GH¢49m saga: We shouldn’t mix politics with law – Miracles Aboagye

0

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Special Aide to former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has warned against politicising the GH₵49 million National Signals Bureau controversy, insisting that it must be treated strictly as a legal matter.

He made the remarks while appearing on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, 10 May.

“We shouldn’t mix politics with law,” Aboagye insisted. “If there is credible evidence that public funds were misapplied, it must be pursued through formal investigations, not through headline-grabbing accusations.”

He emphasised that the rule of law should guide the process, not partisan interests.

Mr Aboagye went on to call for an independent inquiry led by the Office of the Attorney-General and key security agencies.

Concluding his comments, Mr Aboagye urged all stakeholders to allow the judicial process to run its course.

“Let us resist the temptation to weaponise these allegations for political gain,” he added. “Ghanaians deserve clarity and accountability, and that can only be achieved by keeping politics out of the courtroom.”

Presbyterian Church of Ghana outdoors 200th anniversary cloth

In a break away from the traditional all-white attire to celebrate the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday, this year, members of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) marked the occasion with the bi-centenary cloth.

The cloth, printed in blue and white background colours, revealed the logo of the anniversary which blends symbolism and modern design, reflecting the church’s rich history and vision for the future.

At the heart of the design is the iconic Presbyterian logo, encircled by elements that represent unity, continuity, and resilience. The “200” prominently featured in the design represents the Bi-Centenary of the Church (1828-2028).

From congregations in every corner in Ghana to congregations in Europe and North America, children, adult worshippers, leaders of the church groups and the clergy alike, turned up in amazing outfits made from the fabric, setting the tone for the four-year celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Church, launched which will be climaxed in 2028.

Theme

The theme for the anniversary, “PCG@200: Celebrating God’s Faithfulness and Impacting Generations through the Gospel” sums up the essence of the church’s mission over the past two centuries.

The Moderator of the General Assembly, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, described the logo as “a testament to God’s grace and the unwavering commitment of generations of Presbyterians who have dedicated themselves to building both the church and the nation.”

While encouraging  Presbyterians to hold on to the heritage and core values, the Moderator also urged them to embrace innovation, emphasising the church’s resilience and unwavering commitment to serving humanity.

He also highlighted the church’s contributions to various sectors, including education, healthcare, and social justice, and called for continued faithfulness in the face of challenges.

Embrace love, unity

Rt. Rev. Dr. Opare Kwakye, encouraged Ghanaians to embrace the power of love, unity, and hope in the face of adversity, drawing strength from the resurrection of Christ. He urges them to rise into newness of life with courage and conviction, declaring that “Because He lives, we can face tomorrow”. The message emphasizes the Christian heritage built on love, perseverance, and hope, reminding individuals of the solace found in the promise of new life and renewal.

The message also encourages Bawku to embrace peace, suggesting that the resurrection of Jesus Christ offers a foundation for peace and reconciliation

Decongest your markets to improve access routes and save lives

Merindee Mary Attigah-Mensah, Assistant Chief Fire Officer II GNFS Merindee Mary Attigah-Mensah, Assistant Chief Fire Officer II GNFS

The Central Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Assistant Chief Fire Officer II Merindee Mary Attigah-Mensah, has called on Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies in the region to take immediate steps to decongest markets, especially in major trading areas such as the Kotokuraba Market in Cape Coast.

The appeal was made following a simulation exercise held at Kotokuraba Market to commemorate International Firefighters’ Day.

In a press release dated May 9, 2025, it said the exercise detailed major challenges faced by fire personnel in accessing parts of the market due to congestion.

She said that such conditions could severely delay emergency response and put lives and properties at risk.

“Decongesting the markets will significantly enhance our ability to respond promptly to emergencies. We need clear access routes to save lives and protect livelihoods,” she indicated.

The Regional Coordinating Director, Bless Darkey, who was also present at the event, expressed support for the fire service’s concerns.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to equipping the GNFS to ensure effective operations.

Darkey added that the president remains committed to retooling the service and welcomed collaborative efforts between local authorities and emergency responders to improve safety in market areas.

“The president’s is committed to retooling the service for enhanced delivery, backing the call for market decongestion to facilitate efficient emergency response,” he stated.

The simulation exercise formed part of activities to raise awareness of fire safety and honor the work and sacrifices of firefighters across the country.

New Cocoa Price: We’ll give more than what Côte d’Ivoire is offering

0

The Head of Public Affairs at the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Jerome Sam, has disclosed that the new cocoa price will surpass the rate set by Côte d’Ivoire.

According to him, once the board is inaugurated, the primary concern of cocoa farmers, which is the increment in cocoa prices, will be addressed.

Currently, the producer price is set at GH¢3,100 per 64kg bag, marking a marginal increase of 0.03% compared to the previous rate announced in September for the 2024/2025 crop season.

The adjustment, which equates to GH¢49,600 per tonne, is aimed at aligning cocoa prices with prevailing market conditions and providing much-needed support to Ghanaian cocoa farmers.

Speaking to Citi Business News, Jerome Sam said; “If we are to stick to Côte d’Ivoire’s price as the benchmark, whatever price Côte d’Ivoire sets, we are going to give more than that. The board is yet to be inaugurated. When the board is formed, these issues will be tabled, but at least we have an idea of where to peg the price, and we will not set it lower than Côte d’Ivoire.”

However, he noted that COCOBOD will lose about US$1.4 billion in servicing 333,767 metric tonnes of cocoa.

The Head of Public Affairs at COCOBOD also attributed this loss to the inability of the previous administration to fulfill the terms of its contract.

“By the time we are done servicing 333,767 metric tonnes of cocoa, COCOBOD and the Ghanaian farmer will lose a whopping amount of about US$1.4 billion due to inefficiency and the previous COCOBOD administration’s inability to fulfill those contracts.

“At that time, we didn’t know. But notwithstanding, the CEO said this is not a justification to tell the Ghanaian farmer that because of ‘A, B, C, D,’ we will not announce a new price. No, if we want productivity to increase, we must find a way to motivate the farmer,” Sam added.

This guarantee aligns with growing market anticipation for a fair farmgate price, fueled by increasing global cocoa prices and Ghana’s dedication to securing improved earnings for its farmers.

Drawing from constitutional principles, historical precedents, and his own experience in public service, Amidu warns of the grave consequences if presidents bypass due process by accepting such resignations.

Infertility in women unmasked – Graphic Online

0

Infections in the reproductive system remain the leading cause of infertility among women in sub-Saharan Africa, a specialist has revealed.

Dr Nowiah Dennis said 85 per cent of women with infertility issues had a history of untreated or undiagnosed infection in their reproductive system.

Dr Dennis, a Liberian with vast experience in the area, described the percentage as too high compared to just 33 per cent for the rest of the world, stressing that most of the incidence or prevalence of infertility could be reduced once the continent was able to diagnose and cure infections on time, as well as people’s compliance to treatment.

She said this last Thursday when she made a webinar presentation on infertility.

The webinar was a health media training for journalists organised by Merck Foundation in partnership with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).

It was designed to help journalists understand the infertility issue in African communities and to learn the best media practices to cover such issues and raise awareness.

Aside from Dr Dennis, the training was addressed by fertility, psychiatry, diabetes and hypertension experts, as well as eminent media personalities.

