NkrumahFest 2025: ” The Spirit of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah never dies”

0

By Godwill Arthur- Mensah

Accra, Aug 4, GNA-The Second edition of Nkrumah Festival (NkrumahFest), was launched over the weekend at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra, to commemorate Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s 116th birthday, on the theme: “Celebrating Nkrumah’s Enduring Impact.”

The week-long celebration, starting from September 15th to 21st, 2025, will witness a pilgrimage of people from Accra to Nkroful, the birthplace of Nkrumah, to learn the vision and values of Ghana’s first President.

There are a number of activities lined-up to mark the “NkrumahFest and Journey to Nkroful,”  including a clean-up exercises in the township of Nkroful from September 15th to 16th, Osagyefo Soccer Cup on 18th September, a public symposium, a candle night carnival, and a durbar of chiefs.

There would also be a visit to historic sites in Nkroful and adjoining communities, and the cutting of cake on 21st September to mark Nkrumah’s 116th birthday anniversary as a climax of the celebration.

Nana Kobina Nketsia V, the Paramount Chief of Essikadu Traditional Area, who chaired the function, said: “The more we celebrate Nkrumah, the more we know that Africa will certainly rise again.”

He observed that while Nkrumah was alive, he often addressed ordinary people on the street and close associates as “comrade” and that the word comrade did not discriminate and distinguish among persons.

He urged Africans, both home and abroad, to work consciously to build an “African Personality” that was economically and politically independent and determined to add value to the natural resources.

The revered traditional leader and historian, referenced Dr Nkrumah’s quote: “I’m not African because I was born in Africa, but Africa is born in me” to reinforce Dr Nkrumah’s strong conviction about his African personality.

Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the Convenor of Nkrumah Festival and Member of Parliament for Ellembele, said Dr Nkrumah’s principles and ideals continue to inspire hope and shape African dreams, and underscored the need for Africans to work with a sense of purpose to turn the fortunes of the people for the better.

“This annual celebration of Ghana’s founder has been a key priority in my routines as a politician, and I am glad that in our shared appreciation of the great Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, whose name is not only etched in stone but woven into the very soul of our nation, we can stand on his shoulders and celebrate him,”Mr Buah  added.

“Kwame Nkrumah did not merely seek independence; he redefined it. It was not just a political struggle but a revolution of the mind. As he famously declared: ‘We face neither East nor West; we face forward.’

“His unyielding defiance against colonial oppression was not without cost. He faced imprisonment, betrayal, and relentless opposition. Yet, through it all, he stood unshaken, because he understood that freedom is never given; it is taken by the bold,” he emphasized.

He said Dr Nkrumah’s “legacy never dies, but he died of the cancer of betrayal” and urged all Africans to unite to make meaningful impact in their communities.

He stated that it was Dr Nkrumah’s ambition to liberate Ghana and Africa from economic bondage and urged the current generation to be inspired by Nkrumah’s values of selflessness, hardwork and self-determination to make meaningful impact in every sector of the economy.

Mr Armah-Kofi Buah, also the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, underscored the need for Africans to unite towards economic and mindset emancipation in order to make a headway towards improving their socio-economic fortunes.

Madam Dzifa Abla Gomashie, the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, observed that Ghana and Africa’s greatest enemy was poverty and disunity, and, therefore, urged Africans to work to liberate themselves from poverty and mental slavery.

“NkrumahFest is to re-ignite the fire of the dream that once set Africa ablaze. “Nkrumah never dies.”

This year’s launch attracted a long list of Members of Parliament and government appointees, including Madam Dorcas Affo-Toffey, the Deputy for Transport Minister, and the MP for Jomoro, Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah, Deputy Minister for Health, and MP for Essikado-Ketan, Mr Akwasi Opong-Fosu, the Board Chairman of GIPC, and Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority.

Artistes who have sampled Daddy Lumba’s classic songs

0

From L to R: R2Bees, Joey B and Lord Paper are some musicians who have sampled songs from Lumba From L to R: R2Bees, Joey B and Lord Paper are some musicians who have sampled songs from Lumba

Only few Ghanaian musicians can of boast of a music catalog as influential as that of the late Highlife legend, Daddy Lumba.

Nearly four decades and he has ‘poured out’ thirty-four albums and many more groundbreaking contributions to the Ghanaian Highlife sound.

His voice, lyrics, and melodies dominated the Highlife era and beyond, making him, if not the greatest, one of the greatest musicians to ever come out of Ghana.

But what is even more fascinating is how his music inspires a new generation of artistes.

Overtime, these musicians have not only paid homage to the late Lumba but also reintroduced his iconic sound to younger audiences through sampling.

With that being said, let’s a look at some instances some new-generation artistes have sampled Daddy Lumba’s classics.

1. “Aben Wo Ha” lives on, multiple samples over the years

One of Daddy Lumba’s most iconic songs, “Aben Wo Ha”, originally released in 1998, has enjoyed a

‘second life’ thanks to some new-age musicians.

In December 2018, record producer Master Garzy sampled the track for his song “Anadwo Yede”, which featured KiDi, Kuami Eugene, and Kurl Songz.

The track fused elements of the original Highlife groove with a modern Afrobeats feel, creating a nostalgic sound for fans.

But this was not the first time “Aben Wo Ha” got a modern twist.

Back in 2016, UK-based Ghanaian Afropop artiste Wusu teamed up with the production collective Team Salut to create a high-energy track titled “Lumba”, which sampled “Aben Wo Ha.”

2. Joey B’s “Princess” and the flip of “Mensei Da”

The late Highlife legend released “Mensei Da” in 1992, and nearly three decades later, Ghanaian rapper Joey B sampled it in his own way.

His song “Princess” flipped the original of Lumba’s Mensei Da blending elements of Highlife with his laid-back rap delivery.

3. Lord Paper’s tribute with “Asabone”

In 1990, the late Daddy Lumba dropped his second album, “Obi Ate Meso Bo”, which had the song “Ankwanoma” on that album.

In 2020, Lord Paper paid tribute with “Asabone,” a song heavily inspired by “Ankwanoma”. Lord Paper’s song featured Bosom PYung, and stood out for its nostalgic feel.

4. Bree Runway brings “Dangerous” back to life

Daddy Lumba’s twelveth album, released in 1998, included the track “Dangerous.”

Years later, UK-based alt-pop and rap musician Bree Runway gave this classic a revival with her song “Big Borga.”

Bree Runway fused the rhythm of “Dangerous” with her own style, making a song that appealed to both Highlife fans and younger listeners worldwide.

5. R2Bees revive “Se Wo Da Ento Pono Mu” on ‘Eboso’

The same 1998 album that gave audience and music lovers “Aben Wo Ha” and “Dangerous” also featured “Se Wo Da Ento Pono Mu.”

This song, Se Wo Da Ento Pono Mu, became the foundation for R2Bees’ 2021 hit song “Eboso” off their album Back 2 Basics.

Why This Matters: A legacy that won’t fade

What makes these special is not just the act of sampling but the respect and creativity behind them.

By sampling the late Daddy Lumba’s music, these artistes have kept his legacy alive, introducing his specialty to younger audiences who may never have experienced his original hits.

At least 10 people were injured on Sunday afternoon following a fire outbreak at Ritz Junction in Madina, which escalated into chaos after an armed man allegedly opened fire on bystanders.

In an adomonline.com report on August 4, 2025, it said one of the victims, Ernest Opare, who is currently receiving treatment at the Pentecost Hospital, along with four others, confirmed the incident.

He said he sustained bullet wounds to his forehead, back, and buttocks.

According to Opare, the gunman, identified only as Area, appeared at the scene in a furious state and brandished a pump-action gun.

“In the full view of police and fire officers, Area began shooting indiscriminately at people and into the air,” he recounted, the report said.

He accused the police present of failing to act, alleging they did not intervene or arrest the suspect despite witnessing the attack.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear.

Meanwhile, the fire caused widespread destruction, burning down more than 50 wooden structures and metal containers, and displacing several residents.

The blaze reportedly started at a washing bay.

Officers from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), led by personnel from the Madina Fire Station, responded swiftly and worked to bring the flames under control.

Authorities are, however, yet to issue an official statement on the shooting incident.

FDA Halts Tasty Tom Production

0

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has suspended the manufacture of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix with immediate effect, citing major safety infractions at the production facility of Nutrifoods Ghana Limited.

In a press release issued on August 3, 2025, the FDA confirmed that the decision follows consumer complaints and an extensive investigation at the company’s manufacturing plant, which revealed significant lapses in equipment maintenance and quality monitoring systems.

The regulator said these deficiencies compromised the sealing of canned products, resulting in bloating and contamination, particularly in the 380g and 1.05kg pouch variants. Some samples were found to contain mold, raising serious health concerns.

