Ghana helicopter crash kills ministers of defence and environment

0

Ghana’s ministers of defence and environment have died in a military helicopter crash in the central Ashanti region, along with six other people, a government spokesperson says.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah told a press conference that Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment, Science and Technology Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed had been killed in the crash, which he described as a “national tragedy”.

Earlier, the Ghana Armed Forces said the aircraft, which was carrying three crew and five passengers had gone “off the radar”.

It had taken off from the capital, Accra, at 09:12 local time (and GMT) and was heading to the gold-mining town of Obuasi for a national event.

The authorities have not confirmed the cause of the crash.

The chief of staff has directed the country’s flags to fly at half-mast.

He extended condolences to “the servicemen who died in service to the country,” on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and the government.

Two times Shatta Wale has found himself in trouble with the law

Shatta Wale is a popular dancehall musician Shatta Wale is a popular dancehall musician

Ghanaian dancehall musician Shatta Wale is no stranger to controversy. From being jailed to ‘beefing’ with colleagues, pastors, entertainment journalists, businessmen, and policemen, the artiste has been involved in scandals of all sorts.

On the back of his most recent scandal, which involves the seizure of his Lamborghini vehicle by the EOCO, here are some instances where Shatta Wale has been trending for the wrong reasons, acts that landed him in ruthless encounters with the law.

1. Death Prophecy and Arrest over Fake Shooting (October 2021)

In mid‑October 2021, Shatta Wale found himself embroiled in legal controversy after claiming he had been shot on October 18 following a threatening prophecy.

A pastor dubbed Jesus Ahuofe had foretold on radio that the artist would be assassinated, which led Shatta Wale to stage a fake shooting incident to dramatise the warning and draw attention to it.

Authorities swiftly arrested the musician, accusing him and his associates of spreading false information likely to incite fear and disrupt public peace.

Shatta Wale and others were remanded to custody for a week before being granted bail of GH¢100,000.

At his court hearing on October 26, he pleaded guilty to publishing false news and was fined GH¢2,000 with a non‑custodial sentence, concluding the matter in court by late 2021.

Following his release, the musician defended his actions, calling the hoax a necessary move to expose the dangers of fake prophecies.

He explained that the stunt helped curb the influence of individuals promulgating false revelations that incited public fear and disrupted mental well‑being.

2. Lamborghini Seizure by EOCO (June–August 2025)

Nearly four years later, Shatta Wale was again at the centre of a high‑profile law‑enforcement action, this time involving an asset seizure.

In early June 2025, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) carried out a search of his Trassaco Valley Phase 1 residence in Accra under the Surveillance and Asset Recovery Unit (SARU).

The operation was initiated in collaboration with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the Department of Justice to reclaim assets tied to Ghanaian fraud convict Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is serving an 86‑month sentence in the U.S.

During the lawful operation, EOCO seized a 2019 Lamborghini Urus, which was found in Shatta Wale’s possession.

Although the artiste was not accused of wrongdoing, the seizure was carried out professionally and without incident.

Shatta Wale was permitted to surrender the vehicle voluntarily after expressing concerns about his public image if the seizure became widely publicised.

However, in August, Shatta Wale went on a barrage on social media, accusing EOCO boss Raymond Archer of leading armed officials to his house.

This prompted the EOCO to release an official statement clarifying the matter.

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama is emotionally distraught following the tragic deaths of key government officials in a helicopter crash.

Speaking to JoyNews at the Presidency, where the deaths were announced, Haruna Iddrisu said a team led by the Vice President has been constituted to officially inform the families of the Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed; and other officials who died in the crash.

“… A tragic departure of our colleagues in the service of our country. They were on their way to Obuasi to launch a cooperative mining initiative there. The President is deeply devastated emotionally. We pray that God will give him and the Ghanaian people the fortitude to accept this tragic loss. Her Excellency, the Vice President, Prof. Jane Naana, is now leading a government delegation to formally, albeit with difficulty, convey the sad passing of our colleagues Dr. Omane Boamah, Dr. Murtala Mohammed, Alhaji Muniru, and Comrade Sarpong.”

“So, the Vice President has constituted a team, one led by Julius Debrah and the National Chairman, to Koforidua, supported by the Army Commander. Other teams will visit the two other families, and a delegation will visit Takoradi tomorrow. Please accept our sympathies and condolences; this is a difficult moment for all of us.”

A little after midday on Wednesday, the Ghana Armed Forces issued a statement indicating that a helicopter headed for Obuasi had gone off radar, with efforts underway to locate the missing aircraft.

“A GAF helicopter, Z9, that took off this morning at 0912hrs from Accra and headed for Obuasi is currently off the radar. All efforts are being made to establish contact. On board were three crew members and five passengers. Further details will be communicated soon,” the statement said.

Prepare to lend below 10% – BoG Governor urges banks

Dr Johnson Asiama is the Governor of the Bank of Ghana play videoDr Johnson Asiama is the Governor of the Bank of Ghana

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, is urging financial institutions to prepare for a major shift in the banking sector as banks will soon be required to lend at rates below 10 percent.

According to him, it is time for local banks to move away from treasury bills and the central bank’s lending instruments, and instead provide a more secure foundation for private sector growth.

Ghana’s current lending rate hovers around 27.4%, making access to affordable credit a challenge for businesses and SMEs.

Meanwhile, the central bank is targeting a single-digit lending rate within the next four years.

Speaking at the Chartered Institute of Bankers (CIB) Ghana post-MPC roundtable discussion on August 5, 2025, Dr Asiama urged banks to refocus on credit expansion to productive sectors, particularly the private sector to stimulate economic growth.

“What are our banks going to do in the post-stabilisation phase? Are they prepared to lend at less than 10%? Are they ready to look beyond T-bills? Are they willing to move away from high-yield Bank of Ghana instruments? The era of high interest rates and passive investment by banks in government securities is ending. Banks must now begin to reimagine their business models, refocusing on intermediation, innovation, and credit expansion to productive sectors,” he stated.

Dr Asiama also emphasised the need to fully support key sectors of the economy, in line with the ongoing decline in inflation.

He noted that banks should prioritise and commit to green financing to support the government’s sustainability agenda.

“With inflation decelerating and rates on a downward path, there is a unique opportunity to support private sector growth, SMEs, agriculture, and above all, green financing,” he said.

“A stable macroeconomic environment is only meaningful if it translates into access to affordable credit, job creation, and inclusive economic transformation. The financial sector must be the bridge your industry must be the bridge, not the bottleneck.”

