Murtala Mohammed’s vision lives on at MESTI

Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed died in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025 Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed died in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025

Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, the late Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, is remembered for his empathy, diligence and visionary leadership.

Gloria Holm-Graves, Head of Public Relations at the Ministry, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that although Dr Mohammed led the Ministry for only a few months, he had endeared himself to staff through his goal-oriented work ethic and cordial relations.

“He would come to the office very early in the morning, before seven, and usually he comes to my office first. Then he would climb up, and sometimes he would check on other people. He looked out for everyone.

“He had a lot of vision, was very resilient and had a strong personality. He was a man on the go, sort of and did not have room for, let’s wait till tomorrow. He wanted to have everything done whilst he could,” she said.

Madam Holm-Graves noted that the late Minister had initiated efforts to enhance the Ministry’s impact by integrating academic research with commercialisation strategies to benefit the country and beyond.

She said the Ministry was working towards this goal when news of his death in a helicopter crash was received.

“So he put together the best forum, which we launched the maiden edition earlier in the year, and we expected him to launch the second one in September.

“However, we have lost him, and it is difficult for us to come to terms with his departure. He had a lot of foresight, he had a lot of vision, he was a man of the people, sort of. And with him, there was so much to be done,” she added.

On current operations at MESTI, Madam Holm-Graves said the Chief Director, senior and junior staff remained at post, with activities and programmes ongoing despite the period of mourning.

Prince Anuwar Sadat, Country Director of Future Leaders Model, United Nations Ghana, and Project Manager for Eco Green Oasis Legacy, also paid tribute to the late Minister’s humility and commitment to climate advocacy and youth mentorship.

“I remember my personal encounter with him on my way to Tamale at the airport, where I had sat on a seat in the bus and he came and I stood up to give the seat to him. Later an elderly woman came into the bus and he also stood up and gave the seat to her.

“That was one of the moments that made me know that Honourable Murtala indeed is humble and down to earth,” he said.

Sadat said Dr Mohammed would be remembered for inspiring young people from northern Ghana to pursue national leadership and for supporting climate-related initiatives.

He offered prayers for the late Minister, who was buried at the military cemetery on Sunday.

“In the Quran, Chapter 2, Verse 155, it says Allah is the one who gives and takes…. We pray that we shall meet again in Jannatul Fridaus and also pray that Allah continue to give comfort to the family that he has left behind,” he said.

Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed died in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, along with seven others, including the Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah.

Prof Kwame Akyeampong calls for African ownership of education reform narratives

Professor Kwame Akyeampong, Professor of International Education and Development Professor Kwame Akyeampong, Professor of International Education and Development

Professor Kwame Akyeampong, Professor of International Education and Development at the Open University, UcK, has urged African scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to take greater ownership of the narrative and substance of education reforms on the continent.

He made the call while delivering the first keynote address at International Conference on Education, Development and Innovation (INCEDI) on Monday 11, 2025, at the Centrelink Conference, Methodist University Ghana, Dansoman Campus, Accra.

The Conference is under the theme: “Education Reforms in the Global South: Lessons from the Past, Insights for the Present.”

Prof Akyeampong emphasised the importance of creating platforms that amplify authentic African perspectives on educational challenges and opportunities.

He expressed deep appreciation to the conference organizers for the invitation, describing the event as a critical space for fostering homegrown insights into Africa’s educational transformation.

“It always saddens me when I attend international conferences and see many issues about Africa being presented by researchers who have never had the real experience of an African. Conferences like this allow us to present our own perspectives and contribute meaningfully to the global discourse on education and development,” Prof Akyeampong said.

He lamented that, for too long, the story of education research and innovation in Africa has often been told by outsiders, leading to narratives that paint the continent in deficit.

Drawing on his extensive international experience, including a recent six-month fellowship in Germany, Prof Akyeampong contrasted the philosophical and systemic commitment to education he observed in Europe with the fragmented implementation of reforms in Africa.

He acknowledged that African nations had undertaken numerous reforms since the 1990s. He observed that many have failed to yield the promised transformation due to poor implementation or misalignment with local contexts.

“The road to educational transformation in Africa is littered with good ideas, but too often they are implemented poorly or in the wrong context. If we are to create prosperity and opportunity for today’s citizens, education must equip learners to become agents of change, not just holders of credentials,” he noted.

Prof Akyeampong described what he called a “credential-focused mindset” — a tendency in many African societies to view education primarily as a pathway to acquiring qualifications rather than as a transformative force that drives innovation and problem-solving.

He challenged participants to move beyond discussions focused solely on the shortcomings of African education systems.

He urged them instead to interrogate new ideas, embrace collaborative learning, and explore solutions rooted in Africa’s realities.

“Let us make our deliberations about what works and how to make it better. We must ensure that African voices shape the reforms that will define our future,” Prof Acheampong said.

‘No Unity in NPP’ – Alan Kyerematen’s Aide Predicts NDC Could Benefit In Akwatia By-Election

0

Nana Yaw Sarpong, the Political Aide to 2024 Independent Presidential Candidate Alan Kyerematen, has expressed support for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to boycott the upcoming Tamale Central by-election as reported by ModernGhana.

He commended the move as strategically sound but clarified that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) is not obligated to mirror the decision in the Akwatia by-election scheduled for September 2.

Speaking on Accra-based TV3’s New Day show, Sarpong explained that the NPP’s withdrawal from the Tamale Central race is based on the fact that the constituency’s voting patterns heavily favor the NDC.

“In Tamale Central, the numbers now do not favour the NPP. Anybody advising the NDC from a political strategy point of view would say, ‘Push a little more in Akwatia because there is no unity in the NPP there.’

That division could lead to apathy, which the NDC could ride on,” he said.

Sarpong also emphasized that while some have urged the NDC to adopt a similar stance, he believes their decision should be driven by their own political interests, rather than emotional appeals.

“You want the NDC to replicate that? Under what circumstance—mourning, for what reason, death?” he queried.

He argued that the conditions surrounding the death of the sitting Tamale Central MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, are different from the political dynamics in Akwatia.

He concluded by stating that while the NPP’s withdrawal could be seen as a political maneuver to appeal to public sentiment, the by-election in Akwatia must proceed according to constitutional timelines.

Prof. William Coffie appointed acting MD of Cocoa Processing Company – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Professor William Coffie as the Acting Managing Director of the Cocoa Processing Company Limited (CPC).

