The sudden demise of Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Ghana’s Defence Minister, and seven others in the helicopter crash has left the entire nation in grief.
Beyond his professional life as a medical doctor and numerous ministerial roles, Dr. Omane Boamah’s political journey was marked by a significant period of transition.

According to Ato Ahwoi, a senior statesman, Dr. Boamah was a staunch supporter of the New Patriotic Party during his days at the University of Ghana, where he served as the President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).
Speaking to Metro TV on Friday, August 8, 2025, the senior statesman disclosed that he was tasked by Ghana’s late former President, John Evans Atta Mills, to recruit all past NUGS presidents to join the NDC campaign in the run-up to the 2008 elections.
Ato Ahwoi stated that the late Dr. Boamah did not like the NDC, as the strong NPP supporter he was at the time.
Despite his initial reservations about the NDC, Mr. Ahwoi said Dr. Boamah eventually ditched the NPP for the NDC, working his way through the ranks to become a valuable member of the party.
“I managed to convince Omane to join the NDC after I had been instructed by Prof. Mills to recruit all past NUGS presidents. He was then with the NPP and didn’t like the NDC, but became very close, like my son,” Mr. Ato Ahwoi said.
The St. James Old Boys Association (JOBA) has expressed their condolences to the bereaved families of the late Squadron Leader Peter Anala and the Ghana Armed Forces.
The late Sqn. Ldr. Anala perished with seven others, including the Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, in a tragic crash which occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6.
“The late Sqn Ldr Anala was among the 2007 Year Group of the Abesim St James Seminary and Senior High School in the Bono Region”, the association indicated in a statement signed by Dr Adu Appiah-Kubi, its Global President.
The statement further said, “As proud ‘Ahotefoɔ’ (saints) and a devoted alumnus of St. James Seminary Senior High School, Sqn. Ldr. Anala exemplified our cherished motto of sincerity, fidelity, and perseverance”.
“His life reflected the discipline of a soldier, the heart of a servant leader, and the faith of a true Catholic gentleman. As a Squadron Leader, he embodied courage, precision, and an unwavering commitment to Excellence”, it stated.
The Association stated that the late Sqn Ldr Anala “led with integrity, inspired his colleagues, and placed the safety and well-being of others above his own. Beyond his military service, he was an active member of the Catholic Church, offering his time, talent, and devotion to the mission of Christ and the welfare of the faithful”.
The JOBA fraternity fondly remembers his humility, professionalism, and infectious drive to serve both his country and his God, noting that he was a true Saint, steadfast in duty, loyal in friendship, and persevering in every challenge.
They extended their deepest condolences to the bereaved family, the Ghana Armed Forces, and the Catholic community, saying “we have lost not only a patriot and a brother but also a shining example of the values we uphold as Ahotefoɔ”.
The Association added that his sacrifice and legacy will be etched in the hearts of all who knew him, and that a funeral and memorial arrangements will be made to honour “our gallant brother will be announced in due course.
“Rest well, Saint. Your race is run; your crown awaits. May his noble soul rest in perfect peace.”

Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has expressed profound sorrow over the military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region that claimed eight lives, including senior government officials and military personnel, on Wednesday, August 6.
The crash, which occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District, killed Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and six others.
Speaking on Friday, August 8, after leading the GJA leadership to lay flowers in honour of the victims, Mr. Dwumfour described the incident as a devastating moment in the nation’s history.
“Wednesday was indeed a Black Wednesday for Ghana. Watching, listening and observing the pains, the grief across the country, the misfortune that has befallen us as a nation, we’re very saddened, we’re heartbroken.
“As members of the inky fraternity and leadership of the 4th Estate, we can’t sit back; we’re here to commiserate with President John Dramani Mahama, the government, leadership of the National Democratic Congress, Ghanaians, the families of these gallant soldiers and gallant men who perished in this unfortunate crash,” he said.
Mr. Dwumfour stressed the importance of dignity in handling the tragedy, urging journalists and the media to exercise restraint and sensitivity in their coverage during the mourning period.
“This is a national tragedy, and we owe it as a duty to preserve it with much decency and dignity. It’s a reason we have cautioned the media and journalists in this country to be very circumspect during this period as we mourn our fallen heroes,” he advised.

Ghana’s former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has visited the family home of the late Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, and Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, to offer his condolences.
Dr. Bawumia was accompanied by several New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs and former parliamentary candidates.

