Hemsworth on facing fears, ageing and return of Thor

0

Chris Hemsworth is best known as the hammer-wielding Norse god Thor in Marvel’s cinematic universe.

But now the Australian actor is trading superpowers for science, introspection and a new set of personal challenges, many of which are far scarier than battling fictional villains.

The 41-year-old is back for a second season of Limitless, which sees him confront some of his deepest fears as he explores how to live longer, healthier and better.

“The first season almost killed me,” Hemsworth tells the BBC. “And I thought, ‘never again.'”

In season one, Hemsworth tackled physical and mental challenges designed to delay ageing, including free diving, fasting, stress training and walking along a crane 900 feet above the ground.

The actor says he chose to “torture” himself again as he had a burning curiosity to “ask bigger and deeper questions” about ageing and the meaning of life.

“It was exhausting but also profoundly rewarding,” he says. “But now I do have more questions rather than answers!”

Season two takes a different path as Hemsworth continues to test himself, but not just physically. With the help of Ed Sheeran, he learns to play a musical instrument for the first time and inspired by his children’s carefree risk-taking, he climbs a 600-foot Alpine dam.

“Being thrust into unfamiliar environments where you’re facing adversity or risk helps you understand how fragile life is and how quickly it can change,” he says.

Hemsworth, whose brothers, Liam and Luke, are also famous actors, says he now takes nothing for granted and has learnt not to “settle for the easy route as the greatest lessons come from the more challenging times”.

One of the biggest challenges for the actor was in the first season of the National Geographic series when a genetic test revealed he carries two copies of the gene ApoE4, one from his mother and one from his father, making him between eight and 10 times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s than those without both copies of the gene.

“That warning sign was further motivation to take care of myself,” Hemsworth explains.

“It also felt like a great opportunity to offer up education and a better understanding for people navigating it, as Alzheimer’s is something a lot of people face.”

While Hemsworth has become increasingly interested in how to live better, he says there’s a fine line between healthy ageing and extreme biohacking.

Biohackers want to make their bodies and brains function better by “hacking” their biology.

“You want to live a longer and better life, but at what cost? You could have your exact routine, but there’s no point doing all of that if you’re isolated and lonely at home,” says Hemsworth.

“I’m going to put energy into health and wellness, but I also want to enjoy life.”

This mindset puts him at odds with more extreme elements of the biohacking movement, which has gained attention through figures like tech entrepreneur Bryan Johnson.

Bryan Johnson’s Project Blueprint is a controversial plan to reverse ageing and live forever

Johnson, 47, has spent millions of dollars in a bid to slow down ageing – his regime, Project Blueprint, has seen him take numerous supplements a day, follow a strict diet and sleep routine and undergo a plasma exchange.

It’s an approach that Hemsworth finds intriguing but admits he has “no interest in exploring”.

“I like dancing in and out of those spaces,” Hemsworth explains. “Sometimes I try one thing, then another, and different pieces of science resonate at different times in your life.

“If you’re too boxed in with one way of thinking, you close the doors to other opportunities.”

As well as reversing his biological age, Johnson also wants to crack the code on how to live forever.

But the Marvel star says no one has figured out how to cheat death yet, and he doesn’t think anyone will, so “we have to embrace death”.

“Suffering comes from denial of our inevitability of death – we all have an expiration date.”

He adds: “If you were told you had 200 years guaranteed, you’d become more complacent and reckless. The idea that life can be taken away at any second is a beautiful reminder to appreciate every moment.”

He also explains that if humans could live forever, then relationships with other people wouldn’t be as important, and for Hemsworth, family appears to really matter.

The Thor actor lives in Byron Bay with his wife, actress Elsa Pataky, and their three children. Limitless touches on how his choices affect not just his own life, but those around him.

Part of what spurred him on to film a second series was “the great feedback from young kids, parents and grandparents” and realising that he was able to inspire others to challenge themselves.

Hemsworth has played the role of Thor in the MCU since 2011

Despite his status as a global action star, Hemsworth is very introspective and seems to be deeply driven to find constant meaning and purpose in his life.

“This experience reminds me of what I’m offering up and receiving,” he says, adding that it’s important for him to always remember that “we don’t survive and thrive on our own”.

Alongside his lifelong quest to live better, Hemsworth is also thinking about what is next in his acting career.

Thor will return in Avengers: Doomsday which is set to be released in the winter of 2026.

As to whether there will be another standalone film, the actors says: “I don’t know, we’ll have to see where this one goes as I’m unpacking all of that now.”

“It’s something I certainly love and so we’ll see what happens.

Businessman charged with GH¢490,600 theft appears in court

0

A Nigerian businessman has appeared before the Dansoman Circuit Court for allegedly embezzling GH¢490,600 belonging to his employer.

Desmond Theke, charged with stealing, pleaded not guilty.

He is accused of misappropriating funds belonging to Solomon Okechukwu, a dealer in bales of secondhand clothing.

The court granted Theke bail in the sum of GH¢500,000 with two sureties, one of whom must justify with title deeds equivalent to the bail amount.

Theke was also ordered to deposit his Ghana Card at the court registry and report to the Police every two weeks until further notice.

Chief Inspector Emelia Mensah, the prosecutor, was directed to file all disclosures and witness statements ahead of the Case Management Conference scheduled for August 25, 2025.

The court noted that the matter, being a felony, could not be referred to Alternative Dispute Resolution, though the parties may attempt an out-of-court settlement.

According to the prosecution, Okechukwu, a Nigerian businessman operating in Accra, Togo, and other African countries, employed Theke in 2024 as a salesperson to manage his Accra operations.

In the same year, Okechukwu imported two 40-foot containers of secondhand clothes and entrusted them to Theke for sale.

He also sent additional funds to Theke to purchase goods for the shop.

On June 11, 2025, the complainant visited Ghana for stocktaking, but Theke allegedly failed to account for the goods and funds.

The matter was reported to the Dansoman Police, and Theke was arrested the same day.

During investigations, both parties were advised to engage a professional auditor or third party to reconcile accounts and stock.

On June 16, 2025, they submitted a document indicating GH¢490,600 as the amount embezzled.

The document was signed by both parties and witnesses and has since been filed on the case docket.

I was not maltreated during OSP detention

0

Former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Paul Adom-Otchere, has stated that he was not subjected to any form of maltreatment during his recent detention by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Mr. Adom-Otchere was invited and briefly detained over a revenue assurance contract allegedly awarded by GACL without following due process. He was released on Friday, August 1, after the OSP approved revised bail conditions. His initial detention followed an inability to meet the original bail terms, reportedly due to a lack of landed property in Ghana.

Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV with Bernard Avle on Monday, August 4, Adom-Otchere said although the holding facility had basic conditions, he did not experience any abuse.

“It’s a normal place they detain every Ghanaian. You are detained with people who are also detained. Nobody maltreated anyone. That is for sure. It’s a state-owned,” he said.

Describing the environment, he added:

“Yes, yes, you will be in a room with other people. It depends on the numbers they have, usually about 25 people, not in the same room. I was in a room with other people.”

According to him, detainees were given basic necessities to ensure comfort during their stay.

“They give you a mattress, yes, for now, it’s a double mattress, I think, because of the floor, and they give you a blanket; they treat you well. They provide clothes. I wasn’t due for a change of clothes yet because it was overnight. And by mid-day, they said we should get ready,” he explained.

However, he acknowledged that access to the outside world was restricted while in detention.

“You can’t contact anyone,” he said.

The investigation into the GACL contract by the Office of the Special Prosecutor is still ongoing.

Robbery: Two men jailed for 30 years

0

Two men who planned to rob commuters on the Asankra Saah-Asankragwa Road in the Wassa Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region have been handed 15 years’ imprisonment each with hard labour by the Tarkwa Circuit Court.

They are Mohammed Abdul Salam, 28, and Karim Yakubu, 42, both of whom are unemployed.

They pleaded guilty to conspiracy, preparation to commit a crime and possession of arms and ammunition without authority.

Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Samuel Ahiabor, stated that the complainant is from the Asankragwa Divisional Police Command, while the convicts are natives of Savelugu and Tamale, respectively.

He said Salam and Yakubu said they travelled from their hometowns to Asankra Saah near Asankragwa to prospect for gold, but they decided to engage in armed robbery instead.

On April 14, 2025, the two men, armed with one locally manufactured single-barrel shotgun with AAA live cartridges, hid themselves under a tree in the nearby bush close to the Asankra Saah-Asankragwa road to rob passengers using that route.

ASP Ahiabor said on April 15, 2025, around 0310 hours, the Asankragwa night patrol police team, who were on their normal patrol duty, spotted the convicts sitting on a tree stump in a bush.

He said the four officers on board decided to alight from the vehicle, but in the process, Salam and Yakubu noticed they were armed police officers and attempted to escape.

Prosecution said the two men got trapped in an abandoned mining pit filled with mud, and the police officers who were chasing them rescued and arrested both.

He said when the police searched them, they found one locally manufactured single-barrel shotgun loaded with one live AAA cartridge on Salam, while two live cartridges and one Nokia keypad mobile phone were in Yakubu’s pocket.

ASP Ahiabor informed the court that further investigation conducted by the police revealed that Salam provided the locally manufactured shotgun with three live AAA cartridges for the operation.

Floods cut off roads, destroy 15,000 hectares of farmland

0

The Sissala East Municipality in the Upper West Region is grappling with a major agricultural crisis following the destruction of a key access road by torrential rains.

The flood-induced damage has rendered over 15,000 hectares of farmland inaccessible, threatening livelihoods, food security, and ongoing farming activities in the area.

This alarming development was confirmed by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Adamu Yakubu, during a visit to the affected site at Piribuga, located between Tumu and Kasana, on Monday,  August 4. The road, which connects several farming communities, was completely washed away after heavy overnight rainfall, cutting off access to vast stretches of farmland and disrupting the transportation of fertilisers and other essential farm inputs.

“As you can see, trucks carrying fertilisers have reached this point and cannot proceed,” the MCE lamented. “If you want to estimate the number of farms within this area, there are over 15,000 hectares of farmland affected. This is a big challenge to the municipality.”

The MCE described the situation as a critical setback at a crucial stage of the farming season, noting that the inability to access farms has stalled fertiliser application and other farm operations.

“We have invested thousands of Ghana cedis into our farms,” he stated. “We cannot allow that to go to waste.”

In the short term, the municipal assembly is deploying drip equipment and tipper trucks to manage the situation, but Mr. Yakubu stressed that these are only temporary interventions.

Piribuga is not only an important farming zone but also part of a broader Trans-ECOWAS trade corridor, which links Ghana to Burkina Faso and Togo. The current disruption has far-reaching implications for both local agricultural production and regional trade.

Mr. Yakubu assured residents and stakeholders that he is working tirelessly to mobilise support.

“As Municipal Chief Executive, I am committed to doing everything possible to ensure this road is fixed immediately,” he said.

He also urged community members to exercise caution. With no road signs or barriers, there is a high risk of accidents at the site of the washout. The assembly, in collaboration with local youth groups, chiefs, and assembly members, is undertaking public education to ensure safe passage until proper repairs are carried out.

Speaking on behalf of the Upper West Regional Minister, on Monday, August 4, Pognaa Fati Koree, the Regional Coordinating Director, acknowledged the devastating impact of the recent flood, which washed away a critical bridge linking nine farming communities in the Sissala East Municipality.

“Given the extent of the damage and the importance of this bridge as a lifeline for several communities, the regional administration is coordinating efforts to mobilise all available drip equipment to provide temporary access, especially to enable farmers to apply fertiliser during this crucial period,” the director said.

The Assembly Member for the area, Ibrahim Moro, also voiced grave concern over the situation, emphasising the dire implications for farmers during a critical point in the agricultural calendar.

“We are just at the beginning of August—this is the peak period for fertiliser application,” he explained. “Every morning, you’ll find scores of farmers gathered at this broken stretch of road, trying to find ways to transport fertiliser to their farms.”

According to him, the destruction of the road has forced farmers to adopt complicated and costly alternatives. Fertiliser brought from Tumu now has to be offloaded and reloaded onto other motorbikes from the affected communities, just to reach nearby farms.

Danish zoo asks for unwanted pets to feed its predators

0

The Eurasian lynx is among the predators that are expected to benefit from the scheme, the zoo says

A zoo in Denmark has appealed to the public to donate their healthy, unwanted pets as part of a unique effort to provide food for its predators.

Aalborg Zoo has asked for donations of live chickens, rabbits, and guinea pigs, which it says are “gently euthanised” by trained staff.

The zoo also accepts donations of live horses, with owners able to benefit from a potential tax break.

Posting on Instagram, the zoo explains it has a “responsibility to imitate the natural food chain of the animals”, and smaller livestock make up an important part of the diet of our predators.

The zoo says the food provided in this way is “reminiscent of what it would naturally hunt in the wild” – and that this is especially true for the Eurasian lynx.

Other predators being kept at the zoo include lions and tigers.

The small animals can be donated on weekdays, with no more than four at a time, without an appointment.

On its website, underneath a picture of a tiger devouring a piece of meat, Aalborg Zoo lays out the conditions for donating horses.

To be eligible, they need to have a horse passport and cannot have been treated for an illness within the previous 30 days.

If they are successful in handing over their animals, horse donors can then receive a tax deduction.

In a statement, the zoo’s deputy director, Pia Nielsen, said the zoo’s carnivores had been fed smaller livestock “for many years”.

“When keeping carnivores, it is necessary to provide them with meat, preferably with fur, bones etc to give them as natural a diet as possible,” she explained.

“Therefore, it makes sense to allow animals that need to be euthanised for various reasons to be of use in this way. In Denmark, this practice is common, and many of our guests and partners appreciate the opportunity to contribute. The livestock we receive as donations are chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs, and horses.”

My supporters were protesting bail terms, not defending wrongdoing – Adom-Otchere

0

Former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Paul Adom-Otchere, has rejected claims that public support shown during his recent detention by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) was an attempt to shield him from accountability or place him above the law.

In a viral video released on August 2, 2025, Adom-Otchere thanked individuals who expressed concern for him while in custody. However, the video has sparked criticism from sections of the public, with some accusing those individuals of seeking to interfere with the work of the anti-corruption agency.

Clarifying the intent behind the show of solidarity, Adom-Otchere said on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Monday, August 4, that the support he received was not an endorsement of his innocence, but rather a protest against what many viewed as harsh and unfamiliar bail conditions imposed by the OSP.

“All those people who I said thank you to, who’d expressed concern; I have seen some spin on social media. They were not expressing the concern that Paul Adom-Otchere has done something wrong and he is above the law and you cannot touch.

“No! They were expressing concern that the bail conditions that the OSP gave were too harsh and unreasonable and actually unknown to the jurisprudence,” he explained.

Adom-Otchere was detained over an alleged procedural breach involving a revenue assurance contract awarded during his tenure as GACL Board Chair. He was initially held for failing to meet bail conditions that included providing landed property in his name.

Following legal negotiations and growing public concern, the OSP revised the terms, allowing the Jospong Group of Companies to stand as surety, leading to his release.

The OSP’s investigation into the matter remains ongoing.

Ex-convict teacher jailed 48 years for defiling 7-year-old girl

0

The suspect spent 15 years in jail for a similar offence The suspect spent 15 years in jail for a similar offence

A 47-year-old teacher and ex-convict has been sentenced to a 48-year jail term by an Accra Circuit Court for defiling a seven-year-old girl.

According to a report by graphic.com.gh, the court, presided over by G. A. Inkumsah-Ishun, found Sokah Phidels Load, who has a prior conviction for a similar offense, guilty of defiling the victim after a trial.

