‘Invest in hard times’ – Rev Eastwood cites Man United’s $201m spending as lesson

The Founder of Fountain Gate Chapel, Reverend Eastwood Anaba, has used Premier League giants Manchester United’s spending in the 2025 transfer season to encourage Christians to be generous.

He noted that despite Manchester United’s underwhelming performance in the 2024/2025 season, finishing 15th in the Premier League, the club still invested heavily ahead of the new campaign.

The clergyman pointed out that the Red Devils’ ability to spend about $201 million on new players to strengthen their squad is a reminder that people should be willing to invest even in challenging times.

“Manchester United, which is struggling, ranked 15th, has just spent $201 million on footballers. Because Manchester United can’t die like that, money has made them resilient,” he said, as shared on his X page on August 10, 2025.

Rev Anaba used the scenario to admonish Christians to be financially generous when it comes to church activities to reap benefits.

He warned that churches will soon collapse if people don’t pay offerings and invest when needed.

“If we don’t recover from our financial slumber, many of our churches will die. When a pastor holds a meeting at a convention center or elsewhere and doesn’t receive an offering, do you see how packed the place is? They say, ‘Oh, they did the meeting without receiving an offering.’

“They did the meeting, but someone behind the scenes paid for it. Someone gave $300,000; someone gave $1,000. May you be among those who support behind the scenes and make things happen,” he added.

Prophecies on national security must be coordinated – Adawudu

0

Member of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) legal and communications team, Victor Kwadjoga Adawudu, has called for a coordinated approach to handling prophecies that touch on matters of national security, urging religious leaders to exercise wisdom and responsibility in delivering such revelations.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, August 11, he acknowledged the role of prophets in offering spiritual direction but warned against the influence of false prophecies, especially in moments of national distress.

“In as much as prophets give direction, we also know that there are some false prophets; that is why we need to sanitise. I am happy that it is being coordinated now, and once it is coordinated, what needs to be done to avert it will be done,” he said.

His comments come after the Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, urged religious leaders to formally submit any prophecy or spiritual insight of national significance for urgent review.

Mr. Adawudu also expressed confidence in the military and the presidency to investigate and address all concerns arising from the recent helicopter crash, which has sparked a wave of public speculation.

“I have full trust in the military and the presidency, and so they will want to find out and bring closure. Everybody should be rest assured that all issues that are being raised will be looked at, and I am sure that if there is need for collaboration, government will do that,” he assured.

The call for coordination follows a flurry of prophetic declarations after the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District, which claimed the lives of eight people, including top government officials and military personnel.

The August 6 crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region claimed the lives of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation; Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)

Also on board were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, all of whom perished.

Dr. Murtala Muhammed and Muniru Mohammed have since been buried, with an inter-denominational state funeral for all the victims set for Friday, August 15, at the Black Star Square.

Meanwhile the  Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations have urged  religious leaders to formally submit any prophecy or spiritual insight of national significance for urgent review.

Ghana Sets Stage for Africa’s US$40 Trillion Sustainability Push

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Ghana will host the first major stakeholder meeting for the Sixth Africa Sustainability Report and Think Energy SDGs Awards on August 28 in Accra.

The gathering, spearheaded by the Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability alongside the newly formed Association of African Sustainability Practitioners (AASuP), aims to turbocharge the continent’s race against the 2030 SDG deadline.

Policymakers, bankers, energy executives, and global agencies will draft Africa’s blueprint for November’s COP30 in Brazil. Central to talks: unlocking a slice of the world’s $40 trillion sustainable finance pool. “Africa’s struggled to access these funds due to capacity gaps,” admits an organizer. “We’re creating frameworks to turn pledges into bankable projects.”

The event formally launches AASuP—Africa’s largest sustainability practitioner network—to bridge the divide between climate policies and on-ground implementation. Its flagship program will retool skills across ministries, universities, and private firms, addressing what insiders call a “critical disconnect” in climate action.

Awards will spotlight standout SDG contributions, but the real prize is tangible progress. As one participant notes, “Talk won’t cool the planet. We need deals that deliver clean energy and jobs.”

The Accra talks set the tone for October’s flagship report and awards at Movenpick Hotel—where Africa’s green ambition meets accountability.

Salah (L) questioned UEFA over Suleiman's death Salah (L) questioned UEFA over Suleiman’s death

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has come under fire from Israeli netizens after questioning UEFA’s tribute to Palestinian football legend Suleiman al-Obeid, who was reportedly killed by Israeli forces while seeking humanitarian aid in Gaza.

UEFA posted on X mourning Obeid, known as the “Palestinian Pele”, describing him as “a talent who gave hope to countless children.”

Salah responded with a pointed question: “Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?”

According to the Palestine Football Association (PFA), Obeid, 41, was fatally shot in the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, as he queued for aid.

He played 24 matches for Palestine, scored over 100 career goals with local clubs, and leaves behind a wife and five children.

Israeli settlers and users accused Salah of implying that Israel was responsible for Obeid’s death, and expressed outrage that he did not issue a similar statement when Israeli footballer Lior Asulin was killed during the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attacks.

Some demanded UEFA post a tribute to Asulin as it did for Obeid.

The backlash comes amid Salah’s history of advocating for Gaza; in October 2023, he urged world leaders to ensure humanitarian aid reached civilians to “prevent further slaughter of innocent souls.”

Israeli military spokesperson Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani responded to Salah on X, claiming no initial records of Obeid’s death existed and requesting more details.

The PFA says Obeid’s killing raises the toll of Palestinian athletes lost in the ongoing conflict to 662.

Ivory Coast protesters demand inclusion of opposition leaders in presidential race

Waving Ivory Coast’s national flag, protesters brandish a banner of PPA-CI leader Laurent Gbagbo Waving Ivory Coast’s national flag, protesters brandish a banner of PPA-CI leader Laurent Gbagbo

Thousands flooded the streets of Abidjan on Saturday, rallying against the exclusion of key opposition figures from Ivory Coast’s October presidential election.

The demonstration, according to an AP report, began in Yopougon, one of the capital’s most crowded suburbs, with banners declaring, “Enough is enough!” and “No true democracy without true justice.” Protesters voiced outrage over the electoral commission’s earlier decision to bar four major opposition leaders, among them former President Laurent Gbagbo and ex-Credit Suisse CEO Tidjane Thiam, from the race.

Gbagbo and Thiam, who formed an alliance earlier this year to challenge 83-year-old President Alassane Ouattara, have become the rallying point for dissent. “We are millions saying YES to Gbagbo and Thiam,” read another placard held high in the crowd.

'We Need A Quiet Winner, Not A Loud Loser’ – Bawumia’s Camp Fires Back At ‘Weak’ Claims

0

Spokesperson for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2024 presidential campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has hit back at claims from Kennedy Agyapong’s camp, revealing that the NPP vice-presidential candidate is “too weak” to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2028 as reported by ModernGhana.

This response follows comments from Agyapong’s campaign spokesperson, Kwasi Kwarteng, who argued that Bawumia’s performance in the 2024 elections did not warrant a second chance as the party’s flagbearer.

Kwarteng, in a social media post on August 10, suggested that Bawumia’s 2024 election results a total of 4.65 million votes were insufficient, citing the NPP’s historical preference for fresh candidates.

He pointed out that the party has historically favored candidates whose first attempts brought in stronger support.

Miracles Aboagye swiftly responded, calling these claims “a cherry-picked, context-free distortion of facts.”

He contended that Dr. Bawumia’s performance should not be judged by mere numbers but by the extraordinary political and economic challenges that shaped the 2024 election.

According to Aboagye, Bawumia’s ability to secure nearly 4.7 million votes in the face of adversity speaks to his electability and resilience. “The NPP rewards resilience, not just raw numbers,” Aboagye added.