Infertility, Dr Dennis explained, was the condition where a lady failed to get pregnant after 12 months of unprotected, more timely sexual intercourse when they are up to 35 years.

She mentioned the infections to include untreated sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhoea and HIV, adding that in the case of gonorrhoea infections, they were often undiagnosed because they presented with fewer symptoms.

Infection

Explaining how infections could cause infertility, she said the tissues that were mostly affected by these infections were the fallopian tube, where the sperm met the woman’s egg for pregnancy to occur.

She said infections led to scarring of these tubes and eventually blocked them, thereby preventing the sperm of the man from meeting the egg.

Other reasons she cited for sub-Saharan Africa’s high level of infertility included cultural practices such as female genital mutilation, religious practices, low resources in terms of seeking care and poor nutrition, unsafe abortion, exposure to smoking, pelvic inflammatory diseases and environmental pollutants.

Dr Dennis mentioned other causes of infertility to be stress and advised physicians to counsel their patients to de-stress, otherwise the patient might be wrongly diagnosed with infertility.

“As you see, most of these girls, teenagers, that experience unwanted pregnancy, don’t go with the intent of getting pregnant.

Instead, they go with the intent of just having fun. So by having fun, they get pregnant. So please, you need to de-stress,” she advised.

Strategies

She advised females to exercise moderately to increase their chances of getting pregnant, explaining that intense exercise could cause them to lose weight beyond a critical threshold, which in itself could interfere with immune production and eventually lead to infertility.

She said if women decided not to exercise, it could lead to obesity and exposure to the risk of infertility.

“You should eat a balanced diet and maintain a healthy weight.

While we appreciate you eating and exercising, we also encourage people to eat a balanced diet.

Eat little carbohydrates, little protein, vegetables, and stuff like that. It should be balanced so that you can gain more carbohydrates,” she said.

Dr Dennis said smoking, alcohol consumption or abuse of street drugs had an effect on the lungs and could affect fertility.

She urged women who love coffee to limit it before getting pregnant because it has the same effect as taking alcohol and smoking cigarettes.

For those who were addicted to coffee and could not reduce the amount they drank, she suggested they see a doctor or seek guidance from professionals.

Men

Dr Dennis advised men who wanted to optimise their fertility to avoid high temperatures such as taking hot baths and riding bikes over long distances, explaining that excessive temperature, radiation, industrial toxins and drugs contributed to male infertility.

She encouraged them to support their wives while they seek treatment for infertility because the condition could affect both men and women, and that once a spouse had been diagnosed with the problem of conception, the journey was a shared one.

Ghana’s 100m record holder, Benjamin Azamati, raced to an impressive wind assisted 9.93secs 100m win in California on Friday.

The result, although not considered legal due to the wind reading of +2.9m/s, is the latest in his bright start to the outdoor season.

The Paris Olympics semifinalist has run 10.07 and 10.02 in his last two meets, an incredible improvement from last season, and reminiscent of his 2022 form that saw him set the existing national record of 9.90secs.

The 27 year old will however not be part of Ghana’s Relay Team for the 2025 World Relays, after opting out due to congestion.

In a striking display of skill and determination, 18-year-old Monica from Bibiani, has captured public attention by operating a road roller machine at the bustling construction site of the Kasoa-Winneba Highway.

Monica, one of the few female machine operators in the sector, has been working on the Accra-Winneba Road project, where her confident handling of the heavy-duty vehicle has impressed engineers, commuters, and passersby alike.

According to a SikaOfficial video on X, her presence on the site challenges long-standing gender norms in the construction industry, especially in roles involving large machinery.

“I love what I do, and I’m proud to be part of something that is building our nation’s infrastructure. It wasn’t easy at first, but I was determined to learn and prove myself,” she indicated.

The post added that the construction managers on site praised Monica’s professionalism, citing her discipline, focus, and rapid mastery of technical tasks. Her story is inspiring many young people, especially the girls.

As Ghana continues to invest in infrastructure development, stories like Monicas are increasingly shining a spotlight on the vital contributions of young women in non-traditional roles.

Her example serves as a powerful message that capability and passion, not gender, should define opportunity.

The Kasoa-Winneba Highway project is part of a broader national effort to improve transportation links across the Central and Greater Accra regions, with the goal of enhancing economic activity and commuter safety.

Christianity is not about having a child, husbands and money – Mensah Otabil

0

Founder of International Central Gospel Church, Pastor Mensa Otabil Founder of International Central Gospel Church, Pastor Mensa Otabil

The Founder of International Central Gospel Church, Pastor Dr Mensa Otabil, has bemoaned the perception some Christians have about the faith.

According to him, some Christians are of the wrong beliefs that the faith is about getting every problem one has resolved by God.

“Christianity goes beyond seeking breakthrough, seeking favour, seeking answers to prayer. Christianity is not about God giving you a child. Oh, yes, even science can give you a child.

“Christianity goes beyond having a child, having a husband, having money, having favour, having breakthroughs, paying your rent,” Pastor Otabil said in a short video clip of a sermon he shared on X on May 8, 2025.

The pastor indicated that if Christianity is only about people getting their needs, then there is no need for the faith.

He added that God goes beyond the physical needs of people to provide for their spiritual needs.

“If that is what you’re looking for, so many people can satisfy you; rich people can satisfy you. But Jesus gives us bread that nobody else can satisfy. Because he goes beyond your immediate need to go into the deep needs of your soul, of your spirit,” he said.

Committee uncovers 15 major lapses in disaster response

0

A five-member investigative committee appointed by President John Dramani Mahama has submitted a detailed report on the 2023 Akosombo Dam spillage, highlighting systemic failures in disaster preparedness.

The committee called for urgent policy reforms to prevent similar crises in the future.

Presenting its findings on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, the committee pointed to significant shortcomings in flood mitigation planning and coordination. The Volta River Authority (VRA) had carried out controlled spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong dams between September 15 and October 30, 2023, due to dangerously high water levels that threatened the structural integrity of the dams.

While the spillage was deemed necessary, it triggered severe flooding in communities along the Volta River, displacing an estimated 38,624 people. Affected towns included Mepe, Battor, Sogakope Mafi, Adidome, Kpong, and Ada. Victims lost homes, livelihoods, and access to basic services.

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and VRA coordinated emergency response efforts, while the government distributed relief items to affected areas. However, the scale of devastation underscored the need for a more robust national disaster strategy.

In a national address marking his first 120 days in office, President Mahama acknowledged the ongoing hardship and confirmed that compensation for affected victims is in progress, with initial disbursements expected soon.

The government is set to release a comprehensive action plan based on the committee’s recommendations. The report is seen as a crucial step toward improving accountability, enhancing resilience, and ensuring the safety of communities vulnerable to future disasters.

Read below the detailed key findings regarding the spillage:

1. Factors that determine water spillage from the dam include reservoir elevation, rainfall and energy output from the power plant.

2. The Akosombo Dam recorded a maximum water inflow of 477,984 cubic feet per second (cfs) on September 18, 2023, at the Akosombo hydrometric station.

3. The 2023 Spill occurred between September 15 and October 30, 2023. The total volume of water discharged from the spillway was approximately 8 Million Acre Feet (MAF) for 46 days.

4. Historical spillage exercises have shown that in 1968, the volume was 5 times the volume spilled in 2023, indicating that there could be larger volumes of spill in the future due to climate change uncertainties.