A member of the NPP communication team in the Tano South Constituency, Abdula Jafaru, known as ‘King Jafa’, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to purchase a new presidential jet for the country as a matter of urgency.
Commenting on Bechem-based After2 Radio on the military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6.
The crash, which has plunged the nation into mourning, resulted in the deaths of high-profile officials, including the Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
Also on board were senior national security personnel and crew members of the Ghana Armed Forces.
Abdula Jafaru said, Ghana would have lost the president if not he decided to attend equally important program in Accra because it was possible the president would have used same helicopter to the event because Ghana’s presidential jet has been grounded at the Dassault Falcon Service facility in Le Bourget, France, for four months due to what has been described as massive wear and tear issues.
He said, the current state of the Dassault Falcon 900EX EASy jet include fuel tank contamination, the turbofan engine problems, and other vital components, sources, which engineers say put it at risk of engine failure during flight.
Government sources indicated that the jet was sent to the Dassault Falcon Service facility for the mandatory 24-month inspection, during which the massive extent of corrosion was detected.
Meanwhile, outstanding maintenance activities on the flight include further work on the feeder tanks, pending feedback from Dassault Aviation.
Additionally, he said, the president should order a probable check of all helicopters at the Ghana Armed Forces before use to prevent future occurrences.
Pleading with the president, he added that a fund should be considered for the immediate families of the deceased persons since most were the breadwinners of their families.

The crates of drinks fell off, with many residents rushing to salvage what they can
Chaos erupted on the morning of August 8, 2025, near Nkawkaw, on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, after a truck carrying crates of Guinness beverages encountered a mishap, resulting in a significant spill.
Reports from EDHUB on X indicate that several crates tumbled from the moving vehicle, shattering numerous bottles and littering the road.
The post stated, “Reports reaching us this morning indicate that several crates of Guinness beverages fell off a moving truck on the Accra-Kumasi Highway near Nkawkaw, shattering numerous bottles along the road.
“The incident attracted scores of residents, some of whom were seen picking up unbroken bottles and carrying away entire crates of the beverage.”
Authorities have yet to respond to the incident.
Cleanup efforts on the highway are, however, underway, but traffic delays are expected.

The former Member of Parliament (MP) for Ejisu constituency, John Kumah, died on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at the age of 45.
According to reports, he fell ill and was being transported in an ambulance to Accra when he died.
John Kumah was the founding Managing Director of Majak Associates Ltd, a building and construction firm, and Aduaprokye Chambers, a law firm where he also served as the Managing Partner.
He was appointed as the CEO of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) and served as the MP for Ejisu from January 7, 2021, until his death.
Kumah was also the Deputy Minister of Finance in the NPP government.
Described as a future leader of the NPP party, his death sparked a period of nationwide mourning.
The late deputy minister was buried in his hometown in Onwe, Ejisu, on Saturday, May 18.
Prophet Roja shares John Kumah prophecy
Ghanaian prophet De Lighter Roja has claimed that prior to John Kumah’s death, he visited him at home to deliver a prophecy to him.
Prophet Roja told Angel FM morning show host Saddick Adams, aka Sports Obama, that he foresaw the death of the politician.
He claimed that he visited his home to inform him about his prophecy, but was not taken seriously by Kumah.
Roja claimed that he told the legislator that he was destined to become president of Ghana, but he also faced attempts to cut short his life.
He stated that he started informing Kumah on what to do to save his life, but he cut him short and only told him he would inform his pastor about the prophecy.
Prophet Roja claimed that a short while after that, Kumah died.

Led by the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Abeiku Santana, National Coordinator for the Black Star Experience, Rex Omar, and others, these personalities took part in the ceremony and mourned alongside their colleagues in government.
The wreath-laying formed part of a three-day national mourning period declared by the government.

Abeiku Santana
Media personality and Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Abeiku Santana, was also present and visibly shaken. He stood silently before the pictures of the deceased, but his composure soon gave way to loud sobs.
He removed his glasses and wept like a child, tears streaming down his face in a moment of overwhelming emotion.

Gospel musician Bernice Ansah’s grief was perhaps the most heart-wrenching. She knelt down in front of the portrait of the late Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, sobbing uncontrollably and calling out his name.
According to Bernice, Dr Boamah once helped her during a critical moment in her life.
A man was later seen trying to lift her from the floor as she struggled to regain her composure.

Veteran musician and National Coordinator for the Black Star Experience, Rex Omar, also attended the ceremony. Although he remained composed, he took a moment to speak to the media after paying his respects.
He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and called for a full-scale investigation into the crash.
According to him, the nation owes it to the victims, and to itself, to understand exactly what went wrong.