Aboagye also took aim at Agyapong’s campaign strategy, describing the Member of Parliament for Assin Central as “a loose cannon” whose approach is based on “insults and threats.”

He warned that Agyapong’s combative style could harm the party’s chances in the 2028 election, stressing that a unifying leader is essential.

The NPP is set to elect their flagbearer for 2028 on January 31, 2026.

Lovely Gown Designs Fashionable Moms Can Sew With Any Fabric

0

Mummy-inspired fashion is no longer just a quirky nod to history or Halloween—it has become a striking trend in contemporary haute couture. Today’s designers are reimagining the mystique and allure of ancient mummies with modern flair, resulting in captivating gown styles that are both edgy and elegant. Fortunately, you don’t have to be wrapped in actual bandages to channel this aesthetic. The key lies in subtle design elements—like draping, layering, and texture—that evoke the timeless essence of the mummy look.

Whether you’re headed to a glamorous gala, a red carpet event, or simply want to elevate your evening wardrobe, mummy-inspired gowns offer a unique blend of drama and sophistication. These gowns often feature flowing fabrics such as chiffon, satin, or organza, which create soft yet structured silhouettes reminiscent of ancient wraps.

For a bold statement, opt for a full-length gown with detailed pleating or ruched fabric that mimics the intricate wrapping of a mummy. Add some edge by pairing it with chunky metallic jewelry, a bold clutch, and strappy heels. If you prefer a more relaxed interpretation, consider a midi dress with asymmetrical hemlines, uneven textures, or layered panels that still nod to the theme without overwhelming the look.

What makes mummy-inspired gowns truly captivating is their ability to balance eerie elegance with modern sensuality. Far from being outdated, these designs speak to a fearless sense of style that dares to be different.

So, if you’re looking to stand out and embrace a fashion-forward approach, consider stepping into the world of mummy-inspired gowns.

My Prophecy About Black Sherif Hasn’t Changed-Prophet

0

Black Sherif

One Prophet Ogya has maintained that his prophecy about musician Black Sherif that he would no longer produce hit songs remains valid.

On December 31, 2024, during a watch night service, the prophet told his congregation that God had revealed to him that Black Sherif’s music career would face a decline due to opposition from within the music industry.

In the months that followed, however, Black Sherif released a hit single and his Iron Boy album, which has topped charts across streaming platforms and gained widespread popularity both in Ghana and abroad.

Speaking on radio on Friday, Prophet Ogya said the prophecy was “still hanging in the air” despite the artiste’s current success. He explained that some prophecies take time to manifest and that prophets often face mockery or disrespect when predictions are not immediately fulfilled.

He noted that many people have labelled him a fake prophet because Black Sherif’s career appears to be flourishing. Nonetheless, he insists that something will eventually happen to make the musician “unheard of” unless he seeks guidance from powerful men of God.

“The reason some preachers avoid sharing certain prophecies is that, if there’s an imminent incident they could pray against, many Ghanaians, especially the youth do not respect the prophetic ministry. My prophecy about Black Sherif has not changed; it is still in place. I advised him that if he wanted to remain popular, he should seek spiritual guidance,” the Prophet stated

NPP to abstain from Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election

0

Accra, Aug. 11, GNA – The New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not participate in the Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election for a replacement of the late Dr Murtala Muhammad, the Member of Parliament (MP) of the Constituency.

Dr Muhammad was among the eight Ghanaians who lost their lives in the tragic helicopter crash at Adansi in the Ashanti Region last Wednesday, while on their way for a national assignment at Obuasi on August 6, 2025.

A statement issued and signed by Mr Justin Kodua Frimpong, the General Secretary, NPP, said the decision was taken at a National Steering Committee meeting held on Monday, August 11.

The statement said the Party considered many factors, including the circumstances under which the seat became vacant and that it would be inhumane to participate in the election.

“The NPP is of the belief that it would be inhumane and unconscionable to subject the nation to a competitive process in search of a replacement for the departed MP,” it said.

“The Party believes that the tension and acrimony often associated with the conduct of by-elections in the country should be avoided.”

The NPP said the greatest tribute that the Party and the rest of the nation could pay in honour of the departed was not only to win the fight against illegal mining but also to ensure a smooth and peaceful replacement for the good people of Tamale Central.

“Consequently, the NPP, hereby, announces that when the Electoral Commission of Ghana opens nominations for the Tamale Central by-election in line with Article 12 (5) of Ghana’s Constitution, the Party will, in accord with the national interest, not take part in the contest,” the statement said.

NPP Party Youth Executives pick flagbearer forms for Bryan Acheampong

0

Accra, Aug. 11, GNA – A group of young party executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has picked up nomination forms on behalf of Dr Bryan Acheampong,  the former Minister of Agriculture, for him to contest in the  flagbearership race.

The supporters, youthful party executives, visited the party’s national headquarters in Accra to complete the formalities.

They later proceeded to present the forms to former Member of Parliament for Tema West and Campaign Manager for the Dr Acheampong Campaign, Mr Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah.

Mr Ahenkorah, who received the forms at the Bryan Acheampong campaign office, described the gesture as a “significant display of trust and commitment to Dr Acheampong’s leadership ambitions,” according to a statement issued to the Ghana News Agency, on Monday.

“This is not just about picking forms; it is about the future of the NPP and the future of Ghana,” he told the group.

“When the youth take this initiative, it shows that they believe in a leader who can unite our party, deliver on his promises, and secure our electoral victory in 2028.”

He thanked them for the gesture and emphasised that the campaign would focus on unity, competence, and delivering results for both party and country.

Some members of the group said they were inspired by Dr Acheampong’s achievements in public service, citing his work in the agriculture sector and his reputation for discipline and effective leadership.

Several prominent figures are expected to join the contest, setting the stage for an intense campaign in the months ahead.

“Party insiders say the move by the youth helps Dr Acheampong build early momentum, especially among grassroots members who play a decisive role in internal elections,” the statement said.

“Political observers also note that such grassroots mobilisation often sends a strong signal of a candidate’s organisational strength and appeal within the party base.”

The NPP opened nominations for the 2026 presidential primaries on July 29, 2025 and the process is set to close on August 28, 2025.

Aspirants seeking to lead the Party for the 2028 Presidential Election are required to pay a fee of GHS100,000 for the forms and pay GHS500,000 to file their nominations.

Ghana Insurers Association supports Ayawaso East Municipality

0

The Ghana Insurers Association (GIA) has lent a helping hand to the Ayawaso East Municipality in the Greater Accra Region by donating items worth thousands of Ghana cedis.

The items included two tricycles that will be instrumental in addressing the municipality’s sanitation challenges.

To address these pressing sanitation challenges, including indiscriminate dumping and littering, which contribute to environmental pollution and health risks, as well as insufficient waste collection and disposal facilities, the GIA, as part of its corporate social responsibility to mark the 2025 Insurance Awareness Month Celebrations, expressed their support to the community in which they operate.

The Municipal Chief Executive of the Ayawaso East Municipality, Abdul Ganiyu Ibrahim, expressed his gratitude to the GIA for their thoughtful gesture in helping to improve sanitation in the area.

He explained that the municipality was currently facing difficulties in maintaining clean frontages and drainage systems, and these tricycles will be valuable assets to charting this worthy cause.

He also highlighted the municipality’s active engagement in various initiatives to address sanitation issues, such as stakeholder consultations, clean-up exercises, and educational programs.

These efforts aim at enhancing waste management, reducing health risks associated with poor sanitation, and creating a cleaner environment for residents.

Accra, the capital city of Ghana, is grappling with significant waste management challenges due to rapid urbanization, population growth, and inadequate infrastructure. These issues have led to environmental degradation, health hazards, and pollution.

