Over $1m allegedly stolen from Cecilia Dapaah’s house raises eyebrows

0

The Co-Chairman of Citizens’ Movement against Corruption (CMaC), Edem Senanu, has said the alleged stealing of huge sums of money from the house of the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, “raises eyebrows.”

He said this when he reacted to the development in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM on Friday, July 21, 2023.

“Absolutely, first of all, the sums of money and the quantum raise eyebrows because we do know how much public officers are paid and ministers. We are not expecting millions of dollars and other currencies to just be easily accessible so that definitely raises eyebrows.”

“There is also the prudence of anybody deciding to keep that kind of money at home. Nobody who is very cautious about security would want to keep that kind of money and why would you want that kind of money when it could be much more secure elsewhere. So the prudence in that raises eyebrows,” he said.

Mr Senanu also said that the country had not codified illicit financial enrichment, an article under the AU Convention on the Prevention and Combating of Corruption, “in which debt would cover issues like lifestyle audits where when something like this comes up there is a suspicion that the sources of income could not justify the sums of monies being spoken about.”

He said that it was for the above reasons that questioning and discussions were needed on the matter.

The Chronicle Newspaper on Friday reported that two house helps of Cecilia Abena Dapaah and her husband, Daniel Osei Kuffour, are before an Accra Circuit Court, for allegedly stealing monies and items running into millions of Ghana Cedis.

The said monies were allegedly stolen from the couple’s room in their house at Abelemkpe, a suburb of Accra, in the Greater Accra region.

The two house helps of the Minister are facing charges before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly stealing an amount of $1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghanaian cedis and other personal effects at her residence in Abelenkpe, Accra, in October 2023.

Grid Fully Restored After Hours Of Blackout

0

The Transmission Company of Nigeria, has announced that the collapsed national grid has been restored following hours of a nationwide blackout on Sunday.

INFORMATION NIGERIA learnt that the power outage occurred on Sunday as a result of the grid collapsing for the first time in 2024.

However, TCN, in a statement released on Monday, stated that: “TCN initiated immediate restoration of the affected part of the grid, and presently, the grid is fully restored.

“Prior to the incident, the total generation on the grid was 3,901.25 MW at 08:00Hours, a little over three hours before the time of partial collapse.

“According to the National Control Center, NCC, the Internet of Things, IoT, revealed that just before the partial disturbance, which occurred at 11:21Hrs today, Sapele Steam & Egbin Substations lost a total of 29.32MW & 343.84MW at 11:20:14Hrs & 11:20:17Hrs respectively, totalling 373.16MW.

“This, combined with the current low power generation due to gas constraints, caused the imbalance leading to the partial system disturbance. Gas constraints continue to impact grid flexibility and stability.”

Upper East: We’re working to fix power challenges in Garu

0

The management of VRA/NEDCo in the Upper East Region says it is diligently working towards resolving the power supply challenges in some parts of the Garu district.

Following a severe rainstorm that damaged approximately 31 electric poles in the area, communities such as Akora, Woriyanga, Yakoti, and Kpikpira have experienced prolonged power outages.

Expressing their concerns, the local youth have demanded an immediate solution to this problem as they say it adversely affects their livelihoods.

However, Ishmael Ben Kwofie, the VRA/NEDCo Area Engineer, in a Citi News interview assured that despite the extensive damage caused by the rainstorm to their network, their team is working tirelessly to restore electricity supply to the affected communities by the end of this week.

“The extent of damage caused by the rainstorm was quite substantial, making it challenging to acquire the necessary materials for power restoration. It took several days before we could address the situation, but there are contractors currently on-site attending to the matter. Numerous communities were affected, including Akara with 11 damaged high-tension poles, Woriyanga with 9 poles, Yakoti with 7 poles, and Kpikpira with 4 poles. Additionally, several low-voltage poles were also damaged. Our priority is to restore the high-tension poles, followed by the low-voltage poles,” explained Ing. Kwofie.

He acknowledged the unfortunate delay in restoring power promptly due to the extensive damage and material requirements.

However, the team, he said, is determined to resolve the issue by the end of this week. Out of the approximately 613 damaged high-tension poles, 23 have already been restored, and they have dispatched steel poles to repair the remaining 9 damaged ones.

Ing. Kwofie appealed to the affected communities for patience while VRA/NEDCo works diligently to restore power supply, assuring them that the company will continue exploring innovative opportunities to reduce such failures in the future.

Furthermore, he expressed concern over the impact of the ongoing Bawku ethnic crisis on the company’s operations in the area.

He said contractors are currently hesitant to enter Bawku to address specific electricity supply challenges.

“We currently face a breakdown in Bawku, and despite contacting several contractors, none of them is willing to collect materials from our yard and commence work. This is a significant problem that has already affected our operations. However, we are actively working to mitigate this issue and hope that it does not prolong,” Ing. Kwofie lamented.

LG Autonomy Won’t Work, You Can’t Take Baby From Mother

0

Former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, insisted that Supreme Court judgement affirming local governments’ right to receive allocations directly from the federation account will not yield result.

Speaking on Sunday Politics, on Channels Television programme, Fayose said that even though he does not subscribe to state governors taking the funds of the LGs, it is difficult to separate both tiers.

The former governor emphasised that, despite the court verdict, state Houses of Assembly and the governors will always be a clog in the wheel of LG autonomy.

He said: “I am not a lawyer. I am a politician and by God’s grace today, I am an elder statesman.

“While I love and do not believe that any government should take local government funds, may I say to you very clearly this evening that you cannot take the baby from the mother?

“There is nobody that can become council chairman without a governor. Anybody telling you otherwise is wasting his time.

“Let me quickly remind you that the House of Assembly of every state controls the activities and checkmates the activities of the local government.

“While I was governor, I had the privilege of receiving money from Abuja. When you receive money from the account, some people manage the account. They are not politicians or the council chairman.

“Any council chairman who says ‘Money is coming to me, I will disrespect my governor’ the House of Assembly will tell you to go and disobey him inside your house.

“This is because you can never even be a council chairman without the governor standing up for you. The House of Assembly regulates your activities.

“Go to the council meeting on Wednesday or Friday, you will not find 10 per cent of the staff of the local government in the office.

“They don’t come. My name is Ayo Fayose and I want them to dispute this. They don’t come to work. When you make moves to bring them to book, both NULGE and all leaders of the local government will go and beg the Governor.

“They will be telling you, we will not vote for you. This is the way we operate at the local government. The state is more effective in administrative performance than the local government.

“At the local government, everybody comes to collect money. Even people have left some states. They live somewhere else and money just hit their accounts.”

“My wife’s sister is seducing me” – Man seek for advice as he shares his battle against temptation

0

He said that he’s been married for nine years and his wife’s sister has lived with them for six years, but he has never thought about her in an intimate way.

However, the man claimed that lately, she’s been trying to seduce him by wearing revealing outfits around the house.

According to him, the urge to move to her is growing daily and he does not know how to fight the temptation.

He wrote:

“I am not really good posting my issues online. But this time i need your advise. I have been married for 9 years now and my sister inlaw has been living with us( I, my wife and the kids) for the past 6 years now, although I am not always around.

I have never imagine any negative thoughts toward her. I always see her like my younger sister, i have been taken care of her. She is 28 years old and I can’t really says if she have a boyfriend cos I haven’t see one around her.

She is a boss in her working place but yet i foots all her bills in the house without bothering anyone, including my wife that is also a boss. Until of recent she started wearing seductive clothes around the house, Some how i started developing feelings for her As if she knows, she continues wearing those clothes and started showing more caring towards me.

I can’t believed that i am having feelings for my sister inlaw cos i am a disciplined man to the core. Even during university days girls do come to my apartment passed a night without molesting them. I am well brought up. But is like that disciplined man in me started degenerating as i began to see this girl in my dreams.

There was a night i returned from travelled, i started feeling the urge to go to her room. My wife almost caught me that night cos we lives in 3 bedroom, I have my own room, my wife have her own and my sister inlaw have her own room. So we sleep in separate rooms except some occasions my wife decided to stay in my room. That night i was pimping through her door.

I have been trying to control my feelings and I believed the reason why I have not sleep with her is because i am not always around and I also the fear of traditions implications of sleeping with sister inlaw . And my wife is not helping matters, she can leave both of us alone in d house and go to all night church program and the children will be sleeping.

I don’t really know what to do. Should I tell my wife so that we can get her accommodation or just let the sleeping dog be. Though I don’t really want her to leave cos is my wife and the children are alone in the compound. I just want to kill that urge before I return from travel.”

Demand for venture capital exceeds current supply

0

Percival Ofori Ampomah, General Manager of Venture Capital Trust Fund (VCTF) Percival Ofori Ampomah, General Manager of Venture Capital Trust Fund (VCTF)

According to research commissioned by the Venture Capital Trust Fund (VCTF) between 2019 and 2020, demand for venture capital in Ghana far exceeds the current supply.

For instance, the SME sector requires around US$15billion to meet its financing needs – a stark contrast to the US$70million available in venture capital funds.

The Fund’s General Manager, Percival Ofori Ampomah, acknowledged this significant gap, stating: “We currently do not even have 10 percent of the required capital. As a result, VCTF is aiming to secure US$120million by 2030 in order to establish a self-sustaining venture capital ecosystem”.

This highlights the VCTF’s strategy to address systemic issues and attract sustainable financing.

To achieve self-sustainability, VCTF projects that it will require an additional US$10million annually from government over the next few years.

Although VCTF has already received US$40million from the Ministry of Finance under the Ghana Economic Transformation Project (GETP) to establish new funds, the long-term goal is to secure a stable, permanent source of funding that ensures continuous support for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

One of the significant challenges VCTF faces is a preference among foreign investors to domicile funds in Mauritius rather than Ghana. This has resulted in a substantial portion of investment capital remaining offshore, despite being directed toward projects within Ghana.

Mr. Ampomah highlighted that over 90 per cent of VCTF funding currently comes from foreign sources, with local investors slowly gaining interest due to a greater understanding of venture capital and private equity.

Venture capital funds (VCF) are one of the main development finance tools pivotal in providing patient capital, fostering entrepreneurship and economic development, particularly in emerging markets where traditional financing may be scarce.

The Venture Capital Trust Fund was established under the Venture Capital Trust Fund Act 2004 (Act 680) in 2015. However, Mr. Ampomah explained that VCTF’s immediate focus is revising the Act to align it with the current economic landscape.