Friends and family members of the late Stephen King Amoah broke into a spontaneous emotional tirade upon sighting the key suspect in his murder at the premises of the Kaneshie District Court on Friday, August 8, 2025.
Dressed in a long-sleeved shirt with his hands behind him in handcuffs and his gaze partially lowered, Bright Aweh was led out of a police pickup truck by officers and investigators, who ushered him into the court for his hearing.
However, the bereaved friends and family had their emotions triggered in the brief moment of his sighting and broke into individual expressions of grief amidst screams and imprecations directed at the suspect.
“Bright, you’ve caused us worry,” a woman could be seen wailing with her hands slapping her lap in grief.
Wearing black and red shirts with an image of the deceased immigration officer printed on them and the inscription, “Justice for Stephen King Amoah,” the emotionally charged crowd’s reaction compelled the police to ensure Aweh’s swift ushering into the courtroom.

“As a family, we are not happy with what you are doing. Allow the person to walk to the car so everyone can see the crime he has committed. You are working for us, but we are not enthused about how you are going about it. Allow him to walk; nobody is threatening to harm him. It has now gotten to a point of death — you can shoot me if you want to,” a family member expressed, sharing his frustration with the police.
“He didn’t just kill him. He killed him and butchered him by chopping off his arms and legs. Do you think it is easy? You could have just shot him, but you chose to kill him, butcher him, wrap him up, dump him, and burn him. That is like dying three times — do you think it is easy?” another relative stated.

On July 3, 2025, Stephen King Amoah, a 38-year-old Ghana Immigration Service officer, went missing after leaving his home at Ashongman Estate, Accra, to meet a friend, now identified as Bright Aweh, who allegedly owed him GH¢200,000.
Amoah’s family reported him missing on July 4 after his phone became unreachable.
Immigration Officer’s Death: Key suspect rearrested, charged with murder
On July 9, his charred body, riddled with stab wounds, was found in a gutter near GBC Satellite, opposite Comet Estate, and was identified by relatives despite severe burns.
Aweh, also known as Highest Bright or Robert, was arrested as the prime suspect.
Investigations revealed he sent Amoah WhatsApp images of cash bundles to lure him to the meeting.
Aweh provided conflicting statements, claiming he gave Amoah GH¢500,000 to settle a debt but could not explain the money’s source.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service recently announced a significant breakthrough in its investigation into the murder of Stephen King Amoah.
Addressing a joint press conference on Monday, August 4, 2025, the Director-General of CID, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, said the latest investigation revealed more damning evidence against the suspect, Bright Aweh, who was initially arrested and charged with kidnapping.
“The investigation took a decisive turn on July 16, 2025, when the CID, supported by officers from the Counter-Terrorism Unit and the Kwabenya District Police, visited the suspect’s residence. A forensic review revealed bloodstains in the living room, evidence of attempted cleanup, freshly painted walls, and an empty can of spray paint.

“A search of a secondary crime scene near the GBC Satellite Area also uncovered a burnt woollen carpet stained with blood and a partially burnt camouflage fabric. These items were photographed, retrieved, and processed for forensic analysis,” she added.
The CID boss stated that a warrant secured for a search of another room at the suspect’s residence revealed more bloodstains, including a blood-stained fufu pestle discovered within the vicinity.
“On July 24, police obtained a warrant to search a specific room in the suspect’s house. The search revealed additional bloodstains, which were photographed and sampled for forensic analysis. A further search in the bushes approximately 100 meters from the suspect’s house also led to the retrieval of a fufu pestle with bloodstains all over it, wrapped in polythene,” she said.
COP Donkor further disclosed that an impounded vehicle belonging to the suspect also contained bloodstains, all of which tested positive for human blood.
“Police also impounded the suspect’s vehicle, in which bloodstains were found and collected for analysis. I wish to state that the initial blood samples collected have tested positive for human blood. To aid the investigation, the deceased’s mother and son have provided samples for DNA profiling,” she stated.
COP Yaako Donkor disclosed that the suspect, initially charged with kidnapping, has now been charged with murder in light of the new evidence gathered and is expected to reappear in court on August 8, while efforts continue to arrest his accomplices.
“In light of this evidence, the suspect, initially charged with kidnapping, has been re-arrested and formally charged with murder. He is currently in custody following his appearance before the Adabraka District Court and is scheduled to reappear on August 8, 2025.
“A special operation is currently underway to identify and arrest his accomplices, and we are following other vital leads to gather all necessary evidence against the suspect and his accomplices,” she said.

