Ghana’s economy to exceed its 2025 targets – IC Research

IC Research forcasts Ghana's economy to outperform its current targets IC Research forcasts Ghana’s economy to outperform its current targets

The latest report from IC Research has shown that Ghana’s economy is on course to outperform its 2025 macroeconomic targets, driven by strong first-half results.

According to the report, improvements in inflation, exchange rate stability, interest rates, first-quarter GDP growth, and gross international reserves were the key contributors to the positive outlook.

Reviewing the 2025 Mid-Year Budget, IC Research noted that fiscal performance in the first six months delivered a “sizable fiscal adjustment,” surpassing both government targets and its forecasts.

“Our analysis shows renewed discipline in spending and a halt in arrears accumulation, supported by solid tax revenue, despite weaker non-tax revenue. Given the stronger-than-expected fiscal results, the government remains confident in meeting end-2025 macro-fiscal goals, all of which were retained,” the report said.

The report added that the robust first-half performance has alleviated short-term fiscal concerns for 2024, although it cautioned that execution risks remain.

However, authorities have identified key threats and proposed credible mitigation strategies.

Total revenue and grants for the first half of 2025 stood at GH¢99.3 billion, or 7.1% of GDP, 3.2% below target but 8.3% above IC Research’s forecast, boosted by enhanced tax compliance.

FBI announces extradition of three Ghanaians in $100 million international fraud scheme

According to the FBI, the trio allegedly belonged to a transnational criminal organisation

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the United States Department of Justice have announced the extradition of three Ghanaian nationals accused of orchestrating a large-scale international fraud scheme that defrauded victims of more than $100 million.

The suspects, identified as Isaac Boateng popularly known as Kofi Boat, Inusah Ahmed and Derrick Van Yeboah, were extradited from Ghana to face charges in the United States.

According to the FBI, the trio allegedly belonged to a transnational criminal organisation engaged in romance scams and business email compromise (BEC) operations.

“These actors were allegedly part of an international criminal organisation that conducted romance scams and business email compromises, stealing over $100 million from dozens of victims,” the FBI stated in an official post on Thursday, August 8, 2025.

The alleged scheme involved tricking victims, both individuals and businesses, into sending large sums of money under false pretences.

The FBI has intensified its crackdown on such cyber-enabled crimes in recent years, working with law enforcement partners across borders to bring perpetrators to justice.

Romance scams typically involve cultivating fake online relationships to exploit victims financially, while BEC schemes target companies by compromising business email accounts to redirect payments to fraudulent bank accounts.

FDA not out to frustrate businesses – Regional Head

0

Mr Abel Ndego, the Acting Upper East Regional Head of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), says the mandate of the Authority is not to frustrate businesses.

He said the Authority’s mandate was rather to help business operators to grow their businesses within the framework of regulation, saying, “As long as we work together to ensure public health and safety, you can always be assured that you will do your business without stress.”

Mr Ndego told pharmacy and Over-The-Counter (OTC) medicine sellers at a day’s workshop organized by the FDA to sensitize them on the Authority’s guidelines for pharmacy and OTC medicine operators to promote public health and safety through responsible retail practices.

He said if the operators engaged in acts that threatened public health and safety, they could be sure that the FDA would deal with them, and appealed to them to work within the framework of the law.

“Avoid any form of illegal activities. We have visited facilities and seen OTCs and some pharmacies dispensing tramadol above 100milligram (mg) strength. Tramadol used to be an OTC medicine, but it is now a controlled drug. So there is no way an OTC is expected to dispense tramadol,” he said.

Mr Ndego said the only tramadol strength approved by the FDA in Ghana were the 50 and 100mg, and that there was a total ban on any dosage strength above 100mg in Ghana.

He noted that only pharmacy shops were accredited to dispense the 50 and 100mg of tramadol, adding that it must be dispensed to persons with valid prescriptions by qualified medical officers.

“In fact per the guidelines that Parliament has approved for tramadol regulation, even with prescription, the prescriber must indicate not just his name, but his membership number and if it’s found out that the prescriber is not in good standing, that prescription becomes invalid.

