“It’s not new” – Asamoah Gyan on NDC’s 24-hour economy policy

0

Former Ghana international Asamoah Gyan says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) needs to come clear with their 24-hour economy policy as he believes it’s not a ‘new’ thing.

According to Gyan, some sectors in the country already run a similar policy urging the newly-voted government to commit to improving it.

The policy was one of the NDC’s campaign messages and played a strong role in their return to power for the next four years.

Gyan, in an Instagram live session on Thursday, January 2, questioned the true intentions of the policy.

“It already exists. Police stations, hospitals, and filling stations already operate on a 24-hour basis,” he said.

“If the government says ‘24-hour economy,’ they should focus on improving it. It’s not a new policy.”

Gyan before deciding to step away from politics was chosen to be part of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team ahead of the 2024 general elections.

CHASS urges GES to reconsider January 3 school reopening amid financial concerns

0

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) has urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) to reconsider reopening schools on January 3, 2025, due to unresolved financial issues.

In an interview on Joy News on Thursday, January 7, 2024, CHASS General Secretary, Baro Primus, emphasised that schools have not received funds or food supplies, making it challenging for them to provide essential services to students.

He further explained the position of CHASS, stating, “We haven’t rescinded our decision. Our appeal still holds. If the Ghana Education Service (GES) says the schools are reopening, we have no argument about who has the power to reopen schools.

“Our stance is that if schools are going to be reopened tomorrow, and as of today, schools have not received money and food, we believe that students can come. We are not going to lock any dormitory or prevent any students from coming. However, if the schools are unable to provide food, buy materials, and meet other essential needs, we cannot be held responsible.”

In an earlier statement issued on December 31, 2024, CHASS noted that the government has failed to respond to three previous appeals since August 2024 concerning the payment of arrears covering perishables, recurrent fees, and food transportation costs.

The school heads have warned that members who defy the directive will face sanctions for betraying their collective stance.

This marks the fourth appeal to education authorities regarding unpaid arrears, following letters sent in August, November, and December 2024.

I’m not a rival to anybody

Asamoah Gyan and Andre Ayew during training at Black Stars Asamoah Gyan and Andre Ayew during training at Black Stars

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has emphatically stated that he does not consider himself a rival to anyone while addressing his relationship with current Black Stars skipper Andre Ayew.

During an Instagram Live session on January 2, 2025, Gyan explained that instigators have strained his relationship with Ayew, claiming that the perceived rivalry between the two players stemmed from people brainwashing the former Olympique Marseille man.

The former Sunderland striker dismissed the narrative of a feud, emphasising that Andre Ayew consistently shows genuine affection whenever they meet.

“Andre is a good person. When he plays, he plays with passion. People brainwashed him, and I know it wasn’t his fault,” Gyan said in response to a fan’s question about his relationship with Ayew.

“Are you okay? Because today I’m in my element. You people create the problems, and I’ve told you it’s a fact. Are you okay? What do you want to know about me and Andre? Andre, when he sees me, has that genuine love inside. But he was brainwashed because people wanted to benefit from it. And that’s what brought this so-called rivalry. I’m not a rival to anybody,” he added.

Asamoah Gyan and Andre Ayew have been perceived as rivals since a controversial captaincy transition in 2019, when Gyan was replaced as Black Stars captain by Ayew.

The captaincy saga has been a significant source of tension in their relationship, with Gyan previously stating in an interview that Ayew is not his friend.

“Andre is my teammate, but he’s not my friend. In every job, you work together, but not everyone is your friend that you hang out with,” Gyan earlier said in an interview with Wontumi FM.

“Andre is my teammate, and when we’re in camp, we work together, but I can’t ask him to join me to go sit somewhere and have a conversation. I also have my own clique,” he stated.

‘Leave Party Matters to the Party’ and Serve All Ghanaians”

0

Kojo Yankah, a former Member of Parliament for Agona East, has urged government officials to prioritize national unity over partisan interests

According to MyNewsGH on Thursday, January 2, 2025, Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on January 2, he emphasized the need for appointees to represent all citizens, regardless of political affiliation.

Yankah expressed concern about the growing trend of public officials identifying themselves primarily by their party allegiance, which he believes undermines their responsibility to serve the entire population.

“When you go to a district or region as the president’s representative, the whole region is your responsibility,” he said.

