I joined your label not to sign my life away

Kofi Jamar is a Ghanaian rapper Kofi Jamar is a Ghanaian rapper

Ghanaian musician, Derrick Osei Kuffour Prempeh, popularly known as Kofi Jamar, has taken to social media to accuse GADone, a record label he is signed to, of neglecting him.

In a series of posts on X on August 1, 2025, Kofi Jamar claimed that GADone Records has sidelined him since last year, even though their contract officially ends in 2025.

According to the musician, he has reached out to the record label numerous times, seeking clarity on his future; however, every effort has proven futile.

“I’m no longer with @GADoneRecords. For those who’ve been asking, our contract ends legally this year, and they stopped reaching out since last year. It’s not fair when you ignore an artiste approaching the end of a contract. At least I need closure. I reached out several times but to no avail,” he said.

Kofi Jamar, in his post, claimed he had fulfilled all demands stated in his contract with the record label, adding that he signed to the label to advance his career and not to throw his life away.

According to him, he would appreciate it if both parties settle the matter amicably.

“I never signed my life away. I fulfilled and did everything that was required of me. I would appreciate it if we could sit down and talk about the remainder of the contract and part ways peacefully. But not hearing anything from the label’s end over a year is cruel,” he added.

That is the reality for many passport holders whose travel documents unlock doors around the world, thanks to their strength and global credibility.

But even within Africa, many citizens face roadblocks when attempting to cross borders.

Security Analyst questions timing, political motives behind McDan demolition and Wontumi invitation

0

Security analyst Prof. Kwesi Aning has raised concerns about the timing and perceived political undertones of recent actions by Ghana’s security agencies—particularly the demolition of the McDan warehouse and the invitation of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Appearing on Channel One TV, on Saturday, August 2, Prof. Aning called for a critical national discussion on how and when security institutions act on intelligence and enforce decisions.

He pointed to the July 30 demolition of the McDan warehouse along the Spintex Road as an example, questioning both the timing and the legal grounds for the exercise.

“When do statutory security agencies get access to critical information upon which they act, and how should those operations be undertaken? One example is the demolition of this particular structure. When did it become law that that structure ought to be demolished? Has the fact just come out, or has the fact always been there but was politicised?” he asked.

He also cited the National Security’s recent invitation of Chairman Wontumi, suggesting both incidents point to larger issues of governance and consistency.

“The second is the invitation of Chairman Wontumi. When did it become clear that some of the activities by his company had flouted national rules? I am raising these two examples to broaden the conversation about timing, performance, and political control,” he said.

Prof. Aning warned that selective enforcement of laws could erode public trust in national institutions, noting that decisions such as demolitions must follow due process and not appear politically driven.

“When did National Security, or the council, decide that there was a need for a National Security Council-approved operation to demolish a structure? Have the facts always been known to other statutory institutions that ought to have given the permit—or ought not to have given the permit—for that structure to be there?” he questioned.

He concluded by calling for a national conversation around institutional transparency and the need for fair, consistent enforcement.

“This is about institutional capacity and, more importantly, the trust that citizens have in the statutory institutions,” he stated.

Act, don’t just talk, on Journalist attacks

0

The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to take concrete action to address the recent spate of assaults on journalists in the country, rather than relying solely on statements and promises.

His comments follow a series of attacks on media personnel, including the assault of a GHOne TV reporter during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on July 17, and the reported beating of JoyNews reporter Carlos Calony, his cameraman, and an eyewitness by alleged armed military officers during a demolition exercise at Spintex on July 30.

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has since warned of a possible nationwide media blackout on police activities if urgent steps are not taken to protect journalists and uphold press freedom.

President Mahama condemned the assault on the JoyNews journalist, reaffirming his commitment to press freedom and directing security agencies to ensure those responsible are punished.

However, speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, August 2, Ahiagbah said the President’s response was insufficient and urged him to ensure that perpetrators face real consequences.

“It’s troubling, we should condemn it in no uncertain terms, that act is unacceptable. President Mahama talking about it is not the solution. What we’re looking for is to stop that environment, give full effect to Article 21, the freedom, speech of citizens, including the media, is guaranteed. We are just asking for what the Constitution has provided.

He added, “President Mahama’s take on the matter is not conclusive. What will be conclusive is that the individuals who have abused citizens’ rights are guaranteed, whether journalists or eyewitnesses. What are the consequences? It is not words, it is action.”

Ahiagbah also referenced previous instances of press assaults under President Mahama’s administration, suggesting that the pattern was worrying and demanded more than rhetoric.

