Paul Adom-Otchere is a former chairman of Ghana Airports Company
The Office of the Special Prosecutor has detained Paul Adom-Otchere, a former Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited’s board, and two others.
Adom-Otchere, a seasoned broadcaster in Ghana, and the two others – Otchere Kwame Baffour Awuah, Group Executive, Commercial Services, GACL, and Albert Adjetey Adjei-Laryea, CEO of Devnest Systems – were detained after honouring an invitation by the OSP.
According to a post shared by the OSP on social media, the three were questioned over possible procurement breaches in the revenue assurance contract between GACL and Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML).
“Mr Adom-Otchere is under investigation in connection with a revenue assurance contract between the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) and a private firm owned by the proprietor of Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML). The OSP is examining possible procurement breaches, including a sole-sourced contract awarded to a company other than the one approved by the GACL Board,” part of the post, which was shared on Thursday, July 31, 2025, reads.
The OSP indicated that the three men have been charged and were detained after failing to meet the bail conditions that were set for their release.
“The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has interviewed and formally charged the former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, Paul Adom-Otchere, and two others. However, Mr Adom-Otchere has so far been unable to meet his bail conditions.
“He is required to present two landed properties (of no specific value) registered in his name. However, he has informed the OSP that he does not own landed property in Ghana. As a result, he remains in custody until the bail terms are satisfied,” the OSP said.

Meanwhile, watch as Prophet Worlasi shares bombshell prophesies on Bawumia and NPP on The Lowdown:
The Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has called for renewed efforts to drive digital transformation across Ghana and the African continent, describing technology as essential for economic development and inclusive growth.
He made the call while delivering the keynote address at the inaugural MOBEX Africa Partnership Day, held in Accra on July 31, 2025.
The event, themed “Powering Innovations Through Partnerships,” brought together government officials, private sector leaders, development partners, startups, and civil society organisations.
Debrah stressed that digital technology is no longer a luxury but a critical tool for national development. He urged stakeholders to invest in innovation, digital infrastructure, and skills development to prepare Africa’s youth for the digital economy.
“Digital technology is a lifeline for development. The future belongs to nations that empower their people through innovation,” he said.
The Chief Executive Officer of MOBEX Africa, George Spencer Quaye, on his part underscored the importance of partnerships in building Africa’s digital future.
He noted that Africa is at a critical turning point and that collaboration between government, businesses, and innovators is necessary to overcome challenges such as infrastructure deficits, regulatory gaps, and digital exclusion.
“At the heart of Mobex Africa’s mission is the belief that no single entity can transform the continent alone. It is through partnerships that these efforts are amplified and sustained,” Quaye said.
“Governments may create enabling policies, enterprises may develop solutions, and innovators may bring ideas to life – but it is through partnerships that these efforts are amplified and sustained,” he added.
Quaye further argued that the continent is at a critical inflection point that requires coordinated, cross-sector solutions.
The event also showcased initiatives under the MOBEX Africa platform, including technology expos, digital skills programs, innovation challenges, and investment opportunities aimed at promoting digital sovereignty and competitiveness.
Quaye expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his long-standing support of MOBEX Africa, noting that he had encouraged the platform in 2016 to lead the charge for digital transformation across the continent.
The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has issued a strong warning to the Chief of Army Staff, demanding swift action against soldiers implicated in the recent assault of a JoyNews reporter.
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, July 31, the GJA President cautioned that the military’s credibility was on the line and threatened public exposure of the individuals involved if immediate steps were not taken to identify and sanction them.
“The military should understand that failure on their part to expose and sanction the perpetrators of this crime will have damning consequences, and we will embarrass them. If the military fails to expose the members, the Chief of Army Staff, we are not just serving notice. We are not threatened.
“We have done our work and we are prepared. If you fail to do so, we shall embarrass you. We will come out boldly and expose your men,” Dwumfour stated.
The warning follows disturbing revelations by JoyNews journalist Carlos Carlony, who reported that he was assaulted and forcefully detained by National Security operatives while covering a demolition exercise at a warehouse reportedly owned by businessman Daniel McKorley, popularly known as McDan.
According to Carlony, the military personnel questioned why he and his team were filming the event. Despite identifying themselves as journalists, one officer allegedly attacked him from behind just as he was preparing to go live on air.
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has since confirmed the commencement of an internal investigation into what it described as the “inappropriate conduct” of its personnel during the incident.
GJA threatens media blackout on Police over attacks on Journalists
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has strongly condemned the attack and unlawful detention of JoyNews journalist Carlos Calony and his cameraman by military-uniformed National Security operatives.
Speaking during a press conference today, July 31, GJA President Albert Dwumfour voiced deep concern over the incident, which occurred whilst the journalist was covering the recent demolition of a warehouse in Accra, owned by businessman Daniel McKorley (McDan).
“The GJA is deeply troubled by the attack and unlawful detention by National Security operatives on JoyNews journalist Carlos Calony and his cameraman, who were covering the recent demolishing of the McDan warehouse in Accra, owned by businessman Daniel McKorley,” Mr. Dwumfour stated.
He characterised the incident as a blatant violation of media rights:
“In a blatant show of disregard for media rights, the journalist was obstructed, hit at the neck, arrested, harassed and detained while attempting to gather facts and report to the public.”
According to the GJA, the detention lacked any legal justification:
“This arrest and detention were not based on any justifiable legal grounds. Rather, they appeared to be an attempt to suppress information and silence scrutiny of the demolition exercise.”
Describing the incident as censorship by force, he demanded accountability:
“This is censorship through force. They must be condemned in the strongest terms. We demand that the Ghana Police Service and National Security provide a public explanation for the arrest and detention of Carlos Calony and his cameraman.”
He also called for transparency about any investigation, saying, “Additionally, we request the immediate release of any findings or internal reviews conducted regarding the uniformed officers involved.”
Reaffirming the media’s right to operate freely, Mr. Dwumfour asserted:
“The media must be allowed to report freely on public matters without fear of repression. We are public-interest media, and we must stress that. We should be allowed to do our duty without fear or favour.”
Background
Armed military officers on Wednesday, July 30, attacked JoyNews reporter Carlos Calony, his cameraman and an eyewitness while the journalist was covering a demolition exercise at Spintex in Accra.
The soldiers further damaged the equipment of the journalist, leaving his camera in ruins and the victims with injuries.
Mr Calony was later whisked away in a military vehicle, and his phones were seized as he was subjected to intense interrogation at Blue Gate, a facility by National Security where daily operations are carried out.
He was only released after the intervention by the Minister for the Interior, with the government condemning the action of the soldiers.

Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei has justify provision in bill restricting foreign scholarships
The Registrar of the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, has justified a key provision in the proposed Scholarships Authority Bill, which restricts the award of foreign scholarships to academic programmes that are already available in Ghana.
Speaking at the official launch of the 2025 Local Tertiary Scholarships Programme in Accra on Wednesday, July 30, Asafo-Agyei said the clause is intended to strengthen local institutions and reduce the country’s heavy reliance on foreign training.
According to him, the tendency for students to pursue studies abroad under the excuse of inadequate facilities at home contributes to a cycle of underdevelopment.
“We usually want to travel out for education under the guise of unavailable equipment locally for better resources abroad. But if we don’t empower our local institutions, how will they raise revenue to build their capacity?” he asked.
He warned that failing to invest in local academic infrastructure only perpetuates a vicious cycle where institutions remain underfunded and under-equipped.
“There must be an end to this trend. That is why we took the decision that if a course is available locally, then students must pursue it here,” he said.
He further disclosed that Ghana currently owes the UK approximately £40 million in scholarship-related expenses, an amount he said could have been invested in domestic universities to boost capacity and infrastructure.
“Imagine if this debt was owed to local institutions. When we pay, they generate revenue, and that enables them to expand infrastructure and acquire the very equipment we claim they lack,” Asafo-Agyei noted.
The Scholarships Authority Bill is expected to provide a comprehensive legal framework for administering government scholarships and streamlining funding sources.

The Minority in Parliament has apologised to Ghanaians for the implementation of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) under the Akufo-Addo administration, which left many, especially pensioners, suffering significant financial losses due to haircuts on their investments.
The DDEP was introduced as part of the government’s economic recovery strategy in response to a severe fiscal crisis. It aimed to restore debt sustainability by restructuring domestic bonds.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament during the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review on Thursday, July 31, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin acknowledged the pain caused by the programme and accepted responsibility for the decision.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin further criticised the Mahama-led government for failing to acknowledge the foundation laid by the previous administration and accused the current leadership of political hypocrisy and double standards.
“The NPP devised solutions: the Energy Sector Levy Act to systematically pay down energy liability, Fiscal Responsibility Law, capping deficit at 5% of GDP and the Debt Exchange to restore sustainability.
“These are actions of a responsible government, and we are proud that we took these decisions, not reckless ones. Again, we take responsibility, we say sorry to Ghanaians, we had to take a painful decision [DDEP] to implement this,” he said.
He defended the New Patriotic Party’s legacy, stating that the previous administration stabilised a “grave situation,” and that the current government is benefitting from that groundwork without making new contributions of its own.
“You’re taking advantage of this painful decision without giving credit to us. Who is a hypocrite in this matter? You are the one found wanting, and indeed, you are the political naysayers; you engage in double standards and engage in political hypocrisy.
“The NPP cleaned up a grave situation, and now the new administration touts the clean-up floor as if it were their own accomplishment. What have you put in place? None,” he criticised.

Ghana’s leading policy think tank, IMANI Africa, has issued a strong warning against what it describes as dangerous and unlawful political interference in the country’s private pensions sector.
The organisation fears that recent developments, if left unchecked, could threaten the long-term retirement security of Ghanaian workers and destabilise confidence in the country’s financial system.
Stephane Miezan is the President of Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry
The Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI) has welcomed the 25% policy rate announced by the Bank of Ghana, describing it as a move to cushion players within the business community.
According to the chamber, the decision aligns with a formal request submitted to the Central Bank on July 29, 2025, calling for a reduction in the policy rate to improve access to credit and spur private sector activity.
In a statement issued on July 30, 2025, as sighted by GhanaWeb Business, the chamber cited improvements in macroeconomic indicators such as declining inflation, a strengthening of the cedi, and easing global financial conditions creating a conducive environment to lower interest rates.
“This policy move is a critical step toward easing the cost of doing business. It will help stimulate investment in key sectors including manufacturing, agribusiness, pharmaceuticals, and other value-added industries particularly within the context of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA),” it stated.
The chamber commended the MPC’s efforts to strike a balance between maintaining price stability and promoting inclusive, sustainable growth.
It further expressed confidence that the rate cut, when combined with ongoing fiscal consolidation and regulatory reforms, would help restore business confidence and accelerate economic transformation.
However, the GNCCI urged commercial banks and financial institutions to reflect the new policy rate in their lending rates to ensure the intended impact reaches businesses, calling on the government to provide additional support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and export-oriented industries.
“The GNCCI remains committed to working closely with the Bank of Ghana and all stakeholders to foster a business-friendly environment that drives private sector-led growth and national development,” it added.

