The victims were reportedly on an official mission to Obuasi to attend an illegal mining (galamsey) event when the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter they were flying in went off radar and crashed. Their remains have since been transported to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.
Since the confirmation of their deaths, tributes have continued to flood in from political leaders, institutions, and citizens across the country.
President John Dramani Mahama declared three days of national mourning beginning Thursday, August 7
Following the tragic incident, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has been directed by the President to act as Minister for Defence, while the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, will now also oversee the Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation portfolio.

Accra, Aug. 7, GNA – The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is mourning the loss of Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, and seven other government officials, and military personnel who died in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
Naval Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director-General of the Public Relations Department of the GAF, told the Ghana News Agency in an exclusive interview that the tragedy had left personnel visibly shaken.
“In fact, it is the most tragic day within the Ghana Armed Forces. With my over 26 years’ experience, I’ve never seen something like this in the Armed Forces where you see personnel visibly shaken,” she said.
Naval Captain Arhin described the aftermath as extremely difficult for soldiers, emphasising the close-knit nature of the military.
“It’s a very, a very difficult time for the soldiers because the Armed Forces is like a family,” she said.
Naval Captain Arhin called the incident a national disaster and warned that recovery would take time.
“…It’s a national disaster and a tragedy that would take a long time for us to overcome. Apart from those who died in the crash, we have their wives. Some of them are also upset. Some of them live with us in the barracks. And so, it’s a very devastating blow to the Armed Forces,” she added.
Naval Captain Arhin criticised the manner in which some media outlets reported the incident, describing it as insensitive.
“We are disappointed at some of the major media houses and the way they have carried this particular incident. I am sure that we would have all loved that if any of the personnel on board were our relatives…we would have loved that somebody came to our house to inform us before seeing it in the media,” she said.
She condemned the circulation of graphic images and speculative reporting.
“Yes, they are trying to inform us, but the way it went was a bit disappointing, especially those who were showing charred bodies, others who were drawing their own conclusions and muddying the waters instead of we giving respect to the departed, which is a key cultural belief of Ghanaians irrespective of where we come from. We respect and we honour the dead, and that is what we had expected,” she added.
Naval Captain Arhin urged the public to show restraint in their discussions and media sharing.
“We appeal to the general public to be minded about the discussions and the yes, and the coverage. We also appeal to those sharing the videos of the charred bodies to please try and delete it. They should put themselves in the states of the family members of these people,” she said.
She called on all Ghanaians to treat the incident as a national loss and honour the memory of the deceased.

In an interview on Hitz FM and shared on social media on August 6th, 2025, Ablekuma-based up-and-rising artiste Hunnyboy disclosed how attempts to get in touch with Shatta Wale, six months after releasing his song, proved futile.
Hunnyboy said he wasn’t using Tiktok then because he only had a few followers, “I only had 200 followers on Tiktok back then, and my posts were not going far so I stopped using it” but that particular day his friend encouraged him to post his video anyway, which he did and captioned it “imagine Shatta Wale on this ” without giving it much thought.
The artiste said he woke up the next day, however, with a comment under his post from Shatta Wale. His excitement was further expanded when Shatta Wale asked him to contact his PRO, Sammy Flex, so they could get some work done.
Hunnyboy further explained that getting in touch with Sammy Flex wasn’t easy because he (Sammy Flex) was busy, and he (Hunnyboy) couldn’t.
The artiste recounts that Shatta Wale himself later contacted him to send the beat. And not long after that, Shatta reordered his verse onto the beat and sent it back to him on his (Shatta Wale) personal WhatsApp number. It didn’t end there; Shatta also made himself available for the music video.
Hunnyboy said the song “winning” was a manifestation, “I wrote and recorded winning even when I had nothing going on, it’s one thing to say you’re winning when you have something going on, and it’s another thing when there’s nothing but you still believe you’re winning. That was the kind of situation to which I wrote winning”.
The artiste believes he manifested and it became a reality, and now he has thousands of followers on TikTok.

Watch as Ghana Armed Forces prepares to receive remains of 8 killed in helicopter crash;
Samples of the charred remains recovered from the scene of the tragic military helicopter crash at Sikaman in the Adansi Akrofuom area of the Ashanti Region have been flown to South Africa for further forensic examination and identification.
A brief but solemn ceremony was held at the Golden Jubilee Terminal in Accra on Thursday, August 7, 2025, before the remains were airlifted aboard Ibrahim Mahama’s private jet, Dzata.
The transfer was to facilitate DNA testing of the remains, with results expected within 6 to 12 hours. The remains were accompanied by Chief Superintendent Edward Abban, head of the Police DNA Forensic Science Laboratory at the CID Headquarters in Accra.
The remains are those of the eight individuals, comprising three military crew members and five passengers, who perished in the military helicopter crash.
Present at the brief ceremony were the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak; Minister for Health, Mintah Akandoh; Minister for Lands, Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah; Minister for Trade, Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare; businessman Ibrahim Mahama; among others.
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) confirmed that a Z-9 military helicopter had taken off from Accra at 9:12 a.m. en route to the Central Command in Obuasi, but lost radar contact shortly after departure.

