‘Abducted’ Ugandan student jailed over anti-Museveni TikTok video

0

Several Ugandans have recently been jailed for offensive remarks made against Yoweri Museveni Several Ugandans have recently been jailed for offensive remarks made against Yoweri Museveni

A Ugandan university student who mysteriously went missing two months ago after posting a TikTok video that harshly criticised President Yoweri Museveni’s leadership has been jailed.

Elson Tumwine disappeared on 8 June – sparking accusations from opposition figures and activists that he had been abducted and illegally detained by military agents.

Following an outcry over his disappearance, he was then reportedly left at a police station in Entebbe in mid-July and was subsequently charged with offensive communication and computer misuse.

He pleaded guilty and asked for forgiveness. The magistrates’ court in Entebbe sentenced him to two months in jail on Monday, noting his pleas for leniency.

Tumwine’s sentencing and alleged abduction have raised concerns among human rights activists around freedom of speech ahead of elections next year.

In court, the third-year Makerere University undergraduate admitted to posting the video that prosecutors said was intended “to ridicule, demean and incite hostility”.

He is alleged to have doctored a clip of the parliamentary speaker’s response to a general apology Museveni issued in May to the Baganda people, Uganda’s largest ethnic group and who form the traditional Buganda kingdom.

Over Museveni’s nearly four decades in power, relations with the kingdom and its monarch have at times been strained. The kingdom has no political power but remains influential.

Tumwine’s TikTok post accused the 80-year-old president of not apologising for other things during his time in power.

When Tumwine’s disappeared in June, Makerere University issued an urgent appeal for information that could help find him.

He had been working as an agricultural intern in Hoima, western Uganda, as part of his studies at the time he went missing.

Two weeks ago, the secretary-general of opposition NUP party David Lewis Rubongoya said they had information that Tumwine and another suspect were being held at a police station in Entebbe – having being “dumped” there on 13 July.

He alleged they were taken there after being subjected to “incredible torture” at the hands of the country’s military intelligence unit.

The authorities have not commented on these allegations.

Criticising the trial, lawyer and activist Godwin Toko said Tumwine had refused to let lawyers from his organisation or those from the opposition represent him in court.

“For a man who was abducted, held incommunicado for months, nudged to plead guilty and then sentenced, this is the apogee of injustice that it is not his captor punished, but him getting a criminal record to his name at such a young age,” he posted on X on Tuesday.

Last November, 21-year-old Emmanuel Nabugodi was jailed for 32 months after creating a video said to insult Museveni.

Months earlier, Edward Awebwa, 24, was sentenced to six years in prison for hate speech and spreading “malicious” information against the first family.

COPEC to sue GRTCC if fares are increased by 20%

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) says it stands ready to sue the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) if the council goes ahead to implement its planned hike in public transport fares in the coming days.

The threat of legal action by COPEC follows a hint by GRTCC that it will increase public transport fares by 20% effective Friday, August 8, 2025.

The Executive Secretary of COPEC, Duncan Amoah, who issued the threat to GRTCC while speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, insisted that GRTCC has not established any fairgrounds to support their intended actions on Friday.

He, therefore, stated, “We will be watching the scene by Friday, and if this pushes through, we will intervene in court because there is no justification for their directive.”

His strong resistance is fuelled by his sentiments that “The GRTCC is not reading the mood of the country. People are hoping for a decline in the general cost of goods and services. If this move is allowed to stand, every other economic body or union will also begin issuing directives to their membership.”

Meanwhile, the GRTCC claims its move has been necessitated by three pressing issues, including the continuously high prices of goods and services despite its initial 15% reduction in May this year.

It also mentioned the high costs members incur to carry out regular maintenance on their vehicles due to the poor road network across the country and the recent introduction of a GH¢1.00 levy per litre of fuel.

The introduction of the levy, according to GRTCC, also led to an 8% fuel price increase, which has affected their members adversely, hence the need to increase public transport fares by 20%.

However, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), a major operator, has dissociated itself from the decision by GRTCC

King Charles was a fan of Daddy Lumba – British envoy reveals during condolence visit

0

Britain’s Deputy High Commissioner to Ghana, Keith McMahon, has revealed that King Charles was an admirer of Ghanaian music legend Daddy Lumba, describing him as one of the British monarch’s favourite artists.

Speaking during a condolence visit to the family of the late highlife star, Mr. McMahon shared a touching personal detail that underscored the global reach of Daddy Lumba’s music.

“As many of you may know, King Charles—my King—was such a fan of Daddy Lumba,” he said. “He told me he has a playlist on his iPhone, and one of his favourites is Daddy Lumba.”

Mr. McMahon said this admiration from King Charles reflected the extraordinary influence of Daddy Lumba beyond Ghana’s borders.

“I think that shows the breadth and the reach that Daddy Lumba had across the world. He was very influential to so many people.”

The diplomat, who visited the family on behalf of Britain and what he called “the world,” described Lumba as “a cultural pop icon” whose legacy continues to resonate globally.

“It was important to come here today and say that to his family, and remind them that although he could not live longer with us, his influence lives for a long time. God bless Daddy Lumba,” he said.

Mr. McMahon’s visit adds to the long list of dignitaries and public figures who have paid tribute since the highlife icon’s passing.

Among them are former President Nana Akufo-Addo and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The revelation about King Charles’ admiration for Daddy Lumba adds a deeply personal and international dimension to the outpouring of grief and celebration of his life.

The highlife legend’s unique sound, lyrical mastery, and cultural resonance continue to inspire music lovers across generations and continents.

Bono East NPP Chairman suspects targeted attack in brother’s death despite police denial

Bono East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ibrahim Baba Bukari Bono East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ibrahim Baba Bukari

The Bono East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ibrahim Baba Bukari, has raised concerns over what he describes as suspicious circumstances surrounding the shooting to death of his brother, Seidu Bukari, during a nighttime police operation in Techiman.

Ibrahim Baba Bukari has strongly refuted the police’s version of events, accusing them of fabricating the robbery narrative as a cover-up for what he describes as a reckless, unprofessional, and inhumane operation that resulted in the tragic and untimely death of his brother.

According to him, the police’s claim that his brother was involved in a robbery is entirely false and was deliberately concocted to justify their excessive use of force during the incident, which took place at his private residence in Techiman.

“This so-called robbery story is nothing but a desperate attempt to shield themselves from accountability. My brother was leaving my house when he was shot. There was no robbery, no crime as they want people to believe, just a senseless and unlawful killing carried out under the guise of law enforcement.”

Recounting the harrowing events that led to his younger brother’s death on July 31, 2025, Ibrahim Baba Bukari stressed that the police operation raises serious concerns and has left him with the strong conviction that he, not his brother, was the intended target of the attack.

“The police shot and killed my brother, but I am sure it was not a random incident, and I was the main target of that operation.”

The grieving family, who are pointing accusing fingers at the police, are calling on the Inspector General of Police, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, for an independent investigation into the deliberate and unjustifiable killing of Seidu Bukari by the police.

