Ga East Assembly seizes excavators from Ramsar site construction in Abokobi

0

The Ga East Municipal Assembly has impounded excavators from an ongoing construction project at a Ramsar site at Abokobi in Accra.

The assembly alleges that the construction was being executed by the order of Ibrahim Faila, the Municipal Chief Executive for La Nkwantanang, a border locality, who has since demanded the release of the seized items.

Ramsar sites are internationally recognised wetlands designated for their ecological significance.

However, rising encroachment has triggered state-led demolitions aimed at protecting their long-term environmental value.

Blood of crash victims on your hands – Ken Ashigbey to galamsey Politicians

0

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines and Convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, Ken Ashigbey, has issued a sharp rebuke to politically exposed individuals allegedly engaged in illegal mining, holding them morally responsible for the deaths of eight Ghanaians in the recent military helicopter crash.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Friday, August 8, Ing. Ashigbey urged Ghanaians to transform their grief into action and demand genuine accountability in the fight against galamsey, stressing that tears alone would not honour the lives lost.

“I am appealing to the emotions of all of us Ghanaians that we should not just weep for this case and let it pass. We should channel that into positive action. This should be a point of reflection,” he said.

He further called on the government to go beyond deporting illegal miners—especially foreign nationals—and ensure that offenders are fully prosecuted under Ghanaian law.

“We should not just deport galamseyers but make sure they pay fully for the fines stipulated and serve the full sentences that apply. We need to send a strong signal that Ghana is closing this criminal business.

“All of those politically exposed people who are involved in galamsey, the blood of these eight is on your head. You’d better have a change of heart, repent, and step out of it. Enough is enough,” he declared.

The fatal crash occurred on Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, claiming the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed—both known for their uncompromising stance against illegal mining.

Also among the deceased were Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC. The military crew—Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah—also perished.

Preliminary reports indicate that the officials were travelling aboard a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter to Obuasi, a hotspot for illegal mining activities, when the aircraft went off radar.

A state funeral will be held on Friday, August 15. Due to the condition of the remains, samples have been sent to South Africa for DNA testing to aid in identification.

A Timeless Fashion Essential for Every Woman in 2025

0

In the ever-evolving world of fashion, some garments manage to transcend fleeting trends and cement their place as wardrobe mainstays. One such piece is the classy straight dress—a style that has gracefully stood the test of time. Sleek, versatile, and effortlessly chic, the straight dress continues to be a favorite among fashion-forward women in 2025.

At its core, the straight dress is defined by its clean, vertical silhouette. Unlike more form-fitting or flared options, this design skims the body without clinging to the waist or hips, making it flattering for a wide range of figures. “There’s a quiet power in simplicity,” says designer Elena Moreau. “A well-cut straight dress speaks volumes without ever shouting.”

Simplicity That Works for Any Occasion

The beauty of the straight dress lies not only in its aesthetic but also in its unparalleled versatility. It’s a fashion chameleon—easily transformed with accessories, layers, or shoes. For instance, pair a straight-cut midi dress with heels and a tailored blazer for the office, or dress it down with sneakers and a denim jacket for a relaxed weekend vibe.

In 2025, fashion enthusiasts are embracing this adaptability more than ever, especially as more women look for streamlined wardrobes that balance practicality with polish. The straight dress provides just that—one piece, endless possibilities.

Fabrics That Follow the Seasons

Another reason for the dress’s lasting popularity is its availability in a wide range of fabrics. Light cotton or linen versions are ideal for summer, offering breathability and comfort, while luxurious silks and satins elevate the look for evening events or formal gatherings. For autumn and winter, heavier materials like tweed, wool, and ponte knits add warmth without sacrificing elegance.

Modern Twists on a Classic Cut

Designers in 2025 continue to refresh the straight dress with innovative touches—think high slits, off-the-shoulder cuts, contrast stitching, or unique necklines. These small yet impactful details allow wearers to make a statement while preserving the minimalist integrity of the dress.

Additionally, prints have taken center stage this year, with bold florals, abstract shapes, and muted earthy tones dominating runway collections. These modern adaptations ensure the straight dress stays current while maintaining its classic appeal.

From Brunch to Black Tie

One of the most compelling qualities of the straight dress is its ability to transition seamlessly from casual to formal settings. With the right accessories, a single dress can take you from a daytime coffee date to an evening gala. For daytime, soft makeup and flats create an approachable, fresh look. Come evening, swap in statement earrings, a clutch, and heels for instant glamour.

Bodies of crash victims shouldn’t have been put in sacks – Forensic Academy President

0

President of the Ghana Academy of Forensic Sciences, Dr. Pet-Paul Wepeba, has criticised the manner in which the remains of victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash were transported, describing it as undignified and a breach of both local and international best practices.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Friday, August 8, 2025, Dr. Wepeba expressed concern over how the bodies of the eight high-profile victims were placed in sacks and carried to the mortuary.

“When it comes to the bodies that were transported, they are humans, for heaven’s sake. For that matter, the situation where they were put in sacks and transported is not a good practice; it doesn’t add up,” he said.

