Chakwera faces ‘Wantam’ moment in Malawi

0

Lazarus Chakwera rose to power in Malawi dramatically five years ago after winning a court-ordered repeat election. But those the former preacher beat in the poll have ramped up their campaigns to pose the biggest challenge to his re-election bid.

Now, the talk of the town is whether the twanging cleric will face a ‘Wantam’ moment, a corrupted phrase meaning ‘one term’ that is mainly used by Kenyans politics to refer to politicians who struggle to win back their seats.

In Malawi, the presidential elections are scheduled for September 16, with Chakwera facing two former presidents and his own deputy in polls where the economy has taken centre stage.

In June 2020, Chakwera made history when he defeated incumbent Peter Mutharika with 58.57 percent of the vote after the courts ordered a repeat of the presidential election held a year earlier, citing vote tampering.

The 70-year-old former pastor’s first term in office, however, has been marred by corruption scandals, economic malaise characterised by foreign currency and fuel shortages, as well as food deficits attributed to natural disasters.

Some observers and opinion polls are placing the man he defeated in the last polls, Prof Mutharika, 85, ahead of him with elections about a month away.

According to the latest survey by the Institute of Public Opinion and Research (Ipor) conducted between July 6 and 20, the former president and his opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) are likely to get 43 percent of the vote while the incumbent and the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) could get 26 percent.

The Ipor poll shows that no candidate is likely to meet the 50 percent-plus-one vote threshold to avoid a second round of voting. But this poll is consistent with others in the past year, in which President Chakwera has been faring poorly.

Michael Chasukwa, Ipor director for training and research, said the outcome of the opinion polls showed that the election will be issue-based, as shown by the majority’s strong desire to give Prof Mutharika a chance despite his advanced age.

On the campaign trail, Mutharika who led his country from 2014 to 2020, has been pledging to “rescue” the country from political and economic hardship.

“What is most striking is Peter Mutharika’s strong showing among young voters, with 50 percent of those aged 18 to 35 saying they support him,” Prof Chasukwa said. “This suggests that concerns about his age may not be translating into lost support among the youth.”

Another formidable challenge is Malawi’s first female president Joyce Banda.

Dr Banda, 74, an educator and women’s rights activist, became president in 2012, stepping up from vice-president after the death of then incumbent Bingu wa Mutharika, Peter Mutharika’s brother.

She launched this year’s campaign on August 3 in the central town of Ntcheu, where she pledged to prioritise youth empowerment and job creation, a direct appeal to the constituency of young people who feel disillusioned by the president’s handling of the economy.

President Chakwera’s deputy Michael Usi also entered the race this week after submitting his nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

Mr Usi, who became vice-president last year after the death of Saulos Chilima in a plane crash, will represent the newly formed Odya Zake-Alibe Mlandum party, which was formed by rebels from UTM party, a member of the governing coalition.

On Tuesday, MEC said 17 candidates had been cleared for the presidential race.

Despite the odds stacked against him, President Chakwera insists that his re-election is not in doubt.

Mr Chakwera told his supporters at the launch of his re-election campaign on July 26 in the Southern Region that the Malawi Congress Party has strong structures on the ground and “my leadership is providing solutions to the national development gaps”.

“I have confidence that I still have your support to continue with the development projects,” he said.

Political analysts say the economy is at the heart of this year’s election, with voters increasingly becoming concerned about fuel shortages, currency volatility and rising inflation.

The country’s agriculture-based economy has become vulnerable to climate-induced disasters such as floods and droughts.

President Chakwera’s administration has been forced to introduce austerity measures, such as banning foreign travel for the President and his Cabinet, and rationing foreign currency. But these have has done little to provide relief to the economy, leading to widespread protests.

The government has also been accused of not doing enough to fight corruption despite a string of high-profile arrests and the dismissal of government ministers implicated in the vice.

Taz Chaponda, a former senior economist at the International Monetary Fund, said that going into the polls, Malawians would be worried about long and frequent fuel queues “snaking for kilometres”, rising prices, particularly for food, and dwindling foreign currency reserves resulting in widespread forex shortages.

Mr Chaponda said there were also widespread concerns about rising public debt driven by unsustainable borrowing, one of Africa’s highest fiscal deficits, low food reserves and continued electricity shortages, among other pressing economic problems.

“As with all elections, this one is supposed to usher in changes and make a difference or at least that is what all parties are promising,” he said. “But voters must be aware that the electoral outcome will not suddenly change the fast deteriorating state of our fragile economy.”

Malawi is ranked 174th out of 189 in the United Nations’ Human Development Index.

About three quarters of Malawi’s population of 21 million lives in extreme poverty, according to the World Bank.

More than 80 percent of its workforce is employed in the agriculture sector.

Malawi first held free elections 30 years ago after the death of long-time ruler Kamuzu Banda.