The prosecutor, Police Chief Inspector Edna Aningah, noted that the convict was sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment for defilement in 2011 but served only 15 years and was released in 2020 after the sentence was reduced following an appeal.

Sokah is said to have gained employment at a basic school without the school’s knowledge of his criminal background.

According to the prosecution, the complainant is the father of the victim, who lives with his daughter in Accra, while the convict lived on the premises of the school and had been employed there for just three weeks.

“On February 6, 2025, at around 7:15 a.m., the victim’s father dropped her off at school. Sokah, who was then in his office located in the Administrator’s Block, observed the girl entering the common hall to place her drink in the school’s fridge. He called her to his office under false pretenses,” the prosecutor explained.

The prosecution told the court that when the victim entered Sokah’s office, he asked her to show him her underwear, which she did. The convict then took the victim to a teachers’ washroom, instructed the minor to sit on the water closet, and angrily told her to remove her underwear and cover her face.

The victim complied but peeked at the teacher through her uniform and saw Sokah open his trousers, kneel, and insert his finger and penis into her private parts, causing her to scream.

Sokah covered her mouth and warned her not to tell anyone, threatening to cane her if she did.

The victim later confided in another pupil, the sister of her classmate, who reported the incident to the school authorities.

Upon realizing the matter had been reported, Sokah fled and went into hiding.

“A complaint was lodged with the police, and the victim was issued a medical form and taken for examination at a hospital,” the prosecutor stated.

Chief Inspector Aningah told the court that efforts to reach Sokah were initially unsuccessful until he sent a voice note to the school, acknowledging that he had heard the police were searching for him, but he still refused to surrender.

The prosecutor added that the police eventually traced his hideout to Santeo, a community in Accra.

She stated that surveillance, aided by his identification card, was mounted in the neighborhood, leading to his arrest on March 13, 2025.

“After a thorough investigation, Sokah was charged with the offense and brought before the court,” the prosecutor concluded.

Ga Mantse honoured in Columbus as he strengthens Ghana–Ohio ties at Ohio Ghana Festival

0

Ga Mantse and President of the Ga Traditional Council, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, received a rousing welcome as he led Ghana’s delegation to the Ohio Ghana Festival in Columbus at the weekend, reaffirming the strong cultural and civic bond between Accra and its Sister City, Columbus.

The appearance of the King and his entourage was the highlight of the festival’s opening, which drew hundreds of Ghanaian-Americans and members of the wider Columbus community to celebrate Ghanaian heritage through music, food, and tradition.

Dressed in stately traditional attire and accompanied by leading chiefs from the Ga State and northern Ghana, the Ga Mantse received a formal welcome from the City of Columbus, represented by top officials including Congresswoman Joyce Beatty and Mayor Andrew J. Ginther.

“This festival is about building bridges between communities, across continents,” Mayor Ginther remarked. “Accra and Columbus are joined not just by a Sister City agreement, but by shared values and a spirit of cultural exchange.”

King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, in his address, acknowledged the Ghanaian diaspora’s contributions to American life and encouraged continued collaboration in education, business, and cultural exchange.

“Our traditions must not only be preserved,” the King said. “They must be shared. That is how we deepen understanding, strengthen identity, and build lasting bonds between people.”

The Ohio Ghana Festival, now a fixture on Columbus’ cultural calendar, featured a lineup of drumming, dance, and culinary displays that showcased Ghana’s rich diversity. For many attendees; particularly young members of the diaspora; the opportunity to interact directly with traditional rulers was a moment of pride and connection.

Joining the Ga Mantse were Chianabu-Pio, Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III, the Paramount Chief of the Chiana Traditional Area, who is also President of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs and a member of the Council of State; Naba Abisa Anthony Atasige lll, Vice President of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs; Nii Adote Otintor II, Paramount Chief of Sempe, and Nii Dodoo Nsaki II, Paramount Chief of Otublohum. Together, they offered a visible expression of Ghanaian unity and heritage in the diaspora setting.

Organisers from both Ghana and Ohio say the event marks a new chapter in the Sister City partnership. Plans are underway to explore joint programmes in arts, youth mentorship, and cultural education.

As the festival drew to a close, it left an impression that went beyond entertainment. It was a statement that tradition, when shared with openness and dignity, becomes a bridge to new opportunities and deeper understanding.

Ghana dispatch: Attorney General announces legal education reforms – JURIST

0

In a public address on Monday, 29 July, Ghana’s Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Mr. Dominic Ayine, announced plans to expand access to legal education through sweeping reforms aimed at helping thousands of LLB holders who are unable to enter the Ghana School of Law (GSL) and qualify as lawyers.

Ghana’s current legal education system requires all Bachelor of Laws (LLB) holders across law faculties to take an independent entrance examination conducted by the General Legal Council for admissions into the Ghana School of law. Following the entrance exam, all students must undergo a two-year training period during law school, then must pass a bar examination before they can practice law.

The reform aims to improve the training of lawyers while reducing the number of years required to earn a law degree. Under the proposed model, aspiring lawyers would complete three years of legal education at a faculty of law, followed by a one-year bar practice course—or clinical legal program—offered by the same university where they earned their degree. Finally, all graduates would be required to sit for and pass a national bar examination before being admitted to the Ghana Bar Association.

The proposed bill is expected to go before Cabinet next month and would eliminate the existing GSL system.

In an exclusive interview with JURIST, Salamatu Haruna, a Barrister‑at‑Law (BL) candidate at the Ghana School of Law, and Bismark Gyabaah, a recent LLB graduate and aspirant to the Ghana School of Law, shared their views on the proposed reform. Salamat Haruna said of the draft bill:

I’ve always thought of this kind of system as a better legal education system for two reasons. For one, it takes away the monopoly of the Ghana School of Law and makes the law faculties responsible for the entire training of lawyers. The competition between these faculties will have an effect on the quality of legal education provided, and even the cost at which this is provided because all these schools want to be able to attract students. Secondly, this system has the potential of solidifying legal practice in areas that hitherto had very few practitioners. The faculties of law are available in various regions across the country unlike the law school which is only in Greater Accra and Ashanti. If a student spends 6 years in one region, they get exposed to the Courts of that region and practice in that region, there is a possibility of them being comfortable about starting and maintaining their practice in that region, thereby contributing to expanding legal practice to these areas.

According to Bismark Gyabaah, collaboration between the government and the General Legal Council (GLC) to expand facilities would both preserve and strengthen the current legal education system, essentially returning to the earlier model where LLB graduates gained automatic admission to the GSL without an entrance examination. Bismark also expressed concern that reducing the duration of legal training from six years to four years could limit the breadth of subjects that students would like to study.

Salamat shared a similar view, noting that while the scope of legal education could be maintained, it would require proper planning. She pointed out that the two-year program at the Ghana School of Law is effectively just 14 months, as each part runs from November to June. She concluded by advocating for at least five years of training, with the extra time allocated to internships and fieldwork, stating, “In four years at law faculty, I don’t think I have experienced law the way that I have now in barely 8 months at law school because of the internships we do here.”

Article 25(1)(c) of the 1992 constitution of Ghana stipulates that, “All persons shall have the right to equal educational opportunities and facilities and with a view to achieving the full realisation of that right…higher education shall be made equally accessible to all, on the basis of capacity, by every appropriate means.”

By aiming to break the monopoly of the Ghana School of Law, the proposed reform seeks to uphold the educational rights of aspiring lawyers in the country. This initiative also aims to prevent unfortunate incidents like the one in 2021, when, but for the intervention of the President, 449 LLB graduates were denied admission to the GSL.

I believe that most law students, including myself, wonder how the proposed reform will benefit us and strengthen our training—especially as we hope it will enhance legal practice and justice delivery in the country.

Health Ministry races to secure Mpox vaccines amid rising cases

0

The Ministry of Health has intensified efforts to secure vaccines to contain the rising spread of Mpox in Ghana, following a recent spike in confirmed cases and the country’s first recorded death from the disease.