“That is how serious the regulation is now. And so for a medical doctor to issue a prescription for tramadol, they must be sure that the person needs it. Now the law is getting more stringent that when we get you with tramadol, is not enough to just fine you. They are pushing for prosecution,” the Acting Head said.

Mr Ndego said even though the FDA had prosecuted some people, it was not a pleasant process.

“It is not something we enjoy doing at all. We always want to make sure that we have a very cordial relationship with our clients.”

Some participants who spoke to the Ghana News Agency after the training, described the initiative by the FDA as “educative and eye-opening”, and called for more of such training programmes to enhance regulatory compliance.

Ms Gloria Akos Amoh, an OTC medicine seller, said, “I have learnt a lot, especially on the issue of tramadol, and my memory is refreshed on some of the guidelines and regulations. It was a very impactful training programme.”

Former Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu, has categorically denied making insensitive statements about the victims of the helicopter crash.

A social media post alleged that he said the NDC could grieve for the victims, but the NPP would be campaigning.

However, in an interview with Joy FM, Kyei-Mensah Bonsu vehemently refuted the allegations, saying, “I have never made any such statement… I cannot, and you know that this is most unlike me.”

He emphasised that the tragedy should be seen as a national bereavement.

Kyei-Mensah Bonsu explained that he had called for prayers for the deceased ministers and military officers in meetings, acknowledging their service to the Republic of Ghana.

He said, “I’ve had three meetings today, and at the commencement of all the meetings, I’ve called for a prayer for the ministers of state that we have lost.”

He expressed disappointment that someone would twist his words and make false allegations, adding that “I don’t know how any person of good conscience would twist this and make this post. Well, as far as that fellow is concerned, I will leave him in the charge of God. God in the fullness of time will judge him, but I haven’t made any such thing,” he said.

The helicopter had on board the Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah and the Environment, Science, and Technology Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

Others were: Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna; former Ashanti Regional Minister, Samuel Sarpong; and Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate.

Members of the helicopter’s crew were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Malin Twum-Ampadu, and Sgt. Ernest Addo Mensah

Government targets $1.2 billion investment for garment sector by 2030

Government aims to attract US$1.2 billion in new investments to create 150,000 Government aims to attract US$1.2 billion in new investments to create 150,000

Government aims to attract US$1.2 billion in new investments to create 150,000 jobs in the garment and textiles industry by 2030.

It also plans to revive cotton cultivation across 50,000 hectares to support local raw material supply.

Samson Ahi, Deputy Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, disclosed this at a stakeholder validation workshop on the draft Textiles and Garments Manufacturing Policy in Accra.

He said the policy would provide a coherent and competitive framework to attract investment, enhance productivity, and position Ghana as a sourcing hub for ethical and sustainable apparel manufacturing.

“The draft policy proposes bold interventions ranging from the establishment of five world-class industrial parks to the creation of dedicated funds for cotton development and textile upgradation, to the provision of fiscal incentives and concessional tariffs for manufacturers,” he stated.

Ahi described the sector as both a cultural emblem and a strategic anchor of the Government’s Industrialisation Agenda, with potential to generate employment, especially for women and youth, while boosting export diversification and sustainable development.

“Our garment export sub-sector, although growing steadily, is yet to reach its full potential. At the same time, we face the dual challenges of increasing imports of finished garments and the erosion of domestic production capacity,” he added.

He urged stakeholders to help revitalise Ghana’s textile legacy and unlock the full potential of the garments sector.

Dr Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, also called on stakeholders to take ownership of the policy.

“Don’t just validate, validate with a reason. If there are things that are lacking to give it the quality of a private drive, please put it in,” he said.

In the wake of the tragic helicopter crash that took the lives of eight individuals, including key government officials, Dr Ken Ashigbey, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, has chastised politically exposed individuals involved in illegal mining activities.

The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

I was scheduled to be on crashed helicopter – Asiedu Nketiah

0

National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has revealed that he was initially scheduled to be aboard the helicopter that crashed in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, killing eight people, including two cabinet ministers.

The crash which happened in the Adansi area claimed the lives of Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah; Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, NDC Vice Chairman, Dr. Samuel Sarpong; and five others.