He explained that in accordance with global standards — and even existing Ghanaian protocols — fatalities from incidents of this nature should be placed in zipped, leak-proof body bags to preserve dignity and prevent contamination.

“International best practices, or even in our country, dictate that when situations of this nature occur, we have body bags which come with zips and do not leak. That is dignity. But that wasn’t done,” Dr. Wepeba stressed.

Beyond the dignity of the deceased, he warned that the method used posed potential public health risks. He noted that the victims’ remains, which were reportedly burnt beyond recognition, could still harbour pathogenic organisms capable of infecting those who handled them.

“There are pathogenic organisms that may have gotten to these individuals who carried them. So, there is some degree of public health hazards associated with it,” he added.

Dr. Wepeba attributed the incident to a lack of local capacity in handling disaster victim recovery, urging agencies such as NADMO, the police, and other relevant institutions to strengthen their preparedness and training for such emergencies.

“If we had the proper capacity, and there are institutions such as NADMO, police, and the others, they would know what to do when situations such as these arise,” he said.

Omane Boamah’s mother stable, back with family in Kwahu – Mark Kevor

0

The Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Mark Oliver Kevor, has disclosed that the mother of the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, is in stable condition and has returned to her family home in Kwahu after being taken to Accra for medical observation.

This followed intervention by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, who personally arranged for her transfer to Accra shortly after she was informed of her son’s demise to ensure she received immediate medical attention if needed.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Friday, August 8, Dr. Kevor described the move as necessary due to the shock and distress the elderly woman suffered upon hearing the news.

He further confirmed that her family has been a pillar of support during this difficult time.

“Currently, his mom is fine. It is not easy losing your only child. It is not easy. At her age, she was expecting that she would rather lead and her son would give her a befitting burial. But now, it is a different story, one that she is obviously not prepared for. She was brought down to Accra from Koforidua on Wednesday, but she is back with her Kwahu family. Her chiefs and family have been around. Also, the family of the father of Dr. Omane Boamah from Effiduase have also been around trying to receive visitors,” he stated.

The helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, claimed the lives of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence, and Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation.

Others confirmed dead were Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The crew members who perished were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Earlier, the Ghana Armed Forces reported that the Z-9 helicopter, carrying three crew members and five passengers, had gone “off the radar.”

The aircraft departed Accra at 09:12 local time (GMT) and was heading to Obuasi for an anti-illegal mining event. Its disappearance triggered an immediate search-and-rescue operation, which later confirmed that all eight people aboard had died.

GES suspends Nkwanta SHS headmaster over unauthorised WASSCE feeding appeal

0

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed the Headmaster of Nkwanta Senior High School in the Nkwanta South Municipality, Solomon Sarpong Bagmae, to step aside from his duties with immediate effect.

The directive, issued by the Acting Oti Regional Director of Education, Mrs Irene Jacqueline Bra, follows allegations that Mr Bagmae engaged the media without authorisation on August 4, 2025, during which he reportedly solicited public support for feeding students taking part in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Mr Bagmae is said to have expressed concern about the well-being of students preparing for their final examinations — a move the GES described as inappropriate.

According to the GES, the action is to allow for an independent and objective investigation into the matter.

Mr Bagmae has been instructed to cease all official duties, refrain from making public statements on the issue, and hand over all school property and administrative responsibilities to the Regional Director of Education.

The GES stated that further instructions will be communicated in due course.

In a statement issued on August 5, the GES said: “This directive follows your alleged unauthorised media engagement on August 4, 2025, during which you reportedly solicited public support for the feeding of students during the ongoing WASSCE without prior approval.”

The GES also denied claims of a “surge in candidate numbers” contributing to a shortage of food supplies.

“The claim that there has been a ‘surge in candidate numbers’ at these schools is entirely false. The relocation of students was a controlled, planned action, and the numbers were well-known and accounted for. The assertion that food supply has been ‘overwhelmed’ is a blatant lie, as a comprehensive and ongoing support system has been put in place by the government and relevant stakeholders.

“We find it deeply disturbing that a headmaster, who is a key figure in the consultative process, would be making such a baseless appeal. This report is a clear attempt to create a false narrative of government inaction and to generate public panic where none is warranted.”

The Ghana Institute of Foresters (GIF) has joined a number of organizations extending condolences to families as the nation mourns 8 persons including two cabinet ministers who perished in a helicopter crash days ago.

According to a statement shared by the GIF “These gallant men were responding to a national call which aims, among others, to regularise and sanitise mining in our landscapes (on and off Reserves) through the formation of cooperatives and acquisition of skills, to ensure environmental conservation, responsible and sustainable mining practices in host mining communities, which are critical issues confronting the nation in recent times,” the statement read.

NPP running mate urges support for bereaved families beyond mourning period

0

Immediate past Minister of Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh Immediate past Minister of Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh

The Presidential Running Mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 general elections and immediate past Minister of Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has called on Ghanaians to soberly reflect on the devastating tragedy that has claimed the lives of gallant and patriotic citizens, including two serving ministers of state.

Speaking at the Jubilee House gardens, where a solemn wreath-laying ceremony was held as part of the three-day national mourning, Dr Opoku Prempeh said the moment should serve as a rallying point for unity and a renewed commitment to building a stronger nation.

