ARISE Integrated Industrial Platforms (ARISE IIP), Africa’s leading industrial zone developer, has committed significant resources to advance Ghana’s 24-hour economy agenda following high-level talks in Benin.

During a visit to ARISE’s Glo-Djigbé Industrial Zone (GDIZ) on August 5, Ghana’s delegation led by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and including Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare explored partnerships to replicate Benin’s integrated industrial model.

ARISE IIP Managing Director Létondji Beheton emphasized alignment with Ghana’s goals: “Our zones operate 24/7, and we’ll deploy skills and resources for Ghana’s economic survival.” The GDIZ, hosting 36 investors and 20,000 jobs, aims for 300,000 positions by 2030. Ghana’s planned light industrial parks will prioritize agro-processing, textiles, and packaging, targeting raw material value-addition and export competitiveness within two years.

Trade Minister Ofosu-Adjare expressed strong enthusiasm: “We’ll double Benin’s achievements to make Ghana Africa’s industrial hub.” The collaboration leverages ARISE’s footprint across five African nations and backing from major financiers like Africa Finance Corporation. This partnership accelerates President Mahama’s vision for industrial transformation through public-private synergy.

Identifying when someone is going through a difficult phase can be challenging, as they may not always recognize it themselves.

Often, it is the people around them who notice changes in behaviour or appearance.

To identify these changes, it is important to look out for things that are out of the ordinary for such a person.

For example, a normally outgoing person who becomes quiet or withdrawn may be struggling with emotional issues.

Also, it is said that changes in appearance, such as shaving one’s hair could also be indicative of underlying emotional trauma.

This is according to Doctor Kwasi Antwi Koranteng who also said in some cases, people may use physical pain as a way to cope with emotional pain.

According to Dr Koranteng, self-harming acts such as tattoos and piercings can be a cry for help.

He said by paying attention to these changes and being aware of the signs, one can offer support and help to those who may be struggling.

According to Dr. Koranteng, It is crucial to approach these situations with empathy and understanding, rather than judgment or indifference.

A Stylish Confidence Boost for Curvy Women

0

When it comes to combining confidence, comfort, and elegance in fashion, crepe fabric short gowns are a winning choice — especially for curvy or chubby ladies seeking flattering outfits that don’t sacrifice style for ease. With its soft texture, subtle stretch, and fluid drape, crepe material is well-loved for its ability to hug the body in the right places while allowing movement and breathability.

“Fashion should be a form of escapism, and not a form of imprisonment.” – Alexander McQueen

This quote holds special meaning for anyone who’s ever struggled to find clothes that both look good and feel great. With crepe short gowns, curvy women don’t have to compromise — these gowns offer both freedom and flair.

1. The A-Line Advantage

The A-line crepe gown is a timeless silhouette that suits a range of body shapes. For fuller figures, it flatters by gently flaring from the waist, creating a balanced look that draws attention to the slimmest part of the body. Unlike stiffer fabrics, crepe doesn’t cling awkwardly — it drapes smoothly, giving a polished, graceful effect. Add ruffled hems or a belted waist for a touch of personality.

2. Off-Shoulder Charm

Want to highlight your neckline while keeping things classy? Off-shoulder crepe gowns are a stylish solution. They frame the shoulders beautifully, elongating the upper body and adding a feminine flair. Whether you’re attending brunch or a cocktail party, this design paired with the softness of crepe fabric offers both all-day comfort and eye-catching appeal.

3. Ruching for a Flattering Fit

Ruching is a stylist’s secret weapon for defining curves. A ruched crepe short gown subtly gathers at the waist or sides, creating texture while drawing the eye to your natural shape. The result? A slimming effect without tightness or discomfort. It’s a great option for both everyday wear and special evenings.

4. Flared and Bell Sleeves for Drama

Sleeve details can transform a simple dress into something spectacular. Flared or bell sleeves in crepe fabric add an element of drama and elegance, while still keeping the outfit light and breathable. This style works particularly well when paired with a more fitted bodice to ensure balance.