He criticized the focus on party matters by some government representatives, urging them to leave political activities to party structures while dedicating their efforts to fostering development and inclusiveness.

Yankah highlighted that prioritizing unity and collaboration is essential for national progress.

“As a Ghanaian privileged to serve in a region, your principal duty should be to bring everyone together,” he added, calling for a governance approach that transcends political boundaries.

Yankah’s comments shows his long-standing advocacy for cohesion in governance, particularly in regions where appointees are often seen as serving party interests instead of the collective good.

His remarks are a call to action for public officials to embrace a mindset that unites communities, ensuring that all citizens benefit equally from government initiatives.

By urging leaders to rise above political divisions, Yankah reaffirms the importance of inclusive governance as a cornerstone for Ghana’s growth and stability.

Fire Destroys Over 100 Shops At Kantamanto

About 100 shops and wooden structures at the Kantamanto second-hand clothing market in Accra’s Central Business District, was razed down by a fire outbreak.

The Inferno which began about 1am on Thursday, January 2, 2025 left has left hundreds of traderslsing their source of livelihood.

Live footage from the scene showed devastated traders trying to salvage what was left of their investments.

Eyewitnesses said the fire broke out suddenly, catching many off guard.

“We were asleep when we heard someone shouting. When we woke up, we saw that there was a fire outbreak,” one resident recounted.

The Ghana National Fire Service said it deployed 13 fire tenders from across the Greater Accra Region to combat the blaze.

Speaking to the media, Fire Service spokesperson ADO1 Alex King Nartey, described the situation as “very serious.”

He explained that while firefighters initially managed to douse the fire, their efforts were hampered by the unavailability of a fire hydrant and the depletion of their water supply, leading to the fire reigniting.

Despite the severity of the fire, he noted that there had been no reports of severe casualties so far.

However, ADO1 Alex King Nartey stated that extinguishing the fire could take approximately two days, given its intensity and the conditions on the ground.

Traders and local residents joined the firefighters in battling the inferno, but the scale of destruction was immense.

The traders are appealing for immediate support to rebuild their businesses, while others are urging authorities to investigate the cause of the fire and improve market safety measures.

Nana Yaa Jantuah blasts Akufo-Addo; calls his presidency a ‘mistake’ for Ghana

0

Former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Yaa Jantuah, has described Ghana’s outgoing president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, as an error and a mistake bestowed upon the people of Ghana.

According to Jantuah, the day the citizens of Ghana cast their votes for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was the day the country was ruined.

To her, what’s even more worrying is the decision to award himself the title of the best president the country has ever had.

She expressed strong dissatisfaction regarding the difficulties Ghanaians are currently facing under Akufo-Addo’s leadership, pointing out that many Ghanaians could not even afford to buy chicken for Christmas.

“When I say that Nana Addo has the tendencies of Nebuchadnezzar, people think I am joking. He awarded himself the title of the best president. What does that mean? He is an error, a mistake. Something that has been bestowed upon us, he has brought darkness to this nation,” she said on TV3’s New Day.

“The state of the nation is reflected in my pocket, your pocket, and everyone’s pocket. This Christmas, we could not even afford to buy chicken. I am an ordinary Ghanaian, and I’m no different from anyone on the street,” she added.

“We should always make Christmas as part of our lives showing Christ and not only at the end of the year or 25th. Christmas is the living sprit in you and you should live it moment by moment. Daily Christmas means aligning yourself and your spirit with God.

He also advised the staff to work hard in whatever task they were assigned and be grateful to God for the opportunity to serve the country in different capacities and be patient to rise through the ranks citing examples of staff who through hard work and dedication to duty at lower ranks have risen through the ranks and were now in senior positions

Visiting spot where Daniel Craig’s 007 perished in No Time To Die

0

No Time To Die: Billy Magnussen speaks to the Daily Express

Daniel Craig’s No Time To Die did what none of the previous 24 James Bond outings had ever done before. After despatching off Rami Malek’s villain Safin, Ian Fleming’s spy died after being blown to smithereens by missiles hitting the island lair. The world was left in shock and now 007 fans can actually visit the spot where James Bond died.

In No Time To Die, Safin’s evil lair, Poison Island, was set between Russia and Japan in disputed waters. In reality, the movie was shot in the Faroe Islands, found just north of Scotland, specifically on one of their most remote isles.

Only accessible by ferry, Kalsoy (which means man island), is a beautiful, mountainous and mystical place, home to myths, legends and a population of less than 100.

