Mahama Returns To Jubilee House, Tours Facilities Ahead of Inauguration

0

In a symbolic gesture, President-elect John Dramani Mahama returned to the Jubilee House, the seat of the Presidency, on Monday, January 6, 2025.

This visit marked a significant moment for Mahama, who previously occupied the office from 2012 to 2016.

John Mahama was welcomed by outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who conducted him on a tour of the residency and offices.

The visit enabled Mahama to familiarize himself with the facilities and operations of the presidential complex, which will serve as his administrative base during his tenure.

The tour was also attended by Vice President-elect Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei Opare, former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, and Special Aide to Mahama, Joyce Bawa Mogtari.

John Mahama’s return to the Jubilee House comes after a eight-year hiatus, during which Akufo-Addo occupied the office.

The visit is seen as a significant moment in the transition process, as Mahama prepares to take the reins of power on January 7, 2025.

The inauguration ceremony, scheduled to take place at the Black Star Square, will be attended by dignitaries, diplomats, and representatives from various sectors.

John Mahama’s inauguration marks the beginning of a new chapter in Ghana’s history, and the visit to the Jubilee House is a significant step in that process.

Strengthening Bonds for Shared Prosperity

President Tinubu expressed confidence in President Mahama’s leadership, emphasising that his administration would enhance Ghana-Nigeria relations and contribute to regional integration.

“I have no doubt that your administration will bring about positive change and progress,” Tinubu said. “Your accession to power marks a new and invigorating momentum in pursuing sub-regional integration and progress.”

He urged both countries to focus on addressing critical challenges such as poverty, youth unemployment, and instability, envisioning a brighter future for West Africa.

“With laser focus, we can tackle our people’s most pressing problems… May Ghana’s democracy continue to grow stronger. May progress and prosperity be your portion.”

A Celebration of African Democracy

The Nigerian leader hailed the inauguration as a testament to Africa’s democratic maturity, commending Ghana for another peaceful transition of power.

“This is a celebration of African democracy,” Tinubu declared.

“We have nothing to prove to anyone except ourselves. We will lift our nations out of poverty and build strong and resilient economies for our people.”

A Call for Unity and Peace

President Tinubu reminded Africans of the importance of solidarity, dialogue, and mutual respect.

First, the predominance of white, a significant color in Ghanaian culture, symbolises victory, while the vibrant kente fabric represents Ghana’s rich culture, wealth, and heritage.

Nyame Dua (tree of God) – is an Adinkra Symbol that symbolises God’s protection and presence.

Sankofa (to go back for the best) – symbolises how Mahama is expressing his thanks to Ghanaians for believing in him and for bringing him back to power.

Gye Nyame (Except God) right – this symbol expresses the omnipotent supremacy of God. John Mahama praises the God that he serves.

Check out the schedule for Black Stars’ 2026 World Cup qualifiers

0

The Black Stars are set to embark on a fresh slate of fixtures, packed with thrilling matchups and pivotal showdowns in 2025.

The team experienced their worst performance in AFCON history, exiting the competition at the group stage in the 2023 edition (held in 2024) and failing to qualify for the 2025 edition, without securing a single win.

Nonetheless, 2025 brings a new dawn of hope. With qualification for the 2026 World Cup still within reach, Ghana can focus on rectifying the setbacks of 2024. However, with tough games ahead, they will need to put up a strong fight to ensure a better outcome in 2025.

Here is a breakdown of the Black Stars’ upcoming fixtures:

After consultation with relevant stakeholders, FIFA published the International Match Calendar (IMC) for 2025. There will be five international breaks between March and November 2025. Each window will allow a maximum of two games, and during these breaks, Ghana will play six matches.

Chad and Madagascar (March)

Ghana will continue their quest for a place at the 2026 World Cup with a game against Chad on Monday, March 17, 2025, in Round 5 of the qualifiers. This will be the first official meeting between the two sides, and with Chad sitting on 0 points, Ghana will fancy their chances of securing a win.

A week later, the Black Stars will travel to Antananarivo to face Madagascar. Ghana claimed their first three points of the qualifiers when the two teams met in the first round of the qualifiers at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi. Inaki Williams’ dramatic 96th-minute goal got Ghana off to a strong start.

