospel artistes should focus on ministry, not money – Kofi Owusu Peprah

Gospel musician Kofi Owusu Peprah has urged his fellow gospel artistes to shift their focus from making money to spreading the message of God’s love.

The singer believes that the true calling of a gospel musician is to share the gospel, not to chase personal financial gain.

In an interview on Joy Prime TV, he explained that gospel musicians are called to minister, not to operate like business people.

He encouraged artistes to be flexible and considerate, especially when churches or individuals reach out to them for performances.

“We have not been called to make money. My plea is that as Christians, we shouldn’t be so rigid and hard-fisted about how people should reach you. You need to consider a lot of things, like the size of the church. Let’s not be so strict; it’s not cast in stone. If you had to put a charge on the message of the cross, how much would it be? You can’t put a price on the cross,” he said.

While he acknowledged that gospel musicians need resources to carry out their work, he also urged churches and event organisers to play their part by offering fair compensation.

According to him, musicians often have to pay instrumentalists, sound engineers, and other support staff, so proper planning and mutual understanding are important.

He added that when someone is truly led by the Holy Spirit, they will naturally see the value in supporting gospel artistes for their service.

“If anybody invites you and the person truly has the Holy Spirit in him or her, the person wouldn’t have a problem with some of these things,” he said.

Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang congratulates Black Queens on their victory Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang congratulates Black Queens on their victory

After a stellar performance at the 2024 WAFCON, Ghana’s Black Queens have received a heartfelt congratulatory message from the Vice President, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.

The team’s bronze medal victory has filled the nation with excitement and pride, and the Vice President’s statement reflects the widespread appreciation of their efforts.

The congratulatory message of the Vice President, Opoku-Agyemang, was relayed to the team at a dinner celebration in Accra on July 29, 2025.

“We’re not surprised at all. We gladly congratulate you and know that you can achieve even more as you move forward. We want to encourage you to continue doing your best,” she stated.

The Vice President praised the team’s resilience, skill, and determination throughout the tournament.

“It wasn’t long ago when we witnessed the Black Queens encouraging young girls in football. There are times when we all need to recognise that we are all ordinary people, regardless of gender. When given the opportunity, we can express ourselves in ways that are both acceptable and legally permissible,” she added.

Her remarks stressed the importance of the team’s achievement in inspiring young girls and women throughout the country.

“I want to congratulate you once again. As you continue forward, remember that while you are the Black Queens, many people have contributed to your success. Your parents have played a role, as have your friends. As you acknowledge others, let’s not forget the coaches, photographers, musicians, and all the behind-the-scenes including individuals who have made this journey possible. Sometimes, we stand in the spotlight, but many faceless people have paved the way for us. Moving forward, we must ensure that we create opportunities for the Black Queens to reach their full potential,” she emphasised.

The government’s dedication to supporting women’s sports and the Black Queens’ future efforts will significantly influence WAFCON.

“This is a dinner celebration, and I don’t want to stand between you and your meal by speaking too long. We are here to congratulate you and to encourage you to keep up the good work,” she said.

The team’s success has ignited renewed optimism and enthusiasm for women’s football in Ghana.

Gov’t caps cement price at GH¢95 for all road projects – Roads Minister

0

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has said new procurement directives to help address inefficiencies and inflated costs have been introduced in the road construction sector, starting with a price ceiling on cement supplied for government-funded projects.

Speaking at the government’s weekly press briefings dubbed “Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, Mr Agbodza said suppliers providing cement to government contractors must not charge more than GH¢95 per 50kg bag. The move is aimed at reducing inflated input costs that have affected project delivery.

“Some contractors are being forced to buy cement at over GH¢120 a bag, even when delivering public works. That is unacceptable. We are drawing the line,” he said.

The cement pricing policy forms part of broader procurement reforms under the current administration. Mr Agbodza said the aim is to ensure value for money, stop unregulated contract awards, and prevent politically motivated project cost inflation.

“People walk into my office daily with unsolicited packages, throwing documents for me to sign. That era is over. Only programmed and budgeted projects will go forward,” he said.

Mr Agbodza attributed many of the cost overruns and poor outcomes in past projects to the design-and-build model, which he said allowed contracts to be awarded without prior engineering designs or cost estimates.

Under the revised approach, all major road projects, including those under the government’s Big Push programme, will be designed, costed, and approved internally by state technical agencies before any procurement begins.

“For the first time, road project costing will come from government agencies, not private contractors. This means no more bloated budgets or political padding,” Mr Agbodza said.

He added that delays in the processing of payment certificates, as well as weak cost controls, had caused many contractors to abandon sites, especially in regions where material costs continued to rise unchecked.

The Ministry of Roads and Highways is also expected to introduce new measures to standardise procurement timelines, track contractor pricing electronically, and improve supervision of ongoing works.

The cement pricing directive takes immediate effect for all projects funded by the central government through the Ministry.

Mr Agbodza said these reforms are aimed at restoring public confidence in the sector and ensuring that the use of public funds results in visible and durable infrastructure, especially at a time when national resources are limited.

Bank of Ghana tightens rules on remittances amid compliance failures

0

By Jibril Abdul Mumuni

Accra, July 30, GNA– The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced stricter measures against Banks, Dedicated Electronic Money Issuers (DEMIs), Enhanced Payment Service Providers (EPSPs), and Money Transfer Operators (MTOs).

This comes as part of the ongoing fight against non-compliance with inward remittance guidelines.

In a notice signed by Ms. Sandra Thompson, Secretary at the central bank, the bank observed persistent violations of the Foreign Exchange Act, 2006, and the Updated Guidelines for Inward Remittance Services by Payment Service Providers, despite previous cautions.

