John Paintsil, former Ghana international and current Black Stars deputy coach, has guided his club, Paintsil FC, to a commanding qualification for the Greater Accra Regional Football Association Division Two Promotional Tournament.

Paintsil FC has clinched the Zone 5 Division Two League title with three matches to spare, a remarkable feat that reflects the team’s consistency and dominance throughout the season.

After 29 games played, the side has accumulated 69 points, boasting an impressive record of 20 wins, 7 draws, and only 2 defeats.

With qualification already secured, the results of the remaining three fixtures will have no bearing on their position at the top of the table.

The GA RFA Division Two Promotional Tournament is scheduled to run from June 7 to June 22, 2025, with the venue yet to be confirmed.

As Ghana’s second-most-capped player, John Paintsil brings a wealth of experience from his playing days in Europe, having featured for clubs such as West Ham United, Fulham, and Leicester City.

His coaching journey began at Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa, where he served as an assistant to Steve Komphela while still actively playing.

This achievement with Paintsil FC marks another significant milestone in his growing managerial career, and all eyes will be on his team as they aim to secure promotion in the upcoming tournament.

Speaking on TV3’s Key Points on Saturday, May 17, Dafeamekpor addressed the widely discussed issue that saw Sammy Gyamfi, the Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board (Goldbod), facing public backlash after a video surfaced showing him handing over dollar bills to Nana Agradaa at an event.

Mahama assures chiefs and people of Greater Accra of good roads

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, May 17, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has assured the chiefs and people of the Greater Accra Region of his Government’s determination to provide them with good roads under the Big Push – National Infrastructure Development Programme.

He reiterated that he was aware of the frustrations caused by the congestion in the capital, the poor maintenance of roads, and incomplete road projects.

President Mahama made the remarks in his address at the durbar of the chiefs and people of the Greater Accra Region in Dodowa during his national “Thank You Tour” of the region.

The national “Thank You Tour” is to enable the President express gratitude to Ghanaians for their massive support for him and the National Democratic Congress during the December 7, 2024, general elections.

The President said under the Big Push, there would be rehabilitation and construction of key road corridors; such as the Adenta-Dodowa Road, the La-Teshie Link, the Tema Harbour-Tema General Hospital-Motorway Road, the Apolonia-Oyibi Road and the Tema Motorway Expansion, which were ongoing.

Others are feeder roads in Ga East, Ga South, Ningo-Prampram, including roads in Shai-Osudoku, Ada East, and Ada West, which were going to be fast-tracked under the Big Push.

He said additionally, the government would reconstruct the road from Dahwenya to Afienya, from Afienya to Dodowa, and also from Doryumu to Dodowa, and the Ashaiman to Madina roads.

President Mahama said under the same programme, major expansion works would take place on the Liberation Road, the Polo Court Road, Airport Aviance-El Wak to Christ the King Corridor, and on the Ring Road from the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange all the way to the La Beach Hotel.

He said they would also begin the construction of the Greater Accra Outer Ring Road, which would allow traffic that was continuing to the northern part and to the western part of the country to bypass Accra without coming through the city.

“And so it means trucks and others coming from Lome and going to Kumasi or to Takoradi don’t need to come through Accra City, they’ll pass on the Outer Ring Road and continue their journey,” the President explained.

He said as a permanent fix to decongest Accra, the government would begin the design and feasibility study for a new city.

The President noted that some of the government offices and agencies would be moved out of Accra to the new city.

“I believe that this city will be located somewhere on the Accra plains from Bundasi, straddling across Greater Accra, Eastern and Volta regions. The city will straddle three regions,” the President said.

He said the new city would stretch to the banks of the Volta River and there would be a railway link and an expressway that would link the new city to Accra.

Oboade Notse King Professor Odaifio Welentsi III, the Nungua Mantse and President of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, congratulated President Mahama on his historic election victory and come back.

He said President Mahama’s remarkable election signified two important things- the strong faith the majority of Ghanaians had in him and their dissatisfaction with his opponents.

Women’s Football Festival: Coronation of two champions in one explosive day

0

A football feast like no other will descend on the University of Ghana Stadium, which is set to erupt with excitement as the nation’s two biggest women’s football competitions –the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League Final and the Women’s FA Cup Final – are staged back-to-back in a show-stopping Women’s Football Festival.

For the first time in the modern era, fans will be treated to the ultimate showcase of talent, grit and glory — two national titles, one stage, and a bold vision to elevate the women’s game to new heights.

Ampem Darkoa chase dynasty

In the headline act at 6:00 p.m., Ampem Darkoa Ladies, the northern powerhouse and four-time champions, will attempt to cement their dynasty with a fifth league title — one that will make them be at par with record-holders Hasaacas Ladies, who, for only the second time since 2012, are missing from the big stage.

Standing in their way is a spirited Police Ladies side making their maiden appearance in the league final. Led by the shrewd Abu Kassim and boasting one of the league’s meanest defences, they topped the Southern Zone unbeaten against Hasaacas and co., scoring 30 and conceding just eight goals in 18 games.

Although Ampem Darkoa will be without their talismanic top scorer, Mary Amponsah (15 goals), they will look up to striker Esther Owusu and goalkeeper Evelyn Yeboah, who boasts six clean sheets in nine outings.

For Police Ladies, in-form striker Mary Berko — eight goals and counting — and shot-stopper Barikisu Issahaku with six clean sheets of her own, are ready to take their title dream all the way.

Women’s FA Cup: New queens to emerge

However, before the league finale comes the main course appetiser — the Women’s FA Cup Final at 3:00 p.m., where Jonina Ladies face Faith Ladies in a fairytale showdown as both sides chase their first-ever FA Cup title and the honour of becoming Ghana’s sixth different champion since 2016.

Jonina have been nothing short of ruthless, smashing in 15 goals across five matches and breezing into the final without needing extra time once.

Faith Ladies, on the other hand, have walked the tightrope of knockout football, prevailing on penalties in three of their five matches, including a thrilling upset over giants Hasaacas Ladies.

Seasoned official Mercy Boakyewaa Gyan will take charge of the FA Cup final, assisted by FIFA referee Mary Tei and a stellar officiating team, while referee Rita Boateng Nkansah will oversee the Women’s Premier League finale.

The Women’s Football Festival is not a double-header just for logistical convenience. For the Ghana Football Association, it represents a powerful statement of intent to celebrate the strides made in Ghanaian women’s football and amplify its visibility, commercial appeal and legacy.

In a bold move to reward excellence, women’s football partner betPawa has announced a Double Locker Room Bonus, awarding GH¢800 each to players and selected staff of the league-winning team, paid directly into mobile wallets.

Trolls to throne: King Promise

0

For years, he was the butt of jokes on social media — a perennial nominee, never a winner of the big one. But at the 26th edition of the Telecel Ghana Awards (TGMAs), Gregory Bortey Newman, known as King Promise, silenced doubters and finally ascended the throne.

After years of being Ghanaian music’s nearly man, the silky-voiced crooner won the coveted Artiste of the Year crown, marking a moment of vindication and doing something distinctly Ghanaian yet internationally relevant.

King Promise’s journey to this pinnacle is a masterclass in resilience, a story of an artist who weathered the storms of criticism and near misses to emerge as one of Ghana’s most defining musical voices.

His victory at TGMA26, clinching four awards — Artiste of the Year, Best Album/EP of the Year, Best Afrobeats/Afropop Artiste of the Year, and Best Afropop Song for his global hit Paris. This marked the culmination of a decade-long journey, characterised by consistency, authenticity, and staying true to one’s craft—a clear depiction of his body of work, the “True To Self” album.

Born in Nungua, Accra, King Promise emerged in the Ghanaian music scene with a refreshing sound and an unmistakable aura. His debut single, “Oh Yeah,” in 2017 caught attention for its catchy rhythm and heartfelt lyrics, quickly earning him a spot among music’s rising stars in the country.

The release of his debut album “As Promised” in 2019 — a project that featured the likes of Wizkid, Kojo Antwi, Mugeez, Omar Sterling, Sarkodie, among others. The album featured songs like “Bra”, “Commando”, “My Lady”, “Tokyo”, and “CCTV” — marking his status as more than just a one-hit wonder.