Hulk Hogan’s cause of death revealed

0

Professional wrestler Hulk Hogan died of a heart attack, according to authorities.

Hogan’s official cause of death is cited as “acute myocardial infarction”, which in layman’s terms means a heart attack, according to a cremation approval summary report from the medical examiner’s office in Pinellas County, Florida, shared with CNN on Thursday.

The medical examiner’s office also confirmed that Hogan, whose given name was Terry Gene Bollea, had a history of an irregular heartbeat and blood cancer, conditions that are cited as contributing factors to his death.

His manner of death was ruled as “natural.” The office stipulated in an email to CNN that no autopsy or exam was performed, and that Hogan’s death was certified by his primary care physician.

Hogan died last week in Florida after police and fire personnel responded to his home following a report of an individual in cardiac arrest, police previously told CNN. He was 71.

He was transported to Morton Plant Hospital after being treated by fire and rescue crews, where he was pronounced dead. Police later said in a news conference that there were no signs of suspicious activity in his death, and an investigation is ongoing.

“WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away. One of pop culture’s most recognisable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s,” World Wrestling Entertainment said in a statement posted on X at the time. “WWE extends its condolences to Hogan’s family, friends, and fans.”

One of the most widely recognised and biggest wrestling stars of all time, Hogan helped the WWE rise in popularity and become the behemoth that it is today.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Hogan became a household name and a crossover mainstream star, starring in movies and recognised around the world.

He is best known for his larger-than-life personality during wrestling’s “golden era,” with his rivalries with other pro wrestlers of the era, including “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and “Macho Man” Randy Savage, among others, making professional wrestling a multi-billion-dollar industry.

Throughout his wrestling career, Hogan was part of several organisations including World Wrestling Federation (WWF), World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and Total Nonstop Action (TNA).

As part of ongoing efforts to broaden access to technical and vocational education, the Member of Parliament for the Salaga South Constituency in the Savannah Region, Hajia Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, has partnered with the government to construct an ultra-modern Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institute.

During an official visit to the proposed construction site, accompanied by a delegation from the Ministry of Education, the MP—who also serves as a member of the Board of Governors of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation—pledged her full support for the successful implementation of the TVET Senior High School project in the constituency.

According to her, the project, when completed, will serve as a bridge for the missing link in promoting skills development among the youth, particularly in underserved communities.

She emphasized that it will pave the way for economic empowerment and a brighter future for the large youth population in the area.

She expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Paramount Chief of the Kpembi Traditional Area and his sub-chiefs, the Municipal Chief Executive, heads of institutions, security agencies, and the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their individual and collective commitment to the project and the overall development of the constituency.

As the only female legislator in the Savannah Region, Hajia Zuwera reaffirmed her readiness to facilitate the completion of the project, reiterating her unwavering commitment to education and skills development in the constituency.

The Paramount Chief of the Kpembi Traditional Area, Yiram Kpembewura Bambanye Ndefoso IV, expressed great excitement about the project and gave his full blessing for its commencement. In a demonstration of leadership and support, the chief released 15 hectares of land along the Salaga-Kafaba road for the construction of the institute.

The team from the Ministry of Education, after conducting a thorough assessment, expressed satisfaction with the chosen location and commended the traditional authorities for their cooperation and enthusiasm. They assured the MP of timely and high-quality delivery of the facility, in alignment with the vision of President John Dramani Mahama to reposition technical and vocational education in Ghana.

High Court backs Ghanaian developer in $5.2m dispute with Pan-African financier

0

The Commercial Division of the Accra High Court has ruled in favour of Ghanaian real estate developer Blue Rose Ltd in a long-standing legal battle against Pan-African housing finance institution, The Company for Habitat and Housing.

The case revolved around the institution’s failure to disburse a $5.2 million loan facility under a 2016 agreement intended to fund a large-scale housing development.

Presiding over the case, His Lordship Justice Samuel Djanie Kotey delivered judgment on Thursday, July 24, 2025, finding that the defendant breached the terms of the contract by unjustifiably withholding the loan, despite the plaintiff satisfying all pre-disbursement conditions required under the agreement.

The dispute originated from a loan agreement signed between Blue Rose Ltd and The Company for Habitat and Housing on December 15, 2016.

The agreement stipulated that the defendant would provide $5.2 million, approximately 64% of the total cost of constructing 170 housing units in Ghana, while Blue Rose Ltd would contribute the remaining $2.9 million (36%).

A subsequent amendment in October 2017 slightly altered the equity ratio, with the defendant’s contribution reducing to 63.17% and the plaintiff’s increasing to 36.83%.

Under the terms, disbursement of the loan was contingent upon Blue Rose Ltd injecting its equity contribution into the project, a condition that had to be verified on-site by the defendant.

Although all other pre-disbursement conditions were reportedly fulfilled by the plaintiff, the defendant insisted that this particular requirement had not been met, thereby stalling the release of the funds.

In his judgment, Justice Kotey emphasised that the evidence showed Blue Rose Ltd had indeed met the relevant conditions for the first disbursement as of August 2017, referencing exhibits presented during the trial.

He observed that the defendant’s prolonged delay, amounting to 17 months, significantly eroded the value of the contract’s 36-month moratorium period, and that the plaintiff was justified in repudiating the agreement.

“This constituted a breach of the contract by the defendant,” the judge noted. “The letter of repudiation by the plaintiff was therefore justified owing to the conduct of the defendant in breach of the agreement.”

The plaintiff had sought over $1.1 million in special damages for expenses incurred due to the defendant’s non-performance.

While the court did not uphold the full amount, it validated several specific costs related to the loan transaction, including legal fees, appraisal fees, commitment charges, and front-end fees.

These were backed by documentary evidence, including various bank transfers and official payment receipts.

In addition to partial special damages, the court also awarded Blue Rose Ltd general damages of GH¢ 500,000 for the breach of contract.

It cited a 2011 Supreme Court precedent (Tema Oil Refinery v. African Automobile Ltd) in affirming that such damages must account for both foreseeable losses and those reasonably contemplated by the parties at the time of contracting.

Justice Kotey stated that the damages should “erode the effect of the breach… particularly to the plaintiff’s projected sales and financial obligations incurred under the contract.”

The court also ordered the defendant to pay costs of GH¢100,000 to the plaintiff.

Blue Rose Ltd was represented by legal counsel Anthony Parker-Allotey, with Robert Pappoe holding the brief of Alfred Bannerman Williams Jnr for the plaintiff.

The defendant’s legal team, comprising Esther Ofosuhene and Kwadwo Ohene Boakye, held the brief of Benjamin Kpakpo Sackar.

The defendant, The Company for Habitat and Housing, was absent at the final judgment.

Nigeria’s Obasanjo proposes Africa Health Fund to tackle continental health

0

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has proposed the creation of a dedicated Africa Health Fund to provide sustainable, Africa-led financing for health infrastructure and emergency response systems across the continent.