At the northernmost point is a village of 14 called Trøllanes, which translates as Troll peninsula. It’s believed that in the old days the community would be visited every Twelfth Night by the magical creatures.

A young man called Jóhannus Kallgarð owns most of the land, hence his nickname The King of Kalsoy, which was his credit at the end of No Time To Die.

When Express.co.uk visited a couple of years ago, the hospitable Faroese farmer told us that his family have lived there since the 1600s and it’s often scouted by Hollywood for the likes of Star Wars and Game of Thrones. But it was James Bond who went all the way. A small camera crew from the No Time To Die production spent three weeks with The King of Kalsoy at the edge of Trøllanes filming shots for Safin’s island with locals hired as runners.

Originally, Daniel Craig himself had hoped to travel to the Faroes to shoot the scenes, but it wasn’t viable with all his security and crew on the small island. In the end, the spot where Bond dies by a cliff edge was shot for the star to be digitally added in afterwards. However, the farmer was unaware of what exactly was being filmed for the 007 movie, as helicopters helped transport equipment up the mountain landscape. That was until he worked it out.

Safin’s lair was shot on Kalsoy in the Faroe Islands (Image: MGM)

The King of Kalsoy had access to a script while working on No Time To Die with the camera crew and knew that 007 was going to be added later to the shots and that Safin’s lair would be blown up. After filming concluded in 2019, he took the almighty gamble and ordered a grave for James Bond. The farmer now had the biggest spoiler in cinema history engraved into stone and had to keep it quiet. For months he kept the memorial hidden down at the village in his slaughterhouse as he banked on 007’s death. Flash forward to September 2021 and the star-studded world premiere of No Time To Die took place at the Royal Albert Hall.

The next day, the Faroe Islands had their own one in the capital of Tórshavn with The King of Kalsoy and Prime Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen, a self-confessed Bond fan, in attendance. The farmer shared with us that when the third act saw 007 head to Safin’s Island, the audience erupted in cheers as he awaited to witness the spy’s fate with great anticipation. Lo and behold, he was of course right, and began plans to unveil his tribute to Bond.

In March 2022, the Faroe Islands announced that the tombstone of 007 would be unveiled by the country’s Prime Minister on Kalsoy, in a stunning video. The farmer told us he’d originally asked Craig himself who wasn’t available, but apparently, the star is still open to visiting the spot in the future. The grave reads, “In memory of James Bond 1962-2021”, referencing the premiere year of Sean Connery’s Dr No, the first 007 movie, as his date of birth. And under this is the Jack London quote M said at the end of No Time To Die upon the news of 007’s death: “The proper function of a man is to live, not to exist.”

Where does Ghana’s new president stand on the anti-LGBTQ+ bill?

0

What’s the context?

Ghana’s incoming president faces dilemma over signing the country’s strict anti-LGBTQ+ bill into force

Ghana’s incoming president, John Mahama, must weigh whether to approve a strict anti-LGBTQ+ bill passed by parliament, but left unsigned by his predecessor, that could jeopardise billions of dollars of financing from international creditors.

Here’s what you need to know.

What does the bill do?

The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill is one of the strictest such measures in Africa.

If it becomes law, LGBTQ+ people in the West African country, already facing discrimination and marginalisation, could also be denied access to jobs, healthcare and housing.

Same-sex relations in Ghana are already punishable by up to three years in jail, but the bill would extend maximum sentences and add a slew of new offences, including identifying as LGBTQ+, or showing support for gay and transgender rights.

What is the status of the bill?

Ghana’s parliament unanimously passed the bill on Feb. 28, but President Nana Akufo-Addo never signed it into law.

Akufo-Addo said he was waiting for the outcome of legal challenges to the bill, but the courts have dismissed three of those and the final case is due to be decided in March.

That means the decision will now be left to Mahama who will be sworn in as president on Jan. 7.

What are the financial implications of the bill?

Ghana’s Finance Ministry said in March that presidential approval of the legislation could lead to the loss of $3.8 billion in World Bank financing over the next five to six years, and derail a $3-billion loan package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Without World Bank and IMF backing for Ghana, other international investors could also withdraw financing.

That would lead to huge financial problems for a country that only managed to restructure its debt last year after nearly two years of not being able to pay its creditors following an earlier financial crisis.

What has the president-elect said about the bill?

