Embracing the Simple and Chic Side of Ankara Fashion

0

Ankara fabric, also known as African wax print, has long been a symbol of cultural identity, pride, and creativity across the African continent and beyond. Known for its bold colors, striking patterns, and rich heritage, Ankara has become a staple not only in traditional African attire but also in contemporary fashion circles worldwide.

While often associated with elaborate and vibrant ensembles, Ankara also has a more understated side. With the right styling, this bold fabric can take on a minimalist charm that’s both modern and timeless.

“Ankara is more than fabric—it’s a form of storytelling. Even in its simplest form, it speaks volumes about culture, identity, and beauty,” says Nigerian fashion designer Tolu Ajayi.

Here are some effortlessly stylish ways to rock Ankara in a simple and chic manner:

1. The Power of a Clean-Cut Dress

One of the easiest ways to embrace Ankara in a minimalist way is by choosing a well-tailored dress. Think A-line, sheath, or shift silhouettes—styles that offer structure without complication. A knee-length dress with a bold Ankara print requires little else to stand out. Pair it with neutral-toned heels or sandals and minimal jewelry for a refined look that works for work or casual days out.

2. Casual Chic: Ankara Tops with Denim or Neutrals

A great way to tone down the boldness of Ankara is to combine it with staple pieces like jeans or a plain skirt. An off-shoulder or button-up Ankara blouse paired with dark denim or a black pencil skirt creates a balanced look that’s fashionable but not overwhelming. This outfit is perfect for brunches, daytime events, or laid-back hangouts.

3. Skirts That Speak Volumes—Subtly

An Ankara skirt can make a strong fashion statement even with a simple design. Opt for a high-waisted pencil or flared A-line skirt and match it with a plain, fitted top. Keep accessories minimal—a slim belt, delicate earrings, or a small crossbody bag—to let the print be the focus. Add flats or wedges for a comfortable yet classy finish.

4. The Sleek Ankara Jumpsuit

For those who want to combine comfort and sophistication, a tailored Ankara jumpsuit is a top-tier choice. Avoid fussy designs; instead, go for clean lines and a well-fitted silhouette. Whether it’s wide-legged or slim-fit, the key is balance—let the print shine without crowding the look with accessories.

5. Ankara Accessories: Small Touch, Big Impact

If you’re not ready to commit to full Ankara outfits, accessories are a fantastic way to start. Ankara headwraps, earrings, handbags, or shoes can elevate a basic outfit instantly. Wearing a white dress with an Ankara clutch or statement necklace can transform your look from simple to striking—without the need for an entire printed outfit.

6. Midi Dresses: Timeless and Tasteful

A midi-length Ankara dress exudes elegance with minimal effort. Whether it’s a wrap dress, shirt dress, or sleeveless style, the midi cut offers a graceful silhouette suitable for many occasions. Pair it with low heels or pointed flats and a structured handbag for a smart, clean look that never goes out of style.

Conclusion: Less Can Be More

Ankara fashion doesn’t need to be extravagant to make an impression. By embracing simplicity in cuts, color pairing, and accessories, you can let the beauty of the fabric speak for itself. Whether it’s a modest dress, a casual top, or just a pop of print in an accessory, Ankara offers endless possibilities for expressing style and culture with grace.

Ghana Sees Sharp Drop in Bounced Cheques After BoG Crackdown

Cheque

Ghana’s banking sector is witnessing a turnaround in payment discipline, with bounced cheques plunging over 15% year-on-year in 2024. ‘

The Bank of Ghana’s latest report reveals only 45,136 dud cheques were recorded down from 53,522 in 2023 attributing the decline to aggressive enforcement and public education campaigns.

“A dud cheque isn’t just inconvenience it’s a criminal offense,” the central bank warned, highlighting legal consequences under the Bank of Ghana Act.

Sustained messaging about credit score damage appears to have hit home: individual violations plummeted 53% (4,972 incidents), while corporate offenders dropped even more sharply at 66% (14,454 cases).

This progress reflects broader credit system reforms. Financial institutions now routinely check credit reports before approving loans, and public awareness of reporting mechanisms has grown.

For market traders and small businesses long burned by worthless paper, the shift brings tangible relief. Could this mark a cultural shift toward financial accountability?

The BoG vows to intensify monitoring and stakeholder collaboration. “These efforts are essential to maintain trust in our payment ecosystem,” the report concluded. As fintech expands nationwide, reliable cheque clearing remains vital for millions unbanked or wary of digital transactions.

