A Black Queens starting 11

GHANA’S SENIOR women’s national team, the Black Queens, have dropped one place to 67th in the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings released on yesterday, despite their impressive performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Previously ranked 66th, the Queens now sit 67th globally but have maintained their sixth position on the African continent following a strong showing in Morocco last month.

Led by coach Kim Lars Björkegren, the team returned to continental action for the first time since 2018 and claimed the bronze medal after a 2-0 victory over defending champions South Africa.

Ghana’s only losses in the tournament came against South Africa in the group stage and hosts Morocco in the semifinals.

Their overall performance, including finishing ahead of higher-ranked teams like Zambia and Morocco, had many expecting a rise in the global standings.

Nigeria, who clinched a record-extending 10th WAFCON title, retained their position as Africa’s top-ranked women’s team.

Inexperienced Pilot, bad weather, human error blamed in military helicopter crash

.. Senior Air Force Officers could be culpable

Details emerging from military circles suggest bad weather, inexperience and human error were the causes of the helicopter crash that claimed the life of Defence Minister, Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah and the seven others on Wednesday, raising questions about the independence of the investigation to be conducted by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

Some eyewitnesses have recounted what they saw moments before last Wednesday’s helicopter crash in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region.

Kessben TV in the Ashanti Region spoke to some of the eyewitnesses including a forest guide in the area.

Attached below is a video of the interview with some of the eyewitnesses.

The entertainment industry was duly represented at the wreath-laying ceremony held in honour of the eight gallant national leaders and officials who died in the recent helicopter crash.

Spanning from arts to tourism, these individuals, most of whom had close ties with the deceased, were seen in an utterly solemn state, with some crying profusely.

Led by the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Abeiku Santana, National Coordinator for the Black Star Experience, Rex Omar, and others, these personalities took part in the ceremony and mourned alongside their colleagues in government.

The wreath-laying formed part of a three-day national mourning period declared by the government.

It was a moment of national grief as Ghanaians gathered to pay tribute to the eight lives lost in the tragic military helicopter crash that shook the country on August 6, 2025.

Among the mourners were top government officials, military representatives, families, members of the creative arts sector, and the general public.

Here are some creative arts stakeholders who were spotted at the wreath-laying event:

Abla Dzifa Gomashie

The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, was one of the first entertainment-linked figures spotted at the ceremony.

Dressed in all-black, complete with a headscarf and dark shades, it was evident, even through her sunglasses, that she was struggling to hold back tears.

While her colleague, MP Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, granted an interview to GhanaWeb, Gomashie stood quietly, overwhelmed by the moment. She eventually broke down in tears, which rolled down her cheeks.

Abeiku Santana

Media personality and Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Abeiku Santana, was also present and visibly shaken. He stood silently before the pictures of the deceased, but his composure soon gave way to loud sobs.

He removed his glasses and wept like a child, tears streaming down his face in a moment of overwhelming emotion.

Bernice Ansah

Gospel musician Bernice Ansah’s grief was perhaps the most heart-wrenching. She knelt down in front of the portrait of the late Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, sobbing uncontrollably and calling out his name.

According to Bernice, Dr Boamah once helped her during a critical moment in her life.

A man was later seen trying to lift her from the floor as she struggled to regain her composure.

Rex Omar

Veteran musician and National Coordinator for the Black Star Experience, Rex Omar, also attended the ceremony. Although he remained composed, he took a moment to speak to the media after paying his respects.

He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and called for a full-scale investigation into the crash.

According to him, the nation owes it to the victims, and to itself, to understand exactly what went wrong.

Cecilia Marfo

On August 7, 2025, gospel singer Cecilia Marfo delivered not just tears, but a message of deep reflection.

She urged Ghanaians to look inward and upward for hope, rather than seeking solutions abroad. According to her, Ghana’s development lies not in fleeing to foreign lands, but in unity, prayer, and faith.

“We must seek divine help to rebuild our nation,” she declared.

Watch family of murdered immigration officer’s emotional reaction upon sighting suspect in court

0

Friends and family members of the late Stephen King Amoah broke into a spontaneous emotional tirade upon sighting the key suspect in his murder at the premises of the Kaneshie District Court on Friday, August 8, 2025.

Dressed in a long-sleeved shirt with his hands behind him in handcuffs and his gaze partially lowered, Bright Aweh was led out of a police pickup truck by officers and investigators, who ushered him into the court for his hearing.

However, the bereaved friends and family had their emotions triggered in the brief moment of his sighting and broke into individual expressions of grief amidst screams and imprecations directed at the suspect.

“Bright, you’ve caused us worry,” a woman could be seen wailing with her hands slapping her lap in grief.

Wearing black and red shirts with an image of the deceased immigration officer printed on them and the inscription, “Justice for Stephen King Amoah,” the emotionally charged crowd’s reaction compelled the police to ensure Aweh’s swift ushering into the courtroom.

Missing immigration officer found dead, body burnt at Abuom junction

“As a family, we are not happy with what you are doing. Allow the person to walk to the car so everyone can see the crime he has committed. You are working for us, but we are not enthused about how you are going about it. Allow him to walk; nobody is threatening to harm him. It has now gotten to a point of death — you can shoot me if you want to,” a family member expressed, sharing his frustration with the police.

“He didn’t just kill him. He killed him and butchered him by chopping off his arms and legs. Do you think it is easy? You could have just shot him, but you chose to kill him, butcher him, wrap him up, dump him, and burn him. That is like dying three times — do you think it is easy?” another relative stated.

