Sam George backs DKB over data depletion complaints

The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has backed popular comedian DKB over complaints on social media about fast-depleting data packages by networks.

DKB had previously expressed concerns over his data bundle depleting faster than expected. After his complaint triggered an NCA investigation, DKB later issued an apology and admitted that hidden app usage had caused the rapid data loss.

However, the comedian was dragged on social media, with many accusing him of being partisan.

But sharing his thoughts on this issue, Sam George, speaking at the Government Accountability Series on August 1, 2025, credited user behaviour as the real driver behind the complaints.

“Every single one of the complaints that have been referred to the team has been investigated. And all of them have proven that it is user settings and user behaviours that have affected the use of their data and that there has been no price tampering,” he said.

He further recounted cases where users, including DKB had reported rapid data depletion.

“When we did the investigation, they realised that the person used it to watch and stream videos. And that’s why the data he was expecting to keep was depleted.

“I’m sure you all saw the one by DKB when he complained about his data, and subsequently he realised that it was from his own user behaviour,” he said.

Sam George further stated that his outfit will take action against any cases of malpractice by any telecommunications company.

“Let me reiterate, I will not hesitate to deal decisively as minister with any telecom company that faults or alters the pricing that is approved by the NCA.

“But unless there is evidence of the same, you cannot punish somebody just because people are making a claim that is not backed by evidence,” he said.

French prosecutors seek rape trial for PSG football star Achraf Hakimi

French prosecutors on Friday called for Moroccan international Achraf Hakimi to face trial for the alleged rape of a woman in 2023, which the Paris Saint-Germain player denies.

The Nanterre prosecutor’s office told AFP that they had requested that the investigating judge refer the rape charge to a criminal court.

“It is now up to the investigating magistrate to make a decision within the framework of his order,” the prosecutor’s office told AFP in a statement.

Hakimi, 26,  played a major role in PSG’s run to their first Champions League title, the full-back scoring the opener in the 5-0 rout of Inter Milan in the final in May.

Hakimi, who helped Morocco to their historic charge to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, was charged in March, 2023 with raping a 24-year-old woman.

Hakimi allegedly paid for his accuser to travel to his home on February 25, 2023, in the Paris suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt while his wife and children were away on holiday.

He denies the accusations.

In Qatar, Hakimi was a cornerstone of the Morocco team that became the first African or Arab nation to reach the semi-finals of a World Cup.

NRSA mourns 16 lives lost in Atwedie-Asankare horror crash

0

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has extended its deepest condolences following a horrific road traffic crash that claimed the lives of 16 people on Monday, July 28, 2025.

The tragic incident, which also left several others severely injured, occurred on the perilous Atwedie-Asankare stretch of the N6 Highway in the Asante-Akim District of the Ashanti Region.

The fatal collision involved a Ford Transit Bus with registration number GT 4674-22 and a DAF XF articulated tanker truck bearing registration number GT 1674-17.

The Obogu community held a mass burial ceremony for the 16 young members of the Saviour Church Youth Ministry who died in the tragic road accident.

The victims were returning from a church congress in Koforidua when the accident occurred.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the fuel tanker heading towards Accra burst a tyre while overtaking another vehicle.

The tanker veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the Ford Transit bus transporting the youth.

“The Authority extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and Associations affected by this unfortunate event. We also wish those injured a speedy and full recovery,” stated the NRSA in a press release issued from its Accra office.

This latest disaster contributes to an already worrying trend of increasing road fatalities across the country.

Data from the first half of 2025, released by the NRSA in collaboration with the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), revealed 7,289 road crashes nationwide resulting in 1,504 deaths between January and June 2025.

This translates to an average of more than eight lives lost daily, underscoring the severe public health crisis on Ghana’s roads.

In response to this “rising trend of fatal crashes”, the NRSA is now advocating for an intensified enforcement of road traffic regulations by the Police MTTD across the country.

The Authority is urging all motorists to strictly observe safety rules, including adhering to speed limits, ensuring their vehicles meet maintenance standards, and practising responsible driving.

“The safety of every road user remains a shared responsibility,” the NRSA emphasised, highlighting the critical role of every individual in preventing accidents.

The NRSA further reiterated its ongoing commitment to collaborating with key stakeholders such as the Ghana Police Service, various transport unions, and civil society actors.

These partnerships are crucial for enhancing road safety interventions nationwide, which typically involve public awareness campaigns, driver training, and improving road infrastructure.

The Authority stressed its dedication to “safeguarding lives and reducing the frequency and severity of crashes on our roads.”

As Ghana continues to grapple with the high incidence of road accidents, this latest tragedy on the N6 Highway serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for both stringent enforcement and collective responsibility to reverse the devastating trend of fatalities.

Watch as preacher insults trotro passengers for refusing to say ‘Amen’ after his sermon

A bizarre moment played out in a trotro today when a preacher man, after finishing his sermon, slammed passengers who refused to respond with “Hallelujah” or “Amen.”

In a video shared on X by GhanaWeb, the preacher is seen holding his phone and recording himself while preaching passionately.

However, when the passengers remained silent, he became visibly irritated and started insulting them.

“I can see some people in the trotro right now. They can’t say hallelujah, they can’t say amen. And Ghana Police, Members of Parliament, be very careful. Those on your television screens, those on your radio stations — they don’t teach the world how to say hallelujah, say amen,” he is heard saying.

He continued in the Twi dialect, suggesting that there are people in the world who are “nicer” than those sitting quietly in the vehicle.

His behaviour created a tense atmosphere, but the passengers chose not to respond.

The video has since sparked widespread debate online, with many questioning the boundaries of public preaching and the right of passengers to remain silent.

Ghana Airports Company MD terminates controversial revenue assurance contract

0

The Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, has terminated the controversial revenue assurance contract with Evatex Logistics Limited, with no payments made to date.

According to documents sighted by JoyNews, Evatex Logistics Limited was formally served with the letter of termination on 28th July, 2025.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor is investigating the circumstances under which the contract was awarded to the firm, affiliated with Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML).

The former Board Chairman of the GACL, Paul Adom-Otchere and host of Good Evening Ghana on Metro TV, has been arrested to assist in investigation into the contract.

Evatex Logistics Ltd was contracted by GACL to provide revenue assurance services in respect of cargo at Kotoka International Airport.

The terms of reference indicated that, upon successful completion of the assignment, GACL would pay Evatex Logistics Ltd out of the recouped amount—a fee equivalent to 15%, which shall be charged on the total of the possible royalties unearthed, concealment uncovered, and recouped by GACL under the audit assignment.

JoyNews understands that the Evatex assignment at the airport was recently evaluated and that there has been no concealment of revenue brought forward to GACL to date. No payment has so far been made to the firm by GACL since the inception of their operations.

JoyNews has also sighted documents showing that, prior to the Evatex Logistics contract being signed, the MD of GACL had directed a special audit to be carried out at the cargo section of the Kotoka International Airport in June 2024.

The audit findings showed no evidence of undercutting of revenue that would have justified revenue assurance. GACL, however, proceeded to award the contract on the premise that GACL was not going to pay Evatex Logistics Ltd any money until they provided evidence of concealment—which has not happened to date.

JoyNews understands that the decision to terminate the contract was taken due to the fact that no revenue concealment has been unearthed or recouped so far.

The termination clause in the agreement reads as follows:

“A party may terminate this agreement before the expiry, without cause, by giving the other party one month’s prior written notice of its decision to terminate this agreement.”

Investigations by the Special Prosecutor continue, with several more individuals scheduled to be interrogated. The Special Prosecutor’s main focus is the firm’s links with SML, an embattled company which was not party to the GACL revenue assurance contract.

Family of slain Kinbu SHS student demands justice

0

A family in grief is demanding immediate justice after their son, Addib Alhassan, was allegedly stabbed and killed by a fellow student at Kinbu Technical Senior High School in Accra on July 31, 2025.

The worrying incident, a stabbing that reportedly escalated from a dispute within a classroom, has triggered concerns in the school community and the public.

Yussif Abdul Salam, an uncle to the deceased, issued a stern ultimatum to Kinbu Technical Senior High School authorities, stressing that they have until the close of Friday, August 1, 2025, to produce the student alleged to have attacked Addib or face legal action.

According to initial reports, Addib Alhassan was stabbed following an escalating dispute with a colleague identified as Musah.

The specific nature of the dispute remains unclear, but its tragic culmination underscores serious concerns about safety and conflict resolution mechanisms within schools.

The gravity of the situation was amplified on Thursday when a group of agitated youth reportedly stormed the school premises upon learning of Addib Alhassan’s demise.

Reports further indicate that the student alleged to have carried out the attack has since absconded, prompting an immediate manhunt by security agencies.