New Villarreal signing Thomas Partey has completed his first training session after joining the club officially as a free agent earlier this week.

The reported two year deal sees the Ghanaian international midfielder return to Spain after excelling with Atletico Madrid prior to his move to English Premier League side Arsenal FC.

In a video posted on Villarreal’s X (formerly Twitter) page, Partey was spotted in Villarreal’s gear looking sharp and actively participating in the training session.

32 Year old Thomas Partey’s return to Spain has been engulfed in controversy due to the fallout from his ongoing legal issue over rape and sexual assault charges involving three women.

Five counts of rape involving two women and one count of sexual assault involving another women in England have been slapped on Partey.

The Black Stars Deputy Captain made an appearance at a Westminster Court on August 5 where he was granted conditional bail and as part of the bail conditions, he isn’t allowed to speak with any of the women involved in the case.

He is set to reappear in court on September 2 and his signing has drawn heavy criticism including a supporters Villarreal group.

Reconstitute helicopter crash probe panel; GAF can’t lead – BPS to Mahama

0

The Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to immediately reconstitute the investigation panel tasked with probing the August 6 helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two cabinet ministers.

In a statement issued on Friday, August 8, the BPS expressed concern over the president’s decision to have the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) lead the inquiry, warning that such an approach risks undermining transparency, independence, and public confidence.

“An institution cannot credibly investigate itself in a matter of this magnitude, particularly where public trust, national security, and the loss of high-ranking public officials are at stake,” the statement said.

The Bureau outlined three main objections to a military-led probe: potential conflict of interest since the GAF operated the aircraft; the likelihood of limited public disclosure due to the military’s culture of confidentiality; and the fact that global best practices — including ICAO Annex 13 — require such investigations to be conducted by independent accident investigation authorities.

Citing examples from the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia, the BPS stressed that internationally, military aircraft accidents involving public safety are investigated by independent bodies, often with military cooperation but without military control.

To ensure credibility and alignment with international standards, the Bureau recommended that the investigation panel be reconstituted to include:

  • An independent chairperson without operational or command ties to the GAF.

  • Civil aviation safety experts, both local and international.

  • Observers from Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee.

  • Representatives from independent safety advocacy bodies.

  • Technical advisors from ICAO or regional accident investigation bodies.

“This diverse, independent structure will not only meet international benchmarks but will also preserve the credibility of the investigation and uphold Ghana’s commitment to transparency and public accountability,” the Bureau stated.

Let’s not politicise helicopter tragedy – Acting Chief Justice

0

The Acting Chief Justice of Ghana, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has called on Ghanaians to remain united and avoid politicising the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight public servants on Wednesday, 6 August.

Speaking at the Ceremonial Gardens of the Presidency on Friday, August 8, where he laid a wreath and lit a candle in memory of the deceased, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie said the Judiciary shares in the pain of the nation.

“On behalf of the Judicial Service of the Judiciary, I released a statement of condolence to the President, the Government, the people of Ghana and the bereaved families,” he said.

“We are here to commiserate with the President by laying our flowers,” he added, standing alongside other state officials and members of the public gathered to honour the fallen.

Referring to his earlier message of condolence, which President John Mahama echoed in his national address, the Acting Chief Justice noted, “These gallant men died in the cause of duty, so we should forge ahead as a national unit and not politicise their deaths.”

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, with a call to reflection, urged citizens to draw inspiration from the lives of the deceased. “We should all have recalls of the legacies they’ve left behind and serve our nation to the best of our ability,” he said.

The Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter crash, which happened on Wednesday, August 6, at the Adansi Akrofuom district, claimed the lives of eight, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, among six others who were on an official assignment.

The second day of the flower-laying and candle-lighting ceremony in honour of eight persons who died in the tragic helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region was filled with many emotional scenes as the nation continues to come to terms with the incident.

The First Lady, Lordina Mahama, and several Ministers of State, including the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, took their turns at the ceremony.

The most emotional scene occurred when the First Lady arrived at the Ceremonial Garden in front of the Jubilee House, where the ceremony was taking place.

Lordina Mahama, minutes after arriving at the garden, held the hand of the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, and began wailing.

She clung to her husband’s Chief of Staff as she could be heard moaning. The First Lady’s children, Farida Mahama and Sharaf Mahama, could be seen trying to console her.

After some minutes, Lordina Mahama composed herself and walked to receive a bouquet of flowers from two military women, accompanied by her children and Julius Debrah.