Chad and Mali (September)

Round 7 of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers will resume after a five-month break, with Ghana travelling to Chad to face Les Sao on September 1, 2025. Eight days later, Ghana will host Mali. The Black Stars earned a vital win against the Eagles in June 2024, and the return leg in Ghana promises to be one of the standout fixtures of Round 8.

Central African Republic and Comoros (October)

The final two rounds of matches will see Ghana travel to the Central African Republic on October 6, 2025, for the return leg of their matchday 4 encounter. The first leg ended in a thrilling 4-3 victory for Ghana.

The final game will be against Comoros, a side that has proven to be a thorn in Ghana’s side in recent years. The match is scheduled for October 14, 2025. If both teams win their preceding games, this could be a winner-takes-all showdown, with the victor securing the automatic qualification spot.

There could be opportunities for friendlies as the 2025 International Match Calendar includes windows for friendlies. With Ghana not having any qualifying games in the June window, the team could use this period to play friendly matches and prepare further for the remaining qualifiers.

Majority Blasts Minority In Parliament

0

In a candid farewell address, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin blasted the National Democratic Congress (NDC) minority for their unyielding stance, which he claimed hindered consensus-building and the completion of government business during the 8th Parliament.

Afenyo-Markin’s remarks, made on Monday, January 6, 2025, painted a picture of a highly polarized parliamentary term, marked by tensions between the majority and minority sides.

Afenyo-Markin’s leadership style had been criticized by some, who saw him as combative and unyielding.

However, the Majority Leader explained that his approach was necessitated by the pressures he faced in navigating the complex and often contentious parliamentary landscape.

“Many did not understand why I was combative on a number of occasions,” he said. “There were those who didn’t know how the heat was on me and were saying, ‘You are the Majority Leader; reach out’”.

The Majority Leader’s comments also touched on the challenges of working with the minority, whom he described as “stubborn” and “difficult.”

Afenyo-Markin claimed that the minority’s stance made it impossible to reach agreements, as they were “smelling power” and prioritizing their interests over the needs of the nation.

Afenyo-Markin’s remarks were not without precedent. Throughout the 8th Parliament, tensions between the majority and minority sides had been palpable.

In May 2024, Afenyo-Markin accused the minority of using tax waivers to sabotage government business, highlighting the deep-seated divisions within the parliament.

Ablekuma North Constituency Results Hang… As EC Suspends Collation

0

The Electoral Commission (EC) has suspended the collation of parliamentary election results for the Ablekuma North Constituency due to discrepancies in seven out of 20 polling stations.

The suspension, which was announced by the Returning Officer, Vincent Obeng, has left the fate of the constituency’s results hanging in the balance.

According to Obeng, 13 out of 20 disputed polling stations have been authenticated, but the remaining seven stations remain unauthenticated due to the absence of presiding officers.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) had also raised concerns about the results, claiming that some presiding officers disagreed with the numbers.

However, Obeng denied these claims, stating that all presiding officers who attended the collation process signed off on the results.

The Ablekuma North Constituency has been a hotly contested seat, with both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition NDC vying for control.

The suspension of the collation process has raised tensions in the constituency, with supporters of both parties eagerly awaiting the outcome.

This is not the first time that the EC has suspended the collation process in the Ablekuma North Constituency.

In December 2024, the commission suspended the process due to issues with 20 polling station results.

The suspension was later lifted, but the controversy surrounding the results has continued to simmer.

However, as the country prepares for the inauguration of President-elect John Dramani Mahama, the outcome of the Ablekuma North Constituency results remains uncertain.

The EC has referred the matter to its headquarters for a decision, leaving supporters of both parties waiting with bated breath.

In the year 2012 then as Vice President John Mahama was sworn in as President following the demise of President John Evans Atta-Mills. Subsequently, in the year 2012, John Mahama was again sworn in as President having won the popular general election.

