Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has publicly expressed his admiration for Ghana international Mohammed Kudus, fueling speculation over a potential summer move.
Kudus, currently at West Ham United, is reportedly attracting interest from several Premier League clubs, including Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.
Following Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Brazilian side Palmeiras in the FIFA Club World Cup, Maresca stopped short of confirming a formal pursuit but acknowledged his long-standing awareness of the 24-year-old’s talent.
“He’s a West Ham player, so I can’t say much. The only thing I can say is that I’ve known Kudus since his time at Ajax,” Maresca said.
West Ham signed Kudus from Ajax in 2023 for £38 million and are believed to be demanding at least £60 million to part ways with the versatile attacker.

Asante Kotoko are yet to announce new captains for the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season. coach Karim Zito finds himself needing to put every player at their rightful place at the club.

John Kufuor’s administration jailed Tsatsu Tsikata (R) under controversial circumstances in 2008
Following the turf on which legal luminary, Tsatsu Tsikata, and former Ghana president, John Agyekum Kufuor’s relationship emerged during the reign of the latter’s presidency, there has always been this widespread notion that the two men are at loggerheads.
And for seemingly obvious reasons: Kufuor’s administration jailed Tsikata under very contentious circumstances (a case of infringement of fundamental human rights), the matter has remained, and it came up during one of the most recent interviews of the celebrated lawyer.
During that encounter on GHOne TV, Tsatsu Tsikata was asked the question, ‘Have you forgiven President Kufuor?’ to which he said that despite his reservations about Kufuor’s role in jailing him, he has no resentment against him.
He also added that there have been instances where he even extended courtesies to the former president in public whenever they have met.
“There is nothing to forgive. I say to people, I have never had any bitterness or grievance against President Kufuor. He did atrocious things against me for whatever reason. He was determined to have me go to prison, and I did go to prison.
“It was orchestrated by him on June 18, 2008. I was in prison for five months, but by God’s grace, I didn’t die in prison. I was evacuated to the hospital, and by God’s grace, I’m still alive,” he added.
On the subject of why he rejected a presidential pardon from Kufuor, he explained that John Agyekum Kufuor acted in bad faith.
“On his last day in office, he offered me a pardon, but I rejected it because it was in bad faith. It was clearly in bad faith. He had orchestrated everything. The day I was being sentenced, the court had not even announced it was going to give a decision because the trial hadn’t ended. It had been set up for me to go to jail, and I went,” he added.
But for Tsatsu Tsikata, the time he spent in prison was a moment of new lessons for him.
He added that the five months at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison exposed him to the horrible incidents and injustices of Ghana’s criminal system.
According to him, while there, he crossed paths with people who had been on remand for more than a decade with their cases not heard.
“I actually thank God for that experience. I tell people that going to Nsawam Prison took me to another faculty of law. I engaged with many who were in prison, and I realised that there were people suffering injustices who did not have the kind of recourse that I had.
“I had the opportunity of a lawyer who gave it all to protect my rights. A lot of those people didn’t have that. I saw people who were in prison for 12 years, and nobody has gone to court on their behalf,” he said.
Tsatsu acquitted and discharged by Court of Appeal
After eight years of legal battle, Tsatsu Tsikata was cleared of the charges, and his conviction was reversed unanimously by the Court of Appeal, which acquitted and discharged him.
Justice Dennis Adjei said there was a miscarriage of justice when an Accra Fast Track High Court on June 18, 2008, found him guilty on three counts of willfully causing financial loss of GH¢230,000 to the state and another count of misapplying public property.
In a 2021 interview with KSM, he said of the saga: “I think I said it nicely. I wrote him a letter on my hospital bed, and I said I will not accept his pardon, and I wouldn’t accept it.
“By then, I already had an appeal pending against the decision that had been taken. I wanted to be vindicated, not pardoned. When you are pardoned, it means that your conviction still stands, but the penalty has been wiped away.”
Expressing delight at the overturned verdict, Tsikata quoted Psalm 94:15: “Justice will again be found in the courts, and all righteous people will support it,” and emphasised that, indeed “justice has been found in the courts.”