Condemnations not enough, sanction Journalist attackers

0

Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Dr. John Osae-Kwapong, has emphasised the importance of accountability in the wake of a recent surge in assaults on journalists in the line of duty.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, August 2, Dr. Osae-Kwapong said while government condemnation and public dialogue are crucial, concrete punitive actions against perpetrators would serve as a stronger deterrent and help restore public trust.

“The dialogue is important, the same as the immediate response from the president,” he stated. “But I strongly believe that ultimately holding those persons accountable for their actions with punishment will also go a long way to serve as a deterrent to others who may want to do the same. But also, it will assure Ghanaians that this is not the government environment that media persons or ordinary citizens are going to be living in.”

His comments come in the wake of a troubling string of attacks on media practitioners.

On July 30, Joy News reporter Carlos Calony was detained by National Security operatives while covering the aftermath of the demolition of a warehouse under construction.

Eyewitnesses also alleged that a soldier physically assaulted a civilian who attempted to film the arrest. The specific reasons for Calony’s arrest remain unclear, prompting outrage from press freedom advocates and civil society organisations.

In another incident during the rerun of elections at 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North constituency, GHOne TV journalist Agyekum Banahene was reportedly harassed while covering proceedings at the Church of Pentecost, North Odorkor Polling 2 Station.

Both President John Dramani Mahama and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have publicly condemned the incidents, affirming their commitment to protecting press freedom and upholding the rule of law.

Despite these assurances, Dr. Osae-Kwapong emphasised that, beyond public statements, visible and decisive disciplinary action is needed to prevent future violations and to reinforce Ghana’s democratic credentials.

UDS student gets life sentence – In murder over love affair

0

The High Court in Tamale has sentenced a Computer Science student of the University for Development Studies (UDS), Salifu Nurudeen, to life imprisonment for the murder of a fellow student.

The court, presided over by Justice Charles Kwesi Acheampong, convicted Nurudeen, alias Salifu Nko-nya, last Thursday after finding him guilty of the murder of Wumpini Mohammed Zakiu, a Pharmacy student of the same university.

The incident, which occurred on September 25, 2024, stemmed from a dispute over a romantic relationship.

The fellow female student, also of UDS, was said to have ended her relationship with Nurudeen and moved on to a new affair with Zakiu.

A supposedly jealous Nurudeen stabbed Zakiu multiple times, resulting in his death.

The tragic incident sent shockwaves across the UDS community.

Jealousy turns deadly

The facts as presented in court were that on September 25, 2024, Zakiu’s body was discovered with multiple stab wounds in an uncompleted building at the university, with his mobile phone missing.

The deceased, Wumpini Mohammed Zakiu

The deceased, Wumpini Mohammed Zakiu

Nurudeen’s actions, the court heard, were fuelled by jealousy after his former girlfriend ended their relationship and began dating her new friend.

Nurudeen, in a calculated scheme, created a fake snapchat account using the identity of a non-existent female admirer to lure Zakiu to an uncompleted building, and brutally attacked and stabbed him multiple times.

The prosecution, led by state attorneys, presented compelling evidence, including CCTV footage from a nearby installation, which captured Zakiu being chased into the building.

In an attempt to mislead investigators and frame his ex-girlfriend, Nurudeen was said to have removed the SIM card from Zakiu’s mobile phone, inserted it into his own device, and began impersonating the deceased.

He sent messages to the girl, pretending to break up with her, and then sent a text message to one of Zakiu’s close friends, saying, “Charley I go find trouble o, dem go kill me”.

The deception, however, could not succeed as investigators from the police cybercrime unit traced the phone’s location to Nurudeen’s residence in Nyankpala.

Search

A search of Nurudeen’s room led to the recovery of  Zakiu’s phone hidden under Nurudeen’s bed.

Subsequent forensic and digital evidence tied him directly to the crime.

Subsequently, Nurudeen was arrested at the Tamale Jubilee Park after being lured by the police through coordinated efforts.

Despite overwhelming evidence, he consistently denied committing the murder throughout the trial.

Throughout the proceedings and even as the verdict was delivered, the convict reportedly showed no visible emotion.

On Thursday, July 31, 2025, a seven-member jury returned a guilty verdict by a margin of 6 to 1, leading to the life sentence.

Entrepreneurs are the lifeblood of Ghana’s progress – Julius Debrah

0

The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has lauded Ghanaian entrepreneurs for their resilience and critical role in driving national development.

His remarks were delivered on his behalf by Mr Alvis Afriyie Ankrah during the 15th Anniversary Awards and Dinner Gala of the Ghana Entrepreneurs Foundation on Friday, 1st August 2025.

