Teachers, parents applaud contestants’ dedication

0

Some teachers and parents of contestants in the 2025 Citi FM/Channel One TV Literacy Challenge have praised the commitment and determination of the Junior High School students competing in this year’s edition.

Speaking to Channel One TV at the British Council in Accra on Saturday, August 9, 2025, Abraham Ametepe, a supervisor from Southbridge Montessori School, said his school has made the competition a priority.

“In our school, we have a literacy club that focuses only on the competition. Every week, we meet to write essays, and then we assess them. We also go through the science practicals and test ourselves on general knowledge. Twice a term, we conduct quizzes to see who can qualify,” he explained.

From Wellspring School, teacher Millicent highlighted how enhanced preparation made a significant difference this year.

“We presented four learners this year. We tried last year, but we got the information late, so only one learner qualified for the top 50. This time, we prepared them well, and out of the 20 who attempted, four were picked,” she said.

Parents also expressed pride in the hard work of their wards. Gyamboe Atteh, whose daughter is participating for the second time, said the journey has been inspiring.

“I am a proud parent. This is our second time attempting. My daughter couldn’t make it to the top 10 last year, but I encouraged her to do more. This year, we hope she makes it. She has been doing extra classes aside from regular schoolwork and also engages in self-tuition,” he noted.

The 2025 Literacy Challenge aims to identify, test, and reward Ghana’s most outstanding Junior High School students through a series of competitive stages, with the ultimate winner taking home GH¢10,000 and a trophy.

The Literacy Challenge is powered by Citi FM, supported by Channel One TV, and proudly sponsored by BEL MOOO and GB Assessment.

Fire Service, GES working on fire safety syllabus for basic schools – Chief Fire Officer

0

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and Ulster University in Northern Ireland, are working on a fire safety syllabus for basic schools.

The Acting Chief Fire Officer (CFO), Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sapong, said the initiative is to help the children learn fire safety in school, grow up to understand the importance of being safe, and become ambassadors for safety in their homes and communities.

She said this at the Ghana National Fire Service’s National Safety Awards 2025, held at the Headquarters, where the Minister for Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, together with some service personnel, civilians, and corporate institutions, were honoured for their contributions towards fire safety promotion.

CFO Sapong said, “The fire safety syllabus will help shape the country for a safer future. I commend the team putting up the syllabus, but let us also remember to teach our children how to be safe. Let us take care in our homes, schools, and workplaces. Let us make safety a habit for everyone.”

She said the GNFS wore many hats as safety officers, teachers, rescuers, investigators, and partners in building a safer country; however, they could not do it alone and needed the public’s support and collaboration.

“We are asking corporate Ghana and individuals to support us, not just with words but with actions to build the capacity of our workforce to serve them better, get better equipment and logistics to reach more communities with the gospel of safety,” she said.

The Acting CFO said the National Safety Awards were about building a lasting culture where every Ghanaian, whether young or old, embraced safety as a way of life in homes, schools, workplaces, roads, farms, markets, and public spaces.

She said GNFS personnel had, through their hard work and dedication, issued out over 41,000 fire certificates, given out over 9000 fire permits and carried out 32,626 fire safety audits and inspections in the past two years.

They had also held over 33,000 public education sessions across the country and helped save over GH₵354 million worth of properties from fire ruins in the past two years.

In the first half of 2025, GNFS recorded 3,595 fire cases compared to 3,576 during the same period in 2024, a marginal increase of 0.53% and that the GNFS attributed to the rise in fire cases because people did not follow basic fire safety rules coupled with bad weather in the first quarter of 2025.

Project Lead for the National Safety Awards 2025, Joseph T. D. Narnor Jnr, said the awards were not given on any financial commitments but true recognition of those who demonstrated commitment to promoting fire safety.

He said they dreamed of a Ghana where every child knew “safety first” before they played, every community trained responders – not just in uniform but in heart and skill and a Ghana where safety would not be an afterthought but the foundation of how citizens lived, worked, and grew.

The Minister was honoured with a citation and plaque for his support of fire safety initiatives.

Other honourees included Chief Fire Officer (CFO) (Rtd) Julius Aalebkure Kuunor, Acting CFO Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sapong, DCFO (Rtd) Paa Kwasi Adu Twum, DCFO (Rtd) Tonny K Lawoe, DCFO (Rtd) Kwame Kwateng, DOI Michael Ato Korsah and GNA’s Chief Reporter, Samira Larbi. Corporate institutions were also recognised.

The family of the late Squadron Leader Peter Abaafeme Anala has suffered an unimaginable tragedy, losing three siblings in just five months.

The Squadron Leader was among the eight victims of the recent helicopter crash in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region, which claimed the lives of two ministers, three government officials, and three soldiers.

According to Graphic Online, the first loss came on March 31, 2025, when Grace Lena Anala passed away in Virginia, USA, where she was residing.

Her burial arrangements were overseen by her younger brother, Reverend Father Anthony Anala SVD, who served in Mississippi, USA.

He was laid to rest on June 24, 2025.

Just as the family hoped the cycle of grief had ended, Squadron Leader Peter Anala, the youngest of the siblings, tragically lost his life in the fatal helicopter crash.

The late Squadron Leader is scheduled to be buried on August 14, 2025, as part of the government’s plan to honour all the deceased in the incident.