Speaking at the Africa Health Sovereignty Summit in Accra, he said the fund would reduce dependency on delayed foreign assistance and empower African nations to address their own health challenges with speed, resilience, and autonomy.

He said the fund could be modelled on the African Union Peace Fund, which had already proven effective in responding to continental crises.

Recounting his own experience as a special envoy to the Horn of Africa, Mr. Obasanjo noted how a lack of immediate donor support delayed interventions in Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The former Nigerian President explained, “When I was handling the situation in Ethiopia, they were waiting for European money or American money before I could start. But when we started using the AU Peace Fund, things changed. If we can do this for peace, we can certainly do it for health.”

Mr. Obasanjo proposed a $100 levy on flights into and out of Africa, excluding intra-African travel to generate seed capital.

The levy, he said, would serve as an initial contribution to the health fund, which he suggested could be managed by the African Development Bank (AfDB).

He also urged African governments to explore additional innovative sources to grow the fund into a robust financial mechanism for both emergency health response and long-term health infrastructure development.

The summit is expected to culminate in the adoption of the Accra Compact, a bold declaration for health sovereignty that outlines a new roadmap for health governance.

It also includes the launch of initiatives like SUSTAIN, which seeks to mobilise domestic and diaspora funding for health reforms.

While calling for Africa’s financial self-reliance, Mr. Obasanjo stressed the importance of global solidarity and cooperation, and that “Our slogan should not be Africa Beyond Aid. It should be Africa Health Without Aid, but with global partnership and support.”

He stated, “Pandemics know no borders. We have to work separately and together for health security for all.”

Mr Obasanjo further proposed that 25 per cent of national health insurance funds across African countries be earmarked for infrastructure investments.

The former President urged African nations to stop viewing health as a consumption burden and instead see it as a strategic investment in national development, emphasizing that, “Health is not a drain on our resources,” he said. “It is the foundation of our national security and development.”

The elder statesman also advocated for strengthening traditional medicine as part of a broader community-level health strategy.

Mr. Obasanjo reminded participants of Africa’s resilience in past health crises such as HIV/AIDS, Ebola, and COVID-19, urging the continent to build on those experiences.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, who opened the Africa Health Sovereignty Summit, called for urgent reform of global health governance, declaring that Africa must no longer be a passive recipient of solutions but the author and architect of its own health destiny.

He described the current global health framework as outdated and unfit for a multipolar world facing intersecting crises, from pandemics to climate shocks and widening inequality.

“We are here by conviction, shared purpose, and a collective refusal to accept the limits imposed on us by an outdated global health order,” he said.

He announced two major commitments to drive the agenda forward: the establishment of a Presidential High-Level Task Force on Global Health Governance, and the launch of the SUSTAIN Initiative, a continent-led platform to align national budgets with health priorities and scale up domestic investment.

President Mahama emphasised that health must be treated as a capital investment, not a social cost, urging African nations to mobilise public, private, and diasporic capital to build resilient, data-driven health systems.

African Summit Looks For Solutions To Health Funding Crisis

0

Summit host, Ghana’s President John Mahama.

“Africa needs health without aid,” former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo told the continental health sovereignty summit in Accra, Ghana, on Tuesday.

He appealed to leaders to establish a health fund under the auspices of the African Development Bank, funded initially by an airline tax on tourists flying to African countries – an idea that has been floating around the African Union for the past few years.

Obasanjo addressed the opening of the summit, convened by Ghana’s President John Mahama in response to the 40% reduction in development aid in the past two years – the steepest cuts taking place over the past eight months since US President Donald Trump assumed office.

Obasanjo, one of the sponsors of the summit, urged leaders not to “wring their hands” but “find solutions” to the funding crisis.

Olusegun Obasanjo, former president of Nigeria, was one of the drivers of the summit.

Mahama said he was building on the momentum from other countries, including Rwandan President Paul Kagame, to mobilise more funds for health during a time of “overlapping and intensifying global crisis” – caused by wars, pandemics, climate shocks, economic volatility and widening inequalities.

“This is not merely a funding gap. It is a crisis of imagination, a vacuum of solidarity and a deep failure of shared responsibility,” said Mahama.

Presidential task team

He announced the formation of the Presidential High Level Task Force on Global Health Governance, a platform for African leaders to engage with global and continental partners and to redesign the health governance system.

“The world has changed, but global health governance has not kept pace with the changing world. At this moment, we’re called to redesign the architecture that has, for far too long, excluded Africa’s voices, excluded Africa’s needs and innovations.”

He acknowledged that the abrupt loss of US funding had brought the country’s community-based health delivery model “to its knees”.

In response to the cuts, Ghana has uncapped its national health insurance scheme financing and launched the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, to mobilise capital to tackle chronic diseases.

Mahama also announced that a health tool called SUSTAIN is being rolled out to assist governments to identify all their domestic and international sources of health funding, identify gaps and plan for sustainability.

SUSTAIN (an acronym for Scaling Up Sovereign Transitions and Institutional Networks), will also assist countries to mobilise funding from the private sector, philanthropic partners and the Africa diaspora, said Mahama.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has also offered technical assistance to countries to mobilise more resources.

Opportunity for self-reliance

Dr Tedros addresses the summit

WHO Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told the summit that the “sudden and steep cuts to aid” is “causing the most severe disruptions to health systems since the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic”.

Tedros added that, according to WHO’s latest analysis, “health aid is projected to decline by up to 40% this year compared to just two years ago. This is not a gradual shift – it is a cliff edge. Lifesaving medicines are sitting in warehouses, health workers are losing jobs, clinics are closing, and millions are missing care.”

However, within the crisis lies “an opportunity to shake off the yoke of aid dependency, and embrace a new era of sovereignty, self-reliance, and solidarity”, Tedros said.

“Africa does not need charity. Africa needs fair terms.”

He urged countries to develop health benefit packages for essential services, and raise money from health taxes on tobacco, alcohol and sugary drinks.

African countries can also save through pooled procurement for medicines, investment in domestic manufacturing and better budget execution using digital public financial management systems.

But Tedros warned that up to 13% of health budgets in low- and middle-income countries go unspent due to weak public financial systems.

Tedros warned that debt service burdens are crowding out social investments, while the illicit flow of money is weakening economies.

“In 2023, Africa received $74 billion in aid – but lost $90 billion to illicit financial flows and $55 billion to corporate tax exemptions,” said Tedros. “Africa lost much more than it gained. This is unacceptable.”

Mahama urged countries to reject the “outdated notion” that health drains their economies, instead insure that finance ministers frame health as a capital investment and a “productivity multiplier and not a consumption expense”.

“The WHO has shown that for every $1 invested in health resilience yields up to $4 in returns. This return is even greater in Africa, where youthful populations represent latent economic dynamism.”

NDC USA Vice Chair fires Afenyo-Markin after Bagbin rebuke

Moses Klu Mensah is Vice Chairman of the United States Chapter of the National Democratic Congress Moses Klu Mensah is Vice Chairman of the United States Chapter of the National Democratic Congress

The Vice Chairman of the United States Chapter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Moses Klu Mensah, has taken a swipe at the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, describing him as a “Dzimakpla” – an Ewe expression for an “untrained child.”