This crucial appointment comes at a time when the CPC, a vital component of Ghana’s cocoa value chain, is facing significant financial and operational challenges.

Professor Coffie is a distinguished financial economist, chartered accountant, and chartered marketer, bringing over two decades of extensive expertise in accounting, finance, investment, and economics.

He is currently a Professor of Accounting and Finance, and serves as the Head of the Department of Accounting at the University of Ghana Business School.

He previously served as a senior lecturer at the University of Wolverhampton, a lecturer at Birmingham City University, and a visiting professor at Hong Kong City University.

His academic credentials include a PhD in Financial Economics from Birmingham City University, UK, alongside advanced degrees in finance, accountancy, and marketing, gained from institutions across Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Prof. Coffie shares a deeply personal connection with the Ghana cocoa industry that spans generations. His grandfather was a founding staff member of the Ghana Cocoa Marketing Board (CMB), now Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), in 1948.

His father continued this legacy, serving as a Depot Manager for the Cocoa Marketing Board in Sefwi Awaso from 1967. Other family members have held leading roles within the industry. Prof. Coffie himself cultivated his first cocoa farm in 1994, grounding his academic and policy insights with firsthand agricultural experience.

As the company responsible for transforming cocoa beans into semi-finished and finished products, its revitalisation is urgent to regain profitability, modernise infrastructure, and expand market reach.

Prof. Coffie is uniquely positioned to lead this turnaround. As part of his research works, he has conducted in-depth investigations into the financial and operational challenges of both COCOBOD and CPC.

His proven track record in financial leadership, strategic management, and resource mobilisation—demonstrated through his success in securing grants, initiating transformative projects at the University of Ghana, and consulting for prestigious institutions like the African Development Bank and Ministry of Finance—makes him an ideal leader to steer CPC back to sustainable growth and profitability.

Telecel Ghana CEO champions holistic employee wellness at HR connect conference – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Telecel Ghana’s Chief Executive Officer, Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai (DSc. HC.) has called on HR leaders to prioritize wellness, resilience and data as core drivers of long-term organizational success.

Speaking at the HR Connect Conference 2025 themed “Empowering HR Excellence: Leveraging Data, Resilience and Wellness for a Thriving Workplace”, she delivered a stirring keynote that challenged traditional views of HR as merely a support function.

We spend more than 60,000 hours of our lives at work. If the workplace doesn’t nourish you, it will drain you,” she said, urging leaders to design cultures where people are seen, heard, and supported.

Ing. Obo-Nai revealed Telecel Ghana’s progressive wellness framework, which extends beyond physical health to cover emotional and financial wellbeing. Among its standout initiative is an equal four-month fully paid parental leave for both men and women, an initiative that is rare in corporate Ghana. The organization also offers mental health hotlines, confidential peer support through trained Wellbeing Ambassadors, onsite aerobics, wellness months, health screenings, and quarterly social events ranging from karaoke to salsa nights.

“Remember, wellness is not a perk. It is a performance multiplier,” she stressed, emphasizing that healthy, engaged employees are the foundation of business growth.

The HR Connect Conference 2025, held on August 8 at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra, brought together HR practitioners, thought leaders, and business leaders from across the continent. Organized by HR Network Africa, the event featured keynote speeches, panel discussions, masterclasses, and artistic performances, all designed to equip organizations with the tools to build thriving, future-ready workplaces. It served as a dynamic platform for sharing innovative ideas, practical strategies, and success stories that are redefining the HR profession in Africa.

On resilience, she reflected on the organization’s smooth transition to Telecel Ghana, emphasizing HR’s pivotal role in fostering trust, cultural stability, and adaptability during the major organizational change. “It was more than a rebrand. It was asking thousands of people to trust in a future they couldn’t yet see,” she said.

The key to success, she explained, lay in building trust and maintaining cultural stability. “When culture leads, strategy follows and resilience wins.”

Turning to data-driven HR, Ing. Obo-Nai urged HR leaders to go beyond surveys and metrics to uncover the real stories behind employee sentiment. Telecel Ghana now uses advanced analytics to identify early signs of disengagement, enabling proactive interventions.

“Data tells us where to act. Resilience gives us the strength to act. Wellness gives us the capacity to keep acting,” she concluded.

Her message to HR professionals was clear: align these three pillars and you will not only withstand disruption but rather shape the future of work.

Military officer, 7 others remanded over fuel tanker robbery

0

An Accra Circuit Court has remanded seven individuals, including a military officer, for allegedly robbing a fuel tanker driver of his vehicle and its contents.

Corporal Bernard Bortey, charged alongside Raphel Amartey and one Arhin, both currently at large, was arrested while allegedly attempting to siphon fuel for sale. He denied conspiring with the two.

Mark Abito, Ganiu Abdulai, Atiiga Barnabas, Awini Ibrahim, Muniru Ayibo, and Shaibu Adams, alleged accomplices, also pleaded not guilty to abetment.

Several other suspects remain at large and are being pursued by the Police.

The accused are scheduled to reappear before the Court, presided over by Mr Samuel Bright Acquah, on August 25, 2025.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Issah Achiburi informed the Court that the complainant, Jerry Kwaw, is a fuel tanker driver with Petroland Limited, Tema.

He said Corporal Bortey is a serving soldier at the Teaching and Doctrine College of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Abito is also a fuel tanker driver, Abdulai a driver, Atiiga unemployed, while Awini, Ayibo, and Shaibu are tanker driver’s mates.

According to ASP Achiburi, on August 6, 2025, at about 2200 hours, Bortey and four others, now at large, trailed the complainant’s fuel tanker en route from Tema to Kumasi.

They intercepted the vehicle at Pampaso Number One, held the driver at gunpoint, and forced him to stop.

ASP Achiburi said Bortey pulled the driver from the steering wheel, handcuffed him and his mate, and pushed them into a green pickup truck with registration number GX 2881-22.

The fuel tanker was subsequently driven to the PACIFIC Fuel Station at Bunso Junction by Bortey’s accomplices.

ASP Achiburi said the following day, at about 1230 hours, Police at Ablekuma Borkorborkor snap checkpoint arrested Bortey, dressed in military uniform, after the victims raised an alarm from the pickup truck.

Further investigations led to the arrest of the remaining accused at Bunso Junction, where they were found operating a pumping machine to discharge the stolen diesel into an empty fuel tanker with registration number GN 804-13.