5. Examination of Events Leading to Spillage: The spillage was primarily caused by releasing approximately 8 MAF volumes of water from the Akosombo Dam to prevent the dam’s destruction (overtopping) due to high reservoir water levels. Other contributing factors included unprecedented rainfall due to climate change and human activities exacerbating flood risks. Breaching the dam could have resulted in a catastrophic chain of events in the country.

6. VRA’s Emergency Preparedness Plan (EPP): The EPP specifies the roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders, including VRA, NADMO, District Assemblies, Security Agencies, etc., when an emergency occurs. The EPP was used to manage the disaster caused by the spillage and was the most technical document to be understood by various non-technical stakeholders. While VRA had socialised the document with all stakeholders and conducted a simulation exercise for some selected communities before the spill, high turnout and divisions amongst some District Chief Executives (DCEs)/Metropolitan Chief Executives (MCEs) and Members of Parliament (MPs) could have derailed clear communication lines for implementing the plan and distribution of relief items.

7. Assessment of Actions Taken: The response involved various government agencies, including the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the National Disaster

Management Organisation (NADMO). While there were efforts to provide immediate assistance, gaps in communication, resource allocation, and community engagement were identified.

8. Challenges Encountered: The Committee noted operational challenges, such as a lack of local disaster preparedness plans and inadequate evacuation resources, that hampered the emergency response process. Communication breakdowns and skepticism among community members regarding the information provided by authorities further complicated response efforts.

9. Community Challenges: The Committee also noted that land tenure attachment by the people, economic reliance on location, fear of unpredictability, insufficient financial resources and support from Authorities, restricted housing options, historical precedence of spillage and cultural resistance were factors that made most affected people unwilling to relocate during the spill event.

10. Temporal accommodation: The Committee noted with concern that some affected persons were still housed in tents, at the mercy of the weather, refusing to relocate to temporary accommodation built by VRA. They cited a lack of privacy as families were required to share rooms.

11. Resettlement: Some Government-initiated resettlement projects are far from the people’s previous abode. The people lament that their opinions were not sought in selecting the sites for the resettlement, and therefore, have refused to relocate and are requesting that the resettlement project be halted as the objective is not served.

12. Compensation: Since the spillage occurred, in communities upstream and downstream, the affected people in these communities have not been adequately compensated for the devastating impact the floods had on their properties and source of livelihoods. Some also expressed displeasure that though they suffered and continue to suffer the direct effects of the dam, they were not compensated when the Akosombo dam was built.

13. Evaluation of Strategies: The strategies employed to manage the situation revealed short-term and long-term effectiveness. However, improvements were necessary in community education and disaster management protocols.

14. Proposals for Additional Measures: To mitigate future risks, recommendations were made for enhancing emergency response protocols, improving community engagement, and implementing stricter land use regulations.

15. Communities Upstream: Several communities located upstream of the dam experienced significant flooding, resulting in the submersion of homes and

farmland. The rising water levels inundated large portions of agricultural land, leading to the loss of crops and threatening the livelihoods of affected farmers.

U.S.-based Ghanaian political commentator Twene Jonas called on former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to ‘go and learn sense’ from the current Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, amidst the sharp decline in the strength of the U.S. dollar against the Ghana cedi.

‘Is he normal?’ – Social media erupts over Prophet Uche’s shocking papal prophecy

0

Prophet Eric Boahen-Uche and Robert Prevost, known as Pope Leo XIV Prophet Eric Boahen-Uche and Robert Prevost, known as Pope Leo XIV

Ghanaian Prophet, Eric Boahen-Uche, the founder of Reign House Chapel International, has stirred outrage on social media following his controversial prophecy that the newly elected Pope, Robert Francis Prevost, known as Pope Leo XIV, will not live beyond four years.

According to the prophet, the papal position following the death of Pope Francis was originally destined for a black man. However, he claimed that the election was manipulated in favour of Robert Prevost.

Weeks before the conclave, Prophet Uche had made similar statements. Following the election of Pope Leo XIV, he reiterated his stance during a sermon to his congregation.

“Let me say this today, I was there this afternoon around 5, and Long John sent me a video, he told me, ‘Papa, what you said has come to pass, they have chosen a white pope,’ and he showed me the video.”

He continued, “Listen, when did I say this? A week ago. I said a black man would be the pope, but they wouldn’t give it to him. And the one they give it to will live only three to four years. If I’m truly a man of God, write it down. If the new pope lives beyond four years at the Vatican, then I am not Prophet Uche.”

His comments have since triggered a wave of criticism online, with many questioning the legitimacy and relevance of such predictions.

One user wrote, “Is he normal? Ghana dey enjoy concert too much.”

Another added, “Small juju you’re doing and you think you’re more powerful than the Roman Catholic Church?”

One commenter bluntly stated, “I don’t operate in the realm, but this is nonsense.”

Others questioned the negativity often associated with such prophecies, Why is it always doom and death? Don’t they ever see anything positive?”

“Why is it always Africa where these things happen?”

Some even called for regulation, “Can they pass a law that if a prophecy doesn’t come true, the prophet goes to jail? I think that would help.”

Another added, “There’s something wrong with this ecclesia community of pastors. No wonder I can’t remember the last time I went to church. Focus on your community, whether it’s going to be here for another 2,000 years.”

High utilities, taxes threaten Ghana’s industrialisation agenda – GUTA

0

High utilities and taxes could jeopardise the country’s economic stabilisation, government’s 24-hour economy initiative for jobs and industrialisation agenda, the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has cautioned.

This comes on the back of a recent announcement of a 14.75 per cent increase in electricity tariff, effective May 3, 2025, and the Government’s indication of adding the COVID-19 levy to Value Added Tax (VAT) in a rationalisation exercise.

“Fortunately, the economic indicators are getting right,” Dr Joseph Obeng, the President of GUTA, said in an exclusive interview with the Ghana News Agency, cautioning against actions that could derail the gains.

“We do not have to negate it with any unwanted costs of doing business, regarding utility tariff increment and high Value Added Tax (VAT). Because if care is not taken, we will shoot ourselves in the foot,” he said.

“The 14.75 per cent increase in electricity tariff is so huge and unjustified, given the improvement in economic indicators that were cited as reasons for previous increases,” Dr. Obeng said.

GUTA has been pushing for a broad restructuring of the current VAT system to ensure uniformity, simplicity, affordability, leading to greater compliance and generating more revenue for the Government.

The current VAT system comprised a standard rate of 15 per cent, with an additional 2.5 per cent National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL), 2.5 per cent Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) Levy, and a one per cent COVID-19 Levy.

In essence, businesses under the standard VAT scheme incurred a rate of 21 per cent, while small businesses with an annual turnover below GHS500,000 paid three per cent VAT under the Flat Rate Scheme (VFRS).

To alleviate hardships and ease the high cost of doing business, the Government pledged to scrap some tax handles, including Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy), Emissions Levy and 10 per cent levy on bet winnings, and COVID-19 levy.

So far, the E-levy, Emissions Levy and the Betting Tax have all been scrapped, but President Mahama has indicated that the COVID-19 levy would be addressed in a VAT rationalisation exercise in September 2025.

Dr Obeng advocated that the Government took bold steps to halt further increases in utilities, VAT and port charges to create a safe space for enhanced local production at affordable prices.