The military women laid the bouquet in front of an edifice displaying the images of the eight victims, with the inscription, “Ghana Mourns.”

‘Sydney Sweeney’s jeans ad isn’t cheeky branding, it echoes a dangerous past’

0

From wartime posters to 1930s magazines, the ‘ideal woman’ has always been eugenics coded but I think the American Eagle ad is the worst as it mirrors a disturbing past of beauty ideals shaped by racism

Whether it was a cheeky word play, the impact on society is damaging

When Sydney Sweeney’s Good Genes American Eagle ad popped up on my feed, I couldn’t help but feel this ad was more than just a play on words.

In what Donald Trump is calling the “the hottest ad out there”, the blonde hair blued eyed Euphoria star is dressed in double denim. Deadpan, she says: “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality, and even eye colour. My jeans are blue.” A voiceover follows: “Sydney Sweeney has great genes.”

Elsewhere, billboard show Sydney lounging in her Canadian tuxedo with the words: “Sydney Sweeney has great genes.” The word “genes” is crossed out and replaced with “jeans.”

The backlash has been loud. Some people praised it as a ‘clever’ bit of wordplay, nothing to be offended by. But I see it as a nod to the eugenics ideology, the belief that the human race could be “improved” by promoting certain traits – traits historically tied to whiteness. Let me be clear: There’s nothing great about recycling a slogan that sounds like it’s been lifted from eugenics for dummies.

Driveway rule change will allow millions to benefit from technology

The ad has since been removed from the brand’s social media

The previous ad's was never as obvious as the Sydney Sweeney one
930s U.S. magazine Physical Culture cover asking: “Shall We Breed or Sterilize Defectives?”

When I compare all three, the Sydney Sweeney ad feels the most blatant. There’s nothing to decode. It’s bold, it’s polished, and it hits exactly the right nerve to go viral. For American Eagle, the rage bait has paid off, as their stock skyrocketed 28 percent in premarket trading after an $85 million operating loss in Q1, this year, according to INC.

I can’t help but think the boom American Eagle have experienced off the back of this ad is less about the pretty woman fronting the campaign, and more because it aligned with the values of a growing and vocal, conservative crowd.

As debate erupted on TikTok, one viral video says: “If you’re not media illiterate, you probably think this is harmless. However, this perpetuates a long line of racism and eugenics that has been present in not just America but all over the world.”

“In the extremely conservative climate we’re in today where right-wing, white nationalism and patriotism is rising, this advert is a dog whistle to the racists out there, confirming their way of thinking and way of life is correct.”

Her family wore hats in the 'MAGA' style
Her family wore hats in the ‘MAGA’ style

But what unsettles me the most is how quick people are to invalidate the message. I’ve seen messages that claim the advert is “not that deep” and simply “clever marketing”. While I can’t deny the wordplay is clever, I think this language, imagery and political landscape that we’re currently in rubs salt in the wound.

It echoes a history where desirability was tied to race, “purity,” and who society deemed “naturally beautiful” and, more dangerously, who they believed deserved to reproduce. That is “deep”.

It’s difficult to ignore Sydney’s political alignment, too. Her family wearing ‘MAGA’ style hats reading ‘Make 60 great again,’ which left fans questioning her political stance and more recently, Florida Department of State records confirmed Sydney registered as a Republican voter in Monroe County on June 14, 2024.

Ultimately, this isn’t about competitiveness or women tearing women down. It’s about holding brands and those in the public eye accountable – especially when they play into dangerous ideologies, intentionally or otherwise.

Vigil at Takoradi Air Force Base honours fallen helicopter crew

0

A solemn vigil has been held at the Takoradi Air Force Base tonight in memory of three Ghana Air Force personnel who perished in last week’s military helicopter crash.

The fallen crew members, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, were all based at the Takoradi Air Force Base.

They lost their lives alongside five senior government officials, including Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister, Murtala Mohamme, when their helicopter went down in Brofoyedru Sikaman in the Ashanti Region.

The ceremony, which took place at the Takoradi Airport, brought together service personnel, grieving families, and members of the public to pay their last respects.

Candlelight tributes, solemn music, and moments of silence honoured the courage and dedication of the crew, who were on official duty transporting government officials to Obuasi for a flagship mining sector programme.

The crash, which claimed eight lives in total, has plunged the nation into mourning, with flags flying at half-mast and state burial arrangements underway.