A typical tro-tro station in Ghana
In Ghana, tro-tros are the lifeline of daily transport, privately-owned minibuses that carry millions of commuters every day along fixed routes, sometimes moving only when packed to capacity.
‘Tro tro’ is integral to Ghana’s transportation ecosystem, with most commuters relying on them for work and shopping purposes.
While large buses also provide public transport in Accra, ‘tro tro’ remains the preferred choice across different regions.
However, while these colourful mini buses have become a symbol of Ghanaian city life, few people know how the name ‘tro-tro’ name actually came about.
As such, while speaking on Peace FM, Professor Kofi Agyekum, popularly known as Opanyin Agyekum, explained the surprising origin of the term.
According to him, the name goes all the way back to Ghana’s colonial days when the British currency system shaped how people paid for transport.
“When we used to spend pounds, 20 shillings meant 1 pound. We had ‘kapre,’ which is equivalent to today’s pesewa. We had farthing, which was a quarter of the pesewa, so the simpoa (pence) became what the Accra people called tro.
“So, when we were kids, our mothers used to call the cars we call ‘trotro,’ now ‘simpoa simpoa.’ Because the money they accepted was the ‘tro,’ which is three pence,” he explained.
Back then, passengers paid three pence, the “tro,” for each trip.
The name stuck, and decades later, the word ‘tro-tro’ still rolls off the tongues of commuters every day as they squeeze into these minibuses to get to work, school, or the market.
Today, each ‘tro-tro’ is typically run by a driver and a conductor known as the ‘mate,’ who collects fares and calls out stops.
They remain an essential part of Ghana’s transport network.

Thomas Partey was a midfielder of Arsenal
Arsenal have issued a statement following the confirmation that former midfielder Thomas Partey has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.
The charges come just days after the Ghanaian international’s contract with the club expired on June 30.
In a brief statement to the BBC, the club said: “The player’s contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings the club is unable to comment on the case.”
The English Football Association and the Premier League declined to comment.
The 32-year-old is accused of sexually assaulting three women between 2021 and 2022. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed that the charges were brought following a comprehensive three-year investigation by the Metropolitan Police and a thorough review of evidence.
According to the CPS, two of the rape charges relate to one woman, three more to a second, and the sexual assault charge involves a third woman. The alleged victims have not been identified for legal reasons.
Partey was initially arrested in July 2022, though he was not named publicly at the time and continued to play for Arsenal while on bail. During the course of the investigation, he made over 50 appearances for the club.
The midfielder, who joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in 2020 for £45 million, has denied all charges.
In a statement released through his lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire of Hickman & Rose, Partey said he “welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name” and has “fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their investigation.”
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is overseeing the case, said: “Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward. We would ask anyone who has been impacted by this case, or anyone who has information, to speak with our team.”
Partey is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 5.
The midfielder departed Arsenal at the end of June following the expiration of his contract, with reports suggesting that negotiations over an extension had stalled earlier in the summer.
He has since been training in Ghana and recently received the Ghana Footballer of the Year award.
During his five-year spell at the Emirates, Partey made 167 appearances, scored nine goals, and was part of the squad that won the FA Community Shield in 2023. Despite injuries, he featured prominently last season as Arsenal finished second in the Premier League and reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
In a recent interview, Partey reflected on his future, saying his family would play a crucial role in his next move: “I think the first thing is where are you happy and where do you feel at home, there are a lot of things where you have to look now with a family, where you want them to be happy.”