Authorities from Kinbu Technical Senior High School, along with Regional Education Directors from the Klottey Korle Municipality, met with the deceased’s parents on Friday.

The closed-door meeting was convened to discuss the escalating matter and determine the next steps in the wake of the tragedy.

Such meetings typically involve discussions on investigations, disciplinary actions, and support for affected families and students.

Muntari Wahab, the Assembly Member for the Latebiokorshie electoral area, where the deceased Addib Alhassan resided, confirmed in an interview with Adom News that officials from National Security had assured them of a swift investigation into the incident.

This tragic event at Kinbu Technical Senior High School is likely to intensify the ongoing national conversation about security and violence within Ghana’s educational institutions.

In recent years, there have been increasing reports of student-on-student violence, drug use, and gang-related issues in some senior high schools, prompting calls for enhanced security measures, improved guidance and counselling services, and more robust disciplinary frameworks.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has often reiterated its commitment to student safety, but incidents like this underscore the persistent challenges.

Kennedy Agyapong explains his silence during 2024 election campaign

Kennedy Agyapong is a flagbearer hopeful of the NPP Kennedy Agyapong is a flagbearer hopeful of the NPP

Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, has shed light on his decision to remain silent during the peak of the campaign season for the 2024 election.

In a video clip of a recent interview shared on social media, the former Assin Central legislator said that comments he had previously made were used against him after he declared his intention to contest the party’s flagbearership.

Ken Agyapong said he came under heavy criticism within the party after he declared his intention to contest for the presidential slot.

According to him, some remarks he had made in the past, which were previously welcomed by the party and targeted at the National Democratic Congress (NDC), were suddenly used as tools to discredit him.

“When I was criticising the NDC, my party was happy. But when I decided to contest, all those things were used against me as if I had committed a sin,” he said.

He said videos of him criticising the NDC were deliberately circulated and misinterpreted.

“They show some videos of Kennedy Agyapong; he said this, he said that, just to paint me as not being presidential material. But if they are not being diabolical and you listen carefully, I was advising them and criticising some bad deeds of the party people.”

Kennedy Agyapong disclosed that he had extended an apology to President John Dramani Mahama for some of the harsh comments he made in the past.

According to him, despite their political differences, the President and his wife showed him nothing but respect and kindness.

“That’s why I apologised to President Mahama, because he’s been very nice to me. He loves me. His wife too. But because of the party, I ignored this relationship and criticised him. I have to be honest, I was harsh,” he admitted.

He further justified his silence using a biblical reference, saying, “My argument is, in the Bible, they have Ten Commandments. Since Abraham’s time, they’ve not added one to make it eleven. So the ten sins of Kennedy Agyapong — I won’t go and say anything again for you to add one to make it eleven or twelve. That’s why I’m quiet.”

Ghana Airports Cancels Audit Contract Amid Corruption Probe Involving Former Chairman

Ghana Airports Company Limited Gacl
Ghana Airports Company Limited Gacl

Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) terminated its revenue assurance audit agreement with Evatex Logistics effective August 27, 2025, citing a contractual clause allowing “termination without cause” upon one month’s notice.

The July 28 termination letter, signed by Managing Director Yvonne Opare, instructed Evatex to vacate Kotoka International Airport premises by the deadline.

The move follows the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) summons to former GACL Board Chairman Paul Adom-Otchere over suspected procurement breaches in the Evatex contract awarded December 2024. Though GACL’s notice did not reference the probe, its timing—three days after Adom-Otchere’s OSP invitation—suggests institutional damage control. Legal analysts view the termination as preemptive risk management amid a widening anti-corruption investigation into alleged sole-sourcing and board approval bypasses.

Industry sources indicate further audits of contracts under the previous board may follow. Evatex, tasked with airport revenue audits, has not publicly commented. GACL copied the notice to internal finance, legal, and commercial divisions but has issued no official statement.

Ghana’s Company Registry Launches 24-Hour Business Registration Amid Expansion Push

Office Of Registrar Of Companies
Office Of Registrar Of Companies

The Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC) has introduced a “Prestige Service” enabling businesses to complete registration within 24–48 hours for a nominal fee, Acting Registrar Maame Samma Peprah announced to Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee.

The expedited service—contingent on document accuracy—has already driven a 96.48% registration target achievement, formalizing over 50,000 entities in 2025.

To broaden access, ORC is deploying mobile registration clinics and developing a doorstep service app. Peprah highlighted expanded powers under Ghana’s revised Companies Act, authorizing compliance inspections and insolvency oversight to rescue distressed firms. However, field officers face harassment during quarterly checks, complicating enforcement.

Despite progress, public confusion persists following ORC’s split from the Registrar-General’s Department (RGD), with businesses still seeking trademark services now handled by RGD. Infrastructure gaps also challenge operations: only two regional offices launched this year due to funding constraints, while a decade-old e-registration system urgently requires replacement. Cybersecurity upgrades and ISO 27000 compliance protocols are being implemented alongside staff training.

In a related session, Law Reform Commission Acting CEO Mark Ziwu cited critical resource shortages including absent internet, computers, and vehicles hindering nationwide legal research. Lawmakers proposed commercializing services for revenue and pledged budgetary advocacy.

The Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) has issued a caution to the general public over an unauthorised billboard promoting the No-Fees-Stress policy.

In a statement released on Thursday, July 31, and signed by the Chief Executive Officer of the Students Loan Trust Fund, Dr Saajida Shiraz, the SLTF expressed concern about the use of its official logo, as well as that of the Ministry of Education, by some institutions without prior approval.

“Whilst we appreciate the public’s association with the flagship policy and its phenomenal impact on the lives of students and families, we wish to caution against the unauthorised use of our logo and that of the Ministry of Education for such promotional activities,” the statement read.

The SLTF emphasised that although it welcomes collaborations that enhance its mandate of providing timely financial support to tertiary students, any such initiatives must be done through formal engagement with its Corporate Communications Directorate.

The STLF reaffirmed its commitment to service delivery and urged individuals or groups interested in supporting its activities to follow proper channels.

Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed the operational deployment of the first serial-produced “Oreshnik” missile systems during talks with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko on Friday.

Putin stated, “Serial production is fully operational,” signaling completion of the medium-range weapon’s development phase.

The leaders discussed basing the system in Belarus this year, with Lukashenko noting military preparations at undisclosed sites. Putin indicated a timeline for the deployment: “We will most likely resolve this issue by the end of the year.” The missile was previously tested in November 2023 and later used against a Ukrainian military-industrial target, which Moscow framed as retaliation for Western arms supplies to Kyiv.

No technical specifications or exact deployment locations were disclosed. The move extends Russia’s strategic footprint in Belarus amid ongoing regional tensions following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Ghana’s Bauxite Potential Dimmed by Political Interference, Warns Expert

0

Ghana Bauxite Mining
Ghana Bauxite Mining

Ghana risks squandering the significant economic benefits of its vast bauxite reserves due to persistent political meddling in resource governance, according to Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) Country Manager Denis Gyeyir.

The Nyinahin deposit in the Ashanti Region, Ghana’s largest bauxite reserve, holds transformative potential for industrialization, job creation, and value addition. Yet Gyeyir emphasizes that geological limitations are not the obstacle—instead, extreme partisan politics threatens this opportunity.

Independent analyses, including studies by the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) and civil society groups, consistently identify bauxite as having unparalleled potential for local value addition compared to gold or manganese.

Processing bauxite into alumina and aluminium offers the most viable path to significant economic impact. Gyeyir stresses that bauxite is a globally critical mineral and Ghana’s strongest prospect for beneficiation. However, political interference has already begun eroding this promise.

The Nyinahin concession exemplifies this crisis. Since 2016, the lease has been mired in controversy—from the canceled award to Ibrahim Mahama’s Exton Cubic to the currently stalled Rocksure agreement in 2024. Gyeyir describes the asset as a “political football” transferred between administrations like an unwanted inheritance, creating investor uncertainty and delaying refinery, smelter, and industrial park projects.

He urges the government to treat strategic minerals like bauxite as national assets rather than political spoils, noting Nyinahin’s unique scale among Ghana’s four major concessions. With the concession’s management under intense scrutiny, Gyeyir calls for corporate decisions to be insulated from politics to unlock Ghana’s industrial future.

China-Funded US$30 Million Market Project Launched in Ghana’s Aflao

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has announced a $30 million grant from China to construct an ultramodern market and ancillary facilities in Aflao, Volta Region.

The project follows a joint inspection by Ablakwa and Chinese Ambassador H.E. Tong Defa of the 159-acre site allocated by the Aflao Traditional Authority.

In a social media statement, Ablakwa expressed gratitude to Togbui Adjongaga Amenya Fiti V, Paramount Chief of Aflao, and Tourism Minister Dzifa Abla Gomashie for facilitating the land allocation. He emphasized the project’s potential to transform Aflao into a regional trade hub, aligning with ECOWAS and African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) objectives while generating jobs and economic growth.