“A market recall of all canned Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix products, and specific batches of the pouches, had earlier been directed by the FDA,” the statement read.

According to the FDA, the suspension is intended to protect public health after it became clear that the plant’s poor equipment maintenance and ineffective oversight mechanisms were endangering consumers. These failures directly undermined the integrity of the food products, rendering them unfit for consumption.

More troubling, the FDA disclosed that Nutrifoods Ghana Limited had previously been barred from producing the same product as far back as January 2025. The agency has now launched an internal investigation to determine if regulatory lapses within its own oversight mechanisms allowed the company to resume operations contrary to earlier directives.

“In line with the FDA’s commitment to transparency and accountability, internal investigations have commenced to ascertain if there were regulatory lapses… Any dereliction of duty identified will be swiftly dealt with in order to strengthen the FDA’s regulatory oversight,” the statement added.

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the FDA, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Manso Opuni, who signed the release, urged consumers, wholesalers, and retailers to take note of the suspension and comply with all recall instructions.

The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to rigorous enforcement of food safety standards and pledged to maintain strict oversight to safeguard public health.

College of Physicians and Surgeons to host 3rd Public Lecture on August 6

0

The Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons is set to host its 3rd Public Lecture under the theme “Building a Resilient Healthcare System That Works for All.”

The 2025 lecture will focus on strengthening the health workforce, funding postgraduate medical education, and addressing the critical question: “Healthcare service provision—who pays?”

The event forms part of the College’s broader goal of engaging the public on pressing national health issues and shaping policy through open dialogue.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, August 4, 2025, Professor Henry Lawson, Vice-Rector of the College, emphasized the importance of making the College’s work more visible.

“When you do good things and you don’t tell anybody about it, it’s as if only you know what you’re doing. But the nation feels it—especially when they go to see a doctor,” he noted. “For example, during COVID, we saw the impact of having specialists. That’s why we are coming out with relevant topics that resonate with the public.”

Professor Lawson highlighted the success of previous lectures, such as one on skin bleaching two years ago and another on road accidents last year.

“These public lectures allow the College to engage the public on issues of concern, with the long-term goal of benefiting society,” he added.

Dr. Perez Sepenu, Chairman of the Lecture Committee, said this year’s topic was chosen to stir national reflection.

“There is a perceived problem in our healthcare system. Many Ghanaians lack confidence in it. The political elite often seek care abroad, sometimes with public funds, because they believe we lack specialized care locally,” he said.

“Even where specialized care exists, the lack of equipment limits timely interventions. Meanwhile, the average Ghanaian is left to struggle within an overstretched and underfunded system. We want this lecture to spark a rethink of how our healthcare system can work for all—from the elite to the average person on the street.”

Dr. Louisa Ademki Matey, a member of the committee, called for a national conversation around funding postgraduate medical education.

“Government is currently the sole funder of postgraduate medical training. Can we explore contributions from individuals, corporate bodies, NGOs? We want to inspire a mindset shift when it comes to supporting medical education,” she stated.

The public lecture will feature distinguished speakers, including:

  • Prof. Kwamina Panford, Fulbright Scholar and Triple Carnegie Africa Diaspora Fellow

  • Dr. Victor Bampoe, CEO of the National Identification Authority (NIA)

  • Dr. Edem Hiadzi, CEO of Lister Hospital and Fertility Centre

The lecture is expected to draw health professionals, policymakers, academics, civil society actors, and the public into a timely conversation on building a health system that is inclusive, sustainable, and future-ready.

Police CID recovers 43 stolen luxury vehicles imported into Ghana from January to July

0

File photo of luxury vehicles File photo of luxury vehicles

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has recovered a total of 43 high-value luxury vehicles that were stolen from abroad and smuggled into Ghana between January and July 2025, as part of intensified efforts to combat transnational vehicle crime.

Addressing a press briefing in Accra on August 4, 2025, the Director-General of the CID, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, attributed the success to close cooperation with the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority and international partners including Interpol, Digipol, and the FBI.

The recovered vehicles include Rolls-Royce, Audi, Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz models, which were traced to thefts in the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Canada, the USA, Germany, Italy, and France.

Out of the 43 vehicles, investigations have been concluded on 18, with the courts ordering their repatriation to their countries of origin.

COP Donkor revealed that eight have already been repatriated, while 10 are pending repatriation.

The remaining 25 cases are still in court.

“We share intelligence on vehicles stolen abroad and imported into the country, as well as transnational organised criminal groups involved in the stolen motor vehicle trade and related crimes like money laundering, insurance fraud, identity theft, Visa card fraud, among other transnational crimes,” she said.

She stressed the importance of due diligence, noting that importers often fail to prove legitimate ownership.

“It is sad to note that in almost all the cases mentioned above, those who clear the vehicles in Ghana are unable to provide proof of ownership or purchase of the vehicles from the country of origin prior to their importation into Ghana. Let me indicate here that payment of customs duties in Ghana does not mean that the vehicle was legitimately acquired from the country of origin,” she cautioned.

To sustain the fight against this growing threat, the CID said it has established a special task force to carry out intelligence-led operations. This task force has already impounded an additional six vehicles suspected to have been stolen; four Toyota Tundras, one Toyota RAV4, and one Range Rover, all traced to Canada.

COP Donkor explained that criminal syndicates use several tactics to smuggle cars out of foreign countries, including renting vehicles with fake identities, disabling tracking systems, or fraudulently purchasing vehicles on hire purchase terms and defaulting.

“Others also buy and import the luxurious vehicles as a way of laundering illicit profits, apart from the criminal acts like romance fraud and extortion. Sadly, some innocent citizens fall victim and purchase vehicles that have been stolen from abroad,” she lamented.

The CID Director-General therefore urged the public to exercise greater caution when buying imported vehicles.

“I want to take this opportunity to advise all citizens who want to purchase vehicles, particularly those imported from abroad, to go beyond requesting for the customs documents and demand from the importers some proof of purchase or ownership of the vehicle prior to its importation into the country,” she advised.

FIFA approves GFA’s move to extend presidential term limit to three

GFA President Kurt Okrkau (M) during an ExCo meeting GFA President Kurt Okrkau (M) during an ExCo meeting

World football’s governing body, Federation of International Football Association (FIFA), has officially approved a request from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to increase the presidential term limit from two to three terms.

This change will bring Ghana’s football leadership structure in line with FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Previously, the GFA president could only serve two terms in office, even though other members of the Executive Council, of which the president is a part, were permitted to serve up to three terms.

This long-standing contradiction in the GFA’s statutes is now on course to be corrected, following years of consultations and formal procedures.

According to GFA General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo, the idea did not originate from the Association’s leadership but from its broader membership.

“The decision to extend the GFA presidential term in office was proposed by clubs, RAG leadership, and other bodies that are all members of congress.

“The decision was not made by GFA, and this proposal to extend the mandate of the president was made three years ago,” he told Asempa FM.

This means the committee started work by reviewing all the proposals submitted by members.

To ensure inclusiveness, it issued an open invitation for input from across the football pyramid, including clubs in the Ghana Premier League, Division One League, Women’s Premier League, and the Regional Football Associations (RFAs).

The proposal to extend the presidential term limit is expected to be formally tabled at the next GFA Congress, scheduled for Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

If it receives the required support, the change will officially be enshrined in the GFA’s governing documents, opening the door for any sitting or future president to serve up to three terms in office.

NPP Conference 2025 A Success, But Was There ‘An Elephant In The Room’?

0

When on July 29, 2025, main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) opened nominations for its presidential primary, it marked another definitive move in its Election 2028 campaign, following its Annual National Delegates Conference.

Notably, the conference had been preceded by a surprise announcement about the presidential primary date.

On June 17, 2025 the NPP National Executive Committee sprang what for some was a bombshell, that this time, the presidential primary would be held early, on January 31, 2026, not later, as had been the norm. Nominations will close on August 28.

Announcing the early primary decision, General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, had stated that it was endorsed by the party’s National Council and did not require a constitutional amendment or further approval.

By many accounts the 2025 conference of the party whose symbol, incidentally, is an elephant, was a huge success, for which the organising committee, chaired by former Bekwai MP Joe Osei Owusu, has been commended.

Still, though no pun is intended, it appears that at the conference there was an ‘elephant in the room’.

The English idiom, ‘elephant in the room’ is explained as “a major problem or controversial issue which is obviously present but is avoided as a subject for discussion.

So, was there truly such a situation at the NPP conference, themed ‘Rebuilding together with our values’ and held on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at the University of Ghana stadium, Legon?

To me, indeed there was!