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP) has called on Multichoice Ghana to implement a 30% reduction in DSTV subscription prices, citing the significant appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi and growing public dissatisfaction with current rates.
During a meeting held today with a team from DSTV, led by Dr. Keabetswe Modimoeng, Group Executive for Regulatory and Corporate Affairs, the Minister indicated that government’s mandate is to respond to the needs of Ghanaians, who have expressed frustration over high DSTV prices and outdated content offerings.
Last Tuesday, clergymen from the various churches prayed for peace and security to prevail in the country, while choirs sang songs of praise during interludes and guests engaged in dance sessions with the music from the choirs, Alberto Mario Noretti reports from the Ho Jubilee Park.
The prayer session and dancing were held on July 1, a day reinstated as Ghana’s Republic Day holiday and also to be observed as a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving every year.
Addressing participants in the maiden National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving event which was on the theme: “Reflect, Reset and Review for National Prosperity”, the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, urged the people to avoid all divisive tendencies and embrace one another as children in one family.
“Our peace must never be taken for granted, and so, we must respect one another as Ghanaians,” he stated.
Mr Gunu gave an assurance that the Volta Regional Coordinating Council would not compromise its stance to promote equity and create equal opportunities for all.
The Director of Programme, Ecumenical and Social Relations of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (EPCG), Rev. Emmanuel Attu, said the country would be a happier place to live in if the citizens boldly embraced the truth and readily exposed evil in the society.
He said the theme was most relevant in its timing as the country’s resetting agenda would require sacrifice and integrity, in the total absence of corruption, to put the country on the path of progress.
From Wa in the Upper West Region, Kwadwo Baffoe Donkor writes that the Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, and the Upper West Regional Minister, Charles Lwanga Puozuing, joined the Muslim community at the Wa Central Mosque to mark the inaugural National Prayer and Thanksgiving Day.

“To reset is now a retreat; it is a reawakening. We need to let go of our past grievances, re-evaluate priorities or recommit to some positive practices,” he appealed.
Mr Puozuing said the date marked a new spiritual chapter in Ghana’s national life, “a solemn moment to reflect, reset and renew our national prosperity. It is not just a day on the calendar, it is a call to the conscience of a nation blessed beyond measure, yearning for healing, unity, peace and moral transformation”.

He called on all to soberly reflect on how far Ghana had come, especially “the triumphs we celebrate, the trials we endure and the troubling moral drift we must urgently arrest.”
He said the day should be used to reflect on the widening inequality gap, the growing sense of political mistrust, the rise in youth unemployment, drug abuse and moral decadence.
“We also need to reflect on our resilience, the way we pull together in crisis, our rich cultural and religious diversity and our collective yearning for a more just, honest and prosperous Ghana,” he said.
He called on all and sundry to renew themselves to the Ghana project and to commit themselves as public servants, Muslims or Christians, to build a country where peace was not seasonal and justice was not selective.
“Where public office is a sacred trust, not an avenue for personal gain, and where our political colours give way to the red, gold, green and the shining black star that unites us all,” he added.
Mr Puozuing also reminded the residents of the region of the resurgence of COVID-19 cases in some parts of the country and the need to keep their surroundings clean as well as protect themselves from contracting the virus.

Members of the clergy took to lead the participants in prayer for the executive, judiciary and legislature for divine guidance, wisdom and discernment to reset priorities for national development and prosperity, among others.
In a word of exhortation, Metropolitan Archbishop of the Catholic Church, Kumasi, Most Rev. Gabriel Justice Anokye, asked Ghanaians to continue to practice truthfulness, integrity, transparency and hard work, among others.