A Member of the GIA Board and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Serene Insurance Company Ltd., Mercy Naa Koshie Boampong, emphasized the importance of educating the general public about their rights and expectations when dealing with insurance companies.

She explained that the GIA aimed at addressing the issue of clients not knowing their rights, which often leads to disputes during claims handling processes.

She added that the Association had dedicated a specific period to educate the public about real insurance issues and improve their understanding.

Addressing public perception and trust issues, Mrs Boampong clarified that the main issue is not necessarily about trust but rather a lack of knowledge about the dos and don’ts of insurance.

This is why the GIA has dedicated a whole month to educating the general public on matters of insurance.

Istanbul

To bolster international commerce and elevate tourism, Access Bank Ghana, in partnership with Litina Travel & Tour, will guide a cohort of Ghanaian enterprises to Istanbul, Turkey, from August 11 to 18, 2025. This trade delegation, composed of senior executives and sectoral leaders, intends to identify pathways for reinforced bilateral cooperation and market penetration.

Central to the mission is participation in the World Construction Industry (WCI) Forum, convening decision-makers from Ghana, Turkey, and multiple global trade networks. Participants will engage in structured B2B dialogues, tour Turkish industrial clusters, and attend a series of targeted events designed to build lasting partnerships. While the entire Ghanaian economy stands to gain, the tourism subsector will receive sustained emphasis, positioning local firms to harness Istanbul’s appeal and Turkey’s architectural expertise for reciprocal market gains.

Exploring Key Sectors: Construction, Tourism, and Beyond

The delegation will explore key sectors including construction, building materials, agricultural products, machinery, oil and gas, and more. However, the program’s emphasis on tourism is pivotal, as the mission offers Ghanaian entrepreneurs a unique opportunity to connect with Turkish counterparts and explore potential partnerships in the rapidly growing travel and hospitality sectors.

The delegation will visit some of Istanbul’s iconic landmarks and renowned industrial zones, allowing delegates to understand better how Turkey’s tourism infrastructure has evolved and the potential for collaboration in this booming industry. Turkey’s well-established tourism sector is a significant driver of its economy, and the goal is for Ghanaian businesses to draw inspiration and learn from their Turkish counterparts to boost the local tourism industry.

Networking Events and Cultural Exchange

Apart from business-oriented activities, the mission is designed to foster personal connections. Delegates will enjoy cultural experiences such as the famous Istanbul shopping tour and a Bosphorus yacht tour, providing a chance to network in informal settings while exploring one of the most vibrant cities in the world. These activities are not only aimed at enhancing business relationships but also at promoting cultural tourism and strengthening the ties between Ghana and Turkey.

By merging business development with tourism exploration, the mission offers a comprehensive approach to expanding trade opportunities, particularly for businesses in sectors like travel, hospitality, and tourism.

Access Bank’s Role in Supporting Ghanaian Entrepreneurs

Access Bank Ghana is at the forefront of this mission, aiming to connect local entrepreneurs, especially women in business, to international markets and global trade opportunities. The initiative is an extension of the bank’s broader goal to diversify Ghana’s economy and position its local businesses in a competitive global market.

Through these efforts, Access Bank provides its clients with access to high-value partnerships, innovative technologies, and global market trends, while contributing to the promotion of Ghana as an emerging tourism destination.

Impact on the Tourism Sector

This trade mission emphasises the importance of tourism as a key sector in Ghana’s economic growth. With the rise in international travel and business exchanges, such initiatives can drive more inbound tourism to Ghana, creating new opportunities for hospitality businesses and promoting the country as a must-visit destination in West Africa.

As international travel continues to evolve, the connections made through this mission could pave the way for future collaborations, bringing more visitors to Ghana and strengthening tourism infrastructure. In turn, this would create a ripple effect, boosting other sectors of the economy, from hospitality to local agriculture and crafts.

Future Outlook

The diplomatic visit to Istanbul is projected to yield enduring benefits for Ghana’s commerce and tourism industries. Concentrating on sustainable expansion in these sectors, the mission lays the groundwork for future delegations to partner nations on every continent. The tangible outcomes anticipated here will reinforce Ghana’s standing abroad, while firmly establishing the country among the most viable players in the contemporary global tourism arena.

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has secured convictions against five individuals for various immigration offences.

Two Nigerian nationals — John Moore, 20, and Charles Bruce, 21 — were each sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment (to run concurrently) after being found guilty of offences linked to human trafficking and romance scamming. Their conviction followed the rescue and repatriation of two victims, Joseph Atungwa and Cletus Tom Emmanuel, who had been lured into Ghana under the promise of lucrative employment by a kingpin, only to be handed over to the convicts for training in online fraud. The rescue, arrest, and investigation were carried out by the Ashaiman Immigration Command.

In a related development, three foreign nationals — Yusuf Mohammed, 26, a Nigerian radiographer; Mohammed Ogbona, 32, a Nigerian factory hand; and Nalvine Anne Fonjong, 31, a Cameroonian trader — were arrested at the Tema Passport Application Centre for falsifying information to acquire Ghanaian birth certificates and identity cards in an attempt to obtain Ghanaian passports. They were convicted by the Tema District Court and sentenced to 10 years, 15 years, and six months’ imprisonment respectively.

The GIS has reminded all foreign nationals in the country that there are legal ways of obtaining Ghanaian citizenship. Those who attempt to use unlawful means to secure Ghanaian citizenship will therefore be arrested and made to face the full rigors of the law, the Ghana Immigration Service has warned. Foreign nationals who are desirous of obtaining citizenship should contact the nearest immigration office for such assistance, the GIS added.

The GIS reiterated its commitment to rigorously enforce the country’s immigration laws in the interest of national security and development.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that the party will not partake in the Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election to elect a replacement for the late Dr Murtala Mohammed, Member of Parliament (MP) for the Constituency, who was among the eight (8) who lost their lives in service of the Republic in the helicopter crash that occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025,.

The decision was taken by the Party at a National Steering Committee meeting held on Monday, August 11, 2025, at the Party Headquarters in Accra, under Article 10(10)(1) of the Party Constitution

In a press statement issued by the party’s General Secretary, Mr Justin Kodua Frimpong said that in arriving at the decision, the Party considered many factors, including the circumstances under which the Tamale Central seat has become vacant and the possibility of a further polarisation of the country at this critical time.

“The NPP believes that it would be inhumane and unconscionable to subject the nation to a competitive process in search of a replacement for the departed MP. The Party believes that the tension and acrimony often associated with the conduct of by-elections in the country should be avoided.

It is the considered view of the Party that the greatest tribute that the NPP and the rest of the nation can pay in honour of the departed, is not only to win the fight against Galamsey but also to ensure a smooth and peaceful replacement for the good people of Tamale Central, ” it said.

It said consequently, the NPP hereby announces that when the Electoral Commission of Ghana opens nominations for the Tamale Central by-election in line with Article 112 (5) of Ghana’s Constitution, the Party would, in accord with the national interest, not take part in the contest.

Rejecting the Politics of Insults: A call for respectful discourse in Ghana

0

In recent times, insults have unfortunately become a common feature in Ghana’s political and governance landscape, and this regrettable phenomenon permeates both traditional and social media platforms. The situation has worsened to the extent that the elderly, clergy, traditional rulers and other respected figures in society are targeted incessantly.

The advent of social media has amplified this trend as it provides a platform for all manner of individuals, particularly the youth, to engage in unrestrained verbal attacks, intemperate vituperations and vitriolic abuses. Whilst criticism is an essential part of democracy and nation-building, the use of insults erodes the moral fabric of society and undermines national cohesion. No nation in history has been built on the foundation of insults, and Ghana must not chart that path.