The Fame Came With Trolls
But with fame came pressure. And with pressure came criticism — often harsh and sometimes undeserved. Despite consistently churning out hits and being a strong contender every year, the ultimate honour at the Ghana Awards always seemed to elude him.

Social media trolls quickly latched onto this pattern, turning his name into a meme during award seasons.

“Another year, another King Promise snub,” was a common jab. On Twitter, he became an example of talent overlooked, not for lack of skill, but for reasons that defied logic to many fans. “You don’t just become a one-hit wonder and claim to be the Artist of the Year, there is a lot more you need to do…” Posted on Twitter after King Promise lost the 2024 Artiste of the Year to Stonebwoy, this jab labelled him a “one-hit wonder,” a gross misrepresentation of his extensive discography.

The mockery wasn’t limited to his losses; even his fashion choices, like his oversized Balenciaga shoes at the awards, became fodder for ridicule, with users joking about his “big shoe, no trophy” aesthetic.

These posts, among countless others, illustrate the range of trolls, from questioning his talent and authenticity to mocking his ambition and style. The trolling wasn’t just about awards; it was personal, targeting his character and diminishing his contributions to Ghanaian music.

In one of the defences for King Promise in a 2018 tweet, social media influencer Ama Burland wrote;

“See…King Promise’s thing isn’t funny. He’s very good. You people are really like that when Medikal came with “by-heart boy” and “anthem” and the like, you were hailing him. Small award he didn’t win, naaa trolling. You want to do some for King Promise. Sellouts!”

Seven years later, King Promise took home the coveted Artiste of the Year award. Burland again wrote, referring to her 2018 tweet, “Seven (7) years later! From getting constantly snubbed to getting his recognition. Love you King Promise. Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!! You’ve always been him”.

The trolling took a toll, but King Promise refused to let it define him. He remained composed, rarely addressing the jabs directly. Instead, he channelled his energy into his music, building a catalogue that spoke louder than any tweet. His silence was strategic — a refusal to engage with the noise and a commitment to proving his worth through his art.

Turning The Curve
The year 2024 was a turning point. King Promise unleashed a musical onslaught that left no room for doubt. His single Terminator, a genre-blending masterpiece fusing Afrobeats, Amapiano, and dancehall, became a global phenomenon. Its infectious rhythm and universal appeal sparked a viral dance challenge that swept through TikTok and Instagram, with fans, influencers, and even celebrities joining in.

The song wasn’t just a hit — it was a cultural moment, cementing King Promise’s ability to create music that transcended borders.

Other tracks, like Perfect Combi, Keep It Sexy, and Paris, further showcased his evolution. His sound had matured, carrying a polished edge that balanced commercial appeal with artistic depth. Beyond the music, King Promise’s global presence grew. He embarked on sold-out tours across Europe, Asia, and North America, earning accolades for his electrifying live performances.

The boy from Nungua was no longer just a local hero — he had become a global ambassador for Ghanaian music, representing a new wave of artists pushing Ghanaian music onto the world stage.

Critics who once overlooked him began to take notice. Fans who had defended him through years of snubs felt validated. The narrative was shifting: King Promise wasn’t just promising anymore — he was delivering, and the world was listening.

The Night of Coronation
On the night of May 10th, 2025, at TGMA26, it became clear that this was King Promise’s moment. When the Artiste of the Year category — the evening’s most coveted award — was announced, his name echoed through the Grand Arena, and the reaction was electric. Cheers erupted, and social media exploded with pride.

King Promise also swept three other awards in addition to Artiste of the Year. Each win was a testament to his versatility and dominance in the industry. On stage, he exuded humility, his voice trembling with emotion as he thanked his team, family, fans, and even his critics. “This means more than words can describe,” he said. “Thank you for believing in me when many didn’t,” he said.

His acceptance speech was with no bitterness, no gloating — just gratitude and a quiet acknowledgement of the long road he’d travelled. He reflected on his first TGMA experience in 2018: seven nominations, zero wins.

“Whilst some people laughed, I just worked harder because I believe in God’s timing,” he said. “Today I am THE CHOSEN ONE!”.

And chosen he is. His message resonated far beyond music. It’s a blueprint for resilience, and a reminder that true kings don’t need to shout — they show up, year after year, and let the work speak.

The Future of the King
The Artiste of the Year title may be the pinnacle of King Promise’s career thus far, but it’s clear this is only the beginning. In interviews, he teased new projects. Fans can expect more singles, more tours, and, true to form, more hits.

King Promise’s reign is just getting started, but his legacy is already cemented. He’s not just an artist — he’s a symbol of what’s possible when talent meets tenacity.

The trolls may have had their moment, but the throne belongs to the King.

Policymakers have failed to learn a lesson from history and economics – Bawumia

0

Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticised contemporary global policymakers for failing to heed the fundamental lessons of history and economics, particularly in the handling of trade imbalances.

He made this remark while responding to a question on the weaponisation of trade and its impact on African economies, especially Ghana and what strategies can enhance the continent’s economic resilience at the International Democracy Union (IDU) Forum in Brussels on Saturday, May 17.

“I think that one of the things that policy makers are doing recently is failing to understand the lessons of history as well as the lessons of economics, we they are surely trading balances,” he stated.

He also cautioned against simplistic solutions such as tariffs, noting that trade deficits are deeply rooted in macroeconomic realities, not trade policy failures.

“If you look at the share of global trade, Africa contributes only 2.5% of global exports and 2.9% of imports,” Dr. Bawumia noted.

“In contrast, Asia accounts for 43% of global exports and 38% of imports, Europe 38% and 51% respectively, while the U.S. contributes 8% of exports and 14% of imports. These imbalances are real, but they cannot be fixed with tariffs.”

He explained that trade deficits result from a mismatch between national savings and investment, citing the national income identity as a basic economic principle.

“A country that spends more than it saves will inevitably run a trade deficit. This is a macroeconomic issue, not a trade policy issue.”

Referencing history, Dr. Bawumia pointed to the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of the 1930s, which imposed 20% tariffs and contributed to the Great Depression, as well as the U.S.–China trade war of 2018–2019, which disrupted global trade flows.

He also raised concerns over recent U.S. tariff hikes, noting the average rate has jumped from 2.4 per cent to 10 per cent — the highest since 1943.

While Africa is less exposed than other regions, Dr. Bawumia warned that specific countries like Lesotho, which rely heavily on textile exports to the U.S. through the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), could suffer severe consequences.

“When 50% of your exports are at risk, the impact will be significant,” he said.

Catholic Church in Accra to commence appointment of ‘married’ permanent deacons

File photo of an ordination of Catholic deacons File photo of an ordination of Catholic deacons

The Accra Archdiocese of the Catholic Church has instituted a “permanent diaconate” in the archdiocese.

This means that the Catholic Church in Accra will now be appointing married men as deacons to assist with pastoral work in the various churches in the archdiocese.

A statement issued by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, John Bonaventure Kwofie, which was sighted by GhanaWeb, indicated that the institution of the permanent diaconate was after consultation with the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, the College of Consultors, the Priests’ Council, the Priests and Religious of the Archdiocese, and the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council.

It explained that the institution of the permanent diaconate is to “strengthen the hierarchy of Sacred Orders, especially where the presence of priests is lacking,” as well as “aid in extending needed liturgical and charitable service where catechists and designated lay persons already play such functions.”

The statement added that permanent deacons will help bring an “official and sacramental presence to the Church in areas of secular life,” and “aid priests in matters sacramental and liturgical.”

The Church went on to list the following for one to become a permanent deacon:

i. Must fulfil those requirements valid for Sacred Orders in general, that is, men who “have sound faith, are motivated by the right intention, are endowed with the requisite knowledge, enjoy a good reputation, and have moral probity, proven virtue, and the other physical and psychological qualities appropriate to the order to be received.”

ii. Must be endowed with those human qualities necessary for exercising the diakonia, namely, psychological maturity, capacity for dialogue and communication, sense of responsibility, industriousness, equilibrium, and prudence, among others.

iii. Must be an active member of the Christian community in the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra for at least 10 years and have already exercised praiseworthy commitment to the apostolate.

iv. May carry out any professional activity, provided it is not inconsistent with the diaconal state.

v. Must be married and be between the minimum age of 45 and the maximum age of 55 years.

vi. Must have completed their tenth year in the sacrament of Holy Matrimony and have shown themselves to be capable of running their own homes, and whose wives and children lead a truly Christian life and have good reputations.