He said: “We can achieve a prosperous country if we accommodate and learn from opposing views in the nation’s political discourse” and denounce extreme partisanship, tribalism and discrimination in the society.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, called on religious leaders to join efforts and the crusade towards restoring values in the lives of Ghanaians for national development.
He said: “It appears issues of ethics and morality are being eroded among leaders in the society”, urging “as a country, our leaders must be ethically and morally sensitive for the betterment of the nation”.
He extended President Mahama’s appreciation to the people and commended them for the prayers as it had continually helped in transforming the country since it gained independence, saying “all the country needs are peace and unity to reach a common goal.”
In Sunyani the Bono Regional version of the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving was marked at the Sunyani Jubilee Park, Biiya Mukusah Ali reports.
It brought together traditional leaders, churches, schools, security agencies and persons living with disability (PWDs).
The worshipers danced, sang in praise and worship to God and solicited his favour.
The congregation also prayed for the nation and the region, leaders and government officials, for peace and unity, for the marginalised and needy, the youth and families.
Muslims at the Sunyani Zongo held similar prayers at the Sunyani Central Mosque to thank God and seek his guidance and protection.
At the Jubilee Park, the Anglican Bishop of the Sunyani Diocese, Right Reverend Dr Festus Yeboah Asuamah, urged Christians to turn away from their wickedness and encouraged the leadership of the country to be accountable to the citizens.
He also urged the clergy to refrain from false prophecies and abuse of people in the name of God.
Rt Rev. Dr Asuamah said the attitude of some pastors had allowed the public to disrespect pastors and advised Ghanaians to respect the leadership of the country, irrespective of the political parties they belonged to.
The Regional Minister, Joseph Addae Akwaboa, urged Ghanaians to adopt honesty, hard work, tolerance, accountability and peace.
He urged the public to reset their mindset towards nation building, productivity, unity and rekindle patriotism.
Ghana’s gold holdings have soared to a record 32.99 tonnes as of June 2025, according to the latest reserves report released by the Bank of Ghana to the Ghana News Agency on Friday.
This marks a sharp rise from the 8.78 tonnes recorded in May 2023, underscoring a strategic build-up of the country’s monetary reserves amid persistent global economic uncertainties.

The announcement comes ahead of the 125th regular meetings of the Bank of Ghana’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), scheduled for July 21–23, 2025. The MPC will review recent macroeconomic trends and announce its policy decisions during a post-meeting press briefing.
Market watchers anticipate that the impressive reserve figures will influence the Committee’s policy stance, especially in managing inflation and exchange rate stability.
As central banks worldwide increase their gold holdings in response to rising geopolitical and financial risks, Ghana’s strategy signals a pivot toward long-term economic resilience and monetary autonomy.

The Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Yandoh, has publicly said he prefers to earning multiple master’s degrees than pursuing a PhD.
According to him, a PhD comes with no tangible benefits, asserting that individuals who hold such titles often have little to show for it.
To Yandoh, he prefers to pursue a master’s degree instead, as he believes it comes with a certain level of prominence and tangible benefits.
“Those with PhDs often struggle financially. The ‘Dr’ title alone comes with nothing, but the benefits associated with a master’s degree is huge.
“Many individuals who hold the ‘Dr’ title have little to show for it beyond the designation itself,” he said in an Asempa FM interview.
The politician, to the surprise of many, disclosed that he holds three master’s degrees, justifying his preference with clear reasoning.

The two suspects were caught hiding in a car boot to leave campus
Authorities at St. Louis Senior High School in Kumasi have intercepted two female students attempting to leave the school premises illegally by hiding in the trunk of a private vehicle.
The incident occurred during a routine security check of a car that had entered the school under the pretense of picking up a Bolt ride. Acting on suspicion, staff members conducted a random search of the vehicle and were shocked to discover the two students concealed in the trunk.
One of the students was dressed in a blue straight dress, while the other wore shorts and a skimpy top, clothing considered inappropriate by the school’s standards.
A video of the incident, which has since gone viral, captures a staff member insisting that the morning assembly be delayed so the girls could be presented and the entire student body addressed about the matter.

