Gold purchase programme helped stabilise Cedi, lower inflation – BoG – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Bank of Ghana has credited the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme with strengthening the country’s foreign reserves, stabilising the exchange rate, and easing inflationary pressures.

Launched in 2021, the program has played a key role in Ghana’s recent credit rating upgrade from “restrictive default” to “B-“ with a stable outlook in June 2025—boosting investor confidence.

First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Zakari Mumuni made the comment while speaking on the topic “Leveraging Commodities— The Central Bank’s View” at CNVERGE ’25,  Africa’s Premier Trade Banking Thought Impact Event.

He noted that ultimately, the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme was not just about reserve accumulation but also about unlocking the potential of the country’s commodity base.

Providing an update on the performance of the Programme (DGPP) as of the end of June 2025, Dr. Zakari Mumuni said the central bank had purchased 145.95 tonnes of gold.

Out of this, 86.77 tonnes were sold for foreign exchange to support reserves, while the Bank’s physical gold holdings increased to 32.99 tonnes from 8.74 tonnes at the start of the programme.

“On all counts, the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP) has impacted positively, with strong reserve accumulation, stability in the exchange rate, and easing inflation.

“These have helped to improve the country’s credit profile from restrictive default to B- with a stable outlook in June 2025, boosting investor confidence,” Dr. Zakari Mumuni remarked.

National Democratic Congress Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia has welcomed the opposition New Patriotic Party’s decision not to contest the Tamale Central by-election following the death of MP Alhaji Dr. Murtala Mohammed.

Speaking at Mohammed’s final funeral rites in Tamale on Tuesday, Nketia called for unity and respect during the mourning period.

“We thank our NPP brothers for not contesting Tamale Central,” he stated, urging NDC members to avoid rushing candidate selection. “Let’s stay calm and not disrupt our fallen heroes’ funeral rites.” Nketia confirmed the party would later meet to choose Mohammed’s replacement.

The late MP died in the August 6 helicopter crash alongside seven others, including National Security Deputy Director Alhaji Lumina Muniru. Mohammed was buried in Accra on August 10. A government delegation including Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak and Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu attended Tuesday’s ceremony, reflecting the incident’s national impact.

Wontumi TV apologises to Mahama, NDC over unfounded helicopter crash claims

Wontumi TV, owned by Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has issued an unreserved apology to President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the public over allegations made by one of its presenters linking the President to the recent fatal military helicopter crash.

The remarks, made by presenter Akyemkwaa Nana Kofi Asare during a broadcast on Saturday, August 9 suggested, without evidence, that the President had a role in the tragedy, which claimed eight lives, including the Defence and Environment Ministers.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 12, Wontumi TV described the comments as “inappropriate, unfounded, and contrary to our values of professionalism, accuracy, and fairness in broadcasting.” The station emphasised that the claims did not reflect its views, policies, or editorial stance.

“As a responsible media house, we deeply regret the distress and reputational harm this may have caused to the President, the NDC, and the affected families,” the statement noted, adding that disciplinary measures will be taken against the presenter. Management further said editorial guidelines had been reinforced to ensure on-air content is based solely on verified facts and credible information.

The apology comes amid heightened scrutiny of Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited, after the National Communications Authority (NCA) suspended three of its radio stations, 95.9 FM in Accra, 101.3 FM in Kumasi, and 101.3 FM in Takoradi, over regulatory breaches. These included the unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and operating from unapproved transmitter sites.

The NCA’s move followed the expiration of a 30-day grace period granted by President Mahama for defaulting stations to rectify violations.

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has assured the public of a stable power supply despite an anticipated shortfall in gas due to scheduled maintenance.

This follows an earlier announcement from the ministry on Monday, August 11, 2025, approving a planned shutdown of the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant for maintenance from August 16 to August 30, 2025.

Speaking on the AM Show on Joy News on August 12, 2025, as monitored by GhanaWeb Business, the ministry’s spokesperson, Richmond Rockson, said Ghana is expected to lose about 95 million standard cubic feet of gas per day during the shutdown.

He emphasised that alternative measures have been put in place to sustain power generation throughout the period.

NCA enforces suspension of Wontumi FM, 8 others after 30-day ultimatum

“Plans have been put in place to ensure that alternative wells are made available. We are going to lose 95 million standard cubic feet of gas a day because of the shutdown, but we’ve made Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) available, we’ve made Light Crude Oil (LCO) available, and we’ve made diesel available for other thermal plants to produce power to make up for the deficit,” Rockson stated.

He also highlighted recent efforts by E&I to boost gas supply capacity from 240 million to 270 million standard cubic feet per day.

“About three or four weeks ago, E&I undertook an upgrade that increased gas supply from 240 million standard cubic feet to 270 million standard cubic feet. This time, we are losing 95 million standard cubic feet, about 40% of what we lost that day. But even then, we didn’t have any electricity outages,” he noted.

Ghana Stock Exchange Holds Steady After Historic July Surge

Ghana’s investment market

Ghana’s equities market paused for breath on Tuesday, with key indices unchanged after a record-breaking July that saw the GSE Composite Index soar 11.9%.

The benchmark held at 7,411.94 points a high watermark following last month’s rally while trading volume reached 8.7 million shares valued at GH¢34.6 million.