Both tankers were impounded at the Kyebi Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department office.

ASP Achiburi said investigations revealed that Bortey and his accomplices had planned the robbery in advance.

They split into two groups: one monitored the tanker from Tema to Pokuase in a Toyota Corolla, while the other, including Bortey in uniform, trailed the tanker in a pickup truck to Pampaso Number One, where the robbery occurred.

ASP Achiburi told the court that Bortey admitted the offence and stated that he and his accomplices were driving around with the complainant and his mate handcuffed, buying time for the diesel to be sold.

However, luck eluded him, leading to his arrest, he said.

The prosecution said investigations are ongoing.

The Court has ordered the release of the robbed tanker and its fuel, following a request by the prosecution citing safety concerns.

NPP’s Tamale Central by-election pullout signals expected defeat, not respect for the dead – Analyst

0

Political analyst Samuel Boateng believes the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is not genuinely concerned about the tragic death of Dr Murtala Mohammed, one of the victims of the August 6, 2025, helicopter crash and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale Central.

The NPP decided not to contest the by-election for the seat, a move Boateng describes as a “terrible decision at a rather good time politically.”

In an interview with Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Boateng argued that the decision goes against Ghana’s democratic principles.

He maintained that political parties should participate in elections to deepen democracy, stating, “You cannot force anyone to contest. However, to help deepen our democracy, political parties ought to participate in our elections.”

He added, “The parties cannot decide for Ghanaians or pick and choose what they want to do.”

While acknowledging the tragic situation, Boateng suggested the NPP might have withdrawn as a sign of respect for the late MP.

However, he quickly added that the party likely considered the political benefits.

He believes the NPP’s internal assessment concluded they could not win the seat, making the withdrawal a strategic move.

“It is impossible for the NPP to win that seat, and so strategically, they have withdrawn from the by-election,” he said.

When asked about the internal effects of the decision, Boateng said that while there is no “perfect time to make a perfect decision,” the party may have made an “unwise political decision without consulting the grassroots in the constituency.”

He stressed that contesting the by-election, despite the collective grief, would have helped the party gauge its popularity in the constituency.

He also questioned whether the NPP would have withdrawn from the by-election if Tamale Central were their stronghold.

Samuel Boateng further challenged the NPP to withdraw from the Akwatia by-election, arguing that even a win there would have no significant impact on their numbers in parliament.

He concluded by reiterating his belief that the NPP’s withdrawal is a strategic move based on their inability to win the seat, rather than a genuine act of honoring Dr Mohammed’s memory.

Krachi East yam farmers face crisis as prices plunge

0

The farmers are appealing to the government and stakeholders for urgent intervention The farmers are appealing to the government and stakeholders for urgent intervention

Yam farmers in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region are grappling with severe financial strain as prices hit record lows, prompting fears that many may abandon farming altogether.

Osman Tamimu and Sumaila Seidu told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that a hundred tubers of yam now sell for as little as GHC400, compared to over GHC6,000 in previous years.

They said the drastic drop has made it nearly impossible to recover production costs, let alone make a profit, leaving many farmers frustrated and desperate.

The farmers are appealing to the government and stakeholders for urgent intervention, including market infrastructure development, price control measures, and other initiatives to stabilise the yam market and safeguard livelihoods in the municipality.

Why Wish Harm on Sammy Gyamfi? Afia Schwarzenegger and Agya Kwabena Clash Source: TikTok

This comes after Agya Kwabena bemoaned the trend of netizens wishing Sammy Gyamfi doom on TV.

Afia Schwarzengger, in a recent video, shamelessly admitted that she is among the growing resistance against Sammy Gyamfi.

She said she wished that the CEO of the Ghana Gold Board had ended up on the helicopter that crash-landed on August 6, killing five top government executives and three military officers.

Afia Schwarzenegger argued in her video that Sammy Gyamfi once did the same to Ghana’s former president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, during the 2024 election campaign season.

The social media sensation chided Agya Kwabena for ignoring Sammy Gyamfi’s chaotic political past, as he criticised the negative comments about him.

While Afia Schwarzenegger continues with her rants about Sammy Gyamfi, a group of TikTokerers comprising Fante Comedy and one individual have reportedly been picked up by National Security officers for making similar remarks.

Meanwhile, Sammy Gyamfi previously filed a defamation suit against Afia Schwarzenegger, demanding GH₵10,000,000.

According to Sammy Gyamfi, Afia Schwarzenegger accused him of buying cars for girls at the University of Ghana, a claim he describes as false and only intended to destroy his image.

Okatakyie Afrifa scolds Afia Schwarzenegger

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that Okatakyie Afrifa had weighed in on the lawsuit filed by the CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, against Afia Schwarzenegger.

During an episode of the For The Records show, Okatakyie rebuked Sammy Gyamfi for dragging the Ghanaian socialite based abroad to court for defamation.

He contended that Sammy Gyamfi has no moral turpitude to drag anyone to court given his past actions.

African political parties urged to prioritise development over electoral gains

0

By Ernest Nutsugah/Edward Acquah

Accra, Aug. 12, GNA – African political parties must focus on addressing social and economic challenges rather than solely pursuing electoral victories, President Carlos Vila Nova of São Tomé and Príncipe has said.

Speaking at the opening of the African Political Parties Summit in Accra, President Vila Nova called on parties to build resilient economies, promote social justice, and strengthen state institutions.

“It is time to change… the role of political parties must evolve from instruments of gaining power to true platforms for promoting economic growth.

“It is no longer sufficient to organise elections and compete for power; political parties must become engine of national transformation, drivers of sustainable economic development, and warrantors of ethical and inclusive governance,” he stated.

President Vila Nova cited population growth and climate change as key challenges and emphasised the role of political parties in promoting good governance, quality education, and youth entrepreneurship.

“Good governance and development do not happen by chance. They are the outcome of clear vision, sound policies, and the ability to mobilise people around shared goals, and this must begin with political parties themselves,” he said.

President Vila Nova urged political leaders to act as “effective mediators between the state and society” and build “a common continental vision,” adding: “If we get the politics right, everything else will follow.”

The three-day summit, organised by the Africa Governance Centre in partnership with the Government of Ghana, brought together delegates from over 160 political parties and 50 African and Caribbean countries.