He urged the Government to purge the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) of inefficiencies and alleged corrupt practices, citing the missing containers of cables and other essential materials of the company as example.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has identified arrears by ECG to Independent Power Producers and other power sector players as a major concern in the implementation of the country’s US$3 billion loan-supported programme.

“Arrears are continuing to accumulate, which is a very significant challenge for Ghana, given the implications it can have for power supply,” said Stéphane Roudet, the IMF Mission Chief for Ghana.

He, however, noted that the Fund had seen a promising reform that could make ECG more efficient at collecting its bills and reducing the large commercial losses of the company.

He said this during a media roundtable at the April 2025 IMF/World Bank Group Spring meetings in Washington DC, USA, expressing confidence in the country’s economic stability.

Ghanaian dancehall musician, Livingstone Etse Satekla, popularly known as Stonebwoy, has rained a series of praises on some past and present African leaders.

While delivering his stage performance at his just-ended HoodTalk Festival on May 9, 2025, at the Black Star Square, Stonebwoy paused to give several accolades to leaders such as Kwame Nkrumah, Burkina Faso’s Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Muammar Gaddafi, among other leaders for their leadership.

He praised them for their exceptional leadership and for liberating Africans from colonial leadership and mental slavery.

“Standing inside the Black Star Square, we have to know why we are here. We have to know why this light is red, gold, and green. This is where Kwame Nkrumah made that speech in 1957 where he said Ghana is free forever.

“He said the freedom of Ghana is meaningless unless it is connected to the freedom of Africa. Big up to the president of Burkina Faso for liberating Burkina Faso. Big up Traoré, Big up Muammar Gaddafi, Big Up JJ Rawlings, Kwame Nkrumah, Thomas Sankara, and all other African leaders and legends who gave us peace,” he said.

He further called for Africans to rise against mental slavery and oppressions from the West.

“As we are here today at the Independence Square, looking at these edifices built by Kwame Nkrumah… It shows the youth of Africa are rising right now. We have to believe and rise in the African spirit,” he added.

The Majority Chief Whip of Ghana’s Parliament, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor; and the Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, were at each other’s throats on social media on May 7, 2025.

The two Members of Parliament lambasted each other over a claim by embattled former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene, that some GH¢49m he has been accused of stealing was used to pay individuals and entities, including members of committees of Parliament, for national security activities.

He listed 10 “special operations” as well as the individuals and outfits who benefited from the funds and the amounts they received.

The list included a supposed disbursement of over GH¢9.5 million to ISC Holdings for “Special Operations” in 2020; GH¢6.9 million to various personnel for “Operation Conquered Fist” between 2020 and 2024; and over GH¢3.7 million for “Operation Calm Life” to various individuals between 2020 and 2024.

The other payments include GH¢960,000 as allowances to members of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament and GH¢309,000 to the Subsidiary Legislation Committee for the enactment of laws for the NSB.

Rev Ntim Fordjour, who is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin South, in a post shared on X, described the allegation by Adu-Boahene as scandalous.

He was particularly bemused by the supposed payment made to the committees of Parliament and called for an investigation.

He claimed that the “opposition political party” Adu-Boahene mentioned as having been given GH¢8.3 million was the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“This is shocking, scary and a major National Security scandal!!! 8.3 million cedis support for NDC at the peak of 2024 Election campaign? 960,000 cedis for Defence & Interior Committee in 2020/21 for passing legislation?

“309,000 cedis for Subsidiary Legislation Committee in 2024 for passing LI? 5.135 million cedis expended on President Mahama’s (President-Elect) Special Aides in Dec 2024? The taxpayer deserves a thorough and transparently conducted probe into the above financial impropriety. This must not be politics as usual,” he wrote.

The remarks of Rev John Ntim Fordjour did not sit well with Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, who is the MP for South Dayi, who said he was saddened by his colleague MP’s remarks.

He replied the Assin South MP, telling him that he was making a fool of himself, adding that Rev Ntim Fordjour, as the Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, should know who to address such an issue to.

“Hon Ntim Fordjour, you’re embarrassing yourself as an MP & I feel sad for you. Someone claims he brought illicit money to the Defence & Interior Committee in 2024, at a time when your NPP colleague Hon Kennedy Agyepong of Assin Central was the Chairman, supposedly as allowance to committee members for a Bill enacted into law in 2020, and you don’t find anything wrong with such a story?

“In any case, the Defence & Interior Committee is now ranked by you as MP for Assin South, so don’t sit here and ask questions. Don’t you know what to do?” the South Dayi legislator wrote.

He added that the NDC did not receive any money from the former Director-General of the NSB.

Ntim Fordjour hit back, describing Dafeamekpor’s reaction as “uncouth” and “unfit for a response.”

He suggested that Dafeamekpor benefited from the money given to one of the committees, adding that he (the South Dayi MP) should be prepared to answer questions on his role when the probe into the issue begins.

“While I consider your uncouth reaction unfit for a response from me, it will serve the purpose of exposing your extreme discomfort to probes to spare a few words to urge you to get ready to explain when the probe begins, how much you personally earned from the GH¢360,000 Adu-Boahene claims he gave to your committee on Subsidiary Legislation of which you were the Vice Chairman??” he wrote.

Government to clamp down on abused tax exemptions – Deputy finance minister

South Sudan diplomat shakes hands with Thomas Ampem Nyarko, Deputy Minister for Finance (Right) South Sudan diplomat shakes hands with Thomas Ampem Nyarko, Deputy Minister for Finance (Right)

Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, has stressed the government’s commitment to tightening loopholes within Ghana’s tax exemptions regime, describing it as a major source of revenue loss for the country.

This commitment was reiterated by Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, during a meeting with a delegation from the South Sudan Revenue Authority.

The South Sudanese contingent, led by its Deputy Commissioner, is currently in Ghana to study the country’s approach to tax exemptions.

During their discussions, Ampem Nyarko stressed the heightened urgency for Ghana to bolster domestic revenue mobilisation, particularly in an era of diminishing international aid and grants.

“We are not getting the aid and grants we used to get, and it’s important that we look within to make sure we can raise enough,” he stated, emphasising the need for self-reliance in funding national development.

While acknowledging that tax exemptions are a legitimate policy tool for attracting investment and supporting vital economic sectors, the deputy minister highlighted that the core issue in Ghana has been the persistent misuse of the system over time.

“Our exemptions regime has been abused, and so we are doing a lot to tighten it up. Government has taken steps to close loopholes and improve transparency around how exemptions are granted and managed,” he explained.

The visiting South Sudanese delegation expressed their rationale for choosing Ghana, citing positive reports regarding the nation’s ongoing reforms in its tax exemptions policy. They anticipate that the insights garnered from their engagements will be invaluable as South Sudan prepares to draft its own comprehensive tax exemptions policy framework.

Stabilisation of the cedi while prices of goods are soaring is meaningless

0

Member of Parliament for Fanteakwa North Constituency, Kwame Appiah Kodua Member of Parliament for Fanteakwa North Constituency, Kwame Appiah Kodua

The stabilisation of the Ghana cedi is meaningless unless it is linked to a reduction in the prices of goods and services in the country, Kwame Appiah Kodua, the Member of Parliament for Fanteakwa North, has reasoned.