His remarks come after the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, cautioned Members of Parliament (MPs) against making personal comments about colleagues, following a heated exchange in the House involving the Effutu MP and the Essikado-Ketan MP, Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah.

Afenyo-Markin had raised eyebrows when he questioned the “strange reasons” for Dr Ayensu-Danquah’s nomination as Deputy Minister of Health, suggesting she was favoured over other qualified female MPs, including the NDC’s Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings.

Speaker Bagbin was visibly unimpressed, reminding MPs that such conduct violates Parliament’s Standing Orders.

“If you want to talk about the conduct of a member, a judge, you can only do it by a substantive motion,” he cautioned.

He further urged MPs to uphold courtesy, especially towards female colleagues, warning that personal attacks could “destroy our democracy.”

Bagbin added, “We were all brought up well by our elders, let’s continue that way please.”

But Klu Mensah, in a strongly-worded Facebook post, went further, accusing Afenyo-Markin of arrogance, political grandstanding, and of suffering from what he called “micro-minority leadership syndrome.”

“His position as leader of the micro minority seems to have completely gone to his head. Ghanaians deserve humility and service, not self‑promotion and theatrics,” he wrote.

The NDC USA Vice Chair further alleged that Afenyo-Markin is more concerned about “media optics” than delivering real solutions to Ghana’s challenges. “Ghanaians are watching, and they are taking notes,” he warned.

Netanyahu meets security officials as Israel considers full Gaza takeover

0

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met senior security officials to finalise a new strategy for the nearly two-year war in the Gaza Strip, his office said on Tuesday, with media reporting he favoured a complete military takeover of the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territory.

Despite intense international pressure for a ceasefire to ease hunger and appalling conditions in the besieged enclave, efforts to mediate a truce between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which governs Gaza, have collapsed.

Local health authorities said at least 20 people were killed by Israeli gunfire as they waited for United Nations aid trucks in the northern Gaza Strip. In southern Gaza, 20 people were wounded by Israeli gunfire as they waited to get aid from U.N. aid trucks near Morag Square near Rafah, medics said.

Eight more people died of starvation or malnutrition in the last day, Gaza’s Health Ministry said, while at least 80 people were killed in the latest Israeli firing.

Netanyahu’s office said in a statement that the prime minister had held a “limited security discussion” lasting about three hours during which military Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir “presented the options for continuing the campaign in Gaza”.

An Israeli official had earlier told Reuters that Defence Minister Israel Katz and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, a confidant of Netanyahu, would also attend the meeting to decide on a strategy to take to the cabinet this week. Israeli media reported on Tuesday that the cabinet would convene on Thursday at 6 p.m. (1500 GMT).

Israel’s Channel 12, citing an official from Netanyahu’s office, had said the prime minister was leaning towards taking control of the entire territory. That would reverse a 2005 decision to withdraw Israeli citizens and soldiers from Gaza, while retaining control over its borders, airspace and utilities, a move right-wing parties blame for Hamas gaining power there in the 2006 election.

It was unclear, however, whether Netanyahu was foreseeing a prolonged takeover or a short-term operation aimed at dismantling Hamas and freeing Israeli hostages. The prime minister’s office declined to comment on the Channel 12 report.

“It is still necessary to complete the defeat of the enemy in Gaza, release our hostages and ensure that Gaza never again constitutes a threat to Israel,” Netanyahu told new recruits at a military base. “We are not giving up on any of these missions.”

The U.N. called reports about a possible decision to expand Israel’s military operations throughout the Gaza Strip “deeply alarming” if true.

U.S. President Donald Trump declined to say whether the U.S., Israel’s closest military ally, supported Netanyahu’s plans.

“I know that we are there now trying to get people fed,” Trump told reporters. “As far as the rest of it, I really can’t say. That’s going to be pretty much up to Israel.”

On Saturday, Hamas released a video of the Israeli hostage Evyatar David, appearing emaciated in what seemed to be an underground tunnel. The images shocked Israelis and sparked international condemnation.

Throughout the war, there has been sustained international pressure on Hamas to release the remaining 50 people taken hostage in 2023, of whom Israeli officials estimate 20 are still alive. Most hostages have been released during ceasefires following diplomatic negotiations. Israel broke the last ceasefire.

PRESSURE TACTIC?

A Palestinian official said the suggestion of a full Israeli military takeover of Gaza may be a tactic to pressure Hamas into concessions, while the Palestinian Foreign Ministry urged foreign nations to take heed of the reports.

“The ministry urges countries and the international community to treat these leaks with utmost seriousness and to intervene urgently to prevent their implementation, whether these leaks are meant to exert pressure, test international reactions, or are genuine and serious,” it said.

Israel’s coalition government, the most right-wing and religiously conservative in its history, includes far-right politicians who advocate the annexation of both Gaza and the West Bank and encourage Palestinians to leave their homeland.

The International Court of Justice said in 2024 that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories is illegal and should end soon.

Nearly two years of fighting in Gaza have strained Israel’s military, which has a small standing army and has had to repeatedly mobilise reservists; some military leaders have warned against expanding the military occupation.

In a sign of differences between some members of Israel’s ruling coalition and the military, far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir challenged military head Zamir to state he would comply with government directives even if a decision was made to take all of Gaza.

The statement from Netanyahu’s office said the Israeli Defence Forces were “prepared to implement any decision that will be made by the Political-Security Cabinet.”

HUNGER

The war was triggered when Hamas-led militants attacked Israeli communities and military bases near Gaza on October 7, 2023. About 1,200 people, including more than 700 civilians, were killed, and 251 hostages were taken to Gaza.

Israel’s military response has devastated the tiny, crowded enclave, killing more than 61,000 people, mostly civilians, according to Palestinian health authorities.

Israel’s campaign has forced nearly all of Gaza’s more than 2 million people from their homes and caused what a global hunger monitor called last week an unfolding famine.

Some 188 Palestinians, including 94 children, have died from hunger since the war began, according to Gaza authorities.

On Tuesday, Israeli tanks pushed into central Gaza, but it was not clear if the move was part of a larger ground offensive.

Palestinians living in the last quarter of the territory where Israel has not yet taken military control, via ground incursions or demands for civilians to leave, said any new push would be catastrophic.

“If the tanks pushed through, where would we go, into the sea?” said Abu Jehad, a Gaza wood merchant. “This will be like a death sentence to the entire population.”

Ghana Herbal Conference organisers pay courtesy call on Ashanti Regional Minister ahead of Nov. event

0

The organising committee of the Ghana Herbal Conference has paid a courtesy call on the Ashanti Regional Minister at his office in Kumasi ahead of the Ghana Herbal Conference, 2025.