MTN Ghana dominated proceedings, accounting for 85% of the day’s turnover with shares steady at GH¢3.95. Only eight stocks saw activity, including Standard Chartered Bank (GH¢28) and TotalEnergies (GH¢31.93), both flat.

The stagnation contrasts sharply with July’s explosive trading, which recorded a 1,013% monthly volume surge and GH¢1.73 billion in value.

Market analysts attribute the lull to profit-taking after July’s 43% year-to-date index gain. “Investors are consolidating positions following unprecedented momentum,” said Accra-based financial advisor Ama Serwah.

The fixed income market also went quiet Tuesday, despite July’s 81.6% spike in government bond trading.

Attention now turns to Bayport Savings and Loans’ August 21 investor briefing, seen as a potential catalyst. Meanwhile, the exchange’s internship program continues training future market talent.

Shatta Movement’s public relations officer, Sammy Flex, has disclosed that Ghanaian dancehall musician Shatta Wale has lost a $2 million distribution deal for his latest project, the “Voice of the Crown” EP.

In a post on his Facebook page, Sammy Flex blamed the loss on negative online reports surrounding the musician, saying they were affecting business operations within their camp.

He, however, encouraged his team to remain positive, expressing hope that the project would still succeed despite the setback.

BoG to leverage commodities for strong reserve buffers – First Deputy Governor

0

Dr Zakari Mumuni, First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana Dr Zakari Mumuni, First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) says it is fully committed to the global shift towards leveraging commodities to build strong reserve buffers.

To this end, it said it looked forward to working with various partners to maximise all potential benefits from them.

“The global economy has entered a new era, where commodities are not just exported but strategically leveraged to build resilience, unlock liquidity, and drive inclusive growth,” the First Deputy Governor of the BoG, Dr Zakari Mumuni, stated.

He was speaking at CNVERGE ’25 – Africa’s Premier Trade Banking Thought Impact Event – in London last Wednesday, on the topic “Leveraging Commodities – The Central Bank’s View.”

Dr Mumuni noted that in the past, policy perspectives on commodities were often downplayed.

However, he said that in today’s uncertain and volatile global environment, commodities had gained significant policy attention and now occupied a central position in finance, trade, and national development.

“Commodities are emerging as alternative policy tools for portfolio diversification, levers for economic growth, and instruments of geopolitical influence,” he stressed.

He explained that, like many countries, Ghana’s economy was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia–Ukraine conflict, which exacerbated fiscal and debt vulnerabilities.

That, Dr Mumuni said, led to sovereign credit downgrades, loss of access to international capital markets, dwindling reserves, sharp currency depreciation, and high inflation.

“Faced with this economic crisis, the Bank of Ghana and the government recognised the need to rethink foreign exchange reserve strategies, not just to restore macroeconomic stability but also to build resilience against perennial shocks,” he said.

Dr Mumuni said the BoG’s response was the launch of the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP) in June 2021. The initiative aimed to double the country’s gold reserves within five years, diversify foreign exchange holdings, leverage gold to raise cheaper short-term financing, and boost confidence through stronger reserves.

“This programme was not just about reserve accumulation but also about unlocking the potential of the country’s commodity base,” Dr Mumuni noted.

The First Deputy Governor said that by the end of June 2025, the central bank had purchased 145.95 tonnes of gold, sold 86.77 tonnes for foreign exchange, increased physical holdings from 8.74 tonnes to 32.99 tonnes, and utilised 27.63 tonnes to settle 1.95 million metric tonnes of petroleum products under the Gold for Oil (G4O) initiative.

Abuakwa South MP urges renewed galamsey fight after passing of Defence Minister, others – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Member of Parliament for Akim Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has called for a renewed sense of urgency and national awakening to combat illegal mining activities, known locally as galamsey.

This call follows the tragic death of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and seven others in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, while en route to Obuasi to attend a galamsey-related program.

In a strongly worded message, Dr. Agyemang stated:

“If these gallant men were on their way to confront the scourge of illegal mining, then the fight against galamsey must now assume the same urgency with which we respond.”

He further emphasized that beyond the outpouring of tributes to mourn the victims, their tragic deaths must serve as a national awakening.

“This painful moment reminds us of the quiet risks borne each day by those who serve our country.
Their sacrifice, though often unseen, is real—and in this instance, ultimate.”

Dr. Agyemang added: “We owe them more than tributes; we owe them commitment and action.”

He noted that the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, was his senior during their time at Pope John Senior High School.

He prayed for his soul and those of all who perished in the crash, expressing hope that their sacrifices would not be in vain.

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah was one of the victims who lost their lives in the tragic crash of the Z9 helicopter, which belonged to the Ghana Armed Forces.

The crash also claimed the life of the Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

Other victims included: Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, NDC Vice Chair, Samuel Sarpong, Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East.

The helicopter’s crew members were: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Malin Twum-Ampadu and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The helicopter crashed on August 6, 2025, while en route to Obuasi to attend a program related to illegal mining activities, as part of government efforts to end galamsey.

Hundreds gather for final rites of late Minister Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala

The final Islamic funeral rites for the former Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala, have been performed in Tamale today, drawing hundreds of mourners and sympathisers from across the country.