The BoG has observed continued infractions, which include the termination of inward remittances using unapproved channels, engagement in Foreign Exchange Swaps within the context of Inward Remittance Business.

Other violations, according to the central bank, included the termination of remittances on behalf of institutions without prior approval from the Bank of Ghana and the application of unprescribed Forex Exchange rates.

The Bank of Ghana has emphasized its commitment to sanctioning any violating institution and terminating the remittance partnerships of all MTOs whose operations were not in compliance with the approved guidelines.

To ensure strict adherence, the BoG has reiterated that the funding of the Local Settlement Account should be strictly done in accordance with section 7.1 (c) of the Updated Guidelines for Inward Remittance Services by Payment Service Providers.

The central bank also instructed that all disbursements shall be from the Local Settlement Account as stated in section 7.2 (a) of the Updated Guidelines for Inward Remittance Services by Payment Service Providers.

It also said DEMIs/EPSPs should also ensure that pre-funding arrangements with the Settlement Bank shall be done in accordance with section 7.2 (b) of the Updated Guidelines for Inward Remittance Services by Payment Service Providers.

In the bid to ensure transparency and accountability in the foreign exchange and remittance ecosystem, all Banks, DEMIs, and EPSPs are now expressly directed to submit weekly reports per MTO.

These comprehensive reports must detail daily individual inward remittance transactions logs, along with the corresponding daily sum of foreign exchange credited into respective Nostro accounts.

The Bank of Ghana stressed that failure to submit accurate and timely reports constituted a regulatory breach under Section 42 of the Payment Systems and Services Act (Act 987) and Section 93(3) (d) of Act 930, and will attract the appropriate administrative sanctions.

Suspension of Chief Justice part of plot to control courts

CJ Torkornoo was suspended after Council of State concluded she had a case to answer in 3 petitions CJ Torkornoo was suspended after Council of State concluded she had a case to answer in 3 petitions

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned the suspension of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), describing it as a politically motivated act designed to weaken the judiciary and compromise democratic governance.

Addressing a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Asylum Down on Tuesday, July 29, the General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, accused the NDC administration of engaging in a deliberate scheme to take control of the courts and influence judicial outcomes in its favour.

“This disgraceful act is a direct attempt to cripple judicial independence and bend the course of justice to serve the agenda of the ruling party,” he stated.

“Indeed, it is a dangerous precedent that threatens the very foundation of our democracy,” he added.

According to him, this is the first time in Ghana’s democratic history that a sitting Chief Justice has been suspended in such a manner and under circumstances which they believe are both reckless and alarming.

Frimpong Kodua warned that the suspension of the Chief Justice is not an isolated incident but part of a broader political strategy by the government to capture state institutions, beginning with the judiciary.

“It is a well-orchestrated attempt by this government to exert undue influence over our judicial system, and by extension, our democracy,” he alleged.

He also raised concerns about recent judicial rulings which he called “questionable judgments” from some courts in recent weeks.

“We are not surprised by the recent pronouncements of some courts. We live in this country and see what is happening. Some of the judgments delivered are highly questionable,” he said.

Frimpong Kodua urged members of the judiciary to remain firm and impartial in their constitutional duties, cautioning them not to allow political actors to dictate the outcomes of cases.

“They should not allow political parties, particularly the government of the day, to dictate how they administer justice,” he urged.

“You swore an oath of office to protect fundamental human rights and safeguard our Constitution. We call on you to stand by it, abide by it, and not allow political actors to influence your judgments,” he added.

The General Secretary called on civil society organisations, the Ghana Bar Association, and religious leaders to stand firm against what they call an emerging culture of executive overreach.

‘Unaccredited’ Nyarkotey University founder arrested in joint GTEC-CID operation

0

Raphael Nyarkotey Obu, one of the founders of the Nyarkotey University College of Holistic Medicine and Technology, has been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service in collaboration with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

The arrest was made during an intelligence-led operation at the institution’s premises in Ashaiman.

According to GTEC, the institution is operating without accreditation and has been illegally offering a Bachelor of Technology (BTech) programme in Naturopathy and Holistic Medicine with various specialisations, in violation of Ghana’s tertiary education regulations.

Nyarkotey Obu, who identifies as a naturopathic healthcare expert, has been transferred to the CID Headquarters in Accra for further questioning and investigations.

Speaking to Channel One News, GTEC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Jerry Sam Sarfo,  noted that the arrest forms part of broader enforcement actions aimed at safeguarding the credibility of the country’s higher education system.

“Basically, this is something we are doing because there have been persistent calls for people to desist from running unaccredited programmes, but they keep doing it. So there was the need for us to actually enforce,” he said.

GTEC has reaffirmed its commitment to rooting out unlicensed tertiary institutions and has urged the public to verify the accreditation status of schools before enrolling.

Soldiers forced McDan CEO, others to kneel at gunpoint – JoyNews reporter recounts assault

0

The incident occurred while Carlos and his crew were covering the demolition of a warehouse allegedly owned by McDan when heavily armed National Security operatives stormed the site.

“In fact, I was punched. By then, the CEO of McDan Group and his three others were asked to kneel. So they were kneeling at gunpoint,” Carlos revealed on The Pulse on JoyNews.

The journalist says the soldiers believed he had filmed the scene and turned their attention to him and an eyewitness at the scene.

“We tried to capture that moment, we could not, so we left it. But they thought that we had captured the moment when McDan, the CEO, was kneeling with his three others. But then this eyewitness was also somewhere being beaten by other military people.”

Carlos said the military operatives accused the group of interfering in a “lawful demolition,” although McDan himself denied being shown any official documents justifying the operation.

“The initial conversation I heard was that they were being charged for interfering in the lawful demolition. But when we spoke to the CEO, he said they were yet to see any official document from those carrying out the demolition,” Carlos recounted.