Held under the theme “From Politics to Prosperity: Strengthening Inter-Party Collaboration for Africa’s Development and Economic Transformation,” the summit aimed to promote dialogue, consensus-building, and inter-party cooperation.

Vice President Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, in her address, called for governance that positively impacts citizens.

“…Power is transient but the nation endures. Partisan victories mean very little if they are achieved at the expense of national cohesion…

“Our people do not ask us to perform politics for its sake. They deserve politics that translate into full security, decent jobs, functional schools, accessible healthcare, infrastructure and justice… African politics can be more than a struggle for power; it can be a framework for progress,” she stated.

Mr. Fiifi Kwetey, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), urged leaders to exercise power with humility and respect divergent views.

“We cannot, under the guise of democracy, continue to behave in a manner that clearly shows that we do not believe in democracy… Leadership is not about how to prevent others from having power but how to focus on delivering for our people,” he said.

The summit also saw the adoption of the implementation framework of the African Political Parties Initiative (APPI), a flagship platform for sustained inter-party engagement and capacity development

Tamale Central exit not to influence NDC over Akwatia – NPP – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has rejected claims that the party’s withdrawal from the Tamale Central by-election was a political strategy aimed at getting the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to pull out of the upcoming Akwatia by-election.

The NPP recently announced it would not contest the Tamale Central seat following the passing of the area’s NDC Member of Parliament, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

The decision came just weeks before the Electoral Commission (EC) is scheduled to hold a by-election in Akwatia on September 2, following the death of the NPP MP for the constituency, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Tuesday, August 12, Haruna Mohammed justified the party’s decision to step aside in the by-election, stressing that it is a move rooted in national interest and respect for the late Member of Parliament and not an attempt to lure the NDC to withdraw from the Akwatia by-election.

“They have already chosen their candidate. How do they change their mind? We know very well that they have chosen a candidate. Once they have chosen a candidate, there is no way we can bait them.

“I have heard that they came to issue a statement. It is not different. You have already chosen a candidate and so why come back to tell the people that you are contesting? Who does not know that you are contesting?” he stated.

He further assured that the NPP has no intention of stepping aside in Akwatia and will actively contest the seat.

Wontumi TV apologises to Mahama, NDC over helicopter crash allegations – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Wontumi TV, owned by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has issued an unreserved apology to President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the public over comments made by one of its presenters linking the President to the recent tragic military helicopter crash.

A presenter of Wontumi TV alleged that the President had a hand in the tragic crash.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 12, the station’s management said the remarks by presenter Akyemkwaa Nana Kofi Asare on Saturday, August 9, 2025, were “inappropriate, unfounded, and contrary to our values of professionalism, accuracy, and fairness in broadcasting.”

Wontumi TV stressed that the comments did not represent its views, policies, or editorial position, adding that they were made without evidence.

“As a responsible media house, we deeply regret the distress and reputational harm this may have caused to the President, the NDC, and the affected families,” the statement said.

The management assured the public that disciplinary action would be taken against the presenter and that editorial guidelines had been reinforced to ensure all on-air content is based on verified facts and credible information.

This also comes on the back of the National Communications Authority (NCA) suspension of three radio stations under the Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited, owned by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party.

The affected stations — 95.9 FM in Accra, 101.3 FM in Kumasi, and 101.3 FM in Takoradi — were cited for failing to address regulatory breaches, including the unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and operating from unapproved transmitter locations.

The move follows the expiration of a 30-day grace period granted by President John Dramani Mahama to allow defaulting stations to rectify violations.

Sam George breaks down impasse with DStv [Watch]

0

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, has provided details of the standoff with satellite television provider MultiChoice, operator of DStv, accusing the company of disrespect, systemic operational failures, and a history of “fleecing” Ghanaian consumers.

In an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, August 12, the minister detailed a breakdown in negotiations over subscription prices, culminating in a 30-day notice to suspend the company’s broadcasting licence, which is set to take effect on September 6.

At the heart of the dispute is the minister’s non-negotiable demand for a 30% reduction in DStv subscription fees.

“I had made a request for 30%,” Mr. George stated. “There’s a reason behind the 30%. In April this year, MultiChoice increased their prices by 15%… at that time, the cedi had appreciated by about 10% against the dollar… So there was absolutely no justification for that 15%. So I’m reversing that 15% and then demanding a further 15% for the Ghanaian people.”

A pattern of disrespect and bad faith

The minister painted a picture of a company unwilling to engage in good faith, citing several instances of what he termed “disrespect”.

He revealed that after he presented his case, MultiChoice responded not with a counter-offer but with a nine-page letter filled with economic forecasts.

“They wrote me a nine-page letter with six graphs and bar charts explaining to me the instability of Ghana’s economy and how our cedi appreciation cannot be trusted to be sustainable,” he recounted with disbelief.

“I wrote back to them and asked them, ‘Since when did MultiChoice become an economic forecasting institution?’ … and sent them links from the IMF, Fitch, and Standard & Poor’s on the future outlook of Ghana’s economy.”

The standoff escalated when MultiChoice allegedly attempted to bypass the ministry.

“They wrote to my regulator, the NCA [National Communications Authority], asking the NCA to write to them confirming that the NCA would not comply with my directive as minister… You write to my regulator; you don’t copy me,” the minister fumed.

Operational failures and revenue leakage

Beyond pricing, Mr. George highlighted critical operational failures, chief among them being cross-border piracy.

He claimed that a staggering “40 to 45% of DStv devices in Ghana today are all devices from Nigeria,” a situation he says MultiChoice has failed to tackle.

This influx of Nigerian-registered devices, he argued, allows MultiChoice to collect revenue while the Ghanaian state loses out on tax, and it artificially suppresses Ghana’s official subscriber numbers, which the company then uses to justify its high prices.

“When you say you have a low subscription in Ghana, it’s because your prices are not uniform and have led to cross-border piracy on your platform,” he charged.

The minister cited regional precedents where regulators took a hard line, forcing MultiChoice to adjust its practices.

“In Malawi, in 2023… they just shut them down… MultiChoice went to court, lost the case, and four months later came back, offered one week free… and dropped the prices. In Liberia… they slashed the premium package by $30. In Nigeria in 2024… the Nigerian House of Reps passed an instruction prohibiting the increases.”

Industry reacts as Canal+ takeover looms

The public standoff comes at a pivotal moment for MultiChoice, which is in the final stages of a complete takeover by French media giant Canal+.