Among the dignitaries present at the funeral, otherwise known as the “Third Day Adua,” were the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah; Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah; Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu; Northern Regional Minister, Adolf Ali John; Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, Alhassan Suhuyini; Former Minister for Finance, Mohammed Amin Adam; Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor; and Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak.

The solemn occasion, which marked the “Third Day Adua” in accordance with Islamic tradition, was a moment of reflection, prayer and celebration of the life of the late statesman, who lost his life in a tragic helicopter crash last week.

From the early hours of the morning, the family residence of the late minister at Changli and the surrounding streets were filled with relatives, political allies, friends and residents who came to pay their last respects.

The atmosphere was heavy with grief but also imbued with a deep sense of honour for the legacy Dr Murtala left behind.

It was also filled with the recitation of Qur’anic verses, as clerics led prayers for Allah’s mercy upon the soul of the departed.

Political leaders, traditional rulers and the public stood side by side, putting aside all differences to pray for the deceased, who was the MP for Tamale Central Constituency.

Incident

The remains of Dr Murtala, who was among the eight patriots who lost their lives in last week’s helicopter crash, were laid to rest at the Military Cemetery, La, in Accra on Sunday.

The Ghana Air Force Z9 helicopter, which departed Accra at 0912 hours en route to Obuasi, lost radar contact shortly after take-off, according to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

Other victims of the crash included Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister of Food and Agriculture; Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress; and Mr Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate.

Also on board were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Amaning Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Honour

In brief remarks, the National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, described the late minister as “a fantastic all-round intellectual in both letters and religion” whom the party was proud to have been associated with.

He, however, urged party members to remain calm and desist from rushing to choose his successor, as such a move could dishonour the late minister’s legacy.

“Whoever emerges as his replacement should know they have a lot of work ahead. Let us not rush or fight among ourselves, because in doing so, we may end up dishonouring his memory,” he stressed.

Mr Nketiah also admonished whoever succeeds him to continue supporting the students he had been sponsoring, reaffirming the party’s commitment to sustain his good works.

Sponsorship

For his part, Mr Iddrisu pledged to take over the sponsorship of 47 medical students the late minister had been supporting in various universities.

“We will not abandon the 47 medical students he was sponsoring. I promise to take care of all of them and fulfil their dreams of becoming medical doctors,” he said, adding that Dr Murtala left many unfinished projects that he would ensure were completed.

Mr Iddrisu described the late minister as a unifier who worked to bring northern MPs together to promote development in the northern sector.

He also thanked the family for accepting the government’s proposal to give the late MP a befitting burial in the national capital.

Gratitude

On behalf of the family, a brother of the deceased, Ibrahim Jabir, expressed deep gratitude to the government, political leaders, traditional authorities and all sympathisers for their support during this difficult period.

He said the family believed the love and honour shown to Dr Murtala would please his Maker.

Ghana Banks Promise Cheaper Loans as Benchmark Rate Tumbles

0

Banks
Banks

Ghana’s banks have pledged to lower lending rates for businesses and households following a sharp drop in the Ghana Reference Rate (GRR), now at a two-year low of 19.67%.

The August rate fell dramatically from January’s 29.72%, reflecting the Bank of Ghana’s monetary easing and improved economic stability.

John Awuah, CEO of the Ghana Association of Banks (GAB), confirmed the shift on August 11, stating borrowers with GRR-linked loans “should see the full weight of that reduction.” His remarks followed a wreath-laying ceremony at Jubilee House honoring victims of a recent military helicopter crash.

The GRR’s 10-percentage-point plunge this year signals easing inflation, stronger liquidity, and growing confidence a stark contrast to 2024’s stubbornly high rates.

The Bank of Ghana’s July decision to cut its policy rate from 28% to 25% anchors this shift. Awuah emphasized banks would pass on savings to customers, potentially easing pressure on businesses stifled by costly credit. Analysts welcome the move but note transmission speed will vary by institution, depending on individual risk assessments and pricing policies.

Macroeconomic improvements including anchored inflation expectations and bolstered reserves enable this relief. Could cheaper loans finally unlock investment and spur consumer spending? While challenges remain, the financial sector appears poised to fuel recovery.

Bubu Gowns Stylish Women Can Rock To Parties

0

Bubu gowns have carved a niche in contemporary fashion, especially for women who desire to blend comfort with sophistication. Known for their loose and flowing structure, bubu gowns offer an effortlessly chic appearance that suits a wide range of body shapes. These gowns are not only comfortable but also highly adaptable, making them a top choice for events ranging from casual gatherings to elegant parties.

One of the standout features of bubu gowns is their relaxed yet graceful silhouette. This unique shape allows for easy movement and exudes a refined charm without being overly formal. Depending on the design and fabric, a bubu gown can be styled to suit various moods and settings. For instance, pairing a plain bubu gown with bold accessories and high heels can instantly create a sophisticated evening look. On the other hand, a vibrant, patterned bubu worn with flat sandals or sneakers delivers a more laid-back, trendy vibe perfect for daytime occasions.

When choosing a bubu gown for a special event, fabric selection plays a crucial role. Luxurious materials such as satin, velvet, brocade, or silk add a rich texture and elevate the overall look. For added flair, gowns with embellishments like embroidery, sequins, or decorative beads can enhance your outfit and reflect your unique style.