A total of five persons lost their lives in two separate fatal accidents that occurred in the Western North and Western regions within the week.
The first accident happened on the Enchi-Achimfo road in the Western North Region and claimed three lives.
The accident, which occurred at the Asaanu Valley junction in the region, involved a tricycle also called ‘Pragya’ and a truck.
According to information gathered, the tricycle which was moving from the Enchi direction collided with the truck which was also moving from the opposite direction.
Two persons onboard and the rider of the tricycle allegedly died instantly.
In a related development, a taxi driver and his passenger onboard a KIA Picanto with registration number WR 1604 18 were killed in an accident.
The accident, which happened at Mpintsin junction near Sekondi in the Western Region on Wednesday evening, occurred after the Kia Picanto taxi cab collided with another taxi cab (Opel) vehicle with registration number NR 3584 V.
The lifeless bodies of the deceased persons have since been deposited at a hospital morgue.

The Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of eight prominent Ghanaians in the tragic helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
The deceased include former Minister of Defense, Dr Edward Omane Boamah; former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology & Innovation, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed; former Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Dr Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna; former Deputy National Chairman of the NDC, Dr Samuel Sarpong; former NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East, Samuel Aboagye; former Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; former Flying Officer Malin Twum-Ampadu; and former Sgt. In a statement, MIIF described the victims as “fathers, husbands, mentors, and pillars of democracy” whose service to Ghana was marked by patriotism and sacrifice.
The Fund paid special tribute to Dr Omane Boamah’s commitment to national security and Dr Murtala Mohammed’s advocacy for environmental protection and technological advancement.

The Acting Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has urged the public to give their best in service to the country in memory of the sacrifices made by the eight individuals who lost their lives in a helicopter crash last Wednesday.
Speaking after laying a wreath in honour of the eight gallant patriots, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie described the incident as a national tragedy that had robbed the country of distinguished personalities.
He further reiterated calls on the public not to use the tragedy to score political points, but to see it as a rallying call for unity.
“These gallant men died in the course of duty and so we should forge ahead in national unity and not politicise their death.
“We should all have recourse to the legacy they left behind and serve the nation to the best of our ability,” he said.
Background
The victims, including two cabinet ministers and three military personnel, were recovered from the crash site near Sikaman in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.
The ill-fated helicopter had departed Accra at 09:12 hours on Wednesday en route to Obuasi, carrying officials to the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP).
Eyewitnesses reported that the aircraft burst into flames upon impact after losing radar contact shortly after take-off.

Accra, Aug. 8, GNA – The Head of Corporate and Investment Banking at Stanbic Bank, Musah Abdallah, has called for a shift from short-term monetary interventions to deeper structural and fiscal reforms to sustain the country’s recent gains in foreign exchange (forex).
Speaking at the Graphic Business/Stanbic Bank Breakfast Meeting, he emphasized the importance of a more strategic and coordinated approach to economic management.
The breakfast meeting, held under the theme “Sustaining Forex Gains: Business and Economic Impact,” brought together policymakers, economists, industry leaders and financial experts to discuss how Ghana can convert recent foreign exchange stability into long-term economic growth.
Delivering his introductory remarks, Mr. Abdallah said, “Sustaining our forex gains will require more than short-term fixes. It would demand deep structural reforms, ongoing fiscal discipline, complementary and progressive monetary policy, and continuous support for the productive sectors of our economy.”
He further stressed the importance of translating macroeconomic stability into practical benefits for businesses and individuals.
“Today’s theme is so timely and there are some questions we need to answer, like; how do we protect and extend the progress made? How do we channel forex gains into real, tangible development outcomes? How do we ensure that businesses thrive in the new environment?” he asked.
He explained that Stanbic Bank views its role as more than a financial intermediary, positioning itself instead as a partner in national development.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic military helicopter crash that occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, claiming the lives of all eight people on board.

The Asogli State Council has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of eight people in the recent military helicopter crash, describing them as national heroes who served Ghana with dedication and courage.
In a statement signed by its Secretary, Stephen Tetteh, the Council said the Agbogbomefia, Togbe Afede XIV, and the chiefs and people of Asogli had received the news with great pain.