Background

On July 3, 2025, Stephen King Amoah, a 38-year-old Ghana Immigration Service officer, went missing after leaving his home at Ashongman Estate, Accra, to meet a friend, now identified as Bright Aweh, who allegedly owed him GH¢200,000.

Amoah’s family reported him missing on July 4 after his phone became unreachable.

Immigration Officer’s Death: Key suspect rearrested, charged with murder

On July 9, his charred body, riddled with stab wounds, was found in a gutter near GBC Satellite, opposite Comet Estate, and was identified by relatives despite severe burns.

Aweh, also known as Highest Bright or Robert, was arrested as the prime suspect.

Investigations revealed he sent Amoah WhatsApp images of cash bundles to lure him to the meeting.

Aweh provided conflicting statements, claiming he gave Amoah GH¢500,000 to settle a debt but could not explain the money’s source.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service recently announced a significant breakthrough in its investigation into the murder of Stephen King Amoah.

Addressing a joint press conference on Monday, August 4, 2025, the Director-General of CID, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, said the latest investigation revealed more damning evidence against the suspect, Bright Aweh, who was initially arrested and charged with kidnapping.

“The investigation took a decisive turn on July 16, 2025, when the CID, supported by officers from the Counter-Terrorism Unit and the Kwabenya District Police, visited the suspect’s residence. A forensic review revealed bloodstains in the living room, evidence of attempted cleanup, freshly painted walls, and an empty can of spray paint.

Blood-Stained Fufu Pestle, Attempted Cleanup: CID details breakthrough in murder of immigration officer

“A search of a secondary crime scene near the GBC Satellite Area also uncovered a burnt woollen carpet stained with blood and a partially burnt camouflage fabric. These items were photographed, retrieved, and processed for forensic analysis,” she added.

The CID boss stated that a warrant secured for a search of another room at the suspect’s residence revealed more bloodstains, including a blood-stained fufu pestle discovered within the vicinity.

“On July 24, police obtained a warrant to search a specific room in the suspect’s house. The search revealed additional bloodstains, which were photographed and sampled for forensic analysis. A further search in the bushes approximately 100 meters from the suspect’s house also led to the retrieval of a fufu pestle with bloodstains all over it, wrapped in polythene,” she said.

COP Donkor further disclosed that an impounded vehicle belonging to the suspect also contained bloodstains, all of which tested positive for human blood.

“Police also impounded the suspect’s vehicle, in which bloodstains were found and collected for analysis. I wish to state that the initial blood samples collected have tested positive for human blood. To aid the investigation, the deceased’s mother and son have provided samples for DNA profiling,” she stated.

COP Yaako Donkor disclosed that the suspect, initially charged with kidnapping, has now been charged with murder in light of the new evidence gathered and is expected to reappear in court on August 8, while efforts continue to arrest his accomplices.

“In light of this evidence, the suspect, initially charged with kidnapping, has been re-arrested and formally charged with murder. He is currently in custody following his appearance before the Adabraka District Court and is scheduled to reappear on August 8, 2025.

“A special operation is currently underway to identify and arrest his accomplices, and we are following other vital leads to gather all necessary evidence against the suspect and his accomplices,” she said.

Why Every Ghanaian CEO Must Take Cybersecurity Personally

0

The writer

In a world where digital transformation is fast becoming the foundation of business growth, cybersecurity has emerged as one of the most critical concerns for Ghanaian business leaders. As companies adopt digital tools, expand their online presence, and store vast amounts of sensitive information, they also open the door to a rising tide of cyber threats.

For CEOs leading the charge in Ghana’s vibrant private sector, this is not a technical issue—it is a strategic imperative. Whether you head a bank, logistics firm, tech startup, or manufacturing outfit, you must now reckon with the reality that your position makes you a prime target for cybercriminals.

Cyber Threats Are Closer Than You Think

According to recent insights from the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), Ghanaian organisations are experiencing more frequent and sophisticated cyberattacks. These range from phishing emails mimicking GRA communications to ransomware incidents that paralyse operations and demand huge payments.

Executives and CEOs, in particular, are being targeted through business email compromise, social engineering, and spear-phishing schemes—personalised attacks designed to deceive and manipulate. “Cybercriminals are no longer just attacking systems—they’re attacking people,” said a senior cybersecurity analyst in Accra. “And CEOs are their most valuable targets.”

The CEO’s Role In Cybersecurity

Far from being a matter to leave to the IT department, cybersecurity must now form part of a CEO’s daily awareness and responsibility. At the leadership level, understanding digital threats and implementing risk mitigation strategies can mean the difference between business continuity and collapse.

As a CEO, consider:

  • Being mindful of online activity—including what you post on LinkedIn, Facebook, or Twitter.
  • Asking questions about your company’s cyber posture during executive meetings.
  • Demanding regular reports on data protection, incident response, and employee awareness.
  • Ensuring key staff undergo cybersecurity training, especially in finance and operations.

A single successful phishing attack could lead to data breaches, fraudulent payments, reputational damage, or even legal action under Ghana’s Data Protection Act.

The Cost Of Doing Nothing

A cyberattack on a Ghanaian business—even a minor one—can lead to:

  • Lost revenue due to downtime or disruption.
  • Increased costs from data recovery, legal fees, and investigations.
  • Loss of customer trust—something that’s hard to regain.
  • Damage to investor confidence and reduced chances of winning local or international contracts.

While multinationals may survive such impacts, many Ghanaian SMEs may never recover.