Shortly after the confrontation, Carlos was arrested and taken to a National Security facility along with McDan and the others. He says he was later released and driven back to the scene under military escort.

“They gave me a pickup with three military personnel back to the scene. They drove me back to pick my vehicle,” he said. However, even upon return, Carlos says he was subjected to further scrutiny.

“I had my driver’s phone with me, and they demanded to check the visuals on his phone. I had to call the driver to give me the password. Seven armed men stood there while we unlocked and searched the phone.”

The same process was repeated at the National Security office.

“They went through my phones… they really didn’t want me to capture the moment where the CEO was kneeling, which was, I don’t know, a bit demeaning, because guns were pointed at him and his people.”

Minority slams Roads Minister over ‘False’ road figures

0

The Minority in Parliament has accused the Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, of deliberately misrepresenting the actual kilometres of roads constructed under the Akufo-Addo administration.

This comes after the Minister claimed during the accountability series briefing on Wednesday, July 30, that the Akufo-Addo government’s assertion of constructing over 10,000 kilometres of roads is misleading.

The Minority caucus refuted this, stating that between 2017 and 2024, the government completed over 13,000 kilometres of roadworks, including new constructions, asphalt overlays, gravelling, and rehabilitation.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, July 30, former Roads Minister and member of the Roads and Transport Committee, Francis Asenso-Boakye, criticised the current Roads Minister for what he termed as cheap political propaganda aimed at discrediting the former administration’s achievements.

“Today’s comments made by the Minister for Roads, Hon Kwame Agbodza, during his press briefing are not only misleading but reflect a pattern of deliberate distortion and double standard. He claimed Akufo-Addo’s widely acknowledged achievement of road construction is a mirage; this is not only disingenuous but a gross attempt to politicise hard facts.

“Between 2017 and the end of 2024, the Akufo-Addo administration undertook road projects totalling 13,624 kilometres. This is in clear contrast to 4,636 kilometres executed under the Mills-Mahama administration in 8 years,” he said.

The caucus also questioned the Minister’s integrity, citing what they described as a U-turn on his stance toward sole-sourcing procurements.

‘I believe polygamy can solve Africa’s problems’

Actor Jim Iyke says polygamy can solve Africa's problems Actor Jim Iyke says polygamy can solve Africa’s problems

Nigerian actor Jim Iyke has caused a stir on social media after noting that monogamous marriages are the reason Africans are going through several problems.

In an interview with Nana Romeo shared on social media on July 30, 2025, Jim Iyke noted that polygamy, when practiced, can solve Africa’s problems.

He explained that initially, he did not believe in the concept of polygamous relationships; however, after careful analysis and experiences, he thinks it is for the best.

“I used to be dismayed about the concept of it, but I am beginning to be open to it. I think it might just solve the problem of the world. I have seen men who have practiced it, and somehow, I am beginning to see some resemblance to peace,” he stated.

The actor added that monogamy compels men to lie and cheat on their partners.

“Cheating and lying are such a disastrous thing to do. Every time you have to tell a new lie to cover the old one… You would never find peace,” he added.

Buttressing his points, Jim Iyke referred to the Bible, citing individuals who had more than one wife.

According to him, every man of valour in the Bible had more than one wife. He then emphasised the ideology that a man is supposed to marry one woman is a foreign concept for Africans to abandon their ancestral beliefs.

“Every man of note in the Bible had more than one wife. Every man of valour had more than one wife. It is a foreign concept, I think it is a Western concept, when they woke up to say truthfully, a man is built to be with more than one woman,” he stated.

Paul Adom-Otchere ordered to appear before Special Prosecutor over GACL audit deal

Paul Adom-Otchere is a former Board Chairman of the GACL Paul Adom-Otchere is a former Board Chairman of the GACL

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has directed Paul Adom-Otchere, former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), to present himself for questioning over an ongoing investigation into a revenue assurance audit deal.

The broadcaster, who also hosts Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana, has been identified as a suspect in the corruption-related probe.

A formal letter from the OSP, dated July 25, 2025, instructed Adom-Otchere to appear before the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, at the OSP headquarters in Accra on Thursday, July 31, 2025.

The investigation centers on a revenue assurance contract awarded during Adom-Otchere’s tenure as board chair of GACL.

The OSP is probing possible breaches of procurement procedures and potential acts of corruption linked to the deal.

According to myjoyonline.com, Adom-Otchere confirmed receipt of the letter and indicated that his legal team has requested a deferment of the meeting to Monday, August 4, 2025, due to a court engagement in Kumasi.

Paul Adom-Otchere was appointed Chairman of the GACL board in 2021 by then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Prior to that, he served on the board of the National Communications Authority.

This is not the first time his role at the state-owned airports company has drawn public scrutiny.

In 2023, the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) found that he had overstepped his bounds in administrative matters, following an investigation into a Christmas decoration procurement.

How Fidelity bank is rethinking what we throw away

0

If you walk into a Fidelity Bank office today, you might notice something different, not in the branding or the service, but in something as ordinary as a bin. What used to be discarded paper, plastic, or old promotional T-shirt now tells a new story. One of responsibility. One of innovation. One of change.

But this story didn’t start big. It began quietly, in a backroom full of files.

Back in 2018, the Archives team at Fidelity was grappling with a growing mountain of old documents.

The usual method was to wait out the retention period and then destroy the paper, often by burning or shredding.

But that approach was not only energy-draining and wasteful; it also didn’t sit well with the team’s conscience. One of them picked up the phone and asked a simple, powerful question: “Can we turn this waste into something useful?”

That moment of curiosity sparked what is now known bank-wide as the Waste to Cash initiative.

