Tema Youth President Wilfred Osei Kweku Palmer has revealed that Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku reported him to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) over alleged death threats.

He stated that he was summoned to the regional police headquarters for questioning after Okraku accused him of making death threats, which he vehemently denied.

After denying the allegations, Palmer claimed he was not contacted again regarding the case, implying that it is no longer being pursued.

In an interview with Asempa FM, Palmer noted that despite the challenges he faced under Okraku’s administration, he hold nothing against him.

“Kurt reported me, claiming I wanted to take his life. My friends know I’m not capable of such a thing. I was invited to the regional police headquarters, where they informed me of Kurt’s accusations, citing our past issues.

“I told them I hold no grudges, having put the past behind me. Since then, the police haven’t contacted me, and the case seems to have died down naturally. He took me to the IGP,” Palmer said in Twi.

Okraku has faced criticism from some football stakeholders since becoming GFA president in 2019, with some believing he has not treated them fairly.

Minister of Energy-designate, John Jinapor, made a surprising retreat over the Gold for Oil policy when he appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 13, 2025.

The policy, introduced by the previous government in February 2023 and championed by then Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to mitigate Ghana’s forex crisis and stabilize fuel prices, was heavily criticized by John Jinapor, then Minority Spokesperson on Mines and Energy.

In a post on his X account in November 2023, which was widely reported in the media, Jinapor lambasted Dr. Bawumia for introducing the Gold for Oil policy, describing it as a “scam.”

“When we cautioned them, Dr. Bawumia’s response was, ‘Gold-for-oil is an initiative the textbooks won’t teach you.’ G4Oil was nothing but a scam! The BoG is now seeking to end it,” Jinapor posted on X, referencing a purported intention by the Bank of Ghana to discontinue the policy, which the Central Bank denied at the time.

However, during his appearance before the Appointments Committee, John Jinapor intriguingly embraced the policy he once dismissed as a scam.

“What we will do is review it, analyze it, and ensure that we develop a model that is fit for purpose and guarantees accountability for the gold,” Jinapor said.

In addition to stabilizing the cedi and fuel prices, Jinapor added that the Gold for Oil policy would also support payments to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and gas suppliers.

To justify his new stance, John Jinapor cited the November 2023 reports alleging an end to the policy, which the Central Bank had denied in a statement at the time.

Meanwhile, many Ghanaians on social media have highlighted the inconsistencies and perceived double standards in the position of the Energy Minister-designate.

Accra, Jan 15, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the recall of Diplomatic and Service Passports issued by the previous Akufo-Addo’s administration.

Dr Callistus Mahama, the Executive Secretary to the President, in a letter addressed to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, made available to the Ghana News Agency, said the exercise aligned with the Government’s commitment to ensuring the proper use and administration of official travel documents by national and international standards.

“The recall aims to prevent misuse, safeguard the country’s reputation and maintain the integrity of our diplomatic engagement.”

It directed the Ministry to take a number of steps to facilitate the process.

These include issuing a public notice – notifying all holders of Diplomatic and Service Passports issued by the previous administration to return these documents to the Ministry for ‘and re-issuance, where applicable.

Set a Deadline for Compliance: Specify a reasonable timeline for all concerned individuals to comply with the recall latest by 24th January, 2025.

Conduct Verification:

Undertake a thorough review of all returned passports to ensure that they align with the current eligibility criteria for Issuance.

“Your cooperation and expedient action in this regard will contribute significantly to maintaining the credibility and efficiency of our country’s passport system,” the statement said.

“Do not hesitate to contact my office for any further clarification or assistance you may need in executing this important exercise.”

Jesus, 27, left the pitch on a stretcher before the end of the first half in Arsenal’s FA Cup tie with Manchester United on Sunday, which Mikel Arteta’s side lost on penalties.

“We know more now. It is not looking good at all. We need to review with one more specialist and will have better information this afternoon,” Arteta told a press conference ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League game with Tottenham Hotspur today.

“I don’t want to confirm anything until we have the final report this afternoon. We were very worried after the game and we are very worried today.”

Jesus had just recently hit goalscoring form, netting his first league goals of the season when scoring a double against Crystal Palace in December, and scored another in a win over Brentford on New Year’s Day.

He also scored a hat-trick against Palace in a League Cup quarter-final game last month. Jesus joined Arsenal in 2022, having won four league titles with Manchester City.

Arsenal may now look to bring in a new striker during the January transfer window, but according to the manager, it is not the only area in which they may need to invest.

“We have other issues as well. A player can bring things to a team in different ways. That is what we are trying to do,” Arteta said.

Rosemond recounted that she suffered a miscarriage after enduring severe physical abuse from her ex-husband.