I believe that trouble might have been expected, because some dissenting NPP members had sworn publicly to have the January date included on the agenda so that it would be voted on and decisively rejected.

Discontent over the early primary was reportedly based on the belief that choosing the presidential candidate so early would give some aspirants an unfair advantage over other prospectives who need more time to market themselves; and was also not the convention.

They have scornfully described it as a ‘top to bottom’ approach, illustrating with the analogy that ‘one doesn’t start building a house from the roof; one constructs the foundation first.’

Furthermore, they have made their views known stridently. A GhanaWeb June 20, 2025 article quoted former flagbearer aspirant Francis Addai Nimo as saying that “a lot of the party faithful are not happy about the 31st January date.”

Others quoted in that article included Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, also a former flagbearer hopeful, who “suggested that the decision was made to serve certain selfish interests within the party … It is total nonsense.”

MP for Mpraeso Davis Opoku: “It doesn’t make sense… How do you put into motion a presidential campaign when the party’s base is about to change?”

Dr Amoako Baah, a senior political scientist: “If you don’t study it carefully, you will not know that someone is behind this. (Former President) Nana Akufo-Addo is behind this, most likely, and he wants certain things to happen, but they will not succeed. …the devil has taken over our party.”

However, Nii Ayikoi Otoo a former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, presented other, measured, aspects. In an interview published in the Daily Graphic of June 25, he said it seemed to him that the party’s leadership needed to educate and engage more.

“To some, where a flagbearer is elected before other elections of party executives at all levels are done, that changes what they are used to.

“Some even believe that approach leads to the person elected practicing favouritism and nepotism, using only a small group to run the affairs of the party, especially his campaign team … which will deepen the cracks in the party.

Mr. Otoo explained further that:”… the justification (is) that when the flagbearer is elected early, he will be like an opposition leader who will speak on national issues on behalf of the party.”

He added: “the other view is that nothing had really changed” with the announcement of an early presidential primary “two years before the general election in 2028 since we are in opposition.

“Moreover, the four year-year mandate given to the current party executive would not have expired by January, 2026, and therefore, the party leadership at every level would still be in office by January 2026 and would be voting to select the flagbearer.”

Yet, curiously, despite the threats, as far as l could make out, not a word about that matter was voiced at the Legon conference!

But had the organisers been aware of the threat? Richard Ahiagbah, NPP Director of Communications told me: “We heard the threat but there was no way Conference would have entertained anything of the sort.”

Mr. Ahiagbah added: “The date of the presidential primaries was not a matter before the National Conference. The date remains as decided by the National Council, January 31st…

“Article 10 of our party constitution regulates the business of the National Delegates Conference and stipulates the matters to be considered,” he said.

Given that clear position, I’m wondering whether those making threats did not know that the subject could not even feature on the agenda.

Was it a matter of poor information flow, ignorance of the rules, or deliberate mischief? Puzzling, to say the least!

For the record, the conference, attended by more than 5000 delegates, including overseas branches, voted and agreed on some significant constitutional amendments.

As reported by Citinewsroom, the party “announced a major amendment to its internal electoral structure, expanding the Electoral College that will select its presidential candidate for the 2028 general election.

Accordingly, the new Electoral College will now include:

* All former Members of Parliament

* All former parliamentary candidates

* All former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives

* All card-bearing former ministers and deputy ministers

* All former regional, constituency, and branch executives

* All members of the National Council of Elders and National Council of Patrons

* Regional and constituency patrons and elders, and,

* All Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) coordinators.

So far, identified flagbearer aspirants are: Dr Bawumia; Kennedy Agyapong; Dr Yaw Osei-Adutwum; Dr Bryan Acheampong and Kwabena Agyepong.

Evidently, the landslide Election 2024 win for then candidate John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), means that whoever becomes the NPP’s 2028 flagbearer, the party needs a lot more time and effort to regroup and restrategise to try and wrestle power from the ruling NDC.

Therefore, it seems to me that choosing the 2028 presidential candidate early is a good idea.

It should help focus the party’s energy on the battle ahead, instead of the many divisions and distractions. Currently, the war of disparagements of other hopefuls by rival supporters, presents the NPP in a very ugly image. And evidently this can’t contribute to any electoral victory.

Ironically, when they meet in public, there is no such animosity among the flagbearer hopefuls.

But who knows what their camps tell, or signal their followers behind the scenes?

Besides, the suggestion that some of the hopefuls need more time to make themselves and their ideas known to the delegates sounds somewhat strange to me. Surely by now they, as well as their proposed policies, are known to the delegates!

Critics have made no secret of their concern that an early primary will benefit the former Vice President, Dr, Mahamudu Bawumia, and that the decision has been taken to favour him.

However, the party leaders insist that nothing has been done to give anybody an advantage.

It appears that in the opponents’ view, their defeat in Election 2024 was because the country doesn’t want Dr, Bawumia as President, so he shouldn’t even contest for 2028.

Conversely, Dr, Bawumia’s supporters argue that there are no findings that support this view; that the defeat was mainly due to the apathy of the aggrieved over two million NPP members who refused to vote. To them, a plus is that the country already knows Bawumia, and his achievements.

If, as his opponents are claiming, Dr, Bawumia was really the reason for the party’s unprecedented defeat, would the delegates themselves not know that? Clearly if the delegates, too, have the same opinion as Dr, Bawumia’s opponents, then an early primary would in no way help him because the defeat agony would still be fresh in the minds of the delegates.

Or, does their hostility rather stem from fear of the Bawumia appeal? Another elephant in the room?

Anyhow, my belief is that whoever emerges as NPP flagbearer will be determined to work hard to unite the party, aiming to bring everybody on board, haunted and driven by the 2024 historic defeat.

Furthermore, if after a flagbearer has been chosen, disgruntled elements decide to work against their own party, or even opt out because their candidate lost, they should obviously not be considered real, committed party members.

Then undoubtedly their allegiance is for an individual, and not the NPP.

And surely, loyalty and commitment are what sustain and power parties to victory. Anyway, one hopes that the Legon outcomes, and deeper reflection, have helped to change the ‘elephant in the room’ situation.

An elephant should remain a symbol of positive attributes for the party, including strength, wisdom, stability, good fortune, peace and achievement; and only seen on the NPP flag, not in their room.

Daddy Lumba Was Friend Of The Press – Freddie Blay

0

Freddie Blay

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, was moved to tears as he paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Ghanaian music icon Daddy Lumba, describing him as “a friend of the press” and “an icon of wisdom and emotion through music.”

Speaking to the media during his visit to Daddy Lumba’s home, Mr. Blay, who is also a former First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, recalled several personal encounters with the legendary musician, whose real name was Charles Kwadwo Fosu. He praised Lumba’s immense impact on the country’s cultural and musical landscape.

“Daddy Lumba was all of our Daddy Lumba,” he began, visibly emotional. “I remember a couple of times he came to meet me in my office—my law firm. Sometimes, he would visit the Daily Guide offices, and I’d meet him there. He was a friend of the press.”

Mr. Blay described Lumba’s music as deeply resonant, especially among the Akan-speaking community, but noted that it was also widely appreciated by non-Akans across Ghana.

“His music, you will all agree, spoke to us in various forms. If you were sad, he consoled you. If you were happy, he rejoiced with you. If you needed wisdom or wanted to reflect on life, he was there. He even spoke of death… and sadly, that is what has happened to him. A good man. A great guy. An icon in his own right,” he said.

When asked about his favourite Daddy Lumba song, the former lawmaker cited “Se Wose Kete Bae Mu”, a track known for its rich use of proverbs and philosophical undertones. He also fondly mentioned another song with the lyric: “Mɛyɛ nea mɛtumi, mmerɛ n’aba a mɛkɔ” — meaning “I will do what I can; when my time is up, I will go.”

He reflected on how that particular song influenced him during his time in constituency politics.

“About 10 or 15 years ago, I heard that song and it stayed with me. I was in politics then, going through tough times, and people questioned why I bothered. I said it’s my responsibility—to do what I can. And when my time comes, I’ll go. That’s life,” he recounted.

Overcome with emotion, Blay’s eyes welled up as he shared his final thoughts on Lumba’s passing:

“Great people sometimes don’t last. For someone like him, you wish he could have stayed a bit longer so Ghana, West Africa, and the world could continue to benefit from his greatness. Even with what he has left us, we thank God. We thank God for his life. It’s a pity… we would have loved for him to still be with us, but that is how life is,” Mr. Blay stated.

Daddy Lumba, whose passing was announced on July 26, 2025, is widely regarded as one of Ghana’s greatest musicians, known for his lyrical depth, musical range, and cultural influence spanning over four decades.