Villarreal CF have officially signed Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey on a free transfer, but the move has sparked backlash due to the player’s ongoing legal troubles in the United Kingdom.
The Spanish club confirmed Partey’s arrival on Thursday, August 7, 2025, stating the 32-year-old will join the squad at their training ground on Thursday ahead of the 2025/26 season.
In their official statement, Villarreal praised Partey’s qualities, describing him as a “complete midfielder” with “great stamina and exceptional physical attributes.”
The club highlighted his past success with Arsenal, Atlético Madrid, and the Ghana national team, where he has earned over 50 caps.
BREAKING: Villarreal announce the signing of Thomas Partey
However, the announcement also addressed the legal storm surrounding Partey. The former Arsenal man is currently facing five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault in the UK, related to alleged incidents between 2021 and 2022.
He has denied all charges and is expected to appear in court later this year.
“Due to the law in England in relation to ongoing proceedings, the club is unable to comment further,” the club stated, but reiterated their respect for the principle of presumption of innocence.
Despite the legal uncertainty, Villarreal’s decision to proceed with the signing has drawn heavy criticism from sections of their fanbase.
Hundreds have voiced outrage online, with petitions circulating demanding the club reverse the transfer.
Many have labelled the move as “a stain on the club” and accused the management of placing sporting success above ethics.
Villarreal concluded their statement by reaffirming their commitment to diversity and the condemnation of “all acts of violence in all its forms, including gender-based violence.”
Villarreal Supporters Group President calls for Partey’s move to be ‘suspended’
Partey joins after a five-year stint with Arsenal, where he made 167 appearances, won the 2023/24 Community Shield, and helped the Gunners to multiple top-four finishes.

he US claims that the spill caused dangerous pollution in the area
The Zambian government has dismissed claims of dangerous pollution in the Copperbelt mining region, following safety concerns raised by the US embassy.
On Wednesday, the US embassy issued a health alert, ordering the immediate withdrawal of its personnel in Kitwe town and nearby areas due to concerns of “widespread contamination of water and soil” linked to a February spill at the Sino-Metals mine.
The spill happened when a tailings dam, used to store toxic waste and heavy metals, collapsed into the Kafue River, a key drinking water source, following heavy rain.
The US embassy said there was new information that showed “the extent of hazardous and carcinogenic substances”.
It warned that beyond the “contaminated water and soil, contaminants from the spilled mine tailings may also become airborne, posing a health threat if inhaled”.
Zambia’s government spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa hit back, saying the “laboratory results show that PH levels have returned to normal” in the area and the water was safe to drink.
Mweetwa said there were no longer any serious implications for public health, water safety, agriculture or the environment.
“There is, therefore, absolutely no need to press the ‘panic button’ today to alarm the nation and the international community.”
Sino-Metals Leach Zambia mine is a subsidiary of China Nonferrous Metal Mining Group, which is owned by the Chinese government.
The BBC has asked Sino-Metals for comment.
At the time of the spill, Sino-Metals pledged to compensate the affected communities and restore the environment.
The spill affected aquatic life as well as farmers who use the water to irrigate their crops.
Green Economy Minister Mike Mposha said the government had been proactive since February and was continuing to update the public, while affected communities have been compensated.
Minister of Water Development Collins Nzovu said the government has been constantly testing the water, and that it met World Health Organization standards.
Opposition Green Party leader Peter Sinkamba said the US embassy’s health alert was part of geopolitics.
He wondered why it had taken the embassy since February to issue the alert, while accusing it of keeping quiet on the lead poisoning in central Zambia that partly traces its roots to Western mining giants.
Centre for Environment Justice executive director Maggie Mapalo Mwape told the BBC the pollution was a national disaster that demands immediate and concrete action to mitigate its effects and prevent future occurrences.
She called for decisive action to address this environmental crisis and protect the rights and wellbeing of Zambian citizens.