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh announced the move on Monday, August 4, during a brief ceremony to receive a consignment of medical supplies from representatives of the World Health Organisation (WHO). The supplies are expected to bolster the country’s Mpox response efforts.
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) on Sunday, August 3, confirmed 20 new Mpox cases, raising the national tally to 302 as of July 30, 2025. This follows the death of one patient, announced on July 22, Ghana’s first fatality linked to the virus.

In his remarks, Akandoh expressed appreciation to development partners for their support and made a direct appeal for expedited action on the Ministry’s vaccine request.
“We want to appeal to you to expedite action on our request so that we get the vaccines, and then we will use the vaccines as part of our response. It hasn’t been easy. Let me commend our health workers, the National Rapid Response Team, the regional rapid response team, and the district rapid response team.

“They have fought hard. We will try our best to contain the disease. Let us be careful and take the precautions very seriously,” he said.

“I have no landed property, and that is verifiable” – Adom-Otchere to critics

0

Veteran broadcaster and former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Paul Adom-Otchere, has firmly defended his claim that he owns no landed property in Ghana, insisting the statement is factual and can easily be verified.

Despite widespread public scepticism and heated discussions on social media, Adom-Otchere maintained that his lack of property ownership is a matter of personal choice.

“I have no landed property in my name and that is easily verifiable,” he told Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Monday, August 4, 2025.

He further addressed concerns about the conditions of his brief detention by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), which initially required that he present landed property as part of his bail conditions — a requirement he could not meet.

“The day after when lawyers went to the OSP and said look, you can’t have these bail terms especially when the suspect had told you that he does not have landed property. I am understanding that that will annoy them, and that is why I’m worried about how that annoys anyone,” he explained.

His comments follow allegations by private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu, who challenged the accuracy of his statement, claiming Adom-Otchere owns multiple properties in Accra, even if not registered in his name.

“Paul telling OSP that he has no property is false… He was attempting to mislead the OSP,” Kpebu said in an interview on Joy FM, adding that some individuals had offered to reveal properties allegedly linked to the journalist.

But Adom-Otchere stood by his declaration, using the platform to explain his lifestyle and financial decisions, and pushed back against social media suggestions that it was implausible for a media professional of his standing to be without property.

“Today I have seen people on Facebook say you have done journalism for 30 years you say you don’t have property; but I organize my life the way I organize my life. I want to use my money for something else and another person, who is with me uses his/her money to do something else so that we can all benefit – I don’t have landed property in my name,” he stressed.

He also questioned the nature of the initial bail terms imposed by the OSP, describing them as highly unusual.

“All the lawyers are saying that this bail regime is very novel; it never happened, no one has seen it before. Bail regime is usually self-recognizance bail… especially if you’re somebody they can always find,” he noted.

Adom-Otchere was later released after the OSP approved revised bail conditions. The Jospong Group of Companies stepped in to act as surety.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Special Prosecutor has said that its investigation into the revenue assurance contract awarded during Adom-Otchere’s tenure as GACL Board Chair remains ongoing.

‘Ultimate charlatan!’ – KSM ‘tears’ into Ntim Fordjour over alleged ‘Akwatia bloodshed’ comment

Kwaku Sintim-Misa (L) called out Rev John Ntim Fordjour (R) on his show recently play videoKwaku Sintim-Misa (L) called out Rev John Ntim Fordjour (R) on his show recently

Host of the KSM Show, Kwaku Sintim-Misa (KSM), has slammed the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, for reportedly making unguarded remarks that could incite people to act violently at the upcoming by-election at Akwatia.

Speaking on the July 29, 2025, edition of his show, KSM did not mince words in condemning the legislator; describing him as a ‘charlatan’.

According to him, he found the comments by the MP very irresponsible, given that he is a man of God entrusted with pastoral duties.

He indicated that a man of God of his caliber should be promoting peace with his statements, not inciting violence.

“… I want to start with the ultimate charlatan. I think his name is Reverend Fordjour. Reverend Fordjour, shame on you. I’m looking at you eyeball to eyeball. Let me say that you don’t deserve the title reverend. Shame on you! Why am I saying all of this? How can a reverend, supposedly someone who has been ordained as a man of God, ordained to preach the love of Christ, tell us such things? You say, ‘I am a pastor, I’m born again, I preach the love of Christ.’ How in the world can somebody who is an ordained reverend, Rev Fordjour, open your mouth and say something like ‘If Mahama doesn’t address the issue at Ablekuma North, there is going to be bloodshed in Akwatia?’” he fumed.

KSM, condemning the lawmaker’s comments, went on to express his frustration over the excessive partisanship that has dominated politics in the country.

He shared that such practices are stifling the country’s development and growth, while other nations continue to advance.

“… I’m sure you’ll be at Akwatia with your wife and your children. You’re going to rally all of them and take them to Akwatia and let them join whatever gangs that you plan to send to Akwatia. Tell your wife and children we are going to have bloodshed today. It’s very sad and painful when intelligent people, plenty of whom are NPP, are trying to (sic) spell doom ahead of the by-election.

“When do we move past this partisan nonsense, when do we build our nation. Other people are focused, and developing their countries. So, let’s build a nation, move beyond this partisan crap. When people are thinking about progressive things, then a reverend opens his damned mouth and talks about bloodshed in Akwatia if the president doesn’t do something,” he added.

KSM further expressed his disgust, questioning if the lawmaker meant those remarks, demanding him to renounce his title as a reverend, if indeed he was serious about the things he said.

He went on to add that he will call out other pastors who appear to hide behind their titles while making unguarded statements that seem to promote violence and unrest.

“Are you serious? If you’re serious, then I want you to have a press conference and renounce that reverend title. Renounce it, throw it away. All you pastors out there who are calling yourselves reverends and whatever titles and standing at the forefront of Ghanaians telling us nonsense; trust me, I’ll come after you,” he added.

Beautiful and Gorgeous Lace Styles for Women

0

Lace has always been synonymous with elegance, femininity, and timeless beauty. Whether it’s used for an intimate gathering, a formal event, or a stylish outing, lace styles have an undeniable charm that elevates any outfit. The delicate and intricate patterns of lace make it a perfect fabric for creating beautiful and gorgeous looks that can range from casual chic to glamorous evening wear. Here are some stunning lace styles that every woman should consider adding to her wardrobe.

Lace dresses have a unique way of combining sophistication with a touch of romance. These dresses often feature lace details in the bodice, sleeves, or skirt, creating an airy and ethereal look. A full lace dress, especially in pastel colors or white, is ideal for weddings, garden parties, or formal occasions. For a modern twist, a lace dress with sheer panels or a high-low hemline can make you stand out at a cocktail party or evening event.

For a more casual yet chic style, lace blouses and tops are a perfect choice. A lace top can be paired with jeans, skirts, or trousers to create an effortlessly stylish look. Opt for a lace top with a slight peplum design for added flair or go for a sheer lace top to add a bold statement under a blazer or jacket. The intricate patterns of lace make these tops versatile enough for both day and evening wear.

Lace skirts offer an elegant alternative to traditional fabrics and are perfect for women who want to make a statement without being too over-the-top. A lace pencil skirt paired with a tucked-in blouse or a fitted top exudes a polished and chic look, suitable for work or formal dinners. For a more relaxed, bohemian vibe, a flowy lace skirt with a simple tank top or blouse is ideal for casual outings or summer festivals.

For the bold and fashion-forward woman, a lace jumpsuit is a perfect way to wear lace in a modern and striking way. Lace jumpsuits combine the edginess of a jumpsuit with the delicate femininity of lace, creating a head-turning ensemble. Whether you go for a full lace design or lace accents on the sleeves or neckline, this style is ideal for formal events, parties, or even a chic evening out.