Award-winning Ghanaian hip hop artist, Bashir Annan, popularly known as Gambo, paid a heartfelt tribute to the late iconic Ghanaian Highlife legend, Daddy Lumba, during Davido’s concert in Philadelphia, USA.

Gambo, who is currently touring the United States with Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido, paused his performance at Philadelphia’s Liacouras Center on Saturday, August 2, to honor Daddy Lumba — real name Charles Kwadwo Fosu — who passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the age of 60.

Gambo held a candle light at the 10,000 seating capacity Liacouras Center in honour of the legendary Daddy Lumba.

Born on September 29, 1964, in Nsuta, Daddy Lumba was the son of Johnson Kwadwo Fosuh and Ama Saah.

He rose to fame as a trailblazer in the Ghanaian highlife scene, earning multiple Ghana Music Awards and influencing generations with his rich musical legacy.

Recognised as one of Ghana’s most influential Highlife musicians, Daddy Lumba’s music continues to resonate across the globe.

Gambo, who won the Unsung Artiste of the Year award at the 2022 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), has been opening for Davido on his ongoing “5IVE Tour” across the U.S.

Why Tasty Tom is trending

0

Tasty Tom products have been suspended by the FDA Tasty Tom products have been suspended by the FDA

Tasty Tom, one of the leading tomato mix brands in the country, has been trending on social media.

This follows the immediate suspension of its production by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) over safety concerns.

In its statement, the FDA cited serious health and safety issues raised by consumers who reported problems with the product’s quality.

The FDA also launched an investigation into the manufacturing facility of Nutrifoods Ghana Limited, producers of Tasty Tom.

This development came after the authority earlier recalled all canned Tasty Tom products, as well as specific batches of its pouch variants (380g and 1.05kg), from the market.

“The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has suspended the manufacture of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix with immediate effect. A market recall of all canned Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix products, and specific batches of the product in pouches (the 380g and 1.05kg pouches) was earlier directed by the FDA,” it noted in an August 3, 2025, release.

This development has sparked widespread reactions and concerns among Ghanaian netizens, who are calling out Nutrifoods for what they believe is endangering the lives of consumers through its products — particularly the Tasty Tom Tomato Mix.

While some netizens have commended the FDA for its swift intervention, others have criticised the authority for what they believe were delays — citing timelines of when they first noticed issues with the product.

According to them, the negative side effects potentially associated with the recalled products could be highly damaging, despite the FDA’s intervention.

Other netizens have also called on the FDA to investigate other consumer products manufactured by Nutrifoods, in order to prevent a recurrence of this situation.

Rubber Traders Demand Fair Pricing

0

Some raw rubber being conveyed from a farm

The Rubber Cupslumps Traders and Aggregators Association of Ghana (RUCTAAG) has criticised the local rubber processing factories for their alleged unwillingness to offer reasonable price for the raw product.

RUCTAAG members serve as middlemen who purchase the raw rubber directly from the farmers and sell them as raw materials to the processing factories in the country.

Aside that, the members stimulate production by supporting rubber farmers with requisite inputs, tappers and provide transportation from the farm gates to the buying centres at their own cost.

They, are therefore, unhappy that the local processing factories have decided not to purchase the raw rubber from the traders at what they termed as fair price.

According to them, the traders and aggregators buy the raw rubber from the farmers at a cost of GH¢6,700 per tonne and expected that the factories will also buy from them at a higher price because of transportation and other costs.

However, speaking to DAILY GUIDE the President of RUCTAAG, Bismark Yilaku Essuman, noted that the local factories insist they will not pay anything higher than the farm price of GH¢6,700 per tonne.

He revealed that most of the rubber processing factories are without their own Plantation. He said even those who have plantations, their raw products cannot meet one third of their factories’ capacity.

“So most of the factories depend on the supply from the traders and aggregators,” he pointed out.

He noted that because of the transportation and other costs incurred by RUCTAAG members before the raw rubber reaches the local processors, they expected the factories to buy from the traders at a price of GH¢8,000 or GH¢9000 per tonne of raw rubber.

“But unfortunately, the factories have decided not to pay that fair price.  So the traders now prefer exporting the products rather than supplying to local processors”, he noted.

“This because rubber trading business among local processors is unprofitable and hence, no business can operate under that circumstance”, he noted.

He said another challenge faced by rubber traders is the delay in payment by some of the processing factories when supply is made to them.

“So it is not true that the traders are only interested in exporting the raw product as some of the factories have asserted. But it is because the local processors have turned deaf ears to the traders’ genuine concerns”, he stressed.

He said but for the support from the traders which include supply of inputs, most of the rubber farmers would have cut down their rubber trees for illegal mining or galamsey activities.

“It is therefore refreshing to note that the Tree Crop Development Authority (TCDA) is taking steps to license and regulate the rubber industry to protect all actors  including farmers and the traders”, he added.

“Give me 8 years, I will beat Nkrumah’s record” – Ken Agyapong tells Ghanaians

0

Kennedy Agyapong, the former member of parliament for Assin Central and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged Ghanaians to give him eight years in power, and he will break Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s records.

According to Kennedy Agyapong, the late Dr Kwame Nkrumah, in just 9 years, had done what no president has been able to match in Ghana’s political history.

NPP MP ‘blames’ President Mahama for skipping pre-sitting meetings

Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has blamed President John Dramani Mahama for his inability to attend parliamentary pre-sittings.

According to the MP, since Mahama assumed office as President under the National Democratic Congress (NDC), economic conditions have worsened, making it difficult for him to afford transport fare to attend pre-sitting meetings.

During parliamentary proceedings on July 30, 2028, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, questioned the Weija-Gbawe MP on his repeated absence from pre-sitting meetings.

In response, Jerry Shaib told the Speaker that the economic hardship under the current administration has made it nearly impossible for him to afford transportation to the chamber.

“Mr Speaker, sometimes it is a matter of lorry fare. Since this government came into office, it has been very difficult for me to even get money for lorry fare. So, Mr Speaker, that is the situation,” he stated.

The Speaker, in a sarcastic tone, acknowledged the MP’s explanation but reminded him that Members of Parliament were given vehicles on loan, loans which are already being deducted from their salaries.

He expressed disbelief that transport should still be a challenge.

“Hon Jerry Ahmed, you have a very legitimate point, legitimate point in the sense that deductions have started for the car loan, and yet the Honourable Member is still complaining about transport,” the Speaker noted.

Kankam Boadu warns musicians to stop recording tributes songs for Daddy Lumba

Kankam Boadu has cautioned musicians against recording tribute songs for Daddy Lumba Kankam Boadu has cautioned musicians against recording tribute songs for Daddy Lumba

Media personality Bright Kankam Boadu has advised Ghanaian musicians against recording tribute songs for the late Highlife legend, Daddy Lumba.

He believes the existing songs by the musician are more than enough to honour him, rather than releasing new songs that do not sound good.

Speaking on his show on Angel FM, Kankam Boadu explained that he has noticed some artistes have started recording tribute songs since the news of Daddy Lumba’s death broke.

However, according to him, the quality of these songs is not impressive and does not match the legacy of the legendary musician.

“Musicians should stop recording a tribute song for the late Daddy Lumba, as the tributes being produced do not even sound well. Daddy Lumba himself has many songs that could serve as tributes, such as ‘Makra Mo’ and ‘Adaka Tea,’” he said.

The media personality added that recently, he received a song from someone who claimed it was a tribute to Daddy Lumba.

He said after listening to it, he questioned whether the person believed the song was suitable for such a great musician.

“Recently, someone sent me a tribute song dedicated to Daddy Lumba because I’ve been discussing him a lot. After listening to it, I asked the person if they really thought this song was appropriate as a tribute for Daddy Lumba,” he stated.

Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, passed away on July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital in Accra.

A candlelight vigil was held on August 2, 2025, at the Independence Square to honor his memory.

Secret filming exposes the ‘madams’ involved in Kenya’s child-sex trade

0

A BBC Africa Eye investigation has revealed how women, known as “madams”, have involved children as young as 13 in prostitution in Kenya.

In the transit town of Maai Mahiu, in Kenya’s Rift Valley, trucks and lorries pound the streets day and night transporting goods and people across the country into Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The key transport hub, just 50km (31 miles) east of the capital, Nairobi, is known for prostitution, but it is also a breeding ground for child sexual abuse.

Two undercover investigators, posing as sex workers wanting to learn how to become madams, spent months earlier this year infiltrating the sex trade in the town.

Their secret filming reveals two different women who say they know it is illegal and then introduce the investigators to underage girls in the sex industry.

The BBC gave all its evidence to the Kenyan police in March. The BBC believes the madams have moved location since then. The police said the women and young girls we filmed could not be traced. To date there have been no arrests.