The Spokesperson to the Chief Imam, Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, has provided an explanation for the suspension of burial, in accordance with Islamic tradition and customs, for the two Muslims among the eight individuals who tragically died in the fatal helicopter crash.
Speaking on JoyNews on Friday, August 8, 2025, Shaibu justified the suspension, explaining that the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two individuals, specifically, the explosion caused by the impact of the crash, which charred their bodies, made it nearly impossible to determine their identities.
He said that, to avoid a case of mistaken identity, they decided to allow experts to determine the identities of the deceased victims in order to link them to their rightful families.
“… In this particular case, we will look at the circumstance under which these two Muslims died, the state of the body, and what is required in order to be able to establish the true and authentic identity of the two so, that we don’t do what we call mistaken identity and give one particular body to a different family to which it does not belong. So, it makes sense that while we apply the Islamic rule of flexibility, which in Islam, there’s a principle, that is necessity can make what is prohibited permissible,” he said.
Shaibu further shared; “Under certain circumstance, what is not permissible can become permissible and Islamic ruling in jurisprudence can allow that. On that basis, we can understand and allow the suspension of the burial and then allow the scientists or those experts to do their duty in determining the true identity of those who have passed so, that we can link them up with their families. If we don’t do that, we might replace or mistakenly give the body to a family to which the deceased does not belong to. I think it would not be fair to anyone to suffer such a thing.”
The eight perished victims were en route to Obuasi for an event attendance when the fatal crash happened.
The names of the perished are: Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence; Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister of Environment, Science and Technology; Limuna Muniru, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC; Samuel Aboagye, NADMO Deputy Director-General.
Also confirmed are the deaths of 3 Airforce officers, namely Squadron Leader Peter Anala (the pilot); Flying Officer Twum Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The Bank of Ghana has reinforced its commitment to institutionalising digital currency and modernising its monetary policy framework, through a raft of initiatives aimed at bridging the gap between academic research and central banking.
At the launch of the Bank of Ghana Chair in Finance and Economics at the University of Ghana on Tuesday, Governor, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama outlined a strategy that places intellectual capital at the centre of the central bank’s evolving policy agenda.
The move marks a shift toward embedding digital finance within Ghana’s regulatory and academic infrastructure, with the e-Cedi, Ghana’s central bank digital currency (CBDC), at the core of this transformation.
The Chair, to be housed jointly in the Departments of Economics and Finance, is designed to drive research in areas such as inflation modelling, monetary transmission, regulation of virtual assets, and digital financial inclusion. BoG officials view it as a mechanism to support both long-term policy formation and the development of future technocrats.
“Our aim is to ensure that innovation serves inclusion,” Dr Asiama said, “and that the Ghana cedi, whether in coin, note, or code, remains a symbol of national confidence.”
While CBDC pilots across Africa have attracted global attention, Ghana is among a few countries advancing toward formal deployment. The e-Cedi project, first tested in 2021, has now moved beyond proof-of-concept, with regulators finalising a framework for virtual asset service providers and experimenting through a fintech sandbox.
The BoG’s approach departs from purely technological experimentation. Officials have signalled that the long-term success of digital currency depends as much on intellectual readiness and regulatory coherence as it does on software and infrastructure.
The university partnership is part of a broader attempt to build policy capacity across the financial system. The Governor announced the launch of the Governor’s Future Leaders Fellowship, a new pipeline programme that will send high-performing Ghanaian graduates to global institutions before integrating them back into national policymaking roles.
“Central banks must evolve into intelligence-driven organisations,” Dr Asiama said, noting that data, forecasting, and risk analysis will be critical for managing future shocks and opportunities.
Recent volatility—including the 2022 inflation spike and the sharp depreciation of the cedi—has heightened pressure on monetary authorities to build greater institutional resilience.
The Chair is expected to be a potential template for how central banks in the region can collaborate with academia to address structural challenges, including weak transmission of monetary policy, over-reliance on government debt markets, and informalisation of financial services.
The Bank expects the initiative will also catalyse debate on controversial issues such as exchange rate flexibility and the role of central banks in regulating cryptocurrencies, areas where policy clarity remains limited.
“The digital revolution is not just technological, it is institutional,” Dr Asiama said. “We need frameworks that match the pace of innovation but also reflect our unique national and regional realities.”
The Governor said the Chair, awarded to Professor Paul Alagidede, will function as a research hub and training ground, with the goal of creating a “new generation of thinkers who will shape the financial architecture of tomorrow.”

His Lordship Justice S.A. Brobbey (Rtd) emphasised that, a notable innovation is the use of ADR forms, which outline the agreement, procedure, and judgment, making enforcement easier.
“Utilising such forms can streamline ADR processes, making them more efficient and effective,” he added.