MzGee called on Ghanaians to show empathy in these times MzGee called on Ghanaians to show empathy in these times

In the wake of the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two Ghanaian ministers, media personality MzGee has shared an emotional message with her listeners and viewers.

On her show Gee O’Clock, the host said, “It’s difficult to post happy content at this point, not because we cannot, but because a brother’s pain is our pain. In fact, it should be your pain.”

“What are we truly here for? So, what’s all this struggle for?” she asked.

Beyond the questions and sorrow, MzGee called on Ghanaians to show empathy during this difficult time.

She reflected on the pain of the victims’ families, including a two-month-old baby left behind by one of the fallen officers and another victim who had celebrated his marriage only weeks earlier.

“You cannot hear the story and not have any emotions. No. No. God have mercy on us,” she said.

MzGee urged Ghanaians to move beyond blame, conspiracy theories, and divisive commentary.

“This is not a time for a blame game. This is a time for reflection,” she emphasised.

She invited her audience to embrace values such as forgiveness, community, and grace.

“Forgiving people doesn’t mean you have to let them back into your life. You forgive them for your own peace of mind. Show empathy. Treat others well in their down times,” she advised.

As tributes continue to pour in for the fallen public servants and military personnel, MzGee encouraged Ghanaians to hold on to their faith and belief in humanity.

“This is the time for us to hold on to our belief,” she concluded. “I believe in God, and that’s the only thing I can hold on to. It’s not that you’re special—it’s that mercy is keeping us.”

What happened on Dark Wednesday?

These clubs’ rich histories and ability to produce Ballon d’Or winners solidify their status as football’s elite, with the 2025 ceremony on September 22.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi held talks in Cairo on Thursday with Sudan’s transitional Prime Minister Kamil Idris, where they discussed efforts to resolve the Sudanese crisis and restore stability in the country, the Egyptian presidency said in a statement.

“The two sides discussed efforts to settle the Sudanese crisis and achieve the aspirations of the Sudanese people for peace and stability,” the statement said.

Sisi reiterated “Egypt’s firm and supportive position on Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.” He also emphasised “Egypt’s full support for all efforts aimed at achieving security and stability in Sudan and ending the current humanitarian suffering, in a way that preserves the resources of the Sudanese people.” The two sides also discussed avenues of cooperation between the two countries in the field of reconstruction in Sudan.

This is Idris’s first foreign visit since assuming office in May, as his country has been gripped by a deadly internal conflict since April 2023.

The deadly conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has killed tens of thousands and displaced several million people both internally and externally, triggering one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, according to the United Nations.

Ghana’s Cedi Surge Masks Underlying Weaknesses, Warns Advisory

0

Cash Cedi
Cash Cedi

Ghana’s cedi has staged one of Africa’s sharpest recoveries this year, soaring 42.6% against the US dollar since January but analysts caution this strength rests on fragile, temporary pillars.

A new report by economic consultancy EM Advisory reveals the rally, which also saw gains of 30.3% against the British pound and 25.6% against the euro, stems largely from record-high gold prices, IMF bailout disbursements, and heavy central bank intervention rather than durable economic fixes.

While welcoming the reprieve after years of depreciation, the advisory stresses structural flaws remain unaddressed. Ghana still battles productivity gaps, heavy import reliance, and fiscal pressures. “Currency markets are inherently volatile,” notes the report.

“Sharp appreciations can be as destabilising as depreciations if they outpace underlying fundamentals.” The government’s new Gold Board (GoldBod), aimed at capturing more export revenue officially, hasn’t yet resolved these core vulnerabilities.

Even the IMF has urged restraint. It warned Accra against overusing forex interventions, fearing the economy could be exposed when external supports like IMF financing taper off or if gold prices retreat. With debt servicing costs looming, the cedi’s gains could rapidly reverse, potentially undermining exports and spooking investors.

Still, EM Advisory sees a narrow opening. This “precious window of opportunity” must drive reforms for long-term stability. The real question, it concludes, is whether Ghana builds resilience during this breather or simply celebrates until the tide turns.

Stunning Kente Bridal Looks That Inspire

0

Kente, the vibrantly colored and intricately woven fabric, is far more than just a textile—it’s a profound symbol of heritage, history, and pride, especially in Ghana, where it originated. Known for its striking geometric patterns and rich symbolism, Kente has transcended generations, becoming a staple in both traditional and modern African celebrations. In weddings, particularly, Kente holds a cherished place, offering brides an opportunity to showcase elegance while honoring their roots.