Convictions are rare in Kenya. For successful prosecutions, police need testimonies from children. Often vulnerable minors are too afraid to testify.

The BBC’s grainy footage filmed on the street in the dark showed one woman, who calls herself Nyambura, laughing as she says: “They’re still children, so it’s easy to manipulate them by just handing them sweets.”

“Prostitution is a cash crop in Maai Mahiu; the truckers basically fuel it. And that’s how we benefit. It’s been normalised in Maai Mahiu,” she explained, adding that she had one girl as young as 13, who had already been “working” for six months.

“It becomes very risky when you’re dealing with minors. You can’t just bring them out openly in town. I only sneak them out at night in great secrecy,” Nyambura said.

The act of prostitution by a consenting adult is not explicitly criminalised under Kenyan national law but it is banned by many municipal by-laws. It is not banned in Maai Mahiu, which is part of Nakuru county.

Under the penal code it is illegal to live from the earnings of prostitution, either as a sex worker or third party facilitating or profiting from prostitution.

The trafficking or sale of minors under the age of 18 carries a prison sentence ranging from 10 years to life.

When asked whether the clients wear condoms, Nyambura said she usually made sure they had protection but the odd one did not.

“Some children want to earn more [so don’t use them]. Some are forced [not to use them],” she said.

In another meeting, she led the undercover investigator to a house where three young girls sat huddled on a sofa, another on a hard-backed chair.

Nyambura then left the room, giving the investigator an opportunity to speak to the girls alone.

They described being repeatedly abused for sex, on a daily basis.

“Sometimes you have sex with multiple people. The clients force you to do unimaginable things,” said one of the girls.

There are no recent statistics on the number of children forced to work in Kenya’s sex industry. In 2012, the US State Department Country Report on Human Rights Practices in Kenya cited an estimate of 30,000, a figure derived from the Kenyan government and now defunct non-governmental organisation (NGO), Eradicate Child Prostitution in Kenya.

Other studies have focused on specific areas, especially along the country’s coast – known for its tourist resorts. A 2022 report for the NGO Global Fund to End Modern Slavery found almost 2,500 children were forced into sex work in Kilifi and Kwale counties.

A second undercover investigator gained the trust of a woman who called herself Cheptoo and had multiple meetings with her.

She said selling young girls meant she could “earn a living and be comfortable”.

“You carry out this kind of business in great secrecy because it is illegal,” she said.

“If anyone says they want a young girl, I ask them to pay me. We also have our regulars who always come back for them.”

Cheptoo took the undercover investigator to a club to meet four of her girls. The youngest said she was 13 years old. The others said they were 15.

She opened up about the profit she makes from them, saying for every 3,000 Kenyan shillings ($23; £17) the girls deliver, her share was 2,500 shillings ($19; £14).

At another meeting, in a house in Maai Mahiu, Cheptoo left the undercover investigator alone with two underage girls.

One of them told her she had, on average, sex with five men a day.

When asked what happened if she refused to have sex without a condom, she said she had no choice.

“I have to [have sex without a condom]. I will be chased away, and I have nowhere to run to. I am an orphan.”

Kenya’s sex industry is a complex, murky world where both men and women are involved in facilitating child prostitution.

It is not known how many children are forced into sex work in Maai Mahiu, but in this small town of around 50,000 people it is easy to find them.

A former sex worker, known as “Baby Girl”, now provides refuge in Maai Mahiu for girls who have escaped sexual abuse.

The 61-year-old worked in the sex industry for 40 years – first finding herself on the streets in her early twenties. She was pregnant and had her three young children with her after fleeing her husband because of domestic violence.

At her wooden kitchen table in a bright parlour at the front of her house, she introduced the BBC to four young women who were all forced into sex work by madams in Maai Mahiu when they were children.

Each girl shared similar stories of broken families or abuse at home – they came to Maai Mahiu to escape, only to be violently abused again.

Michelle described how, at 12 years old, she lost her parents to HIV and was evicted on to the streets where she met a man who gave her somewhere to live and began sexually abusing her.

“I literally had to pay him in kind for educating me. I reached my limit, but I had no-one,” she said.

Two years later, she was approached by a woman who turned out to be a madam in Maai Mahiu and forced her into sex work.

Lilian, who is now 19, also lost her parents at a very young age. She was left with an uncle who filmed her in the shower and sold the images to his friends. The voyeurism soon turned into rape.

“That was my worst day. I was 12 then.”

When she escaped, she was raped again by a truck driver who took her to Maai Mahiu. It was here, like Michelle, where she was approached by a woman who forced her into sex work.

These young women’s short lives have been fuelled by violence, neglect and abuse.

Now, housed by Baby Girl, they are learning new skills – two in a photography studio and two in a beauty salon.

They also assist Baby Girl with her outreach work in the community.

Nakuru county has one of the highest rates of HIV infection in Kenya, and Baby Girl, supported by US aid agency USAID, is on a mission to educate people about the risks of unprotected sex.

She has an office at Karagita Community Health Centre, near Lake Naivasha, where she works providing condoms and advice.

However, with US President Donald Trump’s decision to pull USAID funding, her outreach programmes are about to stop.

“From September we will be unemployed,” she told the BBC World Service, adding how worried she was about the young women and girls who depend on her.

“You see how vulnerable these children are. How would they survive on their own? They are still healing.”

The US government did not respond to comments in this investigation about the likely impact of its funding cuts. USAID officially closed last month.

For now, Lilian is focused on learning photography and recovering from abuse.

“I am not afraid any more, because Baby Girl is there for me,” she said. “She is helping us bury the past.”

Akwatia Constituency NDC Primaries Underway Today

0

Voting is currently underway in Ghana’s Akwatia Constituency as the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) selects its parliamentary candidate for the upcoming September 2 by-election.

Polls opened at 7:00 a.m. and will close at 4:00 p.m. across designated centres within the constituency.

Three aspirants are contesting the primary: Henry Boakye Yiadom, the party’s 2024 parliamentary candidate and a former Member of Parliament for Akwatia; Erasmus Koney Ali, popularly known as Asanka, a current assembly member and presiding member at the local Assembly; and lawyer Bernard Bediako Baidoo, a newcomer to the constituency’s parliamentary race.

The outcome will determine who represents the NDC in the by-election necessitated by the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, six months after the December 2024 general elections.

The Electoral Commission has officially set September 2, 2025, as the date for the parliamentary by-election in Akwatia.

The Timeless Appeal of the Men’s Fashion Blazer

0

In the ever-evolving world of men’s fashion, one garment has consistently stood the test of time: the blazer. A cornerstone of smart and semi-formal attire, the men’s fashion blazer is a versatile, stylish, and indispensable piece that bridges the gap between casual and formal dressing. Whether you’re heading to a business meeting, a dinner date, or a weekend outing, the right blazer can elevate your look and boost your confidence.

Unlike a suit jacket, which is typically part of a matching two- or three-piece ensemble, the blazer is a standalone piece. It offers more flexibility in styling and can be paired with various trousers, jeans, and even chinos. The modern blazer is designed to offer structure and style, often made from materials such as wool, cotton, linen, or blends depending on the season.

Blazers generally fall into two main categories: structured and unstructured. Structured blazers feature padding and lining to maintain their form and are ideal for more formal occasions. Unstructured blazers, on the other hand, are lighter, softer, and perfect for a laid-back, casual look.

There are several blazer styles, each with its own unique appeal:

1. Single-Breasted Blazer: This is the most common style, featuring a single row of buttons (usually one to three) and a narrow overlap of fabric. It’s suitable for both formal and casual occasions.

2. Double-Breasted Blazer: With two parallel rows of buttons and a wider overlap, the double-breasted blazer exudes a more traditional and elegant vibe. It is best suited for formal settings and pairs well with dress trousers.

3. Sport Coat: Often confused with the blazer, the sport coat is generally more casual, featuring patterns such as plaids or checks. It’s great for relaxed settings and weekend wear.

4. Tuxedo Blazer: Reserved for black-tie events, the tuxedo blazer typically features satin lapels and is worn with a bow tie and dress shirt.

Fabric plays a crucial role in how a blazer looks and feels. For colder months, wool and tweed blazers offer warmth and a classic appeal. In warmer seasons, lightweight fabrics like linen, cotton, or blends with a bit of stretch allow for breathability and comfort.

Velvet and corduroy blazers have also seen a resurgence in recent years, often used for stylish evening outings or creative workspaces where flair and individuality are appreciated.

How to Style a Blazer

The beauty of the blazer lies in its adaptability. Here are a few ways to style it:

Smart Casual: Pair a navy or grey blazer with a crisp white shirt, chinos, and loafers for an effortlessly smart look.