The tragic crash of a Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter in the Ashanti Region on August 6, 2025 — which claimed the lives of eight individuals, including Minister for Defence Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Minister for Environment Alhaji Dr. Murtala Muhammed — has cast renewed scrutiny on the safety record of the Chinese-manufactured aircraft.
Built by the Harbin Aircraft Industry Group, the Z-9 is a multi-role utility helicopter developed from the French-designed Eurocopter Dauphin.
While widely adopted by China’s military and exported to various countries across Africa and Asia, the helicopter has been the subject of persistent concerns over safety, structural reliability, and maintenance challenges.
A Pattern of Crashes Across Africa
The Ghana tragedy is not an isolated incident. In recent years, several African nations operating the Z-9 have experienced serious — and sometimes fatal — accidents involving the aircraft:
Zambia (2013): A newly delivered Z-9 crashed shortly after arrival, killing a major and injuring another officer.
Cameroon (2014): One of the country’s four Z-9 helicopters crashed within six months of procurement. Another went down during a patrol mission.
Mali (2019): The last operational Z-9 in the country’s fleet was destroyed in a crash, ending its short deployment.
Gabon (2011): A Z-9 involved in a VIP transport mission crashed, prompting a quiet review of the entire fleet.
These repeated incidents highlight a troubling pattern, especially among countries that use the Z-9 for critical roles such as troop transport, search-and-rescue, and anti-poaching operations.
Pakistan Navy Also Raised Alarm
Concerns about the Z-9 extend beyond Africa. The Pakistan Navy has publicly criticized the Z-9EC — a naval variant — citing numerous mechanical and operational failures, including:
Tail rotor blade failures, causing the aircraft to swing dangerously during flight.
Corrosion of main rotor blades due to exposure to seawater, reducing their operational lifespan drastically.
Landing gear issues, with faulty brake valves leading to multiple tire bursts during landings.
Despite establishing a dedicated maintenance facility, Pakistani authorities reported that many problems persisted, primarily due to substandard Chinese spare parts, according to internal reviews and regional defense sources.
A Worrying Future for Air Safety?
While the Z-9 remains in service in several countries, including Ghana, recent developments raise fresh questions about the reliability of Chinese-supplied military hardware in high-risk missions.
Aviation experts point to three key issues undermining safety: weak after-sales support, poor-quality spare parts, and inadequate training for pilots and maintenance crews. These deficiencies, they say, have contributed to the helicopter’s elevated risk profile, especially in Africa.
As Ghana launches a formal investigation into the August 6 crash, the tragedy may serve as a turning point — prompting governments across the continent to re-evaluate procurement standards for critical military and emergency aviation assets.
The Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko-Computer, has announced that all discussions regarding the upcoming Akwatia by-election have been suspended in the wake of the tragic military helicopter crash that occurred on Wednesday, August 6.
The accident claimed the lives of several high-ranking government and party officials, including the NDC’s Director of Elections and Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Citiuation Room on Thursday, August 7, Tanko described Dr. Boamah as the backbone of the party’s electoral machinery, praising his leadership and strategic insight that helped secure victories in challenging constituencies.
“He was the engine of our directorate. In fact, even after he was made Defence Minister, he was still working as the Director of Elections. For us to win Ablekuma North, he showed us all the strategies to be executed,” he said.
Tanko recounted that he was in direct communication with Dr. Boamah just hours before the fatal crash, working together on plans for the Akwatia by-election.
“As of the morning of yesterday at 7:45 am, he was still working as the Director of Elections, and we discussed the strategy to use for the Akwatia by-election, only for us to lose him in the next couple of hours,” he recounted with emotion.
He went on to laud Dr. Boamah’s remarkable intellect and versatility, describing him as a rare talent who excelled not only in politics but also in medicine, writing, and electoral strategy.
Tanko emphasized the profound impact of the tragedy on the NDC, revealing that the party is currently in mourning and unable to proceed with any electoral plans until further notice.
“Currently, we are devastated by his death and that of the other National Officers. We are devastated. For now, nobody has the nerve to talk about Akwatia. We are mourning our gallant officers. After that, a decision will be taken at the national level. Akwatia is not on the table as of now,” he stated.
Among those who perished in the crash were Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence and Director of Elections; Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology and MP for Tamale Central; Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Dr. Samuel Sarpong, NDC Vice Chairman; and Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate.
Also killed were three officers of the Ghana Air Force: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
The incident has left the NDC, the military, and the entire nation in deep mourning as investigations into the crash continue.

The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that the helicopter departed Accra at 0912 hours and went off radar shortly after takeoff.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing, led by the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau (AIB Ghana) in collaboration with the Armed Forces and international aviation partners.
President John Dramani Mahama has declared three days of national mourning, with flags flown at half-mast across government institutions.
Tributes have been pouring in from political, civil, and diplomatic circles, with institutions and individuals calling for national unity and ethical media coverage in honour of the victims.
IMANI Africa president Mr. Franklin Cudjoe said in a statement; “These individuals devoted their lives to public service, and their loss leaves a deep wound in the soul of our nation. May their legacies guide us toward integrity, courage, and peace.”
Zijin Golden Ridge Limited, which recently acquired the Akyem Gold Mine from Newmont, has been active in promoting sustainable mining practices and community engagement.