As Ghanaian fashion continues to evolve, Kente has emerged as a centerpiece in bridal couture. Whether used in full gowns, accents, or modern cuts, Kente transforms wedding attire into meaningful, wearable art. As the Ghanaian proverb goes, “Cloth is to the African what monuments are to Westerners”—a powerful reminder of Kente’s cultural resonance.

Here are some exquisite Kente bridal styles that celebrate this heritage while embracing contemporary beauty.

1. The Classic Kente Gown

Nothing speaks tradition louder than a full-length gown made entirely of Kente. These gowns are often custom-woven with colors and patterns representing love, prosperity, unity, or family. Brides can opt for various silhouettes, from sleek mermaid cuts that highlight curves to regal ball gowns that bring out a queen-like presence. Embellishments like pearls, sequins, or gold-thread embroidery enhance the richness of the fabric, creating a bridal look that’s both timeless and unforgettable.

2. Kente Meets Lace: A Modern Fusion

For the bride who seeks a blend of cultural authenticity and modern flair, combining Kente with lace is a stylish solution. Many brides pair a Kente bodice with a flowing lace skirt or incorporate lace sleeves into a Kente gown. The delicacy of lace softens the boldness of Kente, creating a balanced, romantic aesthetic. This fusion also allows brides to play with textures and designs while maintaining cultural symbolism.

3. Kente as a Statement Accessory

Minimalist brides who prefer classic white gowns need not forgo tradition. Kente can be subtly but meaningfully incorporated as a sash, shawl, or headwrap. A vibrant Kente veil or a wide belt adds a pop of color and identity to an otherwise neutral look. Even small touches—like custom Kente shoes or a clutch—can pay homage to one’s roots without overpowering the overall aesthetic.

4. Off-Shoulder & Strapless Kente Gowns

Bold and feminine, off-shoulder or strapless designs are rising in popularity among modern brides. When crafted from Kente, these cuts allow the fabric to shine while showing off the bride’s décolletage and shoulders. The result is a confident and contemporary bridal look with strong traditional ties. Paired with statement jewelry, this style radiates poise and pride.

5. Coordinated Kente for Bridesmaids

A cohesive bridal party clad in Kente enhances the cultural ambiance of a wedding. Bridesmaids can be styled in similar or complementing Kente patterns and hues, creating a beautiful visual harmony. Groomsmen can join in the tradition by wearing Kente ties, waistcoats, or pocket squares. This coordinated approach not only looks stunning but also symbolizes unity and shared heritage.

6. Sleek Kente in Modern Silhouettes

Today’s brides are not afraid to experiment, and Kente provides the perfect canvas. From elegant two-piece sets and jumpsuits to asymmetrical gowns and minimalist A-line dresses, modern silhouettes breathe new life into the classic fabric. These contemporary interpretations give brides the freedom to express individuality while staying connected to ancestral roots.

Final Thoughts

Wearing Kente on your wedding day is more than a fashion choice—it’s a tribute to history, identity, and family. Whether you choose a full traditional ensemble or opt for subtle accents, Kente allows every bride to infuse personal meaning into her wedding attire.

Stonebwoy described the incident as a national tragedy Stonebwoy described the incident as a national tragedy

Award-winning dancehall artiste Stonebwoy has expressed profound grief over the tragic helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including prominent political figures and military personnel.

The incident occurred on August 6, 2025, when a Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9EH helicopter crashed in the Ashanti Region, killing all eight people on board. Among the victims were Minister of Defence Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Minister of Environment, Science and Technology Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

The tragedy sent shockwaves across Ghana, with tributes pouring in from around the world.

In an emotional interview with TV3 on August 7, 2025, Stonebwoy described the crash as a national tragedy. He revealed his personal connections to the two ministers, saying they were father figures to him.

“Honourable Murtala Mohammed was a big supporter of BHIM Nation, a father figure. The former Ashanti Regional Minister was also like family to me. It’s difficult to comprehend; waking up to the news was crazy,” he said.

He added that the timing deepened his sorrow, as August marks the 10th anniversary of his mother’s passing.

“This is the tenth year of the month my mother passed away, so I was already in a certain mood. And then all these were added on. It’s not easy,” he said.

Stonebwoy fondly recalled his relationship with the late minister, referencing an interview where the late leader publicly praised his work.

“My relationship with Alhaji Dr Murtala was like that of a father and son. We spoke on the phone many times. What actually heightened it was when he was in an interview and expressed his love and support for my brand.

“He showed that from his level as a politician, he could still appreciate reggae and dancehall while serving the nation,” he noted.