History shows that the most advanced countries, such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan and others were not built through personal attacks or verbal abuses. Their progress came from constructive dialogue, mutual respect and a collective vision for national growth. Ghana, aspiring to achieve similar heights, must therefore abandon the culture of insults in the political discourse. Insults do not solve problems, create policies, or drive development; they only deepen divisions, incite hatred and may sometimes distract people from the pressing issues that require national attention.

The issue becomes more worrying when the targets of these insults are people of high standing in society; traditional rulers, clergy, statesmen and national leaders. In Ghanaian tradition, certain figures are accorded high respect because they serve as unifying forces in times of crisis. When these individuals are consistently insulted, they risk losing the reverence they need to mediate in national matters. If there were to be a serious conflict or national unrest, such individuals might be called upon to intervene. However, insults and public ridicule could weaken their moral authority and make them ineffective in resolving disputes.

Nation-building thrives when there are individuals whose words carry weight and whose presence commands attention. These individuals, be they traditional leaders, religious figures, or experienced statesmen, must be safeguarded from the corrosive and abrasive culture of insults. Having said that, it is equally important for these leaders to conduct themselves in ways that do not invite unnecessary criticism or anger from the public.

Clergy and traditional rulers must avoid acts that could be perceived as partisan, unjust or morally questionable. The Bible offers clear guidance on such matters: Proverbs 15:1 reminds us that “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Leaders, therefore, must act with integrity, humility and wisdom to ensure that their actions do not inadvertently provoke disrespect.

The media also plays a significant role in this discourse. In recent times, some journalists have resorted to insults in their commentaries and interviews. Whilst they may claim to be engaging in criticism, the language they use often crosses the line into personal attacks and vitriolic abuses. Such conduct is not only unprofessional but also damaging to the values of responsible and professional journalism.

Children and young people often learn from what they see and hear, and when the media normalises insults, it indirectly teaches the next generation that verbal abuse is acceptable in public discourse. Globally renowned journalists, whether from the BBC, CNN or Al Jazeera, are known for their ability to challenge authority and hold leaders accountable without resorting to derogatory language. Ghanaian journalists can uphold the same standards by maintaining professionalism, accuracy and decorum.

Politicians also bear responsibility in this matter. Some political figures are known to sponsor individuals or groups to engage in insults against opponents, thinking it will earn them a political advantage. This practice is dangerous for democracy and detrimental to national unity. Insults may deliver short-term political excitement, but they inflict long-term damage on the political culture of the country. Politicians who truly love Ghana must rise above the temptation of verbal attacks and instead promote respectful, fact-based debates.

Ghana’s path to development requires unity, respect and constructive dialogue. Insults will not build roads, improve schools or strengthen the economy. They will only deepen partisan divisions, create mistrust and cause distractions to nation-building.

It is time for all Ghanaians, leaders, journalists, politicians and ordinary citizens to embrace a new culture of respect in political discourse. A nation is not built by tearing down its people through words, but by lifting each other, even in disagreement. The call is clear: Ghana must reject the politics of insult and build its future on the solid foundation of respect, dialogue and mutual understanding.

The National Project Management Conference calls for reforms to boost Ghana's development The National Project Management Conference calls for reforms to boost Ghana’s development

The National Project Management Conference has issued a sweeping 10-point communiqué aimed at transforming project delivery in Ghana.

The event, held on July 25, 2025, at the Aqua Safari Resort in Big Ada, brought together policymakers, professionals, academics, development partners, and civil society to address persistent challenges in public project execution.

Key among the resolutions was a call for the passage of a Project Management Act to provide legal backing for project continuity, ensuring that no viable national project is abandoned without an independent technical audit.

Delegates also proposed the creation of a National Project Delivery & Accountability Authority (NPDAA) to oversee all public projects, maintain a national register, and improve transparency.

The communiqué urged that all public projects be led by certified project managers and supported by a National Project Completion Fund to enforce a “Finish-to-Start” policy, completing stalled projects before launching new ones.

The adoption of the Ghana Integrated Project Management Framework (GIPMF) as a national standard was also endorsed, alongside mandatory Earned Value Management (EVM) systems and public dashboards to enhance accountability.

To end the politicisation of infrastructure, the conference called for safeguarding projects beyond electoral cycles and integrating the GIPMF into the operations of all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies in alignment with the Public Financial Management Act.

Gender inclusion featured prominently, with a recommendation that at least 30% of leadership roles in public projects be held by certified women under the Women in Project Management Framework.

In a notable environmental resolution, the conference urged government to classify illegal mining (galamsey) as a national development risk and make combating it a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for District Chief Executives and Police Commanders.

EasyJet pilot suspended after ‘drunk and naked’ incident

EasyJet grounded a pilot after he was spotted drunk and naked at a hotel EasyJet grounded a pilot after he was spotted drunk and naked at a hotel

EasyJet has suspended one of its captains after he was reportedly seen roaming a luxury hotel drunk and naked.

The unnamed pilot was witnessed walking through common areas of a five-star resort in Cape Verde without any clothes on in the early hours of the morning on 5 August, after an extended drinking session in a bar, according to the Sun.

He was due to operate a return flight to Gatwick more than 36 hours later, but was grounded after the budget airline received complaints about the incident and a replacement pilot found.

An EasyJet spokesman told the BBC the pilot now faces an investigation and that the safety of passengers and crew was its “highest priority”.

The captain arrived at the Melia Dunas Beach Resort and Spa in the West African island nation on 4 August and proceeded to begin drinking, the Sun reports.

At around 02:30 local time (04:30 BST) the following morning, hotel guests reportedly saw him strip off and wander into the reception, before moving on to the gym and spa, according to the newspaper.

“The pilot did not have a stitch on and reeked of alcohol,” an anonymous source inside the airline was quoted by the paper as saying.

“Anyone who saw the pilot cavorting naked in the early hours on the day before a flight would not dream of getting on a plane with him at the controls.”

He was scheduled to helm the 2,332-nautical-mile (4,318km) trip back to Gatwick on the afternoon of 6 August, but was removed from the flight.

An EasyJet spokesman said: “As soon as we were made aware, the pilot was immediately stood down from duty, in line with our procedures, pending an investigation.

“The safety of our passengers and crew is EasyJet’s highest priority.”

The airline’s code of business ethics states that staff must behave “with integrity when dealing with our people, our customers, our partners and the communities within which we operate”.

Asantehene announces passing of Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III

0

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has formally announced the passing of the Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, at the Manhyia Palace.

The announcement was made during a mandatory Asanteman Council meeting, attended by all paramountcies and clans. The one-week observance for the late Queen Mother will be held on Thursday, August 21, 2025.

Nana Konadu Yiadom III died on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at the age of 98.

She was officially outdoored as Asantehemaa in 2017, following the death of her predecessor, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, in 2016. Her public unveiling took place during the 67th birthday celebration of her brother, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace.

That event also marked the commissioning of a renovated ceremonial park named in honour of the late Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II. Located opposite the Manhyia Museum, the park features a well-maintained artificial turf and has since hosted numerous royal and traditional ceremonies.

Nana Konadu Yiadom III was widely revered for her influential role in the Asante Kingdom and her steadfast commitment to preserving its rich cultural heritage.

Throughout her reign, she served as a pillar of support to the Asantehene and the broader traditional authority.

Make parliamentary records public and youth-friendly

Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings is the MP for Korle Klottey Constituency Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings is the MP for Korle Klottey Constituency

The Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey Constituency, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has underscored the importance of accurate parliamentary records in safeguarding reputations and preserving history, urging Hansard departments across the Commonwealth to embrace digital platforms for wider accessibility.