He urged politicians to focus their efforts on initiatives that genuinely improve the lives of ordinary Ghanaians, noting that the ultimate measure of leadership is service to the people.

In an emotional tribute, Dr Opoku Prempeh remembered the late Dr Edward Omane Boamah as not only a junior colleague in the medical profession, but also a friend and brother.

He described the late Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed as a close friend with whom he shared daily conversations during the heated days of political campaigning, exchanging ideas and envisioning the Ghana they both aspired to help build.

Reflecting on his long-standing relationship with the late Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Dr Opoku Prempeh recounted how, over the past 25 years, he had attended every Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly meeting to which Members of Parliament were invited by Dr Sarpong, describing their bond as deeply personal and enduring.

He noted that while the nation grieves collectively in this period of mourning, “very soon, when the heat of the moment passes, the bereaved families will be left alone with their pain.”

He therefore called on Ghanaians to continue showing love, compassion, and tangible support to the families long after the ceremonies have ended.

“This is a time for sober reflection,” he said, “a time to stand together, to comfort the grieving, and to commit ourselves once again to building the Ghana our fallen brothers and sisters dreamed of.”

Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has delivered a heartfelt tribute to his late colleague and close friend, Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, who died in Wednesday’s tragic military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two Cabinet ministers.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, August 8, after laying flowers in honour of the victims at the Jubilee House, Mr Ablakwa described Dr Boamah as “my all and confidante,” emphasising that their relationship went far beyond the corridors of politics.

The Minister recalled that their bond was forged during their days as student activists, evolving into a friendship and political partnership built on trust, loyalty, and a shared passion for public service.

“Omane was not just a colleague in Cabinet; he was like a brother to me. We began our political journey together in student activism, and over the years, we shared dreams, challenges, and victories,” Mr Ablakwa said.

Calling the loss “deeply personal,” he noted the difficulty of accepting that “someone you spoke with only days ago is gone.” He described Dr Boamah as a man of principle, courage, and selflessness, adding, “Ghana has lost a patriot, and I have lost my most trusted friend.”

Mr Ablakwa extended his sympathies to the families of all the victims and urged the nation to honour their service and sacrifice.

Effortless Style for Every Occasion

0

The shirt dress has long secured its place as a wardrobe staple — a perfect harmony of comfort, polish, and versatility. As fashion continues to evolve, so too does this classic piece, reinventing itself season after season. Whether you’re dressing for brunch, a day at the office, or an evening stroll, the shirt dress makes looking stylish completely effortless.

Fashion stylist Lena Harper puts it best: “The beauty of the shirt dress lies in its ability to adapt — it’s like a blank canvas that can be tailored to any style or season.”

Let’s explore the trendiest shirt dress styles that are redefining this classic for today’s modern woman.

1. The Classic Button-Down

The traditional button-down shirt dress never goes out of style. With its structured collar, button front, and tailored cut, it’s the epitome of easy sophistication. Choose one in crisp cotton for warmer days or a silk version for a dressier feel. Add a belt to define your waist or layer it under a blazer for work-ready chic. Pair with loafers, sandals, or ankle boots to take this look from desk to dinner.

2. The Oversized Shirt Dress

For those days when comfort is key but style can’t be compromised, the oversized shirt dress delivers. With a loose, airy silhouette, it’s the ultimate weekend staple. Try it in soft pastels or earthy neutrals for a minimalist vibe, or make a statement in bold prints. Complete the look with chunky sneakers or sporty sandals for a relaxed, street-style aesthetic.

3. The Belted Beauty

If you’re after a more tailored look, a belted shirt dress is your best friend. This design cinches the waist, creating an hourglass silhouette while still maintaining the ease of a shirt dress. Go for solids in luxe fabrics for an elegant feel, or embrace playful prints like checks or polka dots. Whether styled with pumps for work or block heels for a lunch date, this version strikes the perfect balance between comfort and class.

4. Statement Sleeves: Puff and Play

Looking to infuse a bit of drama into your look? The puff-sleeve shirt dress offers a feminine twist on a classic design. Voluminous sleeves add movement and flair, making the piece ideal for garden parties or stylish get-togethers. Keep accessories minimal to let the sleeves do the talking. A delicate clutch and heeled sandals will pull the look together beautifully.

5. Denim Done Right

Casual yet undeniably chic, the denim shirt dress brings a rugged charm to this timeless style. It’s perfect for transitional weather — layer it over leggings in cooler months or wear it open as a duster in summer. Roll up the sleeves, add a crossbody bag and boots, and you’ve got a look that’s laid-back and fashion-forward.

6. Midi-Length Sophistication

For a more refined aesthetic, opt for a midi shirt dress. Falling below the knee, this length offers elegance and versatility, ideal for both professional and semi-formal settings. Try one in satin for an evening event or linen for daytime ease. Paired with strappy sandals or kitten heels, the midi shirt dress is a go-to for timeless style.

Final Thoughts

The shirt dress has proven itself to be more than just a trend — it’s a fashion mainstay that adapts with time, body shapes, and personal style. From classic silhouettes to modern twists, there’s a version of the shirt dress for every occasion and mood.