Addressing the business leaders and innovators as the guest of honour, Mr Debrah praised the country’s entrepreneurial class for their fortitude amid economic headwinds, including high inflation, currency depreciation, global supply chain disruptions, and domestic policy challenges.

“It is entrepreneurs like those gathered here who keep our economy moving, who provide jobs, who invest in innovation, who pay taxes, and who represent Ghana on the global business stage. The Ghanaian entrepreneur has weathered storms—from high inflation and currency depreciation to global supply chain disruptions and domestic policy constraints. And yet, you endured. You improvised. You created. And you prevailed.”

On behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and the Government of Ghana, the Chief of Staff extended heartfelt congratulations to the award recipients, describing the celebration as a testament to the enduring spirit of Ghanaian enterprise.

“On behalf of the President and Government of Ghana, I salute your indomitable spirit. This celebration is not merely ceremonial—it is deeply symbolic. It tells every young Ghanaian that entrepreneurship is not just an option, it is a powerful tool for national transformation.”

He highlighted the significance of the Legacy Lifetime Achievement Awards and the Top 25 Most Influential Entrepreneurs of All Time, stating that they reflect success not measured by momentary gain, but by long-term impact, the transformation of entire industries, and legacies that transcend individuals.

The Chief of Staff concluded with a reflection on the broader trajectory of Ghana’s development, reiterating the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for enterprise under the presidency of President John Dramani Mahama.

“This occasion also gives me the opportunity to reflect on how far we have come as a nation and where we’re headed under the visionary leadership of President John Dramani Mahama.”

Mintah Akandoh pays surprise visit to Achimota District Hospital, urges reduction in long waiting hours

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has paid an unannounced visit to the Achimota District Hospital to assess the quality-of-service delivery and listen to concerns from patients and staff.

The visit, which was captured in a video circulating on X, showed Mintah Akandoh interacting with patients at the outpatient department.

Many of them raised concerns about excessive wait times, overcrowding, and delays in receiving medical attention.

Akandoh expressed disappointment over the conditions he witnessed and described the long queues and patient frustration as unacceptable.

He called on the hospital management to urgently adopt measures to improve patient flow and reduce delays in care delivery.

“No patient should be spending four to five hours waiting to see a doctor. This points to inefficiencies that must be addressed immediately. Timely access to healthcare is a basic right, and public facilities must ensure this is upheld”, he said.

The hospital’s administrators acknowledged the challenges and attributed the delays to limited staff and a growing number of patients.

They assured him that efforts were underway to streamline operations and enhance service delivery.

Akandoh, who has been advocating for reforms in the public health sector, said he would continue to undertake similar visits to ensure accountability and advocate for better resourcing of district hospitals across the country.

Ricketts-Hagan describes NPP’s Gold-for-Oil programme as unthinkable economic move

0

The Gold-for-Oil programme was launched in 2023 by the Akufo-Addo government play videoThe Gold-for-Oil programme was launched in 2023 by the Akufo-Addo government

Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South, Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, has questioned the rationale behind the Gold-for-Oil programme initiated by the Akufo-Addo government.

Describing the programme as an “unthinkable policy,” he criticised the approach of barter trading Ghana’s gold for oil in today’s global economic system.

He argued that the policy defies modern economic logic, noting that both gold and oil are commodities traded openly on international markets with standardized pricing.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, the Cape Coast MP said; “The oil for gold, or gold for oil, whatever you call it, that you were doing, which turned out to be one of the unbelievable, unthinkable policies that can ever be implemented in this modern age. We have a world market for gold. We have a world market for oil and you are sitting in some little corner, you are doing a barter trade of oil and gold. How? And you said it’s an economic policy.”

“Gold has a world market price. If anybody wants to buy gold, they go to the market. Oil has a market price. If anybody wants to buy oil, they go to the market. Why would you call somebody in Dubai and do a barter trade in this day and age? I mean, did you set up your own price in that barter trade?” he quizzed.

Ricketts-Hagan further asked that; “Did you have a different price for gold and a different price for oil than what is being given in the world market? What was in for you? And what was in for the other person? Nobody in their right senses will sell oil to you at a price lower than the market and then you may want to sell gold to other people below the world market. It is not surprising.”

According to him, the programme resulted in a staggering loss of $2.4 billion, citing a lack of transparency in pricing, supplier identity, and transaction structure.

“We don’t know who was supplying the oil. We don’t know the price. The government itself didn’t know,” he said.

The Gold-for-Oil policy was a strategic programme launched by the Akufo-Addo government in 2023.

It aimed to utilise the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase (DGP) programme to support the importation of petroleum products into the country.