Consider the event’s theme and dress code when selecting your gown. For formal occasions, long, floor-grazing bubu gowns with subtle designs exude elegance. For informal or semi-casual parties, a shorter version in bold colors or playful prints is both fun and fashionable.

Bubu gowns are a timeless addition to any wardrobe. Their comfort, versatility, and grace make them a go-to option for women who want to express their style confidently while feeling at ease in every setting.

Private school fees reflect market realities – EduWatch – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, has justified the fees charged by private schools, stating they reflect market realities rather than an attempt to exploit parents.

His comments follow growing concerns from parents about the pricing structures of many private institutions, with some questioning the fairness of the charges.

Currently, public schools receive a capitation grant of GH¢15.00 per student for the entire academic year, alongside a daily food allocation of GH¢2.00. In contrast, spending per student in private schools is significantly higher.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, Mr. Asare argued that it is unrealistic to compare the operations of private schools with those of public schools given the government’s per-child allocation.

“Private schools, on a regular basis, are not cheating parents. Their pricing reflects market realities. For example, a square meal a day, or a rice meal, costs about GH¢15.00. If you are paying GH¢2.00, you will not be served the same meal in a public school,” he explained.

He also questioned the sustainability of the current school feeding programme, noting that the per-head daily allocation—raised from GH¢1.20 to GH¢1.50, and then to GH¢2.00 in the 2025 mid-year budget—remains grossly inadequate.

“Even in rural areas, you do not get eggs for GH¢2.00, so how are you supposed to provide a balanced meal with carbohydrates and protein for GH¢2.00?” he asked.

Mr. Asare called on the government to review the programme, stressing that it was originally intended to promote community involvement rather than operate solely as a procurement-driven initiative.

“It was meant for communities to feed their children with food from their farms, supplemented by what the government provides. But we have turned the community participation element into a procurement activity, and now GH¢2.00 is being used to buy food instead,” he said.

The person who made that indecent video should face the law - Comedian Bovi makes U-turn; calls for release of Ibom Air female passenger

Nigerian comedian and actor, Bovi Ugboma has said that the Ibom Air staff who released part of the video showing alleged unruly passenger, Comfort Emmanson, in a state of indecent exposure should be made to face the law.

Bovi stated this in an Instagram story post on Tuesday, a day after he said Ms Emmanson should not only face legal consequences but also recommended a mental health treatment for her, describing her action as a manic episode.

Bovi however, said he has since taken down his previous statement after viewing the video posted on social media without censoring of the passenger’s exposed body.

Adjusting his previous stance on the incident, he called for the release of Ms Emmanson, adding that a civilian detaining someone like the air hostess did, can be a trigger for some people.

“The person who made that video without censoring the lady’s exposed body should be made to face the law as well. Lastly, I don’t know the laws but if an air hostess doesn’t have the right to detain a passenger, then that girl should be released immediately,” he wrote.

“That singular act of being detained by a fellow citizen is enough to trigger most people. Again, if it’s not a lawful action, this issue should be thrown away already.”

Useless questions! – LilWin fires Emelia Brobbey over Sandra Ababio interview

LilWin accussed Emelia Brobbery of trying undermine his reputation LilWin accussed Emelia Brobbery of trying undermine his reputation

Ghanaian actor and filmmaker LilWin has publicly criticised fellow actress Emelia Brobbey following a recent episode of her talk show, Okukuseku, which featured actress Sandra Ababio.

The discussion, which explored Sandra’s career journey and her professional relationship with LilWin, included some questions that the actor did not take kindly to.

In a TikTok Live session, LilWin accused Emelia of disrespect and hypocrisy, expressing frustration over what he described as “useless questions” about his relationship with Sandra, particularly one asking whether she regretted their professional association.

“You are sitting there talking down on me, asking useless questions about us. Trying to spoil my name. You’re a pretender!” he fumed.

I have no regret getting to know LilWin’ – Sandra Ababio

He also recounted an incident from years ago, claiming he had to intervene during a standoff between Emelia and Sandra on a movie set.

“The first time I was on set with both of them, Sandra was new in the movie industry. She was in the changing room, and Emelia came in and asked her to get out. Sandra insulted her in response.

“I had to calm Sandra down and told her that there are seniors in the industry, so she should be calm,” he said.

LilWin further reminded Emelia of past criticisms she had made about his career.

“When I started acting, you mocked me. Now you’re talking about my business?” he said.

Highlighting his dedication to his craft, LilWin noted his recent efforts to promote his upcoming film.

“I am travelling across the country. I’ve been in Sunyani, paying for things, trying to push this movie. Yet, you people will not see that one,” he added.

Meanwhile, Sandra Ababio’s appearance on Okukuseku painted a largely positive picture of her relationship with LilWin. She credited him for mentoring her in both acting and real estate, and stated that she would “choose the same journey again” if given the chance.

Her remarks stand in contrast to the controversy stirred by Emelia’s line of questioning, which LilWin interpreted as an attempt to undermine his reputation.