Stakeholders at GRA’s engagement in Accra
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has announced that it is on course to complete work on the proposed Value Added Tax (VAT) reforms by September 2025.
The reforms, which aim to address longstanding distortions in the VAT system, are expected to be incorporated into the government’s 2026 economic policy and national budget.
Speaking after a stakeholder engagement in Accra, Commissioner of Domestic Revenue at the GRA, Edward Apenteng Gyamera, revealed that the authority is currently undertaking a nationwide consultation process to solicit feedback from key players in the trade and business sectors.
“This is part of the process to get every stakeholder’s input on the upcoming VAT reform by the Ministry of Finance.
In all, we have four engagements in Accra and others in Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tamale before releasing the final draft in the next few weeks,” he explained.
“We should also bear in mind that these are just proposals and not final decisions.”
The VAT reform was initiated by the Ministry of Finance in response to concerns about inefficiencies and complications in the current payment system, which has been in place for over a decade.
Mr Gyamera assured stakeholders that their contributions would be seriously considered and explained that, where specific proposals cannot be adopted, clear justifications will be provided.
The overarching goal of the reform is to broaden the tax base and boost VAT’s share of domestic revenue by over 20%, enhancing Ghana’s fiscal stability and economic resilience.
Earlier this year, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) provided technical assistance to the government and the Ministry of Finance to support the reform process.
According to the GRA, the IMF’s recommendations will be thoroughly reviewed before any final decisions are made.

Chief Executive Officer of the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF), Dr Saajida Shiraz, has announced a major shift in the operations of the fund, declaring an end to the era where approved student loans were not disbursed.
Addressing stakeholders during the official launch of the No Fees Stress initiative in Koforidua on Friday, July 4, Dr. Shiraz said the Fund has restored its credibility by consistently delivering on its obligations to students across the country.
“The days where SLTF approved students for loans it could not give is over, and the nonchalance that characterised the shameful failure to meet core mandate obligations are a thing of the past,” she asserted.
Dr Shiraz noted that the SLTF had already disbursed first-semester loans to a total of 38,440 students across 145 public and private tertiary institutions for the 2024/2025 academic year. More significantly, she announced the resumption of second-semester loan payments; marking the first time in four years that such payments have been made.
“Exactly three days ago, we paid second-semester loans to 19,703 students across 135 public and private institutions,” she revealed.
The SLTF boss credited the progress to the strong backing of government, particularly under President John Dramani Mahama’s education financing reset agenda, and support from key institutions such as GETFund.
“My appreciation goes to the GETFund Administrator for prioritising the President’s tertiary education financing reset agenda and committing to making available to SLTF the funds that are necessary for us to meet our commitments to students,” she said.
Dr Shiraz reaffirmed the Fund’s readiness to continue delivering on all components of the No Fees Stress policy, promising enhanced efficiency, prompt disbursements, and expanded support for Ghanaian students.

In an interview on Channel One News on Friday, July 4, the MP described the proposal as a critical step toward ensuring digital inclusion and price stability. While he commended the recent intervention by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George (MP), Davis Ansah Opoku stressed the need for more sustainable measures to shield consumers from future currency fluctuations.
“I think it is very welcoming. When data prices are reduced, it is something that Ghanaian people will be excited about. As the minister said, the DSTV directive is as a result of the appreciation of the Ghana cedi, and this is something that we expected the telcos to have done, and so for him to have prompted them is something that deserves commendation.
“However, we are looking forward to some pragmatic steps, so that even if the dollar depreciates, we will still have reduced prices. I am looking forward to a fixed rate where Ghanaians enjoy unlimited services every month. And so it is a good step and we commend him for that,” he said.
His comments come on the heels of the Minister’s meeting with MultiChoice Ghana on Thursday, July 4, where the company was urged to reduce DStv subscription fees by 30%, in line with the Ghana cedi’s 30% appreciation over the last five months and increasing consumer frustration over unchanged prices.
A private security officer has been murdered by suspected thieves targeting a power transformer at a factory in Akoti, located in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region.
The deceased, 63-year-old Kwame Boateng, who was employed by Debridge, a private security service, had reported for night duty at a factory under construction as part of the government’s One District One Factory (1D1F) initiative. He was later found lying motionless on the factory premises with his hands and legs tied and a black plastic bag over his head, suggesting he may have been suffocated.
At the scene, dismantled parts of a decommissioned power transformer belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) were discovered, prompting suspicion that the assailants were on a mission to steal the transformer and other electrical cables.
Relatives of the deceased are demanding swift justice. A family member, Kwame Koomson, speaking to Citi News on Friday, July 4, said, “We are counting on the police to conduct swift investigations into the issue and also have the perpetrators arrested to bring justice.”
Another family member also expressed the family’s grief, stressing that only the prompt apprehension of the suspects could bring them some measure of comfort.
Meanwhile, opinion leaders in the area have raised concerns about the rising crime rate and are calling on authorities to implement effective crime prevention measures to safeguard residents and property.