The initiative was designed to free up foreign exchange resources and reduce pressure on the central bank’s foreign reserves and the banking sector.

It also sought to procure petroleum products at competitive prices through government-to-government arrangements.

The BoG purchases all gold produced and exported by companies with licensed small-scale concessions, including community mines.

This gold is then used to pay for oil supplies to Ghana, either through barter trade or via a broker channel.

However, the programme’s execution quickly drew scrutiny.

According to the Bank of Ghana, the country recorded some loses of GH¢2.14 billion from the programme, GH¢320 million in 2023 and GH¢1.82 billion in 2024.

The central bank attributed it to exchange rate differentials and petroleum stockpiling.

‘President Mahama struggling to create jobs; cowards targeting McDan’ – Titus Glover

0

Former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Titus Glover

Former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Titus Glover, has condemned what he describes as politically motivated efforts to undermine Ghanaian entrepreneur Daniel McKorley, popularly known as McDan.

Reacting to the recent demolition of a warehouse linked to McDan, Glover lashed out at those behind the move, calling them “cowards.”

According to him, President Mahama is grappling with the challenge of job creation for the country’s growing unemployed youth.

He argued that private individuals who are taking the initiative to create employment and support national development should be encouraged and not targeted for political reasons.

“If someone is using his personal resources to employ hundreds, support sports like football and boxing, and train young people in entrepreneurial skills through educational initiatives, why should politics be used to sabotage such efforts? They are cowards,” Glover stated.

He praised McDan’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives across sports, education, and entrepreneurship and urged the public to recognise the impact of such private contributions toward solving Ghana’s employment crisis.

The warehouse, owned by the Executive Chairman of the McDan Group, was demolished late Monday night by operatives believed to be from national security.

The structure, situated along the Spintex Road near Action Chapel, was reportedly torn down around 7:00 p.m.

Sources suggest the demolition stems from an ongoing legal dispute between the McDan Group and the Ghana Airport Company over ownership of the land.

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) in a press release on July 30, 2025 announced that it has regained control of over 16 acres of prime airport land following a ruling by the Accra High Court in its favour against subsidiaries of the McDan Group.

The court’s judgment granted GACL full re-entry and possession of two parcels of land, measuring approximately 10.63 acres and 5.66 acres, located near Kotoka International Airport, adjacent to and opposite Action Chapel International.

The lands were leased to McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited, both subsidiaries of the McDan Group, since 2012.

National Security Coordinator condemns operatives’ misconduct, unveils new strategy

0

The National Security Coordinator, DCOP Osman Abdul-Razak, has strongly condemned the conduct of some operatives under his command, describing their actions as “very disgraceful” and damaging to the reputation of the National Security Secretariat.

Speaking at a high-level engagement with members of the National House of Chiefs on Friday, August 1, DCOP Abdul-Razak expressed deep concern over the behaviour of certain personnel who have been caught engaging in unprofessional and unauthorised activities.

“It is very disgraceful the way sometimes our boys are found behaving in strange ways,” he stated, lamenting how such actions undermine the Secretariat’s integrity.

In response, the Coordinator revealed that the Secretariat has adopted a new operational strategy aimed at addressing these issues and realigning its role within the national security framework.

Under the new approach, National Security operatives will no longer be deployed directly on the ground unless necessary. Instead, traditional security agencies such as the police, immigration, and prison service will take the lead in operations.

“We have changed our modus operandi,” he announced. “The National Security will now allow the various security agencies to operate directly on the ground and will only intervene when challenges arise.”

DCOP Abdul-Razak explained that this change is part of the government’s broader “reset agenda,” which seeks to enhance professionalism, coordination, and efficiency across the country’s security architecture.

“Previously, you would find National Security involved in operations meant for other security agencies. That is wrong,” he noted.

“National Security, as it is properly known, should coordinate, not take over. We are at the top of the security architecture and should act as such.”

He said the new policy will help sanitise operations, reduce friction between agencies, and ensure that the National Security Secretariat functions as a strategic coordinating body rather than a frontline operational unit.

Trump moves nuclear submarines after Russian ex-president’s comments

0

Aug 2 (BBC/GNA) – US President Donald Trump says he has ordered two nuclear submarines to “be positioned in the appropriate regions” in response to “highly provocative” comments by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

Trump said he acted “just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that. Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances”.

He did not say where the two submarines were being deployed, in keeping with US military protocol.

Medvedev has recently threatened the US in response to Trump’s ultimatums to Moscow to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine or face tough sanctions.

Russia and the US possess the most nuclear arms in the world, and both countries have a fleet of nuclear submarines.

