Prominent Ghanaian businessman Kennedy Agyapong, widely known as Kenpong, was reportedly involved in a road accident along the Accraโ€“Winneba highway on August 8, 2025.

Details about the crashโ€™s cause or potential injuries remain unconfirmed as of Sunday, August 10, when news outlet Max Online first shared the report.

The announcement sparked immediate concern across social media, with Ghanaians flooding platforms with messages of support.

Kenpong, a close associate of Highlife icon Daddy Lumba, heads the Kenpong Group of Companies a conglomerate spanning telecom engineering, construction, sports, and tourism.

Authorities have yet to release an official statement, leaving the public awaiting clarity on his condition. The incident highlights ongoing road safety concerns on one of Ghanaโ€™s busiest corridors.

Asante Kotoko will head to Cape Coast for the second phase of their pre-season, the club has confirmed.

The Porcupine Warriors kicked off their preparation for the upcoming campaign last week in Kumasi.

The playing body has been preparing intensively for the upcoming season and will now conclude its pre-season in the Central Region.

After wrapping up their pre-season, Kotoko will head to Accra for the 2025 GHALCA Top 4 tournament, which has been scheduled for August 20-24 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Reds, as part of their pre-season games, have already beaten South African giants Kaizer Chiefs in the Toyota Cup in Durban.

These games form part of the club’s plans to fine-tune its squad ahead of its CAF Confederation Cup campaign and the domestic campaign.

Bawumia: A leader who puts Ghana above politics

0

Former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumiaโ€™s leadership has never been about the politics of division, but about the higher calling of unity.

Throughout his career, he has bridged divides that others found too wide โ€” from bringing hope to underprivileged communities and persons with disabilities, to championing gender equality, youth empowerment, and grassroots development.

His belief is simple: Ghana works best when everyone moves forward together.

Time and again, Dr. Bawumia has shown that political affiliation should never be a barrier to human compassion or national progress. His unwavering commitment to interfaith harmony has strengthened bonds between Christians and Muslims, fostering a climate of mutual respect that enriches Ghanaโ€™s democratic fabric.

That spirit of unity came into sharp focus in the heat of the 2024 general elections.

While the nation watched closely, his calm, peace-first approach reassured Ghanaians that the stability of the country was โ€” and would always remain โ€” his top priority. It was a defining moment that proved his politics is anchored in patriotism, not personal gain.

And now, that same quality has shone through once more.

Following the recent helicopter crash involving President John Dramani Mahama, Dr. Bawumia put aside political rivalry and personally visited him to console and wish him well.

It was an act that resonated deeply with Ghanaians โ€” a reminder that before titles and party colours, we are one people, united in shared humanity.

Cleaner kitchens, healthier lives: Ghanaโ€™s cookstoveโ€ฆ

Accra โ€“ Ghana is stepping up efforts to move households away from firewood and charcoal, which are still used in 78 percent of homes and contribute to deforestation, indoor air pollution and carbon emissions. The government is promoting cleaner cookstoves as a safer, more efficient alternative.

The Clean Cookstove Initiative is focused on cutting wood fuel demand and reducing the health risks linked to smoke inhalation โ€“ particularly among women and children. It also aims to help curb climate change and protect forests.

The programme is targeting smallholder farmers and rural households in five regions: Western, Central, Ashanti, Eastern and Upper West. There are plans to extend it to more parts of the country.

The stoves are designed to use around 60 percent less wood than traditional models. They are being developed and distributed in partnership with Envirofit International, a US-based clean energy company.

The project is one of six climate mitigation schemes in Ghana backed by the KliK Foundation, a Swiss organisation that has pledged about $850 million in funding.

Cleaner cooking could save 4.7 million lives in Africa by 2040, IEA says

Community impact

So far, more than 180,000 families have taken part in the programme. Many have reported saving money on fuel and noticing fewer health problems linked to smoke.

Aminatu Hakim, a mother of six from Pullima near Tumu, in the Upper West Region, says the savings she has made from using the new stove have allowed her to reinvest in her small business.

“Iโ€™ve invested the savings in my onion business,” she told RFI. “The proceeds are now supporting my familyโ€™s daily needs.”

She described the clean cookstove as fast, efficient and significantly less reliant on charcoal than traditional cooking methods.

Ghana unveils West Africa’s largest floating solar project, boosting renewable energy ambitions

Dr Daniel Tutu Benefoh, head of Ghanaโ€™s Carbon Market Office, said the cleaner cookstoves would ease pressure on household budgets and improve public health. โ€œThe technology reduces smoke and toxic emissions in individual households by as much as 80 percent,โ€ he said.

The government plans to distribute another 500,000 clean cookstoves over the next three years, with a continued focus on rural and underserved areas.

Across Africa, around four in five people still cook with polluting fuels such as firewood, charcoal and kerosene โ€“ often over open flames in poorly ventilated spaces.

The World Bank estimates that this leads to around 600,000 premature deaths each year, making dirty cooking a bigger killer on the continent than malaria.

Ghanaian pastor (R) has chided Prophet Roja (L) for failing to thwart helicopter crash prophecy Ghanaian pastor (R) has chided Prophet Roja (L) for failing to thwart helicopter crash prophecy

A Ghanaian pastor has criticised preacher Samuel Henry, popularly known as Prophet Roja, over his prophecy about a flight crash earlier in 2025.

Prophet Roja had claimed that God revealed to him a vision of a domestic flight crash in Ghana.

According to him, the vision showed a plane travelling from Accra to Kumasi that would crash shortly after takeoff on July 29, 2025.

He said the crash in his vision would be severe, with fewer than 20 people surviving. Because of this, he called on Christians in Ghana to pray to avert the disaster.

Black Wednesday: Celebrities react tragic helicopter crash

The prophecy has resurfaced online following the August 6 helicopter crash that killed two ministers, Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, along with six others.

Speaking at a vigil on August 9, 2025, the pastor lambasted Prophet Roja over how he handled the matter and questioned his credibility, saying he is not recognised as part of the prophetic ministry in Ghana.

The clergyman described the prophecy as โ€œsorceryโ€ and โ€œdivination,โ€ arguing that genuine prophecy should offer a way out because โ€œGod reveals to warn, not to destroy.โ€

Helicopter Crash: This pain won’t deter us from serving Ghana โ€“ Dzifa Gomashie

“He [Roja] is not part of the prophetic and apostolic ministry. He doesnโ€™t understand. Even in life, when you travel, some people will ask about your credentials if they want you to preach to them. Theyโ€™ll ask about your level of experience. But itโ€™s only in Ghana that someone will just get up, go on social media, and make these kinds of statements.

“I donโ€™t believe this is what the Lord revealed. Itโ€™s divination. Iโ€™m telling you, that Roja man should be careful. Heโ€™s not mature at all. This is not prophecy. A prophecy must have a way out. This is what we call divination and sorcery. I can stand and make a statement, and Iโ€™ll make projections, and it will come to pass,” the pastor fumed in a viral video on X.

Aggrieved Zoomlion employees call for government intervention in unpaid wages

Aggrieved employees of Zoomlion, a waste management and sanitation firm, in the Atebubu/Amantin Municipality of the Bono East Region have called on the government to intervene in the payment of their 20-month outstanding monthly salaries.