Certification And Standards Matter

Globally recognised frameworks like ISO 27001 are increasingly seen as essential for businesses hoping to expand into regional and global markets. This standard demonstrates that a company has robust systems in place to protect data and manage risks. Meanwhile, initiatives like Cyber Essentials—promoted in parts of the UK—are being echoed in Ghana by CSA and other institutions through capacity-building workshops and awareness campaigns. Certification may soon become a requirement for doing business with government agencies or major clients.

A Call To Action For Ghanaian CEOs

Now more than ever, CEOs must lead from the front. The digital economy in Ghana is growing rapidly, from fintech and mobile money to agriculture tech and e-commerce. But as opportunities grow, so do the risks. Cybersecurity is no longer a back-office function—it is boardroom business. “Leadership in the digital era means being accountable for the digital safety of your company,” says Kwame Nkrumah Mensah, a cybersecurity consultant in Kumasi. “A CEO who ignores cybersecurity today is risking the future of their business.”

In Summary

As Ghana continues to embrace digital innovation, the responsibility for keeping businesses secure falls squarely on the shoulders of its leaders. CEOs must:

  • Stay informed,
  • Foster a culture of security,
  • Invest in tools and training,
  • And treat cybersecurity as a pillar of long-term business success.

In a nation building its digital economy, the future belongs to businesses that are not only ambitious and innovative—but also secure and resilient.

4 reasons why Ghanaians should celebrate Thomas Partey’s move to Villareal

0

Black Stars midfielder, Thomas Partey Black Stars midfielder, Thomas Partey

Thomas Partey has finally completed his move to Spanish La Liga side Villareal ahead of the 2025/2026 football season as a free agent after running out his contract at Arsenal in the Premier League.

He signed a two year deal with the Yellow Submarines and will be expected to lead the team as the ‘Big Boy’ as Villareal return to the UEFA Champions League following their impressive performance last season.

Ahead of Partey’s return to Spain after leaving Atletico five years ago, we look at four reasons why his move to Villareal is good for the player and Ghanaians.

Villareal will stand by him

Partey is currently fighting for his life in court and will need all the support he can get to be able to sail through smoothly.

Villareal’s decision to back Partey publicly with their statement that he is innocent until proven guilty is exactly what he needs to quell the noise around his trial.

Several players like Mason Greenwood and Benjamin Mendy have been in Partey’s situation before but their clubs decided to suspend them from all football related activities the very moment the players were charged by the police.

Top 5 football clubs with the most Ballon d’Or winners: A legacy of excellence

Familiar terrain

The Spanish La Liga is a familiar terrain for the Ghanaian international as he spent close to a decade in Spain after leaving his home country Ghana as a teenager.

Partey won’t need adaptation in the La Liga as he was a household name in the league before he joined Arsenal 4 years ago.

He spent over 8 years at Atletico Madrid and spent two seasons on loan at Real Mallorca and UD Almeria making a total of 200 appearances and scoring 21 goals as a defensive midfielder in the La Liga.

Watch Jeremy Doku’s romantic proposal to his girlfriend Shireen

Competing at the highest level

Partey could have earned millions of euros by moving to the Saudi Pro League but he decided to reduce his wages drastically to join Villareal because of competitive football, particularly the UEFA Champions League.

Partey is currently in his early 30s and will need to stay fit ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and he will be able to do that by playing against the best teams and players in the world.

He will face Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Bilbao in the La Liga and might face any of the top teams outside of Spain in the UEFA Champions League.

This will also be good for Ghanaians because the Black Stars will need all available players in proper shape and form for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Top 5 football clubs with the most Ballon d’Or winners: A legacy of excellence

Leader of the team

Partey’s leadership will be hugely tested at Villareal as he is going to be the face of the club as the biggest name the Yellow Sub Marines will have on their roaster and that will be good to build up his portfolio.

He was an important player at Arsenal but he was not the main man and Villareal will give him the opportunity to be the main man in a football club for the first time in his career.

This will also help establish himself as the best or one of the best in his opposition currently in world football.

Stanbic Bank Calls for Structural Reforms to Sustain Ghana’s Forex Gains

0

Accra, Aug. 8, GNA – The Head of Corporate and Investment Banking at Stanbic Bank, Musah Abdallah, has called for a shift from short-term monetary interventions to deeper structural and fiscal reforms to sustain the country’s recent gains in foreign exchange (forex).

Speaking at the Graphic Business/Stanbic Bank Breakfast Meeting, he emphasized the importance of a more strategic and coordinated approach to economic management.

The breakfast meeting, held under the theme “Sustaining Forex Gains: Business and Economic Impact,” brought together policymakers, economists, industry leaders and financial experts to discuss how Ghana can convert recent foreign exchange stability into long-term economic growth.

Delivering his introductory remarks, Mr. Abdallah said, “Sustaining our forex gains will require more than short-term fixes. It would demand deep structural reforms, ongoing fiscal discipline, complementary and progressive monetary policy, and continuous support for the productive sectors of our economy.”

He further stressed the importance of translating macroeconomic stability into practical benefits for businesses and individuals.

“Today’s theme is so timely and there are some questions we need to answer, like; how do we protect and extend the progress made? How do we channel forex gains into real, tangible development outcomes? How do we ensure that businesses thrive in the new environment?” he asked.

He explained that Stanbic Bank views its role as more than a financial intermediary, positioning itself instead as a partner in national development.

“At Stanbic Bank, these questions are core to our mission. We are committed to being more than just a financial services provider. We aspire to partner in nation-building, helping to navigate the complexities of the macroeconomic environment, whilst equipping businesses and individuals to make informed, future-ready decisions,” he stated.