The country’s recent elections have been marred by allegations of vote rigging, but a 2019 Constitutional Court ruling was the first time the courts annulled results of a presidential election.

Ahead of the September 16 vote, human rights organisations have also been expressing fears of violence after a group of weapon-wielding men on June 26 attacked demonstrators that were protesting against the government’s handling of preparations for the elections.

Members of the Citizens for Credible Elections, a local NGO, took to the streets of the capital Lilongwe to call for an independent audit of the voters’ roll and the resignation of top MEC officials.

As the protests were going on, the group of men – some wearing masks and carrying sticks, heavy leather whips and large knives – attacked the demonstrators, injuring several of them, Human Rights Watch said.

The main opposition DPP party and civil society organisations claimed that the attackers had links to a youth militia aligned with the ruling MCP.

They accused the MCP of using fear and intimidation against citizens expressing themselves in the lead up to the crucial elections.

We tried to save them, but it was too late – Eyewitness recounts helicopter crash [Audio]

0

A local farmer, identified as Mr. Apenteng, has shared a deeply emotional account of the tragic military helicopter crash that killed eight individuals, including two government ministers, near his farm in the Ashanti Region.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Apenteng described the anguish of witnessing the aftermath of the crash, which occurred in a remote forested area bordering his farmland.

He explained that he was among the first to be alerted after the aircraft went down. Without hesitation, he and a group of others rushed through the dense forest in hopes of offering help.

But their efforts were hindered by difficult terrain, including thick vegetation, rocky outcrops, and a deep gully that made access extremely challenging.

“That place is not somewhere you’d go unless something serious happened. When we finally reached the site, it was already too late. The damage was beyond what we could handle,” he said.

Mr. Apenteng recalled the heart-wrenching realization that even if any of the victims had survived the crash, rescuers would still have struggled to reach them in time due to the isolation of the location.

Describing the emotional toll, he said, “I’ve felt pain before—when I lost my mother and a sibling—but what I saw shook me more than anything else. I’ve never even witnessed a car accident before. After leaving the scene, I had to drink alcohol just to settle my nerves.”

In a moment of solemn reflection, he revealed that he took a fragment of the wreckage home—not as a souvenir, but as a cautionary symbol.

“I want to keep it as a reminder, to tell my children and family what happened there. If any of them ever dreams of becoming a pilot, I will show them this and tell them to think again.”

Mr. Apenteng admitted that the tragedy has left deep psychological scars, stating he is unsure whether he will ever fully recover.

He further revealed that he provided about 10 sacks, which were used to pack the remains of the victims.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, August 6, while the aircraft was en route from Accra to Obuasi, claimed the lives of all on board, including Ghana’s Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and Minister for Environment, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

Helicopter crash: Stop circulating gory images

0

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of five senior government officials and three military crew members on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

In a statement issued on Thursday, August 7, the GJA extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, President John Dramani Mahama and the Ghana Armed Forces.

The association described the incident as a devastating national loss, and called on media houses and the public to stop circulating gory images from the crash site.

The victims of the crash include Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, former Parliamentary Candidate Samuel Aboagye, and NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong.

Also perished were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, who were operating the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter.

According to initial reports, the aircraft was en route to Obuasi when it went off radar, leading to a crash that has plunged the country into mourning. The bodies have since been retrieved and transported to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.

President Mahama has declared three days of national mourning, beginning Thursday, August 7, as the nation pays tribute to the fallen statesmen and service members. The officials were reportedly on a mission to address illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey, a major national concern.

The GJA emphasised that the deceased were gallant public servants who died while pursuing a case in service to the nation, calling on journalists and media houses to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, sensitivity, and ethical conduct in their coverage of the incident.

“We must honour the memory of the departed by treating this incident with the dignity and respect the deceased deserve,” the GJA urged, adding that the circulation of gory images of the crash scene is “highly insensitive” and a breach of journalistic ethics.

The association specifically appealed to practitioners across both traditional and new media, as well as the public, to refrain from sharing graphic content, noting that such actions only worsen the trauma of grieving families and undermine the national healing process.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) has called for an independent and transparent investigation into the cause of the crash, as pressure mounts for accountability and clarity on the incident.

President Mahama has also directed the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to assume additional responsibility as Minister for Defence with immediate effect.

Similarly, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah, has been appointed to act as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology until further notice.

Decent Styles Arewa Ladies Can Add To Their Collection

0

Arewa women have long celebrated their cultural heritage through fashion, and one of the most iconic elements of this expression is the use of Ankara fabric. Renowned for its vivid patterns and rich colors, Ankara serves not just as a material but as a symbol of identity, pride, and timeless beauty. In Northern Nigeria, this fabric holds a unique place in women’s wardrobes, merging traditional values with evolving fashion trends.

Among the most beloved styles is the Boubou gown—a flowing, free-size garment that effortlessly exudes grace and modesty. Its airy silhouette makes it suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions. Modern variations often include sophisticated touches such as lace trimmings, intricate embroidery, sequins, and beadwork. These enhancements bring a touch of glamour while maintaining the traditional essence of Arewa fashion.