How Giovane Elber got sent off even after taping his mouth to avoid a second yellow

0

Giovane Elbar tapped his mouth during a game Giovane Elbar tapped his mouth during a game

In one of the Bundesliga’s most bizarre moments, Stuttgart striker Giovane Elber tried to stop himself from getting into more trouble by tapping his own mouth shut, but ended up being sent off anyway.

The incident occurred during a fiery clash between VfB Stuttgart and 1860 Munich in March 1997.

Elber, known for his sharp instincts in front of goal and equally sharp tongue, was shown a yellow card in the 26th minute after angrily swearing at the referee.

At half-time, the Brazilian forward took an unusual step to avoid a second booking, he wrapped red tape around his mouth and came out for the second half visibly silenced, determined not to let his words land him in more trouble.

But in the 78th minute, Elber’s efforts at self-control unraveled in a different way.

He caught an 1860 Munich player with a flying elbow, and the referee didn’t hesitate. Out came the second yellow, followed by a red. Mouth shut or not, Elber was off.

The incident became legendary just for its comic value.

Elber, who was in fine form that season, scoring 17 Bundesliga goals, later went on to play for Bayern Munich and win multiple league titles.

The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region while the two ministers, along with six others, were en route to Obuasi for official duties.

No Approved Transport Fare Increase – GPRTU’s Attitoe

0

By Michael Foli Jackidy

Ho (V/R), Aug. 6, GNA – Mr. Lawrence Awilo Attitoe, Vice Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in Ho, has dismissed reports of a 20 per cent transport fare increase as false and unauthorized.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr. Attitoe stated that no transport union, including the GPRTU, has approved any fare adjustment. He emphasized that the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) lacks the authority to unilaterally declare fare increases.

His remarks follow a GRTCC press release, signed by its General Secretary, Mr. Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah, and Acting Chairman, Alhaji Tanko, announcing a 20 per cent fare hike effective Friday, August 8.

“That directive should be disregarded. No driver union is implementing any fare increase,” Mr. Attitoe stressed.

He said GPRTU’s national office confirmed that no meeting had been held to consider or approve the proposed increase and insisted that decisions on fare adjustments are made collectively by driver unions—not the GRTCC.

“The GRTCC does not speak for us. We consult among ourselves and with the Minister for Transport before any adjustment,” he explained.

Mr. Attitoe added that the Automatic Adjustment Formula, which previously guided fare reviews, was abolished by the former government, making consensus and consultation essential.

He acknowledged the impact of the recent GH₵1.00 per litre fuel levy but urged patience, expressing hope that commodity prices would fall rather than prompting fare hikes.

He also warned that any union implementing the proposed hike would face legal consequences.

Meanwhile, the GRTCC has justified the fare increase, citing rising operational costs due to the new fuel levy, lack of price reductions in spare parts, and worsening road conditions that have escalated vehicle maintenance expenses.

“London is now the undisputed sporting capital of the world and the NBA coming to The O2 in January 2026 will further cement our global status.”

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, described the announcement as an “exciting opportunity,” while Manchester City Council leader Bev Craig highlighted the city’s growing status as a hub for major events.

BREAKING NEWS: GAF Helicopter Crashes at Adansi Sikaman, 8 Feared Dead

0

A Ghana Air Force helicopter carrying eight people, including top government officials, has gone missing after reportedly crashing near Adansi Sikaman in the Adansi North District of the Ashanti Region.

Eyewitnesses at the scene say the aircraft caught fire upon impact around mid-morning, sending thick plumes of smoke into the air and drawing dozens of residents to the site. “It just came down fast and burst into flames,” one resident recounted, and added, “We couldn’t get close because of the heat and smoke.”

Local reports indicate that the passengers were en route to Obuasi to attend a high-level government programme when the incident occurred. While the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, onlookers fear that all on board may have perished.

In a press release issued this afternoon, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) confirmed that the aircraft – a Z9 military helicopter – took off from Accra at 0912 hours heading for Obuasi, but went off radar shortly after. Efforts to re-establish contact have so far been unsuccessful.

According to the statement signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations for the GAF, three crew members and five passengers were on board at the time of the incident.

The military and emergency responders have since moved into the area, cordoning off parts of Adansi Sikaman as search, rescue, and recovery operations continue.

More details will be shared as they become available.

Shoprite to exit Ghana, Malawi

0

South African supermarket store Shoprite is selling its operations in Ghana and Malawi.

The move, announced by the retailer on Tuesday, is part of the chain’s efforts to focus on its home market. The planned sales follow the retailer’s exits from DR Congo, Kenya, Madagascar, Nigeria, and Uganda in the last few years.

The retrenchment follows years of expansion across the continent during which the grocery store became Africa’s top food retailer in around 15 countries. Shoprite changed course after encountering currency volatility, double-digit inflation, restrictive import regulations, and leases pegged to the US dollar — problems which were most pronounced in Angola and Nigeria.

Shoprite’s departure from other African markets contrasts with its expansion within South Africa. It has launched hundreds of new stores in its home market over the last year, scaled up its Sixty60 e-commerce delivery service, and diversified into pet supplies, health care, and outdoor gear.

Asante Kotoko hands over the iconic jersey number…to new forward Morifing Donzo

0

Asante Kotoko’s new forward, Morifing Donzo, has officially been handed the iconic number 9 shirt ahead of the upcoming season.

The 27-year-old Guinean striker, who joined the Porcupine Warriors on a three-year deal from Hafia FC, is expected to lead the club’s attacking line.

Donzo brings with him experience from the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup, and is seen as a major boost to Kotoko’s forward options.

Wearing the number 9 jersey, Donzo follows in the footsteps of some of Kotoko’s great strikers, and fans will be hoping he lives up to the expectations associated with the shirt.

Cameroonian forward George Mfegue was the last foreign player to wear the shirt, which he won the league before his departure in 2023.

WillisBeatz calls out Mr Drew over unpaid money, production credit

WillisBeatz (R) drags Mr Drew (L) over unpaid production fees WillisBeatz (R) drags Mr Drew (L) over unpaid production fees

Ghanaian sound engineer, William Osafo, popularly known as WillisBeatz, has called out singer Mr Drew for allegedly owing him money for a song they worked on together.

On August 5, 2025, WillisBeatz took to his X page to air his grievances, claiming that he has been trying to reach Mr Drew for the past four months without success.

According to him, all attempts to get the singer to settle the payment for production and splits have failed because Mr Drew has since ignored his calls.

In his post, WillisBeatz also accused Mr Drew of being dishonest about the production credits of his hit song “This Year.”

He alleged that the singer should give credit to music duo DopeNation, who, according to him, recorded the song.

This comes after DopeNation claimed in an interview with Headless YouTuber that they co-wrote the track and were involved in the recording process, but Mr Drew has not acknowledged their contribution.

