Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has drawn widespread criticism for attending the presidential inauguration in Ghana as her city faced serious issues. The timing of her travel has sparked considerable outrage, with many questioning her priorities amid increasing issues at home.

Mayor Bass, who has advocated for improved international relations and cultural links with Africa, was in Ghana to attend President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s swearing-in ceremony.

While her attendance was intended to reinforce the historical connection between the African diaspora and the continent, many Los Angeles residents believe her absence at a vital time for the city was improper.

The criticism originates from the catastrophic situation in Los Angeles, where a succession of wildfires and continued homelessness have left locals feeling uneasy. Wildfires raged through the city during her journey, damaging homes and displacing residents. Residents who felt abandoned during their time of need expressed their frustration on social media networks.

“While our city burns—literally—our mayor is halfway across the world. “How does this make sense?” a resident tweeted. Others contended that, while foreign ties are vital, the mayor’s first responsibility is to those who elected her.

Mayor Bass supporters have justified her travel, underlining the importance of international diplomacy. They claim that her presence at the inauguration emphasizes Los Angeles’ worldwide position and stimulates economic and cultural collaborations that will benefit the city in the long term.

A representative for the mayor’s office indicated that she maintained constant communication with local officials throughout her trip and was actively involved in coordinating crisis responses.

Despite the assurances, the backlash highlights the delicate balance that public leaders must strike between local responsibilities and global commitments. As Los Angeles continues to face challenges, the mayor’s actions will surely come under examination.

Austrian woman kidnapped by unknown assailants in Niger

The Austrian foreign ministry says a female citizen has been taken by unknown assailants in the military-ran West African country, Niger.

It confirmed the incident to AFP and said they were aware of the “possible kidnapping of an Austrian woman” in Agadez which is 900 km (559 miles) from the capital Niamey.

The woman was reportedly forced into a 4×4 vehicle by unidentified individuals in the Fada district, Agadez, on the edge of the Sahara Desert, reported Reuters news agency.

The victim, named Eva Gretzmacher, is a development worker in her mid-70s and had lived in Niger for over two decades, according to the local media site, Air Info Agadez.

Niger has not yet commented on the incident.

Air Info reported kidnappers showed up at Ms Gretzmacher’s house with a gun and forced their way in. They did not take anything else, reports said.

Ms Gretzmacher is said to have run projects in the areas of education, health, women’s empowerment and culture.

The Austrian foreign ministry said they are working with the EU delegation and authorities on the ground.

Niger has been battling an Islamist insurgency for years.

The military junta is under pressure for failing to curb militant attacks, one of its justifications for deposing democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum in July 2023.

Niger, along with its neighbours Mali and Burkina Faso, is grappling with attacks from groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS.

Since the coup, Niger has urged France and other Western powers to withdraw their military bases and formed a security alliance with junta-led neighbours Mali and Burkina Faso.

Meghan Netflix show delayed over LA wildfires

The Duchess of Sussex’s new Netflix show has been postponed until March due to the Los Angeles wildfires, the streaming giant has announced.

The lifestyle series, which was filmed in southern California, had been due to premiere on Wednesday.

Netflix said it had offered its “full support” to Meghan’s request to delay the release.

Wildfires have raged through the California city since Tuesday, killing at least 16 people and forcing hundreds of thousands to evacuate their homes.

In a statement, Netflix described the upcoming programme as a “heartfelt tribute to the beauty of Southern California”, adding that it was moving the premiere of With Love, Meghan over the “ongoing devastation” caused by the fires.

“I’m thankful to my partners at Netflix for supporting me in delaying the launch, as we focus on the needs of those impacted by the wildfires in my home state of California,” the duchess said.

The programme filmed in the southern California town of Montecito, will now air on 4 March, Netflix said.

With Love, Meghan includes eight 30-minute episodes featuring appearances from celebrities such as actress Mindy Kaling and former Suits star Abigail Spencer.

In the trailer released earlier this month, Meghan garnishes a cake with raspberries and harvests honey in California, where she lives with her husband Prince Harry and two children.

On Friday, Prince Harry and Meghan were seen hugging residents in the devastated area of Pasadena in the wake of the worst wildfires LA has ever seen.

Following his quotation from a Freemasons document at the Induction and Orientation Programme for Members of the Ninth Parliament (Cohort 1) on Saturday, January 11, 2025, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader of Parliament, has sparked intense debate. In order to train new and returning Members of Parliament for successful governance, the event took an intriguing turn when the Minority Leader emphasized equality, humility, and unity by including Freemasonry values.

“We have all sprung from the same stock, partakers of the same nature, and sharers in the same hope,” Afenyo-Markin said, quoting the second-degree working tools of the Freemasons. Furthermore, even while differences between males are essential to maintaining subordination, no circumstance should ever make you feel better than another. “As the time will come, the wisest of men knows not how soon, when all distinctions, save those of goodness and virtue, shall cease and death, the grand leveler of all human greatness, shall reduce us to the same state,” he added, emphasizing the fleeting nature of power and the ultimate equality of all humans in death. Even though his address was well received at the ceremony, social media was ablaze with conflicting responses. A segment

Comparing the absence of criticism directed at NPP member Afenyo-Markin to the outrage Otumfuo Osei Tutu II received when he praised Freemasonry, some accused the public of acting unfairly. Since he is an NPP member, no one is talking about it, yet we were scolding Otumfuo harshly when he recognized Freemasonry, a user said. An further user said, “Radio stations in the Ashanti region would have been on fire Monday morning if an NDC MP had quoted from that Freemasons’ book.” Some commended the quote’s wisdom despite the critiques. As one user put it, “I don’t like Freemasonry, but you have to admit that was some great piece of wise words.” Given that many people in Ghana associate Freemasonry with secrecy and controversy, the episode highlights how sensitive the organization is there.

President Mahama hints at completion of National Cathedral without State funds

President John Mahama has announced that his administration will reassess the controversial National Cathedral project, which has been marred by controversy under the previous administration.

According to Mr Mahama, his administration will review the cost of the entire project and seek funding for its construction.

“This project must be completed at a reasonable cost. Given the current circumstances that Ghana is facing, it makes no sense to undertake such a project at a whooping sum of $400 million. I am informed that the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja, which serves all Christian denominations in Nigeria, was built at a cost of $30 million. I believe we can achieve this project at a much more reasonable figure, and together, we can raise the necessary funds,” he said.

The president, speaking at his first National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service in Accra on Sunday, January 12, added that if his government decides to continue the project, the location will also be reconsidered.

“Such a reconsideration of this project might even include changing the current site that was chosen for the project,” he said.

Mr Mahama further emphasised that state funds would not be used for the project, stating, “On the future of the project, the Cathedral, I believe that all of us, as Christians, must forge a consensus on how to achieve this project without recourse to public funds.”

The construction of the Cathedral was started by President Akufo-Addo to fulfill a promise he claims to have made to God before winning the 2016 elections.

He assured Ghanaians that it would not be funded with public money, but it later emerged that the state, through the then Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, had allocated public funds for its construction.

The project faced further setbacks when some members of the Board of Trustees, who were men of faith, were accused of inappropriate conduct, leading to delays in the completion of the building, which is located in the heart of Accra.

Amidst the controversies, the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) investigated the matter and recommended that the Auditor-General conduct a forensic audit to determine what went wrong and, if necessary, prosecute those found to be responsible for any wrongdoing.