5. Pleats That Move With You

Pleats can be both playful and sophisticated. A pleated crepe gown glides over the body, offering structure without being stiff. Perfect for women who love comfort but still want something stylish and chic. It’s a smart, versatile design that fits well in both formal and casual settings.

6. The Power of a V-Neckline

A V-neckline is universally flattering and especially ideal for curvier women. It draws the eye upward and elongates the neck, which can visually slim the upper body. Paired with a well-tailored crepe dress, a V-neck brings a subtle touch of elegance. Complete the look with a delicate pendant or choker.

Final Thoughts: Confidence Starts with Comfort

Crepe short gowns prove that style and comfort can go hand in hand. Whether you love a flowy A-line, a chic off-shoulder cut, or a dress with ruching or pleats, there’s a crepe design that will make you feel confident and beautiful. The fabric’s softness and versatility make it a must-have in any wardrobe — especially for curvy women who want to embrace their shape without compromise.

UN Touts Circular Economy as Solution to Ghana’s Youth Job Crisis

0

Eric Gyenin
Eric Gyenin

Ghana’s transition to a circular economy could dramatically curb youth unemployment while advancing sustainability, according to the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).

Eric Gyenin, UNIDO’s Country Coordinator, positioned the Ghana Circular Economy Centre (GCEC) Project as pivotal to this shift, targeting agriculture, textiles, and plastics sectors.

The five-year GCEC initiative will establish a physical hub anchored by five pillars: a dedicated circular economy center, skills training for youth and women, technical support for circular businesses, financing access, and networking platforms. “This transcends environmental management; it’s economic opportunity,” Gyenin stated. By reintegrating waste into production cycles, the model promises job creation across value chains and supports inclusive, low-carbon industrialization.

With youth unemployment exceeding 20%, the project aligns with Ghana’s development needs. Gyenin linked it to the government’s 24-Hour Economy policy, arguing continuous production demands resource efficiency and innovation inherent to circular systems. “Recycling and reuse enable non-stop economic activity,” he noted, urging private-sector engagement.

The GCEC aims to embed circular practices into national planning, unlock green investment, and generate sustainable jobs. Gyenin called for broader stakeholder awareness, framing the shift as an “economic revolution” with community upliftment potential.

Ban on betting, alcohol promotion affected the comedy industry

OB Amponsah is a popular stand-up Ghanaian OB Amponsah is a popular stand-up Ghanaian

Popular Ghanaian stand-up comedian OB Amponsah had lamented how the ban on celebrities from the promotion of betting and alcohol products by the Food and Drugs Authority has negatively affected the entertainment industry.

Speaking on GhanaWeb’s X Spaces, he argued that the ban, which is said to safeguard children from harmful influence, is inadvertently crippling the country’s once-thriving entertainment sector.

According to OB Amponsah, betting and alcohol companies once played a central role in financing creative events, offering daily sponsorships that energised the industry.

“Day and night, Ghanaians are consuming their product; they have the cash to give out. you don’t ban celebrities from enjoying some of these.

“When the entertainment space was really thriving years back, these companies were major sponsors. But once these bans started, they affected the entertainment industry,” he stated.

According to him, the ban did not only cut off essential funding but also restrict celebrities’ livelihood opportunities by denying them sponsorship deals.

OB Amponsah also criticised the FDA’s rationale that the ban protects children, stating that proper enforcement is needed, not a ban.

“It is about enforcement; you cannot ban celebrities from being sponsored by alcohol brands when you are not enforcing it,” he said.

He cited countries like the UK, where alcohol purchases and betting sign-ups require identity verification.

“In countries like the UK, you cannot log into a betting site without an ID, you cannot buy alcohol without an ID,” he noted.

About the ban

Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority enacted the ban in 2015, forbidding celebrities from endorsing alcoholic beverages in advertisements or sponsorship deals.

The policy, enshrined under its Guideline 3.2.10, has been justified as a measure to shield minors from celebrity-influenced alcohol marketing.

In 2023, music executive Mark Darlington Osae contested the constitutionality of the ban, labelling it as discriminatory and harmful to creative professionals. In June 2024, the Supreme Court upheld FDA’s decision.