According to the employees, mostly women, despite their efforts to keep the towns and communities in the district clean, the company has failed to pay their monthly salaries, putting their families through economic difficulties.

Addressing a news conference at Atebubu, the Municipal capital, Madam Alice Osei, the spokesperson for the aggrieved employees, said the situation was even affecting their marriages, as they could no longer contribute to the upkeep of their respective families.

She said the employees had persistently โ€œchase the paymentsโ€ of their outstanding monthly salaries but to no avail, and appealed for urgent intervention from the government.

Mad Osei, also the Vegetable Queen at the Atebubu Market said: โ€œsome of us are also single mothers and we canโ€™t even afford to pay our childrenโ€™s school feesโ€.

โ€œIn fact, the surest way the company will listen to us and pay our monthly salaries and arrears is for the government to intervene because they have not shown any concern that they are sensitive to our plightโ€, she stated.

Madam Osei said despite their outstanding salary arrears, the employees still remained at post working to keep the environment clean.

Norwich City midfielder Forson Amankwah says he is targeting playing at the 2026 World Cup with the Black Stars.

Ghana are on the verge of securing qualification for the tournament, which will be hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico next year.

The Black Stars enhanced their chances following back-to-back wins against Chad and Madagascar in the Matchday 5 and 6 games in March earlier this year.

With four matches to end the qualifiers, Amankwah, who made his debut for the senior national team a year ago, is aiming to play at the Mundial next year.

โ€œDefinitely, I’m dreaming of going to the World Cup because if you’re a football player, especially a young player playing in the World Cup says a lot,” he told Flashscore.

“I think it’s really good to be part, because I want to be part, so I need to do everything to be part of the squad,” he added.

Ghana will face Chad and Mali in the Matchday 7 and 8 games in September before wrapping up their qualifiers in October against Comoros and the Central African Republic.

Ukraineโ€™s European allies insist peace talks must include Kyiv

0

European allies have rallied behind Ukraine in a renewed surge of support, insisting that any peace talks with Russia must include Kyiv.

A joint statement issued by the leaders of the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Finland and the European Commission came ahead of US President Donald Trumpโ€™s meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday.

A White House official has said that Trump is willing to hold a trilateral meeting, which would also include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but, for now, it remains a Trump-Putin summit, as initially requested by the Russian leader.

Zelensky has said any agreements without Kyiv will amount to โ€œdead decisionsโ€.

Trump has previously suggested that he could start by meeting only with Putin, telling reporters he planned to โ€œstart with Russia.โ€ But the US president also said that he believed โ€œwe have a shot atโ€ organising a trilateral meeting with both Putin and Zelensky.

Whether Putin would agree to this is unclear โ€“ he has refused several opportunities to hold direct talks, and the two leaders have not met face-to-face since Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago.

Speaking on Friday, Trump also suggested that there โ€œwill be some swapping of territoriesโ€ in order for Moscow and Kyiv to reach an agreement, to which Zelensky reacted strongly.

โ€œWe will not reward Russia for what it has perpetrated,โ€ he said on Telegram. โ€œAny decisions against us, any decisions without Ukraine, are also decisions against peace.โ€

โ€œThe Russiansโ€ฆ still impose the idea of โ€˜exchangingโ€™ Ukrainian territory for Ukrainian territory, with consequences that guarantee nothing but more convenient positions for the Russians to resume the war,โ€ he added defiantly.

CBS, the BBCโ€™s US media partner, has reported that the White House is trying to sway European allies to accept an agreement that would include Russia taking the entire Donbas region in eastern Ukraine, and keeping the Crimean Peninsula.

The European leaders, in their statement released late on Saturday night, stressed that โ€œinternational borders must not be changed by forceโ€.

โ€œUkraine has the freedom of choice over its own destiny,โ€ they said, stressing that their nations would continue to support Ukraine diplomatically, militarily and financially.

Ghanaian dancehall star Stonebwoy has voiced profound grief following the deadly helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two government ministers and military personnel.

Speaking emotionally to TV3 on August 7, 2025, the artist described the accident as a devastating blow for the entire nation.

He revealed deep personal connections to the late Trade and Industry Minister, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and former Ashanti Regional Minister Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, considering both men father figures.

โ€œItโ€™s difficult to comprehend. We are all just shockedโ€ฆ itโ€™s crazy,โ€ Stonebwoy stated, his voice heavy with sorrow. He spoke of Murtala Mohammedโ€™s significant support, calling him โ€œbig BHIM nation, big supportโ€ and recalling how the minister publicly praised his music during an interview, bridging politics and appreciation for reggae and dancehall.

The tragedy struck during an already painful period for the artist, marking the tenth anniversary of his own motherโ€™s passing this August. โ€œI was already in a certain mood. And then all these were added on. Itโ€™s not easy,โ€ he shared.

Stonebwoy emphasized that the loss extends far beyond the families directly affected, calling it a national calamity. He urged the government to take decisive action to prevent similar disasters in the future. โ€œGhana has been hit,โ€ he asserted.

โ€œThe state must employ measures to avoid such disasters.โ€ His call underscores a widespread demand for answers and improved safety protocols after the fatal crash.

Seven arrested for alleged fuel tanker hijack

0

Seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the armed hijacking of a 5,400-litre fuel tanker in the early hours of August 7, 2025.

According to the Ghana Police Service, a coordinated snap check operation led to the arrests across two regions โ€” Greater Accra and Eastern.

The incident occurred at about 12:30 a.m. when officers at the Ablekuma Borkorborkor checkpoint in Accra stopped a green pickup truck carrying three passengers in its open bucket. As the police approached, two of the passengers fled, shouting that they had been attacked by armed men who had hijacked their fuel tanker near Nsawam the previous night.

The driver of the pickup sped off, abandoning the third passenger, who was arrested after a brief chase.

Police said the victims, both tanker drivers from Tema, were handcuffed and transported in the pickup by the suspects until the intervention at the checkpoint. They later confirmed the stolen tankerโ€™s registration as GT 2493โ€“20.

Following this lead, police intelligence led to the arrest of six additional suspects at Asikwa Junction near Bunso in the Eastern Region. Officers there recovered the stolen tanker, another tanker with registration GN 804โ€“13, and a pumping machine believed to have been used to transfer the stolen fuel. A Volkswagen Golf (GW 5185โ€“Z) linked to the suspects was also seized.

All seven suspects are in police custody and will be arraigned. The recovered fuel tankers and other exhibits remain with the police as investigations continue.

The police have assured the public that further action will be taken and that the suspects will face justice for their role in the high-profile robbery.

The Ghana Police Service also commended the officers whose swift response and coordination led to the successful arrests.

‘My prophecy about Black Sherif is still hanging in the air’ โ€“ Prophet Fire Oja

0

Prophet Fire Oja prophecied about Black Sherif Prophet Fire Oja prophecied about Black Sherif

Every December 31, Christians across Ghana gather in churches for an all-night service to pray and cross over into the new year with faith and hope.

It was during one of these watch night services, on December 31, 2024, that Ghanaian prophet Fire Oja made a prophecy about one of Ghanaโ€™s musicians, Black Sherif.

Kumchacha explains why he was seen copying tribute in Daddy Lumba’s book of condolence

On that night, Fire Oja told his congregation that it had been revealed to him that the musician would no longer produce a hit song.