Described by Ablakwa as a “non-refundable gift” reflecting strong Ghana-China relations, the initiative fulfills a pledge by President John Mahama. The market complex aims to modernize commercial infrastructure in the border community, with construction timelines pending formal groundbreaking.

Ghana Forum Calls for African-Led Governance Overhaul

0

Exp X

African leaders and experts have urged a continent-wide rethinking of governance frameworks to better reflect local realities, during the inaugural Executive Forum on Strategic Compliance in West Africa.

Convened by Eunomia Risk Advisory in Accra, the gathering united public and private sector voices to address systemic governance failures tied to imported Western models.

Professor Douglas Boateng, Africa’s first Professor Extraordinaire for Supply and Value Chain Management, delivered a keynote critiquing “short-termism and ceremonial leadership.” He argued that unadapted foreign structures perpetuate inequality: “We built systems serving a few, not the common good.” Boateng positioned Ghana as pivotal to driving change, recalling its role in political liberation while advocating for economic emancipation rooted in Pan-African values.

The forum spotlighted stark governance gaps. African Peer Review Mechanism data estimates poor governance costs $150 billion annually through corruption and inefficiency. Just 12 of 54 African nations score above 60% on governance indexes. Discussions anchored reforms to the African Union’s Agenda 2063, noting Ghana’s 46% implementation rate trails Senegal’s 77%.

Key proposals emerged:

Education Integration: Boateng’s governance textbook, approved for Ghanaian secondary schools, aims to embed ethics early.

SME-Friendly Frameworks: Simplified compliance rules for small businesses to boost adoption.

ESGTT Model: Legal scholar Guy Christian Agbor proposed expanding ESG to include Technology and Taxation (ESGTT) to align governance with revenue goals.

Cultural Shifts: Nana Ama Botchway highlighted Ghana’s “deferential culture” as a boardroom barrier, urging context-sensitive designs.

Eunomia founder Tiffany Archer emphasized homegrown solutions: “Africa isn’t waiting to be invited to the table. We’re building our own.” The forum committed to ongoing dialogue, positioning technology harmonization under AfCFTA and insulated state-owned enterprises as urgent priorities.

A Trend that Celebrates Bonding Through Style

0

In the ever-evolving world of fashion, one heartwarming trend that continues to capture the attention of families around the world is the concept of matching mother and daughter outfits. This trend is more than just a style statement—it’s a celebration of love, connection, and the beautiful bond shared between a mother and her daughter.

Coordinated outfits have gained immense popularity, especially on social media platforms where family photoshoots often showcase adorable mini-me fashion moments. Whether it’s matching dresses, identical casual wear, or complementary accessories, these outfits create an eye-catching visual harmony that symbolizes unity and affection.

Matching outfits come in a wide range of styles. For casual days out, mothers and daughters can enjoy twinning in denim overalls, graphic tees, or coordinated loungewear. For more formal occasions like weddings or parties, flowing dresses in similar prints or colors create a sophisticated yet endearing look. Seasonal themes are also common—floral prints in spring, cozy knitwear in winter, and patriotic outfits for national holidays like the Fourth of July.

Beyond aesthetics, mother-daughter fashion is also about creating memories. The process of choosing outfits together can become a fun and bonding activity. It encourages creativity, teaches young girls about personal style, and boosts their confidence when they feel in sync with their mom.

Designers and clothing brands have tapped into this trend, offering specialized collections that cater to both adults and children. Many small businesses even offer custom-made outfits for that extra personal touch.

Ultimately, mother and daughter outfits reflect more than just fashion—they represent shared experiences, emotional closeness, and cherished moments. Whether it’s a casual weekend stroll or a special event, twinning with your little one is a stylish way to express love and make memories that last a lifetime.

We all need stronger voices to challenge us

The Journalism Hangout as it went on.

It was past 8pm on Monday July 28, 2025. In the heart of the city nicknamed ‘The Oxygen City’, Ho, the capital of the Volta Region. The group of journalists, journalism students and PR practitioners sat in a circle – about 20 individuals, including the convenor at Pleasure Gardens . It was past closing time for The Journalism Hangout that started around 4pm, 30 minutes past the scheduled start time. But the time felt too quickly gone. No one was in a hurry to leave.

The conversation was all-rounded and engaging – on ethics, storytelling, fact-checking, how to pitch a story, cultivate sources, and independent reporting. But what hit the participants harder was the realization that their journalism was largely event-driven. It’s what they have been trained to do, it seemed, and independent reporting looked a distant possibility. But that was the reason for The Journalism Hangout, to let journalists know it is possible to break the glass ceiling and do world class journalism, by going out there to dig for information – independently.

“We all need stronger voices to challenge us. I’m going back to resurrect an abandoned project,” says Rustum Senorgbe, a broadcast journalist with Volta Premier radio.

Rustum Senorgbe

While The Journalism Hangout is conversational, most participants took copious notes. An indication that they are learning a lot from the conversation.

We all need stronger voices to challenge us. I’m going back to resurrect an abandoned project.

Joyce Dzidzor of Global FM, had this to say: “My experience at The Journalism Hangout was great. I have been enlightened. Now I know I have to look beyond what I hear or what I am told at events.”

She adds, “A true journalist is one that fact-checks information before putting it across.”

Divine Bugonu, a first-year communication and applied media technology student at the Ho Technical University who was grateful for the opportunity, had this to say about The Journalism Hangout: “My experience was an impactful one. I’ve learned to be ethical, bold, courageous and stand out in my practice of journalism.”

My experience at The Journalism Hangout was great. I have been enlightened.

For Elikem Kofi Ablorde of CMG-Ho FM, “The Journalism Hangout was an exciting hands-on educational experience, and it will go along way. I’m grateful to Mr Dogbevi for impacting the next generation of journalists.”

Kofi Gamor was candid. Inspired and motivated by the four-hour interactive session, he said: “It’s a rare opportunity having to sit under the tutelage of iconic practitioners who have blazed the trail in the practice of journalism, for free. It’s indeed rare,” adding with a hint of expectation he said, “I hope nuggets shared with us by Mr Dogbevi will go a long way to sharpen our individual skills and help improve our practice of journalism.”

It’s a rare opportunity having to sit under the tutelage of iconic practitioners who have blazed the trail in the practice of journalism, for free.

Without any doubt, the main mission of The Journalism Hangout is to inspire and guide journalists by sharing information on best practices to motivate them to aim at improving their journalism.

“The informal training sessions seek to transfer skills in practical ways and to motivate journalists to put the knowledge to work,” says Emmanuel K Dogbevi, the convenor and lead trainer of the programme.

As Senorgbe said, that stronger voice has stirred in the participants a desire to aim to do better journalism than they are doing now.

Lack of competition law fuelling consumer exploitation – CUTS Int’l

0

The West African Regional Director of CUTS International, Appiah Kusi Adomako, wants government to urgently pass a national competition law to tackle monopoly in key sectors, including pay-TV.

This follows MultiChoice’s refusal to reduce DStv prices. Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Friday, August 1, Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George said the company claimed in a nine-page response that despite the cedi’s recent gains, its 240% depreciation over the past eight years makes a price cut impossible.

Sam George has therefore directed the National Communications Authority (NCA) to suspend DSTV’s broadcasting license if the company fails to reduce its prices by August 7, 2025.

Speaking to this in an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Friday August 1, Adomako noted that the absence of competition has allowed companies like MultiChoice, operators of DSTV, to operate without effective regulatory checks, to the disadvantage of consumers.

“As a country, if we want to reduce such a dominant monopoly, I think that we need to come up with a competition law,” he said. “By competition law, I am sure we will be able to address most of these issues.”

Adomako revealed that although Ghana has had a draft competition bill prepared for nearly two decades, it is yet to be tabled before Parliament.

“Of course, we have this draft bill hanging over the Ministry of Trade for the past 18 years, and it’s never gone to Parliament,” he lamented.

“We hope that once Ghana is able to put it before Parliament, we can get some of these things destroyed.”

Police arrest ex-convict over armed robbery, carjacking incident

0

Police have arrested an ex-convict in connection with a violent robbery and carjacking incident reported earlier this year involving a taxi driver.

The suspect, Vincent Gbetorglo, was arrested on July 30, 2025, at the Accra Mall following intelligence gathered by investigators. A search during his arrest led to the recovery of four mobile phones—one of which was confirmed to belong to Vic Martin Obeng, a taxi driver who was attacked and robbed on New Year’s Day.

The arrest follows a complaint filed by Obeng on January 6, 2025, at the CID Headquarters. He reported that on January 1 around 9:00 p.m., while working with an ash-and-yellow Toyota Corolla taxi (registration number GM 296-16), he was violently attacked by three passengers at Madina Zongo Junction.