The deal, approved by South Africa’s Competition Tribunal in July, is expected to be finalised soon.

Responding to the developments, Alex Okyere, Managing Director of MultiChoice Ghana, has previously stated that the minister’s proposed reduction is “not tenable” given the “extremely challenging macroeconomic environment”.

In a statement, the company warned of the “dire implications that an impasse may have on livelihoods” and affirmed its commitment to finding a resolution through dialogue.

In Johannesburg, a spokesperson for MultiChoice Group CEO, Calvo Mawela, reiterated their commitment to the Ghanaian market but stressed that “pricing is a complex issue influenced by content acquisition costs, currency volatility, and local operational expenses.” We must ensure a sustainable model that allows for continued investment in quality content and technology for our customers.”

The impending change in ownership adds a new dimension to the conflict. Mr George revealed that he has already been in contact with the incoming owners.

“Canal+ has reached out,” he confirmed, “and I’ve made it clear to them if they want to come into Ghana and operate… this is our request. Canal Plus’s attitude is light years more positive than that of MultiChoice.”

From Paris, the office of Canal+ CEO Maxime Saada issued a cautious statement.

“We are closely monitoring the situation in Ghana. Canal+ has a long and successful history of working collaboratively with regulatory bodies across Africa. Upon the successful completion of our acquisition of MultiChoice, we look forward to engaging directly with the Ministry and all stakeholders to build a future that serves the interests of Ghanaian audiences and the creative industry.”

With the 30-day countdown ticking towards the September 6 deadline, the future of DStv in Ghana hangs in the balance.

Consumers, caught in the middle, are watching keenly to see if the regulatory pressure will lead to lower prices or if the EPL and other popular content will go dark, at least temporarily, as a new French era for the African pay-TV giant begins.

2 arrested over alleged threats to kill Mahama, behead Lordina

0

The Ghana Police Service has arrested two suspects in connection with a viral TikTok video in which an individual allegedly threatens to kill President John Mahama before the end of 2025 and behead First Lady Lordina Mahama.

The law enforcement body has further launched a full-scale investigation into the threats to the life of the sitting president and his family.

The police announced today, Tuesday, August 12, that the two suspects, identified as Prince Ofori and Yayra Abiwu, were in custody and are assisting with the ongoing investigation.

The viral clip, which has been circulating widely on social media, contains explicit threats in the Twi language by a female.

The Ghana Police Service confirmed that while these two individuals have been detained, efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other persons believed to be connected to the video to assist with their inquiries.

The public is urged to remain calm and allow the police to conduct their investigation without interference.

This incident has prompted serious concerns about the misuse of social media platforms for incitement and making threats against high-profile individuals.

The police have stressed their commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of all citizens, including the president and his family.

The outcome of the investigation is expected to be made public in the coming days.

Ghana’s RTI Commission Pushes Transparency in Upper East Training

The Right to Information Commission (RTIC) is ramping up enforcement of Ghana’s transparency law, training Information Services Department (ISD) staff across the Upper East Region to demystify public access protocols.

At a Bolgatanga workshop, RTIC officials drilled 15 municipal and district PROs on handling information requests, annual reporting duties, and navigating exemptions under the 2019 RTI Act.

Regional Manager Richard Antwi Boasiako underscored legal obligations: “All institutions must report requests granted, denied, and reasons yearly—non-compliance risks penalties.” With some districts lacking designated PROs, the RTIC now partners with ISD officers to fill the gap. “Where no PRO exists, ISD staff step in,” Boasiako confirmed, hailing the department as a critical ally.

Assistant Regional Manager Joshua Effah Osei praised ISD’s adaptability but tempered expectations: “Not all information is accessible. Classified data stays protected—we urge public understanding when requests are declined.”

Attendees learned procedures for filing requests and identifying exempt categories, from national security to private deliberations.

ISD Regional Director Yussif Bennin Duori pledged deeper collaboration, calling for expanded workshops. “Our staff will champion this law,” he vowed. For citizens, the takeaway is clearer: transparency has gatekeepers, but persistence pays.

Article 21(1)(f) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution guarantees the right to information. Yet without trained implementers, laws gather dust. This training aims to change that—one request at a time.

‘Marriage is a beautiful thing, but I won’t rush for it’

Following her recent statement about wanting to tie the knot in December 2025, Kumawood actress Sandra Ababio has made another comment on the topic of marriage.

In a recent interview with Emelia Brobbey on ‘Okukuseku The Talk Show’, shared on social media on August 12, 2025, Sandra Ababio has noted that she is not in a hurry to get married.

She explained that while marriage is a beautiful thing, everything will happen at the right time.

“When the time is right, you will know it is right. I leave my life the way it should be. I go through the direction that I am supposed to be led to. And I know that at the right time, everything will fall into place,” she said.

Sandra Ababio added that she would know when the time is right to get married.

“If God says he is bringing you someone your way, you would know that he is the one. Marriage is a beautiful thing, but if he has not come, I am still waiting,” she stated.

Why COCOBOD has ditched plans to borrow from international banks after 32 years

0

Cocoa is a key export commodity for Ghana and has generated significant revenue streams for the country over the years.

The then Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD, Joseph Boahen Aidoo, explained that the decision to move away from seeking syndicated loans from external sources was part of a broader strategy towards self-reliance and reducing dependency.

Read the full story originally published on August 21, 2024 by www.ghanaweb.com.

Ghana’s cocoa regulator, COCOBOD, is breaking away from a 32-year tradition of seeking funds from international banks for the annual cocoa crop season to adopt a method of self-reliance at the start of the 2024/2025 cocoa crop season in September 2024.

Cocoa, which is a key export commodity for Ghana, has generated significant revenue streams for the country over the years.

Cumulatively, Ghana and Ivory Coast account for about 60 percent of the global supply for cocoa beans.

While some argue that cocoa and gold are Ghana’s top exports, there is contention over the country’s ability to meet global supply and consumer demand like its counterpart Ivory Coast.

COCOBOD announces opening of 2025/26 main crop season

Why is this transition necessary?

Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD, Joseph Boahen Aidoo, has explained that the decision to move away from seeking syndicated loans from external sources is part of a broader strategy towards self-reliance and reducing dependency.

Ghana’s cocoa production output reached 429,323 metric tons at the end of the harvest in June this year, according to data released by COCOBOD.