In January last year, Mahama said he was against same-sex marriage.

“The faith I have will not allow me to accept a man marrying a man, and a woman marrying a woman,” he said.

In November, he told members of the clergy that being LGBTQ+ was a taboo that Western countries were pressurising African nations to accept in return for financial aid.

During the campaign for December’s general election, Mahama said same-sex relations went against his faith and culture and that he would strengthen laws against LGBTQ+ activities.

But days before the polls, when pressed by the BBC, Mahama would not say outright whether we sign the bill into force.

After his victory, Mahama told a delegation of clergy that “it is our hope that this president will sign the bill. If he doesn’t, it will expire, and the next parliament will have to address it again.”

What is Mahama’s record on LGBTQ+ rights?

As vice-president in 2011, Mahama said it was hard for authorities to address the higher rates of HIV/AIDS amongst men who have sex with men due to the stigma attached to them being open about their sexuality.

There is a very strong cultural hostility towards homosexuality in our society so often people are not willing to own up to their sexual orientation,” he said in an interview at Yale University. “We are trying to educate people to understand that we need to remove the stigma.”

But as president from 2012 to 2016, Mahama maintained Ghana’s prevailing conservative stance.

For instance, when there was uproar after he nominated Nana Oye Lithur, a human rights lawyer who had defended LGBTQ+ rights, as a minister, Mahama reiterated that he does not support gay rights, and that homosexuality is criminal in Ghana.

Don’t discard the valuable policies along with the useless – Joe Jackson advises Mahama

0

Joe Jackson is the CEO of Dalex Finance Joe Jackson is the CEO of Dalex Finance

CEO of Dalex Finance, Joe Jackson has initiated a discussion with his recommendations for the new administration.

In a post on social media, Jackson called for a practical approach to governance, emphasising the need to improve key policies established by the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) government rather than completely discarding them.

“Don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater,” Jackson urged, emphasising the importance of continuity.

He specifically pointed to three flagship initiatives: the Bank of Ghana’s “Gold for Reserves/Gold for Oil,” the Ministry of Tourism’s “Year of Return,” and the Ministry of Agriculture’s “One Village, One Dam.”

According to Jackson, these programs represent “excellent concepts” but suffer from “ambiguous execution.”

He added, “Create new labels, but do it!”—encouraging the Mahama-led government to address the shortcomings in implementation while preserving the initiatives’ core objectives.

The “Gold for Reserves/Gold for Oil” initiative, designed to stabilize fuel prices by leveraging Ghana’s gold reserves for oil imports, faced criticism for transparency and feasibility issues.

Similarly, the “Year of Return” gained international acclaim for boosting tourism and reconnecting the African diaspora with their roots but fell short in capitalizing on its momentum.

Meanwhile, the “One Village, One Dam” project, aimed at enhancing rural agriculture through irrigation systems, was plagued by allegations of subpar construction and limited impact.

Ghana’s former captain, Asamoah Gyan, broke down in tears while interacting with fans during a live session on his Instagram page.

It remains unclear what triggered the emotional outburst, but the former Sunderland striker reminisced about his past experiences with the Black Stars while engaging with his followers.

The incident, which occurred on the afternoon of Thursday, December 2, 2025, saw Gyan praising some of his former teammates, including Prince Tagoe and Andre Ayew.

However, in a sudden turn of events, the 2010 BBC African Player of the Year was seen sobbing as he sang gospel tunes.

Gyan also issued a stern warning to fans and citizens, urging them to refrain from speaking ill of him, adding that there would be consequences for anyone who did so.

The retired striker remains Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances. His six goals at the FIFA World Cup make him the top-scoring African player in the tournament’s history.

In June 2023, Gyan officially retired from professional football after an illustrious 18-year career.

Kantamanto Fire: Affected shops were closely situated

0

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has clarified its response to the devastating fire that engulfed the Kantamanto market, destroying over 100 shops.

According to the GNFS, the close proximity of the shops made it easier for the fire to spread rapidly, resulting in extensive damage.

This explanation comes in response to accusations from some vendors, who claimed that firefighters prioritized dousing the flames in surrounding structures that had not yet been affected, instead of focusing on the burning market.

Addressing these concerns, ADO1 Alex King Nartey of the GNFS explained that the decision was strategic, aimed at preventing the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, as much of the market had already been consumed by the flames.