“Chale adey call u.. u no dey pick my calls for the past 4 months. U owe me money for production n split and stop lying, DopeNation recorded ‘This Year’ song,” WillisBeatz wrote.

The singer responded to WillisBeatz’s post, denying any wrongdoing and insisting that WillisBeatz’s statement actually supports his own version of events.

According to Mr Drew, recording a song in someone’s studio does not mean that person wrote the song.

He accused DopeNation of making false claims and thanked WillisBeatz for what he described as “confirming the truth” in his favour.

From Mr Drew’s response, it suggests that he has now paid WillisBeatz, and therefore, there should be no further issues.

“Which lie? You just confirmed my truth lol. They said they wrote the song. If I come record song for your there mean say you write the song? So as I just sort you your money what again you get talk?” Mr Drew wrote.

The development, which caused power outages across the area, prompted an urgent working visit The development, which caused power outages across the area, prompted an urgent working visit

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has announced the full restoration of electricity supply to Tamale and surrounding communities, following a temporary service withdrawal by staff of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) and the Volta River Authority (VRA).

The development, which caused power outages across the area, prompted an urgent working visit by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor (MP), who held a series of high-level engagements with stakeholders to resolve the impasse.

During his visit, John Jinapor met with the Northern Regional Minister, the Mayor of Tamale, the management of NEDCo, leadership of the Senior Staff Association and Workers’ Unions of NEDCo and VRA, as well as regional heads of the Ghana Police Service and National Security.

The Minister also paid courtesy calls on the Gukpenaa, Kuga Naa, and Gbewaa Palaces, where he listened to the concerns of traditional authorities. He extended the Ministry’s appreciation to the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, for his warm reception and leadership.

“The Ministry extends its gratitude to the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Mahama

Abukari Gariba II, for his gracious reception and insights during the visit.

“As a direct result of the Ministry’s proactive engagement, power has been fully

restored to the affected areas. The staff of NEDCo and VRA have rescinded their

decision to suspend services. The security services remain vigilant to ensure the safety and security of all,” the statement noted.

Following the intervention, staff of NEDCo and VRA have rescinded their decision to withdraw services and returned to work. The Ministry noted that security personnel remain deployed in the area to ensure the safety of utility workers and installations.

The statement signed by Energy Ministry spokesperson Richmond Rockson urged the public to avoid any acts of aggression toward utility staff.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to continuous stakeholder engagement, stressing that proactive dialogue is key to preventing future disruptions.

NPP MP Vincent Assafuah kicks against Kurt Okraku’s third term bid

Vincent Assafuah is a Member of Parliament for Old Tafo Constituency Vincent Assafuah is a Member of Parliament for Old Tafo Constituency

Member of the Parliament Select Committee on Sports and Recreation, Vincent Ekow Assafuah has said that he won’t support Ghana Football Association (GFA) president, Kurt Okraku to seek another term in office.

He will be seeking a third term pending a Congress decision after the proposal for an extended term limit was approved by FIFA.

Reacting to this new development in Ghana football, the Member of Parliament for the Old Tafo Constituency in the Ashanti Region said Kurt Okraku should be stopped from seeking a third term bid in order to preserve institutional integrity.

“The statutes exist to protect the Association from excessive concentration of power and to preserve institutional integrity.

“To disregard this provision, or seek its amendment to favour the ambitions of any individual, would contradict the foundational principles upon which the restructured GFA was built,” he said as quoted by Joy Sports.

He added that Ghana football currently needs a leader who brings transformation and not the one who is chasing personal ambitions.

“The laws that brought Mr Okraku to power cannot be ignored simply because they now stand in the way of his ambition.

“What Ghanaian football needs now is a leadership transition grounded in merit, fairness, and respect for its own legal frameworks — not one manufactured through manipulation or quiet constitutional change,” he said.

The proposal for Kurt Okraku’s third term bid as GFA president will either be accepted or voted against at the upcoming Ordinary Congress on August 12, 2025.

Ghanaian star Shatta Wale’s luxury car surrendered over alleged link to US crime

0

Shatta Wale is one of Ghana's best-known stars Shatta Wale is one of Ghana’s best-known stars

Ghanaian authorities have taken possession of a luxury car allegedly linked to proceeds of crime from popular musician Charles Nii Armah, better known as Shatta Wale, following a request from the US.

The 2019 Lamborghini Urus is allegedly tied to the criminal enterprise of Ghanaian Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is serving a seven-year jail term in the US for fraud.

Wale denies knowledge or connection with the jailed Ghanaian, saying he is a “third-party owner” of the car. “I don’t know who shipped [it] to the country,” he said.

Shatta Wale is one of Ghana’s best-known stars and collaborated with Beyoncé on the song Already which featured on her 2019 Lion King album.

Wale took to social media to criticise the authorities over the recovery of the bright yellow Lamborghini, questioning why officers stormed his home with guns.

“Bringing guns to my house was uncalled for,” the dancehall artist wrote on his social media page, accusing the agency’s chief executive of humiliating him.

Wale said he had bought the car for $150,000 ($113,000) and that he had presented supporting documents to the officers.

The Lamborghini is expected to be returned to the US “as part of [Amuah’s] $4.7m restitution”, Eoco said, adding that the FBI and the US Justice Department intended to formally ask for mutual legal assistance for its return.

The agency said the car had been retrieved in a civil manner without any incident.

“It is a standard safety protocol for officers of the surveillance and asset recovery unit to carry weapons whilst on operation for their safety,” Eoco said in a statement.

Wale was later allowed to personally surrender the car, which is now in Eoco’s custody.

US court records indicate that Amuah and his co-conspirators had impersonated vendors to defraud nearly 70 public and private organisations across the country.

They tricked entities into wiring money into bank accounts controlled by the group through shell companies.

In 2023, Amuah was sentenced to 86 months in prison and the car was reportedly one of the items flagged as part of restitution to victims.

Timeless Ankara Kaba and Slit Styles Every Lady Should Own

0

The Ankara kaba and slit is a cherished traditional outfit that continues to evolve with modern fashion influences. Known for its vibrant colors, bold patterns, and cultural richness, this style remains a go-to option for many African women, especially for church services, weddings, and special events.

Traditionally, the kaba is a loose-fitting blouse paired with a long, often fitted slit skirt. However, today’s designers are putting a contemporary spin on the classic look. Off-shoulder, peplum, bell sleeves, and even crop top versions of the kaba have become increasingly popular. These updates give the outfit a more stylish and youthful appearance while still maintaining its cultural significance.