This production output is less than 55 percent of the average seasonal output. The decline in output has been attributed to disastrous harvests caused by poor weather conditions, swollen pod disease, and illegal mining activities taking place in cocoa-growing areas.

These developments have not only disrupted COCOBOD’s operations but have impacted the supply chain, pushing prices for cocoa beans up on the international market.

Additionally, the COCOBOD CEO on Tuesday, August 21, 2024, told journalists that the regulator has often relied on these external funds to undertake activities in the cocoa crop season over three decades, a move which he says has strained its finances and operations with regards to loan repayment obligations.

“Is it good that COCOBOD should always be heard going to borrow? Are we comfortable with that tag? Today, you have heard that COCOBOD is not going to borrow. It is quite a good time for any human being to learn his or her lessons.

“In 32 years, we have learned our lessons and we think that it is high time we wean ourselves from the offshore international financial markets and then finance the crop ourselves here, and that is exactly what we are going to do. And I think it comes with a lot of projectory benefits,” he explained.

The COCOBOD boss said the regulator is aiming to save more than $150 million as part of this self-reliance strategy during the upcoming 2024-2025 cocoa season.

“We are looking for $1.5 billion this crop season, and looking at the interest rates last year, which were over 8 percent, plus the cost, it means that we can save more than $150 million by the decision not to go offshore,” he explained.

How will COCOBOD fund itself?

While Ghana’s cocoa regulator is yet to provide a more detailed insight into how it will fund its activities moving forward, it plans to tap from domestic sources to fund cocoa purchases from farmers in the new season.

However, the absence of cocoa funding will mean that the Bank of Ghana will have to tap into revenue accrued from the sale of cocoa beans to build foreign reserves instead of relying on the bulk amount it receives every October when the harvesting season begins.

“Whatever cocoa we sell is sold in dollars, and so the revenue from our cocoa will be paid in dollars. Our forward contracts will all be paid for in dollars when we deliver the cocoa so the dollars will come in to shore up the cedi,” the COCOBOD CEO briefly explained.

Also, for the upcoming 2024-2025 cocoa crop season, production output has been cut by 20 percent to 650,000 tons on the back of poor weather concerns, lack of fertilizer, disease, and poor environmental practices in growing areas also known as galamsey.

These disruptions have also placed Ghana in the second spot behind Ivory Coast, who is at the top spot of the summit.

On the international market, demand and supply disruptions continue to impact cocoa prices, with futures rising above $11,000 per ton for the first time, according to Bloomberg Commodities.

What’s in it for farmers?

Ghana’s COCOBOD says farmers will remain the topmost priorities during this transition, emphasizing that they will not be short-changed in pricing measures and decisions.

“It is not true that COCOBOD is not giving the farmers a fair price. If you follow the narrative, you will notice that from 2017 on, COCOBOD has been even more than fair. The government had been more than fair to farmers because this was a time when prices had collapsed, but the government and COCOBOD did not reduce the farmers’ price,” the COCOBOD CEO stated.

Conclusion

Even as Ghana’s cocoa regulator will continue to remain under significant scrutiny as it embarks on a transition toward self-reliance, the success of this strategy is crucial for the country.

Cocoa is a significant contributor to the country’s economy, providing livelihoods for millions of farmers and being a major export commodity for Ghana.

How you can beat a saggy jaw and jowls. Experts reveal what works

Shapewear for your face might sound like a joke reserved for April Fool’s, but in fact it is the latest launch from Kim Kardashian’s incredibly successful SKIMS brand – and the product sold out almost instantly when it launched last week.

The Ultimate Face headwrap (£52) looks like a cross between a balaclava and a pair of nude tights, and promises to sculpt customers’ faces while they sleep.

SKIMS launched its Ultimate Face headwrap for £52 last week and it sold out straight away.

SKIMS posted a picture of the item on Instagram, saying it was the brand’s ‘first-ever face innovation, made with signature sculpting fabric and infused with collagen yarns for ultra-soft jaw support.’

Ms Kardashian said: ‘You can see that it just snatches your chinny chin chin with the jaw and it’s super comfortable to wear at night or just around the house,’ she added.

A ‘snatched’ (aka tight, defined) jawline is certainly the current holy grail of beauty. ‘Jawlines have become the feature of the moment,’ says By Dr Leonard Josipovic, Consultant Plastic and Aesthetic Surgeon. ‘A lot of it comes down to social media. We’re constantly fed images of ultra-sculpted faces, whether it’s from filters, makeup, or non-surgical procedures, and it’s created this expectation that a sharp jaw equals beauty, youth, and even status. There’s definitely been a shift – lips and cheeks used to get all the attention, but now it’s also about lower-face definition.’

A tight and defined jawline has become extremely coveted in beauty circles, partly due to social media
A tight and defined jawline has become extremely coveted in beauty circles, partly due to social media

Will the SKIMS Ultimate Face headwrap help you achieve this? Not according to aesthetic doctor Sophie Shotter. Dr Shotter says ‘The new SKIMS wrap is essentially a wide strip of high-stretch fabric that you fasten under the chin and over the crown of the head.

‘Kim Kardashian’s team says the knit contains “collagen yarns” and offers “jaw support,” suggesting it will create a more defined jawline if worn overnight. In reality, it’s like shapewear for the body – while the material is compressing tissue it can temporarily squeeze out lymphatic fluid and slightly reposition soft fat pads, so you may wake up looking a touch less puffy. The effect, however, is transient – typically gone within a few hours once gravity and daily facial movement return.

‘There is no scientific evidence that fabric pressure alone can remodel fat, tighten skin or build collagen in a lasting way. Even studies on prolonged face-yoga regimens show only modest improvements after 20 weeks of daily 30-minute sessions, and that was through active muscular exercise rather than passive compression. The wrap is a harmless novelty, but it’s not a substitute for medical-grade tightening or sculpting treatments.’

So what should you do if you’re unhappy with the appearance of your jawline? We spoke to cosmetic experts to find out what actually works…

The tweakments that can define your jaw

‘Radiofrequency microneedling is a great option – it stimulates collagen production and tightens the skin over time, which helps reduce sagging or softness in the jaw area,’ says Anastasia Koles, Advanced Aesthetic Nurse and founder of ALTA Medispa. She describes the SKIMS offering as ‘a gimmick’. Microneedling uses a fine needle to create micro-wounds in the skin, which stimulates the growth of healthy new skin. With radiofrequency microneedling (approximately £350 to £750 per session), the needle releases radiofrequency into these channels, which enhances the effects of standard microneedling. Experts say the skin grows back thicker and smoother – making it a good option for a firmer jawline.