He explained the need for legislative reforms to update the Venture Capital Trust Fund Act, which has become outdated after two decades. For example, the current Act still references the National Reconstruction Levy, a funding source that was repealed years ago.

Hence, policymakers will be extensively engaged next year to push for changes that will create a more sustainable funding framework for the trust fund.

Ghana drops to 55th in Global Peace Index 2024

0

Ghana has seen a significant decline in its standing on the 2024 Global Peace Index (GPI), dropping to 55th globally from 51st in 2023 and a remarkable 40th in 2022.

The sharp fall in its peace ranking comes at a critical time as the country prepares for its December 7 elections, raising concerns about stability and the peacefulness of the upcoming electoral process.

Regional Setback in Peacefulness

Once ranked as the second most peaceful country in Sub-Saharan Africa, Ghana has now fallen to fourth in the region, overtaken by Mauritius, Madagascar, and Botswana.

This shift underscores mounting internal pressures and the challenges Ghana faces in maintaining its peaceful reputation.

Global Peace Index Insights

The Global Peace Index, an annual report produced by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), evaluates 163 countries, representing 99.7 per cent of the world’s population.

The index measures peacefulness across three core domains: societal safety and security, ongoing domestic and international conflict, and militarisation.

These factors are analyzed through 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators.

Urgent Need for Peaceful Elections

With the country’s GPI ranking in decline, there is a heightened need for a peaceful electoral process in the upcoming December elections.

The lower peace score points to growing concerns around democratic stability, localised conflicts, and emerging security threats, all of which could impact the integrity of the elections.

Broader African and Global Peace Trends

On a broader scale, Africa continues to struggle with peace, with the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region remaining the least peaceful globally.

Countries like Sudan and Yemen are ranked among the world’s ten least peaceful nations, reflecting a troubling trend across the continent.

Globally, the GPI report highlights a consistent 17-year decline in peace, driven by political instability, rising deaths from conflict, and an increase in violent demonstrations.

Despite these challenges, the report does show some positive developments, such as improved commitments to UN peacekeeping efforts.

Special economic zones key to industrialisation drive – Experts –

0

Ghana is betting big on special economic zones (SEZs) to drive industrialisation, boost exports and create jobs, even as experts call for ensuring the benefits are widely shared and integrated with local economies.

Findings from studies by the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) of the University of Ghana and Kiel Institute for World Economy (IfW) highlighted at the National Policy Forum on ‘Special Economic Zones: A Force for Industrialisation?’ point to the vital role SEZs can play in economic transformation, if implemented with supporting policies.

“Special economic zones epitomise the convergence of strategic planning, policy initiatives, entrepreneurial spirit and more. They offer a haven where businesses can thrive, unbound by constraints of conventional regulations,” said Dr. Humphrey Ayim-Darke, President-Association of Ghana Industries (AGI).

However, he cautioned that while SEZs offer “immense potential, they are not without challenges and controversies”. Fostering sustainable, inclusive growth requires addressing inherent issues, Dr. Ayim-Darke stated.

The studies underscored the need for investing in infrastructure within and around SEZs to facilitate business operations and attract investment. This can increase per capita consumption and reduce poverty levels for local communities.

Implementing inclusive policies to support small enterprises and promote gender equality in SEZ employment is also crucial for shared prosperity, the findings indicated.

Michael Oquaye Jr., CEO-Ghana Free Zones Authority, highlighted the tangible impacts SEZs are already having on industrialisation and job creation.

“In 2020, enterprises in Ghana’s free zones directly employed about 29,567 people. This number has risen to 35,399 by 2023 – a remarkable 19.7 percent increase, illustrating the zones’ significant contribution to employment,” Mr. Oquaye said.

He added that SEZ companies generate nearly 500,000 indirect jobs while capital investments in the zones increased from US$140million in 2020 to US$143million in 2023 after a pandemic-related dip. Export revenues from SEZs also grew from US$1.5billion to US$1.7billion over the same period.

To further drive SEZ growth and local integration, the Authority is promoting Ghanaian firms’ participation – with 36 percent of 258 licenced SEZ companies now wholly local-owned.

“The Authority has witnessed a surge in applications by companies in the service sector, employing digitalisation to export services and earn foreign exchange,” Mr. Oquaye noted.

Ghana has over 7,000 acres designated as SEZs, including the Tema Export Processing Zone and new sites like Adhenia. However, with Tema at full capacity, government is pushing Adhenia as its new industrial anchor.

Highlighting safeguards, Mr. Oquaye said the Authority is cracking down on abuse of SEZ incentives, with only two plastic raw material companies approved last year after allegations of violations.

“All free zone enterprises must comply strictly with regulations prohibiting unauthorized goods removal for use outside zones,” he warned, citing legal provisions for sanctions.

Looking ahead, improving data monitoring and enhancing educational opportunities are key to better evaluate SEZ impacts and equip workers for higher-paying SEZ jobs to improve wage equity.

Dr. Ayim-Darke emphasised the urgency of capitalising on SEZ opportunities, especially with the Continental Free Trade Area creating an integrated African market.

“We are at the crossroads of this era. One wonders how Africa will benefit if we do not take this opportunity seriously,” he stated. “I hope in the next era industrialisation will be actualised based on such research.”

Nepali sherpa becomes world’s second person to scale Everest 26 times

0

Kathmandu – A Nepali sherpa guide climbed Mount Everest for the 26th time on Sunday, hiking officials said, becoming the world’s second person to achieve the feat.

Pasang Dawa Sherpa, 46, stood atop the 8,849-m (29,032-ft) peak, sharing the record number of summits with Kami Rita Sherpa, said Bigyan Koirala, a government tourism official.

Kami Rita, who is also climbing on Everest now, could set another record if he makes it to the top.

Pasang Dawa reached the top with a Hungarian client, said an official of his employer Imagine Nepal Treks, a hiking company.

“They are descending from the top now and are in good shape,” the official, Dawa Futi Sherpa, told Reuters.

Sherpas, who mostly use their first names, are known for their climbing skills and make a living mainly by guiding foreign clients in the mountains.

Dawa Futi said a Pakistani woman, Naila Kiani, who also climbed the peak on Sunday, was the first foreign climber to summit Everest in this year’s climbing season, which runs from March to May.

This could not be independently confirmed as many foreign climbers are now headed for the peak, a day after the ropes to the top were fixed.

Kiani, a 37-year-old banker based in Dubai, had climbed four of the world’s 14 highest mountains before Everest, the Himalayan Times newspaper said.

Nepal has issued a record of 467 permits this year for foreign climbers seeking to reach the summit of Everest.

Each climber is usually accompanied by at least one sherpa guide, fuelling fears that a narrow section below the summit, known as the Hillary Step, could get crowded.

Everest has been climbed more than 11,000 times since it was first scaled by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953, with about 320 people dying in the effort, according to a Himalayan database and Nepali officials.

Francis Doku alleges Afua Asantewaa’s “light the city project” is a scam –

0

Media personality and entrepreneur Afua Asantewaa‘s initiative to light up cities in Accra, known as ‘Light Up The Streets,’ has come under scrutiny as Media Manager Francis Doku accuses her of using the project to secure personal funds.

In a controversial Instagram post circulating on social media, Doku expressed scepticism about Asantewaa’s intentions, asserting, “Afua Asantewaa is raising funds to help light up our cities. Very good idea. But what if after donating she forgets her Momo pin.”

Afua Asantewaa’s project aims to provide much-needed street lights to communities currently lacking them.

Speaking passionately about the initiative, she highlighted the dangers of communities residing in darkness.

Scheduled to kick off on Friday, March 1, 2024, the project has already faced criticism from Doku, who questions the integrity of Asantewaa’s fundraising efforts.

Undeterred by the controversy, Afua Asantewaa Aduonum has urged individuals to contribute either street lights or cash to support the cause, providing the contact number 0244913613 for donations.

Notably, this philanthropic endeavor follows Asantewaa’s unsuccessful Guinness World Records sing-a-thon attempt, adding a layer of intrigue to the unfolding narrative surrounding her charitable pursuits.

Planting for Food and Jobs had potential but poorly executed – Dr. Duffuor

0

Former Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffuor has described the government’s planting for food and jobs as an initiative with good potential but poorly executed.

He told host Julius Caesar Anadem on Ultimate FM’s Cup of Tea that while empowering small-scale farmers was a positive move; the program could have achieved much more if it had included the private sector, public agencies, and commercial farmers.

Dr. Duffuor argued that “farming is the backbone of Ghana’s economy and should be driven by innovation and modern techniques.

“Inputs must lead to higher output if there is sound management. But if the output is nothing to write home about, then it raises questions,” he said.”

He further criticized the program for failing to deliver meaningful improvements in productivity and farmers’ incomes.

“Farmers work so hard, but their incomes remain low because they are not being supported enough,” he said.

“If productivity were higher, their incomes would grow. Proper use of inputs should lead to better outcomes, but that hasn’t been the case,” the former Finance Minister added.

The Nana Akufo Addo administration spent GH¢2.9 billion on its flagship planting for food and jobs program between 2017 and 2023 alone.

The government of Ghana allocated GH¢3.3 billion to the second phase of the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) program, also known as PFJ 2.0.

The program aimed to ensure Ghana’s food security in grains like rice, maize, soya, and sorghum; Plantain, roots, and tubers like cassava and yam, as well as Broiler production and processing.

Acting Prevented Me From Marrying- Auntie Bee

0

Veteran actress Auntie Bee has revealed that her decades-long career in acting has brought her fame but little financial reward, and it prevented her from focusing on having children and getting married.

Speaking on Accra 100.5 FM’s midmorning show, Ayekoo Ayekoo, on Wednesday, the star of the hit TV series Effiewura reflected on her journey.

“Since childhood, I’ve loved acting and working in film so much that I didn’t learn any other trade or craft,” she said. “I couldn’t even concentrate on having children for the same reason,” she added, noting the challenges of being unemployed in film due to pregnancy and childrearing.

“It’s only fame that I got out of acting. I am recognized wherever I go. Acting did not give me marriage. Acting gave me nothing except a little money to spend with my children. Nothing. Well, the car I use up to today is what Rev Obofour or Nii Adotey Gyata gave me for my acting when I went to visit him,” she stated.

As 90min first revealed in November 2023, a number of English clubs have begun tracking 21-year-old Sudakov, who recently made his 100th senior appearance and racked up ten goals and six assists in all competitions this season.