For the slit, modern women now prefer high-slit cuts, pencil styles, or flared designs that allow for comfort and easy movement. Some even opt for front or side slits that add a bit of elegance and flair to their overall look. When stitched to perfection, the kaba and slit can flatter all body types, enhancing a woman’s natural shape without compromising modesty.

Accessorizing the kaba and slit is also key to completing the outfit. Pair it with a matching Ankara headwrap (duku), bold jewelry, and a stylish handbag. For footwear, heels or beaded sandals can complement the look depending on the occasion.

What makes the Ankara kaba and slit stand out is its versatility. It can be worn to church, funerals, naming ceremonies, traditional engagements, or even fashion events. It’s a style that reflects pride in heritage, elegance, and a love for fashion all in one.

Every lady should have at least one well-tailored Ankara kaba and slit in her wardrobe—because it’s not just an outfit, it’s a cultural statement.

Fiifi Boafo Calls For Holistic Education

Fiifi Boafo

Fiifi Boafo, a former Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), has stressed the need for holistic education of Ghanaian children.

He said the education of the Ghanaian child should not only focus on the passing of examinations, but one that awakens curiosity, foster resilience, and promote values that bind the people as a society.

He also called for an investment in educational institutions to help create an ecosystem that nurtures talent and encourages young minds to dream big.

This, he said, would also create opportunities for children to explore, particularly in co-curricular and practical activities.

Fiifi Boafo said this at the fifth graduation and prize giving day of Starhill International School in Tarkwa, Western Region.

Mr. Boafo, a resident of Tarkwa, noted that the area could boast of vibrant businesses and substantial purchasing power, making it an ideal place for cultivating a future generation poised for success.

He stated that children deserve spaces where they can learn not only academics but also essential life skills, empathy for one another, and the importance of giving back to the community.

“They must be able to grasp the significance of being responsible citizens, and schools like Starhill International, are key in providing such education,” he pointed out.

According to him, for the past five years, he has witnessed the school’s dedication to excellence, including its academic achievements, the all-around development of each child, and the encouragement of creativity and critical thinking among the students.

“These attributes are invaluable in equipping the children for the realities of the world they will traverse,” he added.

Mr. Boafo also encouraged the administration, teachers, and parents of Starhill to continue striving for excellence. He indicated that, their unwavering commitment to the development of the children will address the challenges of tomorrow.

The Director of the School, Nana Kwame Yeboah, called for the support of stakeholders in making Starhill the very best in Takrwa and the country as a whole.

Mr. Yeboah indicated that, he will continue to strive to help the school achieve its set objectives, as he has demonstrated over the past years.

Govt inaugurates IMC to revive Komenda Sugar Factory

0

The Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has inaugurated a committee to lead the operationalisation of the Komenda Sugar Factory.

The factory, constructed more than 10 years ago, has remained dormant for the better part of its life.

The interim management committee (IMC), chaired by Kwame Owusu Sekyere, a lawyer, also has Douglas Mensah, an engineer; John Doku, Lt Col George Afful (retd), and Ransford Vanni Amoah as members.

The six-point Terms of Reference given to the IMC comprise conducting a technical assessment of the factory’s assets, reviewing its financial and business viability, evaluating the sugarcane raw material supply chain, identifying a credible strategic partner, reviewing the ministry’s operational roadmap, and proposing a transition plan towards full operations.

The committee is expected to submit its preliminary findings and recommendations to the ministry within eight weeks.

The inauguration, held in Accra last Monday, marks a renewed national effort to restore the factory to full functionality and economic relevance.

Government officials said it signalled a renewed determination to breathe life into one of Ghana’s key industrial initiatives and transform it into a sustainable source of employment and import substitution.

Inauguration, history

Inaugurating the committee, Mrs Ofosu-Adjare emphasised the significance of the factory as a “prized national asset” initiated under the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

She said it had been left to deteriorate due to a host of operational and supply chain challenges.

The factory dates back to 2013, when the government at the time contracted Seftech India Pvt to construct a sulphurless sugar plant on a turnkey basis.

Designed to produce 125 tonnes of sugar daily, with plans to expand into ethanol production and power generation, the project initially cost $36.25 million, funded through a loan from India EXIM Bank and a grant from EDAIF, now Ghana EXIM Bank.

Mrs Ofosu-Adjare said in spite of subsequent efforts, including the engagement of Park Agrotech as a strategic investor in 2020 and the involvement of West Africa Agro-Tech Company Limited (WAATCO) under the 1D1F initiative, the factory had not been able to achieve sustainable operations.

“In spite of these interventions, several attempts to operationalise the factory have not been successful,” the minister said.

To break this cycle, she said the government had constituted the high-level IMC to diagnose and address the root issues hindering the factory’s viability.

National significance

Mrs Ofosu-Adjare underscored the broader national significance of the project.

“The Komenda Sugar Factory holds the potential to create enormous jobs in the catchment area, and cutting down on the volume of sugar imports into the country,” she said.

She added that the ministry was committed to supporting the IMC with the resources required to fulfil its mandate effectively.

The chairman of the IMC expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry for entrusting the committee with the task of reviewing and reviving the factory.

“We are honoured by the confidence reposed in us and pledge to diligently work on the terms of reference and deliver within the timelines assigned to us,” Mr Owusu Sekyere said.

Background

The Komenda Sugar Factory was originally established in 1964 by Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, but later collapsed.

The government secured a $35-million Export-Import (EXIM) Bank, India loan to re-establish the factory.

An additional $24 million facility was set aside to support out-grower farmers.

The factory was commissioned on May 30, 2016, by President John Dramani Mahama to produce sugar, but it became stillborn due to a multiplicity of factors that were described as “technical and operational challenges”.

The factory, which was expected to employ 7,300 people along the value chain in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem municipality, has not been operational since then.

While addressing a durbar of the chiefs and the people of Komenda in the Central Region on September 14, 2018, then President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, gave an assurance that the government was in the process of getting a strategic investor to revive the factory.

On April 5, 2019, a former Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen, also assured Parliament that a strategic investor would be named by the end of that month to acquire the assets of the factory and help to operationalise it.

Following mounting pressure from the chiefs, youth groups and the people of Komenda for the revival of the factory, the government announced on November 26, 2019, that Park Agrotech Ghana Limited, a Ghanaian-Indian company, had been selected as the strategic investor to revamp the factory.

It was explained that Park Agrotech emerged as the successful bidder after a rigorous selection process conducted by the accounting and advisory firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

The Ghana-based company, a subsidiary of the Skylark Group of Companies of India, one of the largest integrated farming businesses in India, was expected to inject $28 million into the factory between 2020 and 2023.

The company was expected to invest $11 million of the amount into sugarcane cultivation, $6 million to upgrade plant and machinery and $11 million as working capital to bring the ailing factory back on its feet.