For evening occasions such as weddings, galas, or red-carpet events, lace gowns are the epitome of grace and luxury. A full lace gown with intricate floral or geometric lace patterns creates an air of royalty and elegance. Whether it’s a mermaid-style gown that hugs your curves or a flowing A-line silhouette, a lace gown will ensure you stand out in the most beautiful way. Darker lace tones, like deep blue or burgundy, are perfect for formal dinners, while soft hues like ivory or blush are ideal for weddings and bridal showers.

For a youthful and playful look, lace rompers or playsuits are an excellent option. These are perfect for summer outings, parties, or casual dinners, offering a chic yet relaxed vibe. Pair with sandals for a daytime look or dress it up with heels for a night out. Lace adds a delicate, sophisticated touch, ensuring that even a casual outfit feels elevated.

In conclusion, lace styles for women are versatile and timeless, allowing women to experiment with different looks, from casual to formal. Whether it’s a full lace dress, a delicate lace top, or an elegant lace gown, this fabric brings an unparalleled sense of beauty and charm to any outfit. Embrace the beauty of lace and add a touch of sophistication to your wardrobe with these gorgeous lace styles.

Thomas Partey close to joining Villarreal in week of court appearance | Villarreal

0

The former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is poised to join Villarreal on a free transfer this week.

Partey is due to appear at Westminster magistrates court on Tuesday after being charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault last month, a few days after he left Arsenal having failed to agree a new deal. He has denied all the charges.

Partey is understood to have completed his medical at Villarreal having settled on personal terms for a move back to Spain, where he has played for Atlético Madrid, Mallorca and Almería. He is believed to have agreed a one-year contract with an option to extend by 12 months, and the opportunity to play in the Champions League next season is thought to have been a motivating factor in the 32-year-old’s decision. Partey also had offers from Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

Arsenal are due to host Villarreal in a friendly on Wednesday. Some supporters of the Spanish club have voiced opposition to his expected move, with a hashtag #NoAThomasPartey (No to Thomas Partey) trending on X and others being encouraged to write to Villarreal to express disappointment.

Partey had been the subject of an investigation that began in February 2022, with the allegations relating to three women who reported incidents between 2021 and 2022. Partey’s lawyer has said her client “welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name”.

Partey continued to play for Arsenal after first being arrested on suspicion of rape in July 2022 and held talks about extending his contract after Mikel Arteta said he was keen for him to stay. Arsenal’s manager said last month he was “100%” sure Arsenal followed the correct protocols over Partey.

No syndicated loan for 2025/2026 cocoa season

0

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has clarified that it will not seek syndicated loans to finance cocoa purchases for the 2025/2026 crop season, citing ongoing global cocoa shortages.

In an interview on Eyewitness News on Monday, August 4, the Head of Public Affairs at COCOBOD, Jerome Kwaku Sam, stated categorically that the Board did not secure a syndicated loan for the 2024/2025 season and has no plans to do so this year either.

“We’re not doing syndication. To be very honest, last year [2024], we didn’t do syndication, and this year [2025], we’re not doing syndication. What has necessitated us not to do syndication is that we’re experiencing a global shortage of the cocoa bean,” he explained.

He added that avoiding syndicated loans is also a cost-saving measure in light of current market dynamics.

“We’re not doing syndication, whereby we’re going to incur additional expenses and what have you. That is out of the system or table for now,” he stressed.

His comments come on the heels of an announcement by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson regarding the new producer price for cocoa. At a press briefing on August 4, the Minister acknowledged concerns about the sustainability of Ghana’s long-standing syndicated loan model but noted that the current financing structure would be retained for now.

For decades, Ghana has relied on syndicated loans from international financial institutions to pre-finance cocoa purchases at the start of each season — a practice that has helped ensure timely payments to cocoa farmers and supported production levels.

However, the current shift signals a possible rethinking of that approach amid tightening global supply conditions.

Individuals with tattoos, double piercings, bowed legs or flat feet will be disqualified from joining the Ghana Armed forces

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has clarified why certain physical features such as tattoos, multiple ear piercings, flat feet, and bow legs (commonly called “K legs”) automatically disqualify applicants from being recruited into the military.

Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations for the Ghana Navy, explained during an appearance on TV3’s New Day that the restrictions are necessary to ensure that all recruits are medically fit and physically capable of withstanding the rigours of military training.

FIFA Approves GFA Term Extension and Gender Representation Reforms

Ghana Football Association (GFA)
Ghana Football Association (GFA)

FIFA has endorsed the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) proposal to extend presidential term limits from two to three terms and elevate a female representative to 2nd Vice President.

GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum confirmed the approvals during an August 4 appearance on TV3’s Sports Station, noting FIFA rejected other governance changes like Executive Council expansion, advising a “more structured approach” to broader reforms.

The proposals, developed through stakeholder consultations and submitted to FIFA and CAF, now advance to the GFA Congress for ratification. Amendments require attendance by over 50% of voting delegates and a three-quarters majority vote. The term-limit change will be tabled at the August 12, 2025 Congress.

If adopted, the extension could permit current President Kurt Okraku—who has completed one term—to seek two additional terms, surpassing the existing eight-year cap. The reforms aim to reshape the GFA’s leadership framework, with the Congress outcome determining the association’s trajectory.

Akwatia: Bernard Baidoo clinches candidature in NDC Primaries

0

Legal practitioner Bernard Bediako Baidoo has won the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary held on Monday, August 4.

The party’s legal team member polled 380 votes to beat his close contender, Erasmus Ali Korney, who secured 366 votes.

He defeated former MP Henry Yiadom Boakye, whom he previously represented as legal counsel in court, as Mr Yiadom garnered 232 votes.

The NDC primary was tightly contested among three aspirants: Henry Yiadom Boakye, the incumbent MP until defeat in December 2024; Bernard Bediako Baidoo, a constituency executive and lawyer; and Erasmus Koney Ali, an entrepreneur and newcomer.

The lawyer was declared the winner by the regional Electoral Commission boss, Appiah Baffoe.

The outcome signals a new chapter for the NDC in Akwatia.

The election was necessitated by the sudden demise of sitting MP Ernest Yaw Kumi in July 2025.

With the NDC holding the seat through a narrow margin in 2024, the primary was seen as critical in shaping the party’s bid to reclaim the seat from the ruling NPP in the expected September by-election.

Gov’t Cocoa price based on cooked figures, not farmer needs

0

Ranking Member on Parliament’s Food and Agriculture Committee and MP for Offinso South, Dr. Isaac Yaw Opoku, has slammed the government’s newly announced cocoa producer price, describing it as a “top-bottom” decision based on manipulated figures rather than meaningful stakeholder engagement.

His remarks come after the government announced a 62.58% increase in the cocoa producer price for the 2025/2026 season—from US$3,100 to US$5,040 per tonne. In cedi terms, the price moves from GH₵49,600 to GH₵51,660 per tonne, or GH₵3,228.75 per 64kg bag.

The new price, approved by the Producer Price Review Committee chaired by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, is set to take effect from Thursday, August 7.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Monday, August 4, Dr. Opoku alleged that the figures were pre-determined and that the process lacked transparency and genuine consultation with cocoa farmers.

“What the government is doing is a top-bottom approach. What do we want to pay? What price do we want to give to farmers? So they established that figure before they worked around it to achieve what they gave out to farmers today,” he said.

He also rejected the key assumptions underpinning the pricing.

“In other words, what I am saying is that I do not even agree to the FOB price they are quoting. I do not agree with the cedi exchange rate they are quoting. I do not agree to any condition they have established. I do not agree to any of them,” he added.

Dr. Opoku further accused the government of failing to fulfil its campaign promises to cocoa farmers.

“In any way, what was the basis for promising cocoa farmers that when they win power, they will pay cocoa farmers GH₵6,000 per bag? In fact, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson even went further—at one point, he even promised GH₵7,000. So what was the basis?

“The cocoa farmers don’t know any calculation, they do not believe in these gimmicks, they don’t. All they are asking the government to do is to fulfil its promise of GH₵6,000 per bag,” he stated.