It has also proven beneficial for physical preparation before games.
Chelsea declined to comment on the timing and circumstances of the discovery, but more details could come to light once all staff members return from holidays.

British boxing fans can look forward to another showdown between fierce rivals Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn, with the highly anticipated rematch confirmed for 15 November at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The pair first clashed in April at the same venue in a thrilling middleweight contest that saw Eubank claim a unanimous decision victory, winning 116-112 on all three judges’ scorecards. Despite no title being at stake, the fight captured massive attention as it came 35 years after their legendary fathers, Chris Eubank Sr and Nigel Benn, first met in the ring.
After the April bout, fans immediately called for a rematch, and a September 20 date was initially agreed upon. However, the fight fell through amid concerns that Eubank would not be ready in time.
Now, organisers Ring Magazine, owned by Saudi boxing powerbroker Turki Alalshikh, have announced that the rematch will go ahead in November. Benn’s promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, confirmed the news via Instagram. Eubank and his team have yet to comment publicly.
The road to this rematch has been far from smooth. At one point, Hearn declared the fight “dead” after doubts emerged about Eubank’s readiness. But with Alalshikh stepping in to revive negotiations, the blockbuster bout is back on the calendar.
Their first encounter delivered plenty of drama—from a WWE-style entrance by Chris Eubank Sr to the sight of a weight-drained Eubank doing just enough to keep the smaller Benn at bay. Whether the sequel can replicate that magic remains to be seen, but boxing fans will have their answer this November in London.
Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor has recounted a terrifying experience during his tenure as president, revealing how he narrowly escaped a plane crash over the Sahara Desert.
Chronicling the incident in 2007 at Libya during a presidential trip, the former president shared the ordeal, which unfolded while he was travelling from Libya to Sudan on an official assignment.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has confirmed the recovery of the black box from the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter that crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District on Wednesday, August 6, claiming the lives of several high-ranking government and military officials.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, August 7, Dr. Amoakohene announced the progress, indicating that a team of investigators had successfully located the black box at the crash site, a vital step toward unravelling the cause of the tragic incident.
The team, made up of officers from the Ghana Air Force and other military units, embarked on the mission earlier Thursday morning. They were joined by residents and the Assembly Member for the area, who guided them through the forested terrain to the remote crash location.
The crash, described as one of the most devastating air tragedies in recent Ghanaian history, resulted in the death of the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.
Other persons who also perished in the crash included Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former Parliamentary Candidate; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC. The three crew members, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, also died.
Initial reports indicate the helicopter was en route to Obuasi when it went off radar, prompting a swift response and search mission by military and local authorities.
The recovery of the black box is expected to provide crucial data to investigators, who are working against the clock to piece together the chain of events leading to the fatal crash.
Meanwhile, Samples of the remains of the eight individuals who perished have been flown to South Africa for DNA analysis to aid in their identification.
Ghanaian international Thomas Partey has signed a two-year contract with La Liga side Villarreal CF, departing Arsenal FC effective immediately.
The Spanish club announced the transfer on social media Wednesday, confirming the 32-year-old midfielder will join training at their Sports City complex on August 8.
Villarreal’s statement acknowledged the ongoing legal proceedings against Partey, who faces five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault allegedly occurring between 2021 and 2022. The midfielder appeared in a UK court on August 5 where he was granted conditional bail; his next hearing is scheduled for September 2.
Partey’s move concludes a five-year tenure at Arsenal, where he made 99 appearances after joining from Atlético Madrid in 2020. Villarreal, known as the “Yellow Submarine,” finished eighth in La Liga last season and will integrate Partey into their midfield ahead of their 2025-26 campaign opener.
The transfer has drawn scrutiny due to the unresolved criminal case. UK authorities confirm the investigation remains active, though Partey maintains his innocence. Football governance regulations permit transfers during ongoing legal proceedings unless disciplinary sanctions are imposed by federations.