According to Obeng, the young men hired him to drive them to Haatso. But upon reaching a section of the road near the Haatso ICGC Church, the passengers turned violent. “They attacked me inside the vehicle, covered my face with my own shirt, and tied me up,” he recounted.

A police statement added that the suspects forced the victim to lie on the floor of the back seat, took control of the vehicle, and stole his daily sales, mobile phone, and GHC 13,000 in mobile money before abandoning him near Westland.

Following the report, investigators visited the crime scene and launched a manhunt with support from informants. Gbetorglo was eventually apprehended with the stolen mobile phone in his possession.

During interrogation, the suspect claimed he had bought the phones at Kwame Nkrumah Circle but was unable to identify or lead police to the alleged seller. Further checks by the police revealed that Gbetorglo is an ex-convict who was sentenced in 2011 by Cocoa Affairs Court 1 to a 40-year prison term. He was, however, released in 2023 after a successful appeal.

Police suspect the incident is part of a wider pattern involving a criminal syndicate that targets taxi drivers through violent attacks. Intelligence gathered so far indicates that the methods used—including abduction, robbery, and attempted killings—mirror tactics seen in similar recent cases and may involve other ex-convicts.

Efforts are currently underway to arrest the remaining accomplices and recover the stolen vehicle.

Two armed robbery suspects have reportedly lost their lives in a shootout with personnel of the Ghana Police Service at Atebubu, the capital town of the Atebubu-Amantin District in the Bono East Region.

The police, in a series of posts shared on the evening of Friday, August 1, 2025, indicated that its officers on patrol in an anti-robbery operation along the Atebubu highway chanced upon the suspects attacking some commuters on July 30, 2025.

It said that the robbers opened fire on the police team as they were drawing closer to the incident.

It added that the team returned fire, which hit the two suspects, who were pronounced dead on arrival after being rushed to the hospital.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that on 30th July 2025, a team of police officers on patrol duty came across a robbery attack on some commuters along the Atebubu highway.

“Upon sighting the police team, the suspects started firing towards the police. The police returned fire, leading to two of the suspects being fatally wounded. They were rushed to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival,” some of the posts read.

The police stated that the remaining robbery suspects managed to escape and are at large.

It also stated that it retrieved a short gun loaded with two live cartridges, four spent cartridges, and a machete from the scene of the incident.

Defamation Suit Targets Political Attacks

…amid Mounting Smear Campaigns

Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, Dr. Hugh Clement A. Public backlash influenced OSP to review bail terms

0

Legal Counsel for Paul Adom-Otchere, Nicholas Lenin Anane Agyei, has suggested that strong public reaction to the initial bail conditions imposed on his client may have influenced the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) decision to revise them.

The former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) was granted bail on Friday, August 1, after new terms were approved by the OSP. The revised conditions, secured by the Jospong Group of Companies, replaced earlier requirements that included sureties backed by landed property — assets Adom-Otchere is said not to personally own.

In a statement, the OSP indicated that the adjusted terms still fulfilled the objectives of the original bail conditions and noted that investigations remain ongoing.

In an exclusive interview on the Channel One Newsroom on Friday, August 1, Mr. Anane Agyei cited the overwhelming public outcry as a possible factor in the OSP’s decision to amend the conditions.

He argued that the initial requirement was unreasonable under the circumstances and should never have been imposed.

“The argument we made yesterday, which was that the condition of requiring him to provide two landed properties in his name was unreasonable in the circumstances, is the same point we urged on him today.

“I believe strongly that given that many people reacted to the requirement that he should provide two landed properties may have gone to weighed on his mind to make a different decision. We strongly believe that we shouldn’t have gotten there in the first place,” he stated.

The case involves an alleged improper award of a revenue assurance contract during Adom-Otchere’s tenure as GACL board chairman. The contract was reportedly executed without full board approval.

Decomposed body found hanging in a farm at Dzodze

By Michael Foli Jackidy

Dzodze (V/R), Aug. 1, GNA – A decomposed body of an unidentified man, was discovered hanging from a tree on a farm near the Hand of God Church of All Nations, along the Dzodze-Akanu road in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta Region.

The unidentified man is believed to be in his 30s.

The grim discovery, made on Wednesday, July 30, revealed a body in an advanced state of decomposition. The man was dressed in a sleeveless top and black shorts.

Due to the condition of the body, the Police were initially unable to retrieve it. However, on Thursday, July 31, officers from the Ketu North Municipal Environmental Health Unit joined the Police to assist with the recovery.

Mr Cephas Horsu, Municipal Environmental Health Officer, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that his team had to fumigate the body before it could be safely transported.

The remains were subsequently conveyed to the mortuary at Dzodze St. Anthony’s Hospital for further Police investigation.

Mr Paul Atsu Avuglah, Assembly Member for the Adagbledu Electoral Area, expressed concern over the incident, stating that it was the second time a suicide by hanging had been reported in the area.

He noted that the body has not yet been identified and called on residents, especially those in and around the Adagbledu Electoral Area, to report any missing relatives.

He said the condition of the body suggests that the incident may have occurred about a week prior to its discovery.

MTN Ghana Engages Stakeholders in Volta Region

0

The stakeholders and MTN staff in a group meeting

MTN Ghana, leading telecommunications company, has blamed recent disruptions in call and internet services on rampant fibre optic cable cuts and thefts, which it says are increasingly undermining its infrastructure and service delivery in parts of the Volta and Eastern Regions.

The disclosure was made during the company’s 2025 Media and Stakeholders Forum, held at the Volta Serene Hotel in Ho. The event brought together media practitioners, local authorities, and key stakeholders from across the region to engage in dialogue on MTN’s operations, challenges, and development agenda.

Network Operations Engineer for MTN Ghana, George Hunorkpa, stated that between 70 to 80 percent of recent network interruptions were due to fibre-related issues. He attributed the damage largely to the activities of road contractors, property developers, and other construction professionals, whose heavy machinery often severs critical fibre infrastructure.

“Despite continuous engagements with relevant associations, these incidents persist, and it’s disheartening,” he said.

He emphasised that fibre optic cables are now classified as national security infrastructure and called on authorities, contractors, and the public to help safeguard them.

Mr. Hunorkpa further revealed that cable theft, mostly carried out by individuals posing as scrap metal dealers, has become a growing concern.

These criminals reportedly target cell sites under cover of darkness typically around 1am cutting cables and stealing essential equipment such as batteries and fuel, resulting in severe disruptions to mobile and internet services.

Citing a recent incident in Kpeve and another in Anyirawasi, he noted that surveillance footage had captured suspects attempting to evade detection.

“Once we see sector one signal going off, we dispatch engineers. Sometimes we scare them off, but often by the time police arrive, the criminals are gone,” he saed.

He recounted that a single incident could knock out services in four to five communities, affecting both personal and business communications, and leading to significant financial losses.

He further stated that MTN Ghana has stepped up security measures across affected zones. These include real time network monitoring systems, rapid response deployments, and closer collaboration with security agencies.

The company also appealed to community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity around its infrastructure.

Beyond addressing operational threats, the forum highlighted MTN’s broader contributions to the region. Discussions focused on digital transformation, innovation, and social responsibility initiatives in health, education, and economic empowerment. MTN executives emphasised the company’s commitment to regional development, including ongoing infrastructure investments and support for local communities.

Zanetor condemns killing, demands swift justice

The Member of Parliament for Klottey-Korle, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has strongly condemned the fatal stabbing of a student at Kinbu Senior High School, describing the incident as both tragic and senseless.

In a statement issued on Friday, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings expressed deep shock and sorrow over the stabbing, which occurred on Thursday, July 31, 2025, and led to the untimely death of a student.

“I strongly condemn this act of violence and I will collaborate with the Ghana Police Service and other relevant authorities to ensure that thorough investigations are swiftly done and that justice is served,” she said.

The MP stressed that schools must remain safe spaces for learning and personal development, and called on authorities in both the education and security sectors to urgently reassess and reinforce safety protocols in all educational institutions.

“This tragedy must be a wake-up call for all stakeholders in the education and security sectors to prevent such incidents from recurring,” she stated.

Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings also extended her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, students, staff, and the wider Kinbu SHS community. She pledged her commitment to work with the Ghana Education Service, school management, and security agencies to improve safety and mental health support structures in schools across her constituency.

The Ghana Police Service is yet to release full details on the incident, as investigations are still ongoing.

Addib Alhassan, a 15-year-old first-year student, was fatally stabbed on July 31 during an altercation reportedly sparked by a heated argument with a classmate.

The exact cause of the confrontation remains unclear. However, reports indicate that the student was initially rushed to the Adabraka Polyclinic and later transferred to the Ridge Hospital due to the severity of his injuries.