Marc-Andre Ter Stegen reappointed as Barcelona captain

0

The saga involving Barcelona and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has taken several twists on Friday, and an amicable resolution having now been reached between the two parties following developments over the last 24 hours.

On Thursday, Barcelona confirmed that they had opened disciplinary proceedings against Ter Stegen as a result of him refusing to sign the medical document that the club intended to pass over to La Liga in regards to his surgery. Because of this, he was also stripped of the captaincy.

Barcelona have been seeking to use 80% of Ter Stegen’s salary to register Joan Garcia, with their belief that the 33-year-old will be out of action for in excess of four months following back injury. The player initially refused, but he has now relented.

As per an official statement, Barcelona have confirmed that Ter Stegen has now signed the documentation asked of him. As a result, disciplinary proceedings have ended, and he has now been reappointed as club captain.

“FC Barcelona report that Marc-André ter Stegen has signed the authorization for the club’s Medical Services to process the mandatory medical report in La Liga following his surgery. The disciplinary file is closed and the player recovers the captaincy of the first team with immediate effect.”

Ter Stegen had hinted of his intention to ease tensions

Earlier on Friday, Ter Stegen released a statement in which he hinted at his desire to appease Barcelona’s wishes to sign the necessary documentation, and he has now done so. All parties will now be able to put this behind them, with the hope being that relations can be restored in the coming weeks.

La Liga can now sign off on Ter Stegen’s absence being over four months, which would allow Barcelona to register Joan Garcia in his place. Coupled with Inigo Martinez’s imminent move to Al-Nassr, the Catalans should be able to register a number of players in time for next week’s opening fixture against Mallorca.

NPP running mate urges support for bereaved families beyond mourning period

“Let’s finish galamseyers” – Vanderpuye demands ruthless action after Helicopter crash

0

The Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has made an emotional appeal for intensified action against illegal mining in the wake of the helicopter crash that claimed the lives of key government officials.

Speaking at a flower-laying ceremony on Friday, August 8, Vanderpuye said the best way to honour the fallen was to commit fully to ending galamsey.

“For the lives of these people, I would say we should go all out and finish these galamsey people. I will support any decision to go all out in this situation.

These people have sacrificed their lives for the sake of ending galamsey. If they’ve made that sacrifice for us as a country, we have no excuse but to end galamsey,” he stated.

The crash occurred on Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, involving a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter reportedly en route to Obuasi before it went off radar.

Among the dead were Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong.

The three-member flight crew — Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah — also perished.

A state funeral has been scheduled for Friday, August 15. Due to the condition of the remains, samples have been sent to South Africa for DNA testing to confirm identities.

Vanderpuye, visibly moved, warned that the loss of such patriots should mark a turning point in the fight against environmental destruction.

“I wish I had the authority; it would be war. We can’t lose these people and still allow others to remain in the forests and rivers, destroying our environment,” he said.

Defence Committee vows thorough review of helicopter crash probe findings

0

The Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Interior has pledged to conduct a comprehensive review of the findings from the ongoing investigation into the August 6 military helicopter crash that killed eight people, including two ministers of state.

In a statement on Friday, August 8, the Committee commended the Ghana Armed Forces for swiftly initiating a multi-agency probe into the tragedy, which occurred in the Adansi-Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

“We commit to thoroughly reviewing the findings once available and providing our recommendations to strengthen aviation safety, operational protocols, and crisis response across our security sector,” the Committee said.

The crash claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah; Environment, Science and Technology Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna; NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong; NADMO Deputy Director-General Samuel Aboagye; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

As this loss strikes at the heart of our nation’s military leadership, the Committee stated that they stand in solidarity with the bereaved families, the Government, Parliament of Ghana, the Ghana Armed Forces, and the people of Ghana during this solemn time.

The Committee further said it would honour the fallen by redoubling efforts to retool the Ghana Armed Forces to enhance operational efficiency.

“May the departed souls rest in perfect peace, and may their families find strength and comfort during this difficult time,” the statement added.

Embracing the Simple and Chic Side of Ankara Fashion

0

Ankara fabric, also known as African wax print, has long been a symbol of cultural identity, pride, and creativity across the African continent and beyond. Known for its bold colors, striking patterns, and rich heritage, Ankara has become a staple not only in traditional African attire but also in contemporary fashion circles worldwide.

While often associated with elaborate and vibrant ensembles, Ankara also has a more understated side. With the right styling, this bold fabric can take on a minimalist charm that’s both modern and timeless.

“Ankara is more than fabric—it’s a form of storytelling. Even in its simplest form, it speaks volumes about culture, identity, and beauty,” says Nigerian fashion designer Tolu Ajayi.

Here are some effortlessly stylish ways to rock Ankara in a simple and chic manner:

1. The Power of a Clean-Cut Dress

One of the easiest ways to embrace Ankara in a minimalist way is by choosing a well-tailored dress. Think A-line, sheath, or shift silhouettes—styles that offer structure without complication. A knee-length dress with a bold Ankara print requires little else to stand out. Pair it with neutral-toned heels or sandals and minimal jewelry for a refined look that works for work or casual days out.