No verified link between President’s travel and fatal Helicopter crash — Khalid

0

Economic Advisor at the Office of the Vice President, Dr. Sharif Khalid, has urged the public and commentators to avoid making unverified claims about last Wednesday’s deadly military helicopter crash, warning that speculation could fuel unnecessary rumours.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, August 9, Dr. Khalid stressed that in the absence of authoritative information, drawing links between the crash and the President’s travel arrangements is unhelpful and risks clouding the facts.

“We need to refrain if we cannot actively say that the helicopter that crashed is what the President was going to sit in. If we cannot authoritatively say that this is what it is, then making such comparisons only fills the air with rumour-mongering. When we have such high-profile issues and the discussion is this murky, it is not helpful,” he cautioned.

His comments come amid heightened public interest following the August 6 crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, which claimed the lives of several high-ranking government officials and military officers.

The victims include Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Muniru Mohammed; former parliamentary candidate, Samuel Aboagye; and NDC Vice Chairman, Samuel Sarpong.

Also among the dead were three Ghana Armed Forces personnel: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Preliminary information indicates that the Z-9 military helicopter was flying from Accra to Obuasi when it went off radar before crashing. The cause of the accident is yet to be established.

The Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) has called for a thorough independent investigation to determine the root cause of the incident and to implement measures to avert future tragedies.

A state funeral for the victims has been scheduled for Friday, August 15. Samples of their remains have been sent to South Africa for DNA analysis to aid identification ahead of burial.

According to the organisers, the decision was taken after extensive consultations with stakeholders and partners, in light of the recent military helicopter crash in the Adansi area that claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and six others.

UNDP’s training shaping conflict-sensitive reporting in Northern Ghana

Building Peace Through the Press: UNDP’s training shaping conflict-sensitive reporting inNorthern Ghana

Journalism cannot be treated as usual business, especially in regions where conflict is simmering just beneath the surface. In such environments, journalism must go beyond the simple reporting of facts.

It requires context, caution, and a deep sense of responsibility. This is the core of conflict-sensitive reporting, a model Ghanaian journalist must embrace without delay.

Having reported for nearly two decades on conflicts in volatile areas like Bawku with the Ghana News Agency and the Ghanaian Times, I understand the delicate balance between informing the public and unintentionally inflaming tensions.

In addition to working in academia, I remain dedicated to responsible journalism through my contributions to the Business and Financial Times.

This dedication was further deepened during the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) recent Fact-Checking and Conflict-Sensitive Reporting training workshop held in Tamale, in the Northern Region of Ghana.

Funded by the governments of Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, and Denmark, and organized under the UNDP’s Prevention Facility for the Gulf of Guinea initiative, the workshop brought together 25 journalists and bloggers from the Northern, Savannah, Upper East and Upper West Regions of Ghana.

These areas are particularly susceptible to extremist narratives, misinformation, and ethnic conflicts.

The capacity-building training was designed to equip media professionals with the tools needed to report responsibly in sensitive situations and to use their craft to promote

peace.

When headlines can harm or heal

One of the key lessons from the workshop was the immense power of headlines. It is crucial to emphasize that in today’s fast-paced media environment, many readers engage only with headlines, making editorial decisions more impactful than ever.

A headline devoid of context or sensitivity can deepen mistrust, fuel stereotypes, and even incite violence.

As a veteran journalist, I underscored the point during the training that the media can either be a conduit for peace or a conveyor belt for violence.

When reporting on conflict, it is critical for journalists, bloggers, and editors to ask themselves before publishing: Will this headline build peace or deepen division?

The importance of contextual knowledge

One of the facilitators, Eugene Yirbuor, emphasized that journalists must have a thorough understanding of conflict dynamics to report effectively without inflaming passions or exacerbating tensions.

He noted that stories risk oversimplifying issues and escalating conflicts when reporters lack insight into the historical antecedents, as well as the political, ethnic, and economic causes of conflict.

Yirbuor’s sessions on peace journalism and ethical storytelling challenged us as journaliststo look beyond surface events and highlight pathways to peace. In fragile environments, ethical reporting is not optional. It is an essential commodity.

Combating misinformation with facts

Roselena Ahiable, Project Manager at DUBAWA West Africa, highlighted the growing

threat of disinformation and misinformation, especially on social media.

She trained participants on fact-checking tools and verification strategies, crucial for maintaining media integrity in conflict-prone regions like Northern Ghana.

“In areas where literacy levels vary and online rumors spread quickly, traditional media remains a trusted source. Journalists have a vital role in verifying facts before they reach the public, preventing false narratives from sparking unrest,” she stressed.

As journalists and bloggers, it is especially important to adhere to these principles when reporting on conflict.

In an interview with one of the participants, Joshua Asah, the News editor of A1 Radio, he remarked that the training programme has been very impactful and indicated” I have learnt a lot and hope to put the knowledge acquired into practice to help change the narratives,”

Changing harmful narratives, promoting inclusion

Another important takeaway from the workshop was the realization that journalists must challenge harmful stereotypes, particularly those targeting minority groups like the Fulani.

Instead of portraying communities through a narrow lens of conflict, we can humanize and amplify stories of resilience and coexistence, thereby contributing to social cohesion.

A call to the media ecosystem

This workshop reinforced my belief and that of many colleagues that conflict-sensitive reporting must become standard practice in Ghanaian newsrooms.

Media houses should embed conflict-aware frameworks into their editorial policies. Journalists and bloggers need ongoing training in conflict dynamics, ethics, and misinformation.

Editors must evaluate stories not just for accuracy, but for their potential impact on peace.

With the current pockets of conflict across Ghana, amid rising regional insecurity, this training is more critical than ever.