According to the prophet, his vision showed that colleagues in the music industry were working against Black Sherif, and he warned that this would lead to a decline in the young artisteโ€™s career.

However, in the months that followed, Black Sherif not only released a hit song, but also dropped an entire album, Iron Boy, which has dominated charts on almost every streaming platform.

The project has become a street anthem, with several songs making waves in Ghana and beyond.

In an interview on Onua FM on August 8, 2025, Prophet Fire Oja addressed the publicโ€™s reaction to his prophecy.

Kumchacha explains why he was seen copying tribute in Daddy Lumba’s book of condolence

He explained that situations like this are the reason some prophets choose to keep certain revelations to themselves, as they often face mockery and disrespect, particularly from the youth.

Fire Oja insisted that his prophecy about Black Sherif remains valid, even though the musician is currently enjoying massive success.

He added that after the release of Iron Boy, many people began calling him a fake prophet because the outcome appeared to contradict his words.

โ€œThe reason some preachers avoid discussing certain prophecies is that, if there were an imminent incident they could intercede for, many Ghanaians, especially the youth, do not respect prophetic ministry. They tend to disrespect you without hesitation.

My prophecy about Black Sherif has not changed; it is still hanging in the air. I prophesied that something would happen to his career, leading to a point where he would be unheard of. I advised him that if he wanted to continue being popular, he should seek guidance from some powerful men of God.

However, after the prophecy, Black Sherif released a project that became a hit, and now everyone is singing his song. As a result, some people in Ghana have called me fake, claiming my prophecy did not come to pass as I mentioned,โ€ Fire Oja stated.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States has announced that one more Ghanaian, believed to be involved in the stealing of over $100 million in a large-scale international fraud scheme, is at large.

The suspect, named by the FBI as Patrick Kwame Asare, also known as Borgar.

According to the FBI and the Office of the State Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Patrick Kwame Asare is one of four Ghanaians believed to be members of the notorious criminal gang, The Enterprise.

A joint statement by the FBI and the State Attorney’s Office announcing the extradition of three of the four Ghanaians โ€“ Isaac Oduro Boateng (Kofi Boat), Insuah Ahmed (Pascal) and Derrick Van Yeboah (Van) โ€“ after their arrest by Ghana’s security authorities said that Borgar had not been arrested yet.

The statement indicated that Kofi Boat, Pascal and Van, who were extradited to the US on August 7, 2025, would be prosecuted for roles in an international criminal organisation that stole more than $100 million from victims via romance scams and business email compromises.

“United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Jay Clayton, and Assistant Director in Charge of the New York Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Christopher G. Raia, announced today the unsealing of an indictment charging four Ghanaian nationals โ€“ Isaac Oduro Boateng, a.k.a ‘Kofi Boat,โ€™ Insuah Ahmed, a.k.a โ€˜Pascal,โ€™ Derrick Van Yeboah, a.k.a โ€˜Van,โ€™ and Patrick Kwame Asare, a.k.a โ€˜Borgarโ€™ โ€“ for their roles in an international criminal organisation that stole more than $100 million from victims via romance scams and business email compromises.

“They further announced Ghanaโ€™s extradition of Boateng, Ahmed, and Van Yeboah, who arrived in the U.S. on August 7, 2025, and will be presented today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Lehrburger. Asare remains at large,โ€ parts of the statement read.

2 Ghanaian-Americans arrested over US$7m global fraud scheme – Report

The FBI Assistant Director in Charge said that the Ghanaians, who are believed to be high-ranking members of The Enterprise, scammed Americans through various means, including tricking vulnerable older men and women into believing that they were in a relationship.

The defendants have been brought to the United States to be held accountable for their alleged roles in scamming companies and vulnerable Americans out of over $100 million.

โ€œDeceiving businesses using email compromise campaigns and tricking innocent elderly victims through fraudulent companionship in order to exploit their trust and finances is not merely appalling but illegal. The FBI will continue to ensure anyone who preys on companies and vulnerable Americans online is made to face the criminal justice system,โ€ Raiaย said.

The two-legged tie will commence with the first leg hosted by Bibiani Goldstars in Kumasi between September 19 and 21.

The Ghanaian champions will aim to capitalise on home advantage to build a strong foundation before travelling to Algeria for the return leg, scheduled for September 26 to 28.

Both teams will be eager to secure progression to the next stage in what promises to be a tightly contested encounter. JS Kabylie come into the tie as a formidable opponent, having finished as runners-up in the 2024/25 Algerian League season, just two points behind champions MC Alger.

Their experience in continental competitions will test the resolve and quality of the Ghanaian side, making the away leg critical for Bibiani Goldstars as they seek to defy expectations.

The winner of this preliminary round will advance to face either Sierra Leoneโ€™s East End Lions or Tunisiaโ€™s Monastir in the second preliminary round, keeping their hopes alive to reach the lucrative group stage of the CAF Champions League.

For Bibiani Goldstars, this is an unparalleled opportunity to announce themselves on the continental stage and build on their growing domestic success.

The competition timeline sees subsequent rounds intensifying, with the second preliminary legs scheduled for mid to late October, followed by the group stage kick-off on November 21, 2025.

The knockout phase is set to begin in March 2026, setting the stage for an enthralling journey for clubs across Africa, including the ambitious Ghanaian champions.

Mars rock found in Niger sells for millions in New York

0

“Brazen! It is brazen!” Prof Paul Sereno says down the phone line from Chicago.

He makes no effort to disguise his anger that a rare meteorite from Mars discovered two years ago in the West African nation of Niger ended up being auctioned off in New York last month to an unnamed buyer.

The palaeontologist, who has close connections with the country, believes it should be back in Niger.

This millions-of-years-old piece of the Red Planet, the largest ever found on Earth, fetched $4.3m (ยฃ3.2m) at Sotheby’s. Like the buyer, the seller was kept anonymous.

But it is unclear if any of this money went to Niger.

Fragments of extraterrestrial material that have made their way to Earth have long inspired reverence among humans โ€“ some ending up as religious objects, others as curiosities for display. More recently, many have become the subject of scientific study.

The trade in meteorites has been compared to the art market, with aesthetics and rarity affecting the price.

At first, there was a sense of awe surrounding the public display of this extraordinary Martian find โ€“ less than 400 of the 50,000 meteorites discovered have been shown to come from our planetary neighbour.

The photographs taken at Sotheby’s of the 24.7kg (54lb) rock โ€“ appearing in the lights to glow silver and red โ€“ compounded this feeling.

But then some people started asking questions about how it ended up under the auctioneer’s hammer.

Not least the government of Niger itself, which, in a statement, “expressed doubts about the legality of its export, raising concerns about possible illicit international trafficking”.

Sotheby’s strongly disputes this, saying the correct procedures were followed, but Niger has now launched an investigation into the circumstances of the discovery and sale of the meteorite, which has been given the scientific and unromantic name NWA 16788 (NWA standing for north-west Africa).

Little has been made public about how it ended up at a world-renowned auction house in the US.

An Italian academic article published last year said that it was found on 16 November 2023 in the Sahara Desert in Niger’s Agadez region, 90km (56 miles) to the west of the Chirfa Oasis, by “a meteorite hunter, whose identity remained undisclosed”.