2. Casual Chic: Ankara Tops with Denim or Neutrals

A great way to tone down the boldness of Ankara is to combine it with staple pieces like jeans or a plain skirt. An off-shoulder or button-up Ankara blouse paired with dark denim or a black pencil skirt creates a balanced look that’s fashionable but not overwhelming. This outfit is perfect for brunches, daytime events, or laid-back hangouts.

3. Skirts That Speak Volumes—Subtly

An Ankara skirt can make a strong fashion statement even with a simple design. Opt for a high-waisted pencil or flared A-line skirt and match it with a plain, fitted top. Keep accessories minimal—a slim belt, delicate earrings, or a small crossbody bag—to let the print be the focus. Add flats or wedges for a comfortable yet classy finish.

4. The Sleek Ankara Jumpsuit

For those who want to combine comfort and sophistication, a tailored Ankara jumpsuit is a top-tier choice. Avoid fussy designs; instead, go for clean lines and a well-fitted silhouette. Whether it’s wide-legged or slim-fit, the key is balance—let the print shine without crowding the look with accessories.

5. Ankara Accessories: Small Touch, Big Impact

If you’re not ready to commit to full Ankara outfits, accessories are a fantastic way to start. Ankara headwraps, earrings, handbags, or shoes can elevate a basic outfit instantly. Wearing a white dress with an Ankara clutch or statement necklace can transform your look from simple to striking—without the need for an entire printed outfit.

6. Midi Dresses: Timeless and Tasteful

A midi-length Ankara dress exudes elegance with minimal effort. Whether it’s a wrap dress, shirt dress, or sleeveless style, the midi cut offers a graceful silhouette suitable for many occasions. Pair it with low heels or pointed flats and a structured handbag for a smart, clean look that never goes out of style.

Conclusion: Less Can Be More

Ankara fashion doesn’t need to be extravagant to make an impression. By embracing simplicity in cuts, color pairing, and accessories, you can let the beauty of the fabric speak for itself. Whether it’s a modest dress, a casual top, or just a pop of print in an accessory, Ankara offers endless possibilities for expressing style and culture with grace.

Ghana Sees Sharp Drop in Bounced Cheques After BoG Crackdown

0

Cheque

Ghana’s banking sector is witnessing a turnaround in payment discipline, with bounced cheques plunging over 15% year-on-year in 2024. ‘

The Bank of Ghana’s latest report reveals only 45,136 dud cheques were recorded down from 53,522 in 2023 attributing the decline to aggressive enforcement and public education campaigns.

“A dud cheque isn’t just inconvenience it’s a criminal offense,” the central bank warned, highlighting legal consequences under the Bank of Ghana Act.

Sustained messaging about credit score damage appears to have hit home: individual violations plummeted 53% (4,972 incidents), while corporate offenders dropped even more sharply at 66% (14,454 cases).

This progress reflects broader credit system reforms. Financial institutions now routinely check credit reports before approving loans, and public awareness of reporting mechanisms has grown.

For market traders and small businesses long burned by worthless paper, the shift brings tangible relief. Could this mark a cultural shift toward financial accountability?

The BoG vows to intensify monitoring and stakeholder collaboration. “These efforts are essential to maintain trust in our payment ecosystem,” the report concluded. As fintech expands nationwide, reliable cheque clearing remains vital for millions unbanked or wary of digital transactions.

New Villarreal signing Thomas Partey has completed his first training session after joining the club officially as a free agent earlier this week.

The reported two year deal sees the Ghanaian international midfielder return to Spain after excelling with Atletico Madrid prior to his move to English Premier League side Arsenal FC.

In a video posted on Villarreal’s X (formerly Twitter) page, Partey was spotted in Villarreal’s gear looking sharp and actively participating in the training session.

32 Year old Thomas Partey’s return to Spain has been engulfed in controversy due to the fallout from his ongoing legal issue over rape and sexual assault charges involving three women.

Five counts of rape involving two women and one count of sexual assault involving another women in England have been slapped on Partey.

The Black Stars Deputy Captain made an appearance at a Westminster Court on August 5 where he was granted conditional bail and as part of the bail conditions, he isn’t allowed to speak with any of the women involved in the case.

He is set to reappear in court on September 2 and his signing has drawn heavy criticism including a supporters Villarreal group.

Reconstitute helicopter crash probe panel; GAF can’t lead – BPS to Mahama

0

The Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to immediately reconstitute the investigation panel tasked with probing the August 6 helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two cabinet ministers.

In a statement issued on Friday, August 8, the BPS expressed concern over the president’s decision to have the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) lead the inquiry, warning that such an approach risks undermining transparency, independence, and public confidence.

“An institution cannot credibly investigate itself in a matter of this magnitude, particularly where public trust, national security, and the loss of high-ranking public officials are at stake,” the statement said.

The Bureau outlined three main objections to a military-led probe: potential conflict of interest since the GAF operated the aircraft; the likelihood of limited public disclosure due to the military’s culture of confidentiality; and the fact that global best practices — including ICAO Annex 13 — require such investigations to be conducted by independent accident investigation authorities.

Citing examples from the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia, the BPS stressed that internationally, military aircraft accidents involving public safety are investigated by independent bodies, often with military cooperation but without military control.