Speaking at the 11th Biennial Conference of the Commonwealth Hansard Editors Association at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Monday, August 11, 2025, Dr Agyeman-Rawlings stressed that in an era where information spreads rapidly, reputations built over a lifetime can be destroyed within seconds through misquoting and misrepresentation.

“With the speed at which information is disseminated, a whole reputation built over a lifetime can be destroyed in seconds. If you don’t have the information at your fingertips to counter that, you’ve lost the media war,” she said.

She commended the meticulous work of Hansard departments in documenting parliamentary proceedings, noting that such records serve as academic archives and authoritative references for future generations.

She likened their importance to evidence in court, which requires proof beyond hearsay or eyewitness accounts.

Dr Agyeman-Rawlings also called on the Hansard department to take advantage of social media to promote its work, making records widely and freely available to the public.

She argued that easier online access to parliamentary debates across the Commonwealth would help break down closed-off archives and engage younger audiences, who may not spend time in physical libraries.

“The best way of keeping information safe is by making it widely and freely available. We must make these records interesting, break them into accessible bits, and ensure they are not so overwhelming in volume that people cannot make use of the information,” she emphasized.

She further encouraged peer-to-peer exchanges among participants at the conference, highlighting the value of sharing lessons and best practices to strengthen legislative institutions globally.

Ghana Fund Rides Stock Surge to 20% Gain

0

Republic Equity Trust
Republic Equity Trust

Republic Equity Trust delivered standout results in 2024, posting a near 20 percent return fueled by Ghana’s resurgent stock market.

This robust performance marks a sharp turnaround from its modest 4.38 percent gain the previous year.

The fund’s net asset value climbed to GH¢16.49 million, an 18.8 percent increase. Driving this growth was a strategic shift into equities, which grew to 53.79 percent of the portfolio by year-end, up significantly from 41.80 percent in 2023.

Management capitalized on improving market sentiment and lackluster fixed-income returns. “Investor confidence in equities strengthened, and we positioned the fund to capture that momentum,” explained Madeline Nettey, CEO of Republic Equity Trust.

Ghana’s stock exchange enjoyed its best year since 2013, with the GSE Composite Index soaring 56.17 percent. Strong earnings from financial and consumer stocks, alongside capital moving away from government debt, propelled the rally.

Republic Equity Trust benefited from holdings in top performers like Unilever Ghana, which surged 140 percent, Ecobank Transnational (up over 106 percent), and MTN Ghana (nearly 79 percent). GCB Bank and ABSA NewGold ETF also delivered impressive gains of 87.4 percent and 78.7 percent respectively.

Despite soaring prices, trading volumes actually declined throughout the year. This suggests lingering investor caution amid ongoing macroeconomic risks. “Lower volumes indicate not all investors fully participated, even as prices recovered,” Nettey noted.

“But for long-term holders, the value opportunities were undeniable.” The fund maintained diversified holdings in government bonds (28.28 percent), fixed deposits (17.04 percent), and other instruments to manage risk.

Macroeconomic conditions presented a mixed picture. Inflation edged up to 23.8 percent, while the cedi faced significant depreciation pressure. Treasury bill yields fell across maturities, and the central bank cut its policy rate to 27 percent by December. These factors collectively made equities a more compelling option for investors seeking returns above inflation.

Looking ahead, Republic Equity Trust anticipates further gains in 2025. “With interest rates likely declining further and select equities poised for new highs, the outlook remains favorable,” Nettey stated. The fund will continue pursuing long-term capital appreciation through dividend-paying stocks and high-growth sectors, expressing confidence that consistent investor contributions will benefit from the projected equity upswing.

Refugees in Kenya impacted by food aid cuts; WFP rolls out new system

0

Newly arrived Somali refugees wait at the profiling and registration centre in Dadaab refugee camp Newly arrived Somali refugees wait at the profiling and registration centre in Dadaab refugee camp

The World Food Programme (WFP) has said it will need to drastically cut rations to refugees in Kenya due to reductions in global aid, including major funding cuts from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Residents of the Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps were beginning to feel the impact of food aid cuts on Monday as the WFP implemented a new assistance system there in which certain groups are prioritised over others.

The WFP said aid is being cut by 60 percent for the most vulnerable groups, including pregnant women and disabled people, and by 80 percent for refugees with some kind of income.

The two camps host nearly 800,000 people fleeing conflict and drought in Somalia and South Sudan, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

WFP’s operations supporting refugees in Kenya are under immense strain,” Baimankay Sankoh, WFP’s deputy country director in Kenya, said in May. “With available resources stretched to their limits, we have had to make the difficult decision to again reduce food assistance. This will have a serious impact on vulnerable refugees, increasing the risk of hunger and malnutrition.”

“There has been a lot of tension in the last couple of weeks or so,” Al Jazeera’s Catherine Soi said, reporting from Kakuma.

“People were very angry about what WFP is calling the priority food distribution, where some people will not get food at all and others are going to get a small fraction of the food.”

These tensions boiled over, triggering protests last week, which left one person dead and several others injured, said Soi, adding that WFP officials she spoke with said the aid cuts from organisations like USAID meant they have had to make “very difficult decisions about who gets to eat and who doesn’t”.

WFP worker Thomas Chica explained to Soi that the new system was rolled out after assessments were conducted by WFP and its partners.

Refugees are now assessed based on their needs, rather than their status, said Chica. “We need to look at them separately and differently and see how best we can channel the system so that it provides.”

The impact of these cuts is severe amid concerns over malnutrition. The Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) rate among refugee children and pregnant or breastfeeding women in Kenya is above 13 percent. A GAM rate over 10 percent is classed as a nutrition emergency.

“Already the food that is being issued is quite low, 40 percent of the recommended ration, and this is being shared by a bigger chunk of the population,” Chica said, adding that stocks will therefore not last as long as hoped.

This reduction took effect in February and is based on a daily recommended intake of 2,100kcal.

With its current resources dating from last year, WFP will only be able to provide assistance until December or January, said Chica.

WFP said in May that $44m was required to provide full rations and restore cash assistance for all refugees just through August.

Avoid Hasty Sharing Of Chopper Accident Content – Dumelo Pleads

0

John Dumelo

Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon and Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, has appealed to the public to refrain from hasty dissemination of sensitive content on social media, following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed eight lives on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, as such posts would cause more grief to the bereaved families.

Speaking in an interview at the flower-laying ceremony, held at the Jubilee House on Thursday, August 7, 2025, Mr. Dumelo described the accident as devastating and heartbreaking, stressing that the rush to be the first to break news should not come at the expense of compassion for the bereaved families.

He condemned the act of rushing to disseminate any information about the accident, especially if it is sensitive, saying, “Everybody is always in a hurry to be the first to share it,” and added, “There are some things you can share, but not scenes like this. Imagine what the family went through when they saw it on social media—it can be very heartbreaking.” He described it as unnecessary and potentially harmful, and advised the public to be empathetic on their reportage.

According to Mr. Dumelo, the tragedy, which occurred during a routine mission, has shaken the nation. The eight men who perished were in the line of duty, a loss he described as one that could have happened to anyone, as no one was immune to such tragic event. He stressed that the accident was not limited to a certain group or circumstance, given that President John Mahama and other officials sometimes use the same aircraft and systems.

Mr. Dumelo urged that investigations into the cause of the helicopter crash be carried out thoroughly, to find the root cause of the accident. He reiterated that once investigations reveal the cause of the accident, individuals found to have contributed to the disaster should be held accountable. “When the investigation starts and the report comes out, those responsible should definitely be brought to book,” he stated.

He encouraged the public to wait for official findings to arrive at conclusions and not disseminate unverified information.

He also applauded the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for extending their condolences in this challenging period.