The Church indicated that all qualified Catholics who want to become permanent deacons are to apply through their pastors to undertake formation for the permanent diaconate.

“Not more than one candidate may be proposed from a parish community. The Archbishop will, upon receiving the request from the pastor, and in consultation with the Director of Formation and the Formation Team, accept or decline the request to undertake the formation,” it added.

Franklin Cudjoe Proposes Energy Sector Reforms to Tackle Crisis

0

Franklin Cudjoe, President of policy think tank IMANI Africa, has called on Ghana’s government to suspend plans to privatize segments of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), advocating instead for a five-step strategy to address the energy sector’s challenges.

In a social media post, Cudjoe criticized the energy minister’s “mobo” (forlorn) tone when discussing sectoral issues, urging proactive reforms over privatization. “Power is everything the lifeblood of any economy,” he stated, referencing the government’s goal of building a “24-hour economy.”

Cudjoe’s proposed framework, dubbed RESET (Revitalising the Economy through Stewardship & Ethical Transformation), prioritizes transparency and stakeholder collaboration. Key measures include a collaborative vision for reliable, cost-efficient power provision between the energy ministry and sector stakeholders, a commitment to open data, bi-weekly hybrid townhalls to discuss procurement and performance metrics, a digital enrollment system for public participation, and monthly stakeholder polls to assess progress.

He emphasized that these steps, implemented over 18 months, could revitalize ECG without privatization. The RESET model aims to complement existing audits and public financial management controls, fostering accountability and citizen engagement.

The proposal comes amid mounting concerns over legacy debts and operational inefficiencies in Ghana’s energy sector. Cudjoe’s recommendations highlight broader debates on balancing privatization with systemic reforms to ensure sustainable energy access a critical factor for economic stability.

Watch as Aglow International prays against ‘dumsor’, strikes and other labour agitations

Members of Aglow International Ghana Members of Aglow International Ghana

Aglow International Ghana has beseeched God to rescue Ghana’s energy sector, especially from power crises that could disrupt business operations.

The group called for divine direction for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) officials to make the right decisions regarding the alleged privatisation of their operations, to avoid worsening the state of the energy sector.

They believe that the issues in the energy sector, including debts owed to some power producers, ought to be dealt with, hence their call on God to salvage the situation.

“Let us be serious about this prayer topic because a lot of things will be affected if there is dumsor. The topic is the energy sector and the way forward for ECG. We pray that God should be gracious to Ghana and show our leaders clearly the specific areas that ought to be privatised,” the woman leading the prayer session said in a viral video on X.

They also implored God to bless the various labour unions with understanding, to avoid any form of strikes that would pose a significant challenge to the government.

“Let there also be a consensus on the labour front to avoid strikes and other forms of agitations,” she added.

Aglow International is headed by its President, Gifty Afenyi-Dadzie.

The group brings together women across the country to gather and intercede for the nation occasionally, seeking divine intervention.

Street begging crackdown to expand beyond Accra – Interior Minister

The Minister for Interior, Muntaka Mubarak has announced that the government’s crackdown on organised street begging will soon be extended to other regions beyond Accra, following the arrest of over 2,200 foreign nationals in a major enforcement operation.

In a Facebook post on Friday, 16 May 2025, the Minister disclosed that the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) had arrested a total of 2,241 foreign nationals during a targeted, intelligence-led operation in the Greater Accra Region.

The exercise, carried out in the early hours of the morning, aimed to dismantle networks believed to be behind the growing problem of organised street begging in the capital.

Among those detained were 909 adults and 1,332 children, comprising 961 males and 1,280 females.

Mr Mubarak commended the GIS personnel involved, describing their efforts as a vital contribution to national security.

“I want to commend the personnel of GIS for their commitment to national security,” he wrote.

However, the Minister’s remarks also made clear that this was only the beginning of a broader campaign.

“I have seen the public reactions and calls for similar actions in places like Kumasi, Tamale, and other communities. Please be assured that this is a nationwide exercise that began in Accra and will be extended to other regions soon.”

The Minister appealed for public support and cooperation as the operations move into new areas, calling on citizens to play a role in ensuring the safety and orderliness of their streets.

“Let’s work together to keep our streets safe,” he urged.

Jazz, Heritage, Conversations: UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce marks 2025 International Jazz Day in style

0

The UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce (UKGCC), a member-based trade association that promotes trade between Ghana and the United Kingdom, has hosted an evening of smooth rhythms, rich conversations and shared heritage to mark this year’s International Jazz Day at the African Regent Hotel in Accra.

The event, sponsored by Audiovisual Systems, Aphro Palm Spirits, African Regent Hotel and Standard Chartered Bank Ghana PLC, brought together a diverse crowd — from representatives of the UKGCC’s member companies to key Ghana and United Kingdom Government stakeholders, jazz lovers and art connoisseurs — for what many described as a unique celebration of culture, connection and commerce.

Set against the backdrop of soulful jazz melodies, guests mingled and networked, exploring business opportunities between Ghana and the United Kingdom. With curated beverage tastings, the evening was not just about deals and dialogue — it was a toast to the finer things in life.

Executive Director of the UKGCC, Adjoba Kyiamah, told the media that the event is part of UKGCC’s deliberate efforts to promote international business ties through cultural engagement.

“We create networking opportunities for our member companies to engage with each other as well as with key stakeholders,” she said. “This event is about building meaningful relationships in an informal, yet elegant, setting.”

Ms. Kyiamah added that the UKGCC organises such events regularly, alongside sector committee meetings to address issues affecting member businesses.

While she acknowledged that the first quarter of 2025 had brought mixed fortunes for some companies, she expressed optimism for a stronger rebound in the months ahead.

She urged businesses to join the UKGCC for the opportunity to benefit from the UKGCC advantage, which would help them leverage key relationships and shared experiences to expand their businesses and increase their profits.

The event featured a curated art exhibition which added a layer of cultural depth to the evening and showcased visual stories that, much like the jazz tunes playing in the background, spoke to the soul and celebrated the rhythm of life.

For many attendees, the 2025 Jazz and Heritage event was more than a business mixer. It was a refreshing reminder that at the heart of United Kingdom-Ghana trade lies community, culture and connection.

Veteran actor David Dontoh explains the meaning behind his surname

David Dontoh is a veteran Ghanaian playwright and actor David Dontoh is a veteran Ghanaian playwright and actor

Veteran Ghanaian actor and playwright David Dontoh has revealed the history behind his surname, explaining that it has deep roots in his Fante heritage.

Speaking in an interview with Samuel Attah-Mensah on Channel One TV, the legendary actor shared that “Dontoh” is actually a corrupted version of a Fante phrase meaning “you can’t buy love.”

“My name, Dontoh, is a corrupted form of the phrase ɔdɔ wɔn ntɔ, which means ‘you can’t buy love’,” he said.

Dontoh explained that the transformation of the name occurred during his grandfather’s time in school in the early 1900s.

According to him, when his grandfather went to school around 1912 or 1913, the European teachers at the time had difficulty pronouncing the Fante phrase correctly.

As a result, they shortened and modified it to “Dontoh,” which eventually became the family’s official surname.

“The whites could not pronounce ɔdɔ wɔn ntɔ, so they decided to shorten it to Dontoh. And that is how it got stuck,” he explained.

David Dontoh is a renowned Ghanaian actor and television personality known for his roles in numerous local and international films.

He is best recognised for his performances in films such as Beasts of No Nation, The Dead, The Cursed Ones, and Kukurantumi: Road to Accra, among others.

Throughout his career, David Dontoh has received several awards, including the Best Actor ECRAG Award in 1984, 1989, and 1992, as well as the Best Supporting Actor and World Centenary of Film Awards at the Ghana Film Awards in 1999.

The Maker’s House Chapel gives hope to families with special needs children

Dr Michael Boadi Nyamekye embraces children at the opening of The Maker’s House’s sensory unit Dr Michael Boadi Nyamekye embraces children at the opening of The Maker’s House’s sensory unit

LIn a heartwarming move that is changing lives and reshaping how churches approach children’s ministry, The Makers House Chapel International has launched a pioneering sunday school department with a dedicated special needs unit, the first of its kind in a Ghanaian church setting.