3 arrested for unlawful possession of restricted pharmaceutical drugs and firearm

0

The Northern Regional Police Command has apprehended three suspects — Jabuni Mohammed, Alidu Abdul Samed, and Abdul Aziz, for unlawful possession of restricted pharmaceutical drugs and a firearm near Savelugu.

The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations and are expected to face charges related to the unlawful possession of restricted drugs and firearms.

They were arrested on Sunday, August 3, 2025, after Jabuni, who was driving a Nissan Hardbody pick-up with registration number GN 2812-20, failed to stop at a police checkpoint along the Tamale–Bolgatanga highway.

Police pursued the vehicle until Jabuni abandoned it and attempted to flee into nearby bushland.

He was apprehended, and a search conducted on the vehicle revealed 1,399 blister foils of Tafrodol 120mg — a restricted drug — hidden in a deflated spare tire. A loaded CA161M pistol with six rounds of 9mm ammunition was also found concealed in the headrest.

A statement issued by the Northern Regional Police Command indicated that further investigations led to the arrest of Samed and Aziz, who were allegedly connected to Jabuni.

Jabuni reportedly admitted to working for Samed and Aziz, who had commissioned him to procure the restricted drugs.

Trade Minister inaugurates Interim Management Committee to revive Komenda Sugar Factory

Trade Minister, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare (middle) in a pose with members of the committee Trade Minister, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare (middle) in a pose with members of the committee

In a move to revive the long-dormant Komenda Sugar Factory, the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry has inaugurated an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to lead the operational turnaround of the factory.

The inauguration, held on Monday, August 4, 2025, at the Ministry’s Conference Room, marks a renewed national effort to restore the factory to full functionality and economic relevance.

Inaugurating the Committee, the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, emphasised the significance of the factory as a “prized national asset” initiated under the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government but left to deteriorate due to a host of operational and supply chain challenges.

She recounted the factory’s history, which dates back to 2013 when the Government of Ghana contracted Seftech India Pvt. to construct a sulphurless sugar plant on a turnkey basis.

Designed to produce 125 metric tons of sugar daily, with plans to expand into ethanol production and power generation, the project initially cost $36.25 million, funded through a loan from India EXIM Bank and a grant from EDAIF, now Ghana EXIM Bank.

Despite subsequent efforts, including the engagement of Park Agrotech as a strategic investor in 2020 and the involvement of West Africa Agro-Tech Company Limited (WAATCO) under the 1D1F initiative, the factory has yet to achieve sustainable operations.

“In spite of these interventions, several attempts to operationalise the factory have not been successful,” the Minister noted.

To break this cycle, the Minister announced that President John Dramani Mahama’s government has constituted a high-level IMC tasked with diagnosing and addressing the root issues hindering the factory’s viability.

The six-point Terms of Reference given to the IMC include conducting a technical assessment of the factory’s assets, reviewing its financial and business viability, evaluating the sugarcane raw material supply chain, identifying a credible strategic partner, reviewing the Ministry’s operational roadmap, and proposing a transition plan toward full operations.

Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare underscored the broader national significance of the project: “The Komenda Sugar Factory holds the potential to create numerous jobs in the catchment area and reduce the volume of sugar imports into the country.”

She added that the Ministry is committed to supporting the IMC with the necessary resources to fulfil its mandate effectively.

In his response, the chairman of the IMC, Kwame Owusu Sakyere, expressed appreciation to the President and the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry for entrusting the committee with the task of reviving the factory.

“We are honoured by the confidence reposed in us. We pledge to diligently work on the terms of reference and deliver within the timelines assigned to us.”

The IMC, chaired by Mr. Kwame Owusu Sakyere (Esq.), includes Ing. Douglas Mensah, Mr. John Doku, Lt. Col. (Rtd.) George Afful and Mr. Ransford Vanni Amoah as members.

The Committee is expected to submit its preliminary findings and recommendations to the Ministry within eight weeks.

Unfounded Allegations of Corruption: Impact oniInstitutions and Society

0

Security Consultant, Nana Kweku Ofori Atta Security Consultant, Nana Kweku Ofori Atta

In recent times, allegations of corruption have become a common tool for tarnishing the reputation of institutions and individuals alike. However, when these accusations lack legal basis or substantial evidence, they not only damage the credibility of the accused but also undermine trust in the entire system.

Allegations of corruption without legal basis can arise from various sources, including political motives, personal vendettas, or misinformation. In some cases, individuals or groups may fabricate allegations to discredit their rivals or gain a strategic advantage. Moreover, the proliferation of social media platforms has made it easier for baseless accusations to spread rapidly, amplifying their impact and reach.

The consequences of unfounded allegations of corruption are far-reaching. For the accused institution, such accusations can result in reputational damage, loss of public trust, and decreased funding or support. Additionally, employees may face unwarranted scrutiny and suspicion, leading to demoralization and decreased productivity.

Furthermore, unfounded allegations of corruption contribute to a climate of cynicism and mistrust in society. When people perceive that corruption accusations are used as political tools rather than genuine attempts to combat wrongdoing, they may become disillusioned with the entire anti-corruption framework. This can lead to apathy, disengagement from civic processes, and a weakening of democratic institutions.

Addressing unfounded allegations of corruption requires a multi-faceted approach. Firstly, it is essential to promote transparency and accountability within institutions to minimize opportunities for corruption and build public confidence. Additionally, media literacy programs can help individuals critically evaluate information and discern fact from fiction, reducing the spread of misinformation and baseless accusations. Moreover, legal mechanisms should be strengthened to swiftly investigate and refute unfounded allegations, thereby preventing their escalation and minimizing damage to reputations.

Institutions and individuals must also be proactive in managing their reputations and responding effectively to false accusations. This may involve engaging with the media to provide accurate information, cooperating with investigative bodies to demonstrate transparency, and seeking legal recourse against those responsible for spreading falsehoods.

Furthermore, fostering a culture of integrity and ethical behavior is crucial in combating unfounded allegations of corruption. By promoting values such as honesty, accountability, and fairness, organizations can create a deterrent against the fabrication of false accusations and cultivate trust both internally and externally.

Ultimately, addressing unfounded allegations of corruption requires a collective effort from various stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organizations, media outlets, and the public. By working together to uphold the principles of justice and accountability, society can mitigate the damaging effects of baseless accusations and uphold the integrity of its institutions.

After infecting me with HIV, my husband is threatening to kill himself if I divorce him

File photo of a worried woman File photo of a worried woman

Dear GhanaWeb,

I’ve been married for four years now. My husband is a business man and he travels a lot. We have a two-year-old son but he is barely around.

He mostly spends more than a month when he travels but I never suspected he could be cheating me.

I thought we had a perfect marriage, he took good care of our son and I.

He never smoke nor drank and though he was not mostly with us, I was happy regardless.

He made me cut tides with all my single friends and stayed home as a housewife.

He said there’s no need for me working because he is capable of taking care of us. I had no friends and I’m always at home with our maid.

Last week, a woman came looking for him but he traveled so I told her my husband wasn’t home.

The woman said she is our neighbour so when my husband returns, she would want to see him.

My husband returned four days ago and I informed him that someone came looking for him. The next morning, the woman returned.

My husband asked her if they knew each other but she said no.

The woman asked him if he knew her daughter, she mentioned her name and my husband nodded but looked surprised.

The woman laughed and said she was at the right place after all. She asked my husband if he was aware that her daughter was pregnant, he said yes.

The woman narrated everything my husband did to her daughter. He made the girl commit an abortion and lost her womb.

As though that’s not enough, my husband infected her with HIV. According to her, her daughter was 17 years and a virgin.

Now her daughter has lost herself. She is always smoking and drinking. Whenever my husband and the girl are together, he made her drink alcohol and smoke weed with him.

I was so shocked hearing all these and I even thought she was telling lies because my husband was speechless.

He couldn’t say a word when I asked him to explain himself. I went to the hospital yesterday to get tested and I was told I’m HIV positive.