Meteorites can fall anywhere on Earth, but because of the favourable climate for preservation and the lack of human disturbance, the Sahara has become a prime spot for their discovery. People scour the inhospitable landscape stretching across several countries in the hope of finding one to sell on.

According to the Italian article, NWA 16788, was “sold by the local community to an international dealer” and was then transferred to a private gallery in the Italian city of Arezzo.

The University of Florence’s magazine described the person as “an important Italian gallery owner”.

A team of scientists led by Giovanni Pratesi, mineralogy professor at the university, was able to examine it to learn more about its structure and where it came from. The meteorite was then briefly on display last year in Italy, including at the Italian Space Agency in Rome.

It was next seen in public in New York last month, minus two slices that stayed in Italy for more research.

Sotheby’s said that NWA 16788 was “exported from Niger and transported in line with all relevant international procedures.

“As with everything we sell, all relevant documentation was in order at each stage of its journey, in accordance with best practice and the requirements of the countries involved.”

A spokesperson added that Sotheby’s was aware of reports that Niger is investigating the export of the meteorite and “we are reviewing the information available to us in light of the question raised”.

Prof Sereno, who founded the organisation Niger Heritage a decade ago, is convinced Nigerien law was broken.

The academic with the University of Chicago, who has spent years uncovering the country’s vast deposits of dinosaur bones in the Sahara, campaigns to get Niger’s cultural and natural heritage โ€“ including anything that has fallen from outer space – returned.

A stunning museum on an island on the River Niger that runs through the capital, Niamey, is being planned to house these artefacts.

“International law says you cannot simply take something that is important to the heritage of a country – be it a cultural item, a physical item, a natural item, an extraterrestrial item – out of the country. You know we’ve moved on from colonial times when all this was okay,” Prof Sereno says.

A series of global agreements, including under the UN’s cultural organisation Unesco, have tried to regulate the trade in these objects. But, according to a 2019 study by international law expert Max Gounelle, when it comes to meteorites, while they could be included, there remains some ambiguity about whether they are covered by these agreements. It is left to individual states to clarify the position.

Niger passed its own law in 1997 aimed at protecting its heritage.

Prof Sereno points to one section with a detailed list of all the categories included. “Mineralogical specimens” are mentioned among the art works, architecture and archaeological finds but meteorites are not specifically named.

In its statement on the Sotheby’s sale, Niger admitted that it “does not yet have specific legislation on meteorites” – a line that the auction house also pointed out. But it remains unclear how someone was able to get such a heavy, conspicuous artefact out of the country without the authorities apparently noticing.

Morocco has faced a similar issue with the huge number of meteorites – more than 1,000 – found within its borders, which include a part of the Sahara.

More than two decades ago the country experienced what author Helen Gordon described as a “Saharan gold rush”, fuelled in part by laxer regulations and a more stable political environment than some of its neighbours.

In her recent book The Meteorites, she wrote that Morocco was “one of the world’s greatest exporters of space rocks”.

Prof Hasnaa Chennaoui Aoudjehane has spent much of the past 25 years trying to hold on to some of that extraterrestrial material for her country.

“It’s a part of us, it’s a part of our heritageโ€ฆ it’s part of our identity and it’s important to be proud of the richness of the country,” the geologist tells the BBC.

The professor is not against the trade in meteorites but has been instrumental in the introduction of measures aimed at regulating the business. She admits though that the new rules have not been entirely successful in stemming the flow of the meteorites.

In 2011, Prof Chennaoui was responsible for gathering material in the desert from an observed meteorite fall that turned out to be from Mars.

Later named the Tissint meteorite, it weighed 7kg in all, but now she says only 30g remain in Morocco. Some of the rest is in museums around the world, with the biggest piece on display in London’s Natural History Museum.

Reflecting on the fate of Niger’s Martian meteorite, she says she was not surprised as it is “something that I’m living with for 25 years. It’s a pity, we cannot be happy with this, but it’s the same state in all our countries.”

Prof Sereno hopes that the Sotheby’s sale will prove a turning-point – firstly by motivating the Nigerien authorities to act and secondly “if it ever sees the light of day in a public museum, [the museum] is going to have to deal with the fact that Niger is openly contesting it”.

Royal Daisy school grants full scholarships to Mepe flood victims

0

Several children displaced by the 2023 Akosombo Dam spillage have been handed a fresh start after the Echoes of Royal Daisy School in Accra offered them full scholarships to continue their education.

The September 15, 2023, spillage devastated Mepe and nearby communities, sweeping away homes, classrooms, and a sense of normalcy for thousands. Nearly 39,000 people were displaced, and hundreds of downstream settlements were submerged.

Among the worst affected were schoolchildren whose education was abruptly disrupted when floodwaters washed away their learning facilities. For many, the future looked bleak โ€” until Royal Daisy School stepped in.

Teacher Bright Edem, speaking to Channel One TV on Friday, August 9, recounted the challenges of supporting the displaced pupils to catch up academically.

โ€œIt hasnโ€™t been an easy experience. Before they came here, due to where they were coming from, you could see that academically, they were a little bit low. It wasnโ€™t easy. We took them through what we had to take them, and I can confidently say that we will get good results from them.โ€

The schoolโ€™s proprietress, Freda Faith Mensah, said she was moved to act after learning about the tragedy on television.

โ€œI heard the news on Channel One TV in September and decided to help them because it was very pathetic. It hasnโ€™t been easy, especially in academics. I realised that there were a lot of things that they lacked,โ€ she said.

For the scholarship beneficiaries, the intervention represents more than just a seat in a classroom, offering a renewed path toward a future once washed away by the floods.

“Stop the Lies, Focus on Your Candidate” โ€”Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu’s Bold Advice to NPP Members

News Hub Creator1h

Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to focus their efforts on promoting their chosen candidate instead of spreading falsehoods about their rivals as reported by MyNewsGH.

He emphasized that the use of lies would not determine the outcome of the flagbearer race, warning that it would only deepen divisions within the party.

โ€œWhen you get the opportunity, sell your candidate. Tell the people what your candidate is capable of, and do not tell lies about people,โ€ Mensah-Bonsu stated.

His comments come in light of some misleading remarks attributed to him regarding the victims of the August 6 helicopter crash.

Mensah-Bonsu further urged party members to refrain from targeting others and instead concentrate on marketing their own chosen candidates.

โ€œIf you donโ€™t support the candidate I am supporting, you should not tell lies about me, market your candidate,โ€ he added.

The NPP has recently opened nominations for those seeking to contest the flagbearer position, with the party set to hold elections on January 31, 2025.

Party leadership believes the early primaries will help mitigate tensions within the ranks and contribute to the healing process after the partyโ€™s defeat in the 2024 elections.

Former Defence Minister Calls Helicopter Crash โ€œUnprecedented Lossโ€

Former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul

Dominic Nitiwul, Ghanaโ€™s former Defence Minister, voiced the nationโ€™s collective grief at a State House memorial, calling the August 6 helicopter crash that killed eight officials an irreplaceable tragedy.

โ€œIt could have been me,โ€ he reflected, recalling his eight years in the role. His words underscored the profound impact on a country mourning ministers, military officers, and public servants dedicated to fighting illegal mining.

Nitiwul urged unity amid sorrow: โ€œWe cannot ask whyโ€”only pray for their souls.โ€ He emphasized that prayers would โ€œfeed into their souls and ask God for forgiveness,โ€ transcending political divides.