The Kaftan, another timeless choice, is equally popular. Often designed with a regal feel and loose-fitting comfort, Ankara Kaftans radiate elegance. Whether worn at formal ceremonies or family events, these garments balance modesty with fashion in a way that respects cultural norms.

Peplum tops made from Ankara have also become a modern favorite. Designed to flatter a range of body shapes, they are typically worn with pencil skirts or neatly tailored pants. These tops are ideal for weddings, religious events, or even professional settings, offering both style and modesty.

Ankara maxi skirts further enhance the versatile wardrobe of the Arewa woman. Paired with either matching tops or simple blouses, they are perfect for a variety of occasions—from weekend outings to community gatherings.

Through these styles, Arewa women beautifully express their heritage while embracing modern trends. Each outfit tells a story of dignity, creativity, and the elegance found in cultural authenticity.

Media must uphold dignity in reporting helicopter crash – Shamima Muslim

0

The Deputy Government Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim, has appealed to the media for dignified and respectful coverage of the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two cabinet ministers, on Wednesday, August 6.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, August 7, 2025,  Madam Muslim acknowledged the media’s critical role in informing the public but urged restraint in the use of graphic visuals, out of respect for the deceased and their families.

“We pray that the media continue to do a dignified coverage of the disaster,” she said.

“We have pleaded for platforms to delete the harrowing visuals from various networks so that we can provide dignified coverage and still balance the need for the public to know what happened, respecting the family and their spouses.”

Ms. Muslim stressed the need to avoid the circulation of distressing images, particularly those captured shortly after the crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

In the same interview, she disclosed that the government has formed a planning committee to oversee the funeral and burial arrangements of the deceased.

“We will communicate in real time the various actions that we are going to be taking,” she noted. “It is safe to say that we are all doing what it takes to ease the pain for the families, the government, and put in place all the necessary plans.”

She added that the planning committee is working to ensure a smooth and solemn process for honouring the victims.

“There is a planning committee at work to ensure a smooth process towards what should be a very simple process,” she said.

The crash, which claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and six others, has prompted a wave of national mourning, with flags flying at half-mast and tributes pouring in from across Ghana and the international community.

Banking industry mourns victims of tragic helicopter crash

0

Ghana’s banking sector is joining the rest of the nation in mourning the devastating loss of eight lives, including two Cabinet Ministers in a military helicopter crash that occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

In a solemn statement, the Ghana Association of Banks (GAB) extended its condolences to the bereaved families, the Government of Ghana, and all institutions affected by what it described as a “national tragedy.”

The victims included Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence, and Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, both of whom were widely regarded for their contributions to public service and national development.

“The Ghanaian banking industry stands with the nation in mourning the tragic loss of distinguished public servants and professionals,” the Association said in its tribute.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, the Government of Ghana, and all institutions affected by this national tragedy. May their souls rest in perfect peace.”

The tragedy has cast a shadow over both the public and private sectors, with scheduled national events postponed in observance of the period of mourning.

Helicopter Crash: Muslim burial suspended due to condition of remains

0

Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, has disclosed that initial burial plans for the victims of Wednesday’s military helicopter crash, who were Muslims, have been suspended due to the condition of the bodies.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, August 7, 2025, Suhuyini explained that earlier plans had been made to bury the Muslim victims in line with Islamic tradition, which calls for swift burial, usually within 24 hours.

However, upon assessment of the remains, it became evident that immediate burial would not be feasible.

“The information earlier was that, because of Islamic tradition, the Muslims among them were to be buried today. I am sure those decisions were taken before the actual state of the remains was determined,” he said.

“When that was done, it was clear to all that it was going to be practically impossible to carry out any burial today. So, those who had to be communicated to were quickly informed last night, and arrangements were suspended until further notice, or until some examinations are done before new dates are communicated,” Suhuyini added.

The crash, which occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, claimed the lives of eight people, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and other senior officials and military personnel.

The government has since formed a funeral planning committee to coordinate the burial and memorial arrangements. National flags continue to fly at half-mast as the country mourns the devastating loss.

Describing the tragedy as a “huge loss,” Suhuyini also paid tribute to the fallen officials.

“A gap has been created, and these comrades that have fallen, I dare say, are irreplaceable,” he said. “I cannot just imagine what everybody who knew them personally would be going through.”

‘Reignite NPP’s Values To Recapture Power’

0

Hackman Owusu-Agyemang

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Council of Elders Chairman, Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, has called on members of the party to reignite the values of the NPP to recapture political power rather than engaging in acts that has the tendency to undermine the party’s unity while in opposition.

Speaking at a panel discussion to mark the 78th anniversary of United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) in Accra, he said the UGCC survived in the midst of difficulties for over three decades as a result of selfless leadership and united front.