“Per our evaluation, the fire has destroyed over a hundred stores because many of them were closely situated by each other. So, once the fire catches one, the spread becomes easier. But the good thing is that the salvage is much more than the damage. Because, looking at the other buildings, we have been able to salvage them from the fire.

“It has been a daunting task, especially considering the fact that there isn’t any working fire hydrant here, it was a big problem for us. We had to travel to Frisco or GRA to go and replenish. In the early hours, it was so much of a problem, but when it was morning and the whole place became congested; it became a bigger problem,” he stared.

Stormzy banned from driving after being caught using phone behind wheel

0

British Rapper Stormzy, 31, has been banned from driving for nine months after being caught using a mobile phone while driving his Rolls-Royce in London. An undercover police officer spotted him on Addison Road, West Kensington, in March last year.

Stormzy, whose real name is Michael Ebenezer Owuo Junior, pleaded guilty to the offence via a letter submitted to Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court.

District Judge Andrew Sweet criticised his actions as “dangerous and irresponsible,” noting that Stormzy already had six points on his licence for previous speeding offences.

The court heard that the officer knocked on the tinted window of the vehicle and warned, “Get rid of your tints and get off your phone.” Stormzy’s solicitor stated that the rapper accepted full responsibility for his actions.

This isn’t the first time the artist has faced driving-related issues. In October 2023, he was stopped while driving a Lamborghini Urus with illegally tinted front windows allowing only 4% light transmission, far below the legal 70% requirement. Prosecutor Alice Holloway described the vehicle’s condition as a danger to “vulnerable road users.”

The judge imposed a £2,010 fine on Stormzy, who did not attend court. The incidents highlight repeated concerns about the rapper’s driving record, which Judge Sweet deemed “not good.”

NPP Leader Cautions Against Afenyo-Markin’s Appointment as Minority Leader

0

According to reports from GhanaWeb, a prominent figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Amoako Baah, has cautioned against appointing Alexander Afenyo-Markin as the Minority Leader in Parliament.

He argued that such a decision would merely reward Afenyo-Markin for his poor performance during his time as Majority Leader.

This statement follows suggestions from several NPP Members of Parliament (MPs) who are advocating for Afenyo-Markin to take the leadership role for their faction.

Notable party members, including First Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu and Deputy Minority Chief Whip Ahmed Ibrahim, have voiced strong support for keeping Afenyo-Markin as the leader of the NPP caucus in the 9th Parliament.

Joe Wise emphasized the importance of experience, recalling how Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu distinguished himself in both leadership capacities, attributing his success to deliberate actions rather than chance.

Recently, the NPP’s women’s caucus has also added their voice to the discussion. Sheila Bartels, the MP for Ablekuma North, publicly urged the party to retain Patricia Appiagyei as deputy leader and Afenyo-Markin as the leader.

In an interview with Starr Today, Dr. Baah expressed his belief that Afenyo-Markin had not succeeded in upholding the party’s majority status.

He pointed out that while a party can rise to leadership through hard work, in this case, a demotion occurred while still seeking a leadership role.

He further advised the party to disregard any endorsements from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding Afenyo-Markin’s leadership.

Dr. Baah argued that the priorities of the NDC do not align with the NPP’s goals and emphasized that the reasons for the party’s past failures must be addressed before considering a return to leadership for Afenyo-Markin.

‘Same journalists voted for you’ – Rodri fires back at Cristiano Ronaldo over Ballon d’Or comments

Rodri, midfielder for Manchester City Rodri, midfielder for Manchester City

Manchester City midfielder and 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri has responded to Cristiano Ronaldo’s controversial remarks about the Ballon d’Or.

Ronaldo, who was named the Best Middle East Player of the Year at the 2024 Globe Soccer Awards on Friday, December 27, 2024, sparked debate among football fans with his comments.

The Portuguese captain claimed that Vinícius Júnior, who won both the Best Player and Best Striker awards on the same night, deserved the Ballon d’Or.

He also described the prestigious award as deceptive.

In response, Rodri expressed his surprise and disappointment over Ronaldo’s remarks.

The midfielder reminded the five-time Ballon d’Or winner that he, too, had benefited from the same voting process.

“Ronaldo saying Vinícius deserved the Ballon d’Or? Well, it was a surprise because he knows better than anyone how this award works and how the winner is chosen,” Rodri said.

“This year, the journalists who vote decided that I should win it. Probably, these same journalists were the ones who, at some point, voted for him to win it. I imagine that back then, he would have agreed,” he added.