In 2016, John Mahama lost the election in his bid to retain the seat having served one term. Historically, John Dramani Mahama has the popular and the unique honour of being re-elected to the presidency as he is sworn in Tuesday January 7, 2025. President Mahama unveils four pillars to reset Ghana’s economy

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama, after being sworn in on January 7, 2025, outlined four key pillars to rejuvenate Ghana’s economy and society.

These pillars are economic restoration and stabilization, improving the business and investment environment, constitutional review, and the fight against accountability and corruption.

Emphasizing the urgency of these initiatives, President Mahama stressed that the current challenges required decisive and swift action to implement a 24-hour economy.

“The circumstances we find ourselves in are indeed dire, but even so, I’ll be decisive and swift in my actions. We’ll focus our initial efforts on four critical areas.

“The first is the restoration and stabilization of the macroeconomic environment. The second is the improvement of the business and investment environment to ensure that Ghana is once again open for business.

“The third is governance and constitutional reforms, and the final one is accountability and the fight against corruption,” he stated.

In his inaugural speech, President Mahama said that the implementation of initiatives under his four-pillar framework would focus on creating decent, well-paid jobs for Ghanaians, especially the youth.

He highlighted agriculture and agribusiness as key sectors for job creation.

The President, alongside Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, pledged to prioritize inclusivity, accountability, and innovation, ensuring that every citizen had an opportunity to thrive under their leadership.

“Our policies will be tailored to sustain innovation and foster industries that engage today’s young minds and equip them with the skills for tomorrow’s challenges,” he said.

President Mahama assured Ghanaians that his administration would work closely with the business community to create decent and well-paid jobs, emphasizing that diversity would be at the heart of governance decisions.

He urged citizens to have faith in the process, advocating for a national reset to rebuild trust in public institutions.

“We need a reset in our dear nation Ghana because all of us are Ghana.

“What can you do to help build that better Ghana that we all strive for? What behaviors, attitudes, and mindsets can we reset?” Mahama asked, urging Ghanaians to contribute their quota to building a stronger nation.

“I ask that we enter into a covenant with the Ghana we all love and the good people who make up our dear nation, and I ask that you envision a Ghana that you want to live in and leave behind for your children and grandchildren,” he said.

The Akwa Ibom-born cleric announced the invitation on his Instagram page, sharing a poster of the event and writing: “Let’s raise a sound in America. See you on January 20, 2025.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the U.S. Presidential Inaugural Prayer Breakfast is a non-political, faith-based event held every four years before the swearing-in of a new administration. It focuses on prayer and worship as spiritual support for the U.S. government and presidency.

Ato Forson Weeps Over Ambulance Deal

0

Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson has launched a scathing attack on the government, accusing it of orchestrating a “malicious prosecution” against him in connection with an ambulance procurement deal.

Speaking on the Floor of Parliament on Monday, January 6, Ato Forson described the charges against him as “frivolous and trumped-up,” aimed at silencing his dissenting voice and intimidating him into submission.

The ambulance deal in question dates back to 2015, when Ato Forson was a Deputy Minister of Finance.

The government had contracted Big Sea General Trading LLC to supply ambulances, but the vehicles delivered were not fit for purpose.

The Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has argued that Ato Forson’s actions were criminally negligent, leading to financial loss to the state.

However, Ato Forson maintains that the prosecution is politically motivated, designed to damage his reputation and weaken his influence as a prominent opposition figure.

He points to the timing of the prosecution, which coincided with contentious debates over the government’s controversial e-levy policy.

Ato Forson had been a vocal critic of the policy, and he believes this made him a target for political retribution.

Touch One, You Touch All” – Afenyo To NDC Oral Committee

0

The outgoing Majority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has issued a stern warning to members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) , calling on them to respect constitutional processes and not undermine the rights of former appointees of the Akufo-Addo government.

In a final speech on the floor of Parliament, the Majority Leader criticized efforts by incoming NDC government to use illegal or unconstitutional measures to frustrate or persecute individuals who served under the Akufo-Addo administration.

“To use illegalities and unconstitutional means to frustrate and abuse the rights of former appointees of the Akufo-Addo government is unacceptable,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin declared, emphasizing that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) stance is clear: “Touch one, touch all.”