NPP withdraws from Tamale Central by-election

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will not field a candidate in the upcoming Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election, following the tragic death of the area’s Member of Parliament, Alhaji Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed, in the August 6 helicopter crash.

Dr. Murtala Mohammed was among eight individuals who lost their lives when a military Helicopter they were travelling in crashed in Adansi Akrofoum in the Ashanti Region.

His passing has created a vacancy in the Tamale Central seat, prompting preparations for a by-election in accordance with Article 112(5) of Ghana’s Constitution.

In a statement signed by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party said the decision was taken during a National Steering Committee meeting held on Monday, August 11, 2025, at its national headquarters.

The resolution, made in line with Article 10(10)(1) of the NPP Constitution, was influenced by what the party described as the “circumstances under which the Tamale Central seat has become vacant” and the need to avoid deepening political divisions at a time of national mourning.

“The NPP is of the belief that it would be inhumane and unconscionable to subject the nation to a competitive process in search of a replacement for the departed MP,” the statement read.

“The tension and acrimony often associated with the conduct of by-elections in the country should be avoided.”

The party noted that the most fitting way to honour Dr. Murtala Mohammed and the other crash victims was not only to intensify the fight against illegal mining (galamsey) but also to ensure a peaceful and uncontentious process to replace the late MP.

“When the Electoral Commission of Ghana opens nominations for the Tamale Central by-election, the NPP will, in accord with the national interest, not take part in the contest,” the statement concluded.

Political observers say the NPP’s decision is a rare gesture in Ghana’s competitive political climate, potentially setting the stage for a consensus candidate or an uncontested by-election in the constituency.

‘Lumbalove’, Awesome Global Tributes To Ghana’s Undisputed Highlife Superstar

0

Daddy Lumba

Surely, the seemingly universal candlelight vigil held in honour of ‘Burger Highlife’ superstar Daddy Lumba on August 2, 2025, must qualify for a Guinness Book of Records entry as the most extensive, simultaneous mourning vigil for one person!

It could also count as another Ghana first, ours being a country known for pacesetting. And that was not even the funeral itself for the man with the undisputed, fitting title, ‘highlife legend’!

Charles Kwadwo Fosu, better known by his stage name, ‘Daddy Lumba’, was born at Nsuta, in the Ashanti Region on September 29, 1964.

Reportedly his stage name is a carryover from his student days at the Juaben Senior High School. The devastating news of his death at The Bank Hospital, in Accra, on Saturday, July 26,% 2025, came early that day.

The extent of love demonstrated for him across the world by highlife lovers and other admirers can perhaps best be described by the term ‘Lumbalove’, or even ‘Lumbamania’, reminiscent of the term ‘Beatlemania’ that described the popularity of the British pop and rock band sensation of the 1960s, The Beatles.

However, where Beatlemania was mainly identified with hysterical, screaming teenage girls, Lumba music devotees span both genders, age groups and borders.

A memorable quip expressed by someone in a video clip was that there is no one venue big enough to host a Lumba funeral, so each community should be allowed to hold its Lumba funeral. Indeed, some humourists have termed it ‘one district, one funeral’ – clearly mimicking the ‘One District One Factory’ initiative of the past New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

Live streamed, the Independence Square national vigil, was announced in a media release on July 27 by the family lawyers, Baba Jamal and Associates, as being organised “under the auspices of the Creative Arts Agency”. It gave the assurance that funeral arrangement details would be communicated in due course.

President John Mahama was among the first to express deep sorrow at the news. In a July 27 Facebook post, he described Lumba “as a musical genius whose timeless compositions served as the soundtrack to many Ghanaian lives. … On behalf of the Government of Ghana, I extend heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones for their irreplaceable loss.”

On July 28, the news of the day was that even in Parliament, Lumba’s death had an unprecedented impact on the proceedings. Not only were the MPs eulogizing the musician by statements, their words were backdropped by Lumba hits! That must be a first, the Honourables singing highlife classics in the Chamber!

Furthermore, this week information has come from Manhyia Palace, Kumasi, about the funeral.

According to Lumba’s family head, named as Opanin Kofi Owusu Boahen, “Daddy Lumba is the grandson of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu Il” and “Otumfuo has given the family the green light to prepare for the one-week observance and grand funeral of the late musician, to honour his memory” (Daily Guide, August 5, 2025).

On August 30, the traditional ‘One Week’ remembrance is scheduled to take place in Accra, the family has announced.

Remarkably, last year, a Lumba song, ‘Mpempen do me (thousands love me), was listed among the favourite songs of Britain’s King Charles!

Who knows, perhaps among other things, the King felt a bond with Lumba through their shared name, Charles!

No wonder Deputy British High Commissioner to Ghana, Mr. Keith McMahon, was among the dignitaries who called at the Lumba residence to pay their respects to the family. “King Charles is a big fan of Daddy Lumba,” he said in an interview there.

Places which also hosted vigils on August 2, included Dubai, New York and London. In Germany, fellow music giant Stonebuoy poignantly paused his performance at a venueto honour the memory of Lumba” while mobile phone lights replaced candles. Similarly, in Philadelphia, USA, a concert by rappers paused to celebrate Lumba.

Instagram reported on July 28 that during his ‘5Five Alive Tour’ stop in Toronto (Canada), Nigerian superstar Davido moved fans to tears as he paid tribute to highlife legend Lumba.

“Mid-performance, Davido surprised the crowd by singing one of Lumba’s classic hits, dedicating the emotional moment to the icon.”

And, doubtless, Lumba fans and friends in Germany, where he lived for years, too, showed their love.

Here in Ghana, apart from the Independence Square national one, vigils were reported from the ‘Kantamanto Traphouse’ said to be a group at the Kantamanto Market in Accra; Koforidua; the University of Science and Technology, Kumasi; and other places. Needless to say, the accompanying music of the vigil everywhere was Lumba evergreens, with the attendees enthusiastically, mournfully, singing along and dancing.

To me there is good reason why Ghanaian filmmakers should be rushing to secure the rights to produce a movie about the life of musician extraordinaire, Daddy Lumba. From his back-to-back highlife hits, 30 albums and more than 200 songs, Lumba’s story is rich material for a film, as well as a book or two.

As indicated, since the announcement of his death, his home in the Accra suburb of East Legon, has welcomed a continuing stream of mourners, from VIPs to grassroots fans, calling to pay their respects to the bereaved family, as well as sign the Book of Condolence.

Political heavyweights, notably from the NPP, who have visited the family’s home, include former President Nana Akufo-Addo, former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former President John Kufuor; and some from other political parties.

How many bereaved families could be thus honoured, and by so many demonstrating solidarity?

An astounding revelation was that it appears that a stalwart of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Baba Jamal, is the lead lawyer for the Lumba family! It’s known that the now in opposition NPP claims Lumba as their own, following his compelling campaign song for the then candidate Akufo-Addo, ‘Nana is a winner’ (released in 2008 and featuring in the 2012 and 2016 campaigns), which Akufo-Addo credits as having been instrumental in his election victory.

A Wikipedia entry notes:

“During the development of Germany-based Burger Highlife in the late 1980s, Lumba began his musical career as part of the Lumba Brothers duo with fellow Ghanaian artist Nana Acheampong. Both were migrants living in Germany at the time. (In 1989) they released their sole studio album, Yee Ye Aka Akwantuom (meaning, ‘we’re nearly in a rut, here in a foreign land, bogged down by difficulties blocking our fortune seeking) (and) the title track became a hit back home in Ghana and is considered one of the most celebrated songs in highlife music.

Shortly after the duo disbanded in the early 1990s, Lumba embarked on a solo career.”

No voice, no response: Ghana’s deaf community left behind in policy

0

Ghana has made measurable gains: special schools exist, and advocates have worked for decades to expand access. But the system is small relative to the need.