Speaking on Adom TV’s breakfast show, Kwame Appiah Kodua dismissed the recent performance of the country’s currency.

He argued that despite the cedi’s rise against major trading currencies worldwide, the prices of goods continue to increase in the country.

Citing the alleged rise in the prices of cement and yam as the foundation of his argument, Kwame Appiah Kodua criticised the government for failing to honor its promises to the country.

“The stabilisation of the cedi is meaningless if it cannot be linked to the prices of goods. If you can’t link cedi stabilisation to the prices of goods and services, it’s meaningless. What is the price of cement today?” he quizzed.

“The government took office with the promise of resetting the country. At the time they took over, cement prices averaged GH¢85. As we speak, they are around GH¢130 to GH¢140. This is a government that campaigned on resetting the country. If you stabilize the cedi and the prices of goods keep rising, it’s ineffective. The price of yam is also on the rise,” he said.

Background

The Ghanaian cedi has been named the world’s best-performing currency in April 2025, gaining nearly 16% against the US dollar since the beginning of the month, according to Bloomberg.

This significant appreciation has brought relief to Ghana’s economy, helping to curb inflation and strengthen consumer confidence.

As of May 10, 2025, the cedi is trading at GH¢13.10 to the dollar, its strongest level in months. The currency’s rally has contributed to a notable drop in inflation.

Government Statistician, Dr Alhassan Iddrisu, on May 7, 2025, announced that consumer price inflation fell to 21.2% in April, down from 22.4% in March, marking the lowest level in eight months.

Monthly inflation also slowed to 0.8%, largely driven by reduced import costs due to the cedi’s strength.

Shot SHS girl arrives in the UK for urgent eye surgery following Ibrahim Mahama’s intervention

Suzy Adwoa Pinamang, the second-year student of Adventist Senior High School at Bantama, who was accidentally shot in the eye by a classmate, has arrived in the United Kingdom to undergo emergency medical treatment.

Suzy touched down in the UK on Saturday, May 10, 2025, accompanied by one caregiver. She is also joined by Rafik Mahama, the Special Aide to Ibrahim Mahama, who is sponsoring the entire cost of her travel and medical treatment.

This follows a recommendation from doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, and Agarwal Eye Hospital in Accra, who confirmed that she had sustained severe injuries to her eyes and required urgent specialist care abroad.

Her journey and treatment have been made possible through swift interventions by Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who confirmed the successful visa acquisition and travel arrangements via an official statement on his Facebook page on Thursday, May 8, 2025.

Ablakwa expressed profound gratitude to business mogul, Ibrahim Mahama, for his support and to the UK High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson, for her swift and compassionate response to his appeal, which enabled Suzy and her caregivers to obtain emergency travel clearance.

“It is also in order to convey heartfelt gratitude to Ibrahim Mahama, who has generously decided to cover the entire cost of Madam Pinamang’s medical treatment in the UK.

“This is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together. I wish Suzy Adwoa Pinamang the very best, don’t give up the fight, brave young lady, you are a winner!” he wrote on Facebook.

He also acknowledged the instrumental role played by the MP for Bantama, Francis Asenso-Boakye, who brought Suzy’s case to his attention and requested urgent diplomatic intervention.

Additionally, the Ghana High Commission in the UK has been directed to provide Suzy with special consular assistance and privileges during her stay, to ease her transition and ensure she receives the highest standard of support.

Suzy’s ordeal has sparked public outrage and raised serious concerns about student safety, firearm access among minors, and the mental health impact on victims of school-related violence.

President Mahama believes in your ability to fix cocoa sector – Okyenhene to COCOBOD CEO

0

Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin and Dr. Randy Abbey, COCOBOD CEO Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin and Dr. Randy Abbey, COCOBOD CEO

Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, the Okyenhene and Paramount Chief of Akyem Abuakwa, has told the newly appointed Chief Executive of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr. Randy Abbey that despite the challenges in the cocoa sector, President John Mahama’s decision to appoint him means he has every trust in his acumen to transform the cocoa sector..

These words of encouragement were given during a courtesy call by Dr. Abbey and his management team to the Ofori Panin Fie, the seat of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council, as part of his official working tour of the Eastern Region.

The visit was meant to formally inform the traditional ruler of Dr. Abbey’s presence and activities in the region and seek his support and guidance while he engages with cocoa-growing communities under his jurisdiction.

In his welcome address, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin while acknowledging the sector’s vital contribution to Ghana’s economy did not mince words about the current state of the cocoa industry and lamented that the financial returns have not trickled down adequately to those at the base of the value chain, particularly the cocoa farmers and called for an improvement.

“It is deeply worrying that cocoa remains one of Ghana’s largest sources of foreign exchange, yet our cocoa farmers continue to live in poverty. Across western countries, cocoa farmers are millionaires. But here in Ghana, our farmers barely get by. This is unacceptable,” he lamented.

He tasked the current leadership at COCOBOD to focus not only on increasing national output but also on enhancing the livelihood of farmers through better remuneration and productivity stimulating initiatives.

The Okyenhene further urged Dr. Abbey to move beyond the status quo and bring fresh thinking into COCOBOD’s operations.

He emphasised that innovation must be at the heart of the new administration’s approach to farmer engagements.

“You have assumed office at a time when our cocoa sector is at a crossroads,” Osagyefo noted.

He assured Dr. Abbey of the traditional council’s full support and encouraged collaboration between COCOBOD and local leadership to ensure that policy implementation aligns with the realities on the ground.

In his remarks, Dr. Randy Abbey expressed his deep appreciation for the warm reception and the frank, visionary counsel offered by the Okyenhene.

He acknowledged the urgency of the issues raised and pledged to put farmers at the center of every decision and policy undertaken by COCOBOD.

“I believe that for COCOBOD to succeed, we must first listen to those who are closest to the land, I mean the farmers and the communities that support them,” he said.

He added that his leadership would focus on three core pillars: farmer welfare, sustainable productivity, and sectoral innovation.

The visit to Kyebi forms part of a broader working tour by Dr. Abbey and his management team across cocoa-growing regions, aimed at strengthening community relations and identify key operational challenges.

Dr. Abbey later engaged some cocoa farmers in the Asamankese district and addressed some pertinent issues affecting them.

Amaliba, who is also member of the legal team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) says he wished for a strong opposition from the NPP better than what the party is currently doing.

‘It doesn’t make sense’ – Manasseh queries government over non-prosecution of Chinese galamseyers

Investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni Investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni

Investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has criticised the John Dramani Mahama government over its decision not to prosecute Chinese nationals arrested during illegal mining raids.

According to Awuni, the government’s stance on Chinese citizens undermines the fight against galamsey and has worsened the situation.

Speaking at the Anatomy of Returnee Presidency series on Friday, May 9, 2025, he said; “It is even worse now that the government has made it a policy not to prosecute the Chinese. I’m saying Chinese because they are the foreigners who are often asked to go home peacefully. This, for me, doesn’t make sense.

“I’m yet to see anything meaningful when it comes to fighting illegal mining.”

Awuni also questioned the effectiveness of the John Dramani Mahama government’s policies against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

He argued that the government has not introduced new interventions and is instead recycling old policies from previous administrations.

The investigative journalist further criticised measures such as tree planting and bans on illegal mining, stating that they have proven ineffective in the past.