The waste problem we’re facing

Ghana generates over 12,000 tonnes of solid waste every day, with Accra alone contributing more than 3,000 tonnes daily. Yet, only a fraction of this waste is properly collected and recycled.

Most of it ends up in landfills or waterways, releasing methane, a greenhouse gas even more potent than carbon dioxide, and contributing to flooding and public health risks.

At Fidelity, we knew we had a role to play. But more importantly, we saw an opportunity: what if the paper we threw away could be repurposed? What if our internal waste could become part of a solution?

Turning a problem into a possibility

The initial step was modest: connect with local recycling companies to convert shredded documents into tissue rolls. But even that small shift sparked something.

Staff who once thought nothing of tossing paper now saw their own contributions turned into something useful.

“We displayed stacks of tissue rolls in the canteen with signs saying, ‘This came from your own waste.’ That moment changed everything,” recalls Ibrahim Coker from the Sustainability team.

From there, the initiative grew, first within the Archives unit, then across departments, and eventually across the bank. By 2022, with the formation of the Sustainability Department, Waste to Cash became a formal, bank-wide initiative. In 2023, it rolled out in full.

Not just a bin. It’s a culture shift

This wasn’t just about putting a few colour-coded bins in place (though that was part of it). It was about relearning habits and redefining value.

At first, staff were hesitant. “It was a culture shock,” says Ibrahim Coker, Sustainable Operations Advisor, Fidelity Bank Ghana Limited. “We were used to tossing everything in one bin. Suddenly, we had to think, paper in one, plastic in another, organic waste separately.” But through awareness sessions, ongoing training, and small wins, the change took root. Even janitorial staff were trained to help with segregation, and departments began taking ownership of the process.

Today, you will find those bins at strategic points across the bank, in kitchenettes, canteens, and office spaces. And behind those bins is a growing understanding that waste is not just something to be discarded. It’s a resource.

More than paper: A circular economy in action

The initiative has since expanded beyond paper. Fidelity now recycles plastic waste, e-waste, and even old campaign T-shirts, transforming them into soundproof panels for meeting rooms.

These panels, which now feature in some office spaces, are made using a blend of orange and white materials from Fidelity’s own branded T-shirts.

It’s not just innovation. It’s identity.

What’s more, staff have begun bringing recyclable waste from their homes, recognizing the value of what they used to throw away.

And some Fidelity customers, engaged during site visits, are also joining the movement, incorporating recycling practices into their own businesses.

The results: Tangible and transformative

The impact is twofold. Internally, the initiative is saving the bank money, reducing procurement costs for things like tissue rolls, and lessening reliance on waste disposal vendors. Externally, it’s positioning Fidelity as a leader in sustainable finance and operations.

Recognition has followed. In 2024, Fidelity won several awards for environmental stewardship, including the Resource Efficiency Award from the Health, Environment, Safety and Security (HESS) group and the Sustainable Bank of the Year Award from EuroMoney. But for the team driving this change, the real reward is in the shift they see every day, in people’s minds and behaviours.

“There’s no greenwashing here,” says Ibrahim Coker. “When auditors or visitors come in, they see the bins, the recycled products, the reports. The work is visible and it’s working.”

What’s next: From Fidelity to the future

The Sustainability team isn’t stopping here. The next frontier is education. Under the Orange Impact initiative, Fidelity Bank is working with partner schools to introduce waste segregation practices early – teaching students to see waste not as rubbish, but as raw material.

Last year, students took part in an upcycling competition, turning sachet rubbers, paper, and plastic waste into products like raincoats, shopping bags, and even scale models of excavators. They were judged, awarded, and inspired to keep going.

Because if we can embed sustainability into our future leaders, we’ll be solving tomorrow’s problems today.

Starting small, thinking big

Fidelity’s Waste to Cash journey proves something simple: you don’t need to wait for perfect conditions to do the right thing. You can start small: one department, one office, even one bin at a time. Over time, it becomes a culture. A way of thinking. A habit that spreads.

This isn’t just a story about turning waste into tissue rolls or soundproof boards. It’s about changing the way we think about the things we throw away. It’s about seeing potential where others see problems.

It’s about turning waste into cash.

Gov’t denies cancelling $1.2bn Bauxite Lease to Rocksure International

0

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has strongly refuted reports suggesting that the Government of Ghana has cancelled a $1.2 billion bauxite lease awarded to Rocksure International in favour of foreign partners.

The Ministry described the claims as false, baseless, and misleading, insisting no valid lease ever existed for Rocksure International to be cancelled.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, July 30, the Ministry clarified that although Rocksure International was linked to a proposed lease, the agreement was never ratified by the 8th Parliament of Ghana before its dissolution in January 2025.

Citing a 2019 Supreme Court ruling, the Ministry explained that any unratified mining lease is considered legally void, and therefore, the alleged cancellation is legally impossible.

The Ministry also discredited the widely circulated valuation of the bauxite deposit at $1.2 billion, labelling it as “unsubstantiated and grossly misleading.”

According to the statement, no official valuation of the project or deposit has pegged it at that amount, and the claim appears to be a deliberate distortion aimed at stirring public controversy.

Further setting the record straight, the Ministry outlined the role of the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) in Ghana’s aluminium sector.

GIADEC, established by law, is responsible for developing the country’s bauxite resources by engaging strategic investors and overseeing key projects such as the Western Railway Network, Takoradi Port Expansion, and the establishment of an alumina refinery and aluminium smelter.

The Corporation is also tasked with retrofitting VALCO to improve efficiency and commercial viability.

The Ministry emphasised that any partnerships being pursued are in line with GIADEC’s legal mandate and broader vision to develop an Integrated Aluminium Industry in Ghana.