Business Casual: Wear a well-fitted blazer over a dress shirt, with tailored trousers and Oxfords or brogues.

Weekend Look: Combine an unstructured blazer with a T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers for a laid-back but polished appearance.

Evening Elegance: Opt for a black or deep burgundy velvet blazer over a dark shirt and slim trousers for a sophisticated evening outfit.

Fit is everything when it comes to blazers. A well-fitted blazer should hug your shoulders without being too tight, allow freedom of movement, and have sleeves that end just above the wrist bone. Tailoring can make a significant difference, transforming an average blazer into a sharp, tailored piece.

Final Thoughts: The men’s fashion blazer is more than just a wardrobe staple—it’s a symbol of versatility, elegance, and timeless style. Whether dressed up or down, a good blazer complements nearly every outfit and occasion. Investing in a few high-quality blazers in different colors and fabrics can open the door to countless styling options, ensuring that you’re always appropriately and fashionably dressed. As trends come and go, the blazer remains, proving its enduring place in every modern man’s wardrobe.

Nigerian singer 9ice, whose real name is Alexander Adegbola Akande, has revealed that he vomited blood for six months as a result of what he believes was a spiritual attack.

Speaking on The Nancy Isime Show, the Gongo Aso hitmaker said the incident occurred around 2009/2010 and was not due to any medical condition.

“I was vomiting blood for about six months in my own house. I had to leave. It wasn’t medical,” he said.

9ice explained that he eventually recovered after being referred to an Ifa priest, an experience that led to a significant shift in his beliefs.

“I’m not a Christian or a Muslim. I’m a traditionalist. I’m a Babalawo. I wish I had known about Ifa earlier,” he added.

He also referenced Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, noting that although Fela was mocked for his practice of traditional religion, he now understands him better.

9ice encouraged Africans to embrace traditional beliefs, saying they are an integral part of their identity.

Fela Died Poor,He Will Come Back From Show,Open A Box Of Money And Say“Anybody That Needs Take”-Made Kuti

0

Afrobeat musician Made Kuti has shared that his grandfather, the legendary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, passed away without wealth, despite having amassed considerable earnings during his lifetime.

During an appearance on the Tea With Tay Podcast, Made discussed the late icon’s financial lifestyle, explaining that Fela’s unwavering dedication to his beliefs and the well-being of those around him often came at a significant personal cost.

In his own words, he remarked, “He was broke. Fela died poor”. Made added, “Fela was the kind of person that when he made a bunch of cash, he had the kind of money that could have bought the whole of Pepple Street. But he will come back from a show in Kalakuta, open a box of money and say anybody that needs take.”

According to Made, there were times when Fela earned enough money to make major property acquisitions, such as being able to buy an entire street. However, rather than saving or investing it, he would return from performances and distribute the money among those in need, living communally and selflessly.

Fela’s financial choices reflected his values. He avoided materialism, rejected personal luxury, and shared his resources with the many individuals who lived and worked with him in the Kalakuta Republic. Though he achieved international acclaim for his music and activism, his consistent generosity, frequent clashes with the Nigerian government, and refusal to commercialize his work left him financially strained toward the end of his life.

Made’s reflections underscore that Fela’s enduring legacy is not rooted in wealth, but in the impact of his music, activism, and ideological commitment. Fela prioritized the collective good over personal gain, dedicating his money, energy, and time to the people and the messages he championed.

Today, Fela is remembered and celebrated worldwide. His legacy lives on through his children and grandchildren, who continue to promote Afrobeat and advocate for social consciousness.

Gov’t to announce new producer price for cocoa today

0

File photo: Cocoa farmers

Government is expected to announce a new producer price for cocoa for the 2025/2026 crop season today, August 4, 2025.

understands that the announcement will proceed following the completion of work by the various committees tasked with reviewing the pricing structure, as well as after extensive stakeholder consultations.

There are strong indications that the new price will reflect a significant increase in dollar terms.

However, uncertainty remains about the actual value of the new price in Ghana cedi terms, given the recent sharp appreciation of the cedi against the U.S. dollar over the past few months.

Currently, the producer price stands at GH¢3,100 per 64kg bag and GH¢49,600 per tonne.

Government is pressing ahead with the new pricing ahead of the official opening of the 2025/2026 cocoa season on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

President John Mahama, speaking last month, reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring cocoa farmers receive at least 70% of the world market price. He said this policy is aimed at restoring dignity and fairness to the farmers who form the backbone of Ghana’s agricultural economy.

As of last night, cocoa was trading at approximately $7,555 per tonne on the global market.

However, a major concern remains the real value of any increase in local currency terms, especially in light of government claims that it has been subsidising cocoa prices for the past five months, paying nearly 90% of the global market price directly to farmers.

Speaking on , Chief Executive of COCOBOD, Dr. Randy Abbey, expressed concern about how the cedi’s appreciation could impact farmers’ real incomes.

“What we are seeing now is a situation where global prices are high, and that would normally translate into higher incomes for our farmers. But with the cedi appreciating sharply, the gains could be reduced when translated into Ghana cedi,” Dr. Abbey explained.

Legendary Hiplife musician Reggie Rockstone has spoken after a fire broke out at the Accra Tourist Information Centre in the early hours of August 4, 2025.

The incident affected his popular food business, Rockz Waakye, which operates on the exact premises as the Accra Tourist Information Centre opposite Afrikiko.

The fire reportedly started around 1:00 AM and caused huge damage to parts of the facility, including Rockstone’s food outlet.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived at the scene and worked to bring the blaze under control.

While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed, eyewitnesses suggested it may have started in the kitchen area of Rockz Waakye.

Speaking after the incident in a video shared on his social media, Reggie Rockstone expressed gratitude for the support he has received from fans and the general public since news of the fire broke.

The veteran musician noted that although the damage was heavy, material things can be replaced, and he is thankful for life.

He also commended the GNFS for their swift response, noting that despite criticisms from some sections of society, the officers did their best to save the situation.

According to him, for now, operations at Rockz Waakye will be on hold as management assesses the extent of the damage and works on plans to resume business.

“We would like to begin by thanking all the love that’s being shown. I mean it’s been amazing people coming from everywhere far and wide to come and show love. Yes, there has been a fire, a pretty devastating fire. The good news is that no human being was harmed.

“Material stuff we don’t take with us when we check out so we give praise to God for this. As far as the damage, pretty heavy but we would like to take this time now to thank the Ghana Fire Service,” Reggie Rockstone stated.

Diddy’s ex-girlfriend asks judge for his release

Sean Combs, popularly known as P. Diddy or Puff Daddy Sean Combs, popularly known as P. Diddy or Puff Daddy

An ex-girlfriend of Sean “Diddy” Combs, who was supposed to testify against him in his criminal case but mysteriously dropped out days before the trial began, has written a letter to the judge pushing for Combs’ release on bail.

Virginia Huynh, who goes by “Gina,” was part of the prosecution’s case against Combs, initially anonymously referred to as “Victim-3.” But before the trial began, prosecutors alerted the court that while “Victim-3” was under subpoena to testify, they had lost touch with her and her attorney, and “she may not show up.”

Now, in their latest attempt to get Combs released on bail ahead of his sentencing, Combs’ defense has included a letter from “Victim-3,” who for the first time has identified herself by name.

In the letter, Huynh wrote to the judge that she does not believe Combs is a danger to the community and he is a committed family man “who has not been violent in many years.”

Huynh’s letter was included as an exhibit in the defense’s latest filing, their reply to the prosecution’s opposition to releasing Combs on bail ahead of his sentencing, which is set for October 3.

Combs was convicted by a jury last month on two charges of transpiration to engage in prostitution but acquitted on more serious charges which would have put him behind bars for decades or for life: racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking.

In the letter, Huynh said she has known Combs for years, both professionally and personally. She acknowledged her relationship with the disgraced mogul “was not always perfect,” but “he was willing to acknowledge his mistakes and make better decisions in the future.”

“By the time our relationship ended, he embodied an energy of love, patience and gentleness that was markedly different from his past behavior. To my knowledge, he has not been violent for many years, and he has been committed to being a father first,” the letter stated. “I am writing because I do not view Mr. Combs as a danger to me or to the community.”

During the trial, Combs’ former assistant George Kaplan testified he once saw Combs throwing apples at Huynh at his home in Miami. Cassie Ventura, the case’s star witness and another former girlfriend of Combs, testified Combs was unfaithful to her by dating Gina throughout their 11-year relationship.

CNN has reached out to Huynh and to the US District Court for the Southern District of New York for comment.

Combs’ defense has asked the court to release him on bail on a $50 million bond. They have argued he is not a danger to the community and is not a flight risk.