He was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.

Adom-Otchere was misleading OSP when he said he had no property – Kpebu

0

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has expressed skepticism over Paul Adom‑Otchere’s assertion that he owns no landed property in Ghana, a claim that forms one of the bases of the bail arrangements in his ongoing probe by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on Friday night, Mr Kpebu argued that OSP should not rely on such declarations alone when setting bail conditions, particularly given the high sensitivity of the GACL revenue contract case.

Majority Leader Touts Govt Fiscal Discipline

0

The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, yesterday rebutted criticisms from the Minority over the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review, dismissing the Minority Leader’s “60:40 economy” tag as a diversionary tactic and instead praising the government’s fiscal discipline, social investment achievements, and international credibility.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament during his concluding remarks on the debate, Mr. Ayariga accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of attempting to rewrite history and conceal the mismanagement and political turmoil that defined the latter part of its administration.

He cited the 2022 internal rebellion within the NPP’s own ranks, where 88 Majority MPs petitioned for the dismissal of the then-Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, due to his “abysmal performance.”

“It’s astonishing to hear the Minority Leader now speak glowingly of the very Finance Minister they once mobilised against. Let’s not forget that it was under his leadership that virtually all social intervention funds were capped – the GETFund, the District Assembly Common Fund, the Road Fund, the Energy Fund. Every single one,” Mr. Ayariga said.

He contrasted that record with what he described as the NDC government’s track record of not only uncapping these funds but also making timely payments to ensure their effectiveness.

“We have uncapped them, sustained them, and paid them. That’s how to demonstrate real commitment to social intervention – not by launching flashy initiatives and starving them of funds,” he said.

Addressing the now-infamous “60:40” tag levelled by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Mr. Ayariga described it as a mischaracterisation of a lawful decision made by the Attorney-General in the case of The Republic v. Kwabena Duffuor & 7 Others.

He clarified that the decision to discontinue prosecution was grounded in legal principles tied to significant fund recovery and not a corruption bargain, as insinuated.

Beyond rebutting opposition claims, the Majority Leader highlighted the strong vote of confidence Ghana has received from global institutions under the current administration.

He quoted the IMF’s Deputy Managing Director, who recently praised the Mahama government for taking “bold corrective actions” to stabilise the economy after major policy slippages under the NPP.

“The IMF, credit rating agencies like Fitch, and civil society groups are all saying the same thing – Ghana is on the right path. Fitch has upgraded our rating to B- with a stable outlook,” Mr. Ayariga stated.

He pointed to key highlights from the mid-year review, including a historic GH¢113.7 billion drop in public debt within five months; a payroll audit revealing GH¢150 million in unearned salaries, with 53,311 separated staff still on the government payroll and 14,000 unverifiable employees; and renewed efforts to populate the Sinking Fund, including both cedi and dollar deposits.

According to him, there is a shift toward more targeted infrastructure investment by prioritising a manageable number of stalled projects, adding that there are reforms in the energy sector to reduce reliance on expensive fuels by transitioning to natural gas, supported by projected revenue of GH¢2.9 billion from the Energy Sector Levies Act.

Mr. Ayariga emphasised that the government’s overarching theme was fiscal discipline, noting that Ghana’s fiscal deficit had narrowed from 10.7% in 2022 to 1.1% in 2025, with inflation dropping from 54% to around 23% and debt-to-GDP falling from 84% to 43.8%.

“Yes, we are not spending – because we refuse to repeat the wasteful excesses of the previous administration. We are restoring confidence in the economy not by slogans, but through disciplined action,” he said.

Mr. Ayariga reminded the House that the country’s current economic recovery was not accidental, but the result of deliberate reforms, prudent financial decisions, and a determination to build sustainable foundations for growth.

0

Two suspected armed robbers have been killed following a shootout with the Ghana Police Service during an anti-robbery operation along the Atebubu highway in the Bono East Region.

Ghana Hubs Network hosts 2025 Annual Gathering to strengthen innovation and inclusion

0

The Ghana Hubs Network has held its 2025 Annual Gathering of Hubs in Accra to deepen collaboration and innovation across the country’s entrepreneurship landscape.

Held under the theme “Resilient Hubs, Thriving Futures: Strengthening Ghana’s Innovation Ecosystem”, the two-day event brought together hub leaders, entrepreneurs, development partners, and policymakers to explore pathways for accelerating inclusive digital transformation and job creation.

Chairperson of the Ghana Hubs Network, Yaw Adu-Gyamfi, highlighted the growing impact of innovation hubs nationwide, noting that over 100 active hubs—80 of which are under the Ghana Hubs Network—have trained 12,000 youth and women, and supported more than 6,000 startups and small businesses.

In 2024 alone, the network mobilised $4 million in funding from partners such as the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), GIZ, Mastercard Foundation, and Ashesi University.

He stressed the need for a supportive policy environment and called for the swift passage of the Startup and Innovation Bill. Adu-Gyamfi also urged academia, government, and the private sector to deepen their commitment to youth innovation and entrepreneurship.

A major highlight of the gathering was the launch of a Gender-Responsive Toolkit, developed in collaboration with GIZ and GFA Consulting Group, to promote the inclusion of women and persons with disabilities within Ghana’s innovation space.

Adu-Gyamfi emphasised that Ghana’s innovation future must be built beyond Accra and powered by young innovators and changemakers across all regions.

Government commits to strengthening hubs

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of NEIP, Joan Selasie Ahiawordor, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting innovation hubs nationwide to accelerate youth entrepreneurship and inclusive economic growth.

Speaking on behalf of the NEIP CEO, she described the event as “a vital platform where impact is created, ideas are shaped, and partnerships are built to drive the future of Ghana’s innovation ecosystem.”

She noted that entrepreneurship is one of the most powerful tools to reduce unemployment, foster innovation, and drive inclusive growth. NEIP, she said, remains focused on three key areas: capacity building for entrepreneurs through training and mentorship; improving access to funding and markets; and strengthening the broader entrepreneurship ecosystem through strategic partnerships.

Highlighting NEIP’s flagship Adwumawura Programme, she described it as a bold intervention aimed at creating at least 10,000 businesses annually, with a particular focus on women, persons with disabilities, and underserved communities.

“The Adwumawura Programme is not just about handing out capital. It’s a full support system—business development services, mentorship, training, and market access—to ensure sustainability,” she explained.

She further emphasised that NEIP views hubs as “foundational partners” in Ghana’s entrepreneurial journey. “Hubs are where many entrepreneurs take their first steps. You are the first responders and front-liners of building resilience,” she said.

Ahiawordor also announced enhanced collaboration with hubs through co-hosted incubator and accelerator programmes, direct financial and technical support, and two-way policy feedback mechanisms.

To the entrepreneurs and ecosystem players gathered, she affirmed: “NEIP is here for you—whether you’re just starting or scaling. We believe in your potential and are investing in your future.”

GIZ reaffirms support, urges stronger collaboration

Emmanuel Mumuni, Programme Component Manager at GIZ, reiterated the agency’s strong support for the Ghana Hubs Network, describing innovation hubs as critical to Ghana’s sustainable economic development.

“Years ago, hubs weren’t even part of the mainstream conversation. Today, it’s hard to find any SME in Ghana that hasn’t interfaced with a hub—whether through training, funding, capacity building, or mentorship,” he observed.

Mr Mumuni said digital transformation remains a key pillar of GIZ’s work in Ghana, particularly around job creation, entrepreneurship, and macroeconomic development.

He called on members of the Ghana Hubs Network to “strengthen institutional capacity, align strategies, and speak with a unified voice to influence national policy,” especially in areas such as cybersecurity, digital inclusion, and the pending Startup and Innovation Bill.

He praised the network’s leadership, particularly Executive Director Yaw Adu-Gyamfi and the board, urging all hubs to contribute actively: “The success of the network depends on every member.”

Africa must innovate in AI – Florence Toffa

Florence Toffa, Director of Mobile Web Ghana, urged African nations to become creators—not just consumers—of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI).

Speaking on a panel on private sector participation in the innovation ecosystem, Toffa called for inclusive training and innovation to avoid being left behind in the global AI transformation.

“When new technologies arrive in Africa, we often sit back and observe while others take the lead,” she said. “But this time, as part of the responsible AI movement, we are determined to act differently.”

She referenced Ghana’s newly launched national AI strategy and stressed the key role of innovation hubs in ensuring communities are not excluded from the AI revolution.

“We must train people to create, build labs, and develop locally relevant solutions using AI,” she added. “Economic empowerment is coming through this industry, and we must claim our share.”

She also shared experiences with global partners willing to help access funding, noting, “Sometimes, the biggest barrier is simply asking for help.”