Cocoa farmers in Ashanti Region fell trees in protest over insufficient price hike

Some cocoa farmers in the Ashanti Region say they are frustrated by the insufficient price increment Some cocoa farmers in the Ashanti Region say they are frustrated by the insufficient price increment

Some cocoa farmers in parts of the Ashanti Region have taken drastic measures in response to their dissatisfaction with the recent cocoa price adjustment.

Frustrated by what they describe as an insufficient increment, the farmers have begun cutting down their cocoa trees to make way for rice farms.

Farmers at Prabon, in the Afigya Kwabre North District, one of the region’s cocoa-producing communities, say they are abandoning cocoa farming for more profitable ventures.

According to them, the new price of GH¢3,228.75 per bag of cocoa, which includes an increment of GH¢128.75, is not enough to sustain their livelihoods.

They allege that President John Dramani Mahama had promised during his campaign to raise the price to GH¢6,000 per bag, and the current figure falls far short of that commitment.

Speaking to Angel OTEC News reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng on Monday, August 11, 2025, the farmers said rice, maize, and cassava farming are now more lucrative than cocoa.

They warned that unless the government reviews the price upward, they will continue abandoning cocoa farms in favour of more profitable crops.

The farmers’ actions have sparked concerns about the future of cocoa production in the region and the potential economic implications for the country.

As the situation develops, it remains to be seen whether the government will revisit the cocoa price to address their concerns.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced an improved financial package for Ghanaian referees for the 2025/2026 season.

According to the GFA, FIFA-accredited Ghanaian referees will now receive GH¢2,500 for each Ghana Premier League (GPL) game they officiate. Non-FIFA referees will be paid GH¢2,000 per game, while referees in the Division One League (DoL) and Women’s Premier League (WPL) will each receive GH¢1,000 per match.

Speaking at the 31st Ordinary Session of Congress on August 12, 2025, GFA President Kurt Okraku said the reviewed conditions demonstrate his administration’s commitment to improving the standards of local football.

“I Will Leverage Tarkwa’s Potential’ – Duker Eyes Presidency, Faces Resistance from Party Rivals

0

Former Member of Parliament for Tarkwa Nsuaem, George Mireku Duker, has responded to critics who question his presidential ambitions, asserting that he is just as capable of leading Ghana as any of the country’s previous presidents as per reports from MyNewsGH.

Duker, who served as a Deputy Minister in the Akufo-Addo administration, challenged skeptics, saying, “If John Mahama, Akufo-Addo, Rawlings, and Mills could be Presidents, why can’t I?”

He pointed to his long-held presidential aspirations and the resistance he faces within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as indications of his growing influence.

In a conversation with supporters, Duker made it clear that he is “a strong contender for the presidency” and fully prepared to lead.

He expressed frustration with what he views as attempts to undermine his potential, attributing much of the pushback to his political rivals who see him as a threat. “There are people who see me as a threat because they know what I am capable of,” he said.

Duker also emphasized his roots in Tarkwa, a region not traditionally known for abundant natural resources. He argued that harnessing Tarkwa’s potential could give him a significant advantage in the race.

“If I can leverage Tarkwa’s potential, I will be a formidable candidate,” he stated.

Despite these challenges, Duker remains determined to press forward with his political ambitions.

His resolve, he says, has only grown stronger.

The proposal to extend the term limit of presidents of the Ghana Football Association from two to three has been accepted at the 31st Ordinary Congress of the GFA.

The proposal, according to multiple media reports, received massive endorsements from members who were present at the 31st Ordinary Congress of the GFA on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at the Ghanaman Centre of Excellence at Prampram.

Mali soldiers arrested over coup allegations: What we know

0

Tensions are high in Mali’s capital, Bamako, after the arrests of dozens of soldiers in recent days, including two high-ranking generals. Although shops and offices stayed open on Tuesday, residents, including one journalist, told Al Jazeera the atmosphere there is uneasy.

Mali’s military government has so far remained silent about the spate of arrests. However, unofficial reports said the soldiers are being detained for their alleged involvement in a coup plot that aimed to overthrow General Assimi Goita’s government.

The landlocked West African country, located in the semiarid Sahel region, is embroiled in a myriad of political and security crises. The recent arrests, analysts said, mark the first time the military is cracking down on soldiers within its ranks on suspicion of a coup.

Here’s what you need to know about the arrests:

Who was arrested and why?

Conflicting reports have emerged since the arrests over the weekend and on Monday.

Reports by the French news channel RFI put the number of arrested soldiers at at least 50 while the Reuters news agency reported 36 to 40 soldiers have been detained.

Two generals are reportedly among them.

Abass Dembele, a former military governor of the northern region of Mopti, was arrested on Sunday morning in his home in Kati, a garrison town just outside Bamako, according to RFI.

Dembele is popular among Malian soldiers and has a reputation as an officer who often leads from the front. He was active in the northern war of 2012, a civil war that broke out after Tuareg separatists parlayed with armed groups to seize more than 60 percent of the country. The failure of the Malian army to push the rebels back prompted France to deploy thousands of soldiers.

Air force General Nema Sagara is another top official believed to be detained. Sagara is one of the few high-ranking female military officials in Mali and throughout the region. She is also one of the few female Malian officers to have been drafted into battle when she fought in the civil war of 2013.

Al Jazeera, however, could not independently confirm the veracity of the reports.

What is happening in Mali?