Got a double chin? ‘Fat-dissolving injections can target fullness under the chin, helping sharpen the area where the neck meets the jaw’ says Ms Koles. Fat dissolving injections (approximately £200 to £400 per session) work by breaking down cell membranes to liquefy the fat cell, destroying it permanently, releasing lipids that are then eliminated naturally through the lymphatic system. The procedure consists of a set of injections (usually two), administered three to four weeks apart, whereby the targeted area is injected with a fat-dissolving solution.

Dr Shotter says ‘For patients who have lost bony projection or deep fat – common from the late thirties onward – I may use structural hyaluronic-acid filler or collagen stimulators to restore youthful angles, with effects lasting 12 to 24 months.’

Ms Koles also recommends dermal filler to help with a more defined jawline. ‘It can be used strategically to sculpt the jawline and give the illusion of a more contoured, defined structure. Unlike facial shapewear, these treatments actually work with the anatomy of your face to deliver visible, lasting improvement. They’re backed by science, not stretchy mesh.’ Filler costs approximately £300 to £800 depending on the amount used; some clinics charge per millilitre whereas others will offer fixed jawline contouring packages.

Surgery that can offer a more defined jaw

For some people, the only way to achieve the results they want will be to turn to surgery. ‘If you’re dealing with more significant sagging or fullness around the jaw, surgery can offer a dramatic and long-lasting solution,’ says Dr Josipovic. ‘Submental liposuction (sometimes called chin or neck lipo) targets the fat under the chin and along the jawline. It’s ideal for people who have good skin elasticity but are bothered by a double chin or lack of definition in the lower face. The procedure removes excess fat permanently, and the results can be quite dramatic – think sharper angles, a more contoured profile, and a lifted appearance.’ Submental liposuction will cost between £2,000 and £4,500.

If sagging skin is the issue, then you may need to pull out the big guns if you want to see a major difference. ‘For those dealing with skin laxity or softening of the lower face, a lower facelift or neck lift can tighten the skin and deeper tissues to restore structure,’ says Josipovic. ‘This operation will reposition what’s shifted over time and can dramatically improve the contour of the jaw and neck. Shapewear doesn’t come close to what these procedures can achieve.’

The make-up tips to define your jawline

If all the above sounds a bit extreme – because dare we say it, having a defined jawline isn’t necessarily the be all and end all – then you could use good old-fashioned contouring with make-up to give the impression of a sharper jaw. Make-up artist Jamie Genevieve says you can brush bronzer along the jawline and then underneath it to hide the appearance of jowls. ‘Just make sure you blend it down the neck,’ says Genevieve. You’s beauty director Rosie Green recommends using the Victoria Beckham Contour Stylus to achieve this.

Margaret Ansei, CEO of the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA), has called on young Ghanaians to harness their potential as drivers of economic transformation.

In an International Youth Day statement themed “Voice to Impact: Youth Building Sustainable and Inclusive Futures,” she described the youth as indispensable to national development but warned against the corrosive impact of rising drug abuse.

“Your role in advancing MSMEs and shaping our economy is irreplaceable,” Ansei emphasized. She challenged young people to prioritize skills training and resilience, particularly in micro, small, and medium enterprises—key engines for job creation. Yet drug addiction, she cautioned, threatens to “undermine collective progress” and sabotage Ghana’s future.

Her appeal aligns with government efforts to center youth in economic policies, where entrepreneurship and vocational training are now critical pillars. How can you contribute? By staying focused and leveraging opportunities to build “a brighter Ghana,” Ansei urged.

The timing is strategic: International Youth Day (August 12) spotlights both youth potential and global challenges. In Ghana, this means balancing empowerment with confronting substance abuse head-on.

Fresh details have emerged about the tragic helicopter crash in Obuasi on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, which claimed multiple lives and has since left the nation reeling.

Speaking in an interview with Kumasi-based Akoma FM, Chief Executive Officer of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, disclosed that the doomed aircraft made several unsuccessful attempts to land before the fatal crash.

More organisations, individuals pay tribute to fallen heroes

The wife and the family of Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, the pilot of the Z-9 military helicopter that crashed in the Ashanti Region last Wednesday, yesterday laid a wreath in honour of all eight victims.

The widow displayed admirable bravery when she appeared in the company of close family relations to perform the solemn rite at the Presidential Garden at the Jubilee House in Accra.

Within that sobering space, dozens of individuals and institutions also showed up to pay tribute to the memory of the two ministers of state, a Deputy National Security Coordinator, a Deputy Director of NADMO, a Vice-Chairman of the governing party and the three crew members.

They included the Advertising Association of Ghana (AAG), Cargill Ghana Limited, the Ghana Olympic Committee, the Ghana Health Service, the National Peace Council, the Bui Power Authority, and the Director and Staff of Parks and Gardens.

Others were the Judicial Service Staff Association, the RTI Commission, the National Development Planning Commission, the Public Services Commission, a missionary, Michael Davies, and Jesus Rescue Team.

The rest were Pastor Deborah Hong, Sungpok Mission, Korea; Bishop Victor Osei, the Private Enterprises Federation, the Association of Ghana Industries, and the Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors.

Tributes

The AAG expressed sorrow over the loss of the victims in the line of duty, describing the incident as a devastating blow to the nation, its leadership, and people.

The President of AAG, Andrew Ackah, said: “This is not about politics, it is about service to the nation. Whatever the thumbprints and footprints these men have left in the sands of time, we should all pick them up and use them for the greater good of all citizens.”

The management and the staff of AGI also pledged their support for the government’s efforts to combat illegal mining.

The President of the association, Humphrey Kwesi Ayim Darke, said there was a need to provide alternative job opportunities and leverage digital programmes to comprehensively address the issue.

“We are providing alternative job opportunities, which is one of the key ways to prevent young men from going down the pits. Our doors are open to help create sustainable sources of income,” he added.

For her part, the Vice-Chairman of the Public Services Commission (PSC), Dr Stella Agyenim-Boateng, said: “We are here representing the entire public service to pay tribute to our fallen heroes.”

She emphasised the importance of unity and mutual care, urging the public to accept the recommendations and implementation of the committee investigating the incident once it was made public.