He further called for broader stakeholder engagement and public involvement in shaping forex-related policies.

“We believe that the forex discussions should not be confined to boardrooms or trading floors. We must stimulate national conversations around how these gains affect the real economy,” he said.

The Graphic Business/Stanbic Bank Breakfast Meeting is a quarterly thought leadership event that brings together relevant stakeholders to dialogue on key national economic issues.

Previous editions have addressed topics ranging from industrialization, agriculture, public-private sector partnership, and private sector growth to access to credit and many others.

How social media is currently changing the ‘face’ of relationships

0

In today’s world, love has gone digital and public. From Instagram DMs to dating apps, people are meeting online, building relationships through video calls, and sometimes falling in love before ever meeting face-to-face.

Others are taking it a step further, joining reality dating shows in the hope of finding “the one,” with their journey streamed to millions.

Social media amplifies it all, turning private romance into global entertainment where every smile, fight, and breakup is up for public debate.

Love in the digital age

The days of meeting one’s partner through mutual friends, school corridors, or Sunday service are fading fast.

Today, romance often begins with a casual “Hi” in the DMs, a flirty reaction to a story, or a playful TikTok duet.

With just a click, social media has blown open the dating pool, linking people across cities, countries, and time zones.

Some of these virtual connections blossom into marriages, others fade away before the first real-life hug.

The pressure to perform

On Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok, love often comes with a spotlight.

Couples serve their feeds like highlight reels, serving up matching outfits, dreamy vacations, and picture-perfect date nights for the world to admire.

Every post is polished, every gesture is staged not just to remember the moment, but to prove to followers that their relationship is thriving.

Breakups on display

In the past, breakups happened quietly. Now, they unfold in public view. Followers notice when couples unfollow each other, delete shared pictures, or post mysterious captions about “betrayal” and “lessons learned.”

In some cases, private heartbreak becomes full-blown social media drama, with gossip blogs and WhatsApp groups spreading the news faster than the couple can heal.

These young artistes may just be on track to becoming Ghana’s next music legends

Love for the likes and the deals

In the age of influencer culture, some couples aren’t just sharing their romance for fun they’re building a brand out of it.

The matching outfits, exotic trips, and daily “couple content” aren’t always about love; sometimes, they’re about landing the next sponsorship deal.

Behind the smiling selfies, some partners are quietly unhappy but keep up the act because a breakup could mean losing followers, brand gigs, and income. In this era, for some, love has become a business strategy.

Validation over connection

For some couples, likes, comments, and shares have become a measure of relationship success. A romantic dinner isn’t complete until it’s posted online, sometimes with multiple takes to get the perfect shot.

Intimacy is replaced with performance, and moments are staged for content rather than enjoyed privately.

The brighter side

It’s not all bad news. Social media helps long-distance couples maintain closeness through video calls, voice notes, and shared content.

It also allows partners to publicly celebrate milestones, achievements, and anniversaries.

For many, these platforms are a way to bond and support each other’s passions.

The risks

While social media has opened new doors for love, it has also brought along serious dangers.

Fake profiles and catfishing can lure people into relationships built on lies, sometimes leading to emotional or even financial loss.

Scammers use romantic interest as a trap, targeting vulnerable users with convincing stories.

Even in genuine relationships, jealousy often takes over something as small as a liked photo or a flirty comment. And when couples share too much online, they expose their private lives to public world making them easy targets for trolling, gossip, and humiliation when things go wrong.

In conclusion, social media can spark connections that cross oceans, keep long-distance couples close, and give partners a platform to celebrate their journey. But it can also turn relationships into performances, feed insecurity, and broadcast heartbreak to the world.

In the end, it’s not the apps that decide the fate of a relationship, it’s how the people in it choose to use them.

Love may start in the DMs, but it still needs trust, respect, and real-life connection to survive beyond the timeline.

‘We don’t want any mistaken identities’

Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu is the Spokesperson to the Chief Imam Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu is the Spokesperson to the Chief Imam

The Spokesperson to the Chief Imam, Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, has provided an explanation for the suspension of burial, in accordance with Islamic tradition and customs, for the two Muslims among the eight individuals who tragically died in the fatal helicopter crash.

Speaking on JoyNews on Friday, August 8, 2025, Shaibu justified the suspension, explaining that the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two individuals, specifically, the explosion caused by the impact of the crash, which charred their bodies, made it nearly impossible to determine their identities.

He said that, to avoid a case of mistaken identity, they decided to allow experts to determine the identities of the deceased victims in order to link them to their rightful families.

“… In this particular case, we will look at the circumstance under which these two Muslims died, the state of the body, and what is required in order to be able to establish the true and authentic identity of the two so, that we don’t do what we call mistaken identity and give one particular body to a different family to which it does not belong. So, it makes sense that while we apply the Islamic rule of flexibility, which in Islam, there’s a principle, that is necessity can make what is prohibited permissible,” he said.

Shaibu further shared; “Under certain circumstance, what is not permissible can become permissible and Islamic ruling in jurisprudence can allow that. On that basis, we can understand and allow the suspension of the burial and then allow the scientists or those experts to do their duty in determining the true identity of those who have passed so, that we can link them up with their families. If we don’t do that, we might replace or mistakenly give the body to a family to which the deceased does not belong to. I think it would not be fair to anyone to suffer such a thing.”

The eight perished victims were en route to Obuasi for an event attendance when the fatal crash happened.