I couldn’t hold my tears. I’m an orphan, who do I run to? My husband knelt down begging me and I told him I want a divorce. I woke up this morning, packed everything and I was planning on lodging in a hotel for now. He said he wouldn’t allow me to go and threatened to kill himself if I leave.

I’m traumatized at this point. I’ve always been a good wife to him, why would he do this to me?

I’m confused on what to do. I need help!

Mahama commissions new Air Navigation Services Building at KIA

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, Aug 04, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama on Monday commissioned the new Air Navigation Services (ANS) Building at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra (KIA).

The President also performed the launching of the Ghana’s Advanced Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Record (PNR) Systems, which are contained within the building.

The building will serve as the central operational hub for delivering critical air navigation functions, ensuring the safe, orderly and efficient movement of aircraft in both controlled airspace and at aerodromes.

This state-of-the-art infrastructure will support a full suite of aviation services, including Air Traffic Services (ATS), Air Traffic Management (ATM), Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS), Aeronautical Information Services/Aeronautical Information Management (AIS/AIM) and Meteorological Services for Air Navigation (MET).

The ANS build will house the Multi-Agency Command Centre (MACC) – a national collaborative operations centre comprising key stakeholders such as: INTERPOL, Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Ghana Police Service, Customs Division – Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Ghana National Fire Service and other relevant international partners.

The President, in his keynote address, said the event marks another milestone in their effort to strengthen Ghana’s aviation sector and project the country as a regional hub for safe, secure, modern air transport services.

“This is not merely the unveiling of an infrastructural project. It manifests our commitment to transforming our aviation sector through strategic investments, digital innovation, and global best practices,” he stated.

He added: “It represents our resolve to build a 21st century aviation ecosystem that is anchored on safety, efficiency, interagency collaboration, and service excellence. As many know, Ghana has maintained a strong reputation for aviation safety and airspace security in the West African subregion.”

President Mahama said this reputation had not been accidental; stating that it results from deliberate investment in the regulation, in training of personnel, in infrastructure, and the diligence of Ghana Civil Aviation Authority and air navigation professionals; adding that the commissioning of the ANS building further consolidates these efforts.

He said this ultra-modern facility would now serve as a net center for Ghana’s airspace management, and it is fully equipped with the following air traffic services and management, communication, navigation, and surveillance systems, aeronautical information services, and meteorological services.

The President said with this infrastructure, Ghana’s aviation professionals, particularly our air traffic controllers and system engineers, would operate in a conducive, technologically advanced environment, enhancing air safety, reducing delays, and improving coordination within the aircraft flight information region.

He said however even more critically, the facility underpins their broader national vision to position Ghana as the aviation hub of West Africa.

For that to happen, “we must not only build terminals and runways, but we must also invest meaningfully in the invisible backbone of air travel, and that is air navigation and safety oversight,” the President said.

President Mahama said beyond the fiscal infrastructure, the launch of the Advanced Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Record (PNR) System signifies a technological and strategic leap forward.

He said with the API and PNR systems, Ghana joins a growing list of countries that are complying with the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2178, annex 9 of the International Civil Aviation Organization global frameworks that enhance border security, counterterrorism, and safe mobility.

“The importance of these systems cannot be overstated. They will enable our security agencies to collect and process passenger data in real time, identify potential threats before arrival or departure, streamline immigration and custom procedures, and enhance the overall efficiency and security of air travel,” he said.

“This means that Ghana is not just ensuring the safety of its skies. We are contributing to regional and global security architecture in an age where threats transcend our borders and information is our first line of defense.”

Mr. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, the Transport Minister, said the commissioning of the ANS Building and the launch of the API and PNR Systems were a testament to the Government’s commitment towards maintaining a high safety and security of Ghana’s airspace.

“Aviation safety and security are crucial elements of the air transport industry. And effective safety and security measures are essential for maintaining public trust,” he said.

Reverend Stephen Wilfred Arthur, Acting Director-General Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, expressed gratitude to the President for the honour in appointing him as the Acting Director-General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority.

He reiterated his commitment to advancing the President’s vision of “Resetting and Transforming Ghana’s Aviation sector into a resilient, secure and future ready Industry.”

Mr. Francis Bullen Gavor, the CEO of Rock Africa, said the API/PNR Command Centre was a national security infrastructure built to strengthen prearrival intelligence, inter-agencies collaborations and broader decision-making.

The system, he said, replaces the outdated paper-based manifest processes with real time structured and secured data access.

Fitch projects stable Cedi through 2025 and 2026, cautions on gold prices

0

Fitch Solutions says the Ghana cedi’s recent strength is expected to hold through 2025 and 2026, supported by the Bank of Ghana’s robust international reserves of US$7.9 billion and historically high gold prices.

In its latest article, “What Our Clients Want to Know: Sub-Saharan Africa Q3 2025 Macroeconomic Update”, the UK-based firm, however, warned that a sharp drop in gold prices—possibly triggered by easing geopolitical tensions—could pressure the local currency.

“A hypothetical decline in gold prices, which could potentially be triggered by a sudden easing of geopolitical tensions, would quickly erode Ghana’s export earnings, push the current account back into deficit, and undermine reserve adequacy.”

“In such a scenario, the central bank would struggle to defend the cedi and would likely be forced to let the currency weaken”, it added.

The central bank reports that the cedi appreciated by 40.7% against the US dollar in the first seven months of 2025, trading at GH¢10.45 to $1 on the interbank market by end-July. In May and June, the cedi gained 43% and 42.6% respectively against the dollar.

Against the euro, the cedi appreciated by 24.2% in June to GH¢12.25, and by 31.2% against the pound to GH¢14.02.

As of now, the cedi trades at GH¢10.50 to the dollar on the interbank market and GH¢12 on the retail market.

Common reasons Ghana Armed Forces applicants get disqualified

0

File photo of army personnel File photo of army personnel

The Acting Director General of the Public Relations Division of the Ghana Armed Forces, Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, has outlined some factors that disqualify individuals from joining the army.

Speaking in an interview on TV3, Captain Adzo Arhin stated that persons who wish to join the army must, at all costs, avoid tattoos and multiple piercings.

She also pointed out that certain physical features of applicants can disqualify them from being part of the army.

“If you have knock knees, bow legs, flat feet, double piercings, or tattoos, you don’t qualify,” she said.

The captain explained that these conditions disqualify individuals because they affect their ability to perform military duties.

She noted that some of these conditions even pose a danger to applicants who have them.

“Because they will negatively impede your work, training, operations, and activities, that is why you are not selected,” she said.

“If you have flat feet, you cannot stand for extended periods because we have sensitive veins under our feet. A flat-footed person could collapse or even pass out during training, which is why these individuals are not selected,” she added.

She reiterated that, although some foreign armies may accept such conditions, the Ghana Armed Forces does not, because “every military has its own rules and policies.”

China reaffirms zero-tariff access for Ghana despite new US trade tariffs

0

China’s Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Deta, has reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to granting zero-tariff access to products from Ghana and 52 other partner countries. The move, he said, is part of China’s broader efforts to strengthen diplomatic and economic cooperation across Africa.

His remarks come in the wake of the United States’ recent announcement of a 15% tariff on imports from Ghana and other African countries. The US tariffs, announced on 31 July 2025, are set to take effect on 7 August 2025 and are expected to impact a wide range of goods exported to the American market.

Speaking to during the Africa-China Centre for Policy and Advisory (ACCPA) fellowship event in Accra, Ambassador Tong described the zero-tariff policy as mutually beneficial. He confirmed that both countries are currently fine-tuning implementation plans to maximise the benefits.

“China is still offering zero tariffs to all 53 countries that have diplomatic ties with China. We believe this policy has proven helpful. It benefits both China and Ghana,” Ambassador Tong stated.

He added that a framework Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the initiative has already been signed, and that government officials from both sides are actively working to finalise the modalities.

“The two government agencies are currently discussing the detailed arrangement. Both governments are accelerating efforts to determine how to implement the zero-tariff policy,” he explained.