While paying glowing tributes to some individuals such as Paa Grant, Da Rocha, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey among others who contributed immensely to the development of the party, Mr. Owusu-Agyemang called on members to emulate such legacy and embark on actions that would protect people’s liberty, defend integrity and build a country that uplifts the lives of people.

He said, “We have fallen, we blame nobody but ourselves. That does not mean we are out, the spirit of our predecessors should be able to energise us to go forward. We must eschew our self interest for the broader interest of the party.”

He pointed out that, although the NPP lost the 2024 election, members should not lose hope but organise themselves to recapture power, to be able to fulfil the party’s larger vision of transforming lives.

“You form political parties to win power so that you can execute your programmes and policies. What’s the use if we don’t give all ourselves, then we must as well sleep,” he stressed.

Also present at the anniversary held under the theme “Ghana’s Future is not a Spectator Sport” at the NPP’s Patriotic Institute include presidential aspirant of the party, Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong; Deputy IT Director, Mr. Stephen Forson; Deputy Communication Director, Hajia Rabi Salifu; former Chairman of the party, Mr. Peter Mark Manu, Madam Elizabeth Ohene among several other dignitaries.

Bechem United Sign Former Man City Prospect Aminu for Ghana Campaign

0

Bechem United have secured a significant coup ahead of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season, signing 24-year-old midfielder Mohammed Aminu, a former Manchester City academy product and Ghana U17 international.

The club announced the transfer Thursday, highlighting Aminu’s “pace, power and European flair” as assets expected to bolster their attacking dynamics.

Aminu returns to Ghana after a seven-year European journey that began with a €1.8 million move from WAFA to Manchester City in 2017. He featured for City’s U23 side before loan spells at NAC Breda, Dordrecht, and Lommel United, followed by stints with Greece’s AEP Kozanis and Nigeria’s Gombe United. The midfielder was part of Ghana’s 2017 U-17 World Cup squad, once considered among the nation’s top prospects.

“Mohammed is set to bring flair, creativity and goals to our frontline,” Bechem stated, positioning the signing as a strategic boost for their domestic campaign. His return represents an opportunity to reignite a career that began with high promise but saw limited first-team breakthroughs abroad. The transfer marks a homecoming for the Accra-born player as he aims to establish himself in Ghana’s top flight.

DStv’s Ghana Future Hangs in Balance as Price Cut Deadline Passes

0

Multichoice
Multichoice

Ghana faces a potential pay-TV blackout as MultiChoice’s deadline to slash DStv prices by 30% expired today, with no resolution announced.

Communications Minister Sam George’s ultimatum demands lower subscription fees, accusing the company of “fleecing Ghanaians” after a 15% price hike in April despite improved economic indicators. MultiChoice remains silent on compliance, risking license suspension that could take DStv off air before the Premier League season begins August 15.

Minister George revealed MultiChoice proposed freezing prices while halting revenue repatriation—an offer he rejected as inadequate. “Corporations have fleeced Ghanaians too long. This reset demands public service that protects citizens,” he stated. DStv maintains its pricing reflects content licensing costs and infrastructure challenges, though its recent compliance with similar demands in Nigeria intensifies scrutiny.

Possible outcomes range from service shutdown to negotiated compromise. A blackout would cut access to live sports and popular shows, jeopardize 200+ local jobs, and strand pubs reliant on match-day revenue. Policy analysts suggest tiered pricing or gradual reductions as middle-ground solutions, alongside licensing competitors to break MultiChoice’s monopoly.

Short-term alternatives remain limited. While StarTimes, Netflix, and Showmax offer partial substitutes, none match DStv’s satellite reach in internet-poor areas or comprehensive sports coverage. The impasse tests Ghana’s balance between consumer protection and investor confidence, with broader implications for regulatory predictability in emerging markets.

As Ghana targets 4.8% non-oil GDP growth this year, the government faces pressure to uphold Minister George’s stance that “national interest must trump all else” without destabilizing digital investment. With millions awaiting clarity, the outcome will signal how Africa’s liberal economies navigate monopoly regulation in interconnected media markets.

Fair Wages and Salaries Commission Board inaugurated

0

A seven-member governing board of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has been inaugurated to promote fairness and transparency in public sector compensation.

The board, chaired by a legal practitioner with Adom Mbrodo Law Chamber, Samuel Adu-Yeboah, includes prominent professionals from various fields, including law, public service, and the Ghana Employers Association.

Members are Dr George Smith-Graham, Chief Executive of the FWSC; Annie Moghtar Mohayideen of S&AC Law; and Dr Prince E. Darah of the Public Services Commission (PSC).

Others are Joyce Aseidu-Ofei, representing the Ghana Employers Association; Madam Hilda Ashie, a retired staff member of the FWSC; and Shadrack Mensah of the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment.