How Virtual Reality is enhancing business and customer experience
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has threatened to impose a nationwide media blackout on all police-related activities if urgent and decisive action is not taken to address recent assaults on journalists.
The warning comes in the wake of over 10 violent incidents involving media personnel, including the assault of a GHOne TV reporter during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on July 17, and a separate attack on July 30 involving JoyNews reporter Carlos Calony, his cameraman, and an eyewitness, allegedly by armed military officers during a demolition exercise at Spintex in Accra.
On February 11, some journalists were also assaulted in the Ashanti Region during the Council of State elections for the region. On 27th May, another journalist was during a protest by the NPP over the detention of the Party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, July 31, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour condemned the incidents in strong terms, describing them as unacceptable and dangerous to the country’s democratic fabric.
He warned that if the Ghana Police Service fails to act decisively within seven days, the GJA, in consultation with key stakeholders, will direct all media houses to cease coverage of police activities.
“If the Ghana Police Service fails to act decisively within the next 7 days, the GJA, in consultation with key stakeholders, will announce a nationwide media blackout on all police activities. Instruct our members to withhold coverage of police events and editorial engagements with the police,” he declared.
“This is not a threat, it’s a necessary action to defend the integrity and safety of every Ghanaian journalist,” he added.
The GJA is demanding immediate investigations and sanctions against all officers involved, stressing that continued attacks on journalists undermine press freedom and threaten public accountability.
The ruling party, NDC, has cleared all three aspirants who picked up forms to contest in the party’s upcoming primaries in the Akwatia Constituency.
The three aspirants include former Member of Parliament, Henry Boakye; Bernard Bediako Baidoo, the current NDC Akwatia Constituency Secretary; and Erasmus Koney Ali completed their vetting process on Thursday, July 31.
Barcelona players will have “DR Congo – Heart of Africa” emblazoned on the back of their training shirts from the start of next season, after the top Spanish football team agreed on a four-year deal with the central African country.
The partnership will reportedly cost the Democratic Republic of Congo 44m euros ($50m; £38m), although the club has not disclosed the figure it will receive.
A rebel group has seized large parts of eastern DR Congo this year, although a ceasefire has recently been agreed.
The arrangement has faced criticism from some Congolese who have questioned their government’s priorities, especially as its own football league has been plagued by chronic underfunding for years.
But the authorities have defended the agreement, saying that it will help raise the profile of the country.
As part of the deal, Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium will host what the club called an “immersive exhibition… to showcase the cultural diversity and sporting tradition” of DR Congo.
The country’s Sports Minister, Didier Budimbu, told BBC Focus on Africa that the agreement includes a training camp for 50 young Congolese players and 10 coaches.
Barcelona says it will also run camps for children across a range of sports, including basketball, handball and roller hockey.
DR Congo has signed similar deals with Italian side AC Milan and French team AS Monaco. Last month, Budimbu described them as part of a strategy to “reposition” DR Congo as a leader in tourism and investment opportunities.
But some think the money should rather be spent in the country.
“When you talk about tourism, it should be about things to see when people come here… for me, rather than investing that money [abroad], they should invest that money to build the country first,” Muzinga Lemfu, resident of the capital, Kinshasa, told the BBC.
But another resident, Freddy Kabengele, saw the advantages of the deal and said he was happy “to show DR Congo off to the world and also to bring tourists to the country”.
Since 2018, DR Congo’s regional rival Rwanda has had a sponsorship deal with English side Arsenal promoting tourism in the country with the slogan “Visit Rwanda” on the sleeves of the players’ shirts. French team Paris St-Germain and German side Bayern Munich have similar deals.
These have also come under fire, especially recently as Rwanda has been accused of backing rebels in DR Congo in a devastating conflict in the east, which it denies.
In February, DR Congo Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner wrote to the clubs questioning the “morality” of the arrangement.
The Rwandan government dismissed the accusations of sports-washing as a “distraction”.
Some critics of the Congolese government have expressed concern that the European deals could overshadow the fighting in the east and the authorities’ troubling human rights record.
In June, Rwanda and the DR Congo signed a peace deal aimed at ending decades of fighting.
In 2023, a deal that South Africa’s tourism board pursued with Tottenham Hotspur did not come to fruition after complaints from the public.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to Ghana’s Parliament on Thursday saw a moment of shared surprise and smiles when he said, “India has over 2,500 political parties,” pausing to smile as murmurs rippled through the chamber.
“I repeat, 2,500 political parties,” he chuckled, prompting louder reactions from the parliamentarians. PM Modi addressed the Ghana Parliament in English.
Speaking on democracy, PM Modi described India as the “mother of democracy,” stressing the importance of openness and dialogue in a democratic setup.
“True democracy promotes discussion and debate. It unites people, it supports dignity and promotes human rights,” he said.
“Hamare liye loktantra system nahi, sanskaar hai,” PM Modi said in Hindi. He then repeated the sentence in English, ” For us, democracy is not just a system, it is a part of our fundamental values.”
He highlighted India’s vast diversity as a strength of its democratic fabric. “Twenty different parties governing different states, 22 official languages, thousands of dialects. This is also the reason that people who have come to India have always been welcomed with open hearts,” he said.
“The same spirit helps Indians integrate easily wherever they go,” PM Modi added.
Following PM Modi’s address, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, also repeated the humongous figure of “2,500 political parties”, which elicited laughter from Ghana MPs as well as PM Modi.
After addressing the Ghana Parliament, PM Modi greeted the MPs and shook hands with them.
PM Modi’s visit to Ghana, which is the first prime ministerial visit from India to Ghana in three decades, is part of his five-nation tour.
From Ghana, PM Modi will travel to Trinidad and Tobago on a two-day visit from July 3 to 4. He will then visit Argentina from July 4 to 5, before travelling to Brazil to attend the 17th BRICS summit followed by a state visit. In the final leg of his visit, PM Modi will travel to Namibia.

MTN Ghana has reported a 55.8 per cent surge in profit after tax to GHS 3.6 billion for the first six months of 2025, riding on strong growth across its data, mobile money and voice services.
The telecommunications giant, which is Ghana’s largest mobile operator, saw its service revenue climb by 40 per cent to GH₵11.3 billion during the period, according to its unaudited half-year financial results released on Wednesday.
The Chief Executive Officer Stephen Blewett said the stellar performance was achieved through “strong commercial momentum and execution,” while crediting employees for their dedication. “These results would not be possible without the unwavering dedication and hard work of our MTN Ghana employees,” Blewett stated.
The company declared an interim dividend of GHS 0.08 per share, up from GHS 0.065 in the same period last year, rewarding shareholders for the strong performance. The dividend will be paid on September 11, 2025, to shareholders on the register as of August 22, 2025.
Key drivers of growth included:
– A 50.8% jump in data revenue to GHS 6.0 billion
– 46.4% growth in mobile money revenue to GHS 2.8 billion
– 12.6% increase in voice revenue to GHS 2.0 billion
– MTN Ghana’s subscriber base grew by 6.5% to 30.2 million, while active data users increased by 11% to 18.2 million. The company’s mobile money platform now has 17.7 million active users, up 7.4% from last year.
The results come amid improving macroeconomic conditions in Ghana, with inflation declining to 13.7 per cent in June and the cedi appreciating against the US dollar. MTN invested GH₵2.7 billion in network upgrades during the period, expanding its 4G coverage to 99.3 per cent of the population.
Looking ahead, the company said it remains focused on executing its Ambition 2025 strategy while monitoring potential risks from global geopolitical tensions.
The company’s share priced climbed to an all-time high of GH₵3.55 on the Ghana Stock Exchange in anticipation of the release of the half year report today.
Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George
Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has outlined plans to position Ghana as a powerhouse for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in West Africa.
He made this statement during a keynote address themed “Powering Innovations Through Partnerships” at the maiden MOBEX Africa Partnership Day, held on July 31, 2025, in Accra.
Central to this vision is the development of a US$1 billion Ghana-UAE Innovation and Technology Hub in Prampram. The hub is expected to host global tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Huawei, alongside local champions like Mobex Africa and Hubtel.
In his speech, the Minister emphasised that Ghana’s transformation will not rely solely on infrastructure but on people.
“We have launched the One Million Coders Programme to train one million Ghanaians, especially youth and women, in coding, AI, and emerging technologies over the next four years.
“This is not just about skills; it’s about economic liberation. It’s about equipping our young people to compete globally and create locally,” he stated.
The Minister further revealed that Ghana aims to become the AI Hub of West Africa through responsible, inclusive, and values-driven technology development.
As part of this effort, a national AI Boot Camp was recently organised for all Ministers of State to prepare every government department for AI integration.
He called for a “continental reset” to shift Africa “from digital dependence to digital determination,” and urged stakeholders to transform MOBEX Africa into a permanent, pan-African engine for digital collaboration.
“Let us invest in African innovation, not just by funding startups, but by enabling ecosystems. Let us build African digital infrastructure, not just roads and towers, but platforms and policies. Let us push for African digital inclusion, not as charity, but as strategy,” he emphasised.
Other key initiatives announced include the establishment of a National Data Exchange Hub to enable safe and transparent data sharing, and a comprehensive review of outdated ICT laws to future-proof Ghana’s digital ecosystem.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the Mahama-led administration of reversing key developmental gains and plunging the country into economic stagnation.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament during the concluding debate on the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review on Thursday, July 31, Afenyo-Markin criticised the government’s handling of key national policies initiated by the previous administration.
He alleged that the government, which he described as the “Apostles of Reset,” has undermined Ghana’s economic foundation and international reputation.
“We initiated the transformational 1D1F to create jobs to boost local production in every corner of Ghana. The ‘Apostles of Reset’ have murdered this industrial revolution and condemned these initiatives to economic stagnation.
“We launched the Agenda 111 Hospitals to heal our people and create a foundation for medical tourism. The Apostles of Reset have killed this infrastructure expansion, leaving communities without hope for quality healthcare.
“We pioneered planting for food and jobs to feed our people, to ensure food security and create agricultural wealth. The so-called Appstles of Reset have slaughtered these agricultural transformations, leaving farmers abandoned and food security compromised,” he stated.
According to the Minority Leader, the Mahama-led administration has been promoting illegal mining rather than genuine economic transformation.
“All they know is the ‘GoldBod, GoldBod, GoldBod’ to promote galamsey,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin also accused the administration of damaging Ghana’s diplomatic relations and international credibility, asserting that the country had become isolated on the global stage under the current leadership.