“I’m not very enthused until we see implementation. Banning illegal mining and launching tree and water initiatives — these are not new. I have done stories about tree planting in northern Ghana under SADA, and I know it was a failure,” he added.

It would be recalled that in April 2025, the Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, announced that the government is not interested in prosecuting foreigners engaged in fraud and illegal mining activities across the country.

Speaking during an engagement with the Ashanti Regional Police Command, he indicated that government is focused on removing foreign nationals involved in galamsey, which has caused extensive environmental damage nationwide.

ECG staff allegedly dupes Dambai residents over GH₵14k in fake meter registration scheme

0

A staff at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), William Keh, at Dambai in the Krachi East Municipality, has duped some 1,479 individuals worth GH₵14,790 through a fraudulent meter registration scheme.

In April 2024, Keh allegedly deceived some Assembly members in the area by claiming to have procured meters for registration.

Those Assembly members were requested to register their residents who needed meters. However, it was later discovered that the meter procurement claim was false.

A Ghana News Agency three-month investigation uncovered that the suspect, Keh, collaborated with six Assembly members from various electoral areas, collecting GH₵10 each from victims under the guise of meter registration.

The Assembly members, unaware of the scam, facilitated the process in their electoral areas including Katanga East, Dormabin North, KpareKpare, Kwame-Akura West, Dambai Zongo and Dambai Lakeside.

At KpareKpare Electoral area, a total of 243 individuals were registered, 96 persons registered at Katanga East, 282 took part in the registration exercise at Dormabin North, 127 individuals also registered at Kwame-Akura East, 300 residents at Dambai Zongo and 440 individuals respectively at Dambai Lakeside, with Assembly members from the various being conduits.

The suspect collected monies from the affected electoral areas during unofficial meetings, including using funeral programmes to collect the loot from unsuspecting victims.

For instance, the suspect used the funeral grounds of the late Krachi East Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Bernard Aborkugya Mensah, to transact business rather than at the ECG office, raising concerns about his intentions.

A delegation led by the presiding member (PM) of the Krachi East Municipal Assembly, Rockson Okru, has visited the ECG District office and found that the management was unaware of the exercise.

During an investigation, Keh on tape acknowledged his misconduct and requested a meeting to resolve the issue.

However, the GNA investigator declined to meet the team at a designated place, citing safety concerns.

A second meeting scheduled at A.V. Pub was also declined as Keh, a church leader, was concerned about being seen by church members.

A third meeting finally took place at Oti Radio, a local station in Dambai.

At Oti Radio, Keh accepted responsibility for his actions and requested three months to refund the loot to the affected Assembly members.

He also pleaded to the GNA to temper justice with mercy and drop the story, citing his previous misconduct at Kpando in the Volta Region, as this would lead to his outright dismissal.

Meanwhile, GNA investigations uncovered that the suspect was previously interdicted for three years in Kpando, in the Volta Region for similar misconduct before being reinstated after promising to be of good behaviour, and transferred to Krachi East.

The GNA’s visit to the ECG Municipal head office in Dambai showed that the undertakings by the suspect were not sanctioned by the employer.

However, the team was left stunned when Madam Irene Odame, the ECG Municipal Manager stated that her outfit had not received any official notification or letter regarding the fraudulent adventure by Keh.

NSA reclaims Tamale Kaladan Park following legal resolution

0

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has successfully regained control of the Kaladan Park and its surrounding lands in Tamale after a prolonged legal dispute.

The reclaimed parcel, equivalent to the size of five football fields, represents a significant milestone in the Authority’s broader efforts to revitalise sports infrastructure across the country.

The announcement comes following a recent working visit by newly appointed NSA Director General, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, to the Northern Regional capital.

During his engagement with management and staff at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, Mr Ankrah assessed the current state of facilities and discussed future development plans.

NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah visits Regional Office in Tamale

While acknowledging the deteriorating condition of some existing infrastructure, the Director General expressed optimism about the renewed prospects for investment and development at Kaladan Park—historically known as the home ground of Real Tamale United.

Chief Director of the NSA, Alhaji Abubakar Mahamoud, who was part of the delegation, confirmed the Authority’s legal success in reclaiming the park and securing surrounding lands that had previously been encroached upon.

The NSA has indicated that once documentation is finalised, it will initiate engagement with potential investors to support redevelopment efforts in the area.

This development aligns with the Authority’s stated objective of implementing strategic reforms and infrastructure upgrades as part of its ongoing RESET agenda for sports development in Ghana.

‘I need the TGMAs to fill my empty spaces’

Ghanaian highlife musician and songwriter, Kofi Kinaata Ghanaian highlife musician and songwriter, Kofi Kinaata

Ghanaian highlife musician and songwriter, Kofi Kinaata, is pleading with fans to vote for him in the upcoming 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

In a video shared on social media on May 9, 2025, Kofi Kinaata, who has been nominated for three categories at the TGMAs, noted that he is optimistic about winning all three awards.

He emphasised that he needs the awards to fill the empty spaces in his awards collections.

“Tomorrow’s TGMAs is all about filling in the empty spaces. I want to fill all these corners with the awards. So, God willing tomorrow, I am winning the Highlife Artiste of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, and Record of the Year,” he said.

The ‘Effiakuma Broken Heart’ hitmaker also sarcastically pleaded with netizens to explain how the award scheme works to his mother, Auntie Ama.

According to the musician, after using his mother’s name for a song, she has consistently asked for revenue gained from the music.

“There is a little problem surrounding the Record of the Year because I titled that song, Auntie Ama and she has consistently asked me about the music. Social media lawyers, please explain to my mother that if you win an award, you are given a plaque and not money.

“Moreover, we want this plaque more than money. So, I don’t want a situation where after winning the Record of the Year, she would ask me for money attached to it,” he added.

The much-anticipated TGMAs come off on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Center (AICC).

Musicians billed to perform on the night include Stonebwoy, King Promise, King Paluta, KiDi, Beeztrap KOTM, and Ayisi, among others.

President of Imani Africa and policy analyst, Franklin Cudjoe, has swiftly dismissed the assertion made by former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, who suggested that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost the goodwill of Ghanaians due to a communication deficit.

In what was arguably his most concise social media post of the day, Cudjoe took to X (formerly Twitter) on May 9, 2025, to unequivocally refute the Bosomtwe MP’s claims.

His three-word response aimed to discredit the entirety of Dr Adutwum’s interview with UTV on May 8, 2025.

“No no no,” Franklin Cudjoe captioned his retweet of excerpts from Dr Adutwum’s interview, clearly indicating his disagreement with the former Minister’s analysis.

Former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, had stated that communication challenges thwarted the New Patriotic Party’s efforts to project their achievements to Ghanaians.

He made this assertion while speaking to things that led to the NPP’s lose in the 2024 Elections on UTV on May 8, 2025.

“The NPP embarked on very impactful projects – most of which were in remote areas. However, because the party was unable to properly highlight these achievements due to ineffective communication, they lose the goodwill of Ghanaians,” he had said.

However, the president of reputable policy think tank has vehemently disagreed to this assertion.

Following the appreciation of the local currency against major trading currencies, especially the US dollar in recent times, many, including the trading community, have lauded President John Dramani Mahama for the Ghana cedi’s gains.

In a video gone viral on social media, a woman, who appears to be a food vendor, heaped praises on President Mahama for the drop in prices of some food items, including cooking oil, bags of rice, and tubers of yam.