The visit was to formally congratulate Dr. Frank Amoakohene on his appointment as the Ashanti Regional Minister and to discuss the upcoming Ghana Herbal Conference slated for December 3rd or 5th, 2025, at the Prempeh Assembly Hall in Kumasi.

The delegation, led by members of the planning and technical committee of the Ghana Herbal Conference, used the opportunity to introduce themselves and the conference to the Minister.

They also extended an official invitation to the Minister and expressed the hope that the Ministry would support efforts to promote the herbal medicine industry in Ghana.

Dr. Frank Amoakohene, while expressing gratitude for the visit and the congratulatory message, pledged his support for the upcoming event.

He noted that the Ghana Herbal Conference aligns with the government’s broader agenda of promoting local industries, preserving indigenous knowledge systems, and expanding access to alternative healthcare.

He further emphasised the importance of herbal medicine in Ghana’s public health space and its potential for economic empowerment, especially among rural communities and traditional medicine practitioners.

“The government of Ghana has, in recent years, taken active steps to support the herbal medicine sector. This includes the integration of herbal medicine into selected public hospitals through the Centre for Plant Medicine Research (CPMR), as well as the Food and Drugs Authority’s continued efforts in regulating and registering herbal products to ensure public safety and international competitiveness.

“Additionally, the Health Ministry has been collaborating with traditional medicine practitioners to strengthen research, improve quality control, and develop a national policy framework for traditional and alternative medicine,” Dr. Amoakohene stated.

The Chief Director for Global Media Alliance, Ms. Emma Wenani, expressed her gratitude to the Minister for welcoming the team to his office and accepting the invitation extended to him.

“We are grateful for your willingness to support the Ghana Herbal Conference and for accepting our invitation.

“We look forward to more collaborations to championing indigenous herbal knowledge, promoting safe and effective herbal medical practices, and fostering innovation in the herbal medicine sector,” she mentioned.

The organisers of the Ghana Herbal Conference expressed optimism that the active involvement of government stakeholders, especially regional leadership, would significantly boost participation, stakeholder engagement, and public trust in herbal medicine initiatives.

They further assured the Minister that the November 2025 conference would serve as a strategic platform for investment, policy advocacy, and the celebration of Ghana’s rich herbal heritage.

The Ghana Herbal Conference 2025, under the theme “Harmony in Herbalism: Balancing Tradition & Innovation, is committed to championing indigenous herbal knowledge, promoting safe and effective herbal medical practices, and fostering innovation within the herbal industry.

It is committed to advancing the country’s herbal medicine industry by fostering dialogue, collaboration, and scientific research aimed at promoting development and standardisation.

With a focus on global recognition, the conference envisions positioning Ghana as a leading hub for high-quality, evidence-based herbal medicine and indigenous health systems.

The conference, organised by Global Media Alliance (GMA), will feature plenary sessions, exhibitions, product showcases, stakeholder engagement, and live herbal demonstrations.

Trump administration formally axes Elon Musk’s ‘five things’ email

0

The Trump administration on Tuesday formally axed a program launched by billionaire former Trump adviser Elon Musk requiring federal employees to summarise their five workplace achievements from the prior week, as first reported by Reuters.

The Office of Personnel Management, the federal human resources agency that implemented Musk’s push to slash the federal workforce, announced the end of the “five things” email via a memo that rescinds guidance instructing workers to comply with the initiative.

“At OPM, we believe that managers are accountable to staying informed about what their team members are working on and have many other existing tools to do so,” OPM Director Scott Kupor said in a statement, adding the agency told government HR representatives that OPM would no longer manage the process nor use it internally.

While many federal agencies had already phased out compliance with the weekly email, the move signals the Trump administration is turning the page on one of Musk’s most unpopular initiatives following a falling out between the two men in early June.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Musk, who spent over a quarter of a billion dollars to help Trump win November’s presidential election, led the Department of Government Efficiency’s efforts to slash the budget and cut the federal workforce until his departure in May to refocus on his tech empire.

Musk initially received a warm White House sendoff from Trump, but then incurred the president’s wrath by describing Trump’s tax cut and spending bill as an abomination.

Trump pulled the nomination of Musk ally and tech entrepreneur Jared Isaacman to lead NASA and later threatened to cancel billions of dollars worth of federal contracts with Musk’s companies after the blowup between the two men.

The “five things” email, launched by Musk in February to boost accountability, sparked tensions with department chiefs who were blindsided by the weekend email mandating the move. It also fueled confusion among government workers who received mixed messages about whether and how to comply.

Reuters reported in March that the White House installed two Trump loyalists at OPM to ensure better policy coordination between the White House and the agency.

Scott Kupor, a venture capitalist who took the helm at OPM in July, foreshadowed the end of the initiative last month, describing processing of the weekly response emails as “very manual” and “not efficient.”

It is “something that we should look at and see, like, are we getting the value out of it that at least the people who put it in place thought they were,” he said.

‘Jandam Communicator’ – Shamima Muslim clashes with Musah-Saaka over real prices of commodities

0

Shamima Muslim (L) and Lawuratu Musah-Saaka (R) clashed over the prices of goods and services Shamima Muslim (L) and Lawuratu Musah-Saaka (R) clashed over the prices of goods and services

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Shamima Muslim clashed with Lawuratu Musah-Saaka, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, over the prices of goods and services in the country during the Tuesday, August 5, 2025 edition of the Good Morning Show.

During the panel discussion on Metro TV, Shamima Muslim described some NPP communicators as “jandam propaganda communicators,” who are doing all they can to discount the strides the country has made so far under the John Dramani Mahama government.

The term “jandam” is used to describe a type of journalism perceived as deceptive or manipulative.

The Deputy Presidential Spokesperson stated that despite Ghanaians attesting to a reduction in the prices of goods and services, NPP communicators are channeling out false narratives to claim that prices are getting worse.

“Even with agricultural products that are seasonal, we are seeing marginal drops in prices. We have seen videos of market women themselves speak about how they have lowered the price of their goods and services,” she said.

Lawuratu Musah-Saaka took issue with Shamima’s use of the phrase “jandam propaganda communicator,” accusing her of personalizing the discussion.

“Shamima can sit here and use all kinds of adjectives on me. Call me dishonest. But, fundamentally, it takes one to know one,” she retorted,

She insisted that prices of some items are not reducing in all markets, as asserted by proponents of the government, claiming that the price of kenkey has increased to GH¢7.

The Deputy Presidential Spokesperson interjected, saying that there is nowhere in Ghana where kenkey is sold at GH¢7 to ordinary Ghanaians.

The two then started engaging in a shouting contest, with each defending her stance.

This forced the host of the show to intervene, but her intervention did not sit well with the NPP communicator.

Villarreal stay focused on Thomas Partey move despite ongoing legal issues – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

Villarreal are moving with intent to complete the signing of Thomas Partey, seeing him as a key piece in their Champions League return.

The Spanish club believe the Ghanaian midfielder can add bite and experience to their midfield, and talks are progressing fast despite growing noise around the move.