Asiedu Nketiah disclosed that a last-minute change of plans meant that Dr. Sarpong took his place on the trip to Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Co-operative Mining and Skills Development Programme (COMSDEP).

Speaking while commiserating with one of the bereaved families, he said: “Allah does what he wants. I was supposed to be on the flight, and last minute, I directed my vice chairman, Dr. Sarpong, to go and stand in for the party, and he accepted it.”

Mr Asiedu Nketiah urged bereaved families to find solace in their faith, describing the tragedy as a reminder of life’s unpredictability.

Mr. Asiedu Nketiah reflected on the circumstances that led to the death of Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and seven others stating, “In your human ways, you may be thinking that if I had not sent Sarpong, maybe he would be living. But who knows? God might have decided that if this is his time, he will be knocked down by a trotro [commercial bus] in Accra. So, we don’t question what Allah wants to do. So, in all things, we give thanks to him.”

He added that while the loss is immense, it is possible that “if it didn’t happen, something worse might have happened,” encouraging mourners to draw comfort from that perspective.

Dr. Sarpong’s passing, Mr. Nketiah said, leaves a significant void in the NDC, describing his decision to stand in for him as a final act of selfless service to the party and the nation.

Authorities are continuing investigations into the cause of the crash.

The eight victims were:

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence

Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, and MP for Tamale Central

Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator

Dr. Samuel Sarpong, National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)

Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate

Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala

Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu

Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah

A flower-laying ceremony which started on Thursday, August 7 is part of a series of national mourning events leading up to the state burial scheduled for August 15, 2025, and continues on Saturday, August 9.

Ibrahim Alhassan Reveals Murtala Mohammed Spiritual Warning to Journalist

0

As tributes continue to pour in following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the life of Hon. Murtala Mohammed and other military officials, Ibrahim Alhassan IB, Head of the Political Desk at EIB Network, has delivered a moving tribute that paints a deeply human portrait of the late parliamentarian.

During a heartfelt segment on EIB Newsroom Live, Alhassan revealed that one of Murtala Mohammed’s most enduring qualities was his constant spiritual reminder to journalists working in Ghana’s Parliament.

Murtala always reminded us journalists in Parliament to be mindful of our Maker,” he said. “It wasn’t just something he said in passing. It was a theme of his life whether during heated debates, quiet moments in the corridors, or even informal banter. He never let us forget that we are answerable to a higher power.”

The late Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, known for his fiery debates, principled stands, and unapologetic honesty, was among those on board the ill-fated military helicopter that crashed near the Akyem Oda forest region. The incident, which has been described as one of the darkest days in Ghana’s recent political and military history, has thrown the country into deep mourning.

But beyond the official eulogies and political condolences, Ibrahim Alhassan’s tribute provides a rare glimpse into the man behind the microphone a legislator who, despite his strong political voice, carried a deep reverence for spirituality and morality.

In Parliament, you see all kinds of personalities some driven by ambition, others by duty. But Murtala stood out,” Alhassan said. “He wasn’t perfect, but he had a conscience. And he wanted us the journalists covering every word and movement to have one too.”

Colleagues from across the political divide have echoed similar sentiments in the wake of his passing. Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, described Murtala as “a voice of conscience in the chamber,” while Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson referred to him as “a man whose moral compass never wavered, even in the fiercest storms of politics.”

Murtala Mohammed was known for holding government institutions accountable, challenging executive overreach, and advocating for transparency. But according to those who knew him well, what truly defined him was his spiritual groundedness.

He reminded us that politics is temporary, power is fleeting, and only God is eternal,” Alhassan recounted. “He once told me, ‘I can argue all day on the floor, but when I kneel before God, I drop all the titles.’ That stayed with me.”

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has announced plans to honour Murtala Mohammed posthumously for his respectful and constructive relationship with the parliamentary press corps. According to the GJA President, his legacy will be remembered not just for political integrity, but for his humanity and humility.

As preparations for a national memorial continue, Alhassan’s tribute serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have not only on national discourse but on personal character.

He taught us that journalism wasn’t just about headlines and soundbites,” Alhassan concluded. “It was also about truth, humility, and the fear of God.”