Among his many suitors are Chelsea, where fellow Ukraine international and close friend Mykhailo Mudryk struts his stuff, and Sudakov told i that he would love the chance to reunite with the winger at club level.

“I was telling Misha [Mudryk] about how much I want to play in the Premier League and how it would be great to play in the same team,” he said. “Misha told me that I was not ready for the kind of pressure that happens in England and if I do come I need to be ready for that. But I am.”

Macbones Rumbles On April 15

0

Freezy Macbones

Thirty three-year-old UK-based Ghanaian boxer Freezy Macbones, who is posing to become one of the best boxers, is set to face Darryl Sharp on April 15 in London, live on BT Sports.

Many boxing fans who see Macbones as a talented boxer have tipped him to win his upcoming fight with Sharp by second round Knock Out.

Brixton-based Macbones is looking to take the sport by storm like Mike Tyson.

Born Seth Gyimah, the Ghanaian born boxer who moved to London from Ghana in 2012, has only been boxing for around six years – but has already created a menacing aura about him.

Ever since he became a boxer, Freezy has been drawing comparisons to Tyson, having utilised the ‘Peekaboo’ fighting style that ‘Iron Mike’ mastered during his active years.

In a recent interview with Sky Sports, he revealed that he has been turning the negativities caused by his amateur defeats into positive ones.

In fact, the heavy-hitting Knock Out artist even admitted that it makes him a ‘savage animal.’

He has shared clips of him in the gym with former WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua.

Freezy started boxing from 2017 at the age of 27 despite being told time and time again that he would “never make it”. He has surprised many people over the years with his sheer hunger and dedication to the sport. During his amateur days, he was working two jobs (kitchen porter & cleaner) day and night. This was difficult, as training was always at the forefront of his mind.

While training to be a success in the sport, Freezy also started a community boxing session for people in the local area to help everyone keep fit and healthy.

His first amateur fight at Miguel’s gym Freezy had a 25 second KO, following that when he started training at Double Jab, he had a 9 second KO, which is the quickest they had seen! Freezy was also a Haringey Gold Medal Champion in 2019.

As amateur boxer, Freezy managed to independently self-market himself to grow an astounding +350,000 followers across all social media platforms.

He has gone viral on social media many times, once where even the legends 50 Cent and Floyd Mayweather reposted one of his famous Knock Outs.

IMF Approves $600m For Ghana

0

It has emerged that the Government of Ghana has gotten the green light on the term agreement from the Official Creditor Committee, to pave the way for the IMF Executive Board to release the second tranche of the $3 billion extended credit facility of $600 million.

The Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, who confirmed the news to Bloomberg said ‘’We are receiving the draft term sheet today so I think we are about done.

“We will look into the details, but then it’s good enough for the IMF to continue with their work, so we’re in good shape.”

Initially, an agreement in principle is enough for Ghana to go to the IMF Board to seek approval of the 6th October 2023 Staff Level Agreement (SLA) for the first review under the $3 billion ECF program.

The IMF Board approval will, within days, unlock the second disbursement of $600 million.

Meanwhile, the IMF Africa Director, Abebe Selassie in October, lauded Ghana’s remarkable progress and affirmed that Ghana had done its part.

He explained that “I have to tell you that whereas it took something like nine months or more for Zambia to get the official creditor committee to be created, in Ghana’s case, it was fairly rapid, adding that, “Ghana has done its fair share and it’s for the creditors to take steps.”

On the other hand, the IMF’s Resident Representative for Ghana, Leandro Medina, said that discussions between Ghana and official creditors were showing “promising progress.”

‘’IMF Board approval is expected to further “trigger” World Bank Funding to the tune of $550 million. The Bank has pledged $300 million in budgetary support and another $250 million toward Ghana’s Financial Stability Fund.

These funds are all expected before the end of February 2024, with a strong and positive effect expected on Ghana’s reserve position and exchange rate stability’’ a Statement confirmed.

Enhancing Education System in Nigeria And The Roles of An Active Form Master

0

Education serves as the foundation for growth and development, playing a pivotal role in the progress of a nation. In Nigeria, the education system overseen by the Federal Ministry of Education is divided into Kindergarten, Primary education, Secondary education, and Tertiary education.

A key highlight of the Nigerian education system is the ‘School Management System,’ which monitors students’ cognitive behavior and academic progress, facilitating accurate tracking and reporting of costs for proper curriculum planning and increased efficiency of academic staff.

Despite these efforts, recent times have seen a decline in students’ educational quality at the graduation level, with the school management being one of the ailing issues.

Challenges in the Nigerian Education System

One of the major challenges plaguing the Nigerian education system is the lack of proper governance from school heads, leading to lax management of school boards and systems.

This issue particularly impacts students’ educational quality and behavior within the school environment. Primary school students, aged six to twelve, often harbor fear towards their teachers, leading them to be cautious and disciplined in their actions.

However, at the senior secondary school level, students at the adolescent stage may exhibit stubbornness and mischievous attitudes, making it challenging for them to accept discipline and correction.

Additionally, the prevalence of distractions in the digital age further hampers students’ educational progress during their school years.

With inadequate attention to students’ educational and behavioral development, they may end up learning nothing and negatively influence their peers.

Thus, there is a pressing need for a robust disciplinary framework to address these issues effectively.

The Role of the Disciplinary Committee

The Disciplinary Committee plays a crucial role in maintaining discipline and fostering a conducive learning environment within Nigerian secondary schools. Comprising five teachers and a body of students, the committee is responsible for monitoring students’ activities and behavior.

The disciplinary chairman leads the committee, overseeing the planning, development, and monitoring of all matters related to student discipline at the school.

The committee enforces three types of disciplinary actions:

1. Preventive Discipline: This approach focuses on preventing misbehavior by engaging students with educational and recreational activities.

2. Supportive Discipline: Measures are taken to assist students in regaining self-control and staying on track with their studies.

3. Corrective Discipline: When students do not adhere to classroom or school rules, corrective measures are taken to address their behavior.

The Vital Role of Form Masters

Form Masters, also known as class teachers, are essential figures in the Nigerian education system. They play a central role in socializing and supporting students in the same class.

At both primary and secondary levels, form masters actively contribute to the intellectual and social development of their students.

Form Masters provide individualized attention and guidance to students, helping them navigate challenges and nurture their academic growth.

Their active involvement in students’ lives ensures a personalized approach to education, leading to better learning outcomes and a positive school environment.

The Synergy between the Disciplinary Committee and Form Masters.

The collaboration between the Disciplinary Committee and Form Masters is vital for creating an environment conducive to learning and discipline.

Form Masters, being intimately involved with their students, can identify early signs of behavioral issues and promptly refer them to the Disciplinary Committee for appropriate interventions.

The Disciplinary Committee, on the other hand, works closely with Form Masters to understand the unique needs and challenges of each student.

Together, they develop tailored strategies to support students’ growth and maintain discipline in the school.

Conclusions

The Nigerian education system’s success in ensuring educational quality heavily relies on effective disciplinary measures and the active involvement of Form Masters.

By establishing a strong Disciplinary Committee and empowering Form Masters, schools can foster an environment that encourages academic excellence and positive behavior.

Proper governance, alongside the collaborative efforts of these two bodies, will lead to a transformed education system focused on providing a high-quality education to the students of Nigeria.

I Will End Your Career If You Mention John Mahama’s Name — Kevin Taylor Warns Kwabena Asante

As the 2024 general elections draw closer, Ghanaians find themselves inundated with political speeches that, to many, have become exhausting and redundant.

The well-dressed politicians, often delivering long-winded and intricate speeches, seem out of touch with the average citizen, who views the current administration as a “grabbing grabbing” government.

Transfer Update: Manchester City Eyes Croatia’s Josko Gvardiol as Potential Laporte Replacement.

0

Manchester City is reportedly eyeing RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol as a potential replacement for Aymeric Laporte, who has been attracting interest from Paris Saint-Germain. Gvardiol, a 21-year-old Croatia defender, has caught the attention of Man City scouts with his impressive performances in the Bundesliga.

Laporte has been a key player for Manchester City since joining the club in 2018. He has played a crucial role in the team’s success in recent years, helping them win the Premier League, the League Cup, and the Community Shield.

Paris Saint-Germain has reportedly shown interest in Laporte, with the French club looking to strengthen its defense ahead of next season. However, Manchester City is unlikely to let go of the Spanish defender unless they have a suitable replacement.

Josko Gvardiol has been on Manchester City’s radar for some time now. The Croatia international has impressed in the Bundesliga since joining RB Leipzig from Dinamo Zagreb in 2020. Gvardiol is a versatile defender who can play both as a center-back and a left-back, which makes him an attractive option for Pep Guardiola.

Manchester City is reportedly preparing to make a move for Gvardiol if Laporte leaves the club in the upcoming transfer window. The 21-year-old would add depth to Manchester City’s defense, and his potential to improve could make him a uable asset to the team in the long term.

Gvardiol’s style of play is similar to that of Laporte. He is a strong defender who is comfortable on the ball and can play out from the back. He is also good at reading the game and making interceptions, which is crucial in Guardiola’s high-pressing system.

However, RB Leipzig is unlikely to let go of Gvardiol without a fight. The German club ues the 21-year-old highly and is unlikely to sell him cheaply. Manchester City would have to make a significant offer if they are to convince RB Leipzig to part with their talented defender.

In conclusion, Manchester City’s potential move for Josko Gvardiol could be a significant transfer deal in the upcoming window. The Croatia defender has impressed in the Bundesliga and could be a suitable replacement for Aymeric Laporte if the Spanish defender leaves the club.

Kwami Sefa Kayi responds to Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah’s ‘hypocrite’ and ‘double standard’ remark

Kwami Sefa Kayi and Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah play videoKwami Sefa Kayi and Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah

Ghanaian media personality Kwami Sefa Kayi has responded to criticism from his colleague media personality Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, over alleged silence on pinpointing politicians who are engaged in illegal mining (galamsey).

Okatakyie had initially accused Sefa Kayi of hosting politicians and pundits on his show who are involved in galamsey, stressing that the Peace FM morning show host has failed to mention their names to the public.

In response, Sefa Kayi has also asked Afrifa to mention the people he claims are involved in galamsey activities.

“They are saying someone has taken me to a radio station and accused me that people who are into galamsey come to my show, but I have refused to mention their names.