Tucked inside the church’s vibrant children’s complex, the new unit is not just a classroom—it’s a statement of love, empathy and radical inclusion.

Fitted with sensory rooms, assistive learning tools and specially trained volunteer teachers, the unit was created with one goal: to make every child feel welcome in the house of God, regardless of their abilities.

This inclusive sunday school unit is part of the newly built ultramodern children’s church which was recently opened in the church

At The Maker’s House Chapel International, one thing is clear: no child is too different to be loved, taught, and welcomed into God’s house.

For Eunice Nartey, a mother of a 7-year-old child on the autism spectrum, the new facility is an answered prayer.

“For the first time in years, I can go to church and worship without anxiety. I used to keep looking over my shoulder, afraid someone might judge my son. But now, I feel like we belong,” she said.

The initiative led by the General Overseer, Dr. Michael Boadi Nyamekye, is a bold response to the silent cry often overlooked in many faith communities.

“This is not just a room. This is ministry. We are called to love, and love must embrace difference. This special needs unit is a game-changer in our children’s mission—and a major catalyst for church growth,” Dr. Nyamekye said.

“We want parents who have stayed away from church because of stigma to know that this is a safe place for their children and their families”, he added.

To ensure excellence in care and instruction, all sunday school teachers in the special unit are receiving professional training from education and disability specialists.

This includes learning how to support children with autism, ADHD, down syndrome and other developmental or cognitive challenges.

Inside the sensory room, soft lighting, textured walls and gentle sounds create a calming environment for children who need breaks or sensory regulation during their learning.

Every aspect from teaching materials to classroom design has been crafted with empathy and expertise.

Parents have already begun expressing gratitude and hope.

For some, this marks the beginning of when they will begin to see their children engage joyfully in a church setting.

“My daughter will be happy to come to church…I have never seen this thoughtfulness happening in the church before,” Kwame Appiah, father of a child with speech delay, stated.

The new unit also challenges how society and the church define ability.

“The Gospel is for every child…We are not babysitting special children. We are raising disciples, celebrating their uniqueness and walking with them in faith for them to fulfill their destinies”, Dr. Michael Boadi Nyamekye stressed.

As word spreads, other churches will begin to inquire about replicating the model and it is expected to spark a broader conversation about inclusion within the Ghanaian Christian community.

Africa must accelerate policy action for a single digital market – BoG Governor

0

Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, has called on African nations to step up coordinated policy efforts to transform the continent into a single digital market.

He made the call while delivering opening remarks at the 3i Africa Policy Forum in Accra, a high-level meeting aimed at translating digital finance commitments into actionable strategies.

Held under the theme “One Africa, One Market: Driving Innovation, Investment, and Impact for a Connected Future,” the Forum brings together leaders in policy, regulation, finance, and technology to chart the way forward for digital financial integration across Africa.

Addressing participants at the Kempinski Hotel, Dr. Asiama described the theme as a strategic imperative rather than a mere aspiration. He said a connected future requires bold and coordinated action between the public and private sectors, grounded in forward-looking policies and the embrace of transformative technologies.

“Africa must no longer be seen as a patchwork of disconnected economies, but as a dynamic bloc powered by innovation and united by a commitment to inclusive and sustainable development,” he stressed.

Dr Asiama emphasised that the time has come to scale up promising national efforts through continental collaboration. While progress is visible in areas like fintech expansion, cross-border digital payments, and the creation of regulatory sandboxes, he warned that isolated national initiatives are not enough to achieve the broader vision of One Africa, One Market.

He highlighted several priority areas for immediate attention, including attracting sustainable investment into digital finance, harmonising regulatory frameworks to enable cross-border payments, empowering SMEs, operationalising the Digital Trade Protocol, responsibly adopting stablecoins and digital assets, and unlocking investor capital through strategic de-risking mechanisms.

“The aim is not just dialogue but deliverables — concrete steps that move us from intention to execution,” the Governor said.

Dr Asiama also announced a key cross-border collaboration involving the Bank of Ghana, the National Bank of Rwanda, and the Global Financial Technology Network (Singapore). The initiative, called the Next-Gen Digital Payment Infrastructure Project, seeks to modernise Africa’s cross-border payment ecosystem by piloting scalable, central bank-led solutions in partnership with fintechs and financial institutions.

He reaffirmed the Bank of Ghana’s commitment to the continental digital agenda, citing Ghana’s active participation in the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) and bilateral fintech passporting arrangements as evidence of progress.

As discussions began, the Governor urged participants to be pragmatic yet ambitious in crafting the building blocks of a connected African financial ecosystem by 2030.

“Let this Forum be a turning point where vision meets action, where policy enables innovation, and where Africa steps confidently into its role as a digital financial powerhouse,” he concluded.

The 23rd Annual Schools and Colleges Athletics Tournament came to a thrilling conclusion on Friday, May 16, 2025, at Sekondi College.

Over two days of intense competition, students from across the region showcased remarkable athletic talent in both track and field events, making this year’s tournament one of the most competitive in recent memory.

The tournament opened on Thursday with heats and preliminary events across several disciplines.

Adiembra Senior High School (ADISEC) made a strong statement in the boys’ category, winning the 4x200m in 1:32.88, the 5000m in 16:49, and the 4x100m finals in 46.16 seconds.

In the field, they added the shot put title with a throw of 10.10 meters.

In the girls’ division, Shama Senior High School (SHAAS) dominated, taking gold in the long jump (4.35m), 4x100m (53.67s), 4x200m (53.87s), and 800m (2:25.84).

Diabene SHS also stood out, winning the high jump with a clearance of 1.40 meters.

Friday was all about the finals, with bragging rights on the line, particularly in the 4x100m relays, which became the most anticipated events of the day.

In the boys’ 4x100m relay, ADISEC edged out SHAAS in a close and thrilling race.

In the girls’ final, however, SHAAS returned the favor, sprinting past ADISEC to claim the title.

Other notable events included the javelin throw finals in both the boys’ and girls’ categories, where technique, strength, and precision were on full display.

Among the standout athletes were Ibrahim Mbaw of ADISEC, who impressed in the sprints, and Lordina of SHAAS, who delivered a remarkable all-around performance.

Lordina competed in multiple disciplines, including the high jump, triple jump, javelin throw, 4x100m, and 4x400m, establishing herself as one of the tournament’s breakout stars.

Despite ADISEC’s strong start, they were unable to retain all their titles from last year, conceding two trophies to a resurgent SHAAS side.

After the points were tallied, Shama Senior High School (SHAAS) emerged as the overall champions in both the boys’ and girls’ categories:

Girls’ Category:

1. SHAAS – 179 points

2. ADISEC – 121 points

3. Sekondi College (SECKO) – 77 points

Boys’ Category:

1. SHAAS – 161 points

2. ADISEC – 129 points

3. Fijai SHS – 66 points

As the competition drew to a close, athletes were presented with certificates and medals in recognition of their performances.

The stadium atmosphere turned celebratory, with students dancing and cheering to music, marking the end of an unforgettable two days of school athletics in Sekondi.

The 23rd Annual Schools and Colleges Athletics Tournament not only highlighted the competitive spirit of participating schools but also uncovered a new generation of athletic talent.

With performances like those seen from the athletes, the future of athletics in the region looks bright.

Libyan ministers resign as protesters call for government to step down

0

Several ministers with Libya’s internationally recognised government have resigned in support of the protesters calling for Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah to step down.

The government late on Friday said a police officer was killed in an “attempted assault” on the prime minister’s office as thousands of Libyans marched into squares and various areas in the capital, Tripoli.

“He was shot by unknown attackers and succumbed to his injuries,” a statement said, adding that members of a group who mixed with the protesters tried to set the office on fire using Molotov cocktails.

Economy and Trade Minister Mohamed al-Hawij, Local Government Minister Badr Eddin al-Tumi and Minister of Housing Abu Bakr al-Ghawi resigned, according to a video released by two of those ministers as well as local media reports.

The government had earlier on Friday denied reports of the ministers’ resignations.

Meanwhile, in the city of Misrata, protesters gathered in support of Dbeibah and his government.

Dbeibah attempted to consolidate power and assert control after the killing, with more clashes following later in the week.

Before the demonstrations, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) had emphasised “citizens’ right to peaceful protest” and warned against “any escalation of violence”.