The STM Project Limited, a company renowned for sugarcane development and sugar plant modernisation, expansion and rehabilitation for more than 200 sugar factories in India and other parts of the world, was supposed to serve as the technical partner, with technical support from the University of Cape Coast.

However, when the Daily Graphic followed up on the progress of work in March 2020, it emerged that no contract was signed between the government and the company.

Dagbon Chiefs Condemn Demolition of McDan Property, Call for Presidential Investigation

The Chiefs of Dagbon, under the authority of His Royal Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari II, convened this morning to express deep concern over the recent demolition of property belonging to prominent entrepreneur and philanthropist, Dr. Daniel McKorley, popularly known as McDan, near the Kotoka International Airport in Accra.

Addressing the media on behalf of the gathered chiefs, a senior traditional leader emphasized the gravity of the incident, describing it as a matter of national concern. He called on all well-meaning Ghanaians to reflect on the implications of such actions, especially when directed at individuals who have dedicated themselves to national development.

“Yaa Naa has expressed a very serious concern on behalf of himself and on behalf of the chiefs gathered here, and to let all and sundry in the country come to appreciate the dangers, come to appreciate what has happened to his(McDan) property as juxtapose to who his personal self is.”

Dr. McKorley, a revered son of the Dagbon kingdom, was praised for his unwavering support of the chieftaincy institution and his commitment to national unity. The chiefs highlighted his continued loyalty to Dagbon and described him as a man who has repeatedly entrusted his efforts and legacy to the people of the North.

“Many a time, he has demonstrated his togetherness with Dagbon and the people of Dagbon. Repeating severally that the kind of confidence he has put in Dagbon is out of his inner belief that he giving himself up to the people and the chiefs of Dagbon, he can drive a meaningful development agenda for the people of the area, that of his area, and the people of the entire country.”

The incident, which occurred just a week ago, left traditional authorities stunned. The chiefs expressed concern over the manner in which the demolition was carried out and described it as a blow to private sector motivation and national unity.

“To approach any problem that he has in the country in this Rambo-style is very regrettable.”

Calling on President John Dramani Mahama, the chiefs urged the establishment of a committee to investigate the demolition, identify those responsible, and ensure appropriate compensation for Dr. McKorley.

“Treating him this way will certainly discourage people in the country to go into a private sector, to do work, to approach the people, to unify the people and to struggle for the betterment of the country.”

They concluded by affirming that McDan is not just a businessman but a symbol of national unity and development — someone who should be celebrated, not discouraged.

Bednarek hits out at Lyles …for shoving at US trials

0

American sprinter, Kenny Bednarek, has branded compatriot, Noah Lyles, as “unsportsmanlike” after he latter beat him to gold in the 200m event at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The duo were racing in the 200m event at the annual championships in Oregon with Lyles pipping his Team USA teammate to gold with a time of 19.63s and were involved in a scuffle as they crossed the finish line, with Bednarek pushing Lyles and the pair exchanging words.

“I tell you, if you’ve got a problem, I expect a call,” Bednarek said in the post-race interview. “You know what, you’re right. You’re right. Let’s talk after this,” replied Lyles.

Speaking individually later on, Bednarek said: “Like I’ve said before, Noah’s going to be Noah. If he wants to stare me down, that’s fine.

“The summary is, don’t do that to me,” he said. “I don’t do any of that stuff. It’s not good character right there. That’s pretty much it. At the end of the day, he won the race. I’ve got to give him props. He was the better man today.

“What he said didn’t matter, it’s just what he did,” Bednarek said. “Unsportsmanlike expletive, and I don’t deal with that. It’s a respect factor. He’s fresh. Last time we lined it up, I beat him, that’s all I can say. Next time we line up, I’m going to win. That’s all that matters,” he added.

“On coach’s orders, no comment,” said Lyles when asked about the incident.

The result means that the pair face a rematch at the World Championships in Tokyo on 19 September, with Lyles a three-time defending world champion in his favourite event and the defending champion in the 100m too.

And Bednrek said that the pair will “go fresh and we’ll see what happens” in Japan. “I’m very confident I can beat him. That’s all I can say,” he added.-independent

Five takeaways from Shatta Wale’s TikTok live

Shatta Wale is a dancehall musician Shatta Wale is a dancehall musician

Dancehall musician Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, sparked reactions after disclosing some information happening between his camp and that of the EOCO.

Shatta Wale, in an earlier Facebook post that day, claimed that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), led by its boss, Raymond Archer, had raided his house with guns in June 2025.

Following that, EOCO, during a press statement, detailed what led to their raid, adding that its office, together with the FBI and the Justice Department, has tied the 2019 Lamborghini Urus to Nana Kwabena Amuah, a fraud kingpin currently serving an 86-month sentence in the US.

The dancehall musician also took to TikTok, claiming he has no involvement in the fraud scheme, while mentioning names such as Kwabena Adu-Boahene and Nana Kwabena Amuah.

With that being said, here are five takeaways from Shatta Wale’s TikTok live:

Details about the seized Lamborghini Urus:

The dancehall musician during the live TikTok session claimed that he bought the said vehicle for an amount of $150,000.

According to Shatta Wale, the former National Signals Bureau (NSB) boss, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, sold the car to him.

“I bought the Lamborghini for $150,000 and didn’t know it was from Adu-Boahene. I’m leaving the car for you people. Don’t come to my house, and let nobody invite me,” Shatta Wale said.

Claims by Raymond Archer that the Lamborghini is a stolen car:

He further disclosed that during a meeting with EOCO’s Acting Executive Director, Raymond Archer, he was told the car had a bad history in the US.

“Raymond Archer told me in his office that someone was shot in the Lamborghini in the US, and that’s what scared me.

“Raymond Archer told me Adu-Boahene is going down, and if I want to go down with him, I should let him know,” Shatta Wale alleged.

Shatta Wale claims the Lamborghini is not a stolen vehicle:

Shatta Wale also, during an X Space, noted that after research on the car, it had no violent history as claimed by Raymond Archer.

“The car is in Ghana. If you go and check the car’s number for CarFax, you will see that it isn’t a stolen car. The Kwabena Amuah guy bought it from a dealership. Maybe because he is associated with fraud,” he said.

No connection with Nana Kwabena Amuah:

Shatta Wale also denied having any connection with Nana Kwabena Amuah, the man currently in US prison over a fraud scheme, of which the Lamborghini is linked with.

“I don’t know anybody called Nana Kwabena Amuah. I did not get any vehicle from that so-called Nana Kwabena Amuah. I am a third party to that Lamborghini car… I did not get the vehicle from the so-called Nana Amuah. He didn’t sell the car to me, so he didn’t give me the car.”