“Meanwhile, he also couldn’t mention the names of such people. You claim you know people who are into galamsey come on my show, so mention the names. You claim you know them, so mention their names,” he said on his Kokrokoo show in a video shared on YouTube by Smart Ghana Update.

Watch Okatakyie said

Okatakyie holds that Sefa Kayi made a good call by using his Kokrokoo platform to campaign against the canker, which has devastated some forests and river bodies in the country.

Afrifa-Mensah, however, is unhappy with what he claims to be a display of hypocrisy on the part of Kwami Sefa Kayi, as he believes the host of Peace FM’s morning show is not directing his advocacy where he (Afrifa-Mensah) believes he should.

He alleges that the kingpins in the galamsey sector are regular pundits on Sefa Kayi’s show and that instead of generalizing the issues, Sefa Kayi should be bold enough to call out these persons when they appear on his show.

Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah claims that Sefa Kayi has relationships with some of the powerful persons involved in the menace and that he should mention their names and urge them to stop.

“I have seen the comments by Kwami Sefa Kayi and I believe it’s a good call. However, it is high time the senior journalists in this country stop the hypocrisy. I like Kwami Sefa Kayi, but the hypocrisy needs to end.

“All the big names in the galamsey canker appear on his show every morning. He hosts those people every morning. He knows them, so why can’t he tell them to their faces? There are journalists and politicians involved, and he knows them.

“We all respect him, but the hypocrisy must stop. If he knows that galamsey is bad, then he should be honest enough to name the people involved. So when they come on his show, he should tell them. He is friends with all the people involved,” he said on Angel FM.

Okatakyie’s claim comes on the back of Sefa Kayi’s caution that the nation risks raising rebels if the galamsey canker is not stemmed immediately.

CRM gains momentum with first dispatch of LPG cylinders –

0

The implementation of the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) has picked up speed with the recent dispatch of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders to exchange points.

On June 7, 2024, the Blue Ocean Bottling Plant in Tema, with a capacity to fill 1,200 cylinders per hour, sent out its first batch of cylinders.

The exchange points receiving these cylinders include Puma Retail Stations at East Legon, Madina, Nmai Dzorn, Kisseman, Agbogba, and Pantang.

The company’s management announced that more cylinders would be rolled out in the coming days across Accra and Kumasi, to establish 100 exchange centres by the end of the year.

“This is the first dispatch of cylinders from the Blue Ocean Bottling Plant since its construction in 2017 in Tema ahead of the implementation of CRM,” the management stated.

For easy identification and traceability, Blue Ocean cylinders are distinguished by their blue colour.

Meanwhile, the chiefs and people of the Ashanti and Western North Regions have shown readiness to welcome the CRM, a flagship initiative of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) for the distribution of LPG, particularly for domestic use.

This readiness follows months of intensive stakeholder engagements and public sensitization by NPA officers to increase awareness of the policy and secure public support.

This week, NPA officers from the Corporate Affairs and Gas Directorates conducted public engagements in Western North and greater Kumasi, visiting Sefwi Wiawso, Sefwi Bekwai, Bibiani, Anhwiawso, and Kumasi.

These activities culminated in a town hall meeting at the Prempeh Assembly Hall in Kumasi, chaired by Asonaba Boadu, Chairman of the Ashanti Regional Goil Dealers Association.

The event was attended by LPG dealers, GPRTU representatives, traditional authorities, market women, youth groups, and the general public.

In a speech read on behalf of the Ashanti Regional Minister by Oforikrom MCE Hon. Abraham Kwame Antwi, he praised the NPA for the CRM implementation and urged the public to embrace it, expressing satisfaction that one of the four bottling plants is located in the Ashanti Region.

Dr Joseph Wilson, Director for Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation at the NPA, delivered the keynote address on behalf of Chief Executive Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, stating that the project aims to achieve 50% LPG access for Ghanaians by 2030, up from the current 37%.

He emphasised that the CRM will enhance safety in LPG distribution and make it more accessible to the public.

Obed Kraine Boachie, Head of Gas at the NPA, provided a demonstration of the recirculation model and, along with the team, answered participants’ questions and addressed their concerns.

The NPA team included Dr Joseph Wilson, Saed Ubeidallah (Head of Quality Control), Obed Boachie (Head of Gas-Commercial), Mrs Betty Nana Adwoa Ofori (Ashanti Regional Manager, NPA), Mrs Eunice Budu Nyarko (Head of Consumer Service), Abdul Kudus Mohammed (Head of Communications), and Aku Yuiah (Head of Regional Coordination).

GFA – NRSA Road Safety Campaign launched to enhance road safety awareness

0

The Ghana Football Association through the GFA Foundation has joined forces with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) to launch a Road Safety Campaign aimed at raising awareness about road safety in the country.

The President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku and the acting Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Ing. David Osafo Adonteng, launched the campaign at the Headquarters of the Football Association on Wednesday December 4, 2024.

In his welcome address, General Secretary, Prosper Harrison Addo (Esq), underscored the GFA’s commitment to working closely with the Road Safety Authority to help safeguard lives by deploying several campaign strategies to reduce the carnage.

The campaign is under the theme: ” Stay Alive to bring back the love, Drive Safe for 3 Points”.

The GFA-NRSA Road Safety Awareness Campaign is a collaborative initiative between the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) aimed at raising awareness about road safety in Ghana.

Through the power of football, the campaign seeks to reduce road traffic accidents and fatalities, particularly targeting youth and football fans, using football-related events, public service announcements, and educational outreach.

The GFA has put all its football products and its related platforms, channels and logistics at the disposal of the National Road Safety Authority to use for effective road safety education and awareness for the greater good of the Ghanaian people.

The partnership seeks to promote road safety awareness and reduce traffic accidents and fatalities in Ghana, especially among young people and football fans and clubs.

As part of the initiative, the GFA and NRSA will roll out a series of activities, including driving refresher courses for football clubs, branding GFA vehicles with the NRSA logo, and targeted awareness campaigns for football fans and communities. Educational programs for young footballers focusing on road safety and responsible behaviour will also be organised.

It also aims to utilize football as a platform to spread road safety messages among players, football fans and the communities through various media and events.

Ghana Football Association President, Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku expressed his delight about the partnership and emphasised the importance of collective effort, especially from football clubs, to ensure the campaign’s success.

“This partnership is mutually beneficial. It concerns everybody here and beyond, and it’s the reason all of us must pay attention to this campaign and go out as proud ambassadors of this road safety campaign,” President Simeon-Okraku said

“We will do whatever it takes, using our football products, football space, and our social media presence as proud ambassadors to end road accidents. Let us use our football vehicle to the best of our ability and show our friends from the National Road Safety that indeed football can make a change.”

The acting Director-General David Osafo Adonteng revealed the alarming and disturbing statistics surrounding road accidents and urged football clubs and players to serve as road ambassadors.

“The statistics are alarming, and the human cost is heart-wrenching. It is our collective responsibility to act decisively and creatively to reduce these incidents, save lives, and foster a culture of responsibility on our roads,”

“Every year, thousands of lives are lost on our roads, leaving families and communities devastated, but we believe that together, we can make a difference. This partnership reflects the power of collaboration in addressing national challenges.”

The GFA Foundation will engage with its internal stakeholders and partners such as all members of the football association including Men and Women Premier and Division One League clubs on the road safety campaign.

During football matches itself, road safety educational materials will be distributed to raise awareness and during match halftimes, spectators will be sensitized through the central public address system and through one-on-one engagements at vantage points at the various stadia.

A Defensive and Refresher Drivers’ Training for all drivers of GPL, WPL, Division One League Clubs, GFA Staff and partners was held at the Football Association Headquarters.

The event brought together officials of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), St. Johns Ambulance, Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) and the Ghana Fire Service.

The two entities have agreed to use the power of football to create awareness and spread road safety messages to reduce road traffic accidents and fatalities.

It is expected that this campaign will help to reduce the carnage on our roads drastically.

Nollywood Actors Are Underpaid– Actor Cries

0

Deyemi Okanlawon

Nollywood actor, Deyemi Okanlawon says the major challenge for actors in their movie industry is remuneration.
According to him, actors in the Nigerian movie industry are criminally underpaid.

Okanlawon stated this during an MTV Base Africa program.

“I think [Nollywood] actors are not being paid enough. And the other hand, we are not financially literal enough to use what we do have and maximize it to protect ourselves in the future,” the Dailypost quoted him.

Nollywood is currently the most thriving movie industry on the African continent and one may think that actors are doing very well and are being paid very well but Deyemi says no, that is not the case.

Another actor, Etim-Effiong collaborated with Deyemi’s claim saying, “I also think that the way the industry works, it doesn’t provide enough for the actors to work with both financially and otherwise.

“For example, I don’t think actors are given enough time to prepare for their roles. I don’t think actors are given enough time even to work on themselves,” he added.

Lawyer files injunction on government’s T-bills borrowings

0

Private legal practitioner, Jonathan Amable has filed an injunction application at the Supreme Court seeking an immediate halt to government’s borrowing on the treasury bills market.

The plaintiff in the writ as sighted by Citi Business News is demanding that government and all its agents be stopped from issuing treasury bills to finance government business due to the failure of the government to seek parliamentary approval for such an issuance.

Jonathan Amable argues that, the action by government is contrary to provisions in the 1992 constitution.  He further avers that the development if not prohibited will continue to have dire effect on the economy.

The defendant in the case is the Attorney General of the Republic of Ghana. The injunction application is also asking the Supreme Court to cite the action by the Ministry of Finance and Bank of Ghana as unconstitutional.

“That the consequence of the relevant borrowing contracts being conducted without the requisite parliamentary approval makes them liable to be declared void for unconstitutionality and such a consequence will be made more dire by the fact that the holders of the offending debt instruments include banks, savings and loans companies micro-finance companies, asset management companies, insurance companies, pension funds and ordinary Ghanaians. Accordingly, the unconstitutional conduct of the state potentially jeopardises the entire Ghanaian financial sector and hard-earned capital of the investing public”, the application read in part.

‘Charge 5gh & 10ghc as gate fees so that stadium can be full’ – Hon. Kwabena Agyepong advises Kotoko mgt

0

Gone are the days when Ghana football fans used to rush to the Stadium to watch Ghanaian Premier League games.