Without deliberate action, the media risks becoming an un intentional amplifier of conflict, rather than a pillar of democracy and stability.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Ghanaian media has long championed democracy and accountability, but the stakes have never been higher.

We must move beyond traditional reporting models and embrace ethical, inclusive, and sensitive storytelling, especially in conflict-prone regions like Bawku and others across the country.

As I emphasized during the Tamale training workshop, journalism is not just about what we say, but how and when we say it. We face a choice: to be agents of escalation or architects of peace.

The future of our communities depends on the path we choose.

Greed for money is driving Ghana into mourning – Dr Joyce Aryee

The Executive Director of Salt and Light Ministries, Dr Joyce Aryee, has urged Ghanaians to unite in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, and to resist the lure of money that fuels environmental destruction and harms the nation.

Her remarks follow the tragic helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, which claimed the lives of eight gallant men reportedly on a mission related to anti-galamsey operations in the Ashanti Region.

Speaking on News File on Saturday, August 9, 2025, as monitored by GhanaWeb, Dr Aryee expressed deep concern about the consequences of placing monetary gain above the national interest.

“I think it is time we take a hard look at the difficulty in dealing with illegal mining and handle it as the law provides, we must do it. It is time to unite. We must unite to end galamsey,” she said.

‘We need to address our national emergency response system’ – Rtd Col Aboagye

Dr Aryee warned against allowing the pursuit of wealth to dictate actions that ultimately destroy Ghana’s natural resources and endanger its people.

“We cannot let money lead us to cause havoc to our nation. A lot must be done to sanitise the system and enforce the law to prevent further tragedies that could plunge the nation into darkness and mourning,” she added.

Cristiano Ronaldo is a five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo is a five-time Ballon d’Or winner

Legendary Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has questioned the credibility of the Ballon d’Or, citing recent decisions that, in his view, have undermined the award’s authenticity.

The former Real Madrid star, who has won the accolade five times and is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, said the award is no longer as credible or prestigious as it once was, and that he no longer holds it in high esteem.

In a recent interview with Sport TV Portugal after Al Nassr’s pre-season match, Ronaldo was asked about the 2025 Ballon d’Or. His blunt response was: “It’s fictional.”

This marks the second consecutive year that Ronaldo has been left out of the final shortlist of 30 players vying for the award.

Humanitarian Aid in Gaza: Morocco, Intervenes On The Ground

0

Since the beginning of this year, Morocco has stepped up its humanitarian efforts to benefit the people of Gaza. The latest shipment, 180 tons, was ordered on July 30 by King Mohammed VI.

The Kingdom stands out from other international actors by sending tons of aid directly to the Palestinians, after approval from the Israeli government.

The Royal Armed Forces (FAR) established airlifts to Israel, then transported the aid by land, via the Karam Abu Salem crossing under Israeli authority, to Gaza.

The fifth convoy of Moroccan aid, sent to Gaza for the Palestinian people, consists of basic food supplies, milk and products specially for children, as well as medicines and surgical equipment for the most vulnerable populations. It also includes blankets, adapted tents, and other equipment.

By opting for humanitarian aid delivered without intermediaries, Morocco asserts an autonomous, assertive, and controlled approach, contrasting with traditional multilateral channels.

This strategic choice strengthens its position as a central player in regional geopolitics and a reliable partner of the Palestinian people.

The Moroccan intervention is not limited to a logistical act. It is also distinguished by its human impact.

Far from the impersonal distributions observed in many emergency contexts, Moroccan aid is delivered in person, with respect and consideration.

This approach fully respects the dignity of the beneficiaries, without media hype or symbolic manipulation.

This method of distribution reflects a vision deeply rooted in the values of active solidarity and sincere fraternity. It is part of a political culture where compassion is expressed through action, not rhetoric.

Omane Boamah’s mother in stable condition – Dr. Kevor

0

The mother of the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, is reported to be in stable condition and has returned to her family in Kwahu.

The Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Mark Oliver Kevor, revealed this in an interview on Accra-based Channel One TV.

This update comes just days after the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of her son and seven others.

The elderly woman was taken to Accra for medical observation on Wednesday evening following the tragic incident through the intervention of Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

“Currently, his mum is fine. It is not easy losing your only child. It is not easy. At her age, she was expecting that she would rather lead and her son would give her a befitting burial. But now, it is a different story, one that she is obviously not prepared for,” Dr. Kevor said.

The Acting Director-General of the National Information Technology Agency (NIA) acknowledged that the family has been a strong source of comfort during this period of grief.

“She was brought down to Accra from Koforidua on Wednesday, but she is back with her Kwahu family. Her chiefs and family have been around. Also, the family of the father of Dr. Omane Boamah from Effiduase has also been around trying to receive visitors,” he added.

Helicopter Crash: ‘Ghana must stand united in grief’

0

Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has called on Ghanaians to unite in the aftermath of the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and six others.

Speaking with Selorm Adonoo on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, August 9, Mohammed expressed deep sorrow over the incident and urged a non-partisan approach to national healing.

“We, as a political party, mourn with H.E. the President John Dramani Mahama, the families and the entire nation. I’m pained, everybody is pained. Unity must be served in purpose and must be a continuous improvement. We must tolerate each other.

“Politics should not be the reason to divide us. Let’s use this opportunity to build and get each other on board, and make sure that the sensitivity of politics and life must drive the focus of development in Ghana,” he suggested.