“I became pregnant twice with my third husband, but because of him, I lost both pregnancies. He pushed me down a staircase during my first pregnancy, and with the second pregnancy, which was twins, I lost them after he attacked me while I was in bed. Before I regained consciousness, I found myself in an ambulance,” she revealed.

When asked why she has struggled to maintain her relationships, the actress stated that she is not the problem and believes that nature has been unkind to her.

She added that all three of her ex-husbands have since asked her to reconcile with them.

“I am not a bad person. My mother used to tell me that if someone doesn’t know me well, they might assume I have a bad character, but that’s not the case. Interestingly, after leaving, they always come back pleading for me to take them back. Currently, my third husband is asking for reconciliation. He even went to my mother to plead, but she didn’t agree,” she explained.

As a single mother, Rosemond shared the struggles she faces while raising her three children.

“What I do is take them to school, then go to work, and make sure to pick them up on time. Sometimes I find someone I trust to look after them, like a neighbor. But when things get tougher, I rely on my mother to help,” she said.

Conversations and discussions about the controversial anti-LGBTQ bill have resurfaced under the newly installed government.

The bill dubbed the ‘Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values’, which was passed by the 8th Parliament, became a significant point of contention during the tenure of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

When the private members’ bill was passed with unanimous approval, many speculated that it might receive assent from then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, despite the controversy surrounding its criminalisation of homosexuality and its harsh provisions.

Things took an unexpected turn when several lawsuits were filed against the bill, leading to a delay in its signing. Eventually, the bill, which became an albatross for the previous government, remained just a bill and was not passed into law before Akufo-Addo left power.

During his campaign, John Dramani Mahama, who was the NDC’s presidential candidate at the time, expressed his disapproval of same-sex marriages and relationships, emphasising his commitment to ensuring that such practices would not be allowed under his government.

What he said during BBC interview

In December 2024, during an interview with the BBC, Mahama stated that a future NDC government would sign the anti-LGBTQ+ bill depending on its contents and specifics.

According to him, although LGBTQ+ activities do not align with the country’s culture, values, and religious beliefs, there must be thorough scrutiny of what the bill proposes and aims to enforce before it is signed into law.

“It is not an anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, but a Family Values Bill. It was approved unanimously by our Parliament. You see, it’s against our culture, I mean African culture, our religious faith – Muslim and Christian and all that. But I think we must look at the bill, and the president must indicate what he finds wrong with the bill and send the bill back to Parliament or alternatively, he must send it to the Council of State and get the Council of State’s advice,” he stated.

Asked by the interviewer if that is what he would have done, Mahama affirmatively said, “That’s what I would have done.”

What he said during meeting with clergy

During a meeting with the clergy in October 2024, John Dramani Mahama gave his assurance to the clergymen, indicating that under his presidency, such practices will not be tolerated.

“My fathers and mothers in Christ, the current legal impasse created by the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration on the Promotion of Proper Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Act, which was passed by Parliament, has set a dangerous precedence for our governance. The constitutional directive for action by the president are quite clear and need not have resulted in this stalemate.

“As I’ve publicly stated, I’m a proud member of the Assemblies of God Church and my faith does not support same-sex marriages or relationships (loud applause for over 20 seconds) nor does it support human-animal relationships, or does it allow people to change their gender as they wish. This is a fundamental belief that I hold and is grounded in my faith. I, therefore, assure you that the promotion of LGBTQ+ and all the pluses will have no place in our schools and communities under my administration,” he said.

However, President Mahama’s recent comments on the controversial topic have attracted attention and sparked widespread concern regarding his shift in position.

What Mahama is saying now

Addressing a delegation of Catholic bishops from the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference during a courtesy call on January 14, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama suggested a government-sponsored LGBTQ+ bill, as opposed to one led by private members.

According to him, making the anti-LGBTQ+ bill a government-sponsored initiative would allow the country’s cultural values to be integrated into various curricula taught to students and would remove the need for a separate bill aimed at enforcing family values in the country.

“I think it should not be a Private Member’s Bill, but a government-sponsored one. If we were teaching our values in schools, we wouldn’t need to pass a bill to enforce our family values, and that is why I think more than even the family values bill, is us agreeing on a curriculum that inculcates these values into our children as they are growing up, so that we don’t need to legislate it.

“I don’t know what the promoters of the bill intend to do, but I think we should have a conversation on it again so that all of us, if we decide to move on the way forward, we move forward with a consensus,” he said.

President Mahama highlighted the challenges encountered by the initial anti-LGBTQ+ bill, including legal and procedural issues.