This isn’t the first time Rodri has spoken out on the ongoing debate months after receiving the Ballon d’Or.

He had previously addressed Real Madrid’s decision not to attend the award ceremony in November 2024.

Rodri claimed his first Ballon d’Or in December 2024, beating competition from Real Madrid trio Vinícius Júnior, Jude Bellingham, and Dani Carvajal.

However, he has been sidelined since suffering a knee injury during Manchester City’s game against Arsenal in September 2024.

Stormzy banned from driving for mobile phone use

0

Stormzy has been banned from driving for nine months after an off-duty police officer caught him using a mobile phone behind the wheel of a Rolls-Royce in London.

The 31-year-old rapper, whose real name is Michael Ebenazer Owuo Junior, pleaded guilty via a letter to driving the Rolls-Royce Wraith while using a device on Addison Road, west Kensington, in March last year.

District judge Andrew Sweet said Stormzy’s driving record was “not good” and criticised his “dangerous and irresponsible” actions. The court was told he already had six points on his licence for previous speeding offences.

Stormzy’s solicitor told Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court his client accepted responsibility for his actions.

The court heard the off-duty officer knocked on his tinted passenger window and said: “Get rid of your tints and get off your phone.”

Stormzy had previously denied using his mobile while driving but wrote to the court to change his plea.

Previously, he also admitted driving a Lamborghini Urus that had front windows illegally tinted to only 4% light transmission, violating the 70% requirement.

Prosecutor Alice Holloway said the vehicle’s use was dangerous and put “vulnerable road users at risk”.

In that incident, Stormzy was stopped by officers on Coombe Lane, in Kingston upon Thames, at about 12:45 on 17 October 2023, having previously been warned about the windows.

Peter Csemiczky, defending, said his client apologised and had removed the tints.

The judge also fined Stormzy, who did not appear in court, £2,010 after six more points were added to his licence.

High Court overrules NDC’s objection against application of mandamus

0

By Joyce Danso

Accra, Jan. 2, GNA – An Accra High Court has overruled a preliminary objection raised against the writ of mandamus filed against the Electoral Commission in its bid to collate Parliamentary elections in four disputed Constituencies.

The court presided over Justice Forson Baah Agyapong therefore proceeded to hear the fresh mandamus application filed by the New Party (NPP).

The trial Judge in his ruling on the preliminary objection, said the High Court’ s inherent jurisdiction had been properly invoked because the application was not contesting already gazette results of the EC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) had raised a preliminary objection on the writ of mandamus filed by the New Patriotic Party  (NPP) against the EC to collate Parliamentary results in four Constituencies.

The NDC, through its Counsel Mr Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, argued that the mandamus application was an election petition in disguise and same was incompetent.

“I raise a preliminary objection for the incompetence of this application pursuant to Section 16 and 20 of the PNDC Law 284 as amended.

This is an election petition disguised as a mandamus application.” Mr Tameklo told the Trial Judge, Justice Foson Baah Agyapong.

Mr Tameklo held that the NPP should have filed an election petition and not a writ of mandamus.

This is because in instances where candidates have been declared in an election, it rather comes under an election petition.

Under Section 20 of the PNDC law 284, Mr Tameklo contended that election of a candidate shall be declared void on an election petition if the High Court was satisfied that the election was marred by acts of intimidation, bribery, and  mistreatment.

“The instant application is a clever way  to circumvent the proper hearing to be done by evidence in an election petition.

Mr Gary Nimako Marfo, Counsel for the New Patriotic Party, said the NDC objection should be based on point of law.

Opposing the objection, Mr Nimako Marfo argued that PNDC Law 284 quoted by Mr Tameklo had no repercussion on the application of mandamus as the results of disputed constituencies were yet to be gazetted.

According to him, the mandamus application is not here to cancel election results, for there is none to be cancelled.

“There is a public duty imposed on the Electoral Commission to conduct public elections and supervise same. Article 45 of the1992 Constitution  makes it clear that the EC was mandated to conduct public elections including collation and declaration of parliamentary results as to who won or lost.”

In a brief submission, Mr Justin Amenuvor, who represented the EC, quizzed, “How does a person who has raised preliminary objection expect this court to say whether or not  there has been a validly concluded election without going into the affidavit?”