I remember those days when football fans showed up at the Stadium very early in the morning to stand in long lines to purchase tickets for a game that will kick off 8 hours later. Tickets were always hard to come by for football games in Ghana.

I also remember the days when Ghanaian Football fans were willing to pay extra money by purchasing their tickets on the black market to enable them to watch a Ghanaian Premier League game at the stadium.

Fixtures between Hearts of Oak and Kotoko especially attracted very huge crowds to the stadium in the past. Unfortunately, that is not the case in Ghana anymore.

It’s at the back of low stadium attendance that Hon. Kwabena Agyepong, former general secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party [NPP], has admonished the management of Asante Kotoko to charge 5gh & 10ghc as gate fees so that stadium can be full.

Actor Jim Iyke has called for prayers for his son on his Instagram page.

According to the controversial actor, Jim Iyke, it takes a community to raise a king so he needs prayer from people for him,

Celebrating his birthday with an epistle, Jim Iyke wrote thus:

HAPPY EARTH STRONG “PETIT PAPA”.
THE REAL-LIFE “BOSS BABY”

YOU’RE CUT FROM AN ALTOGETHER DIFFERENT CLOTH. YOU’RE QUIET CONFIDENCE, INDIVIDUALITY, NATURAL FLAIR AND STYLE, INNATE INTELLIGENCE AND “OLD MAN” WAYS LEAVE PEOPLE INTRIGUED. BUT ITS YOUR RUTHLESS WIT, TENACIOUS PROTECTIVENESS OF YOUR LOVED ONES, EVER INQUISITIVE, INTENTIONAL MIND AND UNCANNY ABILITY TO READ A ROOM, FOR ONE SO YOUNG, THAT AWES ME DAILY.

I’VE BEEN A SUPERFAN, OBSESSED CHEERLEADER, FRIEND, FATHER, TUTOR AND SOMETIMES STUDENT SINCE YOUR BIRTH.
THEY GROW FAST, THEY SAY. WHEN THEY GROW WELL AND DEFINE THEIR PATH EARLY ITS EASIER TO LET GO EVEN WITH A HEAVY HEART.

THEY SAY “FATHERS PREPARE SONS TO MEET THE WORLD. “

I SAY THE WORLD MUST PREPARE TO MEET MY “PETIT PAPA”.
AND YET, THE WORLD IS NOT READY.

I SAY LION NO DEY BORN GOAT.

GOD HAS OVER-BLESSED YOU ALREADY.

How my mum’s death crashed my two marriages, made me obsessed with my three kids – Jim Iyke spills

Kemi FIlani recalls that last year, Jim Iyke has for the first time revealed that he has been married twice but they failed, adding that he now has three kids.

The 45 year old movie star made the revelation in chat with Chude Jideonwo monitored by Kemi Filani News.

According to him, he is always strategic and very unpredictable and that is why the media and no one know about his marriage, when it failed and his three kids.

“I have failed many times. I have had failed marriages, I have three beautiful kids, so how are you gonna know cos of my strategic pattern. Even people that live in my space don’t know…Even my sisters call to hear from me, even my PAs don’t know stuffs. I keep everyone on their toes with my level of unpredictability, i hate being figured out…once you figure me out, I have nothing else to offer, I refuse to be figured out and tamed”

On why his two marriages failed, Jim Iyke said “I suffered a loss. My mum died. She was my best friend and business strategist. …she is so smart that it is ridiculous…it was a relationship based on friendship and mutual respect….she always had the right words and advise to me….I lost all that when she died, there was a spirituality and connection that I lost after she died….we were so close that it took them 72 hours to inform me of her death…I am a product of love, my parents were so inlove with each other so her death shattered my dad too….their kind of relationship opened my eyes to the kind of marriage I wanted too….”

“I didn’t grieve all through the process of her death and burial…but by the time i started to grieve, my wife became pregnant with my first son and i wasn’t as loving as I should be…..i lost my sense of humor and the lion in me so she suffered for that…i became an obsessive dad after my son arrived…i took all my love and care on our son and abandoned her instead…I was an excellent dad but horrible husband so after a while she left, she said she couldn’t find the man she married anymore and we quit but still friends….” he stated

‘To heal, I had to visit different countries for weeks, from Gambia, to Argentina, Moscow etc ….” Jim Iyke revealed.

“There is no need to throw stones at every dog that barks at you” – Stonebwoy –

0

TGMA Artist of the Year for 2024, Stonebwoy recently addressed an escalating conflict with media investor Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu, who has filed a police complaint against him.

In a discussion with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz, Stonebwoy emphasized the importance of choosing battles wisely, stating that not every criticism or attack warrants a response.

He likened dealing with detractors to handling barking dogs, noting that while some may require attention, others can be ignored.

“You don’t bark back at every dog that barks at you. You don’t throw stones at every dog barking at you. But some dogs you have to, you know, deal with.”

“We started by saying how reputations began. There are some that you cannot leave out because of who is saying it and the kind of agenda that is behind it,” he added.

However, Stonebwoy also acknowledged that certain criticisms, particularly those stemming from specific individuals with agendas, must be addressed to protect his reputation and brand.

“From all the stuff I’ve said today, listen to it clearly and look at the build-up. It tells you that there is a bigger plan for their antics. However, I can only stand and state my truth. This is as simple as that.

“Like I said, you can’t just be following just everybody. On Twitter, people overdo it.”

Stonebwoy hinted at a larger strategy aimed at provoking him into reacting, emphasizing the need to discern genuine concerns from malicious intent.

He urged people to evaluate criticisms objectively rather than engaging in excessive and unproductive social media exchanges.

“This is supposed to be taken seriously and cleaned. I implore you to pick up the tweet and read them, then you can understand the level it is at and therefore the need to clean up a very honourable brand as Stonebwoy,” he added.

In urging netizens to read and understand the context of tweets and criticisms, Stonebwoy highlighted the importance of maintaining a positive image and encouraged constructive feedback to help him improve and safeguard his brand.

2000 Nurses Seek Greener Pastures Abroad — Moh |

0

About 2,000 nurses working in state and mission health facilities in the country have migrated abroad in recent years, the Ministry of Health has said.

At least, 1,400 of the emigrant nurses worked under the Ghana Health Service (GHS), while the remaining 600 worked at facilities of the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG).

The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, who said this when he took his turn at the Minister’s Press briefing in Accra yesterday, did not, however, indicate the period the migration happened.

He said the situation had not significantly challenged work at health facilities.

“We are getting very serious distress messages from the facilities that if we don’t bring new ones, they can’t work.

We are managing the situation,” the minister added.

He said although the phenomenon of health workers’ migration was a global occurrence, the MoH was working closely with the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations to streamline the migration policy to address current and future emerging issues.

Mr Agyemang-Manu, who focused on three main areas of achievements —policies, strategic plans, collaborations and legislations; human resource for health achievements and national E-health project, and health infrastructure projects, added that 636 nurses and midwives specialists were trained from 2019 to 2022, while 888 senior medical specialists also received training in various areas.

On recruitment, he said about 152,472 were employed from 2017 to 2022.

Achievements

Mr Agyemang-Manu mentioned the establishment of a vaccine institute in the country, the designation of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in August this year as a regional centre of regulatory excellence in vaccines regulatory oversight in Africa by the African Union Development Agency and Drugs Laboratory of the FDA’s Centre for Laboratory Services and Research attainment of a WHO-Prequalified Quality Control Laboratory status, the first in the ECOWAS region.

Under the national E-health project, Mr Agyemang-Manu said the ministry had since 2017, deployed an electronic patient record system as part of a national digitalisation agenda for the health sector to improve access to patient data at the point of care, improve claims management and systems harmonisation.

Ongoing projects

The minister further mentioned the construction of eight hospital projects which include the Upper West Regional Hospital, the Ga East Municipal Hospital, the Twifo Praso Hospital, the Tepa District Hospital, the Nsawam District Hospital, the Asante Akim Hospital, the Kumasi Regional Hospital and the Salaga District Hospital.

Others are the construction and equipping of phase two of the University of Ghana Medical Centre, completion of seven district hospitals and integrated IT systems in the country; construction, retooling and equipping of four selected health facilities in the Eastern Region; major rehabilitation of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, construction and rehabilitation of treatment and holding centres and construction of Community-Based Health Planning Services (CHPS) at selected locations in the country.

Other ongoing projects include the rehabilitation of the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital phase two; design, construction and equipping of the Eastern Regional Hospital, rehabilitation of the Effia Nkwanta Hospital, the construction of a new Western Regional Hospital and the construction of a urology and nephology centre of excellence at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

This Silver Swan Automaton Is a 250-Year-Old Mechanical Marvel

0

Created in 1774 to impress royalty and their guests, the Silver Swan automaton remains an impressively intricate mechanical wonder that continues to captivate audiences.

Built for royalty that ended up changing their minds, the Silver Swan is one of the most famous automatons in history. It was put together at the Mechanical Museum of James Cox, a London jeweler and 18th-century entrepreneur, using an internal mechanism designed by inventor John Joseph Merlin. The chased, repoussé silver body of the swan conceals three clockwork mechanisms that control a music box, a pool of glass with swimming silver fish, and the life-like movements of the majestic bird’s neck and head. Seeing the Silver Swan in action, it’s easy to forget that this mesmerizing mechanical marvel is no less than 250 years old.

Photo: Andrew Curtis / The Silver Swan, Bowes Museum / CC BY-SA 2.0

“I watched the Silver Swan, which had a living grace about his movement and a living intelligence in his eyes – watched him swimming about as comfortably and unconcernedly as it he had been born in a morass instead of a jeweler’s shop – watched him seize a silver fish from under the water and hold up his head and go through the customary and elaborate motions of swallowing it…’”American novelist Mark Twain once wrote about the Silver Swan.

The solid silver swan weighs between 25 and 30 kilograms (55 – 66 lbs), and has more than 700 components, excluding screws and fixings. It features 99 silver leaves, 113 silver neck rings, and 141 glass rods.

The Silver Swan was the sensation of the 1867 Paris International Exhibition, where its life-like movements and sweat-inducing price tag – 50,000 francs (over $200,000, by today’s money) – left everyone gobsmacked. Five years later, collectors John and Josephine Bowes were able to buy it for a 10th of its original price and add it to their namesake museum.

To this day, the incredible automaton remains the star of the Bowes Museum, but, it is starting to show its age. The Guardian reports that the Silver Swan is in dire need of restoration and is currently more a sculpture than an automaton.