Calling for action, Stonebwoy urged the government to prioritise accident prevention.

“This isn’t just a family loss; Ghana has been hit. The state must employ measures to avoid such disasters,” he concluded.

How Anderlecht teammates ‘saved’ Jeremy Doku from a ban – Father reveals

Jeremy Doku (L) and his dad Jeremy Doku (L) and his dad

Long before Jeremy Doku became one of Europe’s most dazzling wingers, he was pulling cheeky moves at Anderlecht, not just with the ball, but apparently to stay on the field.

As his father, David Doku, recently revealed, a youthful mix-up helped the then-teen avoid a suspension after picking up a yellow card in a match against Mechelen.

Doku had just been booked, and with a vital Bruges tie looming, one foul away from sitting out a playoff-impacting game.

Teammates quickly concocted a clever ruse: after Doku’s infringement, they nudged another player directly into the referee’s vision, so the official mistakenly booked that player instead.

Watch Jeremy Doku’s romantic proposal to his girlfriend Shireen

David explained how teammate ingenuity intervened.

“So there was a foul, and the foul was on Jeremy. They didn’t want Jeremy to get a yellow. They want him to be in the next game, so they pushed somebody to the ref and said, ‘this is the one who fouled’, so they gave him a yellow, and Jeremy escaped from that yellow card,” he recalled.

That quick-thinking saving act wasn’t just a moment of mischief, it underscored how highly his teammates valued him. They recognised early that keeping Jeremy on the pitch was worth bending the rules a little.

Doku joined Anderlecht’s prestigious youth academy at around age 9. He rose swiftly through the ranks and made his first-team debut in May 2018, just shy of his 17th birthday.

The Belgian prodigy soon earned a promotion to Rennes in 2020, where his blistering dribbles and acceleration grabbed attention across Europe.

US pauses most visa applications from Zimbabwe

0

The inside of terminal four at John F Kennedy Airport The inside of terminal four at John F Kennedy Airport

The United States has announced a pause on all routine visa applications for citizens of Zimbabwe.

The State Department said in a statement on Thursday that the US embassy in Zimbabwe would pause all routine visa services starting from Friday “while we address concerns with the Government of Zimbabwe”.

The embassy described the measure as temporary and part of the Trump administration’s efforts to “prevent visa overstay and misuse”.

Most diplomatic and official visas would be exempt from the pause, the US said.

The US has enforced new travel restrictions on citizens from several African countries under President Donald Trump’s broader immigration enforcement policies.

In June, the US put in place travel bans on citizens from 12 countries, seven of them in Africa.

It increased restrictions on seven other nations, three of them African.

The US has also demanded that 36 countries, the majority of them in Africa, improve their vetting of travellers or face a ban on their citizens visiting the United States.

Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia were all on that list of 36 countries asked to improve their citizens’ travel documentation and take steps to address the status of their nationals who are in the US illegally.

“The Trump Administration is protecting our nation and our citizens by upholding the highest standards of national security and public safety through our visa process,” the US State Department said on Thursday.

The announcement came days after the US unveiled a pilot project requiring citizens of two other African countries, Malawi and Zambia, to pay a bond of up to $15,000 for tourist or business visas.

The bond will be forfeited if the applicant stays in the US after their visa expires.

The new bond policy announced on Tuesday requires Malawians and Zambians to pay bonds of $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000 as part of their application for a tourist or business visa to the US.

Under the programme, citizens of those countries must also arrive and depart at one of three airports: Boston’s Logan International Airport, New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport or Dulles International Airport near Washington, DC.

The visa bond pilot programme will start on August 20, the State Department said.

Helicopter crash: Ghana Institute of Foresters mourns tragic demise of victims

0

As Ghana mourns the tragic loss of eight persons, including two cabinet ministers in a helicopter crash, tributes continue to trickle in from both international and domestic organisations to commiserate with bereaved families.

The Ghana Institute of Foresters (GIF) has extended its condolences to the families as it joins the country in mourning the deceased persons comprising five high-profile government officials and three gallant soldiers of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The deceased were traveling to Obuasi for an event aimed at ending illegal small-scale mining when the helicopter they were aboard crashed into the Dampia Range Forest Reserve near Sikaman Brofoyedru in the Adansi Akrofuom district of the Ashanti Region.

In a statement, the GIF expressed its deepest commiserations as it highlighted the gallant efforts of the eight in contributing their quota to national development.