The Chinese Ambassador urged Ghanaian businesses and exporters to seize the opportunity offered by access to China’s vast market.

“China’s market is huge. We are the largest consumer market in the world and are well on our way to becoming the biggest globally. We encourage Ghanaian companies to take advantage of this opportunity and promote your products in China,” he said.

He particularly highlighted the potential of China’s more than 400 million middle-income consumers, who present a growing demand for diverse, quality goods from developing countries like Ghana.

August 7 action against DStv will proceed as planned – Sam George

0

The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has reiterated his resolve to take regulatory action against MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DStv, over what he describes as unfair and exorbitant subscription fees.

His reaffirmation comes amid rising public dissatisfaction over DStv’s pricing model in Ghana — concerns that have prompted calls for intervention from various stakeholders, including the Minority in Parliament.

While the Minority has urged a diplomatic approach, encouraging engagement between the Ministry, MultiChoice Ghana, and the National Communications Authority (NCA), the Minister has insisted that the process of regulatory enforcement will proceed.

In a statement issued on Sunday, August 3, MultiChoice described the directive from the Minister instructing the NCA to suspend its broadcasting licence as “regrettable,” arguing that a further reduction in subscription fees was not feasible under current conditions.

Responding to this position, Sam George dismissed the company’s justification as out of touch with the economic hardships facing Ghanaians.

In a Facebook post on Monday, August 4, he acknowledged the Minority’s appeal for dialogue but insisted that regulatory measures would go ahead as scheduled.

“On the 7th of August, the Regulator would initiate action in line with the terms of the license authorisation and the Electronic Communications Act, Act 775. We would act within the law and in the interest of the Ghanaian people. The RESET agenda demands this action for sanity to prevail,” he wrote.

He further assured that the Ministry would provide a full update to the Parliamentary Committee overseeing the matter once regulatory steps have been completed.

“I remain accountable to the people of Ghana in my service as Minister. I can assure the Committee as a whole that the Ministry would provide a full update when we complete our regulatory actions on 7th August,” he added.

Describing the directive as a last resort, the Minister stressed that the aim is to curb monopolistic practices and ensure subscription fees reflect Ghana’s current economic realities.

Read below the statement by Sam George on Facebook

“I appreciate the call by the NPP Minority on the Communications Select Committee of Parliament for engagement. As Minister and an MP, I have the utmost respect for my oversight Committee.

I can assure the Committee as a whole that the Ministry would provide a full update when we complete our regulatory actions on 7th August.

For the records, let me state that I met the Ghanaian management of DStv on the 27th of June this year to raise my concerns with them. I subsequently wrote to invite their headquarters management and met them on 4th July. A meeting that was held on a holiday and at which I indicated our request of a 30% reduction and the need for DStv to deal with piracy which was being perpetrated on their platform to the detriment of Ghana. (Pictures of both meetings are attached. I have videos as well if needed).

I have always approached this matter with one goal, a fair price for the Ghanaian people. DStv responded with a 9-page letter on 21st July. (If the 1-page letter annoyed you, imagine what was in the 9-pager). The policy directive is a last resort action to protect the Ghanaian public from what appears to be a recalcitrant monopoly which has become tone deaf to the cries of their customers.

On the 7th of August, the Regulator would initiate action in line with the terms of the license authorisation and the Electronic Communications Act, Act 775.

We would act within the law and in the interest of the Ghanaian people. The RESET agenda demands this action for sanity to prevail. I remain accountable to the people of Ghana in my service as Minister.

For God and Country. 🦁🇬🇭

COCOBOD to open upcoming cocoa season earlier than usual – CEO

0

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr. Ransford Abbey, has announced that the upcoming cocoa season will open earlier than usual to address financial and operational challenges.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s show, Dr. Abbey cited the absence of the annual syndicated loan and the need to discourage hoarding by some farmers as key reasons for the decision.

“Last season we opened in September. We’ve observed that some farmers hoard cocoa in anticipation of a new price. This year, because we are not doing syndication, we’ve decided to open the season even earlier,” he explained.

He further stated that the early opening is part of efforts to meet critical financial obligations, including the repayment of cocoa bills.

“We have commitments, including cocoa bills worth GH¢2 million due in September, and the funds must reflect in our accounts by August,” Dr. Abbey noted.

The decision, he added, is expected to stabilize cocoa supply and support COCOBOD’s financial planning in the absence of the syndicated loan facility.

Ghana Boosts Cocoa Price to Farmers by 63%

0

Ghana has increased the price it pays to cocoa farmers by more than 60%, a move that is likely to put pressure on rival producers like Ivory Coast and could push global cocoa costs even higher.

Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson announced on Monday that the new producer price will be $5,040 per tonne, up from the previous rate of $3,100.

This substantial increase is a fulfilment of a campaign promise by President John Mahama, who pledged to ensure farmers receive at least 70% of the Free-On-Board (FOB) value of cocoa.

Ghana, the world’s second-largest cocoa producer, typically sets its prices before Ivory Coast, the largest producer, which currently pays its farmers around $3,900 per tonne.

The government’s decision is aimed at rewarding farmers and keeping them in the cocoa sector, a key part of Ghana’s economy.

Forson also announced the reintroduction of a government programme to provide farmers with free fertilisers, insecticides, and other tools to boost crop yields and income.

The new price is expected to help address the issue of some farmers selling their land to informal gold miners, which has negatively impacted cocoa production.

The move comes at a time when global cocoa prices are already high due to climate challenges and ageing farms.

Ghana’s price controls are intended to stabilise farmer earnings, but critics have previously argued that these controls have not kept pace with global market highs.

Dr Apaak extols O’Reilly SHS as beacon of educational excellence on 100th anniversary

0

Deputy Education Minister, Dr Clement Apaak Deputy Education Minister, Dr Clement Apaak

Deputy Education Minister, Dr Clement Apaak, has lauded O’Reilly Senior High School as a pillar of educational excellence as the school celebrates its Centenary Founder’s Remembrance Day.

Delivering remarks on his behalf by the Director of Tertiary Education, Ministry of Education, DrEmmanuel Newman, during the Centenary Founder’s Remembrance Day Celebration last Friday, the Deputy Minister said the achievement was not just a milestone of longevity but an indication of the lasting impact of the school on generations of Ghanaians.

He praised the school’s resilience in overcoming challenges and grooming students for national leadership.

“For one hundred years, O’Reilly has stood as a beacon of educational excellence, weathering the storms of history through colonial times, independence, and the various challenges that have shaped our nation.

“Through it all, this institution has remained steadfast in its commitment to nurturing young minds and building character, he said.

On academic excellence, Dr Apaak said the school had to be proud of its performance in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The deputy minister reserved praise for the school on co-curricular activities, applauding the performance of old and current students in Athletics and Showbusiness.

“But excellence at O’Reilly extends far beyond academics. This school has produced athletes who have represented Ghana on international stages, artists who have enriched our cultural heritage, and citizens who embody the values of integrity, service, and patriotism that define the best of what it means to be Ghanaian,” he said at the gathering.

During his speech, the deputy minister admitted that the second-cycle institution had challenges, adding that the government was “not oblivious to them”.

Among the difficulties cited are a lack of adequate infrastructure, resource constraints, and the demands of modern education.

He said the Mahama-led administration was committed to making “education better”.

Dr Apaak also expressed appreciation to the alumni and parents of learners for their support, which he noted had contributed immensely to the school’s legacy of excellence.

The deputy minister urged the school to embrace the sweeping change of the digital era by “embracing technology while preserving the timeless values that have made it great”.

The centennial anniversary was well attended by education officials, alumni, staff, and students at the school.

O’Reilly SHS was established in 1925, during the colonial era, by a Sierra Leonean Anglican Priest, Rev Ezekiel Festus O’Reilly. It is the fourth-oldest school in Ghana.

The school, which is located in the Ledzekuku-Krowor Municipality, has produced several successful alumni.