Elegant Kaftan Styles Mothers Can Wear To Look Classy

0

Kaftans have remained a timeless favorite in women’s fashion, particularly for mothers who prioritize both style and comfort. These flowing garments offer an elegant yet relaxed look, making them perfect for a variety of occasions — from religious events and weddings to family outings and casual get-togethers. Their versatility and grace make them an essential piece in every stylish mother’s wardrobe.

What sets kaftans apart is their ability to combine sophistication with ease. Fabrics like silk, satin, chiffon, and high-quality Ankara add a luxurious touch to the overall appearance. For a truly polished look, choose kaftans adorned with embellishments such as beadwork, embroidery, sequins, or rhinestones — especially around the neckline, cuffs, or hem. These details elevate a simple kaftan into a regal ensemble.

Color choice also plays a key role. Earthy tones like beige, olive, and champagne exude calm sophistication, while bolder shades like emerald, burgundy, and sapphire can make a powerful style statement. Cultural patterns or symbolic prints can also add a layer of meaning and personal identity to the outfit.

Modern mothers can style their kaftans with elegant accessories — think chandelier earrings, structured handbags, and stylish flat sandals or block heels. Belted styles are especially trendy, as they define the waistline while maintaining comfort. A sleek ponytail or low bun completes the look effortlessly.

Kaftans are not just fashionable — they’re also practical. Their loose, breathable design makes them suitable for all body types, especially for women who are constantly on the move.

In a fashion world full of fleeting trends, the kaftan stands out as a timeless, adaptable, and flattering piece. With the right styling, every mother can step out in confidence, radiating poise and charm in this classic ensemble.

Kwaku Manu (R) says God asked him to give Adwoa Smart (L) a plot of land Kwaku Manu (R) says God asked him to give Adwoa Smart (L) a plot of land

Kumawood actor, Kwaku Manu, has explained his reason for gifting veteran actress Adwoa Smart a plot of land.

In a video shared on social media on August 6, 2025, Kwaku Manu said he gifted the actress a land out of goodwill and also for her contribution to the movie industry.

He explained that, prior to this development, Adwoa Smart had earlier informed him about a land and the fact that she needed assistance with putting up a building on it.

According to Kwaku Manu, he wasn’t satisfied with the location of the actress’ land, hence prompting his decision to gift her a plot of land.

“Before we started the interview, she informed me about her land in Dodowa. We went to have a look at it. When I got there, the land was in a marshy area. And it wouldn’t be appropriate for me to plead with Ghanaians to support her to build at that place.

“I told her I had a land in Amasaman satellite and if she is interested. I would gift it to her. When we got there, she was happy with the location,” he said.

The actor added that he would like to assist the actress by building a two-bedroom house on the land.

“God is the one who asked me to gift her the land. I didn’t have it in mind to gift her the land. But based on what she said. That prompted me to do that.

“After the interview, I did a TikTok live asking Ghanaians to assist me so I can build a two-bedroom for her,” he added.

The Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, has expressed profound grief over the tragic death of his cousin, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, the late Minister of Defence, who perished in a helicopter crash on Wednesday.

The crash, which occurred at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region, claimed the lives of eight individuals, including key government officials.

In an emotional post on social media, Dr Afriye shared heartfelt memories of his bond with Dr Omane Boamah, describing their journey from childhood to university and beyond.

“My cousin I will see no more. My heart is deeply troubled. Life, oh Life! Kofi, we made it together from home to Uni. We kept our bond from the 90s,” he wrote.

He recalled their time at the University of Ghana, where they maintained a close relationship despite Dr Omane Boamah residing at Okponglo while frequently visiting Dr Afriye at Commonwealth Hall.

“In med school at Korle Bu, the scores were settled when we were allocated one room, and we bonded in room B63. Politics has never separated us after school. Rita! My heart bleeds heavily for you and family… a life we live on earth… OMG! I am in pain! I am down… how do I control these tears,” he wrote.

Dr Afriye revealed that he learned of the tragedy while abroad, through a call from the chief editor of an opposition newspaper whom Dr Omane Boamah had previously assisted with medical treatment in the United States.

“Doc, have you heard the news? … Your brother had a crash,” the editor informed him, prompting Dr. Afriye to check GhanaWeb, where he confirmed the devastating news.