Reporting from Tripoli, Al Jazeera’s Malik Traina said Libyans want to see a major change as people are “extremely frustrated” with the security situation.

“Libyans are calling for elections and want to be able to voice their opinion and put those that they want in power,” he said.

Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Saturday that Cairo was closely monitoring developments in Libya, and urged all parties to exercise “maximum restraint”. It also advised Egyptian citizens in Libya to remain cautious and stay in their homes until the situation is clarified.

Libya has been in turmoil since a NATO-backed uprising in 2011, which ended up dividing the country between two rival administrations.

Dbeibah’s Government of National Unity (GNU) has maintained control over western Libya since 2021, while an administration backed by renegade military commander Khalifa Haftar leads in the east.

Libya was scheduled to hold national elections at the end of 2021, which were postponed indefinitely due to disputes over candidate eligibility, constitutional rules, and concerns over security as the rival governments failed to agree on a framework.

Congratulations for betraying others – Charlotte Oduro slams social media critics

Popular marriage counsellor and media personality, Charlotte Oduro, has voiced her disappointment with social media users who she says take pleasure in tearing others down.

In a video posted to Instagram on May 16, 2025, Oduro sarcastically congratulated such individuals, describing their actions as “diabolic” and harmful to society.

“Sometimes I sit and wonder how people celebrate evil,” she lamented. “Congratulations, because you’ve won by betraying someone. You’ve won by watching someone in pain—especially innocent people. And you’re happy, getting others to support and celebrate that evil.”

She accused critics on social media of orchestrating deliberate attempts to ruin reputations, lacking empathy, and rejoicing in the suffering of others.

Quoting scripture, she pointed to the Bible’s prophecy that a time would come when good would be seen as evil and evil as good, insisting that society is now witnessing that reality.

Citing the crucifixion of Jesus Christ as an example, Oduro encouraged those who have been unfairly attacked online to take comfort in knowing they are not alone.

“They may seem to have the upper hand today. The same happened to Jesus. The very people he sacrificed for ended up mocking him,” she said.

“He endured it in silence and went to the cross. Learn from Jesus. Let the whole world speak against you—just tell God to have mercy.”

Charlotte Oduro’s message served as both a rebuke to online bullies and a word of encouragement to victims of character assassination.

Assurances committee vows to hold politicians accountable

0

The Assurances Committee of Parliament has pledged to fulfil its mandate of holding government officials accountable for promises made to the public, while ensuring its work remains free from partisan influences.

The committee has emphasised its role in overseeing the execution of promises made by government appointees and MPs, with a focus on transparency and good governance.

Speaking during a three-day capacity-building workshop for committee members in Koforidua on Saturday, May 17, the Chairman of the committee, Dominic Nitiwul, who is also the Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, assured the public that the committee’s work will be conducted with the utmost professionalism and free from political bias.

“We intend to go after those who make assurances, and mostly it is the appointees who make the assurances on behalf of the executive, and the executive is the president. So, that is what we intend to do. It is not a witch-hunting process,” Nitiwul stated.

Nitiwul stressed that the committee’s goal is not to target individuals, but rather to ensure that promises made by members of the executive branch and Parliament are honoured. The committee, which is tasked with monitoring the fulfilment of promises made on the floor of Parliament, is particularly focused on the actions and follow-through of appointees within the executive branch.

As part of its efforts to maintain transparency and public trust, the committee plans to hold regular public sittings, starting in July, where both ministers and opposition MPs will be probed on their promises. Nitiwul assured that the committee would remain visible and accessible to the public to carry out its important work.

“We are a committee of Parliament here to undertake a three-day exercise to monitor the performance of the appointees regarding the promises made in Parliament and hold them accountable. It is to ensure that Parliament is strong enough to do what they are supposed to do. We will begin public sittings in July,” Nitiwul confirmed.

Alhaji Muhammad Bawah Braimah, the Ranking Member of the Assurances Committee and Member of Parliament for Ejura-Sekyedumase, also emphasised the committee’s resolve to operate in the interest of the Ghanaian people, ensuring that resources entrusted to public officials are properly managed and accounted for.

“This committee is going to work in the interest of Ghanaians to ensure that any cedi which has been entrusted in the public officials is properly accounted for and to ensure that there is good governance. For that matter, we are not going to be partisan,” Braimah asserted.

When my people fall sick Ghana Health Service turns its back at them – President of Community Health Nurses Association

0

Community Health Nurses across Ghana are calling for improved incentives and better working conditions to enhance healthcare delivery.

The appeal was made during the National Special Delegates Conference held in Sunyani under the theme: “Welfare and Condition of the Community Health Nurse in the CHPS Programme: Achieving Quality Universal Health Coverage.”

Community Health Nurses, who play a vital role in Ghana’s healthcare system especially in rural and underserved areas under the Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) initiative say their efforts are being hampered by inadequate support.

Esther Frimpomaa Bamfo, National President of the Community Health Nurses Association Ghana (CoHNAG), highlighted key challenges, including delayed promotions, insufficient logistics, and poor accommodation.

“Our members face numerous challenges. How can we deliver quality healthcare when our welfare is neglected? We demand urgent action from the government and health authorities,” she said.

Madam Bamfo also expressed frustration over what she described as neglect by the Ghana Health Service during difficult times. “When my people fall sick Ghana Health Service turn their back at them, when they have an accident Ghana Health Service turn their back at them, it’s so painful to treat such people in this way,” she lamented.

In response, Dr. Prince Quarshie, Bono Region Deputy Director of Public Health, acknowledged the concerns and assured nurses of steps to address them.

“We recognize the sacrifices of community health nurses. The Ghana Health Service is working on actionable steps to improve your welfare, including better incentives and resource allocation. Your role is vital to achieving universal health coverage,” he said.

Bono Regional Minister Joseph Addae Akwaboa also pledged the government’s commitment to resolving the issues.

“Government is committed to addressing your challenges. We will engage stakeholders to ensure conducive working environments and timely incentives. Your dedication to grassroots healthcare is commendable,” he stated.

With universal health coverage as a national priority, stakeholders agree that empowering community health nurses is essential. However, nurses remain cautiously optimistic, awaiting tangible improvements.

As the conference concluded, the pressing question remains: Will these assurances translate into real change for Ghana’s frontline healthcare workers?

World Vision Ghana launches Border Project to support communities in Upper East and Upper West regions

0

Accra, May 17, GNA-Communities in Ghana’s Upper East and Upper West regions are expected to benefit from a set of interventions under the newly launched BORDER Project, spearheaded by World Vision Ghana.

The initiative, which aims to promote development and strengthen regional stability, is being implemented in collaboration with RACED Ghana and with funding support from the PATRIP Foundation.

This was in a statement from World Vision Ghana copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra.

The project is targeting some of the most vulnerable areas along Ghana’s northern frontier, including Zini, Fielmo, and the Zini Refugee Camp in the Sissala West District; Bansi and Issakatinga in the Binduri District; and Tarikom along with the Tarikom Refugee Camp in the Bawku West District.

These communities were selected due to their growing exposure to climate shocks, severe food insecurity, environmental degradation, and an increasing influx of refugees from neighbouring Burkina Faso.

The project will directly benefit 19,219 individuals, comprising 13,454 Ghanaians and 5,765 Burkinabe refugees, and is expected to indirectly impact an additional 33,657 residents across the five target communities and two refugee settlements.

The strain on already limited resources has intensified socio-economic pressures, heightening the risk of social tensions and threatening local peace and cohesion.

Key interventions under the BORDER Project involved the provision and rehabilitation of solar-powered water systems and the construction of biofill ecological sanitation facilities for homes, schools, and health centres.

The rest are the refurbishment of healthcare facilities, with a focus on maternal and child health; the establishment of drip irrigation systems to support year-round farming; and the training of farmers in climate-smart agricultural techniques.

It also seeks to promote sustainable land use through Community Resource Management Areas and build capacity for traditional leaders, local authorities, and security personnel in peace building and conflict resolution.

The BORDER Project is aligned with Ghana’s National Development Plan 2030, the United Nations Sustainable

Development Goals, and the Gulf of Guinea Joint Response Plan.

By investing in essential infrastructure and building the capacity of local communities, the initiative seeks to trigger a lasting ripple effect of peace, prosperity, and resilience across Ghana’s border regions and the wider West African sub-region.