Punishment

The Private Enterprise Federation, on the other hand, called for drastic measures to combat illegal mining in the country.

The Chief Executive Officer of the federation, Nana Osei Bonsu, urged Parliament to enact legislation that would impose either the death penalty or life imprisonment on offenders, along with the forfeiture of all assets acquired through such activities.

He announced plans to petition the Speaker of Parliament to enact the law within eight days to symbolically align with the timeline of the eight lives that were lost in the crash.

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has assured the public of a stable power supply despite an anticipated shortfall in gas due to scheduled maintenance.

This follows an earlier announcement from the ministry on Monday, August 11, 2025, approving a planned shutdown of the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant for maintenance from August 16 to August 30, 2025.

Speaking on the AM Show on Joy News on August 12, 2025, as monitored by GhanaWeb Business, the ministry’s spokesperson, Richmond Rockson, said Ghana is expected to lose about 95 million standard cubic feet of gas per day during the shutdown.

He emphasised that alternative measures have been put in place to sustain power generation throughout the period.

“Plans have been put in place to ensure that alternative wells are made available. We are going to lose 95 million standard cubic feet of gas a day because of the shutdown, but we’ve made Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) available, we’ve made Light Crude Oil (LCO) available, and we’ve made diesel available for other thermal plants to produce power to make up for the deficit,” Rockson stated.

He also highlighted recent efforts by E&I to boost gas supply capacity from 240 million to 270 million standard cubic feet per day.

“About three or four weeks ago, E&I undertook an upgrade that increased gas supply from 240 million standard cubic feet to 270 million standard cubic feet. This time, we are losing 95 million standard cubic feet, about 40% of what we lost that day. But even then, we didn’t have any electricity outages,” he noted.

Etherean Mission marks 50 years with cultural celebration – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Etherean Mission International (EM) has marked its 50th anniversary with a vibrant Cultural Day celebration, showcasing Ghana’s rich traditions through dance, music, food, and regalia.

Founded in 1975 by Brother Ishmael Tetteh and now led by Rev. Mrs. Josephine Kafui Tetteh, EM has built its work on the principle of “Respect for Self and Culture.”

The event held on Sunday, August 10 at the mission’s Sakaman headquarters, brought the month-long August festivities to a colourful peak ahead of the official anniversary climax on August 17.

Performers from the School of Performing Arts presented traditional dances including the Ga Waka, Ga Adangme Kple, La Kpa, and the popular Kpalogo, alongside cultural displays by EM members dressed in attire representing Ghana’s major ethnic groups. Guests also shared a feast of local delicacies symbolising unity and shared heritage.

Dignitaries in attendance included Nii Obrempong Dr. Wotse Kojo II, Paramount Chief of James Town, King Nuumo Akwaa Mensah III, Nae Wulomo High Priest of the Ga State, and Rev. Michael Beckwith of the Agape International Spiritual Center in Beverly Hills, USA.

Quoting EM’s founder, “the flower that ignores its roots dies,” organisers said the celebration affirmed the mission’s commitment to preserving culture while empowering communities spiritually.

The final event of the year-long anniversary, dubbed “Remembrance Day,” will be held on August 17 at the Etherean Mission International Centre in Accra.

RLEQ Foundation donates GH₵500k to fight Opioid abuse among youth

0

The Chief Executive Officer of RLEQ Group and founder of the RLEQ Foundation, Richard Nii Armah Quaye, has donated GH₵500,000 to the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment to support the fight against opioid abuse among Ghanaian youth.

Speaking at the ministry during the presentation, Mr. Quaye commended the ministry for its efforts in improving the lives of young people under the current minister’s leadership.

He noted that a few weeks ago, the minister had called on him to support efforts to combat rape and opioid abuse.

Mr. Quaye stated that as a young entrepreneur employing over 4,000 Ghanaian youth, with an average age of 26 years, he had a vested interest in youth development.

He said his experiences across Africa, particularly in Sierra Leone, had shown how opioid abuse could impair young people both mentally and physically, making them unfit for productive work.

He warned that Ghana risked taking the same path if the issue was not addressed urgently, describing the situation as a national threat.

He stressed that the country’s economic fortunes depended on its youth and called for significant attention to be given to the problem.

Explaining the role of his foundation, Mr. Quaye said the RLEQ Foundation was established to provide social justice to deprived, forgotten, and marginalised communities.

He added that apart from creating jobs, the foundation had set up food banks in the Greater Accra Region, with plans to expand to all regions.

According to him, the initiative aimed to support people who were unemployed and could not afford basic necessities, thereby reducing the likelihood of them turning to drugs for comfort.

Mr. Quaye indicated that the foundation was committed to working closely with the ministry to address opioid abuse among those already affected.

He said the GH₵500,000 donation demonstrated the foundation’s commitment and unwavering support in the fight against opioid abuse and rape.

Ghana Forges Research-Policy Pact to Drive Development Decisions

0

Professor Peter Quartey X
Professor Peter Quartey

In a landmark shift, Ghana’s Local Government Ministry will formalize a partnership with top research bodies to embed evidence directly into policymaking.

The move follows Minister Ahmed Ibrahim’s revelation at the Evidence to Action 2025 conference that he was “amazed” by unused data held by the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) and the International Centre for Evaluation and Development (ICED).

“He took specific evidence, left an advisor, and initiated an MoU,” announced ISSER Director Prof. Peter Quartey in Accra. The collaboration aims to end the disconnect between academia and government, ensuring public funds are tracked against clear outcomes. “Who monitors money sent to assemblies? We’ll set baselines for accountability,” Quartey stressed, noting ministries rarely leverage local research.

The pact responds to urgent calls for participatory governance. ICED CEO Dr. David Ameyaw emphasized engaging marginalized groups—60-70% of Africa’s population: “Their views must shape policies.”

Yet Quartey warned research must shed academic formats: “No lengthy textbooks. Evidence must be digestible for officials and communities.”

Crucially, policymakers will now be engaged at research inception. “This ensures studies address real needs,” Quartey explained. The July conference united 400 delegates from 29 African nations, with ICED Board Chair Dr. Namanga Ngongi urging institutionalized evidence translation.

Will this model spread beyond local government? Quartey bets yes: “We set the pace; others will follow.” For Ghana, tired of research gathering dust, the proof will be in policy.