Shatta Wale claims EOCO treated him as criminal:

The “On God” singer added that he was treated unfairly when the EOCO visited his premises.

According to Shatta Wale, 13 officers armed to the teeth entered his house.

“You came to my house because of Adu-Boahene, but right you changed the whole matter, making it look like I bought the car from some Nana Amuah. The team that came to my house didn’t tell me about any Nana Amuah.

“Raymond Archer told me in his office that someone was shot in the car. That is what scared me. What violence is in Trasacco? But they came glocking guns in front of my gate like I am some criminal they have been looking for, for 30 years,” he added

Employers of student loan defaulters to be prosecuted

0

A photo of police officers arresting an individual A photo of police officers arresting an individual

The Student Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) has disclosed that it will begin prosecuting employers who hire individuals who have defaulted on their student loans.

The institution indicated that these measures are part of its recovery efforts to reclaim amounts owed by loan defaulters.

According to Enoch Asumadu Koranteng, Manager in charge of Enforcement, speaking on GH One on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, employers are mandated by the Student Loan Trust Fund Act to deduct loan repayments from the salaries of employees who are student loan beneficiaries and remit them to the Fund.

He stated that employers who fail to act accordingly would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

“The Student Loan Trust Fund is set up by an Act of Parliament and Section 24 of the Act is saying that if you are an employer who employs beneficiaries of student loan, at the end of the month you need to deduct and remit the student loan repayment to us at the Fund. This is a statutory obligation so, if you are an employer and you fail to do these deductions and remittances, then the law says that we should prosecute you,” he said.

Asumadu Koranteng, explaining how the Fund is able to track defaulters and the institutions where they are employed, said that their database can identify all beneficiaries and their places of employment.

“Student Loan is a data controlling institution and so from our database, we are able to detect that an individual is working with this institution. I mean, based on our database, we are able to determine where you are.”

He continued, saying that through their database, the Fund writes to employers, directing them to deduct loan repayments from the salaries of defaulters.

He added that if employers fail to respond, the next steps include issuing warning letters, followed by possible prosecution as a final measure.

“When we get to know, we write to you demanding the repayment of the loan. We continue with a warning letter if you fail to respond to the demand earlier and the next step is the prosecution.

“By the time we get to the prosecution, it means we have done the first, demand notice, the second, which is the warning, and then the third, the prosecution. So, in accordance with the law, we prosecute employers who fail to deduct,” he continued.

He added: “In section 24, it places a statutory obligation on the employer, saying that at the commencement of employment, you inquire from the employee if they took student loan when they were in school. At section 27 of the Act, it places an obligation on this employee that when you get a job, inform your employer that you took student loan.

“So, there is an inquiry and there is a confirmation coming from the employer and the employee. So, by that, employers will get to know that yes, there’s a need to satisfy that obligation at section 24.”

‘Third term brought Kwesi Nyantakyi’s downfall’ – Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe warns GFA

Dr Nyaho-Nyaho Tamakloe is a former chairman of the Ghana Football Association Dr Nyaho-Nyaho Tamakloe is a former chairman of the Ghana Football Association

Veteran football administrator, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe, has cautioned the current Ghana Football Association administration to be wary of amending the constitution for a third term limit.

FIFA recently approved the GFA’s proposal to extend the presidential term to three terms, aligning with FIFA and CAF regulations.

Reports indicate that Okraku is likely to run again for a third term during the GFA Congress.

In response to this, Dr Tamakloe advised the association to take a cue from former GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi’s tenure in office, where he was embroiled in a corruption case after amending the constitution to run for a third term.

The former GFA chairman cautioned the Kurt Okraku-led administration to be wary of the statutes amendment, as it could have dire consequences in the future.

“I warn that history has repeated itself in several instances in this country, and we don’t seem to take note of that. If we are not careful, this can create a big problem, because, citing the downfall of the former GFA boss, Kwesi Nyantakyi, my very good friend, I attribute it to this particular thing he himself wanted to do, which would have an impact on his downfall,” he said.

The veteran football administrator asserted that anyone intending to amend the constitution to prolong their stay in power is a threat to society.

“Now, to me, anyone who wants to stay in power perpetually, especially by twisting the constitution to suit their interests, is a danger to the organization and society,” he added.

Sanitation Day Observed To Mark National Youth Month

Osman Ayariga and Opare-Addo at the clean-up exercise

ALL 261 districts in the country on Saturday, August 2, observed the nationwide Sanitation Day to commemorate the National Youth Festival Celebration, which began on August 1 under the theme, “Ignite Potential Inspiring Change”.

At the Ledzokuku Municipality, volunteers for the clean-up exercise swept the roadside areas, weeded the bushes in between the roads, and desilted choked gutters to make way for the free-flow of waste water to prevent spillage and flooding.

Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare-Addo, following his assumption of office, has prioritised youth involvement in sanitation exercises, thereby necessitating its inclusion in the month-long festival to create awareness.

He emphasised that community-led sanitation initiatives foster a sense of ownership and responsibility among the youth, which helps reduce pollution, protect water sources, and preserve natural habitats.

“Regular clean-up exercises can help reduce waste disposal costs and improve waste management infrastructure, as clean environments contribute to a better quality of life, enhancing the well-being of citizens. These benefits can have a positive impact on the country’s overall development and well-being,” he mentioned.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Osman Ayariga, emphasised the importance of communal sanitation and encouraged young people to take ownership of their environment, stressing that it is their responsibility to keep their surroundings clean, regardless of the presence of waste management companies like Zoomlion.

The NYA CEO added that the authority has a packed schedule for the month, with upcoming events including a religious engagement with the Christian Fellowship at the Empowerment Chapel, a youth conference in Kumasi, a nationwide walk against substance abuse on August 29, and a street carnival on August 30.

The National Youth Festival is an initiative by the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment and the National Youth Authority.

By Michael Foli Jackidy

Ho (V/R), Aug. 5, GNA – The Volta Regional Directorate of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has successfully resolved 1,348 out of 1,353 complaints lodged against the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in the first half of 2025, achieving a 99.63 per cent resolution rate.

A press release signed by Mr. Philip Agbezudor, Volta and Oti Regional Manager of PURC, indicated that ECG accounted for 1,180 complaints—87.21 per cent of the total—with 1,175 resolved, reflecting a 99.60 per cent resolution rate. GWL received 173 complaints, all of which were fully addressed.

The Commission noted that 97.26 per cent of complaints were related to quality-of-service issues, including frequent power outages, voltage fluctuations, phase-offs, low water pressure, discoloured water, leakages, and pipe bursts. Billing-related issues comprised 1.63 per cent of complaints, covering high bills, overbilling, estimated charges, bulk billing, and discrepancies on the ECG PowerApp.