“OMG!! I can’t control my tears. I am deeply saddened… Kofi! Kofi! Kofi! Demrefa dui… awww! Lord have mercy!!” the Ranking Member wrote.

A little after midday on Wednesday, the Ghana Armed Forces issued a statement indicating that a helicopter headed for Obuasi had gone off radar, with efforts underway to locate the missing aircraft.

“A GAF helicopter, Z9, that took off this morning at 0912hrs from Accra and headed for Obuasi is currently off the radar. All efforts are being made to establish contact. On board were three crew members and five passengers. Further details will be communicated soon,” the statement said.

The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, confirmed the deaths of the eight persons in a short briefing at the Jubilee House.

He confirmed that the victims lost their lives in the helicopter crash that occurred at Adansi Akrofuom in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

TCDA targets $16 billion revenue by 2028, seeks transformative development

The Tree Crop Development Authority (TCDA) in a bold move to propel economic growth has set an ambitious target of generating $16 billion in revenue by 2028, focusing on six strategic tree crops that promise significant economic potential.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of TCDA, Dr Andrews Osei Okrah, an existing strategy on the potential of each crop’s revenue generation is $2 billion annually, therefore the 2028 target is achievable.

Dr Okrah indicated that the six crops represent a powerful engine for economic growth, rural development and export diversification.

“By 2028, we aim to generate significant exchange revenue of $16 billion. If we consider the potential of six key crops, we can project that with adequate investment today, we could achieve on average $2 billion annually from each crop. When we multiply that by six, we are looking at a total of $12 billion,” he said.

Speaking at the Center for Applied Research and Innovation in Supply Chain-Africa’s (CARISCA) supply chain forum and exhibition in Accra, the CEO mentioned that the future of Ghana’s tree crop supply chain landscape will not be complete without highlighting the central and the transformative role of the Tree Crop Development Authority.

He added that the strength of tree crop supply chains will determine how inclusive, competitive and sustainable the future will be.

“The ability to effectively finance the potential of Ghana’s tree crop sector depends on appreciating the supply chain landscape in full complexity. The tree crop value chain is not linear. It is a vibrant and multi stakeholder ecosystem with several interdependent roles.”

Established through a 2019 parliamentary act, the TCDA is responsible for developing and coordinating cashew, oil palm, rubber, coconut, mango, and shea. He noted that the Authority is more than a regulatory body but a strategic anchor in a new era in agricultural industrialisation.

The sector primarily relies on smallholder farmers managing less than two hectares of land, forming the backbone of a complex agricultural value chain that includes input suppliers, aggregators, processors, and exporters.

With all the steps being taken by the Authority to drive growth and development, Dr Okrah highlighted some key challenges within the sector which he calls for stakeholders within the value chain to contribute towards resolving those hurdles.

Key among the challenges facing the sector include extensive infrastructure deficits, limited access to financial resources, post-harvest losses, inadequate transportation and storage facilities, among others

Currently, the TCDA is collaborating with the World Bank on a development project aimed at increasing productivity in coconut, rubber, and cashew production. The authority is also working to streamline business licensing, promote investments, and facilitate private sector participation.

The TCDA emphasizes a comprehensive approach to agricultural development, calling on stakeholders to “think big” and consider large-scale investments similar to successful agricultural transformations in countries like Malaysia.

“The HIV is normally cause by having unprotected sex with an infected person, sharing needles or syringes with an infected person, mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding and blood transfusions from an infected donor and others”

Madam Kugbonu outline preventive methods which include practicing safe sex (using condoms) getting tested for HIV regularly, avoiding sharing needles or syringes, using pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) or post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) as needed, ensuring safe blood transfusions, among others.

She explained that HIV could affect anyone, regardless of age, sex, or background while certain groups such as young people (15-24 years old), Sex workers, men who have sex with men (gays), people who inject drugs, people living in areas with high HIV prevalence would be disproportionately affected.

Meanwhile, the recent surge in HIV cases in Keta Municipality has sparked concern among the public with many demanding for increased awareness and education on HIV prevention and treatment methods which were important needs for targeted interventions to address the epidemic, particularly among vulnerable populations.