On August 5, Partey appeared in a London court where he faced five rape charges and one count of sexual assault. He was granted conditional bail, allowing him to travel and work while awaiting trial, which is set to resume at the Old Bailey on September 2.

Villarreal, however, have not stepped back. The Yellow Submarine already have a full agreement in place with the former Arsenal player. He is expected to sign a two-year deal with an option for a third.

Though some fans have voiced concern, the club is focused on Partey’s value on the pitch. Known for his physical presence and ball-winning ability, he would arrive on a free transfer following the end of his Arsenal contract.

The deal could be wrapped up in the coming days as Villarreal prepare their squad for Europe.

National Identification Authority Cuts Off Ghana Revenue Authority Over GHC376M Debt

0

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has disconnected the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) from its Identity Verification Service (IVS) platform over a debt exceeding GHC 376 million.

The move, effective August 5, follows what NIA describes as months of failed attempts to get GRA to pay or commit to a plan.

Why it matters

The IVS platform enables real-time identity verification using the Ghana Card and is vital for services across both public and private sectors.

The disconnection could disrupt operations dependent on ID authentication, including those of ECG, Lands Commission, and fintechs.

What they’re saying

We have written to them countless times… even escalated it to Parliament,” said NIA’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah Darlas, on Citi Eyewitness News.

“We gave them our last notice on July 29. We didn’t hear from them, so effective August 5, we blocked them.”

Darlas added that several institutions, including ECG, the Lands Commission, and Hubtel, have been accessing the NIA’s database through GRA — a move he says violates existing laws and further compounds the problem.

The big picture

  • The NIA says unpaid debts are affecting its operational capacity.
  • Unauthorized third-party access through GRA is a breach of data laws.
  • The situation underscores gaps in inter-agency accountability and threatens the reliability of a critical national infrastructure.

What’s next

The NIA is calling for swift government intervention to ensure the continuity and sustainability of its systems. The GRA has yet to publicly respond.

Speak out on agitation to make you ‘King of Ghana’ – Kwesi Pratt to President Mahama

Kwesi Pratt Jnr (L) has criticised the silence of President John Mahama on third term suggestions Kwesi Pratt Jnr (L) has criticised the silence of President John Mahama on third term suggestions

Veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr has urged President John Dramani Mahama to speak out on suggestions that the 1992 Constitution of Ghana should be amended so he can run for the presidency for a third term.

Kwesi Pratt Jnr, who is the managing editor of The Insight, asserted that President Mahama must speak up on the suggestions and set the record straight because of the seriousness of the issue.

He added that the president’s silence on the issue is emboldening people to continue making the suggestion, which, according to him, must not be encouraged because it makes no sense.

“The suggestion that out of 35 million citizens of Ghana, only one person can be a good President is extremely foolish and must not be encouraged.

“I have known President Mahama for a very long time, and I am convinced that he is not power-hungry, but his silence on this issue only encourages those who seek to misuse his popularity and apparent good work,” Kwesi Pratt Jnr wrote in a post shared on X on August 4, 2025.

He added, “I encourage the President to speak out against the agitation from very strange sources to make him the #KingOfGhana.”

The veteran journalist expressed grave concern over the calls by a section of the public for the amendment of Article 66 of the Constitution, which limits presidential terms to two terms, so President Mahama could go for a third term.

Kwesi Pratt recounted how one of Ghana’s military leaders, Colonel Ignatius Kutu Acheampong, who, according to him, was one of the best leaders the country has had, lost the favour of Ghanaians when he attempted to extend his stay in office and eventually lost his life.

“Acheampong’s popularity took a nose-dive when he sought to introduce the Union Government idea, and the general perception was that he wanted to extend his stay in power indefinitely. The resistance was massive, and crucial state resources were diverted from production and put into useless charm projects. The economy suffered,” he wrote.

GHS52m available for Appiate 3rd-phase redevelopment

0

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing the redevelopment of Appiate, a community devastated by a mining explosives disaster in 2022.

During a visit to the area, the Minister assured residents that plans are underway to commence the third phase of the redevelopment project. He revealed that out of a total of GHS112 million mobilised through the Appiate Support Fund, GHS60 million has already been used to complete Phases I and II of the reconstruction.

He explained that the remaining GHS52 million will be allocated to the third phase, pending the finalisation of land issues with local chiefs.

“When I became a minister, President Mahama gave me one instruction, that is to ensure that all outstanding projects in Appiate are completed. The donations on the list are a lot. The money we had in total was GHS112 million. So far, we have spent roughly GHS60 million for Phases I and II.

“GHS52 million is left. We were asked when we will resume work. Once the land issues are sorted, we will commence,” he stated.

The Appiate Support Fund was established in response to the tragic explosion that occurred in 2022 when a truck transporting explosives for mining activities was involved in an accident in the town.

The incident claimed dozens of lives and left over a hundred others injured. The explosion completely razed the community, prompting the then government to set up the fund to support reconstruction efforts.

So far, the Fund has received millions of cedis in donations from individuals, institutions, and corporate bodies, all aimed at rebuilding Appiate and restoring livelihoods.

Apaak warns staff against aiding exam malpractice

0

The Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Clement Abas Apaak, has cautioned teaching and non-teaching staff against aiding examination malpractice during the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

In a statement, Dr Apaak warned that any staff found culpable would face severe punishment.

“The integrity of our examinations is non-negotiable, and all teaching and non-teaching staff are expected to uphold the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and accountability,” he stated.

The 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) began on Tuesday, August 5, with practical papers. A total of 461,640 final-year Senior High School students—comprising 207,381 males and 254,259 females—are participating across the country.

According to him, the Ministry is working closely with the Ghana Education Service, the West African Examinations Council, and security agencies to prevent any form of malpractice.

“We urge all personnel to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity before, during, or after examinations. Protecting the fairness of the examination process is a collective responsibility of all.

“We expect all stakeholders to work together to maintain a culture of integrity and to ensure that students succeed based on merit,” he said.

The Deputy Minister further stressed that the Ministry would not shield anyone found to have engaged in any attempt to aid or abet examination irregularities.

“There must be zero tolerance for exam malpractice across the country; the young ones must grow in integrity and let no one of them be associated with exam malpractice,” he added.

Dr Apaak also encouraged candidates to remain focused and confident as they sit for the examination.

“You have what it takes to succeed with integrity. Believe in yourselves and go into the examination room knowing that your best effort is enough,” he advised.

Ghana needs a proper movie distribution system, not YouTube

Ghanaian filmmaker Socrate Safo has stated that the country’s movie industry needs a well-structured distribution system if it wants to grow and compete with other markets.

In an interview on Hitz FM on August 5, 2025, he noted that the current situation, where most filmmakers rely solely on YouTube to distribute their movies, is not sustainable and does not generate sufficient revenue.

“As an industry, let’s sit and come up with a structured channel of distribution. Check every country that has developed; they didn’t start from where we see them today. They had challenges, and then they came up with regulations to fix them. As we speak now, the biggest challenge facing the industry is the channel of distribution,” Socrate said.