The names of the perished are: Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence; Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister of Environment, Science and Technology; Limuna Muniru, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC; Samuel Aboagye, NADMO Deputy Director-General.

Also confirmed are the deaths of 3 Airforce officers, namely Squadron Leader Peter Anala (the pilot); Flying Officer Twum Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

BoG leverages academia to shape digital currency future

0

Dr Johnson Asiama, Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Johnson Asiama, Bank of Ghana Governor

The Bank of Ghana has reinforced its commitment to institutionalising digital currency and modernising its monetary policy framework, through a raft of initiatives aimed at bridging the gap between academic research and central banking.

At the launch of the Bank of Ghana Chair in Finance and Economics at the University of Ghana on Tuesday, Governor, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama outlined a strategy that places intellectual capital at the centre of the central bank’s evolving policy agenda.

The move marks a shift toward embedding digital finance within Ghana’s regulatory and academic infrastructure, with the e-Cedi, Ghana’s central bank digital currency (CBDC), at the core of this transformation.

The Chair, to be housed jointly in the Departments of Economics and Finance, is designed to drive research in areas such as inflation modelling, monetary transmission, regulation of virtual assets, and digital financial inclusion. BoG officials view it as a mechanism to support both long-term policy formation and the development of future technocrats.

“Our aim is to ensure that innovation serves inclusion,” Dr Asiama said, “and that the Ghana cedi, whether in coin, note, or code, remains a symbol of national confidence.”

While CBDC pilots across Africa have attracted global attention, Ghana is among a few countries advancing toward formal deployment. The e-Cedi project, first tested in 2021, has now moved beyond proof-of-concept, with regulators finalising a framework for virtual asset service providers and experimenting through a fintech sandbox.

The BoG’s approach departs from purely technological experimentation. Officials have signalled that the long-term success of digital currency depends as much on intellectual readiness and regulatory coherence as it does on software and infrastructure.

The university partnership is part of a broader attempt to build policy capacity across the financial system. The Governor announced the launch of the Governor’s Future Leaders Fellowship, a new pipeline programme that will send high-performing Ghanaian graduates to global institutions before integrating them back into national policymaking roles.

“Central banks must evolve into intelligence-driven organisations,” Dr Asiama said, noting that data, forecasting, and risk analysis will be critical for managing future shocks and opportunities.

Recent volatility—including the 2022 inflation spike and the sharp depreciation of the cedi—has heightened pressure on monetary authorities to build greater institutional resilience.

The Chair is expected to be a potential template for how central banks in the region can collaborate with academia to address structural challenges, including weak transmission of monetary policy, over-reliance on government debt markets, and informalisation of financial services.

The Bank expects the initiative will also catalyse debate on controversial issues such as exchange rate flexibility and the role of central banks in regulating cryptocurrencies, areas where policy clarity remains limited.

“The digital revolution is not just technological, it is institutional,” Dr Asiama said. “We need frameworks that match the pace of innovation but also reflect our unique national and regional realities.”

The Governor said the Chair, awarded to Professor Paul Alagidede, will function as a research hub and training ground, with the goal of creating a “new generation of thinkers who will shape the financial architecture of tomorrow.”

Black Stars winger, Joseph Paintsil wasted no time in making his mark as LA Galaxy cruised past Santos Laguna with a dominant 4-0 victory in the Leagues Cup on Thursday night.

With barely a minute on the clock, Paintsil latched onto a precise low cross from Mauricio Cuevas after a sublime overlapping run on the right flank.

The 26-year-old timed his movement perfectly, steering the ball past the goalkeeper to open the floodgates for the hosts.

Cuevas was again the architect in the 39th minute, whipping in another dangerous ball for Brazilian forward Matheus Nascimento to double Galaxy’s lead.

Just moments later, defender Maya Yoshida pounced from close range to make it 3-0 before the half-time whistle.

Dr Adibo’s leadership improved countless lives, inspired generations- MOH

0

By Morkporkpor Anku

Accra, Aug. 7, GNA- The Ministry of Health has eulogised the late Dr. Moses E. K Adibo, a former Deputy Minister of Health, as a man, whose exemplary visionary leadership and technical excellence, improved countless lives and inspired generations.

Dr Koku Awoonor-Williams, Senior Technical Advisor at the Ministry of Health, in tribute said that at a time when Ghana’s health system faced structural and resource challenges, the late Dr Adibo played a pivotal role in reimagining and reforming its architecture.

Dr Awunoor-Williams gave the tribute at a Remembrance Service and Tribute Night in honour of the late Public Health Champion organised by the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons in Accra.

The late Dr Adibo passed into glory on March 24, 2025, at the Hohoe Municipal Hospital.

He was born on September 4, 1928, at Akpafu in the Oti Region and was a staunch Christian and a Presbyter with the Global Evangelical Church.

The 96-year-old was survived by a Son.

He will be buried on August 16, 2025, in his Hometown, Akpafu-Mempeasem.

The Technical Advisor also described him as the chief architect, who laid the foundation for the District Health System and the decentralisation of Health Services, ensuring that the right to health care reached the remotest corners of the country.

He said under Dr Adibo’s stewardship, the National Tuberculosis(TB) Control Programme was revitalised, adopting the WHO-recommended dose strategy, a bold move that significantly advanced the control of TB in Ghana.

Dr Awoonor-Williams said beyond systems and structures, Dr. Adibo championed evidence-based policymaking, human resources development, and the strengthening of community health systems, interventions that became cornerstones of Ghana’s community-based health planning services model.