Chowdeck, a YC-backed Nigerian on-demand delivery platform, has surpassed 1,000 orders in a single day in Ghana, just three months after launching operations in Accra, a milestone that took 11 months to reach back home.
“I see this achievement as more than just a number. It is proof that the vision propelling Chowdeck transcends borders,” CEO Femi Aluko said in a LinkedIn post on Thursday.
Founded in October 2021, Chowdeck has emerged as a formidable player in Nigeria’s competitive $1 billion food delivery market, which is projected to grow to $2.4 billion by 2032, according to IMARC. The startup has served over 1 million users and employs about 20,000 riders across 11 Nigerian cities. Its expansion into Ghana, announced in May 2025, marks the first step in a broader pan-African strategy.

Chowdeck’s Ghanaian operations, covering neighbourhoods like Osu, Cantonments, and East Legon, kicked off with a rider training program and a customer rewards scheme to drive adoption.
Riders have been incentivised by “Rider Games,” a performance-based incentive system offering cash bonuses and access to loans up to GHC 1,000. Customers benefit from a referral program granting GHS10 discounts on initial orders and a tiered “ChowScore” loyalty system, which offers free deliveries and exclusive discounts. These initiatives have helped with market penetration.
In Ghana, competition from established players like Bolt Food tests Chowdeck’s adaptability. The company’s strategic hire of Henry Whyte, its Ghana country lead and former Bolt Ghana operations manager, will help strengthen its position in a highly competitive market.
With over ₦30 billion ($19 million) in deliveries in Nigeria and a growing vendor base, including a woman-led business achieving ₦2.3 billion ($1.5 million) in revenue, Chowdeck continues to show it may be able to put up a good fight for market share in Ghana.

The Bank Hospital has refuted allegations that it breached the medical confidentiality of the late highlife legend, Charles Kojo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, who passed away at the facility on Saturday, July 26, 2025.
In a press release dated Wednesday, July 30, the hospital expressed condolences to the musician’s family, fans, and the nation, describing his death as a significant loss to Ghana and the world.
“Our hearts go out to his family, loved ones, the government, and fans around the world during this time of sorrow,” the statement read.
The hospital also addressed what it described as “false claims circulating online,” particularly allegations made by media personality Valentina Nana Agyeiwaa, also known as Afia Schwarzenegger, suggesting a breach of medical privacy in the handling of Mr. Fosu’s care.
“No breach of Mr. Fosu’s medical privacy or confidentiality occurred,” the hospital stated firmly.
“His care was handled with professionalism, dignity, and strict confidentiality. His family was involved every step of the way.”
The Bank Hospital emphasised its status as one of Africa’s premier private healthcare institutions and reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the highest ethical and professional standards in patient care.
It further disclosed that a formal internal review is currently underway to assess all events surrounding Mr. Fosu’s admission and passing, as part of its continuous quality improvement efforts.
“We urge the public to seek and share only verified information from credible sources,” the statement concluded.
President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the Aflao market in the Volta Region will be reconstructed as part of a national plan to upgrade markets across the country.
He said the project falls under the Markets Enhancement Programme, which is being spearheaded by the Vice President and aims to improve trade infrastructure in key commercial areas.
According to President Mahama, the reconstruction of the Aflao market will help boost cross-border trade between Ghana and neighbouring Togo, while improving the business environment for traders in the region.
The President made this known during a meeting with the Volta Region House of Chiefs at the Flagstaff House, where he outlined several development initiatives targeted at the region.
He emphasized that modern, well-structured markets are essential for economic growth, especially in border towns like Aflao that serve as trade entry points.
The market project is part of a wider effort to stimulate economic activity, create jobs, and improve local commerce.
He disclosed that several other markets across the country have also been earmarked for reconstruction under the same programme.
President Mahama assured the chiefs that government remains committed to enhancing infrastructure in the Volta Region, with projects covering roads, education, agriculture, and chieftaincy support.
President of the Volta Region House of Chiefs, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, described the market intervention as timely and necessary.
He said improved trade facilities would bring relief to traders and strengthen the regional economy.
Ghanaian dancehall musician Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, has once again made a bold statement, this time targeting the country’s former Inspector General of Police (IGP).
In a live TikTok session shared on social media on July 30, 2025, Shatta Wale praised the Ghana Police Service for their swift action against a pastor who recently prophesied his death.
During his remarks, Shatta Wale took a swipe at the former IGP, referring to him as a “celebrity police officer.”
He claimed that if the incident had occurred during the former IGP’s tenure, no action would have been taken.
“Shoutout to Ghana Police. The police acted like I was a real citizen. And this is the first time such a thing has happened. If it were some IGP, like, nothing would have been done. He wouldn’t have acted when the pastor talked.
“But if I had acted, he would have heard me, because he is a Facebooker. I have never seen an IGP who loves social media as much as that one. He is a celebrity IGP,” he said.
Shatta Wale’s comments came in response to a viral video by a Ghanaian pastor, Daniel Yaw Donkoh, who claimed to have had a vision in which the musician was killed.
Following the prophecy, news emerged that the Ghana Police Service had taken action. On July 28, 2025, Reverend Donkoh appeared before the Dansoman Circuit Court, where he was charged with one count of publishing false news.
The pastor pleaded not guilty to the charge. The court subsequently granted him bail in the amount of GH¢20,000, with three sureties, one of whom must prove their ability to cover the amount if required.
Also, the court ordered Reverend Donkoh to report to the police every two weeks. The case has since been adjourned and is scheduled to resume on August 27, 2025.