Significance of FWSC

Inaugurating the board, the Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr Rashid Pelpuo, urged the members to uphold fairness and equity in public sector pay administration.

He highlighted the pivotal role of the FWSC in promoting good governance and fairness in public sector compensation.

He emphasised the challenges of managing the public service wage bill within a sustainable economic framework and the need for an Independent Emoluments Commission to address disparities in wages and salaries administration.

The Minister congratulated the newly inaugurated board members on their appointment and thanked them for their willingness to serve the nation.

He tasked them with developing mechanisms to reduce labour unrest arising from pay inequities and assured the board members of his full cooperation and support in their work after expressing his confidence in their expertise and determination to fulfil their duties.

Board’s response

On behalf of the board, Adu-Yeboah expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for appointing them and for the opportunity to serve on the commission.

The Youth Are Doing Rasta Because of You; Don’t Expose Yourself to More Questions- Solomon Owusu

0

Ghanaian social commentator Solomon Owusu has appealed to dancehall star Shatta Wale to channel his strong influence among the youth toward national development.

In a recent Facebook post, Owusu described the artist as a cultural “icon” and emphasized that his behavior significantly shapes the attitudes and styles of young Ghanaians.

According to Owusu, Shatta Wale’s impact is evident in how young people adopt his fashion and lifestyle. “You see the young ones now have rasta rasta, they learnt it from Shatta Wale.

Whatever he does, the youths like it and copy it,” he noted. He added that the government could benefit from partnering with the musician to guide youth in a more productive direction, saying, “If you’re a state and want to move the youth to a certain direction, he’s the kind of guy who can do that for the country.”

However, Owusu cautioned Shatta Wale against engaging in controversies that could attract unwanted criticism.

He advised the artist to refine his public behavior and hire professionals to manage his image. “Shatta must reorganize himself and get professionals to handle these matters.

Rather than going round talking by heart, he shouldn’t open himself for further questions,” he stated.

Owusu’s remarks contribute to the broader conversation about the responsibility of celebrities in influencing national discourse.

With Shatta Wale continuing to shape youth culture through his music and persona, many are curious to see how he responds to this call for a more structured and impactful role.

Minority mourns victims of military helicopter crash, calls for national unity

0

The Minority in Parliament has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two Cabinet Ministers, calling on Ghanaians to unite in grief and honour the fallen through acts of national service.

In a statement signed by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin on August 6, the caucus described the incident as a profound national loss that “touches the very soul of our Nation.”

Among the deceased are Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye.

Three military personnel also perished: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Afenyo-Markin offered personal reflections on Dr. Omane Boamah and Dr. Murtala Mohammed, describing them as passionate public servants whose legacies transcend political affiliations.

“To the grieving families, our hearts go out to you in your darkest hour,” the statement read.

The Minority reaffirmed its solidarity with the President and the entire nation during this period of mourning and encouraged citizens to honour the memory of the victims by supporting Ghana’s Armed Forces, protecting the environment, and promoting national unity.

“May their souls rest in perfect peace, and may their memories remain everlasting beacons of light,” the statement concluded.

How To Dress As A Mother When Attending Any Event

0

A mother’s appearance at social and formal gatherings often reflects her deep sense of responsibility, dignity, and cultural pride. Whether she is attending an Owambe celebration, a church thanksgiving, a wedding reception, or her child’s graduation, a Nigerian mother is expected to exude elegance, poise, and maturity. Her outfit is more than just clothing—it is a statement of identity, tradition, and refined taste. Dressing as a mother blends modesty with fashion, showing that grace and confidence can coexist effortlessly.

One of the most iconic and graceful choices for mothers is the traditional iro and buba. This timeless Yoruba ensemble has undergone modern transformations, evolving from simple and oversized garments into tailored, stylish designs that fit today’s fashion standards. When crafted from rich fabrics such as lace or Ankara and adorned with embroidery, sequins, or metallic detailing, the iro and buba becomes a sophisticated masterpiece. Finishing the look with a beautifully tied gele, matching heels, and a chic handbag gives the outfit a polished and ceremonial feel.

For a more structured yet contemporary appearance, many women now choose Aso Oke gowns with figure-flattering silhouettes. Floor-length gowns with defined bodices and dramatic flares are not only elegant but also reflect prestige. Luxurious materials like brocade, jacquard, or velvet lend a regal touch, especially when accessorized with layered coral beads or traditional jewelry—making them perfect for weddings, anniversaries, and naming ceremonies.

Another enduring favorite is the boubou gown. Known for its flowing form and ease of wear, the boubou is both stylish and comfortable. When made from silk, chiffon, or organza and embellished with stones or embroidery, it transforms into a statement piece. Paired with minimal jewelry and a tastefully wrapped turban or scarf, the boubou remains a top choice for church services, receptions, and formal events.