Sudan’s air force has destroyed a UAE aircraft carrying Colombian mercenaries as it was landing at an airport in Darfur controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), army-aligned state TV reported.
The attack late on Wednesday killed at least 40 people, the state broadcaster reported.
The airport has recently come under repeated air strikes by the Sudanese army, which has been at war with the RSF since April 2023.
A military source, speaking to the AFP news agency on condition of anonymity, said the Emirati plane “was bombed and completely destroyed” at Darfur’s Nyala airport.
There was no immediate comment from the RSF.
AFP quoted an Emirati official denouncing what he considered false allegations that the Sudanese army had destroyed the plane.
Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro said his government was trying to find out how many Colombians died in the attack.
“We will see if we can bring their bodies back,” he wrote on X.
State TV said the aircraft had taken off from an airbase in the Gulf, carrying dozens of foreign fighters and military equipment intended for the RSF, which controls nearly all of Darfur.
The army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has long accused the United Arab Emirates of supplying advanced weaponry, including drones, to the RSF via Nyala Airport.
Abu Dhabi has denied the accusations.
Satellite images released by Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Lab have shown multiple Chinese-made long-range drones at the airport of the South Darfur state capital.
On Monday, Sudan’s army-aligned government accused the UAE of recruiting and funding Colombian mercenaries to fight for the RSF, claiming it has documents proving that.
Reports of Colombian fighters in Darfur date back to late 2024 and have been confirmed by United Nations experts.
Colombia seeks to ban mercenaries
This week, the Joint Forces – a pro-army coalition in Darfur – reported more than 80 Colombian mercenaries fighting on the RSF’s side in el-Fasher, the last Darfur state capital still under army control.
The army also released video footage it said was of “foreign mercenaries believed to be from Colombia”, which could not be independently verified.
In December, Sudan said Colombia’s Foreign Ministry had expressed regret “for the participation of some of its citizens in the war”.
Colombian mercenaries, many former soldiers and guerrillas, have appeared in other global conflicts and were previously hired by the UAE for operations in Yemen and the Gulf.
In his post on Wednesday, Petro said he was moving to ban mercenary activity, calling it “a trade in men turned into commodities to kill”.
As fighting continues, thousands of families trapped in the besieged city of el-Fasher are at “risk of starvation”, the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) has warned.
An outbreak of cholera in the North Darfur state, of which el-Fasher is the capital, has further added to the misery.
Sudan’s war, now in its third year, has killed tens of thousands, displaced 13 million, and plunged the nation into the world’s worst hunger and displacement crisis.
The National Communications Authority (NCA) has officially notified Multichoice Ghana Limited of its intention to suspend the company’s authorisation to operate its Subscription Management Service for Satellite Television Broadcasting (Pay TV Direct-to-Home Bouquet).
This regulatory move is being carried out upon the directive of the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George.
The development follows a standoff between Multichoice Ghana and the Minister, who has accused the company, operators of DStv, of imposing unfair and exorbitant subscription fees on Ghanaians.
He reiterated his resolve to take regulatory action against the company, describing the pricing model as exploitative and insensitive to the country’s economic conditions.
In a statement issued on Sunday, August 3, Multichoice Ghana described the Minister’s directive to the NCA as “regrettable,” stating that further reductions in subscription fees were not feasible under current market conditions.
However, the Minister rejected the company’s explanation, arguing that its position fails to reflect the economic hardships currently faced by the average Ghanaian consumer.
In a statement issued on Thursday, August 7, the NCA said the regulatory action is being taken under Section 13 of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), citing concerns over Multichoice Ghana’s pricing model, which it described as “inimical to the public interest.”
As required by law, Multichoice Ghana has been given a 30-day window to respond. During this period, the company may submit its views, take remedial action, or file a written statement of objections regarding the planned suspension.
“By this notice, Multichoice Ghana has thirty (30) days within which the company may present its views, or provide remedial action, and submit a written statement of its objections to the suspension of the authorisation,” the statement said.
The move marks a significant development in the regulation of pay-TV services in Ghana, as the NCA reinforces its mandate to ensure fair and transparent practices in the communications sector.
Further updates are expected upon the conclusion of the 30-day response period.
The Minister’s reaffirmation comes amid rising public dissatisfaction over DStv’s pricing model in Ghana — concerns that have prompted calls for intervention from various stakeholders, including the Minority in Parliament.
While the Minority has urged a diplomatic approach, encouraging engagement between the Ministry, MultiChoice Ghana, and the National Communications Authority (NCA), the Minister has insisted that the process of regulatory enforcement will proceed.

A small plane carrying medical staff crashed in a densely-populated neighbourhood in Kenya’s capital on Thursday afternoon, killing six people, local authorities said.
The Cessna plane, run by AMREF Flying Doctors, came down as it was flying to Hargeisa, the capital of Somalia’s breakaway territory of Somaliland, the charity said in a statement.
Kiambu County Commissioner Henry Wafula said the four people on board and two people on the ground were killed.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said the plane took off from Wilson Airport at 02:14 PM (1114 GMT) and lost contact with air traffic control three minutes later.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident involving an air ambulance mission,” KCAA said in a statement.
One witness, who asked not to be named, told Reuters she heard a loud sound, then saw a fireball and debris scattered over the neighbourhood.
Unverified videos shared on social media showed firefighters trying to douse burning debris inside what appeared to be a residential compound.
Crashes involving light aircraft are relatively common in eastern Africa.
In April last year, Kenya’s military chief was among 10 people killed when their military helicopter crashed shortly after take-off.