In the echoing halls of Parliament now draped in black, and in the hearts of journalists who once lined the press gallery, the voice of Murtala Mohammed still whispers Be mindful of your Maker.”

I was scheduled to be on crashed helicopter – Asiedu Nketia

0

National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has revealed that he was initially scheduled to be aboard the helicopter that crashed in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, killing eight people, including two cabinet ministers.

Asiedu Nketia disclosed that a last-minute change of plans meant that Dr.

Mr Asiedu Nketia urged bereaved families to find solace in their faith, describing the tragedy as a reminder of life’s unpredictability.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia reflected on the circumstances that led to the death of Dr.

Nketia said, leaves a significant void in the NDC, describing his decision to stand in for him as a final act of selfless service to the party and the nation.

I was meant to be on board – Asiedu Nketia breaks silence on helicopter crash

0

National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has revealed that he was originally meant to be aboard the military helicopter that crashed and killed eight people.

However, due to a last-minute change of plans, he delegated his Vice Chairman, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, to replace him.

General Mosquito, as he is popularly known, revealed this while addressing a gathering as the nation continues to mourn the deceased.

“Allah does what he wants. I was supposed to be on the flight, but I asked my vice chairman, Dr. Sarpong, to represent the party, and he agreed,” he recounted.

Reflecting on the tragedy, he urged people to trust in divine will, noting that no one can predict or alter fate.

“In human reasoning, you might think that if I hadn’t sent Sarpong, he would still be alive. But who knows? If it was his time, something else could have happened, even in Accra. We don’t question what Allah has ordained; in all things, we give thanks,” he said.

He added that perhaps the disaster prevented an even worse outcome, offering a perspective that has comforted some of those grieving.

Vice President Opoku Spotted Looking At Mahama As He Wipes His Tears

0

A solemn floral tribute was held on Wednesday, August 6, to honour eight Ghanaians who tragically lost their lives in a military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region. The emotional ceremony took place near the crash site at Adansi Akrofuom and drew national attention, as the country paused to remember those who died in service to the nation.

President John Dramani Mahama, who returned to power following the last general election, led the tribute. Dressed in black, the President laid the first wreath in honour of the victims.

At one point, visibly overcome with emotion, he was seen wiping tears from his eyes with a white cloth. Standing nearby, Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang was seen watching the President closely, her expression solemn as the weight of the moment settled over the gathering.

The deceased, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Member of Parliament Murtala Mohammed, were hailed as dedicated public servants and patriots. Their sudden deaths have sent shockwaves across the country and raised urgent questions about the safety protocols surrounding military aviation operations.

Enyonam Haligah, reporting from the scene, described the atmosphere as heavy with grief. Mourners, many dressed in black and red, stood in silence as prayers were offered and tributes delivered. Some embraced each other in quiet consolation, while others openly wept.

The tribute not only served as a farewell but also as a call for national reflection and unity. As investigations into the cause of the crash continue, public demand for transparency and accountability is growing. For now, however, the nation stands still mourning eight lives lost, honouring their legacy, and holding tightly to the values of service, sacrifice, and solidarity.

Timeless Ankara Styles For Fashion-forward Moms

0

Ankara fashion has grown to become a symbol of elegance and cultural pride, beautifully merging African heritage with modern fashion trends. One of the most striking ways to elevate Ankara designs is through the use of decorative stones and beads. These embellishments add a touch of glamour, depth, and texture, transforming simple outfits into eye-catching, luxurious ensembles.

The foundation of any well-embellished Ankara gown lies in selecting the right fabric. It’s important to choose Ankara prints with color schemes and patterns that complement the beads and stones. This coordination ensures a balanced and visually appealing design where the embellishments enhance, rather than overpower, the outfit.

Before any stitching begins, it’s helpful to sketch out a design layout to determine the ideal placement for the beads and stones. This not only brings clarity to the creative process but also helps maintain symmetry and flow. Popular areas for embellishment include the neckline, shoulders, cuffs, bodice, waistline, and hem. When beads and stones are carefully applied in these strategic areas, they add elegance and flair without disrupting the garment’s structure.

Using premium-quality stones and beads is key to achieving a refined look. Equally important is the technique used to attach them—tight, neat stitching ensures durability, especially for gowns meant to be worn at formal or festive events.