Mr. Dela Simon Kwakuvi, a resident of Keta told the Ghana News Agency, that the HIV epidemic reported in Keta Municipality was a pressing public health concern that required a comprehensive response.

He appealed to health workers to create awareness for the public to understand the causes, effects, symptoms and modes of transmission to prevent new infections and as well as provide support to those living with HIV.

He said that it was essential to promote awareness, education, and access to HIV testing and treatment services to combat the epidemic to alleviate the fear and stigma among the public.

Governor Of The Bank Of Ghana Dr Johnson Asiamah

Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama has challenged commercial banks to pivot sharply from “risk-free” government securities toward financing productive private enterprises, calling current credit allocation “a dangerous imbalance.”

Speaking at the launch of the BoG Chair in Finance and Economics at the University of Ghana, Asiama revealed banks held GH¢162.92 billion in government and central bank securities as of June 2025 nearly double their GH¢89.16 billion loan portfolio to businesses.

“This skew crowds out private credit and weakens monetary policy transmission,” he warned, citing a regional trend where banks’ government debt holdings surged from 20% of credit assets in 2010 to over 35% in 2023. Asiama linked this to stagnant private sector growth despite macroeconomic improvements, including the cedi’s 42% year-to-date appreciation and reserves exceeding $11 billion. He urged lenders to target SMEs, agriculture, and manufacturing, stressing: “Our banking sector must become a catalyst for growth.”

The Governor tied Ghana’s economic rebound to disciplined fiscal-monetary coordination under the IMF program but emphasized that sustained recovery requires banks to “re-evaluate business models.” His remarks coincided with the inauguration of Prof. Yegandi Imhotep Paul Alagidede as the BoG Chair, who proposed anchoring the cedi’s value by backing 30% with natural resources. “Pass the Endogenous Resource-Backed Currency Act,” Alagidede urged lawmakers, advocating blockchain-monitored “District Reserve Vaults” and citizen “Grow Your Currency” bonds. “No more begging. No more borrowing.”

I wish I never took that picture with my son

Ghanaian actress Hajia Haniya Rosemond Alade Brown, popularly referred to as Akuapem Poloo, has stated her biggest regret is taking the controversial photo with her son that led to her arrest and imprisonment.

In an interview on AsaasePa FM, Akuapem Poloo described the incident as her biggest regret.

The actress was sentenced in 2021 after posting a nude photo of herself standing next to her son on social media.

“I wish I didn’t take that picture with my son. That is my only regret. Out of pain and everything I have been through raising my son all by myself, and I am still going through it,” she said.

Akuapem Poloo explained that people misunderstood the reason behind the photo. According to her, the caption she wrote under the post would have given a better understanding of her intention.

She said the message behind the photo was to show the struggles of being a single mother and the unconditional bond between her and her son.

“That is how naked I came into this world and that is how I am raising him. If he turns out well in future, after I have spent all my money on him, and sees me on the street mentally unstable, he should cover me and take me home,” she said.

The actress noted that the post was never meant to seek attention or fame.

“It was a personal expression of my struggle as a single mother,” she explained.

Akuapem Poloo also talked about her time in prison and how it changed her life, mentioning that she won’t even wish that on her worst enemy.

“I would not wish jail on even my worst enemy. It takes your freedom away mentally,” she stated.

Now a mother of two after welcoming a baby girl, the actress said the experience has made her more intentional about her life and decisions.

She disclosed that she will never share photos of her daughter on social media because the experience taught her the importance of privacy, especially when it comes to her children.

The commendation came during a high-level courtesy call by the Governor and members of the Bank’s Executive Management Team to the Yagbonwura. The visit forms part of a broader stakeholder engagement drive ahead of the official launch of the Cedi@60 celebrations scheduled for 8th August 2025.

‘You are playing a ‘sakora’ league but want a third term’

George Afriyie has criticised the current administration of GFA George Afriyie has criticised the current administration of GFA

Former vice president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has criticised the current administration of the GFA in the way they are handling the league.