The rare sight of NDC and NPP members mourning side by side, he noted, revealed Ghanaโ€™s shared humanity in crisis.

The victims including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Murtala Mohammed perished en route to an anti-galamseyย initiative in Obuasi.

Their deaths, Nitiwul stressed, should serve as a โ€œclarion call for togetherness,โ€ reminding citizens that national unity outweighs partisan loyalties.

Two Japanese boxers have died from brain injuries sustained in separate bouts on the same card at Tokyoโ€™s Korakuen Hall.

Shigetoshi Kotari, 28, collapsed shortly after completing a 12-round draw against Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation junior lightweight champion Yamato Hata on Aug. 2.

He underwent emergency brain surgery for a subdural hematoma โ€” a condition where blood collects between the brain and skull โ€“ but died on Friday.

โ€œRest in peace, Shigetoshi Kotari,โ€ the World Boxing Organization wrote on social media. โ€œThe boxing world mourns the tragic passing of Japanese fighter Shigetoshi Kotari, who succumbed to injuries sustained during his August 2nd title fight.

โ€œA warrior in the ring. A fighter in spirit. Gone too soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, team, and the entire Japanese boxing community.โ€

On Saturday, fellow 28-year-old Hiromasa Urakawa died after suffering the same injury during a knockout loss to Yoji Saito. He had undergone a craniotomy in an attempt to save his life.

โ€œThis heartbreaking news comes just days after the passing of Shigetoshi Kotari, who died from injuries suffered in his fight on the same card,โ€ the WBO said in another social media post on Saturday. โ€œWe extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and the Japanese boxing community during this incredibly difficult time.โ€

In response, the Japanese Boxing Commission has announced all OPBF title bouts will now be reduced from 12 rounds to 10.

Earlier this year, Irish boxer John Cooney died a week after being taken into intensive care following his Celtic super-featherweight title defeat to Nathan Howells in Belfast.

As part of the British Councilโ€™s Creative DNA programme, Ghanaian fashion brand Ometsey is set to showcase its design collections at Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) 2025, scheduled for August 9 โ€“ 10 at Space House, London.

Founded in 2017 by Darkwaa Edna, Ometsey is a contemporary womenswear label based in Ghana. Darkwaaโ€™s designs are known for their clean cuts, impeccable finishing, rare detailing, and a minimalistic twist.

This international showcase will feature a dedicated British Council catwalk presentation and an exhibition pavilion spotlighting some of Africaโ€™s most innovative emerging designers. The initiative will give these designers new international connections, access to fresh markets, and opportunities for cross-cultural learning, collaboration, and business growth.

Ometsey will be joined by nine other designers from Uganda, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Kenya, and Zimbabwe. All participants are either alumni or current members of the Creative DNA fashion accelerator programmeโ€”a flagship initiative of the British Councilโ€™s creative economy portfolio in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Since its launch in 2020, Creative DNA has supported over 200 fashion entrepreneurs across Kenya, Uganda, Senegal, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Malawi through mentorship, business development, and showcasing opportunities. The programme aims to strengthen creative enterprises, foster inclusion, and build international connections between Africa and the UK.

In addition to the runway and exhibition, the designers will join business clinics and panel discussions with UK fashion experts and facilitators from Westminster University and the Fashion Retail Academy. They will also take part in retail and manufacturing ecosystem tours across London, gaining direct insights into ethical production practices, global fashion standards, and the dynamics of the international retail market.

The cultural exchange component provides designers with a rare opportunity to explore the UKโ€™s fashion ecosystem, including supplier networks, sustainability models, and retail partnerships.

This yearโ€™s British Council Pavilion will also explore the future of fashion, showcasing innovations where fashion meets technology. The exhibition will feature the work of African designers and fashion weeks collaborating with AI labs and robotics engineers to experiment with tech-enabled storytelling and virtual reality runways using digital avatarsโ€”paving the way for cross-continental virtual fashion presentations.

Nii Doodo Dodoo, Country Director of British Council Ghana, emphasised:

โ€œFor Ghanaian designers navigating a growing but competitive fashion landscape, this kind of access is vital. Creative DNA is about turning creative potential into sustainable business, and opportunities like this help make that vision a reality.โ€

The engagement reflects the British Councilโ€™s commitment to placing creativity, cultural exchange, and enterprise at the centre of inclusive and sustainable growth across Africa and the UK.

Queen Ronke Ademiluyi-Ogunwusi, Founder of Africa Fashion Week London, added:

โ€œThis partnership with the British Council represents a bold step forward in our mission to elevate African fashion on the global stage. By showcasing these visionary designers in London, weโ€™re not only celebrating their talents but also forging deeper cross-cultural connections within the global fashion ecosystem.โ€

Visitors to AFWL 2025 are invited to explore the British Council Pavilion and attend the Creative DNA catwalk show on Saturday, August 9 at 4:00 PM.

Trump’s tariffs are sending African countries into China’s hands

0

US President, Donald Trump US President, Donald Trump

Africa is adjusting to the new reality of US President Donald Trumpโ€™s tariffs, with countries on the continent facing some of the highest export charges.

But what could become a crisis is an opportunity for United States rival China, which has long courted African countries and is now offering them a lifeline.

โ€œWe (Africa) are going straight into the hands of China,โ€ Nigerian economist Bismarck Rewane told CNN.

โ€œThat is the unfortunate outcome,โ€ Rewane said of Africaโ€™s expected further shift toward China, which has emerged in recent years as the continentโ€™s largest bilateral trading partner.

Four African nations – Libya, South Africa, Algeria and Tunisia – face some of the steepest tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, with charges on exports ranging from 25% to 30%.

Eighteen other countries from the continent were hit with 15% levies, a modified tariff package released Thursday by the White House showed.

In April, when the US import levies were first announced, Trump pitched them as โ€œreciprocalโ€ and targeting countries that he said had trade deficits with the US.

But Trump instead based his tariffs on countriesโ€™ trade deficits with the United States โ€“ not the tariffs they charge.

South Africa, one of the continentโ€™s powerhouses, challenged the imposition of a 30% tariff on its US-bound exports, saying Trumpโ€™s decision was not based on โ€œan accurate representation of available trade data.โ€

China has offered to soften the impact of US tariffs on Africa, saying in June it would halt charges on imports for nearly all its African partners.

โ€œThere is no other opportunity for African countries to strengthen South-South trade (among developing nations) than now,โ€ South African researcher Neo Letswalo told CNN, while urging countries to โ€œsolely turn to China and make it the next US.โ€

โ€œAmerica is gradually forfeiting its global leadership status,โ€ Letswalo said, adding that the more countries โ€œbecome less dependent on the US, the greater opportunity for China to become an alternative.โ€

Before the tariff deadline, the US did not make a trade deal with any African nation despite efforts from the continent to avoid the tariffs, underscoring Africaโ€™s place on the White Houseโ€™s priority list.

Letswalo described Americaโ€™s failure to negotiate a deal with Africa as โ€œan open goal for China.โ€

The impact of Trumpโ€™s tariffs is already being felt in some of Africaโ€™s most buoyant economies and some of the continentโ€™s poorest, such as Lesotho, which was slapped with a 15% tariff. It had previously been hit with a 50% tariff โ€“ one of the steepest rates โ€“ before the charges were modified.