“But as far as I know, the bill did not get to the president. And so, the convention is that all bills that are not ascended to before the expiration of the life of Parliaments expire. And so, that bill effectively is dead, it has expired,” he stated.

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the security agencies to tighten security around major markets nationwide in the face of recent market fires.

Revealing that he had asked his security heads to draw a plan to enhance security in the markets, President Mahama underscored the urgency of the situation and tasked his security chiefs to act fast.

“We held a meeting with the security heads [on Monday] to discuss how we can tighten security around all major markets to prevent such occurrences,” he stated.

Mahama stated that, “Just this morning, we heard about a fire at the Techiman Market, which indicates that this trend may continue unless we take immediate steps.”

“I’ve asked the security to arrange with the various security services to tighten security around major markets. We are also asking them to explore installing CCTV cameras at all vantage points of every market,” he added.

President Mahama made the disclosure in Accra on Monday when a delegation from the Katamanto market called on him.

The market in days past was razed to the ground by an inferno, rendering thousands who trade in the market facing a life without a source of livelihood. As part of the security measures, the President noted that the Fire Service had been directed to deploy fire tenders to major markets across the country, especially at night.

Market fires, the President emphasized, might not only be a result of faulty electrical installations but also suspected acts of arson.

“These fires take place at night, and that is what gives us room for suspicion that there are people who are deliberately doing this. In the daytime, you don’t hear that there is a fire [outbreak] anywhere. How the fire can decide that it is only at night that it ignites and burns is beyond anybody’s imagination,” he stated.

This suspicion, the President said, was found in a 2013 investigation his then government commissioned into market fires, which established arson.

“I remember it has happened before, in 2013 when I was newly sworn in as president. There were fires in almost every market, which was quite unusual, and in many cases, the investigations showed that people deliberately set the markets on fire in order to cause chaos and confusion,” he said.

He gave assurance of his government’s resolve to assist the affected traders back into business but said the market should be built into a strong facility.

“[The] Government is determined that nobody should be displaced because of this fire…but we must design it better and make sure that we build it in a better way,” the President indicated.

In a notice issued by the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), Professor Gordon A. Awandare, fresh undergraduate students are encouraged to participate in the process by opting into the system after completing their academic registration.

Students seeking accommodation are advised to finalise their academic registration by Friday, January 17, 2025. The deadline to express interest in the random bed allocation system is Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 9 am. The allocation exercise itself will be conducted on the same day at noon.

Transparency and accountability

The University emphasised that the allocation process would be conducted openly to ensure transparency.

Professor Awandare reiterated the institution’s zero-tolerance policy towards illegal practices involving accommodation. “Under no circumstances should any student or parent/guardian pay money to anyone for a bed. This is illegal, and both the buyer and seller will face sanctions according to university regulations,” he warned.

Additionally, the notice stressed that “perching,” or unauthorised residence in campus accommodation, is strictly prohibited. Students found guilty of this practice will face disciplinary actions.
Accommodation challenges

The Pro Vice-Chancellor acknowledged the ongoing challenges with on-campus accommodation but reassured students of efforts to expand residential facilities. He, however, cautioned that accommodation is not guaranteed with admission, urging students who are unsuccessful in securing a place on campus to make alternative arrangements.

The University said it remained committed to providing fair and transparent systems for its students, ensuring equitable access to its resources.

Tyson Fury announces retirement from boxing again

London, Jan 15, (PA Media/dpa/GNA) – Tyson Fury has claimed he has retired from boxing in a video post on social media.

The 36-year-old former world heavyweight champion, lost his second fight with current title holder Oleksandr Usyk last month in Saudi Arabia.

Fury said in a cryptic video message posted on Instagram: “Hi everybody, I’m going to make this short and sweet.

“I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast. I’ve loved every single minute of it and I’m going to end with this: ‘Dick Turpin wore a mask’.

“God bless everybody, see you on the other side.”

Fury had said he had no intention of retiring after a unanimous points defeat to Usyk in December, his second loss to the Ukrainian, who beat the Briton by split decision at the same Riyadh venue the previous May.

Boxing fans had been hoping Fury would finally fight fellow Briton, Anthony Joshua, this year.

Fury, previously announced his intention to quit the sport after he had retained his WBC belt, by stopping Dillian Whyte at Wembley in 2022.

The ‘Gypsy King’ said at the time: “I’ve been in this game 20 years, I’m 34 in a few months.

“I said the third (Deontay) Wilder fight would be my last, but I felt I owed the fans one last homecoming. This is definitely the end of the Gypsy King and I went out with a bang.”

Fury returned to fight Derek Chisora the following December and in October 2023 defeated French MMA fighter Francis Ngannou, the latter bout his last win before facing Usyk.