Togbe Tepre Hodo IV says he is convinced the government’s resetting agenda is well underway
The Paramount Chief of the Anfoega Traditional Area and President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, has commended the ruling government for its policies and governance during its first few months in office.
According to him, he is convinced that the government’s resetting agenda is well underway, stating that the stability of the cedi, fuel price management, among other factors, are clear evidence of this progress.
Togbe Tepre Hodo IV made this known when the Volta Regional House of Chiefs paid a courtesy visit to President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang at the Jubilee House on Thursday, July 31, 2025.
“Your Excellency, we are also here to acknowledge and to encourage you to continue with the good work you have been doing so far in terms of steering the ship of state. There is stability of the cedi, inflation has gone down, fuel prices are more manageable now and we thank you very much for all of these.
“We also wish to thank you for the recent National Education Forum, which was established and which will assist in improving on the quality of education of the nation. These are positive signs that the reset agenda has started working,” he said.
Togbe Tepre Hodo IV also expressed his gratitude to President Mahama, particularly for ensuring that the Volta Region was not overlooked in his ministerial appointments.
He, however, expressed hope that the appointees will live up to expectations and fulfill their mandate for the country’s development.
“We have followed very keenly the appointments that you have made from the Volta region and, we are happy and impressed about the number of appointees in your government. We are hopeful that they will acquit themselves creditably in order to bring honor not only to the Volta region, but to Ghana as a whole,” he added.
A high-powered delegation from Zanzibar led by the Director of Planning, Policy and Research at the Office of the President of Zanzibar, Mr. Abdullah Mgongo, and the Municipal Director of West B Municipal Council, Ms. Sabra I.
Machano have paid a working visit to Jospong Group’s facilities in Ghana, specifically Zoomlion Ghana Limited, to tap into the company’s expertise in sustainable waste management solutions.
The delegation toured Zoomlion’s advanced waste management infrastructure—ranging from waste sorting and composting facilities to integrated recycling plants and landfill systems.
Jospong Group of Companies, led by its flagship subsidiary, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, has established itself as a benchmark for waste management in Africa.
The visit is part of Zanzibar’s efforts to adopt tested, scalable models to address its growing urban waste challenge, and the Jospong model, developed in Ghana, stood out.
“We are deeply impressed by the systems we’ve seen here—from community-level waste collection to high-end processing facilities. It is clear that Jospong’s impact goes beyond sanitation; it drives job creation, environmental sustainability, and economic transformation,” said Mr. Mgongo.
He added that, “What Jospong has achieved in Ghana is remarkable. We see a clear opportunity for partnership, especially as Zanzibar pushes forward with reforms in our municipal waste management strategies.”
As part of the visit, the Zanzibar delegation paid a courtesy call on Ghana’s Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, who welcomed the team on behalf of the President and people of Ghana.
The Minister commended the Jospong Group for its leadership in sanitation and its role in positioning Ghana as a hub for sustainable waste management on the continent. He assured the delegation of Ghana’s readiness to support stronger intra-African collaboration in sanitation and environmental governance.
The Director of International Business at the Jospong Group, Dr. Alexander Kumi-Larbi Jnr., reiterated the Group’s broader vision of replicating its Ghanaian success in countries across the continent—including Zanzibar—as part of its Africa Expansion Strategy.
“Our model is proven. Over the past decade, we have developed a complete waste management ecosystem in Ghana that is now being studied and adopted by other African governments,” Dr. Kumi-Larbi Jnr., stated.
“Through strategic partnerships, technology transfer, and local capacity building, we are ready to support countries like Zanzibar to build resilient, modern, and environmentally responsible waste systems.”
This engagement aligns with Jospong’s Pan-African vision to champion sustainable urban development while creating thousands of green jobs.
The Group’s expansion strategy includes technical cooperation, public-private partnerships, and the development of localised infrastructure solutions tailored to each country’s needs.
The Zanzibar visit marks yet another milestone in Jospong’s growing influence on the continent and further cements its reputation as a reliable and visionary partner in Africa’s green transformation journey.
Ghanaian dancehall sensation has launched a scathing critique against the former Inspector General of Police (IGP), accusing him of prioritizing social media clout over impartial law enforcement.
The remarks come in the wake of the swift arrest of Ghanaian Prophet D.Y. Donkor, who recently issued controversial prophetic declarations predicting misfortune for the musician.
Presidential staffer urges Ghanaians to engage institutions and prioritise peace in Bawku.
Presidential Staffer, Nana Yaa Jantuah, has urged Ghanaians to prioritise peace and propose actionable solutions to the ongoing Bawku conflict, calling for greater engagement with key government institutions.
Speaking on The Verdict with Isaac Addae on Starr 103.5 FM on the evening of Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Nana Yaa mentioned that individuals with alternative strategies should approach the appropriate authorities.
Torrential rains on the night of Saturday, July 26, 2025, caused widespread flooding in the Wa Municipality, displacing families, destroying property, and cutting off access to several communities, including Kambali, Kumbiehi, Chokor, Dobile, and Zingu.
In response, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Alhaj Issah Nura Danwanaa, has directed that all buildings constructed on waterways be marked for possible demolition. He blamed the devastation on poor urban planning and the illegal siting of structures on wetlands, which obstructs natural water flow.
“We recorded about 156.6mm of rainfall, the heaviest so far, and it caused widespread devastation. Zingu Road, for instance, has been cut off completely,” Mr. Danwanaa said in an interview with Citi News.
He revealed that the Assembly is exploring the possibility of converting flood-prone areas into irrigation dams as a long-term solution to manage excess water during heavy rains. However, he noted that such interventions would require significant financial support from government and donor agencies.
In the short term, the Assembly plans to restore access to the worst-hit areas using gravel and boulders.
The Zingu Electoral Area has been among the hardest hit. Its Assembly Member and the Presiding Member of the Wa Municipal Assembly, Abdul Wahab, said the washed-out road has left residents stranded, unable to access Wa town or their farmlands.
“This has cut us off from education, farming, and basic services. We are appealing for a lasting solution,” Wahab said.
The MCE stated that affected residents would be given the chance to relocate voluntarily. If they fail to comply, demolition will be carried out as a last resort. An emergency meeting with the affected households has been scheduled to discuss relocation plans and measures to mitigate future floods.
Residents of Zingu are also calling for the urgent repair of a collapsed bridge that has isolated them from nearby communities and essential services.
“Imagine it’s raining and a pregnant woman is coming. How will she cross? Her life, the child’s life, and even the one helping her are all at risk,” said Sabogu Victoria, a resident.
A local farmer, Mwenemana Abdul Rauf, said the collapsed road is already affecting his livelihood.
“This is the closest route to my farm. If it stays like this until harvesting time, I’ll have to use a longer route, which will cost me resources and time,” he said.
Anlo-Afiadenyigba (VR), July 31, GNA-The Keta Municipal Assembly is set to launch its Municipal Sanitation Day Clean-Up Exercise on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Anlo-Afiadenyigba to boost cleanliness and better sanitation environment in the municipality.
The event is part of President John Dramani Mahama’s and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s “Clean-Up Ghana” agenda, targeted at promote good sanitation practices in the country.
Mr. Innocent Komla Gawuah, the Keta Municipal Coordinating Director, told the Ghana News Agency that good sanitation was essential for maintaining public health and preventing the spread of diseases.
“Proper waste management and disposal are critical in keeping our environment clean to help reduce the risk of waterborne diseases,” he stated.
He said that the government has implemented various policies to promote good sanitation practices in the country and the “Clean-Up Ghana” agenda was one of such initiative aimed at encouraging citizens to take an active role in keeping the environment clean.
He urged stakeholders and organisations within the municipality to play a crucial role in promoting good sanitation practices and make it part of their daily routines.
“The Keta Municipal Assembly is working with local communities, organizations, and individuals to ensure the success of the sanitation day exercise.”
He explained that bad sanitation could have severe effects on public health and the environment and poor waste management may lead to the spread of diseases, pollution of water sources, and degradation of the environment that could affect human and other living things.
He said the Assembly is calling on the public to join hands in keeping the environment clean and encouraged residents to participate in the sanitation day exercise and make it a habit to keep the surroundings clean at all times.
Other details GNA gathered revealed that the sanitation day exercise would take place in on Saturday, August 9, Anlo-Afiadenyigba, starting at 0700 hours and the event is expected to bring together residents, organisations, stakeholders and individuals to promote good sanitation practices in the municipality.
Some residents GNA engaged described the launch of the sanitation day exercise as a significant step towards promoting good sanitation practices in the Keta municipality and urge others to participate in the event and make a commitment to keeping the environment clean.
The successful growing of foreign fruits such as apples, strawberries, pomegranates and grapes by many Ghanaians who practice backyard farming has challenged the age-old belief that such fruits could only do well in cold temperatures.
Some of these backyard farmers who spoke to The Mirror in Accra last Monday noted that the adoption of farming and specific care practices of these fruits has made it possible.
“The myth was that the country’s climate was too hot, the soil too harsh or the environment too unpredictable for such fruits to thrive. But some curious minds in the past experimented and cultured these plants, discovering that it was possible,” Retired Freight Forwarder, now backyard farmer, Mrs Faustina Alipoe, noted.
However, the large-scale farming of these fruits remains a dream as the farmers say it is cost-intensive and requires a lot of care.
Agriculturist and farmer, Abraham Akpakpavi Ahorsu, told The Mirror that one apple or strawberry seedling could cost about GH¢350.
This, he said, did not include the cost of soil treatment, fertilisers or irrigation systems, adding that there were no guarantees the plants would survive long enough to bear fruit.
“Now tell me, how many people will take that risk and buy a seedling for GH¢350? Talk less of buying large quantities for large-scale farming. It does not make business sense. Even we who sell the seedlings only sell on pre-order,” he said.
• Grapes are one of the popular fruits grown in Ghana
He observed that people were surprised when told the price and that there were people who called him a liar and social media clout chaser because they didn’t believe that he grew some of these fruits himself.
Why expensive? Explaining why they were cost-intensive to grow on a large scale especially for strawberries, grapes and apples, Mr Ahorsu said the seedlings of these plants were imported from countries such as Kenya, India, USA or South Africa. He added that they sometimes came with a ball of already processed loamy soil.
He, however, noted that because of shipping costs, the seedlings often arrived without the soil.
“The importer then can decide if they want to plant directly and nurture in a pot or graft it with an existing plant of the same or similar species. Grafting is the method where a cutting from a budding plant (scion) is joined to a mature plant (mother plant) to help it bear fruit early,” he explained.
• The reporter (right) with the Agriculturist, Mr Abraham Akpakpavi Ahorsu in a pomegranate farm at Adenta
He added that grafting helped the plant to grow stronger and fruit faster, but it shortened its lifespan and reduced the number of harvests.
“Strawberries for example can take three to eight months or more to flower and fruit. Many of these fruits also require specific types of soil mixtures, such as perlite and coco-peat, to improve water retention and aeration,” he noted.
He added that the same concept was applied to coconut trees, cutting down the fruiting time from 10 years to less than three years.
Another reason was that because Ghana’s climate was not best suited for growing these fruits, they needed special conditions like shade nets or greenhouses, which are expensive to build and maintain.
In addition, he noted that drip irrigation systems were needed to control water use carefully and avoid overwatering, especially during the dry season.
Mr Ahorsu, who has worked with the Forestry Commission and the Ministry of Agriculture, said soil quality was also a challenge. Many foreign fruits need soil that drains well and is rich in nutrients.
“In Ghana, the soil in many areas may need to be treated before it is suitable. This may involve changing the pH level of the soil, adding compost and manure,” he said.
“Compared to fruits grown locally, they require regular pruning, protection from pests and diseases, and sometimes special techniques for pollination. Even with the right care, there is no guarantee that the plant will survive or bear fruit. This makes growing them a risky investment,” he noted.
The agriculturist said another problem is that there are very few experts in Ghana who specialise in growing these foreign fruits.
“Anyone who wants to grow these fruits also would have to learn through trial and error or pay for advice from foreign consultants. This adds more to the cost and makes the process slower,” he explained.
He also noted the absence of support from the government, adding that there were no major efforts to help farmers grow apples or strawberries.
“This means farmers must handle all the costs on their own, including marketing. Since there is currently no strong market for these fruits yet, they fear they might not be able to sell them. The retail price will also be higher than the imported ones,” he added.
Grafting process
How they will thrive For small-scale purposes, Mrs Alipoe, who is the owner of Satina Farms, explained how the fruits thrived.
She grows grapes, pomegranates, mulberries, cinnamon, dragon fruits, sweet apples and others in her home at Adenta in Accra and said attention and patience were the key.
• Pomegranate thrives in the backyard of Mrs Faustina Alipoe
“Strawberries for example need a lot of love; you can’t just leave them and expect them to survive. Shade netting and controlled watering to prevent sunburn are important. They will also do well in cold areas like Aburi or Kwahu. Regular pruning is important to improve fruit production and control pests,” she said.
The Director of Elections and Research for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Evans Nimako, has expressed strong confidence in the party’s chances of retaining the Akwatia parliamentary seat in the upcoming by-election.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Citiuation Room on Thursday, July 3, Mr. Nimako said the NPP is fully prepared and committed to winning the seat in honour of the late Member of Parliament.
“I can assure that by the time the Electoral Commission is done with the conduct of this by-election, the NPP will retain the seat,” he stated.
He recounted that the NPP secured victory in Akwatia during the 2024 general elections, but the outcome was contested by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), leading to a drawn-out legal challenge that ended up at the Supreme Court.
“This is the seat that we won in 2024. By a certain arrangement, the NDC put up a needless contest, and we all saw that this constituency was being contested to the Supreme Court,” he explained.
Reflecting on the passing of the MP, Mr. Nimako added, “Thankfully, a ruling came and unfortunately, our MP had to join the ancestors. We wish him a safe journey.”
He affirmed the NPP’s resolve to secure a convincing victory for Ernest Kumi, the party’s newly endorsed candidate, as a tribute to the late legislator.
“We can assure you that we will make him happy wherever he is by retaining the seat,” he said.