West Hills Mall Launches ‘Catch The Cash’ Campaign

0

This August, West Hills Mall is flipping the script on ordinary retail promotions with a campaign that has shoppers literally chasing money. Dubbed, “Catch the Cash,” the high-energy weekend experience is turning heads, drawing crowds, and transforming the mall into a destination for thrill-seekers and bargain hunters alike.

Shoppers who spend GH¢300 or more are invited to step into a transparent money booth – yes, and grab as much flying “cash” as they can within 30 seconds. The amount caught is then instantly converted into West Hills Mall shopping vouchers, redeemable at select tenant stores.

But the campaign’s deeper purpose is what truly resonates. In a time when customer experience often feels transactional, ‘Catch the Cash’ flips the narrative.

It is a bold gesture of gratitude, an invitation to play, and a public celebration of loyalty. Every voucher, every cheer, and every spin in the booth is a thank-you to the people who have made West Hills Mall their preferred destination.

Each weekend activation is supercharged with the energy of a live DJ, a charismatic MC, and on-ground hype crews that turn every round into a show. The result is a contagious atmosphere where laughter, cheering, and spontaneous dance-offs are as common as the giveaways.

“We wanted to create something more than a promotion. We wanted an experience that rewards our customers in a fun and unforgettable way,” said Wendy Aryee, Marketing Manager of West Hills Mall.

The momentum around Catch the Cash is growing week by week, driven by real-time excitement, social media buzz, and strong word-of-mouth. Shoppers are sharing their moments online, tagging friends, and turning the activation into a shared community event. Tenants are seeing deeper in-store engagement, while customers leave with smiles, shopping bags, and stories to tell.

This is not about prayer. This guy is threatening to my life.”

Geoge Afriyie describes Kurt Okraku’s proposal to extend the term of office from two to three as a Kangaroo process

0

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President, George Afriyie, expressed his strong opposition to the current GFA President Kurt Okraku’s efforts to extend the term of office for the GFA President from two to three terms.

Afriyie, a seasoned football administrator, made it clear that no club in Ghana has endorsed the proposed extension of the GFA President’s tenure, calling the process “a Kangaroo process,” a term commonly used to describe proceedings that appear to be unfair or lack transparency.

“This is a process that is not only unsupported but also undemocratic,” Afriyie said, emphasizing that any changes to the governance structure of the GFA should be made through consultation with the relevant stakeholders, particularly the clubs themselves,” he told Original TV.

The controversy surrounding the proposed extension of the presidential tenure comes amidst ongoing debates over the leadership and future direction of the GFA.

Kurt Okraku, who took office in 2019, has yet to comment publicly on the growing opposition to the proposed term change.

Afriyie’s remarks reflect the increasing tension within the Ghanaian football landscape, with many stakeholders questioning the transparency of the decision-making process at the GFA and calling for more democratic engagement in such crucial matters.

Alex Afenyo-Markin

The Minority in Parliament has expressed profound sorrow over the deaths of eight Ghanaians in yesterday’s tragic military helicopter crash, describing the incident as a devastating national loss that has shaken the soul of the nation.

In a statement issued and signed by the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the caucus extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, the Government, the Armed Forces, and all Ghanaians mourning this tragedy.

The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, earlier confirmed the deaths of Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; Environment Minister, Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, NDC National First Vice Chairman, Dr. Samuel Sarpong; and former parliamentary candidate, Samuel Aboagye.

Also on board the ill-fated aircraft were Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin-Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah – all of whom perished in the crash.

“These were fathers, husbands, sons, and patriots who awoke this morning with the noble intention of serving Ghana,” the Minority Leader stated.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin paid special tribute to Dr. Omane Boamah and Dr. Murtala Mohammed, describing their service as exemplary.

He recalled moments of bipartisan engagement with Murtala Mohammed, praising his commitment to environmental protection and his ability to listen and engage respectfully across the political aisle.

Dr. Omane Boamah, he noted, combined “a scholar’s intellect with a patriot’s heart” and had a vision to modernise Ghana’s military while preserving its values.

“These personal losses remind us that behind every political position lies a human being, someone’s beloved family member, someone’s trusted friend,” the Minority Leader said, urging all Ghanaians to reflect on the deeper human cost of public service.

The Minority pledged its full support to President Mahama in this period of national mourning, and assured the grieving families that their loved ones’ sacrifices would not be forgotten.

“In this moment of national tragedy, we stand united with you as Ghanaians mourning together,” the statement added.

The Minority urged all citizens to honour the memory of the deceased by supporting the Armed Forces, protecting the environment, and strengthening the pillars of Ghana’s democracy, calling for a national recommitment to unity, service, and progress.

“These were individuals who dedicated their lives to the service of our nation. Their untimely and tragic demise is a devastating blow to Parliament, the Government, the Armed Forces, and the people of Ghana as a whole,” he said.

The statement reaffirmed Parliament’s solidarity with President John Mahama, the Government, and all Ghanaians during this national tragedy.

It hailed the victims’ patriotism and commitment to duty as a legacy that will remain etched in the history of the Republic.