In the video sighted by GhanaWeb, the vendor reported that the cost of a gallon of cooking oil, once pegged at GH¢1,000, has now dropped to GH¢680. This signifies a GH¢320 reduction in price.

Similarly, a bag of rice that previously sold for GH¢500 now goes for GH¢380.

“Mahama is my saviour. Today, when I went to the market, this gallon of oil that I buy for GH¢1,000 was sold to me for GH¢680. This tuber of yam was also bought at GH¢40 despite the shortage of yam on the market… God bless you Mahama,” the woman was heard saying while beaming with smiles.

Meanwhile, social media users have expressed mixed reactions to her claim. While some agree that food prices have dropped, others criticised her for attributing it to politics.

The cedi is trading at a buying price of GH¢13.09 and a selling price of GH¢13.10 to a dollar on the interbank market.

The British pound is being bought at GH¢17.42 and sold at GH¢17.44, while the euro trades at a buying price of GH¢14.74 and a selling price of GH¢14.75.

Checks by GhanaWeb Business on May 10, 2025, at 07:00 AM indicate that the cedi is trading at GH¢13.40 to the dollar, while the pound is trading at GH¢18.50 at some major forex bureaus across the country.

Additionally, the euro is trading at GH¢15.80 on the retail market.

CPP reacts to Adu-Boahene’s claims GH₵8.3m was spent on ‘opposition party’

0

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has strongly denied claims that it received financial support from the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) government ahead of the 2024 elections.

The CPP stated emphatically that the party relied on its meagre resources and not on any support from the ruling party at the time.

The rebuttal comes after former National Signals Bureau (NSB) boss Kwabena Adu-Boahene, currently on trial for allegedly misappropriating GH¢49 million, claimed part of the funds were distributed to opposition parties for “covert national security operations”.

In a memo addressed to the National Security Coordinator, the former spy chief claimed the huge sums in question were used for covert national security operations.

This, he said, included some GH₵8.3 million for “communications equipment” for an opposition party and nearly GH₵1 million in payments to legislators for passing key security laws.

Consequently, the former spy chief accused the Attorney General of launching a malicious prosecution against him.

However, CPP General Secretary Kwame Nkrumah Botsio dismissed the allegations in a fiery interview on on Friday:

“We did not receive any support [from the NPP]. We received support from well-wishers, and if we had received anything close to what is being bandied about, we would have won the election.”

Botsio highlighted the party’s financial constraints during the campaign: “As you can tell, we were so resource-strapped, we did not even have one TV advert, not one radio advert, and just had one billboard.”

He condemned the alleged misuse of state funds: “The allegations that are coming up are preposterous because these are taxpayers’ money. Whether in a rich country or a poor country, you don’t just dole out US$500,000 to an opposition party for whatever reason, especially as it falls outside of what you call security reasons.”

The General Secretary also detailed the party’s grassroots approach to election monitoring:

“We did the collation ourselves on my laptop, and our able regional chairmen did the collation themselves at the regional level and forwarded the results to us. We did not have any collation equipment at all except our laptops.”

The CPP’s denial comes as the high-profile corruption case continues to reveal explosive claims about alleged financial irregularities during the 2024 election period.

Meanwhile, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has challenged Mr Adu-Boahene to disclose the specific opposition parties he gave the cash to procure election collation logistics and equipment because the umbrella party was not a beneficiary.

Speaking to JoyNews, the Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the NDC, Dr Rashid Tanko-Computer, dismissed the claims, saying, “On authority, I’m telling you the NDC has nothing to do with what came out of that story.

“Those people they’re referring to supported them during their recent demonstration. He knows his partners—that’s who he was referring to. And I’m sure everybody has seen that. My opponent would give me resources to defeat him in an election? Does that make sense?” he quizzed.

Dr Tanko further asserted that other political parties in opposition had not shown any real interest in unseating the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and were often aligned with them.

“When we were in IPAC, anytime the NDC opposed the EC and NPP, those parties sided with the EC and NPP. The NDC has nothing to do with this. We fought hard, used our own resources, and dealt a heavy blow to the NPP.”

When asked whether the NDC might have received funds unknown to him, he dismissed the suggestion.

“I can speak on authority—it’s not possible at all. These guys are just clutching at straws. It won’t help them. They should go and negotiate a plea bargain; otherwise, he [Adu-Boahene] could be looking at 25 years.”

Dr Tanko added that the NDC fully supports the Attorney General’s efforts to prosecute the former NSB boss.

“The party has no business with whatever rubbish is coming out—we are not part of it.”

Correspondence from the Ashanti Region

A cargo truck lost control and plowed into multiple vehicles in Krofrom, Kumasi, on Friday afternoon following a heavy downpour, leaving scores injured.

The accident involved commercial vehicles, popularly known as trotro, private cars, tricycles (pragia), and other road users.

According to eyewitnesses, the truck was descending from the Krofrom traffic light towards Ashtown when the driver lost control near the X5 Pub, sending the vehicle careening into oncoming traffic.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the truck striking multiple vehicles, trapping drivers and passengers.

One female witness estimated that over ten people sustained injuries ranging from minor to severe.

“It was terrifying. I saw a woman lying motionless in front of the X5 Pub after falling from a tricycle (Pragia). Vehicles were stuck in gutters, and many people were struggling to get out of their cars. Some had broken legs, while others had fractured hands. It’s too scary to even eat,” she recounted.

Passersby and concerned citizens quickly mobilized to rescue the trapped occupants.

The injured victims have been transported to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and Tafo Government Hospital for medical attention.

Police have since initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident.

Miracles Aboagye concedes to Mahama government’s role in cedi stability

0

A member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) communications team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has acknowledged the role of the Mahama-led administration in the recent appreciation of the Ghana cedi against the US dollar.

This admission presents an unusual shift from the Miracles’ political rhetorics that seek to pin down the NDC at the least chance.

Interestingly, Aboagye had taken to social media to acknowledge the early success of the Mahama-led government in stabilising the cedi.

“$1 is selling at about GHS13.4 on the Retail (Forex Bureau) Market today while the Interbank (Weighted Median) Rate published by the BoG stands at GHS13.2. The convergence between the interbank rate and the retail market rate is very remarkable Indeed #AbanPapaAba #CediReigns,” Sammy Gyamfi shared on his X on May 9, 2025.

However, in a surprising turn of events few hours later the same day, the NPP communicator shared another post on X, conceding to a claim made by the Acting Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi, regarding credit for the cedi’s performance.

“The one thing I agree with Sammy Gyamfi and Annan Perry (sic) is their push to give credit to the NDC government for the recent appreciation of the Cedi. I hold the firm belief that (sic) the Government of the day is responsible for the performance of the cedi,” Aboagye stated.

The motivation behind Aboagye’s unexpected concession to a political rival remains unclear.

However, his tone suggests a hint of caution, perhaps implying a “wait and see” attitude regarding the longevity of the cedi’s current stability.

Why social media users are lambasting Ghanaian prophet?

Ghanaian Prophet Eric Boahen-Uche, the founder of Reign House Chapel International Ghanaian Prophet Eric Boahen-Uche, the founder of Reign House Chapel International

Ghanaian Prophet Eric Boahen-Uche, the founder of Reign House Chapel International, has sparked a social media storm with his claim that the newly elected Pope, Robert Prevost, now known as Pope Leo XIV, will not live beyond four years.