Afriyie’s comments come in the wake of a controversial proposal from the GFA’s statutes review committee, which seeks to extend the presidential term limit from two to three terms

Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM on August 6, 2025. Afriyie described the Ghana Premier League as a ‘sakora’ league.

“You are playing a league that’s a sakora league, it’s difficult for your number one product, which is the Ghana Premier League to attract partnership,” he said.

The former vice president also stated that the government had to intervene to save the league due to their campaign promises.

“It had to take government to put in money because it was a campaign promise from the two political parties and is being fulfilled,” he added.

The proposal of the GFA to have a third term in office is expected to be a major talking point at the GFA’s 31st Ordinary congress, scheduled for Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at the Ghanaian soccer center of Excellence in Prampram.

Ghana can’t afford to descend into ethnic or partisan trenches- Governance Expert

0

By Morkporkpor Anku

Accra, Aug. 6, GNA- Dr Akwasi Opong-Fosu, Governance and Public Policy Analyst, says Ghana cannot afford to descend into ethnic or partisan trenches.

He said leadership must rise above tribalism and parochialism and national identity must trump party, religion, or ethnicity.

Dr Opong-Fosu was speaking at the Crossfire Governance and Leadership Public Lectures Series in Accra.

The event was on the theme: “Conversation on Resetting the Nation.”

He said the Reset Agenda, as articulated and led by President John Dramani Mahama, was now a national project.

It is aimed at the renewal of institutions, restoration of values, belief systems, and citizen engagement.

He said the Agenda was a deliberate shift from a broken status quo toward a people-centred, ethical, and developmental state.

The Governance Expert said Ghana needed visionary leaders with integrity, conviction, and compassion in the public space, including political, traditional, religious, business, and civil society to transform the nation.

He said governments must engage, listen, and act, adding that the Reset had called for open and accountable government, decentralisation of power, and economic policy design shaped by citizens’ realities.

“We called for a neutral, efficient, and accountable public sector free from political manipulation and grounded in performance and integrity,” he added.

He said it must include reform of procurement, political financing, asset declaration, and strong enforcement mechanisms.

Dr Opong-Fosu said economic policies must empower the poor, support the vulnerable, and promote broad-based wealth creation.

He said division based on ethnicity and partisanship had torn the country’s fabric and the Reset must embrace equity, fairness, and unity as its moral and strategic compass.

He said education must cultivate civic-minded, creative, and critical-thinking citizens and the curricula should reflect the country’s development needs and national identity.

“I have proposed a National Institutional Renewal Commission (NIRC) designed to restructure and revitalize state institutions, unethical conduct, and restore trust,” he added.

Dr Opong-Fosu said the government and citizens must co-author a new compact anchored in rights, duties, transparency, and accountability, and “we cannot reset Ghana without independent watchdogs.”

The Governance Expert said the media and civil society must be guardians of accountability not accomplices of self-serving leadership and politics of individualism, materialism, and impunity.

Licences of four trawlers suspended for regulatory violations – Fisheries Minister

0

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Emelia Arthur, has announced the suspension of licences for four industrial trawlers following multiple regulatory breaches.

The suspension forms part of ongoing enforcement efforts by the Ministry to ensure compliance within the fishing industry and protect Ghana’s marine resources.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, August 6, the Minister stated, “We have suspended licences of four trawlers for multiple regulatory violations.”

She explained that the operation was led by the Fisheries Enforcement Unit (FEU), which comprises the Ghana Navy, the Marine Police, and local community-based enforcement committees.

According to the Minister, the FEU continues to conduct routine monitoring and enforcement exercises across key fishing zones to clamp down on illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities.

The Ministry has pledged to sustain enforcement actions as part of broader reforms to ensure sustainable fishing practices, protect the livelihoods of artisanal fishers, and preserve Ghana’s marine ecosystem.

CERPA Spotlights Cautious Gains in Mid-Year Budget Review

0

Budget
Budget

The Finance Minister presented the Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review for the 2025 budget to Parliament on July 24, 2025, underpinned by stronger-than-expected GDP growth and an impressive drop in inflation.

The Centre for Economic Research and Policy Analysis (CERPA) offers an independent assessment, acknowledging progress while flagging areas demanding swift corrective action.