To ensure credibility and alignment with international standards, the Bureau recommended that the investigation panel be reconstituted to include:

  • An independent chairperson without operational or command ties to the GAF.

  • Civil aviation safety experts, both local and international.

  • Observers from Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee.

  • Representatives from independent safety advocacy bodies.

  • Technical advisors from ICAO or regional accident investigation bodies.

“This diverse, independent structure will not only meet international benchmarks but will also preserve the credibility of the investigation and uphold Ghana’s commitment to transparency and public accountability,” the Bureau stated.

The Acting Chief Justice of Ghana, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has called on Ghanaians to remain united and avoid politicising the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight public servants on Wednesday, 6 August.

Speaking at the Ceremonial Gardens of the Presidency on Friday, August 8, where he laid a wreath and lit a candle in memory of the deceased, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie said the Judiciary shares in the pain of the nation.

“On behalf of the Judicial Service of the Judiciary, I released a statement of condolence to the President, the Government, the people of Ghana and the bereaved families,” he said.

“We are here to commiserate with the President by laying our flowers,” he added, standing alongside other state officials and members of the public gathered to honour the fallen.

Referring to his earlier message of condolence, which President John Mahama echoed in his national address, the Acting Chief Justice noted, “These gallant men died in the cause of duty, so we should forge ahead as a national unit and not politicise their deaths.”

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, with a call to reflection, urged citizens to draw inspiration from the lives of the deceased. “We should all have recalls of the legacies they’ve left behind and serve our nation to the best of our ability,” he said.

The Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter crash, which happened on Wednesday, August 6, at the Adansi Akrofuom district, claimed the lives of eight, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, among six others who were on an official assignment.

The second day of the flower-laying and candle-lighting ceremony in honour of eight persons who died in the tragic helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region was filled with many emotional scenes as the nation continues to come to terms with the incident.

The First Lady, Lordina Mahama, and several Ministers of State, including the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, took their turns at the ceremony.

The most emotional scene occurred when the First Lady arrived at the Ceremonial Garden in front of the Jubilee House, where the ceremony was taking place.

Lordina Mahama, minutes after arriving at the garden, held the hand of the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, and began wailing.

She clung to her husband’s Chief of Staff as she could be heard moaning. The First Lady’s children, Farida Mahama and Sharaf Mahama, could be seen trying to console her.

After some minutes, Lordina Mahama composed herself and walked to receive a bouquet of flowers from two military women, accompanied by her children and Julius Debrah.

The military women laid the bouquet in front of an edifice displaying the images of the eight victims, with the inscription, “Ghana Mourns.”

‘Sydney Sweeney’s jeans ad isn’t cheeky branding, it echoes a dangerous past’

0

From wartime posters to 1930s magazines, the ‘ideal woman’ has always been eugenics coded but I think the American Eagle ad is the worst as it mirrors a disturbing past of beauty ideals shaped by racism

Whether it was a cheeky word play, the impact on society is damaging

When Sydney Sweeney’s Good Genes American Eagle ad popped up on my feed, I couldn’t help but feel this ad was more than just a play on words.

In what Donald Trump is calling the “the hottest ad out there”, the blonde hair blued eyed Euphoria star is dressed in double denim. Deadpan, she says: “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality, and even eye colour. My jeans are blue.” A voiceover follows: “Sydney Sweeney has great genes.”

Elsewhere, billboard show Sydney lounging in her Canadian tuxedo with the words: “Sydney Sweeney has great genes.” The word “genes” is crossed out and replaced with “jeans.”

The backlash has been loud. Some people praised it as a ‘clever’ bit of wordplay, nothing to be offended by. But I see it as a nod to the eugenics ideology, the belief that the human race could be “improved” by promoting certain traits – traits historically tied to whiteness. Let me be clear: There’s nothing great about recycling a slogan that sounds like it’s been lifted from eugenics for dummies.

The previous ad's was never as obvious as the Sydney Sweeney one
930s U.S. magazine Physical Culture cover asking: “Shall We Breed or Sterilize Defectives?”

When I compare all three, the Sydney Sweeney ad feels the most blatant. There’s nothing to decode. It’s bold, it’s polished, and it hits exactly the right nerve to go viral. For American Eagle, the rage bait has paid off, as their stock skyrocketed 28 percent in premarket trading after an $85 million operating loss in Q1, this year, according to INC.

I can’t help but think the boom American Eagle have experienced off the back of this ad is less about the pretty woman fronting the campaign, and more because it aligned with the values of a growing and vocal, conservative crowd.

As debate erupted on TikTok, one viral video says: “If you’re not media illiterate, you probably think this is harmless. However, this perpetuates a long line of racism and eugenics that has been present in not just America but all over the world.”

“In the extremely conservative climate we’re in today where right-wing, white nationalism and patriotism is rising, this advert is a dog whistle to the racists out there, confirming their way of thinking and way of life is correct.”

Her family wore hats in the 'MAGA' style
Her family wore hats in the ‘MAGA’ style

But what unsettles me the most is how quick people are to invalidate the message. I’ve seen messages that claim the advert is “not that deep” and simply “clever marketing”. While I can’t deny the wordplay is clever, I think this language, imagery and political landscape that we’re currently in rubs salt in the wound.