Mohammed emphasised the importance of love, tolerance, and sincerity in national life, describing the tragedy as a moment to reflect and strengthen bonds.

“For me, this particular moment, let’s call for national unity, serenity, and cleanliness in our quest for political power. And make sure that we let unity, truth and genuine love for each other drive the force. There’s nothing that stops us from loving each other genuinely. I’m so much devastated, I have been very quiet since the incident happened,” he said.

He urged Ghanaians to pray for the deceased in the tragic incident.

“It’s very painful. Who are we to question God? What is left for us to do as Muslims is to pray for the dead. There’s no material thing we can do; we have to pray for them. Nobody will dodge death; death will definitely come to you, it is the time that you don’t know.”

The crash has sparked widespread grief across the country, with various leaders calling for unity and support for the bereaved families.

The eight victims were:

Honour Helicopter crash victims with decisive action against galamsey

0

Deputy National Director of A Rocha Ghana, Daryl Bosu, has called for renewed urgency in the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, following the tragic helicopter crash in the Adansi area that claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and six others.

Speaking with Selorm Adonoo, on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, August 9, Bosu described galamsey as a major drain on the country’s resources and insisted that the loss of lives should not be in vain.

“Galamsey is taking so much from the country. We think that this should be a turning point for Ghana in the fight against galamsey. We cannot let this loss of precious lives be in vain. We really need to let this mean something good for the country.

“This has become a sacrifice on the occasion of that particular day. Letting us know that we cannot go back to the neglect, the inaction and all the things when it comes to galamsey, all the things that we need to do that we haven’t done. We cannot let this go to waste. So much has been lost, and the sacrifice is so deep and tough,” he said.

He urged the government to hold all actors in the illegal mining chain accountable, including security agencies, state appointees, and public officials.

He further called for consequences for those who enable or neglect to act against the menace, stressing that no one should be allowed to go unpunished.

“Everybody must see this as a rallying point to bring about some change. Nobody should be allowed to go scot-free; there should be consequences for the police, military, everybody, state appointees, and public officials who are supervising and have the capacity and power.

He added, “If you are going to sit negligently and not do anything, this sacrifice must remind you of what should be done. We need to change the way we tackle this issue, and we need to address the issue head-on. This sacrifice cannot be left to go in vain.”

Bosu said the tragedy should inspire decisive action to end illegal mining, warning against a return to “neglect and inaction” on the issue.

“There’s no longer any excuse for us not to act decisively in dealing with galamsey,” he suggested.

The eight victims were:

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence

Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, and MP for Tamale Central

Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator

Dr. Samuel Sarpong, National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)

‘We need to address our national emergency response system’ – Rtd Col Aboagye

0

Colonel Festus Aboagye is a retired military officer Colonel Festus Aboagye is a retired military officer

Security analyst and retired military officer, Colonel Festus Aboagye, has questioned the handling of the burnt bodies carried in cocoa sacks after the military helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, in Adansi Sikaman in the Ashanti Region.

Speaking on News File on Saturday, August 9, 2025, as monitored by GhanaWeb, Col Aboagye criticised Ghana’s emergency response systems and lamented the country’s approach to disaster management.

“I am saying that for the purposes of dignity, somebody, national security, could have told his principals that we have secured the bodies, the remains. Can you please make available some decent material? I mean, assuming that they were in the sacks and they were covered with polythene, that would even have been fine,” he stated.

He also called for a cohesive national emergency response mechanism that prioritises both operational efficiency and the dignity of those affected.

“If any of us can imagine that before those pictures were taken off the screen, one of the children of these eight saw their father being carried in a cocoa sack, how would that child feel? It’s like you have wasted your time serving your country,” he added.

The other victims of the crash were Dr Samuel Sarpong, Vice-Chair of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; Squadron Leader Peter Anala; Flying Officer Twum Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo.

A candlelight vigil and memorial service will be held at the forecourt of the State House on Saturday, August 9, 2025, in remembrance of the gallant men who died in the line of duty.

GAF’s leading role in Helicopter crash probe threatens public confidence — BPS

0

The Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) has warned that allowing the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to lead the investigation into Wednesday’s fatal military helicopter crash risks undermining the inquiry’s credibility.

The BPS noted that the GAF, as the operator of the ill-fated aircraft, is an “interested party” in the case, and its involvement in determining the cause of the crash presents a clear conflict of interest.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Saturday, August 9, BPS Executive Director Dr. Nana Yaw Akwadaa cautioned that such an arrangement could reduce transparency and erode public trust in the findings.

“We called for the investigations not to be led by the Ghana Armed Forces because in this respect, the GAF is an interested party in the outcome. If they investigate this incident, the chances of not getting the transparency we need are very high. Considering the public anxiety and numerous allegations, we believe that if the GAF leads this investigation, it will undermine public confidence,” Dr. Akwadaa said.

The caution follows the August 6 crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, which claimed nine lives, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

Other victims included Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed; former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Initial reports indicate the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter was travelling from Accra to Obuasi when it went off radar. The cause of the crash remains unknown.

Dr. Akwadaa emphasised that for the investigation to be credible, it must be led by an independent body made up of civil aviation safety experts and relevant oversight institutions.

Meanwhile, the state funeral for the eight victims is scheduled for Friday, August 15.

Pru East MP Narrates How He Narrowly Escaped Crashed GAF Helicopter in Video

0

Member of Parliament (MP) for Pru East, Emmanuel Kwaku Boam, has opened up on how he and other National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs narrowly escaped the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) helicopter crash.