“It does work but when it moves the neck has to be supported,” curator Vicky Sturrs said, adding that the museum is optimistic that it will secure the funding required to repair this incredible piece of old technology.

Need for mindset change in Ghana

0

Ghana, since its independence, has made significant strides in various sectors, including education, health, agriculture, and infrastructure.

However, the country’s progress has often been hampered by systemic challenges.

For Ghana to achieve true and sustainable development, a transformation in mindset is crucial—from leaders at the helm of affairs to the ordinary citizens. This change must cut across all sectors if we are to witness lasting progress.

Leadership:

Leadership is central to the growth and development of any nation. In Ghana, leadership must go beyond the traditional notion of holding a position of power.

Leaders, whether in politics, business, or civil society, must have a vision that reflects the aspirations of the people. They should lead with integrity, transparency, and accountability.

Unfortunately, the mindset of “business as usual,” which often perpetuates corruption and mediocrity, continues to hold back progress.

A mindset shift is required where leaders prioritise the collective good over personal gains.

If public office holders adopt a selfless approach and are committed to creating policies that foster long-term development, Ghana can see immense improvements.

The power to effect change lies in visionary leadership, where leaders embrace innovation and uphold their duty to the people with integrity.

Development:

Development is not the responsibility of leaders alone. Ordinary citizens must also change their mindset if we are to witness growth in all sectors.

Too often, there is an attitude of dependence on the government to provide every solution. While governments are responsible for creating enabling environments, citizens must see themselves as active participants in development.

For instance, in sanitation, the “someone else will clean it up” mindset persists. Ghanaians must recognise that clean and sustainable environments begin with personal responsibility.

Likewise, the attitude towards public property, taxes, and even traffic regulations reflects a larger societal issue—one of nonchalance and disregard for collective good.

Innovation and Change:

The world is evolving, and technology and innovation play a critical role in development. Ghana must keep pace with this global trend, but this requires a mindset that is open to new ideas and change.

For too long, the country has been bogged down by traditional ways of thinking and doing things.

In sectors such as agriculture, education, and health, innovation can lead to exponential growth, yet there is often resistance to adopting modern techniques or embracing new technology.

A shift towards a progressive, innovative mindset will foster an environment where creativity thrives. Schools must not only teach students to memorise facts but also encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation.

In agriculture, farmers need to adopt modern technologies and sustainable practices to increase productivity. In health, embracing telemedicine and advanced diagnostic tools can significantly improve healthcare delivery.

Patriotism and National Interest:

One of the most profound mindset changes required for Ghana’s development is a renewed sense of patriotism.

Every citizen must feel a responsibility toward the country’s progress. The “what’s in it for me” attitude must give way to a more nationalistic approach where the collective good is prioritized.

From protecting the environment to supporting local businesses, Ghanaians must cultivate a sense of pride in their country.

For instance, promoting Made-in-Ghana products can not only boost local industries but also foster national economic growth. Patriotism should not be a passive emotion but an active duty where every citizen feels accountable for the country’s development.

Collaboration:

For development to be holistic, a change in mindset must also happen across sectors. Too often, there is a disconnect between the various sectors of the economy.

Collaboration between government agencies, private enterprises, and civil society is essential for development.

If we want to witness real growth in sectors like health, education, and industry, there needs to be a deliberate effort to work together for a common goal.

Ghanaians must move away from the silos of self-interest and focus on what unites us in our drive for development. When sectors collaborate, they can pool resources, share expertise, and create synergies that lead to more effective solutions.

Ghana’s development will not come from external aid or quick-fix policies but from a fundamental change in the mindset of its people.

From the leaders who make critical decisions to the ordinary citizens who are the backbone of the country, everyone has a role to play.

Embracing a mindset of accountability, innovation, patriotism, and collaboration is the key to unlocking the true potential of the nation. If we can cultivate these values, Ghana will be poised for sustainable development across all sectors.

NPP Primaries: I have served you well, give me another chance – Trobu MP to delegates

0

Accra, Jan 24, GNA – Mr Moses Anim, the Member of Parliament for Trobu Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, has called on delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to give him another chance to deliver more development for the constituents.
He said he had served the Constituents since voted for in 2020 and deserved to continue as MP for the area.
He made the appeal in an interview with the media, in Accra, on Wednesday.
Trobu Constituency is one of the strongholds of the NPP within the Greater Accra Region.
In 2020, for instance, the Party, led by Mr Moses Anim, won the seat with over 25,000 votes.
He polled 63,580 votes as against the National Democratic Congress candidate, Mr Emmanuel Yaw Agbesi Gbedemah, who garnered 35,182 votes.
However, as the NPP goes to the polls on Saturday, January 27, 2024, to elect its parliamentary candidates for the 2024 elections, Mr Anim is fighting to maintain his candidature.
He faces stiff opposition from two aspirants – Madam Gloria Owusu and Mr Edward Lincoln Nii Adotei Addo.
Mr Anim, who is also the deputy Minister of Fisheries and Acquaculture, urged the delegates to look at the work he had done so far in a space of four years and retain him, saying his “work within the Constituency is unmatched”.
According to him, the Trobu Constituency, which used to be regarded as a rural district no longer belonged to that class because it had witnessed massive social infrastructure under his tenure and the NPP government.
“I have managed with my share of the Common Fund, and support from the government and donors as well as from my resourcefulness to provide health, education, water and sanitation and road infrastructure to open up the constituency to the rest of the country,” Mr Anim touted.
Health facilities such as the Amamorley hospital, the Atiato, Pokuase Anglican and Amanfrom clinics, had all received assistance, he said.
“Again, I have donated clinical equipment to the Ga North Municipal Hospital at Ofankor, power plant to the Ga North Municipal hospital, patient monitors to Amasaman hospital and a printer and scanning machine to the Ga North Health Directorate,” he said.
In education, Mr Anim said huge projects had been executed under his tenure.
These include provision of furniture for basic sand senior high schools, including the St John’s Grammar SHS, provision of nursery blocks with GETFUND support at Afiaman Basic school, Abensu, Nii Otoo Kwame Basic school, Ofankor MA Basic school and a nursery complex at Usman Bon Afan Basic school, six classroom blocks at the Sylvanus Basic school at Pokuase, Atiato basic school and Amamorley Basic school.
The rest are one storey six classroom block at the St Joseph’s Basic school, M7 Basic School, while nursery blocks at the Ayawaso Quarry Basic School and Asofan Basic School, were ongoing.
In the area of roads, the MP said the Constituency had also witnessed an improvement.
He urged the delegates to look at those works, honour him by retaining him as the NPP parliamentary candidate come Saturday, Januray 27, 2024, to retain the seat for the Party.
“I have served the constituents very faithfully and efficiently by providing various development projects to ease the burden of the people and I think I deserve to continue as MP,” he said.

Biakoye District Faces Transition as Chief Executive Resigns

0

Madam Millicent Kabuki Carboo, the Biakoye District Chief Executive (DCE) in the Oti Region, has resigned.

A press release by the Public Relations Unit of the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development confirmed the resignation.

Madam Carboo was unanimously endorsed as the DCE in 2021 after a failed attempt in 2017.

The DCE’s last duties performed few days ago included donation of mono desks to the District Education Directorate, marked ‘My First Day at School,’ commissioning renovated Tapa-Akaa Yaw D/A Primary School, paid working visit to the Biakoye Model Girls JHS and commissioning of the Bowiri Kwamikrom R/C Primary School blocks.

Although attempts by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to reach the DCE proved futile, close sources could not confirm the reasons for her resignation.

The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development noted that the resignation was in line with the provisions under Section 20(3)(c) of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).

The Ministry noted that Mr. Edward Owusu, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Atebubu-Amantin Municipal Assembly in the Bono East Region has also resigned.

It said the respective Regional Ministers had been directed to act as District Chief Executives of the two Assemblies until substantive replacements were appointed by the President.

Alan Fires Ken Ofori-Atta –

0

Former Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has revealed that he and a few state officials defended the decision by the government to seek a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 2021, while Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta was nowhere to be found.

Kyerematen made this revelation during an interview on Accra-based UTV on Tuesday, September 26 a day after he broke away from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He questioned the confidence of Ofori-Atta in defending the decision, saying, “Did you hear from the Finance Minister, having the confidence to defend it?” This contrasts with comments made by Kyerematen in July when he was campaigning to be the NPP’s flagbearer in the Greater Accra Region, stating that if Ghanaians had listened to him, the country wouldn’t have gone to the IMF.

In his latest interview, Kyerematen also implored supporters of other political parties to vote for him in the 2024 presidential elections while retaining their allegiance to their party’s Members of Parliament.

This development is sure to create some unease within the New Patriotic Party as Ofori-Atta’s competence as Finance Minister comes under scrutiny.
It remains to be seen how the party hierarchy will manage this delicate situation in the coming days.

Govt is ready to assist Christian Atsu’s burial

0

President Nana Akufo-Addo has assured the family of Christian Atsu that government is ready to support the burial of the former Ghana winger.

Atsu, who made over 60 appearances for the Black Stars, has been confirmed dead following an earthquake that struck the country two weeks ago.

With the 31-year-old’s one week expected to be held on March 4, President Akufo-Addo on Monday, February 27, held a meeting with the family of the deceased winner to discuss matters relating to the funeral of the player.

At the meeting, President Akufo-Addo stressed that government will support the date and any other decision on the funeral that will be decided by the family.

President Akufo-Addo said he has instructed the chief of staff at the office of the President, Madam Akosua Frema Osei Opare, to liaise with the family, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports to ensure that the decision of government is executed.

“Our responsibility is to give you as much support as we can. We can never erase the loss of this very brilliant man, but there it is. I always console myself with the fact that, at the end of the day, no matter the circumstances, the Almighty will call each one of us one by one, and perhaps, that was his [Christian Atsu] destiny that he is called in this tragic way,” President Akufo-Addo said.

“The Ghanaian people must express their appreciation for the work that he did for our nation and the contribution he made to the development of the game and to the development of sports in general.

“So, I have asked the chief of staff who unfortunately is outside Accra today, to make sure that we organize a state-assisted funeral for Christian Atsu, depending on the date that you the members of the family and GFA will select,” he added.

President Akufo-Addo noted that the state will do everything within its power to ensure that Christian Atsu is given a dignified exit.

He asked the family to work closely with his office in choosing a date for the funeral because he would like to personally be present at the funeral to pay his last respects to the late Black Stars player.