According to him, the party has collectively resolved to protect the rights of former officials and ensure that any attempts to undermine them are met with unified opposition.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin called on the NDC government to focus on fulfilling its promises to Ghanaians, particularly addressing critical issues that affect the daily lives of citizens, such as the abolition of the e-levy and the reduction of taxes at the country’s ports.

“The people of Ghana are expecting the e-levy to be abolished. The people of Ghana are expecting that cocoa prices for farmers will be increased without delay,” he added.

“The people of Ghana are expecting that taxes at our ports will be reduced significantly.”

The outgoing Majority Leader also urged the government to honour its commitment to limiting the number of ministers in the new administration to 60, with one minister representing each of the 16 regions.

“Ghana has come of age, and I expect my friends in the NDC to know that it is not a populist agenda that makes a nation strong,” he said, stressing the importance of due process of law in governance.

Turning his attention to the NDC Members of Parliament’s (MPs) support for what he called an “illegal” body known as the Office Oral Committee (OOC), Mr. Afenyo-Markin criticized the lawmakers for backing what he described as an unconstitutional initiative.

“I regret that members of this hallowed chamber are advocates of this illegal, unconstitutional so-called body called Oral Committee,” he said, urging his colleagues to respect the laws of the country.

He reminded Parliament’s historical context, referencing the 1996 elections when the NDC secured 133 seats, and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) only 61. Despite their smaller number, the NPP had a “minority of conscience,” a sentiment he urged to be revived as the country moves forward.

“We are not going to allow you to use unconstitutional means to shut us up, to frustrate people, to chase people into their homes. We stand firm and collective in ensuring that we stop any injustice,” he stated firmly, reiterating the mantra, “Touch one, touch all.”

Tensions are reportedly high at Abeka in Accra, as some residents took to the streets, burning car tyres and blocking major roads to protest the declaration of Patrick Boamah as the Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, after the final collation of results.

In a post shared on X by CITI FM, some residents alleged that results were manipulated to unfairly strip Baba Sadiq, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, of his victory.

In a video that accompanied the post, tyres were seen in flames in the middle of a road with several people holding placards chanting, “No Baba no MP”.

Some policemen were also captured at the scene.

The post shared on X read, “Some residents of Abeka have taken to the streets, burning car tyres on the Abeka stretch, reportedly protesting the decision to award the parliamentary seat to Patrick Boamah after the final collation, which they claim unfairly stripped Baba Sadiq of his position.”

Background

The Electoral Commission (EC) declared Patrick Yaw Boamah of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Okaikwei Central constituency in the Greater Accra Region on January 5, 2024.

According to the EC, Patrick Yaw Boamah secured 21,099 votes to win the seat, while his opponent, Abdulai Abu Baba Saddiq, garnered 19,368 votes.

This announcement followed a High Court ruling on Saturday, January 4, which granted an application by the NPP seeking to compel the EC to complete the collation of parliamentary results for the constituency.

Justice Forson Agyapong, who presided over the case, ruled in favour of the NPP, issuing an order of mandamus that compelled the EC to complete the collation process.

In his judgment, Justice Agyapong stated that the EC had failed to collate results from 31 outstanding polling stations in the constituency, which was a breach of its obligations.

Trust the process – Mohammed Salisu after French Super Cup defeat to PSG

0

Ghana defender Mohammed Salisu has reacted to AS Monaco’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the final of the French Super Cup.

The Red and White lost 1-0 in the Cup match following a last-gasp strike from French forward Ousmane Dembele in the game played at Stadium 974 in Doha, Qatar.

The Black Stars centre-back played full throttle and defended resolutely as Monaco remained in the game for most of the match.

However, a cross from the left evaded all the Monaco defenders, falling right at the World Cup winner’s foot as he rolled it into the net.

“Trust the process; you’re doing great!! It’s part of the game. Lord knows.” posted Salisu after the match.

The highly-rated defender has been in the Middle East since the break in the French Ligue 1 for the winter holidays.

The former Southampton and Real Valladolid star will return to France with his teammates on Friday’s Ligue 1 game against FC Nantes.

Salisu has made 15 appearances across all competitions, scoring a goal for Monaco this season.