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has announced a series of measures to be enforced if the Ghana Armed Forces fail to sanction military personnel who assaulted a JoyNews journalist, Carlos Carlony during a recent operation in Accra.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, July 31, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour issued a strong warning to the military high command, stating that the Association will not relent until justice is served.
“The military should understand that failure on their part to expose and sanction the said perpetrators of this crime will have damning consequences, and we will embarrass them,” Dwumfour stated.
“We are not just serving notice. We are not threatened. We have done our work and are prepared. If you fail to do so, we shall come out boldly and expose your men.”
He stressed that the assault on the JoyNews journalist, which occurred while the reporter was covering a demolition exercise, was a direct attack on press freedom and a violation of the journalist’s rights, even after identifying himself clearly to the officers involved.
In response to the incident, the GJA outlined a series of robust measures it will pursue should the military fail to take appropriate action:
1. Civil Lawsuits Against Offenders The GJA, through its legal team, will file civil suits personally against officers involved in the assault of journalists. The association made it clear that it will not allow state protection to cover individual misconduct, and perpetrators will be held liable in their capacities.
2. Collaboration with Human Rights Bodies The GJA will work with both local and international human rights organisations to document all assaults on journalists and pursue justice comprehensively.
3. Diplomatic Sanctions The Association will formally petition key embassies, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, and the European Union Delegation in Ghana, to revoke or deny visas to identified security officers who have assaulted journalists.
The GJA will urge these foreign missions to consider such individuals as threats to press freedom and national security risks.
4. International Blacklisting Letters will be sent to the United Nations, UNESCO, African Union, and ECOWAS, requesting sanctions against violators of press freedom. The GJA will advocate for such officers to be barred from international peacekeeping missions, postings, and assignments.
5. Internal Sanctions Within Security Agencies The GJA will petition the Ghana Armed Forces and the Police Council to ensure that any officer found guilty of attacking journalists is disqualified from promotion and subjected to internal disciplinary action.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces has announced the commencement of investigations into the alleged misconduct of its personnel.