Dr Sofo Tanko Rashid has weighed in the controversy involving Shatta Wale and EOCO
Dr Tanko Rashid-Computer, the Acting CEO of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), has weighed in on the ongoing controversy involving Shatta Wale and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) regarding a car.
This was addressed in an interview with TV3 on the NewDay Show.
Dr Rashid-Computer shared a personal experience, stating that a friend unknowingly drove a stolen vehicle for two years.
“Some vehicles people buy can come from questionable sources, and we need to be careful when purchasing a car. In Shatta’s case, he mentioned that he paid for the car without knowing it was stolen. I like Shatta very much, and, unfortunately, he is in this situation. I heard him explain on live that he bought the car without any knowledge of its background or source; he simply went ahead with the purchase,” he said.
He urged the public to conduct thorough due diligence before making any vehicle purchase, highlighting the importance of verifying a car’s history to avoid similar issues.
“This is a serious matter. I feel sorry for Shatta as he navigates this situation,” he concluded.

John Abdulai Jinapor is the Minister of Energy and Green Transition
The Ministry of Energy has approved a $3.4 billion renewable energy program aimed at transforming Ghana’s energy landscape, with a strong focus on public institutions such as schools, hospitals, and universities.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement on DRE solutions under the LEAF Assessment Project on August 7, 2025, Seth Mahu, a representative of the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, said the program will cover a wide range of clean energy solutions, including off-grid and distributed renewable systems, grid-tied installations, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and electric vehicles (EVs).
According to him, the initiative forms part of a broader government effort to expand access to sustainable and affordable power while easing the burden on the national grid.
President names Ato Forson, Kofi Buah as acting Defence and Environment Ministers
As part of the rollout, over 12,000 renewable energy units have been earmarked for deployment in public secondary schools and hospitals across the country.
He mentioned that the procurement process is almost complete and awaiting final approval from the bank before the bidding documents can be shared.
“The procurement for this is at an advanced stage. We are waiting for the bank’s ‘no objection’ on the bidding documents, after which we will launch the process so these systems can be installed in secondary schools,” he said.
Universities will also benefit through a dedicated initiative known as Government’s Solar, a loan-funded program supported by the German government through KfW Bank.
As part of this plan, the University of Ghana will receive a 3.5-megawatt ground-mounted solar system that will feed directly into the campus power lines.

Nollywood actor, Jim Iyke, has stated that modern feminism has lost its way and now borders on being a crime.
In an interview with The EchoRoom, the actor noted that feminism used to fight for women’s rights but has now turned into something harmful.
The actor said that early feminist movements were necessary because they helped address real issues women faced, such as emotional neglect, patriarchy, and the lack of equal opportunities.
However, he believes the message has now been misunderstood by newer generations and turned into a distorted ideology.

He suggested that modern feminism didn’t develop naturally but is instead pushed by media interests for profit.
Iyke claimed that a popular women’s magazine, though he refused to name it, played a major role in promoting the new version of feminism, not to empower women, but to increase sales.
“I call it a crime, an assault of sorts. The perpetrators of this… obviously, I would not name the magazine… came out with a brilliant campaign to push more papers. Who were their chief readers? Women. So, they devised an ideology that allowed women to challenge the status quo and compete with men in the same space,” he said.
He went on to say that although the original campaign had some good intentions, some women misunderstood the message and turned it into a way of life that teaches them to reject men entirely.
“This was a campaign that went overboard, and certain women bought into the ideology and made it their own. They decided that this whole ideology of ‘we do not need a man, anything a man can do we can do better’… escalated, and blew it out of proportion. Now it has been adopted as a way of living, as a new cultural standard,” he explained.