Five missing Kenyan youths freed amid uproar over abductions

Activists vow to maintain pressure against the government until those missing are accounted for Activists vow to maintain pressure against the government until those missing are accounted for

Five young Kenyan men – including a popular cartoonist – who went missing just before the Christmas holidays have been found alive, family members and rights groups say.

Kenya has been gripped by a wave of disappearances, with the state-funded rights group saying that over 80 people have been abducted in the last six months.

The abductions generally target government critics and are widely believed to be the work of security agents, although the authorities have not admitted responsibility.

They began in June last year during nationwide anti-tax protests, but increased in December, when AI-generated photos of the president in a coffin were widely shared.

The youth-led protests forced President William Ruto to withdraw a series of planned tax rises and shook his government, leaving his authority badly undermined.

Kibet Bull, known for his silhouette cartoon memes critical of the president, announced his release on Monday afternoon on X to much fanfare.

He told his 105,000 followers that he had been dropped off in the town of Luanda, nearly 370 km (229 miles) from the capital, Nairobi, where he was last seen in December.

Kibet Bull said straight after he was released he went to a disco.

His mother told the BBC she “rejoiced” after she heard the news that her son had returned.

“I gave him a call and we talked, we didn’t talk much, the moment he told me ‘I am Kibet’ and I heard his voice, I screamed, I celebrated until he hung up,” she said.

The others released on Monday include 24-year-old student Billy Mwangi in Embu, in the central Mount Kenya region.

Local MP Gitonga Mukunji told journalists that Mr Mwangi “was whipped and beaten while in a dark room. He is traumatised.”

Mr Mwangi’s father said his son was not able to discuss what he had gone through adding that he had been taken to hospital.

“He came home around eight in the morning. He walked by himself – his mother and I saw him. We thank everyone who has prayed and supported him,” he told the Daily Nation news site.

Last week, Mr Mwangi’s father broke down in court as he pleaded for his son to be released.

A relative of 22-year-old Peter Muteti, who was seized in Nairobi, on 21 December, told the BBC on Monday that he had been reunited with the family but was disoriented and unable to speak about the ordeal.

Amnesty International Kenya welcomed the releases and urged “the State to free all abductees and hold those responsible accountable”.

Two weeks ago the police denied responsibility for the abductions carried out by men in plain clothes across the country, some of which were captured on CCTV.

Rights groups and other Kenyans have linked the abductions to a shadowy intelligence and counter-terrorism unit of the security forces.

Amid the public uproar, President Ruto said last month: “We are going to stop the abductions so that our youth can live peacefully and have discipline”, while urging parents to take care of their children.

Until now, no-one had been freed since he spoke on 27 December, with activists planning protests on Monday to push the government to act.

On Monday the police released an update acknowledging the freeing of the men, saying they were already in contact with one of the abductees, Bernard Kavuli, who had presented himself at a police station.

The police said investigations into all cases of missing people were under way.

One other man – Ronny Kiplangat – has also been released, his family told local media.

Mr Kavuli, a content creator, was seized on the outskirts of Nairobi in December, while Mr Kiplangat is the brother of Kibet Bull.

Two others were seized after posting AI-generated images of the president.

At least 24 people are still missing.

The Law Society of Kenya has filed a legal case against the state, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of seven individuals abducted last month, including those who have now been released.

The situation continues to stoke fear across the country, with parents worried about the safety of their children and activists vowing to maintain pressure until all missing persons are accounted for.

Akufo-Addo Throws Out Petition Against Chief Justice

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has dismissed a petition calling for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, citing lack of evidence to support the allegations.

The petition, submitted by Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, accused the Chief Justice of misbehavior and incompetence in her administrative role.

The petition was filed on December 17, 2024, under Article 146(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which provides the legal framework for removing a Justice of the Superior Court or a Chairman of a Regional Tribunal for stated misbehavior, incompetence, or inability to perform duties due to infirmity.

Professor Asare alleged that the Chief Justice had implemented an “elaborate scheme” to influence judicial appointments and had interfered in the composition of duly constituted judicial panels without transparency or public interest justification.

However, after a thorough review, the President found several deficiencies in the petition.

Key among them was the lack of supporting evidence or documentation to substantiate the claims.