Ghana cuts rates by most on record, signals more to come

0

Ghana’s central bank lowered its key interest rate by the most on record after the pace of inflation significantly slowed in the West African nation and signalled it would continue to ease if the disinflation trend continues.

The monetary policy committee voted by a majority decision to cut rates to 25% from 28%, Governor Johnson Asiama told reporters on Wednesday in the capital, Accra. That matched the median estimate of nine economists in a Bloomberg survey. This is the second MPC meeting this month. An emergency gathering called almost two weeks ago opted to delay publicising any policy decision until this one was held.

“Looking ahead, the committee will continue to assess incoming data and likely reduce the policy rate further should the disinflation trend continue,” Asiama said. “The July forecast also shows that headline inflation is expected to decline further in the third quarter of 2025 and trend within the medium-term target of 8% (+/-2 ppts) by the end of 2025, earlier than initial projections.”

Since the MPC last met, inflation has softened to 13.7% from 18.4% in May, largely due to a rally in the cedi against the dollar, and there has been a drastic drop in treasury bill rates.

Reforms under an International Monetary Fund program, tight fiscal control, credit rating upgrades, progress on debt restructuring and a spike in the gold price have boosted foreign-exchange reserves and benefited Africa’s largest bullion producer, underpinning the cedi’s 40% appreciation against the dollar this year.

To maintain the stability of the currency, the nation has been cracking down on awarding government contracts and pricing or paying for goods and services in foreign currency.

Ruto, Museveni deplore trade barriers in East Africa

President Yoweri Museveni (L) and his William Ruto met at State House Nairobi on July 30, 2025 President Yoweri Museveni (L) and his William Ruto met at State House Nairobi on July 30, 2025

Trade restrictions among East African Community partner states are hurting economic progress in the region, Kenyan President William Ruto and Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni have warned.

At a joint press statement on Wednesday at the State House Nairobi, the two leaders expressed concern over reluctance by partners to open up markets.

The two leaders met in Nairobi to discuss various issues, including trade, security, and overall regional peace. The meeting came amid a rise of non-tariff barriers in a region where intra-trade is low.

The Ugandan leader said the region must “wake up” and make “rational” decisions about trade and economy.

The leaders discussed “persistent non-tariff barriers that hinder the flow of goods and frustrate the objectives of regional integration under the EAC framework.”

They did not name the culprits, but the meeting came as Tanzania roiled the regional Common Market by banning foreigners from engaging in “small businesses.”

In a Special Supplement on July 28, Dodoma argued it was shielding locals from unfair competition from foreigners. The private sector condemned the move.

Museveni said the wider eastern Africa region has operated like a house with rooms scattered in different countries.

“You have got countries like Uganda, which has no access to the ocean. South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, CAR, Chad…even Ethiopia — that big country — no access to the sea. And people are not working to solve that. They are content. And you are president, minister…what are you ministering about?” he said.

“If you are not solving the issue of access to the market, how will you solve that? Whoever is president, you will solve that. When you produce goods and services, the next question is who buys? If you don’t answer that and you are a leader…the future is very bleak. I am glad the region is waking up. How can you have a sitting room in another country, a bedroom in another country, a kitchen in another country…how can we have an arrangement like this?”

But Kenya and Uganda have also bickered over trade disputes especially on milk and poultry.

“The East African Community continues to demonstrate its ability as a good model for regional integration. We emphasise the centrality of unity, economic convergence, and shared prosperity as guiding principles for deeper integration,” Dr Ruto said.

According to the EAC Secretariat, intra-EAC trade has been rising steadily, albeit struggling with NTBs.

In 2024, the EAC’s total trade with the rest of the world grew by 14.17 percent to $124.9 billion, from $109.4 billion. Intra-trade increased by 9.35 percent, reaching $15.2 billion, or 12.17 percent of the total trade volume.

Yet experts at the East African Business Council say this could be as high as 60 percent were member states intent on implementing decisions they make around the common external tariff and non-tariff barriers.

The EAC Council of Ministers says that addressing common external tariff (CET) challenges and eliminating NTBs would unlock $63.4 billion in regional trade.

For example, four of the eight East African Community member states have focused on national interests in their budgets.

According to President Ruto is the chair of the EAC Heads of State Summit.

He said that a Joint Monitoring Committee (JMC) will hold its mid-term review in October, which will be crucial for the matters that affect trade across the borders. JMC is the formal joint technical committee meant to respond to issues affecting the two sides.

Ruto and Museveni signed an agreement on eight areas: trade, energy, mining, tourism, agriculture and animal industry, fisheries and aquaculture, investment promotion, and transport.

Both reiterated the need for regional peace and stability.

“We reaffirmed our position that security is essential to sustainable development and commended ongoing regional peace-building initiatives. We further agreed to collaborate closely in conflict resolution efforts, advocating inclusive approaches, supported by both regional and international frameworks,” their joint communique said.

Three young Ghanaian photographers were celebrated on July 30, 2025 at the National Heritage Photo Competition Awards held at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

The competition, organized by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, aims to inspire youth under 25 to preserve Ghana’s cultural identity through visual storytelling.

Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, commended the winners for capturing powerful images that reflect Ghana’s heritage. In her keynote, she said, “You have not only told your own stories, but you have helped tell Ghana’s story.” The winning photos will be added to the national cultural archive.

The ceremony began with a moment of silence for the late Highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, known as Daddy Lumba. The Minister described him as “a true legend whose music became the soundtrack of our lives.”

Submissions showcased festivals, crafts, historic sites, and rural life, judged on creativity, technical skill, and cultural relevance.

Gomashie praised all participants and quoted cultural advocate Arnold Quanoo, saying, “Heritage is not what we inherit by accident, but what we choose to preserve with intention.”

She reaffirmed the government’s commitment, under the leadership of H.E. President John Dramani Mahama, to supporting youth through arts and culture.