In a video sighted by YEN.com.gh, the MP recalled how government officials of the party received a last-minute invitation to attend the event at Obuasi.

“A day before, that is on Tuesday evening, it was shared on our platform that any MP who would be available should go and support the President at Obuasi.

Mr Kwaku Boam said some MPs were displeased with the last-minute invitation and complained about how they were invited.

Additionally, he had an event at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra, and it was impossible to join the team in Obuasi.

“Because our responsibilities are many, I had an event at Kempinski. So I couldn’t join. That week, I also had an event which started on Tuesday. I attended, and Dr Omane Boamah was there. He left right after the President launched the programme. On Wednesday morning, my programme was supposed to continue, and I was expected to be at Kempinski. So, that’s what prevented me from putting up my name as an attendee,” he added.

Pru East MP says things may have been different

During a radio interview, the MP noted that things may have been different if many MPs had opted to attend the event. He said a different aircraft would have been assigned to the team attending the Obuasi event.

“If we had more numbers, I’m sure a different aircraft would have been assigned. Because it happened when we were attending the burial of the mother of one of the MPs. Whenwe realised that the numbers were many, we changed the flight and used a bigger one,” the Pru East MP said.

Screams & Skepticism: How Telecel 2Moorch Money Promo winners react to GH20K wins

0

From frantic verification missions to ear-piercing screams, weekly winners in the ongoing Telecel 2Moorch Money promo are reacting in unforgettable ways as they discover they have won GH¢20,000 in cash rewards.

For many, it’s too good to believe and too exciting to stay quiet, but for a few others, outright rejection of the good fortune is due to disbelief.

Paul Owusu, a clearing agent with a private company at Tema Port, like many young people juggling the daily hustle, never imagined himself winning anything in a major national promotion, especially one as big as Telecel’s 2Moorch Money promo.

The Dansoman resident said that through constant receipt of messages encouraging him to join the promo and seeing multiple advertisements, he decided to opt in for the fun of it and prove that he will not win anything.

“I wasn’t interested at first because how can I win cash rewards for staying active on the network when there are people who buy way more airtime and bundles than I do?” Paul quizzed.

When the winning call came, Paul was still overwhelmed with doubt. “I thought it was a scam. I didn’t believe it. The Telecel official asked me, ‘Are you not happy?’ and I said, ‘I am,’ but deep down, I was still unsure.”

What followed next was Paul’s transformation into a ‘Verifier-in-Chief.’ He went straight into investigator mode and texted Telecel’s fraud reporting line to enquire, called customer service helpline to confirm, and visited the Dansoman retail shop for in-person checks, all in his quest to verify the authenticity of the call.

Paul’s final step was checking the official announcement phone number in the terms and conditions section published on the promo page of the Telecel Play app, which matched the number that had called him – 0203000004. “That’s when I knew it was legit,” he said.

Soon after, he was invited to the official prize presentation at the Kasoa New Market.  Paul didn’t let the money sit idle. He has already invested over half into fixed deposits at his bank, upgraded his iPhone, and made interior improvements at his home.

“When I got there and received the GH¢20,000 in my Telecel Cash account, I was so excited. I will tell everyone that it’s real. It’s the grace of God and a game of probability. You don’t lose anything by activating. Just use your normal airtime and bundle, and you could win too. Now everyone in my circle has joined. I’m still aiming for that GH¢1.2 million,” Paul added.

For Abigail Ofori-Boateng, a mother of three, her house in Ejisu, which sits outside of Kumasi, erupted into a bundle of screams when the Telecel representative announced her win on the phone.

“I was getting ready for work when the call came. She said I had won GH¢20,000. I screamed so loud that my children came running and joined in. We just kept screaming.”

An administrator at Herp Conservation Ghana, a non-profit organisation into the protection of endangered animals in the Ashanti Region, Abigail said she opted in after seeing the promo messages regularly but never gave winning much thought.

“I got several texts a day about the promo and just activated. But I honestly had zero hope of winning. Even when I told people at work, nobody believed me. Until I showed them the money in my Telecel Cash account and photos from the event. Now all my friends who doubted me have joined too.”

Abigail didn’t splurge the weekly prize money. Instead, she made smart financial moves. “I’ve bought shares in some listed companies. I want the money to grow. I didn’t want to waste it. It’s easier to blow money you’ve not worked so hard for, so I had to make that hard decision. The promo is real. Just activate, recharge, and you could be the next winner.

Launched in June, the Telecel 2Moorch Money promo has gained unexpected momentum, drawing in more than a million active participants and distributing over GH¢1.1million to 57 customers in weekly prizes and about GH¢722,000 to over 7,200 participants in daily prizes as of Friday, 8th August.

Daily and weekly winners have emerged from all 16 regions of Ghana over the last two months of the campaign.

Each day, 120 Telecel users win GH¢100 and up to eight lucky customers win GH¢20,000, with the crown jewel of GH¢1.2 million up for grabs at the end of September.

Aneth Muga, Director of Consumer Business at Telecel Ghana, said the responses from customers has been overwhelmingly rewarding.

“The 2Moorch Money promo is our way of giving back to the people who power Telecel as a network, which is the average Ghanaian customer. We have heard so many inspiring stories, including from students, market women, mechanics, and corporate professionals, whose lives have changed because of this promo. It’s proof that when you believe and activate, incredible things can happen,” Aneth said.

Open to all active Telecel users, including enterprise customers, Telecel users can opt in by simply dialling *500#, sending ‘WIN’ to 500 or activating it via the Telecel Play app.