“His work, not only transformed service delivery, but also inspired a generation of health professionals committed to equity, access, and impact,” he added.

In his capacity as Deputy Minister of Health from 1998 to 2001, the late Dr. Adibo brought policy and practice into purposeful alignment.

Serving under President Jerry John Rawlings, he was instrumental in advancing National Health Policies, notably in the areas of women’s education, water and sanitation, and traditional medicine integration.

Dr. Adibo believed strongly that public health was not just the responsibility of the few but the national imperative, one that demanded collaboration, innovation, and compassion. Dr. Adibu was not merely a health administrator, he was a servant leader, a mentor, a strategist, and an advocate.

His humility, integrity, and unyielding sense of duty were as profound as his technical achievements.

Dr Awoonor-Williams said his unwavering commitment to service, compassion for humanity, and pursuit of excellence continue to echo through the corridors of hospitals, health institutions, and communities.

He said even on retirement, he remained a public health professional, sharing his wisdom through writings, mentorship, and public service engagements.

“As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate an extraordinary life well lived, a life devoted to building a stronger, healthier Ghana,” he added.

He said his contribution would continue to inspire reforms, resilience, and renewal in the health system for generations to come, even in his absence.

The late Dr Adibo was also a former Director of Policy Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, and while alive he said: “If you send me to Hell, l will go but l will make heaven out of Hell.”

There were tributes from the Global Evangelical Church, the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr A. Asamoa-Baah, a former Deputy Director-General of WHO, and the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives.

Kpone-Katamanso MCE mourns victims of helicopter crash

0

By Isaac Newton Tetteh

Kpone, Aug. 08, GNA – Mr Samuel Tetteh Kwashie Morton, the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives at Adansi Akrofuom District in the Asante Region of Ghana.

Speaking with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kpone, Mr Morton described the crash as very devastating and scary, admitting that the unfortunate death of the defense minister, environment minister, and the other six officers on board was a great loss to the country.

Mr Morton further noted that the late Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omanai Boamah, was a true comrade and a statesman who had a strong interest in promoting equity in national development and an exceptional leader who was worth emulating.

The MCE recounted a heartfelt conversation he once had with the late minister, in which Dr Boamah concerted for the inclusion of some youth from the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality into the Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercises.

“Dr Boamah was passionate about giving every Ghanaian an equal opportunity; he told me point-blank that Kpone-Katamanso must not be left out when opportunities in the military arise,” the MCE recalled.

Mr Morton said the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly would continue to work based on the directives from the central government, saying, “Though many would be in low spirits, the day-to-day administrative works would be properly monitored to ensure the labour force is not impeded.”

The MCE further urged government and national security authorities to review and tighten security protocols for state officials, especially those working in high-risk roles.

“We must act decisively to prevent the recurrence of such painful losses. The safety of our national leaders must be a top priority,” he emphasised.

The helicopter crash, which occurred in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region, has left the nation in mourning, drawing messages of condolence from across the country and beyond.

Mishandled evidence could undermine helicopter crash probe

Forensic security expert Dr. Lawrence Kofi Acheampong has warned that improper handling of evidence at the site of the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District could compromise investigations into the tragedy that claimed eight lives, including two government ministers.

His comments follow concerns over how the bodies of the victims were recovered, placed in sacks, and transported to Accra, as well as footage showing villagers assisting security personnel while handling and displaying parts of the wreckage.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Friday, August 8, 2025, Dr. Acheampong stressed that strict adherence to disaster scene methodology is critical to preserving the integrity of any forensic investigation.

“When disasters occur, we need to follow scene methodology to make sure that we look at evidence. The most important aspect in any forensic investigation is the scene, and at that scene, the evidence,” he said.

He explained that untrained persons should not be allowed access to disaster sites because they risk disturbing vital evidence that experts need to gather.

“There are two major forms of evidence in any disaster or crime scene — direct evidence, such as eyewitness accounts, and circumstantial evidence, which includes scientific findings. The latter is extremely important,” Dr. Acheampong noted.

He described the removal and public display of wreckage parts as a breach of proper investigative procedure, warning that such actions could affect the admissibility and reliability of findings.

“Though biological and scientific evidence may be tampered with, we must ensure that experts uphold the methodology. If the chain of custody is not preserved, the evidence cannot be admissible or trusted,” he cautioned.

A video of the Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Raymond Archer, declining to speak to a journalist about his recent ordeal with dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has gone viral online.

It will be recalled that on August 5, EOCO stormed Shatta Wale’s residence and seized his Lamborghini Urus, which was allegedly linked to a fraud-related investigation.

In response, Shatta Wale lashed out at Raymond Archer, accusing him of treating him like a criminal.

Cocoa farmer-group endorses new producer price

Cocoa is a key export commodity for Ghana Cocoa is a key export commodity for Ghana

The Ghana Cocoa, Coffee and Sheanut Farmers Association (COCOSHE), the largest cocoa farmers’ group, has endorsed the new producer price of GH¢3,228.75 per 64kg bag for the 2025/2026 season, describing the adjustment as a step in the right direction.

COCOSHE expressed appreciation to government and the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) for what it called a responsive policy that reflects the contributions of farmers to the national economy.

The new rate, equivalent to GH¢51,660 per tonne, represents 70 percent of the achieved Free-on-Board (FoB) price for the season. This marks a notable increase from the previous season’s 63.9 percent share.