The event was attended by dignitaries including the High Commissioner of Barbados, the Mexican Ambassador to Ghana, the UNESCO Country Director, and Osmanu Damba, Acting Secretary-General of Ghana’s National Commission for UNESCO.

Speaking on behalf of UNESCO, Dr Damba applauded the Ministry’s efforts to make heritage more accessible to the public and relevant to the digital generation.

He said initiatives like the photo competition help bring Ghana’s history to the world and called it “more than just a contest.”

Awards were presented to overall winner Caleb Vanderpuye, first runner-up Kwabena Osei Asamoah, and second runner-up Zeinab Abas Mohammed. The ceremony ended with a call for young people to keep telling Ghana’s story—one image at a time.

Asante Kotoko’s Toyota Cup celebrations reached a royal climax on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, as the club officially presented the trophy to their Life Patron, His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

Fresh from their dramatic 3-2 penalty shootout victory over South African giants Kaizer Chiefs in Durban, the Porcupine Warriors gathered at the palace to honour the Asantehene, a longstanding symbol of the club’s identity and inspiration.

The Kotoko delegation was led by Interim Management Committee chairman Nana Apinkrah, with players, technical staff, and other top officials joining the proud presentation ceremony.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II received the trophy with smiles, applauding the team for bringing glory to Asanteman and Ghana as a whole.

Saturday’s final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium saw goalkeeper Mohammed Camara rise to the occasion with three crucial penalty saves, after a tense goalless draw in regulation time.

The victory marked a significant milestone for the club as they prepare for the upcoming Ghana Premier League season and the CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

The presentation at Manhyia was not only ceremonial but also deeply symbolic, a moment to reaffirm the club’s bond with its royal heritage.

Having fulfilled their royal duty, the team is now expected to continue their pre-season training in Cape Coast, aiming to build on their momentum and hit the ground running when the new season kicks off.

BOST unveils major solar plan to boost renewable energy transition

0

The Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST) is embarking on a transformative energy initiative, which seeks to roll out solar power systems across its key fuel depots as part of a broader green transition strategy.

The move, which aligns with Ghana’s Energy Transition Framework, is expected to significantly cut operational costs, reduce emissions, and boost the country’s clean energy ambitions.

The national framework targets a 10% reduction in emissions by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070.

As part of the initiative, BOST has established a Green Transition and Alternative Fuels Department tasked with leading the company’s shift toward more sustainable operations.

Solar panel installations are already underway at the Buipe and Kumasi depots, with Tema scheduled next. These installations will provide power for critical functions such as pumps, lighting, and monitoring systems, replacing the reliance on costly diesel generators.

“Energy is one of BOST’s biggest expenses, and with diesel prices still above GH¢12 per litre, the shift to solar is smart economics,” Managing Director of BOST Afetsi Awoonor said in a statement on July 30.

He mentioned that the transition is not only expected to yield cost savings but also open potential revenue opportunities through Ghana’s emerging carbon credit market.

“Each solar-powered depot contributes to the national emission-reduction target, reinforcing BOST’s role in the country’s sustainable energy future. This marks a deliberate commitment to lowering emissions, reducing energy costs, and aligning BOST’s operations with Ghana’s long-term energy agenda,” Awoonor added.

The company’s efforts come at a time when Ghana has intensified its national climate action with the establishment of the Ministry of Green Transition by President John Dramani Mahama.

The newly created ministry, led by John Abdulai Jinapor, is further strengthened by the Climate Change and Sustainability Secretariat, which is championing a coordinated push across sectors to green the economy, build climate resilience, and attract green finance.

Initiatives like BOST’s solar rollout demonstrate the government’s alignment with this agenda and signal a growing commitment across state institutions to move from fossil-heavy systems to cleaner, smarter energy models.

While acknowledging the challenges of solar integration, including the need for technical skills and system maintenance, BOST sees the shift as essential for building long-term resilience and relevance.

“This transition is not about abandoning oil overnight. It’s about staying relevant in a world that is moving forward, toward cleaner, smarter energy,” Afetsi Awoonor concluded.

GACL repossesses 16-acre Airport land from McDan Group

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) says it has regained control of over 16 acres of prime airport land following a ruling by an Accra High Court in its favour against subsidiaries of the McDan Group.

The court’s judgment, delivered on May 6, 2025, granted GACL full re-entry and possession of two parcels of land, measuring approximately 10.63 acres and 5.66 acres, located near Kotoka International Airport, adjacent to and opposite Action Chapel International.

Ghana Airport Company reclaims airport lands from McDan Group

The lands were leased to McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited, both subsidiaries of the McDan Group, since 2012.

In February this year, GACL filed a writ and statement of claim citing repeated breaches of lease agreements and outstanding ground rent. The company sought the recovery of $26,296 in accrued rent and a perpetual injunction to restrain the companies from further interference with the land.

The High Court granted GACL’s application for summary judgment, holding that the defendants had no valid defence. The court awarded all reliefs sought by GACL and further ordered the payment of GH¢50,000 in legal costs.

In a statement, GACL described the outcome as a major recovery of state assets and commended the role played by its Legal Department and Managing Director, Mrs Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, in pursuing the case.

“The repossession of these lands not only safeguards millions of dollars’ worth of state assets but also reinforces our commitment to accountability and lawful management of public property,” the statement said.

The land recovery follows a related issue in December 2024 when McDan Aviation’s operations at Terminal 1 of Kotoka International Airport were suspended over debt obligations. Though those debts were later settled, the land dispute remained unresolved until the court’s intervention.

A source at the McDan Group has told Graphic Online that the company has appealed the court’s decision.