Nigerian afrobeat singer, Tiwatope Omolara Savage, popularly known as Tiwa Savage, has opened up on how she disliked one of her much-anticipated songs after she had finished recording.
In a viral video sighted by GhanaWeb entertainment on July 31, 2025, Tiwa Savage noted that she hated her popular, “Eminado” song.
Tiwa Savage explained that she intended not to release the song until her boss, Don Jazzy, compelled her to.
However, according to Tiwa, her album might never have seen the light of day without including “Eminado” on the track list.
“I hated Eminado, I hated that song when I first heard it, and Jazzy was like it’s going on your album. I was like, no, it’s not. He told me the album is not coming out unless you put Eminado on it.
“He was like he understands the market. You know you have to go with Jazzy because he is Don Jazzy, and that was how the song blew,” she said.
Tiwa Savage added that she hated the idea of performing the song even after it became a hit.
“I hated it even more because now I have to perform it every time. And now I have to perform it last because that is what everybody is waiting for. And he will be looking at me,” she added.

Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey
The Parliament of Ghana has passed the Social Protection Bill 2025 into law following its third reading on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at the commencement of business.
The passage follows the consideration that ended on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
Introduced by the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the bill establishes a legal framework to enhance social protection services for vulnerable Ghanaians, including persons with disabilities, the homeless, and those in chronic poverty.
It proposes a Social Protection Fund to finance programs like the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP), Ghana School Feeding Programme, and National Health Insurance Scheme exemptions, ensuring sustainable funding and improved coordination.
MPs who spoke in support of the approval of the bill highlighted its role in streamlining welfare interventions.
The legislation addresses long-standing issues like irregular disbursements and limited program coverage, aiming to promote fairness and transparency.
The passage forms part of efforts by the government towards institutionalising social protection in Ghana.
The bill now awaits presidential assent to become law.
Ghana’s Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has charged GFA President Kurt Okraku with establishing a Ghana Football Museum.
Debrah said this at the partnership launch between the Ghana Football Association and their new partners for the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season on July 31, 2025.
Julius Debrah suggested showcasing Ghana’s football history, including legendary stories like that of Mfum, a player known for his powerful shots that could tear nets.
Debrah even proposed displaying remnants of the torn net as a potential exhibit, inviting people to visit the museum to see it.
“Kurt, I throw this challenge to you. We will definitely support you, so take it up about we having what we probably would call the Ghana Football Hall of Fame or Ghana Football Museum. Because we have mysterious stories like there was a gentleman known as Mfum who could kick a shot to tear nets. What if you go look for the remnants of the torn net to be displayed and say go to the Ghana Football Museum and see the net?” Debrah said at the launch.
He further said; “We’ve also heard stories about a goalkeeper known as Robert Mensah and he had been described as being so skillful like a cat. And amazingly, he used to have a cap that throughout 90 minutes, he would still have the cap on, and the cap would not fall. I’m sure we can get many corporate organisations to come and support. We can do the same for Tornado, can do the same for Abedi, and it will be beautiful as a sports nation to have this.”
The GFA’s partnerships with other companies highlight its commitment to boosting Ghanaian football.
The 2025/26 season is expected to start in mid-September and on May 23 and 24 in 2026, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