Special schools for the deaf are limited in number, and many of them stop short of equipping students with market-ready vocational skills.

Ghana’s deaf community faces broken promises, poverty, forced marriages, and sexual abuse — with little government action. This editorial exposes the silence, injustice, and urgent need for reform.

This article, written by Samuel Kwame Boadu, was first published on accrastreetjournal.com as “Muted Promises: How Ghana Fails Its Deaf Citizens.”

Every few years, the Government of Ghana makes new promises to the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. We hear them at conferences, on campaign stages, in polished speeches about “inclusion” and “equal opportunity.”

We see photos of officials smiling next to deaf students or interpreters. But after the speeches fade, life for most deaf Ghanaians remains painfully the same — or worse.

For thousands in this community, the word “inclusion” is just political decoration. There is no real plan, no real investment, and no real urgency to fix the structural barriers that keep deaf people trapped in poverty, abuse, and social exclusion.

Schooling that leads nowhere

Yes, Ghana has schools for the deaf. But what happens after graduation? For many, it’s a cliff edge. The education they get is often not enough to land a job in today’s economy. Vocational training is scarce, and there’s no nationwide plan to link deaf graduates with employers.

The result is predictable: many end up begging in traffic, holding envelopes in bus stations, or relying on family members who are themselves struggling. Those who don’t want to beg often face an even harsher reality — survival through forced marriages, prostitution, or drugs.

Forced marriages and broken dreams

Within the deaf community, early marriage is common — not because of tradition, but because of desperation. Society often shuns the idea of a “physically challenged” son or daughter-in-law. So deaf men and women marry each other, hoping to pool resources and survive together.

But marriage in poverty is still poverty. Many of these couples struggle to raise children without skills, without a steady income, and without any government support. It is not the “family stability” politicians boast about. It’s survival mode.

The hidden crisis of sexual abuse

Perhaps the most underreported tragedy is the sexual abuse of deaf women and girls. Predators know that deaf victims often have no way to report crimes effectively. Police stations rarely have sign language interpreters. Hospitals aren’t equipped to take statements in sign language. Even in courtrooms, interpreters are scarce.

The result? Abusers walk free. Survivors remain silent — or worse, are pressured into silence. And the cycle of violence continues.

This is not just a “deaf issue.” It’s a human rights crisis.

Drugs and desperation

In some cases, hopelessness pushes young deaf men into drugs — either as users to escape reality, or as petty dealers to make ends meet. When caught, they face the full weight of the law, without the same chance to defend themselves as hearing citizens.

Again, the system is not built for them. It is built to forget them.

Empty promises vs. real action

The government points to “achievements” like publishing a Ghanaian Sign Language dictionary. But let’s be clear: a dictionary does not replace laws, interpreters, and real access.

In Europe, countries like Finland, Sweden, and the UK have made sign language an official language, trained thousands of interpreters, provided full-time accessibility officers in hospitals, and funded deaf entrepreneurs.

Ghana could do the same — if it wanted to.

What needs to happen now

Enough photo-ops. Enough symbolic gestures. Ghana must:

  • Legally recognize Ghanaian Sign Language and make it a right in all public services.
  • Fund interpreter programs for police stations, hospitals, and courts.
  • Transform deaf schools into hubs for real vocational training in tech, craft, and entrepreneurship.
  • Give targeted grants and loans to deaf-owned businesses.
  • Create safe reporting channels for deaf survivors of abuse.

This isn’t charity — it’s justice. It’s also smart economics. When deaf Ghanaians have skills and opportunities, they earn, spend, and pay taxes. They contribute to society instead of being forced into dependency.

A national shame

Right now, Ghana’s deaf community lives in the shadow of empty promises. They are educated but unemployed, married but impoverished, abused but unheard.

Every day the government delays action, it chooses to keep these citizens on the margins. It chooses silence over justice. And it tells a whole community — without saying a word — that their lives matter less.

Ghana must break that silence. Not with more promises, but with action that can be seen, felt, and measured.

Because until that happens, the deaf will continue to hear the same message they’ve been hearing for decades: nothing.

Crowd disorder at CHAN raises concerns in Kenya

Overcrowding at the Kasarani Stadium was evident during the Group A game between Kenya and Morocco Overcrowding at the Kasarani Stadium was evident during the Group A game between Kenya and Morocco

Ticket sales for some African Nations Championship (CHAN) matches in Nairobi have been suspended after chaotic scenes overshadowed Kenya’s victory over Morocco on Sunday.

The Harambee Stars produced a shock by beating the pre-tournament favourites 1-0 at a packed Kasarani Stadium, yet the result was marred by disorder both inside and outside the venue before and during the match.

The security breaches included a broken gate, fans entering without tickets, overcrowding beyond the 48,063 capacity and the invasion of areas reserved for media.

Some fans who were trying to access the stadium from a lower gate have accused the police of using tear gas.

Mookh Africa, CHAN’s ticketing service provider in Kenya, confirmed to BBC Sport Africa that sales for upcoming fixtures at the stadium, officially known as the Moi International Sports Centre, have been halted until organisers issue further instructions.

The disciplinary and safety committees of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) have launched investigations but a spokesperson for the continental game’s governing body denied that it had taken the decision to suspend sales.

“Caf is concerned about the security situation witnessed at Kenya games,” the spokesperson said.

“Caf is engaging with the local organising committee and the (Kenyan) government to address security issues.”

BBC Sport Africa has contacted the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and the CHAN local organising committee for comment but is yet to receive a response.

The incident came only days after FKF was fined $20,000 by Caf,, external with $2,500 of that sum suspended, for earlier crowd control and security failures at the tournament.

Kenya is co-hosting CHAN, African football’s biennial international competition for home-based players, alongside Tanzania and Uganda – and stadium security issues in Nairobi were highlighted before the delayed tournament kicked off.

The East African trio are also set to jointly stage the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The problems at the Kasarani on Sunday stemmed from ticketing issues and the eagerness of Kenyan supporters to see their side take on Morocco on home soil.

BBC Sport Africa saw hundreds of supporters left stranded outside the stadium despite holding what appeared to be valid tickets.

Several said they had unknowingly bought duplicated tickets from individuals who purchased in bulk and resold them to multiple fans.

Concerns are growing over the unregulated resale market operating around Kasarani on match days, with witnesses accusing rogue vendors of profiteering just metres from the gates.

Less than 30 minutes before kick-off the stadium was still half empty but, as frustration mounted, some supporters began jumping over the perimeter fence to gain illegal entry.

Despite a strong security presence, several breaches occurred from one end of the venue, sparking a near stampede.

The ground then appeared to be over capacity as Kenya fans crammed in to watch Ryan Ogam score the decisive goal for Benni McCarthy’s side, and several Harambee Stars fans entered the press box in order to secure a vantage point, with members of the Moroccan media concerned for their safety.

The Kasarani is set to host three more matches at the tournament, including Kenya’s group game against Zambia on Sunday and one of the quarter-final ties.

Fans have raised concerns about the ticketing process at the finals, with many claiming some CHAN matches were marked as sold out before the advertised sales time.

Supporters are urging authorities to address issues with the online ticketing system and crack down on fraudsters.

Modest Fashion in 2025: Style with Substance

0

In an age where personal identity is increasingly expressed through clothing, modest fashion has emerged not just as a trend—but as a movement. Once considered overly conservative or even outdated, modest clothing for women is now being embraced as a powerful expression of individuality, cultural identity, and self-respect. In 2025, modest fashion continues to evolve, offering elegant, contemporary options for women who value both coverage and creativity.