“In the face of a stronger cedi, it would have been easy to cut prices but government chose to support farmers,” said Alhaji Alhassan Bukari, national president of COCOSHE. This decision underscores a commitment to the welfare of farmers and sustainability of the sector, he added.

He acknowledged that during the final quarter of the 2024/2025 season, COCOBOD maintained the producer price at GH¢3,100 per bag despite exchange rate movements that might have pressured a downward revision.

COCOSHE, however, is calling for the reintroduction of input subsidies such as free fertiliser, insecticides and fungicides as well as deployment of spraying machines.

These interventions – expected to begin in the 2025/2026 crop year, the association says – are essential to boosting productivity and farmer income. Farmers also welcomed the Ghana Cocoa Traceability System, which is aimed at improving global market compliance – including with the European Union Deforestation Regulation.

COCOSHE praised plans for a new tertiary scholarship scheme for children of cocoa farmers, expected to launch in the 2026/2027 academic year. The group also wants greater investment in extension services and education around the new traceability system.

In a related development, the Côte d’Ivoire-Ghana Cocoa Initiative (CIGCI) congratulated government on officially opening its 2025/2026 cocoa season and its announcement of a new producer price.

CIGC applauded the bold step as an essential contribution in ongoing efforts to create a more equitable and sustainable global cocoa market.

For the past four years, Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana – representing over 60% of global cocoa production – have worked in close collaboration to align policies on farmgate pricing, market transparency and value distribution.

Van der Sar picks Onana over De Gea in ultimate goalkeeper showdown

Andre Onana is a goalkeeper of Manchester United Andre Onana is a goalkeeper of Manchester United

Dutch legend, Edwin Van der Sar has made it clear where his loyalties lie in the ongoing debate over Manchester United’s recent goalkeeping talents, picking Andre Onana over David de Gea.

Speaking during a light-hearted “pick one” challenge, the former United and Ajax shot-stopper was asked to choose between the two men who have both played at Old Trafford in recent years.

Without hesitation, Van der Sar replied: “Andre Onana.”

The Dutchman worked closely with the Cameroonian during their time together at Ajax, and his decision came despite De Gea’s glittering United career, spanning over 500 appearances, multiple Player of the Year awards, and a reputation for breathtaking reflex saves.

Onana, who arrived from Inter Milan in 2023, has experienced both highs and lows in Manchester but retains Van der Sar’s faith amid ongoing transfer rumours.

The challenge also saw Van der Sar make a series of other eye-catching selections. He chose De Gea over Juventus’ Michele Di Gregorio, AC Milan’s Mike Maignan, and Inter’s Yann Sommer, but still placed Onana above Spurs’ Guglielmo Vicario.

Interestingly, he picked Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez ahead of Onana, and over Arsenal’s David Raya, before favouring Manchester City’s Ederson in that matchup.

Ederson was also Van der Sar’s choice over Jan Oblak, Unai Simón, and Alisson Becker.

How cycling is providing hope to Rwanda’s female riders

0

Olivia Maniragena has been racing through life, dealing with a lot at a young age.

Orphaned at 14 and responsible for raising three siblings, she also became a mother of two before reaching 20.

Now 21, the Rwandan has found stability through cycling and is gearing up for the UCI Road World Championships in her homeland next month, where she is hoping to compete in the inaugural women’s Under-23 race.

For Maniragena, life on two wheels has always meant a level of freedom.

She first learned how to ride a bike at the age of seven, and over the years cycling became more than just a skill. It became her means of survival.

“Cycling helped me take care of my family. Fetching water, collecting firewood, running errands and as a mode of transport,” Maniragena tells BBC Sport Africa when discussing her early life.

“It brings me happiness. When I ride, it takes away my anxiety and my depression.”

But her freedom was short-lived.

Following the death of her mother in 2013 and her father five years later, she struggled to support herself despite taking on various jobs and fell pregnant twice in her teens.

“I believed the father of my children would be my support system, but after three years, just after our second baby, he left,” she recalls.

“I was left to care for my three siblings and my two children alone. Life was hard.”

Maniragena’s journey into elite cycling began when she joined Bikes for Future, an all-female team backed by humanitarian group Plan International and Learn Work Develop (LWD), a non-profit organisation implementing the scheme

The initiative seeks to challenge gender stereotypes and empower young Rwandan women through sport.

“What makes Olivia unique is her determination,” says her coach Niyonsaba Elidad.

“She knows what she wants. Every time we train, she gives it her all.”

Women’s cycling in Rwanda is still in its infancy and often marginalised in a sport long viewed as the domain of men.

“In the past, if a girl was seen riding a bike, people would ridicule her. They would say, ‘You are not a boy, why are you cycling?'” explains Mbabazi Fillette, programs and partnership manager at LWD.

“If they saw a young girl getting a bike and riding it, it would be an abomination.

“We’re proving that girls can not only ride, but also compete at the highest level.”

At the Bugesera Cycling Centre, Maniragena has gained more than racing skills. She has also mastered bike mechanics.

“I can dismantle and reassemble a bike in five minutes,” she says. “It’s something I truly value. It brought back the hope I had lost in my life.”

While other members of the 30-strong team have specialised in things like welding, tailoring and communications, Maniragena’s trade has become her financial lifeline.

“What keeps me going is knowing I can earn an income.

“On a good day in the bike shop, I make about $7. When I race, I can earn even more.”

But financial barriers continue to pose a significant challenge.

A decent racing bike costs between 60,000 and 150,000 Rwandan francs (approximately $42 to $104) – an unattainable amount for many from low-income backgrounds.