Lesothoโ€™s Prime Minister Samuel Matekane said in June that the huge tariff, combined with the halt of US aid to the nation of just over 2 million people, โ€œhave crippled industries that previously sustained thousands of jobs.โ€

Trump has described Lesotho, a landlocked nation surrounded by South Africa, as a country โ€œnobody has ever heard ofโ€ โ€“ even though trade between the US and Lesotho totaled over $240 million last year, mostly in textiles.

Before the tariffs, Lesotho benefited from a US trade agreement that allowed it and other eligible sub-Saharan countries to export goods to the US duty-free.

Authorities in Lesotho have declared a two-year national state of disaster over the tariffs, as the country braces for their impact, with the textile industry already grappling with massive job losses.

‘Palestinian Pele’ Suleiman al-Obeid killed while seeking aid in Gaza

The football star leaves behind a wife and five children The football star leaves behind a wife and five children

Palestinian national football team player Suleiman al-Obeid has been killed in an Israeli attack on aid seekers in Gaza.

Al-Obeid, 41, was killed on Wednesday when Israeli forces attacked people waiting near an aid distribution centre in southern Gaza, the Palestinian Football Association said.

He was nicknamed the โ€œPele of Palestinian footballโ€ โ€“ after the Brazilian professional footballer widely regarded as one of the best football players of all time.

During his long career, the Gaza player scored more than 100 goals, making him one of the brightest stars of Palestinian football.

โ€œFormer national team player and star of the Khadamat al-Shati team, Suleiman Al-Obeid, was martyred after the [Israeli] occupation forces targeted those waiting for humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday,โ€ the Palestinian Football Association said in a statement.

With al-Obeidโ€™s death, the number of athletes and their family members killed in the Strip since the start of Israelโ€™s war has risen to 662.

The number of football-related deaths in Gaza now stands at 321, including players, coaches, administrators, referees and club board members.

The former football star began his career with the Khadamat al-Shati club in Gaza, before joining the ranks of the Al-Amari Youth Center Club in the occupied West Bank.

At the international level, al-Obeid played 24 international matches with Al-Fidaโ€™i, scoring two goals, the most famous of which was a scissor kick goal against the Yemeni national team during the 2010 West Asian Football Federation Championship.

The football star leaves behind a wife and five children.

More than 1,300 Palestinians have been killed near aid distribution sites run by the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation since it began operations in late May.

At least 18 people were killed while seeking aid on Wednesday, medical sources told Al Jazeera, amid a growing hunger crisis in the territory as Israel continues to impose severe restrictions on supplies of humanitarian aid.

Gazaโ€™s hospitals, meanwhile, have recorded four new deaths due to famine and malnutrition over the past 24 hours, according to the enclaveโ€™s Ministry of Health, raising the total number of hunger-related deaths to 197, including 96 children, since Israel launched its war on Gaza in October 2023. Most of the deaths have been in recent weeks.

Chad opposition leader, ex-PM sentenced to 20 years for inciting violence

Chadโ€™s former Succes Masra Chadโ€™s former Succes Masra

Chadโ€™s former prime minister and opposition leader Succes Masra has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for disseminating racist and xenophobic messages that incited violence.

Defence lawyer Kadjilembay Francis told reporters following Saturdayโ€™s ruling at a court in the Chadian capital, Nโ€™Djamena, that Masra would appeal his sentence.

โ€œHe has just been subjected to ignominy and unworthy humiliation,โ€ Francis said.

Masra, who was prime minister between January and May last year, is the head of the Transformers party and a sharp critic of Mahamat Deby, Chadโ€™s current president.

He was accused alongside 67 co-defendants, mostly from the same Ngambaye ethnic group, of causing a clash between herders and farmers in May in Logone Occidental, in the southwest of the central African country. The fighting left 35 people dead and six others injured.

Masra has denied the charges against him, which include hate speech, xenophobia and having incited a massacre.

Before leaving the courtroom on Saturday, he gave a message to his supporters: โ€œStand firm.โ€ Activists with his party said they would put out a โ€œspecial messageโ€ later in the day.

The Ngambaye ethnic group enjoys wide popularity among the predominantly Christian and animist populations of the south, whose members feel marginalised by the largely Muslim-dominated authorities in Nโ€™Djamena.

Masra left Chad after a bloody crackdown on his followers in 2022, only returning under an amnesty agreed in 2024.

He faced off against Deby in that yearโ€™s presidential election, which Deby won with more than 61 percent support.

But Masra did not accept the results, claiming that the vote was rigged. He later agreed to serve as premier after signing a reconciliation deal with Deby.

Masra has strongly opposed the military rulers who came to power in Chad in April 2021, after the death of Debyโ€™s father, Idriss Deby Itno, who had led the country for 30 years.

Deby took power in 2021 and legitimised his presidency with a parliamentary election earlier this year, which was opposed by Masra and his party

Let the legacy of helicopter crash victims mend a divided nation

0

Renowned lawyer and stalwart of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Tsatsu Tsikata, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of eight officials in the August 6 military helicopter crash.

Speaking at the Evening of Reflections and Memorial at the Forecourt of the State House on Saturday, August 9, Mr. Tsikata reflected on the profound impact of the tragedy on the victimsโ€™ families and the nation, expressing hope that their deaths would inspire unity and healing.

The memorial honoured the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, former parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East Samuel Aboagye, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and military crew members Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The victims were en route to Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Co-operative Mining and Skills Development Programme (COMSDEP), aimed at addressing illegal mining, when their aircraft went down in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, on Wednesday, August 6.

โ€œIt is a sad day indeed,โ€ Mr. Tsikata said. โ€œTheir loss has been in very tragic circumstances. The greatest pain will be felt by their families, their spouses, and their children.โ€

He urged that the victimsโ€™ dedication to public service should not be forgotten.

โ€œWe can only hope and pray that what they lived and died for will be a lesson for all of us,โ€ he advised.

Echoing President John Mahamaโ€™s earlier remarks, Mr. Tsikata called for the tragedy to serve as โ€œa lesson in the healing of the nation, and that is a legacy that they will leave behind,โ€ suggesting that their memory could help bridge divisions.

The memorial, attended by government officials, political figures, and the victimsโ€™ families, was both a tribute and a call for national reflectionโ€”reminding all that beyond their public roles, the loss was deeply personal for their loved ones.

Franklin Cudjoe blames Akufo-Addo govt for failure to address galamsey

0

President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has criticised the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration following the August 6 helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two cabinet ministers.

The victims โ€” Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and six others, including military personnel โ€” were travelling to Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Co-operative Mining and Skills Development Programme (COMSDEP), an initiative to address illegal mining, when their aircraft went down in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

Speaking on Channel One TVโ€™s The Big Issue on Saturday, August 10, Mr. Cudjoe expressed condolences to the bereaved families and the nation but blamed the former governmentโ€™s failure to curb illegal mining for the tragedy.

He added that if significant action had been taken against illegal mining over the past five to seven years, โ€œwe wouldnโ€™t be here.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s hard, itโ€™s really hard, itโ€™s painful, I will commiserate with the families and the rest of the country. Itโ€™s important that people do not remind us of the pain, especially some of the commentaries regarding this whole menace of galamsey.