Christian Atsu’s body arrived in Ghana on February 19 from Turkey and has been in the morgue since.

The date for the funeral will then be announced.

Atsu is famously remembered for winning the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] best player of the tournament.

Bawumia is ready to announce his running mate – Miracles Aboagye –

0

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the Director of Communications for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s Campaign, has indicated that the Vice President will soon announce his running-mate for the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Mr Aboagye says that Dr. Bawumia has already made his decision regarding who he wants to partner with for the elections, implying that an announcement is imminent.

His remarks come amidst speculations within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and among political analysts about the delay in Dr. Bawumia naming a running-mate.

However, Mr Aboagye, speaking in an interview with Citi FM on Thursday, April 25, stressed that Dr. Bawumia is well within the appropriate timeframe to make such an announcement.

To support his stance, Aboagye pointed to the example of then candidate Nana Akufo-Addo, who selected Dr. Bawumia as his running-mate in August 2008 for that year’s election.

This historical precedent, he argued, shows that the timing of naming a running-mate can vary and is not necessarily a cause for concern.

“We are very much within the timeline. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was elected barely six months ago and so we still have time. If you recall his nomination in 2008 was done somewhere in August. So for us in the NPP we are very much within our timelines.”

“It can be tomorrow, it can be next week, it can be next month, it can be three days from now. The flagbearer at this point is very clear in his mind who his running-mate is going to be and when he is ready he is going to announce that,” he said.

Additionally, Mr Aboagye stated that Dr. Bawumia’s main competition in the upcoming elections is not his running-mate, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, but rather the flagbearer of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama.

He emphasised that Prof. Naana Jane is not a significant concern for Dr. Bawumia in terms of electoral competition.

“Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is in a contest with John Mahama. They are the two people who are going to be on the ballot paper and these are people we have seen before. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s competition, his contest is the former president,” he added.

MPs must ensure anti-LGBTQ+ bill addresses spread of HIV

0

The Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene, is anticipating that the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, if passed will help to address the spread of HIV.

He raised concerns about homosexuality and indicated that HIV prevalence among homosexuals is higher than other general diseases.

The Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission described homosexuality as a major problem emphasizing the need for a holistic approach to addressing it.

“I want all Ghanaians to also agree with us that the issue of men having sex with men and even women also having anal sex with women is a major problem. Because many men who have sex with men have female partners and HIV prevalence in that group is about 22%, which is even higher than the general MSM prevalence. And so there is potential for their partners who have partners within the general population to spread the virus. Our strategy is to reduce new infections, and therefore we all have to ensure that this bill helps us to address the spread of HIV in the country,” Dr. Atuahene told Selorm, hots of the Big Issue on Citi TV.

He expressed fear that service providers who offer health services to homosexuals will go underground when the bill is passed.

“I don’t really know if it will not drive them underground. When the bill was proposed earlier, some media men announced men having sex with men and mentioned names of service providers and their locations. So service providers who were attacked went underground, and I do not believe that this situation is not going to arise.”

“We know that drug use has huge public ramifications and so that made it difficult for people who needed help in terms of health service were not able to access and even when they mustered the courage to go to health facilities. They didn’t have adequate support they needed and that is exactly what I anticipate could occur under this law,” he expressed fear.

Dr. Attuahene said his outfit will work with the parliamentary committee on health to ensure that public health concerns are addressed in the bill.

“I’m happy that some public health provision clauses have been put in there. But I don’t know the details, and so we are going to work with the committee and members of the house to really ensure that we have adequate provisions to address all the public health concerns we have. We all know that the bill will be passed, but it’s for Ghanaians. And we need to have not just crime control approach, but we should also have public health approach to it and ensure that people will be removed from harm’s way,” the Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission said.

IES predicts drop in fuel prices from April 1

0

The Institute for Energy Security (IES) is forecasting a 2% to 5% decrease in fuel prices in the first pricing window in April.

According to IES, Liquefied Petroleum Gas will be the biggest gainer, with a 9% decrease in price.

IES Research Analyst, Adam Yakubu, speaking to Citi News said, this development is due to the drop in the price of crude oil on the international market, as well as the stability of the cedi against major trading currencies such as the US dollar.

“LPG has seen the biggest fall in price in closing the window. What will this mean for the domestic consumers of petroleum products? [It means that] within the market, we are looking at a slight drop between 2 and 5 percent across. LPG can do about a nine percent reduction. So, for the next two weeks, we project that the prices of these products will reduce”, he said.

We’ve enough buffers; cedi will soon appreciate – BoG Governor

0

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is bolstering its reserves to curb the cedi’s depreciation against major foreign currencies as demand for forex is anticipated to rise with the upcoming festive season.

The Central Bank’s move aims to reassure businesses and consumers by steering the local currency towards greater stability in response to current pressures.

At present, the cedi is trading at nearly GHS 17 to a dollar on the forex market, reflecting a year-to-date depreciation of 24.3%.

However, Dr. Ernest Addison, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, emphasized that strengthening reserves is essential to mitigating fluctuations in the cedi’s value and safeguarding economic stability.

“Some are praying that the cedi will recover to GHS 10.00 to a dollar. These are the problems in our economy, the issues about the exchange rate and financial sector issues. But I think the good news is that we are making progress because the developments we are seeing are not different from other jurisdictions.

“So, we need to stay focused and implement the appropriate policies and build buffers to be able to support the progress we have made.”

This strategy, he explains, will not only strengthen the local but also foster investor confidence and broadly support economic stability.

“We have $7 billion dollars in foreign exchange reserves. If I want to drive the dollar-cedi rate at GHS 10, I can do that tomorrow. But what about the day after tomorrow? So, we are balancing various factors, trying to build reserves and managing the exchange rate. So, all is not lost yet, there is some silver lining in the cloud, hopefully we will see the appreciation of the currency”, Governor Addison added.

He was speaking at the launch of “The Concise Law of Banking”, authored by private legal practitioner Afua Appiah-Adu.

The Concise Law of Banking is a practical and concise guide to banking law commissioned by the Institute for Law & Development (ILAD).

It is suitable for students, banking practitioners, lawyers, various professionals and others who wish to understand the principles of banking law.

NASCAR driver Noah Gragson suspended indefinitely after liking George Floyd meme

0

NASCAR and Legacy Motor Club have suspended driver Noah Gragson indefinitely over his activity on social media, they announced on Saturday.

While his social media actions were not specified, ESPN reported that a screenshot taken from Gragson’s Instagram account showed that he had liked a meme that mocked George Floyd. Floyd is the Black man who was killed by police officers in Minneapolis in 2020.

ESPN said it was not clear if that post was why Gragson, 25, was suspended. Whatever it was, Gragson acknowledged in a Twitter post on Saturday that his social media activity was improper.

“I am disappointed in myself for my lack of attention and actions on social media,” he wrote. “I understand the severity of this situation. I love and appreciate everyone. I try to treat everyone equally no matter who they are. I messed up plain and simple.”

His team, Legacy Motor Club, said it had suspended him for “actions that do not represent the values of our team.” NASCAR also announced his suspension, citing violations of conduct codes in the NASCAR rule book.

“NASCAR fully supports Legacy Motor Club’s decision to suspend Noah Gragson,” NASCAR said. “Following his actions on social media, NASCAR has determined that Gragson has violated the Member Conduct section of the 2023 NASCAR RuleBook and has placed him under indefinite suspension.”

Legacy Motor Club said Xfinity Series driver Josh Berry will drive the No.42 Legacy MC Chevrolet this weekend at Michigan International Speedway in place of Gragson.

Gragson is in his first full season as a Cup Series driver. He is in 33rd place in the standings and has no top 10 finishes.

“My Goal Is To Protect Afrobeats From White Vultures” – Kiddwaya

0

Evicted Big Brother Naija All Stars housemate and serial entrepreneur, Terseer Waya, simply known as Kiddwaya, has said his goal is to protect Afrobeats from “white culture vultures”.

Kidd, who is the son of billionaire businessman and socialite, Terry Waya, said the genre needs to be protected from white capitalists’ dominance.

He spoke in the interview segment of MTV Base Africa’s programme, Official Naija Top 10.

He said, “I want us [Nigerians] to really be able to maintain our grip on afrobeats. Because I fear that we do all these hard works; the music and it [the masters] will be completely owned by the white person.

“I feel like we need to do more to own our stuff. So, my goal is to promote afrobeats music outside of the country and bring in the right partners so that the ownership is shared. Because there are some vultures out there who just want to come and take everything; they own the artists, they own the labels, they own everything.

“One of my biggest fears is Nigeria losing its identity. What does a Nigerian look like? Yes, they put on agbada. But the younger Nigerian looks American. We are losing it. We need to be mindful of that.”

Saddick Adams criticizes special voters displaying their ballot after voting

0

Sports journalist Saddick Adams has chastised persons who displayed their ballot after casting their vote during the Special Voting exercise on December 2, 2024.

He fumed that it is unprofessional for security services, journalists, and election officials involved in the Special Voting process to share their ballots on social media.

The Angel FM journalist bemoaned the silence of law enforcement agencies, including the Electoral Commission, for not taking action against the act.

“Special voters are taking pictures of their ballots and sharing them. They are predominantly from Security Services, Journalists, Election Officials, and other ‘special service providers.’ A category of people who know or ought to know better. Just imagine what could be?

“Looks like silence has been better because it has become apparent that when it comes to party politics, the knowledge, common sense, and whatever level of education is useless to some persons,” he wrote on X.

This comes after some individuals displayed their ballots on social media during the Special Voting exercise to announce the candidates they voted for.

Two ballots spotted on X showed two ballot papers with the persons voting for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who occupied the number one position.

The act has been condemned vehemently by social media users who believe it undermines the integrity of elections in Ghana.

Meanwhile, the EC is yet to speak on the issue and address public concerns.

Bawku Conflict: We have just descended into anarchy

0

Security and Safety Analyst, Dr Adam Bonaa play videoSecurity and Safety Analyst, Dr Adam Bonaa

Security and Safety Analyst Dr. Adam Bonaa has stated that the decision by the Chief Justice to close down courts within the Bawku conflict zone indefinitely has driven the already chaotic zone into a state of anarchy.

Speaking to GhanaWeb TV’s George Ayisi in an interview, Dr. Bonaa raised concerns over the impact of the closure of the courts on justice delivery, law, and order amidst the heightened security situation in Bawku.