Last week, they also filed a motion, asking the judge to completely acquit him or give him a new trial, arguing he was unfairly prosecuted based on the Mann Act, calling his conviction “unconstitutional.”

“This conviction stands alone, but it should not stand at all,” Combs’ attorney Alexandra Shapiro wrote in the 62-page memorandum.

Other witnesses in the case, including Ventura, previously wrote letters to the judge, pleading for him to remain incarcerated, telling the court they would fear for their safety if he were released from jail ahead of his sentencing.

Combs was physically violent on numerous occasions with Ventura, and photographic and video evidence of her being assaulted was shown to the jury throughout the trial, including 2016 hotel surveillance footage of Combs beating Ventura, which was first released by CNN.

In his decision to deny Combs bail immediately after the verdict, the judge cited Combs’ admitted pattern of violence in his relationships.

NPP Denies Smear Campaign Deal With Ukrainian Firm

0

Richard Ahiagbah

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has categorically denied allegations that it contracted a Ukrainian public relations firm to run an online smear campaign during the 2024 general election.

In a statement issued at the weekend by the party’s National Communications Directorate, the NPP dismissed as “completely false, baseless, and defamatory” claims published by AllAfrica.com on July 31, 2025, under the headline “Ukrainian PR Agency Demands $280,000 From Ghana’s NPP for Online Smear Campaign.”

According to the article, a firm identified as Brandcom, based in Ukraine, alleged that it had been hired by the NPP to create fake social media accounts and publish negative content targeting political opponents during the election period. Brandcom is reportedly demanding a payment of $280,000 from the NPP for services it claims to have rendered.

But the NPP says it has “no contractual relationship (past or present) with any entity known as Brandcom, based in Ukraine or elsewhere.”

“At no point did the leadership of the NPP engage, authorise, or instruct any foreign agency to operate fake social media accounts, produce smear campaign content, or undertake any unethical digital activities during the 2024 presidential campaign or any other cycle,” the party stated.

The NPP emphasised that it had consistently conducted its campaigns based on integrity, a strong policy agenda, and adherence to democratic principles. The statement reiterated the party’s commitment to issue-based politics and rejected any implication that it relied on disinformation or unethical tactics to gain political advantage.

Describing the publication as a “deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the party and sow public distrust,” the NPP called for an immediate retraction of the report and warned that it reserves the right to pursue legal action against both Brandcom and any media outlet that republishes the allegations without verifying the facts.

“This is a malicious and calculated effort to smear the NPP’s reputation. We encourage all media institutions and the public to be vigilant against misinformation, especially from faceless entities seeking to discredit legitimate political actors,” the statement added.

The party assured Ghanaians of its unwavering focus on building a prosperous nation through “bold, transparent, and ethical leadership.”

A fierce fire outbreak that swept through several makeshift wooden and metal structures at the Madina Washing Bay near Redco Flats has been contained by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

The affected structures, used for both commercial and residential purposes, were razed down along with utility poles, traders’ wares, and personal belongings, all estimated to be worth several thousand Ghana cedis.

In a statement issued by the Service, the GNFS noted that it received the distress call at 12:36 pm on Sunday and responded swiftly, with the first fire crew from the Madina Fire Station arriving at 12:40 pm to battle the fully developed fire.

Four additional fire engines from Legon, Abelempke, and the GNFS Headquarters were quickly mobilised to assist in containing the fire.

“The fire was confined at 13:42 hours and fully brought under control by 13:54 hours,” the Service said.

Overhaul operations continued until 8:50 pm, during which firefighters successfully salvaged multiple adjoining structures and their contents, averting further destruction.

The GNFS confirmed that one firefighter sustained a minor leg injury during the operation but no other casualties were reported.

An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Cut food prices to protect Ghanaians and the economy – Chamber of Agribusiness

Agric stakeholders are calling for a reduction in food prices across the country Agric stakeholders are calling for a reduction in food prices across the country

The Chamber of Agribusiness Ghana is calling on the government and relevant stakeholders within the agribusiness and agro-industrial value chain to collaboratively adjust food prices to restore food affordability and safeguard national food security.

In a statement issued on August 4, 2025, and sighted by GhanaWeb Business, the Chamber warned that soaring food prices are crippling consumer purchasing power, pushing nutritious diets out of reach, and eroding gains made toward national food security.

“Ghana’s food system faces unprecedented strain. Soaring food prices severely erode consumer purchasing power, pushing nutritious diets out of reach for millions and directly threatening our national goals of food security, improved nutrition, and balanced diets. While acknowledging the cost pressures on businesses, inaction is not an option. Collective responsibility is paramount,” the Chamber noted.

The Chamber also appealed to players across the agricultural value chain, from input suppliers to commodity aggregators, agro-food retailers, and food transporters, to reassess their pricing structures and reduce margins amid Ghana’s worsening food price inflation.

Additionally, the Chamber outlined five key reasons underpinning its call for nationwide price reductions:

. Prevent malnutrition and disease

. Preserve farmer viability

. Curb food inflation and economic risks

. Revive consumer demand

. Reduce waste and enhance efficiency

The Chamber further argued that unaffordable food prices are weakening demand across non-food sectors and stalling economic recovery.

It also stated that lower food costs would allow consumers to reallocate income, thereby stimulating broader economic activity.

BoG raises GH¢15.3 billion through its 56-day bills

0

Bank of Ghana's new headquarters Bank of Ghana’s new headquarters

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has raised GH¢15.38 billion through the issuance of 56-day central bank bills, as it intensifies efforts to mop up excess liquidity and strengthen the transmission of its monetary policy.

The short-term securities auctioned on July 30, 2025, were issued at a yield of 19.4%, according to official results published by the Central Bank.

The Bank, however, did not disclose the total bid volume received or its auction target, leaving a gap in gauging investor appetite and bid coverage.

BoG bills remain a primary tool under the Bank’s Open Market Operations (OMO), used to manage systemic liquidity, anchor inflation expectations and reinforce forward guidance on policy rates.

The 56-day tenor issued this week reflects the BoG’s continued preference for short-duration instruments to retain flexibility in monetary operations.

While the 19.4% yield on the bills is below the current policy rate of 25% analysts interpret the pricing as indicative of a cautious tightening stance.

The differential is seen as an effort by the BoG to maintain real positive returns for investors while signaling continued disinflationary commitment.

Angel Asiamah goes on his knees again, begs Sammy Gyamfi and President Mahama to pardon Agradaa

0

Angel Asiamah, the husband of embattled Evangelist Patricia Asiedua, also known as Agradaa, has once again publicly begged President John Dramani Mahama and the CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, to forgive the jailed religious figure.

Speaking during a sermon on Sunday, August 3, 2025, Asiamah stated that Agradaa had sent him directly from prison with a message of remorse and a desperate plea for compassion.

” I recall during my visit to our mother Agradaa in prison, I asked her that if she has a minute to say something, what would that be? And she said she render apologies to three people, that is the President, John Dramani Mahama, the Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi,” he said in a video.

The renewed plea comes amid growing public attention on Agradaa’s legal troubles, which stem from multiple fraud-related charges.

Once a controversial spiritualist turned evangelist, Agradaa has long been a polarising figure in Ghana’s religious and social landscape.Kneeling before congregants, Asiamah emphasised that Agradaa deeply regrets her past actions and is seeking reconciliation with those she may have wronged.

Neither President Mahama nor Sammy Gyamfi has responded publicly to the plea. As Agradaa remains behind bars, her request for forgiveness now rests in the hands of those she once publicly criticised, adding another twist to her already turbulent public life.

UDS Student Gets Life Imprisonment For Murder

0

The Victims

Salifu Nko-nya, a 20-year-old Computer Science student at the University for Development Studies (UDS), has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Tamale High Court presided over by Charles Acheampong after being found guilty of murdering a male colleague student over a female student.

The convict was the ex-boyfriend of the female student, who had ended their relationship and was in a new relationship with the deceased, Mohammed Zakiu Wunpini, 19-year-old Pharmacy student of UDS.

The incident, which occurred in September 2024, sent shockwaves through the university community when students found the deceased’s body in an uncompleted building close to the university.

When the incident happened last year, the family of the deceased believed their son was a victim of armed robbery. However, subsequent investigations identified Salifu Nko-nya as the perpetrator.

CCTV footage from a nearby house captured the incident, showing the victim being pursued into an uncompleted building, where he fell and was stabbed multiple times.

However, during investigation, the police found the deceased’s phone under a bed in the convict’s room. He claimed to have been keeping the deceased’s phone for him when he was questioned.

A Senior State Attorney, Linda Anibrika, presented evidence from telecommunications companies indicating that Salifu Nko-nya took the deceased’s phone, removed the SIM card, and inserted it into his own device to impersonate him shortly after the murder.