Complaints were received through various channels, including field visits, written submissions, phone-ins, walk-ins, and digital platforms. Notably, nearly 92 per cent of complaints were submitted via WhatsApp and email, highlighting the growing use of technology in public engagement.

A five-year trend analysis showed that the 2025 mid-year figure represents the highest number of complaints received since 2021. The increase is attributed to persistent service challenges and intensified public education campaigns by the Commission across the Volta and Oti regions.

As part of its outreach, PURC continued to educate communities on preventing bushfires that damage electricity poles—particularly in areas impacted by nomadic herdsmen. Community engagements were held in Fodome, Jasikan, Hohoe, Gbledi, Adaklu, Mafi, Kpando, Dzolokpuita, and parts of the Ho Municipality.

The 2025 Mid-Year Report reaffirms PURC’s commitment to regulatory effectiveness, consumer protection, and enhanced utility service delivery in the Volta and Oti regions.

Commercial Drivers Express Frustration –

0

The recent 15% reduction in transport fares after a drop in fuel prices and the appreciation of the cedi was expected to ease the financial burden on Ghanaians. This reduction took effect from May 24, 2025 and applied to shared taxis, intra-city transport (‘trotro’), intercity transport (long distance) and haulage. However, many commercial drivers in Accra have expressed frustration about how the reduction has reduced their daily income.

Atta, a trotro driver on the Osu to Abokobi road, said the government’s call to reduce fares has negatively impacted their earnings.

“There is even the introduction of the D-Levy, where we’re taxed for one cedi on every litre of fuel we purchase, also prices of spare parts haven’t been reduced. The fare reduction just made things worse,” he said in an angry tone. “The road to Abokobi is also bad. We spend more money maintaining our cars than before.”

According to Atta, the supposed fuel price relief the government promised has not been implemented to support drivers, as other operational costs remain high. “Our income level has fallen drastically,” he added.

Moro, a trotro mate, who has worked for 12 years, shared a similar view. “After paying for fuel, sales, and ticket, there’s nothing left. My wife doesn’t even believe me when I tell her how little I earn.”

Another driver said he could make ends meet under the previous government, but not anymore.

These drivers threatened that they might mobilise for a nationwide strike if the government doesn’t take measures to support them.

Mr. Kwaku Gyan, Secretary of Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) Branch 2 at Osu, confirmed that many drivers were unhappy with the fare reduction directive.

While the Ashanti Regional Chairman of GPRTU, Alhaji Sumaila Boakye, in an interview on May 24, 2025 urged spare parts dealers and service providers to also reduce the cost of their goods and services – following GPRTU’s decision to reduce transport fares – there has not been any confirmed nationwide response to this call.

Although some vendors in Abossey Okai claimed they have reduced prices of spare parts slightly due to the cedi’s appreciation and easing imports costs, many drivers say they have not noticed any significant difference in the prices.

This lack of coordinated price drop has prompted commercial drivers to call on the government to intervene with policies that touch on vehicle maintenance costs, road conditions, and fair fare pricing.

As fuel prices rise again, drivers are not smiling at vehicle stations at all. For many of them, the government’s promise of economic fairness feels distant.

Now, the question is: who is really benefiting from Ghana’s public transport policies – the passengers, drivers, the spare parts dealers, GPRTU, or the government?

Gospel singer Selina Boateng has stated that undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) goes against the will of God, and she would never consider doing it.

In an interview with Bryt TV, the singer explained that some people have suggested she should change her body because of her size. However, she said she does not pay attention to such comments. According to Selina, her focus is on exercising and staying healthy, not surgery.

Selina added that as a Christian, she believes in living by what the Bible says. She pointed out that there is no part of the Bible where Sarah or any other woman of God altered their body, so she will never do it.

“BBL is against the will of God. I don’t know which part of the Bible said that Sarah had any body enhancement. And if we are going by the Bible, I don’t see anywhere that tells me to go have body altercations,” she said.

The topic of female celebrities undergoing BBL has been trending in Ghana’s entertainment industry for some time. Singer Wendy Shay recently shared her thoughts on the issue. S

he said that although BBL is a personal choice, she would rather spend her money helping people than on body enhancement.

“It’s no offense to people who have BBL. If you want to have BBL, that’s your choice. But personally, I would have used that money to donate to people,” Wendy Shay stated.

A Circuit Court in Accra has sentenced a 38-year-old unemployed man to six years imprisonment for robbing a resident of Nungua of an Itel mobile phone valued at GH¢350.00

The convict, Thomas Kwabena Vordzorgbe, was found guilty of robbery after a full trial presided over by Basilia Adjei-Tawiah, but he had pleaded not guilty to the charge.

According to graphiconline.com report on August 5, 2025, prosecuting, Chief Inspector John Gohoho told the court that the complainant, a Nigerian national from Delta State residing at Nungua Cocoa Beach, had on November 11, 2022, gone to a popular joint at Spintex to socialise with friends and left the venue around 3:00 am the next day.

Vordzorgbe, who saw the complainant from a distance, followed him to the station and demanded that he hands over his belongings.

When the complainant resisted, the convict pulled out a machete and slashed him on the left hand, forcing him to surrender the phone.

The matter was reported to the Nungua Police Station, and the complainant was issued a medical form for treatment.

Later that day, around 7:00 pm, the complainant received information that the convict was offering the stolen phone for sale at the Nungua Lorry Station.

With assistance from others, the complainant confronted and identified Vordzorgbe, leading to his arrest.

A search led them to the stolen phone in his possession, and he admitted to the offence in his cautioned statement.

US demands $15,000 deposit for visa applicants from two African countries

Malawi and Zambia citizens need $15,000 deposit to get US visas Malawi and Zambia citizens need $15,000 deposit to get US visas

The US will require citizens from Malawi and Zambia to pay a $15,000 (£11,300) deposit for a tourist or business visa, according to the US state department.

The 12-month pilot programme aims to curb visa overstays “or where screening and vetting information is considered deficient”, according to a notice published by the state department.

Officials say that citizens of countries other than Malawi and Zambia may soon also need to pay a similar deposit, which will be returned at the end of their visit to the US.

The US administration has taken several steps to further President Donald Trump’s agenda of stemming illegal immigration.

Trump signed an executive order on the first day of his second term to this effect.

The state department notice, published on Tuesday, says: “Aliens applying for visas as temporary visitors for business or pleasure (B-1/B-2) and who are nationals of countries identified by the Department as having high visa overstay rates, where screening and vetting information is deemed deficient, or offering Citizenship by Investment, if the alien obtained citizenship with no residency requirement, may be subject to the pilot program.