Entertainment pundit and media personality Kwame Dadzie has expressed disappointment in Beeztrap’s performance at the 26th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), despite the artiste winning the “Best New Artiste of the Year” award.

Speaking on Joy Prime TV during a post-event review of the 2025 TGMAs, Kwame Dadzie revealed that he had high expectations for the young artiste, given his admiration for Beeztrap’s music and artistry.

However, he said he was left unimpressed by what he described as a disorganised and underwhelming live performance.

“If I had a cane, I would’ve lashed Beeztrap. The way I believe in that guy, how much I like his craft, and with that poor performance on the night, it was disappointing,” he said.

Kwame Dadzie further explained that Beeztrap’s delivery lacked clarity and direction, leaving the audience unsure about the intent of his performance.

“New Artiste of the Year, and he was performing live, I didn’t know whether he wanted to rap or sing. Everything was all over the place, and that wasn’t a good performance,” he stated.

Ghana’s National Hajj Taskforce has rejected claims of delivering poor service to Ghanaians it took to the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com, the Chairman of the Taskforce, Collins Dauda, described claims of poor service delivery as mere propaganda.

He said that the service delivery to the Ghanaian pilgrims has been top-notch, questioning the validity of the claims of poor services.

“I’ve been pronounced dead before, but I still live. Several people have been pronounced dead on social media, yet they still live. We all know the extent to which social media can divert attention and mislead people.

“If you have a hotel accommodating about 6,000 people and one room’s air conditioner is a problem, is there an issue? It shouldn’t be an issue. It shows clearly where the person is coming from.

He added, “It happens everywhere; in your homes, don’t you encounter situations from time to time?” he said.

Former Capital Bank MD William Ato Essien denied bail pending appeal of 15-year jail term

0

William Ato Essien, former MD of now-defunct Capital Bank William Ato Essien, former MD of now-defunct Capital Bank

The Accra High Court has denied a bail application filed on behalf of William Ato Essien, the founder of the defunct Capital Bank, who is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence for stealing over GH¢90 million from the bank.

Essien, who served as the Managing Director of Capital Bank, was convicted in October 2023 after failing to fulfill the terms of a plea bargain agreement brokered by the then-Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame.

The agreement allowed him to avoid a custodial sentence by repaying the state GH¢90 million in three installments.

Under the arrangement, Essien was required to make payments as follows; an initial sum by April 28, 2023, a second by August 31, 2023, and a final installment by December 15, 2023.

Though he paid GH¢30 million in December 2022, he defaulted on the subsequent payments.

At the time of sentencing, Justice Kyei Baffour noted that Essien had managed to pay only GH¢7 million of the outstanding GH¢40 million due under the agreement. As a result, he was sentenced to 15 years of hard labour.

Following his conviction, Essien filed an appeal against the sentence. On Friday, May 16, 2025, his legal team, led by Baffour Gyawu Bonsu Ashia (standing in for Thaddeus Sory), applied for bail pending the determination of the appeal.

Meanwhile, the prosecution, represented by State Attorney Frederick Adu-Gyamfi, indicated that the Attorney General’s office did not oppose the application.

However, presiding over the bail hearing, Justice Emmanuel Lodoh exercised judicial discretion to deny the application, ruling that Essien remain in custody as his appeal progresses through the legal system.

Cedi’s gains driven by fiscal-monetary alignment – Inusah Fuseini

0

Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has attributed the recent strength of the Ghanaian cedi to the effective coordination of fiscal and monetary policies under the Mahama-led administration.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV‘s The Big Issue on Saturday, May 17, Fuseini emphasised that the notable improvement in the cedi’s performance is not merely the result of external economic conditions but rather the outcome of deliberate policy alignment by the current government.

“I think that it’s the congruence of the monetary and fiscal policy of the government that is driving the change in value of the cedi, the strength of the cedi,” he stated.

According to Fuseini, while external factors such as global market dynamics affect the entire West African subregion, other currencies in the region — including the CFA franc and the Nigerian naira — are not performing as strongly as the cedi.

“When you look at the West African subregion, the exogenous factors affect all of us, but the CFA is not performing that well, neither is the Nigerian naira,” he pointed out. “So largely, I try to discount what the external factors are.”

His comments support growing sentiment that the cedi’s recent appreciation is being driven by domestic policy decisions rather than international market forces alone.

Economic observers have noted improved market confidence, increased investor interest, and disciplined fiscal management as contributing factors to the cedi’s performance.

Dada KD was doing well before his demise

0

King Pee, the manager of the late Ghanaian Highlife legend Dada Kwaku Duah, popularly known as Dada KD, has confirmed the singer’s death and strongly refuted rumours suggesting that the musician died broke or under controversial circumstances.

Speaking to *Ghana Weekend* on Saturday, May 17, 2025, King Pee revealed that the singer fell suddenly ill on Friday, May 16. He became inactive and unresponsive, prompting his househelp to alert close associates, who then rushed him to the Gbawe SDA Hospital. Sadly, he was pronounced dead later that night.

“Dada KD wasn’t sick. He suddenly went quiet, and when we rushed him to the hospital, he couldn’t make it,” King Pee recounted.

The family is expected to issue an official statement in due course.

Responding to widespread social media rumours, King Pee firmly denied reports that the Highlife icon had been struggling financially, battling psychological issues, or had been shot in a recording studio.

He clarified that a video currently circulating and portraying the musician as being in distress was filmed five years ago during an interview with Kofi Adoma and has no relevance to his recent life.

“Dada KD was not broke. He was doing very well,” King Pee emphasised. “He was supposed to submit his UK visa application today for a show next Saturday. He didn’t have issues with anyone. People just post things online for attention.”

The late musician, known for timeless Highlife classics such as *Yebeye Yen Ho Fi*, *Obiaa Se Eye*, *Odo Mu Anigye*, *Ene Me Nye*, and *So Mu Gye*, is survived by five children and a fiancée based in the United States.

Dada KD’s sudden death marks a painful loss for fans of authentic Ghanaian Highlife music and a tragic end to a celebrated musical career.

“They Can Come for It” – Kofi Jumah Offers State Vehicle but Demands Return of His Properties

0

Maxwell Kofi Jumah, the former Managing Director of GIHOC Distilleries, expressed his willingness to surrender a vehicle reportedly sought by national security, days before a raid was conducted on his residence as reported by Ghana Web.

The early morning operation on May 15, 2025, targeted the retrieval of alleged state vehicles believed to be in Jumah’s possession. At the time of the raid, he was reportedly not at home.

Prior to the incident, Jumah took to social media, indicating his readiness to hand over the car in question, a Genesis G90 saloon. However, he also demanded that his personal assets—allegedly of higher value—be returned in exchange.

“They can come for it. They should also prepare to hand over my properties to me. It is more than the car,” he posted.

A letter from the GIHOC board dated August 1, 2019, had authorized Jumah’s purchase of the luxury vehicle at GH¢4,943.11, a fraction of the estimated market value of GH¢98,862.00 as appraised by the State Transport Company.

The former appointee under former President Akufo-Addo is currently under investigation for alleged financial impropriety.

Accusations range from questionable vehicle acquisitions to unauthorized sale of company property in Tema, reportedly worth over $700,000.

He is also said to have retained two other official vehicles without formal board clearance—one of which was allegedly used by his son.

Reports suggest that one of the vehicles has since been recovered and returned to Accra.

Meanwhile, investigations into possible mismanagement, including inflated staff numbers, are ongoing.

E/R: All 33 MMDCEs confirmed

0

The Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Mark Oliver Kevor, has expressed satisfaction with the smooth confirmation of all 33 MMDCE nominees in the region, attributing this success to effective and constructive engagement with the region’s Minority Members of Parliament (MPs).

In what is considered a remarkable feat, all the nominees for the MMDCE positions, put forward by President John Dramani Mahama, were confirmed in a single exercise without any rejections. Dr. Kevor believes that this unanimous approval is a direct result of the fruitful working relationship between the NDC leadership in the region and both the NDC and Minority MPs.

“We were not petty in wondering about people who were favourable to the region, the minister, or the MP, but genuine people that we thought would be accepted by the people. They have earned it on merit and deserve it. All the confirmed people were those that we shortlisted for the nomination, and the president also nominated from that list. We are grateful to the president for that.”