Despite these obstacles, the passion for cycling among Rwanda’s youth continues to grow.

In just 15 months Maniragena has transformed from a novice rider to a local champion, winning races in the Rwanda Youth Racing Cup.

Her rapid rise has sparked hopes that she could one day stand on the podium in national colours.

“I see Olivia as a future champion,” her coach Elidad predicts with pride.

“She has the talent to compete at an elite level. She just needs the right opportunities and support.”

If Maniragena and her team-mates at the Road World Championships miss out on the start list for the U23 race, they will instead take part in a social race linked to the event.

“I see growth. I can’t wait to see more women competing,” says Fillette with excitement.

“This is a huge opportunity for my country.”

As Rwanda prepares to act as host, international tensions have eased on its border following a declaration of principles between the Democratic Republic of Congo and the M23 rebel group.

The deal, signed in Qatar last month, aims to stop hostilities in eastern Congo.

The conflict has strained relations between the DRC and Rwanda, with the latter denying accusations, including from the United Nations, that it backs M23.

In hosting the Road World Championships, alongside other major events, some critics have accused Rwanda of ‘sportswashing’ – the process of investing in sport to enhance a nation’s global image.

The UCI has vehemently denied such claims when asked about its decision to choose Rwanda, pointing to the country’s strong cycling tradition, with the gruelling Tour du Rwanda held annually since 1988.

Those running the Bikes for Future project, which was launched to capitalise on Rwanda’s role as the first African nation to host the Road World Championships, agree there are greater benefits.

“There’s now a stronger belief that bicycles can change lives,” says Solomon Tesfamariam, Plan International’s director for Rwanda.

“Our focus is to engage and support more girls, and cycling is becoming increasingly popular among women.”

For Maniragena and her team-mates, it has certainly created fresh ambitions.

“We want to be champions,” she says.

“One day, we want to race among the world’s best.”

The Member of Parliament for the Kwahu Afram Plains constituency, Kpeli Worlase, has shared his experience from flying in the Ghana Armed Forces’ Z-9 helicopter that crashed and killed eight people on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

In an interview with Accra-based broadcast station, Mothers TV on Thursday, August 7, 2025, the MP shared that he was on board the same helicopter about a week and a half before the fatal crash.

He noted that he was concerned throughout his journey in the helicopter, especially after hearing the sound of the engine when it took off from Burma Camp in Accra.

The Kwahu Afram Plains stated that the helicopter also produced excessive vibrations, which raised serious safety concerns.

He said:

“It was about one and a half weeks ago. It was the same helicopter, the Z-9. Let me be very realistic here, I was really concerned when the helicopter took off from Burma Camp. I was concerned because of the sound I was hearing from the engine.”

“Anyone who has flown in a helicopter will know whether the engine is new, serviced or unserviced when they listen to its sound. In my personal view, I was not hearing the right sound. The engine did not sound well.”

“You could feel a lot of vibration from it. We know helicopters produce vibrations, but this one exceeded expectations, for you to know that there was something wrong somewhere.”

Kpeli Worlase noted that he failed to report his concerns about the Ghana Armed Forces’ Z-9 helicopter since he flew with expert engineers and the Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga.

The Kwahu Afram Plains MP also recounted the previous concerns the late Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, raised about the current state of the Ghana Armed Forces’ aircraft, while speaking on the floor of parliament a few months ago.

GRTCC Suspends 20% Transport Fare Hike

A public transport station

The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has suspended the planned 20 percent increase in public transport fares following a meeting with the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The decision to halt the fare adjustment comes amid widespread public outcry and concerns about the lack of adequate stakeholder consultations ahead of the proposed implementation.

On Tuesday, August 5, Road Transport Operators announced that fares for public transport services, including shared taxis, intra-city minibuses (trotros), intercity coaches, and haulage vehicles, would be increased by 20 percent effective Friday, August 8, 2025.

The GRTCC said the adjustment was necessitated by rising operational costs, including the introduction of a GH¢1.00 per litre fuel levy, increased maintenance costs due to poor road conditions, and what they described as a lack of corresponding price reductions in spare parts and services after a 15 percent fare reduction was implemented on May 21, 2025.

However, the move sparked criticism from passengers and civil society groups who argued that the fare hike lacked transparency and failed to consider the economic strain on commuters.

In a press release issued on Thursday, August 7, the GRTCC announced the suspension of the proposed hike, citing the need for broader consultation and consensus-building.

“Transport Operators have agreed to suspend the purported 20% increment in public transport fares as a result of the lack of broader consultations on the decision,” the statement read.

The Council further directed all operators to continue implementing the existing 15% fare reduction, which has been in effect since May 24, 2025, as part of a government-led intervention to ease the cost of living.

KWAM1: Imagine the pilot was an Igbo woman, they would have said Peter Obi sent her - Businessman, Isaac Fayose (video)

Businessman and social commentator Isaac Fayose believes that if the pilot of the plane that singer KWAM1 had an issue with on Tuesday belonged to the Igbo ethnic group, it would have been speculated that he or she was sent by politician Peter Obi.

In a video shared on Instagram, Fayose stated that this KWAM 1 issue reflects the severity of the country’s current situation. He pointed out that younger singers have all ‘acquired’ their own private jets, and if KWAM1 feels he is too important to adhere to the rules of commercial flights, he should invest in purchasing his own private jet.

‘’Just imagine that the pilot is an Igbo man or woman, the thing when go dey happen now for our country be say them for say na Peter Obi send am. Just Imagine! The country is so lawless. People we see now are the arrogant people.