The prophet asserted that Pope Leo XIV’s election was manipulated to prevent a Black man from ascending to the papacy.

During a sermon, Prophet Uche emphatically stated, “If the new pope lives beyond four years at the Vatican, then I am not Prophet Uche.”

Following his prophecy, social media users expressed skepticism and frustration, with many questioning the necessity and nature of such predictions, particularly why they often focus on doom and tragedy.

‘You were on my wall, yet thieves came – Woman questions pastor after robbery

0

The burgled shop and the Man of God The burgled shop and the Man of God

A female shop owner cried uncontrollably as she asked her church leader why, despite having the leader’s picture in her shop, it was broken into.

The woman, who revealed that she had been at home for some time due to illness, said she received a call informing her of an incident at her shop. Upon arrival, she discovered that thieves had broken in and stolen all her goods.

A video posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) shows the clothing shop completely emptied by the thieves.

The heartbroken owner is heard crying and saying:

“God, I am dead. I’ve been sick and at home for over a week. Suddenly, I started receiving many phone calls, only to be told that thieves have stolen everything from my shop. Adom Nyame [Man of God], where are you? I hung your picture in my shop, yet these thieves were able to break in and rob me. They have caused me great loss. God, intervene on my behalf—other people’s items are also gone. The thieves left nothing. Adom Nyame, I trusted in your image for protection, but where were you when I needed help the most?”

Some Christians place so much faith in their pastors that they go as far as hanging their pictures in their homes and businesses, believing that these men of God can offer spiritual protection and grant divine favors.

S&P upgrades Ghana’s credit rating from Selective Default to CCC+

0

Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance

S&P Global Ratings has upgraded the country’s foreign-currency sovereign credit rating from Selective Default (SD) to CCC+, reflecting renewed investor confidence and the positive momentum in economic management under the leadership of Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.

The announcement, made on May 9, 2025, comes as Ghana makes decisive progress in restructuring its external debt and stabilising its macroeconomic environment, following years of turbulence.

According to S&P’s latest report, Ghana’s negotiations with its remaining commercial creditors are nearing completion, a key milestone that has restored credibility and eased fiscal pressure.

S&P highlights that while challenges persist, the current administration’s firm commitment to reforms is yielding tangible benefits. Inflation, though still elevated at 22%, is steadily falling, driven by a strengthening cedi and lower energy prices.

This progress, according to the report, reflects strong policy direction from the Ministry of Finance under Dr Ato Forson.

Dr Forson’s stewardship has seen the launch of vital legislative reforms, including amendments to the Public Financial Management Act, reinstatement of fiscal rules, and steps to establish an independent fiscal council, measures aimed at ensuring prudent management of public finances.

Despite inheriting significant fiscal arrears, the government is prioritising expenditure-led consolidation over aggressive tax hikes, in line with conditions under the IMF’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) program.

The Mahama administration is targeting a primary surplus of 1.5% of GDP in 2025 and has committed to keeping expenditure growth below 10% annually over the next four years, a sharp departure from the 28% average increase seen over the past two decades.

Additionally, S&P projects that Ghana’s public debt, net of liquid assets, will decline from 71.4% of GDP at end-2024 to 47.4% by 2028.

Interest expenditure, once a crippling 48% of government revenue in 2021-2022, has fallen to about 25% following the debt restructuring.

Inflation, though still above target, is expected to ease gradually as monetary policy credibility improves.

The upgrade by S&P is a strong signal to the international investor community and development partners that Ghana is turning a crucial corner.

While acknowledging lingering risks, including election-year spending pressures and external vulnerabilities, S&P notes that Ghana’s improving external metrics, steady policy reforms, and supportive growth outlook justify the new, higher rating.

Reggie Zippy Shocks Fans by Renouncing Catholic Faith After Cardinal Turkson’s Papal Defeat

Ghanaian highlife musician Reggie Zippy has sent shockwaves through religious and entertainment circles by publicly renouncing his Catholic faith, citing disillusionment over Ghana’s Cardinal Peter Turkson’s failure to become Pope in the recent Vatican conclave.

According To Yen, A Faith Crisis Goes Viral

The “Aben Wo Ha” hitmaker announced his decision in an emotional Instagram live session, where he tore his rosary and declared: “If the Church couldn’t recognize Cardinal Turkson’s worth, then it’s not my Church anymore.”The video, viewed over 200,000 times within hours, sparked fierce debates about faith and disappointment.

Turkson’s Narrow Miss

Cardinal Turkson, considered Africa’s strongest papal contender in modern history, lost to European candidate Cardinal Matteo Zuppi in a closely fought election last month. While many Ghanaians expressed pride in Turkson’s global impact, Zippy’s extreme reaction highlighted deeper frustrations among some African Catholics.

Religious leaders urged calm, with Father Andrew Campbell stating: *”Faith transcends individuals—we shouldn’t abandon 2,000 years of tradition over one election.”* However, some young fans supported Zippy, with #ChurchReform trends emerging on Twitter.

Industry Backlash

Fellow musicians expressed concern. Artists influence youth—this could start a dangerous trend,” cautioned veteran singer Akosua Agyapong. Meanwhile, secular activists applauded Zippy’s “bold stand against institutional bias.”

What’s Next for Zippy?

The musician hinted at exploring traditional African spirituality, telling followers: “Maybe our ancestors’ ways hold better answers.” As Ghana’s Christian majority grapples with this unexpected celebrity faith crisis, one thing is clear—the intersection of religion and celebrity culture just got more complicated.

Two women kidnapped in Nigeria safely returned to Ghana

0

The two Ghanaian women who were reportedly lured to Nigeria through a romance scam and subsequently held captive by a criminal syndicate have been safely returned to Accra.

The victims — Evelyn Serwaa Konadu and Anatasia Baidoo arrived safely at the Kotoka International Airport earlier on Friday, May 9, 2025.

“Both women are in stable condition and will receive the necessary medical care. They will also go through standard police procedures to assist with ongoing investigations,” the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department of Ghana Police, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor said at a press briefing.

She cautioned the public about a growing trend of online fraud, particularly romance scams, urging Ghanaians to be cautious when interacting with strangers online.

“We advise the public to refrain from sharing personal or financial information with unknown persons and to report any suspicious behavior to the police immediately,” she added.

“Our deepest gratitude goes to the Nigeria Police Force and the National Signals Bureau for their invaluable support and cooperation,” she said.

What happened?

How 2 Ghanaian women were tricked with marriage to ‘white men’ and kidnapped in Nigeria

Before they were rescued, a disturbing video of one of them bound with a rope and being physically assaulted by unidentified individuals was shared on social media.

Investigations later confirmed that the woman in the video was a Ghanaian national who had been deceived into traveling to Nigeria under the false pretense of a romantic relationship.

Upon arrival, she was abducted, assaulted and the footage was sent to her family with a ransom demand.

Further police investigations revealed that a second Ghanaian woman had also been lured to the same location by the same criminal group.

Both victims were held at the same premises and subjected to similar abuse.

Families of the two women were said to have made partial ransom payments before police intervention led to their rescue.

The successful rescue operation was a result of a joint effort involving the Ghana Police Service, the Nigeria Police Force, and the National Signals Bureau.