When thoughtfully designed, beaded Ankara gowns strike the perfect balance between traditional African aesthetics and contemporary style. They are ideal for weddings, birthdays, naming ceremonies, and other grand occasions where looking elegant is essential. These designs not only showcase the creativity of African designers but also celebrate the richness of the culture in a modern and sophisticated way.

Embellished Ankara fashion is a testament to how tradition and innovation can beautifully coexist in today’s fashion world.

Soldier’s Last Message Touches Many as WhatsApp Status Before Crash Shows His Faith and Fear

0

The final hours before someone dies often leave behind small signs that people only understand later. For the late Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, one of the eight victims of the tragic Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crash, that sign came in the form of a quiet WhatsApp status update. Posted at exactly 4:29 a.m., just hours before the crash that claimed his life, the message now feels like a powerful moment frozen in time—one that friends, family, and strangers are holding onto with deep emotion.

The message simply read: “God be with us today.” No more words. No photos. No emojis. Just a short sentence that carried all the weight in the world after the news broke. At the time, most people who saw it didn’t think much of it. It sounded like a prayer many had heard before. But now, that one line has become something no one can stop thinking about.

A close friend who had known Sergeant Ernest for years shared how he reacted when he saw the post. “When I saw the status, I replied with a simple ‘Amen’ and went back to sleep. I didn’t think much of it. I just thought he was preparing for another mission. Now, I can’t stop looking at that post. It feels like he knew something was coming.”

Another soldier who had worked closely with him also remembered the moment clearly. “He was always calm, respectful, and strong in faith. When I saw his status that morning, I smiled. It was normal for him to post something spiritual. But now, I wish I had called him.”

Family members are also heartbroken. The last public message from Ernest has left them in tears. One relative, speaking through a shaky voice, said, “He didn’t say goodbye, but that message feels like one. ‘God be with us today’—I believe God was with him. Even in the end.”

His WhatsApp status has now been shared across social media, screenshot by many and used as a reminder of how unpredictable life can be. To those who knew him, it wasn’t just a post. It was a reflection of his strong faith, his peaceful spirit, and the quiet courage he carried into his duties every day.

People across the country, even those who never met him, are reacting to the message. Some say they cried when they saw it. Others say it made them pause and think about how they start their own days. One man posted on social media, “That one sentence says more than a full speech. It breaks my heart.”

Now, as Ghana continues to mourn the loss of the eight lives taken in the crash, Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah’s final words live on. They’re not just words anymore—they’re a lasting prayer, a message of faith, and the last voice of a brave soldier who walked into danger with his trust in God.

Socrate Safo blames generational rift, ignorance for Ghana’s film industry decline

0

Veteran Ghanaian filmmaker, Socrate Safo Veteran Ghanaian filmmaker, Socrate Safo

Veteran Ghanaian filmmaker, Socrate Safo, has said the country’s movie industry is collapsing because of deep-seated ignorance and a long-standing feud between older and younger generations of filmmakers.

In an interview on Hitz FM, the former Director for Creative Arts at the National Commission on Culture compared filmmaking to driving, a craft that demands not only the tools but also an understanding of the rules.

According to Safo, too many newcomers rush into the industry without mastering the basics.

“People want to become filmmakers, but they do not know anything about filmmaking. They just want to get a camera and organise a few friends, and that is all,” he said.

Reflecting on his early years, Safo recalled entering the industry at a time when video technology was emerging, only to be dismissed by senior colleagues who worked exclusively with celluloid.

“The system today inherited the ignorance of yesterday. When I got into the system, I did not get a warm reception from those who were there before. They were using celluloid cameras.

“So, when they saw me using a video camera, they saw me as a joke. I couldn’t even get the opportunity to show my films in the cinemas because the older people were trying to protect their interests,” he recounted.

The lack of acceptance, he said, sparked open conflict.

“We, the new filmmakers, also revolted. Instead of giving them the necessary respect, we were fighting them. And instead of them giving us the necessary guidance, they were restricting us,” he admitted.

Now, he believes history is repeating itself.