Rev Dr Stephen Wengam is the General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, President Mahama’s church
General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev Dr Stephen Y Wengam, has confirmed reports on the reason President John Dramani Mahama did not attend the event at Obuasi at the centre of the helicopter crash, which claimed the lives of 8 people, including 2 cabinet ministers.
Speaking to his congregation on Thursday, August 7, 2025, Rev Wengam confirmed that President Mahama was supposed to attend a programme of the church.
He said that the president initially informed him that he was not going to be able to attend the event because he had other engagements, including a trip to Ivory Coast.
The pastor said that he told the person who informed him of the president’s decision not to attend the event that he “would not accept” his decision and asked his prayer team to pray over the matter.
“I called Rev Bawa, and he said, ‘The President said he is not coming,’ and I said, ‘I don’t accept it. Go and mobilise your prayer team and reverse it. Rev Bawa is my witness. Ask him, I told him I don’t accept it,’” he said.
The General Superintendent further stated that the First Lady, Lordina Mahama, also called him to tell him that the president was going to the Ivory Coast, but he rejected it, saying, “No, we are coming for this programme. We have planned for this programme long ago. No way. It was a battle on the phone. I said, ‘Don’t accept it.’”
Helicopter Crash: What eyewitnesses have said so far
He said that President Mahama called him while he was speaking to the First Lady.
Rev Wengam said that Mahama explained the issue to him, and he told him, “Your Excellency, I understand. Your will be done.”
He indicated that later, after his conversation with the president, the First Lady sent him a message which read, “We are coming on Wednesday so that the president can travel on Thursday.”
He added, “So, that was how it was averted. If he had come today, he would have travelled yesterday.”

General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Dr. Stephen Y. Wengam, has revealed why President John Dramani Mahama was not on board the helicopter that crashed yesterday, killing two ministers and six others en route to an event in Obuasi.
The Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau (AIB Ghana) has expressed deep sorrow over the fatal helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight high-profile individuals on Wednesday, August 6, near Adansi Brofoyedru in the Ashanti Region.
In a statement issued Thursday August 7, 2025, the Bureau described the crash as a “national tragedy” and extended its condolences to the bereaved families, the Government of Ghana, the Ghana Armed Forces, and the entire nation.
“It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that I extend, on behalf of AIB Ghana, our deepest condolences to the bereaved families…and the entire nation. This devastating accident has shaken the very foundations of our institutions,” Acting Commissioner of AIB Ghana, John Wumborti said.
The victims of the crash were named as:

• Samuel Aboagye – Deputy Director-General, NADMO
• Sqn. Leader Peter Baafemi Anala – Pilot
• Flying Officer Manin Twum Ampadu – Co-Pilot
• Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah – Crew Member
“These were men of service, courage, and integrity, dedicated to the peace, safety, and development of our beloved country,” the Bureau’s leadership stated.
The officials were reportedly on a special mission linked to anti-illegal mining enforcement when the helicopter went down in a forested area. Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing, led by AIB Ghana in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces and international aviation partners.
“While no words can adequately ease the grief being experienced, we stand in solemn solidarity with every family affected,” the statement added.
AIB Ghana emphasised the legacy of public service and patriotism the deceased have left behind.
“May their legacy of dedication and patriotism endure in the hearts of all Ghanaians,” the Bureau concluded.
The tragic loss has triggered an outpouring of national grief, with tributes continuing to flow from across political, civil, and diplomatic circles.
A period of national mourning has been declared, and flags are being flown at half-mast in honour of the victims.