Six South Sudan soldiers killed in border clashes with Uganda

At least six people have been killed in clashes between longstanding allies South Sudan and Uganda near their shared border, where competing claims over the poorly defined boundary often flare into small-scale fighting.

Elements from the two armies exchanged fire on Monday in South Sudan’s Kajo Keji county, killing five South Sudanese (SSPDF) soldiers, South Sudanese officials said.

Ugandan army spokesperson Felix Kulayigye said SSPDF soldiers had strayed into Uganda’s West Nile region and refused to leave, leading to the firefight, in which at least one Ugandan soldier died.

Uganda has backed forces loyal to South Sudanese President Salva Kiir for several decades, helping the country fight for independence, which was won in 2011, and during the subsequent civil war.

Kajo-Keji County said in a statement that five SSPDF soldiers had been killed in a surprise attack by Ugandan forces backed by tanks and artillery. South Sudan’s army confirmed the skirmish but did not say how many died.

An existing joint border committee will look at ways to find a peaceful resolution to recurrent border-related disputes, SSPDF spokesperson Lul Ruai Koang said in a statement released late on Tuesday.

In March, South Sudan invited Uganda’s army to help bolster security in the capital Juba, following a breakdown in the turbulent relationship between Kiir and his rival, First Vice President Riek Machar.

South Sudan People’s Defence Force (SSPDF) soldiers (left) and Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) soldiers exchanged fire on Monday in South Sudan’s Kajo Keji County, resulting in the deaths of five SSPDF personnel.

Ghana, Nigeria foreign ministers to address press conference in Accra amid ‘Nigeria Must Go’ tensions

0

The foreign ministers of Ghana and Nigeria are expected to jointly address a press conference in Accra shortly, following rising diplomatic tensions sparked by a controversial protest dubbed “Nigeria Must Go,” which has gained momentum in parts of Ghana.

The protest, reportedly fuelled by concerns over migration, trade competition, and growing economic pressure within Ghana, has triggered a wave of online and street-level agitation, with some groups calling for stricter regulations on Nigerian nationals living in the country.

The joint press briefing is anticipated to outline a coordinated response, reaffirm bilateral ties, and address public concerns around immigration, business ownership, and regional integration.

A diplomatic source in Accra hinted that the briefing will likely focus on reaffirming ECOWAS protocols on free movement and the rights of citizens within the West African bloc.

It may also include an appeal for restraint, dialogue, and respect for shared regional values between the two influential West African nations.

This development comes amid increased media attention and growing concern among Nigerian communities in Ghana, many of whom have expressed fears over potential harassment or displacement.

Similarly, Ghanaian officials have faced internal pressure to clarify their stance, as misinformation and inflammatory rhetoric circulate online.

Azigiza Jnr has shared powerful transformation from wayward life to serving God Azigiza Jnr has shared powerful transformation from wayward life to serving God

Legendary Ghanaian DJ and former radio sensation, Azigiza Jnr, has shared a powerful and emotional account of his transformation from a life of partying and smoking to answering the call of God.

In a deep conversation, he revealed how a series of spiritual encounters forced him to abandon his old lifestyle and embrace the path of ministry.

According to him, what started off as a fun-filled, hyperactive youth soon became an uneasy experience as his connection with the nightclub scene began to feel burdensome.

“I used to smoke cigarettes, I was naturally hyper so I never really liked alcohol. But it got to a point where cigarette became bitter, and whenever I climbed the stairs to Glenn’s nightclub, it felt like the weight of the world had been placed on me,” he stated.

Azigiza’s turning point came when he began having repeated spiritual experiences, even in his sleep.

“If I decided not to go to Glenn’s, the heaviness would lift. But when I slept, I’d hear nothing but scriptures being read. Bro, the prayers of a mother it works,” he said with conviction.

He described the entire experience as being “arrested by God,” a phrase he used to explain the divine pull that shifted his focus from fame and partying to faith and purpose.

Once one of the hottest names on the turntables in Ghana’s entertainment scene, Azigiza’s transformation shocked many fans at the time, but has since inspired countless others.

Today, he is known not just for his influence in the early days of hiplife and entertainment, but for his work in ministry and personal transformation.

Ghana and Japan have signed a landmark bilateral agreement to bolster educational cooperation, promote sustainable development, and equip students with essential green and digital skills for the future.

The agreement was formalized in Tokyo by Ghana’s Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, and representatives from Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

The agreement aims to foster inclusive, high-quality education and ensure that education in both countries aligns with global goals for sustainability and technological advancement.

Speaking at the brief ceremony, Haruna Iddrisu described the agreement as “strategic and transformative,” emphasizing its alignment with Ghana’s Education Strategic Plan (ESP 2018–2030) and its goal of building a knowledge-driven economy.

He expressed gratitude to the Japanese government and MEXT for their continued technical support and shared dedication to educational excellence, calling the partnership a “vital contribution to global progress.”

Haruna Iddrisu highlighted Ghana’s commitment to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), which aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 4—ensuring inclusive, equitable, and quality education.

He praised Japan’s global leadership in ESD, referencing the UNESCO ESD Centre in Okayama and Japan’s history of hosting major global forums on the topic.

The agreement builds on decades of Japanese support for Ghana’s education sector through initiatives like the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Sakura Science Exchange Program, and various teacher training projects.

Officials from both nations expressed confidence that this enhanced collaboration will empower youth, drive innovation, and create resilient education systems capable of addressing the demands of a rapidly evolving world.

President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to transform selected schools across the country into specialised sports development institutions.

John Dramani Mahama made this declaration when he met the Ghana Football Association and the Black Queens on July 30, 2025.

He stressed the need to develop young talents by integrating structured sports programs into schools.

“We are also going to equip some of the schools around the country to enable them train young persons in sports. We will give them all the infrastructure they need.