It echoes a history where desirability was tied to race, “purity,” and who society deemed “naturally beautiful” and, more dangerously, who they believed deserved to reproduce. That is “deep”.

It’s difficult to ignore Sydney’s political alignment, too. Her family wearing ‘MAGA’ style hats reading ‘Make 60 great again,’ which left fans questioning her political stance and more recently, Florida Department of State records confirmed Sydney registered as a Republican voter in Monroe County on June 14, 2024.

Ultimately, this isn’t about competitiveness or women tearing women down. It’s about holding brands and those in the public eye accountable – especially when they play into dangerous ideologies, intentionally or otherwise.

Vigil at Takoradi Air Force Base honours fallen helicopter crew

A solemn vigil has been held at the Takoradi Air Force Base tonight in memory of three Ghana Air Force personnel who perished in last week’s military helicopter crash.

The fallen crew members, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, were all based at the Takoradi Air Force Base.

They lost their lives alongside five senior government officials, including Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister, Murtala Mohamme, when their helicopter went down in Brofoyedru Sikaman in the Ashanti Region.

The ceremony, which took place at the Takoradi Airport, brought together service personnel, grieving families, and members of the public to pay their last respects.

Candlelight tributes, solemn music, and moments of silence honoured the courage and dedication of the crew, who were on official duty transporting government officials to Obuasi for a flagship mining sector programme.

The crash, which claimed eight lives in total, has plunged the nation into mourning, with flags flying at half-mast and state burial arrangements underway.

MzGee called on Ghanaians to show empathy in these times MzGee called on Ghanaians to show empathy in these times

In the wake of the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two Ghanaian ministers, media personality MzGee has shared an emotional message with her listeners and viewers.

On her show Gee O’Clock, the host said, “It’s difficult to post happy content at this point, not because we cannot, but because a brother’s pain is our pain. In fact, it should be your pain.”

“What are we truly here for? So, what’s all this struggle for?” she asked.

Beyond the questions and sorrow, MzGee called on Ghanaians to show empathy during this difficult time.

She reflected on the pain of the victims’ families, including a two-month-old baby left behind by one of the fallen officers and another victim who had celebrated his marriage only weeks earlier.

“You cannot hear the story and not have any emotions. No. No. God have mercy on us,” she said.

MzGee urged Ghanaians to move beyond blame, conspiracy theories, and divisive commentary.

“This is not a time for a blame game. This is a time for reflection,” she emphasised.

She invited her audience to embrace values such as forgiveness, community, and grace.

“Forgiving people doesn’t mean you have to let them back into your life. You forgive them for your own peace of mind. Show empathy. Treat others well in their down times,” she advised.

As tributes continue to pour in for the fallen public servants and military personnel, MzGee encouraged Ghanaians to hold on to their faith and belief in humanity.

“This is the time for us to hold on to our belief,” she concluded. “I believe in God, and that’s the only thing I can hold on to. It’s not that you’re special—it’s that mercy is keeping us.”

A photo of former Ballon d'Or winners A photo of former Ballon d’Or winners

The Ballon d’Or, football’s most coveted individual accolade, has crowned the game’s greatest talents since 1956, with certain clubs providing the platform for these stars to shine.

FC Barcelona and Real Madrid lead the pack, each boasting an impressive tally of players who have claimed the prestigious award.

Barcelona have produced 12 Ballon d’Or wins, driven by Lionel Messi’s record seven triumphs (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2021) alongside icons like Johan Cruyff (1973, 1974), Rivaldo (1999), Ronaldinho (2005), and Hristo Stoichkov (1994).

Real Madrid also have 12, powered by Cristiano Ronaldo’s four victories (2013, 2014, 2016, 2017), Alfredo Di Stéfano’s two (1957, 1959), and single wins from Raymond Kopa (1958), Luis Figo (2000), Ronaldo Nazário (2002), Fabio Cannavaro (2006), Luka Modrić (2018), and Karim Benzema’s victory in 2022.

These Spanish giants, with 24 combined wins, underscore their dominance in nurturing world-class talent.

Juventus and AC Milan share third place each with eight Ballon d’Or wins, while Bayern Munich comes next with five.

Juventus’ haul includes Michel Platini’s three consecutive wins (1983–1985), Paolo Rossi (1982), Omar Sívori (1961), Roberto Baggio (1993), Zinedine Zidane (1998), and Pavel Nedvěd (2003), reflecting their historic prowess in Italian football.

AC Milan’s eight wins feature legends like Gianni Rivera (1969), Ruud Gullit (1987), Marco van Basten (1988, 1989, 1992), George Weah (1995), Andriy Shevchenko (2004), and Kaká (2007), cementing their legacy as a European powerhouse.

Bayern Munich’s five wins come from Gerd Müller (1970), Franz Beckenbauer (1972, 1976), Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (1980, 1981), and Matthias Sammer (1996), highlighting their consistent production of elite talent.

These clubs’ rich histories and ability to produce Ballon d’Or winners solidify their status as football’s elite, with the 2025 ceremony on September 22.