As a public policy advocate committed to policy integrity and the protection of the rights and financial future of Ghanaian workers, I wish to bring to the attention of the president, all his appointees, and fellow Ghanaians the growing phenomenon of dangerous political interference in the administration of privately managed pension funds.
Some political appointees at State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) are taking unilateral decisions to cancel existing pension fund contracts and reassign them to politically favoured firms.
These acts, executed without consultation with workers, are not only unlawful but also set a dangerous precedent for the integrity and sustainability of Ghana’s pensions industry.
We must remind the public and those in authority that:
Pension funds under Ghana’s Three-Tier Pensions System — particularly under the Tier-2 Defined Contribution scheme — are not the property of employers or government. They are individual investment accounts held in trust for workers by Trustees, and once contributions are made, legal ownership vests in the worker. Neither the government nor employers guarantee retirement benefits under the second and third tiers. Members, therefore, bear investment risk and carry the risk of pension scheme failure.
Pension Funds Are Not Political Spoils
This new wave of politically motivated contract terminations seeks to reward politically connected pension firms with control over billions of cedis in worker savings, regardless of performance, cost, or capacity. We saw this situation under the NPP government, and we at IMANI wrote extensively to condemn it. These actions echo the mismanagement and politicisation that plagued the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) in the past, where political interference led to high-profile investment failures and massive losses.
If we allow this patronage culture to infect the Tiers 2/3 pension space, we risk triggering a systemic crisis in the pensions sector that would undermine confidence, endanger worker retirement security, and deter responsible local and international investment in Ghana’s financial sector. The country has still not recovered from massive business failures in the banking and asset management industries, where politically aligned firms grossly misused depositors’ funds without any legal consequences. Last week, we were told that the Attorney General is discontinuing prosecution in one of the cases involving a high-profile political figure. A strong pensions system run by capable firms, devoid of political conflict, is what we seek in our quest to build a sustainable retirement system in Ghana.
Call to Action: Workers and Unions Must Resist
We call on:
All labour unions, particularly in the SOE sector, to stand firm against any attempt by political appointees and their political masters to interfere with pension service provider selection;
Workers to demand transparency and consultation before any changes are made to the management of their retirement savings;
Regulators such as the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) to act swiftly and uphold their mandate of protecting pension fund beneficiaries, not political interests, as the current NPRA CEO is believed to be portraying. A regulator is not vested with the power of appointment of service providers of pension schemes for the NPRA CEO to write letters to terminate contracts of some service providers.
Under the National Pensions Act, 2008 (Act 766), employers and, by extension, their political appointees, have no legal authority to tamper with or redirect pension funds once they are remitted. Pension fund assets do not sit on the employer’s balance sheet, and attempts to use them as political rewards or leverage represent a clear conflict of interest that could spiral into large-scale abuse and mismanagement. Let’s keep politicians very far from our pension funds.
A Moment of Truth for Ghana’s Financial Future
The pensions industry has grown steadily over the past 15 years, now managing over GHS80 billion in assets. This growth must not be reversed by short-term political gains or misguided control. We cannot afford to repeat the SSNIT-era mistakes with the Tier-2 system. Remember, the scars of Akufo-Addo’s haircuts on pension assets and pensioner savings still remain with us. I feel personally motivated to take up this fight, in the interest of Ghanaian workers, for the simple reason that Tier 2, is the only financial fallback most Ghanaians can retire to, considering the dark clouds hanging over SSNIT today.
President John Dramani Mahama has spoken boldly about resetting Ghana’s governance and restoring accountability. We urge His Excellency and all stakeholders in his administration to act decisively and preserve the independence of Ghana’s pension system.
This is not just about contracts. It’s about the dignity of the Ghanaian worker, the protection of Ghanaian enterprises, and the future of retirement income security in our nation. This piece seeks to inform the general public and contributors to the pensions system to be on guard. The next piece would name and shame firms and persons behind attempts to appropriate pension funds as political spoils.

The Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah, has strongly criticised the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for what he described as a weak and inadequate response to the assault of JoyNews journalist Carlos Calony by military personnel.
His comments follow a statement issued by the GAF announcing the commencement of investigations into the incident, which occurred on July 30 during a demolition exercise at a warehouse reportedly owned by McDan Company Limited, founded by businessman Daniel McKorley.
Speaking in an interview with Joy FM on Thursday, July 31, Mr. Braimah dismissed the GAF’s response as insufficient, saying the military must go beyond issuing statements and take swift disciplinary action against the officers involved.
“We can only look forward to realistic action being taken rather than this peripheral statement that we are investigating. What exactly are they investigating?” he asked.
Mr. Braimah described the assault as “deeply embarrassing” and “completely untenable,” especially given the widely circulated video evidence of the incident. He questioned why the GAF would suggest it does not know the officers involved.
“I’ve had very respectable generals reach out to say they themselves are quite disappointed with the statement issued yesterday by the military,” he said. “What happened didn’t happen in secret. We are not speculating. It is not an allegation—this happened in the open. Videos have been seen.”
He warned that failure to act decisively would only encourage further misconduct within the ranks.
“Sometimes, yes, you don’t want to take actions that will demoralise the military, but if you also allow indiscipline to fester, you’ll only be promoting it,” he added.
Mr. Braimah also compared the GAF’s inaction to a recent case involving the Ghana Police Service in which an officer at Ablekuma North was swiftly interdicted for misconduct, noting that such immediate responses restore public confidence in security institutions.
The JoyNews journalist, Carlos Calony, was assaulted by soldiers while covering the aftermath of the demolition exercise, during which an eyewitness was also attacked. The site has since been declared a “National Security Zone.”
His cameraman and an eyewitness were also attacked by the soldiers. The soldiers reportedly destroyed the team’s equipment, leaving the camera badly damaged and the victims with visible injuries.
Mr. Calony was forcibly taken away in a military vehicle to “Blue Gate,” a facility operated by National Security. His phones were seized, and he was subjected to intense interrogation.
He was released only after the intervention of the Minister for the Interior. The government has since condemned the actions of the soldiers, describing the assault as unacceptable.

Patricia Appiagyei presenting the cash to the captain of the team
THE MINORITY in Parliament has donated GH¢100,000 to the Black Queens in recognition of their outstanding performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, where Ghana clinched a bronze medal.
Contributing to a statement on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, praised the senior national women’s football team for their resilience, passion, and determination, which he said had brought honour to the country and renewed national pride in women’s football.
“The Black Queens have not only represented Ghana with dignity but have reignited belief in women’s football. This donation is our way of saying thank you for lifting the flag of Ghana high,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin stated.
The Minority Leader said the gesture symbolised the caucus’s appreciation for the team’s effort and their call for greater attention to be paid to women in sports.
Later at a short ceremony, the Deputy Minority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei, presented the cash donation on behalf of the Minority, stressing the importance of sustained support and investment in women’s sports.
“This is not just about rewarding excellence. It is about reaffirming our belief that female athletes deserve equal recognition and resources to thrive, just like their male counterparts,” she said.
The donation is expected to be shared among the players and technical team, offering some financial relief and motivation as they continue preparations for upcoming international fixtures.
The Black Queens’ podium finish at the 2024 WAFCON marked a major comeback for the team, rekindling hope among Ghanaian football fans after years of underwhelming performances in women’s international competitions.
The Minority Caucus also called on the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to prioritise the development of female football by improving infrastructure, increasing funding, and ensuring parity in bonuses and exposure.

The footage, shared by SegmentoFutbol, shows Caicedo in a quiet and reflective moment, expressing his appreciation for how far he’s come in his career.
The 23-year-old has been enjoying his holidays back in Ecuador after a busy season in which he featured heavily for Chelsea, helping the club to silverware and ending the campaign as one of their standout performers.
Since joining Chelsea from Brighton in 2023 for a British-record transfer fee, Caicedo has cemented his place in the Blues’ midfield and become one of the most important players under manager Enzo Maresca.
He ended the 2024/25 season with a UEFA Conference League winners’ medal and was also part of the squad that lifted the FIFA Club World Cup in July.
With pre-season preparations set to resume in the coming weeks, Caicedo is expected to return to Stamford Bridge refreshed and ready for what promises to be another demanding campaign in Chelsea colours.