GFA Consulting Group deepens support for hubs

Alhassan Muniru, Digital Innovation and Partnership Manager at GFA Consulting Group, underlined the importance of partnering with local hubs to build sustainable grassroots development in Ghana’s startup ecosystem.

GFA, a Germany-based consultancy, currently works with over 15 hubs from Accra to Tamale, helping early-stage innovators and startups.

“If we want to make a lasting impact at the grassroots level, we must work with the real actors on the ground—hubs and young innovators,” Muniru said.

He pointed out that most small organisations lack direct access to funding, and GFA helps bridge this gap through partnerships and capacity-building.

Private sector’s role in startup success

Ashwin Ravichandran, Portfolio and Programmes Advisor at MEST Africa, emphasised that private sector engagement is essential for strengthening Ghana’s innovation ecosystem.

He noted that the most impactful partnerships go beyond funding and include strategic involvement and access to corporate networks.

Ravichandran cited MTN Ghana’s support for startup hackathons as an example of strategic engagement and mentioned MedPharma—a startup born from such ecosystem support—that is set to launch a new health insurance scheme via MTN Mobile Money.

He also praised the Kosmos Innovation Centre for building strong ties with universities and creating a well-integrated innovation ecosystem.

Mojo Morgan to release genre-bending EP ‘Jamaica Love’

0

Grammy Award-winning artiste and founding member of Morgan Heritage, Mojo Morgan, has released his anthemic new single, ‘Dreams,’ paired with the announcement of his long-awaited EP, Jamaica Love, slated for August 29, 2025.

‘Dreams’ is for every hustler, every survivor, and every soul who refuses to settle. Motivational, soulful, and uplifting, it’s a declaration that your dreams are valid, no matter where you come from or what you’ve been told.

The track channels the artiste’s own journey of resilience and invites listeners to share and pursue their own dreams unapologetically. Co-produced by Dancehall super-producer Droptop, ‘Dreams’ fuses reggae, rock, and inspirational energy in a way that feels fresh yet familiar.

Droptop, founder of Droptop Records, adds, “Working with Mojo on this record was powerful. ‘Dreams’ isn’t just a song, it’s a soundtrack for anyone on the grind.

Coming off recent hits with Popcaan, Skeng, and Chronic Law, I wanted to bring that same energy to something more uplifting. This one’s for the streets and the soul.”

Rooted in reggae and dancehall but infused with hip-hop, country, Americana, and global rhythms, the EP Jamaica Love is a deeply personal project that honours his homeland, his family legacy, and especially the memory of his late brother and bandmate, Peetah Morgan.

Not only does the EP blend genres, but also generations into a timeless sound with no borders—featuring collaborations with Gramps Morgan, Popcaan, Sizzla, Maino, Chronic Law, and Mojo’s own children and nephew—making it as much a family celebration as it is a cultural statement.

“Jamaica Love is more than music, it’s a message. It’s legacy, healing, and the soundtrack for anyone who’s ever had to fight for their dream,” he said.

Mojo coined his sound as “Rasta Rock,” a fusion shaped by the lyrical depth of Bob Dylan and Peter Tosh, the raw spirit of 2Pac and Vybz Kartel, and the emotional textures of Coldplay, The Cranberries, and Phil Collins. It’s a lane of his own—global, grounded, and full of heart.

About Mojo Morgan

Born in Brooklyn and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts, alternative/reggae artist Mojo Morgan grew up straddling two worlds – the American dream and the spirit of Jamaica.

As a founding member of the GRAMMY Award-winning group Morgan Heritage, Mojo developed a sound rooted in tradition but boldly unafraid to push boundaries and helped pioneer a sound that elevated Jamaican music to international acclaim.

Mojo, alongside his group, helped bring authentic Jamaican roots back to the world stage.

Today, he stands at the forefront of a new movement – blending legacy with innovation, family with business, and culture with commerce.

A true musical visionary, Mojo has carved out his own lane with a genre-defying sound he calls “Rasta Rock” – a fusion of roots reggae, dancehall, rock, hip-hop, country soul, and pop sensibility.

His solo work builds on the foundation of his family’s iconic legacy while boldly pushing forward with messages of hope, love, and resilience.

“I’m an artiste, but I’m also a father, a son, and a visionary. My mission is to inspire, not just with my voice, but with how I live, what I build, and how I lead.”

Mojo Morgan is poised to bring a new wave of reggae fusion to the world stage—one heartfelt anthem at a time.

The President of RNAQ Holdings, Richard Nii Armah Quaye, has announced plans to expand the RNAQ food bank initiative to the Ashanti Region in a few weeks after its launch in Accra on Friday, August 1.

The project aims to combat food insecurity, especially among the youth in Ghanaian communities.

In Greater Accra, the food banks are located in Korlegono, Kasoa, Ashaiman, Odorkor, and Madina, where a Ghana Card grants free daily meals.

Speaking at the launch, Mr. Quaye shared his vision to establish similar initiatives across all other regions.

“In just a few weeks, the Ashanti Region will see the next phase of this dream come to life, and then, region by region, we will move until every part of this nation is touched.

Richard Nii Armah Quaye also pledged 90% of all his earnings from his businesses to this course.

“I have made a personal commitment that 90% of all income I earn from most of my businesses will be directed towards funding this course and all other major projects I intend to undertake. This is not charity, this is nation building,” he said.

Feed Ghana Programme offers lucrative investment prospects – Agric Director

0

By Francis Ntow

Accra, Aug. 1, GNA – The Feed Ghana programme presents a viable opportunity for profitable investment in modernising agriculture and addressing climate change, Mr Eric Hatudson Asamani, Greater Accra Regional Director of Agriculture, has said.

He made the remarks at the Ghana-Nebraska Agribusiness, Growth and Trade Relations Chamber (GNEBCham) forum in Accra, themed “Doing Business in America with Americans.”

“Our proposal is the Feed Ghana programme, which comes with all manner of opportunities, mechanising and scaling up our production base, and this is achievable through the establishment of agribusiness centres,” Mr Asamani stated.

He identified input supply, land development, technology, and infrastructure, particularly for producing soybean, maize, rice, sorghum, starchy crops, tree crops, and poultry processing, as priority areas for investment.

Mr Asamani said Ghana’s five central pivot irrigation systems were inadequate and presented further investment potential.

“It’s a huge opportunity for investors, especially in the era of climate change. The water bodies exist, and we can really create more with the involvement of dugouts, for commercial farming,” he added.

Mr. Asamani noted that investing in Ghana would allow Nebraska agribusinesses to consolidate their presence and expand into West Africa.

“For international investors, Ghana’s stable democratic environment, English-speaking population, and strategic location in West Africa present additional advantages beyond the immediate agricultural prospects,” he said.

Ms Alberta Nana Akyea Akosa, Co-Founder of GNEBCham, said the Chamber was promoting collaborative agribusiness ventures to avoid siloed operations.

“We are always looking for our individual interest, but this time, we’re coming together as a Chamber to even have a commercial farm project, bringing value and volume to the table and exporting our products in large quantities sustainably,” she said.

Mr Ken Schilz, former Nebraska State Senator and Co-Founder of GNEBCham, said American companies were developing smaller, more practical machinery to support Ghana’s agricultural needs.

He emphasised that successful international partnerships required sustained effort and noted ongoing engagements with Ghana’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture to advance mutual initiatives.

On July 29, 2025, the ECOWAS Commission’s Department of Economic Affairs and Agriculture held an internal consultative meeting in Abuja to prepare for the official launch of the ECOWAS Business Council (EBC). The EBC is intended to serve as the highest decision-making body representing the private sector within the region.

The meeting, attended by key directors and representatives from relevant ECOWAS directorates, focused on reviewing the EBC’s framework—approved by the Authority of Heads of State and Government—and outlining the roadmap for its formal launch later in 2025.

Representing Commissioner Massandjé Touré-Litse, Dr. Tony Luka Elumelu, Director of Private Sector, highlighted the EBC’s goal of driving regional economic growth, attracting investment, and boosting competitiveness. He confirmed that all establishment procedures have been followed, including the formation of a committee to define stringent membership criteria and the rigorous screening of nominated business entities to ensure only the most qualified join the Council.

He highlighted the importance of the consultative meeting as an opportunity to harness collective wisdom and experience to shape a Council that truly reflects the interests of the region’s business community. In the EBC internal consultative meeting, participants were urged to provide unreserved feedback, constructive criticism, and innovative ideas to help ensure that the EBC is effective, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of businesses across the region.

Preparations To Launch The Ecowas Business Council Underway

Declaring the meeting open, the Director of Trade, Mr. Kolawole SOFOLA, commended the Program Directorate for its efforts in spearheading the establishment of the ECOWAS Business Council, as mandated by the Authority of Heads of State. He noted that, like other Regional Economic Communities (RECs), ECOWAS is now set to establish its own Business Council to represent private sector interests and drive regional integration for sustainable development and economic prosperity in West Africa.