โ€œItโ€™s quite interesting that we are making it look as though something should be shared politically. I think that if something significant had been done about it, probably in the last 5, 6 or 7 years, we wouldnโ€™t be here,โ€ he said.

He urged that the legacies of the victims be preserved.

Alhaji Muniru and Dr Murtala will be buried today, August 10.

Ghanaian dancehall star Stonebwoy has publicly disqualified and dismissed posts made by fellow musician Shatta Wale on social media in the aftermath of a recent helicopter crash that shocked the nation.

The incident involved a helicopter crash that drew widespread attention and concern from fans, celebrities, and the general public. In the tense moments following the tragedy, Shatta Wale shared a series of posts on his social media platforms that Stonebwoy has now rejected, labeling them as inappropriate or misleading.

While details of the specific posts have not been fully disclosed, Stonebwoyโ€™s reaction highlights tensions between the two artists, who have long been known for their rivalry in the Ghanaian music scene. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Tema Central, Charles Forson, has disclosed that a number of the partyโ€™s legislators contributed to pick the flagbearership nomination form of Kennedy Agyapong for the upcoming 2026 presidential primaries.

According to him, Ken Agyapong has a lot of support from members of the Majority Caucus of Parliament, who are determined that he will become the partyโ€™s presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections.

Charles Forson, who made these remarks during an interview on ChannelOne TV, on Tuesday, August 6, 2025, indicated that the MPs supporting Ken are also focused on ensuring that the party stays united after the primaries, and are acting in a manner that would not sow division.

โ€œWe went for the forms quietly, and we donโ€™t want to shake the base. We are more particular about postโ€“31st January โ€” how we are going to merge the forces together when he (Ken) becomes [flagbearer]. The support is there. You never saw any MP following him the last time. Now, the numbers are gargantuan, the former MPs are gargantuan. We have the numbers, but I tell them that let us keep things on the low.

โ€œWe just called a fraction of the number โ€” only 20 of the number โ€” to contribute GHยข5,000 for the forms and we didโ€ฆ we go for caucus meetings and the number is hugeโ€ฆ The contributions have now surpassed the GHยข100,000,โ€ he said.

The Tema Central legislator also stated that Ken is even surprised by the number of NPP MPs supporting his flagbearership bid because he did not enjoy the same support while he was in the House, as the representative for the Assin Central constituency.

โ€œIt amazes the man himself. While he himself was there [in Parliament], he didnโ€™t get that support,โ€ย heย noted.

Gorgeous Styles for Church and Special Occasions

0

When attending church or special events, it is important to dress in a way that shows respect and elegance. Fashion has changed over time, and now there are many beautiful and stylish options for women. These outfits help women feel confident, decent, and classy.

One popular style is the dress and coat combo. A knee-length or midi dress made from silk, satin, or lace looks great with a nice fitted coat. The dress can be in soft colors like navy, burgundy, or pastels. The coat adds warmth and style, making the whole outfit more polished.

Another lovely option is the peplum dress. This dress shape highlights the waist and gives a smart, modern look. Many peplum dresses have lace, beads, or ruffles, making them perfect for weddings or church services. You can pair this dress with a small clutch bag or bold earrings.

For those who like simple and covered styles, the maxi dress is a great choice. These long dresses often come with long sleeves and high necklines. Fabrics like cotton, chiffon, or silk make them comfortable and elegant. Adding a shawl or cardigan can complete the outfit beautifully.

Structured suits are also coming back in style. A suit with a pencil skirt gives a strong and professional look. These often come in bright colors like emerald green or blue and can be worn with hats or scarves.

Finally, accessories complete the look. Hats with flowers or beads are very trendy again. Simple jewelry like pearls, gold chains, or brooches add a classy touch.

In short, church and event fashion today is all about being elegant, modest, and stylish. Whether you wear a dress or suit, you can look your best and feel great.

Helicopter crash victims remembered at Evening of Reflections and Memorial

โ€˜It could have been meโ€™ โ€“ Former Defence Minister Nitiwul breaks down in tears

0

Former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul has expressed deep sorrow over the recent helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, calling it an unprecedented loss for Ghana.

Speaking at the Evening of Reflections and Memorial at the Forecourt of the State House on Saturday, August 9, Mr. Nitiwul described the immense grief the nation is facing and called for a moment of prayer for the victims.

Ghana Turns to Healing After Memorial for Military Helicopter Crash Victims

0

The Evening of Reflections and Memorial, held on Saturday, 9 August 2025, at the Forecourt of the State House, was not simply a ceremony of mourning; it was Ghana’s collective soul-searching.
This profound event has become the national stage for transforming shared grief into a powerful, renewed sense of purpose.

The loss of Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and six other brave souls in the military helicopter crash has become a catalyst for the nation to reaffirm its commitment to progress.
This analysis is a deeper dive into the emotional, political, and societal echoes of this impactful night, examining how a shared tragedy has been used to bridge political divides and inspire national resolve.

The Human Cost of Service and the Call for Justice

The tributes and interfaith prayers at the memorial painted a compelling portrait of the individuals lost. They were not just names on a casualty list; they were fathers, friends, dedicated public servants, and patriots who, as Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu movingly stated, โ€œpaid the supreme priceโ€ in service to their nation.

The personal anecdotes shared were particularly touching. Madam Laadi Ayii Ayamba, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Pusiga from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), offered a heartfelt tribute to her fellow NDC MP, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, recalling his humility and intellectual rigour. She remembered him as a โ€œtrue Muslim always quoting the Qurโ€™anโ€ and a debater who โ€œwould accept whenever he slipped,โ€ revealing a rare and admirable self-awareness.

The inclusion of victims such as former Obuasi East NDC Parliamentary Candidate Samuel Aboagye and NDC Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong alongside military personnel underscores the non-partisan nature of the sacrifice. This is a powerful testament that the tragedy transcends political allegiances.

It is crucial to remember the dedicated crew members who perished: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo-Mensah. Their service was a silent, essential part of the mission.

A family member of Sergeant Ernest Addo-Mensah, speaking to a local news outlet, tearfully said: โ€œHe was a good man, a family man. He gave his life for this country, and that is all that matters.โ€ This deep personal loss is felt across the country.

Ebo Dadson, a teacher in Accra, said: โ€œI donโ€™t know them personally, but their submissions on issues of national interest make me like them.โ€

Naa Amerley, a market trader, lamented: โ€œI thought it was a joke until I confirmed it. Itโ€™s a big loss to the nation.โ€ These voices represent a national mourning that is both personal and collective.

Adding a layer of complexity to the human tragedy is the urgent call from the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council for the return of any items from the crash site. The Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, appealed to residents of nearby communities to return any parts of the helicopter or personal belongings of the victims. The statement offers a cash reward for voluntary returns by Monday, 11 August, but warns that anyone found with such items after the deadline will be considered a criminal. This appeal highlights a deeply human and unsettling aspect of the disaster: the fine line between opportunism and the need for a thorough investigation to provide closure to the grieving nation.

A Nationโ€™s Unified Response

The official response was a study in national unity. While President Mahamaโ€™s speech was a masterclass in empathetic leadership, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) also offered a powerful message of solidarity. In a statement signed by its General Secretary, Justin Frimpong-Kodua, the NPP expressed โ€œprofound sadnessโ€ and described the deaths as a โ€œnational lossโ€โ€”a sentiment that echoed a rare bipartisan unity.