“We will assemble the best talents from the schools so that they can train and study at the same time and build their talents to join the senior team,” he said.

The initiative is expected to create a clear pathway for young athletes to balance academic pursuits with elite sports training.

The Black Queens secured a bronze medal at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, marking Ghana’s first podium finish since 2016.

Buipe Inland Port to be fully operationalized — Mahama

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, July 30, GNA – The Buipe Inland Port in the Savannah Region will soon be fully operationalized and integrated into the national transportation strategy, President John Dramani Mahama, has announced.

This, the President said would go a long way to enhance logistics and position the Savannah Region as a gateway to the Sahel, boosting regional trade and reducing transport costs.

The President made a disclosure during a courtesy call on him by the Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, the Overlord of Gonjaland at the Presidency in Accra.

The Yagbonwura’s historic visit to the Presidency was to congratulate President Mahama on his re-election in the December 7, 2024, general elections.

President Mahama together with Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang received the Yagbonwura and his entourage of Paramount Chiefs at the forecourt of the Presidency.

The President said the Savannah region, together with the other newly created regions, would benefit from sports stadia for the development of youthful sporting talents.

“Indeed, we’ve asked them to start looking for the land for the Savannah Regional Sports Stadium. It will have all the facilities,” the President said.

“A region youth employment plan, region-specific youth employment plan, is going to be launched aligned with the national 24-Hour Economy.”

President Mahama said skills training centres would be established in Savannah and youth cooperatives would be supported to engage in agribusiness.

He said the Government would extend rural electrification and solar energy solutions to deprive communities such as Kodjokura, Kpalbe, and Wasipe, all in the Savannah region.

“No child should study in darkness and no clinic should operate without power,” he said.

“These are not just promises, they are policy commitments grounded in the express needs of our people and supported by practical development framework.”

The President reiterated that none of these aspirations could be achieved without the active partnership of traditional authorities.

“I’ve always maintained that Ghana’s progress is most suitable when it includes our chiefs and our people, our elders, and community leaders.

“We will not leave you out as spectators, but as co-architects,” he said.

Agradaa begins plea bargain talks in nude image case

0

Patricia Asiedu Asiamah, also known as Nana Agradaa and another facing trial for the alleged unlawful publication of intimate images, have initiated plea bargain negotiations with the Office of the Attorney General.

Details of the ongoing negotiations remain undisclosed, but the presiding judge, Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh of the High Court in Accra, expressed hope that the talks will conclude before the next hearing date, which has been adjourned to October 21, 2025.

One of the accused, Enoch Owusu Kissi, has opted out of the negotiations. His legal team has instead filed a notice of appeal challenging the court’s ruling ordering him to open his defence.

The developments mark a new turn in the high-profile case involving Patricia Asiedua Asiamah — widely known as Nana Agradaa — who is already serving a 15-year prison sentence for a separate conviction involving charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretence.

Earlier this month, the court rejected a submission of no case filed by Agradaa’s lawyers, ruling that the accused persons have a case to answer in the current matter. As such, the court ordered the opening of their defence.

However, at the last sitting on July 7, Agradaa was absent from court, prompting the judge to direct prison authorities to ensure her presence in subsequent proceedings. She is currently in lawful custody at Nsawam Prison.

The instant case stems from a broadcast on Agradaa’s former TV station, Thunder TV where prosecutors say she displayed nude images of Prophet Emmanuel Appiah Fomum during a live programme and later shared them via WhatsApp.

Her co-accused, Charles Omane alias One Gig, and Enoch Owusu Kissi, are alleged to have participated in the broadcast and made disparaging commentary about the images. Charges levelled against them include abetment and conspiracy under the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038).

The case, initially dismissed at the Circuit Court level, was refiled by state prosecutors at the High Court, where it continues to unfold.

The Court of Appeal has granted William Ato Essien, founder of the defunct Capital Bank, a GH₵10 million bail with two sureties pending his appeal.

This follows a campaign by some Ghanaians, including an online petition to the President for clemency on health grounds for Ato Essien.

He was convicted in October 2023 after a restitution agreement collapsed due to non-payment of funds pledged towards the alleged misappropriation of GH₵90 million in Bank of Ghana liquidity support to Capital Bank.

Following his default on repayment obligations, the court sentenced him to 15 years.

Age limit change, influencer ban

In a move that will also affect online personalities, social media influencers, and celebrities have been prohibited from endorsing, promoting, or advertising alcohol, drugs, or substances. The new policy also prohibits entertainment, sports, and media personalities from the same.

The government has also set 21 years as the minimum legal age for consuming alcohol, effectively ending the 18-year legal limit. Additionally, no person under the age of 21 will be allowed to access or enter any alcohol-selling outlets — whether accompanied or unaccompanied by an appropriate adult.

Further, alcohol-related businesses have been prohibited from naming and branding sports teams after an alcoholic drink. In a move that will likely hit the sports sector, the new policy also bans companies from sponsoring, branding a sports league, tournament or a national team.

The new rules are contained in the national policy for the prevention, management, and control of alcohol, drugs, and substance abuse, which is dated July 2025.

“This policy is the culmination of an extensive, inclusive, and collaborative effort involving diverse stakeholders across Kenya—from national and county governments to civil society, faith-based groups, the private sector, and the general public. Together, we have forged a unified approach to prevent, mitigate, and control the devastating impact of alcohol, drugs, and substance abuse in our nation,” CS Murkomen says in the foreword of the document.

Nacada is the agency that will be mandated to implement the policy.

“To maximise impact, Nacada will mobilise and align stakeholders in designing, executing, and monitoring interventions aimed at reducing substance abuse and its devastating effects,” Interior PS Raymond Omollo says in the document’s preface.