Subscribers can then increase their winning chances by purchasing airtime, bundles, or making transactions with their Telecel Cash accounts.

“There’s always that feeling that these things are for other people. Nothing like this ever happens to people like me. I’ve learned that sometimes it’s okay to take a little leap and have faith, even if it’s just by activating your line and staying active,” Paul said.

Stylish Outfits for Women to Wear to Church Services

0

Dressing for church requires a perfect blend of style, elegance, and modesty, and today’s fashion offers countless ways for women to achieve this refined balance. Whether you prefer vibrant African prints, timeless classics, or soft, feminine looks, there are stunning outfits that allow you to express both your faith and fashion sense with poise.

A classic choice is the Ankara midi gown. Known for its vibrant patterns and cultural significance, Ankara fabric offers endless design possibilities while maintaining modesty. Opt for flared or A-line cuts with high necklines, puff sleeves, or peplum details for a stylish yet reserved look.

Flowing maxi gowns in fabrics like chiffon or silk are another graceful option. These materials create a soft, elegant silhouette that’s comfortable and chic. Pastels, floral prints, or color-block designs add vibrancy without being overly bold.

For a more structured style, a tailored skirt and blouse combination works beautifully. A knee-length pencil or pleated skirt paired with a long-sleeved blouse creates a smart, sophisticated appearance. Lace accents, structured collars, or subtle ruffles can add a touch of charm.

Kaftans and bubu gowns are also excellent choices, offering full coverage and effortless elegance. Light beadwork, embroidery, or simple embellishments can elevate their beauty. Complete the look with minimal jewelry and a neat head wrap for a polished, respectful appearance.

Ultimately, church fashion is about looking neat, dignified, and well put together. With the right fabrics and thoughtful styling, you can maintain modesty while making a graceful statement.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsfile, Mr. Sefa Kayi reflected on the immense personal and political toll the tragedy may have had on the President.

“I think more of us should bear President Mahama up in prayers despite our collective grief. He must be the most broken person in spite of our collective grief,” he said, noting that the victims included some of the President’s most trusted associates.

Norwich City midfielder Forson Amankwah says he is targeting playing at the 2026 World Cup with the Black Stars.

Ghana are on the verge of securing qualification for the tournament, which will be scheduled to be hosted in the USA, Canada and Mexico next year.

Ghana will face Chad and Mali in the Matchday 7 and 8 games in September before wrapping up their qualifiers in October against Comoros and Central African Republic.

Individuals Daddy Lumba sang about and their role in his life journey

Following the sudden demise of Ghana’s Highlife legend, Daddy Lumba, the spotlight has been thrown at the individuals, mentioned in his songs over the years.

Throughout his iconic 34-album catalog, Daddy Lumba referenced several names believed to be those of relatives, friends, and notable individuals he encountered in his life and career.

Kumasi candlelight vigil for Daddy Lumba postponed indefinitely

Below is a look at some of the people he mentioned in his music:

Yaa Tiwaa

In 1990, Daddy Lumba released one of his most touching songs, “Me Mpaebo” (My Prayer).

In the song, he mentioned Yaa Tiwaa, reportedly his sister-in-law and sister to his first wife, Akosua Serwaa.

According to reports, Yaa Tiwaa struggled with infertility, and through the song, Lumba offered a heartfelt prayer for her, drawing a comparison to Sarah from the Bible, who also battled childlessness.

Akosua Brempomaah and Faustina Fosu

In his emotional track “Makra Mo”, (Farewell), Lumba mentioned several family members, including his sisters Akosua Brempomaah and Faustina Fosu, his late mother, and his first wife.

He also pleaded with his siblings to care for his wife and children after his passing. In the song, he says goodbye to his fans, urging them not to weep when he is gone.

Ama Saah

The late musician often referenced his late mother, Ama Saah, throughout his musical career.

In songs such as “Makra Mo” and especially “Okuafo Ye Adwuma A Opon”, he dedicated heartfelt messages to her. He acknowledged her sacrifices in raising him and his sister.

According to Lumba, she lived a fulfilled life and deserved to rest peacefully.

Johnson Kwadwo Fosu

Many fans wondered whether Lumba had ever mentioned his father in his songs, as he often did his mother.

He did, in fact, mention his father, Johnson Kwadwo Fosuh, in the 1997 song “Se Emere No Beso A”.

His father, a teacher, passed away while Lumba was still a teenager.

In the song, he reflected on his father’s influence and admitted that he only came to understand his father’s lifestyle as he grew older.

Charles Opoku Kwadwo Darko

Charles Opoku Kwadwo Darko, a renowned businessman and close friend of Lumba, was mentioned in the 2008 song “Mpempem Do Me”.

In the track, which addressed criticisms and false rumours, Lumba mentioned Charles Darko by name and advised him not to be affected by the gossip being spread about him either.

Kennedy Agyapong (Kenpong)

In his song “Nea Wo Ho Beto Wo”, Lumba referenced Kennedy Agyapong, popularly known as Kenpong, a Ghanaian millionaire and businessman.

While many initially assumed the song was referring to the former MP for Assin Central, it later became clear that Lumba was talking about Kenpong, a close friend.

Their relationship was further confirmed when Kenpong was seen in tears at Lumba’s residence following his death.

Georgina Adu Ansere

Lumba also referenced Georgina Adu Ansere in the song “Se Wo Tan Me A” (If You Hate Me).