Out of the 33 constituencies in the Eastern Region, the NDC occupies 8 parliamentary seats, with one independent MP, while the Minority New Patriotic Party (NPP) holds the remaining 24 constituencies. Despite the NPP’s dominance in the region, the smooth confirmation process showcases a rare display of cross-party cooperation, with the NDC leadership crediting the involvement of all MPs, including those from the Minority, for the success.

Dr. Kevor highlighted that the process was not driven by political favouritism but by the collective interest of advancing the region’s development. He commended the president for his responsive leadership, which he believes contributed to the merit-based selection of the nominees.

“The one-touch confirmation of all the MMDCEs is a clear indication that all the nominees earned it on merit after contributing immensely to the successes of the party over the years,” Dr. Kevor stated.

Media personality and entertainment journalist Tilly Akua Nipaa has offered insight into the meaning behind King Promise’s performance at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs).

Speaking during a discussion on Joy Prime TV, Tilly, who served as the official Public Relations Officer for King Promise in the lead-up to the awards night, revealed that the performance was a tribute to the global journey of King Promise’s music.

She noted that the 21 national flags displayed during the performance of Continental represented the 21 countries the Afrobeats artiste toured in 2024.

According to her, each flag symbolised King Promise’s effort to take Ghanaian music to the world.

“The flags represent the 21 countries that King Promise visited in 2024 as part of his tour. So every flag you saw there, he took Ghanaian music there, and that’s why when he went home with the Artiste of the Year award, it was no joke. Every flag you saw, he had been there with his music,” she explained.

Director of Passports reacts to warrant for his arrest

Kwasi Asante was appointed Director of Passports in 2024 Kwasi Asante was appointed Director of Passports in 2024

The Director of Passports, Kwasi Asante, has reacted to reports of a bench warrant issued by the Accra High Court for his arrest over the issuance of more than eight passports to an accused person who was being prosecuted.

In a public notice copied to GhanaWeb, Asante clarified that the incident occurred long before he took office as Director of Passports.

He stated that he was not involved in the issuance of the said passports and urged the public to disregard any insinuations of wrongdoing on his part.

“I wish to clarify that the recent reports regarding a matter at the Passport Office are inaccurate. The incident in question occurred before I assumed office at the Passport Office.

“I kindly request that the public disregard the misinformation and note that I was not involved in the matter, as it predates my tenure. I am committed to transparency and accountability in my role,” he wrote.

According to court documents sighted by GhanaWeb, although the accused person had been discharged following the withdrawal of the case by the Attorney-General, the presiding judge still requested that the Director of Passports appear before the court to explain how a single individual was issued more than eight passports.

The documents indicated that the bench warrant was issued during court proceedings on Friday, 16 May 2025, after the director failed to honour the court’s directive.

The documents further indicated that although Asante had been duly served, he had failed to appear before the court.

Kwasi Asante was appointed Director of Passports by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in December 2024.

Timber exporters without FLEGT license can’t access EU market – Dr Brown

Forestry Commission CEO, Dr Brown speaking at the event play videoForestry Commission CEO, Dr Brown speaking at the event

Timber and Wood industry players without the Forestry Law Enforcement Governance and Trade (FLEGT) license would not be able to export their products to the European Union (EU) market after June 30, this year, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Forestry Commission, Dr Hugh C. A. Brown, has cautioned.

Also, industry players operating domestically would also be required to obtain a Domestic Timber Inspection Certificate (DOTIC) license by the same time before they can operate.

FLEGT license is a voluntary partnership agreement between Ghana and the EU signed in 2009 which seeks to ensure that timber and wood products exported to the EU from Ghana are legally compliant.

Speaking at a meeting organised by the Forestry Commission in Accra with stakeholders on the implementation of the FLEGT licensing and the role of the players in ensuring a smooth transition, Dr Brown said the FLEGT agreement was to ensure that timber and wood products exported to the EU from Ghana were legal.

He said the only way to ensure compliance was through the issuance of the FLEGT license.

Dr Brown indicated that the smooth rollout of the FLEGT guidelines would ensure that illegal logging was curtailed to enable key stakeholders or owners of the resource get their share.

He said through this, deforestation would also be reduced to the minimum when illegal logging is brought under control in the country.

The CEO also hinted that there would be an increase in revenue collection since every wood harvested would be subjected to the FLEGT guidelines.

To this end, he called on industry players to ensure total compliance with the rules and regulations of FLEGT to ensure a smooth running of their businesses.

The Acting Executive Director, Timber Industry Development Division of the Forestry Commission, Dr Richard Gyimah, said that under the FLEGT, laws and regulations that guided timber harvesting would be followed strictly.

He also spoke about the guidelines on transportation of the timber, milling at the saw mills, the domestic and international trading and the exportation process.

Dr Gyimah noted that industry players would have to show the source of their timber before they would be issued with an FLEGT license.

The President of the Ghana Timber Association, Alexander Kinsgfred Dadzie, on his part, said their members were aware and welcomed the FLEGT licensing guidelines.

He however reiterated the associations concerns with the absence of a number of committees’ nonexistence and communication challenges prior to the implementation of the FLEGT.

GFA have made football more popular; other Federations should learn from them – Kofi Adams

Kofi Adams has urged sports federations to be proactive in delivering their mandate Kofi Adams has urged sports federations to be proactive in delivering their mandate

The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has commended the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for its relentless efforts in making football activities more attractive and prominent in the country.

He noted that the level of attention football has gained in Ghana is impressive, from the various national teams to the local leagues, both male and female.

The Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency also called on other sporting federations in the country to adopt the strategies employed by the GFA to revive and enhance their respective disciplines.

“The story of the GFA should guide all of us on what we must do with our federations. We need to leave here knowing very well that football didn’t just gain the attention it’s getting by chance — something happened to give it that attention. It didn’t just wake up one morning and start receiving this level of recognition,” he said.

“We need to understand what happened and learn from it to bring similar progress to our federations. There’s a saying in my village that when you’re an orphan and parents are advising their children, you stand behind the window and listen, so you take a cue, because you’re an orphan,” he added during an engagement with sports stakeholders, as reported by myjoyonline.com.

Currently, 46 sporting federations are registered under the National Sports Authority (NSA); however, many struggle to remain relevant and gain visibility.

The minister has pledged to collaborate with all sports federations to help them become more competitive and achieve greater prominence.

Finance Ministry, BoG synergy yielding good results

0

Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, Samson Asaaki Awingobit, has lauded the growing stability of the Ghanaian Cedi and easing inflation, crediting it to improved coordination between the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana under President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, May 17, 2025, Asaaki pointed to what he described as effective collaboration between Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Asiamah — a marked shift from the disjointed policy approach he says characterized the previous administration.

“The Minister of Finance and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana under the previous administration were not communicating as two institutions will work. What I’m saying is that these two institutions must work together.”

He said the current policy synergy is crucial for macroeconomic recovery, restoring business confidence and attracting investment.

“Fiscal policy must go along with monetary policy to be able to bring confidence of inflation down, bring confidence of Cedi stability and that is what Dr. Asiamah and Hon. Ato Forson have done. And so we need to applaud them and say that look, going forward they need to work together because the President put them there to help him give confidence to business and woo more investors into this country.”

Asaaki expressed optimism that the current trajectory of economic stability will drive renewed investor interest in Ghana’s economy.

“With this few days you will see the number of investors who will be looking to come to Ghana.”

The Cedi has seen a sustained recovery over the past month, while inflation has declined steadily — trends the business community sees as early indicators of sound macroeconomic management under the current administration.

In an interview with Deloris Frimpong Manso on the Delay Show, Nana Romeo recounted how Gaisie used their friendship and his knowledge of the help provided to him by his girlfriend to snatch her away from him, stating that he believes the preacher probably used a ‘spell’ to change his girlfriend’s mind.

GHS takes measures to check Mpox outbreak

0

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has initiated contact tracing efforts to identify individuals who might have come into contact with the two confirmed cases of Monkeypox (Mpox) earlier reported in the Accra Metropolitan Area.

It said those contacts would be monitored for symptoms and provided with the appropriate care and guidance.