Since 2012, Mali’s army has battled a swarm of armed groups in the north, including Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the ISIL (ISIS) affiliate in the greater Sahara (ISGS).

The fighting has resulted in thousands of deaths while up to 350,000 people are currently displaced, according to Human Rights Watch. Several northern towns in rebel-held territory are under siege by the armed groups, limiting food, fuel and medical supplies. The groups operate in the Mali-Burkina Faso-Niger border area.

Promising to end the violence, then-Colonel Goita, 41, took power in two successive coups in 2020 and 2021. He was sworn in as transitional president in June 2021. Under his control, the country severed ties with its former coloniser, France, and thousands of French soldiers involved in the fight against the armed groups exited the country.

The military rulers have since turned to Russian private mercenaries and military officials under the Wagner Group and Africa Corps. The army and the Russians have recorded wins but also heavy losses.

What has the military government said?

The military government has not put out an official statement stating the reasons for the arrests.

RFI quoted an unnamed Malian senior military officer close to the government as saying the soldiers were arrested because “they wanted to destabilise the transition,” referring to the military government, which calls itself a transitional government that is expected eventually to hand over power to a civilian administration.

Many of those arrested were confirmed by RFI to be members of the national guard. The special unit is headed by the Defence Minister and General Sadio Camara. In elite military circles in Bamako, Camara is increasingly seen as a rival to Goita, although they were both part of the team of coup leaders who seized power. The rifts inside the military come as some of Goita’s policies have begun to irk many, both in the military and among civilians.

This week’s arrests, some critics said, are the strongest sign yet that the military’s control is weakening from the inside. While Goita is the head of state, he appears not to have complete control over the armed forces, analysts said.

Due to the reported cracks, the military government will want to project a strong image, hence its silence, Beverly Ochieng, a Sahel analyst with the intelligence firm Control Risks, told Al Jazeera.

“[These arrests] indicate some pronounced divisions,” Ochieng said. “Quite a few red lines have been crossed in recent months, and people are bound to be tired. It is likely that the military leadership will maintain and project a united front to downplay vulnerabilities and internal rivalries.”

Is there a crackdown on dissent?

Critics said Goita’s recent policies appear to attack dissenters and aim to shrink the civic space in the troubled country.

Goita’s government, for example, approved a bill in July that would allow him to seek a five-year presidential mandate, renewable “as many times as necessary” and without requiring an election. Earlier, when it seized power, the military promised to hand over power to civilians in 2024.

In May, the military government dissolved political parties and organisations and banned political meetings, drawing condemnation from opposition politicians and rights groups.

In addition, the military government has targeted outspoken critics. This month, former Prime Minister Moussa Mara was arrested and charged with “undermining the credibility of the state” after he visited political prisoners and posted about seeking justice for them.

“As long as the night lasts, the sun will obviously appear!” Mara had written on July 4 in a social media post, adding: “We will fight by all means for this to happen as soon as possible!”

Choguel Maiga, who was the prime minister until his ouster in November, has also accused Goita’s government of targeting him. Although Maiga was once a champion of the government, he became critical of Goita this year. In July, the government accused him of fraud and embezzlement during his time in office and launched an investigation.

What else is fuelling anger in the country?

Alongside the political situation, a lack of security remains rife in the country, causing frustration among many Malians.

Several armed groups continue to operate in the north, including JNIM. Human Rights Watch (HRW) blames the military forces and their Russian counterparts for targeting civilians indiscriminately on the assumption that they work with armed groups. At least 12 men from the Fulani ethnic group appear to have been executed and 81 forcibly disappeared since January, HRW said in a report.

Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, which are also military-led, banded together to form the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) this year after they withdrew from the Economic Community of West African States. They also created a 5,000-strong force for joint military operations to try to drive out armed groups.

Separately, the Malian army is once again battling Tuareg separatists. Although there were peace agreements made after the 2012 war that allowed the northern region of Kidal to maintain a semiautonomous nature, the military government under Goita has torn up the peace deals and returned to fighting, forcing hundreds of people to flee across the border to Mauritania.

In late July, Malian forces said they killed 70 “terrorists” in a raid in the north without specifying if those killed were with an armed group or were separatists.

In July, the transitional parliament approved a five-year renewable mandate, clearing the way for Goita to lead Mali until at least 2030

Cute Senator Outfits For Fashionable Guys

Today’s fashion-forward man can effortlessly embrace this classic ensemble while infusing it with his own sense of style. The senator outfit, known for its clean lines and structured silhouette, is now a wardrobe staple that balances cultural pride with modern sophistication.

The foundation of any great senator look begins with well-tailored trousers. Fit is everything—opt for a slim or tapered cut that flatters your shape and adds a contemporary edge. Three Wontumi radio stations, Six others suspended – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has ordered the suspension of three radio stations under the Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited, owned by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, for breaches of broadcasting regulations.

The affected stations — 95.9 FM in Accra, 101.3 FM in Kumasi, and 101.3 FM in Takoradi — were cited for failing to address regulatory breaches, including the unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and operating from unapproved transmitter locations.

The move follows the expiration of a 30-day grace period granted by President John Dramani Mahama to allow defaulting stations to rectify violations.