However, another player outside these top clubs, can win the 2025 Ballon d’Or with PSG’s Ousmane Dembele being the front runner after leading his team to a historic treble.

Ghana’s Cedi Surge Masks Underlying Weaknesses, Warns Advisory

0

Cash Cedi
Cash Cedi

Ghana’s cedi has staged one of Africa’s sharpest recoveries this year, soaring 42.6% against the US dollar since January but analysts caution this strength rests on fragile, temporary pillars.

A new report by economic consultancy EM Advisory reveals the rally, which also saw gains of 30.3% against the British pound and 25.6% against the euro, stems largely from record-high gold prices, IMF bailout disbursements, and heavy central bank intervention rather than durable economic fixes.

While welcoming the reprieve after years of depreciation, the advisory stresses structural flaws remain unaddressed. Ghana still battles productivity gaps, heavy import reliance, and fiscal pressures. “Currency markets are inherently volatile,” notes the report.

“Sharp appreciations can be as destabilising as depreciations if they outpace underlying fundamentals.” The government’s new Gold Board (GoldBod), aimed at capturing more export revenue officially, hasn’t yet resolved these core vulnerabilities.

Even the IMF has urged restraint. It warned Accra against overusing forex interventions, fearing the economy could be exposed when external supports like IMF financing taper off or if gold prices retreat. With debt servicing costs looming, the cedi’s gains could rapidly reverse, potentially undermining exports and spooking investors.

Still, EM Advisory sees a narrow opening. This “precious window of opportunity” must drive reforms for long-term stability. The real question, it concludes, is whether Ghana builds resilience during this breather or simply celebrates until the tide turns.

Stunning Kente Bridal Looks That Inspire

0

Kente, the vibrantly colored and intricately woven fabric, is far more than just a textile—it’s a profound symbol of heritage, history, and pride, especially in Ghana, where it originated. Known for its striking geometric patterns and rich symbolism, Kente has transcended generations, becoming a staple in both traditional and modern African celebrations. In weddings, particularly, Kente holds a cherished place, offering brides an opportunity to showcase elegance while honoring their roots.

As Ghanaian fashion continues to evolve, Kente has emerged as a centerpiece in bridal couture. Whether used in full gowns, accents, or modern cuts, Kente transforms wedding attire into meaningful, wearable art. As the Ghanaian proverb goes, “Cloth is to the African what monuments are to Westerners”—a powerful reminder of Kente’s cultural resonance.

Here are some exquisite Kente bridal styles that celebrate this heritage while embracing contemporary beauty.

1. The Classic Kente Gown

Nothing speaks tradition louder than a full-length gown made entirely of Kente. These gowns are often custom-woven with colors and patterns representing love, prosperity, unity, or family. Brides can opt for various silhouettes, from sleek mermaid cuts that highlight curves to regal ball gowns that bring out a queen-like presence. Embellishments like pearls, sequins, or gold-thread embroidery enhance the richness of the fabric, creating a bridal look that’s both timeless and unforgettable.

2. Kente Meets Lace: A Modern Fusion

For the bride who seeks a blend of cultural authenticity and modern flair, combining Kente with lace is a stylish solution. Many brides pair a Kente bodice with a flowing lace skirt or incorporate lace sleeves into a Kente gown. The delicacy of lace softens the boldness of Kente, creating a balanced, romantic aesthetic. This fusion also allows brides to play with textures and designs while maintaining cultural symbolism.

3. Kente as a Statement Accessory

Minimalist brides who prefer classic white gowns need not forgo tradition. Kente can be subtly but meaningfully incorporated as a sash, shawl, or headwrap. A vibrant Kente veil or a wide belt adds a pop of color and identity to an otherwise neutral look. Even small touches—like custom Kente shoes or a clutch—can pay homage to one’s roots without overpowering the overall aesthetic.

4. Off-Shoulder & Strapless Kente Gowns

Bold and feminine, off-shoulder or strapless designs are rising in popularity among modern brides. When crafted from Kente, these cuts allow the fabric to shine while showing off the bride’s décolletage and shoulders. The result is a confident and contemporary bridal look with strong traditional ties. Paired with statement jewelry, this style radiates poise and pride.

5. Coordinated Kente for Bridesmaids

A cohesive bridal party clad in Kente enhances the cultural ambiance of a wedding. Bridesmaids can be styled in similar or complementing Kente patterns and hues, creating a beautiful visual harmony. Groomsmen can join in the tradition by wearing Kente ties, waistcoats, or pocket squares. This coordinated approach not only looks stunning but also symbolizes unity and shared heritage.

6. Sleek Kente in Modern Silhouettes

Today’s brides are not afraid to experiment, and Kente provides the perfect canvas. From elegant two-piece sets and jumpsuits to asymmetrical gowns and minimalist A-line dresses, modern silhouettes breathe new life into the classic fabric. These contemporary interpretations give brides the freedom to express individuality while staying connected to ancestral roots.

Final Thoughts

Wearing Kente on your wedding day is more than a fashion choice—it’s a tribute to history, identity, and family. Whether you choose a full traditional ensemble or opt for subtle accents, Kente allows every bride to infuse personal meaning into her wedding attire.