Unthinkable policy! – Ricketts-Hagan criticises NPP’s Gold-for-Oil programme

Kweku Ricketts-Hagan is the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South play videoKweku Ricketts-Hagan is the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South

Mahama petitioned to suspend GACL MD over ‘looming’ OSP probe

0

Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare the Managing Director of GACL Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare the Managing Director of GACL

A formal petition has been submitted to President John Dramani Mahama, calling for Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, the Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), to stand down pending investigations by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) into a controversial revenue audit contract between GACL and Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML).

The petition, written by Gyesi Boako, a Ghanaian citizen and marketing expert and dated August 1, 2025, was addressed to the President at the Jubilee House.

The petition raised serious concerns about possible corruption and procurement breaches tied to the contract, which was reportedly signed by Opare on behalf of the airport authority.

“I, Gyesi Boako, respectfully petition for the immediate stepping aside of Mrs Yvonne Nana Opare, Managing Director of Ghana Airport Company Limited, from office pending the ongoing investigations by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) into the SML revenue audit contract,” portions of the petition states.

The OSP is currently probing a number of public sector contracts awarded to SML, a private auditing and monitoring firm that has, in recent months, come under public scrutiny following revelations about the value and procurement processes behind its agreements with state institutions.

Boako insists that the integrity of the investigation must be protected, and hence Opare’s continued stay in office could risk interference or conflict of interest.

“In the interest of transparency, good governance and accountability in the management of public institutions like airports, it is crucial to ensure that the investigation is not hindered or influenced in any way,” he emphasised.

While acknowledging that Opare is presumed innocent under the Constitution, the petitioner argued that temporarily vacating her position would reflect good faith.

“Stepping aside would demonstrate a commitment to transparency and cooperation with the investigating authorities,” Boako wrote.

The petition outlines several reasons supporting this request, including the need to ensure an uninterrupted and thorough investigation, prevent potential conflicts of interest, demonstrate a commitment to accountability, and maintain public trust in the airport’s leadership and the OSP’s process.

“If this request is granted, it would demonstrate a commitment to accountability and transparency in the management of public institutions,” Boako added, urging the President to act swiftly on what he described as a “critical issue.”

Achraf Hakimi to face French prosecutors over alleged rape case

Moroccan international, Achraf Hakimi to French prosecutors over alleged rape case Moroccan international, Achraf Hakimi to French prosecutors over alleged rape case

Moroccan international Achraf Hakimi is set to face trial for allegedly raping a woman.

According to reports by AFP sighted by GhanaWeb, French prosecutors on Friday, August 1, 2025, requested that the presiding judge refer the rape charge to a criminal court.

“It is now up to the investigating magistrate to make a decision within the framework of his order,” the prosecutor’s office told AFP in a statement.

It is alleged that the Moroccan international had paid for his accuser to travel to his home on February 25, 2023, in the Paris suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt while his wife and children were away on holiday.

Per reports, the woman went to a police station following the encounter, alleging that she was raped by the PSG player when questioned by police.

Although the woman refused to make a formal accusation, prosecutors decided to press charges against the player.

She told police at the time that she had met Hakimi in January 2023 on Instagram.

After charges were pressed against the Moroccan international, Hakimi’s lawyer, Fanny Colin, has described the call by prosecutors as “incomprehensible and senseless”, adding her client is calm and ready to face trial.

“We, along with Achraf Hakimi, remain as calm as we were at the start of the proceedings. If these requisitions were to be followed, we would obviously pursue all avenues of appeal,” she said.

Meanwhile, counsel for the accuser, Rachel-Flore Pardo, in an interview with AFP, noted, “My client welcomes this news with immense relief.”

Hakimi, born in Madrid, played a pivotal role in PSG’s first Champions League title, with the full-back scoring the opener in the 5-0 rout of Inter Milan in the final in May.

Prof. Kwesi Aning questions timing, motives behind Security actions

0

Security Analyst Prof. Kwesi Aning has expressed concern over the timing and possible political undertones of recent operations by Ghana’s security agencies, particularly the demolition of the McDan warehouse and the invitation of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, August 2, Prof. Aning urged the public and policymakers to critically examine how and when security agencies act on intelligence and implement national decisions.

Citing the demolition of the McDan warehouse on Spintex Road on July 30, 2025, he questioned the timing and legal justification of the exercise.

“When do statutory security agencies get access to critical information upon which they act, and how should those operations be undertaken? One example is the demolition of this particular structure. When did it become law that that structure ought to be demolished? Has the fact just come out, or has the fact always been there but was politicised?” he asked.