“These gallant men were responding to a national call which aims, among others, to regularise and sanitise mining in our landscapes (on and off Reserves) through the formation of cooperatives and acquisition of skills, to ensure environmental conservation, responsible and sustainable mining practices in host mining communities, which are critical issues confronting the nation in recent times,” the statement read.

It continued that: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the devastating news and the irreparable loss of the two hard-working and dedicated Cabinet Ministers, and the loss of the six other committed public servants at this critical period of our national development”.

The GIF extended sincere condolences also to the President and Government, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology and Innovation, Parliament, the Armed Forces, and the National Security for the tragic loss.

Crepe Material Short Gown Styles Perfect for Chubby Ladies

0

When it comes to finding the perfect balance between comfort and style, crepe material short gowns stand out as a fantastic option—especially for chubby ladies who want to feel confident, elegant, and effortlessly fashionable. Crepe fabric is known for its soft texture, slight stretch, and graceful drape, making it ideal for flattering curvier body types.

One of the most flattering styles is the A-line short gown. This classic silhouette flares gently from the waist, helping to create a balanced, feminine figure. A-line gowns made from crepe fabric don’t cling to the body, making them both comfortable and stylish. You can enhance the look with subtle details like ruffled hems, pleats, or a decorative waist belt.

For a chic yet modest outfit, consider an off-shoulder crepe gown. This style highlights the collarbones and shoulders, drawing attention upward and creating an elongating effect. The softness of crepe complements the relaxed cut, offering a comfortable option perfect for special events. Pair with bold earrings and stylish heels to complete the look.

Ruched short gowns are another excellent choice. Ruched designs gather fabric at the waist or sides, helping to define the waistline while adding texture. This creates a slimming effect that enhances your curves beautifully. These gowns are versatile enough for both casual outings and evening occasions.

To add a touch of drama, go for a crepe short gown with flared or bell sleeves. These sleeves bring movement and elegance, especially when paired with a fitted bodice to maintain balance. This combination ensures comfort without sacrificing sophistication.

Pleated gowns in crepe are also a great pick. Pleats offer a structured look that skims over the body without clinging, providing ease of movement and style. Strategic pleating can even create the illusion of a more defined silhouette.

Finally, a V-neckline is universally flattering. It elongates the neck and draws attention upward, which can visually slim the figure. When combined with the natural flow of crepe, this neckline becomes a go-to choice for both daywear and formal events.

“I am not happy at all, and I feel terrible that my comments caused pain to many people and families. I am sincerely sorry and ask for their forgiveness,” he said.

He revealed that the tragedy struck him personally, as one of the victims, Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, was a close associate.

“My brother Omane Boamah is not someone I can betray. I was devastated when I heard of his passing. My reaction came from the pain of knowing that people are dying almost every day in this country, and we seem to have normalised it.

“We have lost many through road accidents, and yet we don’t value lives enough. That frustration and sorrow are what came out in my words,” Mr. Akpaloo clarified.

The crash claimed the lives of Dr. Boamah and seven others, including Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

Also among the deceased were Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, and three Air Force personnel: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The Z-9 helicopter was en route to Obuasi when it lost radar contact, prompting a swift military search. Investigations are ongoing following the recovery of the aircraft’s black box.

The remains of the victims have been transported to South Africa for forensic DNA analysis.

Ghana’s Fiscal Progress Undercut by Public Sector Leaks, Warns Report

Ghana’s hard-won economic stability faces erosion from persistent governance gaps and project mismanagement, according to a new EM Advisory assessment.

While applauding President John Mahama’s early fiscal strides including a 1.1% GDP primary surplus, expenditure cuts 14.3% below budget, and slowing inflation the report stresses that these gains remain fragile.

Chronic inefficiencies threaten to unravel progress, notably a “disturbing pattern” of abandoned projects wasting billions. EM Advisory highlights how political transitions in Ghana’s multiparty system often strand infrastructure mid-construction. “Unattended projects drain national resources,” the analysis states, urging a nonpartisan framework to ensure continuity.

The consultancy flags alarming fiscal leaks: a GHC1.3 billion wage overrun in six months, 14,000 unverified payroll workers, and contractors securing loans without delivering work. Worse still, of the GHC67 billion arrears inherited from 2024, audits show GHC3.6 billion lacked documentation entirely, with another GHC27.3 billion still unvalidated.