Rev Father Dogli Memorial Institute tops Catholic STEM contest with plastic waste innovations

The Reverend Father Dogli Memorial Technical Institute from the Oti Region has emerged as the overall winner of the Southern Sector STEM Plastic Waste Competition for Catholic Senior High Schools in Ghana.

Held in Accra on August 5, 2025, the competition brought together brilliant young minds to pitch creative solutions to Ghana’s growing plastic waste crisis.

Also in contention were St. Catherine Catholic Girls Senior High School, St. Michael Senior High School, St. Margaret Mary Senior High Technical School, and St. Gregory Senior High School.

St. Gregory Senior High School claimed second place in the highly competitive event.

Madam Berthy Buah, Regional STEM Coordinator at the Ghana Education Service, said STEM education is designed to empower students to be problem-solvers and environmental stewards.

She expressed optimism that such initiatives would inspire a deeper sense of responsibility among the youth.

“I am really impressed with these innovative minds; you can see that a lot of thinking has gone into this,” she said.

Organized by the Catholic Education Unit in collaboration with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) and other partners, the event provided a platform for students to develop sustainable innovations using plastic waste.

Students showcased a range of impressive products, including plastic greenhouses, raincoats, bricks, flower vases, umbrellas, bags, baskets, and decorative items, all made from repurposed plastic.

Dr. Joseph Agyapong Darmoe, Programmes Director at KAS, lauded the creativity on display, describing the innovations as “surprising.”

He emphasized the urgency of the plastic waste problem, pointing out that Ghana generates an estimated 840,000 metric tonnes of plastic waste annually, exceeding the country’s cocoa output.

“The rate at which plastic waste is polluting our oceans is frightening. This contest is a strong step toward encouraging the youth to find real, sustainable solutions,” Dr. Darmoe said.

Francis Batadjan, General Manager of Catholic Schools in Ghana, said the contest served as more than a competition; it was a “wake-up call” to rethink waste management practices.

He urged students to continue developing ideas that would benefit their communities and the nation at large.

Ghana declares mourning after ministers killed in…

Ghana has declared three days of national mourning after two government ministers were killed in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday.

The crash happened in a forested area in the south of the country. The helicopter was carrying three crew and five passengers. All eight people on board died.

Flags are flying at half-mast across Ghana.

Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed were among the dead. They were flying from Accra to the southern town of Obuasi when the crash happened, the presidency said.

“The president and government extend our condolences and sympathies to the families of our comrades and the servicemen who died in service to the country,” said President John Mahama’s chief of staff, Julius Debrah.

Mahama is said to be feeling “down emotionally”.

Messages of condolence have also come from the African Union and the West African bloc Ecowas.

The Ghanaian Armed Forces said an investigation is underway to find out what caused the crash.

Few details

Local television station Joy News showed mobile phone footage of burning wreckage in thick forest.

The military said earlier on Wednesday that an air force Z9 helicopter had gone missing from radar. It had taken off from Accra just after 9:00 am local time and was heading northwest to Obuasi.

Media reports said the flight was linked to an event on illegal gold mining, a major environmental problem in Ghana.

Muhammed, 50, was due to attend UN talks in Geneva this week on a global treaty to tackle plastic pollution.

He was serving as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.

Boamah had been appointed as Defence Minister in January, shortly after Mahama took office.

Environment challenges

Muhammed had been leading efforts to fight illegal gold mining. The practice has destroyed farmland and polluted rivers, and is threatening cocoa crops.

The issue featured heavily in last year’s election, which brought Mahama to power.

This year, the new government created the Ghana Gold Board and banned foreigners from the local gold trade. Both moves were seen as key parts of its crackdown.

The head of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), Inger Andersen, said Muhammed was a “committed environmentalist” and “deeply respected” across Africa and beyond.

She said he had recently been elected to the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) in Nairobi.

Regional tensions

The crash is a blow for Ghana’s security at a time of rising tension near its northern border.

Also among the dead were Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Ghana’s deputy national security coordinator and former agriculture minister, and Samuel Sarpong, a senior figure in Mahama’s National Democratic Congress party.

Boamah had been leading Ghana’s defence efforts at a time of growing violence in Burkina Faso.

Ghana has so far avoided jihadist attacks, unlike neighbours Togo and Benin. But some experts have warned of weapons smuggling and fighters crossing the border from Burkina Faso.

In May, Boamah travelled to Ouagadougou to boost ties with Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger – three military-led countries that recently quit Ecowas.

President Mahama has cancelled all official events for the rest of the week. The mourning period began on Thursday.

News Hub Creator1d

Popular Nollywood actress Elvina Ibru has revealed what happened to her when she visited her boyfriend in his house, while also stating why she would never visit a poor man in their house anymore.