CERPA notes that real GDP growth of 5.3 percent in Q1 2025 outpaced the year’s 4.0 percent target, driven by a 6.8 percent expansion in the non-oil sector. Consumer price inflation fell to 13.7 percent by mid-year, down from 23.8 percent at end-2024, reflecting tighter monetary policy and robust external reserves. The cedi’s 42.6 percent appreciation against the dollar has bolstered debt sustainability but may mask exchange-rate sensitivities should the currency weaken.

On fiscal metrics, the government recorded a 1.1 percent primary surplus on a commitment basis by June, outperforming the 0.4 percent target, while the overall deficit narrowed from an expected 1.8 percent to 0.7 percent. Total revenue and grants of GH¢99.3 billion fell slightly short of the GH¢102.6 billion target, but capital spending lagged markedly, with only GH¢7.1 billion disbursed against an GH¢18.1 billion ambition. CERPA warns that under-execution of development projects could dampen growth and job creation unless capital budgets are realigned and execution capacity strengthened.

Public debt stock declined by GH¢113.7 billion to GH¢613 billion between December 2024 and June 2025, cutting the debt-to-GDP ratio from 61.8 to 43.8 percent. CERPA welcomes this improvement, attributing it partly to external debt restructuring and lower domestic borrowing costs, but cautions that exchange-rate-driven gains may be reversible. The group urges the government to outline a clear exit strategy from the Debt Restructuring Programme to guard against resurgence in leverage.

Reforms by the Ghana Gold Board have yielded record small-scale gold exports valued at US$5 billion, strengthening reserves and stabilising the cedi. Initiatives like the One Million Coders programme and the newly passed Medical Trust Fund bill also show promise, yet CERPA highlights implementation risks: the Trust Fund was enacted without a required fiscal impact analysis, and digital skills training must be scaled sustainably. The recapitalisation of the National Investment Bank has restored its capital adequacy but will need rigorous governance to ensure it finances development projects rather than merely retail banking.

CERPA concludes that while mid-year indicators signal a tentative return to fiscal discipline and macroeconomic stability, the real test will lie in sustaining capital investment, transparently managing new funds, and embedding reforms that resist future shocks. Only through disciplined public financial management, robust project execution, and clear policy exit plans can Ghana translate these early gains into durable shared prosperity.

Private sector hospitals deserve more support, GHS Director reminds government

0

The Greater Accra Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Robert Amesiya, has called on the government to invest more resources in private health institutions that are committed to delivering quality and affordable healthcare.

He said institutions like Midway Hospital, which bear their own operational costs yet continue to expand and offer specialised services, deserve more support to help the nation achieve universal health coverage.

Dr. Amesiya made the remarks at the 45th anniversary celebration of Midway Hospital, held in Accra. The event was themed “Honouring a legacy, advancing a vision: 45 years of transforming lives,” and featured the unveiling of a bust in memory of the hospital’s founder, Dr. Joseph Ameni Quarshie.

The GHS Director commended the hospital for its resilience, growth, and partnership with public health institutions.

He noted that while public health facilities often struggle despite government support, Midway Hospital had made remarkable progress through efficient leadership, strong values, and strategic planning.

He added that it was refreshing to see patients share positive stories about the hospital’s care, something rarely heard in Ghana’s health sector, and described it as a good example for other facilities to emulate.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, several community-focused activities have been lined up: 6th August 2025 – Free NHIS registration for residents of Okaikoi North and surrounding areas at the Church of Pentecost, Abofu Worship Centre (All day); 10th August 2025 – Staff Thanksgiving Service at Bethany Methodist Church, Dzorwulu (9:00 AM);
All Year – Free Corporate & School Health Education (Online and On-site).

Dr. Amesiya urged stakeholders to consider policies that empower well-performing private health providers to complement the public sector and close the healthcare access gap.

“Not every private hospital can boast of such success, but for what Midway has achieved, they deserve a lot of support,” he said.

He used the opportunity to commend the hospital’s leadership and expressed hope that in five years, Midway would have achieved even greater milestones.