When the convict was asked how he got access to the deceased’s phone, he indicated that he saw the deceased being chased by some persons and that the phone fell off the deceased’s pocket and he took it.

The convict reportedly sent several messages to the deceased’s family and friends, including one to a friend that he was in trouble and that some people wanted him dead.

He also impersonated the deceased and sent a break up message to his ex-girlfriend explaining that he wanted her to also have a feel of a breakup experience.

The jury, after the entire proceeding, returned a 6:1 majority verdict, leading to the conviction and sentencing.

Family of NPP Chairman’s brother killed in robbery incident rejects police account

0

The family of Seidu Bukari, the younger brother of Bono East NPP Regional Chairman, Ibrahim Baba Bukari, has rejected the Ghana Police Service’s interim report on his death, describing the incident as an unjustified killing.

Seidu Bukari was shot dead in the early hours of Friday, August 1, 2025, at the residence of the NPP Chairman in James Town, Techiman.

Police confirmed the incident, stating that Seidu was a suspect in a robbery attempt and was shot while trying to scale a wall to escape arrest. They further alleged he was part of a known robbery gang operating in the area.

But in an interview with Adom News, the family’s spokesperson, Alhaji Issah Mahmoud Ali, dismissed the police narrative and demanded a more credible explanation.

“We reject the rumours and alleged police reports suggesting our brother was caught scaling a wall during a robbery attempt. The police must come up with a better story to explain why he was killed,” Alhaji Ali stated.

He insisted Seidu had no history of robbery or criminal activity.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Techiman, Adjei Mensah, who visited the family to offer his condolences, assured them that the incident would be thoroughly investigated.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has deployed a special team from the CID Headquarters, the Police Professional Standards Bureau, and the Police Intelligence Directorate to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.

Annoh-Dompreh demands action on model factory law, cites Ghana’s AfCFTA role

0

Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh says the Pan-African Parliament’s discussion of a Model Law on factory marks a powerful turning point in Africa’s economic narrative, if it goes beyond rhetoric.

The Nsawam Adogyiri MP urged his colleague lawmakers to let their countries take full advantage of existing frameworks like the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“Mr President, on the Model Law on factory, let me commend you highly,” Annoh-Dompreh began.

“I’m sure our torch-bearers today will be shaking in their graves. Kwame Nkrumah, Robert Mugabe, Julius Nyerere, all of them will be shaking in their graves that the very views and vision of the continent is beginning to find expression in our fundamental narratives as a continent.”

He hailed the very idea of the model law as historic.

“So for PAP to be talking about Model Law on factory, my day is made, and I feel proud as a son of the soil,” he said.

But he warned that leaving out the AfCFTA would be a major omission.

“Ghana is proud that we are hosts to the African Continental Free Trade Area. We cannot talk about the Model Law on factory without the input or bringing in work on the relevance and the importance of the continental free trade area.

“At least, it’s one of the biggest Free Trade Agreements, after the WTO, and we as a continent moving forward should find a way we can appropriate this into our forward march.”

He urged the Parliament not to repeat historical missteps by ignoring foundational principles.

“Market sources are all important. We’ve also read about the Marshall Plan, what the World Bank and the IMF had done to Europe when Europe was zeroed down. We don’t need to reinvent the wheel.”

“The question is: this concept of Model Law on factory, what are we fashioning it on? Are there best practices? Of course, I concede that we may have a unique challenge.

“But are there best practices globally that we can fashion on — concept of market sourcing, concept of branding, banks, and SMEs? These are fundamental rules of origin, and these are fundamentals that we need to agree on.”

He also stressed the importance of making the law practical, not symbolic.

“Now this model law, Mr. Speaker, as you do know, is rather going to be a persuasive law passed. However, when it is persuasive, then we must also up our activity in terms of convincing member states to buy into the concept and also adopt it. So that it doesn’t become one of the laws that we pass, and it’ll get dusty on shelves.”

Stop recording tribute songs for Daddy Lumba

Bright Kankam Boadu (L) warns against Daddy Lumba (R) tribute songs Bright Kankam Boadu (L) warns against Daddy Lumba (R) tribute songs

FIVE NIGERIAN women, who are suspected to be sex workers, have been arrested during a police swoop, intended to reduce crime within the Asokwa Municipality.

The Asokwa District Police had conducted the unannounced security operation in some known ghettos to apprehend suspected hoodlums even before they could plan to strike.

In total, twelve people, including seven males and five females were arrested at different locations. The five women later confessed that they were engaging in prostitution to survive.

FDA suspends manufacturing of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix

0

Accra, Aug 4, GNA – The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has suspended the manufacture of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix, ordering a market recall of specific batches of the product.

A release copied to Ghana News Agency said the suspension followed consumer complaints and FDA’s investigation of Nutrifoods Ghana Limited’s manufacturing plant, which “established infractions on standards and quality.”

“Maintenance of critical manufacturing equipment was poor, and monitoring systems were inadequate to protect public health and safety,” it said.

“The lapses at the manufacturing plant affected the integrity of the canned products by compromising the sealing mechanisms, leading to contamination and bloating of the products in pouches.”

“Mold was found on some of them, raising serious health and safety concerns, hence the suspension and product recall.”

The FDA noted that internal investigations had commenced to ascertain if there were regulatory lapses.

Nutrifoods had earlier in January 2025 been barred from manufacturing the product.

Any dereliction of duty identified would be swiftly dealt with in order to strengthen the FDA’s regulatory oversight, the release said.

“The Authority advises consumers, retailers and wholesalers to take note of this directive and act accordingly. We will continue to exercise rigorous oversight in accordance with our mandate to protect public health and safety,” it added.

Nutrifoods Ghana Limited said it would investigate the root cause of the problem, as it had recalled all batches of the Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix in 210g and 400g Cans, and Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix in 380g and 1.05kg, with specified batch numbers.

Jay Jagadip Anjaria, the Business Head, Nutrifoods Ghana Limited, said the identified products with respective batch numbers should not be consumed but returned to its Tema Office or with any of its distributors nationwide.

“Alternatively, you can contact us on 050 5384429 (Monday to Friday 8:00am-8:00pm). Please be assured that we are working closely with the FDA to ensure that this recall process goes as smoothly as possible,” he said in a statement.

The company expressed regret of any inconvenience caused to consumers and trade partners because of the issue and recall.

“We at Nutrifoods Ghana Ltd are committed to delivering high quality products meeting all the required stringent national food safety standards and ensure our consumers are delighted with our products,” he said.

“We want to reassure our consumers and trade partners that we are doing our best to recover all affected products and replace them without difficulty.”

CAF sacks Director of Refereeing amid Morocco’s petition

Désiré Noumandiez Doue has been dismissed as CAF Director of Refereeing Désiré Noumandiez Doue has been dismissed as CAF Director of Refereeing

The Director of Refereeing at the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Désiré Noumandiez Doué, has been dismissed following the controversy over officiating in the 2022 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final.

Although Noumandiez Doué was not the center referee for the final, he appointed the referee for the final match based on their performance assessments.

About the petition

CAF is expected to take drastic action against Namibian referee Antsino Twanyanyukwa, who officiated the 2022 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final.

According to a report by Morocco World News, the referee’s decision to initially grant Morocco a penalty when the score was tied at 2-2 was deemed incorrect, prompting the demand for action.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) claimed Twanyanyukwa’s decisions were considered “referee injustice,” calling on CAF to review the incident and possibly suspend the official.

CAF has yet to respond to the petition after a thorough review of the request.

During Morocco’s final game against Nigeria, the referee awarded a penalty in favour of the host nation after suspecting a handball by Oluwatosin Demehin in the box.

However, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviewed the incident and advised Twanyanyukwa to take a second look.

The Namibian referee subsequently overturned the penalty decision after realising Demehin’s arm was close to her body.

In a shocking turn of events, the Super Falcons scored the third goal through Jennifer Echegini, giving them a 3-2 win and sealing their title.

Cocoa is a key export commodity for Ghana Cocoa is a key export commodity for Ghana

The government is expected to announce a new producer price for cocoa for the 2025/2026 crop season on August 4, 2025.

The announcement will follow the completion of work by all committees tasked with reviewing the pricing structure and after the necessary stakeholder consultations.

However, uncertainty remains regarding the real value of the new price in cedi terms, given the recent sharp appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar over the past few months.

The current producer price is pegged at GH¢3,100 per 64kg bag and GH¢49,600 per tonne.

The government is moving ahead with the new pricing decision ahead of the official opening of the 2025/2026 cocoa season, scheduled for Thursday, August 7, 2025.

Last month, President John Mahama reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that cocoa farmers receive at least 70% of the world market price.