The allegations, including claims of panel reconstitution, issuance of practice directions, and purported constitutional breaches by the Chief Justice, were found to be unsupported by evidence.

The petitioner failed to demonstrate any factual basis or provide credible documentation to substantiate these claims.

Furthermore, the President observed that the processes and practices cited by the petitioner, such as the Chief Justice’s administrative responsibilities under the Courts Act, were consistent with the law and established practices.

The President also expressed concern that the petition was prematurely circulated in the public domain, in breach of Article 146(8) of the Constitution, which mandates that proceedings of this nature be held in camera to protect the integrity of the Judiciary.

Based on these findings and observations, and in alignment with the recommendations of the Council of State, the petition is deemed frivolous, vexatious, and unmeritorious.

President Akufo-Addo reaffirmed his commitment to the independence and integrity of the judiciary, which remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s democracy.

The Office of the President cautioned against attempts to undermine judicial independence through baseless allegations, emphasizing the importance of adhering to constitutional provisions in addressing grievances.

Controversy Erupts As Statue Of EOCO Director Is Torn Down Following Mahama’s Swearing-In

According to the Ghanaweb report. The monument of Mrs. Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, the Executive Director of Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), was destroyed barely moments after Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, was sworn in. This unexpected incident has sparked a whirlwind of comments on social media, with Ghanaians around the country expressing a mix of elation and outrage.

The statue, which had been erected to honor Mrs. Addo-Danquah for her service at EOCO, was reportedly toppled by anonymous individuals in what many believe was a symbolic act of protest or a reflection of the political upheaval that followed Mahama’s inauguration. The incident has renewed debate about her term at EOCO and her perceived connection with the previous administration, led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Social media responses have been highly different, highlighting the profound differences in public opinion. One person expressed their approval, saying, “Good news,” and another said, “Good effort! The Akufo-Addo statue remains at Takoradi Roundabout. A third comment expressed a desire for responsibility, saying, “Waiting for her arrest.” Criminality at EOCO has finally ended.” These remarks highlight the conflicting perspectives on Mrs. Addo-Danquah’s leadership and the larger backdrop of Ghanaian politics.

Mrs. Addo-Danquah was scrutinized and criticized throughout her time at EOCO, with some claiming that her investigations and enforcement actions were politically motivated. Critics accuse her of disproportionately pursuing opposition figures while protecting former government cronies. Her admirers, on the other hand, believe she carried out her duties professionally and made significant contributions to Ghana’s fight against economic and organized crime.

Many see the removal of her statue as a symbolic rejection of her legacy and an indicator of the tense political atmosphere that has formed after the change in leadership. While some see the act as an important step toward accountability and justice, others see it as an unneeded and damaging gesture that undermines trust in public individuals and institutions.

This episode highlights larger considerations regarding how Ghanaian presidents’ legacies are perceived after they leave power. It also exposes Ghana’s deep political differences, where even emblems of service may become heated battlegrounds. The split in reactions to this tragedy highlights the nation’s concerns as it navigates a new political terrain.

As news of the statue’s removal spreads, many Ghanaians are waiting for formal statements from the EOCO, Mrs. Addo-Danquah, and the new administration led by President Mahama. This episode serves as a harsh reminder of the challenges of maintaining national unity and respect for institutions, especially during times of political change.

The reactions to this occurrence reflect the intricacies of Ghana’s political atmosphere, in which history, legacy, and public perception are intertwined. As the country transitions to new leadership, the destruction of Mrs. Addo-Danquah’s statue could spark broader debates about accountability, governance, and the role of prominent people in defining the country’s destiny.

Mahama’s administration will bring positive change

0

Nigerian President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed strong confidence in the newly inaugurated Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama.

Tinubu commended Mahama’s leadership and voiced optimism about the positive changes and progress his administration will bring to Ghana.

“I’ve no doubt your administration will bring about positive change and progress,” Tinubu said when he spoke at the inauguration ceremony of Mahama in Accra on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

He also pledged Nigeria’s unwavering support for Mahama’s government and encouraged the president to reach out whenever assistance was needed.