In the track, he spoke about being disliked simply because Georgina, a woman from Atwima Kokoben, liked him.

He used the song to criticize those who spread baseless rumours and expressed that their hatred would ultimately amount to nothing.

Parts of ‘Medo Wasem Bebree’

At the beginning of the song “Medo Wasem Bebree”, Lumba gave shout-outs to a dance group known as ‘The Lumba Brothers’ based in Amsterdam.

He mentioned names such as Yvonne Prempeh, Abigail, Manfred, Brother Dennis, Charles, and Kwabena, expressing gratitude for their unwavering support of his music.

Kwaku Wiredu and Osei Kwadwo

In the song “Yeeya Aka Akwantuo Mu”, Lumba acknowledged Kwaku Wiredu (nicknamed Soweto) and Osei Kwadwo (also known as Trustpee).

According to Lumba, these individuals provided shelter and support to Ghanaians living abroad. He expressed appreciation for their efforts in helping fellow citizens in the diaspora.

Charles Allen Gyimah

In his song “Ankwanoma”, Lumba mentioned Charles Allen Gyimah, the owner of Ghana Video City.

The tribute served to honour Gyimah’s immense contributions to the creative arts industry in Ghana and his support of local talent, including Lumba himself.

Love has crossed borders as singer and music executive Mr Eazi has married Temi Otedola, daughter of Nigerian billionaire Femi Otedola, in a white wedding ceremony in Iceland.

According to sources close to the family, Hallgrímskirkja Church in Reykjavík was the venue for their special day.

The church, adorned with flowers, was closed to the public to ensure a private and intimate celebration.

Only close family and friends were present, but the guest list was still star-studded.

Among those who attended were Nigerian comedian Broda Shaggi, Africa’s richest man Aliko Dangote, Temi’s sister DJ Cuppy, and their mother.

Some rare glimpses of the ceremony surfaced online after Broda Shaggi shared clips on his Instagram Story.

One video showed him spending time with Mr Eazi and Aliko Dangote in Iceland, capturing the joyful mood of the occasion.

Mr Eazi and Temi’s relationship has been in the public eye for years. In April 2022, they announced their engagement, with Temi posting a video of the proposal on Instagram.

The couple had previously hinted that they preferred a small and private wedding, and they stayed true to their word.

DVLA vows to take legal action over alleged sale of 37 office

0

Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA)

The Board of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has accused the previous government of unlawfully selling its former Greater Accra Regional Office land, located behind the Ghana Police Church, to private individuals, despite the site having been compulsorily acquired for a now-defunct public project.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Monday, the Board Chairman of the DVLA, George Spencer Quaye, alleged that the land, originally taken over by the state for the proposed “Energy City” initiative, had been sold to private developers after the project failed to materialise.

He described the move as a breach of trust and a violation of the original purpose of the land acquisition.

“We were relocated from this property for a national project, but as we speak, there is no Energy City here. Instead, the land has been sold off to private developers. This is a clear breach of the purpose for which it was taken,” Quaye said.

According to him, part of the land is now being used by a Swiss-owned company as a vehicle warehouse, while other parcels are reportedly being sold at market rates of up to $3 million per acre.

Quaye argued that, under Ghanaian law, land acquired by the government for a specific public purpose must revert to its original owner if that purpose is not fulfilled, stressing that the continued sale and private use of the property violates both legal and ethical standards.

The Chief Executive Officer of the DVLA, Julius Neequaye Kotey, also condemned the actions of the previous administration, calling them a betrayal of public trust.

“This land still belongs to DVLA. If the Energy City project failed, the land should have been returned to us — not sold off,” he stated.

MKotey further revealed that the DVLA’s current regional office at Haatso-Bohye, where it was relocated after the original land acquisition, is not registered in the Authority’s name. A land title search, he said, shows the property belongs to a private developer, Unique Development Groups, rather than the government or DVLA.

“We are now occupying land that doesn’t belong to us and are expected to pay the private owner for using it. Meanwhile, our own land has been given away,” he lamented.

He added that the current site poses significant operational challenges due to traffic congestion, which discourages customers and affects the Authority’s revenue.

Kotey pledged that the DVLA Board would pursue legal and administrative remedies, announcing plans to petition the Attorney General, the Office of the Special Prosecutor, and the National Security Secretariat.

“We will not relent until this land is returned to DVLA,” he vowed. “We are committed to building a proper public office that serves the Ghanaian people, not watching as public property is handed over for private profit. We will not defend the mistakes of the past, but we will do everything necessary to correct them.”

Jeremy Doku proposes to his girlfriend in Dubai after Ghana visit [Video]

Manchester City star Jeremy Doku has proposed to his girlfriend just before the start of the new season. The Belgian international of Ghanaian descent is looking to wed his girlfriend, Shireen Erin Lyannda Raymond.

In a video shared on his social media page and re-shared by Pulse Ghana, Shireen was visibly surprised by the proposal as they walked up to a beautiful decoration made with flowers and candles.

The soon-to-be couple both donned all-white outfits as they immersed themselves in the moment. Shireen, pleasantly surprised by the whole glitz and glam, asked Doku if he was serious, and he assured her of his decision to marry her.

The 23-year-old confidently told her:

You’re my girlfriend, but I don’t want you to stay my girlfriend. I want you to be my future wife.

Where did you get this from? I’m actually shaking. Where did this come from?

However, before she could fully realise what was happening, Doku kneeled, opened a box containing a beautiful ring, and popped the golden question while mentioning her full name.