Adrian de Wet says he was under duress to feed the two women to pigs
South Africa’s state prosecutor has officially withdrawn charges against one of the farm workers accused of killing two black woman and feeding their bodies to pigs.
Adrian de Wet was one of three men facing murder charges after Maria Makgato, 45, and Lucia Ndlovu, 34, were killed while allegedly looking for food on a pig farm near Polokwane in South Africa’s northern Limpopo province last year.
Their bodies were then alleged to have been given to the animals in an apparent attempt to dispose of the evidence.
Mr De Wet, 20, turned state witness when the trial started on Monday and says farm owner Zachariah Johannes Olivier shot and killed the two women.
Mr De Wet, a supervisor on the farm, will testify that he was under duress when he was forced to throw their bodies into the pig enclosure, according to both the prosecution and his lawyer.
William Musora, 50, another farm worker, is the third accused. He and Mr Olivier, 60, are yet to enter a plea and remain behind bars.
Mr De Wet’s lawyers say he has truthfully disclosed what transpired on the night Ms Makgato and Ms Ndlovu were killed in August 2024.
Shortly after court adjourned on Wednesday, he walked out of the court as a free man and was whisked away by his lawyers, while Ms Makgato’s brother Walter Makgato sobbed outside the court building.
He told the BBC that the release of one of the men allegedly involved in the killing of his sister means justice will not be served.
Mr De Wet will be taken into protective custody until the end of the trial.
The case has caused widespread outrage across South Africa which has exacerbated racial tension between black and white people in the country.
This is especially rife in rural areas of the country, despite the end of the racist system of apartheid 30 years ago.
Most private farmland remains in the hands of the white minority, while most farm workers are black and poorly paid, fuelling resentment among the black population, while many white farmers complain of high crime rates.
In what many are calling a miraculous twist of fate, GoldBod CEO and National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, narrowly escaped being involved in the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of key government officials earlier this week.
According to emerging reports, Sammy Gyamfi was initially scheduled to be part of the official delegation aboard the ill-fated flight. The helicopter, which went down during a government assignment in the northern region, resulted in the loss of several high-profile public figures, including ministers of state. The nation remains in mourning following the devastating incident.
In a video statement released online, Sammy Gyamfi shared chilling details of how he missed the flight at the last minute. Although he was part of the original travel plans, unforeseen changes led to his absence on the aircraft. The GoldBod boss did not elaborate on the exact reason he was unable to join the flight but described it as “nothing short of divine intervention.”
“Luck was really on my side,” he remarked emotionally in the video. “I still can’t believe I could have been on that helicopter. I am grateful to be alive, but deeply heartbroken over the loss of my colleagues and friends.”
The image accompanying the video, posted on Sammy Gyamfi’s official Facebook page, shows a somber Gyamfi reflecting on the tragedy.
Public reactions have been filled with both relief and sorrow—relief that Sammy Gyamfi escaped the fatal crash, and sorrow for those who didn’t. Tributes continue to pour in for the deceased, as investigations into the cause of the crash are underway.
Sammy Gyamfi has pledged his full support for the families of the victims and has called for national unity and reflection during this difficult time.
Dr Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, revealed the unsettling sequence of events leading to the tragic death of Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, in a helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofuom as per reports from ModernGhana.
Dr Amoakohene disclosed that Dr Murtala originally intended to travel to Kumasi via a chartered flight, with plans to continue his journey to Obuasi for the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP).
The Minister had asked Amoakohene to arrange for a vehicle to pick him up at the Prempeh International Airport in Kumasi for the trip.
However, by 9 AM the following morning, Amoakohene received troubling news from the driver.
The driver reported that he had not heard from Dr Murtala, despite the earlier arrangements.
Amoakohene, who had assumed that Dr Murtala might be in the air, tried calling, only to later learn that the Minister had altered his plans. Instead of taking the flight, he had decided to join the helicopter.
The minister described the heartbreaking moment when he learned of the crash, reflecting on his final interaction with Dr Murtala.
“His first words were that he admired my energy and was proud of me,” Amoakohene recalled. “We both laughed, and then he asked me to arrange for a vehicle to pick him up.”
The sudden loss has left the Ashanti Regional Minister deeply shaken. “We have lost him in this tragic crash, and seeing him lifeless this afternoon broke my heart painfully,” he added.
“Rest well, Hon Murtala. Your words of encouragement will forever remain with me.”
Ghanaians have been urged to ensure that the recommendations from the ongoing Constitution Review Committee (CRC) are implemented after the report is presented to President John Dramani Mahama.
Members of the committee gave this advice during a public engagement in the Bono Region, where they collected views on the review of the 1992 Constitution after 33 years of its operation in the current democratic dispensation.
According to Prof. Henry Kwesi Prempeh, Chairman of the eight-member committee, the Bono Region engagement constitutes the ninth zonal engagement. He explained that the final regional engagement would be held in the Ashanti Region, followed by a meeting with the National House of Chiefs, the last of the interest groups to be consulted.
Addressing a cross-section of the public, including market women, security organisations, transport operators, chiefs, queen mothers, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), political party members, students, government workers, and private workers, Prof. Prempeh emphasised the need to review the 1992 Constitution due to various development changes and challenges that have arisen during its implementation.
He cited instances such as a hung Parliament, attempted constitutional amendments, the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), and the suspension of the Chief Justice, among others.
“All these things have happened to us as a country, and there’s a need to review the Constitution,” he said.
After compiling views from meetings with interest groups and key personalities, the committee will present its report to President Mahama.
“We’re not going to provide recommendations that will worsen the people’s problems but rather correct issues like local government administration, mineral resource management, and community involvement to prevent galamsey,” he assured.
The Chairman noted that politicians may not be pleased with some of the committee’s recommendations, as they will impact their operations. Alhaji Ibrahim Tanko Amidu, a committee member, advised the Ghanaian public to mobilise and apply pressure to ensure the recommendations are implemented, as politicians are likely to resist them.
Prof. Kwame Karikari, another committee member, emphasised the need for citizens to hold politicians accountable and ensure they prioritise the people’s interests. “We’re just servants of the government, and once we present our report, our work is done. We’re all Ghanaians who share the same pains. It’s up to us to make sure politicians do what we want, so the country works for all of us,” he advocated.
During their nationwide engagement, Prof. Karikari lamented the poor state of the road network, questioning the allocation of borrowed funds. “From Tamale to Wa, Accra to Ho, Cape Coast to Takoradi, you ask yourself what happened to all the borrowed money,” he rhetorically asked, adding, “Politicians are not better than us.”