Meanwhile, President Mahama in his inaugural speech outlined his vision for the country’s future, emphasising the need for a national reset to address the pressing challenges facing Ghana.

Reflecting on the state of the nation, Mahama acknowledged the widespread economic hardships and the challenges of the past few years but expressed optimism for a brighter future.

He assured the nation that even though the economy had been hard in the past, these conditions were not permanent and that his new administration would bring positive change.

“If democracy is celebrated as a superior means of governance, then its outcomes must be more tangible and benefit them in their individual lives. Any honest introspection and reflection on the pulse of our nation would reveal that many within the population of our nation do not feel that they have benefitted from or partaken in this democratic dividend.

“We are a people hit by a severe economic crisis and hardships and in the last few years, we have moved from crisis to crisis. But there is hope on the horizon.

“Today should mark the beginning of a new opportunity. An opportunity for us to make a difference in our governance and our economic management. We shall reset our dear nation, Ghana,” he stated.

Jinapor warns of power crisis due to fuel shortage

0

John Jinapor, Member of Parliament for Yapei Kusawgu, has raised concerns over an impending power crisis, commonly known as ‘dumsor,’ due to a severe fuel shortage.

Speaking after the inauguration of President John Dramani Mahama in Accra on Tuesday, January 7, 2024, Jinapor revealed that the country’s fuel stock is dangerously low, with only five hours of fuel remaining.

“I have bad news for you, the confirmation we are getting is that we have only five hours of fuel stock. If you look at heavy fuel oil and diesel fuel, we don’t have up to two days, and so in two days’ time, we are likely to run out of fuel,” Jinapor stated.

He further criticized the outgoing administration for its failure to procure necessary fuel supplies, leaving the incoming administration in a vulnerable position.

“This administration has not ordered any fuel as we speak, and it takes on average four weeks for the fuel to arrive and four weeks for the fuel to be treated, and so we are in a very serious situation,” he said in an interview with Joy News.

Jinapor also pointed out that during the transition, the outgoing administration had assured them that fuel parcels had been procured. However, checks indicated there is not enough fuel to last even two days.

“Today, right after President Mahama assumed office and I served on the transition, my checks indicate that we do not have fuel that can cater for even two days, and so clearly we have a major, major problem,” he emphasized.

The MP warned that even if the incoming administration orders fuel immediately, it will take approximately eight weeks for it to arrive and be processed, leading to an extended period of power outages.

“We are in for real trouble,” Jinapor concluded, urging immediate action to address the looming crisis.

John Mahama sworn in as Ghana’s president, promises to ‘reset’ the country | Politics News

With around 20 African leaders in attendance, the 66-year-old is sworn in as Ghana’s president for third time.

John Mahama has been sworn in for a second term as Ghana’s president at a ceremony in the capital Accra, with around 20 African leaders in attendance.

Mahama won 56 percent of the vote in the nation’s presidential election on December 9, defeating ruling party candidate and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who secured 41 percent.

Mahama takes over from outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo, who served two terms in power.

“Today should mark the opportunity to reset our country,” the 66-year-old new president, wearing the West African country’s national dress, told a jubilant crowd decked in the green, red, black and white hues of his National Democratic Congress (NDC) party on Tuesday.

Energy radiated from Accra’s Black Star Square, as a sea of elate faces waved Ghanaian and NDC flags, chanted and broke into spontaneous dance to the beat of drums and the blaring honk of vuvuzelas.

Among those present were Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senegal’s Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Burkina Faso’s leader Ibrahim Traore, Kenyan President William Ruto, President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Gabon’s Brice Oligui Nguema.

Mahama, 66, was sworn in alongside Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the first woman to become vice president in Ghana.

Mahama’s return to the presidency ends eight years in power for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) under President Nana Akufo-Addo, whose last term was marked by Ghana’s worst economic turmoil in years, a bailout by the International Monetary Fund, and a debt default.

Mahama, who led Ghana from 2012 to early 2017, had previously failed twice to win back the presidency. But in December’s election, he managed to tap into expectations of change among Ghanaians.

On Black Star Square, supporters of the elected leader exuded joy, hope and optimism.