The NCA said Wontumi Multimedia failed to fully comply within the amnesty window, resulting in the suspensions.

The enforcement action was carried out under Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991), which prohibits operating without a valid Certificate of Compliance.

Six other radio stations across the country were also shut down after refusing or neglecting to take corrective measures during the grace period.

The NCA stressed that it will continue to monitor the broadcasting sector to ensure compliance with licensing conditions and the laws governing FM radio in Ghana.

Education Minister wishes WASSCE candidates well

0

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has sent a word of encouragement on behalf of President John Mahama to all candidates writing this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

“I wish to also encourage them to see this exam as an important milestone in the building of their character and career, and more importantly, their academic progression,” he said.

Mr Iddrisu stated that at a meeting with officials from the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to obtain first-hand information on their preparedness for the conduct of the WASSCE.

Those present at the meeting included the Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Education, Prof George K.T. Oduro; the Chief Director of the ministry, Maamele Adrews; the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Prof Ernest Kofi Davis, and the Head of National Office of the WAEC, Dr Rosemond Wilson.

Conflict-prone areas

Mr Iddrisu commended the GES and WAEC for the work they were doing with the security agencies to ensure that no student was left behind, even those in conflict-prone areas, or who might be victims of some circumstances of instability or the lack of peace or conflict in that particular area.

“Our schoolchildren, both in Bawku and Nalerigu in the Upper East Region, deserve the same right to quality education and opportunity as every Ghanaian child.

“So, the assurance to the Ghanaian public is that the government will provide adequate security to protect all those engaged and who will be partaking in the examinations across the country,” Mr Iddrisu said.

“I am also told that in the Oti Region, we probably will have to provide some additional logistical support to get some students, who ordinarily would be day students, but we are converting them momentarily into boarding students,” Mr Iddrisu said.

The minister said about 400 candidates in the Oti Region were equally caught up in a conflict environment in the region, and said the Ministry of Education would support with adequate logistics to be able to deal with that.

He gave the assurance that the government would resource WAEC adequately, “because we want you to prepare early in advance so that we get this important exercise going.

They can’t afford to miss this opportunity because assessment is integral to the building of their character and their future”.

National Education Review Committee

Mr Iddrisu hinted that the ministry would share with stakeholders a blueprint and a roadmap for implementing the recommendations of the National Education Review Committee.

“It is my understanding and expectation that there will be a National Education Review Implementation Secretariat, which will cost the recommendations,” he added.

He said as part of the recommendation, there would probably be a national debate on the future of secondary education as to how much the state was investing in secondary education.

“In particular, given meaning to the constitutional provision of free, compulsory, universal basic education, it is my honest belief that we should invest more in foundational learning than any other area in our educational provision if we are to be successful.

“While emphasising science, mathematics and engineering education for the future, we must be seen supporting you in looking at the capacity and training of your teachers,” the minister tasked the Director-General of the GES.

Hamidu Abdul Fatawu

GHANAIAN DEFENDER Hamidu Abdul Fatawu has completed a move to Algerian Ligue 1 newcomers MB Rouissat on a free transfer following his departure from Egyptian side Ghazl El Mahalla.

According to a Ghanasoccernet report, the 26-year-old left-back ended his stint with El Mahalla at the conclusion of the 2024-25 campaign, having featured in 22 matches across all competitions.

His solid defensive displays and ability to contribute in attack made him a key figure during his one-year stay in the Egyptian Premier League.

Abdul Fatawu initially joined El Mahalla in July 2024 after catching the eye with Medeama SC during their CAF Champions League campaign.

His performances at the continental level highlighted his pace, positional awareness, and composure under pressure, earning him a move abroad.

Later that year, the former Medeama star was rewarded with his Ghana senior national team debut, putting in a strong display in the Black Stars’ 3-1 victory over Liberia.

That performance cemented his reputation as one of Ghana’s reliable options on the left side of defence.

At Rouissat, Abdul Fatawu will bring top-flight and international experience to a team aiming to make an impact in their maiden Algerian Ligue 1 season.

His versatility, and work rate are expected to play a pivotal role as the club navigates the challenges of elite competition.

True peace is built quietly, not through public condemnation – Alex Nartey

Quiet diplomacy, not public shaming, is the most effective way to reform behaviour and preserve Ghana’s democratic stability, according to private legal practitioner and ADR expert, Esq. Alex Nartey.

Speaking at the opening of a three-day Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) training for members of the Volta and Oti Regional Peace Councils, Esq. Nartey challenged the popular perception that the Peace Council’s silence in public debates means inaction.

Instead, he said, it reflects a deliberate strategy to resolve issues respectfully and sustainably.

“When people go too far in political discourse, the Peace Council doesn’t rush to condemn them publicly. We invite them for dialogue, reason with them, and help them reflect on the consequences of their actions,” he explained.

“Responsible individuals often realise they could have done better — and they change. That is lasting reform.”

He cautioned that democracy thrives when all political actors, regardless of size, can freely contribute to the national conversation without suppression or intimidation.

“Partisan politics is healthy for democracy, but undermining other parties is not. Ghana needs more vibrant political voices — beyond the NDC and NPP — to enrich public debate and governance,” he said.

Esq. Nartey stressed that the Peace Council’s main empowerment needs are adequate logistics and highly skilled mediators capable of applying interest-based approaches to resolve crises.