Also speaking at the event, the ECOWAS Director for Transport, Mr. Chris APPIAH, stressed the importance of establishing a permanent platform for ongoing communication between the ECOWAS Directorates and the Business Council to effectively address private sector concerns.

Adom-Otchere hasn’t been formally charged by OSP

0

A member of the legal team representing former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Paul Adom-Otchere, has clarified that his client has not been formally charged with any offence by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Friday, August 1, lawyer Nicholas Lenin Anane Agyei stated that while Mr. Adom-Otchere has been cautioned, no specific charges have been filed under Ghanaian criminal law.

“As I speak to you, he has not been officially charged by the OSP. He has been cautioned and informed that the OSP is investigating suspected offences. So, as we speak, Mr. Adom-Otchere has not been charged with any specific offence known to our criminal laws,” Anane Agyei said.

His clarification comes after Mr. Adom-Otchere was released from custody upon meeting revised bail conditions. The new terms, reportedly secured through the Jospong Group of Companies acting as surety, were agreed upon following negotiations between his legal team and the OSP.

Mr. Adom-Otchere had earlier been detained after failing to meet initial bail requirements, citing a lack of landed property in Ghana. He is being investigated in relation to a revenue assurance contract allegedly awarded without full approval from the GACL Board.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Airports Company Limited has terminated the controversial contract with Evatex Logistics Limited, which had been the subject of months of public scrutiny and investigations by the OSP.

The Managing Director of GACL, Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, formally announced the termination in a letter dated July 28, 2025, addressed to Evatex. The contract, which was signed on December 4, 2024, is set to end on August 27, 2025.

According to the termination letter, no evidence of revenue concealment was uncovered during Evatex’s operations at the cargo section of Kotoka International Airport. As a result, GACL has not made any payments to the company.

Ghana renews commitment to One Health in high-level policy dialogue

0

Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to the One Health approach, with human, animal and environmental health stakeholders aligning priorities to advance integrated action.

A national policy dialogue in Accra provided a platform to review progress and chart next steps. The meeting was promoted by the Evidence-Informed Policy Approaches for One Health (OH-EVI) project, led by the Global Health and Infectious Disease Research Group at the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (GHID-KCCR), KNUST, with support from the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the German Ministry of Health.

The event built on findings from a three-day stakeholder engagement in November 2024, which produced Evidence Briefs for Policy (EBPs) to strengthen Ghana’s evidence-based decision-making on One Health and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Ghana’s COVID-19 response demonstrated the value of cross-sector coordination during public health emergencies. Since then, the country has created a One Health Platform and developed a draft policy, though implementation has not yet begun.

Dr. Michael Owusu, lead of the Virology and Diagnostic Group at KNUST and co-lead of the One Health Virology Group at KCCR, said the gap between evidence generation and policy use must be closed.

“Who collects the evidence and feeds it into our surveillance systems?” he asked. “Reports are published, but key lessons often fail to inform policy uptake.”

Dr. John Amuasi, Principal Investigator of the OH-EVI project, said the unfinished policy could be an advantage.

“This may be a blessing in disguise,” he said. “Because the policy hasn’t been finalized, we now have the opportunity to incorporate recent evidence synthesized through the OH-EVI project, grounded in real stakeholder engagement, and aligned with important global currents like the Lancet One Health Commission Report and the WHO Pandemic Agreement. Ghana has a chance to lead in a way that is both informed and forward-looking.”

Ruth Arthur, Director of Disease Epidemics at the National Disaster Management Organisation, cited lessons from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s support in developing a multi-sectoral surveillance tool and work plan.

“We need to better communicate to leadership the value of One Health as an investment in national resilience,” she said.

Former Ghana Health Service Director of Public Health, Dr. Badu Sarkodie, stressed political will.

“Political buy-in is critical. Our leaders must understand it, own it, internalize it, and drive it,” he said. “Every government wants health security. One Health will provide that. Every government wants food security; One Health will provide that. Every government wants to reduce outbreaks; One Health will do that too.”

The OH-EVI project’s first phase built capacity and synthesized evidence. The current phase focuses on translating that evidence into policy options tailored to Ghana’s needs.

Participants identified three priorities: preparing a policy brief for national leadership, framing the social and economic value of One Health, and advocating for dedicated funding.

One participant summed up the challenge: “We have the knowledge. What we need now is coordinated action and leadership to ensure follow-through.”

Nigerians Must Go Protests in Ghana: Mahama assures Nigerians of their safety

Featured, Politics

By Anthony Isibor

PRESIDENT John Dramani Mahama of Ghana has assured President Bola Tinubu of the safety of Nigerians and their property in Ghana.

The Ghanaian leader,  who condemned any form of violence or xenophobia during his meeting with the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu in Ghana,   assured the Nigerian government that Ghanaians are peace-loving and that the government was committed to the safety and dignity of all legal residents within its borders.

“Convey to my brother, President Bola Tinubu, and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that Ghanaians are peace-loving and hospitable people,” President Mahama said.

“We share a historic bond with Nigeria. We have enjoyed excellent bilateral relations through the years. Our Government is committed to protecting the lives and properties of all who reside in our country, and we continue to urge all residents to be law-abiding.”

President Mahama reiterated Ghana’s commitment to peace and order, noting that Nigeria and Ghana are both strategic pillars of ECOWAS and share responsibilities for regional peace and integration. Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu was in Ghana in respect of the street protests in Ghana, requesting Nigerians living in Ghana to leave the country, acusing them of engaging in criminal activities such as  kidnapping and prostitution.

In addition, the Federal Government had earlier called for calm following the online circulation of videos of the protests in Accra, Ghana.

In a statement, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM, appealed to Nigerians in Ghana not to retaliate or resort to violence.

“Nigerians are not criminals. They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves, while those bad ones should be fished out to face necessary sanctions,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.

“Ghana and Nigeria are like Siamese twins. They are brothers and in the spirit of ECOWAS and regional integration, should continue to live in peace like brothers,” she said.

She urged Nigerians to disregard false claims of attacks on Nigerian businesses, saying that there was no verified evidence to support the rumours.

Similarly, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, had assured that Nigeria would resolve the issue diplomatically: “We will engage them diplomatically.”

It will be recalled that there were some organised protests last week in Ghana, following a string of criminal incidents in Ghana that the locals blamed on foreign nationals, especially Nigerians.

The protesters in Accra were seen carrying placards with inscriptions such as “End Kidnapping,” “End Fraud,” and “Our Health at Stake Due to Mass Prostitution,” suggesting that Nigerians were to blame for rising insecurity and moral decay in Ghana.

However, Nigeria and Ghana have a history of diplomatic tensions over immigration issues.

According to reports, in 1969, the Ghanaian Government under Prime Minister Kofi Busia expelled about 140,000 undocumented foreigners, including Nigerians under the Aliens Compliance Order. In a twist of history, Nigeria expelled more than 2 million immigrants in 1983, including Ghanaians, in what was known as “Ghana Must Go” saga.

It was on record that President Jerry Rawlings of Ghana and President Ibrahim Babangida in the late 1980s helped rebuild trust, established trade and cultural cooperation and commit both nations to the ideals of ECOWAS, including the free movement of people.

However, immigration tensions resurfaced in the 2020s when Ghanaian authorities enforced business regulations against Nigerian traders, which Abuja interpreted as targeted discrimination. Both countries traded accusations, though they stopped short of severing diplomatic ties..                However speaking on her meeting with President Mahama of Ghana, Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu described the meeting as “cordial and fruitful,” stressing the importance of continued dialogue and mutual respect.

“This encounter reaffirms the shared destiny of Nigeria and Ghana. We must never allow isolated incidents or misinformation to undermine the brotherhood our nations have nurtured over decades.”

Many Nigerians have described the diplomatic mission by the minister as timely in order to avoid its escalation. They believe that it will serve as a reminder to both nations and the region at large that unity, not division, is key to progress.

As calm slowly returns, all eyes remain on both governments to translate words into actions that preserve peace, protect lives, and prevent history from repeating itself.

Ghana Police losing public respect due to lapses in professionalism

Jantuah expressed concern about the deployment of soldiers in urban operations Jantuah expressed concern about the deployment of soldiers in urban operations

Private legal practitioner and a member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Kwame Jantuah, has raised alarm over what he describes as a growing loss of public trust and respect for the Ghana Police Service.

According to him, this trend is largely due to the police’s failure to uphold the law with professionalism, clarity, and consistency.

Reacting to recent attacks against journalists on TV3’s New Day on Friday, August 1, Jantuah said the inability of the police to assert their authority has led to frequent reliance on the military in matters that should ordinarily fall within the police’s domain.