He explained that countries with strong film industries encountered similar issues in the past but overcame them by creating proper structures.

According to him, Ghana’s movie industry has yet to address this critical problem, leaving filmmakers with very few viable options for distributing their work after production.

He questioned the current trend of relying heavily on YouTube as the main outlet, pointing out that it is not profitable for the majority of content creators.

“When we finish a film, how do we distribute it? Is YouTube a profitable channel of distribution? Just because someone claims to be making money on YouTube, everyone is following that path. But when you talk to them, most of them aren’t actually making money,” he added.

Africa must take bold steps to achieve health sovereignty

Kwabena Mintah Akandoh is the Minister of Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh is the Minister of Health

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has urged African countries to take bold and deliberate steps toward achieving health sovereignty.

Speaking at the African Health Sovereignty Summit on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, the Minister criticised the continent’s longstanding dependency on donor aid and external health interventions.

“We are here to re-imagine and co-create a future where Africa owns its health destiny, where the care of African lives does not depend on goodwill from afar, but on wisdom, solidarity, and investment from within,” he stated.

He explained that health sovereignty is not about detachment from the global community, but about strengthening Africa’s capacity and leadership in health.

“Health sovereignty is not isolation, but the ability to make binding decisions, deploy domestic capacity, and exercise leadership over the systems that determine whether our people live or die.

“For decades, our continent has been spoken to often with goodwill but rarely on equal footing,” Akandoh added.

The summit brought together African leaders, policymakers, and development partners to forge a new path focused on sustainability, equity, and continental leadership in health governance.

‘Re-engineer the area, don’t demolish homes’ – Tema Central MP tells Govt

0

Member of Parliament for Tema Central, Charles Forson, has called on the government to adopt a more consultative and constructive approach to addressing encroachments on Ramsar sites, particularly within the Greater Accra Region.

His comments come in the wake of ongoing demolitions of structures sited on protected wetlands, including portions within his own constituency.

In an exclusive interview on Channel One Newsroom on Tuesday, August 5, Mr. Forson criticised the approach taken by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, insisting that demolition alone was not a sustainable solution.

He argued that instead of destroying already built properties, the government should re-engineer the area and explore ways to integrate existing structures into a well-planned urban development scheme.

The Tema Central MP maintained that while environmental protection is necessary, there must be a balanced approach that considers the investments and livelihoods of affected residents.

“The development has been done. The Minister ought to sit down with the developers. We need to regularise the lands. Take money from them. Let us develop the landscape. Let us develop the roads. Let us develop the drainage system. I believe that pulling the buildings down is not going to help because if you pull them down, what next?

“We need to re-engineer the whole place. If you go to some cities which are in lower-lying lands, they have developed them. Why do you go and pull so many houses down? The Minister and the government should consider the stand they have taken,” he stated.

Meanwhile, some residents whose buildings sit on portions of the Ramsar sites in Tema and Sakumono in the Greater Accra Region have petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to intervene in the ongoing demolitions in the area.

The petitioners contend that their lands were legally acquired from the Forestry Commission, with some claiming they have taken steps to preserve the environment rather than harm it.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, one of the affected residents, Jerry Narhyumu, stated that while they acknowledge the ecological significance of the area, they do not believe they have broken any laws.

Narhyumu also noted that the area is not flood-prone and that many residents have lived there since 2019 without incident. He called for continued dialogue under the new administration, stressing the need for policy continuity to find a lasting resolution.

Ramsar sites are internationally recognised wetlands protected for their environmental value. However, increasing encroachment in recent years has led to state-led demolitions aimed at preserving their ecological integrity.

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, has expressed concern over the significant decline in remittance inflows into the country, suggesting that both changing economic behavior and possible irregularities within the industry may be contributing factors.

Speaking at the Chartered Institute of Bankers (CIB) Ghana post-MPC roundtable discussion on August 5, 2025, Dr Asiama questioned the persistent drop in remittances from the diaspora.

He stated that the Central Bank is intensifying efforts to ensure all remittance inflows intended to support the Ghanaian economy are properly accounted for.

“We have stepped up. We have issued some data directives, all in an attempt to ensure that remittance inflows from the Ghanaian diaspora, every dollar, must enter our system to support economic activity,” he said.

Dr Asiama also raised concerns about possible misconduct by some industry players, particularly International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs) and Payment Service Providers (PSPs).

“We have reason to believe that some players in the remittance space may be engaging in wrongdoing. We are investigating this, looking into the activities of IMTOs and whether some form of onshoring is occurring. Let me take this opportunity to issue a warning to any such IMTOs and PSPs,” he cautioned.

Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has clarified that the GH¢1 million promised to each Ghana Premier League club ahead of the 2025/26 season is not government-funded, but rather sourced from a new private broadcast deal.

This follows growing public curiosity about the source of the funding announced during the unveiling of a partnership between the GFA and Adesa Productions Limited on Thursday, July 31, 2025.

Speaking on Sporty FM, the GFA’s Director of Communications emphasised that the financial boost stems solely from the media rights agreement and is not tied to any state support.

“The GH¢1 million for each club from the new broadcast deal is coming from the partnership between GFA and Adesa Productions Limited, not from the government,” he stated.

The GH¢1 million allocation is part of a larger investment package intended to strengthen the local league’s competitiveness and visibility through enhanced broadcast production.

The partnership will see Adesa Productions produce live Ghana Premier League content throughout the 2025/26 season, a move expected to improve coverage quality and audience engagement.

GFA President Kurt Okraku also revealed that the deal includes performance-based rewards to motivate clubs throughout the campaign.

Ministry of Health to host Ghana vaccine manufacturing forum

0

The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the National Vaccine Institute (NVI) and in partnership with the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), has announced the upcoming Vaccine Manufacturing Forum scheduled for August 6, 2025, at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, Accra.

The event will be held on the theme -“Mobilising Sustainable Financing to Accelerate Vaccine Development and Manufacturing in Ghana: The Role of Financing Institutions and Development Partners.”

This was contained in a statement signed by Tony Goodman, Deputy Director and Spokesperson issued on August 4, 2025.

This high-level forum will bring together key state actors, financial institutions, investors, development partners, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and research institutions to explore innovative financing strategies to support Ghana’s vaccine manufacturing agenda.

The Special Guest of Honour for the forum is President John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana and the Guest of Honour is the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the need to strengthen national and regional vaccine research and biomanufacturing capabilities has become more urgent than ever.

Following this, the Government of Ghana is committed to positioning the country as a leading hub for vaccines and pharmaceuticals within the sub-region.

Despite Ghana’s solid foundation in health regulation, research and local pharmaceutical production, financing remains a major barrier to fully realising this vision. The forum seeks to mobilise sustainable investment to bridge the estimated $2.5 billion funding gap required to establish an end-to-end vaccine manufacturing ecosystem in Ghana.

GIZ and the World Bank have been supporting the Ghanaian government’s plan to be more self-sufficient in pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturing since 2021.