“I’ve never been so proud to be Ghanaian,” Akosua Nyarko, 28, a teacher from the southern city of Cape Coast, told the AFP news agency. “The energy here is amazing … This is the dawn of a new era!”

Mohammed Abubakar, a 50-year-old farmer from Tamale in northern Ghana, said he was confident Mahama would prioritise rural development.

“Coming here to Accra for this historic event is a dream come true,” the farmer said, adding that Mahama’s “leadership gives me hope that my children will have a better future”.

A writer and devotee of Afrobeat music, Mahama wrote in his memoir – My First Coup d’Etat, And Other True Stories from the Lost Decades of Africa – that he was changed by his boyhood experiences during a 1966 military coup.

He was born in northern Ghana as a child of privilege, his house being the only one in the village with a diesel generator.

His father, who served as a junior government minister, was briefly detained and interrogated by the 1966 coup leaders but later released unharmed.

Mahama was also a member of parliament and chairman of the West Africa Caucus at the Pan-African Parliament in Pretoria.

With a history of political stability, Ghana’s two main parties, the ruling NPP and the NDC, have alternated in power equally since the return to multi-party democracy in 1992.

The country of 33 million people is Africa’s top gold exporter and the world’s second-largest cocoa producer.

NDC Sacks Stonebwoy From Victory Concert

0

In a shocking turn of events, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has removed popular Ghanaian artist Stonebwoy from the lineup of their upcoming Ghana Victory Concert.

The decision, announced by the concert organizers, comes amidst public outcry and concerns from the party’s grassroots over Stonebwoy’s inclusion.

According to the organizers, the decision was made in response to public sentiments and concerns from the party’s supporters.

“We sincerely apologize to all members of the National Democratic Congress, particularly the grassroots, for what may have appeared to be a lack of discretion on the part of the organizers,” the statement read.

This development comes as a surprise, given that the NDC had heavily utilized Stonebwoy’s song “Jerejere” during their campaign.

However, it appears that the party’s supporters were not pleased with the artist’s inclusion in the concert, prompting the organizers to take action.

The Ghana Victory Concert, scheduled to take place on January 5th at the Legon Stadium Forecourt, is part of the NDC’s celebrations following their victory in the 2024 Ghanaian general election.

The event is expected to feature performances by various artists, although Stonebwoy is no longer among them.

The decision to drop Stonebwoy from the concert has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some users expressing support for the move while others have criticized the party for their handling of the situation.

Krobo ECG Calls For Responsible Bush Burning Practices

0

Ing. Christopher Apawu

Ing. Christopher Apawu, the District Manager for the Krobo Distirct of the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited has made a plea to the public, esepcailly farmers to be extra careful when clearing their farmlands to burn them for the next planting season.

Ing. Apawu made this plea when he had discussions with a cross-section of media persons on 3rd January 2025. He indicated that “in 2023 to 2024, during the Harmatan season, we lost some of our poles due to bush burning. However, we have not had any incident in ti’s 2024 to 2025 season”. He added that some farmers will definitely be preparing to burn their farms for the new planting season, hence his call for all to be responsible with such bush burning.

During the discussion, he added that all of us need to be each other’s keeper. In that, if one happens to chance on another person preparing to burn their farm but they have not created boundaries which will prevent the fire from spreading to other farms, as well as boundaries around electricity poles and transformers, we should get close and offer that education to them to help protect properties and to prevent possible uncontrolled fires.

Responsible bush burning can be achieved by farmers, ensuring that they have cleared out their boundaries of bushes to prevent the fire from spreading. Additionally, one should stay close to the burning bushes with materials to quench fire, so in case it travels to unintended places, it can be put off. Additionally, one should know and have the contact of the Fire Service on standby. People who cook on their farms, smokers who drop little pieces of lighted cigarete stubs, and those who hunt for animals with fires and smokes should all ensure that they have put off their fire completely when they are done to prevent possible fires.

The Manager also touched on persons who decide to enter the ECG distribution network to change phases or do whatever connections on their own. He expressed worry about this situation as he said things could get fatal as such persons could easily get electrocuted. He also added that for such unlawful entry, such persons will be prosecuted when caught.