The Minerals Development Fund (MDF) has vehemently denied viral reports that 33 excavators, confiscated during an anti-illegal mining operation at Akomfre, went missing while in police custody.
It has described the reports as ‘false’ and inaccurate, stating that the Administrator of the MDF, Dr Hanna Bisiw-Kotei, was misquoted and that the claims do not reflect what actually happened during the operation.
“The Minerals Development Fund (MDF) is issuing this statement to correct fundamentally inaccurate media reports suggesting that 33 excavators went missing from police custody and to provide a factual account of the events in Akomfre. The narrative created by recent publications, which misquoted our Administrator, Dr Hanna Bisiw-Kotei, is false,” portions of the statement read.
Setting the record straight in a statement dated July 3, 2025, the Fund stated that no excavators had gone missing. It explained that upon the team’s arrival at the illegal mining site in Akomfre, 40 excavators were actively being used by illegal miners.
However, when the team returned the following day, after arrangements were made for law enforcement to seize and secure the machinery, only seven excavators remained on site, indicating that 33 had been removed by the illegal miners.
“Upon arrival, the team unearthed a fleet of approximately 40 excavators actively engaged in widespread environmental degradation. Recognising the scale of the illicit operation, the MDF staff took decisive action, immediately halting the activities to arrest the pervasive destruction.
“The MDF Administrator subsequently liaised with law enforcement to arrange for the formal seizure and custody of the machinery the next day. It must be emphasised that MDF officers lacked the manpower capacity to haul the machines at the time of discovering the illegal mining site,” the statement continued.
It indicated that, “However, upon the arrival of law enforcement officers at the remote site the following morning, it was discovered that about 33 of the excavators had been surreptitiously removed overnight.”
The statement stressed that the police never had custody of the 40 excavators, as widely reported, stating emphatically that only seven were seized and remain in custody.
“Therefore, to be unequivocally clear: the police never had custody of 40 excavators. The seven excavators that remained at the site were the only machines officially seized by law enforcement officers. No excavators have gone missing from police care.”
The statement is in response to widely circulated reports that 33 excavators, which were in police custody after an anti-galamsey operation, had disappeared.
This followed an interview on Adom FM by Dr Hanna Bissiw-Kotei, who also serves as the National Women’s Organiser of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), in which she disclosed that only seven excavators remained when her team returned the following morning.
“We handed over 40 excavators to the police, but when we returned the next morning, only seven were left. I spoke with the Police Commander about the incident because I was unhappy with it. Right now, the seven we managed to recover are being held,” she said.

The Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipal Assembly has appealed to residents and commuters along the Ofankor-Nsawam stretch to grant the Ministry of Roads and Highways a one-week ultimatum to secure the necessary funds to improve accessibility on the heavily deteriorated road.
This call comes amid mounting frustration from road users and a planned protest by the Nsawam Traffic Watchers set for July 12. The Assembly acknowledges that the slow pace of construction is due to a lack of funding, as confirmed by the road contractor.
Speaking to Citi News on Friday, July 4, the Municipal Chief Executive for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Selorm Philibert Fummey, assured the public that efforts are being made at the highest level to expedite the project.
“The Minister told me that work is going on. He’s working behind the clock to get the road contractor some needed funds to continue with the work,” he said.
Mr. Fummey added that in the meantime, measures will be taken to make the road more accessible to ease the burden on commuters.
“For the time being, they are going to make everything possible for the road to be easier. I would like to plead with the road users to give the contractor and the Road Minister just one week or a few more days, and we’ll try and make the road more easing for them to use at least,” he said.
The Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Prof. Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor, has dismissed claims that the Commission’s recent enforcement actions on the use of honorary academic titles are politically driven.
This comes in the wake of GTEC’s recent directives cautioning individuals against appending honorary titles such as “Doctor” and “Professor” to their names without formal academic justification. The Commission says the move is part of broader efforts to restore credibility and order within Ghana’s tertiary education space.
Speaking on Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Friday, July 4, Prof. Jinapor stressed that the regulation exercise is aimed at sanitising the academic environment and is not directed at specific individuals or political affiliations.
“Our position is to sanitise and regulate the tertiary educational space. Honorary doctorate, though it points to your contributions to society, it’s not an academic title. It’s even becoming more worrying when it comes to professorship. There are a lot of people who claim to be professors when they are not, and we’re not going to renege on our efforts. It’s not about politics,” he clarified.
He noted that the problem is widespread and not isolated to the political arena.
“If you look at the individuals who have come into the public domain, it cuts across. The names you have heard are just a microcosm of the bigger people who happen to be in this whole situation,” he said.
Prof. Jinapor further indicated that while most individuals comply with regulations once alerted, a few continue to resist oversight.
“It’s just a few recalcitrant ones who are adamant and have been fighting the system,” he said.
GTEC recently issued a formal caution to Awutu Senya East MP, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, instructing her to immediately cease using the academic title “Doctor.” The Commission also directed Mr. Sofo Rashid Tanko, Acting CEO of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), widely known as “Tanko-Computer,” to stop using the same title, citing the lack of academic credentials to support its use.

The Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has criticised the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) for refusing to recognise the union’s representatives on the governing councils of traditional public universities.
The union, on Thursday, July 3, declared an indefinite nationwide strike after the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum it issued on June 24, 2025. The ultimatum demanded that relevant authorities address what TEWU-GH describes as a deliberate exclusion of its members from university governance structures.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Friday, July 4, Charles Arthur, Chairman of TEWU-GH at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), accused the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Prof. Abdulai Jinapor, of breaching established labour regulations.
“We’re being cheated by Prof. Abdulai Jinapor, regulator of public universities in Ghana [Director General, GTEC ]. His office has refused to do the right thing, which is enshrined in the law. The right thing is in the law, and he’s not doing it,” he said.
The union insisted that the exclusion undermines its legal right to representation and sets a dangerous precedent for participatory governance within Ghana’s higher education system.
The union argues that despite holding majority membership across all traditional public universities in Ghana, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has sidelined its representatives in favour of those from the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union under the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC).

John Dumelo addresses flood damage and support farmers in Ketu North
Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, responded to an urgent call from local leaders in the Ketu North Constituency during a visit on July 4, 2025.
The visit, organised by Eric Edem Agbana, aimed to assess the damage caused by extensive flooding across more than 200 hectares of rice farms and underscores the government’s commitment to supporting the agricultural sector and addressing the challenges faced by farmers in the region.
During the visit, Dumelo and Agbana engaged directly with affected farmers, providing reassurance and outlining immediate steps for support.
In a post shared on his Facebook page on July 4, 2025, Eric Edem Agbana stated, “On my invitation, Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. John Dumelo, paid a working visit to my beloved Ketu North Constituency this afternoon. Together, we interacted with farmers and inspected sections of the over 200 hectares of rice farms that are currently flooded due to blocked canals.