“The same thing today; the young ones have also inherited the ignorance that made us… In a way, we rebelled against them, and they are rebelling against us. There’s no synergy,” he said.

Safo asserted that this cycle of mistrust has only accelerated the industry’s decline. “Now we are all being stupid.”

Acting Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority, Abraham Amaliba, has revealed how a last-minute intervention by Minister of Finance, Cassiel Ato Forson, saved the life of Minister of Interior, Mohammed Mubarak-Muntaka, from boarding the Ghana Air Force helicopter that later crashed, killing eight people, including two ministers.

According to Amaliba, Muntaka was initially scheduled to be part of a delegation attending the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) at Black Park, near the Obuasi Len Clay Sports Stadium in the Ashanti Region.

Speaking in an interview on TV3, which has since been shared on social media, Amaliba said Ato Forson pulled Muntaka out of the flight at the last moment due to an engagement with immigration officers related to his role as Minister of Interior, replacing him with the late Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

Amaliba further disclosed that both the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the party’s General Secretary, Fiifi Kwetey, declined invitations to attend the event.

“Sarpong was not supposed to be on that flight. When the invitation came for the party to be represented in the programme, the party chairman said he had prior engagements. He turned to Fiifi Kwetey, but Fiifi also said it was too impromptu. The lot fell on Sarpong because he comes from the area, and that’s how he ended up there.

“The President, who was advertised to be there, told Omane. I’m told it was Muntaka who actually stepped onto the plane but was pulled out by the Minister of Finance because the Minister of Finance was going to meet immigration officials and said, I need you because your agency is there.”

The fisherfolks at Keta in the Volta Region are rejoicing over a bumper catch in recent fishing expeditions in the first week of August 2025 which has brought relief and joy to the fishing community.

The abundant catch has been attributed to the favourable fishing conditions and the efforts of the fisherfolks in adhering to sustainable fishing practices with varieties of fish species caught such as tilapia, and anchovies, among others.

Simon Tettey, a fisherman, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said that the bumper catch was expected to have a positive impact on the local economy as it would lead to increased sales and revenue for the fisherfolks.

“This bumper harvest will in turn improve our livelihoods and that of other fishermen and their families for better, we are expecting more catch in the subsequent days,” he said.

He said that the improved livelihoods of the fisherfolks would also have a positive impact on the overall well-being of the communities and increased income would also enable all fisherfolks to access better healthcare, education, and other essential services with ease.

Tettey said that the fishing communities in Keta such as Tetevikope, Abutiakope, Dzelukope, Kedzikope, Vodza among others were celebrating the bumper harvest with great enthusiasm.

The fishermen thanked the authorities, stakeholders and the gods for the support and blessing over the just ended closed fishing season, which exempted artisanal fishers during the one-month period.

“The bumper harvest is a welcome development for the fishing communities which faced several challenges in recent years. The growth of the industry will contribute to the economic development growth and food security.”

Madam Mawufemor Woadi, a fishmonger, told the GNA that despite the bumper harvest experienced so far, the fisherfolks at Keta shores still faced several challenges, including the threat of illegal fishing practices and the impact of climate change on fish stocks.

She appealed to the stakeholders, heads of fishing institutions, and other authorities to provide support and protection to avoid collapse of the fishing industry.

She urged all fisherfolks in the various communities at Keta to be committed to sustainable fishing practices to ensure the long-term viability of the industry and to work together to protect the marine ecosystem to help the fishing industry to thrive.

Some other residents GNA engaged at the shores at Keta expressed excitement over the bumper harvest and appealed to fisherfolks to sell the catches at affordable prices to have positive impact and benefit for all communities.

The Keta Municipal Assembly and other authorities have also promised to provide support to the fisherfolks, including an improved infrastructure and equipment to further boost the fishing industry and improve the livelihoods of the fishermen.

Ibrahim Sannie Daara backs proposal to extend GFA presidential term limit

Former Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Ibrahim Sannie Daara, has endorsed the proposal to increase the GFA presidential term limit from two to three terms.

The recommendation, put forward by the Statutes Review Committee, will be tabled at the GFA’s 31st Ordinary Congress scheduled for Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

While the proposal has been met with criticism from some member clubs, Sannie Daara — who now holds a senior role with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) — believes the extension is necessary for the sustained growth and stability of football in the country.