The Rise of Modest Fashion

The popularity of modest fashion has grown significantly in recent years, fueled by diverse cultural influences and a growing demand for inclusive fashion. For many women, dressing modestly is not about restriction—it’s about empowerment. Whether inspired by faith, comfort, or personal values, modest clothing allows women to stay true to themselves without compromising on style.

As fashion influencer Leila Abadi puts it, “Modesty isn’t about hiding yourself—it’s about choosing how you want to be seen.”

This sentiment resonates with women across the globe who are blending traditional modesty with modern aesthetics.

What Defines Modest Fashion?

While interpretations of modest fashion can vary, the core concept centers around clothing that offers more coverage—typically featuring longer sleeves, higher necklines, and looser fits. But this doesn’t mean sacrificing style.

Designers today are creating silhouettes that are not only modest but also fashion-forward. Think fluid maxi dresses with detailed embroidery, high-waisted wide-leg trousers, elegant tunics, and ankle-grazing skirts in luxurious fabrics. Earth tones, jewel colors, and pastel hues dominate the modest fashion palette in 2025, reflecting a shift toward natural elegance.

Key Pieces in a Modest Wardrobe

1. The Modest Dress: A-line and maxi dresses remain staples, often crafted from breathable, flowy fabrics like chiffon or cotton blends. Intricate detailing—such as lace trims, subtle prints, or structured pleats—adds flair without compromising coverage.

2. Tunics and Oversized Tops: Perfect for layering, these versatile pieces can be styled with trousers, denim, or skirts. They offer room to move while maintaining a refined silhouette.

3. Palazzo Pants and Wide-Leg Trousers: These bottoms provide full coverage while exuding effortless chic. Whether tailored for the office or relaxed for weekend wear, they offer style without sacrificing comfort.

4. Layering Essentials: Long-line blazers, duster coats, and cardigans play a huge role in modest fashion. Layering not only enhances modesty but also allows for playful experimentation with textures and proportions.

5. Modest Swimwear: With innovations in fabric and design, modest swimwear now includes UV-protective fabrics and stylish silhouettes, giving women more choices to enjoy beach days while respecting their preferences.

Accessories and Personal Touches

Accessories complete the look. Hijabs, headscarves, and shawls come in an endless variety of prints and fabrics, letting women express cultural heritage or personal style. Statement belts, bold jewelry, and structured handbags add polish, turning modest outfits into fashion statements.

Importantly, the modest fashion scene in 2025 celebrates diversity. From Muslim fashion bloggers to secular influencers, modest fashion has become a shared language spoken across cultures.

Why Modest Fashion Matters

The modern modest fashion movement challenges outdated assumptions about what it means to dress modestly. It’s not about rules—it’s about choices. Women are no longer limited to plain or generic clothing when seeking modest options. Instead, they have access to high-quality, fashionable garments that reflect both who they are and what they stand for.

Beyond aesthetics, modest fashion also encourages slower, more conscious shopping habits. Many modest fashion brands are embracing sustainability, offering ethically made garments that align with the values of their customers.

Final Thoughts

Modest clothing is no longer a niche. It’s a global force in fashion, redefining what it means to be stylish and self-aware. Whether driven by faith, identity, or simply a desire for comfort, women choosing modest fashion today are doing so with pride, creativity, and confidence.

Unmonitored Social Media use driving teenage pregnancies – C/R Education Director

0

Central Region Education Director, Dr. Juliet Dufie Otame, has warned that unmonitored social media use among students is contributing to rising cases of teenage pregnancy in the region.

Her comments follow a Citi News report indicating that more than 30 teenage pregnancies were recorded in Gomoa Ehyiam alone over the past year. Health officials say the trend reflects a broader problem in the Gomoa West District, with new cases reported every month.

“Every month, a case of teenage pregnancy is recorded. Within 2024, we recorded between 20 and 30 cases,” said Bernice Amoah, a senior midwife at Gomoa Ehyiam.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily, Dr. Otame noted that the increase is particularly prevalent among Senior High School students. She urged parents to restrict students’ access to mobile phones, stressing that many use them to engage in harmful online activities.

While highlighting social media misuse as a major factor, she also expressed concern about cases in which some teachers exploit female students.

“Some of the teachers take advantage of the girls. You know these girls; most of them are vulnerable and ignorant, so they lure them. Sometimes too it is also the issue of social media. Most of the students have phones.

“We have preached this to parents who don’t give phones to the students. Let them come. Phones are not to be used in schools. You know, these are our kids; they are always there for the wrong reasons. Some of the teachers lure them into them and then put them into such a relationship,” she stated.

Dr. Otame cautioned that teachers found engaging in such conduct would face strict disciplinary action.

Petition to President on CJ removal

0

Sir, the three arms of government —the Executive, the Legislature, and the Judiciary —are the vehicles that convey the main ideas of government.

The three key figures, the President, the Speaker of Parliament and the Chief Justice (CJ), are the leading figures in governance.

The removal of the Chief Justice is an information that pierces through the hearts of many Ghanaians with uneasiness.

A sediment of uncertainty has settled on the hearts of many Ghanaians.

This process stems from the requirements of the Constitution.

Observations

a) The removal of the CJ is strange to many Ghanaians. Many Ghanaians are not aware of this possibility as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.

b) There are two groups of people, those who want the President to move with the quickest alacrity to initiate the process of the removal of the CJ, and those who think the President should temper mercy with justice.

c) It is a commendable humane deed of the President for giving copies of the petition to the CJ, and giving her time to assemble her facts to defend the allegations.

He has respected the principles embedded in Human Rights.

The President was reasonably flexible on Article 146 (6).

The President, who is the head of the executive, derives his mandate from the people.

The President contests and wins an election.

The Speaker of Parliament, or the Chairman of Parliament, as some may term it, is elected by Members of Parliament.

The third arm of government, the CJ, is appointed by the President or the Executive arm of government, so his or her lifespan can depend on the executive.

It is expected that the separation of powers works effectively where each of the organs becomes independent.

For effective governance, that should be the practice.

In my opinion, the CJ should be elected by the judiciary. Interested candidates should apply for the position.

They must go out and campaign with their manifestos.

Eligible voters should be judges and magistrates from the various courts in any given country.

If that becomes the practice, then the CJ will derive his or her mandate from the judiciary.

An electoral college will be constituted, where all judges will be eligible to vote.

There must be a judicial committee that monitors the day-to-day running of the Judiciary.

Should there be the need to impeach or remove the CJ, the Judicial Committee will call the CJ and inform him/her that his/her performance or attitude may not permit them to continue their duties.

Both the Judicial Committee and the Judicial Council will have to bring to the chief justice’s attention issues that could lead to His/her removal.

He/she must be given the prompting on his/her lapses and shortcomings in their administration.

Where there is persistent insubordination and disregard for laws and constituted authority, a vote of no confidence will be passed by the majority of electorates who voted him or her into power.

The International Court of Justice should endeavour to adopt this proposal as an international agenda to promote fairness in the separation of powers.

The United Nations Department of Political Affairs should also pour itself into the implementation of this proposal, which I think is laudable.

This will strengthen democratic processes in governance and promote fairness.

Checks, balances

The actual checks and balances will be amplified where we see that all three arms of government are fully independent from each other to a larger extent.

“Nobody has a monopoly over the truth, nobody can force their model on the other, let’s learn from each other’s experience”—Mikhail Gorbachev, former President of the former Soviet Union. (Ne kto ne imeet monopolia na istinu).

We should be open to cooperation and discussions on issues relating to the law, while exploring new ideas and avenues to consolidate our democracy here in Ghana and abroad.

The other way round will be the Judicial Committee, made up of representatives of all the courts from the District Court to the Supreme Court.

The Judicial Committee can vote on the continuity of the CJ or the termination of his or her appointment.