Prof. Aning also referenced the recent invitation of Chairman Wontumi by National Security, linking both events to broader governance concerns.

“The second is the invitation of Chairman Wontumi. When did it become clear that some of the activities by his company had flouted national rules? I am raising these two examples to broaden the conversation about timing performance and political control,” he explained.

He argued that these developments reflect deeper issues surrounding decision-making at the highest levels of national security and warned that selective enforcement risks eroding public trust.

“When did National Security, or the council, decide that there was a need for a National Security Council-approved operation to demolish a structure? Have the facts always been known to other statutory institutions that ought to have given the permit, or ought not to have given the permit for that structure to be there?”

Prof. Aning concluded by calling for a national dialogue on institutional capacity and transparency, stressing that effective governance requires consistent application of the law and the confidence of the citizenry.

“So while we talk about the excerpts, we also need to broaden the conversation because this is about institutional capacity and more importantly, the trust that citizens have in the statutory institutions,” he stated.

An attack on journalists is an attack on government – Ejisu MP

0

The Member of Parliament for Ejisu, Kwabena Boateng, has also condemned the recent assault on a JoyNews journalist and his interviewee by a military officer, describing it as an attack on one of the pillars of democratic governance.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme, Mr Boateng underscored the constitutional role of the media as the fourth estate of the realm, arguing that any assault on a journalist should be treated with the same gravity as an attack on any other arm of government.

“This democracy that we are practicing, without the media, I don’t know what we are doing with democracy, if we sit in parliament and pass all the laws, the oversight, the Executive also does all that they have to do, and there is no what we have described as the fourth estate of the realm to take it out there to break it down for the consumption of the general public, then our democracy hasn’t come to where we expect it to be.”

“So an assault on a journalist is like an assault on any arm of government, which shouldn’t be taken lightly,” he stressed.

The MP warned that if the country allows such assaults to go unchecked, it undermines democratic credentials both locally and on the global stage.

“Anybody observing internationally and sees that journalists have been beaten in a jurisdiction, obviously, what it means is that you are not serious about your democracy,” he said.

Unthinkable Policy! – Ricketts-Hagan criticises NPP’s Gold-for-Oil programme

0

Kweku Ricketts-Hagan is the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South Kweku Ricketts-Hagan is the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South

Ghana Among African Nations Most Exposed to Gold Price Volatility

0

Gold N
Gold

Ghana, Tanzania, and Uganda face heightened vulnerability to foreign exchange reserve instability if gold prices decline sharply, according to a new Fitch Solutions’ BMI analysis.

These countries rely heavily on bullion for export revenue 45%, 42%, and 35% respectively leaving their currencies exposed to commodity market fluctuations.

BMI Senior Analyst Orson Gard warned a gold slump could deflate reserve values, reduce foreign currency inflows, and strain non-gold reserves, particularly affecting external solvency.

The risk compounds existing liquidity challenges, as African central banks may struggle to convert gold into liquid assets like foreign exchange during crises.

While BMI maintains a 2025 base gold price forecast of $3,100 per ounce, Senior Commodities Analyst Olga Savina noted the metal’s recent rally has likely peaked despite prices surging 26% this year to $3,298.54. Central bank purchases, driven by efforts to diversify from U.S. assets amid global trade tensions, contributed to the rise.

The World Gold Council confirms continued central bank buying plans over the next year, involving Burkina Faso, South Africa, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Kenya. Gard emphasized that gold-dependent economies require strategic buffers to mitigate price shocks, noting: “Reliance on export receipts for solvency intensifies these risks.”

‘Name a school after him, not a statue’

Daddy Lumba is a late Ghanaian Highlife musician play videoDaddy Lumba is a late Ghanaian Highlife musician

Mama Acheampong, the music teacher of late Ghanaian Highlife legend, Daddy Lumba, has shared her profound memories of the singer.

In an interview with GhanaWeb’s Isaac Dadzie on July 31, 2025, Mama Acheampong shared how talented the late musician was, adding that Lumba was brilliant and equally multitalented.

“He had a sharp voice and could make music on the spot. So I took him as the choir prefect, and through him, the queen mother of Juaben bought the first choir robes the school had.

“He formed the Lumba Brothers and later added Theresah Abebrese. He was a good singer and songwriter. Charles was so respectful and intelligent… And children loved him,” she said.

Mama Acheampong also shared her thoughts on the ongoing discussion on whether a statue should be built in the name of the late musician.

According to her, constructing a sculpture is thoughtful; however, Ghanaians have a poor maintenance culture, therefore, a school or road should be named after the “Makro Mo” singer.