These formed part of the necessary public health measures the GHS was swiftly and effectively implementing to contain the spread of the virus after two such cases were confirmed in the country last Thursday

These were contained in a press release issued by the acting Director-General of the GHS, Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, on May 15, announcing the confirmation of two cases of Mpox in Accra.

Mpox is a viral disease that is transmitted to humans through close contact with an infected person or animal or with material contaminated with the virus.

Symptoms typically include rash, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy and swollen lymph nodes.

Ghana recorded its first case of Mpox in June 2022 with five cases. Since the beginning of 2022, Ghana recorded 116 confirmed cases of Mpox with four confirmed deaths. By the latter part of that year, Ghana reported nine new confirmed cases, with no new deaths.

The release said the service was enhancing surveillance in health facilities and communities to ensure that any further suspected cases were identified and investigated promptly.

“The Ministry of Health and the service are also intensifying public awareness campaigns to educate the populace about Mpox, including its symptoms, modes of transmission, and preventive measures.

“The government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service, is committed to protecting the health and well-being of all citizens and residents,” it addeid.

It assured the public that there was no cause for alarm, emphasising that it had the capacity and the expertise to manage the current situation and prevent a larger outbreak.

It maintained that Ghana’s public health system remained vigilant and that established protocols for the detection, management and control of infectious diseases were being rigorously followed.

The GHS, however, urged the public to practise good hand hygiene, avoid close contact with individuals exhibiting symptoms such as rash, and immediately report any suspected cases to the nearest health facility.

Ghanaian fashion icon Nana Akua Addo has revealed that her goal on the red carpet is always to be unique, different, and unforgettable.

Known for consistently making bold statements at major red-carpet events, Nana Akua shared in an interview on 3FM what goes into designing her eye-catching looks.

According to her, the goal is always to stand out and offer something new.

She explained that she takes time to research past looks and focuses on introducing fresh ideas and techniques to the red carpet.

“To be unique, to be different, and also to stand out, you want to go back to previous looks, see what hasn’t been done, what people haven’t seen. I always like to introduce something new, a new technique in terms of sewing, in terms of intricacy in fashion and design,” she stated.

Nana Akua Addo added that one of her biggest fears is showing up in an outfit someone else is wearing. For this reason, she and her team plan meticulously to ensure that her look is exclusive.

“I always pray that I never show up on the red carpet and see someone else wearing my look. These are things we carefully plan for,” she said.

She also pointed to Nigeria as an example of a country where red-carpet creativity is taken to another level. She explained that whenever she prepares for events there, she feels the need to go the extra mile because the standard is so high.

Dr Bawumia predicts paradigm shift toward African self-reliance

0

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is Ghana's former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is Ghana’s former Vice President

Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has predicted a paradigm shift in Africa’s trade dynamics as global tensions continue to escalate.

According to him, the recent spike in US tariffs will accelerate Africa’s move toward self-reliance and stronger regional integration.

Addressing delegates at the International Democrat Union (IDU) forum in Brussels, Dr Bawumia stated, “The U.S. has increased its average tariff rate from about 2.4% to 10%, the largest increase since 1943. The impact of this will not be insignificant,” he said, emphasising the ripple effects such protectionist policies could have on vulnerable African markets.

While Africa’s overall trade with the U.S. remains relatively small, accounting for just 6.5% of exports and 4.4% of imports, Dr Bawumia highlighted countries like Lesotho that rely heavily on U.S. markets.

He specifically cited the country’s textile industry, which sends nearly half of its exports to the United States under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), as being particularly at risk.

“What you’re going to see in Africa, as you’re seeing across the world, is more clamour for self-reliance. And you’re going to see more political space being created for intra-African trade as a way of dealing with this,” he added.

Dr Bawumia’s remarks add to growing calls for Africa to accelerate the implementation of frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a buffer against shifting global trade policies.

The Amount of Money Ghanaians MPs Receive As Ex-Gratia After One Term

The Amount of Money Ghanaians MPs Receive As Ex-Gratia After One Term

News Hub Creator22min

In Ghana, Members of Parliament (MPs) are entitled to a substantial end-of-service benefit known as ex-gratia, paid at the conclusion of each four-year parliamentary term. This payment is a long-standing part of the benefits package for Article 71 officeholders, which includes MPs, ministers, the president, and other high-level officials.

For MPs, the ex-gratia amount is calculated as four months’ consolidated salary for every year served. With the average monthly salary of a Ghanaian MP estimated at GH¢29,000, the math becomes straightforward. Four months of salary equals GH¢116,000 per year. Over a four-year parliamentary term, this results in a total ex-gratia payment of GH¢464,000 for each MP.

This lump sum is paid in full at the end of the term, regardless of whether the MP is re-elected or not. The payment has been a source of public debate, especially considering Ghana’s economic challenges and calls for greater accountability and fairness in public spending.

Despite public pressure, ex-gratia remains constitutional, and Parliament has defended it as compensation for the high demands and financial sacrifices of public service.

9 killed in Russian strike on civilian bus in Ukraine

0

Nine people have been killed in a Russian drone attack on a civilian minibus in north-eastern Ukraine, local officials say.

Regional military leaders said seven other people were injured in the attack on Saturday morning in Bilopillia, Sumy, as the minibus travelled to the regional capital close to Russia’s border.

The report came just hours after Russia and Ukraine held their first direct peace talks since 2022. No breakthrough was achieved, although a prisoner of war swap was agreed.

Volodymr Zelensky, Ukraine’s president, said the attack was “a deliberate killing of civilians”. Russia has not commented directly but state media reported forces had hit a “military staging area” in Sumy.

Zelensky added that Russian forces “could not help but understand what kind of vehicle they were hitting”.

Citing preliminary information, Sumy regional head Oleh Hryhorov said the bus was hit by a Russian Lancet drone at 06:17 local time on Saturday (03:17 GMT). He described the attack as “inhumane”.

Friday’s talks in Istanbul, Turkey, did not lead to any breakthrough as Ukraine and Russia remain far apart on how to end the war.

However, it was agreed that each side would return 1,000 prisoners of war to the other in the coming days.

Zelensky said of the talks that “as on any day of this war, there was an opportunity to cease fire. Ukraine has been offering this for a long time.”

The bus was hit in the town of Bilopillia, Ukrainian officials say

Following the Istanbul discussions, Ukraine reiterated its call for a full and unconditional ceasefire but a deal with Russia remained elusive.

Ukraine said the next step in the process would be direct talks between Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky and Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

Russia said it had “taken notice” of the request.

The US has claimed that progress on ending the war would only be made if President Donald Trump and Putin held face-to-face talks.

During a visit to the Middle East, Trump told reporters on Air Force One “nothing’s going to happen until Putin and I get together”.

“He wasn’t going if I wasn’t there and I don’t believe anything’s going to happen, whether you like it or not, until he and I get together,” Trump added.

Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Ukraine used Sumy to launch offensives into Russia’s Kursk region in August. Russia drove the majority of Ukraine’s troops back earlier this year and has intensified cross-border artillery and air attacks in recent months.

Earlier this week before talks began with Ukraine, Russia carried out drone strikes across the region, killing three people and injuring nine others, according to Sumy’s regional military administration.

On Saturday, Ukrainian drones reportedly struck an ammunition depot in Crimea, the region illegally annexed by Russia in 2014.

According to Reuters, Ukraine’s strike caused the detonation of warehouses where military equipment, weapons and fuel was stored.

Watch as Bawumia impresses IDU Forum with his perspective on global politics and trade stability

Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia speaking at IDU forum on trade issues Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia speaking at IDU forum on trade issues

At the International Democratic Union (IDU) forum this week, former Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia joined a high level panel of global leaders to discuss the subject ‘Trade Wars, Tariff Battles and the New Geoeconomic Order: How to Restore Stability”.

Dr Bawumia moved the audience with his incisive perspective on how to restore stability in the midst of global trade uncertainties.

Dr Bawumia explained that trade imbalances are as a result of macroeconomic imbalances, adding that tariffs cannot be used to fix macroeconomic imbalances and any attempt to do so is bound to fail as history has shown.

The former Vice President also stressed that at the heart of trade wars and negotiations is the element of trust (as is happening between the United States and China), describing it as “mutually assured suspicion” which, he noted, has the tendency to result in suboptimal outcomes in trade negotiations.

He urged key global players to resolve the issues of mistrust amongst them.