On behalf of the German Development Ministry (BMZ) and the European Union, GIZ is implementing a programme known as PharmaVax Ghana, which is closely aligned with the National Vaccine Institute’s (NVI) objectives.

Meanwhile, local pharmaceutical manufacturers such as Atlantic Lifesciences Ltd and DEK Vaccines Ltd have signed Memoranda of Understanding with various international partners to advance technology transfer agreements aimed at enabling vaccine fill-and-finish operations within Ghana.

The upcoming forum will serve as a platform for dialogue among stakeholders across both the public and private sectors. It aims to:

  • Explore blended finance opportunities and Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs);

  • Identify supportive policy and regulatory frameworks to attract long-term investments;

  • Generate actionable proposals and partnerships to accelerate Ghana’s journey toward vaccine self-sufficiency.

To ensure broad engagement, the event will be held in a hybrid format—accommodating both in-person and virtual participation from stakeholders locally and globally.

The Ministry of Health is calling on all relevant stakeholders and development partners to join this crucial dialogue and contribute to unlocking the financial resources necessary to protect lives, foster innovation, and build a healthier, more resilient Ghana.

NIA disconnects GRA from verification platform over unpaid GH¢376m

0

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has revealed that it disconnected the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) from its Identity Verification Service (IVS) platform due to non-compliance over an outstanding debt exceeding GH¢376 million.

The disconnection, which took effect on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, follows what the NIA described as several unsuccessful attempts to get the GRA to settle the debt or commit to a payment plan.

The IVS platform is a critical national infrastructure that allows both public and private institutions to verify the identities of individuals in real time using the Ghana Card database. The disconnection has raised concerns over its potential impact on services that rely on the platform for authentication and identity verification.

Speaking in an interview with Sammi Wiafe on Eyewitness News, the Head of Corporate Affairs at the NIA, Williams Ampomah Darlas, expressed frustration over the GRA’s continued non-compliance.

“We have written to them [GRA] countless times, but we didn’t get a response from them. We decided that we will escalate it.

“We even went to the extent of escalating it to Parliament… We waited for a while, and GRA was not responding, so we gave them our last notice that was on July 29 to show commitment other than that we will block them from our system. We didn’t hear from them, so effective August 5, we blocked them,” he said.

Mr. Darlas also disclosed that other institutions, including the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the Lands Commission, and Hubtel, have been accessing the NIA’s data through the GRA without authorisation and in violation of existing laws.

“What is disheartening is that there are other institutions that are also sourcing data from the GRA, especially ECG, Lands Commission, and Hubtel, which breach the law. And we have reached out to them.

He stressed, “You have taken our data, you are not paying what you are supposed to pay to us, and you are giving the data to other institutions, breaching the law with impunity. We got to where we are now as a result of non-compliance. It saddens our hearts because we understand the implications of this. But as an Authority, we also need to work; this is affecting our operational abilities.”

The NIA has called for immediate intervention and accountability to ensure that the critical infrastructure continues to function effectively and sustainably.

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has disconnected the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) from its Identity Verification Service (IVS) platform due to indebtedness.

The GRA is said to be owing close to GH₵376 million and has refused to pay the NIA.

This has compelled the NIA to take the decision to disconnect the GRA from the system.

The NIA is seeking other options to try and completely delete its entire data from the GRA systems.

This development has started affecting exporters and importers who have been left stranded and unable to clear their goods.

The Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association, Sampson Asaki, Awingobit, told Joy FM that his members are beginning to feel the disruption in the system.

He said Customs has not been able to use the system on Tuesday and therefore is unable to link importers and exporters to their goods using the NIA system as verification.

Also speaking to Joy News, the Head of Corporate Affairs at NIA, William Ampomah, said they had written to the Data Protection Commission requesting permission to delete its data from GRA servers.

He stated that the NIA has sent a series of demand notices to the GRA regarding the debt and needs the money to operate efficiently, as it is already affecting its operations.

The GRA on its part has downplayed the impact of the disconnection.

The Deputy Commissioner in Charge of Communications and Public Affairs at the GRA, Florence Asante, said they acknowledge the disconnection by the NIA, but it has had minimal impact on the GRA’s operations.

She said the two government agencies are in talks trying to resolve the issues.

Speaking to Graphic News during the visit, McMahon revealed that King Charles III is among the artist’s admirers, even listing one of Daddy Lumba’s songs among his personal favourites on his iPhone.

“As many of you may know, King Charles… was such a fan of Daddy Lumba, and he has an iPhone playlist, and one of his favourites was a Daddy Lumba song,” he said.

McMahon emphasised the significance of his visit, stating, “I want to express Britain’s… and indeed the world’s condolences, because Daddy Lumba was a cultural pop icon. It was important to come here today to remind the family that although he is no longer with us, his influence will live on for a long time. God bless Daddy Lumba.”

The Deputy High Commissioner’s visit is part of a growing list of dignitaries paying tribute to the late musician.

Suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo does not have the option to resign – Kwame Akuffo

Kwame Akuffo is a private legal practitioner Kwame Akuffo is a private legal practitioner

Private legal practitioner Kwame Akuffo has rejected calls for suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to resign over the ongoing hearing on three petitions submitted to President John Dramani Mahama for her removal.

Speaking in a recent interview with journalist Beatrice Adu, the lawyer pointed out that he sides with Justice Torkornoo’s decision not to resign because of its implications.

He argued that the embattled Chief Justice’s resignation would mean that she knows the allegations in the three petitions for her removal are factual and would eventually catch up with her.

“To resign is to concede that you will not fight the issue, and generations that would come after us would say that she knew that she couldn’t fight the charges made against her, and that is why she bowed out honorably,” he said.

“And therefore, her position that she would fight till the last drop of sweat is respectable… I’m not too sure that even the Chief Justice wants to be restored at this stage, especially when she is in conflict with the court itself,” he added.

The private legal practitioner also stated that the 1992 Constitution of Ghana does not give the Chief Justice the option to walk away before the ongoing hearing ends.

“There are ongoing proceedings as well, and she has not reached the statutory retirement age, so she cannot resign—they are ongoing. Because there are ongoing proceedings, she has to go through them. She doesn’t have the option of resignation, constitutionally,” he said.

President John Dramani Mahama suspended Justice Torkornoo following the determination of a prima facie case in the three petitions for her removal by the Council of State.

The president set up a five-member committee chaired by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang to probe the petitions for Justice Torkornoo’s removal.

The suspended Chief Justice has filed a number of suits in the Supreme Court and the High Court challenging her suspension, but all these legal actions have been thrown out.

“Only Foolish Men Invest in Their Women” – Counsellor Lutterodt

Ghana’s most controversial relationship expert, Reverend George Lutterodt, is once again lighting up the entertainment headlines — and not for the faint-hearted.

During a heated discussion on an Accra-based television station, somewhere on 5th April, 2018, Counsellor Lutterodt boldly declared, “Only foolish men invest in women they are not married to!”