“What I would love is for the government to give him a state burial because he deserves that. Apart from that, when statues are made in Ghana, we don’t take good care of them. But if we can name a school or something after him, it would be the best… Something we can see, and it would be there always. I don’t like statues,” she said.

The teacher also shared that “Ankwanoma” is her favourite song from the late Daddy Lumba, while recounting how she performed with the track with him on the same stage.

“During the first legends night, we did it for him. I came up on stage without his knowledge. It was a surprise, so when they asked me to say something about him, I did that and after, I just sang the song. He got hold of the mic and completed it for me. He knew this was the song I love,” she added.

The ‘sin’ committed against Asantehene by some Agona royals, descendants of Okomfo Anokye

0

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is the ruler of Asanteman Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is the ruler of Asanteman

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, bared his teeth at some royals of Agona who came to beg for his forgiveness at the Asanteman Council meeting on Monday, July 28, 2025.

According to a report by opemsuo.com, the Asantehene described the royals as “ingrates” as he narrated events that transpired, which led to their uncle slapping him with a lawsuit.

The King of Asanteman indicated that the issue stemmed from a dispute over the royalty of the then-reigning queen of Agona.

He said that the then-chief of Agona, Nana Kwame Boakye, ceded the stool of the queen mother of Agona to the sister of one Senkyire, who had shown him some kindness.

When Nana Kwame Boakye died, the queen mother wanted to choose his successor, but this was opposed by some who challenged her legitimacy.

The matter was taken to court by one Yaw Marfo, known as Lawyer Adusei of the royal family, who sued the queen mother.

By that time, the Asantehene indicated, he had just been enthroned, and he asked all the parties to take the matter out of court.

“When I ascended the Golden Stool, I ordered that they take the case out of court, which both parties complied with,” Otumfuo said.

The Asanteman Traditional Council investigated the matter and found that the queen was not a royal.

The Asantehene said that he then decided to reward Yaw Marfo by making him the chief of Agona, but he (Marfo) declined, citing health concerns.

He said that Marfo instead presented one Kwame Darkwa, whom Berko, the candidate of Aunty Christy, challenged.

“Then I told him, ‘I only wanted to honour you, but if you can’t ascend, go back and do the needful’. At the time, one Aunty Christy was pushing for Berko to ascend the stool, which resulted in discord. I called them back and gave the kingmakers the chance to choose their preferred candidate. Four opted for Berko and three went in for Darkwa.”

Following the majority of the kingmakers, the Asante then ordered that Berko be enstooled.

A royal of Agona, who lived in London, wanted Darkwa to become the paramount chief of Agona and sued the Asantehene and Asanteman to get the court to reverse the order.

“I sent him a message and warned him about the repercussions of his actions. I told him that, of all people, the descendants of Komfo Anokye are the least I expected this from. You are all aware of how he ended up,” the Asantehene said.

To make matters worse, the royals reportedly seized the Amoampong deity, which the Asantehene characterised as a property of Asanteman, and kept it out of the reach of the enstooled chief.

GMet calls for collective action on marine safety

0

Fishermen pulling back their net after making a catch Fishermen pulling back their net after making a catch

The Deputy Director-General of Operations at the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), Dr Ignatius Kweku Williams, has appealed to all stakeholders within Ghana’s fishing and maritime sectors to take marine weather warnings seriously and collaborate closely with GMet to enhance safety at sea.

Speaking at the opening of a marine forecasting stakeholder engagement held at the University of Cape Coast, Dr Williams emphasized that the effectiveness of marine forecasts hinges not only on GMet’s delivery but also on the readiness of end users, especially fishers and boat operators to act on the information provided.

The Cape Coast workshop was part of GMet’s ongoing Marine Weather Forecasting engagement, aimed at deepening understanding of how marine weather information is received, interpreted, and applied in Ghana’s coastal communities.

Following a similar engagement held earlier in Keta, the Cape Coast session brought together stakeholders and representatives from Elmina, Winneba, Anomabo, Moree, and Cape Coast.

As in previous workshops, participants were presented with detailed case studies of real-life marine accidents — such as the Atikagome disaster on Volta Lake, vessel sinkings in Ada, and the Azizanya–Azizakpe capsize – to provoke reflection on the consequences of ignoring weather forecasts.

Experienced Ghanaian tactician Mas-Ud Didi Dramani says he was inspired to take over Hearts of Oak coaching job because the leadership of the club were ready for a purposeful change.

The former Black Stars assistant coach recently joined the Ghanaian giants, replacing Ivorian gaffer Aboubakar Ouattara at the end of the 2024/25 football campaign.