“Leading the Football Association is no easy task. Implementing a vision and addressing the systemic challenges takes time,” he told the media.

“We’ve all seen the progress made under Kurt Okraku’s leadership, and I believe there’s nothing wrong with extending the term limit.”

He further argued that allowing more time in office would strengthen Ghana’s influence at continental and global levels.

“If we aim to have a presence within CAF and FIFA, the impact of our FA leadership must be significant and long-term. That won’t happen within just two terms,” he added.

The proposal is expected to be one of the key talking points at next week’s Congress.

Blood of 8 helicopter disaster victims on your head – Ashigbey blasts ‘galamsey’ politicians

0

In the wake of the tragic helicopter crash that took the lives of eight individuals, including key government officials, Dr Ken Ashigbey, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, has chastised politically exposed individuals involved in illegal mining activities.

The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

Among the deceased were Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the Defence Minister, and Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, the Environment Minister—both staunch advocates against illegal mining practices.

They were accompanied by Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC.

Tragically, the military crew members, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, also lost their lives in the crash.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on August 8, Dr Ashigbey, Convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, called for a shift from mourning to meaningful action to tackle illegal mining (galamsey).

The deceased persons were on their way to the launch of the Responsible Co-operative Mining and Skills Development Programme (COMSDEP) in Obuasi to address illegal mining.

“All of those politically exposed people who are involved in galamsey, the blood of these eight is on your head. You’d better have a change of heart, repent, and step out of it. Enough is enough,” he declared, underscoring the moral implications of their involvement in illegal mining operations.

“I am appealing to the emotions of all of us Ghanaians that we should not just weep for this case and let it pass. We should channel that into positive action. This should be a point of reflection,” he emphasised, urging citizens to demand genuine accountability in the fight against galamsey (illegal mining).

Dr Ashigbey criticised the government’s approach to dealing with illegal miners, emphasising that mere deportation is insufficient. “We should not just deport galamseyers but make sure they pay fully for the fines stipulated and serve the full sentences that apply. We need to send a strong signal that Ghana is closing this criminal business,” he asserted.

Preliminary reports indicate that the officials were aboard a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter en route to Obuasi, a well-known hotspot for illegal mining activities, when the aircraft lost radar contact.

Due to the condition of the remains, samples have been sent to South Africa for DNA testing to assist in identification.

The tragedy has reignited discussions around the dangers posed by illegal mining and the urgent need for decisive action from both government officials and the public.

As the country reflects on this devastating loss, Dr Ashigbey’s call for accountability and reform resonates louder than ever, highlighting the critical intersection of governance and environmental stewardship in Ghana.

The Grassroot Association of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has demanded answers and action concerning the helicopter crash which led to the death of eight individuals.

The group demanded a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the cause of the accident.

National Coordinator of the group Mathieu Kwao Bentho said the accident is unfortunate, but there is the need to thoroughly prove the matter to determine the cause of the crash.

He admitted that although he was not a qualified aviation expert, he would, however, posit that from his brief experience with aircraft, he believes the negligence of someone may have caused this accident.

“How did this tragedy occur? What caused this helicopter to crash?” He was questioned in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.

“We need a comprehensive, transparent investigation that will provide closure to grieving families and prevent future tragedies.”

He said something has gone wrong because the tragedy does not sound right, and that is why we are demanding that authorities investigate and find out what happened.

He added that GA-NDC has pledged to keep the memory of these heroes alive, vowing to “continue their unfinished work with renewed vigour” and support the families of the victims.

Mathieu Kwao Bentho noted that the contributions by the departed souls to Ghana’s development, security, and democracy will “never be forgotten”.

“From Dr Boamah’s dedication to national security to Dr Mohammed’s environmental advocacy, the association promised that their work would continue to inspire future generations, he said.

He added the ideals of grassroots democracy championed by Dr Sarpong will remain a cornerstone of their advocacy for inclusive governance.

To the bereaved families he said, “Know that your sacrifices will never be forgotten. Your husbands and fathers died as heroes, and their legacy of service will forever inspire generations of Ghanaians.”