“Consular officers may require covered non-immigrant visa applicants to post a bond of up to $15,000 as a condition of visa issuance, as determined by the consular officers.”

Figures published in 2023 by the US Department of Homeland Security show that about 14% of visitors from Malawi overstay their visas, compared to 11% of Zambian visitors.

Other countries with high overstay rates include Haiti (31%), Myanmar (27%) and Yemen (20%).

Since coming to office in January, Trump has signed orders to roll back humanitarian programmes for migrants from certain countries who are already in the US.

The Republican president has also banned foreign nationals from 12 countries from travelling to the US, and imposed partial restrictions on another seven.

His administration has revoked visas for hundreds of international students and detained several others on college campuses across the US, often without any warning or recourse for appeals.

The state department has said it is targeting those who were involved in activities that “run counter” to US national interests.

Many of those targeted have participated in some form of pro-Palestinian activity.

But there have been other cases where cancellations appear to be connected to those with some sort of criminal record, or legal infractions like driving over the speed limit, immigration lawyers have said.

For women who appreciate effortless sophistication, pairing chiffon shirts with pants has become an increasingly popular fashion choice. This chic combination effortlessly blends comfort with modern style, making it suitable for a wide range of occasions—from casual outings to semi-formal events.

Chiffon, known for its lightweight and flowing texture, brings a graceful and feminine appeal to any outfit. Its sheer quality adds a subtle touch of softness and delicacy, making it an ideal fabric for women who want to highlight their elegant side. Chiffon shirts come in various styles, often adorned with intricate details such as ruffles, pleats, lace accents, or delicate embroidery. Whether in soft pastels or bold, vibrant colors, these tops can elevate any look.

When paired with well-fitted pants, chiffon shirts create a balanced and polished silhouette. Tailored trousers—whether slim-cut, flared, or high-waisted—complement the light, airy nature of chiffon by adding structure and definition. High-waisted styles are particularly flattering, as they elongate the legs and emphasize the waist, creating a graceful and refined shape.

What makes this combination truly stand out is its versatility. It transitions seamlessly from daytime wear to evening glam. In a professional setting, a neutral chiffon blouse with straight-leg pants offers a polished appearance. For an evening event, simply switch to a more embellished chiffon top, accessorize with statement jewelry, and finish with stylish heels.

Chiffon shirts paired with pants offer a winning formula for the modern woman: elegance, ease, and adaptability. This outfit choice is a must-have for those looking to express sophistication without compromising comfort. Whether for work, social outings, or special events, this pairing remains timeless and effortlessly stylish.

Schools Are Only As Good As The Parents They Have: Rethinking The Role Of Families In Basic Education

Children in basic school

“If you want to measure the quality of a school, don’t start with the building or the curriculum—start with the parents.”

In many education reform discussions, we focus on teacher training, curriculum reviews, classroom infrastructure, and government policies. These are all undeniably important. Yet, there’s a quieter, often underestimated force shaping school quality—parents.

Particularly at the basic school level, where foundational skills and character are formed, the impact of parenting cannot be overstated. A school is not just a collection of classrooms and staff; it is a community ecosystem, and at the heart of this ecosystem are families. When schools struggle, it is rarely just about weak leadership or inadequate resources. Sometimes, it is the absence of engaged, responsible, and value-conscious parents.

The Myth of “The School Will Fix It”

We’ve adopted a flawed societal expectation: that schools can raise children. Parents drop off their children at the school gate—sometimes literally and emotionally—and assume that the teachers will not only educate them but also instill values, discipline, ambition, and manners.

But schools were never designed to replace the home. They are a complement. When parents are disengaged, disrespectful, inconsistent, or absent in a child’s educational life, the school becomes a lone soldier in a battle that requires a whole army.

Five Ways Parents Shape School Quality

  1. Value Transmission
Children mirror what they see at home. When a parent values learning, punctuality, respect, and integrity, it is often reflected in the child. A school with many such children quickly becomes a school where academic and behavioral standards are naturally high.
  2. Discipline Backing
No matter how structured a school is, it cannot successfully discipline a child whose parents undermine every corrective action. A strong school-parent partnership ensures that the same standards are upheld at home and in school.
  3. Parental Involvement
Schools with high parental participation in PTA meetings, volunteerism, home-based support, and school events tend to be more effective. These schools evolve faster, communicate better, and feel more like communities.
  4. Financial Commitment and Prioritization
Basic schools depend on timely fee payments, resource contributions, and parent-led initiatives to function well—especially in contexts where state support is minimal. When parents consistently under-prioritize their children’s education financially, the school’s progress stalls.
  5. Cultural Tone
Parents help set the culture of a school. Are parents respectful or entitled? Do they spread gossip or encourage solutions? Do they model collaboration or hostility toward staff? A school’s atmosphere is often a reflection of the collective spirit of its parent body.

A Thought Experiment

Imagine two schools. Both have similar infrastructure and teachers. But in one, parents attend meetings, follow up on homework, read notices, pay fees on time, reinforce school values at home, and provide encouragement. In the other, parents are frequently absent, quarrel with staff, ignore communications, delay payments, and spoil disciplinary efforts.

Now ask yourself—which school would perform better? Which one would teachers be more committed to? Which one would attract better students and staff? The answer is obvious.

When Parents Lead, Schools Soar

Some of the world’s best schools are not defined by marble walls or digital whiteboards—they are defined by strong parent-school partnerships. When parents see the school as an extension of their home and their role as educators continues beyond drop-off, transformation happens.

This is not to say schools should abdicate their responsibilities or place blame on parents. But it is a reminder that no school can rise above the quality of its community, and at the center of that community are parents.

What Should Change?
• Parent Education: Schools should invest in educating parents—through regular seminars, reading clubs, and training—on how to support learning at home and be effective partners.
• Parent Codes of Conduct: Just as students have rules, schools can benefit from clear expectations for parental behavior and engagement.
• Celebrate Model Parents: Recognizing and rewarding parents who consistently support the school sends a signal that their contributions matter.
• Feedback Loops: Schools must build systems that allow parents to contribute ideas—not just complaints—and co-own the direction of the school.

Conclusion: The Mirror We Must Face

Basic schools, especially private ones, are under increasing pressure to prove their worth. Yet, much of that worth is tied to the quality of families that walk through their gates. A school that lacks supportive parents will find itself swimming upstream no matter how visionary its leadership is.

So the next time we ask why a school isn’t doing well, perhaps we should ask another question: What kind of parents does this school have?

Because if the home is broken, no classroom can fully fix it.