The Medical Director of Midway Hospital, Dr. Gifty Quarshie-Ngissah, paid tribute to the hospital’s founder, Dr. Joseph Ameni Quarshie, describing him as a visionary leader whose legacy continues to inspire their work.

She said the hospital was founded on the principles of excellence, dignity, and patient-centred care, and those values guided the team to remain resilient through various challenges over the decades.

Dr. Quarshie-Ngissah announced that the hospital had undergone major improvements in the last five years, including the introduction of dialysis, advanced orthopaedics, endoscopy, fertility services, and a new emergency unit.

She also highlighted the hospital’s recent achievement of full accreditation as a private hospital and its recognition as a customer service leader with a 98 percent satisfaction rating in 2024.

She outlined activities to mark the 45th anniversary, including a free National Health Insurance registration for residents of Okaikoi North on August 6, a staff thanksgiving service on August 10, and year-long corporate and school health education sessions.

She thanked all partners, staff, and patients for their continued trust and support, promising even greater improvements in the years ahead.

The Board Chairperson of Zenith Bank Ghana and the Chairperson for the occasion, Mrs. Freda Yahan Duplan, described Midway Hospital as a beacon of hope and a testimony of what can be achieved through faith, discipline, and hard work.

According to her, the vision of the founder had grown beyond a family legacy into a national asset serving people from all walks of life.

Mrs. Duplan called on corporate Ghana and other stakeholders to support health institutions like Midway to enable them to scale their impact.

She encouraged the business community to pay attention to healthcare, not only as a corporate social responsibility but as an investment in human capital and national development.

She commended the hospital’s efforts in bringing innovative services to ordinary Ghanaians.

She encouraged the current leadership of the hospital to remain true to its founding values while embracing new technologies and strategies that can enhance service delivery.

According to her, as Ghana prepares for the future of healthcare, it was imperative for private institutions like Midway to partake in national conversation and be given a seat at the table in policy decisions.

About the Founder

Dr. Joseph Ameni Quarshie (1938–2020), the founder of Midway Hospital, was known for his compassion, discipline, and dedication to quality healthcare. An obstetrician-gynaecologist trained in Germany through a program initiated by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, he returned to Ghana in 1970 and began a life of service.

He established Midway Hospital in 1980 with the aim of providing dignified care, especially to underserved communities. Inspired by the Mayo Clinic, he envisioned a private facility that would deliver both basic and specialised services under one roof in Ghana.

Though he passed away in 2020, his legacy continues through the hospital’s commitment to patient-centred care and excellence. Dr. Quarshie is remembered not just for founding a medical facility but for shaping a compassionate culture of service that endures.

Midway Hospital’s Journey

Founded in 1980 as a modest clinic in Abeka Junction, Midway Hospital grew steadily through the commitment of Dr. Quarshie, his family, and a loyal team. The hospital relocated to its current premises in 1988 and has since become known for its warm, family-like atmosphere and dignified service.

Supported by his wife, Mrs. Alice Quarshie, the founder created a facility that valued both staff and patients. The strong values at the core of Midway’s operations have shaped the hospital into a dependable healthcare institution that continues to expand its impact.

Five Years of Transformation

Since 2020, Midway Hospital has undergone major changes under a new generation of leadership, driven by the founder’s vision. The hospital attained full accreditation in 2022, modernised nearly all clinical units, and introduced several new specialised services.

Major upgrades include a renovated maternity suite, emergency unit, and surgical theatres, as well as a standalone radiology and ultrasound unit. The hospital has also established a full-service eye and optical centre, a dental unit, and an expanded dialysis unit. Advanced fertility and orthopaedic services, including intrauterine insemination and complex surgeries, have also been added.

The hospital has grown its outpatient offerings, improved home care services, and expanded its partnerships with corporate clients and insurance providers. Staff development was prioritised, with management and clinical teams receiving advanced training, including participation in international programs such as the Stanford SEED Transformation Program. In 2024, Midway was named Customer Service Leader in Ghana’s healthcare sector with a 98 percent satisfaction score.

As Midway celebrates 45 years, it remains committed to deepening its partnerships and advancing its founder’s dream of a full-service quaternary hospital that serves with compassion, excellence, and dignity.