He added that working quietly behind the scenes often achieves more than making public pronouncements that could harden divisions.

The GIZ-supported workshop is designed to build members’ capacity in ADR processes, enabling them to handle disputes in ways that maintain relationships and promote unity.

Day one of the training covered:

The legislative framework governing the Peace Council

The Council’s role as a neutral third party in conflicts

Guidelines on hate speech and other indecent expressions

Theories and principles of conflict

Participants expressed enthusiasm about the programme, promising to apply the lessons learned to foster peaceful dialogue and conflict resolution in their communities.

The training continues with hands-on mediation simulations and advanced techniques aimed at deepening the Councils’ capacity to defuse tensions and build lasting peace across the two regions.

A lot of Nigerian artistes fund careers through internet fraud – M.I Abaga

M.I Abaga is a veteran Nigerian rapper M.I Abaga is a veteran Nigerian rapper

Money keeps the music playing, but according to veteran Nigerian rapper, M.I Abaga, much of the cash pushing Nigeria’s entertainment industry comes from internet fraud.

Speaking on the ‘So Nigerian Podcast’, M.I explained that this is a worrying reality and a sign that something is wrong with how the creative industry is supported in Nigeria.

He said the situation is made worse by the fact that a lot of additional funding comes from outside the country rather than from within.

The rapper noted that Nigeria must improve funding for its creative sector in order for artistes can rely on legitimate and sustainable sources of income, rather than depending on questionable money, which he referred to as the “other industry.”

“There’s a lot of controversy when people come talking about like Yahoo Yahoo because a lot of artistes, that’s the funding that they have, and it’s when people try to talk about it, to me…I don’t want to be misquoted here, I say the wrong thing.

“But what I’m trying to say is that it’s an indictment on our country that we have such talented musicians and that the major funding for the industry comes from the West and comes from this other industry. It’s an indictment. It shows that something is wrong, which leads us back to your question. Hopefully we can do better,” M.I said.

NCA suspends Wontumi FM, 8 others after 30-day grace period

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has suspended the operations of nine (9) radio stations in Ghana for various infractions.

This follows the expiration of the 30-day grace period granted by the President to the defaulting stations to rectify violations of the laws and regulations governing FM radio broadcasting in Ghana.

In a press statement on August 12, 2025, the NCA said, “Six (6) stations failed, refused, and neglected to comply with the regulatory amnesty by taking no action. Consequently, the operations of the following stations have been suspended.”

The Authority had earlier ordered the shutdown of 62 radio stations for failing to comply with broadcasting regulations. Shortly after, President John Dramani Mahama granted a 30-day grace period to the affected stations to comply.

However, the NCA said Donplus Multimedia Limited (105.9 FM) in Ho, Dreams Ghana Media Limited (104.9 FM) in New Abirem, Jam Multimedia Limited (101.3 FM) in Kintampo, Jewel Group Limited (102.7 FM) in Duayaw Nkwanta, Kpandai Star Community Radio (107.3 FM) in Kpandai, and Unique Gateway Communication Limited (105.7 FM) in Nkawkaw failed to comply.

It further noted that while many of the violating stations took steps to address breaches during the amnesty period, three (3) stations failed to resolve certain violations, including the unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and unapproved transmitter locations.

Consequently, the operations of the following stations have been suspended for operating without a Certificate of Compliance, in violation of Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991):

1. Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited 95.9 Accra

2. Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited 101.3 Kumasi

3. Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited 101.3 Takoradi

“The NCA will continue to monitor the broadcasting space to ensure compliance with the relevant authorisation conditions and the laws and regulations governing the operation of broadcasting services in Ghana,” the statement said.

I haven’t decided – Kurt Okraku speaks on possibility of running for a third term in office

Kurt Okraku has refused to rule out running for third term as GFA President Kurt Okraku has refused to rule out running for third term as GFA President

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku has said that he has not taken a decision to run for a third term amidst controversy on the issue.

According to him, he has two and a half years to serve as the President of the GFA and is focused on working hard to achieve more successes.

The former owner of Dreams FC urged Ghanaians to refrain from making his third term a topic of discussion which could affect the smooth running of football in Ghana.

Addressing the media during the 31st Ordinary Congress held on August 12, 2025, Okraku advised the public to support the GFA’s strategy in promoting football activities.

BREAKING: GFA Congress approves extension of presidential term limit to three terms

“We have at the moment almost two and a half years to serve the Ghanaian game and when it comes to that time, I will make a decision. Just like many other people who are eligible to make a decision and to contest. So this should not be a topic for us.

“What should be a topic is how we handle the new wave that is blowing around our domestic game. The high level of investment that the FA has worked to bring into reality and how well our clubs can respond to our current situation in our attempt to develop the Ghanaian game,” he said.

This comes after 114 out of the 124 members of Congress, which includes GFA president Kurt Okraku voted in favor of the motion to extend the term limit of the leader of the association from two to three.

Gifty Oware set to become GFA’s second Vice President following Congress approval

Six people voted against the motion to extend the term limits of the GFA president, stressing the fact that two terms of four years each is enough for one to implement his ideas to develop the game, while three members abstained from the vote.