“Sometimes I don’t understand why we invite the army into civilian operations. It goes to show that the police have lapsed in their responsibility as a service. Because of that, people don’t tend to respect the police,” he said.

He made specific reference to the demolition of McDan’s warehouse, questioning the presence of military officers at the site.

“The demolition of that building — did they need the army to be there? Did they foresee problems? And if they foresaw problems, isn’t it the police they should have brought there?” he asked.

Jantuah expressed concern about the increasing deployment of soldiers in urban operations, stating that the army has no responsibility in such areas unless under very special circumstances.

He argued that law enforcement duties within cities fall under the jurisdiction of the police, and involving the military suggests the police is no longer seen as capable.

“The police is not a police force. The police is a police service. The army is a force. And what is their responsibility? Protection. They protect the country,” he stated.

Citing policing practices in the United Kingdom, he indicated that the UK police officers often do not carry guns, yet command respect because of how they enforce the law.

“I always use the UK as an example. The UK policeman — don’t hold gun. The only thing he has is a baton on his side, his protective gear, and his identification camera. When he arrests you, he would quote the law to you before he arrests you. Does that happen here?” he asked.

He stated that until the police in Ghana are seen as true embodiments of the law, their authority will continue to be undermined, both by the public and by other state agencies.

“Unfortunately, the police service hasn’t been able to show the kind of reverence of the law they are supposed to handle. So, people don’t respect the police and hence, in situations like this, we call the army in,” he added.

According to him, the police as a service should aim to protect and serve, while the military, as a force, should only be called in under special circumstances.

The frequent use of the army, he argued, reflects a lack of confidence in the police.

Jantuah stressed that restoring professionalism and respect for the police is critical, not only to uphold the rule of law but also to prevent unnecessary military interference in civic matters.

‘Age is just a number’ – Dede Ayew celebrates Portia Boakye amid criticism over his own age

0

Dede Ayew (L) and Portia Boakye shared a hug at a special dinner with President Mahama Dede Ayew (L) and Portia Boakye shared a hug at a special dinner with President Mahama

Former Black Stars captain André Dede Ayew has taken to social media to celebrate Black Queens skipper Portia Boakye following Ghana’s bronze medal triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The 35-year-old, who has not been called up to the national team since Ghana’s group-stage exit at the 2023 AFCON, posted a short but telling message on Instagram that many believe reflects his own situation as much as it does his support for the Queens.

“Kudos to the captain, Portia Boakye. Age is just a number. Keep going strong,” Ayew posted on Instagram.

Boakye, 36, led the Black Queens to a 1-0 victory over Cameroon in the third-place playoff, helping Ghana win its first WAFCON medal since 2016.

Her leadership and experience have been widely praised, with fans hailing her as a symbol of resilience and longevity in Ghanaian football.

Ayew’s post, however, appears to be layered with deeper meaning.

For years, the former Olympique Marseille and Swansea City star has been under intense scrutiny from Ghanaian fans and pundits who believe his time with the national team is over.

Many called for his exclusion after a lacklustre AFCON 2023 campaign, where he featured minimally and failed to make an impact.

His omission from Ghana squads under new coach Otto Addo has sparked debate, especially given the team’s ongoing struggles with leadership and consistency.

While Ayew has remained largely silent on the issue, his message to Boakye seems to double as a subtle response to those who question the value of experienced players.

Whether intended as a direct response or not, Ayew’s words have reignited discussions around his future with the Black Stars.

UDS Student Sentenced To Life Imprisonment For Murder

0

Salifu Nko-nya, a 20-year-old Computer Science student at the University for Development Studies (UDS), has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Tamale High Court presided by Charles Acheampong after being found guilty of murdering a male colleague student over a female student.

The convict was the ex-boyfriend of the female student who had ended their relationship and was in a new relationship with the deceased, Mohammed Zakiu Wunpini, 19-year-old Pharmacy student of the University for Development Studies.

The incident, which occurred in September 2024 sent shockwaves through the university community when students found the deceased dead at an uncompleted building close to the university.

When the incident happened last year, the family of the deceased believed their son was a victim of armed robbery. However, subsequent investigations identified Salifu Nko-nya as the perpetrator.

CCTV footage from a nearby house captured the incident, showing the victim being pursued into an uncompleted building, where he fell and was stabbed multiple times.

However, during investigation, the police found the deceased phone under the bed in the room of the convict and when asked why he had Mohammed’s phone, he indicated that he kept it for safety.

Prosecutors, led by Senior State Attorney, Linda Anibrika, presented evidence from telecommunications companies indicating that Salifu Nko-nya took the deceased’s phone, removed the SIM card, and inserted it into his own device to impersonate him shortly after the murder.

When the convict was asked how he got access to the deceased phone, he indicated that he saw the deceased being chased by some persons and that the phone fell off the deceased pocket and he took it.

The convict reportedly sent several messages to the deceased’s family and friends, including one to a friend that he was in trouble and that some people wanted him dead.

He also impersonated the deceased and sent a break up message to his ex-girlfriend explaining that he wanted her to also have a feel of a breakup experience.

The jury after the entire proceeding returned a guilty verdict with a count of 6 to 1 in favor of conviction, leading to the sentencing.

Central North Police Command rolls out 24hour Economy security strategy

0

By Isaac Arkoh

Cape Coast, Aug 01, GNA – The Central North Regional Police Command in the Central Region has rolled out enhanced around-the-clock policing measures to support the government’s flagship 24-Hour Economy policy.

This plan includes a high police visibility with marked uniforms and equipment to reassure the public to conduct their businesses without fear.

Community policing will be intensified with stronger police presence, more frequent patrols and the deployment of additional officers to areas operating around the clock.

There will also be an enhanced police engagement with businesses, residents, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organisations and community representatives to help the police understand local concerns and develop effective strategies.

Above all, the Command will implement operational directives from the 24-Hour Economy Security Secretariat at Police Headquarters, to manage personnel deployment particularly during nighttime hours when crime rates typically rise.

Dr Ishmael Nii Amanor Dodoo, Director and Head of Innovation, Partnerships and Markets at the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat announced these measures during a security meeting at Assin Fosu.

The meeting, themed “Policing the 24-Hour Economy,” brought together District Commanders and police personnel from across the region to discuss the security requirements of the government’s 24-Hour Economy policy.

Interactive engagement facilitated the sharing of ideas, identification of security challenges and the development of collaborative strategies to safeguard round-the-clock economic activities.

The discussions largely emphasised the importance of personnel deployment, intelligence sharing, and strategic security planning as vital components of the policy’s implementation.

Dr Dodoo stated that the initiative seeks to enhance productivity, increase employment and modernise Ghana’s economic landscape by encouraging continuous business and public service operations.

He noted that economic growth often attracted criminal elements, making a strong security framework and coordination within the security agencies.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Abraham Acquaye, the Regional Police Commander, said understanding the security implications of the 24-Hour Economy remained critical to developing sustainable policing models that addressed specific challenges such as violent crime, cybercrime and communal conflicts associated with extended business hours.

DCOP Acquaye reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to ensuring public safety within the existing 24-hour police operations schedule.

However, he called for increased logistical support and additional personnel to boost operational capacity in line with the expanded policing demands.

Nutrifoods Ghana Limited, producers of Tasty Tom products, has announced the recall of all batches of its Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix in 210g and 400g cans due to incidents of bloating.

In addition to these, the recall also covers Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix in 380g and 1.05kg packaging.

The recall follows a directive from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), which acted in collaboration with National Security after it was alerted to reports of bloating in some products.

“Our attention has been drawn by the FDA and National Security to some incidents of bloating in Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix pouches and cans (210g and 400g),” Nutrifoods said in a statement issued on August 1. “We have therefore been directed by the regulator to issue this recall, whilst we investigate the root cause of the problem.”

Nutrifoods urged members of the public who may have purchased the affected products to return them to the company’s Tema office or any of its distributors across the country.

“Anyone who has a Tasty Tom pouch of 380gms and 1.05kg from one of these batches can drop it off at our Tema Office or with any of our distributors nationwide. Alternatively, you can contact us on 050 5384429 (Monday to Friday 8:00am — 8:00pm) • Email; [email protected].”

The company apologised for the inconvenience caused and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high product standards.

“We deeply regret any inconvenience caused to our consumers and trade partners because of this issue and recall,” the statement read. “We at Nutrifoods Ghana Ltd are committed to delivering high quality products meeting all the required stringent national food safety standards. We want to reassure our consumers and trade partners that we are doing our best to recover all affected products and replace them without difficulty.”

The company said the FDA has been inspecting its facility to ensure compliance with regulations.

The FDA has yet to release an official statement on the outcome of investigations into the cause of the bloating.