“Now the CJ says courts within the area are all closed down. It means that the state is failing these people. It means that if somebody slaps you and the police arrest him, what are they going to do? Because the law says don’t keep a suspect beyond 48 hours. What the CJ has done in Bawku is tantamount to saying there is all-out chaos in Bawku… we just descended into anarchy. You know, the Moses Law; an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth,” he stated.

On October 29, the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Gertrude Torkornoo, ordered courts in the Upper East Region to close down.

The decision was to protect lawyers and stakeholders of the judiciary in the region, given the volatile security situation in the area.

However, according to Dr. Bonaa, the decision by the Chief Justice failed to consider the impact on law and order as recent clashes had led to the death of several individuals.

Meanwhile, the Chief Justice, according to a memo dated November 8, 2024, has ordered the reopening of four courts in the area, namely, the Bolgatanga High Court, the Bolgatanga Circuit Court, the Bolgatanga District Court, and the Bongo District Court.

G4O policy: Continuous and repetitive purchase of gold not sustainable

0

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers does not think government’s gold-for-oil policy is sustainable.

COPEC in a statement said the policy has mandated the Precious Mineral Marketing Company (PMMC) to buy all gold from small-scale miners, community miners and a percentage from large-scale miners.

It further explained that although small-scale miners contribute about 34% of all gold produced and exported from the country, their output may not be able to sustain the policy.

“Other licensed buyers within the small-scale industry are funded by external investors and are required by contractual agreement to export their gold to these investors hence reducing the volume of gold to be purchased for the policy.”

It said in order to achieve the policy, Ghana would require a monthly purchase of about 205,000 ounces of gold locally.

It noted however that large-scale miners may not be able to supply to the PMMC because of their contractual arrangements with their external investors and creditors.

“From all indications, PMMC may not be able to accumulate as much gold as may be needed monthly for the policy to be sustained into the foreseeable future.”

COPEC further alleged that no gold was purchased prior to the arri of the first consignment under the policy.

“BOG rather depleted its gold reserves for the purchase of the 40,000 MT of diesel imported.”

Mozambique Proposes Pay Cut For Top Officials

0

The Mozambican cabinet has approved a bill proposing pay cuts for ministers, deputy ministers, state secretaries and MPs as the government grapples with a rising wage bill.

Finance and Economy Minister Max Tonela on Thursday said the proposal was also seeking to address concerns over provincial assemblies members’ salaries, which he said contradicted the principles of fair pay.

Mr Tonela said some of their salaries were significantly higher than those paid to other executives and specialized professionals.

He did not indicate the amount of the proposed cuts.

The pay cuts will not be applicable to the public servants whose salary was adjusted under the Unified Pay Scale (TSU) approved this year.

The move comes nearly two weeks after the International Monetary Fund highlighted the need for the government to reduce public wage expenditure.

The wage bill will be submitted to parliament for debate before it is passed into law.

Scrap new surveillance system, HRW tells Uganda –

0

Uganda’s new surveillance system, which allows the government to track the real time location of all vehicles in the country, undermines privacy rights, and creates serious risks to the rights to freedom of association and expression, Human Rights Watch said, urging government to scrap it.

On November 1, 2023, the government initiated the “Intelligent Transport Monitoring System”, reportedly to address national security issues. The authorities say it will build on the country’s existing traffic surveillance system with a network of surveillance cameras and mandatory cellular-network-connected tracking devices on all vehicles in the country.

“Uganda’s new transport surveillance system amounts to unchecked mass surveillance of all vehicles at all times, undermining the right to privacy for millions of Ugandans,” said Oryem Nyeko, Uganda researcher at Human Rights Watch.

According to him, the government should focus on protecting its citizens’ rights instead of abusing them.

The rights body said government of Uganda has limited public scrutiny of the technical system, its capabilities and the contract with the Russian company delivering the project. Also, it has published no plans for oversight and human rights mitigation around the project.

Since 2018, the Ugandan government has progressively expanded its surveillance capacity after President Yoweri Museveni unveiled a “nine-point security plan” to respond to a series of killings of high-profile political and government figures by unidentified people riding on motorcycles.

Museveni’s plan included the introduction of electronic license plates, which he said would enable police to track down the owners of vehicles discovered to have been at crime scenes.

In 2019, the government procured $126 million worth of closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) surveillance technology from the Chinese telecommunications company Huawei to monitor public spaces across Uganda. In July 2021, the government announced that it had entered an agreement with the Joint Stock Company Global Security, a Russian-registered company, to set up the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System.

Both the government and the company will operate the system for the first 10 years, after which the company will hand it over to the government, the authorities said.

Ms Susan Kataike, the spokesperson for the Works and Transport Ministry, told Human Rights Watch that the new system will introduce new license plate recognition and surveillance, facial recognition, and traffic density cameras, which will “complement” an already existing network of CCTV cameras operated by the police.

As part of the system, all vehicle owners will, after February 1, 2024, be required to pay between Ush50,000 ($18.57) and Ush714,300 ($189.47) to register their vehicles for new plates that will have an attached sim-card-equipped device provided by the state-owned telecommunications company, Uganda Telecommunications Corporation Ltd (UTL).

The device will allow the government to track the location of all registered vehicles from the police national command centre in real time. Foreign vehicles temporarily in Uganda will also be required to install the tracking devices for the time they are in the country.

The system will collect data from UTL’s telecommunications network, as well as the network of a privately owned telecommunications company, increasing the number of corporate private actors with potential access to the real-time location of all vehicles in Uganda.

“This creates serious human rights and security risks, Human Rights Watch said,” the rights body said in a Tuesday statement.

“Several other countries use technology that allows for vehicles to be tracked when authorities can scan them. But Uganda’s sim-card-based approach that will allow the government to track vehicles in real time is novel,” the statement added.

The government has in the past used surveillance technology to track and arrest government opponents and critics. In 2020, the police confirmed that they used CCTV, facial recognition, and license plate recognition technology to track down and arrest alleged protesters in the period leading up to Uganda’s 2021 elections.

Human Rights Watch says it has documented the arbitrary arrest and unlawful detention of people alleged to have taken part in protests during this period.

“Uganda already collects and stores vast personal information including names, signature, photo, and fingerprints of nationals to register sim cards and national identity cards. A Kampala-based media organization, the African Centre for Media Excellence, said in a 2023 report that this mass data collection has created a climate of fear for journalists in the country and restricted their work. In August 2022, the government announced plans to include DNA and iris scan information to register new identity cards.”

Uganda’s Data Protection and Privacy Act of 2019 provides for collecting person data under the pretext of “national security.”

Both the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2002 and the Regulation of Interception of Communications Act of 2010 also provide for “lawful interception and monitoring of certain communications in the course of their transmission through a telecommunication, postal, or any other related service or system in Uganda.”

These provisions are reportedly broad and contrary to international law, which requires that any intrusion on the right to privacy, including gathering metadata or surveillance of communications content, must be strictly necessary and proportionate to protection of a specified state interest and clearly regulated in law on a non-discriminatory basis.

“The scale and rate at which the Ugandan government is increasing its power to collect and store information about its citizens is alarming,” Nyeko said, arguing that the authorities should focus on bolstering the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms instead of restricting them, and harmonize its domestic laws on limitations on the right to privacy with international law.

Dr. Ernest Addison and Ms. Kathleen Addy

A 5-Member delegation, led by the Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Kathleen Addy, has paid a courtesy call on the Governor Ernest Addison and Management of the Bank of Ghana to seek mutually-beneficial relationships between the two institutions.

In his remarks, Dr. Addison stated that, public education on the proper handling of currency notes would be one of the key areas of collaboration.

He lamented the poor handling of currency notes by some Ghanaians and urged the NCCE to play a key role in the Bank’s “Clean Notes Campaign” initiative, including helping to educate citizens on the proper handling of the Ghana currency notes.

He remarked that Ghanaians’ aversion towards the use of coins had an impact on pricing, as vendors avoided the use of coins by rounding off prices adding this negatively impacted the Central Bank’s inflation objective.

NCCE Chairperson mentioned that the NCCE was an independent, non-partisan governance institution established under the 1992 Constitution with a mandate to educate citizens on their rights and responsibilities, as well as work towards entrenching democracy in Ghana.

Ms. Addy expressed gratitude to the Governor for the warm reception at the bank and welcomed the proposal to intensify public education on the proper handling of the Ghana currency notes.

The chairperson was accompanied by a Commission Member, Lawyer Victor Brobbey, the Acting Commission Secretary, Lucille Hewlett Annan, Director of Programmes, Dr. Imurana Mohammed and the Director of Finance, Monica Mamattah.

In the Governor’s team were the First and Second Deputy Governors, Maxwell Opoku-Afari and Elsie Addo Awadzi, Director of Research, Dr. Philip Abradu-Otoo, the Bank’s Secretary, Sandra Thompson.

Kofi Jumah, Managing Director of GIHOC Distilleries, clarified that the company, which took over the factory in 2019, has no intention of selling the facility.

I would be walking naked to Circle if….

0

GIHOC MD

New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, has said he would have been walking naked to Kwame Nkrumah Circle if there were no women on earth.

According to him, women are one of God’s best creation whom he loves so much.

The Chief Executive of GIHOC Distilleries disclosed this in an interview on the sidelines of the passage of the anti-LGBTQI+ bill.

“First of all, I don’t want any man to touch me. One of the best creations God ever made was to make the woman. I love the woman. When I see a woman if there were no women in this world, I would be walking naked from here to Circle; they manage my life,” he told Adubia TV.

The bill passed on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, awaits presidential assent to be law.

However, on March 5, a journalist cum lawyer, Richard Dela Sky filed a lawsuit against Parliament at the Supreme Court regarding its passage.

The reliefs sought by the journalist include an order restraining President Akufo-Addo from assenting to the bill and also preventing the “Speaker of Parliament and the Clerk to Parliament from presenting ‘The Human and Sexual Values Bill, 2024’ to the President of the Republic for his assent.”

In view of this, President Akufo-Addo has said until the Apex Court gives its verdict, no action would be taken by his government on the private Member’s bill.

He has also reassured the international community of Ghana’s commitment to upholding human rights despite the passage of the bill.

Addressing concerns during a diplomatic engagement, the President emphasised that Ghana remains steadfast in its long-standing reputation for respecting human rights and adherence to the rule of law.