A fresh mandamus application was filed by the NPP in respect of Tema Central, Techiman South, Ablekuma North and Okaikwei Central.

This was after the Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision, quashed the High Court order to collate parliamentary results for four constituencies.

The court in its ruling in an order of certiorari, among others, held that the NDC should have been given hearing in the writ of mandamus.

Shortage of drinks hits Oti as celebrants get disappointed

0

A significant shortage of beverages has hit the Oti Region as some spots and bars keep reporting shortages to the disappointment of celebrants of the festive season.

The largest wholesale depot in the regional capital, Abeg God Enterprise site at Dambai, has also recorded shortage of most beverage brands.

This year’s Christmas and New Year celebrations have brought an unprecedented level of activity to the region, with people transporting crates of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, livestock such as goats, fowls, and pigs, across towns.

Drinks, an indispensable commodity for the festivities, have been in high demand, making the shortage more noticeable.

Abeg God Enterprise, known as the biggest beverage supplier in the region, has struggled to meet the demands of customers. Patrons were seen rushing to purchase drinks but left disappointed as shelves ran empty.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), some customers expressed their frustration at the situation.

“We traveled all the way from Sene East, which is a far distance, only to find out that the drinks we wanted were not available. It’s very disappointing. However, the shop operators assured us that more stock is on the way, so we have no choice but to wait,” one customer said.

The festive season has also brought a significant influx of visitors to the region, with many long-distance travelers returning home for the holidays, which had added to the bustling atmosphere, as drivers transport people across various towns.

A source at the depot, who begged for anonymity disclosed that  stock was being replenished as trucks were in transit to refill the void.

Despite the challenges, the Oti region is enjoying a vibrant and smooth celebration filled with activities such as conventions, musical concerts, football matches, beach outings, pontoon cruises, and street jams.

The shortage, though inconveniencing had not dampened the festive spirit as residents and visitors alike find alternative ways to atone and celebrate the season.

Meanwhile, in a related development, the Krachi West Municipality in the Oti region has also faced a significant egg shortage during the 31st December crossover night, leaving many food vendors, especially, indomie sellers, frustrated.

Speaking to the GNA on New Year’s Eve, several vendors in Kete-Krachi lamented their inability to find eggs for their businesses despite visiting numerous shops in the area.

“We have roamed every corner of the municipality, going from shop to shop, but couldn’t find any eggs due to the shortage,” one indomie seller expressed in frustration.

Some of the eggs sellers, in an interview with the GNA attributed the sudden scarcity, to the high demand for eggs during the celebrations, as residents prepared to mark the occasion with various festivities.

Hajia Raabi, one of the egg sellers, assured vendors that the commodity would be available the next day.

0

John Dramani Mahama, President-elect John Dramani Mahama, President-elect

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his administration’s commitment to implementing the ‘24-hour economy’ policy.

“This will expand job opportunities and transform Ghana into an export-driven economy,” he said.

A 24-hour economy is an economic model whereby the whole or part of the architecture or infrastructure of the economy adjusts to support 24-hour operations of businesses, factories, government services, restaurants, shops, healthcare delivery, and banking, among others, throughout the country.

Interacting with the congregation during the 31st December Watch-night Service of the Assemblies of God Church in Tamale, Mr. Mahama said that in the coming months, his administration would embark on a purposeful, enthusiastic, and enterprising journey to reset the Ghanaian economy for growth and jobs.

“Together, we will create an environment that fosters entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainable development, ensuring that our youth can achieve their dreams right here at home.”

“My vision for our great nation includes a lean, efficient government that is responsive to your aspirations as proud Ghanaians,” he added.

The president-elect and his wife, Lordina, wished Ghanaians a year filled with productivity and prosperity.

“We thank God for guiding our paths through the past year. I trust Him to do something new in our lives,” he said.

“This year (2025) marks not merely the beginning of another chapter but a renewed promise to Ghanaians — a promise of hope, progress, and shared prosperity.”

Mr. Mahama noted that his government would work tirelessly to correct the New Patriotic Party-led administration’s wrongs, tackle corruption with dogged determination, and reduce excessive expenditures.

“Each citizen’s voice will be heard, and together, we will build a Ghana that reflects our collective hopes and dreams—the Ghana we all want and voted convincingly for,” he stated.

“To the youth, you are our most valuable asset. Your energy, creativity, and passion are vital to our future success. I urge you to believe in yourselves and in the endless possibilities that lie ahead.”