According to the video that was posted on the official YouTube channel of With Chude TV on Saturday, August 2, 2025, during an interview, she stated that she went to her boyfriend’s to visit him but that she was forcefully molested by armed robbers that came to her boyfriend’s house.

According to Elvina Ibru, she said, “My boyfriend kept on pressurising me to come and spend the night with him in his house. I met him in Benin, he used to come to my house to spend time with me because he didn’t have his own house. He later moved to Lagos State because of me, and he came with some of his family members, but I still wasn’t comfortable because I can’t sleep over in his house because of his family. He eventually got his own place, but it’s very far, and it was very stressful for me to visit him because I was always busy with work. One day, he told me that I wasn’t treating him well because I’m a princess and that maybe his apartment wasn’t really good for me. I went to visit my boyfriend, armed robbers came, and they forcefully had sex with me. From that moment, I decided that I will never sleep over in a poor man’s house because he won’t be able to provide the security required to guarantee my safety.”

I’m Not A Criminal – Shatta Wale Slams EOCO

0

Shatta Wale

Dancehall artist Shatta Wale is fiercely pushing back against the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after armed officers stormed his home and seized his Lamborghini Urus, claiming the vehicle was linked to a convicted fraudster in the United States.

In a high-stakes international operation, EOCO confirmed in an August 5, 2025 press release that the 2019 Lamborghini was retrieved from Shatta Wale’s residence at Trassaco Valley Phase 1 in Accra, in collaboration with the FBI and the U.S. Justice Department.

The seizure is reportedly part of a wider crackdown on assets tied to Nana Kwabena Amuah, a convicted financial criminal serving an 86-month sentence in the U.S.

But Shatta Wale, born Charles Nii Armah Mensah, is adamant that he is an innocent party caught in the crossfire—and he’s not staying silent.

“I bought the Lamborghini for $150,000 and didn’t know it was from Adu-Boahene,” the artist said.

“I don’t know any Nana Kwabena Amuah. I am a third party to that Lamborghini. I repeat—I did not get any vehicle from him.”

Shatta Wale revealed that he and his legal team in the U.S. conducted due diligence on the vehicle through Carfax, an online platform for checking a car’s history. According to him, nothing flagged the vehicle as stolen or suspicious.

The artist expressed outrage at the way the seizure was conducted. According to him, heavily armed Surveillance and Asset Recovery Unit (SARU) officers arrived at his home unannounced, with one of them even cocking his weapon.

“Am I a criminal to be treated like this?” he asked, visibly shaken by the encounter. “I’m leaving the car for you people—don’t come to my house, and let nobody invite me.”

However, EOCO, in its statement, claimed the operation was civil and without incident, stating that Shatta Wale voluntarily surrendered the car after requesting the operation remain discreet to protect his brand. However, his account tells a story of intimidation and fear.

The agency defended the officers’ use of firearms, saying it is standard safety protocol for SARU operatives to be armed during operations.

EOCO also confirmed that Shatta Wale and a former senior officer of the National Signal Bureau (NSB) have been designated persons of interest and may be invited for further questioning in the ongoing investigation.

Meanwhile, the FBI and the U.S. Justice Department are preparing to file a Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) request with the Government of Ghana to repatriate the Lamborghini to the U.S., where it will be counted towards Amuah’s $4.7 million restitution.

EOCO has said it may share the final investigation findings with U.S. authorities as part of their ongoing cooperation.

Big Madam Outfits Ladies Can Slay To Look Outstanding

0

The term “Big Madam” represents far more than just a fashion label—it’s a symbol of refined confidence, timeless beauty, and dignified presence. This style, often embraced by mature and self-assured women, showcases a perfect harmony of traditional African aesthetics with modern fashion sophistication. Big Madam fashion is not just about clothing; it’s about the graceful way these women carry themselves—with poise, power, and unmistakable charm.

A cornerstone of this look is the use of rich, premium fabrics, particularly Ankara, which holds deep cultural significance across Africa. Known for its vibrant colors, bold patterns, and versatility, Ankara is frequently crafted into flowing gowns, fitted blouses, structured peplum tops, and majestic kaftans. It allows women to express their heritage while also displaying creativity and individuality. The fabric’s flexibility makes it ideal for both everyday elegance and grand occasions.

Lace is another key element in the Big Madam wardrobe. Its delicate texture and intricate patterns bring an air of sophistication and femininity to any ensemble. Whether in floor-length gowns or paired with George wrappers for traditional ceremonies, lace radiates a classic charm perfect for weddings, anniversaries, and other formal gatherings.

Accessories are equally essential in completing the Big Madam image. Bold gele headwraps, dazzling jewelry, elegant handbags, and stylish footwear all play an important role in enhancing the outfit. These pieces do more than decorate—they make a statement of confidence and status.

The Big Madam style is about more than fashion—it’s about honoring one’s heritage, embracing maturity, and showcasing inner strength through personal style. It reflects a woman’s journey, pride, and the elegance she brings into every room she enters.