Shireen answered in the affirmative. Doku put the ring on her finger, and they kissed.

Jeremy Doku chills in Ghana

Doku recently travelled back to his family’s homeland of Ghana for a touching visit to Madina, where he gave back to the community that means so much to his heritage.

On Monday, July 14, 2025, the winger arrived at his family’s house, catching up with relatives and old neighbours.

The trip wasn’t just about visiting family, though. Doku set up his football tournament called the Jeremy Doku Cup to encourage young local players and show them what’s possible.

While he plays for Belgium’s national team, Doku has never forgotten his Ghanaian roots. He speaks perfect Twi, loves Ghanaian music and food, and says his heritage has made him the person he is today.

Doku, per officials, requested the passport during his time in Ghana, where he undertook a few charity initiatives, met the Asantehene Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, and some government officials.

The gown’s use of the Ankara fabric lends it an additional layer of glitz and sophistication, which makes it look even more stunning.

The Aso Ebi style is yet another Ankara design that is appropriate for formal events and gatherings. This look, which is prevalent among Nigerian women, entails dressing in a fabric and ttern that are identical to those worn by other attendees at an event. When done correctly, it is an attractive method to demonstrate solidarity and unity, and it also looks good. The Aso-Ebi fashion can be used to create a wide range of garments, from voluminous and floor-length dresses to chic jumpsuits.

Dresses and skirts made of well-tailored Ankara can nevertheless make a statement, even if the wearer favours a more understated fashion aesthetic. It is possible to create a trendy and elegant style that is ideal for any special occasion by pairing a straightforward Ankara dress or skirt with a number of eye-catching accessories.

How Ghana’s DTI is tackling youth unemployment through TVET

0

In a country where thousands of young people graduate each year into a job market with limited opportunities, Ghana’s Design and Technology Institute (DTI) is providing a bold and practical solution: Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

Located in Accra, DTI is redefining education by offering hands-on, industry-relevant training in disciplines such as robotics, welding, and creative arts — skills that align directly with current market demands.

From the Classroom to the Workshop

For students like Frederick Agbedanu and Sanata Zerbo, DTI offers more than just a traditional learning experience. It’s a launchpad into a future built on practical skills, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

“I never imagined I’d be building functional robotic systems,” says Frederick, beaming as he demonstrates one of his class projects. “Here, we don’t just learn theories — we build, we create, and we solve real problems.”

Sanata, one of the few female students in the architecture programme, shared how TVET is empowering her to break barriers in a traditionally male-dominated field.

“I’m learning skills that make me employable and independent. I can start my own business or work anywhere in the world,” she said confidently.

Innovation Meets Opportunity

Behind the scenes, Ebenezer Dadzie, Head of Design and Innovation at DTI, is leading efforts to ensure the institute stays ahead of the curve.

He emphasised the institute’s ongoing investment in modern equipment, tools, and technology to foster a creative environment that supports innovation and entrepreneurship.

“We’ve secured significant funding to expand our facilities and introduce cutting-edge tools. Our students are trained on the same equipment used in global industries,” he said. “This is how we bridge the skills gap — by aligning education with the demands of the workforce.”

Education That Works

Ama Akor, Registrar of DTI, believes that Ghana’s path to reducing youth unemployment lies in embracing TVET as a cornerstone of education reform.

“The narrative around TVET needs to change,” she said. “It’s not a second choice. It’s a smart choice  one that leads directly to jobs, self-employment, and real-world success.”

She added that DTI is also working with industry partners to ensure students graduate with both skills and professional connections.

A Model for the Future

With its strong emphasis on practical learning, innovation, and industry collaboration, DTI is positioning itself as a model for how technical education can address one of Ghana’s most pressing challenges  youth unemployment.

As more young Ghanaians enroll in TVET programs, the hope is clear: build a generation that is not just educated, but employable, adaptable, and entrepreneurial.

In a job market that rewards skills over certificates, DTI is proving that TVET is not the future  it is the present.

On July 29, 2025, the family of late Highlife legend Daddy Lumba opened a book of condolence to the public, allowing loved ones to pay their final respects.

Since then, many notable personalities have visited the late singer’s private residence to sign the book and share their memories.

However, a video that surfaced on social media on August 1, 2025, showed Prophet Nicholas Osei, popularly known as Kumchacha, appearing to copy another person’s tribute while attempting to write his own.

In an interview on Onua FM, shared on the station’s social media platforms on August 8, 2025, Kumchacha clarified what actually happened that day.

According to him, it is not wrong to learn from someone who knows more than you, adding that even Ghana learns from other nations.

He explained that when he first opened the book, he mistakenly wrote a message wishing Daddy Lumba a long life, something clearly inappropriate for someone who had passed away.

A person standing nearby corrected him, advising that he should instead write something positive about the late singer.

The man of God added that he had even considered using his thumbprint in the book instead of signing his name because that was what he was most comfortable with.

“In this world, if you don’t know something, you learn. Even in Ghana, we learn from America and the UK. I didn’t even notice I was being recorded. The mistake I made was wishing ‘long live’ in the Book of Condolence for the deceased.

“Someone pointed out to me that we don’t write ‘long live’ for a person who has passed away. They informed me that I should write something good about the person instead. Unfortunately, I couldn’t think of anything positive to write. In the end, I just wrote my name and signed it.

“I even considered using my thumbprint as a signature, but there was no option for that. In fact, I usually stamp with my thumb when I go to the bank,” Kumchacha said.