Ghanaโ€™s Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, delivered a poignant message directly to the bereaved families, assuring them of the nationโ€™s unwavering support. He stated: โ€œTo the wives, children, parents, relatives, former colleagues and close comrades of our fallen heroesโ€”know that you are not alone in this tragedy. We stand with you in flesh and in spirit.โ€

The Ghana Catholic Bishopsโ€™ Conference also issued a statement, noting their โ€œshock to lose such brilliant minds all at once.โ€ This cross-political and interfaith support highlights how the tragedy has temporarily suspended partisan rivalry.

The books of condolence opened at key institutionsโ€”from the Ministry of Defence to the Ghana Armed Forces Headquarters and even the NDC headquartersโ€”are not just a formality; they are a tangible expression of a nation united in shared sorrow.

The solemnity of the national mourning was further defined by prompt burials for two of the victims. In line with Islamic traditions, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed, the Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, were to be laid to rest on Sunday, 10 August, following Jannaza prayers at the Forecourt of the State House. This immediate action underscores the cultural and religious diversity of the nation and the governmentโ€™s commitment to respecting different traditions, even amid a national crisis.

A Call to Action from Grief

President John Mahamaโ€™s speech went beyond typical political rhetoric. He directly challenged the nation to โ€œturn the grief over the 6 August military helicopter tragedy into a renewed drive for national progress.โ€

This is a pragmatic, forward-looking message that acknowledges the pain of the present while steering the country towards a more hopeful future. The fact that the victims were on a mission to combat illegal mining (galamsey)โ€”a national crisis with significant environmental and economic implicationsโ€”provides a powerful, symbolic context to their sacrifice.

Their deaths should, as the President suggested, serve as a reminder of the โ€œsignificant work still needed to advance the nation.โ€ The call to action extends beyond mourning; it demands a national rededication to solving the very problems these leaders were trying to address.

A Legacy Forges a Stronger Nation

The solemnity of the Evening of Reflections and Memorial, which precedes a state funeral, is now giving way to a lasting legacy. The tragedy has placed a spotlight on the inherent risks faced by those in service to the state, from high-ranking ministers to the dedicated crew members.

This moment presents an opportunity for Ghana to not only mourn its fallen but also to reassess its national priorities and safety protocols.

As Ghanaians collectively grieve, they are also being asked to look inward, to find the strength to move forward. The ultimate testament to the lives of these eight brave souls will be how the nation responds to this challenge.

This tragedy is not just a political event; it is a test of the nationโ€™s resolve and a crucible from which a more unified, determined Ghana may yet emerge.

Disgraced hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs is hoping to make a comeback to music with a concert at Madison Square Garden, according to his lawyer.

Recently the rapper was denied bail ahead of his sentencing on October 3,2025, when he could face up to 20 years in prison after being convicted of prostitution-related offenses.

However, the sentence will likely be shorter than that, with prosecutors seeking 51 to 63 months and Combs’ defense team proposing 21 to 27 months.

Speaking to CBS News, Combs’ lawyer Marc Agnifilo said Combs told him “he’s going to be back at Madison Square Garden,” referring to the iconic arena in New York City.

In July, Combs was found guilty of two counts of transportation for prostitution but was cleared of more serious charges of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking, which carried potential life sentences.

As the co-founder of Bad Boy Records and the mentor who launched the career of the late Notorious BIG, Combs was a significant figure in pop culture for decades.

He’s also a Grammy-winning artiste and entrepreneur who built an empire spanning fashion and reality TV.

In addition to his criminal conviction, Combs is facing several civil lawsuits.

Recent reports suggest he’s been in contact with Donald Trump about a possible pardon, according to a source close to the rapper’s legal team, who spoke to NBC News.

The prophets who prophesied about ‘Black Wednesday’

Some of the prophets who 'foretold' the helicopter crash killed 8 people Some of the prophets who ‘foretold’ the helicopter crash killed 8 people

A horrific helicopter crash occurred in Ghana on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, which led to the death of eight people, including top government officials.

One of the issues that has emanated from the devastating crash, which has set the country in mourning, is the debate about prophecies.

Following the crash, several videos have emerged, which showed prophets foretelling that there was going to be a plane crash in Ghana, with some even giving timelines and mentioning some of the personalities who would be involved in the crash.

This has reignited debates about the prowess of prophets in the country. While a faction of the public argues that the accurate prediction of the incident means the country must take pastors seriously, others are questioning the revelations given by these ‘men of God’ and how they conduct themselves.

Here are the prophets who predicted a plane crash in Ghana and what they said:

Rev Isaac Owusu Bempah:

The founder and leader of Glorious Word Power Ministries International, Apostle Isaac Owusu Bempah, predicted that there would be some plane crashes in the country.

Owusu Bempah said that a number of powerful and prominent people were going to lose their lives in these crashes.

“If we don’t take care, there is going to be a number of plane crashes in this country. A number of prominent people are going to die; great people are going to die.

“If we are not careful, these crashes are going to happen this year,” he said at the 31st December Watch-Night Service on January 1, 2025.

Nigel Gaisie:

Prophet Nigel Gaisie, the founder of Prophetic Hill Chapel, also made a similar prophecy in July 2025.

He said that he saw a plane full of passengers crashing.

“I have seen a plane crashing, I have seen that a plane with passengers has crashed. What is today’s date?… 13th July. I have seen that a plane has crashed,” Nigel said.

Eric Boahen:

The founder of Reign House Chapel International, Prophet Eric Boah-Uche, prophesied that there would be a plane crash in the country.

He even predicted that the crash would happen in August 2025.

“A lot of things would happen in Augustโ€ฆ I saw vacant seats in Parliament, by-elections. This month, a plane is going to crash.

“Let us pray that God will divert these plane crashes from Ghana,” he said while speaking to his congregation.

Nana Kwame:

Prophet Nana Kwame of the Trinity Chapel also predicted that an aircraft was going to crash.

Speaking to his congregation before the incident, the prophet urged the public to pray fervently so that the crash would be averted.

He said that if the crash happened, it would be a big blow to the country.

“A plane is an aircraft, so is a helicopter. I saw an aircraft crashing. This is not good news. This is something that is going to lead to serious consequences. We have to pray against this thing because if we don’t pray, it is going to happen,โ€ he said.

Prophet Roja:

Prophet Samuel Henry, widely known as Prophet Roja, also predicted a plane crash in Ghana and even mentioned that the plane was going to travel from Accra to Kumasi.

Prophet Roja, in an interview on Angel FM, explained that in the vision, the plane crash would be severe, and fewer than 20 people would survive. Because of this, he called on Christians in Ghana to pray to avert the disaster.

Old video of Prophet Roja’s plane crash prophecy resurfaces after death of Omane Boamah, others

He also advised that, if possible, anyone who does not urgently need to travel by air on that date should postpone their trip.

“God is speaking to me right now, on the 29th of July, 2025. Please record this. Let all Christians in Ghana pray. This is a conditional prophecy. What I am seeing is that there is going to be a plane crash. I see a plane mid-air, and then it suddenly crashes. When it crashes, the number of survivors is up to 25. It is travelling from Accra to Kumasi,” he said in theย video.