The former Asante Kotoko and Black Maidens coach penned a two-year contract, keeping him at the club until 2027.

Explaining why he accepted Hearts of Oak’s coaching job, Didi Dramani said, “I’m a professional, devoid of my passion and soft touch. I like to see things done in a right way. I had a thorough discussion with the club as to why they wanted me and I realized they were ready for a purposeful change”

The Phobians enjoyed a fairly good campaign during the 2024/25 Ghanaian football season. Despite missing out on a trophy, the team’s top-four finish in the Ghana Premier League was an improvement from the previous campaign, where the team almost suffered relegation.

After the improvement, Hearts of Oak are now aiming to win the Ghana Premier League in the 2025/26 season under the new coach.

The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League will kick off on the weekend of September 12.

2 times disputes led to fatal stabbings of SHS students in Accra

Two SHS students have lost their lives to fatal stabbing under 12 months Two SHS students have lost their lives to fatal stabbing under 12 months

In just under 12 months, two senior high school students in Accra have lost their lives to fatal stabbing, raising concerns about safety lapses in students’ safety as well as supervision.

The first tragedy occurred on September 2, 2024, at the O’Reilly Senior High School.

Edward Borketey Sackey, a final-year student, was allegedly fatally stabbed by his classmate, Godwin, following a heated argument over whose father was wealthier.

The incident unfolded shortly after students had completed an examination

Edward was stabbed three times in the chest and died at LEKMA Hospital despite efforts to save him.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) immediately launched an investigation, and the suspect was arrested and placed in police custody.

The incident stirred debate over moral discipline and the growing intensity of interpersonal conflicts among students.

The second incident occurred on July 31, 2025. Addib Alhassan, a 15-year-old first-year student, was stabbed during a classroom altercation.

He was rushed to the Adabraka Polyclinic and later transferred to Ridge Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The news triggered immediate unrest on campus.

Angry youth stormed the school grounds, demanding justice and accountability.

The Member of Parliament for the Klottey Korle, Dr Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings, visited the school and condemned the violence.

She urged a comprehensive review of safety and disciplinary structures within schools.

Though occurring in different settings, both cases share distressing similarities of young students fatally harmed during school hours by peers, driven by impulsive disputes.

In each case, school authorities and the police were forced to respond swiftly, but only after irreversible loss.

These two-timed tragedies expose the fragility of discipline and safety in many of the senior high schools across the country.

They also raise concerns over the psychological and emotional well-being of students in an era of growing school enrollment, peer pressure, and the limitations of overburdened guidance systems.

Adom-Otchere reunites with family after OSP release

0

The former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, Paul Adom-Otchere, received a warm welcome from his family following his release from the custody of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on Friday, August 1, 2025.

Mr. Adom-Otchere was released in the company of former Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, and his legal team.

In a video shared on social media, Mr. Adom-Otchere was seen reuniting with his family at their residence, embracing his children and loved ones before being served refreshments.

His wife, visibly relieved, recounted how individuals and institutions, including former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, reached out to offer support.

“If not for this incident, I would not have known how many people had my number. Calls came in constantly. Nana Addo and Dr. Bawumia called and expressed concern,” Rosemary Beryl-Archer Otchere said.

She also shared that a police officer had commended her strength throughout the ordeal.

Mr. Adom-Otchere described his experience at the OSP, noting that although he had initial concerns, the holding facility was not as dire as portrayed in public accounts.

He expressed appreciation for legal counsel received, including advice from private legal practitioner Thaddeus Sory to attend the OSP with Godfred Dame.

He also disclosed that Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin advised him to remain calm during the process, though he admitted it was difficult given the OSP’s stance.

Mr. Adom-Otchere stated he would not discuss details of his experience at the OSP on his television programe.

His release comes after the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) approved revised bail conditions for Paul Adom-Otchere, the former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), following negotiations with his legal counsel.

In a statement released on Friday, August 1, the OSP confirmed that the revised terms meet the objectives of the original bail conditions and have been secured by the Jospong Group of Companies, acting as surety.

Adom-Otchere was recently charged by the OSP in connection with a revenue assurance contract between GACL and a private firm, allegedly awarded without full board approval. He was initially detained after failing to meet bail requirements, citing his lack of ownership of landed property in Ghana.

In a statement issued on Friday, August 1, 2025, the company explained that the recall follows a directive from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), issued in collaboration with National Security, after the regulator received alerts of bloating in some units of the product.

“Our attention has been drawn by the FDA and National Security to some incidents of bloating in Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix pouches and cans (210g and 400g),” the company said. “We have therefore been directed by the regulator to issue this recall, whilst we investigate the root cause of the problem.”