“Stabilisation is not transformation,” cautions the report, noting temporary currency relief won’t shield Ghana when debt repayments peak. Without urgent reforms to boost accountability and project execution, the nation risks sliding back into boom-bust cycles. As one Accra economist put it: “Macro discipline means little if the state machinery can’t deliver basics efficiently.” The question lingers—can Ghana fix its engine before the clock runs out?

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has called for national unity and rejected any attempt to politicise the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight public officials on Wednesday, 6 August 2025, at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region.

Speaking after laying a wreath at the Ceremonial Gardens at Jubilee House on Friday, Dr Bawumia described the incident as a “national tragedy” that had plunged the country into mourning. He stressed that the loss affected every Ghanaian, regardless of political affiliation.

“Well, I think the grief comes to all Ghanaians. This is not just me or the NDC, it is all of us. This is a national tragedy. Eight public officials on official duty… had this tragic accident and they all lost their lives. This is not a partisan issue, it is a national tragedy. Regardless, you should expect full participation because it is our national duty to fully participate,” he said.

Dr Bawumia, who was accompanied by senior NPP figures including Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Akosua Manu, Hassan Tampuli and Mohammed Amin Adam, extended condolences to President John Dramani Mahama, the government, the Ghana Armed Forces and the bereaved families.

He revealed that he had visited three of the victims’ families earlier in the day and would continue his visits on Saturday. “Ghana is in mourning… this is personal to all Ghanaians and I just want to extend my condolences,” he noted.

Those who died in the crash included Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, NDC National Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong, and former parliamentary candidate Mr Samuel Aboagye. The three Ghana Air Force officers who also perished were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flight Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The officials were travelling to a national event linked to the launch of an alternative livelihood programme to combat illegal mining when the crash occurred.

The government has declared a three-day national mourning period, with a vigil and memorial service scheduled for Saturday, August 9. Samples of the victims’ remains have been flown to South Africa for DNA analysis to aid in their identification for burial.

Ghana Backs Women Exporters with US$15 Million Boost

Economic Exporters Forum

Ghana is investing $15 million to elevate women-led businesses within its non-traditional export sector, marking a strategic shift toward inclusive trade growth.

The Federation of Associations of Ghanaian Exporters (FAGE) partnered with women-focused agribusiness group Guzakuza to launch “WISE Exports 2.0,” a four-year initiative targeting 300 female entrepreneurs.

The programme aims to generate $15 million in export sales and create over 1,500 jobs by 2029. It will focus on value chains like cassava, shea, cocoa, and fashion accessories—sectors where women face underrepresentation despite high potential. “This is a transformational movement for inclusive wealth,” stressed FAGE’s Youth and Gender Coordinator, Emmanuel Ansah-Amprofi.

FAGE CEO Abdul-Karim Dubiure called the move a “bold turning point” for Ghana’s trade ambitions. The initiative merges FAGE’s policy expertise, Guzakuza’s grassroots training, and digital marketplace BuyAfricaMade to tackle key barriers: scarce export training, limited financing, and poor global market access.

Guzakuza founder Nana Adjoa Sefa emphasized urgency: “Women power Africa’s growth quietly. It’s time they get the systems to go global.” With $3 million needed for initial rollout, the project seeks co-funding from investors and development agencies. It aligns closely with UN goals on gender equality and sustainable growth.

I don’t think love is for me in this lifetime

Tiwa Savage is a Nigerian musician Tiwa Savage is a Nigerian musician

True love may be the theme of many of her songs, but for Tiwa Savage, it is a feeling that she is yet to encounter.

In an interview with British-Nigerian media personality ZeZe Mills, Tiwa spoke about her past romantic experiences and how they have shaped her view of love.

According to the musician, despite her fame and success, she has never truly felt loved in a romantic relationship.

Looking back on her marriage to Tunji Balogun, also known as Teebillz, which lasted from 2013 to 2018, Tiwa said she once believed what she had was love, but now sees things differently.

Tiwa Savage, who is a mother to 10-year-old Jamil, said the only pure and genuine love she has ever known is the one she shares with her son.

According to her, this love is real and unconditional, unlike what she has experienced in her romantic life.

“I don’t think I’ve been loved for a very long time. I don’t think I’ve experienced true love apart from my son. Every time I look back at my relationship, I realise that it wasn’t love it was just infatuation. At the time, I thought it was love though, but it wasn’t,” she said.

After years of trying to find a partner who truly understands and loves her, the singer said she has now come to terms with the possibility that love might not be in her destiny.

“I don’t think I’ve experienced that soulmate thing, I’ve tried over and over again. I don’t think love is for me in this lifetime,” she added.