The participation of the youth would be crucial as they worked together to cultivate a thriving economy and forge a brighter future for all, he emphasized.

To business owners and entrepreneurs, Mr. Mahama assured them that the National Democratic Congress-led administration would support their efforts to create jobs and wealth.

“We are committed to removing barriers, simplifying processes, and providing the necessary resources to empower you to build and expand your businesses,” he said.

“Together, let us embrace positivity and hope. Let us stand united in the belief that we can reset our economy, restore dignity and integrity, and renew our collective commitment to building the Ghana we want—a Ghana of opportunities, equity, and shared success.”

As Ghanaians celebrate the new year, Mr. Mahama urged them to commit to working together, hand in hand, to achieve their goals and dreams.

“I am upbeat about fulfilling my campaign promises, knowing we can and will make a difference by working together. Here’s to a transformative and prosperous 2025 for all of us.”

He prayed that 2025 be filled with strength, resilience, and the unwavering belief that Ghanaians can achieve great things for their beloved country, Ghana.

Asante Kotoko have successfully retained the services of their vice-captain, Justice Blay, with a contract extension that will keep the influential midfielder at the club until 2026.

Blay’s previous deal was set to expire in January 2025, but following fruitful negotiations, the Porcupine Warriors announced the extension on Thursday via their social media platforms.

“We are excited to announce that Vice-Captain Justice Blay has signed a new deal to stay with Asante Kotoko for an additional one and a half years,” the club’s statement read.

Blay initially joined Kotoko on loan during the 2019/2020 season from Medeama SC, making an immediate impact with two goals in 12 appearances.

His stellar performances earned him a permanent move in the 2021/2022 season. Since then, he has amassed 56 league appearances and has become an indispensable figure in midfield.

This season, the tenacious Blay has played in 12 out of 15 Ghana Premier League matches, scoring once. His leadership and consistency continue to endear him to fans.

By retaining Blay, Kotoko fortifies their midfield and ensures his experience and influence remain integral to the club’s ambitions.

Mahama’s Victory Inspires Hope For Land Governance

0

Ghanaians have expressed confidence that Mahama’s victory at the 2024 polls presents an opportunity to improve land management and administration in the country. Ghanaians strongly believe that John Mahama’s return to power is an opportunity to restore and instill discipline in the land market and also to improve on the utilization of the nation’s natural resources compared to the out-going government.

Reinforcing this popular belief among Ghanaians in his New Year message, John Mahama gave an indication of his commitment to restoring integrity and efficiency in governance, indicating to Ghanaians his intention to reset the economy for growth and job creation, which he said would be anchored on the implementation of his 24-hour economy policy – a cornerstone of his leadership.

He added that “…together, we will create an environment that fosters entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainable development, ensuring that our youth can achieve their dreams right here at home.”

Prior to Mr. Mahama’s New Year message, a legal luminary and statesman – Kwaku Ansah Asare as well as the MP for Sagnarigu, A.B.A Fuseini expressed their confidence about Mahama’s ability to reset land management and administration in Ghana and to restore confidence in the way state lands are managed and allocated. Both statesmen urged the incoming government to review and overhaul the regime governing state land management and to halt the state capture and abuse in the allocation of government lands to political appointees. They urged the incoming government to address the many challenges facing the land sector and where possible return lands to their original owners – particularly those lands the state did not have a use for. The statesmen were optimistic that land administration would see improvements for the collective good of all particularly for traditional authorities, stools and families.

Currently, the land market is characterized by general indiscipline, difficult access to land, multiple sales, frequent litigation, a weak land administration regime and inadequate security of tenure and conflicts of interests between and within stools, skins, families and clans.

The planned introduction of a Citizens Service Delivery Charter by the incoming government would help address some of these challenges by streamlining service delivery by public officers and hold public officers accountable. It would also ensure strict enforcement of the code of conduct for public servants. In addition, the current state land allocation regime would be revised and replaced with a framework that restores trust, confidence and transparency while eliminating abuse of power by political appointees.

goes with compensations (including salaries and allowances).”

The statement further pointed out that despite the positive development, JUSAG noted with concern the delay in the approval process.

“We climaxed our golden jubilee in Cape Coast with a grand symposium on the judiciary
and peaceful elections. As the saying goes, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”

judicial quiz competition, and tourism to Cape Coast Castle and Kakum National Park,” it added.
